Head of Junior School

We are looking forward to welcoming our Junior School students back on Monday 25 October and during assemblies this week, we have talked to our students about aspects of what will look the same and what might be different. The wearing of masks is an obvious one and our Student Wellbeing team shared this video with the students about why we will be wearing masks, which you might find helpful too as you talk with your child.

As well as during assembly, in class Circle Time, our Student Wellbeing team led conversations on what the return to On-Campus Learning will look like and the importance for looking out for one another. While there’s lots of excitement in the air, we know that for some, there may be some worries too.

Here are 5 tips for preparing your child for Return to On-Campus Learning from one of our counsellors, Ms Clark:

  1. Discuss things openly and regularly check in with your child about how they are feeling. For example, “How do you feel about going back school? What can help make it easier for you? What makes you feel excited about going back? What worries you about going back? How can we work together to support you?”
  2. Redlands is here to help– remind them of the names of people who can support them at school so they are reminded who to turn to if things get tricky.
  3. Plan ahead. If there is something worrying them about going back to school, determine what could make it easier for them and put a plan in place. For example, if they are worried about drop offs, explain to them what this will look like for the time being, that school is a safe place, and perhaps plan so that a friend can meet them at the gate so they can go in together.
  4. Remind them of their resilience. With all of the changes they have already conquered, remind them that they have already shown such great resilience and ability to adapt already, and that you are confident that they can do it again.
  5. As worry and anxiety can be contagious, try look after yourself so that you can provide a calm and reassuring base for your child.

At the start of next week, I will send a detailed letter to Junior School families with an overview of our specific return to school plans and guidelines keeping community safety at the forefront of our thinking.

What if my child is not coming back on Monday 25 October?

As outlined by Mr Webber in his letter, online learning resources will be provided this term for students who may remain at home. With teachers leading face-to-face learning, there will not be the live connection via Zoom but class teachers are already planning on ways to keep these students connected.

To assist with our forward planning, please could any families planning to keep their child(ren) at home complete this form which will assist us greatly in preparations to support every student.

Return to School Parent Webinar

Ahead of the return to On-Campus Learning, I am pleased to host a webinar for families to join in if they wish to around our return to school plans with information and Zoom link/ passcode within the flyer.

Thank You to our Class Parent Representatives

This morning, along with our Principal, Mr Webber and our Head of Community Engagement, Mr Birse, I joined our Class Parent Reps at our termly meeting via Zoom for the group’s final meeting of 2021. In also recognising that not all Class Parent Reps were able to make this meeting, I wanted to acknowledge my gratitude again to these parents who have served our community in this way.

In another disjointed year, they have continued to think creatively for ways in which to welcome new families, build connections within classes and maintain relationships across year groups, embodying the spirit of School community here at Redlands. On behalf of all of our Junior School families and staff, I thank our Junior School class parents for 2021 and in particular, to the Junior School Parent Group Coordinators, Rebecca James and Becky Gait, for their leadership of the group. On a personal note, I have also valued their capacity to act as a sounding board for me as well as providing another conduit between home and school.

Year 4 Incursion

Yr 4 students have rocks in their heads – igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. To extract these rocks and minerals, we needed a rock star … enter Flynn, a mining engineer who spends his days roughly 400 metres below the surface of the earth. He helped us to make lots of connections between what happens under the ground and what happens in a game of Minecraft … yes obsidian is a thing. We learned that many of the things we use each day have been produced through mining – lights, cameras … even a match! Year Four posed some big questions such as, how can we work out the age of a rock? It was a lava fun chatting to an expert in the field who was so down to earth … that’s enough rock puns, I’m too tired to dig another one up.

From The Principal

There has definitely been a buzz around the School this week as we look ahead to the return of our Redlands House, K and Year 1 students on Monday; and celebrated our Class of 2021 at our final Year 12 Chapel Service and Assembly today.

It was a very special afternoon seeing Year 12 students, tutors and teachers gather together in Tutor Groups, appropriately spaced, in the Redlands Learning Hub for these final celebrations. Our student leaders spoke fondly and eloquently of their time at the School, thanking teachers for their support and encouragement.

We sincerely thank our not only our student leaders, but the entire Class of 2021 for their leadership during the year. We wish them all the very best as they undertake their final HSC and IB examinations and look forward to their stories of fun after the exams, and to gathering together with them early next year for their Valedictory celebrations.

A huge amount of logistical planning went into ensuring that all of our Year 12s could be back safely on campus and to enjoy being together for their final Chapel Service and Assembly. Once again, the teamwork of our dedicated staff has shone through and my sincere thanks to all who made the event possible.

