Second Hand Book Sale

Towards the end of Term 4, the RPFA is going to facilitate the sale of second hand textbooks in the Secondary School. The aim of this is to reduce landfill and waste for our textbooks once we have completed our academic year, and to ease the financial burden on families as they organise textbooks needed for 2021. Students will be able to buy and sell books – more information will be shared over the coming weeks; we know many of you are still using them to study for exams right now!

Walks on Tracks

We will be walking from Spit to Manly next Wednesday 11 November from 8.40am. Meet at Orso carpark. For more information, please contact Ann Marie Kimber on 0406691533 or amkimber@gmail.com.

Book Club

Our next Book Club will be held on Friday 4 December to discuss Kate Grenville’s A Room Made of Leaves – a fictional account of our early colonial days featuring Elizabeth Macarthur. Please contact Lerida Grant for more details on lerida@bigpond.net.au.

Road Safety Matters

You will be aware that from time to time, there is cause for me to remind all of our community about the importance of road safety around our school and the clear message about choosing safety over convenience. I always do so unapologetically as my primary concern is the safety of your children. In particular, please can I draw your attention not to double park anyway around the Campus including Allister St, Murdoch St, Cranbrook Ave and Hampden Ave, where both parents and local residents have seen concerning traffic situations and potential for accidents. In addition, please be mindful of driving slowly and carefully around our School and abiding by the laws of the road.

Yr 6 Legacy Fair

Next Friday 13 November, our Yr 6 will host the annual Legacy Fair. This annual event has been a wonderful way in which the Yr 6 cohort combine to organise a range of fun activities for the rest of the Junior School to enjoy and funds raised help towards a legacy gift from the group to the Junior Campus. The main ideas that the students are considering are an indoor green feature wall in the atrium and a time capsule that they will fill with artefacts and information to capture the unique year of 2020 to be opened in 2050!

Due to current restrictions, the Fair will be run slightly differently with allocated times for each Year Group to attend but will still be an exciting morning for our Yr 6 students who take ownership of the organisation and running of stalls and activities.

It will also be a mufti day for a gold coin donation and all stalls and treats will require a gold coin donation too. To limit the handling of money, our preference is for gold coins rather than notes and students interested in taking part should bring between $5-$10 in gold coins.

Parent Webinar Link

It was great to be involved in this week’s Parent Webinar and I hope that the many parents from across the School found the session to be informative. The webinar was recorded and for those parents who didn’t have an opportunity to hear from our Principal and Heads of Section on Tuesday evening, it can be viewed here

2021 Student Leadership Nominations

This week, our Yr 6, 2021 student leadership nominations commenced for our current Yr 5 cohort, ahead of their transition into Yr 6 and the Junior School student leadership roles that come with this move. I am grateful to Mr Brakell and his team for the meticulous planning and organisation of the morning, which it was a pleasure to be part of.

With candidates encouraging and supporting one another, I was both heartened and proud to hear that more than 82% of the cohort self-nominated for at least one of the 14 leadership positions (listed below); a reflection of the safe, encouraging and supportive environment created by the Yr 5 teachers and the group as a whole.

  • Junior School Captains (one boy and one girl)
  • Arts Captains (one boy and one girl)
  • Sports Captains (one boy and one girl)
  • House Captains (one boy and one girl per House – 8 in total)

As part of the process, students articulately heard from some of the present Junior School student leaders who articulately and passionately shared their experiences as well as another student in Yr 6, James Foley, who has shown great leadership this year without necessarily having a badge; an important message for all students to hear too. Yr 5 also had a chance to ask them questions, which was clearly a helpful exercise.

Cameron Brown from Explore, Discover Act, who has led student leadership development workshops with Yr 5 over the year, also sent a video to the group summarising the learning he has done with them throughout the year on leadership and wished them well on the next step in their leadership journey.

The Yr 5 teachers then provided the students with more specific information about the requirements of each role and the School’s expectations of its leaders. Looking around at the students, we have no shortage of potential school leaders who I know would be very capable representatives of the student body in 2021. Yr 5 students, as well as teachers who know them, will have the opportunity to vote and then these Captains will be formally announced for the first time at Speech Day on the last day of this term by Mr Webber and me.

