RPFA Second Hand Uniform and Books Sales

Thank you to the RPFA Committee and all parent volunteers who are involved in organising the second hand uniform sale taking place on Sunday 2 December on the Senior Campus. Without your support and dedication this event, which is beneficial to many our families, would not be possible.

“The RPFA very much appreciates your donations of surplus, used or outgrown school uniforms. Organising this sale supports both sustainability and a good cause with proceeds applied to the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund.”

Lisa MacDonald, RPFA President 2018

Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund

An Endowment Fund for a means-tested Scholarship was launched in 2010 by Principal Dr Peter Lennox. The gift of an education through a scholarship can change and inspire the lives of outstanding students and can assist in attracting and providing those opportunities to other students who otherwise would not be able to receive the benefits of a Redlands education. Unfortunately for many deserving children, such opportunities are not an option.

The academic excellence, pastoral care and scope of extra curricular activities that students receive at Redlands are of a very high standard and we believe our teachers and tutors prepare well-rounded young adults to be “life ready”.

“It was a dream of mine to start up the Redlands Scholarship Trust Foundation, and an Endowment Fund for a means-tested Scholarship was launched in 2010. The intent of this scholarship is to provide an educational opportunity to students with demonstrated leadership skills and a passion for learning”.

From the Principal

On Tuesday this week, students and teachers in the Secondary School commemorated Remembrance Day with a special service for the centenary of the Armistice, which concluded the Great War. Remembrance Day has been celebrated ever since to honour all those who served or gave their lives on behalf of their country in that terrible conflict and also to remember the many men and women who have since served their country as members of Australia’s Armed Forces.

In addition to the Ode of Remembrance and the Last Post, there were two moving reflections from Year 11 students Lindsay McNeil and Mackenzie Lofts, providing context around such a distant topic for young people today, and two other reflections by our Senior Campus Chaplain, Ms Lihou, and by Mr Corcoran.

Lindsay spoke of her great grandfather who was a member of the London Regiment of the Royal Fusiliers during World War I and her grandfather who fought in the British North Africa campaign during World War II; and read a poem The Eleventh Hour, written by Herbert Swaffield who was in the same battalion as her great grandfather. Mackenzie spoke about how those who fought for their fellow men and women secured our futures and shaped our culture, with our lives today based on core values including courage, perseverance, sacrifice and mateship.

A very poignant moment was the performance of In Flanders Fields by the Jazz Vocal Ensemble and Chamber Ensemble. Then at the conclusion of the service, Isabel Binnekamp and Lachlan van der Pluijm, Service Prefects, laid a wreath at the foot of the pine tree in the front garden, which has been grown from a pine cone seed from the Lone Pine battle site at Gallipoli.

The School’s Remembrance Day Service followed a Remembrance Day Service on Sunday at a packed St Peter’s Church, which I and other Redlands colleagues attended, along with our Service Prefects, the Jazz Vocal Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble and Junior Voices. Our musicians’ performance of In Flanders Fields was as deeply moving at the Sunday service as it was at the service this week at our School. The School was also represented at the Remembrance Day Service at North Sydney by School Captains, Chloe Church and Josiah Tea, who laid a wreath of remembrance on behalf of the School. Lest We Forget.

Remembrance Day

This past Sunday, many members of our Redlands community joined thousands of other Australians to pause and commemorate the service of men and women in the armed forces on the centenary of the Armistice. Our musicians provided beautiful instrumental and choral pieces to assist the Remembrance Day Service at St Peter’s Anglican Church and our Prefects laid wreaths of remembrance at the St Peter’s and North Sydney services, respectively.

This past Tuesday, we held our own Remembrance Day Assembly. It was a moving assembly with more beautiful music from our musicians as well as poignant reflections by staff and students. I thought I would share an excerpt from the reflection I shared with our students, which is below.

“On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, 100 years ago, the guns fell silent after over four years of bloody conflict in World War 1. It was called the War to End All Wars, and at its conclusion, beleaguered nations around the world thought they would share in a lasting peace. But sadly, two decades later, an even greater, more destructive conflict ensued as World War II once again left countries in tatters and families in mourning.