I enjoyed the opportunity to attend several parent meetings this week and pass on my thanks for the wonderful support the staff have received throughout the period of Remote Learning. Feedback has been constructively provided and there has been genuine acknowledgement and thanks for the dedication of staff. The strength of the school community has been clearly demonstrated.

During Remote Learning, staff have needed continually to implement innovative solutions and an example of this has been the shift to provide virtual art exhibitions showcasing student work.

Year 12 IB Visual Arts Virtual Exhibition

Our Year 12 IB Visual Arts students have worked with Coordinator of Visual Arts, Mark Harpley, to create a wonderful virtual tour of their Year 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition, showcasing the final two years of their artmaking. To view the exhibition and hear from each student about the curatorial rationale, please click here or on the below image.

The HSC Art Exhibition will also be presented virtually using the same technology. My congratulations to all of the students and the entire Visual Arts team for the quality of the exhibition.

Year 7 2023 Scholarships

I would like to advise that applications for our Year 7 2023 Scholarships Program (Academic, Merit, Music, Ballet) are now open to both current Redlands students and those at external schools.

Thanks to the very generous donations from parents, alumni and friends within the Redlands community, we are also offering the Belinda Oxley Means-tested Scholarship for Year 7 2023 to eternal students.

Community Update

It was a genuine pleasure and privilege to be able to attend the Yr 12 Final Chapel and Farewell Assembly this afternoon.  I have been inspired by the resilience and endeavour demonstrated by this impressive cohort of students in their final years at Redlands, closely supported of course by their families and teachers.

At important occasions such as these, we give thanks for the strength of our Redlands community as we continue to work in partnership with parents and carers to make this time as positive and enriching as possible for our students and their families. Our Heads of Sections will be communicating with parents and carers in order to advise, support and guide our community’s return to On-Campus Learning.  We are ready to adjust these plans as needed to ensure the best educational opportunities for our students, while prioritising the safety and wellbeing of our staff and students. A reminder that all COVID-19 related communications to parents, including return to On-Campus Learning information, is posted on the COVID-19 Page of Redlands Pulse.

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) along with our Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) continue to keep our community connected, included and supported. It was a pleasure to attend a number of community meetings through Zoom this week to discuss current and future programs and activities.  The RPFA is drawn from dedicated and passionate parent and carer volunteers who selflessly support the growth and prosperity of our School and the wider Redlands community. Parents and carers who are interested in shaping the future of the School are invited and encouraged to attend the Redlands Parents and Friends Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) via Zoom on at 6.30pm on Thursday October 28. This is a great opportunity for new parents to hear how our Association works within, and for, our valued community. Please RSVP for the AGM here. The AGM will include:

  • a report from our Principal, Mr Stephen Webber
  • a review of the RPFA’s activities this year, along with plans for 2022
  • the election of the RPFA Committee

The meeting will run for approximately one hour. You don’t need to be a Committee member to attend and there is no obligation to nominate for positions or volunteer for activities. If you are interested in a position within the RPFA then please have a look at this document that details the various roles and responsibilities.

It is always a pleasure to hear what our alumni community have been up to and I was inspired to  read the impressive journey of Class of 1955 alumni, Barbara Wellesley AM.  Barbara’s dedicated and passionate service to the community, particularly Good Beginnings Australia, promoting childhood and family support services, along with her support of a range of child health organisations was recognised with her awarding of a Member of the Order of Australia in 2006.  Barbara’s inspiring story, along with an update from the Foundation team, can be enjoyed here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Farewell to Year 12 Students

This week our Year 12 students get together for their final assembly, which provides time to reflect on all the wonderful experiences and friendships made at Redlands. As a cohort these students also experienced the transformation of our Senior Campus. When they started their journey in the Secondary School in 2016, they would have had their core subjects taught in the Mowll building (M-block) which was a traditional style building from the 1960s, while their music lessons and visual arts classes would have been in the cottages.

During their time at Redlands the campus has transformed and a contemporary state-of-the-art building has been built. The Redlands Learning Hub is dedicated to core subjects, Mathematics, English, Social Sciences and also Visual Arts and Innovative Design, with adaptable learning spaces for class lessons, peer collaboration and individual study. There is also exhibition space to showcase creative works across Year Groups. The Fahl Garden, named after a Redlander family who contributed to previous developments on campus, is located in front of the Redlands Learning Hub, providing a wonderful outdoor space for students to connect. We are grateful to our community for the support which helped to make this development possible.

