Issue 33 2023 Term 4 Week 4 - 02 Nov 2023

From the Principal

At Tuesday’s Secondary School Assembly, our new Yr 12 student leaders introduced their Class of 2024 motto: Step Beyond. This motto encourages all students to step beyond what they previously thought was possible, to step out of their comfort zones and to make the most of the many new and different opportunities afforded to them at Redlands.

One area where I have seen students “step beyond” this week was in the performing arts, specifically  drama and theatre. On Monday evening, five talented and courageous Yr 7 students (Sienna de Saxe, Fergus Kerr, Charlie Li, Clementine Roumanoff, Mackenzie Willis) stepped out of their comfort zones to compete in the semi-finals of the Yr 7 Theatresports competition, performing improvisational drama games against nine other schools. Pleasingly, the team finished in second place and will compete in the Yr 7 Theatresports Grand Finals later this term.

On Wednesday evening, I had the great pleasure of attending our Cocurricular Drama production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was the first time in my seven years at Redlands where we have produced a mainstage play and it was certainly worth the wait. The students shone in this 1920s adaptation of Shakespeare’s enduring comedy and enchanted the audience with their performances.

Personally, it was special seeing a number of students who I taught in Yr 7 English three or four years ago “step beyond” and shine on the stage. It was also wonderful to see so many other students in attendance, encouraging their friends and peers on the stage and creating a supportive environment for them to “step beyond”. Tickets are still available for Thursday and Friday evenings, and I would encourage others in our community to attend.

Tickets can be booked HERE.

Last Friday was World Teachers’ Day and I would like to acknowledge the amazing efforts of our teachers who are dedicated to supporting and educating our students each and every day. I would also like to thank the Redlands Parents and Friends Association for the morning teas they provided last week on both the Junior and Senior Campuses in recognition of our teachers.

AIS Perspectives Survey

A sincere thank you to those parents and carers who have provided their feedback via the AIS Perspectives Survey. We would still love feedback from those who haven’t had the opportunity to provide it to date. You can do this via the survey link in the email sent to parents/carers from Redlands evidence@aisnsw.edu.au. The survey will remain open until next Wednesday 8 November.

Community Update

A warm welcome and thank you to Michelle McDonald, Monika Crennan and Joseph Russo who joined the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) Committee at last week’s Annual General Meeting. A new RPFA Executive was also formed led by Brittne Whitelaw (President), Carrie Taylor (Vice President), Joseph Russo (Treasurer) and Jennifer Mast (Secretary).  Our thanks to the outgoing RPFA members of JP Forrest, Rebecca James, Annette Swann, Jacqui Halliday and Declan Hourihan, who collectively and individually made significant contributions to our School during their tenure.

The RPFA continues to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life and their support and guidance remains invaluable. Our committed and generous volunteer members highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands, and we are ever grateful for their contribution. We look forward to working with the new Executive and Committee in support of the exceptional work of the RPFA within our community.

We are currently looking to fill two roles in the School’s Community Engagement team.  Our Director of Admissions leads a team responsible for the planning, management and implementation of all admissions activities of the School, with a focus on future students, ensuring a well-planned and engaging admissions journey. More information on this role can be found here. We are also looking for an experienced event professional to join our team to manage and support Redlands events, with a focus on developing and implementing engaging and memorable experiences for our School community. If you are an enthusiastic and passionate events professional, with an excellent eye for detail and highly developed interpersonal skills in communicating and collaborating then take a look here.

Redlands staff enjoy a number of key benefits that include professional development opportunities and tuition fee discounts. If you would like to discuss either of the two roles above, then please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Redlands Community Carols Service

And finally, a save the date for the Redlands Community Carols Service to be held on Sunday, 3 December, from 5 to 6 pm with St Peter’s Cremorne. All families are welcome and a BBQ and refreshments will follow the service for those wishing to join.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Standing with the Students and Staff of St Andrew’s Cathedral School

This weekend will see members of our Basketball (Boys and Girls) program play against St Andrew’s Cathedral School. It has been a difficult week for their school community as well as some of the Redlands community who have connections with St Andrew’s Cathedral School. There may be St Andrew’s Cathedral School teams who will be observing a minute’s silence prior to games commencing this weekend. We know the Redlands teams will be supportive of this minute’s silence in remembering the staff members lost in the past week.

