Issue 32 2023 Term 4 Week 3 - 26 Oct 2023

From the Principal

Our aspiration as part of our Strategic Plan at Redlands is to be a leading contemporary and innovative school, inspiring students to adapt, create and thrive in our complex global community, and I believe this aspiration is becoming increasingly important and relevant for the young people we are educating today. This aspiration is nothing new for Redlands as throughout our 139 year history, we have been a school that has often been at the leading edge of the evolving educational landscape.

One of our five strategic drivers to best achieve our aspiration is to “Nurture and deepen a culture of innovation” at Redlands, and while innovation is certainly already a part of our DNA, one of my highlights so far as Principal this year is witnessing how this culture of innovation has further developed in 2023.

Under the leadership of our Innovation and Entrepreneurial Learning Strategist, Ms Liz Green, there have been many highlights in the innovation space this year. The first was incorporating staff, student and parent input to develop a shared definition of innovation at Redlands (“the ability to look at existing problems in new ways or solve new problems with existing methods”).

Through a focus on active and responsible citizenship, entrepreneurial thinking, developing external partnerships and interdisciplinary teaching and learning, we have found opportunities to more deeply embed innovation into our programs.

Some of this year’s highlights have been:

  • The Year 9 Intrapreneurial Design Thinking Project in Term 3 where students worked with external partners to design solutions to real world challenges
  • Year 6 students partnering with UNICEF for their Unit of Inquiry to develop innovative solutions to a natural disaster scenario, focusing on the rights of a child. View Video HERE.
  • Year 11 students visited ResMed as part of their Industry Day and engaged with various parts of the company from the importance of inclusive design to mechatronics
  • Groups of Year 10 students participating in the Biotech Futures Challenge where they developed scientific inspired solutions to challenges in fields ranging from medicine and health to emerging technologies and ethics.

I would like to congratulate Year 10 students Jesse Forrest, Lachlan Green and Krishna Gupta who were chosen from entries from around the world to present at the Biotech Futures Challenge finals at Sydney University on Monday.

I am confident our continued focus on embedding and nurturing a culture of innovation at Redlands will truly inspire students to achieve life readiness for whatever awaits them after school.

Community Update

Community

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) all come together as passionate and dedicated volunteers to selflessly support our School and the wider Redlands community. All of the important groups of committed and passionate volunteer members highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands.  These community meetings, class and year group parent coffees and events provide a wonderful opportunity for us all to stay connected, included and informed.

A reminder that parents and carers who are interested in shaping the future of the School are invited and encouraged to attend the Redlands Parents and Friends Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held this evening, Thursday 26 October, in Room 1.4 of the Liggins Building (Senior Campus) at 6.30pm. This is a great opportunity for new and current parents to hear how our Association works within, and for, our valued community.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Navigating Media, Emotions and News Events: A Guide for Informed Discussions

In an age of constant connectivity, the way we consume and interpret media, especially concerning distressing news events, is of paramount importance. Teenagers, some of the most media-connected individuals, often encounter a deluge of information about social issues, natural disasters, and conflicts. However, not all this information is reliable; opinions often overshadow facts.

On Tuesday, Ms Jansons (Dean of Students), spoke to Year 7-9 about students possessing the potential to be discerning media consumers. She outlined that when distressing events occur, deciphering the flood of messages can be challenging. It’s vital for our young people to approach media and disaster news critically, fostering diverse perspectives while managing their emotions and looking after themselves.

Students were encouraged to consider the complexities of big news events, to take a moment to reflect on their thoughts, emotions, information sources and questions about big issues.

The proliferation of information on social media has made understanding big news issues daunting. Social media plays a significant role in disseminating news and opinions. It’s important that we as adults and our young people pose crucial questions about media consumption and the influence of social media algorithms on our perspectives.

Choosing understanding over assumption when responding to complex issues is vital. Students were encouraged to engage with credible resources, seek diverse perspectives, ask critical questions, and engage in respectful discussion to build a comprehensive understanding of global issues.

Together, we can navigate the sea of information in our modern world, looking after ourselves and others in the process. If you’re looking for more information on supporting your child at home, Raising Children Network’s article ‘Disaster News and Distressing News Events: Supporting Teenagers provides some great tips and hints for parents.

