Issue 31 2023 Term 4 Week 2 - 19 Oct 2023

From The Principal

Last Friday evening we held our 2nd Annual Redlander Alumni Awards where we recognised the achievements of ten Redlanders for their outstanding contributions in their various fields of endeavour since leaving school. It was also a special opportunity to bring our community together in celebration: Board and Executive; current staff and former staff; current parents and former parents; and most of all, graduates from across the years (1959 through to 2019).

Over the past few years it has been wonderful to see our alumni connections strengthening, with an increasing number of Redlanders returning to the School to lend their support in many different ways, whether it is coaching, tutoring, mentoring, speaking at assemblies or hosting students at their workplaces.

Like previous alumni events I have attended in recent years, what struck me most about the evening was how when asked what they valued most about their Redlands education, our alumni reflected on many of the same principles and themes that our students share today. This was best summed up in the speech from Redlander Max Glanville (Class of 2009 who excelled in sport, music and innovation both at school and in life after school), who reflected that what he valued most about his Redlands education was community, service and opportunity – three hallmarks we are still proud of today.

On Tuesday we held our Year 12 2024 Leadership Induction Assembly where we formally recognised the Class of 2024 as the new student leaders in the Secondary School. I always love our leadership assembly, as, after feeling a tinge of sadness at the end of Term 3 each year when we farewell a departing Year 12 class, I get excited seeing our new student leaders step into this space.

In the assembly I specifically spoke to all Year 12 students, not just those who hold formal leadership positions, as by the nature of moving into Year 12, they will all be seen as leaders in our school community, and the legacy the Class of 2024 leaves behind this year will not be determined by the impact of a few, but rather, by the collective influence of many.

Our two new School Captains, Jasmine and Isaac, Ms Van de Peer and I all focused on two aspects of leadership we feel are so important, not just here at Redlands but outside of school, as well: servant leadership and authentic leadership.

As I shared in the assembly, true leadership is a selfless act. It is about serving others; serving the wider community; making sacrifices for the greater good; and letting their light shine for the betterment of others. I also told all Year 12 students that they are respected and valued as a leader because of who they are, not what others think they are or should be, and this is something that makes Redlands special.

As I have popped into the leadership training sessions being run for our Year 12 students over the past two days, it has been wonderful to see this focus on service and authenticity shining through from our new student leaders already.

Community Update

Community

It was a genuine pleasure to host the Redlander Alumni Awards last Friday evening where our alumni were honoured, recognised and celebrated for the extraordinary achievements locally and globally during an evening of celebration, connection and collaboration. We are proud to nurture and develop these important connections with our community through our dedicated alumni engagement program. Congratulations to all of our award winners and my thanks to the organising committee and judging panel for bringing this wonderful event to life in its second year. A detailed list of our award winners, along with an update on our Springtime Auction and Melbourne Cup event events, can be found in the Foundation section of Note Day.

It was a pleasure to attend the Junior and Secondary School Parent Contact Group (PCG) Meetings this week. Our PCGs continue to explore ways to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life. A reminder that parents and carers who are interested in shaping the future of the School are invited and encouraged to attend the Redlands Parents and Friends Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held in Room 1.4 on Level 1 of the Liggins Building (Senior Campus) at 6.30pm on Thursday October 26. This is a great opportunity for new parents to hear how our Association works within, and for, our valued community.  If you are interested in a position within the RPFA then please have a look at this document that details the various roles and responsibilities.

A reminder that bookings are now open for the Redlands Parent and Carer Midawarr Arnhem Land Trip scheduled from Sunday 26 to Thursday 30 May 2024. To whet your appetite on what you might experience on this once in a lifetime trip, click here to watch a video of our 2023 Year 9 cohort and their teachers immerse themselves in this ancient culture. Leadership and Learning

The second week of Term 4 is hurtling along at great speed. Students are engaged with preparing for their examination blocks, and our outgoing and incoming Year 12 students continue to model exceptional approaches to learning.

On Tuesday we held the Year 12 Induction Assembly which marked the official transition of Year 11 into Year 12. Each student passed across the stage to be warmly greeted into Year 12 by Mr Corcoran. Each student received a senior badge, tie and ribbon as a visual symbol of their Year 12 leadership to self, the School community and the external community. We know that each Year 12 student will cherish and respect these new parts of their uniform and wear them with pride.

The Captains of Activities, House Captains and Portfolio Captains pledged to serve as student leaders in front of the School community.

The school community was reminded and encouraged to embrace leadership via supportive speeches offered by me, Mr Corcoran and the newly inducted School Captains.

After these speeches, Year 8 student Zoe Potter, Year 9 student Lachlan Price-Pontifex and Year 10 student Lucile Thompson offered prayers for the Year 12 cohort.

Empowering Our Student Leaders

On Tuesday, the Secondary School was thrilled to induct our new student leaders and Year 12 2024 cohort. On Wednesday and Thursday, student leaders worked with yLead who empowered them on their journey towards mastering the essence of servant leadership. It was truly inspiring to witness these young leaders exploring ways to maximise their impact!

Workshops were dynamic leadership experiences, seamlessly blending team building with essential skill development. Through hands-on challenges, our students not only refined their leadership skills but also deepened their bonds, crafting a shared vision for the year ahead.