We are aware that there may be a media presence at some of the fixtures. St Andrew’s Cathedral School has released the following statement to the media ‘Given the recent tragedy at St Andrew’s Cathedral School, we respectfully request that you honour the privacy of our students and school community.  Therefore, we ask that you do not take any photos or film during the moment’s silence and today’s fixtures.’

Personal Formation Underpinned by School Values

The Redlands Values guide our interactions, shape our character and enable students to be positive members of our school community:

Respect – Responsibility – Compassion – Honesty – Fairness – Moral Courage

Redlands has always been a school where difference has been celebrated – this means that we are inclusive in outlook and action. We are not cookie cutter. We embrace diversity. Our students are kind, inclusive and celebrate each other’s unique gifts. They have friends with whom they play sport, friends from the musical, friends from their core class and friends they catch the bus with. The Redlands staff support student friendships and lots of them. We know it’s good to have lots of friends, especially lots of different friends.

Students are regularly reminded that they should embrace multiple friendship groups at school – it’s not always healthy to only be a part of one friendship group. Rather students are encouraged to find a range of friends through a range of endeavours. We want our young people to genuinely be inclusive and see the excitement in getting to know peers who are not the same as them. We know that as they move through Secondary School, students tend to move into smaller classes. They might find themselves in a language class with only four other students or working on a collaborative project with only two of their peers. More often than not, students do not get to select the people they learn and collaborate with and so viewing friendly interactions with peers as an opportunity for learning and growth is as important to developing resilience as it is to aligning with the Redlands values. Students don’t need to be friends with everyone but they do need to be friendly with everyone. When we interact with others, we leave our impression on them – a positive impression should be what we strive for.

This year we’ve talked to students regularly about ‘safety’ – and how every student has the right to come to school and feel safe. At Redlands, psychological and emotional safety is just as important as being physically safe. To uphold this commitment to our students and their families, we will not tolerate behaviour or words that are unkind or mean. There is no place at Redlands for inappropriate comments or behaviour that humiliates or intimidates.

An expression that is being used more widely in social media and we have heard on the Senior Campus from time to time is “simp”. Urban Dictionary defines ‘simp’ as being when a male is overly submissive to a female and gains nothing from it. Essentially ‘simp’ is a slang insult for men who are seen as too attentive and submissive to women, especially out of a failed hope of winning some entitled sexual attention or activity from them. At Redlands the use of this expression is viewed as unacceptable. More often than not, students who choose to use this expression rarely understand the negative implications of its meaning and may simply view it as a way to engage in ‘banter’ with others. Assistant Dean of Students, Ms Matthews and Year 7 Advisor Mr Tod-Hill, spoke candidly with Year 7 students this week about the use of this expression (and some other expressions which are holding currency with young people on social media) and also the implications of being a bystander when others use inappropriate expressions, which regardless of intention, can be harmful.

Ms Matthews said:

“When you laugh because someone says something mean and risky, you are supporting that point of view. You may not have directly called someone a “simp” but by laughing you are saying “that kind of judgement is okay with me”. This is not who we are and I challenge you to be individuals who demonstrate care and consideration for others, who want to leave a positive impact”.

When our students leave school and go to university or perhaps even before then when they might have a part time job, these lessons and values will be significant to them being included and respected. In these environments bigotry, racism, sexism, misogyny and other inappropriate language and/or physicality are not tolerated. The Redlands Values teach our students how to be life ready; to be respectful of everyone; to take responsibility and self manage; to have moral courage and call out poor behaviour by being an upstander rather than a bystander. I feel privileged to lead a community where these values are honoured and authentically pursued by all – students, staff and families.