We Are All in Exam Mode

HSC exams continued this week, with students sitting a range of Extension subjects, Biology, Drama, and Chemistry. The IB exams began on Monday with students sitting a variety of Language papers, Business Management, Physics, Sports, Exercise and Health Science, Computer Science and Environmental Systems and Societies. Our Year 12 students have managed the lead up to exams exceptionally and have continued this positivity as the exams have begun. They have been in the right place, at the right time, ready to write their exams and be the best that they can be. The Deans of HSC and IB, Mrs Benjamin and Mr Taylor, as well as Year Advisors Mr Walker and Ms Martin, are very proud of how the students have conducted themselves throughout this examination period; they are excellent role models for their younger peers also sitting exams at this time. We wish them well for the remainder of their exams.

Our Year 7 and Year 10 students are congratulated for their exemplary conduct during the Yearly Exams this week. Their dedication to the values of integrity, resilience and hard work has been a shining example for their peers in Years 8 and 9 who will commence their exams next week. Our students consistently demonstrated the message that was given at the start of Term 4, that ‘other people matter,’ and they can be proud that they exhibited respect and consideration for their fellow peers during the exams, creating an atmosphere of unity and support. Their strength of character and positive attitude throughout the examination week showed that our Years 7 and 10 students are well on their way to achieving even greater accomplishments and building stronger study skills in the years ahead.

We wish Years 8 and 9 well for their examinations commencing in Week 4. In these final few days leading up to the exams, we cannot underestimate the significance of practising past papers and revising diligently. It is during this time that students’ efforts are often consolidated and translated into success. Staying focused and steadfast in their study endeavours is key to making the most of this preparation period. To stay on track, it’s essential that students stick to a study schedule that accommodates breaks for rest and relaxation. Adhering to a schedule will provide structure and ensure that all subjects receive due attention. As we wish our Year 8 and 9 students well for their exams, we also encourage them to remember that a well-balanced combination of focused study, exercise, sleep and a good diet (especially a substantial breakfast) will contribute to a composed mindset which will go a long way in achieving academic excellence during this important time.

Late Arrivals and Study Period Attendance

The cohort was reminded in their Year Meeting last week that all late arrivals need to be accompanied by a parent note to SSAbsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au to be excused. If students are running late, they are expected to own this reason as unexcused and there may be a consequence to make up for this missed class time, depending on the regularity and severity of the late arrival.

HSC students were also reminded of the attendance expectation for Study Periods. Attendance is taken and recorded and all students are expected to be on campus in their assigned Study Period classroom for their attendance to be marked. Students use this time as they need to catch up on their workload and the accountability of being on campus for study supports students in remaining focused and using the time wisely.

Thank you for reiterating these expectations with students at home. We appreciate your support in keeping students focused.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

We wish the best of luck to our group of rising Yr 12 students who are performing or supporting with the play next week. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be running 1-3 November in Week 4. The International Chemistry Quiz

The International Chemistry Quiz is completed by over 100,000 students across 21 countries. The quiz endeavours to promote chemistry and chemical thinking. The questions go beyond what is covered in syllabus documents requiring the students to be applying their knowledge and understanding to stimulus material.

Congratulations to Jocelyn Wang who achieved a High Distinction which means she was in the top 10% of students in Australia.

Reminders

Late Arrival to School

As we head towards the end of the year, could I please ask parents to support their young person in getting to school on time and ready to learn by 8.15am. As the term has progressed, many students have been consistently arriving 10 minutes or more late to school. It is important to arrive promptly to school and classes as it directly affects a student’s learning and academic progress, becoming an ingrained bad habit. Students are being supported at school via conversations and reflection activities to consider the strategies they can develop to self-manage and arrive at school on time.

All late arrivals need to be accompanied by a parent note to ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au to be excused. If students are running late, they are expected to own this reason as ‘unexcused’ and there may be a consequence to make up for this missed class time, depending on the regularity and severity of the late arrival.

Thank you for reiterating these expectations with students at home. We appreciate your support in keeping students focused and ready to learn.

Uniform

As we continue on in the term, it is crucial to emphasise the significance of personal appearance and strict adherence to the Redlands Uniform Policy. Maintaining a well-kept school uniform, including a neatly tucked-in shirt, belt, appropriate dress length and no makeup, holds great importance. It conveys dedication and respect for both the school’s uniform policy and the situation at hand. This attention to detail boosts confidence, sending a clear message of adherence to established norms. Creating positive first impressions through proper attire can communicate responsibility and reliability to others. Embracing the habit of wearing the correct uniform instils discipline and underscores the broader life lesson that our presentation matters, impacting our interactions, opportunities, and relationships, both within and beyond the Redlands community. It underscores our ability to adapt, show respect, and cultivate a level of care that contributes to personal and future success. Parents, please support your young person to uphold the Redlands uniform.

