Issue 33 2024 Term 4 Week 3 - 31 Oct 2024

From the Principal

It was wonderful to see our new Year 12 student leaders run their first Student-Led Assembly on Tuesday in the Secondary School. The focus of the assembly was on service and how our Redlands students are giving back to the community.

One way was through the Mary’s House Walk on Sunday morning, where Redlands students and other members of our community participated in this walk to raise money for Mary’s House – a local refuge providing support for women and children impacted by domestic and family violence.

At the assembly we also heard about Redlands’ support for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and our participation in the Great Book Swap this Friday. The funds raised from this event will help to ensure indigenous children in remote communities have access to quality resources, including books in First Nations languages, to help these children develop vital literacy skills.

At the assembly, the student leaders from the Class of 2025 also revealed their motto for the upcoming year: With Heart. This motto is underpinned by their desire for students to show compassion, authenticity, respect and responsibility in all that they do.

Personally, I love this motto as I regularly see our students learn with heart; lead with heart; play with heart; perform with heart; and as we heard in Tuesday’s assembly, serve with heart.

In an outside world that can sometimes appear cruel and heartless, I look forward to seeing how our Redlands students counter this narrative by being young people with heart both here at School and also in their local and global communities.

Community Update

A warm welcome and thank you to Tara Boris, Kathryn Parsons and Daniella Aburto Valle who joined the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) Committee at last week’s Annual General Meeting. Thank you to our passionate RPFA Executive of Brittne Whitelaw (President), Carrie Taylor (Vice President), Joseph Russo (Treasurer) and Jennifer Mast (Secretary) who will all continue in their roles into 2025.  Thanks too to the outgoing RPFA members of Emma Okahovat, Lisa Middlebrook and Monika Crennan who collectively and individually made significant contributions to our School during their tenure.

The RPFA continues to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life and their support and guidance remains invaluable. Our committed and generous volunteer members highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands, and we are ever grateful for their contribution. It was lovely to catch up with so many of our passionate parents and carers at the Volunteer Appreciation event held last week, where the significant contribution of many was acknowledged and celebrated.

Thank you to those in our community who have placed bids in our online auction in support of the means-tested Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship. The auction remains open until 3.30pm on Tuesday 5 November so there is still time to take a look and make a bid on the exceptional and unique items generously gifted by our community.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlands Parents and Friends

Thank you all for joining us at our Annual General Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation drinks last week. It was wonderful to welcome back so many familiar faces to the committee, and a few new ones as well. Your commitment to RPFA underscores the importance of our diverse community and the collective effort we put into making the Redlands community thrive.

At the meeting we reflected on the past year (still a bit blurry-eyed from the Festival the week prior), celebrated our achievements, and discussed some of the challenges we’ve faced. We also looked ahead to our goals for the upcoming year.

The meeting was followed by Volunteer Appreciation drinks hosted by the School and Board. We would again like to recognise our dedicated team and volunteers whose hard work has made admired and greatly appreciated contributions to our success. Your commitment is invaluable.

Some highlights from the President’s report:

???? At the beginning of the year, Twilight Drinks brought together over 400 attendees.

???? The Festival of Redlands was the highlight of the year, attracting more than 2,000 participants, with over 100 parent, student and alumni volunteers coming together to celebrate Redlands’ 140th birthday. The School Art Auction at the Festival raised over $6,500 for the High Country Campus Appeal.

???? An impressive 160+ parent and community-led gatherings were held this year!

???? The RPFA successfully updated the financial reporting system, transitioning all records to Xero.

???? RPFA contributed to enhancing the Pulse calendar by adding large-scale RPFA events for 2025.

???? Over $20,000 in donations were made by RPFA to the school and nominated charities.

The Secondary School Moves Through the Term With Heart

This term has been eventful so far, and our students have embraced a range of challenges admirably!

The entire school gathered on Tuesday in Lang Gym for our first Student-Led Assembly. Our Year 12 Captains announced their motto With Heart which was wonderfully received by students and staff. Mr Corcoran has expanded on this in his Note Day article this week – we’re both very excited about where Year 12 and the entire Secondary School community will take this motto over the next 12 months.