Leadership team values:

  • Authenticity & Vulnerability: Being genuine, for ourselves and others
  • Bravery & Courage: Expanding horizons through calculated risks
  • Inclusivity & Community: Celebrating our unique tapestry

Leadership team vision:

  • To foster an inclusive and spirited community that empowers individuals to embrace their true selves, celebrate diversity, and nurture personal growth.

Together, students are charting the course for Redlands’ future, and we’re immensely proud to be part of this journey with such dedicated and passionate individuals.

Theatresports Success

On Wednesday evening, our Year 7 Theatresports Team competed against 8 schools at St Andrews’ Cathedral School at the Theatresports Schools Challenge and placed First! They will now perform in the Finals! The students are incredibly excited and this is an exceptional achievement. The students in the team are: Sienna de Saxe, Fergus Kerr, Charlie Li, Clementine Roumanoff, Mackenzie Willis.

Thank you to their Theatresports tutor, Amber Virtue for doing such an exceptional job in training our students.

Independent Study – What Works and What Does Not!

As we approach Week 3 and our first Examination Block, many Year 7 and Year 10 students will devote significant periods of time to independent study over the weekend. To support these students and those in Year 8 and 9, who sit their examinations in Week 4, our top revision reminders below should assist parents and carers.

Yr 11 Camp

Last week marked a memorable and unique experience for the cohort at Yr 11 Camp. Students embraced new groups, new friendships, new teachers, new experiences and learned to be flexible as the camp environment always lends itself to changes. Students modelled their incredible ability to pivot, support one another and make the most of these experiences on offer to them. There was an overwhelming sense of appreciation and positive energy from the students and it truly resonated throughout the cohort over the week.

Thursday evening’s celebration was especially memorable. Each group shared out their best moments on camp, their worst moments on camp and the hardest challenges they faced. Students enjoyed an incredible meal, prepared by a chef who spent all week preparing for them. Jasmine Black and Isaac Brooks also spoke to their cohort to frame this experience and to wrap up the week as they prepare to return to school. They said to “cherish these moments as this year will fly by and we want to remember Yr 12.”

Student camp reflections included –

“I saw snow for the first time! We made a snow angel!”

“We learned that you don’t really learn or appreciate anything unless you step out of your comfort zone. It was hard and challenging but fun!”

“I loved how our group bonded throughout the week and we remained close through the last day.”

Each and every day, I learn something from these students. As groups were sharing what they were taking away from camp, I shared what I take away and learn about them on a daily basis, including:

  • How passionate they are and when they put their mind to something they are absolutely unstoppable
  • How they have huge hearts and they demonstrate their compassion for others constantly
  • How they can manage more than they give themselves credit for at times
  • How when they think they are demonstrating a weakness, they are actually showcasing their strengths in being honest and vulnerable and these are some of my favourite moments and memories with them

Over the term break, I was reminded of some advice that I also shared with students at camp around how to set a goal and reach a goal. One piece of the advice I focused on was to ” learn how to get where you want to go.” Oftentimes, students may know what they want to accomplish, they may even have an idea of how to get there. However, when plans change or issues arise, the roadmap suddenly looks different, unfamiliar and students can disconnect and lose focus. Students were encouraged to LEARN what needed to be done, speak to their peers, speak to their parents and teachers and actively organise a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C for when Plan B does not work out. In that moment when plans go astray, each student will have a choice to learn another way to get to their destination or to sit back and wait for life to happen. They may not always know how to reach their goal yet being willing to LEARN is essential to accomplish their goal.

Thank you to our Head of Outdoor Education, Edward Atkins, our Dean of Activities, Jon Gray, support staff at camp, Wendy Duckworth and Lisa McDonald, our incredible teacher leaders, Tom Ragell, Igor Srbinovski, Alex Thomas, Joe Montz, Chris Allen, Charlotte Berkeley, Brigida Nocera, Phoebe Poon, Michael Andreatta, Kim Novokmet, Rosie Peterson, Gen Comino and Kirsten Philips. Also, thank you to the incredible OEG staff, led by Michael Hall, who worked with Redlands staff to make last week a success for our students.

Yr 12 Induction

Thank you to all parents who joined the celebrations on Tuesday this week to induct the new Yr 12 students and the new Yr 12 Student Leadership team. Students have embraced this new position in the school and there has been a really positive energy across the cohort and campus. Student uniforms have never looked better and the Yr 12 Jerseys have not been taken off since receiving them last Thursday. It’s an exciting time on campus for our students.

Thank you and a job well done to Hamish Campbell for reading the Acknowledgement of Country, Sholto Mirrlees-Black for performing an incredible piece by Antonio Vivaldi and Hallie Hunt and Olivia Everingham for leading the National Anthem and School Song.

As a reminder, Yr 11 IB Assessment Booklet 2023 continues into Term 4. Any changes to this schedule have been communicated with students through classes. Yr 12 HSC 2024 Term 4 Assessment Calendar is linked in Pulse on the Yr 11 Page.

Science Recognition

The 2023 International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in Science is undertaken by over 400,000 students across Australia and the region and is a rigorous test of scientific thinking. Participation in the competition provides our students with excellent examination practice and an opportunity to see how they fare in competition with students of their own age from across the country. Scientific skills such as experimentation, empirical observation, logical reasoning, scientific analysis and critical thinking not only help you do well in STEM subjects – they are critical components of humankind’s most successful system for pursuing knowledge: the scientific method. A High Distinction in this competition represents the top 1% of the participants while a Distinction is the next top 10%.