Since then the cycle of war has continued to spin out of control with continuing conflicts leaving millions and millions dead.

Today, we, the Redlands community, pause to remember.

We remember those who did not come home and made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country.

We remember those who were left behind to mourn their lost loved ones.

We remember those who fought bravely and returned from war to fight even tougher battles, on the home front.

But we also pause to acknowledge. To acknowledge the many men and women who currently serve in the armed forces and continue to espouse the values of duty and honour and selflessness.

And finally, we continue to long for peace. A peace that has eluded us for the past century, despite the celebrations at the armistice 100 years ago. A peace that, like Gatsby’s green light might seem forever out of reach, but is worth continuing to strive for.

So, in memory of the Centenary of the Armistice, I would like read Debbie Hollick’s brief poem, “In Gratitude of Silence”.

Silent now the soldiers sleep, their tales long laid to rest.
I knew them not yet still I weep and place a poppy o’er my breast.

They were husbands, brothers, fathers, sons; so valiantly they fought.
On shores stained red, on hands and knees; it was our freedom that they sought.

Courageously they stood their ground but freedom carries a cost.
Thousands of men were wounded and countless lives were lost.

So in gratitude of silence and all those who have served,
sleep now, you have earned it. Your peace is well deserved.

Cocurricular Values

Last Saturday I spent Saturday morning with our rowers at the boatshed and out on the water of Middle Harbour. I believe Rowing is a wonderful example of the holistic education and strong values which sports and our many and varied cocurricular programs can provide our students. Some of the values that I saw on display from our rowers that morning included hard work, teamwork, enjoyment, resilience, respect and responsibility. I encourage students to continue to develop these, and other, important values in their cocurricular involvement over the remainder of the year.

Yr 8 STEAM Project

On Tuesday, the classrooms and corridors of the John Roberts Centre were abuzz with Yr 8 students defining, designing, discovering and dreaming questions and solutions as part of our STEAM project. The focus for this year is “What Lies Beneath” and students are exploring issues affecting the Great Barrier Reef and coming up with possible solutions. The day started with all of Yr 7 and Yr 8 in Redlands Hall to hear a keynote address from Alexia Giannesini, a student Ambassador for the Australian Youth Coalition Climate. Students also heard from our current Environment Captains, Alice McDonald and Benjamin Piro, who also performed a song especially written for the day. I look forward to seeing and hearing the Yr 8 students’ final designs tomorrow during their STEAM Expo.

Lost Property

As we come to the end of the year, the Lost Property pile is building up. We would ask students to please go through the Lost Property (located outside of the Medical Centre) in the next two weeks. On Friday 30 November, the RPFA will go through the pile and take any good quality, unnamed items to the Second Hand Uniform Sale on Sunday 2 December. All items not collected and not used in the Second Hand Uniform Sale will be discarded.

Chaplain

Our students have taken time out to reflect on the Armistice Day; the ceasing of hostilities at the end of World War I.  A group of our students sang and played at St Peter’s Anglican Church, serving the broader community with beautiful and reflective music that enriched the service. It was deeply appreciated by all and thanks goes to the students and staff who provided this music.

Our school then gathered on Tuesday for a Remembrance Service. We remembered and honoured the sacrifice of the men and women who served our country, particularly hearing about family members of Yr 11 students Lindsay McNeil and Mackenzie Lofts. There were also reflections about the 62,000 Australians who died, commemorated in a beautiful display outside The Australian War Memorial in Canberra. There is a large area of land divided into plots to represent each month of the war. Each plot has hand-knitted poppies, each representing a life lost in that month. It is a beautiful and moving sight. These men and women demonstrated a deep sense of duty to protect others and defend the principles of freedom and justice.

The Armistice Day was a day of hope. A day to celebrate the end of war, tainted with sadness at extraordinary loss of life and looking forward in the hope that this was the ‘war to end all wars’. We know that this was not to be the case. Today we still have conflict, we still deploy soldiers and we still long for peace.