Exam Week

Over the course of the last three weeks we have endeavoured to provide our Year 9 students with a variety of examples of what it means to display good study habits. These have included weekly planning, study techniques and effective study with peers.

In our assembly on Tuesday, Ms Van de Peer added three more pieces of insight from our current Year 12s who have been diligently preparing for their final HSC and IB examinations. The first tip was to look to reduce the size of your notes over time, a process she referred to as ‘reduction’, where over the course of revision periods students reduced the size of their notes from a number of pages, to a single page and then right down to a few (two – three) palm cards just before an exam. The second was ‘practice’, which many students are currently doing with additional questions in their texts or provided past examinations. The third was ‘articulate’; explaining your notes out loud and verbalising your content knowledge either to yourself or others. These are all useful tips and something that I encourage students to consider over the weekend in the lead up to next week.

We have also asked students to engage in thought about what their expectations are and the nature of personal achievement beyond a marks/results focus. For many this requires a redefinition of the notion of success and achievement linked to their own personal learning and individual goals.

From an administrative perspective, please ensure that your student goes through the exam schedule and letter so that all expectations are clear once more before Year 9 embark on their exams next week.

Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 21-27 April 2024

Redlands will be offering a Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 21-27 April 2024. This Tour will be open to current Year 9 and 10 students.

In this cultural immersion, students will revisit and build on the ideas they were introduced to in last year’s Culture College Camp, consolidating knowledge and understanding. After a brief stay at the Gulkula site students will travel to one of the remote Yolngu Homeland areas, usually Nyinyikay. This offers the opportunity for a much more personal, extensive, and detailed exploration of Yolngu culture than was possible on the year group Camp.

Visiting and spending time in a Yolngu Homeland is something few people ever get to experience. Students will be immersed in the living culture of Aboriginal clans of East Arnhem Land, one of the most culturally intact and pristine regions left on Earth. This unique program provides privileged access and interaction with the Yolngu people and their lands of which they have been the traditional owners for over 50,000 years.

This Tour is an opportunity for students who are ready and willing to consider more deeply the knowledge they gained previously and how to effect change for the future. We are proud to be working with Culture College to provide opportunities for connection between cultures.

The cost of the tour is $5,395. A proposed itinerary and booking form can be found on Pulse.

Bookings and payments are made directly to Culture College, so please check their Terms and Conditions on the Booking Form.

Winter School 2024 – Expressions of Interest

Mr Atkins has briefed Yr 9 on the application process for Winter School 2024. Students have been asked to communicate with Mr Atkins directly via email to express their interest in being considered for Winter School 2024. This will need to be completed by Friday 27 October. The Winter School application process involves a few steps for our Yr 9 students over the next 2-3 terms and more information will be provided to those students who put forward their EOI.

Exam Week

Over the course of the last three weeks we have tried to provide our Year 8 students with a variety of examples of what it means to display good study habits. These have included weekly planning, study techniques and effective study with peers through the use of ‘study bubbles’.

In our assembly on Tuesday, Ms Van de Peer added three more pieces of insight from our current Year 12s as they have prepared for their finals. The first tip was to look to reduce the size of your notes over time, a process she referred to as ‘reduction’, where over the course of revision periods students reduced the size of their notes from a number of pages, to a single page and then right down to a few (two – three) palm cards just before an exam. Year 7

Year 7 Examinations

What a busy week it has been for Year 7, facing their first ever examination week in the Secondary School! To their credit, students have approached their examinations with cool heads, strong focus and a commitment to making the most of their experience.

Thomas Edison once said, ‘genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration’ and Yr 7 appear to be living out this creed, working hard across the week and in the weeks leading up to it, to refine their skills and consolidate their knowledge. Mrs Adams and I have been so impressed with how the cohort has navigated the examination week.

I am sure there have been some valuable lessons learned about how to approach examinations and how to stay mentally ‘switched on’ for the week, and we will reflect on these learning points in Tutor time next week.

For now, there is one day of examinations left, and so we continue to wish Yr 7 well!