Student Representative Council (SRC) Initiatives

Our SRC group comprises of a girl and boy from every Junior School class and work together with the School Captains to help provide an important conduit for student voice to be heard. This term, the group have agreed upon two primary initiatives for our students to get behind. The first is the perennial challenge of lost property and the lost property challenge has been created to help remind students to take personal responsibility for their items and to reward the most successful classes. In order to incentivise this challenge, the classes with the least amount of lost property will win prizes.

The SRC’s second initiative is for each class to gather a donation box for those less fortunate. The Sydney Morning Herald recently reported that homelessness is set to rise as COVID-19 income protection measures are scaled back. Before the pandemic about 290,000 people sought homeless services in Sydney. The SRC felt strongly that they wanted to do something to give back to the community and to offer support to people experiencing homelessness. In order to help, students have come up with the idea of creating class donation boxes. Junior School students have been invited to bring in things like non-perishable food, toothbrushes, toothpaste, band aids, shampoo, soap, first aid items, sunscreen or any other relevant items. These items will be donated to Anglicare and will benefit families who are experiencing homelessness. This project is one of many ways that students are encouraged to live our Redlands School Values and promote their active contribution to society.

Thank you, in advance, to parents and carers for your support of these Semester 2 SRC initiatives.

Meet the Musician

Last Thursday, our Yrs 4 and 5 students enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to be part of our MIP ‘Meet the Musician’ incursion in the John Roberts Centre on our Senior Campus. Mrs Richardson commented that if the students’ collective ‘oohs’ and ‘aahhs’ at Sandy Sin’s prowess across the full spectrum of orchestral percussion instruments were anything to go by, (not to mention the shrieks of “I don’t want it to end!), I would say the outing was a marvellous success!

Kids Giving Back

I was moved to receive an email from Robyn Miller, CEO Kids Giving Back, sharing how a number of our Junior School students and their families have spent time at weekends and in school holidays to help others through this organisation.

Kids Giving Back is a charity that provides meaningful, hands on experiences for children and young people to give back to others. Through charity partners, they arrange opportunities for children to provide assistance and support via preparation of meals for the homeless, packing of care packs and creating resources, as well as packing and delivering hampers for people experiencing food scarcity.

In a year like we have experienced, this opportunity for some of our students to assist in this way will have had significant mental and physical health benefits for many people and Ms Miller mentioned that our students were all enthusiastic and keen to not just participate in the activity but also to learn more about the cause they were supporting.

It was a joy for me to surprise them by acknowledging these students in assembly and I will ask them to take a moment to share their stories with the rest of the students in due course.

Thank you for showing such compassion and responsibility: Amelie Cadman (Yr 2), Luka Gordon (Yr 6), Sasha Gordon (Yr 3), Charlie Hutchings (Yr 3), Jack Hutchings (Yr 6), Zoe McKeown (Yr 5), Josh Svensson (Yr 4) and Millie Svensson (Yr 2).

Baby News

We were delighted to hear of the safe arrival of a baby boy, a first child for Yr 4 teacher, Mr Matthew Morrison. The family are all doing very well and enjoying this precious time together and as Class 4 Red families are already aware, we are delighted that Mrs Stacey Clarkson will take the class for the next two weeks ahead of her full time return from maternity leave in 2021.

From the Principal

I enjoyed the opportunity on Tuesday evening through our Parent Webinar to provide an update to parents and carers on the feedback from our Redlands Community Survey, conducted during August and September this year. Thank you to all who participated in the survey; in total we received more than 500 responses from parents and carers, staff, alumni, directors, members and students.

Set out below are some common observations from the survey results:

  • The Redlands community is welcoming and inclusive;
  • The School’s Vision and our Motto of “Let your light shine” is strongly supported and while there is always room to improve, the community observes Redlands students aspire to that;
  • The depth and breadth of the Redlands cocurricular program is critical to providing the opportunities for students to explore their own pathways;
  • Balancing a desire for strong academic performance with an external environment that is challenging to the mental wellbeing of students and staff will likely be a key challenge for Redlands over the coming five years.

Looking ahead, the survey participants believed that the most important elements for success over the coming five year period are:

  • to focus even more on enabling and improving the individual holistic development and wellbeing of the students (Life-ready at every stage)
  • the academic development and success of students through our contemporary and innovative education practices (Academic and Agile)

In addition, a focus for the coming years will also be to refine Redlands own measurement and tracking of the short and long-term holistic success of our students. We have already made good progress in this area through our current Data Tracking project.

