Issue 36 2021 - 18 Nov 2021

From The Principal

A key focus this term has been on the wellbeing of students and ensuring that we provide opportunities for connection and a variety of engaging and interactive learning experiences. The leadership training organisation Burn Bright has been running a range of workshops for various Year Groups, which have enabled age appropriate development for students and the chance to connect in a different forum. On Tuesday this week, Year 9 students participated in a Design Thinking Day run by Young Change Agents, which supported them to explore innovative solutions to a range of societal challenges, such as our impact on the environment and alternative energy sources. Tables that produce light through utilising phosphorescent algae was one of the more creative solutions for reducing the School’s energy consumption!

Year 7 and 8 students have been involved in STEAM projects over the last two weeks and I was honoured to welcome Dr Charlie Veron as a guest speaker for the Year 8 program, focused on the Great Barrier Reef. Dr Veron is known as the Godfather of Coral, through his work in identifying new coral species and was the subject of a recent Australian Story episode. His life story is inspirational, from someone who really struggled at school, then gained a scholarship at university through an aptitude assessment. His passion for the natural environment is infectious.

One of the most impressive aspects about Redlands is the genuine engagement of staff in their professional learning and desire to improve practice. In a new initiative this year, Head of Teaching and Learning, Matt Bentley, led the formation of collaborative Professional Learning Teams, in which staff selected a key research question to investigate, focused on improving student outcomes. The program was run in partnership with support from UTS researchers regarding methodology and data analysis. Given the extra demands on staff this year, it was inspiring to attend the session on Monday, when group findings and outcomes were presented to colleagues. Groups were enthusiastic about their projects, had obviously enjoyed the collaboration and could clearly articulate how they could apply what they had learned to assist student learning and outcomes. We are looking forward to continuing this program into 2022.

Junior School Speech Day and Secondary School Speech Night

As communicated by letter yesterday, due to the Public Health Order requirements for external venues, we have had to move the Junior School Speech Day and Secondary School Speech Night events on campus in Dunnet Hall.

Here are the details for the events:

Junior School Speech Day
10:00am Wednesday 1 December
Dunnet Hall, Redlands Junior Campus

Secondary School Speech Day
2:00pm Wednesday 1 December
Dunnet Hall, Redlands Junior Campus

Due to the current venue capacity restrictions, only those Junior School students receiving a Prize and Secondary School students receiving a Prize or Scholastic Button, as well as some student musicians and speakers, will be in attendance in Dunnet Hall. All other students are expected to attend School and engage with the live-streamed event in their classroom (Junior) or Tutor classroom (Secondary). We anticipate each event to run for approximately 1.5 hours.

With the scheduled changes to restrictions governing schools from 1 December, we are pleased to be able to welcome one (fully-vaccinated) parent or carer of each student receiving a prize or scholastic button to these events. For all other parents and carers, the live-stream links will be communicated shortly.

The parents and carers of Junior School Prize recipients will be informed of this tomorrow, while the lists of Secondary School Prize and Scholastic Button recipients will be posted on iLearn for students and on Redlands Pulse for parents and carers on Monday 29 November. More specific information on each of these events will be communicated by Section Heads shortly, including a link to the Prize Giving Programs for parents and carers to access remotely.

While we are disappointed that we are unable to bring our whole community together in person to celebrate the end of the school year, we look forward to sharing these special celebrations with students, parents, carers and staff in this revised format.

Community Update

With final IB assessments wrapping up and HSC exams well underway, the Class of 2021 represents our 135th cohort of Year 12 students to sit their final exams at Redlands. The School’s first ever Year 12 student was Sophia Liggins, niece of one of our co-founders, Miss Elizabeth Liggins, and one of the first five students to attend on the school’s opening day, July 14, 1884. Sophia was the only candidate at the School to take the HSC equivalent (then called the Senior University examination) in 1887, passing all her five subjects with flying colours. She went on to become a teacher and published writer.

Just over a century later, Stacy Hume followed in her footsteps when she became the first (and again solo) Redlands student to sit and be awarded the International Baccalaureate, having also completed the HSC in 1989 the previous year. Since leaving school, Stacy completed a Masters in Communication Management and has worked in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States across many sectors that include media and communications, government, politics and marketing.

At Redlands, we have a standing commitment to sustainably managing the facilities and grounds of the School whilst continually engaging our students and the wider community in this endeavour.

Over the past few years Redlands has introduced a number of new initiatives to reduce our impact on the environment with the aim to change and shape the way future generations live.  These initiatives include the installation of solar panels, upgrading to energy efficient lighting, recycling of paper, green waste, textiles and uniforms and a partnership with Climate Clever Schools, which enables us to track our current carbon footprint and set goals to continually improve through the remainder of 2021 and beyond.