“With Heart comprises of three key pillars: empathy, commitment and authenticity. We believe that empathy should be an important focus for the community, where we create a positive and supportive culture at school through listening and showing compassion. Additionally, demonstrating commitment and passion is critical in growing school spirit and showing up for others. And the third pillar, authenticity, is to forge a space where the community is comfortable being vulnerable and being themselves, and willing to celebrate that in each other. One of the things the team really likes about With Heart is the ability to put any verb in front of it, which will allow each portfolio to have really clear and tailored goals to truly enhance their aspect of the community. For example, Play with Heart or Serve with Heart.”

Aneke Golowenko & Liam Petersen – School Captains

Yesterday, School Captains Aneke and Liam chaired their first ever Student Leaders meeting. They began by working with the team on culture setting and moved to discussing the best meeting format approaches. It was heartening to hear them agree with Thomas Dewar’s suggestion that ‘no comments would be viewed as silly’, embracing an inclusive approach to listening, sharing and collaborating with each other over the coming year. The Student Leadership Team then discussed the focus of their upcoming assemblies, the brilliant work of the House Captains and supporting the School community to become familiar with the Captains of Activities.

Our Year 9 and Year 7 students showed impressive dedication and maturity throughout their recent examinations. For Year 7, this was their first time sitting formal exams in Maths, English and Science, and they managed the experience exceptionally well.  Year 7 students are now enjoying their STEAM days under the theme “Bee-yond The Hive,” engaging in creative, hands-on projects across Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths.

Meanwhile, Year 9 completed their first-ever full examination block outside of their usual timetable. They were rewarded with a well-deserved “Chick’n’Chill” lunch, where they relaxed in the sun in the Top Terraces and enjoyed some leisure time together. We wish Year 9 all the best as they head off to Myall Lakes for their camp next week!

Our Year 10 students are embracing a unique transition term to help them prepare for the rigours of Senior School. They are currently trialling Year 11 Maths and English classes, developing essential skills and ensuring their HSC and IB courses for English and Maths align with their future goals. In their other subjects, Year 10 is honing transferrable skills like independent learning, research and time management, which will be invaluable for Years 11 and 12. Regular home learning is expected over the coming weeks, and parents are encouraged to reach out to teachers if they have concerns.

On Monday 18 November, Year 10 will participate in an “All My Own Work” workshop to understand the importance of academic honesty and integrity as they progress into Stage 6. They also have Business Week at Macquarie University to look forward to in Week 7, following their camp in Week 5.

Finally, we wish Year 8 all the best as they prepare for their examinations next week!

Tackling Global Issues at the United Nations Youth Voice Competition

On Saturday 19 October, Year 7 students Aashray So and Paolo Corneli represented Redlands at the United Nations Youth Voice Competition, held at the University of Technology Sydney. The event provided a platform for young people to explore pressing global challenges, ranging from the rapid pace of technological development in Australian schools to combatting loneliness.

Both Aashray and Paolo demonstrated exceptional speaking skills and presented innovative solutions to these complex issues. Their participation not only highlighted their ability to articulate thoughtful perspectives but also their commitment to addressing real-world problems.

Reflecting on his experience, Aashray shared:

“To reflect on my experience, I would say it was a very enlightening activity. I came to understand that writing a speech is not as simple as it seems. You can write it, but you’re not done there. You must edit and revise it, add humour and facts, research the topic, and overall put a lot of work into it. I think that my process was very enjoyable as I was interested in my topic (how the loneliness epidemic can be combatted) and was excited to present my hard work in a supportive yet still competitive environment. Overall, it was very enjoyable, and I would definitely do it again.”

The competition allowed students to engage with the global community, sharpening their communication skills while addressing some of the most significant issues facing the world today. It was an inspiring day, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.

Thank you to Vyvian Kang for her assistance on the day.

From Garden to Table: A Hands-On Harvest with the Gardening and Environment Club

The Gardening and Environment Club offers a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with nature and learn about sustainable food practices. Meeting every Monday at lunchtime, the club allows students to experience the full cycle of growing and harvesting their own produce. This week, students celebrated their efforts by harvesting carrots, which had been carefully nurtured throughout the past term.

The students were excited to pull the carrots from the soil, eager to see the results of their patience and care. These freshly harvested carrots will be incorporated into their dinner, making the experience both rewarding and practical as they get to enjoy the fruits of their labour. This hands-on experience not only enhances their understanding of food sources and environmental responsibility but also cultivates valuable life skills in gardening and sustainability. The club continues to thrive as a space for students to engage actively in sustainable practices and appreciate the benefits of homegrown food.

