Issue 31 2019 - 17 Oct 2019

From the Principal

Welcome back to all students and families and a very warm welcome to the new families who have joined our Redlands community from local schools, India and the Netherlands.

There has been significant progress on the construction of our New Learning Hub over the past few months. Internal partitions are now being installed in all four levels, along with the installation of windows on Level 2, as depicted in the following photographs.

The project is on track for the New Learning Hub to be ready for classes from the commencement of Term 3 next year.

If you have any questions about our redevelopment project, please email masterplan@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

There was a lot of work done during the two week vacation, not only on the major building site.

Also many of our Year 12 students took advantage of having the Library open for them to come and study together as they prepare for their exams, with the HSC having started today. Teachers and Library staff were helping with marking practice essays and collaboration among the students was also very evident as they shared knowledge and understanding. Next week will be the final attendance week for our IB students before they make final preparations for their examinations.

This week our Year 11 students have been enjoying their final School Camp at our High Country Campus. A theme at this Camp is the leadership which we want all our Seniors to show in their final year of school which sets a strong example to the younger students and builds a positive, productive and supportive school culture.

Parents and carers should have this week received a link to the Perspectives Survey and we thank those of you who have already submitted your responses. I encourage all families to respond to this survey. It is the first time Redlands has run such a survey across the entire school, and your responses will provide valuable feedback for us about Redlands, and provide useful data to help inform our future direction. If you have any questions or difficulties please contact our Deputy Principal, Sarah McGarry. This survey will remain open for responses until next Friday 25 October.

Summer Sports competitions commence this weekend and I wish all teams a happy and successful season.

Foundation

A very warm welcome to Term 4! We trust all our Redlands families had a wonderful break and are recharged for our final term for 2019. Thank you to all our families who have made contributions to one of our tax deductible funds. Every contribution matters.

Legacy Gift of Class of 2019

Thank you to our Redlands community and the Yr 12 Legacy Gift team in particular who demonstrated incredible compassion and courage to lead the way in raising funds for the Legacy Gift, sharing these values with younger students through a number of fundraising initiatives conducted during their final year.

“Being a part of the Yr 12 Legacy Gift fundraising efforts provided me with an opportunity to work towards a common goal of contributing to another person’s Redlands education through a scholarship. Our fundraising initiatives united our Year Group and the wider school community, raising awareness of the gift of giving.” Legacy Gift team member, Class of 2019.

At the Valedictory dinner Glenda McLoughlin, Chair of Redlands Board, and Dr Lennox both acknowledged all the efforts made towards this common goal. Dr Lennox talked about the importance of diversity among the student body and praised the Yr 12 cohort for starting an important legacy.

“A legacy is a gift that is left to others who follow. Another legacy has become an established part of the culture of the Redlands of today, coming again from the students.” Dr Peter Lennox, Principal

Head of Secondary School

Term 4 Welcome

I hope all Redlands families were able to spend some quality family time over the recent school holidays and that the students had a refreshing and relaxing break. I am sure for many of them (and you), it is hard to believe that we are commencing our final term of the school year and are on the home stretch for 2019. Before you know it, the summer holidays will be upon us. Therefore, it is important that students quickly focus and prepare for the term ahead so that each of them can get the most out of the final two months of the school year.

Class of 2019

While we officially bid a fond farewell to the Class of 2019 at the end of last term, it was wonderful to see many of them (on some days up to fifty students) using our HSC and IB Examination extra support programs at School to study in the Library or to complete practice examinations over the recent holidays in preparation for their upcoming final examinations. We wish the students all the best with the commencement of the HSC examinations on today and the IB examinations at the beginning of Week 3.

As mentioned in my letter to parents in the holidays, it is important to note that we at Redlands are very proud to be one of a handful of schools in Sydney to offer both the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma for our senior students and are also very proud of the successful results our students achieve in both examinations. With this in mind, it is important to remember that publications such as the Sydney Morning Herald, which offer comparison tables of schools’ results in mid-December, are only comparing HSC results and do not take into consideration the IB results which are not known until early January. Redlands prides itself on its non-selective enrolment policy and while the ATAR is one measurement of a student’s success at school, we take equal pride in the myriad of other successes and contributions our students achieve whether they be academic, cocurricular, pastoral, social, or through service and leadership initiatives. It is wonderful to see so many students continue to achieve their own personal bests and to “Let Their Light Shine” both at Redlands and beyond.