As I was reflecting on this, a student asked me why a God who is good, would not have intervened to stop the conflict. This is such a good question! God could have, and will intervene to bring the end to all conflicts, death and corruption of our world. This will happen when Jesus returns and it will herald the New Creation. God has chosen not to do so yet as there are still those he has deemed will be born. However, we also need to lay responsibility where it is due: people with pride, hate and selfishness cause the conditions that lead to war. Our armed forces enter into these situations to defend and bring justice. However, the real cause of war is broken and sinful hearts. To bring the longed for peace, hearts must be changed. God knows our deepest need is for our hearts to be changed. This is why God became human. Jesus, who was proclaimed as the Prince of Peace was the very one who would bring the means of healing hearts, bringing genuine reconciliation. He would provide the means to transform us from enemies to God’s friends and then bring unity to all humans. Only as our hearts are changed can we find genuine and lasting peace.

Christmas Giving

As the year comes to a close we will be undertaking our two regular donation drives. Donations should be brought to Tutor Time where there will be collection boxes. We did a great job mid-year for the winter collections so hopefully we can match our efforts and help make the Christmas season special or more comfortable for others less fortunate.

Students in Yrs 7 – 9 will be asked to contribute a gift to the Anglicare Toys and Tucker drive.

We would like donations of new toys and non-perishable food for Christmas hampers. Anglicare will pick everything up and take it to the Anglicare warehouse where it’s sorted and packed by teams of volunteers. Food hampers and gift parcels are then distributed to people in need through Anglicare’s emergency relief and family support programs and by local churches.

Students in Yrs 10 and 11 are asked to contribute to the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. The Hostel provides accommodation and specialised support to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The service aims to provide immediate support and accommodation for people at the time of crisis as well as facilitate access to other essential services and more permanent housing. These services range from provision of nutritional meals, clothing, showers and basic medical to intensive case management, legal and housing support, specialised health care, advocacy and  providing a safe, welcoming environment for people who are sleeping rough and have experienced trauma. At this time of the year we are seeking donations of new underwear and toiletries. Suggested items include toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soaps and shampoo, hand sanitiser, body wash, face moisturiser, new underwear and socks. Donated items are distributed by Matthew Talbot to their clients in need over the Christmas period.

Mary’s House Gift Wrapping

Again, this Christmas students will will have an opportunity to volunteer to help out with Christmas gift wrapping at Myer Chatswood in support of Mary’s House. This organisation is run by the North Shore Women’s Benevolent Association to support women and children who need help because of domestic violence. Interested students in Yrs 10 and 11 should look out for a sign-up email in the next week.

Carols Performances

Next week our Jazz Choir will be providing a lunchtime Christmas Carols performance at Bougainvillea Retirement Community. Throughout the year, students in Yrs 7 – 9 have been visiting Bougainvillea at lunchtime to read, chat and help with small tech issues on iPhones and iPads etc. This has been a very valued interaction.

Girls’ Bathroom Posters

In high school, the girls’ bathroom can function as a multi-purpose centre, fixing hair, tidying uniform or sharing in code about a funny anecdote which just happened in class. It is also a place where a student can find a temporary peacefulness, resume energy and carry on for the rest of the day. This week, Asha Boswarva and Bronte Vanderfield put up colourful signs with encouraging messages spread across the entire bathroom. The powerful words didn’t just brighten up the room but also served as powerful reminders to motivate girls about their strength and confidence. I am sure that their thoughtful initiative has been appreciated by the fellow students and staff and has contributed to enhance a positive learning environment.

Thank You

I was very glad to see that many Yr 11 students came to support their peers at the Basketball games held at Dunnet Hall on the Junior Campus for the first time in several years. Their cheers from the stand supported the teams going through ups and downs during the matches and created a vibrant atmosphere in the Hall.

Thank you to Yr 11 Music students and the Service Prefects who attended the Remembrance Day Service at St Peter’s Anglican Church on Sunday.