Upcoming Event (tomorrow!): Indigenous Literacy Foundation: The Great Book Swap

The Great Book Swap and Bake Sale to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation is happening this Friday 1 November at lunchtime. It is a student-led initiative that will contribute to the Community-led, meaningful programs that the Indigenous Literacy Foundation runs.

Donate to our Redlands Great Book Swap

On Tuesday, during our Secondary School Assembly, we heard from two of the Year 12 students running the event. This is what they had to say about why they want to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation:

Kosta:

“After visiting Arnhem Land in Year 9, I gained a newfound interest and appreciation for Indigenous culture. It was personally one of the best camp experiences I’ve ever had, and upon returning home I found myself researching about the lives of Indigenous people and discovered that only 40-65% of Indigenous Adults are literate, which is insane in the 21st century in a country like Australia. As I was researching, I also came across the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and was impressed by their programs where they are partnering with Communities to meet literacy needs. I also really like that they are providing the resources for Community members who want to publish their stories in their languages. For example, at least one of their books has been written by the Yolgnu People whose stories I found incredible to listen to and I think it’s wonderful that people across Australia can now read them.”

Lauren:

“Our partnership with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a step forward into a more inclusive and connected Australia. I believe that we are helping to build a bridge to provide more space for indigenous voices to be heard in their own language and to support an organisation that is importantly and powerfully Community-led. It’s important that it’s Community-led because Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should never be told what they need. They should be able to shape their own present and future. We are just lucky to contribute to this.

So, Secondary School students, please come with cash and/or a physical debit/credit card tomorrow (no phones). It will be great to see long lines for the Bake Sale and if you’ve forgotten to bring in a book for the swap, it’s okay, you can still purchase a book from the stand!

If you would like to donate to our Redlands Great Book Swap to raise money for Indigenous Literacy Foundation, please go to this link.

Mary’s House Walk: Reflection from the Service Captains Lachlan Green and Charlotte Humphreys

This past Sunday, approximately 40 Redlands students, staff, and parents came together to form our inaugural Redlands team for the Mary’s House Walk. We walked 8.8 kilometres through North Sydney and the surrounding Lower North Shore, aiming to raise awareness, show our support and fundraise for the impactful work of Mary’s House. The walk started with a speech from the CEO Yvette Vigando, and was officially opened by the Governor of NSW Margaret Beasly. The walk was a great success with over 800 people getting involved and raising over a total of $140,000 through various fundraising teams and sponsors.

Mary’s House Services is a community-founded refuge dedicated to supporting women and children affected by domestic and family violence. Established in 2015-2016 by residents of Sydney’s northern suburbs, the organisation addresses gaps in government-funded services by offering safe, secure accommodation and personalised case management. Beyond its shelter, Mary’s House also provides therapeutic and wellbeing programs through the Daisy Centre, promoting empowerment, emotional and physical safety, and social support for women seeking to rebuild their lives. Mary’s House is dedicated to creating a safer, more hopeful future for women and children in need.

In the final week of last term, we (Charlotte and Lachlan) had the privilege of interviewing CEO Yvette Vignando and meeting with Philanthropy Director Janine Wood. A powerful point that stood out was their emphasis on the insidious inclusivity of domestic abuse. Yvette highlighted that domestic abuse doesn’t discriminate and can impact anyone, including “put together business owners” and people with “the nice front doors.” She also shared a startling statistic: while 9 out of 10 Australians believe domestic violence is a serious issue, only 3 out of 10 think it’s a problem in their own local area. This socio-economically relevant discrepancy highlights a critical gap in awareness and recognition, underscoring the need for broader education and localised support to break down stigma and encourage community accountability.

Ultimately, we are incredibly proud of Redlands participation and engagement with this event. As a team, we raised just over $300. More broadly, we are proud that our School cares about the cause. As we confront the devastating reality of high domestic abuse numbers, our community’s unwavering dedication to raising awareness and supporting initiatives like Mary’s House serves as both a powerful statement and a vital step toward change.

