Issue 34 2018 - 08 Nov 2018

From the Principal

On Friday last week, Mr Guha and Mrs Fellowes hosted 70 Heads of Independent Primary Schools in NSW for their Term 4 professional learning session which was held in Dunnet Hall. During their visit to our Junior Campus, the Heads were very impressed with the warm welcome they received and with our beautiful Junior Campus facilities.

Tuesday this week was our annual Melbourne Cup Luncheon. I sincerely thank all of our parents and friends who attended this annual event as they raised over $25,000 for the New Learning Hub, in addition to enjoying a delicious lunch at the Sergeants Mess overlooking Sydney Harbour. Thank you also to our Foundation and Facilities teams who organised these two functions, with a special thank you to our Events Manager, Melanie Hendra.

I wish to advise that we anticipate that we will be in a position to provide an update regarding our Senior Campus redevelopment next week. As per the letter to parents in the first week of this term, we are currently reviewing several viable options in appointing a new contractor with our project managers, in order to minimise the impact on the project’s timeline. Further to this, please be assured that as per usual, our planned maintenance upgrades and internal improvement projects will proceed as planned over the Christmas holiday period.

We are about to undertake a Uniform Survey in which we are inviting parents to share their views about our uniform, including formal school uniform, PE uniform and sports uniforms, and about our Uniform Shop. The survey will be open until Monday 19 November and you can provide your responses by clicking this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/V2GHHJN

Reflection

This week students in Yrs 9 and 10 have been sitting their Yearly Examinations while students in Yrs 7 and 8 have begun to receive feedback on the examinations they sat last week. While the results will give students valuable feedback on their learning from this year, I believe the actual marks are not the most important aspect of examinations (despite what students may feel). While the preparation for examinations is important for students to develop the habits and approaches towards learning that are going to assist them in the future, I would argue that it is this period after the examinations that is in fact the most valuable time for students so that they can best develop their learning for the future.

Specifically, this is the time for honest, critical and thoughtful reflection. Honest and productive reflection can often be challenging for students because of their own insecurities. However, I would argue that this is one of the most important dispositions that will allow students to further develop a growth mindset and their life-readiness.

I have previously shared some of these questions below which I believe best assist students as they reflect on their learning. With Yrs 7-10 finishing their Yearly Examinations, I believe it is a good time to share these again.

  • How has my application, diligence and engagement in class been throughout this year? Have I maximised my use of class time for my learning? If not, what can I do differently next year?
  • How productively have I used my home learning time throughout this year? Are there strategies or approaches I could develop which would further assist my home learning? Are there distractions (television, music or social media) which are negatively affecting my home learning?
  • How effective was my preparation for assessments this year? Did I use my time wisely? Did I start my preparation early enough? Did I develop an effective study plan or revision timetable?
  • What revision approaches specifically work for me? For example, do I need to write out notes rather than just read them off the page or screen? Or do I learn better when I can collaborate with others as opposed to revise material individually?
  • Are there important skills or content areas that I need to review or revise further in preparation for my continued study of a subject?
  • How can I best develop a deeper understanding of a subject or topic instead of just a superficial knowledge?
  • What are some key goals or focus areas I should have in 2019 which are going to help to further assist and develop my learning for the future?

I would encourage all students to honestly reflect upon questions such as these, as well as others, and engage in these discussions with teachers, Tutors and parents over these next few weeks. In this way students will continue to foster a growth mindset and “own” their learning to that they can gain a stronger personal understanding of what works best for them in the future.

Speech Night

Wednesday 5 December is a pupil free day at the Secondary School; however, Speech Night is compulsory for all students in Yrs 7-11 that evening. Further details of student arrival times for rehearsals and the event itself will be published in Note Day and emailed to all Secondary School parents over the next few weeks. We look forward to our whole School community coming together on this special evening.

Remembrance Day

As most people are well aware, 11 November is a special day as we celebrate the centenary of the armistice which signalled the end of World War I. We will have a special Remembrance Day Assembly in the Secondary School on Tuesday 13 November to celebrate this occasion. In addition, this Sunday 11 November, there will be a service held at St Peter’s Anglican Church (29 Waters Rd, Cremorne) commencing at 8.30am. Various students and staff from Redlands will be assisting with this service and all members of our community are invited to attend.

Whooping Cough

We have been notified of a case of Whooping Cough in the Junior School with a student who has a sibling in the Secondary School. Please note we currently have no confirmed cases of Whooping Cough in the Secondary School. Please see the attached link for signs and symptoms: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/infectious/factsheets/pages/pertussis.aspx

Please remember to keep your child at home if they are unwell and are awaiting the results of any medical testing. If diagnosed with Whooping Cough they should remain at home until 5 full days of the prescribed antibiotic being given.