The feedback provided by the survey has proven invaluable in our strategic planning sessions and we are looking forward to finalising strategies and actions early in 2021. I will keep the community informed on our progress and the outcomes.

If you didn’t have an opportunity to participate in the Parent Webinar, you can view it here.

Head of Secondary School

Parent Webinar

It was wonderful to connect with many of you in our Parent Webinar on Tuesday evening. We realise that while Redlands students and staff are back to pretty “normal” schooling, our parent community in many ways still feels disconnected from school this year as we are still unable to have parents on campus and in person for many events. Our strength is our community so we know this inability to be present in person is a loss for many parents. We hope that events like this parent webinar help to continue to keep this relationship strong (even if remotely) and allow for continued open communication between school and home. If you were unable to attend the parent webinar, you can access the recording here.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Secondary School Parent Contact Group for their continued efforts in support of the School. I have appreciated being able to have open communication with them throughout this year and over the past four years so that I can hear questions and concerns from the parent community while sharing important information from the School, as well.

Sports Update

While we know there are still restrictions for parents and staff to attend some sporting events, I was pleased to be able to watch many of our Boys Basketball teams play against St Andrew’s at Sydney University last Saturday. I was impressed by the overall attitude, effort and quality of play across the teams and age groups and it was certainly the highest standard of Basketball I have seen across the boys’ program in my four years in the Secondary School. The 1sts Boys Basketball team played well against a competitive St Andrew’s team, running out 79-67 winners in an entertaining game.

Canteen Update

As you have been made aware, we have commenced online ordering in the Secondary School Canteen this year and we are strongly encouraging students to use this system for purchasing food in the Canteen for the remainder of this term. There is a much more extensive menu through the online ordering system and by using online ordering, students will ensure that their order is waiting for them at the beginning of Recess or Lunch and will not have to worry about availability of food items once they arrive to the Canteen.

From the beginning of Term 1 2021, we will be moving to a more complete pre-order system in the Secondary School. This will mean that if students want to purchase a hot or pre-prepared meal for Recess or Lunch, they will have to use the online purchasing system, Flexischools. While there will still be some snacks available for students to purchase in person at Recess and Lunch, the majority of meals will only be available for students to pre-order via Flexischools. This arrangement will allow for a more extensive menu for students to choose from; certainty for students that meals will be available for them to pick up in the Canteen; and less wastage of food in the Canteen. Many parents would be currently using this arrangement in the Junior School which has had positive feedback. Students can pre-order items from the Canteen through Flexischools using the app or website and parents and carers can create a Flexischools account for their family and link a credit card and student number to the account. Students can submit orders up until 8.30am to ensure they are available for them to pick up at Recess or Lunch. We would encourage all students and parents to create an account and start using Flexischools this term to ensure they are fully prepared for this change next year. More details regarding online Canteen ordering are available on Redlands Pulse

Drop Off and Pick Up

We appreciate the challenges of parking, as well as the drop off and pick up of students, around the Senior Campus, and thank the majority of parents who follow proper guidelines. However, we have had recent reports of some unsafe practices during drop off and pick up of students around the Campus before or after school. Once again, we ask parents to use the designated drop off and pick up zones on Waters Road and Winnie Street and not to double park in local streets, pull into the bus parking lot in front of the Adams Centre or do three point turns on Hampden Avenue. The safety of our students, members of our community and members of the wider community is paramount.

And lastly, please may I remind you to be respectful and considerate of our neighbours. It is not acceptable to block or even park in someone’s driveway. Please also be mindful of noise on local streets, especially during early morning drop offs for before school activities or evening pick ups. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation and support.

Music Soirees

Over the past few weeks Music Soirees have taken place for our elective Music students in Yrs 8-10. As many of you are well aware, Music has been one of our cocurricular areas most affected and disrupted by the COVID-19 restrictions we have had to follow as a school this year. That is why it was wonderful to see and hear our Music Department “pivot” (yes, an overused word this year) and alter the arrangements for these Music Soirees so that students were still able to perform live in the Edwards Auditorium while parents, staff and other students could view these performances remotely. It was great to be able to “drop in” online and hear and see some of our elective Music students perform. I would like to extend a huge thank you to the many people who made these Music Soirees possible: Mr Kuilenberg and the Music teachers; our Music tutors and their exceptional accompaniments; the production, IT and AV staff for all of their set up; and of course our Music students for their flexibility throughout this year and for still sharing their joy of music-making with us.