We would like to thank and acknowledge students and staff who walked with us: Eloise Allen, Katherine Arena, Eleanor Blankenstein, Clara Blackstock, Imogen Burns, Eliza Draper, Aibe Elsworth, Jesse Forest, Remie Gibbs, Lachlan Green, Krishna Gupta, Sara Hamori, Charlotte Humphreys, Chiara Kallianiotis, Megan Kirkpatrick, Remy Morris, Liam Petersen, Mia Phipps, Chloe Phipps, Aashray So, Abbie Sewell, Sela Tea, Juliet Treloar, Daisy Williams, Georgina Williams, Millie Winton and Mr Callaghan, Ms Kang, Ms Peterson, Ms Philips, Ms Renard, Ms Zaferis

And a final thank you to all the parents and friends of Redlands who came with us on the walk as well as those who donated to Mary’s House or sponsored their child, thank you.

Student-Led Assembly – Indigenous Literacy Foundation

This week, our 2025 Service Captains, Charlotte Humphreys and Lachlan Green, led their Year Group’s first Student-Led Assembly. They highlighted how authentic connections are at the core of meaningful service and social engagement, allowing us to share in others’ lives, listen to their stories, and find ways to support and uplift them.

Charlotte and Lachlan spoke passionately about the power of connection, emphasising that, while we may not always be able to build these connections ourselves, there are inspiring organisations like the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) that dedicate themselves to this vital work. To bring this message to life, they invited Marj Hutchinson from ILF to share insights on how ILF provides culturally relevant books to remote communities across Australia. This effort helps bridge the gap in resources and ensures that Indigenous children and families have access to books that celebrate and reflect their cultures and stories.

Marj, who has been part of ILF’s Fundraising team for two years and is a mother to two young children, understands the importance of early literacy. She highlighted ILF’s mission of addressing the lack of libraries and bookshops in remote areas. Through ILF’s Book Supply program, schools, community centres, health centres, and women’s centres can order books specifically curated for various age groups, including:

  • Toddlers (0-3 years)
  • Children (4-7 years)
  • Older Children (8-12 years)
  • Community (13+ years)

Notably, over 50% of the books in these packs feature Indigenous authors and illustrators. This ensures that Indigenous children see their own cultures reflected in the stories they read, fostering a strong sense of connection, belonging and pride.

For more information on the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, visit: www.indigenousliteracyfoundation.org.au

In addition, Yr 11 students Kosta Mangos and Lauren Dower shared their experiences with the CAS component of the IB Programme, which encompasses Creativity, Activity and Service. Lauren described CAS as an opportunity for students to expand their horizons and actively engage with their community. Reflecting on her own experience, she shared how CAS encouraged her to participate in a variety of activities, from fun runs to volunteering at events like book swaps.

When asked why he chose to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, Kosta shared that his visit to Arnhem Land in Year 9 sparked a deep appreciation for Indigenous culture. Learning that only 40-65% of Indigenous adults are literate, he was inspired to support ILF’s programs, which partner with communities to address literacy needs. Kosta emphasised the significance of ILF’s work in publishing stories in Indigenous languages, which helps preserve First Languages – a vital part of cultural identity.

Lauren added that supporting the Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a meaningful step towards a more inclusive Australia. By building a bridge for Indigenous voices to be heard in their own languages, ILF fosters an essential, community-led initiative that contributes to a connected future.

Redlands Event to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation – Great Book Swap and Bake Sale

To participate, students were encouraged to bring in a book and a gold coin donation before Friday.

By students participating, they will help to empower communities and foster mutual understanding, creating a foundation for a stronger, more inclusive Australia.

Year 6 Connection Program: Revisiting the Junior Campus

On Tuesday, over 30 students made a special trip to the Junior Campus as part of the Year 6 connection program. During their visit, they answered questions and shared Senior Campus experiences with younger students. This was a reflective and nostalgic experience, as many of our Year 10 students revisited familiar classrooms and recalled memories from their time in Junior School.  A big thank you to all those who participated, making it a memorable day for both campuses.

Public Speaking: UN Youth Voice Competition

Also on Tuesday, three of our talented students – Maria Smith, Jerry Sun, and Marcus Richardson -represented our school in the UN Youth Voice Public Speaking competition, with support from Ms Kang and Mr Skinner. Each student showcased their unique perspectives and proposed thoughtful solutions on important global issues, demonstrating their passion for positive change. Congratulations to all participants for their commitment and exceptional presentation skills.

Critical Reasoning Workshop: Exploring Communication Without Language

On Wednesday, 13 of our Year 10 students attended a Critical Reasoning workshop held in Redlands Hall. Supported by Dr Regis and Dr Poon. The workshop challenged students to reflect on a thought-provoking question posed by disability advocate Helen Keller: “Can humans communicate without language?” This workshop encouraged critical thinking and deeper discussion, broadening students’ perspectives on communication and understanding.

