Issue 36 2022 Term 4 Week 7 - 24 Nov 2022

From the Principal

This week all of our Yr 8 students were involved in a STEAM challenge in which they had to address the challenge of improving the current environmental impact on the world’s oceans. The four team finalists from each House presented to the judging panel and the Year Group. The topics included addressing the large number of bioplastics in the oceans, filtering waste from stormwater with a unique system, saving turtles from being caught in nets using speakers and utilising technology to support the growth of coral nurseries, which was the overall 1st placed presentation from Roseby White. My thanks to Secondary School eLearning Coordinator, Wendy Duckworth, our STEAM team and Yr 8 Tutors for their work in encouraging the students to think creatively and laterally when addressing key issues.

Other highlights included the Yr 8 and Yr 10 Science Symposiums, where students presented their Science Research projects to their peers and staff judging panels. It was most enjoyable to have the opportunity to speak to various groups of students regarding their scientific method, the challenges they encountered and the evaluation of their research.

The Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy celebrated the achievements of our students through three exceptional performances at The Concourse last week, from our youngest Preparatory School performers through to the Seniors. I attended on Friday evening and was ‘blown away’ by the quality of the dancing from our students. The applause and comments from the audience reinforced how exceptional the level was and some disbelief that this could be achieved by a school-based program. It was worth waiting three years for and will always remain a highlight of my time at Redlands.

My sincere thanks to Gilly Revie (Director and Head of the Ballet and Dance Academy) for her leadership, creative vision and passion for the program and also a special acknowledgement to our Secondary School Dance teachers Katharine Boase (Subject Coordinator of Dance) and Ashleigh Moore for their creativity, dedication and commitment to our senior students, which was so evident in the quality of their curriculum-based performances.

The Yr 2 Disco also occurred last Friday and the footage sent through from Ainslie Breckenridge demonstrated how much fun the students had on the night. Evidently the parents also demonstrated some talented moves when they enjoyed dancing with the students at the pick-up.

Thank you to the many students and families who have generously donated gifts for those in need this Christmas – for Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker on the Junior Campus and the Northern Rivers Children’s Services, supporting those families affected by the recent flooding in Lismore, on the Senior Campus. If families would still like to be involved, you can still make donations by Monday 28 November on the Senior Campus and Tuesday 6 December on the Junior Campus. You can read more details about these very worthy causes in the Secondary, Junior and Preparatory Sections of Note Day.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to attend the Redlanders Alumni Association Annual General Meeting last night where a number of new committee members joined this active and engaged leadership group. We greatly value the relationships we have with our Alumni and our aim is to support a lifelong connection to the School. Thank you to the Association for their collective work and support this year. My thanks in particular to outgoing Association President, Dr Jennifer Farrell, for her leadership, counsel and energy, which I know will be appreciated as she continues as a valued Committee member. To read more about the Redlanders Alumni Association along with the strategic work of our Foundation Office, please click here.

From Monday 5 December, we invite our Secondary School students to donate their used textbooks to the Second Hand Textbook sale. Students will also be able to submit order forms to buy current edition textbooks for 2023 at this time. A volunteer team of parents from the RPFA will be set up at the Gerard St entrance on the day to assist students with collection and ordering.

The Second Hand Textbook sale affirms Redlands standing commitment to sustainably managing our resources whilst engaging our students and the wider community in this endeavour. This sale not only reduces paper waste, it also keeps the cost of textbooks down for our families and provides charitable organisations with additional resources for distribution to communities that will continue to benefit from them. Click here for more information on the Second Hand Book Sale.

With the end of another School year approaching, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association continue to actively bring our various groups together. A number of social events still remain in the calendar and these can be found here.

I remain grateful for the guidance and support that our community so generously continue to provide. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlands Parents and Friends

Thank You

As my family and I stop to celebrate Thanksgiving today, I would like to take this opportunity to first thank all the wonderful teachers, tutors, advisors and support staff for their hard work and support for our students in another challenging year. I would also like to thank all those amazing parents and friends who have done an awesome job this year to keep our community connected.

We’d like to put together another incredible team of parents and friends to continue to build a strong and positive Redlands community for 2023. If you are interested in being a year parent for Secondary School, please signal your interest by clicking here. (All current parent reps are welcome to return, of course!) For Junior School and Prep School, we will be in contact with you at the beginning of next year once we know which classes each student is in.

Second Hand Textbooks – 5 December

On Mon 5 Dec, Secondary School students are invited to donate their used textbooks to the second hand textbook sale. Students looking to purchase books need to submit their forms in the morning as well. This initiative reduces the cost of textbooks for families, reduces waste and landfill by re-using books, and generates funds for Lifeline. Students currently in Year 6 -12 are encouraged to take part, please refer to the detailed FAQ’s on Pulse for more info.

We will need parent volunteers (around 10) to help us run the sale, please sign up if you can help in the morning or afternoon of Mon 5 Dec.

Secondary School

As we fast approach the end of term, we cherish the opportunities to gather as a community and the respite that the end of an academic year brings with it. On Tuesday, our final student-led assembly for the year took place in the Lang Gym for students in Yrs 10 and 12. As well as sharing their slogan for 2023 Fall Forward, we heard from staff and students on the topic of mental health. Open discussion is essential for us to develop efforts to improve mental health. Simone, our Service Captain, discussed Movember and raising awareness of men’s mental health (donations to the Redlands drive can be made here); our counsellor, Alessandro Digiacomo, shared tips and hints on how students can boost their mental wellbeing during the holiday period and where to seek help if needed. Our Counsellors have also created a parent holiday guide which provides advice on how you can support your child’s mental health and wellbeing throughout the holiday period.

HSC and IB Student-Led Conferences on Wednesday Night

Wednesday evening’s Yr 11 HSC and IB Student-Led Conferences presented an excellent opportunity for students, parents and teachers to discuss the academic progress made over recent weeks, and to reflect on the year as a whole. The evening also provided time to look forward to, and plan for 2023 and the students’ final year of Secondary School in terms of key learning objectives, assessments and personal goals and aspirations. If there is any feedback you would like to share regarding this event, please contact the relevant Deans; Lucy Benjamin (HSC) and Darren Taylor (IB).

Please Keep Giving!

Over the past week, the Christmas tree inside the Student Services Centre has slowly been surrounded by the generous gifts donated by the Redlands community. These gifts are going direct to the people of Lismore, who lost homes and businesses in the recent flooding and are in the early stages of a costly disaster recovery, and for whom this holiday season will be one of hardship.

In order to support the residents of Lismore, we are asking each student to donate a small Christmas gift to the Northern Rivers Children’s Services, who will use these gifts to bring joy to a number of families in the Lismore area this Christmas season.

Monday 28 November is the final day to bring in donations. Gifts for children of all ages are welcome – there is no need to wrap the present as this helps the Northern Rivers Children’s Service to identify appropriate gift recipients.

Yr 8 STEAM Challenge

Guest Speaker from the CSIRO, Ms Andrea Sosa Pintos, a chemical engineer, and Senior Program Manager – Indo-Pacific Plastics Innovation Network, commenced proceedings for the Yr 8 STEAM Challenge Days this week. Yr 8’s brief was to investigate and present a solution to help conserve and use our oceans in a sustainable way. During her initial presentation, Yr 8 student, Jerry Sun courageously engaged with Andrea on a number of issues and reflected the genuine interest of his cohort into the challenges humans face in terms of the oceans, such as how to end plastic waste. Some details below:

  • There are 400 million tonnes of plastic waste produced every year
  • Oceans will carry more plastic than fish (by weight) by 2050
  • Humans consume a credit card size amount of plastic each week

The winning team was Roseby White – Annabel, Mia, Hayden and Milo (Regrow Coral). They presented a solution to improve the ocean’s diversity and health by repopulating coral species through active reef restoration like coral nurseries and artificial reefs.

Mr Webber offered some insightful feedback to Yr 8 and the four finalists before offering his congratulations to the winning team, Roseby White.

Sophie Yu through to NSW State Championships Semi of the UN Voice Comp!

A huge congratulations are extended to Yr 9 student Sophie Yu who progressed to the NSW semi-final of the UN Voice competition. Her performance was outstanding, especially considering she only had a few days to prepare for it after the Yr 9 camp!

This is the first year Redlands students have engaged in this external public speaking competition and Sophie’s performance was awesome. Ms Kang feels especially proud of the Redlands team effort this year and was so impressed by the students’ progress, their commitment to the oratory journey and their achievements over such a short timeframe. A wonderful cocurricular opportunity for all.

Yr 7 – Unconditional Love

This term in Christian Studies Yr 7 students have been exploring Jesus’ commandment to love our neighbour and his example of Agape or unconditional love.  Students have investigated significant global issues, including poverty, to encourage and challenge them to reflect on how they support and understand those in need.

The ‘Love Your Neighbour’ incursion held last week was a simulation event designed by TEAR Australia to give students a practical experience of some of the daily challenges faced by a billion people on our planet affected by poverty. During the incursion, students built their own slum houses and participated in a series of challenges that simulated different aspects of poverty. The students who raised the most rupees were able to donate a goat, fresh water, and chicken to a family in poverty, through Tearfund Australia.

Below is Yr 7 student Sophia Preece’s reflection:

I found the incursion enjoyable, interesting and eye-opening. The incursion consisted of a series of challenges which were fun, frustrating  and pushed my thinking. However the challenges also made me realise more about those living in poverty.

The challenge opened my eyes to what inequality actually felt like rather than just to know the meaning and it allowed me to experience what it’s like to have to rely on the people around me and work together for survival.”

COVID-19 Update and Rapid Antigen Tests

With the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the wider community, we are closely monitoring COVID-19 positive cases here at Redlands. Pleasingly, as of yet, we have not seen a significant increase in cases in students or staff; however, we will continue to monitor and communicate any updates as necessary.

To help protect our community, we will be offering Rapid Antigen Tests to any families who would like to pick up additional tests. Parents or students can collect up to 2 boxes of Rapid Antigen Tests from their Section’s Reception. Rapid Antigen Tests will be available for collection from Friday morning and through all of next week.

Yr 10 Camp Reflections continued…

“Camp was… an experience to say the least. Coming to Redlands with no prior camping experience, I asked around for as much information as I could possibly get to prepare myself for what I thought was going to be an atrocious week. As it came around the corner, I got dropped off, walked to the undercroft super tired, carrying my heavy backpack filled with things to help me live as lavish of a life as I possibly could while in the woods. Surprisingly, before I even knew it, I was back on the bus heading to school. The whole week had gone by so quickly. Maybe it was because of how tired I was from the activities. Maybe it was because of how much fun it really ended up being. Either way, it was quite the opposite of an atrocious week. I remember having the most fun on the 4th day on which my group had to canoe across the entire lake from one campsite to the other – a hefty 24km trip in small wooden canoes carrying heavy backpacks and coolers filled with food, fighting against the wind and praying that the boat didn’t sink. It felt like it was straight out of a movie. Across the entire lake, my partner and I sang songs while watching the sunrise in front of us while drifting across the water feeling the cold morning wind crashing onto our faces and looking out onto the horizon, a vast body of water with the sun reflecting the water’s various shades of blue. It was completely surreal. It was most definitely a bizarre experience to truly remember and treasure for the rest of my life.”  – Apoorv Pilani

Yr 10 Geography Excursion  – Manly Snorkel

Three classes of Geography elective students engaged in an excursion to Manly Snorkel at Shelly Beach this week. Students took turns moving between three activities: snorkel and learning about the various sea-life in the area, completing a beach clean-up for building awareness and respect for the habitat and community and a walking track while testing their Geography knowledge by observing the waves, water level and coastline. They also enjoyed lunch while a member of council from Cabbage Tree Bay provided information the area, how to get involved as a volunteer and why preserving the area is so important.

The Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy End of Year Performance

Last Friday evening, the Ballet and Dance Academy students performed beautifully and impressed the crowd with the number of dance items, intricate choreography and incredible execution. Students have worked incredibly hard to prepare for this event and showcase their diligence and commitment to the Dance Program throughout the year. Well done to all students involved!

Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land – 2023

Following on from a wonderfully successful Yr 9 Camp, in partnership with Culture College, we will be offering a Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 15-22 April 2023, open to current Yr 9 and 10 students.

In this cultural immersion, students will revisit and build on the ideas they were introduced to last year during the Culture College incursion, or this year during Yr 9 Camp. After a brief stay at the Gulkula site students will travel to one of the Yolngu Homeland areas. This offers the opportunity for a much more personal, extensive and detailed exploration of Yolngu culture has been possible so far.

It would suit students who are ready and willing to consider more deeply the knowledge they gained previously and how to effect change for the future.

The cost of the tour is $4,925. A proposed itinerary and booking form are available on Pulse (see News section).

Bookings and payments should be made directly to Culture College, so please check their Terms and Conditions on the Booking Form.

Places are limited will be reserved upon payment of the deposit to Culture College.

Body Double

This Term in the Level 1 Art Gallery, Yr 9 Visual Arts students have had their collaborative portrait works on display. These works called ‘Body Double’ are the result of a cooperative approach to artmaking and reference the work of Julie Rrap, (one of Australia’s most celebrated artists) particularly her works – ‘Persona and Shadow’ and ‘Body Double’.

The students worked together to create a new figure, using images of themselves and by appropriating poses, settings or styles from significant works from art history. The large-scale group portraits are playful and engaging and are a delight to see.

Yr 8 STEAM

On Monday and Tuesday, Yr 8 engaged in two full days of STEAM. On the first day, students listened to the wonderful guest speaker Andrea Sosa Pintos – Senior Program Manager: Indo-Pacific Plastics Innovation Network at CSIRO, who spoke about the alarming rate of micro-plastics that we consume each week. (Apparently a credit card size amount!)

The students responded to Andrea and the above driving question by ideating, creating and planning a presentation of their solution/prototype, where one winner from each house was selected to demonstrate at a final REDx unveiling in Redlands Hall.

Congratulations to all of Yr 8 for their hard work to create some very innovative and effective prototypes!

Yr 8 Science Symposium

I had the pleasure of judging the Yr 8 finalists and their group Science projects on Thursday morning. It was so inspiring to hear each group communicate their hypotheses, the challenges they faced and their interesting scientific findings.

Congratulations to the following winners:

Lismore Northern Rivers Christmas Appeal

For most in our community, Christmas is a time for joy and celebration. But for many in Lismore, who lost homes and businesses in the recent flooding and are in the early stages of a costly disaster recovery, this holiday season will be one of hardship. This term, we are calling on the generosity of our Redlands community to support the residents of Lismore. We are asking each student to donate a small Christmas gift to the Northern Rivers Children’s Services. We hope these donated gifts will bring joy to a number of families this Christmas season.

Christian Studies

Student reflection on the Christian Studies Love thy Neighbour Incursion by Sophia Preece Yr7.

I found the incursion enjoyable, interesting and eye-opening. I felt this as the incursion consisted of a series of challenges which were fun, frustrating and pushed my thinking. However, the challenges also made me realise how people who are in poverty live.

The bag making challenge, while fun, was also quite frustrating and confusing, as sometimes they would send back bags that looked the same as the ones they took. During the medicine challenge it was really hard to try and understand something I couldn’t read.

In the end I found that both challenges opened my eyes to what inequality actually felt like, rather than just to know the meaning of the term. In addition, it allowed me to experience what it’s like to rely on people around me and the need to work together for survival.

Redlands 139th Annual Speech Night and Prize Giving

Last Friday, our Junior School students and staff enjoyed an uplifting day of activities and fundraising focused on the wellbeing of our students, teachers and our wider community. From Science incursions to aerobics classes to art workshops led by alumni artist Antonia Houben to initiative games to name but some of the activities, the students actively engaged in sessions together.

We were thrilled to raise almost $4,000 for Bear Cottage, a children’s hospital in Manly with whom Redlands has had a long connection and they were so humbled to receive the money from us this week.

My thanks to all involved: teachers, Secondary School students, parents who ran a BBQ and helped make fruit kebabs, and of course the students who fully embraced the day which had been coordinated by Mrs Clinton as Dean of Students.

Yr 6 2023 Student Leadership Nominations

On Monday, our Yr 6 2022 student leadership nomination process took place for our current Yr 5 cohort ahead of their transition into Yr 6 and the student leadership opportunities that come with this move. I am grateful to Mr Brakell and the Yr 5 team for the meticulous planning and organisation of the session, which it was a pleasure to be part of. I also enjoyed listening to the types of questions that Yr 5 asked teachers and some of our current Yr 6 students about student leadership as well as hearing the values that they looked for in leaders and hoped for themselves as a cohort.

The students were provided information on the various roles and then presented with the opportunity to self-nominate for any of the leadership positions listed below for which the students were encouraged to consider putting themselves forward for at least one.

  • Junior School Captains (one girl and one boy)
  • Arts Captains (one girl and one boy)
  • Sports Captains (one girl and one boy)
  • Environmental Captains (one girl and one boy)
  • House Captains (one girl and one boy per House – 8 in total)

Students were also able to nominate themselves for leadership involvement in areas such as technology, wellbeing and library as we aim to provide every student with an experience to lead in some form or another.

As I said to the Yr 5 cohort, I know that we have no shortage of potential school leaders who would be very capable representatives of the student body in 2023. Yrs 5 and 6 students, as well as teachers who know the group, can confidentially vote this week and then the captains will be announced for the first time at Speech Day on the last day of this term and presented with their leadership badges by our Principal, Mr Webber.

Prep Tennis Stars!

On Saturday night, Kathleen Chan, Anna Krapovnitskaya, Josh Ward, and Zandre Coussy took part in the Northern Suburbs Tennis Association (NSTA) Primary Schools Challenge representing Redlands!

Even though Kathleen and Anna played very well, they could not get the gold this time. Josh and Zandre won all their 5 games and finished 1st in their group!

We are all so proud of our Yr 2 Tennis players and so impressed with all the training that went into preparing for this event.

Yr 2 Learning about Thanksgiving Tradition

Our Yr 2 cohort enjoyed learning about the American tradition of Thanksgiving this week. We were so grateful to Mrs Mast who explained the meaning of Thanksgiving by reading us a book about the pilgrims, shared pictures of special food that is eaten at this time and most importantly, learnt that it is a special time to be grateful for so many things that we have in our lives.

To finish off a lovely afternoon, the children then made their own gratitude turkey decoration. Thanks so much Mrs Mast for coming and sharing such an important tradition with us all.

Christmas at Redlands

Next Tuesday we are celebrating Christmas in our Junior Campus Carols (student only event)

To get into the Christmas spirit and raise funds for Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker, all students and staff can wear Christmas mufti next Tuesday and bring a donation.

Artist Visit to Blue Class

Blue Class were fortunate to have Theo’s ‘Noushka’ visit to teach us about the enchantments of the forest environment. Noushka is an artist and was able to share a special magic with the children about fairy tales and how the forest is embedded in myths and stories. Noushka explained to us that: “Forests are very special places a bit like magic, the trees talk to each other in many ways. Under the ground a forest is called a biome, a special word for a place where lots of things live together in community, did you know that just walking in a forest and breathing the air can help make us healthy. In Japan they do something special…they call it shinroku…bathing in the forest”. Noushka helped Blue Class to make our own enchanted forest. Using our imaginations, the children created their own tree to plant together. We will make up our own stories for our trees to share.

A very warm thank you to Anne Levitch (aka Nuoshka) and Ali for giving their time and sharing such a magical moment with us.

The concert will begin at 10am and should conclude by 10.45am. The students will return to preschool for the rest of the day. Should you wish to take your child home, they can be collected from the preschool after the concert, once they have changed back into their Redlands uniform. No tickets are required for the concert and all family members are welcome.

COVID-19 Reminder

With the increase in positive COVID-19 cases in Sydney and the wider community, please be reminded of the key points from Mr Corcoran’s letter of 17 October to the Redlands community as outlined below.

  • students and staff must notify the school of a positive COVID-19 test in the same manner as before
  • while self-isolation is no longer mandatory, students and staff should only return to school if they no longer have any acute symptoms (sore throat, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath)
  • once their symptoms subside, students and staff must wear a mask in indoor settings on campus for 3 days after they return to school
  • if any students or staff members are household contacts of a positive COVID-19 case who is unwell at their home, they should also wear a mask in indoor settings at school while that person continues to have acute symptoms.

Thank you again for your continued support of the health and wellbeing of our school community noting the continued importance of keeping students at home if they are unwell.

Independant Sporting Association

ISA Code of Conduct

As we move into round 2 of the Summer ISA Sporting Season, we would like to draw your attention to the ISA Code of Conduct for both Players and Spectators. The full document is available on the Secondary School Sport page of Redlands Pulse and we encourage all parents and players to familiarise themselves with the expectations when participating in participating in ISA Sporting competitions.

GUIDELINES FOR PLAYERS

2.1       Once committed to a sport for the season, players must honour that commitment wholeheartedly. This same commitment applies to ISA representation. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

2.2       Players are expected to be modest in success and generous in defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion.  (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.3       Players are also expected to acknowledge, willingly and openly, good play by either school. Players should not celebrate the opposition’s mistakes. (Level of breach: 1)

2.4       Players should be positive in their approach to games and should adhere strictly to the rules/laws and spirit of the game.  The referee or umpire’s decision is final, and the Captain of the team is the only one who may ask for clarification of a decision at the appropriate time. (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.5       The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.6       Players shall never resort to violent or abusive language or behaviour or engage in unfair or illegal tactics to gain an advantage.  Racial vilification will not be tolerated under any circumstances. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.7        Players should be punctual and adhere to their school’s dress code.  The home team – and in particular the Captain should welcome the visiting team and its Captain.  At the conclusion of the game acknowledgment and thanks should be given to referees, umpires, officials such as scorers/touch judges and the opposition. (Level of breach: 1)

GUIDELINES FOR SPECTATORS

3.1       Spectators must remember that this is “kids” school sport, let them have fun. It is not the World Cup.

3.2       Spectators are expected to be positive role models. They must behave respectfully and courteously towards players, coaches, match officials and other spectators. (Level of breach: 1, 2 and 3)

3.3       Spectators are not to approach or address game officials or any of the opposing players, spectators or staff.  If a spectator has a genuine concern, this needs to be presented to their own school official who will determine any action to be taken. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.4       Unless invited onto a field/court, spectators must never encroach onto the field/court. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.5       Barracking should be enthusiastic and positive, but not designed to heckle, denigrate or unsettle opponents.  For example, barracking during a free throw or a kick at goal and so forth is always bad sportsmanship.  (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.6       Sledging and negative comments are totally unacceptable. Good play by either team should be recognised by applause. (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.7       It is never right to express disapproval of a referee or umpire’s decision, irrespective of his/her age. The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.8       Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence, rough or illegal play.  (Level of breach 2 or 3)

3.9       Visitors to the grounds should co-operate fully with any regulations or requests made by the host school, such as car parking, seating, dressing rooms and the placing of spectators.  At all times visitors should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave.  (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.10      Alcohol is not to be consumed at ISA fixtures. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

Basketball

We would like to introduce the Redlands “FAB 5” Girls and “FAB 5” Boys from the week. Nominations are received from each coach after their Saturday games and the team of the week is selected by the Basketball staff. Congratulations to all students selected into the team of the week for Round 5!

Redlands “FAB 5” Girls:

Alex Tanner: With a number of players in foul trouble throughout the game, Alex was required to step up and play all positions at some stage on Saturday. Playing the full 40 minutes and guarding the best player from the opposition, Alex more than stepped up to the challenge! Hitting 4 3’s during the game and making some huge plays down the stretch she was an integral part of the team’s success and helped the team get over the line in a thrilling one-point win.

Lucy Horton: Lucy demonstrated great hustle and tenacity. Out-rebounding taller players, diving on loose balls, sprinting back to cover the basket were among the many contributions Lucy made to the team on Saturday. Not only was her effort and skill-set crucial, but she also displayed a great attitude for the entire game.

Lara Wilson: Lara displayed great leadership qualities over the weekend and always does her best. She is always listening and taking on feedback from the coach to help her develop her skills.

Mati Carlyon: Mati is a great communicator on the court and is always the first to get back on defence or follow her teammates on the fast break. She scored a beautiful 3-pointer to get the team the win on Saturday.

Annalyse Rowe: Always continuing to look to develop her game and skillset, this week Annalyse put a large number of points on the board for her team. Not only did she have a huge impact on the game offensively, but she also played a pivotal role on the defensive end.

Redlands “FAB 5” Boys:

Jamie Sternberg: Jamie started the first play of the game with a nothing-but-net 3 pointer to get the team going. He nearly finished the game with a double-double in what was a near faultless performance.

James Greer: James looked to be aggressive on offence and made some tough finishes. He kept his composure in some critical moments to secure big stops defensively and get the team going in transition.

Hamish Olsen: Hamish is a clear leader for his team and hustles on both ends of the floor. He is always looking to improve and do what he can to help the team.

Toby Healey: Toby brought fantastic energy once again this week. He was a leader on defence and managed to out-rebound much taller players. He has made some great adjustments over the last few weeks to play tough defence without getting in foul trouble.

Finn Cowan: Finn brough the energy on defence for the entire game and managed to score 16 points of his own. His positive energy was infectious on the court and his celebrations were highlight reel worthy.

Redlands “FAB 5” Coach:

Erin Pacholke: Erin’s energy is unmatched. With the true Redlands’ spirit, she encourages and challenges her players to always do their best. Whether it’s coaching her team, assisting another team or getting the students cheering on the sidelines, she does it all with such passion for the game and with a smile on her face.

A reminder that all teams will play their last round for the term this Saturday 26 November. Best of luck to all of our students, please see game day reminders below:

ROUND 5: Saturday 26 NOVEMBER

Team Lists and Fixtures are on Redlands Pulse

Rowing

On Saturday 19 November the whole Rowing program attended the Independent School Championships held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith. This is the first time that we get to race against the majority of schools from NSW and the ACT making it the biggest single day regatta of any season.

Our students proved themselves to be very strong against this high standard of competition with 5 gold, 4 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Comparing ourselves against a number of single sex schools, in the overall points score our Boys finished in 4th out of 10 schools while our Girls finished in 4th position out of 24 schools, only being beaten by the very large girls’ schools. However in the combined coed trophy, Redlands won the regatta narrowly beating Kinross. This is an outstanding achievement by our combined program.

Looking ahead, information regarding the holiday training, January rowing camps and the ACT regatta in March will be available for families and students shortly.

Tennis

With the last NSTA round over the weekend ending with some close tiebreaker games, we are moving into the finals round for this competition. Congratulations to Redlands NSTA 1, 5, 8 and 14 who will play off in the finals! Please note all NSTA teams will still compete this weekend whether or not they were ranked 1-2 in their ladder. TNB will also continue with semis on 3 December and finals between only the two 2 teams on 10 December. The Development Squad will have their last training session for the term this weekend as well. With the end of the term drawing closer, please remember that attendance to training and Saturday sessions are still mandatory to ensure you are meeting Representative Sport requirements and you must email Ms Caitlin Wong to explain your absence should you miss out on a session. Wishing the best of luck to all NSTA players for their final match this term!

Here is your draw for this weekend. Congratulations to TNB 2 who are currently sitting at the top of the ladder and likely to make the finals! Please note semi-finals will be next weekend (3 Dec) and should your team make it to the playoff finals, you will then play again on 10 Dec. Emails will be sent out as I receive the results so please make sure you are checking them even when school is finishing up in Week 9.

Please contact Ms Caitlin Wong should you have any questions regarding Summer Tennis.

2022 School Boys and School Girls Tennis Tournament

Wednesday saw a busy day of tennis for Redlands at the 2022 School Boys and School Girls Tennis Tournament, held at Pennant Hills Park. In sunny but windy conditions, teams of Matteo Stucci and Isaac Swann, Jack Petering and Mischa Barton, Jessica Lee and Charlotte Wrigglesworth represented Redlands to the highest standards of skill and sportsmanship.

There were some fantastic results on the day with Isaac and Matteo along with Jessica and Charlotte all progressing further in the tournament. Special mention must go to Jack and Mischa who fought back in their doubles match, narrowly going down finally in a sudden death knockout.

The tournament will continue for the remainder of the week with the entire Redlands Summer Tennis program being represented.

Sailing

This week our sailors were challenged with difficult sailing conditions with large amounts of breeze for the sessions on Thursday. However, the sailors handle the breeze exceptionally with reefs in their Eliott 7’s completing an adventure challenge around the harbour. Once they reached Saturday, the wind had completely died for the start of the session however after a run through of the Vaikobi kit the wind filled in and the sailors were able to sail on the harbour with spinnakers.

This Saturday will be the last of the weekend opportunities to see the vaikobi kit, it will be in the Sports office during the week after the weekend. There will be an order form sent out shortly to explain the details and process. Any issues or questions about the kits please email Mr Pryor at lpryor@redlands.nsw.edu.au or check the website.

Fitness Centre

For all students using the Fitness Centre space, please continue to be aware of the following changes to the use of the Redlands Fitness Centre. Students are not be able to leave school grounds at the conclusion of their sessions. Students are required to change back into their school uniforms and prepare for 1st Period. To assist with this transition, the Fitness Centre will now be open from 6:30am – 7:55am with students able to join throughout the morning.

The High Performance sessions for our Redlands 1st Basketballers has been an overwhelming success and I cannot thank our Basketball Captains Oliver Kesby and Emilie Bessell for their support over these past few weeks. These tailored sessions will continue into Term 1 2023 and will also transition into our Winter Rep Sports with sessions tailored towards Netball, Rugby, Football and all other Winter Rep Sports.

We have had brilliant numbers through the Fitness Centre over the past week with students from all Age-Groups utilizing the space across all morning sessions. The Fitness Centre is the perfect space for students to build strength, speed and flexibility, key components of all Rep Sports at Redlands.

The Fitness Centre is an open and inclusive space for all Redlands athletes and, with sessions across all mornings, Monday to Friday, this is a space that can be used by all Age-Groups across the week.

Sessions start promptly at 6:30am and have sessions tailored towards athletes of any ability, size or skill.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

We will also shortly be announcing our Holiday Session Schedule which will run in the week prior to school returning in Term 1 2023. Students will be allowed to access the Fitness Centre across multiple sessions and train. Great preparation for both the Summer Sport Season as well as the Winter Sport Pre-Season.

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions or the Fitness Centre space as a whole.

3×3 Futsal Mini World Cup

A big thank you to Lachlan Binnekamp, Mark Danse, Sebastien Griffith and James Pocknee for organising a successful 3×3 Futsal Mini World Cup during Weeks 6 and 7. Congratulations to Italy for winning the Senior Competition (Simone Franceschi, Keian Murphy and Corey Twining), and Norway (Otto Ross-Sampson, Toby Healy and Hayden Mcleod) for winning the Junior competition.

A big thank you to our Director of Football, Gerry Gomez for assisting as referee and making sure the event was a success.

Representative Summer Sport Wrapping Up

Our mixed Basketball, Tennis, and Touch Football teams finished up their season last Saturday. Congratulations to all students on their participation and enthusiasm over the season. Thank you to the parents and carers who fed, watered and transported the children all over Sydney each Saturday morning to play their Representative Sport. Our Touch Football A team ended up undefeated for the second part of their season. Our Girls Basketball teams have one more round left this Saturday so we wish them luck as they play Kincoppal, Meriden and PLC.

For our students who participate in our Non-Representative program it has been great to get around and see you in action on Wednesday. From our surfers to our stand-up paddle boarders to our fitness students back at school, your enthusiasm is great to see. We even had some tennis players in our Non-Rep program step up and help out our Representative teams when we were short.

Return of Basketball Touch Football Singlets

As you are aware, these uniforms are owned by the School and hired out to families each season. A reminder was sent out to the families of mixed Basketball and Touch Football to return theirs by Monday 21 November. There are currently still some outstanding singlets to be returned. If they are not returned by Friday November 25 the replacement cost will be billed to your school account.

Those students in our Girls Basketball teams who have their final match this weekend can return theirs to the Sport Office on Monday 28 November. Please do not leave them with class teachers or at Junior Reception.

2023 Athletics Carnival

As you would be aware in 2023 our Athletics Carnival has been moved from Term 2 to Term 1 due to venues being unavailable due to World Cup being hosted in Sydney. In preparation for our School Carnival we will be running Field Event Pre Trials for the following events;
Shot Put
Long Jump
High Jump

Students will undertake a unit of Athletics in their PE lesson in Term 1 2023, reinforcing what was taught this year in High, Shot, Long and Discus with the only difference being the finalists for the carnival are not selected in PE lessons as they were this year.

The exciting element about these pre trials is that by devoting specific time to these individual events, students will have multiple attempts, but also have their 3 or 4 attempts measured on the day providing feedback.

If you would like your child to trial in the following field events, you will have to register them.  Once registrations close that is final, no late entries are accepted. Reminders for registration will come through Note Day, PE classes, class teachers and through Pulse.

