Issue 35 2019 - 14 Nov 2019

From the Principal

A key focus on both the Senior and Junior Campuses for the past couple of weeks has been STEAM activities. This week has seen students in Years 8 and 9 working in teams on two separate STEAM projects. Year 8 students have been looking at the Great Barrier Reef and creating innovative ideas and solutions for the environmental issues faced by this World Heritage Site. The focus for Year 9 students has been energy sustainability, specifically evaluating the School’s energy usage and developing plans for the School to minimise its carbon footprint and reduce electricity consumption and costs. These STEAM projects follow on from the recent STEAM day undertaken by Year 4 students. Today Year 2 students participated in a Science incursion and tomorrow sees Year 5 students visiting the Senior Campus Science laboratories to gain hands on experience in a dissection, while Year 3 students will participate in a Kaleidoscope Science incursion.

I wish to congratulate the following five Year 12 students who have been nominated for SHAPE, the HSC Design and Technology showcase, for their major works: Mia Boys, Grace Elliot, Liam Hayford, Benjamin Kittle and Madeline McCormick. Well done to the students and to their teachers who have supported them throughout the year.

I also advise that our new branding has now been extended to our website and the updated website will go live mid next week.

Bushfire Appeal

Over the past week many individuals and communities have been affected by the devastating bushfires which have ravaged the state. People have been living in fear, homes have been destroyed and there has been the tragic loss of life. In response to these events, the Redlands community is coming together to raise money for the Red Cross Bushfire Relief and Recovery Appeal. In the Secondary School there will be a mufti day and lunchtime sausage sizzle tomorrow (Friday 15 November). Students wearing mufti will be expected to make a gold coin donation (or more) for this worthy cause and students will need to have cash to pay for a sausage and drink. Our thoughts and prayers go to all of those affected by these bushfires.

Optimism

At this week’s student led assembly, our two School Captains, Isabel and James, shared with the student body some of the new student leaders’ aims and goals for the upcoming year. One area they want to focus on this year is optimism, and at the assembly Isabel and James shared some of their own personal experiences about keeping a positive outlook even when faced with challenges or difficulties. I think this is a great message and focus area, not just for students, but for all us over the next year and I thank the student leaders for coming up with this worthy goal.

STEAM Week

This week the corridors, classrooms and playground have been abuzz with Yr 8 and Yr 9 students researching, experimenting, gathering data, discovering and dreaming questions and solutions as part of their respective STEAM projects. The focus area for Yr 8 is coral reefs. Students are exploring issues affecting the Great Barrier Reef and are coming up with possible solutions to help protect the reef. Yr 9 students have been engaging in an energy sustainability project, where they have been collecting data on the Secondary School’s energy usage and then, based on their findings, are developing a business proposal to present to the School about ways that Redlands can become more sustainable and reduce its electricity consumption and costs. It has been great observing the Yr 8 and Yr 9 students actively engaging in their respective projects this week and I look forward to hearing and seeing their final presentations over the next two days.

Congratulations

This week, we were informed by NESA that the following 2019 Yr 12 Design and Technology students have been nominated for possible inclusion in Shape 2019, the annual exhibition of a selection of exemplary Major Projects developed by HSC Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design:

  • Mia Boys
  • Grace Elliot
  • Liam Hayford
  • Benjamin Kittle
  • Madeline McCormick

This is a wonderful accomplishment for these students and I congratulate them on this honour. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the teachers who have spent considerable effort assisting students with their Major Works throughout Yr 12.

Urban Race and Balmoral Beach

Our Head of Outdoor Education, Mr David Gregory, together with OEG staff have arranged two days of exciting activities for our Yr 10 students. Students will attend initiative and team building activities at Balmoral Beach and engage in an urban challenge through The Rocks, Circular Quay and Botanical Gardens. Students were briefed yesterday and are aware of their groups as well as which day they will be attending these activities. Students will need mobile phones, sunscreen, hats and two litres of water in a small day pack. On the Balmoral Beach day, they may bring swimmers and towel. Students should wear the Redlands PE uniform and please be aware that morning tea, lunch and snacks will be provided.

Yr 10 Harbour Cruise

Last Friday night, Yr 10 enjoyed the sights of Sydney Harbour aboard the Yr 10 Harbour Cruise and this served as a wonderful celebration of the year passed. Students thoroughly enjoyed this milestone event and they are to be commended for their sterling behaviour ensuring the night was enjoyed by all. It was lovely to see parents waving off their children from King St Wharf and we thank parents for their support of this event.