On Tuesday 29 October, five Year 9 and 10 students from Redlands took the stage at the United Nations Youth Voice Competition, held at Hornsby Girls High School. This prestigious event challenged students to tackle some of today’s most pressing global issues, with this year’s topics ranging from preserving endangered languages to reducing the negative impacts of tourism.

Year 9 was represented by Andy Guan and Thomas Beatty.

Each student demonstrated excellent speaking skills and presented their own unique and thoughtful solutions to the issues presented.

Winter School

As communicated in Note Day last week, Mr Eddy Atkins spoke to the Year 9 cohort today about Winter School in 2025.

This is an exciting opportunity for students to experience a residential program and develop independence while also learning new skills.

An expression of interest to begin the application process will be sent to students after camp.

The Great Book Swap

Tomorrow lunch time, Redlands will be hosting The Great Book Swap for Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This week, students have been asked to bring in a book and gold coin donation to participate in the swap. If they have not done so already, please encourage your child to bring in a book they would like to swap along with a donation! It’s a wonderful chance to support a meaningful cause while discovering a great new read for the summer holidays.

Schools for Impact

This week, Year 9 have begun to generate ideas to fundraise for the Schools for Impact program. We have tasked them with finding a job to complete in exchange for donations and it is great to see some unique ideas coming through, such as piano tutoring for younger siblings, gardening services and organising a mini triathlon! With this in mind, please note that your child may be coming to you over the weekend to offer their services and have been equipped with a suggested script to negotiate a fair price. Feel free to suggest a job you (or a neighbour) may need done!

Year 8

Final Examination Prep

In the final week before their Yearly Examinations, Yr 8 have been working diligently to get the most out of their lessons and to ensure they can fit in study time outside of school hours. Many students have been making good use of the library’s quiet and collaborative study spaces, while others have been accessing the academic mentor support offered by Illuminate. There has been a good energy on the campus as students have put in those last efforts to practise their skills and consolidate their knowledge, so they can bring their best efforts next week.

A quick reminder to check the Examination Block letter from Dean of Studies (7-10), Ms Rolon, so that you are aware of what students should bring to each examination and the process involved should a student face any illness / misadventure during the examination period. You can find this information on Pulse.

I wish everyone the best of luck with their examinations next week!

New Student Leader Assembly and the Indigenous Literacy Fund

On Tuesday, our new student leaders led their first Student-Led Assembly, addressing the School with confidence and enthusiasm. They were keen to introduce the year’s new motto – ‘with heart’ – explaining its importance in capturing the Redlands attitude of putting your best effort into everything, while also reflecting the compassion and support we share for one another in our community.

Fittingly, much of the assembly was then taken up with a focus on the upcoming book swap for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) with an ILF member explaining the nature of the organisation to students and the impactful work it undertakes, working with remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to deliver culturally appropriate books, meet their literacy needs (particularly of infants) and enable the production of books written by adults and children in the Communities, often in First Languages.

Tomorrow, at lunchtime, Redlands is hosting the Great Book Swap for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. We encourage students to continue to bring in books to swap, along with a gold coin donation, so they can take part in this charitable action.

Subject Spotlight: Technology Race Cars

Have you ever wanted to build your own race car? Well, it seems that Yr 8 Technology are currently living that dream, designing and then building their own Formula 1 style race cars in their Technology lessons. While it is still early days in the creation process, students are deeply engaged in their work and excited to eventually race off one another towards the end of term. I look forward to seeing whose design is the fastest!

As Promised – Drama Performance Photos

Last week, our Yr 8 Drama cohort put on a wonderful evening of entertaining, serious and thoughtful pieces to conclude their first year of Drama study at Redlands. It was a wonderful showcase of their talent and passion, as evident in these photos taken by Mr Gidney.

Thank you to all the Drama staff for their support of students and their efforts in coordinating this showcase event.

Spotlight on Clubs: The Irregular

Happy Halloween from the Irregular! Are you looking for some last minute costume advice or not sure where to head this evening for trick or treating? If this is you, then be sure to jump onto the Redlands Irregular Pulse page to read the best advice for costumes and locations in their October Halloween edition.

If you want to contribute to the Irregular for future editions (including their upcoming Christmas edition), you can join in at LH 2.6 during lunchtimes.

