Issue 35 2022 Term 4 Week 6 - 17 Nov 2022

From The Principal

Earlier this week all of our Yr 7 students were involved in a STEAM challenge in which they had to address the future of transport and attempt to solve real world problems such as road congestion, fuel alternatives, sustainability, health/safety, environment and ethics. My thanks to Secondary School eLearning Coordinator, Wendy Duckworth, our Yr 7 Tutors and all involved for making it such a positive learning experience. We now look forward to the Yr 8 STEAM program next week.

The Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy is celebrating the achievements of our students through a number of performances this week, starting with our younger performers last night and further concerts this evening and on Friday evening. It is wonderful to note so many students thriving in the program, under Gilly Revie’s outstanding leadership and I am looking forward to attending on Friday to enjoy the showcase at The Concourse.

The 1st Boys and 1st Girls Rowing crews are travelling to Melbourne this weekend for the Head of River Regatta, which will no doubt be a memorable experience. We wish them well in the competition and for the rest of the 2022-2023 season.

Congratulations to Lucy Horton on her selection to participate in the NSW Constitutional Convention at NSW Parliament House on Tuesday 29 November. This is an exceptional achievement and is a reflection on Lucy’s dedicated participation and leadership in debating and public speaking at Redlands.

New Redlands Website

Further to the developments in our digital footprint with Redlands Pulse and the Redlands App this year, we are delighted to advise that our new Redlands website will go live mid-next week.

Our new website employs leading innovations in user experience and design, a clean and contemporary look, a stronger use of imagery and videography and a move towards single-page exposure.

  • Banner Videos on the Home page and pages for each school section
(Please click on the sound icon for the full video experience)
  • YouTour Virtual Tour Videos for each school section
  • Meet our Teachers Video on the Home Page

Our new website does a wonderful job in communicating the essence of Redlands and I thank all the staff involved in its development and implementation.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome parents, grandparents, students and carers onto the Senior Campus late last week for our Secondary School Open morning. Students from Year 9, supported by our leadership team, hosted small group tours answering questions and providing a wonderful insight into life at Redlands for our guests.

We were also delighted to host more than a hundred of our Alumni community (our Redlanders) back onsite late last week where School memories and reconnections were shared and celebrated by those attending 20 and 40 year reunions. Our alumni of Redlanders can be found locally and globally. We continue to ensure the important connections with our community are nurtured and developed through Redlands dedicated alumni engagement program that includes interstate and international reunions and networking opportunities and a quarterly newsletter. We greatly value the relationships we build with our Alumni and our aim is to support a lifelong connection to the School.  For more information on our reunions, including a spotlight on an award winning Redlander, check out the Foundation section in today’s Note Day.

Further to the developments in our digital footprint with Redlands Pulse and the Redlands App this year, we are delighted to advise that the new Redlands website will go live early next week. Our new website employs leading innovations in user experience and design, a clean and contemporary look, a stronger use of imagery and videography and a move towards single-page exposure. We hope you like it and welcome any feedback.

A reminder that the North Sydney Community Awards remain open, providing the perfect opportunity to acknowledge local people who make a difference in our community and the North Sydney LGA. Award categories include Community Builder, Next generation, Eco Warrior, Trailblazer and Living Legend. Nominations close on 10 December and further information on these awards can be found on the North Sydney Council website here.

Our motto, ‘Let your light shine’, is a phrase taken from The Sermon on the Mount, ‘Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven’ (Matthew 5:16 NIV). At Redlands we aim to provide extensive opportunities to enable each student’s light to shine and to foster the light in those around them, and those who need support.

The Redlands Parent Prayer Group (convened by Sally Swan) is holding an End of Term Prayer Gathering on Wednesday 23 November from 6.30-7.30pm in the Armstrong Room at St Peters Cremorne. All parents are warmly invited to join for a time of prayer and thanksgiving. The evening will provide the opportunity to join with the Principal and the new Secondary School Chaplain as we express gratitude for the faithful service of Stephen Webber at Redlands.

‘Let your light shine’ is an ethos we carry in all our endeavours and I remain grateful for the guidance and support that our community so generously continue to provide. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Reunions

Redlands Hall came alive on Friday night with the excited buzz of more than 100 Redlanders sharing memories and reconnecting as we celebrated the 40 year reunions for the Classes of 1980, 1981 and 1982 and the 20 year reunions for the Classes of 2000, 2001 and 2002.

It was fascinating to hear from Doug Garske (RL 1982) who was one of the first two male students to graduate from Redlands. Jennie Cadman (RL 2000), also a current parent, shared her reflections:

“What has been the constant over the last 20 years is the strong community that Redlands has. And you are all a part of that community. I know if I reached out to another Redlander even from a different Year Group, that there would a connection. An understanding. A desire to help, if needed. A level of trust. And that is what I love about Redlands.”