The recently published Student Code of Conduct is very clear. It articulates the school’s expectations for student behaviour whether that be at school, at home, on the bus, at the beach, at Warringah Mall, at sport or online. At all times our students are expected to conduct themselves in a way that aligns with our values. We are privileged to have such a powerful collection of School Values and to belong to a community that genuinely upholds them in words and actions.

Below are some images of our Year 7 students collaborating with their peers on how to live the Redlands Values during their first period back this week post-exams. In recent weeks staff and parents whom I have spoken to about Year 7 have all expressed their affirmation for how maturely and impressively Year 7 have been moving into being their own – their own people, their own cohort and their own person. It’s a pleasure to observe their growth in and outside of the classroom and their capacity to lean into the School’s Values and to model themselves on the older students who do this so seamlessly in their daily interactions in the School and external community.

2024 Student Motto: “Step Beyond”

On Tuesday, our new student leadership team ignited the spirit of aspiration and community here at Redlands. Inspired by Mr Corcoran’s wisdom—magic occurs beyond comfort zones—the student leadership team unveiled their 2024 student motto: “Step Beyond.”

This motto fuels students to shatter comfort zones and powerfully contribute to our rich school community. It beckons them to seize opportunities across school life, fostering genuine growth.

Promoting themes of community strength, teamwork and Redlands pride – anchored in the values of authenticity and courage – our student leaders call upon every student to embrace “Step Beyond” and carve their path in the year ahead:

  • Break free from self-imposed limits
  • Claim a seat in class next to someone new
  • Dive into fresh cocurricular activities
  • Rally for service initiatives
  • Extend a hand to a friend in need

Students will make 2024 a year of bold ventures, personal growth and community enrichment. Step Beyond expectations and watch their Redlands family flourish.

Speech Giving and Big Hearted Leaders

Our new student leaders have been sharpening their speech-giving skills and I am proud to say they are developing well and most definitely ‘falling forward’ and ‘stepping beyond’ via each new experience. Below is Tara Gold and Conor Petersen’s speech from Tuesday’s senior assembly. They are a divine pair who were happy to share this with the parent community. (And I can share that when Conor said ‘Step Beyond’ he did so with great exuberance which brought joy to all!)

Tara: About a fortnight ago we all got together to discuss what we wanted to achieve over the next year and learn more about what makes successful leadership. We are all very excited for the next year and we found that focusing on strengthening the community, thinking more as a team and less as an individual and encouraging Redlands pride, were all key themes within our discussions.

As a team, we were inspired by Mr Corcoran’s frequent message that we each have our own small, individual bubbles. However, it’s when we push outside of these personal bubbles and engage with the broader Redlands community where all the magic happens. During our last year of school as a team, we wanted to focus our leadership around the key values of authenticity and courage. Our new theme for 2024 allows us to do just that, as well as embracing the unique culture we have at Redlands. So our theme for 2024 is…

Conor: Step Beyond!! This theme is about stepping out of this bubble, out of your comfort zone and exploring how we can contribute to this close-knit community we have at school. By making the most of the opportunities available to you, in all aspects of school life.

Step Beyond builds on last year’s motto, Fall Forward’s foundation of embracing mistakes and setbacks as opportunities for growth; as Step Beyond encourages us to put ourselves in positions where growth can happen.  We would love for everyone to personally embrace this theme, adapting and adopting this mindset to fit into your own trajectory across the next year.

So what we would encourage you all to do this term and into 2024 is to Step Beyond what you think you can achieve, Step Beyond and sit next to someone new in class, Step Beyond and enrol in a new cocurricular activity, or maybe sign up for a service initiative, reach out and help a friend in need. We want you to go beyond what is expected of you and what you expect of yourself! Thank you.

Examinations Conclude and the Feedback Begins!

As the final Year 7 to 10 examination blocks conclude (and even more excitedly, the HSC concludes for 50% of our Year 12 cohort this week) the students can be proud of their achievements and resilience. But parents, please be ready! The next stage of this learning journey can prove as challenging and we warmly encourage our students to lean into the discomfort that may surface with the return of exams – marks and improvement targets!