Chaplain

Across all curriculum areas, Redlands instils a culture of thinking. This encourages students to use their skills in thinking and learning from one subject area into another. In the Christian Studies classroom, this is actively encouraged. Currently Yr 8 has been reflecting on the way in which Science and Theology (the study of God) relate, integrate or dialogue. Students initially began the unit with perspectives that polarises these two ways of knowing; placing them as combative opposites. However, as they have been able to explore further, they begin to see that there is a far more dynamic interaction and complexity that may at first meet the eye.

This week the students have explored the basis of the Big Bang Theory. They looked at what the theory proposed and the evidence supporting this theory. Students considered the development of this theory in the early 1900s and which scientists were involved in this. In particular students looked at George Lemaitre’s contribution, who is considered the Father of the Big Bang Theory, who was also a theologian. With this, students investigated the constants of the universe (gravity, cosmological constant, etc) and the precision required for the existence of a life permitting universe. Students were challenged to think outside their original perspective. This saw students question and wonder the intricacies of our universe.

As I reflect on the wonders, discoveries and theories that science has brought us, I am delighted at the complexity of the world. I am also grateful for enquiring minds and erudite processes that have shaped much of our scientific endeavour. I am also delighted by the mind behind these wonders, the designer. I am humbled that in such a vast universe, God values each of us so much. I am reassured as God did not just set the universe in motion and forget us but has persistently intervened in history to reveal himself so we can know him. I am full of wonder as I realise that this creator, God, has himself become human at a set point of time in history, in a set place in the world.

Having just visited Israel and Jordan, I was fascinated at seeing the places that Jesus lived, which astounded me at the amount of archaeological support there is for the biblical accounts. However, that is all about the connection of History and Theology and needs to wait for another day.

Parents Who Pray

The final meeting to pray for our school community will be on Friday 23 November beginning at 8.30am on the Senior Campus room B.1.1. Please make note of this. Even if you have not attended before, if you would like to pray then you are welcome.

Service

Remembrance Day Service

On Tuesday we will be having our Secondary School Remembrance Day Service. At this time we offer our student community an opportunity to reflect on the service of others that have created the society and lifestyle we have today.

Since ancient times the aromatic herb of Rosemary has been believed to have properties to improve the memory. Perhaps because of this, rosemary became an emblem of both fidelity and remembrance.

On Tuesday our Prefects and incoming Yr 12 students will be handing out sprigs of rosemary with the following note to remind students of the historical importance of Remembrance Day.

Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”.

Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

Yr 7 Service Learning

So far our Yr 7 students have held a fundraising quiz and this week they are having a cake stall to raise funds for Assistance Dogs Australia who will be visiting us very soon to tell us about the role that dogs play in the community, supporting people who need assistance because of illness or disability.

Christmas Giving

As the year comes to a close we will be undertaking our two regular donations drives. Students in Yrs 7 – 9 will be asked to contribute a gift to the Anglicare Toys and Tucker drive.

We seek new toys and non-perishable food for Christmas hampers. Anglicare will pick everything up and take it to the Anglicare warehouse where it’s sorted and packed by teams of volunteers. Food hampers and gift parcels are then distributed to people in need through Anglicare’s emergency relief and family support programs and by local churches.

Students in Yrs 10 and 11 are asked to contribute to the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. The Hostel provides accommodation and specialised support to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The service aims to provide immediate support and accommodation for people at the time of crisis as well as facilitate access to other essential services and more permanent housing. These services range from provision of nutritional meals, clothing, showers and basic medical to intensive case management, legal and housing support, specialised health care, advocacy and  providing a safe, welcoming environment for people who are sleeping rough and have experienced trauma. At this time of the year we are seeking donations of new underwear and toiletries.

Year 11

Whole School Assembly

During the Whole School Assembly last week, it was the first time that all students had had their own seats during the school assembly– one of the privileges of being Yr 12s. Anika Misir and Ben Piro introduced a very engaging presentation of the Yr 11 Tanzania Trip, which occurred during the Term 2 holidays. Oliver Waterhouse’s video also vividly depicted their Maasai Service activity, wildlife safari, climbing Mt Meru and the beach at Zanzibar. I am sure their passion for community service and helping others will be inspiring for younger students.