As part of this celebration, we offered to our guests a tour around the Redlands Learning Hub. Everyone was very impressed with the new learning and teaching spaces and we heard endlessly how they would have wished to be students today. Liggins Quad also generated some interesting reflections – the position of the school bell as well as the renovation of the Science block.

The last station was the Fahl garden (outdoor area in front of the Redlands Learning Hub) which always creates a very special atmosphere with lights in the background. Many group photos were taken with this impressive backdrop.

All this would not be possible without contributions of many generations. We are grateful for everyone’s support, past and present!

Head of Secondary School

Saturday was such a beautiful day – sunny and hot, and perfect weather for the Redlands Sailing Cup. Our students competed in a number of races in Pacers and Elliots down on Sydney Harbour. I was lucky enough to go out on the water and get up close to the action. I was so impressed by the students’ capacity to read the wind and the water and work collaboratively with each other. Even though some of them were tired after camp and the end of a long year, they enthusiastically explained all of the rules to me, and enjoyed each other’s company on and off the water. They were up against strong teams from Ascham, St Ignatius College, Riverview, St Aloysius, Wenona and Monte.

A Time for Giving

For most in our community, Christmas is a time for joy and celebration. But for many in Lismore, who lost homes and businesses in the recent flooding and are in the early stages of a costly disaster recovery, this holiday season will be one of hardship.

This term, we are calling on the generosity of our Redlands community to support the residents of Lismore. We are asking each student to donate a small Christmas gift to the Northern Rivers Children’s Services. We hope these donated gifts will bring joy to a number of families this Christmas season.

To support this cause, we are asking students to bring a new children’s gift to their Tutor class in Weeks 6 and 7. The students and our Chaplain put the tree up in the John Roberts Centre this morning and the gifts from the School to Lismore will be placed in this area as a visible sign of giving and service to others.

Yr 10 Orientation Day 3

On Monday, Yr 10 attended Phase 3 of their orientation into senior studies. Mr Castelli, Head of Learning Analytics, started the session with a presentation on the key to success. Based on extensive analysis of the past 6 cohorts, Mr Castelli outlined the importance of having a holistic strategy that statistically enhances ATAR, references, university offers and interest from recruitment agencies.

Ms Benjamin, Dean of HSC and Mr Taylor, Dean of IB took the students through preparing for Yr 11; the session covered key attributes and attitudes that make a successful learner as well as establishing the high expectations we have of our senior students, but also the high support that we have in place for them. The students were introduced to study timetables and key study skills to help them to prepare for the step up to Yr 11. They were given time to reflect and set goals for the coming year. Ms Benjamin and Mr Taylor were supported by new Yr 12 students from both pathways, who did an excellent job sharing their reflections on what they wished they’d known this time last year, as well as advice for a new Yr 11 student. Yr 12 supported our new Yr 11 students in the activities during the session and it was great to see them working together so positively.

Yr 7-9 Assembly (SL) Launch of Fall Forward

After lots of difficult decision making, the 2023 Yr 12 Student Leadership Team have decided that ‘Fall Forward’ will be the slogan by which they lead the school. Inspired by a motivational speech by Denzel Washington, the leadership team aims to interpret ‘Fall Forward’ in their own way – striving to shift the narrative of disappointment or setbacks, shining a positive light on failure.

Their goal is to bolster Redlands’ inclusivity, promoting an environment where students feel comfortable to fall in their endeavours, knowing they have the support of their community. Celebrating that every failed experiment is one step closer to success. To share with the Secondary School, the leadership team collated a video which explored community experiences of falling forward.

Thank you to Oliver Noakes and Alex Tully for their efforts in editing this video.

Cocurricular Offerings 2023

We are in the process of updating our cocurricular offering for 2023, particularly the lunchtime clubs. We currently offer a wide range of clubs which extend curriculum subjects (such as in Science, Languages and Technology) or provide a unique experience beyond curriculum subjects (such as Knitting, Ethics, Model UN or Public Speaking).

We want all our activities outside of the classroom to be of high value. They should: allow students to demonstrate growth; provide opportunities to develop a unique talent or interest; allow them to take risks and be adventurous; to experience joy; and to foster a sense of belonging.

We ask staff to work with students to be inclusive, to create and support positive experiences, to provide genuine opportunities for accomplishment, and to help support student-led initiatives.

If you have any feedback or questions about lunchtime clubs or any of our other cocurricular activities, please contact Jonathan Gray, Dean of Activities (jgray@redlands.nsw.edu.au) who will be happy to hear from you.