Sustainability is a focus that we pursue with rigorous and disciplined intent, across our curriculum, our operations, our resources and our community.  Last week Dana Casimaty and Kim Flatman from our Development and Alumni team hosted a webinar on Sustainability & ESG (Environmental-Social-Governance) Investing for our Alumni community.  The expert panel were all Redlanders who are making significant contributions within this important and trending realm.  More information on the  expert panel of alumni from the Sustainability & ESG Investing webinar can be found here.

We are excited about the opportunities that these important Sustainability initiatives and leadership groups present and invite you and your family to support our objective to be recognised as a sustainability innovator, locally and globally.

With the end of another school year approaching, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association continue to actively bring our various groups together. A number of social events still remain in the calendar and these can be found here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Foundation

In the absence of reunions and face-to-face events we were delighted to host last Thursday a topical webinar on Sustainability & ESG Investing (Environmental-Social-Governance) for our Alumni community.

This was a great opportunity to hear from expert fellow Redlanders working in this field and we would like to thank them for volunteering their time.

  • Chris Nunn, Class of 1994 & School Captain
AMP Capital Real Estate, Head of Platform Operations and ESG Investing
  • Phil Williams, Class of 2000
ERM: Environmental Resource Management, Partner, Sustainability & Climate Change
  • Jeff Brown, Class of 2016 & School Captain
UBS Asset Management, Global Fixed Income Analyst

Sustainability is a focus that Redlands pursue with rigorous and disciplined intent, across our curriculum, our operations, our resources and our community.

Parents and carers may be interested to know that Redlands has a 61kWp solar panel system on Junior Campus roof that generates 82.4Mwh. The School estimates that the system will produce approximately 70,000 kW hours per annum, whilst reducing our Greenhouse Gas emissions by approximately 80,000 kg of Carbon Dioxide per annum. This equates to permanently removing 65 small cars from the road or enough energy to power 20 households per year. Lights on all three campuses have been upgraded to efficient LED lights with light sensors, and occupancy sensors are fitted in new buildings to automate the control of lighting.

The Redlands Learning Hub on the Senior Campus incorporates many ESG initiatives; for example

  • Rainwater reuse for part landscape irrigation
  • Natural cross and mixed mode ventilation
  • Natural lighting including skylights and energy efficient lighting
  • Passive sun shading
  • Night time purging

Redlands families who are interested to visit the Redlands Learning Hub will have the opportunity next year, once COVID restrictions for external visitors have been relaxed.

In the meantime, we invite you to view the video showcasing this wonderful development kindly supported by many members of our community.

Readying ourselves for Christmas

The tree is up, and although there are no gifts underneath it, the Anglicare Christmas Toys ‘n’ Tucker drive has raised $1,535 so far, but we still need your help! Service Captains, Charlie and Alex are hoping to raise $5000 by Speech Day on the 1st of December, and if every family in the Secondary School donated just $10, we’d be well over that goal! Please dig deep to share a little joy this Christmas! https://www.gofundme.com/f/redlands-toys-and-tucker

Engaging with self and others in Yr 9

Over the past week we have really been focused on engaging with self and others. Our Yr 9 students enjoyed their day of reflection facilitated by Burn Bright. The Ignite group focused on boys’ development, exploring healthy male role models and definitions of masculinity. The Spark group of girls focused on breaking down social barriers and enhancing emotional intelligence. I was lucky enough to visit both groups during the day and can attest to the range of emotions experienced by each group – there were some tears shed, but I was assured they were happy tears! Even though this year has been challenging, it was great to be able to set aside this time, at the end of Term 4, for the students to work together on self-development and engaging with others.

STEAMing on with Yr 8

The Yr 8 STEAM program commenced today. The focus of the two days explores what can we do to save our coral reefs? Today I co-judged the STEAM presentations, with Ms Vale, Iris Buisman and Jacob Gold, our Environment Captains. We all sat in my office watching the Year 8 presentations on Zoom, and were stunned by the inventiveness and collaboration which characterised them. All four groups, across the four Houses, offered strong presentations, with effective visuals. All presentations were beautifully and articulately explained, with some offering astounding ideas for improving the Great Barrier Reef. Today’s winner went to Dumolo Red who skilfully unpacked the damage caused by the Crown of Thorn Starfish, and offered a complex and well-considered solution. Brilliant work! Huge thanks go to Mrs Wendy Duckworth who has tirelessly planned and executed two STEAM programs in the past two weeks, with Yr 7 and 8, and all of the Science teachers and tutors who have supported the students along the way.