Yr 12 Privileges

The Yr 12 Privileges commenced this week. It is hoped that students will recognise that these privileges, which they enjoy so much, also come with responsibilities. It is very important that students sign in and sign out when arriving late and leaving school early, so that we can record their attendance accurately. To maintain the excellent reputation of Redlands students in our local community, we put trust in our Yr 12s to maintain their high standards of uniform and courtesy while out for lunch. After waiting five long years to attain these privileges, it would be so disappointing for any student to have his or her privileges revoked because of a momentary poor decision. I know that our boys and girls will demonstrate the considerate behaviour that they always do, both inside and outside the School walls, and continue to enjoy their growing autonomy as they transition to adult life.

Pastoral Care This Week

During the Year Meeting this week, our School Counsellor, Ms Luangsangthong, presented on stress management which was followed by Ms Shorter’s talk on Mindfulness. The aim of these presentations is to prepare our boys and girls for the challenges along the road ahead, and equip them with awareness of what resources and support is available to them at school. We want the students to understand that their wellbeing and self-care is a key part of their learning journey and that these skills built at school will also have lifelong benefits.

Careers

Our Careers Advisor, Ms Salier, shared a few of her top tips on how to make a smooth transition from Yr 12 to the world of careers and higher education. These included paying attention to her weekly communications about various university opportunities, being respectful to teachers when asking for references and keeping an open mind towards making plans and changing plans. All the students are encouraged to talk to Ms Salier about their plans so that they will be equipped with sufficient information and resources. We are very fortunate to have Ms Salier as part of the support team, and hope that students will recognise her as one of their best resources in planning for their future. Her long experience in guiding students through the complicated process of choosing and applying to institutions and programs beyond school has helped many Redlanders to achieve their career goals.

Harbour Cruise

The Redlands Yr 10 Harbour Cruise will be held on Friday 9 November aboard a Captain Cook Cruise vessel on Sydney Harbour. The Harbour Cruise will commence at 6.15pm and finish at 10.15pm. Students need to board the vessel at Wharf 1, King St Wharf (outside Sydney Aquarium). Students must be collected before 10.15pm by a parent or carer. Please note students will not be allowed to leave by taxi or Uber unless accompanied by a responsible adult. Dress for the evening is formal and the event is for Redlands students only.

Yr 10 Camp

Yr 10 Camp takes place next week and should be a welcome change of scene after a busy exam period. On Monday morning, students are to meet on the Junior Campus on Alistair Street by 6.45 am. If your child is unwell on the morning of departure, please email me directly prior to 7.00am. Students will return to the Senior Campus at approximately 4.30pm on Friday. Rolls are taken as students get on the bus on Friday, not upon arrival at school. Once we arrive back at school, students may leave. Please make firm arrangements with your child about whether they are to make their own way home or if you are picking them up. There is still an expectation that students will participate in Saturday morning sport, if required.

Post Exams

Yr 8 students are to be commended on a successful examination week. As results are received in the next two weeks, students have been encouraged to speak openly with their teachers about feedback, marks and the necessary steps moving forward to ensure future success and achievement. Should students have any questions, please contact the relevant teacher or Subject Coordinator directly. However, the message Yr 8 is receiving, is that whilst exams are important, they are not the only source of subject assessment, and how students approach post examinations can be just as important as examination preparation. To assist parents in supporting students through this process, the Study Skills Handbook provides useful advice to students on actions taken after tests and exams (username: redlands | password: 68results).

Post Exam Celebrations

In celebration of the end of examinations, Yr 8 participated in a Zumba session followed by a BBQ last Friday. This was a lovely afternoon providing students with some relaxation time, and an opportunity to celebrate together as a cohort after a stressful and challenging week. Thank you to the Tutors and Ms Mountain who assisted in the success of the afternoon.

Invictus Games

Cristian Hill was exceptionally lucky to attend the Invictus Games at Olympic Park this year. It was ‘Game On Down Under’ when Australia welcomed competitors and their family and friends for the Games, hosting 497 competitors and 1,000 family and friends from 20-27 October. The Games featured competition in 11 sports with events being held across Greater Sydney, including Sydney Olympic Park and Sydney Harbour. The Invictus Games provided an opportunity for the long-term impacted Defence community to participate in programs and services across various sectors to encourage greater collaboration and co-operation amongst the veteran and serving community. What a wonderful opportunity for Cristian, and no doubt an experience he will never forget.

Uniform

Just to confirm, the girls pants are a winter uniform option only so all girls should be in the summer dress uniform.

Yr 8 STEAM Project 2018 – Beneath the Surface

Tuesday 13 and Friday 16 November

Throughout next week, Yr 8 students will be participating in an exciting two day STEAM project-based learning experience that interconnects Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.