Moonbah Evening: Gearing up for Growth – Monday 18 November

A reminder that our Moonbah Gearing for Growth evening is fast coming up on Monday 18 November. This event is designed to offer students and parents clear answers to any last questions they have about the Moonbah program for 2025. See below for further details.

Round Square Conference at Oxford University:

The School is excited to announce a fantastic opportunity for our students to attend the Round Square Conference in Oxford in the UK, from 12-17 April 2025. This inspiring event will bring students from around the globe to the prestigious Oxford University, where they will engage in thought-provoking discussions, refine oratory skills and experience unforgettable moments. Participation in this event offers students a chance to take on roles such as Discussion Facilitator, Debate Champion or even participate in a film production project with an international crew. It is a rare, non-competitive platform for young leaders to share their perspectives on global issues, develop leadership skills and be part of an incredible international dialogue.

Please review the attached poster to discover more about the trip. To express interest, students should email their Expression of Interest (EOI) to Ms Renard on arenard@redlands.nsw.edu.au by 23 November. Full details of what is need in the EOI can be found below. Selection will occur during the week of 25 November, with confirmations sent out before the term ends. We encourage all eligible students to apply promptly and seize this chance to represent Redlands on a global stage.

What do you need to include in your Expression of Interest?

  1. Why are you interested in attending the Round Square Conference in Oxford?
  • Describe what excites you about this event and how it aligns with your personal interests or goals.
  1. What role(s) would you like to take on during the event (e.g., Debate Champion, Discussion Facilitator, film crew member), and why?
  • Explain how this role fits with your skills or what you hope to gain from this experience.
  1. What experience do you have with public speaking, group discussions or leadership activities?
  • Share examples from school, community or personal activities that demonstrate your relevant skills or experiences.
  1. How do you see yourself contributing to discussions on global issues with peers from different cultures?
  • Describe any perspectives, skills, or qualities you bring that would enrich group discussions.
  1. What do you hope to learn or accomplish from attending this conference?
  • Outline specific skills, insights or personal growth you are aiming for by participating.
  1. How would you share what you learn from the Conference with our school community upon your return?
  • Suggest ideas of how you would bring back and share your experience to benefit fellow students and staff.

Year 7

Year 7 Exams

We would like to take a moment to commend our Yr 7 students for their dedication and resilience during the recent Yearly Examinations. We are incredibly proud of the positive, mature and collaborative approach shown by many of our students throughout this formal assessment period. Exams can be a challenging experience, yet when students equip themselves with the tools to rise to the occasion, the results are truly inspiring. Great things can happen, and we are excited to see our students’ continued growth and success into Year 8.

Y7 STEAM – Bee-yond the Hive Lessons

Bees play a crucial role in our ecosystem as vital pollinators for both wild plants and many of the crops we rely on for food. By transferring pollen between flowers, bees help to ensure the growth of fruits, vegetables, and nuts, supporting biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Their work is so essential that it’s estimated one-third of the food we eat depends on pollination by bees and other insects. However, bees face numerous threats, including habitat loss, pesticides and climate change. Supporting bee populations by planting bee-friendly flowers and reducing pesticide use can make a big difference.

  1. Busy Workers: A single bee can visit up to 5,000 flowers in one day.
  2. Communication Experts: Bees perform a “waggle dance” to communicate the location of flowers to other bees.
  3. Honey-Makers: To produce just one pound of honey, a hive of bees must visit two million flowers!
  4. Essential to Diversity: Bees pollinate around 80% of the flowering plants on Earth, supporting a wide range of species.
  5. Incredible Flyers: A bee’s wings beat about 200 times per second, which helps them zip quickly from flower to flower.

We have been so fortunate to be expertly led by the team at Rooftop Bees who specialise in corporate beekeeping services in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. They install and maintain beehives on corporate buildings, industrial estates and campuses to help drive sustainability and corporate social responsibility goals.

Over the next 2 days we will be exploring the following:

Exploring AI

Students will develop a ‘classifier’ algorithm to help computers make agricultural decisions, such as creating a beehive sentry.

Arduino Beehive Sentry

Students will gain hands-on experience building an Arduino-based system to automate the detection and capture of beehive pests.

Rooftop Bees Tour

A guided tour of the beehives on the Learning Hub rooftop will teach students about the importance of bees, their challenges and their role in ecosystems and sustainability.

Science Experiment

Students will investigate honey composition using a refractometer to measure sugar content. They will compare different honeys for sweetness, viscosity and colour, while discussing nectar sources and their impact on honey characteristics.