Congratulations to the following Yr 11 Students:

Nisya Sashpal – Distinction Biology and Chemistry
William Cooper – Distinction Biology
Alexander Arnold – Distinction Chemistry
Aditya Sarkar – Distinction Chemistry and Physics
Jocelyn Wang – High Distinction Chemistry

Australian Science Olympiads

The Australian Science Olympiads are a national enrichment program for secondary science students offered in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth and Environmental science. High achievement in the program can lead to students being selected to represent Australia in the International Science Olympiads.

Throughout the year, students’ study one or more of these scientific disciplines and then in early August sit a challenging examination that tests their knowledge, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Congratulations to the following Yr 11 Students:

Annie Zhang – Biology
Bianca Goggin – Biology
Emilie Leroux – Biology
Anna Otto – Biology and Chemistry
Amelia Barter – Chemistry

Debating RDC – Term 4 Starts 20 October

New Debaters

All students in Years 7-11 who are new to debating and would like to be considered for a 2024 competitive team need to trial this term. Please email Mrs Beggs and attend RDC/Trials from 3:30pm-5:30pm on the dates below.

If students are not sure they want to be on a team, this is a great chance to see if debating is right for them. Students are asked to email Mrs Beggs to let her know.

Existing Debaters

All 2023 ISDA, FED, SDN, and RDC debaters are expected to come to internal (RDC) debating for the rest of term in order to keep up training, practice debates and feedback.

These debates (the best ones) will also be used to inform team selection for 2024.

If students are NOT wishing to attend or be considered for 2024 team selection,  or if they will be running late due to a musical or other commitments, please let Mrs Beggs know via email.

Students are asked to arrive promptly at 3:30pm – we will be sorting you into teams then, on a week to week basis.

Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 21-27 April 2024

Redlands will be offering a Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 21-27 April 2024. This Tour will be open to current Year 9 and 10 students.

In this cultural immersion, students will revisit and build on the ideas they were introduced to in last year’s Culture College Camp, consolidating knowledge and understanding. After a brief stay at the Gulkula site students will travel to one of the remote Yolngu Homeland areas, usually Nyinyikay. This offers the opportunity for a much more personal, extensive, and detailed exploration of Yolngu culture than was possible on the year group Camp.

Visiting and spending time in a Yolngu Homeland is something few people ever get to experience. Students will be immersed in the living culture of Aboriginal clans of East Arnhem Land, one of the most culturally intact and pristine regions left on Earth. This unique program provides privileged access and interaction with the Yolngu people and their lands of which they have been the traditional owners for over 50,000 years.

This Tour is an opportunity for students who are ready and willing to consider more deeply the knowledge they gained previously and how to effect change for the future. We are proud to be working with Culture College to provide opportunities for connection between cultures.

The cost of the tour is $5,395. A proposed itinerary and booking form can be found on Pulse.

Bookings and payments are made directly to Culture College, so please check their Terms and Conditions on the Booking Form.

Year 9

Yr 9 UTS Start Up Excursion

On Tuesday, a group of Year 9 students spent the day thinking like entrepreneurs as they participated in a masterclass run by UTS Startups. The 25 students were selected based on their successful pitch to their ‘client’ as part of their Commerce Intrapreneurship Program in Term 3.

Building Confidence in Public Speaking

In their first session at UTS Startups, the students delved into the art of public speaking and pitching. The aim was to boost their confidence when addressing an audience. They were encouraged to confront the fears that may have been holding them back and instead choose to amplify their message. Interestingly, many students reported that simply acting with more confidence and applying some of the tools they heard helped them to forget about their fears and exist in the moment instead.

Opportunity Identification and Product Creation

The second workshop focused on opportunity identification, where students were tasked with creating a product to sell on Etsy. This involved analysing data to spot market trends as well as gaps. The student teams needed to blend those insights with their creative ideas to quickly generate something they thought would fulfil a need in the market. To further enhance their product presentation, they utilized DALL E 3, a powerful AI tool, to rapidly generate company logos and images of their products.

In a remarkable display of creativity and innovation, our students managed to create products that not only aligned with market demand but also showcased their unique perspectives. What is more impressive is that they accomplished all of this in under two hours, a testament to their ability to adapt and learn quickly.

Lunch at Spice Alley and UTS Campus Tour

After an enriching morning of learning and creating, the students enjoyed a well-deserved lunch at the vibrant Spice Alley, known for its delicious Asian cuisine. The day continued with a tour of the remarkable UTS campus, providing them with insights into the world of higher education and innovation.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our hosts at UTS Startups for providing our students with this invaluable experience. The knowledge and skills they gained will undoubtedly serve them well in their future endeavors.

Piloting the Opportunity Identification Program

We know there will be a range of students interested in participating in something similar. On Friday 27 October, UTS Startups will be speaking to the entire Year 9 cohort about entrepreneurialism and potential avenues for exploration. We are also running a pilot program later this term which is based on what the students experienced at the masterclass and is run in partnership with UTS Startups. The pilot program is called Rapid Value Creation (RVC) and all Year 9 students were invited to express their interest.

As we pilot this program, we will gather valuable insights and feedback that will help us shape future educational offerings at Redlands. It is an exciting step toward fostering entrepreneurship and innovation among our students.