If you wish to watch the video of the Redlands Learning Hub, please visit HERE

Barbara Wellesley AM (nee Gotting) – Class 1955, Cowper and Basketball Captain

Barbara was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia in 2006 for service to the community, particularly Good Beginnings Australia, promoting childhood and family support services, and to a range of child health organizations. We are very proud to have Barbara as part of our Redlanders community and were delighted to learn about her journey after Redlands during our lockdown virtual catch up.

“When I was nine years old I decided I wanted to be a nurse and look after children. Growing up, our neighbours next door had a baby and I was allowed to look after this little boy, which gave me an interest in children.

Redlands was very caring and it was a very gentle school. Mrs Humphrey was a very gentle and warm Principal, and if you did get sent to her she would more than likely give you a lifesaver. I loved the School then and I still do now. I am still in touch with many of the lifelong friends I made, and last year when we all turned 80 we had a big party together.

After school, I did some nursing in England and when I returned I continued with extra training. I was lucky enough to work in Rural NSW and understand the issues that arise where there are not the services we have in the cities. Then I had the opportunity to start my own charity and I learnt a great deal from it.

I think every family is unique and how we respond to things is different. I learnt from a little boy who said ‘I know you are listening but I want you to hear me’. Other things that I have learnt include persistence – taking one step slowly at a time. Having a passion and letting the passion come through. Being able to tell a story and make a situation real, rather than using statistics is very powerful when influencing people such as policy makers. Honesty is really important and building and maintain relationships continues to be key focus – with staff or families or policy makers so you trust and understand each other.

I’m an ambassador for a few organisations. First Nations people are a big part of my focus now, they have an amazing culture and stories.”

Hope and Happiness

We farewell Yr 12 this afternoon with a special Final Chapel and Assembly. Safely bringing Yr 12 onto campus and enabling an IRL engagement with each other and their teachers has been the work of many staff over the past few weeks. After a thoughtful Chapel service prepared by Chaplain Ms Bronwyn Lihou, the students engage in a formal farewell assembly with speeches and prizes. A few surprises have been designed to lend an atmosphere of hope and happiness, which is how we will always remember this wonderful Yr 12 cohort. I look forward to sharing some photographs with you in next week’s Note Day.

Week 3

The weeks are flying by and we are readying ourselves on the Secondary Campus for Week 3. The Week 3 Timetable can be found here. Next week, our Yr 7 and 10 students are engaged in online assessments and time has been built into the Week 3 Timetable for Yr 8 and 9 students to engage in Independent Study, ahead of their online assessment block in Week 4. We are encouraging our students to prioritise participation in their final week engaged in Remote Learning by raising their Zoom-hand confidently and enthusiastically for the (hopefully) final few times.

Children of Essential Workers

All students attending school as the children of essential workers need to register by Friday 15 October. It is essential that all students who attend site are registered, even those in Yr 12. This is because we have tight structures in place to ensure the safety of our community and especially our Yr 12 students, at this time. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Please register here.

Online Assessments

In a typical year, all students in Yr 7-10 would engage in an Examination Block at school where they would sit three exams per day. This year, we have modified this learning experience for students so they sit shorter tasks which cover reduced content and skills. The online assessment blocks support student learning by giving them an opportunity to –

  • Prepare ahead of time
  • Experience a range of tasks
  • Practise managing pressure
  • Receive feedback on their efforts
  • Set goals for future learning

Teachers and IT staff are currently readying students in Yr 7-10 to successfully access their online assessments. If you run into any challenges or difficulties next week, please email isupport@redlands.nsw.edu.au. We have communicated with students that there may be a bump in the road, especially if wifi or internet access wavers, but this bump will be temporary and fixable. These assessments are just another learning experience – it’s important to exert effort but also to maintain perspective.

Below is an infographic designed to support students. We appreciate you unpacking this with your Yr 7-10 child.

University and Careers

Our University and Careers Advisors, Ms Clare Hurst and Justine Fowler have been enjoying supporting our students since they joined Redlands at the start of Term 3.

Last term they met with over 60 students via Zoom

56 Yr 12 students

3 Yr 11 students

1 Yr 10 student

47 requests for transcripts and references for Yr 12 students

50 early university offers for 2021 Yr 12 students

They are currently preparing an exciting Work Exploration program for our Yr 10 students to engage with this term, and also thrilled about getting to know our 2022 Year 12 students, via meetings, and programs designed to support their transition post-school.