Yr 7 STEAM

The Yr 7 STEAM Challenge for 2022 explored the Future of Innovative Transport. The challenge started with a guest speaker – Ms Mandi Mees (Head of National Rail Skills and Reform Design – National Transport Commission). Ms Mees talked to the students about transport issues such as equity, digitisation, accessibility and decarbonisation. This challenged the students to then identify, define, research, ideate, create and present their solution in the form of a prototype, model, app etc.

I saw them early on Day 1 of the Challenge, after the guest speaker Ms Mandi Mees had met with them and they were brainstorming ideas for their driving question, supported by Yr 12 student volunteers. There was a lot of energy and exciting ideas.

Then late on Day 2 of the Challenge, I was invited to judge the finalists, along with Member for Parliament, Ms Zali Staggall, Ms Mees and our 2023 Environment Captains, Marina and Matt. It was a challenging situation as all four of the final presentations were strong. They all met the brief, applied technological innovation, and offered engaging presentations. The Yr 7 audience were excited for their House group peers and cheered them on, ending the two-day challenge on a high in Redlands Hall. There were two winners in the end – we just couldn’t decide! We rewarded scientific contributions and persuasive presentations, but all students should feel proud of their collaborative achievements.

A sincere thank you to Ms Wendy Duckworth and the teachers and tutors involved. They spent two huge days with Yr 7 and spent significant time planning the engaging event.

The winning teams were:

Dumolo Red
Amelie Beeton
Rowan Petersen
Eva Simpson
Isla Anderson
Byron Mills

Cowper Blue
Eva Blundell
Elodie Melvin
Sophia Preece
Tully Sloot

Yr 7 Robert Smith’s Reflections on the Steam Challenge

2022 STEAM Day involved engaging entrepreneurial thinking to create a sustainable product that could be used to revolutionise transport. The many groups throughout Yr 7 designed unique and creative products and then competed against each other until four finalists were selected. Even though my group wasn’t a part of the finals, watching how the other teams’ creations worked was fun and exciting. Ms Mees, a transport innovation leader, began the two days of STEAM with a speech about how effective transportation benefits society. After this we split up into our Tutor groups, where the Yr 12 students presented their STEAM products. Following this, students were invited to brainstorm possible solutions to current transportation issues. Tuesday involved the process of bringing our ideas to life and creating a seamless slideshow on how our product would work, as well as a hand-made model of our design. We had to include both a brief overview of our idea and some FAQ’s and dilemmas with our product. After lunch, the four selected teams came together in the hall where our judges (Ms Van de Peer, Zali Steggall and our two environment captains) decided on the winning teams; Cowper and Dumolo were the victors, presenting a turbine powered ferry and a magnetic hovering car. Overall, it was a very fun and successful experience and I can’t wait to participate again next year.

COVID-19

With the increase in positive COVID-19 cases in Sydney and the wider community, please be reminded of the key points from Mr Corcoran’s letter of 17 October to the Redlands community as outlined below.

  • students and staff must notify the school of a positive COVID-19 test in the same manner as before
  • while self-isolation is no longer mandatory, students and staff should only return to school if they no longer have any acute symptoms (sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath)
  • once their symptoms subside, students and staff must wear a mask in indoor settings on campus for 3 days after they return to school
  • if any students or staff members are household contacts of a positive COVID-19 case who is unwell at their home, they should also wear a mask in indoor settings at school while that person continues to have acute symptoms.

Thank you again for your continued support of the health and wellbeing of our school community noting the continued importance of keeping students at home if they are unwell.

Student Achievement

Well done to Lucy Horton who has been selected to participate in the NSW Constitutional Convention at NSW Parliament House. Lucy had to write a one-page statement on the following: The appointment, removal and accountability of Ministers is based as much on convention as law.  How can we ensure that Ministers are truly accountable to Parliament and the people, and should we move away from convention to strict legal requirements? Lucy’s one page statement really impressed the judging panel; hence her selection for the convention.

Well done to the Yr 12 Dream STEAM team!

Phase 3: Preparing for Yr 11 and Senior Studies

Yr 10 returned from Camp this week to complete their final phase of their Senior School Orientation.  This session included iGrow Session 2 by Ben Castelli, Head of Learning Analytics, and a workshop on Senior Study Skills led by Darren Taylor, Dean of IB, and Lucy Benjamin, Dean of HSC.

Yr 10 were able to identify what iGrow data says about our past Yr 11 and 12 students, that our highest achieving students were found to connect with Redlands Careers Advisors early and often. They were also provided time to reflect on their own personal development, their social-emotional learning to date and key areas to focus on in preparation for the next two years. Key study skills for success were shared with students and will be referred back to on an ongoing period. Students now have many key ingredients in their possession to reach their full potential.  They are encouraged to use these last few weeks of term to try some strategies that may best work for them before starting Yr 11.

Peer Support Training

This week, students engaged in Peer Support Training led by Yr 12 Peer Support Leaders and the Heads of House. Yr 10 were provided an overview of the program and then jumped in to have a chance at leading various activities with a group of peers, practicing for leading Yr 7 students. Yr 10 participants were asked to channel their inner Yr 7 self and act in character to get a true sense of what the job would entail.  Yr 10 rose to this challenge and enjoyed two periods of having a chance at the games and activities themselves.

Students were asked to submit their application and express their interest in being a Peer Support Leader at the end of the session this week.  For further information and for those students absent from training this week, students are asked to submit their interest following the announcement on the Yr 10 Pastoral Page and further information will be sent out for a make-up option.

Yr 10 Camp

It was an opportunity for our cohort to escape the city and thrive in the wilderness. Whether we were hiking obscene lengths from campsite to campsite, fighting to stay afloat in canoes or chilling by the fire while the sun set, we generated some extraordinary memories. I remember most fondly the last night of camp and our impromptu party to celebrate our leader’s last trip with OEG.” – Ruby Voyce

” I must admit the theme of our Redlands Yr 10 2022 camp, ‘Challenge’, was very fitting. One day the Year Group was enjoying our Harbour Cruise all dressed up and sipping mocktails…and two days later we were fighting 30 knot headwinds on a gritty 11-hour canoeing journey. I can’t say I’ve ever experienced that fast of a life flip before, but it was refreshing and rejuvenating. Something we all haven’t experienced for a long time is the opportunity to be completely submerged in the beauty of nature without our technology. We were told at the beginning, the mindset you bring to camp will determine what you get out of it, so I made it my personal goal to look up and out, something I found myself doing less and less frequently with my phone around. ” – Tara Gold

Lismore Christmas Appeal

For most in our community, Christmas is a time for joy and celebration. But for many in Lismore, who lost homes and businesses in the recent flooding and are in the early stages of a costly disaster recovery, this holiday season will be one of hardship.

This term, we are calling on the generosity of our Redlands community to support the residents of Lismore. We are asking each student to donate a small Christmas gift to the Northern Rivers Children’s Services. We hope these donated gifts will bring joy to a number of families this Christmas season.

To support this cause, please have your child bring a new children’s gift to their Tutor class on Monday, 21 November.

Service Learning Project reflections

Throughout Terms 3 and 4, Yr 9 students have actively engaged with researching and organising charity drives for local charities and Service Learning opportunities. Student efforts culminated in an offsite 1-day Service Learning program supporting their chosen charity. Travelling from Manly to Paddington, students engaged in environmental clean-ups, connected with the elderly, cooked meals for the homeless and families in crisis, and connected with younger students from our Junior School.

The day concluded with Yr 9 writing Christmas letters to the residents of Bougainvillea, creating toiletries packs for the homeless, packing suitcases for children in need, folding clothes for women who are unemployed and looking for employment, and packing food hampers.

Key charities supported include Dress for Success, Share the Dignity, Hope in a Suitcase and St Vincent de Paul. Students loved the opportunity for leadership development in the service space, and they are to be congratulated on their fine efforts with this project.

One thing I ask of you; Never be afraid of giving. There is a deep joy in giving, since what we receive is much more than what we give.

Mother Teresa.

The Elderly

This week, Yr 9 had the privilege of engaging in several service activities in our community. Divided into groups, we developed several ideas on how to assist elderly citizens in our local area. It was evident that these people had been affected by COVID-19 and we analysed local demographics to formulate what could be done to assist. We developed ideas in these groups, and concluded on visiting Bougainvillea, a nearby retirement home. At Bougainvillea, we were absorbed in conversation with many of the residents, discussing their passions, pasts, and daily lives, with occasional riddles being passed. The smiles on their faces enlightened us, and as we conversed, we discovered mutual passions, stories, and adventures between us. We truly found a connection and bond within the people we talked to. We are all appreciative for the amazing advice they provided for our futures, and methods to tackling future endeavours. The many weeks of planning were supported by members of the group, and group coordinator, Ms Riley.

Families in Crisis and The Homeless

Part of the Yr 9 cohort made our way to Paddington to partake in Kids Giving Back – Cook for Good as part of our Service initiative for this year. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience as I felt proud of giving back to the community and I thought it was a great way to engage in an activity that allowed us to make a difference. By the end of the morning, we were able to make over 200 meals ranging from veggie pasta to fruit kebabs. Overall, I found it a motivating and positive experience that I thoroughly recommend for anyone looking to participate in giving back.

Alicia Green

Service Day was an incredible opportunity for all of my peers and I felt many people were able to take emotional, physical, and physiological learning away from it. Some people learnt a new skill in cooking, others, including myself, learnt about homelessness and expanding our knowledge past basic stereotypes. I also found that my emotional connection and empathy with homeless people expanded as we learnt that the lady who helped organize this event for us used to be homeless and she told us her story and told us that when people did things like this, she really appreciated it when this was her reality.

Clara Blackstock

Environmental Conservation

My group’s focus was the environment, and we went to Collins Flat to collect rubbish from the beaches. We split into smaller groups of 2-4 and went to collect around the beach. It was disappointing to see how much we found in our little time there, but it felt rewarding to do our part. After collecting, we sorted the rubbish into categories like glass, bottle caps, plastic straws, and other recyclables. While sorting, I took note of the amount of rubbish we made as a group in our time there, things like the little plastic tags from the gloves we used, or the plastic labels on our buckets. It was confronting to see the inevitability of making trash wherever you go, even when you are trying to prevent it. We then went to dispose of the rubbish at some nearby bins, then went onto having our morning tea in the park. We caught the bus back to school and had a lunch break as we caught up with other groups, some helped at the Junior School, some helped at Bougainvillea, and some made food for the homeless, it felt odd that we were the only group that did not do something in the humanitarian aspect of service, their feats of service felt more grand than ours, and it reminded me that anyone anywhere can pick up litter. It doesn’t need to be organised or part of a service day. After lunch we proceeded into the Learning Hub to make packages for people less fortunate than us. We donated packs of toiletries, suitcases with supplies (clothing, books etc) and sanitary items. We also wrote letters to the people at Bougainvilla. I worked on the toiletries packages, and while I know that we have only made a small dint in what needs to be done, I feel our part was done with care and love. I enjoyed putting together the packages as it allowed me to think of how my service would help the recipient. It made me reflect on my own privilege, to go to such a nice school like Redlands and be able to be the one helping people, and not the one in need of help. Overall, the day was rewarding and insightful, I enjoyed the opportunity to learn in a non-traditional way through this day of service.

Megan Kirkpatrick

Children and Young People

Our entire Yr 9 cohort had the amazing opportunity to take part in a Service project this Term 4. In this project, our entire year was lucky enough to go out, whether it be in the world, or in school, to have the opportunity to help people. My group was tasked with helping children. Our group went to the Junior School to help Yrs 3–6 teachers as non-teaching assistants. I think this was very beneficial not only for the teachers and children, but also for me, who gained a special sense of empathy for teachers who must deal with children, who at times can be a lot to deal with. It was an extremely fun and beneficial experience that helped me gain a lot of knowledge into what it is like to teach children, and I hope that what my group and I have done, has been helpful for those teachers and students.

14th House Poetry Recital

On Tuesday, we were thrilled to enjoy our 14th Annual House Poetry Recital, an inspiring and engaging event for students, teachers and families. This term, every Junior School student has been immersed in poetry having read, written, appreciated and presented poems. With one representative selected from each Junior School class, the rest of the school enjoyed a memorable afternoon with our performers showing poise, charisma and confidence as they delivered their respective poems to the audience of students, teachers and their family.

We were particularly delighted and honoured to have the Chair of the Redlands Board of Directors, Ms Glenda McLoughlin, join us on this occasion. From a recent conversation when Ms McLoughlin shared how she had rekindled her love of poetry during the last lockdown, the invitation to join us and share a poem herself was one that she needed no second invitation.

As well as Ms McLoughlin, the audience also enjoyed poems delivered by Señora Colagiuri, Mrs Robinson, Mr Watkins and Mrs Henery. Congratulations to all of the students for their involvement this term and in particular the students listed below who performed so marvellously.

Junior School Wellbeing Day of Activities – Friday 18 November

Tomorrow, our Junior School students will enjoy a day of wellbeing activities and fundraising that will focus on the wellbeing of our students, teachers and our wider community.

To support this, we have partnered with Bear Cottage, a children’s hospital in Manly with whom Redlands has had a long connection with and will be fundraising for Bear Cottage.

As well as a number of fun activities that the students will be involved in, we will also be raising money through a variety of fun stalls and games at lunch time. We will also host an optional sausage sizzle for students.

Bear Cottage merchandise will also be available for sale as per the flyer if your child would like to purchase any of the merchandise.

What do students need to know or bring on the day?

  • Plenty of gold coins for lunchtime stalls and activities
  • Lunchtime stalls will include ice-cream cones, fruit kebabs, chalk art drawing and Bear Cottage merchandise for sale
  • $2 for an optional sausage sizzle which will be run by some of our class parents
  • Zac Fowler (Yr 6) will also be raffling a Taronga Zoo Family Pass for 4 x people valued at $152, which the zoo has kindly supported this day with.
  • Zooper Doopers will also be available for those students who are dairy or gluten free.
  • All students should wear PE uniform on the day
  • Please note that if your child has allergies or is gluten free, they will be able to use their coins on non-food related activities.

We look forward to a fun Wellbeing Day!

COVID-19 Reminder

Student Recognition – Kids Giving Back

I was proud to receive an email from Gabrielle Morrisey Hansen, CEO of the organisation Kids Giving Back, sharing how a number of our Junior School students and their families spent time volunteering during Term 3 of this year and the last school holidays.

Kids Giving Back is a charity whose mission is to create the next generation of generosity through meaningful, hands-on experiences for young people to give back to others. Through charity partners, they arrange opportunities for children aged 6-18 years old and their families to help and support for people experiencing food scarcity or hardship.

These students were among close to 500 young people who produced over 7,500 hot meals, cold meals, fruit kebabs, breakfast boxes, snack packs and care packs which all included empathetic, positive messages on each item. These were then distributed to 9 charities around Sydney.

We will duly acknowledge these students in assembly next week but I wanted to also do so through this wider community communication as well.

Cooper Willis (Yr 3), Thomas Bentley, Harrison Joseph, Aimee Kang and Mackenzie Willis (all Yr 6)

To hear of our Redlands students embracing the concept of contributing back into the community is heart-warming and a wonderful example of our students living our School Values whilst making a difference to the lives of others.

Uniform Responsibility

The issue of lost property continues to be ongoing for many and whilst we are doing what we can to repatriate items of clothing, lunch boxes and drink bottles, I am asking parents to support this message at home.

As we have also asked the students to have a hat on outside, we have found students who have taken other people’s hats from lost property or elsewhere which is unacceptable. Again, parents are asked to ensure that the clothing your child wears is both labelled and theirs and I appreciate your support in this matter.

2023 Junior School Student Class Placements

Class teachers will begin to undertake the process of class formations for 2023 towards the end of this term once we have finalised the composition and balance of each year group team of teachers. Past experience has shown that the meticulous and professional approach we take ensures the optimum learning environment for each student.

Class placements are organised by the teaching staff who see and teach these students each and every day and hence, know the students best in the context of the classroom learning environment, taking particular account of the following factors:

  • the individual learning, social and emotional needs of each child
  • knowledge of the different teaching styles of teachers in the next year group
  • friendships of students where this has a positive impact on their learning (students are also involved in this step)
  • ability levels to ensure an even spread of ability levels across each class
  • an aim to balance gender in each class, as best possible

Please understand that parents cannot request a specific teacher for your child as this would set a precedence that is neither sustainable nor equitable for all families. Please also note that younger siblings will not necessarily be placed with the same class teacher as older siblings as invariably, siblings can be very different in both their learning preference and their personal traits.

A significant amount of time, professional dialogue and thought goes into this important operational process to aim to match each individual student with the right teacher and peers and our Dean of Students, Counsellors and I also take part in this process with our additional knowledge of students.

Once Year Groups have finalised these, there will be a comprehensive face-to-face handover of knowledge between teaching staff before the start of Term 1, 2023, to ensure that teachers have as much information as possible ahead of next year. These class lists are then displayed on the first day of the new school year but we also have individual student timetables up on Redlands Pulse a day or two before the start of term so that parents have access to see who their child’s class teacher will be before the start of the 2023 academic year.

I hope this summary clarifies the detailed process that will take place later this term in this very important part of our preparation for 2023.

ISA Code of Conduct

As we move into round 2 of the Summer ISA Sporting Season, we would like to draw your attention to the ISA Code of Conduct for both Players and Spectators. The full document is available on the Secondary School Sport page of Redlands Pulse and we encourage all parents and players to familiarise themselves with the expectations when participating in participating in ISA Sporting competitions.

GUIDELINES FOR PLAYERS

2.1       Once committed to a sport for the season, players must honour that commitment wholeheartedly. This same commitment applies to ISA representation. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

2.2       Players are expected to be modest in success and generous in defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion.  (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.3       Players are also expected to acknowledge, willingly and openly, good play by either school. Players should not celebrate the opposition’s mistakes. (Level of breach: 1)

2.4       Players should be positive in their approach to games and should adhere strictly to the rules/laws and spirit of the game.  The referee or umpire’s decision is final, and the Captain of the team is the only one who may ask for clarification of a decision at the appropriate time. (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.5       The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.6       Players shall never resort to violent or abusive language or behaviour or engage in unfair or illegal tactics to gain an advantage.  Racial vilification will not be tolerated under any circumstances. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.7        Players should be punctual and adhere to their school’s dress code.  The home team – and in particular the Captain should welcome the visiting team and its Captain.  At the conclusion of the game acknowledgment and thanks should be given to referees, umpires, officials such as scorers/touch judges and the opposition. (Level of breach: 1)

GUIDELINES FOR SPECTATORS

3.1       Spectators must remember that this is “kids” school sport, let them have fun. It is not the World Cup.

3.2       Spectators are expected to be positive role models. They must behave respectfully and courteously towards players, coaches, match officials and other spectators. (Level of breach: 1, 2 and 3)

3.3       Spectators are not to approach or address game officials or any of the opposing players, spectators or staff.  If a spectator has a genuine concern, this needs to be presented to their own school official who will determine any action to be taken. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.4       Unless invited onto a field/court, spectators must never encroach onto the field/court. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.5       Barracking should be enthusiastic and positive, but not designed to heckle, denigrate or unsettle opponents.  For example, barracking during a free throw or a kick at goal and so forth is always bad sportsmanship.  (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.6       Sledging and negative comments are totally unacceptable. Good play by either team should be recognised by applause. (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.7       It is never right to express disapproval of a referee or umpire’s decision, irrespective of his/her age. The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.8       Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence, rough or illegal play.  (Level of breach 2 or 3)

3.9       Visitors to the grounds should co-operate fully with any regulations or requests made by the host school, such as car parking, seating, dressing rooms and the placing of spectators.  At all times visitors should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave.  (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.10      Alcohol is not to be consumed at ISA fixtures. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

Basketball

This Saturday our teams will be playing in Round 5 of the ISA competition. The fixtures for Saturday are available on the Redlands Pulse – Fixtures page, please check your game time carefully. A reminder that training session details and fixture details are available on your student calendar.

If you will be providing your own transport to the game this Saturday please email kseebohm@redlands.nsw.edu.au so that the coaches are not waiting for you at the bus on the weekend.

Students should bring plenty of food and water to take with them to their away games on Saturday. A reminder that students are only permitted to wear Redlands uniform for both training sessions and Saturday fixtures (this includes when travelling via bus). In the event of cooler weather students can wear their Redlands fleece or Redlands sport tracksuit.

A number of the 1st Girls and 1st Boys Basketball players played against the Year 5/6 Junior School team earlier this week. With a home court advantage and enthusiastic crowd for the JS team, a thrilling run late in the game saw the match end as a 40-40 draw. It was a fantastic way to promote cross-campus opportunities for our students. Thank you to all students and staff for getting involved!

Rowing

Last weekend saw our Year 7 & Year 8 rowers head to Canberra for their first regatta of the season. Students departed on Friday afternoon where they settled into the accommodation before a full day of racing on Saturday.

For the Year 7 students this was their first formal regatta, and they could put into practice what they have learnt to date while the majority of our Year 8 students have been itching for a regatta. Their growth and confidence increased with every race with almost every student across both year groups winning at least one medal.

Across both year groups Redlands won 15 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze medals, an outstanding result!

Meanwhile our Seniors were training at Mosman Rowing Club where our Senior oys had a combined training session with students from Balgowlah Boys rowing in coxless boats courtesy of Mosman Rowing Club, hopefully we will combine again soon to race together.

This weekend will see the entire program race at Penrith for the Rowing NSW Independent School Championships.

Tennis

With only one more round before the finals for NSTA, we would like to congratulate Redlands 1, 5, 12 and 14 who are currently first or second on the leaderboard and in contention for the playoffs. We encourage all players to give it their all this weekend as Round 5 will be the final chance at points! If any teams are curious about their standings, please contact the Tennis Administrator for the details. All teams will still play the following week, finals or not, and Development Squad will also continue until the end of the term. A further reminder to TNB players, your competition rounds will go into the holiday period so please make sure you are checking the roster and draw. Please remember that attendance to training and Saturday sessions is mandatory to ensure you are meeting Representative Sport requirements and you must email Ms Caitlin Wong to explain your absence should you miss out on a session. This is particularly important if you are looking to use Summer Tennis as a Duke of Edinburgh or CAS Activity.

Please contact Ms Caitlin Wong should you have any questions regarding Summer Tennis.

Sailing

Sailing Equipment Demo Morning

Redlands are lucky enough to have the generosity of Vaikobi to help the program out with sailing gear and supply a demo kit for all parents and sailors to look and feel at the kit. Redlands students will be given a discount and package deal for the Redlands sailing uniform, in which will be the same kit that some of the best sailors in the world use. For more information on the kit, please see the link below.

Locky will be at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron from 8:00 am in the youth room for all to come and have a look.

Redlands Cup

Redlands Sailing ran the sailing schools’ first interschool regatta of the season. In near-perfect sailing conditions, over 80 sailors from 12 schools competed in both Pacers and Elliot 7s, with entries from Wenona, Monte, Riverview, Ascham, St Aloysius & the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. The Royal Sydney Yacht squadron ran an organised regatta for all the sailors and got all the races needed to be completed. The day consisted of a round-robin series split into two groups, and the top sailors of each group then progressed to the finals. Ali Braden and Ruby Gasmus from Redlands finished on top of group A with four firsts. They moved into the gold fleet finals with Max Nicholson, Hugo Christy, Lucy Baird, and Cleophe Eliatamby in the pacers. It was a great finish for Ali and Ruby, who ended up 3rd after finishing with a 1,7,1 and just missed out on first.

In the Eliott 7s, Oliver Noakes and his team made it to the Gold Fleet finals and finished third overall. We want to thank all the Friends of Sailing group volunteers and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.

Fitness Centre

For all students using the Fitness Centre space please continue to be aware of the following changes to the use of the Redlands Fitness Centre. Students are not able to leave school grounds at the conclusion of their sessions. Students are required to change back into their school uniforms and prepare for 1st Period. To assist with this transition, the Fitness Centre will now be open from 6:30am – 7:55am with students able to join throughout the morning.

In addition, there will now be a High Performance Session targeted towards both a Girls and Boys Basketball 1st. These sessions will be focused on speed and flexibility as well as rehab and injury prevention. All 1st Basketball Girls and Boys are able to attend the session which will start promptly at 7:00am.

We have had brilliant numbers through the Fitness Centre over the past week with students from all Age-Groups utilizing the space across all morning sessions. The Fitness Centre is the perfect space for students to build strength, speed and flexibility, key components of all Rep. Sports at Redlands.

The Fitness Centre is an open and inclusive space for all Redlands athletes and, with sessions across all mornings, Monday to Friday, this is a space that can be used by all Age-Groups across the week.

Sessions start promptly at 6:30am and have sessions tailored towards athletes of any ability, size or skill.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

We will also shortly be announcing our Holiday Session Schedule which will run in the week prior to school returning in Term 1 2023. Students will be allowed to access the Fitness Centre across multiple sessions and train. Great preparation for both the Summer Sport Season as well as the Winter Sport Pre-Season.

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions or the Fitness Centre space as a whole.

Winter Rep Rugby Program

Please be aware that there will be a meeting for all students, Year 11s and Year 12 wishing to trial for the Redlands Rugby 1st XV next season.

The meeting will be held on Level 2 of the Redlands Learning Hub during lunchtime on Monday 21 November. This meeting will cover our Preseason Planning, expectations and also information about positional selections and details.

This will also be an opportunity for our 2023 Rugby Captain, William Pearson, to talk through the standards of the 1st XV and our goals for the 2023 ISA Season.

I look forward to catching up with all of you.

2023 Athletics Carnival

As you would be aware in 2023 our Athletics Carnival has been moved from Term 2 to Term 1 due to venues being unavailable due to World Cup being hosted in Sydney. In preparation for our Redlands Athletics Carnival we will be running Field Event Pre Trials for the following events;
Shot Put
Long Jump
High Jump

Students will undertake a unit of Athletics in their PE lesson in Term 1 2023 reinforcing what was taught this year in High, Shot, Long and Discus with the only difference being the finalists for the carnival are not selected in PE lessons as they were this year.

The exciting element about these pre trials is that by devoting specific time to these individual events students will have multiple attempts, but also have their 3 or 4 attempts measured on the day providing feedback.

If you would like your child to trial in the following field events you will have to register them. Once registrations close that is final, no late entries are accepted. Reminders for registration will come through Noteday, PE classes, class teachers and through Pulse.

Discus and Turbo Jav will be held on the day of the carnival and students can register in person on the day at this event using their entrant number.

You may enter 1 or all of these trials in your correct age group on the correct day.

Not everyone who attends these trials will progress through to the finals but you will earn colour house points for trialing regardless of result.

For age groups it is the age your child turns this calendar year (For example if you child turns 10 next year (2023) they will compete in the Under 10’s age group). The age group is determined by the year they turn in the year 2023.