In further progressing the students exploration of Game Changers and Change Makers (National Science Week Theme: Term 3) the ‘topic of inquiry’ for these two days will concentrate on the 2018 International Year of the Reef. In exploring aspects of climate change and global warming that cause coral bleaching, including human impact, students will be investigating the cause and effect on coral reefs both here in Australia and around the world. Sadly, it is evident that coral reefs are dying in many of our oceans, due to factors that include coral mining, pollution (organic and non-organic), overfishing, blast fishing, and the digging of canals and access into islands and bays.

Australia has one of the largest ocean territories in the world, a resource that remains largely unexplored and unknown. Many of us think of the marine environment as something to be used, taken from or added to, used for leisure and sporting activities, obtaining food or mining resources such as oil and gas, sand and even fresh water. All habitats and organisms in the marine environment are inextricably linked by the one thing they have in common, the water they live in. This is a major resource that needs protecting because if the quality of the ocean water suffers so does everything that depends on it, including us!

To commence this learning experience, all Yr 8 students will meet in Redlands Hall on Tuesday 13 November at the start of the day, where they will participate in an opening presentation led by Yr 11 students Alexia Giannesini (Wenona, Ambassador for the Australian Youth Climate Coalition) and Alice MacDonald and Benjamin Piro (Redlands Environment Prefects).

From here the students will then move into small groups to work on this project designed to engage them in addressing this real-world problem and answering various complex questions surrounding this topic. In exploring the Solution Fluency model, students will be developing deep content knowledge as well as exploring critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills in the context of this authentic and meaningful project.

The only resources that students will need on these two days include their Student Planner, laptop and pencil case.

2019 Student Leadership Elections

In a week where the mid-term elections in the US have taken centre stage in terms of media coverage, elections of a friendlier variety began for us in the Junior School.

On Wednesday, our Yr 6 2019 student leadership nominations took place ahead of the group’s transition into Yr 6 and the Junior School leadership opportunities that come with this move next year. With candidates encouraging and supporting one another, I was both heartened and proud to see 86% of the cohort of 125 students self-nominate for one of the 14 leadership positions below; a reflection of the safe, encouraging and supportive environment nurtured by teachers and students.

  • Junior School Captains (one boy and one girl)
  • Arts Captains (one boy and one girl)
  • Sports Captains (one boy and one girl)
  • House Captains (one boy and one girl per House – eight in total)

As part of the process, students heard from some of the present Junior School student leaders who were able to share their experiences as well as another student in Yr 6, Will Algar, who has shown great leadership this year without having an official title; an important message for all of the students to hear. In many ways, Will’s story of initial disappointment at not becoming a School Leader to moving past that quickly to congratulating those elected at Speech Day was the most significant one for me and perhaps many of the Yr 5 group. I have enjoyed observing Will, and so many of the current Yr 6 cohort, see where they could contribute to the School and as a Year Group, they have effected positive change as leaders this year. Another common message from the Yr 6 students was that they saw their role as one to serve the student body, not to tell them what to do.

Looking around at the students, I know we have no shortage of potential School Leaders who I know would be very capable representatives of the student body in 2019. In the coming days, Yr 5 students as well as teachers who know them, will now have the opportunity to vote and then these Captains will be formally announced by Dr Lennox and me for the first time at Speech Day on the final day of this term.

I am grateful to Ms Francis and her team for the meticulous planning and organisation of the nomination process and congratulate the students who have taken the first step towards leadership.

2019 Student Orientation Morning

As we continue to have one eye on 2019, this Friday, we are looking forward to welcoming 56 new Junior School students who will be joining us next year as they spend time with us as part of their transition to Redlands next year. A hallmark of this day has always been how our current students embrace their soon-to-be classmates with warmth and empathy.

For part of this morning too, we also look forward to welcoming our current Yr 2 Prep students to enjoy spending time in Yr 3 classrooms. Similarly, at the same time, Yr 3 will move up into Yr 4, Yr 4 into Yr 5 and Yr 5 will move up to Yr 6, where students will enjoy an early opportunity to meet teachers and experience a taster of next year. Our Yr 6 students will be away on Surf Education and they have their own Secondary School Orientation Day later this term on the Senior Campus.

Whether it is between Prep and Juniors or Juniors and Seniors, or in fact between any two Year Groups, a lot of careful thought goes into every aspect of transition for our students and it is certainly never assumed that the move will be a smooth one just because they are all under our Redlands umbrella. The ongoing dialogue between teachers in each of our sections is a key aspect of transferring knowledge of students from one section of the School to the next and this will also continue into next year, where necessary.