Yr 9 Examinations

Students are to be commended for their behaviour and engagement during last week’s examination period. Yr 9 students applied themselves well and completed their exams with a sound and focused attitude. Furthermore, it was pleasing to note that students heeded instruction and went directly home at lunchtime to study. We were pleased that students rose to the School’s expectations and weren’t seen congregating around Cremorne post their exams. I would like to extend sincere thanks to our Tutors as they have worked tirelessly with students in past weeks to assist them to  develop sound attitudes to study as well as assisting students to hone their examination technique. Lastly, many thanks must go to you, the parents, for your care and encouragement of your sons and daughters. We are grateful for your continued support.

The Post Examination Wash-up

As teachers and parents we all share high expectations for our Yr 9 students. Although high achievement may be front and centre in the minds of many parents, I would ask that during the coming days as results are returned to students, we all endeavor to take a balanced view of their results. It is inevitable that students may perform better in some subjects than in others. We encourage students to celebrate their achievements, acknowledge where perhaps more revision may have been needed and to remember that giving of one’s best is the most important takeaway from this formal examination period. Please wait for your child’s school report and carefully read the feedback from individual subject teachers.

I would ask that you encourage your sons and daughters to take balanced view of their results and implement suggestions from their teachers in relation to examination feedback. Both Mr Walker and I have encouraged students to remember that they are to ‘run their own race’ and not to compare their results with others. We encourage students to focus on incremental improvement, no matter how small, from one semester to another, as the cumulative effect will pay significant dividends in the long run.

Congratulations to Angus McLachlan who has received a scholarship to the Princess Grace Academy in Monaco. A terrific achievement and very well deserved! Congratulations Angus.

Vaccinations

Our second and final round of HPV Vaccinations were held on Wednesday. Yr 7 were absolute superstars, taking the jab in their stride. If your child was absent and had their first vaccination at school in March, they are able to have a catch-up vaccination at school in 2019.

Assistance Dogs Australia

Thank you all for your kind support of our fundraising activities for Assistance Dogs Australia. Ms Walker and I were overwhelmed by the number of yummy treats provided for our Bake Sale in Week 4 (our desks were piled with countless cakes, slices, cookies, muffins). On Wednesday, we held the House Coin Competition and your generous contributions were so much appreciated (funds are still being tallied). Congratulations to McDouall for winning the coin completion, they will be enjoying a pizza lunch in Week 7. Notable mention goes to Lily Swift (supported by Roseby) for creating a coin ‘doggy’ artwork. Thank you to our Service Prefects and House Captains for their assistance with this event. Whether it’s a pet providing companionship, or an assistance dog supporting people with disabilities, our canine friends always come through for us. We look forward to welcoming Assistance Dogs Australia to Redlands on Friday.

Burn Bright

On Wednesday 21 November, Burn Bright will be visiting Yr 7 to run a full day program called Recipe for Success. The program provides students with a toolkit to help them build important skills that will assist them in Secondary School. It assists young people to build a sense of identity, supports new friendships and enhances self-efficacy to improve resilience.

Pastoral Care – Student Led Assemblies

Yr 7 are hijacking Year Meetings! A core group of students have eagerly met each week to plan and shape two assemblies they feel passionate about.

  1. Help! I’m Freaking Out (Week 6) | Students reflect on examinations and consider personal strategies to assist during times of pressure in order to promote balance (and a litter humour).
  2. Love Yourself (Week 7) | This assembly will explore how we can find value from the inside out rather than from external sources –  value beyond looks and appearances.

Both topics connect nicely with content covered in our Burn Bright workshop on Wednesday in Week 6.

Lower North Shore STEM Competition

Yesterday afternoon, we were delighted to host the inaugural School Lower North Shore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) competition where 150 students from twelve local schools presented STEM experiments that they had designed and created.

