Senior Campus Update

We are pleased to announce that the rooftop of the Learning Hub is now available for school use moving forward. While students are not permitted to be in this space without supervision, teachers will be able to use this space for classes and other activities with their students. We are still awaiting full occupancy of the outdoor podium in front of the Learning Hub, and I know the students are looking forward to having this additional outdoor space available to them later this year. Finally, over the last few weeks of Term 4, Buildcorp will begin work on the next phase of their works which is building an access road along the western boundary of the school between Waters Rd and Military Rd. Like other major projects in recent years, we have aimed for as much of the construction work as possible to occur in the school holidays and most of this stage of the works will occur during the summer break. In addition, we have waited until HSC and IB Examinations, as well as Yr 7-10 Yearly Examinations, have finished before commencing these works. Please note, however, there might be some changed accessibility and impact along the western boundary of the Senior Campus over these last few weeks of the year as these works commence.

Staffing Update

We are excited to confirm some of the new pastoral leadership positions for 2021. The Yr 7 Year Advisor will be Mr Eddy Atkins and the Yr 7 Assistant Year Advisor will be Ms Lucienne Willis, while the Acting Yr 12 Assistant Year Advisor (while Mr Walker is taking on the Acting Yr 9 Year Advisor position until the middle of next year) is Ms Rachel Wilson.

Flexischools

As you have been made aware, we have commenced online ordering in the Senior Campus Canteen this year and we are strongly encouraging students to use this system for purchasing food in the Canteen for the remainder of this term.

From the beginning of Term 1 2021 we will be moving to a more complete pre-order system in the Secondary School. This will mean that if students want to purchase a hot or pre-prepared meal for Recess or Lunch, they will have to use the online purchasing system, Flexischools. While there will still be some snacks available for students to purchase in person at Recess and Lunch, the majority of meals will only be available for students to pre-order via Flexischools.

This arrangement will allow for:

  • a more extensive menu for students to choose from
  • certainty for students that meals will be available for them to pick up in the Canteen
  • less wastage of food in the Canteen

Many parents would be currently using this arrangement in the Junior School which has had positive feedback.

CANTEEN ORDERING – FLEXISCHOOLS

Parents and carers can create a Flexischools account for their family and link a credit card and student number to the account. Students can submit orders up until 8.30am to ensure they are available for them to pick up at Recess or Lunch. We would encourage all students and parents to create an account and start using Flexischools this term to ensure they are fully prepared for this change next year. More details regarding online Canteen ordering are available on Redlands Pulse

Yr 6 Connect and Chat

As part of our transition program for our incoming Yr 7 students in 2021, current students from Yrs 7 and 11, as well as key academic, pastoral and cocurricular staff, visited Yr 6 classes on Monday morning to “connect and chat” with our incoming Yr 7 students from the Junior School. It was wonderful to see and hear the excitement and curiosity of the Yr 6 students, and we attempted to best answer their many and varied questions. However, I was also struck by the positivity, enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of the Yr 7 and Yr 11 students as they shared their insights and experiences from Secondary School. We look forward to welcoming all of our incoming Yr 7 2021 students to the Secondary School for their Orientation Day on Wednesday 25 November.

NAIDOC Week

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is Always Was, Always Will Be and recognises that First Nations people who have occupied and cared for this country for over 65,000 years. To celebrate NAIDOC Week some of our new student leaders will be working with our Yr 7 students during Tutor period tomorrow sharing resources, information and reflections with them. A special acknowledgement to Julia Parker who has recorded an interview with Dr Dennis Foley, a Cammeraygal elder, to be shown during these sessions, as well.

Remembrance Day

As you are well aware, 11 November is a special day as we, as a nation, celebrate the armistice which signalled the end of World War I and remember those who have fought, served and sacrificed their lives for our country. Yesterday we commemorated Remembrance Day as a Secondary School community with a minute’s silence at 11.00am. Tutor Groups had special reflections during their Tutor periods and our Principal, Mr Webber, along with our School Captains, Piper and Theo, rang the Redlands School Bell in Liggins Courtyard to start and end the minute of silent reflection for students in the playground.

From the Principal

It has been an emotional week for our Year 12 students as they have progressively come out of their final examinations and enjoyed that euphoric feeling of completion. I can still vividly remember walking out of my final Year 12 examination and the emotion shared with good friends. We are pleased that we have been able to organise a Formal this Friday evening, which will provide a fitting celebration of what has been a challenging year for the Year Group.