International School Library Month

Our School librarians are so ready to celebrate International School Library Month with students when they return to On-Campus Learning. You can find their latest article here.

Canteen – all food, drink and snacks to be purchased online from 25 October 2021

When students return to campus they will be required to order all food and drink via our online ordering system, Flexischools. Many students already confidently use this system, but prior to this lockdown, we still permitted students to enter the canteen and purchase food, drinks and snacks. From Monday 25 October all students (and staff) will only use the online ordering system to make canteen purchases. It’s so easy, it’s more sustainable and our wonderful canteen staff have built an efficient order collection system which will make the process faster, and safer. Please ensure familiarity with this Online ordering via Flexischools system, so that if your child wishes to purchase from the canteen, they have access. Our students on the Junior Campus already use this system and if they can do it, so can we!

Visual Arts

Redlands IB Visual Arts 2021 Exhibition Virtual Tour

After almost two years of artmaking, the efforts of the Year 12 IB class are now available for all to see. There is a wonderful mix of styles, media and concepts explored, which provide us, the audience, with an insight into how the class of 2021 see their world and how they interpret their place in it. As you will see in all 12 exhibitions, the students have reflected on and responded to their world and have used the visual arts as a means to voice their stories and to visualise their emotions.

We have created a Virtual Tour of the Exhibition, which can be viewed by clicking on the image or the text link. When the Virtual Tour page loads, you can ‘walk through’ at your leisure by clicking the Explore 3D Spaces Icon in the bottom left of the screen or you can auto play the tour, which will walk you through all student exhibitions.

Each student has their own exhibition space within the Tour. For a deeper understanding of each student’s work, they have provided a video overview of their Curatorial Rationale. This can be accessed by hovering your cursor over the green and white disc in each exhibition space. Video or interactive works will auto play through the tour and can also be accessed via the clickable discs located near each work.

I hope you enjoy the 2021 IB Visual Arts Exhibition Virtual Tour.

The anticipation is palpable! Like the runners in the blocks waiting for the starter’s gun, the whole of NSW is, metaphorically, holding their breath anticipating the relaxing of restrictions. This anticipation has hope based in certainty, as the tally of double vaccinations inevitably increases reaching the magic number. This anticipation has joy at the reality of hugging a grandchild, eating with friends, haircuts, nail salons, gym, sport and shopping. This anticipation makes us impatient but it also enables us to stay the course and live appropriately as we approach that day.

This anticipation is so much like the Christian anticipation of the return of Jesus. The anticipation is full of hope. The certainty of Jesus’ words that he will return, that he has prepared a place for us in his heavenly kingdom and that on his return we would be raised up with him. This hope is secured by the historical event of his death and resurrection making this hope, not a vague wish but a certainty.

The anticipation is full of joy as the heavenly kingdom is a new earth where evil, sin, tears, death, sickness and pain are things only of the past. They have been replaced by love, glory and unity of people from every nation, tribe and language bound together in the presence of loving God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

This anticipation helps us to stay the course and live appropriately now. The anticipation of the return of Christ compels us to encourage one another to love well, to do good, to honour Jesus and to encourage others to embrace this future. This glorious future means we live sacrificially, humbly with good ethics and morals, seeking the good of others by serving them.

So let me encourage you today to embrace this future, embrace the gift of salvation from Jesus offered to all but must be accepted by repenting and believing. It is true that God loves everyone and Jesus died for everyone but we need to grasp this gift for ourself.

There are some interesting parallels here with the vaccination program. It is offered to all, but each one must take hold of it by rolling up their sleeve. When one does it opens the door of possibilities. Likewise, the gift of Jesus is held out to each of us. When we repent and believe, it means we will join in the anticipation of the better future of his heavenly kingdom.

Prayer meeting

There will be a Redlands Community prayer meeting on the Thursday, 29 October, at 7.30 pm. This is a time to gather and pray for God’s blessing on our students (especially year 12) and community. At present it is unclear whether this will be in person or as a zoom but please mark it in your diary, specific details will follow.

May the Blessing of God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit keep your hearts and minds in his love.

International School Library Month 2021

October is International School Library Month. This year’s theme is Fairy Tales and Folk Tales around the World.

Once upon a time. . .” immediately takes us all to the magical world of books, through which we get a sneak peek into the lives of fairies, goblins, pixies and more. These stories were originally oral tales worn smooth by many tongues and passed down through generations. They teach us about human values and culture and many are cautionary tales.  They let us connect the world and its many cultures through the medium of story.