The young scientists from Yrs 1-6 came up with some wonderfully creative, scientific thinking and the notion of them being problem finders rather than problem solvers, which we frequently talk about, was plain to see. With over 75 entries, the judging panel which included our Head of Secondary Science, Ms Harrisson, and our Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mr Coutts, had their work cut out to evaluate all of the experiments and it was enriching for me to see the level of thinking and reflection of the students present. This opportunity was presented to all of our Junior School students and it was wonderful to see many of them take this chance to challenge themselves in this forum and present and respond to questions from over 200 parents, teachers and guests. Congratulations to our Redlands entrants: Jay Roger (Yr 3); Julia Cooper-Hor, Kira Delaney, Freya Stasko (all Yr 4); Oliver Cooke, James Gray, Angus McInnes, Alessandro Scali (Yr 5); and River Stefanovic and Charlotte Waterland (Yr 6). Charlotte was also placed 3rd overall, which was a highly commendable achievement. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Dr Alana Wylie and Eye Heart Science into the future. Dr Wylie has been a wonderful scientist in residence for us over the last seven years.

11th Annual House Poetry Recital

Monday saw our 11th annual House Poetry Recital, a wonderful enrichment opportunity that has involved every single Junior School student in the preliminary stages. With one representative from each Junior School class, the rest of the school enjoyed a truly memorable start to the week with our performers showing poise, charisma and confidence as they delivered their respective poems to the audience of students, teachers and their parents. Well done to all of the students for their involvement this term and in particular the students listed below who performed so marvellously on Monday.

2019 Orientation Day

Last Friday saw us welcome over fifty new students who will join the Junior School in 2019 as part of their process of orientation into Redlands. Our students welcomed their soon-to-be peers with warmth and friendship, as many of the new students commented on to me in the final session I had with just them. All of them left having made a new friend or two which was wonderful too. As part of the day, we also moved Yrs 2, 3, 4 and 5 up a year to the Year Groups they will be in next year. This allowed them some time with different teachers and softly begin to get a feel of new learning spaces and expectations. Students rotated around each classroom doing a series of fun activities and I know that this was also hugely beneficial for many of our students.

Remembrance Day Service

Last Sunday, our Junior Voices group were privileged to sing as part of St Peter’s Church Service of Remembrance. Led by Head of Music, Mr Kuilenburg, the group also sang for the Junior School on Monday morning as we spent time reflecting on the significance of this centenary remembrance date.

Speech Day 2018

As you would have seen in the calendar, our Junior School Speech Day takes place at 11.00am on Wednesday 5 December and will again be held at The Big Top, Luna Park. All students are expected to attend this final formal occasion of the year and further details of student arrival times for rehearsals and the event will be published in coming editions of Note Day and communicated to families in the next fortnight.

Tabitha Galvin

Congratulations to Yr 5 student, Tabitha Galvin, who has been selected to join the Royal Ballet School of London’s Spring Intensive program next April in Hong Kong. Part of the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy, Tabitha is extremely excited at this opportunity and we look forward to hearing of her experience next year.

Surf Education

Our Junior School students will complete their Term 4 Surf Education program this week, which has been an unmitigated success with a new venue and provider. Our students have enjoyed rotating through eight different activities in groups of 10-12 with which have been:

  • Resuscitation and beach first aid
  • Tube rescues
  • Board paddling and board rescues
  • Beach flags racing
  • Boogie boards – learning the wave
  • Beach soccer
  • Beach volleyball
  • Float and survive – identifying a rip

As well as being great fun, an important aim of this program is to ensure that our students feel comfortable and safe in the ocean ahead of the summer holidays. My thanks are extended to Ms Robinson from our PDHPE department who has coordinated the program and changes for the students to enjoy at Freshwater Beach.

Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker Campaign

Redlands Junior School will again turn its focus to ‘letting our light shine’ by sharing the joy of Christmas with children in need in Sydney by participating in Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker Campaign.

If you wish to participate, please bring your gifts the Junior School Reception and place them under the Christmas tree. Christmas is a wonderful time to reflect on God’s generous gift to people and on the joy, we can share by giving.

While our focus in Junior School is the Anglicare collection, many families at Redlands also like to support our Secondary School collection for Matthew Talbot Homeless Shelter. Our staff and Yr 11 students serve breakfast there every Monday of the year and it is wonderful to be able to know that the people we meet each week will be the recipients of our gifts.  Our Yr 6 students have also been keen to meet the needs of people experiencing homelessness in a practical way. There will be a box for items in both Prep and Junior School Receptions. Collections begin on Monday 12 November and conclude Tuesday 4 December.

Congratulations to all the talented students who performed at the K-6 Strings Concert this week. It was lovely to see the enthusiasm that the Yr 2 students and the Preparatory School String Ensemble demonstrated. The improvement they have shown from the beginning of the year was evident as they played five songs from the Nursery Rhyme Medley. For the Preparatory students, it is always special for them to watch the Junior School students perform and see the possibilities if they continue to learn their string instruments. Thank you to the expertise and passion of Mr Michael Warby, Master of Strings, Mrs Hilary Luck, Junior Campus Music Coordinator, the Music tutors and all the Music staff who organised and hosted such a wonderful concert.

Yr 2 Orientation Day

Last Friday, Yr 2 enjoyed a delightful visit to the Junior School. They spent some time in the Yr 3 classrooms meeting teachers, specialist staff and orientating themselves with their environment for 2018. Thank you to Mrs Sharp and Mr Latimer for their organisation.

Prep Presentation Day Booking Information

The Preparatory students and staff have been actively organising the upcoming Presentation Day on Tuesday 4 December.  To avoid the worry and stress associated with arriving at Dunnet Hall early in order to secure the perfect seats, we use a free, online booking system for seat allocation. You only need to book seats and no payment is required. To reserve your seats please go to: https://www.trybooking.com/ZDWS. It will close on Thursday 22 November at 4.00pm. No bookings can be made after this time. To ensure equity, the number of seats will be limited to two per family for this event.

Lucy Hill Library

The end of the year is drawing to a close and it is time to retrieve all Library books, account for them and tidy the shelves. As this always seems to take longer than anticipated, we are concluding student and parent borrowing on Monday 19 November. All books will then be due back by Thursday 22 November. Additionally, there will be no parent borrowing over the Christmas break, as we take this time to reconcile our inventory in the Library. Thank you for your patronage. We have been avid readers in the Preparatory School and Preschools as we have loaned over 30,000 books this year. Have a very “bookish” Christmas and enjoy your holidays!

Term 4 Clubs

Our Clubs program concludes on Wednesday 21 November. We hope the students have enjoyed the Clubs on offer this year.

Anglicare Christmas Appeal: Toys ‘n’ Tucker Campaign

Redlands Prep School will again turn its focus to ‘Letting our Light Shine’ by sharing the joy of Christmas with children in need in Sydney. We will be participating in Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker Campaign. If you wish to participate please bring your gifts to the Prep School Reception and place them under the Christmas tree. Christmas is a wonderful time to reflect on God’s generous gift to people and on the joy, we can share by giving. While our focus in Prep School is the Anglicare collection, many families at Redlands also like to support our Secondary School collection for Matthew Talbot Homeless Shelter. Our Yr 11 students serve breakfast there every Monday and it is wonderful to be able to know that the people we meet each week will be the recipients of our gifts. If you would like to participate, please see the list of items below. There will be a box for items in both Prep and Junior School Receptions. Collections begin on Monday 12 November and conclude Tuesday 4 December.

Sport and Academics: Can’t have one without the other.

Sport and physical activity has a multitude of benefits and is vital to the holistic development of a child. More often than not these benefits concentrate on the more obvious physical and mental affects such as positive self-esteem, confidence and reducing the risk of lifestyle disease. Most people would agree that sport makes children ‘generally’ happier and healthier. However, we rarely discuss the positive influence sport has on an individual’s learning and cognition. With the current exam periods which have taken place, it is timely to reflect on the role physical exercise has on cognitive function and ability in young people.

“Physical activity has been shown to stimulate brain development correlating to improved academic performance” Maher, C.L (2016). It also alleviates the health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle so that healthy, active children become better learners. The evidence has accumulated across several contexts and settings – including physical activity, sport programs and school-based curriculum.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in the USA published a report titled Active Education: Growing evidence on physical activity and academic performance. The report outlines the growing body of evidence indicating that physical activity and sports participation benefits both health and academic performance for children. The report examines how physical activity and sport may help school-aged children maximise their academic performance. It also provides an overview of the effects of physical activity on the developing brain.

A further study titled The associations between physical activity, sedentary behaviour and academic performance, investigated cross-sectional relationships between children’s measured physical activity, sedentary behaviour patterns, and academic performance using NAPLAN. Academic performance was correlated against an individual’s level of physical activity across a range of academic measures.

Writing and numeracy achievement were measured positively, significantly related to physical activity, as was the overall proficiency score. – what does this mean??

Children categorised as achieving high physical activity (ie. 45 minutes/day) scored, on average, ten points more than those having low physical activity (ie. 19 minutes/day or less). Impacts of physical activity, and in particular aerobic exercise on cerebral blood flow, and neuroplasticity and executive function, may underpin these associations. This was a landmark study done which identifies favourable relationships between total physical activity time and academic performance.

This was backed up by a recent peer reviewed article in the Journal of Frontiers Psychology (Madelesi, 2018) which showed that physical exercise can induce structural and functional changes in the brain, determining enormous benefit on both cognitive functioning and wellbeing of an individual.

This is important to consider when balancing academic time with physical exercise. Reducing one for another may have the opposite result we are aiming for.

Basketball

Round 3 saw some great improvements across all ages for our Basketball teams. Congratulations to our 13A and 14A Boys who both had very convincing wins against Central Coast Grammar School. It has been great to see our Boys teams competing and having some close contests in Division 1 this year. A great round for our B Boys teams saw Redlands victorious in four out of the five games: 14B, 15B, 17B, Open B. Our 15C Boys had a very convincing win against SACS and our Open C Boys played Redlands 17D Boys in what was a closely contested game. Despite gaining a ten point lead early in the game, the 17Ds were unable to hold their lead and the Open Cs finished with a ten point lead.

With a clean sweep in the Junior Girls, we saw some great basketball and impressive wins. Both of our Inter Girls teams put up a tough fight, but unfortunately couldn’t get across the line. The Open B Girls had a great win against Chevalier and our 1sts Girls had a close loss against Oakhill.

Our ‘at home’ round in Dunnet Hall saw the 1sts Boys, 1sts Girls and 14A Boys playing in Dunnet Hall along with some of our Junior School teams. Thank you to the Friends of Basketball for running the barbeque on the day, it was a great day with a great atmosphere on our home court.

Just a reminder that we have boys’ basketball skills sessions in Lang Gym from 7am-8am on Monday mornings for any players registered for basketball. The girls only basketball sessions are held from 7am-8am in Lang Gym every Wednesday. All Basketball players wishing to improve their individual skill set are encouraged to attend.

If anyone has any photos from the Basketball season to date, please send them through to Kate Seebohm.

Sailing

Monday morning saw the arrival of six new Pacers to be used in conjunction with Redlands and RSYS. The two person three sail boats are a highly sought-after training boat for both kids and adults with the ability to have either a coach in the rib or in the boat to teach techniques and skills.

The boats will primarily be used for Teams Racing, a sailing format that put teams of three boats against each other over an S shaped course. This allows for fast paced, highly skilled and fun racing that can have results waiting until the very end of the race. The Pacer has been adopted as the boat of choice for all schools and with the purchase,  enables Redlands to compete at the Interschool events including the NSW School Teams Racing Championship in April.

The RSYS coaching staff had a long day of unloading and putting them together ready for their first sail on Thursday 15 November with the Redlands school group.

