Issue 33 2022 Term 4 Week 4 - 03 Nov 2022

From The Principal

It has been wonderful to welcome back the Yr 9 students and staff who took part in the Indigenous Cultural Immersion trip to Arnhem Land last week and to hear about the significance of their time with the Yolŋu people and how much they gained from the experience. There have been numerous emails of gratitude shared and the comments below from Krishna Gupta highlight the importance of the program.

I have been honoured to visit Arnhem Land in the past week, and I am writing to express my gratitude. I thoroughly enjoyed discovering the Yolŋu law system and kinship, and making friends with several of the Yolŋu citizens. I have gained a deeper understanding and heartfelt respect for these people. The connections among their community and the kindness they displayed whilst providing this experience for us Yr 9 students is simply unforgettable.’

My sincere thanks to Culture College for their partnership in facilitating this memorable experience and to our dedicated team of staff who gave so much of themselves to support the program and make it possible.

I am delighted to announce that Ms Argiro Anagnostu (eLearning Coordinator (P-6) and Ms Wendy Duckworth (eLearning Coordinator 7-12) are joint recipients of the 2023 Redlands Innovative Teaching Fellowship.

Next year Argiro and Wendy will be attending the International Society for Technology in Education conference in Philadelphia to learn more about how Redlands can leverage the transformative potential of digital technologies to rethink and redesign learning to best serve our school community. The field research component of their tour will include visits to a number of lighthouse technology schools in the Brisbane area as well as Queensland University of Technology. Findings from the study tour will contribute to the development of our Culture of Innovation at Redlands in alignment with our Strategic Plan

The RPFA AGM was held last Thursday evening, followed by a function to thank various groups of people who have volunteered in support of the School this year. It was fantastic to have so many volunteers attend and a wonderful opportunity for the Chair of the Board, Glenda McLoughlin, to express our sincere gratitude. The RPFA have provided incredible support throughout the year in organising such a wide range of events to bring the community together and providing fundraising support to the School. One such example was the provision of morning tea treats for all staff on World Teachers’ Day, last Friday. This gesture of appreciation is sincerely valued by staff.

I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to attend the Redlands Melbourne Cup Luncheon on Tuesday and join a table with a group of Redlands House and Yr 6 parents. Having to wait several years to run the event, there was an energy of expectation in the room and the sense of fun and laughter pervaded the entire event. My thanks to the team of Redlands staff who made it all possible and for the very generous support of the community that enabled over $30,000 to be raised for the means-tested Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship.

ISA CODE OF CONDUCT

As we move into round 2 of the Summer ISA Sporting Season, we would like to draw your attention to the ISA Code of Conduct for both Players and Spectators. The full document is available on the  Secondary School Sport page of Redlands Pulse and we encourage all parents and players to familiarise themselves with the expectations when participating in participating in ISA Sporting competitions.

GUIDELINES FOR PLAYERS

2.1       Once committed to a sport for the season, players must honour that commitment wholeheartedly. This same commitment applies to ISA representation. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

2.2       Players are expected to be modest in success and generous in defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion.  (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.3       Players are also expected to acknowledge, willingly and openly, good play by either school. Players should not celebrate the opposition’s mistakes. (Level of breach: 1)

2.4       Players should be positive in their approach to games and should adhere strictly to the rules/laws and spirit of the game.  The referee or umpire’s decision is final, and the Captain of the team is the only one who may ask for clarification of a decision at the appropriate time. (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.5       The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.6       Players shall never resort to violent or abusive language or behaviour or engage in unfair or illegal tactics to gain an advantage.  Racial vilification will not be tolerated under any circumstances. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.7        Players should be punctual and adhere to their school’s dress code.  The home team – and in particular the Captain should welcome the visiting team and its Captain.  At the conclusion of the game acknowledgment and thanks should be given to referees, umpires, officials such as scorers/touch judges and the opposition. (Level of breach: 1)

GUIDELINES FOR SPECTATORS

3.1       Spectators must remember that this is “kids” school sport, let them have fun. It is not the World Cup.

3.2       Spectators are expected to be positive role models. They must behave respectfully and courteously towards players, coaches, match officials and other spectators. (Level of breach: 1, 2 and 3)

3.3       Spectators are not to approach or address game officials or any of the opposing players, spectators or staff.  If a spectator has a genuine concern, this needs to be presented to their own school official who will determine any action to be taken. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.4       Unless invited onto a field/court, spectators must never encroach onto the field/court. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.5       Barracking should be enthusiastic and positive, but not designed to heckle, denigrate or unsettle opponents.  For example, barracking during a free throw or a kick at goal and so forth is always bad sportsmanship.  (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.6       Sledging and negative comments are totally unacceptable. Good play by either team should be recognised by applause. (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.7       It is never right to express disapproval of a referee or umpire’s decision, irrespective of his/her age. The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.8       Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence, rough or illegal play.  (Level of breach 2 or 3)