Student Exchange

It is certainly true that our Yr 10 students “let their light shine”. This wonderful photo of Bethany Richardson (on Exchange in France) was recently shared with me. Bethany looks to be enjoying France and the marvellous benefits of this cultural opportunity.

Student Achievements

Sebastian Dobson will be competing in the Australian Schools Tennis Challenge in Albury. The Australian Schools Tennis Challenge has been the premier secondary school team Tennis event in the country since 1996. This event provides the opportunity for the best secondary school teams to come together to play each other and celebrate their achievements on a national stage.

Basketball

Congratulations to Nick Goerner, Rachel Kinghorn, Gus Miller, Yola Reinecke and James Wells who are part of our 1sts Basketball team. These students have been selected to represent Redlands at the Australian Schools Basketball Championships from 1-6 December. We wish them every success at this high-level competition.

Year 9

Social Awareness Program

Next Thursday, Yr 9 students are running a BBQ and bookstore fundraiser, with all proceeds going towards Room to Read. The bookstore will be compiled from books donated from all Year Groups in the school and these books will then be available for any student to acquire by donating a gold coin to Room to Read. It would be greatly appreciated if any books can be donated by Yr 9s and their families in the coming days.

STEAM

This week for two days, Yr 9 have been involved in STEAM activities – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics. Students have been given a project that involves auditing our electricity usage in School and looking at ways to reduce this amount both at school and at home. The aim is for each group to produce a Business Plan to be presented to senior management as to how the school can minimise its carbon footprint and reduce energy costs.

Surf Education

Students participated in the surf education program at Collaroy Beach on Monday. Unfortunately, due to the extreme heat on Tuesday, the program was condensed into one day. The students had fun in the water, learning how to surf.

Australian Schools Basketball Championships

Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to attend the Australian Schools Basketball Championships in Melbourne from 1 December: Nikola Barac, Sasha Jansz, Julia Saunders and Oliver Stephens.

Australian Schools Tennis Challenge

Congratulations to James Robinson for representing Redlands at the upcoming Australian Schools Tennis Challenge from 23 November in Albury. We wish him all the best!

Interesting Article of the Week

please read

As Yr 9s are involved in STEAM activities for two days this week, I have attached a website link, which talks about the importance of students learning skills that make them employable as the job market is changing. Skills such as problem-solving, taking initiative and independent thinking are important for employers, and can be developed through the areas and projects involved in STEAM.

Fiji Service Learning Opportunity

Next year, in the 2020 October school holidays, students from Yr 9 2020 will have the opportunity to travel to Fiji and immerse themselves in Fijian life. This is the fourth year that Redlands has partnered with Rustic Pathways to provide this opportunity for Yr 9 students.

The trip is split into two sections. The first is spent in a highlands village, where students are accommodated via a homestay program and engage in a range of cultural immersion and service activities. Following this, students return to the coast at Rustic Pathways Momi Bay Base. During this time, students work with a Marine Biologist to assist and learn about environmental management of the surrounding reef and coastal area.

This program gives students a wide range of experiences, whilst developing their understanding of the Fijian culture. It is designed to both educate and challenge students, helping them to embrace the concept of being a global citizen.

All parents and students are invited to find out more at an Information Evening on Thursday 28 November at 6.15pm in the Roseby Library on the Senior Campus. Any questions should be directed to Mr Colyer at scolyer@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for the Junior School are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.

Every Little Bit Helps

This has been an incredibly harrowing and difficult week in NSW and Queensland as the soaring temperatures and winds have sparked a number of devastating bushfires. Even in Sydney, the effects of the region’s plight have been felt and I know that many in our Redlands community have personal connections to people and places that are literally in the line of fire.

Tomorrow, the whole Redlands community will come together to fundraise to support our rural fire services and affected families through monetary donations, which I know will assist to making a small difference to the lives of many. Just yesterday, I received a timely email from Junior School parent, Mara Bond, who assists in collecting for the Every Little Bit Helps charity that we support at the start of each term through collecting travel wash items. Mara collected the small red bins last Friday and passed them to the charity this week and received a message from the charity’s founder saying, “the timing of your donations were perfect. We had a request today for care packs for fire victims in Grafton and so with Redlands donations and another, we were able to make 70 care packs that will be sent tomorrow so thank you”.

I know that you will join me in keeping those affected in your thoughts and prayers in these coming days and weeks and I am thankful that our School community can respond with compassion to support others.

Speech Day 2019

As you would have seen in the calendar, our Junior School Speech Day takes place at 11.00am on Wednesday 4 December and will again be held at The Big Top, Luna Park. All students are expected to attend this final formal occasion of the school year and further details of student arrival times for rehearsals and the event will be communicated to families in the next week.

Yr 6 Car Wash Fundraiser – Postponed

Whilst we were initially granted a permit from Sydney Water, with both the current water restrictions and this week’s unprecedented bushfires, we have now been advised to postpone the planned the car washing fundraiser this Saturday. I thank the students who signed up to take part and parents who also signed up to have their cars cleaned. Particular thanks are extended to Yr 6 School Captain, Krishna Gupta, for his meticulous leadership of this idea. If we are able to procure another date, we will communicate this to the community.

Academic Success

Following last term’s ICAS Assessments, which a number of our students take, we were thrilled to be informed that Jesse Forrest (Yr 6) has been confirmed as the winner of this year’s UNSW ICAS Medal Winner for English, presented for the highest score across the whole of the NSW/ACT region. This is the first time that the School has had a primary medal winner and the medal will be presented at an official ceremony later this month which his class teacher and his parents will attend. I congratulate Jesse on this outstanding achievement and we also acknowledge the guidance and tutelage of the teachers who taught him prior to him joining us at Redlands this year.

2020 Orientation Day

Last Friday saw us welcome over 50 new students who will join the Junior School in 2020 as part of their process of orientation into Redlands. Our current students welcomed their soon-to-be peers with warmth and friendship, as many of the new students commented on to me in the final session I spent with them. All of them left having made a new friend or two, an aim of both theirs and us for the morning.

As part of the day, Yrs 2, 3, 4 and 5 also moved up a year to the Year Groups that they will be in next year. This allowed them some time with new teachers, new students, and begin to get a feel of new learning spaces and expectations. Students rotated around each classroom doing a series of engaging activities and from speaking to many students and observing them, I know that this time was hugely beneficial for many of them.

12th Annual House Poetry Recital

Monday saw our 12th Annual House Poetry Recital, a joyous event that both students and teachers look forward to. This term, every single Junior School student has been immersed in poetry having read, written, appreciated and presented poems. With one representative selected from each Junior School class, the rest of the school enjoyed a truly memorable start to the week with our performers showing poise, charisma and confidence as they delivered their respective poems to the audience of students, teachers and their parents.

As a new aspect to this event, students were excited to hear poems read by a number of teachers. As well as Junior School teachers, Mr Latimer, Ms Cleary, Mr Hemopo and Mrs Robinson, we were thrilled to welcome both Mr Corcoran (Head of Secondary School) and Mrs Rolon (Head of English), to the recital. As an English teacher too, Mr Corcoran joined Mrs Rolon in opening the recital by presenting their favourite poems to a captivated Junior School.

Well done to all of the students for their involvement this term and, in particular, the students listed below who performed so marvellously on Monday.

NSW State Athletics Championships Success

Last week, Junior School students Daniel Benoleil, Jeffrey Benoleil, Ashley Corn and Joel Daily competed at the NSWPSSA State Athletics Championships, representing the NSW Combined Independent Schools team in the 4x100m relay event and Joel also competed in the Long Jump.

It was a fantastic experience for the boys who ran brilliantly to narrowly miss out on a podium place by 0.03seconds, finishing 4th in the final. For interested viewers, please enjoy this link of the race and scroll through to the 7 hours 8 minutes mark to watch the boys run in lane 8.  Excitedly, Joel went one better to pick up a bronze medal in the Long Jump and it was a pleasure to acknowledge the boys in our assembly this week. As I mentioned to the assembly of students, whilst there is a degree of natural athleticism in the boys, I am fully aware of their dedication and commitment to training and improvement over many weeks that has resulted in this achievement, of which we are all enormously proud.

Musical Performances

Congratulations to our Junior Strings groups who performed exceptionally well at Monday’s Strings Concert. On this same day, our assembly was treated to the cool sounds of our Junior Jazz Band and over the course of the week, many students have been performing for their parents in lunch time music soirees. At all of these events, the joy of performing for others is a wonderful reward for the hours of practice and tuition that comes beforehand, which I recognise and applaud our talented musicians for.

Surf Education

Based at Freshwater Beach, our Junior School students completed their Term 4 Surf Education program today, which has been another purposeful learning experience. As well as being great fun, an important aim of the program is to ensure that our students feel comfortable and safe in the ocean ahead of the upcoming summer holidays. Junior School students enjoyed rotating through a range of different activities in small groups including:

  • Resuscitation and beach first aid
  • Tube rescues
  • Board paddling and board rescues
  • Beach flags racing
  • Surfboards – learning the wave
  • Touch football
  • Beach volleyball
  • Float and survive – identifying a rip

My thanks are extended to Mrs Robinson from our PDHPE department who has coordinated the program for the students to enjoy and benefit from.

With the current devastating effects of unprecedented bushfires in NSW and Queensland, the School will be holding a Mufti Day this Friday 15 November with students and teachers encouraged to support our rural fire services and affected families through donations. I know that the fires have impacted relatives of those within our Redlands community. Thank you for joining me in keeping these people and so many others in your thoughts in these coming days and weeks. As with all Mufti Days, please adhere to the dress requirements of closed-in shoes and sun safe clothing.

Exporting Content on Seesaw

We hope that you have enjoyed seeing your child’s learning on Seesaw throughout their time in the Preparatory School. For any student who is leaving the Preparatory School this year and all Yr 2 students progressing to Yr 3, we will be archiving your child’s activity on Seesaw from January 2020. After this time these families will no longer be able to view any activity. If you would like to keep a copy of your child’s work that has been shared on Seesaw you can download and save it to a personal computer. Instructions on how to download student content has been written on Redlands Pulse. All students in Kindergarten and Yr 1 who are continuing at Redlands will continue to see their learning on Seesaw, you do not need to save anything yet.

Prep Presentation Day

The Trybooking system for the Prep Presentation Day is now accessible and will remain open until Sunday 24 November at 9.00pm, after which time no bookings can be made. More details can be found in Upcoming Events.

Yr 2 Orientation Day

Yr 2 enjoyed a delightful visit to the Junior School last Friday as part of their transition into Yr 3. Time was spent in the Yr 3 classrooms meeting teachers, specialist staff and orientating themselves with their environment for 2020. Thank you to Mrs Sharp and Mr Latimer for their organisation.

On Monday this week, all Yr 2 parents were emailed a detailed letter from Mrs Sharp providing parents with an overview of the strategies in place to support the students’ transition to the Junior School next year. Some of these strategies relate to changes to pick-up arrangements and uniform for PE lessons. Please read the letter carefully as these will come into effect from next week, Monday 18 November. Please speak directly to your class teacher or Mrs Sharp if you have any questions.

Stationery List Information

All parents/carers of Preparatory 2020 students should now have received an email providing information on the process of ordering books and stationery for the 2020 school year. As we reconcile our inventory in the Library over the Christmas break there will be no parent borrowing during this time.

K-6 Strings Concert

Congratulations to all the students who took part in the Strings Concert last Monday. Unfortunately I was unable to attend however I am told that the Yr 2 students and the Preparatory School String Ensemble performed beautifully. Preparatory students thoroughly enjoy watching the Junior School students perform and seeing the possibilities should they continue to learn their string instruments. Thank you to all of the Music staff who have so skilfully prepared the students organised and hosted such a wonderful concert.

Weekly Results

Basketball

Round 3 was an exciting round as we had almost all teams at our home venue, NBISC.

Boys

In the Open division we won all three games. The 1sts had a close contest against St Andrew’s, managing to pull away in the last quarter for a 79-68 win. The 2nds and 4ths both secured a win over Oakhill and St Pius respectively. Our 17As were the only team that finished the day with a victory in a very close match. With the game going into two overtime periods and finally golden goal, it was a free throw by Tom Huizenga that sealed the victory and ended the game. The 15s saw three wins and one loss, with both the 15A and 15C teams managing to put more than 30 points between them and their opponent. Both the 14A and 14Bs put up a great fight, although the competition by both St Andrew’s and Oakhill proved too strong. There were another three wins in the 13s with the 13As continuing their undefeated streak in a 55-27 win over St Andrew’s. The 13Cs finished with a 31-11 win over St Patrick’s D and the 13Es were one of our few travelling teams with another close win, a 19-14 victory over St Spyridon.

Girls

The 1sts had an impressive 60 point win over the ISA Champions from last year, Central Coast and have been an exciting team to watch with their unselfish style of play. The 2nds had a close match against St Spyridon’s 1sts in a narrow 8 point loss. The Inter As remain undefeated in the first three rounds with another impressive 31-18 win over CCGS. The Inter Bs had their first win of the season which was a 39-20 win over Blue Mountains Inter A side, while the Inter Cs had a tough loss against St Pauls Grammar School. The Junior As had a very close game throughout, narrowly losing by one point to the Central Coast Junior As and the Junior Bs had a 29-16 win against Blue Mountains.

Best of luck to all teams this Saturday in Round 4. Many of our teams will be travelling outside of Sydney for their games, parents are reminded to complete the online bus permissions through the Redlands portal for their son/daughter.

Rowing

Last weekend the Rowing program attended the Hunter Valley Grammar School Regatta. Out of 173 crews entered across the day, a Redlands crew finished on the podium on 101 occasions with 34 first placed winners. This is an outstanding effort from our students but what was most pleasing is how well our new rowing students raced, especially the Year 7 students who were more than competitive against crews with far more experience. Results can be found on Redlands Pulse.

A huge thank you should be extended to our Friends of Rowing group who not only ran an info session at the boatshed prior to our return from the regatta for boat unloading, but also supplied pizzas for our students at the conclusion of the day. Another thank you should also be extended to Sonia Stewart who took a number of photos at the regatta. These photos can be found at the following link: https://www.sonartpixel.com/Newcastle-regatta.

The next Friends of Rowing meeting will be held in room H2.6 from 6.00 – 7.00pm on Monday 18 November, all families and supporters are welcome to attend.

Touch Football

It was a tough week for our Senior teams with our 1sts, 2nds and 3rds all losing to Barker College. Our 1sts have been showing some great improvements this year, but were no match for the reigning Division 1 champions. Our 2nds had a fanstastic game, with some slick ball movement throughout the match, only going down 2-3. It will be a close battle in the next rounds against Barker. Our 3rds had a tough time with Barker showing strong signs of offence and defence to take the match 0-7. Our Senior 4ths travelled to Oxley in what was another close game for the girls, unfortunately losing 3-4.

Our Junior teams had some mixed results. Our Junior As were taking on Blue Mountains Grammar, a team who last year knocked the girls out of the Semi Finals. Some nice inter play between the links and wings proved too much for BMGS with the girls taking the game 7-0. Our Junior Bs have been slowly improving, coming up against last years Junior B Champions, St Andrew’s. The game seemed to swing from end to end, with St Andrew’s taking the win 0-2. The Junior C team have had draws recently and they were looking to capitalise on some great skills they have been showing at training as they ventured down to Oxley. This one came down to the wire and for the second week in a row, finished in a draw! Our Junior D team are working really hard on their communication in defence and running onto the ball in attack, with a number of combinations getting better as the games go on. Unfortunately they lost to Chevalier College.

This week will see our 1sts, 3rds, Junior A and Junior B teams travelling to Oxley College (bus departing Redlands at 8.15am). Our 2nds, 4ths and Junior C teams are at Macquarie Uni and our Junior D teams are at St Pauls Grammar School. All games times and fields can be found on the Redland Rhino.

Junior Sport

NSWCIS Athletics

Our Junior Boys 4 x 100m relay team, made up of Daniel Benoleil, Jeffrey Benoleil, Ash Corn and Joel Dail, have really raised the bar for athletics in the Junior School. Qualifying for the final after gruelling heat and Semi Final races, the boys raced in Lane 8 – the toughest lane to run in and despite having no vision of their competitors ran an incredible 57.13 seconds to narrowly miss a medal, by just 0.03 seconds. The fourth fastest ten year old schoolboy relay team in NSW is a pretty big statement and with the finishing speed of Joel Daily, if the race had gone another 2m they’d be in the medals. What a team and what a time!

Joel also managed a pretty heavy workload during the Carnival, qualifying for the 100m Semi Finals after a strong heat run and then jumping just short of a PB in the Long Jump to claim the Bronze medal in a nailbiting Long Jump Final.

IPSHA Mixed Basketball

Trinity Grammar hosted our A – D teams and learned quickly that despite having extra height and physicality, translating that into points against our energetic defence is difficult. Meanwhile speed and skill of our teams across the board meant points in quick bursts and our A, B and C teams were all victorious, despite being outmuscled around the court.

Our E, F G and H teams were equally as dogged, making life tough for their bigger opponents with what has become a trademark for Redlands basketballers. Heart and hustle. G and E teams both came away with emphatic wins.

Cricket

Redlands cricketers took on Shore last weekend and created all sorts of havoc bowling first on a bumpy pitch taking 14 wickets in their super eight encounter. Rowan Petersen took his first five wicket haul and was supported by tight bowling across the whole attack. Max Garvey, Liam Petersen and Rory McMillan all chipping in with two wickets apiece. Yr 4 cricketers Ryan Doherty and Rohan then showed the way by equal top scoring with ten runs each. Max Garvey and Rory McMillan showing we’re a team of all-rounders, both scored nine each after impressing with the ball.

Netball

Congratulations to Ava Mills and Scarlett Cortes who have advanced to the final stages of Rep trialling for their respective NSNA Netball teams. NSNA is a strong association with a long history of success and to be at the level they are now, in either state age title contention or development team, is a huge result after a long commitment. Well done girls.

Sailing

Our Wednesday afternoon sailors continue to enjoy the best that Sydney Harbour (and weather) has to offer.

Tennis

Our team fared well again last week against Cranbrook and played some great Tennis in both doubles and singles. Zach Ressas continues to impress with his strong singles form, whilst Harrison Meagher and Leonardo Vaccarezza were untouchable in their doubles match. Both Harrison and Leonardo converted their strong form into singles as well with strong wins against Cranbrook. Keith Liu impressed with a tightly contested singles win.

Our players ranked in positions 9-16 enjoyed a morning of match play in an internal series of singles matches at Cammeray. The team and skill level is really building and the quality of play over the multitude of singles matches was impressive to watch.

Our ranks 9-20 are invited to another series of internal matches on the Last Saturday of regular term sport – Saturday 23 November from 8.00-10.00am.

2020 Term 1 Sports Choices

Information concerning sports choices for Summer sports Term 1, 2020 has been emailed this week and is available on Redlands Pulse. Parents are encouraged to look at the information pack with their child, discuss options and commitments and select a sport via Trybooking before Friday 22 November.

2020 Griffin Ambassadors Program

Griffin Theatre Company is seeking applications for its 2020 Ambassadors program. Griffin Ambassadors is an annual access-all-areas program for Yrs 10, 11 and 12 students drawn from a diverse range of schools across NSW. Ambassadors are united by a common curiosity about contemporary Australian stories, a love of theatre and the motivation to know more. They might be techies, budding playwrights, directors or performers, or maybe just love going to see theatre.

Ambassadors participate in a structured, year-long program of activities. They attend all Griffin main season productions for free throughout the year, engage with casts and creative teams in post-show discussions, and explore various aspects of theatre craft in special workshops. It’s an opportunity for students to discover new Australian plays in a unique and intimate space, explore the issues behind the plays and potentially source scripts for Drama and Theatre major works. Interested students should apply here.

Term 4 Music Instrumental Program Concerts

Over the past few weeks, the Music Department has celebrated student performances on the Junior Campus, with children participating in the Yrs 4 and 5 MIP Concert and K-6 Strings Concert. Both concerts were remarkable showcases of musical achievement by all our students and represented the sequential learning experiences as a key component of the Preparatory School and the Junior School Music Instrumental program.

Einstein once said “Life without playing music is inconceivable to me. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music…I get most joy in life out of music.” Alongside students learning new skills on their instruments this year, the Instrumental program also focusses on assisting children to build confidence and form new relationships in team-building contexts. Studies show a direct correlation between musical training and academic success, with research proving that in learning to play an instrument, young children improve memory and abstract reasoning skills, which are essential for many other disciplines like Maths and Science.

In highlighting the musical skills that students have been developing throughout the year, it was evident in these concerts that the various groups and ensembles were well-prepared, confident and skilfully demonstrated a range of instrumental techniques in creating music.

We would like to thank all music specialists, conductors and leaders of these groups and ensembles, in delivering polished, stylistic and expressive performances. In particular, we would like to extend our thanks to MIC of Band Mrs Hilary Luck and Acting MIC Strings Mrs Mar’yana Sywak for their leadership and coordination of these programs across the school, and the superb organisational support provided by Mrs Jacqueline McGlade.

It has been wonderful to observe such great collaboration this year, as together we all build important arts education experiences for students as they explore and create music together.
