Christmas Cards

Thank you to all our creative artists who participated in this wonderful initiative. The selection panel received over 60 artworks from all age groups with an incredible range of diversity reflecting the multi-cultural backgrounds we enjoy at Redlands. With so many wonderful submissions, the final judging was very difficult! The judging panel included Mrs Ainslie Breckenridge, Head of Preparatory School and Redlands House, Ms Paula Reinhold, Junior School Visual Arts Teacher, Ms Fiona McKenzie, Junior Campus Chaplain and Mrs Caroline Jane, Alumni and Community Relations Manager.

“We were thrilled with how positive the response was from our students to support a project which will benefit families in need. Proceeds raised will be donated to the Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker Appeal.” Ainslie Breckenridge, Head of Preparatory School.

Thank you everyone who participated in this initiative. Ten artworks were selected to feature in this year’s Redlands Spirit of Christmas card set of 10 images. Congratulations to all the winners who will be acknowledged with a gift of appreciation during their assembly.

Aimee Kang, 4B: “Santa gets bored of flying sleighs sometimes. He decorates the Christmas tree then surfs to your house. That’s why your house may be slightly wet in the morning.”

Anya Price, 5W: “A reindeer symbol of strength, kindness and joyful spirit which we are all in need of in these tough times.”

Yasmin Allan and Bianca Neill 6W: “We were inspired by an Australian Christmas. Just because we don’t have snow doesn’t mean we can’t have a fabulous celebration. We chose a koala who are in danger and are worth protecting, we want to protect the Australian Christmas too.”

Elizabeth Grinham, 5R: “I have done this artwork because my family always goes to the beach on Christmas Day. There is always someone dressed up as Santa!” It is pictured at the top.

Julia Bush, Milli (Milehna) Meyer and Fiona Russell, 3Y: “We chose to draw a Christmas tree with presents around it because it represents the Christmas spirit and tradition. It is when Jesus was born.”

Leo Wei, 2R: “My drawing is of the Wise Men who are on a journey to follow the star to the light.”

Pax 2Y, Ziggy 1Y, Hendrix RH Seniors and Bowie Staley-Lobos (RH Juniors 2021): “We chose to do our Christmas card about family because that’s what Christmas is all about to us. Everyone deserves to feel loved every day especially at Christmas.”

Samantha Beck, 5Y: “An Australian Christmas, perfectly captures the unique 2020 Australian Christmas to me as it highlights our endangered koalas from the recent summer bushfires where many of their lives were lost. koalas were hurt and their habitats destroyed. My card design is also particularly special as the koala wears a facemask, which represents the COVID-19 global pandemic. Although I highlight two sad events – I hope my artwork brings laughter, joy and Christmas spirit.”

Sibella Collie, RH: “Christmas morning.”

Viraj Tandon, 3B: “I have made a portrait of Mother Mary and Baby Jesus in the Byzantine style. Mother Mary is cradling Baby Jesus in her arms. They are both wearing crimson and gold robes and surrounded by a divine halo.”

The Redlands Spirit of Christmas Cards are available to purchase here. Cost: $25 / pack of 10 or $40 / pack of 20. Delivery expected from Week 5. All proceeds are being donated to Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker Appeal.

This session is an opportunity for our current and new Yr 1 and 2 students to have their own orientation. Please be aware that each class will be going up to their new grade in their current classes and will be allocated a teacher to spend their time with. The teacher they have for that session will not necessarily be their class teacher for 2021. It will also be an opportunity for any new students entering Yrs 1 and 2 to meet their new peers and familiarise themselves with the environment.

Around Prep This Week

This week we celebrate everything French as our Prep Information Board bursts with evidence of learning from our French classes. Our enthusiastic French teacher, Mrs Sylvia Merlot has created an interactive board for our students to share their learning. Learning language in Prep is such an important skill as It broadens our learners’ horizons. It not only provides your child with the starter skills to speak, write and read key words and phrases in a foreign language, but will typically also give insight into the history and culture of societies where the language is used.

Thank you Mrs Merlot for all you do to bring French to life for us all.