Australia World Scout Jamboree 2023 Reflection – Will Raymond

I had the massive privilege to be chosen to go and represent Australia at the World Scout Jamboree 2023 for three chaotic, hot and fun weeks. While we were there we got to do cool activities such us white water rafting, exploring Seoul and so much more. One of the most amazing parts was that we got to socialise with the other 170 countries and other 51,000 Scouts walking in the same mud we did. It was a great experience to be able to walk up to anyone wearing a scarf and say “where are you from?” and be able to make an entire conversation with someone when I didn’t even know their name. It was certainly hard doing this Jaboree. From the 40-45 degree weather at all times (even at night), to the millions of bugs that seemed to always be orbiting around you, to the massive amount of walking on the 8.8 square kilometre campsite – all of it was amazingly challenging. Overall, this experience was a blast; from the “character building” to the socialising. I enjoyed every minute of it! (Even the typhoons.)

Focus on Female Friendship

Last week on Friday in our Yr 9 meeting, I spoke specifically to our female students about managing conflict in female relationships. Students started the session with meditation and breathwork to facilitate and encourage the mindset needed to listen to message they were presented. Here is a summary of the key messages I presented to Yr 9 female students:

  • Conflict within female relationships is normal. It’s how you navigate that conflict that will make all the difference.
  • It’s important to recognise conflict as a symptom for what might be underlying in each individual – emotional expressions of anger, disappointment and fear, and that these behaviours provide an insight into the way we all solidify friendships and practise social manoeuvring.
  • It’s normal to not like everybody, all the time. Not only is it OK for you to acknowledge that — it’s healthy.
  • There is no expectation that you have to be friends with everyone — but you should be friendly.

Some Strategies to Avoid Conflict and Aid Social and Emotional Development:

  • Don’t socially exclude or gossip – it does not demonstrate respect, compassion or moral courage.
  • Don’t exclude others using social media or text messages.
  • Be your own person and remember that other people matter – be an upstander!
  • Don’t compare yourself to what’s trending on social media – it’s unhealthy and unproductive.
  • Don’t focus on others perceived failings – affirm all that you and your peers have done and are yet to do!
  • It’s normal to shift and change groups at this stage in your adolescent development – this movement will happen over the next months and years as we move into different educational settings and programs.
  • Admit your mistakes and apologise.

Winter School 2024 – Expressions of Interest

Mr Atkins will be speaking with Yr 9 briefly on Friday about the application process for Winter School 2024. Students will be asked to communicate with Mr Atkins directly via email to express their interest in being considered for Winter School 2024. This will need to be completed by Friday 27 October. The Winter School application process involves a few steps for our Yr 9 students over the next 2-3 terms and more information will be provided to those students who put forward their EOI.

Year 8

Coaching Conversations

Throughout the course of the week, Year 8 students and their Tutors have been engaging in Coaching Conversations. This is a one-to-one conversation which helps students reflect on their previous term and set appropriate goals for the term to come.

In our opening assembly for the term, Ms Van de Peer outlined a focus for two goals to be considered. The first was a goal with an academic focus. With an assessment period coming about, students were encouraged to set a habit-based goal tied to exam preparation so that this could be added to their study repertoire throughout their schooling. The message was to start and build good habits early so that they are second nature later on when the workload increases.

The second goal was to be designed around the idea that ‘other people matter’. This prompt asks students to consider how they could put a simple goal in place to improve their awareness of, and interactions with their peers, teachers or the local community. Examples include; ‘greeting those who stand at the front gate each morning’, ‘not walking down the street looking at a phone with my head down’, ‘not contributing to group chats where the discussions are becoming negative’ or ‘picking up a chore at home’.

It was very pleasing to hear (and have) a number of these conversations with students. Many of whom have clearly given thought to what they want to achieve over the next few weeks. I would highly encourage you to ask your student/s about this conversation, what their goals were and if there was anything that could be done to assist them to achieve these goals.

Managing Distractions

If you are interested I have recently come across an older article from ReachOut that provides some practical tips on helping teens avoid distractions during study. Please see this link for further reading.

Year 7

Inducting our New Year 12 Leaders

This week was special one in the school calendar as we officially inducted our Yr 11 students into Yr 12, recognising them and the new student leadership team. Yr 7 watched the assembly with great focus, perhaps imagining themselves on the stage one day in the far distant future; however, as newly inducted school captain, Jasmine reflected as she spoke to the audience, it seemed like just yesterday that she was sitting on the floor as a Yr 7 student, watching the swearing in of her new Yr 12 Leadership team, and now she was on the stage. While there is a lot of time for Yr 7 between now and their own Yr 12 experience, I am sure it will come faster than any of us think.

New School Captains Isaac and Jasmine spoke with warmth, passion and humility to the assembly audience. They emphasised the importance of authenticity and affirmed that they will strive to be authentic and approachable captains. Their speech, including Jasmine’s revelation that she has a phobia of yoghurt and Isaac’s reflection that he really needs to work on his driving skills (not a good driver but definitely very driven!), certainly highlighted their authenticity. Our Head of School, Mr Corcoran, also supported this message of authenticity by discussing the powerful servant leader examples embodied by Nelson Mandela and Maya Angelou. There were some valuable messages offered for our Yr 7 cohort to reflect on.

The week has also been an important one for Yr 7 in building their study habits and in revising for their Week 3 Examinations. The aim of these Yearly Examinations for students in Yr 7 is not just about performance, but also about cultivating effective study habits and routines that will serve them well as they progress towards their Senior Studies. I am confident our Yr 7 cohort will learn a great deal from their experiences next week. While it may be a challenging week for some, it will build their resilience, organisation and work habits.

The Examination timetable can be found on the Yr 7 Pulse page.

Tutors have also been engaging in Growth Conversations with students across this week, with students reflecting on how to achieve their best in their study and examination preparation, and the examinations themselves, and also considering how best to show their care for others in light of our term value that ‘other people matter.’

It has been very pleasing to hear of the thought students have put into these conversations, particularly in light of their close consideration of what they want to achieve over the next few weeks. I would highly encourage you to ask your child/ren about these conversations, what their goals were and if there was anything that could be done to assist them to achieve these goals.

Theatresports Success!

Yesterday evening, our Year 7 Theatresports team competed against 8 schools at St Andrews Cathedral School at the Theatresports Schools Challenge. After some entertaining competition, the team placed First overall and will now perform at the finals!

This is a wonderful achievement and thee students are incredibly excited! Congratulations to the team of Sienna de Saxe, Fergus Kerr, Charlie Li, Clementine Roumanoff and Mackenzie Willis.

Thank you also to their Theatresports tutor, Amber Virtue, for doing such an exceptional job in training our students and building their confidence.

New Zealand Exchange Opportunity for T1 2024:

Next year, the school will be offering an opportunity for a student exchange to NZ in February and March. Four Yr 7 students will have the opportunity to travel to Kristin School near Auckland for three weeks in February, and the School, will in turn, host four Kristin students in March. Kristin is an independent coeducational school and has an extensive exchange program, in which we have participated for several years. Find out more.

Redlands students will travel to Auckland for three weeks from Saturday 3 February to Saturday 24 February 2024. Students will stay with a Kristin host family. They will attend the Kristin Year Group Camp for one of the three weeks and go to classes with their host partner for the remaining two. Kristin students will travel to stay with their exchange partner and family in Sydney from Saturday 2 March to Saturday 23 March. Kristin students will attend Year 8 camp with their partner in the first week, joining normal classes and activities after that.

This program would suit students who are fully involved in the life of the School, are prepared to be involved in the life of Kristin, and will be excellent ambassadors for Redlands when overseas. For further information and to provide an EOI, please visit Pulse.

Parent Appreciation – Thank You

The voluntary roles that so many Redlands parents play has a significant impact on fostering and strengthening the palpable sense of school community that embodies Redlands. It also serves as a great example of an altruistic mentality that volunteering models to our children as well as others.

On Tuesday, we held the final meeting of our 2023 Junior School Class Parent representatives and along with Mr Corcoran and also on behalf of all our Junior School families and teachers, we were able to thank this group for the role that they have played in building relationships and friendships within Junior School classes and year groups this year.

Leading and supporting these parents, we have been fortunate to have had the leadership of Catherine Grinham and Michelle McDonald in the role of Junior School Parent Group Coordinators this year and I extend my appreciation to them both for their calm, organised, people-focused guidance and for being such an important conduit between the School and our parent community; it has made a difference and I have personally been grateful for their counsel over the year. Looking ahead to 2024, Michelle and Catherine were delighted to announce Jennie Cadman and Mayumi Staley-Lobo as the Junior School Parent Group Coordinators for 2024.

More widely, I acknowledge the parents who have selflessly served our community in roles this year including members of our School Board of Directors, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association, Class Parent representatives, the Foundation Steering Committee, Friends of Groups, Redlanders Alumni Association and Autumn Fair support, along with the many parents who have taken the time to share their expertise and wisdom in the context of supporting learning or cocurricular activities.

Volunteer Thank You

Next week, I am looking forward to joining staff and Board Directors at our annual School ‘thank you’ to our many parent volunteers, whose dedication and service to our community makes such a significant difference to Redlands.

Living Our School Values

I often talk to our students about how impactful and significant living our School Values is, particularly when no one is watching. As teachers and parents, we cannot be there at every opportunity or moment but hope the students make good values-based choices, simply because it is the right thing to do.

Yesterday, the School took a call from an elderly lady who had got off at the same bus stop as a Redlands student to be greeted by pouring rain. The student noticed that she did not have an umbrella and was getting drenched so generously offered to share her umbrella the short walk to their respective homes on the same street. I was able to pass on this gratitude to Ella Feller in Yr 6 today who was surprised that the lady had contacted the School for something that she had not seen as extraordinary, which also says much about Ella.

Term 4 Parent Topic Talk

Recharging in the School Holidays: Powering Up for the Year Ahead

Join our Junior Campus counsellor-led workshop, Recharging in the school holidays: Powering up for the year ahead, where we’ll discuss making the most of the holidays to prepare your child for the upcoming school year. We’ll explore a range of strategies you can put in place to support your child’s mental wellness during the holidays, such as keeping them engaged, setting realistic goals for sleep and physical activity, and managing technology use. We will also focus on the importance of fostering healthy relationships within your family as well as with your child’s peers throughout the holiday period. All the practical tools provided in this presentation can help your child feel more prepared and confident for the new school year.

Owen Beck – Head of Junior School for a Day

Last term’s Gala Ball was a wonderful community success and as those present may recall, one of the auction items was for a student to step into my shoes for a day as ‘Head of Junior School’. This took place this week and Yr 6 student, Owen Beck (or Mr Beck as he was known for the day!) had the opportunity to enjoy a range of experiences and opportunities in his role. Across the day, Owen assisted on playground duty, joined and spoke briefly at the Parent Coordinator group meeting, attended the Secondary School Student Leadership Induction assembly, enjoyed lunch off site, spoke at Junior School assembly and spent time visiting classrooms. He also extended lunch break by ten minutes and allowed students ‘free time’ for the last part of the afternoon after assembly which was a big hit!

Student Safety Reminders

Students were reminded again in assembly that they are not to go to the Shell petrol station before or after school for safety reasons. The forecourt is particularly busy with vehicles entering from multiple entries and is a potential accident waiting to happen with no pedestrian walkway. I ask parents to reinforce this expectation to support our safety expectations.

I also take this opportunity to remind parents that unless involved in pre-arranged activities, the end of the school day and pick up is at 3.20pm. We seem to have a growing number of children who are playing unsupervised waiting to be picked up until up to 4pm. Please be reminded that students in Yrs 4-6 can utilise the Library as a learning space on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 4pm if required.

Additionally, we have made a significant improvement to our Junior students’ experience by transitioning them to a dedicated space that is just for them in the Junior School Atrium area on Level 2 of the Peter Cornish building, just above the Junior School Reception going up the stairs. This strategic move allows us to offer a more tailored and enriching environment to our Junior School students. Each group now has a designated team of educators who will facilitate activities specifically planned to cater to their age and interests, including time for home learning. This shift ensures that our students receive the individualised attention and care they deserve while enjoying themselves in a safe and engaging environment.

Thank You to Our PCG and Parent Volunteers

I would like to extend my deepest thanks and appreciation to all the parent representatives who volunteered their time and energy to be part of our PCG group this year. Without the restrictions of COVID  this year, we have been able to explore and expand our Prep and Redlands House community connections through the positive networks that the PCG established and nourished throughout the year. As Mr Corcoran said in our meeting this week, there are so many things that go on behind the scenes that people don’t know about and it takes a lot to organise groups of busy people to stop, come together and enjoy time to get to know each other. Thank you for being those people! Connectedness is such a vital part of a school community and I believe that our Prep world has that in spades thanks to you all.

On a personal note, I know that I speak for all our Prep and Redlands House families when I say a huge thank you to Ms Jen Mast who has led the Prep PCG over the last few years. Jen has led the group through the challenging COVID years when the community tried so many ways to connect and support each other online. We look forward to working with her again as she joins the RPFA as secretary. Jenny Krallis will continue to lead and coordinate the parent representatives into 2024. A big thanks to Jenny for all her hard work this year alongside Jen.

Volunteer Thank You

Next week I am looking forward to attending the thank you evening for our volunteers. On behalf of all the staff, thank you to everyone who has been able to come on campus and share precious time with our young learners. It can be a scary thing at first to do but the positive energy and connection that comes as a result is priceless. Thank you.

Preparatory School Maths Week

A Message from Ciara Harding, Junior Campus Numeracy Specialist

Wednesday 18 October marks the commencement of our Mats Weeks at Redlands. The primary objective of this year’s Maths Week is to celebrate all things maths and cultivate a genuine enthusiasm for learning mathematics.

This week, students will have many opportunities to explore a diverse array of puzzles and activities designed to enhance students’ comprehension and mastery of numerical concepts. Additionally, Redlands is privileged to host Inquisitive Minds a whole-school incursion focused on honing problem-solving skills, right here in Dunnet Hall. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will participate in these sessions, affording them the opportunity to acquire a spectrum of problem-solving techniques and put them to the test.

With the commencement of Maths Week, I thought it would be a great opportunity spotlight two fundamental pillars of our mathematics pedagogy here at Redlands: fluency and reasoning. Over the past decade, both national and international research into mathematics education has underscored the pivotal roles that fluency and reasoning play in nurturing mathematical literacy in our contemporary world. In times gone by, mathematical competence was predominantly associated with the proficiency in executing basic arithmetic operations. However, with the digitisation of numerous facets of our lives, the omnipresence of data, and the emergence of substantial global challenges like pandemics, population surges, and climate shifts, the landscape of mathematical competence has undergone a paradigm shift.

As teachers, our mission is to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to engage as discerning, contemplative, and insightful mathematical citizens of the 21st century. It is imperative that students possess fluency across a spectrum of strategies, complemented by a comprehensive understanding of when and why to employ a particular approach. Furthermore, students must grasp how to engage in mathematical reasoning, enabling them to make judicious decisions rooted in numerical data, quantity assessments, and mathematical constructs.

Mathematical fluency refers to the ability to perform mathematical operations accurately, efficiently, and flexibly. It involves a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and the ability to apply them in various contexts. A mathematically fluent individual can readily compute, estimate, and reason about numbers and operations. Importantly, it is about developing a toolbox of strategies for approaching mathematical problems. This includes mental maths techniques, estimation methods and a flexible approach to calculation.  Mathematical reasoning, as defined by the OECD, involves evaluating situations, selecting strategies, drawing logical conclusions, developing, and describing solutions and recognising how those solutions can be applied. It involves the ability to think critically, make connections and solve problems by applying mathematical principles.

We are so very excited to jump into Maths Week and to share the enjoyment with you.

Term 4 Clubs Are Up and Running

Chess Club – A Message from Madam Merlot

We’re excited to announce the launch of our Chess Club this term. The Chess Club provides an energizing environment where beginner players engage in exciting matches, embracing the spirit of healthy competition. Students actively participate in round robin rounds, challenging opponents of diverse skill levels, allowing them to sharpen their abilities and strategies.

Not only does the club encourage critical thinking, patience, and sportsmanship, it also serves as a platform for students to proudly showcase their chess skills. As the tournament concludes, the top performers are recognised for their exceptional efforts with the ultimate reward: a trophy!

Artsy Fartsy, Crafty Kids and Art Hub Clubs

A huge thank you to Ms Wale, Ms Mast and Ms Thomas who volunteer their time every week to come and run a Lunchtime Club. Students who attend these Clubs have such fun and always bring out the sweetest craft creations at the end of every session. These craft sessions provide precious time for learners to chat, have fun and build their confidence and resilience in a safe and nurturing environment.

Science Club

I enjoyed watching our first Science Club this week and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Our first session together looked at a cell and they even got to build one! I was so impressed with the engagement of every student who participated, and we look forward to more little scientists enjoying the experience.

Friendship and Library Clubs

Friendship and Library Clubs continue to provide a space for students to sit, chat, play and enjoy each other’s company while playing games, puzzles or colouring. Our counsellors are on hand to provide support and little friendship tips throughout the time while the library space is always a welcoming quiet and calm environment to read and play board games.

2024 Kindergarten Orientation

Day One

What a day was had in Kindergarten on Wednesday as we welcomed 74 students into the Kindy rooms to meet each other and start to familiarise themselves with what big school looks, sounds and smells like.

Overall, most of our new Prep friends approached the day with courage and a smile. We had a few wobbly moments of saying goodbye but once we met the Kindy teachers and started engaging in fun activities, it was joyful chatter all round.

As I drove home that afternoon, I reflected on the morning and was in awe of just how resilient and brave 4 year olds can be. I am excited to get to know our new Kindy friends and welcome them into our community.

Next week we welcome them back again as well as their parents for a meet and greet session in the Arnold Library.

Changes to Storypark

Recently we have been reflecting on our how we use Storypark for class communication. We are reviewing what information we send home, how often and the justification on how much time this can possibly take away from our precious time with the children. This term we will reduce the weekly updates about your child’s class and only report on special events. Later in the term, will we seek your feedback and conduct a survey to assess the way we can use Storypark best. If you have any questions or would like to provide feedback, please talk to your class teacher or Mrs Huon.

Secondary Sport

Creating a positive culture within the Redlands sporting community and within our sporting teams is paramount when working with young adults for several reasons. Positive culture fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie, which is essential for young athletes’ overall development. It helps them build strong relationships with their peers, coaches and with the sport itself. This sense of belonging reduces the likelihood of social isolation and enhances their motivation to stay engaged in sports.

Positive culture is also important character development when young adults in Secondary School are in a critical phase of their lives where they are forming their values and beliefs. Sports can be a powerful tool for instilling values like teamwork, discipline and perseverance. A nurturing culture reinforces these values, teaching young adults to be responsible, respectful and resilient individuals.

A positive sporting culture also plays pivotal roles in mental and emotional wellbeing, the open communication that is encouraged helps in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. It provides support systems where young adults can discuss their challenges, anxieties and successes which in turn helps to reduce stress and fosters a healthier mindset.

Young athletes in a positive sporting culture tend to be more motivated, focused and willing to push their boundaries. This can lead to improved skills, performance and a passion for the sport that endures throughout their lives.

At Redlands we strive to continually enhance and develop the culture within sport to make a pivotal impact on students on their sports journey.

‘If you spend your time chasing butterflies, they’ll fly away. If you spend your time making a beautiful garden, the butterflies will come to you, and if they don’t come, you still have your garden.’

Staff Movements

Ms Kate Seebohm – Assistant Head of Sport (Coach & Student Development)

Sadly, Kate will be leaving Redlands at the start of November, relocating to Townsville to be closer to her family. Kate began working at Redlands seven years ago at the beginning of 2017 and has had a profound impact on the School and Sport programs. In her time at Redlands, she has built strong relationships with the Redlands community, she has demonstrated an innovative and creative coaching and administration style and shared her passion for Sport and Basketball. Kate has been a tremendous asset to the Sports Department working as a Sports Administrator looking after Basketball, Football and the Non-Representative Sports, earlier this year she was promoted to the newly created role of Assistant Head of Sport (Coach & Student Development). Kate’s enthusiastic willingness to get involved saw her coach the Redlands 1st V Girls basketball team to a 3 peat of ISA Division 1 Championships (2019, 2021, 2022) with a 2-year undefeated streak. Kate’s professionalism, generous and passionate nature will be missed in the School community as we wish her all the best with her future endeavours.

Fitness Centre

Welcome to the Fitness Centre for Term 4, 2023. The following changes to the Fitness Centre and our strength and conditioning program will begin over the course of the first few weeks of term.

Session times are staggered to provide more students access each morning with safe and effective coaching.

Year 11-12: 6:30-6:45am Latest Arrival/Start Time

Year 9-10: 6:45am Start Time

Year 7/8: 7:10am Start time.

Afternoon sessions are reserved for Rep sports.

ALL students will be provided a program that runs M/T/T/F mornings, except for Wednesday mornings Girls Only session. These programs will be aligned to our physical development framework and are designed to support the stage based physical development of students from Years 7-12 in a safe and effective manner, whilst including individual student needs and ambitions within the gym.

All programs encompass a variation of the following:

  • Lower Body Push: Double + Single Leg – e.g., Squat, Split Squat
  • Lower Body Pull: Double + Single Leg – e.g., Deadlift, Single Leg RDL (Hinge)
  • Upper Body Pull – Vertical + Horizontal -e.g., Chin Up, Bench Pull
  • Upper Body Push – Vertical + Horizontal -e.g., Push Press, Bench Press
  • Core – Anti-Extension + Anti- Lateral Flexion/Rotation – e.g, Plank, Side Plank
  • Injury Prevention – Optional + Recommended

Programs are designed to target each of these areas within a session and across the week in a variety of loads to ensure each student gets the opportunity to develop a solid foundation and variety of movement competency whether they attend one session or attend all four.

Injury Prevention exercises will always be included in session to target areas that are prone to overuse and soft tissue eg. Hamstrings, Quads, Calf, Adductors.

As students’ consistently attend sessions, progress through programs and movement competency, they will be provided with more autonomy within their program.

Years 7-8 will be provided with a full (100%) program that encompasses all fundamental movement patterns and areas of the body.

Years 9-10 will be provided with a program that is 75% structured and 25% of the session encompassing self-elected exercises as discussed with the coach.

Years 11-12 will be provided with a program that is 50% structured, leaving 50% of the session to include exercises elected by the student as discussed with the coach.

Individual Student Programs: Exceptions to the program are made for students who are participating in state level or above external sporting programs, where programs are provided by an accredited coach and/or if a student is undergoing any rehabilitation from an injury, where documentation is provided from a physiotherapist.

Rowing

On Saturday 14 October we were able to recognise the significant contribution that a number of people have made to the Rowing program and the School as part of our boat naming. There were three single sculls named after past Rowing captains:

  • Matthew Fry: 2022-2023 – Redlands Male Captain of Rowing
  • Hugo Burton-Morris: 2011-2012 – Redlands Male Captain of Rowing

We also named two stern coxed quads after some significant people within the Rowing program:

Sailing

Last week saw an action-packed start to the Redlands Sailing program, with all sailors completing their start of season safety drill on Thursday! Not only a good way to cool off in the 34 degree heat, but also a way to build confidence and skill required to right their capsized boats. Saturday brought more action and excitement with the first racing event of the Redlands series, with two races counting towards the final point score. This racing presented the first opportunity for some of the sailors to take part in the competitive side of sailing and experience the excitement that side of the sport has to offer.

All sailors are currently honing their racing skills and development, with the current goal of representing Redlands in the Redlands Cup Regatta against a range of schools from around Sydney, hosted at RSYS on Saturday 18 November.

This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sports – Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday Sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Representative Sport Team Movement

In regard to representative sport and the movement of players across ability-based teams, it is transparent for all parties as unexplained team movements sometimes cause unnecessary stress. At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY in direct comparison to other students across the sport
ATTENDANCE any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved
ATTITUDE  this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Have a great term.

Years 10-11 Cocurricular Drama Production – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Our Years 10-11 Cocurricular Drama Production presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Term 4 at the Zenith Theatre at Chatswood, 1920’s style! A Midsummer Night’s Dream: the tale of Hermia, Demetrius, Lysander, and Helena; four misguided lovers who’s journey into the woods lands them in even more trouble, as members of the fairy kingdom decide to use them as veritable pawns in their own love games. Against the backdrop of the wedding of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta, and the fiery battle of wills between the Fairy King and Queen, Oberon and Titania, the four lovers are challenged by magic and trickery to finally work out what love is all about. We invite all to attend.

Year 9 Drama Excursion – The Visitors

Year 9 Drama attended a thought-provoking and insightful theatre production at the Opera House on Wednesday 11 October. The Visitors is a Sydney Theatre Award-winning production from the 2020 Sydney Festival, by Muruwari playwright Jane Harrison. It explored seven clan leaders in January 1788 who share a momentous decision. It was a highly effective exploration of the elements of drama and impact on audience, which Year 9 Drama have explored throughout the year.

Year 9 Drama Showcase – Docudrama

Over the past term, Year 9 Drama students have been working on their performance assessment pieces for their current topic, Docudrama. Students have engaged with the conventions and techniques of Epic Theatre by using newspaper headlines and research into previous historic events to explore an event or issue of their choice. Exploring these performance forms demonstrates how our own true stories can be powerful and provocative material for performance work. The performance evenings will run over two nights, Monday 23 October and Tuesday 24 October in the Drama Studio. The performances will begin at 6.30pm, we warmly invite you to attend, there is no booking needed.

Drama and Theatre – Student of the Week: Nico Thompson

Nico is an exceptional member of our lunchtime Senior Acting Club. His attendance, behaviour and attitude are always outstanding. He has been chosen for this week’s Drama and Theatre student of the week not only due to his talent, creative ability and rather hilarious comic timing, but also because of his continued commitment to his peers, the Acting Club, the various characters he plays and the scenes we are developing. Well done, Nico! (Amber Virtue – Cocurricular Senior Acting, Drama Tutor)

Inaugural Senior Music Festival Composition Competition

For the first time ever, we will hold a competition for a student composition to be created and performed at the 2024 Senior Music Festival, written for and by our students. We know music isn’t just about performing, and we are so excited to see how our talented student composers interpret this theme.

The successful candidate for this competition, due early Term 1, will have their composition featured as part of the festival.

The composition should:

  • Imaginatively interpret the Senior Music Festival theme of Kaleidoscope
  • Be three minutes or less in length
  • Be written for an existing ensemble performing at the Senior Music Festival.

For more information, students should check the Music Department Auditions iLearn course.