When we spoke to the students at the start of this final term of 2023, Ms Rolon, our wonderful Dean of Students (7-10), and I strongly emphasised the priority of the examination block for students in Years 7-10 – learning about learning! The following elements are important and with your teenager, we encourage you to use the following list as a diagnostic tool to evaluate their performance:

  • Exam Preparation – did my study schedule support me?
  • Exam Preparation – which study strategies were most effective?
  • Exam Preparation – was studying in the evening or on the weekend more helpful?
  • Mindset – did I engage in useful and supportive thinking strategies?
  • Exam Week – what worked well and what did not?
  • Exam Technique – during the exam/s, did I maintain focus? If not, why not?
  • Exam Technique – during the exam/s did I use my time well? If not, why not?
  • Exam Experience – rate the exams 10 to 1 in terms of experience and discuss why
  • Managing the Return of Exams
    • Did I take note of the mark/grade and also the feedback?
    • If I performed well or was satisfied with my marks/grade and feedback, then have I considered what contributed to this positive experience?
    • If disappointed, did I reflect for 24 hours before seeking further teacher feedback and support? A nicely crafted email to your teacher requesting support is welcome.
    • Did I consider my marks/grade in one subject with all of the other marks/grades in my other subjects so as to contextualise my experience and surfacing emotions?

For parents and carers managing a young person’s experience of examination return, the following strategies have been noted as helpful to developing resilience and contextualising the experience as one of self-learning (rather than self-defining).

  • Listen and affirm a young person’s feelings – they may feel unhappy and/or unsuccessful about their examination results (it’s normal to feel an uncomfortable emotion)
  • Affirm their experience if it was unexpected (young people can cope when things turn out differently to what they imagined)
  • Put the ball in their court – ask a young person ‘what do you need to do now to be able to cope with this?’ (this shows our young person that as adults we have confidence in their capacity to cope)
  • Reiterate the ways the young person can self-manage (supports the adults to avoid stepping in and taking over and ultimately shows the young person that their parent works in partnership with the School by recommending the counsel of subject teachers and tutors as support people)
  • Reframe the narrative – an examination experience may be challenging rather than impossible; a student may have been feeling nervous rather than having anxiety; an examination mark may be really disappointing rather than devastating – avoiding catastrophising language and placing the young person’s experience in perspective is always helpful
  • If concerned, please phone the Year Advisor for a confidential conversation and together we can empower the student to greater agency and self-learning

Redlands Christmas Drive 2023

We’re excited to announce our 2023 Christmas Drive, focusing on compassion and generosity. Each house will collect donations for their chosen charities. Students are encouraged to pledge a minimum of $10 and find creative ways to fundraise, such as skipping a coffee or assisting with car washes.

During Vertical Tutor Week 6, detailed information will be shared. In Week 8, we’ll record the pledges, represented by Christmas ornaments on our school tree. The Drive will conclude in Week 9 with a Carols ceremony and House activities, celebrating our students’ efforts.

Last year, our community successfully raised thousands for flood-affected families in Lismore. We aim to exceed that effort this year. Your support is vital. Thank you for helping our students make a difference.

Giving and End of Term Christmas Events

Across the Junior Campus at Redlands we have a wonderful opportunity to contemplate and put into action our school values by generously giving to those in need in the wider Sydney Community. In Chapel and Christian Studies this term students have been thinking about how they can use their time, words, energy and ideas to gift their friends, family and community and beyond with positive actions and attitudes; considering how we can embody our school motto to support and encourage others.

Christmas Cards

Some Redlands families have generously organised a concert at Mosman Manor Retirement Village. Our Year 1 and 2 students this year have joined in the fun by making beautiful Christmas Cards and paper chains to share with the residents. The messages are heartfelt and full of kindness. High achievement in the program can lead to students being selected to represent Australia in the International Science Olympiads.