“Once upon a time ………….”  What magic that phrase conjures. These classic tales “tell children what they unconsciously know – that human nature is not innately good, that conflict is real and that life is harsh before it is happy – and thereby reassure them about their own fears and their own sense of self.” Arthur Schlesinger Jr.

Added to this is the memory children have of sharing these stories with a loved adult  so these tales, while “terrible” have a layer of warmth, comfort and  safety attached.

Bruno Bettelheim, in The Uses of Enchantment , explored these tales concluding that struggles in life are unavoidable but these tales teach children (and us )  that despite unjust hardships, steadfast struggles against them ensure a victorious outcome. These stories, still relevant to us today , are continually being transformed.

Maria Tatar, folklorist, scholar and editor of Classic Fairy Tales  ( 398.2/ANN) has just published a new book. The Heroine with a 1001 Faces.  ( 15th October 2021) This is a pandemic book, written against backdrop of a silent world. A world where we discover new forms of heroism in the quiet heroism of doctors and nurses. This book looks at the heroine’s quest. Maria challenges the models of heroism in Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With a Thousand  Faces.  On writing her book Maria says:

“It was such an adventure for me at a time that was so dark for everybody,” she said. “It was also during the long winter nights at the height of the pandemic. It kept me alive. This is what stories do, after all.” https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/22/books/maria-tatar-heroine-with-1001-faces.html

Curiosity, in these tales, is a badge of honour, not a mark of shame. From Eve and Pandora through Bluebeard’s Wife (Do we ever learn her name? ) and Shererazade to Nancy Drew, Hermione Granger, Katniss Everdeen, these girls are on their own quests. Quests that require courage, defiance and care.

In a world that requires a courageous response these fairy tales still resonate with us and are continually transformed to bring us courage. Keep reading. It is a real source of comfort and inspiration in these times.

We look forward to seeing all our students at the end of October. The Roseby Library is waiting for you.

Year 10

Year 10 Assessment Week

As mentioned in last week’s Note Day, the Yr 10 Assessment Week will be taking place next week during Week 3, remotely. Yr 10 will access all of their modified assessments via their subject course iLearn page. Students will be required to logon to the zoom, at least 15 minutes before the assessment begins to ensure they can access all the relevant information required for them to complete the assessment.

This week during Tutor Time, there has been an emphasis on how to manage assessment stress and anxiousness, along with strategies to assist with assessment preparation.

Yr 10 will not be required to attend any formal lessons during the week and can use their downtime to study or have a refreshing break to switch off from an exam and start focusing on the next exam.

Best of luck to all of Yr 10 as they prepare for next week’s assessments.

The Year 10 Assessment Schedule can be accessed here

Useful Study Tools

Below are some useful study tools which students reviewed and explored during Tutor Time.

  • Quizlet: Make your own flashcards online using Quizlet .
  • Mindmap: Make your mind maps online.
  • BBC Brain Smart: Need a quick study break? Why not stay productive and wake up your brain by playing a game from BBC Brain Smart . There are fun games to help you boost your memory, remember chains of numbers, get motivated and manage stress. And all without feeling like you are doing any real work (we promise)…
  • Flora: Are you finding that you’re struggling to focus on studying from home? Can’t help but dive into the ultimate distraction: picking up your phone? It sounds like you need a little Flora in your life. Flora  is a free app that helps you to manage your screen time via a virtual garden.

  • MindfulnessSmiling Mind (Links to an external site.) is a mindfulness meditation app which has programs to help you manage your stress, anxiety and depression

Break times, Balance and Relaxation

Taking regular breaks, exercising, making time for friends and doing the things students love are useful ways for Year 10 to maintain motivation and manage exam stress. These activities help you clear their mind allow students to return to their study feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Last Friday, all 10 IST Students attended the remote Digi Ed Day which was a day dedicated to students learning about claymation along with students directing, filming and producing their own claymation from home using clay, found objects, their smartphones and stop motion software. 10 IST students had to design the characters for their claymation out of clay and then design a stop animation 15 – 30 second TVC based upon either a charity, covid safety, or encouraging NSW to receive a covid vaccination. Below are some pictures from the scenes of some of the students claymation TVC along with all of the IST students holding onto their clay characters. On our return to On-Campus Learning in Week 4, some of the best students’ work in each IST class will be displayed on the big screen at a Year Assembly.

Year 9

Week 4 Year 9 Return to School and Term 4 Assessment Block

Parents and students received communication this week regarding an updated plan for return to On-Campus Learning and Term 4 Assessments.  The new plan for Week 4 incorporates two days for welcoming students back to campus and allowing time for connection and confidence building after a long time away from peers, teachers and the face-to-face school environment.  Three days then follow with timetabled remote Term 4 Assessments.  Each assessment is scheduled with time between for rest, stretch or further study for students.  Students will be completing these assessments from home.

  • Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 October – return to the Senior Campus for Connection and Confidence Days
  • Wednesday 27 to Friday 29 October – remain at home for scheduled online Term 4 Assessment Block

More information will be coming to parents and students outlining further details of the Yr 9 Connection and Confidence days on 25 & 26 October.  An overview is included below, summarised from Mrs Van de Peer’s communication earlier this week.

The timetable for Yr 9 Week 4 is linked in Redlands Pulse for parents and in iLearn Pastoral Page for students.

On Campus Connection and Confidence Days: Monday 25 October and Tuesday 26 October

We want all of our students to enjoy the opportunity of returning to On-Campus Learning on 25 October. There will be a dual focus on these days.

Firstly, we will prioritise reuniting friends and peers, checking-in on students’ wellbeing and fortifying coping strategies so that students can successfully navigate the changes associated with returning to On-Campus Learning. An extended Tutor Session on Monday 25 October will facilitate this focus.

Secondly, students will attend face-to-face lessons, enabling them to catch-up with their teachers, who can reassuringly respond to any last-minute questions or concerns in person, engendering confidence prior to the Assessment Block.

When Yr 9 returns to On-Campus Learning, things will look and feel different because we need to meet the COVID-19 Safe guidelines mandated by the NSW Government. Students will have to wear masks, adhere to staggered lesson and break times and also purchase all food through the canteen via an online ordering system. We will communicate these protocols with you ahead of Monday 25 October.

At Home Online Assessment Block: Wednesday 27 October to Friday 29 October

We want all of our students to engage in the planned Assessment Block. These assessments have been modified to most appropriately enable them to demonstrate the learning and skills they have developed over the past term. The assessments are being facilitated via iLearn, a platform familiar and accessible to all students.

During the Assessment Block, students only log in to sit their assessments. They do not attend formal lessons during the Block, and they do not follow the Remote Learning Timetable.

When students are not sitting an assessment task, they should be:
– Having a break, relaxing and being active
– Revising for another assessment task
– Reflecting on how they managed a task and identifying positive strategies to take into the next task

Pastoral Care

Each week, students are engaging in multiple social awareness activities through Zoom in Tutor and their classes.  Specifically, on Mondays, Tutor classes are running various weekly activities to encourage connection while learning remotely.  This week, we thank several student leaders who have volunteered to lead a class “Who am I” challenge with the help of Ms Alyssha Clarke.

Sport

The Sport Department continues to organise and offer several exciting opportunities for our students to engage in fitness and their own specific Sport while learning remotely. Students should check the Sport iLearn page weekly for further information regarding Sport sessions.

This week, students are choosing between the following activities for their Thursday Sport session: Zoom Pilates, “I’m so Electro” Zoom Fitness and Strava Challenge Run, Walk or Cycle.  There are further sport specific options on the iLearn Sport page.

Assessment Block – Modification

Parents of students in Yr 8 & 9 would have received a recent communication regarding the further modified Assessment Block for Term 4.

In order to enable the students to return to On-Campus Learning on Monday 25 October and also to engage in the planned Assessment Block, the following amendments have been made for all Yr 8 and 9 students:

  • Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 October – return to the Senior Campus for Connection and Confidence Days
  • Wednesday 27 to Friday 29 October – remain at home for scheduled online Assessment Block

We believe the modification will provide students with a meaningful assessment experience, and one that supports them to:

  • Prepare for an assessment task ahead of time, utilising organisation and revision skills
  • Undergo a range of tasks – students will be asked to complete quizzes, tests and assignments
  • Experience a managed sense of pressure, utilising emotional self-management skills
  • Receive feedback on their achievement and growth
  • Set goals for future learning

On Campus Connection and Confidence Days: Monday 25 October and Tuesday 26 October

We want all of our students to enjoy the opportunity of returning to On-Campus Learning on 25 October. There will be a dual focus on these days.

These assessments have been modified to most appropriately enable them to demonstrate the learning and skills they have developed over the past term. The assessments are being facilitated via iLearn, a platform familiar and accessible to all students.

The Assessment Block has been modified so that it fits into this week, offering a maximum of three short assessments per day, for each student. Merging the assessment schedule gives us greater flexibility and allows us to return the students to face-to-face learning in the following week.