Year 11

Camp

As you would be aware, the Yr 11 Camp has been rescheduled for Week 2 of Term 1, 2021, departing Redlands on Monday 1 February for our High Country Campus at Jindabyne and returning to school on Friday 5 February. Further details surrounding activities, equipment and arrangements will be distributed to students and parents over the coming weeks. We look forward to having the entire Year Group together for this important final camp, and to participate in the celebrations that occur as part of it.

Yr 12 2021 Legacy Gift

Our Service Captains Laura Sidoti and Harrison Winton, together with Chloe Stewart, are working with our Year Group to initiate ideas and interest for the Yr 12 2021 Legacy Gift. In the tradition of Redlanders before them, our Year Group will fundraise for the Legacy Gift and this year contributions will support Dr Lennox’s wonderful legacy, the Peter Lennox Scholarship Fund as well as a gift for the students of Redlands. It is hoped that students and families will get behind this initiative to ensure that a child from a family who would otherwise be unable to attend the School can benefit from Dr Lennox’s legacy.

Peer Support Training

Yr 11 students who have been Peer Support Leaders this year will be taking part in training for our current Yr 10 students stepping into this role. There will be a brief meeting for all these students at lunchtime on Thursday 12 November and the training will take place on Monday 16 November from Period 1 until Period 3. All current Peer Support Leaders and Peer Support Captains are expected to take part and should check their email for further details.

How to Email a Teacher

This week, students completed a lesson in email etiquette, especially focusing on how to email their teachers. This information is also relevant for students as they begin to apply for jobs and for any upcoming university and college applications.

Wellbeing Tip

As students begin their Yr 12 studies, it is important to remember that they should be taking time each day for some self-care. Getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, regular exercise, positive self-talk and engaging in hobbies they enjoy are all things that are important for a successful final year of high school.

Year 10

Camp

We are very excited that the Yr 10 Camp is going ahead next week. The location we are going to is the beautiful Myall Lakes where the students will be camping around the lake in various locations and enjoying the outdoor life and fun activities. I have spoken to the students this week about the importance of the camp on their mental and physical wellbeing. We understand that some students may be apprehensive about camp, but we appreciate your support in encouraging your children to have a positive attitude, as I am sure they will look back on the experience with fond memories. Please contact David Gregory, Head of Outdoor Education, if you have any questions about the logistics of the camp. Information has been sent to parents and most have completed the required documentation. If you are still yet to give permission on Redlands Pulse, we ask that you do so as a matter of urgency. We will be putting together a folder of photos from the week and sharing this with your children at the end of the week, so you will be able to see what an amazing time they had.

Peer Support

In Week 6, Yr 10 will all be participating in a Peer Support training day, where Yr 11 students will provide information and training to the Yr 10s for the role of Peer Support to Yr 7 students 2021. After the training, all Yr 10 students will be given the opportunity to sign up to become a Peer Support leader where they will be involved in helping Yr 7 students settle into Redlands next year in a number of activities throughout the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for students who are keen on leadership roles as they enter their senior years.

Year 9

Yr 9 Yearly Examinations

It has been insightful to see the amount of positivity our Yr 9s have shown this week as they undertake their Yearly Exams. Ms Eleanor Martin and I have reminded students at the start of each day that they just need to do the best they can along with emphasising the importance of sleep and mindfulness during exam time.

Over the next fortnight, Yr 9 will receive their Yearly Examination marks back. There will be many highs and lows when exams are returned, but please remind your child that exams give them the opportunity to improve through receiving constructive feedback from teachers. This summary sheet from the Study Skills Handbook is a great tool for Yr 9 to use as it gives students the opportunity to look at exam feedback questions which they can use to communicate with their teachers, along with questions that they can use to evaluate their exam writing skills and areas of concern.