I look forward to reporting on the morning next week.

Visitors to Redlands

Last Friday, Mrs Fellowes and I were both thrilled and proud to welcome and host 70 Heads of Independent Primary Schools from across New South Wales for the group’s Term 4 professional learning session and lunch. It is always particularly gratifying to hear positive feedback from colleagues who have similar roles and many spoke of the warmth they felt around the Campus (not related to the heat last Friday!) and the beautiful learning environment that we are fortunate to have on the Junior Campus. Our thanks are extended to the many staff who supported us hosting this event but particularly to our Events Manager and Facilities team, who provided support before, during and after the event, such that the students and staff were able to carry on as normal through the day.

Parking & Safety

May I take the opportunity again to remind parents of the need to choose safety over convenience when parking near the school, particularly at the end of the day. Three areas of concern that have been flagged to me by concerned parents and teachers this week are:

  • Parents double parking on Cranbrook Avenue whilst waiting for their child which is causing other cars to have to drive around them and across the middle of the road
  • Parents parking in the clear No Stopping areas by the crossing at the top of Allister St, and the turning area at the top of Cranbrook Ave.
  • Parents irresponsibly beckoning their child to cross unsafely on Allister St and Murdoch St and not use the crossings on both sides of the Campus that are there for the purpose of safe crossing.

I implore this small minority of parents to take note of these reminders, which have student safety at the heart of its purpose.

Whooping Cough Alert

We continue to be notified of cases of whooping cough in the Junior School and parents are reminded to look out for signs and symptoms. NSW Public Health have advised us to remind parents to keep your child at home if they are unwell and are awaiting the results of testing. If diagnosed with whooping cough, they should remain at home until five full days of the prescribed antibiotic have been given.

Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker Campaign

Redlands Junior School will again turn its focus to ‘Letting our Light Shine’ by sharing the joy of Christmas with children in need in Sydney by participating in Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker Campaign.

If you wish to participate, please bring your gifts the Junior School Reception and place them under the Christmas tree. Christmas is a wonderful time to reflect on God’s generous gift to people and on the joy, we can share by giving.

While our focus in Junior School is the Anglicare collection, many families at Redlands also like to support our Secondary School collection for Matthew Talbot Homeless Shelter. Our staff and Yr 11 students serve breakfast there every Monday of the year and it is wonderful to be able to know that the people we meet each week will be the recipients of our gifts.  Our Yr 6 students have also been keen to meet the needs of people experiencing homelessness in a practical way. There will be a box for items in both Prep and Junior School Receptions. Collections begin on Monday 12 November and conclude Tuesday 4 December.

Kindergarten and Transition Gold 2019 Orientation

Students who are joining the Preparatory School for Kindergarten and Transition Gold in 2019 participated in an Orientation Day last Wednesday. Students rotated amongst the classrooms and throughout the day, the bi-fold doors between the rooms were opened, giving children the ability to have a large open area to explore. Teachers all commented on their readiness for this next phase and how well-prepared and comfortable students were in this new environment. This day was a milestone for our youngest members of Redlands and I thank Mrs Hunt, Mrs Huon, Ms Hurley and the Kindergarten and Transition Gold teaching teams, who worked tirelessly to make sure the children left with many happy stories of their first day in Kindergarten and Transition Gold. Simultaneously, an information session and morning tea was held for Kindergarten parents and thanks must also go to Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mr Nigel Coutts, and Junior Campus Counsellor, Mrs Sam Kourakis, who joined me in fundamental discussions with parents as their children begin their first formal year of school.

NSW Independent Primary Heads Association Conference

Last Friday, Redlands proudly hosted the Primary Independent Heads of Schools Conference. Mr Guha and I, together with around 70 Heads of Primary Schools from all corners of NSW, enjoyed the collegiality and connectedness that accompanies an event such as this. Our Deputy Principal, Ms McGarry, spoke on behalf of the School, giving the group an appreciation of the foundations of the School and stressing the importance of events such as these where school leaders model the significance of continued learning. Guests enjoyed listening to two delightful pieces of music played by the talented Junior Chamber Ensemble, Jiaqi Guan, Anneka Steele, Nicole Wang, Lara Wilson and Melinda Wright. Thank you to Hilary Luck, Jacqueline McGlade and their tutor, Mrs Maryana Sywak, for their time and efforts in preparation. We were privileged to hear from Dr Michael Nagel who is an Associate Professor, teacher and academic at a leading Queensland university in the areas of cognition and learning, human development and early learning, neurological development in children and adolescent psychology, and is regarded as one of Australia’s foremost experts in child development. So much of Dr Nagel’s address, which was heavily evidence-based, corresponded with the messages we have heard from previous speakers about neuroplasticity and early years brain development. Of particular interest to me, was the messages he gave about the impact of technology on the brain. My favourite piece of advice from his address was for parents to use the money that they would normally spend on technology for their children and instead place into sport and performing arts lessons – movement and music are so important to the ongoing nourishment and development of the brain. Dr Nagel made important links from the brain to early learning and schooling, and highlighted the importance of the following:

  • Emotional stability
  • Good nutrition
  • Plenty of time for play and exercise
  • Downtime is good!
  • Talk, talk, talk!
  • Sensory stimulation and movement builds better brains
  • Routine, routine, routine!
  • Limit technology – real intelligence comes from real people and the real world!
  • Consistency is the key, brains respond well to patterns

Thank you to the School’s Event Manager, Mel Hendra, the Music staff and the entire Facilities team for their support, efforts and assistance with the organisation of this event. Many of the attendees commented on our beautiful learning environment and the positive and happy ambiance felt around the School.

Early Childhood Parent Coordinator’s Group 2018

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Jennie Cadman and Kathryn Fox for their leadership and support of the Early Childhood Parent Coordinators Group this year. Last week, we held the final meeting of the year, which Chair of the Redlands Board, Ms Glenda McLoughlin, attended and addressed the group. The organisation of events continues right until the last day and I appreciate the dedication of all Parent Coordinators for their time and efforts this year.

Yr 2 Strings Concert

The Redlands Music Department would like to invite you to the Strings Concert to be held at 2.00pm on Monday 12 November in Dunnet Hall. This concert will showcase students in all the Redlands Strings programs across K-6, including performances by the Preparatory String Ensemble, Yr 2 Strings, Yr 3 Strings, Chamber ensembles, the Junior Strings Ensemble and the Senior Strings Orchestra. In addition to giving all students the opportunity to perform for an appreciative audience, it is hoped that younger students will be inspired by performances from their peers and gain an understanding of the opportunities that Redlands offers for strings players in their future years of study. The Strings Concert will run for approximately 45 minutes. Once the concert has finished students will return to classes and be dismissed at the end of the school day. We look forward to welcoming you to this event.

If I could share some tips with you about school preparation, it may help you avoid the unknown or alleviate some pressure.

  • Teach your child to help with dressing themselves, it will save time in the busy mornings.
  • Encourage your child to contribute with packing of their school bag and lunchbox.
  • Make sure they can open containers and lunch wraps in their lunchbox.
  • Phase out nap-time.
  • Be sure your child can function without a special blanket, toy or comforter.
  • Talk about starting Kindergarten (but not so much that you build anxiety).

Secondary Sport

Basketball – Boys

Our A and B boys teams played against St Pius over the weekend. With most of the games coming down to the final few minutes, we came away with wins in the 13A, 17B and 1sts Boys. Our 1sts Boys managed to sneak away with a win in what was a very close game. We had a three point lead, and with just seconds to go, St Pius shot a three pointer that if successful would have sent the game into overtime. Thankfully the shot was a narrow miss and we finished the game with a 72-69 win. Our C Boys teams played at home and finished with a clean sweep. A close game in the 13C saw Redlands come away with a one point win. This was followed up with more convincing wins for the 14C, 15C, 17C and Open C Boys. Well done to our 14D team, who after the first two rounds of the competition remain undefeated.

Basketball – Girls

Round 2 of Redlands Basketball saw close games for many of our teams against some strong opposing schools. Our Junior A and Junior B Girls teams travelled to Oxley and both finished the day with very convincing wins. Our Inter A Girls had a bye this round, and our Inter B team travelled to CCGS and had a tough loss against Central Coast. Our Open B Girls put up a great fight against Central Coast, and a tied score at the end of the 40 minutes had the game going into overtime, where Central Coast managed to end up on top. Our 1sts Girls played against Barker’s top team, and despite keeping the game close up until half-time, Barker were too strong for our girls in the second half.

We will be holding an ‘at home’ round in Dunnet Hall combined with the Redlands Junior School this Saturday. The day will feature our Junior School teams in the morning, followed by our 1sts Boys and Girls, and the 14A Boys. Please come along to support our teams.

Indoor Hockey

Congratulations to Eloise Trueman (Yr 7) and Freya Gait (Yr 7) who both played in the State Cup this past weekend in Orange. The girls’ Northern Suburbs and Beaches team were knocked out of the Semi Finals by the eventual winners, Sydney South, however the girls’ team was awarded the ‘Play the Whistle’ award for behaviour and sportsmanship for their division.