Kindergarten enjoyed their Coastal Excursion to Narrabeen on Wednesday. The rain held off long enough for our students and staff to enjoy the outdoor experience of creating, exploring and investigating the coastal environment. The highlight of my week was watching them return tired, content and filled with joy after their excursion. Thank you to Mrs Finlayson and the staff for making the experience so much fun for all.

Our Yr 1 students participated in AGAT testing this week. The ACER General Ability Tests (AGAT) is a series of tests designed to assist teachers of students aged 7 to 16 years (approximately Yrs 2-10) in their assessment of students’ general reasoning ability. The information gained will provide immediate information to our teaching and learning support staff as they reflect upon and plan for future learning experiences. The results also help us to start creating a data narrative for each student so we can track individual progress at Redlands.

Our Yr 2 and Yr 4 students sat the Allwell tests this week. Using the Allwell Academic Assessments, the testing assesses students using a suite of assessments relevant to ability and achievement. The ability measures are general reasoning, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. The tests of achievement are in mathematics, reading comprehension, spelling and writing. Of course, this assessment will be just one in a suite of data measures that our teachers, Learning Plus team and Dean of Teaching and Learning will use to monitor and track student progress and achievement.

Staff Appreciation Day – Friday 30 October

It has been an extraordinary year and one that all of us will never forget! This year the teachers and staff of Redlands have gone above and beyond what we ever could have expected. At Redlands, we traditionally hold a morning tea to thank our teachers on Teacher Appreciation Day and parents provide the sweet and savoury treats. This year, we are extending our thank you to all Redlands staff and instead of a morning tea, we are showing our appreciation in the form of a small gift for each member of staff that we have sourced from the Buy from the Bush Campaign for Bushfire relief. The RPFA sourced some delicious cookies that were individually wrapped for each staff member. Thanks to everyone who made a contribution to this effort.

Second Hand Book Sale

Towards the end of Term 4, the RPFA is going to facilitate the sale of second hand textbooks in the Secondary School. The aim of this is to reduce landfill and waste for our textbooks once we have completed our academic year, and to ease the financial burden on families as they organise textbooks needed for 2021. Students will be able to buy and sell books – more information will be shared over the coming weeks; we know many of you are still using them to study for exams right now!

Walks on Tracks

We will be walking from Sirius Cove to Clifton Gardens next Wednesday 4 November from 8.40am. Meet at Bradleys Head Road/Middle Head Road roundabout. For more information, please contact Ann Marie Kimber on 0406691533 or amkimber@gmail.com.

Book Club

Redlands Book Club welcomes Redlands parents and alumni meeting twice a term to discuss a book in a welcoming, social environment. Our recent meeting discussed American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins, which we would all highly recommend, to raise awareness of the plight of central American refugees.

Our next Book Club will be held on Friday 4 December to discuss Kate Grenville’s A Room Made of Leaves – a fictional account of our early colonial days featuring Elizabeth Macarthur. Please contact Lerida Grant for more details on lerida@bigpond.net.au.

From the Principal

NSW is celebrating World Teachers’ Day on Friday 30 October. The challenges of 2020 have certainly illuminated the importance of teaching as a vocation and the skill, dedication and professionalism of teachers.

Whenever students have asked me about teaching as a potential career choice, I strongly encourage them to explore it further, and am quick to refer to how rewarding it is to work in education and help support young people as they grow and flourish.

I recall some years ago gathering with a range of professionals after a basketball game, when one of the group was sharing how he was struggling for motivation and purpose in his choice of career. He posed an open question to the group, “how many of you love what you do?”. I was shocked as I looked around the group of highly qualified ex-university friends, to see no hands go up, except my own. As you can imagine an interesting conversation followed, which included one person seriously considering a career change into education.

I have been inspired by the way that our staff have responded to the significant challenges that they have faced this year. It has required a total team effort and as I have mentioned many times, all our dedicated team of teaching, support and operational staff have made this possible.

I am most grateful to the RPFA for their wonderful and most generous gesture of providing Redlands branded quality biscuits to every staff member at the School this week to celebrate World Teachers’ Day and acknowledge the fantastic team effort. Gestures like this really matter and are greatly appreciated by staff. One of the key strengths of the School that many staff have shared with me is the support and positive partnership we share with parents and carers, who value their connection and contribution to the School.

My thanks once again to all members of the RPFA for their dedication and support this year and for always looking for creative ways to stay connected and contribute. I am looking forward to the RPFA AGM this evening, as we thank and acknowledge the service of this year’s committee and together look ahead positively towards 2021.

Innovative Design Exhibition/Fashion Show

The annual HSC Major Works exhibition for Design and Technology, Textiles and Design, and Yrs 10-11 Textiles fashion show is planned for Wednesday 4 November. Due to COVID restrictions, parents are unfortunately not able to attend, however a video of the event will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse the following week.

Thank You

This Friday 30 October is Teacher Appreciation Day and for the last few years the parent and student communities have used this day as an opportunity to express their gratitude and appreciation for all Redlands staff members in the form of a Staff Appreciation Morning Tea on the day. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to hold this morning tea this year as we have in previous years. However, on Tuesday our new student leaders went around to various staffrooms to deliver individually wrapped biscuits for each staff member throughout the Redlands community to say “Thank You” for their efforts this year. This gesture of appreciation by the parents and students meant so much to all of us and the personal deliveries by students made it even more special. So, on behalf all of the staff in the Secondary School, I would like to say “Thank You” to you. We are fortunate to be part of such a special Redlands community.

Summer Sports Update

It was great to see many of our summer sports teams commence their ISA seasons last weekend. I know many students have been waiting since early Term 3 to return to interschool sports, and we saw great spirit and many excellent results across the courts and fields on Saturday. We are trying to best support and manage parent attendance at these fixtures and ask parents to refer to communications from the Sports Department for specific arrangements at individual venues.

Camps

As communicated at the beginning of the term, we are pleased to note that our school camps are able to recommence this term. Accordingly, we will now run our Yr 8 Camp to Yarrahapinni and our Yr 10 Camp to Myall Lakes in Week 5 from Monday 9 – Friday 13 November and information has been sent to parents regarding arrangements for these camps. In addition, while we are unable to have our Yr 9 students travel to Arnhem Land for their camp, we are pleased to have been able to arrange for an indigenous cultural immersion experience on campus for Yr 9 students in Week 6 from Tuesday 17 – Friday 20 November and more information will be sent to students and parents about this experience.

In addition, we have been able to reschedule this term’s postponed Yr 11 Camp to Week 2 of Term 1 next year from Monday 1 – Friday 5 February. We are thrilled that this valuable and much loved camp experience will now occur for our new Yr 12 students at the beginning of next year. We will ensure academic deadlines are rescheduled so that students can get the most out of this experience and more information will be sent home to Class of 2021 students and parents in the coming weeks. Finally, the rescheduling of the Yr 11 Camp to the beginning of Yr 12 has meant that the Yr 7 Camp will be moved to the following week from Monday 8 – Friday 12 February.

Leadership System

On Tuesday our new student leaders introduced themselves and their vision to our school community through an assembly video that was played to students during Tutor Period. I commend our new student leaders for their vision of inclusivity, optimism and opportunity as focus areas for Secondary School this year and their slogan of “Press Play” as a way to encourage students to get involved and have fun. These aims are a wonderful response to the challenges we have faced this past year and I look forward to seeing their initiatives take shape over the coming months.

Today I spoke to all of our rising Yr 12 students about the leadership roles they will be playing in our new leadership model. The vast majority of them have put their name forward to be considered for a School Prefect this year and they will have the opportunity to take on many of these responsibilities over the coming months. Over the remainder of this term and next year, all of the students who have nominated to be considered for School Prefect this year will be performing various gate and playground duties in this role. We are hopeful that their theme of inclusivity will extend to the whole Year Group having the opportunity to take on these leadership responsibilities.

Yrs 7 – 10 Examinations

This week, students in Yrs 7 and 10 have been sitting their Yearly Examinations and next week, students in Yrs 8 and 9 will be doing the same. Assessments such as these are an important tool in assessing students’ learning and we would hope all students prepare and revise accordingly so that they are giving their very best effort and are achieving their own personal bests. However, it is also important that students and parents see these examinations as just one in a number of different assessments of student learning over the course of the year. The final results and marks are not nearly as important as the habits of and approaches towards learning that students have developed over the course of the year or will further develop in the reflection and evaluation of their learning after these assessments so that they can best develop strategies for future improvement. We encourage all students to continue to develop this type of “growth mindset” towards their learning at school and I hope students in Yrs 7-10 put into practice this approach over the coming weeks.

CanTeen Bandana Day

Last Friday 23 October, the Secondary School was awash with bright colours as many staff and students were wearing bandannas that they bought throughout the week as part of CanTeen’s Bandanna Day. I would like to acknowledge our new Service Captains, Laura Sidoti and Harrison Winton, as well as many other rising Yr 12 students who helped lead this initiative. The money we raised will go to CanTeen to provide many different support services for young people aged 12-25 who have been affected by cancer.

Library

Last week, Book Week, with its theme of Curious Creatures Wild Minds, was celebrated across the whole school. The Junior Campus was awash with wild minds and curious creatures as students and teachers dressed in character. On the Senior Campus, as it coincided with the first week of the HSC, we celebrated more quietly.

Tristan Bancks and Yr 8 had a “Zoom experience” this year. Tristan shared his writing process with students and discussed his novel Detention (shortlisted in the Younger Readers category this year). Top tips included constant redrafting and use of concrete details to enrich the writing. He spoke about episodes from his childhood that somewhat transformed, which have found their way into his work. Each novel follows a slightly different process. In particular, he highlighted the inspirations for his novel Detention, including the news stories around refugees. He also discussed some of his favourite reads including Once by Maurice Gleitzman, Jack Heath’s 500 minutes of Danger and Gabriel Lord’s Fortress. In short, an empowering presentation, which not only encouraged and inspired wide reading but also gave top tips for creative writing.

Next year the theme is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds and while we look forward to celebrating in 21 -27 August, the readers of Redlands will be celebrating and enjoying books all year as the value of reading is always important. Old Worlds will take us to places in the past; Once by Maurice Gleitzman (World War 2) or Bring up the Bodies (Tudor England) by Hilary Mantel or Chains (American War of Independence) by Lauren Halse Anderson. In these works and others like them, we experience via our imaginations what it was like to live in other times and places. We come to understand how the protagonists overcame the limitations of their time and discover a common humanity. Science fiction can take us to new worlds. Classics, like Frank Herbert’s Dune or The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood, or even The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, allow us to see our world in a new light and catch a glimpse of possible futures.

Reading enriches our imagination, increases our emotional empathy and opens windows to the world. Start exploring these new worlds now.

Yr 7 2021 Transition

On Monday 9 November, ten of our Yr 12 students will be assisting with the transition of Year 7 2021. Our Yr 12 students will visit the Junior School and meet students in Yr 6. This will be an opportunity for our Yr 12s to forge relationships with our new Yr 7 students and to answer any questions they may have about school life in the Secondary School. Students can email me to express their interest in participating in this worthwhile event.

Expectations for Students Seeking to Attain School Prefect

Today, Mr Corcoran spoke with the Yr 12 2021 cohort at our Year Assembly to outline the parameters and responsibilities for attaining School Prefect. Students appreciated the opportunity to ask questions in real time in relation to the new School Leadership structure. Pleasingly, I was able to launch the Yr 12 Legacy Gift fundraising initiative which will carry on the wonderful initiative of the Dr Peter Lennox Scholarship Fund. Having been recipients of a Redlands education, it is hoped that Yr 12 2021 will get behind this wonderful cause and generate enthusiasm in the Redlands community to raise funds for the Scholarship Fund.

School Wide Leaders Meeting

I was lucky to attend the School Wide Leaders Meeting which was held yesterday at lunchtime. It was exciting to hear proposals for future initiatives in the areas of Sport, Service, Environment and the Arts. I was impressed by the students’ collaborative approach and the innovative ideas expressed by these students. Every well considered suggestion was founded on a positive and inclusive premise. I look forward to seeing these ideas develop and come to fruition in the weeks and months ahead.

Congratulations

Theo Mirrlees-Black will be attending the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention on 2 November. Examination Block

Yr 9 will be undertaking their Yearly Examinations during Week 4 next week. The timetable can be found on Redlands Pulse. Aside from revision and examination preparation during our Pastoral Program this week, students have been given the following messages:

  • Yr 9 will be present for all morning examinations and will need to arrive at school by 8.15am for roll marking.
  • All examinations will occur on Level 2 of the H block. (COVID ‘best practice’ will be in place ie. spacing between desks, hand sanitiser etc)
  • If students do not have an exam during Periods 3 and 4, or 5 and 6 they may leave to go home.
  • If students have morning exams, afternoon exams but not exams during Periods 3 and 4 they must stay at school.
  • There will be no Tutor periods except for Thursday where students will attend school for the entire day due to afternoon Sport.
  • Students are to bring into their exam room a clear pencil case or clear plastic sleeve with all materials required for completing an examination (pens, pencils, eraser, highlighter, maths equipment etc) and revision materials along with laptops fully charged (if their laptop contains study material. Laptops are not to be used during the exam.)
  • No headphones are to be bought to the exam rooms or used during study sessions.

Sport During Examinations

All Yr 9 students are expected to attend their sports training throughout the examination week. Managing their personal wellbeing is important during this period, which includes making time for physical exercise and other activities that allow time away from exams and study.

Exam Preparation: Writing Skills

Next week, writing skills will play an important role for our students as they undertake their Yearly Examinations. Here are some writing strategies from the Study Skills Handbooks which will assist with exam writing and essay writing.

Best of luck to all of Year 9 in their Yearly Exams next week!

Congratulations to all students who performed in the Yr 8 Musical Soiree on Monday night. This was their first practical performance and it was an absolute treat to be able to watch these students perform and share their talents, including singing, piano, percussion and various musical instruments. Their talents went beyond the stage as students were responsible for the lighting, stage production and commentating throughout the evening. Well done to all students involved in this production.

Sexism Presentation and Discussion

In recent months, students have become more interested in learning about sexism and how we can work to identify sexist communication, behaviours and comments while learning how to manage it with peers and teachers, in and out of the classroom and as a member of the Redlands community. This interest began with two students presenting their thoughts and concerns as representatives of the cohort. Over the last several weeks, there have been several students sharing their opinions and contributing to the conversation. An anonymous survey was sent around to all Yr 8 students to help gauge student understanding of sexism and their experience with it.

Today, Ahnu Guan, Sholto-Mirrlees-Black, Charli Waterland and Annie Zhang presented an informational and inspirational presentation to all Yr 8 students to help define sexism, share results of the survey and to teach and empower students to speak up and when they do, what can be said. This presentation is the start to many discussions this cohort will have over the years, beginning with a circle discussion on various scenarios tomorrow in Tutor.

Thank you to all students who have participated in this effort. The buzz and conversations following the presentation have already been invaluable and we look forward to continuing this topic so we can ensure to include all viewpoints and support all students within this large global issue.

Redlands Spirit of Christmas Cards

Thank all our creative artists who participated in the Redlands Spirit of Christmas Card competition. With over 60 entries from the Junior Campus, the judging panel enjoyed the beautiful range of diversity reflecting the multi-cultural backgrounds we enjoy here at Redlands.

With so many wonderful submissions, the final judging was very difficult! The judging panel comprised of Mrs Ainslie Breckenridge, Head of Preparatory School; Ms Fiona McKenzie, Junior Campus Chaplain; Ms Paula Reinhold, Junior School Visual Arts Teacher; and Mrs Caroline Jane, Alumni and Community Relations Manager.

Ten artworks were selected to feature in this year’s Redlands Spirit of Christmas card set of 10 images. Congratulations to all the winners who will be acknowledged with a gift of appreciation during assembly next week with the Junior School winners and their entries listed below.

Yasmin Allan and Bianca Neill 6W

“We were inspired by an Australian Christmas. Just because we don’t have snow doesn’t mean we can’t have a fabulous celebration. We chose a koala who are in danger and are worth protecting, we want to protect the Australian Christmas too.”

Samantha Beck, 5Y

“An Australian Christmas, perfectly captures the unique 2020 Australian Christmas to me as it highlights our endangered koalas from the recent summer bushfires where many of their lives were lost. koalas were hurt and their habitats destroyed. My card design is also particularly special as the koala wears a facemask, which represents the COVID-19 global pandemic. Although I highlight two sad events – I hope my artwork brings laughter, joy and Christmas spirit.”

Elizabeth Grinham, 5R

“I have done this artwork because my family always goes to the beach on Christmas Day. There is always someone dressed up as Santa!”

Anya Price, 5W

“A reindeer symbol of strength, kindness and joyful spirit which we are all in need of in these tough times.”

Aimee Kang, 4B

“Santa gets bored of flying sleighs sometimes. He decorates the Christmas tree then surfs to your house. That’s why your house may be slightly wet in the morning.”

Julia Bush, Milli (Milehna) Meyer and Fiona Russell, 3Y

“We chose to draw a Christmas tree with presents around it because it represents the Christmas spirit and tradition. It is when Jesus was born.”

Viraj Tandon, 3B

“I have made a portrait of Mother Mary and Baby Jesus in the Byzantine style.

Thank You to Our Parent Volunteers

Last Thursday evening I joined a number of our Class Parent Reps at our termly meeting, which was again via Zoom. In recognising that not all Class Parent Reps were able to make this evening meeting, I wanted to acknowledge my gratitude to all of these parents who have served our community in roles this year, as well many other parent volunteers and supports such as members of our School Board of Directors, The Redlands Parents and Friends Association and the Foundation Steering Committee, to name but a few of our community groups.

In this unique year, in particular, they have continued to think creatively for ways in which to build connections and maintain relationships within classes and Year Groups and embody the spirit of school community here at Redlands. On behalf of all of our Junior School families and teachers, I thank our Junior School class parents for 2020:

Year 3

Jen Benfield, Catherine Grinham, Jennie Krallis, Rebecca Marshall, Mimi Robinson and Natalie Scott

Year 4

Christine Ambrose, Karen Fastovsky, Tamara Fournier Le Ray, Becky Gait, Cassandra Gorman, Theodora Plouidas, Jane Sheppard and Lucienne Willis

Year 5

Catherine Brown, Nicole Doukas, Lisa Mennie, Virginia Nicholls, Samantha Roger and Beejal Vyas-Price

Year 6

Sara Cartwright, Annie Flynn, Tamara Fournier Le Ray, Helen Jones, Mark Longhurst, Jeanette McLellan, Kylie Riches, Christy Watson and Tiffany Wong

Leading and supporting these parents and the School, we have been very fortunate to have had Jay Cunningham and Rebecca James in the role of Junior School Parent Group Coordinators for 2020 and I extend my sincere gratitude to them for both their dedicated and people-focused leadership and for being such an important conduit between the School and our parent community in this extraordinary year; it has truly made a difference.

Teacher Appreciation Day

As some of you may be aware, this Friday is World Teachers’ Day in Australia and this year and on behalf of the parent community, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association thoughtfully sourced some homemade biscuits from the Buy from the Bush marketplace for every teaching and support staff to enjoy this week on both campuses. This kind and thoughtful gesture from our parent community has been sincerely appreciated by our staff and on behalf of colleagues, I express our collective gratitude to parents for this lovely gesture.

Return of Sport

It has been wonderful to see the resumption of interschool sport again and in particular, having parents attend these games. For most, it has been the first time on campus for many months and I have enjoyed reconnecting with parents on the sidelines. From last week, I wanted to make mention of a couple of teams for different reasons.

Firstly, the Yrs 3/Y4 Mixed Basketball D team were the first game in Dunnet Hall on Saturday morning and despite a 10-5 loss, I was so impressed with their perseverance after trailing 10-0. Some of the team had not played basketball before this term but they listened to the guidance of their coach and worked hard as a team and scored five unanswered points, the final basket going in on the last siren. To a passing observer, their reaction might have indicated that they had won the game given the joy on their faces. Perseverance is a quality that plays a key role in the success or failure in pursuits on and off the sporting field or court and the team really demonstrated this on Saturday.

The other team I wanted to mention was the Yrs 3/Y4 Girls Basketball A team who had a very convincing 36-2 win and I was most impressed by their team spirit and the sportsmanship shown by the team on the court. The sense of fun they were having was palpable and they clearly played well collectively. However, what I noticed was that when their opposition scored their first and only basket, our girls stopped to applaud them, a gesture mirrored by our parents too, which was wonderful to see.

The nature of sport is that it is competitive and of course, we want our students to compete as best as they can each week but we also know the many values that sport can teach and foster too and these types of moments give me far more joy than any winning scoreline.

Yr 4 Learning

Last week, Yr 4 students donned safety glasses and braced themselves for some wild weather. Michael Kniha, Redlands resident horticulturist, demonstrated some of the ways that erosion can impact a landscape. The students watched as wind (the leaf blower) and water (a watering can) weathered sand dunes and created new formations. Michael even uncovered gold and fossils, all in our playground!

Yr 4 parents – if you or your child notice an example of erosion in your neighbourhood, perhaps take a photograph and share with Yr 4.

The last day of the year for Redlands House students is Tuesday 1 December when Redlands House will close at 12.00pm after the Prep School Concert. Please note there is no Late Room on this day. The last day for Late Room is Monday 30 November.

Book Week

What a wonderful day! Thank you to all of the families for the great effort, the costumes were amazing. It was fantastic to see the children celebrating their favourite story characters. We joined the Prep students on the oval and had the chance to parade our costumes for all to see. Many of the children also shared their favourite book with their class, a wonderful day to celebrate literacy and learning.

Basketball

Round 1 of Redlands Basketball was a great success for both the girls and boys Basketball programs. With many of the boys teams playing at our home court at NBISC, there was a great atmosphere and intensity throughout the day. In our Boys A line, we had three great wins for the 14A, 15A, and 1sts teams, which is a fantastic start as our Boys Basketball program is back into Division 1 this year. Our B Boys line nearly finished with a clean sweep against St Augustine’s with four wins in the 14B, 15B, 17B and 2nds, and a draw for the 13Bs. There were two wins in the C line against Oakhill for the 15C boys and 17C boys. In the D line, the Open Blue boys team had a strong win over Oakhill and in the development division, the 14E boys team finished with a three point win over St Patrick’s.

It was a great Round 1 for the Girls Basketball program with seven wins and two losses. We had a number of teams playing at Barker and almost finished with a clean sweep with wins in the 1sts, Junior As, Junior Cs and two wins for the Division 3 side. With two teams travelling to St Paul’s, we came away with a very convincing win for the Junior Bs. All Round 1 results can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Best of luck to all teams in Round 2 this Saturday. The COVID protocols in place for each venue can be found by following this link. A reminder that students should be arriving 15 minutes prior to the start time for their game, dressed in full Redlands Basketball uniform ready to play. Please bring a full water bottle as bubblers may not be available.

Tennis

Last Saturday was Round 2 of the NSTA Term 4 summer competition. We were extremely lucky to complete our matches before the rain arrived. There were a number of convincing wins with Teams 1, 3, 4, 7, 23 and 24 all winning 3 from 3 sets with a number of other teams having very close matches. Well done to all.

Please aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled start time to ensure there is sufficient time for a warm up and matches can start on time, 8.00am and 10.00am. The most up to date draw can be found on the Redlands Rhino. If students are sick or injured and cannot attend training please email Eliza Peirce. If students are sick and rostered to play on Saturday, please email Eliza Peirce before 12.00pm on the Friday before the match to ensure a replacement can be found and all sets can be completed.

The COVID Safety Protocols for Tennis have not changed for Round 3. The one spectator rule at all NSTA Tennis venues remains in place. The Redlands COVID Sports Protocols can be found on Redlands Pulse. All wet weather updates can be found on Twitter

Touch Football

We had a great day out at Macquarie University on Saturday. We had a number of close games with a number of the Junior teams turning out for what was their first taste of Redlands Touch Football. Despite some of the teams going down in close games, the girls were very impressive and are implementing the training techniques during the games. The Junior A girls had a tight contest against a St Spyridon team going down 4-5, the Junior B team went down 0-2 in what was a very close match against St Andrews, Junior C and Junior D teams both played St Andrews also unfortunately going down 3-5 and 2-9. Our Junior E took on a strong St Spyridon 2 team and, considering many of this team had never played before, showed great spirit managing to cross the line in the second half but unfortunately lost 1-5. The Senior teams had a great first hit out on Saturday against both Barker College and Oakhill College. The 1sts looked really impressive against Oakhill and despite going into the half time break at 2-2, the girls took control winning the match 6-3. Our 2nds are still finding their connections within the team, as they managed to sneak home with a 1-0 defeat over Barker College. The 3rds had a double header taking on Barker College. Although they went down 0-3, the girls built confidence knowing they get to play them again. Their second match was a friendly against Barker College 4 which was a one-sided affair. The girls were able to put a lot more structure in place and ran in 11 tries to 0. The Senior 4th team had smiles on their faces from start to finish. Many of these girls have never played before and, despite learning many of the rules on the run, had a lot of fun in a tough 0-8 loss to Oakhill College 2.

A huge thank you to all those spectators who followed the COVID protocols in place at Macquarie University.

TERM 4 SUMMER SPORTS DRAW

Another week down in what is historically a term that ends as quickly as it started. Unfortunately, there were a number of wash outs on the weekend due to the wild and wet weather but those who did play had some great games. Our touch football team beat Riverview B team 14-1, and our game of the week with multiple examples of sportsmanship and skill was the 59-3 win over Mosman in the Yrs 3&4 A Basketball side coached by Sanford Jenkins. Special mention to Zach Holgate on his 24 points which came about from plenty of passing between his team mates. Tennis was an internal match between the B and C sides and Nicholas and Jesscia standing out for sportsmanship on the morning.

2021 Summer Sport Selections

For those students who are currently in Yrs 2, 3, 4 and 5 as well as those students who are joining Redlands next year, we have received 95% of your 2021 Summer Sport selections. Thank you for completing these as it allows us time to prepare and submit our representative sport team submission to IPSHA (the sporting association that we belong to). To the 5% outstanding returning and incoming families who have not yet completed this registration, a reminder email was sent to you this week. If we do not hear back from you by the closing date COB Friday 30 October then your child will not receive a preference and will be allocated to a sport with places.

Congratulations to 5W (Miss Smith) who wins the prize for the first class to have everyone accounted for. Please note Surfing is full and Stand-up Paddle Boarding is filling up quickly (both Non-Representative sports).

Once registration closes, these draft sport selections will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse so you can view with the option of changing your original choice within a few days. If you happy with your selection there is no need to confirm and no further steps are required from you.

Training Schedule

Wednesday is our primary training day for our Summer Sport. Throughout the term there are also optional morning training sessions on offer for students in Representative Sport to attend. Please note these are now based in stages with only Yrs 3 and 4 on Wednesday morning and only Yrs 5 and 6 on Friday morning for Basketball. These sessions will only continue if they are well attended by students across both days.

Term 4 Summer Sport Training Schedule

Each week, two rounds of fixtures will be released for viewing. This draw is ‘live’ in nature with updates occurring as we receive them from host schools. Please do not print the draw out for this reason. Best practice would be to check the draw on Thursday or Friday evening for the most up to date details. The meeting times for matches remains unchanged with students requiring to meet their coaches 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the match. You can filter this draw by selecting your child’s sport, then their team from the tabs which will show only their fixtures.

Dance on Film 2020

Redlands presents Dance on Film 2020.

Students and staff have been working for months in preparation for our annual, End of Year Ballet and Dance Concert. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we will not be able to perform at The Concourse theatre this year.

However, we are delighted to present this year’s concert as Dance on Film 2020, presenting the 19th century ballet, The Sleeping Beauty, a collection of Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy’s Extra Curriculum together with Secondary Curriculum Dance works from all students.

All work will be produced and filmed in Redlands Hall, on the Senior Campus over several days in late November. In order for this exciting new event to be a success, we ask you all to view the filming dates times and details on Redlands Pulse. Parents and students will also receive notifications in the coming days.

We look forward to working together on this exciting new initiative along with all the opportunities and challenges it presents. This year, it has been particularly important to be able to celebrate and share the efforts and magic of our inspiring students and teachers with family and friends and this film will be a great opportunity to do so. We wish to thank our Ballet and Dance community in advance for their tremendous support.

End of Year Concert Rehearsals

We would like to advise our Secondary School Ballet students of the following rehearsal:

The Sleeping Beauty | Sunday 15 November | 10.00am-2.00pm | Parkes Hall

End of Year Performances

In preparation for End of Year presentations, Music groups and Ensembles will participate in a recording project over the coming weeks. The Music Department has consolidated a range of creative projects to deliver uniquely different performances for 2020 and still provide students with the opportunity to share their musical talents with the School community.