3.9       Visitors to the grounds should co-operate fully with any regulations or requests made by the host school, such as car parking, seating, dressing rooms and the placing of spectators.  At all times visitors should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave.  (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.10      Alcohol is not to be consumed at ISA fixtures. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

Basketball

Round 2 saw some fantastic results across the Basketball program. The Girls Basketball program is going from strength to strength, continuing their great Round 1 form. With the 1st Girls having a fantastic win over a very strong Barker team, the Inter A Girls having another huge victory and the Junior A Girls narrowly losing to Barker in the finals minutes, it is evident the Girls Basketball program can compete with the top schools in the ISA competition. The Junior B, Junior C and Inter B Girls also finished with a win on Saturday.

The Boys Basketball program showed some great signs in Round 2. Whilst there were mixed results across the day, it was great to see that defensive effort from all teams as a highlight. A big thank you to the players who stepped up and played multiple games on Saturday when we were missing students due to Year 9 Camp.

Best of luck to all of our teams in Round 3 of the ISA Basketball Season this Saturday 5 November. A reminder the Saturday fixture details can be found on the Redlands Pulse – Fixtures tab and are also visible on your student calendar.

Touch Football

Round 2 Recap: Touch Football

Another sunshine filled Saturday resulted in a mixed bag of results, a special mention to our Senior 3 Boys and Junior B Boys who took fantastic wins.

A handful of incredibly close score lines showed great development across the Touch Football Program.

We look forward to another week of games!

Rowing

Last weekend saw our rowers attend the Head of the Lake time trial regatta on Lake Macquarie. Our senior students were to complete over a 10km course while the Year 8 students competed over the 5km distance.

The weather did not play its part and high winds caused the course to be shortened. Our seniors handled the more than challenging conditions well with some strong performances however the regatta was cancelled before the Year 8 students had a chance to race.

Our Boys 1st crew won the Men’s Under 19 Coxed Quad division, finishing with the second fasted time of the regatta while our Girls 1st crew also won the Women’s Under 19 Coxed Quad with the 4th fasted time overall and our Girls 2nd crew finished 2nd in the same division with the 7th fasted time overall.

Our Year 7 students still managed to compete against the Year 7 students from both Newcastle Grammar School and Hunter Valley Grammar School where they handled themselves well. We are very excited to see them race next weekend in Canberra on Sat 12 November.

Tennis

Students should be commended for excellent match play over the weekend with many close games going to tiebreaker! NSTA 8 player Emilia Stucci in particular made an impressive comeback from 1-5 down against opponents St Pius, winning in the tiebreaker, and we would like to acknowledge her resilience and effort! We hope to see great matches again this weekend for Round 3. Please make sure students, parents and carers are checking the draw and playing roster regularly, especially before the weekend, as changes can be made weekly.

Please contact Ms Caitlin Wong should you have any questions regarding Summer Tennis.

Sailing

Last weekend our sailors competed in their third Redlands series race day. Conditions were much breezier than the first week, challenging our sailors boat handling skills and teamwork. Picket fencing the day (placing first in all races) in the Elliott racing was sailing captain Oliver Noakes and his team Jerry Sun, Otis Cooper, Amelia Foulstone and Hamish Kennedy. In the Pacers, Alissandra Braden and Ruby Gasmus also picket fenced the day, closely followed by Max Nicholson and Hugo Christy.

Fitness Centre

Please be aware of the following changes to the use of the Redlands Fitness Centre. From next week Monday, students will not be able to leave school grounds at the conclusion of their sessions. Students are required to change back into their school uniforms and prepare for 1st Period. To assist with this transition, the Fitness Centre will now be open from 6:30am – 7:55am with students able to join throughout the morning.

We have had brilliant numbers through the Fitness Centre over the past week with students from all Age-Groups utilizing the space across all morning sessions. The Fitness Centre is the perfect space for students to build strength, speed and flexibility, key components of all Rep. Sports at Redlands.

The Fitness Centre is an open and inclusive space for all Redlands athletes and, with sessions across all mornings, Monday to Friday, this is a space that can be used by all Age-Groups across the week.

Sessions start promptly at 6:30am and have sessions tailored towards athletes of any ability, size or skill.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following:

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development, Mr Jack Gooding  jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au  for any specific questions regarding these sessions or the Fitness Centre space as a whole.

Rugby 7s

Please be aware that there will be a meeting for all Year 12 Students wishing to trial for the Redlands Rugby 1st XV next season.

The meeting will be held on Level 2 of the Learning Hub during lunchtime on Monday 7 November. This meeting will cover our Preseason Planning, expectations and also information about positional selections and details.

There will be a meeting in the following week (Monday 14 November) which will also contain our Year 11 Group as well as nominated Year 10s.

I look forward to catching up with all of you.

Looking Forward and Looking Back

As we approach the middle point of the term we are simultaneously looking forward and looking back. Most students have completed their exams and are working through feedback with their teachers. Reflection is a powerful part of learning and perhaps the most useful aspect of exam-taking occurs after the process, when students and teachers consider the effectiveness of teaching and learning by deep diving into concepts or skills that have been deeply embedded and those which have not. In my conversations with students, most appear fairly content with how they managed the exam block – ‘some were good and others were a bit harder’ and ‘I felt a bit stressed on the first day, but I am okay now’ were fairly typical responses. It’s probably the more senior students, those in Yr 10 and Yr 12, who are busy reflecting whilst also looking forward to the end of the term, and to next year. I met briefly with Yr 10 this week for their second Senior School Orientation session and reminded them to use the exam process to confirm priorities for 2023. Our Yr 10 students have chosen their pathway (HSC or IB) and the subjects of study within this pathway. Now is the time to consider any possible changes and to seek out relevant staff members for support, if need be. Yr 12 have also been reminded to look forward to assessments and back on revision. This is the Dean of HSC, Ms Lucy Benjamin’s mantra to the HSC students when they visit her for their data-story conversations.

Mentoring Opportunities

Our Yr 12 students have been invited to apply for a mentor to support their HSC or IB journey. They were asked to choose between an alumni mentor, or a staff member. 41 students across both pathways have signed up for the program, and our Deans of HSC and IB are now working with our alumni team and staff to allocate the students to the most suitable person who can support them in the coming months. The Mentoring Program will begin later this term.

Appreciation and Support

Last week we took time to acknowledge and value our wellbeing, inspired by October’s Mental Health Month. Our fantastic and supportive HR Team provided delicious cupcakes and a wellness journal for all staff members, early on in the week.

Then later in the week, on Friday, the RPFA’s World Teacher Day morning tea was another opportunity for staff to gather and be acknowledged for their many contributions. It was certainly a week of sweet treats for the Secondary School staff, and we sincerely thank ll members of the RPFA who supported this event, and have shown their ongoing support this year. Recently, we held our final Secondary School Parent Contact Group (SSPCG) meeting for 2022, ably chaired by Ms Kate Kesby, mum to Annabel and Oliver. Kate has been a great support to me over the past two years, in her role as SSPCG chair. Her genuine support for the School and desire to offer transparency and clarity for parents has been greatly welcomed.

Yr 9 Camp to Arnhem Land

Finally, Eddy Atkins, Head of Outdoor Education and Winter School, was overjoyed this week to report back that the Yr 9 Cultural Immersion in East Arnhem Land was something special. A brief report from Mr Atkins:

“It is hard to imagine what it’s going to be like until you step foot off that plane at Gove Airport. Making your way from the airport to the Gulkula Site, you are surrounded by red earth and thick bushland. Dirt roads and road trains let you know that you have entered a unique place that not many people get to experience. On arrival we were given a very special and meaningful ‘Welcome to Country’. This memorable ceremony really set-up the rest of the week which was filled with so many wonderful activities that helped to bring together our two different cultures and beliefs. The openness and kind heartedness shown to us by the Yolngu people was truly amazing and allowed all of us to become part of their family for the week. The experience will be one that I hold onto for the rest of my life. I am so very grateful for the opportunity given to me to be part of such a special program.”

Lismore Christmas Appeal

For most in our community, Christmas is a time for joy and celebration. But for many in Lismore, who lost homes and businesses in the recent flooding and are in the early stages of a costly disaster recovery, this holiday season will be one of hardship.

This term, we are calling on the generosity of our Redlands community to support the residents of Lismore.

To support this cause, please bring a new children’s gift to your Tutor class in Weeks 5 and 6.

We are asking each student to donate a small Christmas gift to the Northern Rivers Children’s Services. We hope these donated gifts will bring joy to a number of families this Christmas season.

To support this cause, please bring a new children’s gift to your Tutor class in Weeks 5 and 6.

Harbour Cruise Info and Early Dismissal

Thank you for purchasing tickets for the Harbour Cruise next Friday 4 November with Captain Cook Cruises. Students are all very excited and seem to be looking forward to this evening event together. Please see reminders below.

  • Yr 10 will be allowed to leave school at lunch tomorrow by signing out by the Gerard St Exit (outside the Student Services Centre). If your child needs to stay on campus, students may remain on campus for supervised study.  Students are expected to be in their regular time-tabled classes for Periods 1-4.  If they are absent Periods 1-4, a medical certificate will need to be submitted to SSAbsence@redlands.nswe.edu.au.
  • Students are to arrive at Darling Harbour Wharf 1, King Street Wharf, at 6.30pm, no later than 6.45pm, to ensure we can close boarding and begin the evening’s festivities at 7pm. Additional time does need to be allocated for security checks run by Captain Cook.
  • Students are meant to wear formal or semi-formal attire (i.e. suits, pantsuits, long dresses, midi-length dresses) and appropriate footwear to be comfortable walking around on a boat. A spare pair of flat shoes was recommended for any students planning to wear heels throughout the evening. Students are not able to take shoes off and walk around barefoot.
  • While many outfits are currently fashionable with cut-outs or portions of sheer fabric, students have been reminded that their outfit choices should be appropriate for a school event and we want everyone to be comfortable throughout the evening. On the off chance that a student does arrive with inappropriate attire, the student will be asked to put something over their outfit to cover appropriately.

We are looking forward to properly congratulating and celebrating Yr 10 for their incredible efforts, focus, engagement and leadership demonstrated this year.

Yr 10 Camp Reminders

We are looking forward to an adventurous and exciting camp next week in Myall Lakes.  Please see below for additional reminders.

I have also attached a Camp – Redlands Engage Excursion Medical Details Check
  • Student need a negative RAT test before coming to school Monday morning. Students do not need proof of this. However, if students test positive or display cold/flu symptoms, students should not come to camp.
  • Students were reminded today to have hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, additional socks and shoes and to check OEG website for the packing list. Some rain is predicted for next week so extra shoes and socks is necessary.

A friendly reminder that students need to be dropped off at 6.30am on Monday 7 November in the Undercroft as the buses will be departing at 7am.

Tomorrow Woman Reflection

This week, our she/her students participated in the Her Code workshop run by an incredibly dynamic group from Tomorrow Woman. The workshop included time for students to identify and acknowledge the expectations and demands they feel society puts on them, the challenges these expectations create and the amount of space these concerns take in a young person’s head throughout each day.  Some confronting statistics were shared in regards to how Australian females see themselves, their confidence, their own body image and mental health concerns. Students were also empowered to be brave, to own their own personal growth and development and to learn how to be there for one another if a peer shares their own concerns with them.

Some comments throughout the morning and after the workshop included:

” The statistics were devastating to see but not surprising “

” I never thought my friend felt that way too ”

” I didn’t realise how many females felt that, I thought I was the only one “

” So many expectations get put on us from social media and advertisements, we need to be aware these are aimed at us and we need to know how to question, challenge and talk about these pressures.”

” I find my friends are so brave and I admire them.”

Camp Reflections

Reflection – Angus McInnes

Last week, the Yr 9 students were presented with the eye-opening opportunity to travel up to Arnhem Land, in the Northern territory. Located near the small town of Nhulunbuy, the Culture College Campus is in one of the most remote parts of Australia, only accessible via a 675km long dirt road from Darwin or a flight into the Gove/Nhulunbuy.

For Group B, our adventure began at 5:30 am on Sunday morning and after a short drive to the Sydney Domestic Airport and a relatively fast trip through check-in and security, we boarded the plane. Three hours later, we landed in Cairns and met up with Group A, who had travelled to Cairns via a short layover in Brisbane. After around an hour to purchase lunch in Cairns Airport, we boarded the Air North Embraer E170 and E190 jets, and departed the 110-minute flight. Following a bumpy landing we collected our baggage and hopped into buses for the 30-minute drive to the campus.

After being placed into our groups, we jumped straight into our cultural immersion, beginning with a welcome to country and traditional Yolngu Smoking Ceremony. We then settled into camp, met the people we would be spending our week with and had afternoon tea alongside a game of AFL with the Yolngu kids. At dinner, we sat with our groups and were given the first of our five delicious meals and then returned to camp to sit around the campfire and reflect on our long day.

The following morning, after a night of what many would describe as disturbed sleep, a result of both jet lag and overwhelming heat, we were given between 5 and 7 to watch the incredible sunrise, shower and greet our friends. For my group, Maranydjalk, which means stingray, we spent the morning sitting in the forum, an open-air room, learning some basics of the language spoken by the Yolngu people. We learnt how to reply to and answer questions such as ‘what is your name?’, ‘how are you?’ and ‘see you later’. Following lunch, we were taught by Yolngu elders how to create traditional Indigenous paintings and spent much of the afternoon slowly making our own. We then got a bus out to East Woody beach, where we walked to a rocky outcrop and watched the sunset. One of the most incredible parts of the excursion was looking out into the Arafura Sea, as the setting sun illuminated the sky orange, and seeing a turtle come up for a breath and swim around the surface for around 30 seconds. The night ended with dinner and circle time around the fire, discussing the experiences of the day and how we were feeling following our first full day in Arnhem land.

The next morning began in the same way, and after breakfast and a quick circle time to discuss everyone’s thoughts and the day ahead, we moved into the knowledge centre, a large air-conned facility looking out over East Arnhem land. Here, we learnt about ROM, which is what we would view as lore. We learnt about the consequences of disobeying rules, rapirri, which is effectively respect, the knowledge structure of each clan including who gets to know what, alongside lots more information about the structure of this culture, and how it differs from ours. Following lunch, we split into groups to conduct the sacred men and women’s business. Boys spent the next two hours learning how to throw spears and make spear throwers, while girls were taught how to weave. Following afternoon tea, we learnt about kinship, and the extremely complex family trees involving skin names to maintain a perfect bloodline. The night ended with a fire yarn, where a large group of people sit around a fire and share skills and stories (a yarn is like a conversation or talk).

The following morning, we ate breakfast and got ready as usual, and then the whole year split into male and female groups. The boys returned to the forum to conduct men’s business, with people spread all over. Activities consisted of throwing spears, making and painting spear throwers, making fire, making spears, playing the didgeridoo, dancing and speaking to Yolngu people. This went on for the whole day, with breaks in between for meals and snacks. The girls experienced spiritual healing and learnt more about how to weave. That night, we went and lay out on the large opening where the smoking ceremony had been conducted at the time of our arrival, and looked up at the clear sky, completely untouched by light pollution. We were taught about space, but in a way that combined both the ancient Yolngu stories and the wonders of modern science. We were also given the opportunity to look through the telescope multiple times and look at wonders such as binary stars and nebulas.

Our second last morning in Arnhem land began like every other, however we quickly departed breakfast to get into 4×4 cars where we sat in groups of 3-8 (depending on the size of the vehicle) and embarked on an hour of four wheel driving over a dirt road to get to Macassan beach, where Indonesian traders first reached the Yolngu people and traded valuable resources such as steel and rubber with them for over 1000 years. That afternoon, we drove out to the small town of Yirrkala to see the art gallery, where we learnt about various pieces of art and were given the opportunity to look around and learn about the different types of artworks. That night was the giving back ceremony, where each group went up to the stage and contributed to the performance, demonstrating their new knowledge and their appreciation for the Yolngu people who had made the week possible. After we danced, ate dinner and got into bed in preparation for the early start.

On the final morning in Arnhem land, we got up at 4:30, packed our tents and bags away, and met at 5:00 for breakfast. At 5:45, we were all on buses to the airport, where after checking in, we had an hour or so before flying back out to Cairns. After a fast flight back to Cairns, we found ourselves with a 4-hour layover, with Group B departing on their flight to Sydney in the late afternoon. Just 30 minutes later, Group A found out that their connecting flight from Brisbane would be cancelled due to unexpected delays in Sydney. Nevertheless, they flew to Brisbane and had a last-minute stay in the 4.5 star Westin. Group B arrived in Sydney at around 9:00 PM and Group A arrived around midday the following day.

This camp was a once in a lifetime experience, changing many people’s perspective on their life and influencing how they might change the way that they live back home in Sydney. The experience was truly eye opening and I know that every Year 9 who was given this amazing opportunity is extremely grateful and enjoyed every part of it.

Reflection – Millie Winton

My time at Arnhem Land was something that I will never forget, and never want to forget.  This camp was different to any camp I had ever been to before and I am so truly grateful for the experience I had. I used to have a sense of anxiety around camp, I would always think about what could go wrong, the what ifs, yet during my time away I learnt that if you focus your entire life on the ‘what ifs’ you will never experience the ‘what is’. If you slow down your pace and take in the things around you, you can learn and appreciate so much more. This doesn’t only apply to camp, school, or anything else academic, but it can also apply to your life in general. At the start of this camp one of the members of the Yolngu community, Randy, told us that throughout this time we would be filling our cups of knowledge, then bringing that home and pouring the cups into the minds of people around us. Whilst this camp not only taught me and everybody else in my year so much, I think the most important part of it was how it taught us to teach others. Through all the fun times like sitting around the fire and hearing everybody’s stories, looking up at the stars with my friends, or even trading flavours of hydrolytes, I truly had the time of my life in Arnhem Land. A couple of people I want to shout out for their help in our time up there are Ferdinand, for always doing the dishes after every meal. Elenor, Sonia, Sophie, and Remy for being by my side and helping me every step of the way. Ms Vale and Ms Walker, we all know it wasn’t an easy job taking care of 150 kids over state borders but you both did such an incredible job. Mr Millham, you made us all think constantly when we were up there, obviously we were up there to learn about the culture, but we were actually there for so much more and you helped all of us realise that, I’m sure I speak for everyone in Dumalingu when I say you helped us grow as people. One final thing I learnt was the importance of listening, you don’t need to talk all the time, and so to keep this reflection short I want to leave everyone with one message, think deeper, everything isn’t as simple as the surface level you can see.

Reflection – Krishna Gupta

I have been honoured to visit Arnhem Land in the past week, and I am writing to express my gratitude. I thoroughly enjoyed discovering the Yolŋu law system and kinship and making friends with several of the Yolŋu citizens. I have gained a deeper understanding and heartfelt respect for these people. The connections among their community, and the kindness they displayed whilst providing this experience for us Year 9 students is simply unforgettable. The spear making, trips to the beach, cultural dancing and final ceremony were special moments for many throughout the week. Organising for over 150 students must have been an arduous task, and I appreciate the teachers who allowed this to occur so smoothly. This adventure will be a memory I hold forever. Thank you to everyone who was involved.

Reflection – Lara Prineas

Coming to this camp I didn’t know what to expect apart from what we were told, but once I arrived and later left, I knew that it was so much more than what was expected and every lesson I will never forget.

The most memorable lesson I had was learning from Marcus to “Fill your cup with knowledge and empty out that cup, sharing your knowledge with others”.

At first, I didn’t take in what he said but after a car ride with him to Macassons Beach, he easily pointed out each tree or flower and explained the use of it to Yolngu people. This small part of the large learning experience conveyed to me the strong connection between the people and the land, and that we can never stop learning and sharing our knowledge.

Reflection – Hannah Scott

Out of my 7 camps with Redlands, I can safely say that the recent trip to Arnhem Land was my personal favourite. I felt so welcomed from the minute I arrived. The First Nations People were all willing to share their knowledge and were so incredibly patient, especially during our ‘basket weaving’ activity which was a challenge to say the least. My favourite activity was definitely jewellery making. We made the jewellery with tiny seashells that were collected from the beach, cleaned and pierced individually with small holes. We explored the idea that when you need a new item or product, you don’t have to run to the store and buy something unsustainable – you can use nature’s resources and beauty, such as the natural seashells to make gorgeous jewellery. We also played bingo and instead of using plastic tokens, we utilised the natural shells, rocks, leaves, twigs etc. Overall, spending time with these amazing First Nations People allowed me to delve deeper into their thinking and ideologies, allowing me to reflect on what my morals are and what changes I can make to my personal thinking. A few words that are still stuck with me are “no one can ever change you, like the way you change yourself”.

Reflection – Daniel Koppers

Personally, the theme of Year 9 Camp for me was connection to land and people. My favourite activity was spear throwing using a ‘gatha’ and ‘galpu’ (spear and spear thrower). With help and guidance from a few of the Yolngu men (and quite a bit of practice) I was throwing accurately up to 15 metres. Not only was this activity fun but I also built a connection with these people. One of the local kids named Djari taught me how to play the ‘yidaki’ (didgeridoo) along with the hard skill of circular breathing. Through the multiple teachings throughout the week, I started to understand the ‘Rom’ (Yolngu lore system) and connection to the land. This was also due to how beautiful nature is up in Northeast Arnhem land. Later, however, as we were reflecting on our week, our group mentor pointed out his own frustration he had growing up as a child about the effects of colonialism on his people. This had an impact on me because even though I only had a small taste of this connection to the people and land I felt like I had lost something when we had to leave at the end of camp. This made me realise that I could only imagine what other First Nations people felt when everything they had was taken by ‘balanda’ (white men). I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have gone to this camp and have gotten so many physical and other skills out of it.

Reflection – Alexia van der Merwe

I really enjoyed and loved how warm and friendly the community was towards complete strangers. It’s embedded into their culture and their love for the land and all of its people really inspired me and made me think about how absent it is in western culture. I think most of all I loved spending time with the children of the families including Azalia, Djarry and Harry and playing footie with them on the Bungle ground.

A Huge THANK YOU to the fabulous Staff Team who travelled with Yr 9!

Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 15-22 April 2023

Following on from a wonderfully successful Year 9 Camp, in partnership with Culture College, we will be offering a Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 15-22 April 2023.

In this cultural immersion, students will and revisit build on the ideas they were introduced to on Year 9 Camp, consolidating knowledge and understanding. After a brief stay at the Gulkula site, students will travel to one of the Yolngu Homeland areas. This offers the opportunity for a much more personal, extensive and detailed exploration of Yolngu culture than was possible on the Year 9 Camp.

It would suit students who are ready and willing to consider more deeply the knowledge they gained and how to effect change for the future.

We intend to hold a Parent Information Session on Thursday 10 November at 6pm via Zoom and further details will be on Pulse early next week. The cost of the tour is $4,775.

Booking Forms will be available on Pulse after the Information Session and places can be secured upon return of the Booking Form and payment of a deposit directly to Culture College. Places are likely to be limited.

Head of Junior School

It has been wonderful to see and feel the sense of Spring this week as we approach the halfway point of the term. As is often the case at Redlands, our students have loved a number of experiential learning opportunities this past week, which I have highlighted below and the students’ engagement and enjoyment in these events has been highly evident.

Music Instrumental Program (MIP) Concert

This afternoon, alongside a wonderful audience of students, staff, parents and guests, I had the joy of watching the superb culmination of this year’s work in the Yrs 4 and 5 curriculum music ensemble program – affectionately called ‘MIP’.  Each year, the incoming Yr 4 cohort (and new Yr 5 students) begin their journey on an allocated Concert Band or String instrument. It was spectacular! 225 musicians – so many of whom have only been learning since the start of this year presented a dedicated, polished ensemble performance to thrill the crowd.

My gratitude and congratulations to the exceptionally talented team of Music teachers and tutors that we are blessed to have at Redlands and of course the stars of today’s show, our students.

Inquisitive Minds Mathematics Incursion

Pencils were sharpened and ready in hands, minds were reeling, brains firing and a palpable sense of excitement filled the air as every student in Yrs 3-6 took part in this week’s Inquisitive Minds Maths incursions. Over the course of the two days, every class participated in problem-solving relays to tackle mathematical wonders from tangram shapes and coloured sudokus to number problems of all shapes and sizes. Every student engaged in fun, hands-on, challenging learning experiences, practising perseverance and grit to solve problems.

Yrs 3 and 4 enjoyed a captivating afternoon session with Inquisitive Minds making towers, characters and cities with wooden planks. Leaning on mathematics and engineering knowledge, there were challenges to build the longest bridge, the tallest tower and the sturdiest shape. The collaboration and focus of the students during this hands-on activity was noticeable and also put a smile on every individual’s face.

Reflecting on the two days, it was fantastic to see so many students enjoying mathematical thinking in different contexts. Students used abstract reasoning, numerical understanding, spatial awareness and deductive reasoning to piece together pictorial and number puzzles. They were reminded that Mathematics is not just about formulas and algorithms. The purpose of mathematics educations is to teach students how to solve problems, find solutions and give things a go. We want students to build the tallest bridge, find the missing code and create the unimaginable.

The days seemed to ignite a passion for solving problems in many as well as presenting the opportunity to work as a team and to put together pieces of a puzzle to achieve something incredible. We also appreciated having Redlands students from Yr 7 and Yr 9 assist with the incursion and it was delightful to see them working closely with the younger students.

Yr 5 Leadership Workshop

Last Friday, Yr 5 enjoyed their second half day student leadership workshop led by Cameron Brown from Explore, Discover Act. Cameron has spent time with them throughout the year on leadership and this workshop was another important step in the year group’s journey towards their collective student leadership in 2023. I know that we will have no shortage of potential leaders and I will share further information on the process for student nomination and election in next week’s Note Day.

Surf Education

Our students have enjoyed the opportunity to complete the second week of their Surf Education sessions at Freshwater Beach. In the glorious sunshine, and as part of this annual program, the students developed increased beach awareness and safety skills which will be invaluable ahead of the summer holiday period.

As previously mentioned, our six-week Sustainable School Garden project led by ethnobotanist, David Harrington is well under way and the students have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions with David.

In Yrs 3 and 4, classes have been doing an audit of visible pollinators around the school using a pollinator check sheet and audit the school’s plantings for pollinator value. They have discussed species for pollinators and then planted appropriate species in the Allister St garden using bush regeneration techniques. A secondary goal has been to investigate and discuss what bush tucker species are already in the school.

In Yrs 5 and 6, each class has worked towards a common goal to refurbish and renovate our existing garden area and build two new garden beds that are sustainable and self-watering, using recycled materials. Students have been part of an initial site assessment and analysed the local garden microclimate using weather monitoring equipment, test the soil for pH, structure and organic material and calculated what materials are required to refurbish the existing beds.

2023 Student Orientation – Tuesday 8 November

Next Tuesday, we will welcome over fifty new students who will join the Junior School in 2023 as part of their process of orientation into Redlands. I know that our current students will warmly welcome their soon-to-be peers and for part of the day, Yrs 2, 3, 4 and 5 also move up a year to the Year Groups that they will be in next year.

This will allow them some time with possible new teachers, new students, and begin to get a feel of new learning spaces and expectations. The students will also rotate around each classroom doing a series of engaging activities and on the same day, our Yr 6 students will have a full day in the Secondary School as part of their transition.

Yr 1 Excursion to Vaucluse House

Yr 1 went back in time this week during a visit to the historic Vaucluse House. They toured the 19th Century mansion, learned about its history, the team of servants who worked there and what life was like for the children of the house. They got hands on with some Victorian games in the garden and even had a go at washing clothes the old-fashioned way. The day was full of fun and games as they learned how Victorian children lived and played.

Below is a recount of the day by Eisen Chan.

Have you ever been to a fancy house called Vaucluse House? If you have never heard of it or been there, yesterday all of the Year One classes went to Vaucluse House. Once we arrived, we had our recess.

A while later, we played games from the 1850s. Some of the games were skittles, skipping, rolling a hoop, quoits and croquet.

After that, we went inside a massive house. It belonged to a very rich family called the Wentworth family. They had 40 servants and each of them had a job. One of the rooms was a very fancy room called the drawing room. It was where the children couldn’t go until they were 15. The children had to stay in a room called a nursery.

Some of the differences were that they didn’t have running water and most of the games’ materials were wood or rope. The grownups had three mattresses. One was stuffed with hay, another with horse hair and the top one with feathers. The servants just had one hay mattress. Something that’s the same is that we still do skipping.

I liked going inside the house so I could learn more about each room.

Prep Presentation Day

After two years of remote performances, we are very excited to announce that Prep Presentation Day will take place in the Dunnet Hall on Tuesday 6 December. We will be using the free online Trybooking system to allocate seating and to ensure equity, the number of seats will be limited to two per family. There may be opportunity to request extra tickets closer to the event but we respectfully request that you do not book more than 2 tickets on Trybooking. Any remaining seats that are available when Trybooking has closed will be distributed on a first come, first in basis.

The Trybooking system will be accessible from 7.00pm Friday 11 November. The site is locked until this time and will close on Friday 18 November at 7.00pm. No bookings can be made after this time.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Excursion to the Coal Loader

It was with great excitement that the Seniors and Transition Gold students boarded the bus bound for the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability at Ball Head, Waverton. It was wonderful for the children to experience first hand this platform for the delivery of a wide range of sustainability programs. We saw how they transformed the old coal loading platform into a green roof and public open space for North Sydney and really enjoyed exploring one of the 160m tunnels from the historic coal loading system. In Tunnel 1 and saw the original coal feeder and cart still in situ. We also enjoyed seeing the indigenous rocks carving, chicken coop and open green spaces.

A special thank you to the wonderful parent helpers who accompanied us on the excursion. These events would not be possible without your assistance.

Music

Alongside a record throng of parents, I had the immense joy this afternoon of watching the culmination of this year’s work in the Yrs 4 and 5 Curriculum Music Ensemble program – affectionately called MIP.  Each year, the incoming Yr 4 cohort (and new Yr 5 students) begin their journey on an allocated Concert Band or String instrument. 225 musicians – so many of whom have only been learning since the start of this year presented a dedicated, polished ensemble performance.

Ms Moses presented a fantastic information session yesterday for our Yr 3 parents in readiness for MIP next year, with excitement already growing for the next stream!  The net result of all of this work is evidenced in our burgeoning Intermediate and Advanced Concert Bands and String Ensembles in the Secondary School. We are very proud of our Prep and Junior students for their work this year, with heartfelt thanks owed to Ms Moses for facilitating the program, and to Mr Guha, Ms Breckenridge, teachers, tutors and administrators for their year round support that ensures the ongoing success of these experiences.

I can’t wait to see what our Junior Campus Strings Concert on Monday offers us.

See you there!

Spotlight on Transition Gold

Transition Gold have been exploring the musical concept of pulse through movement using Japanese Paper Balloons (which self-inflate) whilst listening to the piece Fly by Ludovico Einaudi. You could see the concentration on their faces as they not only had to show body awareness but also keeping in time to the music with their Japanese Paper Balloons! The students loved it so much, especially trying to keep the balloons in the air. Thank you Mrs Roberts for facilitating this exciting learning for TG.

That concludes our formal assessments for the year – with Yrs 7-10 all moving on with their exciting project-based learning for the remainder of the year.
