Road Safety Matters
You will be aware that from time to time, there is cause for me to remind all of our community about the importance of road safety around our school and the clear message about choosing safety over convenience. I always do so unapologetically as my primary concern is the safety of your children. In particular, please can I draw your attention not to double park anyway around the Campus including Allister St, Murdoch St, Cranbrook Ave and Hampden Ave, where both parents and local residents have seen concerning traffic situations and potential for accidents. In addition, please be mindful of driving slowly and carefully around our School and abiding by the laws of the road.
Yr 6 Legacy Fair
Next Friday 13 November, our Yr 6 will host the annual Legacy Fair. This annual event has been a wonderful way in which the Yr 6 cohort combine to organise a range of fun activities for the rest of the Junior School to enjoy and funds raised help towards a legacy gift from the group to the Junior Campus. The main ideas that the students are considering are an indoor green feature wall in the atrium and a time capsule that they will fill with artefacts and information to capture the unique year of 2020 to be opened in 2050!
Due to current restrictions, the Fair will be run slightly differently with allocated times for each Year Group to attend but will still be an exciting morning for our Yr 6 students who take ownership of the organisation and running of stalls and activities.
It will also be a mufti day for a gold coin donation and all stalls and treats will require a gold coin donation too. To limit the handling of money, our preference is for gold coins rather than notes and students interested in taking part should bring between $5-$10 in gold coins.
Parent Webinar Link
It was great to be involved in this week’s Parent Webinar and I hope that the many parents from across the School found the session to be informative. The webinar was recorded and for those parents who didn’t have an opportunity to hear from our Principal and Heads of Section on Tuesday evening, it can be viewed here.

Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads
Congratulations to all of our students who were involved in this year’s Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads, which provides students with rich problem solving skills and exposes them to the application of mathematical problem solving strategies and techniques.
Once again, many of our Junior School students took part in these challenges and Mrs Ling has noted the following students for mention.

2021 Student Leadership Nominations
This week, our Yr 6, 2021 student leadership nominations commenced for our current Yr 5 cohort, ahead of their transition into Yr 6 and the Junior School student leadership roles that come with this move. I am grateful to Mr Brakell and his team for the meticulous planning and organisation of the morning, which it was a pleasure to be part of.
With candidates encouraging and supporting one another, I was both heartened and proud to hear that more than 82% of the cohort self-nominated for at least one of the 14 leadership positions (listed below); a reflection of the safe, encouraging and supportive environment created by the Yr 5 teachers and the group as a whole.
- Junior School Captains (one boy and one girl)
- Arts Captains (one boy and one girl)
- Sports Captains (one boy and one girl)
- House Captains (one boy and one girl per House – 8 in total)
As part of the process, students articulately heard from some of the present Junior School student leaders who articulately and passionately shared their experiences as well as another student in Yr 6, James Foley, who has shown great leadership this year without necessarily having a badge; an important message for all students to hear too. Yr 5 also had a chance to ask them questions, which was clearly a helpful exercise.
Cameron Brown from Explore, Discover Act, who has led student leadership development workshops with Yr 5 over the year, also sent a video to the group summarising the learning he has done with them throughout the year on leadership and wished them well on the next step in their leadership journey.
The Yr 5 teachers then provided the students with more specific information about the requirements of each role and the School’s expectations of its leaders. Looking around at the students, we have no shortage of potential school leaders who I know would be very capable representatives of the student body in 2021. Yr 5 students, as well as teachers who know them, will have the opportunity to vote and then these Captains will be formally announced for the first time at Speech Day on the last day of this term by Mr Webber and me.
Student Representative Council (SRC) Initiatives
Our SRC group comprises of a girl and boy from every Junior School class and work together with the School Captains to help provide an important conduit for student voice to be heard. This term, the group have agreed upon two primary initiatives for our students to get behind. The first is the perennial challenge of lost property and the lost property challenge has been created to help remind students to take personal responsibility for their items and to reward the most successful classes. In order to incentivise this challenge, the classes with the least amount of lost property will win prizes.
The SRC’s second initiative is for each class to gather a donation box for those less fortunate. The Sydney Morning Herald recently reported that homelessness is set to rise as COVID-19 income protection measures are scaled back. Before the pandemic about 290,000 people sought homeless services in Sydney. The SRC felt strongly that they wanted to do something to give back to the community and to offer support to people experiencing homelessness. In order to help, students have come up with the idea of creating class donation boxes. Junior School students have been invited to bring in things like non-perishable food, toothbrushes, toothpaste, band aids, shampoo, soap, first aid items, sunscreen or any other relevant items. These items will be donated to Anglicare and will benefit families who are experiencing homelessness. This project is one of many ways that students are encouraged to live our Redlands School Values and promote their active contribution to society.
Thank you, in advance, to parents and carers for your support of these Semester 2 SRC initiatives.
Meet the Musician
Last Thursday, our Yrs 4 and 5 students enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to be part of our MIP ‘Meet the Musician’ incursion in the John Roberts Centre on our Senior Campus. Mrs Richardson commented that if the students’ collective ‘oohs’ and ‘aahhs’ at Sandy Sin’s prowess across the full spectrum of orchestral percussion instruments were anything to go by, (not to mention the shrieks of “I don’t want it to end!” ), I would say the outing was a marvellous success!
Kids Giving Back
I was moved to receive an email from Robyn Miller, CEO Kids Giving Back, sharing how a number of our Junior School students and their families have spent time at weekends and in school holidays to help others through this organisation.
Kids Giving Back is a charity that provides meaningful, hands on experiences for children and young people to give back to others. Through charity partners, they arrange opportunities for children to provide assistance and support via preparation of meals for the homeless, packing of care packs and creating resources, as well as packing and delivering hampers for people experiencing food scarcity.
In a year like we have experienced, this opportunity for some of our students to assist in this way will have had significant mental and physical health benefits for many people and Ms Miller mentioned that our students were all enthusiastic and keen to not just participate in the activity but also to learn more about the cause they were supporting.
It was a joy for me to surprise them by acknowledging these students in assembly and I will ask them to take a moment to share their stories with the rest of the students in due course.
Thank you for showing such compassion and responsibility: Amelie Cadman (Yr 2), Luka Gordon (Yr 6), Sasha Gordon (Yr 3), Charlie Hutchings (Yr 3), Jack Hutchings (Yr 6), Zoe McKeown (Yr 5), Josh Svensson (Yr 4) and Millie Svensson (Yr 2).
Baby News
We were delighted to hear of the safe arrival of a baby boy, a first child for Yr 4 teacher, Mr Matthew Morrison. The family are all doing very well and enjoying this precious time together and as Class 4 Red families are already aware, we are delighted that Mrs Stacey Clarkson will take the class for the next two weeks ahead of her full time return from maternity leave in 2021.