Burn Bright

Next Wednesday 11 November, Yr 9 students will be attending an incursion with Burn Bright, which is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers meaningful and dynamic student leadership and wellbeing programs Australia-wide. Girls will attend the Spark program while boys attend the Ignite program, before joining together as a whole Year Group in the afternoon.

This day forms a core part of the Yr 9 Pastoral Program, with students enjoying a range of sessions focused around issues such as identity and self-worth, personal values, self-expression and resilience.

Students are permitted to wear sports uniform on the day and must bring their own pen for use during the sessions. They will break for normal recess and lunchtimes at school.

Yr 9 Music Soiree

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Yr 9 Elective Music Soiree. All the musical items were impressive, showcasing a range of vocal and instrumental talent. It was inspiring to see many of our Yr 9s move beyond their comfort zones to perform their musical items. Ms Martin and I were moved by the amount of talent in Yr 9 and all participants should be very proud of their performances.

Australian Mathematics Competition

Students are halfway through their Yr 8 Examinations. Students are taking this week seriously and many are seeing it as a chance to highlight their accomplishments and show what they have learned throughout the year. We are very proud of the way Yr 8 students are conducting themselves this week and we look forward to a well-deserved and well-timed break at camp next week.

Camp Briefing

Camp is a rich experience for students and a fantastic balance of challenge and finding ‘green time’ toward the end of this busy and unique year. Yr 8 Camp is combination of outdoor and high energy activities and personal reflection time.

Students participated in a camp briefing on Wednesday and were able to ask specific questions to help clarify their expectations and concerns around camp.  A few final reminders are:

  • Students are to be in Dunnet Hall on Allister Street at 6.00am on Monday morning as busses depart at 6.30am.
  • Students are not to bring electronics on the bus or to camp. Students may bring a disposable camera and an analog watch (no smart watches).
  • Students are encoraged to bring insect repelant in lotion form (not aerosol).
  • All other camp information can be found at https://www.oeg.edu.au/.  Login: Redlands, Password: Shine

Study Tips and Recommendations for Yr 9 Preparation from Dr Prue Salter

When a student says that they have a bad memory, it usually means that actually they do not encode the information they are trying to remember into their memory in an effective way.

Memory is really a ‘process’ as opposed to a ‘thing’ in your head that you are born with. Rather than ‘improving your memory’, you want to improve the process of memory creation to ensure memory retrieval goes smoothly! The reason why many students do not retain what they are learning is that the way they study only gets the information as far as their short term memory, and then before long it is forgotten instead of being encoded into long term memory.

The first stage for students in improving their retention of information is to try and find ways to make what they are learning interesting to themselves, emotionable, enjoyable and if they can’t do this then at least create the firm intention to remember the information. It is all about their approach to what they are learning.

The next step in memory creation is the encoding process. To improve in this area, students need to improve:

  • Concentration and focus (making notes about what they are learning, studying using techniques that suit their learning style, studying when they are most alert)
  • Organisation of material (making brain friendly notes: lists, highlighting, categories, grouping, graphics)
  • Making associations and links between the new material and previously learned material.

Next stage in the memory process is facilitating the storage of memories. Students can improve the way memories are stored by ensuring they break their study blocks up with at least a few minutes break every half hour (giving the brain a chance to encode and file that chunk of content) and chunk down the information to be learnt into manageable chunks.  Getting enough sleep is also essential as fundamental memory processes take place during sleep. The other thing that is really important in this stage is repetition and regular review. Each time a review takes place the brain fires all the neurons connected to that memory and the more often that happens the stronger the connections between the neurons and the more intense and powerful the memory that is created.

So in summary, the top three things to improve the process of creating powerful memories are:

  1. focus, positive attitude and intention to remember are essential (reading something half-heartedly while bored pretty much guarantees it won’t be retained)
  2. an active approach to learning where students  are ‘doing’ (making notes, testing themselves using a wide range of study techniques) rather than just ‘reading’
  3. repetition and constant review of the material over a period of time.

Burn Bright It’s in our DNA – Exploring Friendships, Passions and Integrity

10 November, 8.20am-3.20pm, Redlands Hall

The early high school years are formative for friendships and are when students begin to explore their identity. This is an enormous period of change and it’s important that young people build a sense of connectedness with their peers and school community. It’s In Our DNA is our friendships and passions program that seeks to explore peer-to-peer relationships and the importance of finding and following what you are passionate about with those around you. It looks at the joys that quality and meaningful friendship brings, and provides strategies and ideas to navigate friendships during the school years. Burn Bright empowers students with the skills to enjoy friendships constructively and how to traverse them when they become tricky. We explore what passions are with students and how these can be a meaningful catalyst to find purpose, enjoyment, belonging and identity in their life.