Science Symposium Yr 10

Over the past few weeks, Year 10 students have been engaged in a Student research Project (SRP) for Science. The Science class teachers have chosen the three top projects from their class, and today I was privileged to be able to judge a selection of SRPs from Yr 10. The judging was based on the following criteria:

  • Best communication/presentation
  • Most impressive scientific methodology
  • Most original idea

It was inspiring to be able to hear how the students undertook their scientific research and the interesting insights which emerged for them. I also found it really interesting how each student’s idea emerged for them. For some it was personal experience, personal interest or simply a curiosity that they wanted to explore further. I would like to congratulate the following students, whose projects really impressed me today.

Student Leaders Town Hall

The Yr 12 Student Leadership team held their first Town Hall this week, where they met with students of Year 10 to explore student-wellbeing and the pastoral care program. The forum provided an opportunity for students to relay their largely positive feedback on the return to campus and for them to share new ideas and initiatives for the year ahead. The Year 12s are looking forward to continuing these meetings with students in other year groups over the course of the next week.

Yr 12 2021 Early Entry

To date, 77 students have received early offers for university courses for 2022. This is a wonderful tribute to our students, their parents and the support of the Careers and University Advisors, Ms Hurst and Ms Fowler.

Yr 12 (2021) Valedictory is taking place on 1 February at The Big Top Luna Park.

We are so excited to be able to reconnect with our Yr 12 cohort and their parents early next year to celebrate their many achievements. Please purchase your tickets this week through TryBooking.

BYOD Parent Purchasing Portal

Redlands has negotiated a special education deal for parents purchasing their child’s new digital device, through one of its partners, JB Hi-Fi. Parents have the option to purchase from any retailer of their choice however we have selected JB HiFi as they provide sound warranty and servicing options. The JB Hi-Fi Parent Purchasing Portal and further information can be accessed here.

Communicating your child’s absence with the Secondary School Office

Please be specific if your child is unwell. When emailing to inform us of a student absence, please clearly outline your child’s symptoms. If you tell us that your child is ‘unwell’, with no explanation of symptoms, we will assume a Covid-19 test is required. Additionally, we kindly ask that you are vigilant about sharing the negative Covid-19 test with ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au before your child is returned to school. Unfortunately, if this does not happen, parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child from school. Our priority is our community’s safety and our capacity to enable our Year 12 students to sit their examinations. Currently we have students sitting IB examinations and from next Tuesday, the HSC examinations begin. We sincerely appreciate the cooperation of parents in following safe practices as we move through this next stage of the pandemic.

Amelie Heard – Year 11

I’m excited to introduce the School for Life Foundation, which operates in rural parts of Uganda and delivers an incredible quality of education to students (preschool to year 12) and works to break the cycle of poverty. The school employs locals and is built sustainably, and equips students with practical, lifelong skills. During Covid-19, School for Life delivered learning packages to the students weekly.

I’ve have had the pleasure of travelling to Uganda with School for Life in 2019 to see their schools and meet the students. I was blown away by the standard of education.

On 23 November, School for Life is running an inaugural Giving Day, a period of 24 hours during which all funds donated will be tripled by supporters who are matching donations. The money raised will go straight to funding girls’ education, boarding, skills training, counselling, mentoring, menstrual hygiene and health programs.

It would be incredible to have the support of Redlands families! If you’re interested in having your donation tripled, please follow this link. Thank you so much for your support!

Year 12 Students

This year, the Year 12s are fundraising for M’lop Tapang, a Cambodian non-profit organization that provides aid to Cambodian families in the form of education, food-provision and financial support. We will be hosting a fundraiser for M’lop Tapang in the next few weeks where everyone will have a chance to help support this important cause.

This term, we will be opening a GoFundMe where everybody will be able to vote for whether Mr Millham will shave his beard or not! If the goal is met, Mr Millham will be shaved at school on Friday 26 December in Week 8.

Redlands has had a strong connection with M’lop Tapang over the years and all of the money we collect will allow them to help Cambodian students, families, businesses and communities. Make sure to get involved to make an impact in the lives of these people!

Toys and Tucker

Hi, we’re Alex and Charlie, the new Service captains for 2022 and we are launching the Toys ‘n’ Tucker fundraiser for 2021.

This year, our first service initiative is the Anglicare Christmas Appeal. Toys’ n’ Tucker is an initiative of Anglicare Sydney which tries to share the joy of Christmas by providing food and gifts for those who might otherwise go without. This past year has been more challenging than ever before, especially for the most disadvantaged in society. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we’re unable to run the Toys’ n’ Tucker drive as usual, with every family bringing donations to be packed by Anglicare into hampers for families in need. Instead, this year, Anglicare is encouraging all of us to donate, and they will be able to organise the hampers.

So, how will it work?

You can donate money through the link provided below

https://gofund.me/2e6d8ee4

Anglicare will use the donated funds to buy hampers items at wholesale prices

Hampers will be packed at their Villawood Warehouse

They will deliver hampers straight to peoples’ doors, bringing the joy of Christmas with them.

We aim to raise $5000, and once we have reached that, we will host a Christmas themed mufti day! We hope that every family will be able to donate at least $10. Let’s dig deep to share a little joy this Christmas!

Thanks!

Week 6 Burn Bright Spark and Ignite Program

On Friday last week Yr 9 students engaged in collaborative challenges that explored concepts of leadership and wellbeing. At the start of the day students were split into gender groups. The boys explored healthy male role models and were challenged to think about the traditional concepts and perceptions of manhood. The students were engaged and participated in challenging conversations and integrity, strength and respect. The girls explored the pressures in navigating peer pressure, body image and expectations in online digital spaces. The girls opened their hearts and minds and came together as a community to build confidence, gratitude and emotional intelligence. At the end of the day all the students reconnected as a cohort and participated in different activities that explored friendships, connection and empowerment as young adults in the 21st century. We are so proud of how the students engaged in these activities and saw the invaluable impact it had on them.

Student reflection: Liam McFarlane

As I entered today I had an open and growth mindset, I was expecting a large slide show with complementary activities here and there, but my assumption was completely wrong. Stepping into Redlands Hall today I first noticed how the girls and the boys had been separated into different congregations. My first thought on this is that each workshop focuses on how each gender’s brain works differently. As a young man, I know that I approach tasks and barriers very differently from my twin sister, even though we are both growing teenagers experiencing youth life issues and high school life. Also, I believe students who engage in gender-based activities may feel more comfortable and safe, speaking about their issues with people of the same gender rather than a multi-gendered class. The male workshops started by creating great bonds with people we did not know as well and we opened up about ideas and thought we might keep inside and hide from people in other situations. These activities consisted of a speed dating like concept while spending 1-2 minutes with each person telling each other our most embarrassing moments in life, funniest memory and numerous other topics. This created a feeling in our minds that the space we were working in was a safe one while opening up and speaking about topics we may not otherwise talk about is okay and typically brings more positives than negatives. In addition, we completed several activities which would get the blood flow running while also incorporating a lot of life skills including teamwork, self-awareness, critical thinking, decision making, problem-solving, effective communication and building relationships. Overall, I believe our Year Group were very fortunate to have had this opportunity to engage in single-sex classes as part of our learning journey into adulthood.

Week 7 Design Challenge Day: Young Change Agents

On Tuesday students worked in class groups to explore relevant issue based challenges to develop empathy, ideation, validation and prototyping. Students worked in small groups to develop a variety of pitched and prototypes. They then presented these ideas in the afternoon to the cohort and reflected on the effectiveness of their ideas. Students jumped straight into the process and worked really hard to develop some really interesting ideas. Working with their peers in class groups allowed them to collaborate with a variety of friends on different issues.

Student reflection: Kabir Yohannan

Our cohort got the opportunity participate in a design challenge to further our understanding of the design process and allow us to offer solutions to issues the world faces. The program consisted of many team building exercises, but our main task was to generate a solution to an issue of our choice. My group suggested creating an app which tracks your carbon emissions so that you can compare your carbon footprint with both the national average and your community. We thought that people will be incentivised to become more eco-friendly this way. As a result of the design challenge my ability to design and collaborate with others has definitely improved.

NAPLAN Student Readiness Testing: Friday 19 November Period 5

On Friday, Yr 9 students will participate in the NAPLAN School Readiness Test during their usual English lessons on Friday 19 November. The 20 minute online practice test is a requirement for all schools to undertake as part of their transition to NAPLAN online next year. Individual student results are not recorded. In preparation, all students will require a fully charged laptop and a set of compatible earphones.

BURN BRIGHT – Inside Out Leadership: Leadership Starts from Within

This week Yr 8 engaged in a leadership program designed specifically to assist them in acknowledging that before we lead, we must first start to look within. It is the exploration of leadership from an early age that builds and develops strong, resilient and empathetic leaders who are willing to serve and put others first. Whilst Yr 8 may not have a badge or hold a particular leadership position, an introduction to key leadership concepts and an understanding of how to lead one’s self is vital for future development. Throughout the day, students explored the power of our influence, servant leadership, resilience, the importance of healthy relationships and fostering an understanding that we are always leading in some capacity. Students were challenged to recognise how they can become effective leaders and use their influence from a young age.

The key outcomes from the day:

  • Understand they have influence and be challenged on how they are using that influence.
  • Identify the qualities of a good leader and recognise their own strengths and the strengths of others.
  • Improve their sense of self and enhance their self-confidence.
  • Develop a capacity to overcome challenges and be resilient.
  • Seek to foster positive friendships and look out for each other to enhance a greater sense of belonging.
  • Understand the importance of service and start becoming a person who serves others.
  • Appreciate diversity and celebrate differences.

Expectations

As the holidays approach, it becomes harder to focus in school. With this in mind, it is important for students to stay focused during these last few weeks as their lives tend to become busier with the end of year celebrations and events. It is crucial for students to continue to review materials for classes to prepare for the demands of Yr 9. We want to make sure students finish the school year as strong as they can and these few steps below can help them stay focused till the end of the year.

Prioritise Sleep

It’s tempting for students to go to sleep later as the days get longer. However, missing sleep is a major cause of behaviour and attention problems in students. A well-rested child can focus, learn and thrive as they finish out the school year.

Have a Routine

With all the extra events, deadlines for school and cocurriculars occurring and lives slowly going back to normality it can be hard to stick to a routine. These small changes can lead to tuning out and acts of defiance. Dependable routines allow students to know what to expect and allow them to focus when it’s time to change activities

Return to Sport

Return to Sport has been a great success in the Secondary School. Students have been excited to participate in face-to-face Sport. A reminder of the key guidelines for the program is below.

Mask-wearing

Mask-wearing is required when traveling between sports venues and on school grounds (this includes students walking or traveling by bus to or from school)

Secondary School students must wear masks in indoor sports venues at all times when not exercising, including in change room and bathroom facilities

Change Rooms and Uniform

School change room access will be limited and students are encouraged to wear their PE uniform to school on days they have Sport training.

Student Attendance

STEAM

Last Thursday and Friday, Yr 7 were given the opportunity to work in their Tutor Groups to build a sustainable world during two exciting days of STEAM. It was fantastic to see our students collaborate and interact in this multi-disciplinary learning environment – creating and navigating complex Minecraft virtual worlds, problem-solving via Zoom link with our Yr 12 Student Leaders, where each student took on various roles to facilitate this exciting experience. It was lovely to watch our cohort involve themselves with such enthusiasm and to see how incredibly talented they are in this space.

Debating Team National Semi-Final

This morning, the dream run of our Yr 6 Debating team came to an end in the semi-final of this year’s National Independent Schools Virtual Debating competition. The team came up against strong opposition in previous winners, Northside Montessori School, but should feel incredibly proud of the robust debate today and their combined achievements this year, particularly given the challenges of virtual debating. Congratulation to the team for their efforts over the course of the year.

2 x Academic Effort and Achievement

2 x Outstanding Approach to Learning

2 x Citizenship

In addition, there are some major prizes awarded in Yr 6 only and these will be announced to the cohort on Friday afternoon too. All of these prizes will be presented on Speech Day which will also be the occasion for the eagerly-anticipated announcement of our 2022 Student Leaders from our current Yr 5 cohort.

As per the current restrictions outlined in the letter from Mr Corcoran, only ONE parent per prize winner will be able to be on campus subject to them being healthy on the day, being fully vaccinated and pre-registering. The event will be livestreamed to all in our community to watch and as was the case last year, could allow interstate and overseas family to watch too.

Year 6 Graduation Assembly

As shared last week, another significant event at the end of this term will be our Year 6 Graduation Assembly on Tuesday 30 November. This will be a student only event with Year 6 and some teachers in the hall and all other Junior School students and staff watching on livestream, which we have set up for all Year 6 family members to also enjoy as well. The link and passcode are embedded in the flyer but are also below. A final reminder will be sent the day before.

Junior School Water Slide Day – Monday 29 November

Having also shared this with students in assembly this week, we are excited to also let families know that we have organised for three large water slides to be set up on the oval for the Junior School students to enjoy on the final Monday of term. Each year group will have a designated time on the slides to ensure year groups do not mix and after their afternoon time slot. Yr 6 will stay on for an after school social gathering in the piazza as part of their final week of primary schooling celebration.

The day will be a mufti day for students who will need to bring appropriate swimmers, a rash vest board shorts and a towel. Sunscreen will be provided in advance of the students’ session and I know that this will be a joyful activity for the students to enjoy at the end of a big year. A reminder will be in Note Day next week too.

Supporting Others at Christmas

We are committed to continuing to support Anglicare and the Matthew Talbot Homeless Hostel as we always do at Christmas and Ms McKenzie has outlined ways in which our community might consider doing this in the current climate.

Anglicare

Supporting Anglicare’s Toys and Tucker is online due to COVID. The way we give is different but the need is the same, if not greater this year. You have an opportunity as a family to choose what you might buy for another family this Christmas. For more information about this watch Anglicare Toys and Tucker video here. The shopping link is here: Toys ‘n’ Tucker website – have fun online shopping!

Matthew Talbot Homeless Hostel

Matthew Talbot strives to make the people feel welcome at their service. One easy way to do this is to provide for their basic needs. Help them have a warm shower and clean clothes so they know someone cares.

This is where we come in – we are collecting basic toiletries, socks and underwear at each of the Receptions on the Junior Campus if you would like to contribute. Deodorant isn’t just deodorant – it is love, soap is respect, shampoo signals hope. Toothbrush and paste equals welcome. Imagine what a difference we can make for those who need help this season.

Thank you for your consideration of supporting those less fortunate, a value we have always highlighted in our community at Redlands.

Yr 6 Allwell Assessments for Yr 7, 2022

Parents are reminded that Yr 6 students who are moving to Yr 7 at Redlands will be undertaking Allwell assessments next Thursday 25 November on site in Yr 6 classrooms. These assessments will provide the Secondary School with some excellent current data on each child to plan for their learning moving into Yr 7. Students not continuing at Redlands will engage in other learning tasks here at school on this morning.

Tis the season to spread kindness

As parents and educators, we all want our children to grow up healthy and successful. We also want our children to be grateful for what they have been given and have compassion for those who are in need. Teaching your children the spirit of giving, showing them the importance of thinking of others and modelling kindness are important ways to help children grow into productive and loving members of our world. There is no better time to demonstrate this than in the lead up to Christmas. In the Prep we are starting to get excited about decoration making, holiday plans and gift giving and receiving. After the year we have had, my wish is for our learners to enjoy every minute of the exciting weeks leading up to Christmas.

As the excitement grows, I hope that you will join me in encouraging our students to think of others who may not be as fortunate at this time. Those who may have lost loved ones this year and are hurting, those who may live rough or those who suffer physically or mentally. Our message at Redlands Prep will be to show compassion and to demonstrate their ‘superhero’ characteristics of kindness to those who may need it.

Redlands has a long history of supporting Anglicare and the Matthew Talbot Homeless Hostel. If you would like to join us in encouraging compassion in our students while supporting people and families in need, please read the information below from our Chaplain, Miss Fiona McKenzie.

Supporting Anglicare’s Toys and Tucker is online due to Covid-19. The way we give is different, but the need is the same, if not greater this year. On Thursday November 25, Prep students will be dressing up to help us celebrate Christmas together.

Students are encouraged to come dressed in Christmas themed Mufti clothes (Christmas colours or Christmas Angel wings, Santa hats, stars and sparkles etc This links to our Junior Campus Carol Service.

Matthew Talbot Homeless Hostel

Matthew Talbot strives to make the people feel welcome at their service. One easy way to do this is to provide for their basic needs. Help them have warm shower and clean clothes so they know someone cares.

This is where we can help.  Redlands is collecting basic toiletries, socks and underwear at Prep Reception. These necessities are more than just things, they will providing what people need to feel self-respect. Imagine what a difference we can make for those who need help this season.

Week 8 important details for Prep families

Next week we have some very exciting events planned for our Prep students. Please take note of specific details below.

Thursday 25 November

Carol Service

Students are encouraged to come dressed in Christmas themed mufti clothes to help celebrate Christmas together at our Carol Service.  Please note that the Service finishes at 2.30pm so our Kindergarten car line may start a few minutes late on this day, we thank you for your patience with this.

Friday 26 November

Prep Picnic Day

Our Prep students will be celebrating their Picnic Day at school this year. We have a great day of activities lined up for everyone. Classes will rotate around three activities: Christmas craft making, games on the oval and watching a weird and whacky Science Show! After rotations, students will sit with their grades and teachers and have a picnic together at lunchtime.

After lunch, we are all in for a treat as Mrs Clinton will be teaching everyone a dance in readiness for or first ever Prep flash-mob! The afternoon will then calm down into popcorn eating and movie watching. Normal pick-up time is planned.

What to bring and what to wear:

PE uniform, hat, recess, picnic style lunch, drink bottle and a towel, if possible, to sit on to create a Picnic style atmosphere.

PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO CHANGES TO SCHEDULE THERE WILL BE NO LUNCH OR RECESS ORDERS ON FRIDAY 26 NOVEMBER.

It should be a fun day and an exciting way to be together under COVID safe measures.

Prep Presentation Day

We are excited to be live streaming our Prep Presentation Day with you this year. As you know, the Presentation Day will be different. We will have Year 2 in Dunnet Hall this year while Kindergarten and Year 1 will be watching from their rooms. The power of hearing our students’ voices is important so we will be hearing from some of our Year 2 students throughout the Presentation. I look forward to sharing the experience with you all.

A reminder that all students can be picked up from 12.15pm on 30 November. A staggered carline will aid this process.

Kindergarten   12.15-12.30pm (car park)

Year 1                12.15-12.30pm (Allister st)

Year 2                12.30-12.45pm (carpark)

Lucy Hill Library

A message from Mrs Roberts

Thank you for your support of the Lucy Hill Library this year and we are pleased to advised that around 100 students completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge. These certificates have been printed and will come home with students soon.

Library borrowing has ceased for this year and given the short time left till the school holidays we only have one full week of school to get all the books back on the shelves ready for 2022. Please ensure that your loans and your children’s books come back to the library on 22 November.

Again, thank you for all your support this year and I am so excited about 2022 and all it will bring for our young readers.

Behaviour is Communication

A message from Mr Digiacomo, Junior Campus Counsellor.

It’s not always easy to recognise a challenging behaviour in its early phases. It’s a part of being human that we all engage in behaviour that confronts others at times. Tantrums are common in young children, and some children may exhibit additional behaviours such as ignoring their parents. However, behaviour can become problematic when it is damaging to the child or others, when it prevents the child from participating in life experiences, and when it is persistent and severe. As a parent, your task is to figure out what your child is trying to communicate to you through their actions. What do these actions say about their needs and what’s going on in their lives? With this understanding, you can better figure out how to help your child meet their needs, such as finding strategies to encourage them to communicate in other, more acceptable ways.

Complete an ABC Chart to try to unpack your child’s behaviour.

He has been playing alone while I get dinner ready.

My son was in the lounge with me as I was preparing dinner. He continued to make noises that gradually became louder. His younger sister entered the living room.

He hit his sister.

I dashed into the room, yelling at him. I brought my daughter into the kitchen with me.

I’m completely spent. I can’t leave him alone because he’ll end up hurting his sister.

An example of how to look at some possible unmet needs in this situation:

Possible unmet needs:

It appears he hits his sister more often when he isn’t paying attention to me or when I’ve been occupied for a while. I believe he is hitting his sister to grab my attention and entice me to return to him.

Behaviour

Strategy

When he is hitting his sister and I’m doing something else.

Helping him to meet his need for interaction and engagement throughout the day. Don’t leave him alone for long periods of time.

Keep conversing with him while I am occupied.

If at all feasible, include him in daily duties.

When I’m busy, assist him in doing something he appreciates that is close or in my line of sight.

Secondary Sport

It was wonderful to see the Redlands Sport program come to life on Saturday as our Touch football, Basketball and Tennis programs launched their Saturday programs.

As we move into Week 8, a selection of our Representative Sports will commence mixing of cohorts as we prepare for a round of friendly fixtures on Saturday 27 November. It is important to note that mixing will only occur where required for team selections and not all students will be moving towards this model.

In line with the community sport guidelines, we are now at the point where students who are over 16 and not double vaccinated will not be able to participate in training and fixtures that occur off campus. Can I please encourage you to provide the school with your child’s vaccination status in order for them to continue to participate in Redland Sport.

  • Mask-wearing is required when traveling between sports venues and on school grounds (this includes students walking or traveling by bus to or from school).
  • Secondary School students must wear masks in indoor sports venues at all times when not exercising, including in change room and bathroom facilities.

Off-Site Training and Vaccinations

  • In line with the community sport guidelines, students aged 16 and older who attend most of our off-site facilities must be fully vaccinated and will be required to show proof of vaccination status to facility staff on arrival. More specific information has been communicated to these students.

Sports Prize Giving

On Wednesday we held our annual Sports Prize Giving Assembly where we recognised the efforts of our students involved in our Representative Sports Program during 2021. With current COVID guidelines we held the assembly virtually with prize-winners learning of their nomination while in class watching with their peers which was an exciting element not conducted before. The awards were nominated by the coaches of each sport and their respective teams over the duration of the season. Realistically Sports Prize Giving is a day where we can only present to a few but is where we acknowledge all.It has long been thought that the many facets of playing sport—the discipline of training, learning teamwork, following the leadership of coaches and captains, learning to lose—provide lifelong skills for athlete. If Redlands students can take one of these facets away as a result of playing sport this year then score lines, wins and losses, become irrelevant.

Whether your child received an award or not at our assembly there is a definite need to realise that if they put 100% into their efforts at Sport this year than that knowledge and recognition is far greater that the trophies that they saw in the hands of their classmate upon their return to the classroom.

For your viewing the same presentation can be viewed here. It is 20min in duration. 2021 Prizegiving

Redlands Ninja Course

On Saturday we had over 250 students register and attend our inaugural Redlands Ninja Course on Saturday. Students competed in their houses over two 20 min sessions to see how many times they could complete the course in that time.

Each point represents one student from that house who finished the course in the 40 min session which was sprint, prone hold, frisbee toss, crab walk, bowling, agility ladders with the large inflatables being stations #7 and #8. The giant wall was a highlight for these grades.

Overall winner was Roseby !!

Shrek the Musical 2022

Congratulations to all who auditioned for the Musical for 2022. The standard was incredibly high and we look forward to seeing our very talented company on stage next year. The Full Cast and Orchestra are listed here. The crew will be selected in Term 1 next year. Please note, the Company size (Cast, Crew and Orchestra) has been strictly limited due to COVID restrictions.

Friends of Drama AGM

Parents and Friends of Drama and Theatre are invited to attend the annual AGM on Thursday 25 November at 6 pm over Zoom. We will also be discussing the plans ahead for costuming our next exciting musical adventure, Shrek for 2022. Email tracyeveringham@gmail.com or drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au for the Zoom link if you would like to attend.

Gala Arts 2021

Filming Gala Arts last weekend was such a wonderful time for our performers. Whilst they performed live for the film and production crew only, the nerves and anticipation were still electric! Sadly their Yr 12 2021 peers were not able to be present due to final examination commitments however the camaraderie amongst the performers was incredibly strong.

Using the various Performing Arts venues across the Senior Campus, the event was filmed using current COVID safety regulations and will be edited for release at the end of the year. This will be a  wonderful celebration of the Arts and House spirit at Redlands in what has become a highlight in the Redlands calendar. We hope you enjoy a pictorial sneak peek of the performances above.

Staff News

This week we farewell the wonderful Ms Sarah Sparke as she begins her maternity leave and prepares for the birth of her second child later this year. We wish her all the very best in the new journey with her growing family. In 2022 Ms Jessica Tripp will be joining us for 12 months. Jessica has been teaching in London at various schools and academies since 2016. Prior to that, she worked for a number of Sydney Performing Arts Schools. Jessica is passionate about Music Theatre and was recently in a London production of Shrek.

Enrolments for 2022

Classes for 2022 are filling fast and there are already waiting lists for some classes. Anyone interested in joining us for 2022 should complete enrolment forms available from the Drama and Theatre office via email at drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Students discontinuing courses must notify the Drama Office at drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au before the end of term.

Music

It’s all happening from Prep to Yr 12 with projects across the school! On the Senior Campus, Yr 7 are taking a musical trip around the world; Yr 8 are creating their own subject fusions ‘Music & [Other Favourite Subject]’ to make their own research / performing / composition unit; Yr 9 are exploring Australian Film Music by making and underscoring their own short films; and Yr 10 are taking a deep dive into an area of passion with their exciting projects ready to share next week.

It’s also full steam ahead on our projects for Speech Day in under a fortnight! This year has required extra creativity and flexibility from students, teachers and tutors alike as we have worked diligently and safely to navigate the many restrictions on music-making in the school context. Just the same, as we near the finish line of the year, we have so much to be thankful for.

Redlands House, Prep and Junior School projects were directed by Ms Moses, and we thank all the young musicians who bravely filmed themselves singing and playing at home to add to the footage. You can look forward to seeing your contribution on the big screen at Speech Day! The Secondary School filming day was highly successful, and we’re now finishing collating footage and audio recordings from students at home to supplement the footage captured on our day.

Band and Strings have all made wonderful contributions using the Choir Creator app, though Senior Choir is still needing a few more members to be brave and add their voice!

A reduced part and tutorial video has been created and the revised process will now take no more than 10 minutes from start to finish!

We know some keen Choir members may have missed the messages on iLearn because of the year’s disruption.  We’d hate for them to miss out. If parents would like to encourage their children to contribute in this way (you can see them on the screen for Speech Day!) please forward them this link!

Senior Instrumental Competition 2021 – Revised for Online Context

This coming week, our finalists in our Senior Instrumental Competition 2021 will provide video performances via our iLearn page up until the 23 November, to be adjudicated remotely by our guest adjudicator, Brian Castles-Onion AM. Competitors are encouraged to reach out to the Senior Music office with any questions, and communicate directly with their assigned accompanists to navigate any challenges they may encounter.

Dreaming for our New Year

As always, we are looking for ways to strengthen our Home and Music Department connection, and are working for some simpler policies and procedures in 2022 and beyond – from enrolling to hiring lockers. We look forward to guiding you through our new simplified procedures in the new year.

Everything is crossed for a ‘return to better-than-normal’ in the Music department from January.

Enjoy your last full week of term and reach out if you have any further questions.