Throughout the year, students study one or more of these scientific disciplines and then in early August sit a challenging examination that tests their knowledge, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Examination Reflection

This week, Yr 10 have begun to engage on examination reflection and the utilisation of feedback in preparing for senior studies to assess their strengths and weaknesses, identify areas of improvement, and understand their learning style. By analysing their performance, students can pinpoint the topics or skills that need more attention, thereby creating a focused and efficient study plan for senior studies. Additionally, feedback from teachers provides valuable insights into where students fell short and how to bridge those gaps. It helps in setting realistic goals, tracking progress and making the necessary adjustments to their study strategies. Through this reflective process, students not only enhance their academic performance but also cultivate essential skills like self-discipline and resilience, which are vital for success in senior studies and beyond.

Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 21-27 April 2024

Redlands will be offering a Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 21-27 April 2024. This Tour will be open to current Yr 9 and 10 students.

In this cultural immersion, students will revisit and build on the ideas they were introduced to in last year’s Culture College Camp, consolidating knowledge and understanding. After a brief stay at the Gulkula site students will travel to one of the remote Yolngu Homeland areas, usually Nyinyikay. This offers the opportunity for a much more personal, extensive, and detailed exploration of Yolngu culture than was possible on the Year Group Camp.

Visiting and spending time in a Yolngu Homeland is something few people ever get to experience. Students will be immersed in the living culture of Aboriginal clans of East Arnhem Land, one of the most culturally intact and pristine regions left on Earth. This unique program provides privileged access and interaction with the Yolngu people and their lands of which they have been the traditional owners for over 50,000 years.

This Tour is an opportunity for students who are ready and willing to consider more deeply the knowledge they gained previously and how to effect change for the future. We are proud to be working with Culture College to provide opportunities for connection between cultures.

The cost of the tour is $5,395. A proposed itinerary and booking form can be found on Pulse.

Bookings and payments are made directly to Culture College, so please check their Terms and Conditions on the Booking Form.

Year 9

Examination Week

A very short update this week as Yr 9 are sitting their Yearly Examination block.

We have been so impressed with the way Yr 9 has engaged with their examinations. They have worked studiously in their study periods and tackled challenging exams with grit and determination.

Well done Year 9!

Catch-up Examinations

If your student missed an exam this week due to illness or misadventure, there is an opportunity to complete the catch-up next Tuesday 7 November. I will send your student an email on Monday to confirm the exam/s that need to be caught up and the rooming.

Getting Marks Back

The time post exam blocks can also be stressful as students await and start to receive their results. This article from Atomi (I have used this with my senior students) provides some mindset advice towards helping students deal with getting marks back post examinations. Please see this link for further reading.

Examination Week

A  very short update this week as Yr 8 have spent the majority of the week in Redlands Hall completing their end-of-year examinations.

We have been thoroughly impressed this week by the effort all students have put into this exam block. Arriving on time, the use of the pre-exam study time and their adherence to exam conditions has been outstanding. I have said to them a number of times this week that a high standard has been set and they have been living up to it daily.

Well done Yr 8!

Year 7

Examinations are Done and Dusted – It’s Back to Lessons and Learning:

This week, Yr 7 were back in the classroom, engaging once again in valuable learning. Having successfully moved through their first ever Secondary School examinations, much of the material explored now in lessons will be based around building key knowledge and transferable skills to ensure students are in a confident position to tackle their subjects next year. It is important that Yr 7 stay focused and keep working effectively until the end of term, so they get most benefit from this important classroom time.

In Tutor time, we will be continuing to explore the key habits that make for a successful student, while also turning our attention to reflecting on the year that was. Tutors will be engaging students in identifying their strengths and their shortfalls and challenging them to consider how to continue a trajectory of growth into Yr 8.

On Monday, we gathered as a cohort for an assembly to reiterate the importance of being respectful in all that we do and consciously working to build a culture of kindness and compassion in the School. Assistant Dean of Students, Ms Matthews, took Yr 7 through the new Redlands Code of Conduct, outlining clearly the behaviours expected of students and helping them to see how to best embody the School’s values of honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, fairness and moral courage. Students were then broken into smaller groups of around 10 and tasked with noting down how they would like people to think of their cohort moving forwards and then brainstorming the types of behaviours and actions they can take individually and as a group to foster a culture of kindness and compassion in the School.

It was a beneficial assembly and the exercise gave students a chance to reflect on their own behaviours and values and consider how they can keep helping to build a safe, respectful and caring community within the School through their daily actions.

Yr 7 Theatresports Strikes Again!

The Yr 7 Theatresports team have done it again! On Monday evening, our Yr 7 team competed against nine schools at St Patrick’s School in the Semi-Finals of the Theatresports Schools Challenge and placed Second. This result means that they now have the opportunity to perform at the Grand Final. Making it to the Grand Finals is a testament to their passion and skill and a fantastic achievement for our young improvisers. Congratulations once again to Sienna de Saxe, Fergus Kerr, Charlie Li, Clementine Roumanoff and Mackenzie Willis. Thank you also to their Theatresports tutor, Amber Virtue, for doing such an outstanding job in training our students.

Next week, in our Year Assembly, Yr 7 will be treated to an impromptu performance from the Theatresports team, and we look forward to seeing their skills in action!

Term 4 Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • Week 7: Yr 7 Vaccination clinic (Friday 24 November).
  • Week 8: SS Carols (date tbc)
  • Week 9: End of Term and Speech Night at The Star (Wednesday 6 December).

Yr 5 Student Leadership

Last Friday, as part of the leadership development process, Yr 5 participated in another action-packed day with Cameron Brown from Explore, Discover Act. The students engaged in a range of activities that developed their teamwork skills and built on their understanding of effective leadership. They were challenged to work outside of their comfort zones and apply their creative and critical thinking skills to solve problems. The students explored the opportunities and challenges of leadership in their School and community and evaluated the attitudes and behaviours of quality leaders. The day provided a chance to connect with peers across the cohort and reflect on their values as individuals and prospective leaders.

The workshop was another important step in the Year Group’s journey towards their collective student leadership in 2024, which continued this Monday with the opportunity for Yr 5 to self-nominate for various positions for 2024, as outlined in a recent letter from Ms Osborn to Year 5 students and families.

As part of the process, students heard from some members of Yr 6 who shared their experiences this year and the Yr 5 teachers provided the students with more specific information about the requirements of each role and the School’s expectations of its leaders.

Knowing the Year Group well, I know that we will have no shortage of potential school leaders who I know would be very capable representatives of the student body in 2024.

Students, as well as teachers who know them, will have the opportunity to vote and then these Captains will be formally announced for the first time at Speech Day on the last day of this term by our Principal, Mr Corcoran, and me.

Junior School Wellbeing Day of Activities – Tuesday 7 November

Next Tuesday, our Junior School students will be enjoying a day of wellbeing activities and fundraising that focus on the wellbeing of our students, teachers and our wider community. We have planned a wide variety of engaging, hands-on activities for the students, which will be day of connection and collaboration as we celebrate music, movement, art, nature, dance, drama, team building and ‘giving back’ to Bear Cottage, a children’s hospital in Manly with whom Redlands has had a long connection with. Later this term, we hope to again welcome some of their team to our assembly.

The range of activities will include:

  • Health Hustle and Dance Performance led by our Year 11 students
  • Guest speakers from Year 12
  • Team building activities
  • Dance workshops
  • Theatresports
  • Pantomime
  • Art in class
  • Campfire reading

HSC and IB Senior Studies Information Evening (Redlands House to Yr 9)

I am often asked by Junior School families about our Senior Studies offering at Redlands where in the final years of schooling, Redlands offers students the choice of either the HSC or IB pathways for students. I am delighted to share information about an upcoming Parent Information Evening for families from Redlands House to Yr 9 and know that this will be insightful for many of you as you look ahead for your child. As a parent of children in Yrs 7 & 9, I am also looking forward to attending this session with my parent hat on and thank the Secondary School leadership team for extending this session to our Junior Campus families.

2024 Student Orientation – Friday 10 November

Next Friday, we will welcome over 50 new students who will join the Junior School in 2024 as part of their process of orientation into Redlands. I know that our current students will warmly welcome their soon-to-be peers and for part of the day, Yrs 2, 3, 4 and 5 also move up a year to the Year Groups that they will be in next year and enjoy activities with different teachers. This will allow them some time with possible new teachers, new students, and begin to get a feel of new learning spaces and expectations. The students will also rotate around each classroom doing a series of engaging activities.

Preparing Yr 6 for Secondary School

On the same date next Friday, our Yr 6 students will enjoy a full day in the Secondary School as part of their transition, which I know is an important day for them ahead of their move into Yr 7 in 2024. For any Yr 6 student not continuing at Redlands, a normal day of learning will take place on our Junior Campus.

We are also looking forward to welcoming a number of current Secondary School students to spend time with every Yr 6 class next Tuesday in Q&A style sessions where our Yr 6 students can (and they do!) ask them about anything they would like to know more about or are worried about in the transition. We have often seen the Yr 6 students more comfortable to raise questions with fellow Redlands students and I am grateful to some of our Secondary Staff who will also be present at these times on our campus, including the cohort’s Yr 7 Year Advisor and Assistant Year Advisor, Ms Walker and Mr Walker, as announced last week.

What’s in our Lunchboxes!

Did you know children consume around 30% of their daily food intake at school? Most of this comes from the contents of their lunchbox. What children eat during their day at school plays a crucial role in their learning and development. This said, I love to wonder around and have a little peek into lunchboxes to see all the deliciously healthy food around our playground during break time and have conversations with students about food being the important fuel to keep them going for the rest of the day.

Over the last few weeks, our staff who are on lunch duty and I, have noticed an increase in high sugar ‘treats’ in lunchboxes, these are often packed with love and well-meaning parents have asked, ‘make sure you eat your sandwich first..’ but I can assure you that in most cases, the treat goes down quickly followed by a few bites of the healthy food.

I know families are time poor and I am not here to judge or lecture, I am merely advocating for our children so that their bodies can be fuelled for learning and growth. If you are running out of ideas of what to put in lunchboxes, there are numerous websites with ideas or hop onto a What’s App group to share thoughts. The kids don’t care how things are cut up, if their lunchbox is the latest model or if their drink bottle is insulated, they just want delicious food that not only fills them up but provides them long lasting energy. I think we all know that the quick sugar hit after a high sugar treat can lead to unhelpful lows later in the day.

If your child is a fussy eater, this can at times be challenging to find alternatives. Below are some great ideas from the SwapIt program.

Secondary Sport

Engaging in sport, particularly for teenagers, can instill a number of positive habits that can be extremely beneficial not just for academic studies but also during exam periods and for the overall personal development. Here are five key habits that can be developed through sport and how they relate in the importance of academic success:

  • Time Management – student-athletes often have to balance their sporting commitments with academic responsibilities. This fosters excellent time management skills. They learn to prioritise tasks, set schedules and allocate time for training, competitions and studying, which is crucial for academic success.
  • Discipline and Work Ethic – sports require dedication and consistent effort to improve and succeed. Teenagers who play sports develop discipline and a strong work ethic, which can transfer to their academic pursuits. This mindset encourages them to persevere through challenges and put in the effort required to excel in their studies.
  • Goal Setting – athletes frequently set goals for their performance and work diligently to achieve them. This goal-setting mentality can be applied to academic goals as well. Students who play sports are more likely to establish objectives and work towards them, which can enhance their academic performance.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration – team sports teach teenagers the importance of working with others, communication and collaboration. These skills are equally valuable in a classroom setting, where group projects and discussions are common. Students who have experience in teamwork are often more effective in group academic activities.
  • Stress Management – engaging in physical activity through sport can be an excellent way to relieve stress and improve mental well-being. Teen athletes are more likely to develop healthy coping mechanisms for stress, which can lead to reduced anxiety and better focus on their studies.

These habits are important for academic studies because they contribute to a well-rounded and disciplined approach to education. The skills learned through sports can help students perform better in school, manage their academic workload effectively and develop a growth mindset that encourages continuous improvement. The stress management and physical fitness gained from playing sport can lead to better mental and physical health, which in turn can enhance one’s ability to focus and succeed academically.

‘You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.’

We know the Redlands teams will be supportive of this minute’s silence in remembering the staff membe’s lost in the past week.

If you have any issues accessing session information( for training or matches) via your Student Calendar or Redlands Pulse, please feel free to reach out to the Tennis Administrator Ms Caitlin Wong.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via Clipboard prior to missing any training session.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2023 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Junior Sport

IPSHA Gymnastics

Congratulations to our Junior Representative Gymnastics Teams who competed at the IPSHA gymnastics competition today. The teams have been training with Aussie Gems since Term 2 outside of school hours and were exceptional in their individual routines and disciplines today. Both Redlands and the coaching staff are very proud of them.

Mountain Biking

We have families who are involved in Mountain biking (MTB) National Inter-schools in Thredbo and would be great to see more Redlands children competing and representing the school.  The event will run between the 4 and 8 March 2024, with registrations commencing later this month.  The event is for children year 3 to 12 run across a number of different events. Please get in touch with contacts that can be found in the link below.

Sport Calendar

The sport calendar for Term 4 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here.

Redlands App – Communication

In Term 4, all Redlands Sport Activities will continue to be through Pulse and the Redlands App.  Here you will be able to see all activities, teams and groups your child is part of, all scheduled lessons and locations and receive instant push notifications for any changes or cancellations.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sports – Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday Sport, only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Representative Sport Team Movement

In regard to representative sport and the movement of players across ability-based teams, it is transparent for all parties as unexplained team movements sometimes cause unnecessary stress. At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY – in direct comparison to other students across the sport
ATTENDANCE – any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved
ATTITUDE – this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Our Yr 9 Drama Curriculum Showcase Performances took place on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 October in the Drama Studio. Over the past term, Yr 9 Drama students have been working on their performance assessment pieces for their current topic, Docudrama. Congratulations to all the students who performed!

A big thank you to the Yr 9 Drama teachers, Sam Novis and Kathryn Smith, for all their efforts and hard work on the Yr 9 Drama Classes and in addition to Sam Novis for organising the Showcase Performance evening.

P-12 Ensemble Expectations Reminder

As we approach the end of year events, it is a good time to check in with your child regarding their regular practice and preparation for cocurricular ensembles. With four weeks to go, it is essential that we are consistent in our messaging of high expectations combined with high levels of support. With daily practice, our students can achieve so much! Ensuring that this practice is inclusive of their ensemble repertoire as well as personal pieces is also important.

We also are reminding students that they must bring all equipment to rehearsals, including instrument, music, pencils and other required equipment. It may be helpful to set reminders or alarms the night before for students to remember this. Your support in helping your child succeed and develop their independence in music ensembles is invaluable.

MIP Parent Information Session: Year 4 2024

Yesterday we held an information session for Year 4 2024 parents regarding the Music Instrumental Program (MIP). We encourage parents to reach out to Ms Katherine Moses should you have any questions.

Symphony Orchestra – New Ensemble for 2024

We’re excited to introduce the Symphony Orchestra, an extension ensemble that will rehearse weekly and will be integrated into our Senior Strings program. Unlike the previous “Festival Orchestra,” this new orchestra is not just brought together for special events but will be a consistent part of our school’s musical landscape.

The Symphony Orchestra will rehearse from 3.30 – 4.15pm every Monday, starting Week 3, Term 1 2024.

The aims of the Symphony Orchestra are to:

  • Create an authentic orchestral experience for our students
  • Provide a weekly space for auditioned Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion players to collaborate with Combined Senior Strings.
  • Explore a variety of previously inaccessible orchestral repertoire

We’re inviting Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion players to audition for this extension ensemble. These players will join the Combined Senior Strings weekly. Following their departure, Intermediate and Advanced Strings will continue to rehearse until 5.00pm.

For more information, interested students should check audition information found on the Music Department Audition iLearn course.