Session 1 – Who Are You? What Makes You?

The first section explores our identity, who we are and what we believe in or stand for. We explore the importance of friendships, having a support crew, and thinking about others before we think about ourselves.

  • A series of team building challenges and activities with the aim of increasing connectedness and students getting to know themselves better.
  • Building positive, healthy and constructive relationships.
  • ‘Think WE Not ME’ – The power and importance of putting others first in our life.
  • The importance of having a support crew and developing a healthy support network.
  • Recognising my strengths and positive qualities and those of the people around you.

Session 2 – A Life Worth Getting Out of Bed For

The second section explores what it looks like to have a life worth getting out of bed for. We discover the power of passions, strengths and serving those around us.

  • Unlocking our passions and finding purpose and enjoyment.
  • Constructively resolving conflict in friendships and relationships.
  • Conquering apathy.
  • Serving others and caring for those around us.
  • Positive problem solving.
  • Developing a set of values for my life.
  • Communicating effectively and responsibly – online and offline.
  • Self-identity, value and worth.
  • Unpacking the choices we make and consequences of these on our lives.

Session 3 – Success! It’s In Our DNA

The final section explores some key qualities for a successful time at school and the rest of our lives. We unpack resilience, motivation, attitude and personal reflection.

Australian Mathematics Competition Results (AMC)

Congratulations to all participants in this international competition involving hundreds of thousands of students from around 30 countries throughout the Pacific and South East Asia. Held over a week beginning in late July, the Competition tests everything from basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem solving.

This year we would like to particularly acknowledge the following wonderful Yr 7 student achievements:

High Distinction: Jessica Lee, Daniel Borness
Distinction: Iona Gait, Michael Havryk, Remy Pascoe, Liam Petersen and Sophie Yu

Visual Arts News

Students were encouraged to find an imaginative setting and try to make three or more figures interact in a creative way. There were some exceptional works of art and students are to be commended on their submissions.

Growing Up So Fast!

Our Transition Gold class has had an impressive week sharing their learning inside and outside of the classroom. Every time I enter the TG room I am greeted with smiles, stories and young voices in the throws of discussing and exploring. This week I reflected on just how grown up these students have become in such a short period of time. They say goodbye to their parents at the Reception door, have temperatures taken and walk through to put bags away and get themselves ready for the day. They are so ready for Kindergarten. The information board this week is all about TG and the wonderings they have explored around fairy tales. From stick figure nurturing to a look, see, wonder about maths, there is always quality learning experiences happening in TG.

December 2020 and January 2021 Vacation Care

If you would like your child to attend the December/January Vacation Care program, please visit Redlands Pulse to preview the activity plan from Monday 9 November. The Flexischools website will be open on Monday 16 November at 12.00pm to make any bookings. Please use the Prep and Junior Vacation Care icon. If you have any Vacation Care or After School Care queries you can contact the OOSH K- 6 Coordinator, Trinetta Newbond on 0413 764 443.

Car Parking Around the Junior Campus

I would like to thank all those parents who have helped make car line run smoothly this term. Your smiles and waves are so appreciated every morning.

Can I please ask that Kindergarten parents do not start arriving at car line in the afternoons until 2.30pm. We do have parents arriving too early and this is causing issues with our Redlands House parents who pick their children up earlier. Please know that we will never close the gate if a student is not picked up in time. Our staff will always be safely waiting with your child until you arrive.

Parents are asked to avoid double parking in Murdoch and Allister Streets while waiting to pick up their children. It has come to the School’s attention that some parents are stopping in the middle of the street to enter the car line in Allister Street. This is creating a traffic flow issue as well as creating an unsafe situation for cars trying to move up and down Allister Street. If you are turning right into Allister Street from Rangers Road and cannot join the car line, unfortunately you will need to go around the block and join the back of the line.

If you park in Murdoch Street, we ask you to check whether you are in a no stopping zone.

As always, the safety of our students is paramount as is the respect for the residents in the streets surrounding our school.

Thank you for your assistance with this again.

Has, Is and Will School Sport Continue to Change?

These three questions have plagued mine and many of my colleagues minds over the last few months. The uncertainty of this year has raised questions about our purpose and our roles as educators. As we have slowly followed the road map upon the return to competitive sport this term, I am struck to think what a year it has been in intra and interschool sport. From cancellations to adaptations, to modifications and even ‘pivotications’ (new word for 2020), sport has changed considerably throughout this year.

Through these changes, some fantastic opportunities and realisations about interschool sport have arisen. Generally, competition has become more welcoming and open in its structure to accommodate a greater diversity of circumstances and school contexts. This has yielded a deeper respect and appreciation for the need of students and schools to enjoy the privilege of simply playing sport as opposed to competing for division championships. This is not to say we don’t care about winning, more that school communities have become more aware of the beneficial role that sport plays in wellbeing and holistic education of children.

Although sport has changed, I wonder if sport is continuing to change and what it will look like in the future. As we near the end of the school year, we take stock of our programs and continue to review what worked well, what didn’t, and what we should change. It would seem more probable than not that the degree of safety and COVID measures currently taking place will continue in the short term of 2021. As schools continue to mitigate both the health and reputational risk to their communities, sport will retain some level of COVID restrictions in the short to medium term. But with this comes opportunity. We can continue to look at creative ways of filling draws and competitions to be more inclusive of schools in close proximity and outside of our traditional associated competitions. Coaches and staff will continue to build closer relationships with club programs to establish partnerships for both athlete development and facility management, as catchments for both have become smaller. From a long term perspective I am hopeful sport will continue to learn from this time and I wonder what changes we can view in future years. Will we see a rise of more e-sports? Will schools take up more local or internal school competitions in lieu of interschool competition? Will interschool competition have a limit of students and areas? Will schools partner with clubs to work closer on athlete development? Will associations work with each other to reduce travel? Will the purpose and focus of sport in education shift? School directors of sport often speak about what schools “rest their hat on”, meaning their school sport reputations. Often this is program specific, eg. Rugby programs, Netball programs and elite athlete programs. It would be interesting to see school sport shift its focus from program specific goals and reputations to one of character development and values driven success. This may seem idealistic to the over 200 years of school sport history. However, 2020 has been a year like no other and it is worth us all considering what it is we really want out of sport in our Schools.

Basketball

Round 2 was another exciting round with many close games.
Boys
Our As all played against St Andrew’s Cathedral School. The 1sts had a 79-67 win, while the 17As won 67-66 in overtime. The 15As continued their winning streak with 45-24 and the 14As had an impressive 62-32 win. The 13As put up a great fight but went down in a 36-19 loss. The B boys had some close match ups against the St Spyridon A teams. The 2nds had another solid win, while both the 17B and 14B teams finished the day with a draw. The 15Bs played a great game with a 4 point win and the 13B finished with a 5 point win. The Cs played against SACS Bs and finished with a mix of results. The 3rds finished with an easy win over SACS 2nds and the 17Cs had a tough game against a SACS team that was just too strong on the day. Both the 15C and 14Cs had extremely close games that just got away from them in the final minutes with both teams 5 points down at the final siren. The 13Cs also had a nail-biter, with both teams trading baskets throughout the game. Redlands managed to keep possession in the final seconds to finish with a 30-29 win in what was a very exciting game. The D teams were playing against Oakhill and the Senior Blue and Senior Gold finished with a loss and a win respectively. The 17Ds put up a great fight but were outplayed by some sharp shooting, as were the 14Ds. The 13Ds showed some improvement on Round 1 but were matched up this week against a strong Oakhill side.
Girls
The Girls Basketball program is going from strength to strength with some massive wins across the board. The 1sts had a huge 70 point win over St Spyridon, as did the Junior As. The Redlands 3 side carried on their great Round 1 form with another impressive win. Redlands 4 had their first win of the season, finishing their game against St Spyridon with a 10 point buffer. Redlands 5 played against SACS 3 and put up a great fight, but St Andrew’s had the upper hand throughout the match. The Junior Bs played against Barker Junior As and, although they finished with a loss, it was a fantastic effort against a very strong Barker side. The Junior Cs displayed some great passages of play and managed to record a win against St Spyridon.

Our 1sts have been assisting some of our coaches during their training sessions and it has been great to see our senior students share their knowledge of the game with some of the younger students within the program

Tennis

Unfortunately the 8.00am Tennis matches did not go ahead, however, we were fortunate to play the 10.00am matches. There was some excellent tennis being played with a number of teams only allowing their opponent a glimpse at winning a game. Other results were not a true reflection of how competitive the match was with many games going to deuce. It is always great to see the excellent sportsmanship of all Redlands Tennis students each week as they continue to improve their match play skills.

Just a friendly reminder, please aim to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled start time to ensure there is sufficient time for a warm up and matches can start on time, 8.00am and 10.00am. If students are sick or injured and cannot attend training please email Eliza Peirce. If students are sick and rostered to play on Saturday, please email Eliza Peirce before 12.00pm on the Friday to ensure a replacement can be found and all sets can be completed.

The COVID Safety Protocols for Tennis have not changed for Round 4, Saturday 7 November. The one spectator rule at all NSTA tennis venues remains in place. The Redlands COVID Sports Protocols can be found on Redlands Pulse. All wet weather updates can be found on twitter @RedlandsSport.

Touch Football

We are continuing to see great improvements throughout the Redlands Touch Football program, with a number of highlights throughout the weekends games. Unfortunately the 1st VI went down in a close match against St Andrew’s Cathedral 1sts 3-4, but the girls took a lot of lessons from this defeat and will be looking to bounce back this weekend against Barker College. The Snr 2 Girls had a huge victory against Barker College 2, in what was a see-sawing battle coming down to the last few minutes and the girls were able to take the game 4-3! Our Snr 3 team fought hard against Barker College 3 but unfortunately went down 1-3.

The Juniors are showing some great skills at the moment and, despite some games being a little one-sided, the girls are all enjoying their games. The Jnr As had a strong win against St Andrew’s Jnr As taking the match 11-1. The Jnr Cs also took on the St Andrew’s Jnr B team with a 7-1 victory. Our Jnr Bs unfortunately went down to a strong Jnr A Barker team. With the Jnr D and Jnr Es also going down to the Barker Jnr B team, both teams looking for some improvements this weekend.

A reminder regarding wet weather, please ensure you check your email and @RedlandsSport during the morning, if games are cancelled we will email and update Twitter as soon as possible.

Yr 4 and 5 MIP Incursion Percussion Extravaganza

Last Thursday, Yrs 4 and 5 students attended an incursion in the Edwards Auditorium on the Senior Campus, to learn more about Orchestral Percussion from our specialist teacher Ms Sandy Sin. This MIP learning experience titled ‘Meet The Musician’ is part of a broader series where students have the opportunity to learn about various instruments from exceptional pedagogues within the Music Department. Ms Sandy Sin’s prowess across the full spectrum of Orchestral Percussion was incredible.

“The Yrs 4 and 5 students’ collective ‘oohs’ and ‘aahhs’ when hearing the different colour across the full range of orchestral percussion, followed by shrieks of “I don’t want it to end” as the incursion finished, is reflective of the stimulating and engaging learning experience.” Mrs Amy Richardson

Music Elective Soirées

The Music Department would like to commend all musicians from Yrs 8, 9 and 10 Music Elective who presented repertoire for assessment at the Soirée Concerts throughout this past week. The students were very well prepared with their repertoire and confidently presented in front of peers in the Edwards Auditorium and to their parents via Zoom. Designed as a student led event, we commend classes on their developing skills as musicians as well as various other roles including compering, sound operation, lighting and stage management.

“The opportunities of working in a purpose-built performance facility like the Edwards Auditorium is certainly providing students with real life experiences in developing and delivering a polished high-quality music concert”. Mr Darren Kuilenburg

Thank you to our class teachers Ms Brodie, Mr Owen, Mr Kuilenburg, Mrs Richardson, Mrs Worthington for their wonderful guidance and mentoring of the students in performance classes throughout this year. Thanks are also extended to our exceptional accompanists Mr Li, Mr Idarraga, Mr Smith, Mr Wade, Mr Wooltorton and Mr Xu, who have mentored the students throughout the year.