We are also looking forward to celebrating with the cohort at our Farewell Assembly at school and Valedictory Dinner at Luna Park next Wednesday 18 November. The Year 12 group have led the School with distinction this year and have demonstrated remarkable resilience and cohesion. It has been positive to note the very large number of early offers for university places that our students have received, with over 60 students having a confirmed offer at their choice of university, including 38 students at ANU.

The celebration of NAIDOC this week and the theme Always Was, Always Will Be encourages us to recognise that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years and that they are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and their cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land to sustainably provide for their future. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country – a history which dates back thousands of generations.

Whilst the impact of COVID-19 this year has meant that our Year 9 students have not been able to travel to Arnhem Land for their Indigenous cultural program, we have worked collaboratively and creatively with Culture College to develop a unique Midawarr program, that will be delivered to our Year 9 students on campus next week. The students will be linking, via technology, to Yolngu leaders on country in Arnhem Land as well as Culture College leaders here on campus. We are excited to be piloting this program with Culture College, which has the potential to support Yolngu people in their vision of expanding knowledge and understanding of their strong culture and connection to country.

Finally, congratulations to our Sailing team on their victory in the Redlands Cup last weekend, a fine performance, and all the best to our rowers who will be competing in the NSW Independent Schools Rowing Championships on Saturday.

Harvest Trail Experience for Yr 12 2020

The Harvest Trail Experience will provide school leavers with an amazing opportunity to participate in the annual cherry harvest experience in the picturesque Young Region and Central West commencing immediately after the HSC and going through to Christmas. The cohort will receive a full industry orientation and accredited induction training with support to make this a memorable experience with their peers. Opportunities are then ongoing across the entire state. Students can maximise their experience by continuing on the NSW Harvest Trail and working across a number of seasons, gaining further skills and qualifications for at least six months. This is a great opportunity for Yr 12 students to grab their friends, have an adventure and make up for some missed experiences. They will earn money, build life skills, gain experience and travel to parts of the country they may never have seen. Register here

ANU Virtual Presentation at Redlands

ANU will be presenting next Tuesday 17 November from 10.15-11.00am in the Library for interested Yrs 10 and 11 students. ANU now has their own application system and it opens in March every year and closes in May, so good to be prepared early. Please ask permission from your Tutor teacher to attend.

SAE Virtual Information Evening

To be held on Thursday 10 December from 6.00-8.00pm. If you are considering creative media, such as animation, audio, design, film or games then join in and hear from industry-experienced lecturers. Register here

Significant conversations with our parents are precious moments in our lives. I remember with joy the discussions on politics, religion and life I had with my father as a teenager. I found I stridently disagreed with this man that I loved yet I learnt a lot about life, respect and listening. In our world of fast life, mobile devices and Netflix, the space for significant conversations can be squeezed out.

Thank you to all those parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who were willing to have a conversation with our Yr 9 students for their Christian Studies Assessment. Although they may not have told you, they appreciated the discussions and reflected upon them well. Many students have a better understanding of family history and the challenges that people face in life. As the staff read the reflections, it has become clear that most of the students have come to a deeper understanding and respect for the person they interviewed. The rich experience of life is a valuable gift that our students were fortunate to have been given.

Proverbs in the first chapter say this:

‘My child, listen when your father corrects you.
    Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.

What you learn from them will crown you with grace
and be a chain of honour around your neck.’

This verse is one that holds some profound wisdom in our era where elders are often not valued. It encourages us to make time to genuinely share, reflect, listen and be open with our young people.

This open sharing is an important part of our nation-building, as well. Many Indigenous people talk of truth-telling. This is sharing the personal histories where there has been injustice, tragedy and difficulties. Having significant conversations with our Indigenous peoples is a rare and important thing. Thankfully, our Yr 9 have a wonderful opportunity to have time with Indigenous peoples next week at the Midawarr program. This will be a great time of listening, learning and conversations that should lead to our students having a deeper appreciation for Indigenous culture and experience. While they did not have the planned time in Arnhem Land, this provides a space for parents to hear of the students’ learning, thinking and questions after each day of engagement. It would be great to make space for this.

Our commitment to our students to become 21st century citizens is embodied in these two learning opportunities for Yr 9 students.

Toys’n’Tucker

Term 4 is speeding past as we find ourselves in Week 5. Students are reminded to bring in grocery goods to support families in need. Through the partner organisation of Anglicare, the hampers are delivered to people of real need. Please bring in goods like long-life milk/custard, tinned salmon, ham, fruit and vegetables, packaged cakes, puddings and biscuits, pasta and pasta sauces. Please remember these need to be non-refrigerated items. Students can deliver the goods to Tutor Groups as soon as possible.

Service and Social Engagement

Matthew Talbot Christmas Collection

Yr 12 have traditionally had the rewarding opportunity to volunteer their time at the Matthew Talbot men’s shelter; however, COVID-19 restrictions have made it difficult for us to carry out this important face-to-face work. This Christmas, Yr 12 will be collecting funds to help support the shelter. These funds will be used to purchase and donate gifts that will surely bring a little happiness during this difficult time.

There is a special joy in giving back during the Christmas season and we encourage students to dig deep. Collections will take place during Tutor Time in Week 6. Funds can also be collected electronically using the details below:

Account Name: SCECGS Redlands Limited, ABN: 96 001 336 269
BSB: 032197, Account: 810408
Bank: Westpac Banking Corporation (Military Road, Neutral Bay, NSW 2089)

Toys ‘n Tucker

There’s no better way to share the joy of Christmas with people in need than through giving! This November, students across both the Junior and Senior Campuses will be supporting Anglicare’s Toys ’n Tucker Christmas appeal. Our Junior students will have the opportunity to purchase toys and our students in Yrs 7-9 will be collecting food items. Anglicare will take donated food and gifts and distribute hampers to thousands of families in our community who need assistance.

Yr 10 Dodgeball Competition for Headspace

Each year, Headspace helps thousands of young people access vital support through Headspace centres in 124 communities across Australia. From online and phone counselling services, vocational services, and presence in the school, Headspace can help young people with mental health, physical health, alcohol and other drug services to work and study support.

A group of incredible Yr 10 students will be hosting a schoolwide dodgeball competition in Week 7 (lunchtime) to raise funds for this great cause.

  • There will be a Junior competition (Yrs 7-9) and a Senior one (Yrs 10-12)
  • Everyone can sign up in teams of 7 through the Google form on the Service iLearn page)
  • On the day, student leaders will collect $5 from participating students.

Yearly Examination Success

Well done to all of Yr 9 for completing their Yearly Examinations. I was impressed with how our students handled their exams throughout a busy week of back to back exams. As mentioned in last week’s Note Day, please remind your child that there will be highs and lows when receiving their Yearly Exams back and that any mistakes made in their examinations should be seen as an opportunity for improvement.

A big thank you to Lisa Ole, Saralie Pincini and all the Parent Volunteers for looking after our Yr 9 students who needed special provisions throughout the week.

BurnBright

On Wednesday, Yr 9 participated in the BurnBright Incursion. The boys attended the ‘Ignite’ session and the girls attended the ‘Spark’ session before coming together as a cohort at the end of the day. Students enjoyed a range of sessions which focused on the following topics:

  • Building Genuine Relationships
  • What’s Holding You Back?
  • How A Mindset Can Decide The Future
  • Our Values And Our Foundations
  • We All Have A Story
  • The Power Of Words
  • Have A Goal
  • It’s Okay To Make Mistakes
  • Having Fun Along The Journey

It was so pleasing to see the maturity Yr 9 conveyed when participating in the many activities on the day and to see the cohort come together and talk so openly and honestly with each other. A key takeaway for Ms Martin and I was observing how our Yr 9 students positively interacted with each other outside of their friendship circles and removed all judgment of each other when undertaking the activities. Core values such as honesty and respect were highlighted by each student throughout the day.

Insights from our Yr 9 boys ‘Ignite’ session:
“One of the key messages I took away was don’t hold back, be brave and respect your friends.” Awanui Currie

“I have learnt that there are many things that keep us from doing what we really want. A positive mindset and attitude are all it takes.” Oscar Whatmough

“The line game activity allowed me to gain a better perspective of not just my morals but the other boys in the Year Group’s morals and overall I reckon that we have built a better connection with our friends and with the boys in our Year Group by attending the BurnBright day.” Patrick Walker

“The line game helped me understand the struggles that some of the boys in our year experience. I now know what I can do to support these boys.”  Sam Chubb

Insights from our Year 9 girls ‘Spark’ session:
“After the morning ‘Spark’ session, I felt a lot more connected and I feel like I now know a lot more about my peers around me. The biggest thing I took away is that you’re never alone; everyone goes through the same things and there’s always someone to talk to.” Maya Little

“The ‘Spark’ sessions provided a great opportunity to be true to yourself but also to find out more things about yourself and others; in particular, how they are feeling and what they share and don’t share with others.”  Livia-Marie Feller

“Being a new student, ‘Spark’ gave me the chance to see the things that I have in common with other people. It made it so much easier for me to be able to go up and talk with people in the Year Group and connect with new people.”  Madeleine Boris

“It was so cool to learn that you can talk to people that you don’t always talk to.”  Lilly Attard

Midawarr Camp

Earlier this week, all Yr 9 parents were emailed information regarding next week’s exciting Midawarr Yr 9 Camp incursion from Tuesday 17 to Friday 20 November at the Redlands Senior Campus.

Below are some key reminders for the Yr 9 Midawarr camp:

  • On the first day of camp on Tuesday 17 November, students are required to arrive at school at the normal time.
  • Yr 9 students are to wear sports uniform for the duration of the camp.
  • Yr 9 students involved in the Music Ensemble Recording Project on Tuesday will be required to bring with them their full school uniform including school blazer to get changed into for the recording.
  • There will be no Music tuition lessons from Tuesday – Friday
  • On Wednesday and Friday, we are asking that students arrive by 7.50am if possible in order to provide an opportunity to reflect on the learning from the previous day and prepare for the day ahead.
  • On Thursday there will be an Art activity beginning at 7.20am which students are encouraged to attend.
  • Each day of the camp will end at 3.20pm, except Thursday, when students will attend their regular Summer Sport training.
  • All Sport training sessions will continue as normal throughout the week.
  • Students will have normal recess and lunch at school, including Canteen access.

The following equipment is needed for the camp:

  • Pens and pencils in a pencil case
  • A small round point paintbrush eg. from a discount store
  • A journal or notepad to write reflections
  • A bandanna, cloth or eye mask

It is hoped that the Midawarr camp will encourage students to learn about Australia’s Indigenous culture both through experience and thoughtful reflection. The Camp is sure to be a unique and memorable experience for the entire Yr 9 cohort.

Yr 7 Incursion

What an exciting day we had this week with our Yr 7 Burn Bright incursion.

It was wonderful for our students to build on their sense of connectedness with their peers and the school community. Through multiple interactive activities, students explored peer-to-peer relationships and the importance of finding and following what they were passionate about with those around them. With ‘friendships’ a focus, this enabled students to reflect on why these relationships were important and having your ‘team’ surrounding you, providing students with the skill set to navigate through their high school years. This was a wonderful day for our students, with lots of laughs and fun amongst the key messages required for age and stage.

2021 Student Exercise Books

As some parents would have noticed, from next year, the School will source a consistent set of School learning books for each subject as shown in the photo. The individual book packs will be delivered to us here and class teachers will pass them on to each student. The packs will cost between $16-$30, depending on the required books for each Year Group, and include transferable plastic covers. This one-off cost will be for all books for the whole academic year.

Yr 6 Legacy Fair – Friday 13 November

This Friday (tomorrow), our Yr 6 will host the annual Yr 6 Legacy Fair. This annual event has been a wonderful way in which the Yr 6 cohort combine to organise a range of fun activities for the rest of the Junior School to enjoy and monies raised help towards a legacy gift from the group to the Junior Campus. The main ideas that the students are considering are an indoor green feature wall in the atrium and a time capsule that they will fill with artefacts and information to capture the unique year of 2020 to be opened in 2050!

Due to current restrictions, the Fair will be run slightly differently with allocated times for each Year Group to attend but will still be an exciting morning for our Yr 6 students who take ownership of the organisation and running of stalls and activities.

It will also be a mufti day for a gold coin donation and all stalls and treats will require a gold coin donation too. To limit the handling of money, our preference is for gold coins rather than notes and students interested in taking part should bring between $5-$10 in gold coins.

Music Filming – Full School Uniform Required

In lieu of us not being able to have large-scale live music events on Speech Day, we are excited to be able to create some video footage for all families to enjoy.

As per the detailed letter sent out by our Music team, please be reminded of the following requirements for next week:

Monday 16 November:  All students to come in full school uniform (including blazers)

Wednesday 18 November*: All students to come in full school uniform (including blazers)

*As Wednesday is a Sports Day, all students will need to arrive at school in their full school uniform and bring sports kit to change into after filming.

Melanoma Awareness Day – Thursday 19 November

You may recall that back in February, I was pleased to share and promote the planned Melanoma March in Manly, an annual event to raise awareness and funds for Melanoma Institute Australia. Sadly, this event was not able to take place but we are excited to have our own Melanoma Awareness Day on campus next Thursday 19 November during National Skin Cancer Action Week.

Particularly in Australia and leading into the summer, the chance to reinforce sun safety in our school community is an important message as well as raise awareness about melanoma amongst the students and to raise money to support Melanoma Institute Australia.

On this day, students are asked to bring in a gold coin donation and to wear a ‘crazy hat’. There will be some merchandise on sale for students to buy on the day such as slap bands, UV wristbands and bandannas which will range between $1-$5 in price.

We will also have a sun cream (and zinc) stand for students to ‘slip slop slap’ at recess and lunch and hope the sun will shine down on us for the event.

New Student Orientation and ‘Move Up’ Day

Last Friday saw us welcome over 40 new students who will join the Junior School in 2021 as part of their process of orientation into Redlands. Our students welcomed their soon-to-be peers with warmth and friendship, as many of the new students commented to me in the final session we had with just them. All of them left having made a new friend or two which was wonderful too. As part of the day, we also moved Kindy to Yr 5 up a year to the Year Groups that they will be in next year. This allowed them some time with different teachers and begin to get a feel of new learning spaces and expectations. Students rotated around each classroom doing a series of fun activities and I know that this was also hugely beneficial for many of our students.

Yr 7 2021 ‘Connect and Chat’ Session

This week, our Yr 6 students found the time they spent with students from Yr 7 and Yr 11, along with Student Leaders from the Secondary School, of immense value as another aspect of the important transition to Secondary School. The Yr 6 students were able to ask any questions they had to students and staff and it was also wonderful to see many former Junior School students share their personal stories about what worked well for them in the transition and some top tips. I am grateful to Mrs Clinton (Dean of Students) and her Secondary School counterpart, Ms Jansons, for their planning of this opportunity and also thank a number of Secondary School leaders: Mr Webber (Principal), Mr Corcoran (Head of Secondary School), Mr Atkins (Yr 7 2021 Year Advisor), Mrs Willis (Yr 7 Assistant Yr Advisor), Mrs Rolon (Head of English), Mrs Pittard (Head of Maths), Mr Kindred (Head of Secondary School Sport) and Mrs Abe (Assistant Coordinator of Languages), for their time with the students.

Our students and staff marked Remembrance Day with respect and solemnity, an important date to reflect and recognise many who have served and died in conflict. I joined Class 6 Green at 11.00am for their service of remembrance and also appreciated the open discussion that the class has afterwards about war and the significance of this day in our history.

Connected to this, Yr 5 groups also enjoyed reflecting on Remembrance Day and linking it into a current study of poetry, using Harvard’s Project Zero thinking routine, See Think Wonder for poems about Remembrance Day before writing their own poems.

NAIDOC Week

During class this week, our students have spent time this week recognising and learning more about NAIDOC Week. This year’s theme, Always was, always will be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years, and First Nations people were Australia’s first engineers, farmers, scientists, diplomats and artists. Our Arnold Library provided our students and staff with a wealth of resources.

Some Year Groups were also able to make connections to the curriculum such as Yr 6 drawing upon the natural link with Indigenous history and their ‘Food and Fibre’ Unit of Inquiry. The Aboriginal seasonal calendars and the Aboriginal Astronomy lessons both have links to traditional Indigenous food sources and students utilised this information along with their industry of study.

Calendar Updates

Week 6 – Thursday 19 November –  Melanoma Day
Week 7 – Friday 27 November – Prep Picnic Day

NAIDOC Week

The NAIDOC theme Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.

In line with this theme, the Prep School have enjoyed many varied activities this week where they explored ways to celebrate the diversity of the Aboriginal and Torres Start Islanders. They read books, created new flags that represented their interpretation of country, developed their own Welcome to Country pieces and enjoyed sharing their understanding.

Move It Up Day

Last Friday, the Prep School participated, for the first time on the Junior Campus, in Move it Up day. Our learners moved up for a period of the day to their 2021 grade rooms. I must say that all our students, including our new 2021 Yrs 1 and 2 students, thoroughly enjoyed the experience and amazed the different staff members with their courage and enthusiasm. A lovely little taste for 2021!

Family Borrowing

A message from our Librarian Mrs Victoria Roberts

Thank you to all the parents who have continued to support the Lucy Hill Library this year. It is always a pleasure watching the children choose books that they want to read and share with you. It was also good to see that many of you completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge, kept up that family-reading habit and home-school partnership by requesting bags of books that were collected from the school foyer. Unfortunately, there is no borrowing over the summer school holidays and the time has come to return all Library books. The last day for borrowing will be Thursday 19 November and all books, yours and those of your children, are due back at school on Monday 23 November. I look forward to connecting with you all again in 2021.

Melanoma Awareness Day – Thursday 19 November

You may recall that back in February, we were pleased to share and promote the planned Melanoma March in Manly, an annual event to raise awareness and funds for Melanoma Institute Australia.

Basketball

Round 3 of Redlands Basketball was busy with 29 of our teams having home games. Our A Boys played against St Pius A Boys. The 14A Boys and 17A Boys both had great wins and are really starting to work well together on the court. A great fight from our other A teams showed that they can play with some of the top Division 1 schools. The B and C Boys teams both played against St Pius at NBISC and finished with four out of the five wins in the B line and a clean sweep for the C line who dominated on the day. The Redlands Open Blue and Open Gold teams played off against each other, with the gold team winning by 3 points in what was a great match-up. The 17Ds had a 16 point win over SACS and the 14D and 13D teams had a win and a loss respectively against St Augustine’s. The 14E and 14F teams both played hard but came up short against Oakhill and St Spyridon.

Again, there were some great results in the Girls competition, with the 1sts continuing their undefeated streak and having a massive win over the SACS 1sts. The 2nds were playing SACS 2nds and finished with a 13 point win. The Redlands 3 Girls also continued their undefeated streak with a huge win over Oakhill. The Redlands 4 girls lost by nine points in a hard-fought game. Redlands 5 had a fantastic win over Barker College, as did the Junior B Girls. The Junior As had a very tough match-up this week with the Barker Junior A side, the two teams traded basket for basket throughout the first half, however, in the second half Barker gained momentum and created a lead that was too big to get back. The Junior Cs had a close match up against SACS, but went down by two points at the final siren.

Sailing

Last Saturday our Sailing program hosted the Redlands Sailing Cup with teams from Redlands, Riverview, Cranbrook and Wenona in attendance. The regatta was held in both Pacer dinghies and Elliott 7s keelboats with 16 teams competing in both divisions.

Racing began in a light westerly breeze that quickly separated the two fleets and highlighted the teams’ tactical skills. With a reasonably long course, there were many opportunities for sailors to find different shifts to extend their leads or overtake competitors stuck in a lull.

In the Elliott 7s, Oliver Noakes and Alissa Braden skippered the two Redlands boats and quickly separated from the two Cranbrook teams after the slow pre-start. Oliver and his team capitalised on a shift on the right-hand side of the course and were able to lead the race from start to finish. Alissa’s team struggled on the first upwind to connect the different breeze patches, however, were able to quickly set an asymmetrical spinnaker at the top mark and catch up to Oliver’s team, finishing second.

In the Pacers, all six of our boats had good starts, however, three teams got stuck underneath the fleet and were forced in a lull on the left-hand side of the course. Jameson Prescott and Will Wickham quickly picked up on the shift and managed to tack into clean air on the right-hand side of the course and stay in touch with the leading Riverview boat around the first mark. On the first downwind, the breeze consolidated the fleet again and Jameson and Will managed to overtake the Riverview boat on the next upwind leg and ultimately won the race.

After the first race, the breeze became extremely light and the race committee had to postpone racing until the southerly breeze arrived. The following two races tested the sailor’s ability to perform in strong wind conditions and a reasonable sea-state with rolling waves across the course.

In the Elliott 7s, Alissa and her team kept calm in the windier conditions and were one of the fastest boats on the down-winds. Oliver Summons and his team also demonstrated their heavy-wind sailing skills, jumping on an Elliott 7s for the second race. Both teams had strong starts and initially led out to the left-hand side of the course, however, they were held out by the two Cranbrook teams and unable to find a wind shift to overtake them. In the third race, Oliver Noakes and his team switched back onto an Elliott 7 and quickly adjusted to the stronger breeze. The third race was the final race for the day and both Alissa and Oliver’s teams sailed extremely well in the conditions and had some great moments surfing waves on the downwinds.

In the Pacers, the nine teams initially struggled in the stronger breeze and rolling waves and the overall placing shuffled significantly during the final two races. In the second race, the Redlands sailors had a superb race, capitalising on their fast upwind speed and took 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th across the line. However, the third and final race of the day was the most interesting to watch with a reasonably even start and consistent but strong breeze across the entire course. On the first two legs of the race Jameson and Will, Gianni Watson and Alex Gibbs and Zac Nisbet and Dasha Sychova held onto the podium positions with two Riverview boats trying desperately to overtake our sailors. It was not until the final top mark and downwind that the Riverview boats were able to sneak through and overtake two of our teams whilst surfing down the front of the rolling waves on the course. Our top three teams placed 3rd, 5th and 6th in this race with only a few seconds between the first and sixth boat across the line.

Overall, Redlands placed first in both the Elliott 7s and Pacer divisions and won the Redlands Sailing Cup 2020 with the lowest combined score. A special congratulations to Jameson Prescott and Will Wickham who won the points score on count-back after being tied on six points with the winning Riverview boat. Congratulations also to Alissa Braden, Lucy Baird, Sienna Wessels, Cleophe Eliatamby and Thea Scown who placed second in the Elliott 7s division and were only one point behind the winning boat. All the sailors who competed at the regatta performed exceptionally well and have set the program up for success at the upcoming regattas in 2021.

Swimming

In Term 1 2021, Redlands will once again be offering a Swimming Squad program for all interested Secondary School students. The program will run for six weeks on Friday afternoon, ideally, students will attend all six sessions.

Please register here.

Tennis

Round 4 of the Summer NSTA Tennis competition was pleasing to see Redlands students show persistence within their matches with plenty of games across the day getting to deuce and plenty of sets being won or almost won after fighting back from a couple of games down. This is a quality that is important in a sport where there is an opportunity at every point to change the direction of the game, the set and the match. Tennis is played on such fine margins that it is often just a single point at a pivotal moment that determines the outcome of a match.

Just a friendly reminder, please aim to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled start time to ensure there is sufficient time for a warm-up and matches can start on time, 8.00am and 10.00am. If students are sick or injured and cannot attend training, please email Eliza Peirce. If students are sick and rostered to play on Saturday, please email Eliza Peirce before 12.00pm on the Friday to ensure a replacement can be found and all sets can be completed.

The COVID Safety Protocols for Tennis have not changed for Round 5. The one spectator rule at all NSTA Tennis venues remains in place. The Redlands COVID Sports Protocols can be found on Redlands Pulse. All wet weather updates can be found on Twitter @RedlandsSport.

Touch Football

We had another cracking day out at Macquarie University, with a number of teams walking away with some hard fought wins. Our 1sts, unfortunately, had a tough match against Barker 1sts, however looked very impressive throughout the second half. Our 2nd and 3rds played each other which is always a tough battle, with the 2nds taking the game 3-2. Our 4ths travelled out to St Paul’s Grammar School, looking to improve, and certainly gave SPGS a run for their money, going down in another close game 2-3. Our Junior As beat Barker 8-4 with the girls really looking strong for the back end of the Term 4 season. The Jnr Bs had a good win against St Pauls. The Junior C and Ds had a great turn out in their internal match, with both teams showing signs of improvement, and despite the loss, our Junior Es are learning a lot and enjoying each week they play.

Experience is not the best teacher. If it was then as everybody got older they would get better. I know a lot of people getting older but they’re not getting better. It’s not the experience that gets people better, it’s evaluating that experience. Reflection turns experience into insight!” John Maxwell

TERM 4 SUMMER SPORTS DRAW

Summer and Winter Representative Sport Photos

In an exciting new format for our team photos, we merged the Summer and Winter photos into one session. Thanks to the efforts and enthusiasm of the students we were able to complete all photos in 90 minutes for all grades. That is an incredible result for a total of 83 team photos and setups including all the extra photos. Four fleeces were left behind which can now be found in lost property.

The introduction of bar codes that every student received for their photo streamlined the whole process and as such, we received the photos back with names attached the same day. Parents can now view and purchase these online.