Students will have to wear masks, adhere to staggered lesson and break times and also purchase all food through the canteen via an online ordering system. We will communicate these protocols with you ahead of Monday 25 October.

Yr 8 Visual Arts

Yr 8 Visual Arts students have been very engaged throughout Remote Learning in their exploration of portraiture. After completing investigations into representations of the human form, students considered how they wanted to portray themselves in acrylic paint. With the delivery of canvas and paints to every house, Yr 8 study areas quickly morphed into artist studios, as each student began to create a life-sized self-portrait. As you can see from these in progress photos and zoom lessons, there are some very exciting self-portraits being produced. It will be fantastic to see them all completed and together when we return to campus.

Term 4 Events

After the Assessment Block, the students will participate in a variety of curricular and cocurricular activities designed to engage and extend them in the closing weeks of the school year. Initially, they will receive feedback for their assessments, reflect on their achievements and disappointments and then set future goals. The goal setting will take place with their Tutor and be communicated to parents.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths)

In November Year 8 students will engage in a STEAM Day developed to engage and extend their skills and learner attributes.

BURN BRIGHT – Leadership Starts from Within

Yr 8 will engage in a day-long program to support their self-development and personal leadership.

Yr 7 Assessment Block (Week 3)

During the Assessment Block, students only log in to sit their assessments. They do not attend formal lessons during the Block, and they do not follow the Remote Learning Timetable. Instead, they follow the Online Assessment Timetable, emailed to parents earlier this week. Students have a maximum of two assessments per day; one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

When students are not sitting an assessment task, they should be:
– Having a break, relaxing and being active
– Revising for another assessment task
– Reflecting on how they managed a task and identifying positive strategies to take into the next task

Redlands School TV – Exam Jitters

“Balance is key when it comes to getting the most out of the brain. Students need to take responsibility for when to study and when to socialise.” – Dr Michael Carr-Gregg.

Setting a schedule is vitally important. Students need to schedule everything from sleeping and eating, to studying and exercising. It is one of the best ways to manage inevitable exam stress. Students need to look after themselves when they have big demands in their life.

When it comes to productive study, sometimes less is often more. It is recommended that students hit the books in 50-minute stints, broken up by 15-minute breaks. This gives the brain, and body, a rest. Adolescents will often underestimate the amount of sleep they need. Getting enough sleep is key to successful study practices.

Research shows that physical activity also has a very positive impact on mental wellbeing. Eating well is another crucial factor to maintaining concentration and staying focussed on the task ahead.

Just a Few More Sleeps!

The countdown is on for return to On-Campus Learning where we will once again hear laughter and chatter in our classrooms and playgrounds. Mrs Clinton and I spent time with our Redlands House students this week and we were able to participate in their morning ritual which is always a special event. This is how our Redlands House staff and children greet each other every day after they sing a lovely song together:

Here is the land
Here is the sky
Here are my friends
and here am I
Warami  wellamabami
Welcome from wherever you come from.

I reflected on the importance that welcoming each other to the day means and how we need to ensure, as we return to On-Campus Learning, that we all take the time to stop, look each other in the eye and really listen when we ask ‘hi, how are you?’ to our friends. I know the students will be desperate to see friends and teachers, but we are also desperate to feel connected to each other again.

As we return, the students may be full of excitement, but some may also be feeling a little nervous or worried. Here are some little tips from our new Counsellor, Rachel Clark to think about and use at home over the next few days.

This week during Assembly and Circle Time we discussed what the return to On-Campus Learning will look like and the importance for looking out for one another. While there’s lots of excitement in the air, for some there may be some worries too. Here are 5 tips for preparing your child for Return to On-Campus Learning:

  1. Discuss things openly and regularly check in with your child about how they are feeling. For example “How do you feel about going back school?

Some Last Minute Details to Remember

I hope that you have read the back to school information that was sent to all Prep families on Wednesday afternoon. Please don’t hesitate to email me with any last minute queries around the Kindergarten and Year 1 return on Monday 18 October or for Year 2 on 25 October.

Junior Sport

Week 2

There certainly is excitement building in the air with the prospect of students returning on site in two weeks’ time. And while inter-school sport will not take place this term under our IPSHA and HICES pathway there are some exciting plans taking place behind the scenes for sport. We are looking at celebrating our return of our Junior School students to site while allowing them to reconnect with their peers through a variety of sign-up events, details of which will be released soon. All of this of course has to be done within the guidelines of the current NSW Level 3 guidelines.

Sport and House Captains

The Junior Sport Department and Sport/House Captains wanted to say a big thank you for your child’s efforts last term with Redlands Homefit sessions. To celebrate making it through the term we came together to create a fun lip syncing video with staff, coaches and sports/house captains to an 80s classic by Whitney Houston. We hope it brings a smile to your face as you start to prepare to return to the Junior School.

Music

Thank You for the Music Yr 12!

As our Yr 12 students celebrate the closing of a chapter today and the imminent dawning of another, the Music Department would like to wish the graduating class every good thing for the road ahead. Pleasingly, many of our students dream of Music as a central part of their lives from here, with some already offered coveted early entry places to the USYD Conservatorium of Music. Whatever lies ahead, we hope that all that the seeds you have sown in your Music studies over the years will see you reap a lifelong harvest of musical fulfilment.

Fond memories remain for us of the Yr 12 ABBA finale at this year’s Senior Music Festival. Thank you for the Music!

Staggered Return to Campus

We thank you, our community for your flexibility and patience as we’ve navigated the current restrictions to map our safe return back to ‘on campus’ learning in the coming weeks. As you know, the Government roadmap sees students returning to campus as follows:

Week 3 (from Monday 18 October 2021) – Kindergarten, Yr 1 and Yr 12
Week 4 (from Monday 25 October 2021) – All other Year Groups

The Music Department has worked closely with the Redlands Executive with respect to implementing the Department of Education’s restrictions that will be in place at the time of our return to campus. We assure you that the safety and wellbeing of our community is our highest priority. In light of growing community vaccination rates, low community transmission within our LGA and easing community restrictions, the following parameters will guide our thoughtful return to face-to-face lessons in the Music Department.

Piano & Instrumental Tuition

As of Week 3 2021, Piano and Instrumental Tutors are able to return to site to teach ‘face-to-face’ so long as:

    • they are comfortable doing so;
    • they are double-vaccinated;
    • they wear face masks;
    • a minimum of 1.5m distancing is observed at all times;
    • rooms and shared resources are cleaned frequently;
    • students and families are comfortable participating in face-to-face lessons.

Vocal Tuition

Vocal Tutors are regrettably unable to teach on site until restrictions are amended. Singing is currently explicitly stated as a banned activity in schools, except for assessment purposes. Singing lessons can only occur if both tutor and student are zooming from their respective homes (before and after school hours if feasible) until the restrictions allow otherwise. We understand the challenge this presents, and if lessons are untenable under these restrictions, families will be rebated for lessons not received this semester.

Musicianship Classes, Rock Bands, and Cocurricular Ensembles

Classes and cocurricular rehearsals with singers or mixed year groups are likely to continue ‘online’ until outdoor rehearsals are permitted (or until the restrictions ease). Rehearsal times may be adjusted to allow for commute to or from home in time for a scheduled Zoom session.  Your tutor or ensemble conductor will communicate with you directly about this in due course.

(Image above: Our wonderful Music Team are looking forward to safely resuming lessons soon. Though they will have face masks on, you can only imagine the huge smiles behind them!)

Senior Instrumental Competition – Monday 22 November 2021

Though there are still some moving parts, we have taken the liberty of pencilling in a revised date for the postponed Senior Instrumental Competition.  If restrictions are prohibitive of a live performance on this new date, we will move to a video upload format for this event too – if only to bring a sense of closure for our talented finalists (including those from our graduating class) who have worked hard for this accolade.

It is our hope to be able to go ahead with a live performance under a strict Covid Risk management plan – commencing at 4pm and though closed to an audience, live-streamed.

We look forward to hearing the musical offerings of our 2021 finalists:

Congratulations

Congratulations once again to the 70+ students in total (and their film crew families!) who completed their AMEB Examinations via video upload in the past week. Before we even receive our results, the resilience and adaptability of these musicians in 2021 receives our effort grade of ‘highly commended’! Well done!

Students keen for musical outlet have also been participating in local eisteddfods online in the past weeks. We commend Yr 5 student, Eloise To, who received third place in the 10U Woodwind Solo section in the City of Ryde Eisteddfod this week.

Keep Up to Date!

Thank you for reading our Music Note Day! As you know, this – alongside Pulse, is one of our main means of communication with our community. Reach out if there is anything you’d like to hear more about in our weekly notices!

As a further arm of support, throughout the week, if you have any questions at all about Music learning (Curricular, Extracurricular & Cocurricular streams) at Redlands, we welcome you to reach out to our Administration Team who will be happy to assist with or direct your enquiries.

See You Soon!

We are so looking forward to seeing our students in person again soon.