Touch Football

Saturday saw all of Redlands Touch Football playing at Macquarie Uni for the first time, this was a great opportunity for our Junior teams to watch our Senior teams and visa versa. The Junior A team took on Blue Mountains Grammar A team, who had been very impressive in their early rounds. The girls worked hard to implement some three man drives to work inside the opposition half and then remain composed when attacking the try line. This was a tightly contested match, with some confusion around our first try being disallowed. BMGS capitalised on the confusion and scored quickly after, Redlands worked hard to get back into the game and scored just before the half time break to take the game in the break at one all. The 2nd half was a tussle, with both teams looking to attack from inside their own half, but our girls have been working well on their communication so were able to break down the attacking raids that BMGS threw at us. The game finished at 1-1, but after a discussion between the referees at the end of the match they concluded that the Redlands first try counted, so the Junior As won the match 2-1. Off the back of the Junior A win, our 1sts Girls were looking to get a solid hit out against Oxley 1sts. After a slow start, we were on the back foot early with Oxley scoring first. The girls were digging deep, and scored two quick tries, however a small defensive lapse saw Oxley score on the half time hooter and the game was locked at 2-2. The 1sts came out of the half-time break revitalised and revamped, looking to develop a structured game and put into practice what we have been working on to start the year. The half time break worked wonders with the girls scoring quickly to take the game to 3-2. As the game wore on, the girls broke down the Oxley defence and strong work in the middle meant Oxley found it difficult to work the ball out of their own half, and as a result of some quick turn overs, the girls were able to score again, and take the match 4-2.

A special mention must go to the girls in the Junior teams, who not only brought oranges for their team mates, but also provided oranges for their opposition to have at the end of their respective games. This is a great show of sportsmanship and a number of the other schools coaches and parents were very impressed.

Junior Sport

Basketball

Dunnet Hall was abuzz last weekend with the return of some of our favourite Junior School Basketball alumni. Our Junior School teams played their regular matches as curtain raiser games for the Girls and Boys 1sts. Our Junior teams set the tone for the day playing some fantastic team Basketball and taking the points in the A and B matches, our C team going down narrowly on the buzzer.

It was a really welcome return for so many basketballers playing back in Dunnet Hall for the first time since they’d moved on from Junior School. Despite going down in a tough match against Central Coast, our 1sts Boys showed the Junior School crowd a brand of fighting athleticism which had them pushing their fancied opponents for a large portion of the match.

Despite going down by just three points, our Girls 1sts showed their skills and fight in spades. Both teams were tremendous role models to our Junior students, displaying sportsmanship, fair play and it was obvious to the whole crowd, the hard work and dedication they have put into their game to play at that level. They are certainly players to aspire to for our young basketballers.

Thanks to everyone who made it down to support both teams. The atmosphere in Dunnet Hall was nothing short of electric.

Our Yr 3 and 4 basketballers are really starting to hit their straps too, piling on points last weekend and coming away with two hard fought wins at Newington.

Match times and venues  for the Yr 3/4 teams have changed this weekend. All matches are now at Trinity Strathfield – Llandilo Avenue, Strathfield. D at 7.30am, C at 8.15am, B at 9.00am, A at 9.45am.

Cricket

Our cricketers faced a stern test after their measured win the week prior and had a tough match against an exceptionally talented Trinity team. Our team were restricted to a low total after bravely facing up to three of the quickest pace bowlers they’d seen this summer, but the fight was still there. They take on Mosman Prep this week in a chance to reset their season.

Indoor Hockey

Redlands Hockey Girls had an amazing experience at the State Indoor Hockey championships. Jess van Extel (along with Eloise Trueman and Freya Gait in Yr 7) played for Northern Sydney and Beaches in Div 2 and won three of their four pool games, beating Dubbo, Goulburn and Southern Highlands. They lost a hard fought Semi Final to Sydney South but played with impressive determination. Lauren Hill was also competing as a friendship player for Metro South West Sydney.

Photos

We love photos and showing off your great action shots from Sports fixtures on Saturday. If anyone has any pics or takes any, I love to use them to showcase our current teams and past teams on the rolling display in Dunnet Hall. Please send me the pics, or a link or even pop them in on a USB (it will be returned) to the Sports Office or email them to acarter@redlands.nsw.edu.au.