Honey/Coffee Scrub

Students will create a Honey/Coffee ground scrub using locally sourced ingredients and explore ingredient sourcing and the principles of a circular economy.

Research

Research packs and questions will be provided to deepen students’ understanding of bees’ life cycles, pollination, threats, conservation, and habitats.

Head of Junior School

As we approach the final weeks of the school year, the flurry of activities and events brings both excitement and additional demands on our time. During this busy period, it is especially important to maintain focus on our School’s core values of moral courage, responsibility, compassion, fairness, honesty and respect. Our aim is to support each student to finish the school year successfully by encouraging them to embrace these core values in their everyday interactions and decision making.

Congratulations to our PDHPE teacher Mr Andre De Villiers who received a World Teachers Recognition award from the NSW Teacher’s Guild last Friday evening for outstanding contributions to his profession. This is a very prestigious award; we are very proud of Andre and pleased he is part of the Redlands teaching staff.

We have received some exciting news about two of our Year 6 students, Leo Carroll and Heloise Field, who have been competing at the IDO World Tap Dance Championships in Prague. Heloise competed in the Children’s Solos Female section and made it through to the semifinals and placed 16th. Leo competed in the Children’s Solos Male section and had an outstanding result. He placed 2nd with a podium finish. Together they competed in the Children’s Duos section and finished 6th overall. These are outstanding results, especially considering they were competing against dancers from five different continents. Well done to Leo and Heloise.

Spanish Incursion

Students in Years 3-6 enjoyed the Spanish Incursion, Viva Mexico today.

Students were treated to a truly beautiful concert and cultural journey through Mexico with Victor Valdés, playing his Mexican harp and guitar.

The Kindness Project

From our Dean of Students, Katie–Louise Clinton

In Term 4 our Year 6 Wellbeing Leaders have launched the Kindness Project.

The Kindness Project Is all about highlighting students who have shown kindness to one another, when no one is watching. The Wellbeing Leaders have collaborated to make a special ‘post’ box. Next to the box will be cards that have a space where you can write about a time someone has been kind and what was the action shown?

The Kindness Project box is in the Prep and Junior School Reception area and is open for anyone to use including our teachers, please share your ideas and spread the magic and we hope to feel the transformative power of kindness. Please encourage your child to talk about people at school who have demonstrated kindness, ask them if they see someone helping another student make sure to put a note in the kindness box! We will be making announcements in Assembly as we spotlight the way we show kindness to each other at Redlands.

Parents Circles: Responsive Parenting and Raising Healthy Children

From our school counsellor, Silvia Roberts

Being a responsive parent sounds simple enough, but living high-stress lives, often in isolation, lots of us know how difficult it can be. Recognising that the essential condition for a healthy child’s development is the child’s relationship with nurturing adults, I invite you to join me for regular Parents Circles.

The last Parents Circle in 2024 will take place in Week 4 in the Prep Library after school drop off. We welcome our Prep and Junior School parents to attend. Please feel free to bring your own coffee or tea. As this is a parenting circle of support, numbers are limited to 20 to keep it small enough for interactive discussion.

The topic for Week 4 (Wednesday 6 November, 8.30–9.30am in the Lucy Hill Library) is:

Positive Functional Development: Model of Developmental Immaturity

  • Focusing on understanding and exploring how early experiences in the family shape children’s emotional responses, decision making and the relationships they develop later in life.
  • Learn to recognise patterns of “immaturity” in yourself and your children.
  • How do my own childhood experiences influence my parenting style?

Are you feeling trapped in a parenting pattern that might not serve your child, yourself, or your family? Connect and ask questions to empower yourself with tools and insights.

Secondary Sport

It was great to see all sports taking off last weekend, but it proved a timely reminder about students wearing the correct uniform.

Wearing the correct school sports uniform during weekend fixtures is essential for several reasons, a unified appearance helps students feel part of a team, fostering camaraderie and a strong sense of school pride. It can boost morale and motivate students to perform better, knowing they represent their school. This in turn reflects well on the school and its students. It demonstrates commitment, discipline, and respect for both their own school and competitors, which is crucial during inter-school or public events.

Sports uniforms are typically designed for functionality and ease of movement, enhancing student safety by providing appropriate support and visibility. Uniforms also make it easier for coaches, referees, and spectators to distinguish team members on the field or court. Wearing the correct uniform teaches students responsibility and discipline, helping them understand the importance of rules and standards, which can translate to other areas of their lives.