ICAS Achievements

On Monday, during our Year Assembly, we recognised students for their achievements in the ICAS Mathematics and Science competitions. It is wonderful to see students engaging in these pursuits in order to challenge themselves and extend their academic potential. Well done to them all!

Breaking Records

During our Year Assembly, we also congratulated Liv Law on being awarded an ISA Record Certificate, for her fantastic record breaking 800m run of 2.21.14 in September. Congratulations!

New Zealand Exchange Opportunity for T1 2024

Next year, the school will be offering an opportunity for a student exchange to NZ in February and March. Four Yr 7 students will have the opportunity to travel to Kristin School near Auckland for three weeks in February, and the school, will in turn, host four Kristin students in March. Kristin is an independent co-educational school and has an extensive exchange program, in which we have participated for several years: https://www.kristin.school.nz/

Redlands students will travel to Auckland for three weeks from Saturday 3 February to Saturday 24 February 2024. Students will stay with a Kristin host family. They will attend the Kristin Year Group Camp for one of the three weeks and go to classes with their host partner for the remaining two. Kristin students will travel to stay with their exchange partner and family in Sydney from Saturday 2 March to Saturday 23 March. Kristin students will attend Year 8 camp with their partner in the first week, joining normal classes and activities after that.

This program would suit students who are fully involved in the life of the School, are prepared to be involved in the life of Kristin and will be excellent ambassadors for Redlands when overseas. For further information and to provide an EOI, please visit Pulse.

Parent Seminar – Strength in Connections: Fostering Resilience, Self-confidence, and Healthy Relationships in Adolescents

In Week 4, our school counselling team will be holding another valuable session designed to support parents and caregivers of young people who might display heightened emotional reactions to stressful situations and peer conflicts. The workshop will provide information and practical strategies to assist parents and carers in nurturing resilience and a robust sense of self in our young students. The seminar is designed to offer ways to help your young person develop the skills needed to tackle challenges, boost their self-confidence, and navigate social relationships in a manner that fosters healthy connections with their peers.

The seminar will be in the Redlands Learning Hub (LH2.7 & LH2.8) on Tuesday 31 October from 5.30pm – 7.00pm, with nibbles and drinks available between 5.30pm – 6.00pm. For further information and to register your attendance, please visit Pulse.

Inquisitive Minds Mathematics Incursion

Last Thursday and Friday saw us welcome back Inquisitive Minds to run mathematical workshops across the two days for all of Yrs 3-6 to both enjoy and be challenged by.

From the outset, the high levels of engagement, collaboration and risk taking in learning were plain to see, with students participating in problem-solving relays to tackle mathematical challenges, demonstrating grit and perseverance as well as shared thinking strategies.

Yrs 3 and 4 also enjoyed an afternoon session making towers, characters and cities with wooden planks. Leaning on both mathematical and engineering principles, there were a range of challenges that inspired and stretched the students in equal measure which was wonderful to see.

My thanks to our Maths specialist, Mrs Harding, for her coordination of this rich, hands-on learning experience for every student to employ mathematical thinking in different contexts. The days were a big hit and again seemed to ignite a passion for so many students.

Year 7, 2024 Advisors

I am delighted to share that Ms Abby Walker and Mr Nick Walker (no relation) have been appointed as Year 7 Advisor and Year 7 Assistant Advisor for 2024 to take care and guide our current Yr 6 cohort as they embark on and travel through their Secondary School journey. Both are experienced and respected pastoral leaders at Redlands, having held similar roles previously and knowing them both personally, Yr 6 will be blessed to have them as they start Yr 7. In the coming weeks, they will be an increasing presence in the transition for Yr 6 students moving across and of course will be instrumental in the students’ Orientation Day on Friday 10 November.

Ahead of this date, students will see them for our ‘Yr 6 Chat and Connect’ session on Tuesday 7 November which is a time designed to help alleviate any anxiety that students may be feeling about the move. Led by current Secondary School students, the time has always provided Yr 6 with both the opportunity to connect with older students and to ask specific questions. There will also be the chance to meet some of the key staff members from the Secondary School.

World Teacher’s Day – Friday 27 October

The very best teachers I have worked alongside never shine a light on their own achievements. It is never about them; it is always about enabling and supporting the students they teach and guide.

As teachers, we don’t seek the limelight for what we do; it is simply part of the profession we chose. However, I will take this opportunity to acknowledge the incredible Redlands staff team who continue to demonstrate great care, expertise, collegiality and passion for the work that they do. It remains humbling and inspiring to work alongside them each day in a profession that we know has such a profound impact on so many people for years to come and sometimes for a lifetime. Everyone remembers their favourite teachers from school and why.

Tomorrow is World Teachers’ Day and on behalf of the staff, I extend sincere appreciation to the Redlands Parents and Friends Association who provided a delicious range of pastries for morning tea for the Junior Campus staff to acknowledge this global date of recognition. The thoughtful gesture from our community means a lot to us so thank you.

Parent Appreciation – Thank you

Tonight, I am looking forward to joining staff and Board Directors at our annual School ‘thank you’ to our many parent volunteers, whose dedication and service to our community makes such a significant difference to Redlands.

The voluntary roles that so many of our parents play have a significant role in fostering and strengthening the palpable sense of school community that embodies Redlands and as I mentioned last week, volunteering also serves as a great example of an altruistic mentality to our children as well as others.

Term 4 Parent Topic Talk

Recharging in the School Holidays: Powering Up for the Year Ahead

Join our Junior Campus counsellor-led workshop, Recharging in the school holidays: Powering up for the year ahead, where we’ll discuss making the most of the holidays to prepare your child for the upcoming school year. We’ll explore a range of strategies you can put in place to support your child’s mental wellness during the holidays, such as keeping them engaged, setting realistic goals for sleep and physical activity, and managing technology use. We will also focus on the importance of fostering healthy relationships within your family as well as with your child’s peers throughout the holiday period. All the practical tools provided in this presentation can help your child feel more prepared and confident for the new school year.

Surf Education

This week, Junior School students enjoyed the opportunity to start their Surf Education sessions at Freshwater Beach. In the glorious sunshine, and as part of this annual program, the students are developing increased beach awareness and safety skills which we know will be invaluable ahead of the summer holiday period.

Thank you to Ms Robinson from the PDHPE team for coordinating the program again in tandem with Surf Life Saving School Australia and their qualified team of SLSSA instructors.

Message for OOSH Families

We are thrilled to announce some further exciting events and opportunities for students who attend OOSH.

We have just opened a survey where you can indicate which activities you would like to book for your children. Your feedback will help us plan activities that your children will enjoy. Please take a moment to click on the link here and choose as many activities as you’d like to see in our program.

OOSH Football Match and BBQ

Get ready for a fun-filled evening of sports and delicious food! Our OOSH Football Match is scheduled for 4.30pm on Friday 17 November. Join us for an exciting game where parents, grandparents and friends will be able to play against our OOSH educators, including former Socceroo, Gerry Gomez! After the match, we’ll be hosting a BBQ, to finish the day in great style. This promises to be a fantastic opportunity for the children to see their families in action!

MIP Parent Information Session: Year 4 2024

Yr 4 2024 (current Yr 3) parents and carers are warmly invited to an information session about the Music Instrumental Program (MIP). The MIP program is a curriculum instrumental learning experience for all Yrs 4 and 5 students, during which students learn an orchestral instrument with our team of specialist music tutors.

Parents and carers should have now received a letter outlining the specifics of the program, and we encourage you to attend this information session where there will opportunities to ask any questions you may have. The session will be held at 2.30pm next Wednesday 1 November in the Arnold Library and led by Ms Katherine Moses (Subject Coordinator of Junior Campus Music).

Parking Around the Campus

Please can I remind all parents to continue to be mindful of the rules of the road around our campus to ensure that every child’s safety is paramount, which I know you would want too. In particular, I ask families not to illegally double park near the pedestrian crossing, not to leave cars unattended in the moving car line and to respect our neighbours’ driveways when dropping off and picking up. Just yesterday, one parent car was parked sufficiently across a local resident’s driveway for them not to be able to leave their home, which is unacceptable. Thanks as always to the majority of our families who continue to do the right thing.

A big thank you to the RPFA for providing our wonderful teachers with delicious treats today to mark Teacher Appreciation Day. Every day I am in awe of what our teachers do for our students and our wider community. They are the glue the binds us altogether and today we say a big thank you to all of them.

Big Hearts Program

Big Hearts Project: Empowering Our Children’s Emotional Understanding

A message from our Counsellors

We are thrilled to share that we’ve successfully concluded the first session of the Big Hearts Project, a program designed to empower children with the knowledge and skills to understand and manage their emotions effectively. We’re excited to provide you with a quick recap of the activities.

Psychoeducation on Emotions

We introduced the students to the fundamental concept of emotions and how they can significantly impact their behaviour. To reinforce this learning, we showcased a valuable video that you can watch together with your children. This video serves as an excellent tool for deepening their comprehension of emotions.

Balloon Breathing Exercise

We also engaged the students in a soothing visualisation breathing exercise known as “Balloon Breathing.” They discovered a creative way to visualise their breath inflating and deflating, just like a balloon. This technique equips them with the skills to relax and effectively respond to their emotions.

Zones of Regulation

We also explored the “Zones of Regulation.” They learned how various emotions can place them in different “Zones” and how they might behave in the different “Zones”. This knowledge is designed to enhance their self-awareness and emotional literacy.

We encourage you to play an active role in reinforcing these activities and strategies with your children at home. By doing so, you can help them to develop their emotional literacy, and strengthen their ability to regulate their emotions.

Principal for a Day

Last week I had the privilege of welcoming Olivia Hepple (1 Yellow) and Jonathan Burton (1 Yellow) to my office as Principals for the Day! Both students were the lucky recipients of the 2024 Gala Ball prize to spend a day in my shoes and my goodness did we have fun together. The days began with a hot chocolate for Olivia and a Chai tea for Jonathan followed by a walk-through Redlands House to check on staff and students and to re-engage with their old teachers. The rest of the time was spent attending meetings, conducting zoom interviews, endless walking around the Prep School and most importantly, ringing the bell.

Both students gave writing new school rules a red-hot go, but this did come to an end when they both realised that by letting lunchtime extend all day would mean no learning would take place.

I believe that the highlight for Jonathan was using Jacqui’s water gun to spray students at lunchtime while Olivia’s highlight was being so busy at lunchtime that she had no time to eat as there was so many ‘Principal things to do’.

I thoroughly enjoyed both these experiences with Olivia and Jonathan, we had fun and being able to spend quality time with such amazing students is an experience I certainly will treasure. Thank you, Olivia, and Jonathan, for being fabulous Principals for the Day.

Swimming Program

Year 2 concluded their intensive swimming school last week at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre. Excited and brave swimmers boarded the bus with a few nerves to begin with but by the second session they were full of confidence.

In Australia and especially in our location here is Sydney, we tend to take knowing how to swim for granted and our intensive swim program is, for some, the first time they may have experienced formal swimming lessons. With summer just around the corner, learning to swim and to be safe in the waves is very important for young children. Please reach out to the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre for details about their learn to swim program if you would like more information.

Welcome Kindergarten Class of 2024

It was lovely to have not only our 2024 Kindergarten cohort on campus on Wednesday for orientation but also their parents for a meet and greet session in the Arnold Library. Key staff members were able to share information and stories to help inform families. Mr Corcoran was able to empathise with new Kindy parents’ nerves by sharing stories of his children starting school. After the session, parents and staff shared a cup of coffee, formed connections, and even organised some Christmas holiday playdates.

We are very excited to welcome the class of 2036 into our Redlands family next year.

Secondary Sport

Leadership in teenagers is a vital aspect of their personal development. It’s during adolescence that individuals begin to shape their values, character and the ability to influence those around them. Setting a good example, especially during training or in any group setting, is a powerful way for teenagers to exercise positive leadership.

First and foremost, teenagers are highly impressionable, and they often look up to their peers and mentors. When a teenager consistently demonstrates commitment, discipline and a positive attitude in a training environment, it naturally inspires those around them. This not only fosters a culture of excellence but also encourages their peers to strive for similar qualities.

Leading by example teaches teenagers the importance of accountability and responsibility. It reinforces the idea that leadership is not about merely giving orders but about being a role model who embodies the values and behaviours they wish to see in others. it instills a sense of integrity and ethical conduct, which are crucial components of effective leadership.

Ultimately, the influence of setting a good example during training and games extends far beyond the realms of just training and games. It equips teenagers with essential life skills and values that will serve them well in various aspects of their future, helping them become responsible, principled and effective leaders in their communities and beyond.

‘If you feel like you’re losing everything, remember, trees lose their leaves every year, yet they still stand tall and wait for better days to come’

– Unknown Japanese Legend

Wet Weather

We have been lucky enough to have a relatively dry winter and to start the summer season, we use a number of fields that are multi-purpose and all weather. Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’. Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Rowing

Over the weekend the Rowing program attended the Newcastle Grammar School Regatta held in Berry Park, our first regatta for the season. Year 7 students kicked off the day racing in mixed gender crews with an older student in the boat with them as guidance for how to complete their first race.

All students had multiple racing opportunities across a range of events throughout the day against other coed schools such as Newcastle Grammar School, Hunter Valley Grammar School, Scone and Barker College along with a number of local rowing clubs.

We had some fantastic results from all Year Groups with 91 different crews racing in 21 events and 16 wins. The coaches and I are excited to see how students apply these lessons from their first regatta to training over the next few weeks leading into their next regatta on Sat 18 November.

Sailing

Week 2 of the Redlands Sailing program provided the sailors with further opportunity to build fundamental racing and boat handling skills. Saturday in particular was a spectacular day out on Sydney Harbour and gave both squads a perfect chance to develop their roll tacking skills with the light wind. Towards the end of the session, they had to also manage “shifting gears” as they saw the start of the afternoon sea breeze. Progression continued towards our first regatta with drills catered towards high performance racing, with the Pacer squad learning about time on distance and how to position their boat to have advantageous race starts.

REMINDER: NO HAT, NO PLAY

Required Uniform:

  • To and from RSYS: Redland’s sports uniform.
  • On-water: Redlands blue sports hat, Redlands white long sleeve sun shirt, board shorts/Redlands sports shorts, enclosed shoes (old runners,) spray jacket, sunscreen, towel and a jumper for after.

Summer Sport Photos

The family information package and link for our sport photos on Wednesday 1 November was shared with you earlier in the week.

Students should arrive at school at normal time for regular classes as well as sport that afternoon.

Please be aware that if your child’s name or team is listed in the run sheet then they will be required to attend the photos in their respective teams with the correct uniform and only those students listed are required to come down to the oval at the listed times.

Those students who are not needed in a representative sport photo are still required at school for normal classes and supervision before also going to Wednesday Sport.

Sport Extension Training

Now in our 4th week of extension training for our Summer Representative Teams, it has been very well attended from students across the 3 grades. As we now pivot to include conditioning for the first half of the session before matches in the second half, a reminder for students to bring a water bottle to that session. Can we also ask parents and guardians to collect their child at 4:30pm. Any student not collected at this time will be sent to after school care.

Sport Calendar

The sport calendar for Term 4 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here.

Redlands App – Communication

In Term 4, all Redlands Sport Activities will continue to be through Pulse and the Redlands App.  Here you will be able to see all activities, teams and groups your child is part of, all scheduled lessons and locations and receive instant push notifications for any changes or cancellations.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sports – Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Representative Sport Team Movement

In regard to representative sport and the movement of players across ability based teams, it is transparent for all parties as unexplained team movements sometimes cause unnecessary stress. At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY – in direct comparison to other students across the sport
ATTENDANCE – any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved
ATTITUDE – this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Our Years 10-11 Cocurricular Drama Production presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Term 4 at the Zenith Theatre at Chatswood, 1920s style! A Midsummer Night’s Dream: the tale of Hermia, Demetrius, Lysander, and Helena; four misguided lovers who’s journey into the woods lands them in even more trouble, as members of the fairy kingdom decide to use them as veritable pawns in their own love games. Against the backdrop of the wedding of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta, and the fiery battle of wills between the Fairy King and Queen, Oberon and Titania, the four lovers are challenged by magic and trickery to finally work out what love is all about. We have been busily rehearsing preparing the performance for our audience, we would love to see you there!

Drama and Theatre – Student of the Week: Clem Leroux

Clem Leroux is this week’s Drama and Theatre student of the week. Her commitment and attitude towards both Senior Acting and Senior Theatresports is outstanding. Clem always brings with her a willingness to try anything, work with anyone and most importantly, she always has fun. Her behavior and attendance are perfect. Whether it be improvisation or scene work, Clem is always prepared. Her creative work, comic timing and the energy she brings to the stage are impressive. The MIP program is a curriculum instrumental learning experience for all Yr 4 and 5 students, during which students learn an orchestral instrument with our team of dedicated Music Tutor specialists. All String Ensembles on the Junior Campus are busily preparing for our annual Strings showcase in Week 5. We invite parents and guests to come along and witness the wonderful growth of our MIP musicians on Thursday 9 November at 2pm in Dunnet Hall.