Touch Football

Round 2 of the ISA Competition saw our Senior teams playing their first round at our home venue of Macquarie whilst our Junior sides along with the Senior C sides travel across to Bowral. With all of our teams playing back to back games, this round shaped as a great chance for all of our teams to secure positions in the top four of their competitions and continue to build into cohesive squads.

Against Chevalier our Junior As kicked off the day with a resounding 5-1 win. Emma Mahon and Katie Wightwick were standouts, not only in attack but with their work rate in defence not allowing any easy metres for the Chevalier side. The team followed this up with another win this time against Oxley, the attacking quartet of Sophia Hill, Grace Rugge-Price, Madison Barwise and Louise Colin leading to a solid 5-2 victory.

Our Junior Cs were in brilliant form across both their games, scoring 11 tries across the two matches. Bronte Backhouse, Jazz Gregan and Daisy Oliver ran tries in from all corners of the park and some lovely work between Iona Carter and Anna Ivanovic set up wonderful try right down the middle. Two great results for our Junior Cs with a 5-5 draw against Oxley and a decisive 6-1 win against Chevalier.

In our Division 1 match ups our Redlands 1sts Girls came up against Barker 1sts and Barker Bs. Our girls had spoken about this match up, not only with something to prove based on results last year, but they also saw this as a chance to show how far they have progressed as a squad through the trainings and the camp away. In a narrow loss, our 1sts kept pace with Barker, at times looking like the much stronger side. There were multiple times where we broke their line. This close match built so much confidence in the squad and they followed this up brilliantly by smashing the Barker Bs 8-3. Caitlin Du Plooy was wonderful, leading the team around the park and keeping the scoreboard ticking over in our favour. Elsewhere, the combination of Domenica Stuart and Aoibheann Maclochlainn was causing havoc, making some great sweeping runs down the left side of the defence.

Following on from these two games, our Redlands Bs came up against the Barker sides and showed just how far they have improved as a squad, building pressure across both games they forced mistakes from the Barker sides with Miranda Renwick slicing through a tired defence for two brilliant tries.

Back over in Bowral our Senior C side came up against Chevalier first up, unfortunately losing a tightly contested game. They responded to this in the most positive way, maintaining a clean sheet against Oxley in a thrilling 1-0 win with Emilia Built scoring a scintillating try down the right side of the field, beating two defenders to the corner and diving over.

We now have four of our six teams right in amongst the top four in the competition with one of our teams holding an undefeated streak and sitting top of the table. I would like to also just personally thank Mia Boys for the wonderful photos from the weekend.

Sailing

Our Sailors have been enjoying their new digs at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and over recent weeks our sailors have been training in Elliots and Lasers preparing for both match racing and team racing events. Over the weekend, two teams from the Redlands Sailing program competed at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Youth 2018 Match Racing Regatta. Despite having only trained in the boats for a few weeks and never matching racing before, both the teams performed exceptionally well. Zac Brayden was the skipper for Redlands 1 and his team, consisting of Ethan McFarlane, Jameson Prescott and Mawson Ritchie, sailed extremely well throughout the day securing two wins against some of the best youth sailors in NSW. Redlands 2 was skippered by Ben Harrington with Julian Mare, Sienna Wessels, Katina Casimaty and Zac Nisbet as his crew. Ben’s team surprised the majority of the fleet with amazing speed around the course and managed to win one race against an extremely tough opponent. The Redlands Sailing program’s next event will be on 9 February when Redlands sailors will be taking on the Eastern Suburbs schools in a Teams Racing event in the new Redlands Pacer fleet that will be arriving in the next few days.

Junior Sport

Basketball

Its going to be an exciting weekend at our home venues Lang Gym and Dunnet Hall this week, with our A, B, C and D teams all at home and followed by our Boys and Girls Firsts and 14As in Dunnet Hall. It’s a great chance for Junior School players and parents to see the next steps in our Basketball program up close and personal. A BBQ will be operating throughout the morning, so for those playing local matches, pop in, have some breakfast and watch the best of the Junior School and Secondary School Basketball program in close succession.

It will be a welcome return to Dunnet Hall for many of our Firsts players, who haven’t played in matches here since their Junior School days.

Yr 5 and 6 matches have pushed forward 30 minutes. 5/6 D begin at 7.30am, 5/6 C begin at 8.15am, 5/6 B at 9.00am, 5/6 A at 9.45am, Boys Firsts at 10.30am, Girls Firsts at 11.45am and finally our 14A Boys at 1pm.

Our Yr 5 and 6 teams had a great weekend with wins in all grades, our teams really dominant and showing some great teamwork across the board. It was brilliant to have all of our teams at home and Dunnet Hall looks like a fortress!

Our Girls Basketball teams are playing some fantastic Basketball with nearly all of our teams coming away with close wins last weekend. Our girls are showing some toughness around the ball which is really refreshing and making a big difference in the results.

Cricket

Our cricketers had a fantastic win in one of the most exciting matches in recent Redlands Cricket history. After restricting St Andrews to a moderate total, our team were conservative in their run chase, taking their time to compile innings and managing it beautifully. Joe Hooper nudged the ball around taking the heat out of the St Andrew’s strike bowlers, putting together a well made 24. Charlie Parker needing 16 runs from the last over, never looked in doubt, drilled 4, 4, 4 and 6 to score the winning runs with 2 balls to spare. A great and deserving win for our hardworking cricketers.

IPSHA

IPSHA has a code of conduct that spectators and supporters from all schools are asked to abide by to help kids enjoy their matches. Their guidelines are straightforward and are the expected standard from our spectators.

  • Children play organised sports for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of spectators only, nor are they miniature professionals.
  • Applaud good performances and efforts from each team. Congratulate all participants upon their performance regardless of the game’s outcome.
  • Respect the officials’ decision.
  • Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during a competition.
  • Positive comments are motivational and encourage continued effort.
  • Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players.
  • Show respect for your team’s opponents. Without them there would be no game.
  • Encourage players to follow the rules and the officials’ decisions.
  • Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language, harassing players, coaches or officials.
  • Comments should not interfere with the running of the game.
  • Focus on the efforts and performance of the children rather than the result.
2019 Term 1 Sports Choices

Even though it feels as though our season is just winding into gear, we are starting to plan for 2019 Term 1 Sport. Keep your eyes peeled for an email in the coming weeks with a link to Trybooking for 2019 Term 1 Junior School Sports choices.

Surf Education

Our Surf Education PDHPE excursions to Freshwater beach have been a great success early on. Kids are having blast learning about surf conditions, practicing tube and board rescues, resuscitation as well as beach games.

The Friends of Music Annual General Meeting was held in the John Roberts Centre on Wednesday evening, commencing with a celebratory afternoon tea in the foyer, followed by the FOM President reporting on the committee’s involvement in many activities associated with Redlands Music this year.

The Department would like to acknowledge the exceptional work of this group of dedicated parents, mothers and fathers, who volunteer their time in assisting with various events throughout the year. With doors open to the new Music Centre in Term 1, our parent community have supported so many additional collaborative projects in 2018. From the Music Library Cataloguing Project, through to our Week of Celebrations as part of the official opening of the John Roberts Centre, this could not have been achieved without the ongoing assistance of all our parents. All this time and effort is certainly appreciated by the school, alongside the ongoing encouragement of all Redlands musicians in various performances across the Junior and Senior Campuses.

In particular, we would like to recognise the remarkable leadership of the 2018 President, Ms Felicity Gates, who has led the Friends of Music committee with impeccable organisation and drive this year. In particular, her lead role in overseeing the costumes and properties for the Senior Music Festival Finale is certainly noteworthy, supported by many of our parents in various creative roles. The FOM Committee members enthusiasm and support of all events throughout 2018 has been integral in our aim to foster excellent parental interconnections within the Redlands Music community.

As we prepare for another exciting new year that lies ahead, we would like to congratulate the following parents who have been elected as office-bearers in leading the 2019 Friends of Music Committee.

Yr 8-10 Music Elective Soirées (Weeks 3 and 4)

As a key component of the Academic Music Elective Performance Course, students in Yrs 8-10 Music presented evening soirée’s over the last fortnight, featuring both solo and ensemble repertoire. Based on a formal concert setting, all students within these programs performed confidently in front of staff, peers, family and friends. These opportunities are designed to allow students to enrich their musical capabilities, enhance stylistic understanding and practise essential presentation elements as a performer. In particular, these learning experiences formulate the final practical component as part of the course assessments. It was evident that all students were well-prepared for their performances and presented music of a very high standard. Thanks to our Music Elective teachers of Performance Ms Arienne Brodie, Mrs Amy Richardson and Mr Benjamin Castelli for their dedicated work and commitment. Our appreciation is also extended to Ms Tomomi Takahashi, Mr Zi-Hao Li and Mr Jason Xu for accompanying the students throughout the semester in the lead up to these concerts.