These aspects make adherence to the correct sports uniform an integral part of student participation in school sports fixtures. Students who do not wear the correct uniform either traveling to and during their fixtures will be in breach of the Secondary School Code of Conduct.

The Uniform Shop has ample stock of all uniforms, so please ensure that you have enough to cover any washing mishaps that may occur during the week.

Sailing

It has been a great start to the term for Sailing in which sailors have gone straight into training, continuing to hone their skills for the upcoming Redlands Cup Sailing Regatta. Eliot sailors have had a chance to diversify their skills with Tuesday and Saturday sessions spent on Pacers. On Thursday, sailors practised in heavy winds and more adverse conditions, with the pacer fleet continuing to get multiple full teams races in. Furthermore on Saturday, after a mobility session to begin, most sailors sailed Pacers, allowing for practice sailing with new crews, and practised both fleet and teams racing, and sailing to constantly changing winds (gusting from almost no wind so much sailors needed to practise depowering the boats)

Hugo Baird, Captain of Sailing

Tennis

It was a great start to the Summer Tennis season on Saturday with the students playing their first matches in the NSTA competition.

More than 120 students are now involved in the Tennis program, and it was great to see the students supporting each other in the new teams in the competition or attending the development squads at Cammeray.

There were some very close and exciting matches.

At 8am, Redlands 19 beat St Pius 18 at Talus St by 3 sets to 0.

At 10am Redlands 1 beat Cammeraygal 2 in 3 sets, with 2 very close tiebreaks.

At Mosman, Redlands 2 had an extremely close and long doubles match against Killara 1, winning the tie break and winning overall with some excellent singles play.

Another stand out match was Redlands 15 who beat St Pius 12 in 3 sets, with 2 very close tie breaks.

General Sport Information

Fixtures

  • All student training and fixture details will be available to families under My Schedule on Redlands Pulse. Additionally, the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check Redlands Pulse Friday afternoon to ensure you have the latest fixture information.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via the Sports Absence Form available on Redlands Pulse – Secondary School Sport (under ‘Quick Links’ prior to missing any training session or weekly fixture.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2024 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:
      • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
      • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
      • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
      • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Wet Weather

  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)
  • Mr Eddy Atkins (High Country Campus)

Important reminder regarding student pick up at sport venues on Wednesdays

Please take note of the following important reminders regarding Wednesday sport pick-up. If you plan to pick up your child from the venue, please notify the Junior School Sport department (juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au) before 12:00pm. on Wednesday.

Any emails received after this time will not be passed on to supervising staff, and your child will return to school as usual.

Discuss the pick-up arrangements with your child each week to avoid confusion. We’ve had some children feeling upset at the venue because they were unsure of the plan.

If you have a standing pick-up arrangement, remind your child to inform the staff (Redlands teachers) during transit to the venue. This will help alleviate any stress at dismissal time.

If you or the carer is not at the venue at the time of departure, your child will be transported back to school. Please ensure you arrive slightly earlier to avoid this situation.

Pick up has to occur at the conclusion of the session and not prior. Students cannot be left behind for late arriving families.

Rep Sport Summer Sport Term 4

A reminder to check your app each week in regard to your child’s team as our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY                    in direct comparison to other students across the sport

ATTENDANCE        any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE               this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Parents and carers are reminded to check the teams each Friday afternoon for changes that may have taken place at training during the week. Students may at times be asked to fill in for other teams occasionally due to absentees etc.

Non-Rep Sport

Students were reminded about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport in Term 4. Students are asked to adhere to these;

  • Right place
  • Right time
  • Right equipment

Can you please ensure your check your child’ activities to see what sport they are commencing in this term making sure they bring the appropriate gear and or equipment to sport.

Non Rep families are also reminded to check the home page of Pulse as well as their individual sport pages on a regular basis for updates.

Yr 2 and Yr 3 Strings are looking forward to performing in the Strings Concert, and Yr 4 and 5 students are busy preparing for the MIP Concert. In our lessons we have spoken about those pesky nerves that sometimes get in the way, and how we can help to overcome them by being well prepared and ready to perform. We encourage students to continue regular practice at home, and our Tutors are always available to help with any tricky passages. Please save the date for the following performances which will be open to parent and carer  visitors:
