Community Fun
To mark the excitement of being back on campus, and being together once more as a community, in real life, our new 2022 Student Leaders organised celebratory Zooper Doopers last Friday afternoon. It was a very hot day and as Yr 7 and 10 exited the school, they grabbed an ice-block (or two). There were plenty left over, so I imagine this won’t be the last time we do Zooper Dooper Friday, and Yr 8 and 9 will also be able to join in.

It was lovely to welcome Yr 8 and 9 back this week, after their Online Assessment Block. Week 5 has given all students the opportunity to settle back into the normal rhythms of school life, review assessment results and begin to evaluate personal strengths and areas for future growth. For most students this will be the focus again next week, before we embark on a series of engagement activities in the countdown to the end of the year.
Feedback Fundamentals
Feedback is fundamental to growth and this week all members of the community have been benefiting from feedback. In addition to students receiving feedback from teachers about their recent assessment experiences, the Student Voice Surveys were released to teachers this week, providing them with direct feedback about their teaching practice from the students they currently teach.
‘When teachers seek, or at least are open to, feedback from students as to what students know, what they understand, where they make errors, when they have misconceptions, when they are not engaged – then teaching and learning can be synchronised and powerful’. (John Hattie, 2009)
Personally, I have found the Student Voice data incredibly helpful in enabling me to pinpoint specific areas for my own improvement. Overwhelmingly my Yr 7 students identified that I could give them more time at the end of lessons to summarise what they have learned. I love knowing this, as it supports me to better plan and to understand how I can support my students’ learning. This data has also prompted some insightful conversations with colleagues this week. When I have shared with them that this is an area of development for me, they have offered their strategies, or shared their own personal areas for improvement. It’s wonderful to be having such rich conversations with colleagues at the end of a busy year.
Our students should also be having these conversations with their teachers, each other and you, as parents. Setting future goals requires students to consider alternate or developed strategies to achieve these goals. If you are engaging in this process at home, with your teenager, then here are some questions to support the process of review and reflection.
- What helps you to learn the most?
- What helps you to concentrate in class?
- What do you really want to make progress with this/next year?
- How do you know when you’ve made progress?
- What could I do to help you learn more?
- What could you do to help yourself learn more?
One thing we know about student-teacher feedback conversations is that initial responses from students can often be superficial. It is important to keep probing with subsequent questions until rich data is generated from which to set future goals and strategies.
If questions have surfaced from the recent assessment period, please encourage your teen to reach out to their teacher for clarification and support. We are happy to schedule a Zoom meeting with you and your teenager to unpack the feedback and support a rich and effective goal setting process. Given that all members of the community are currently engaged in giving and receiving feedback, it is important to remember the power of communication. Talking about what the data shows, exploring the feedback, asking questions and taking time to reflect is fundamental to progressive learning and growth.
Communicating your child’s absence with the Secondary School Office
Please be specific if your child is unwell. When emailing to inform us of a student absence, please clearly outline your child’s symptoms. If you tell us that your child is ‘unwell’, with no explanation of symptoms, we will assume a Covid-19 test is required. Additionally, we kindly ask that you are vigilant about sharing the negative Covid-19 test with ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au before your child is returned to school. Unfortunately, if this does not happen, parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child from school. Our priority is our community’s safety and our capacity to enable our Yr 12 students to sit their examinations. Currently we have students sitting IB examinations and from next Tuesday, the HSC examinations begin. We sincerely appreciate the cooperation of parents in following safe practices as we move through this next stage of the pandemic.
Are you a Yr 12 Parent? Would you like to better understand English Assessment for the HSC and IB? Join us for an informative webinar on November 10 at 6.00pm. Please join us via a Zoom Webinar.
Waste Free Wednesday – Call to Earth!

On Wednesday 10 November, it is Call to Earth Day! On Call to Earth Day, we are all encouraged to learn more about the threats facing our planet, people who are working to protect it and the steps we can all take to aid the cause.
On this day, we will be holding a ‘Waste Free Wednesday’, so all staff and students are encouraged to minimise their waste on this day. No plastic, no bags, no paper. Lunch boxes are acceptable! Hopefully, as a community, we can identify the significant amount of waste we create in just one day, and gain a deeper understanding of what methods and swaps we can make to reduce this amount. Parents, you are encouraged to support your child/ren on this day and our Yr 12 Student Leaders will be advocating for zero-waste over the coming days.