Discus and Turbo Jav will be held on the day of the carnival and students can register in person on the day at this event using their entrant number.

You may enter one or all of these trials in your correct age group on the correct day.

Not everyone who attends these trials will progress through to the finals, but you will earn colour House points for trialing regardless of result.

For age groups it is the age your child turns this calendar year (For example if you child turns 10 next year (2023) they will compete in the Under 10s age group). The age group is determined by the year they turn in the year 2023.

Dance Curriculum

Congratulations – Avalon Thomas and Mia Kloiser-Jones

Congratulations to Curriculum Dance students Avalon Thomas (Year 11) and Mia Kloiser-Jones (Year 12), who were in Sharp Short Dance last week. Sharp Short Dance is FORM Dance Projects annual youth dance festival featuring short works by choreographers and dancers under the age of 21. Avalon and Mia performed their self-choreographed duo Begun, which won them the Dance Category of Gala Arts 2022.

After becoming finalists and dancing against many older choreographers and dancers, Avalon and Mia were offered a secondment at AMPA (Australian Music Performing Arts Academy), meaning they have the opportunity to watch the Academy’s end of year show and train with them for a week in January. This is an amazing achievement.

Ballet and Dance Concert

Congratulations to all the Curriculum students who performed in Friday night’s performance of Dancing Through Time. It was an exceptional performance and very exciting to have all the students back on the stage.

Music

It’s the most wonderful time…

Making and sharing music is one of the richest experiences life can offer us. It requires dedication, collaboration, confidence, teachability and often vulnerability, but the payoff is extraordinary with dividends in social connectedness, relationships and wellbeing (not to mention the cognitive benefits in the brain development of school aged children). One scientific study showed that the corpus callosum in the brains of students who engaged in quality music-making activities before the age of 7 was significantly larger than their non-musician counterparts.  Just the same, we don’t need science to tell us what we already know and that is, simply – Music makes life better. With two semesters of diligent practice and growth under their belts, the music resounding across our campuses at the moment cements that this really is the most wonderful time of the year.

We can’t wait to share our work with the community in the weeks ahead.

Director of Music P-12

JUNIOR CAMPUS CURRICULAR MUSIC

Spotlight on…Redlands House & Transition Gold

Redlands House Orange Juniors performed a fabulous ‘singalong’ on Monday, with parents and guests in awe of our youngest learners! The children sang and moved to their favourite songs, including ‘Jack in the Box’, ‘Larry the Lobster’ and ‘Jingle Bells’ with Ms Moses. (Click image below for a bit of Christmas cheer!) It was a joyous afternoon of music making and we can’t wait for Yellow Class and Blue Class to share their singalong performances tomorrow with Mrs Anderson.

Redlands House Seniors and TG also have an exciting performance coming up – The Redlands House & TG Rainbow Concert! The children had such fun rehearsing on the stage this week in their costumes, and they were also excited to do a mini performance to their Yr 5 buddies in 5W. Yr 5 enjoyed watching their buddies sing and even surprised them with a little performance of their own with a sneak peek at their song for Speech Day.

Transition Gold are looking forward to next week’s concert performing to their parents and friends where they get to take the stage to find all the colours of the rainbow….even Gold! They are all ready to dazzle parents next Wednesday 10am in Dunnet Hall.

SENIOR CAMPUS CURRICULAR MUSIC

Cultivating rich learning to the very end!

The year may be winding up, but our Senior Music students are enthusiastically packing as much learning and exploration as they can into the remaining weeks! Yr 7 had a fantastic exploration of Gamelan Music this week as part of their ‘around the world’ musical adventures. Yr 8 are wrapping up their ‘Subject Mash’ project (Music plus another of their favourite subjects) with some dynamic cross-curricular applications happening. Yr 9 are creating short trop-fest style Australian Films and then learning about underscoring to create mood and support narrative, while Yr 10 have taken the reins for their collaborative ‘Passion Projects’ in a direction of their choosing! Needless to say – our newest cohort of Yr 12 musicians have launched out of the gate with inspired compositions and performance ideas already emerging. We’re looking forward to the final presentations for the Yr 8-10 projects next week, and to seeing our Yr 12’s run the year ahead with their trademark creative flair and dedication.

It’s beginning to look a lot like…..Christmas!

Christmas Carols can be heard across Redlands with the Junior Campus Carols Service on Tuesday 29 November in Dunnet Hall and the Secondary School Carols Service on Friday 2 December in the Fahl Garden. From the delights of ‘Joy to the World’ to the slumber of ‘Away in a Manger’ and a few other surprises in between, both Carols services – accompanied by Concert Bands, String Ensembles and Tutor bands will prove to be a fun moment for our student community as they focus on the true meaning of Christmas.  Whilst one day, we would like to open these events up for families to join us, we thank you for understanding the current climate that sees these events as student-only gatherings.