Updated Canteen Payments Options

In support of our aim of moving to a cashless Secondary School Canteen by the start of 2020, there will be a new option for students to pay for their Secondary School Canteen purchases commencing in Term 4. In addition to the debit card and credit card facilities already in place, students will now be able to use their Student Identification Card (currently used to borrow library books or for printing) through FlexiSchools. To utilise this option, parents should go to FlexiSchools at https://www.flexischools.com.au/ to create an account for the student and link a credit card and student number to the account. Parents will then be able to deposit money into the account and students will be able to use their Student Identification Card to pay for purchases at the Canteen. Parents will also have options such as setting a daily spend limit, creating an auto top-up and viewing all transactions. Students who have lost their Student Identification Card should go to the ICT Help Desk for support. If parents already have a FlexiSchools account for a Junior School child, they can add any Secondary School children and their student numbers to enable Canteen purchases. If parents already have a FlexiSchools account for a Secondary School child, they simply need to add their student number to enable Canteen purchases. Please note that students will still be able to use cash for purchases in the Secondary School Canteen through Term 4; however, we envision that the Canteen will be cashless from the beginning of 2020.

Revision to 2020 Term Dates

Please note there has been one revision to 2020 Term Dates.

  • Term 3 2020 will now end on Thursday 24 September (previously Friday 25 September)
  • Term 4 2020 will now commence on Monday 12 October (previously Tuesday 13 October)

The 2020 Term Dates have been updated accordingly on our website and on Redlands Pulse.

Parent iLearn Access

From this term, parents of students in Yrs 7-10 will now have the ability to view their child’s Course Information Pages on iLearn. This access will allow parents to view course outlines, assessment notifications and information and key resources for each of their child’s courses. Parents will only be able to see raw marks for assessments on iLearn and should still use Edumate to view moderated assessment results. In addition, parents will not have access to their child’s individual class pages on iLearn. We hope this access will provide even more academic information to parents moving forward. Further information can be found in a separate communication to parents of students in Yrs 7-10.

Opal Cards

2020 school travel applications are now open. Students progressing to Yrs 3 and 7 no longer need to re-apply if they are:

  • are continuing at the same school
  • are residing at the same address
  • have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply. Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails. Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019.

Chaplain

Redlands encourages students to explore the claims of Christ and the reasons for faith. As a school in the Anglican tradition we are committed to providing an accessible explanation of the Christian faith and nurture the students independent investigation of the cogency and reality of Christ. In Yr 8, students explore the historical evidence for the historical Jesus as presented in the gospels in Term 1. In Term 3 they read for themselves one of those gospels and are asked to make a creative response to it.

The Christian Studies Department has been delighted by the scope of the various creative forms and the depth of thought behind them. There were instrumental compositions, creative writing pieces, sculptures, photography, poetry, collages, pencil drawings and paintings.

Our students have not only demonstrated their artistic skills, but also deep thinking as they wrote their Artist Statements. Here they explained the issues they explored, the complexity of the identity of Jesus and how they have understood the gospel.

Sebastian Tang grappled with the dual nature of Jesus: that he appeared as a man but on the inside he is God dying for the sins of humanity. The words on the rim shows the bridge between the two natures.

Lucy Horton explored the multi-dimensional nature of Jesus that defies our classification. The common thread of the cross in each role is shown by looking through the sculpture but each plate portrayed a different aspect: teacher, healer, guide and king. She explored how each of these contributed to an understanding that Jesus is God.

Hadley Wintle called his work The Sun also Rises and explored ideas of the baptism and Jesus as the reflection of God. His careful choices in subject, exposure, time of day all captured different aspects of Jesus as portrayed in the gospel. In his own words: “The sun, being the largest and most powerful life force affecting every living creature on earth, is a metaphor for God. Additionally, the ocean, the largest body of water on Earth, is the utmost essential requirement for human survival, representing Jesus. However, the central point of these metaphors is how they mirror each other within the frame. The almost blindingly bright, almost angelic light of the sun is reflected in an equally blinding stream of golden luminosity stretching past the horizon. This reflection is a metaphor for Jesus as the mirror image of God.”

Jack Forrest explored the parable of the sower and how only the seeds that fall on healthy ground grow. He has extended this metaphor in his sculpture to show that the growth can only happen with the cross of Jesus at the centre. He has developed a deep understanding of the parable and how it connected to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

I am delighted about the fresh perspective these students and many others have grasped from a complete reading of Mark’s gospel. Notably many students wrote about how they had preconceived ideas that reading the gospel challenged or dispelled. We, as a community, can learn from our Yr 8 students. May I recommend that we each take a fresh look at the historical Jesus of the Gospel reading a complete gospel and engaging deeply with the life and words of Jesus.

Parents who Pray

This is an invitation to parents who would like to support the school community through prayer. We gather to bring before God our school: students, staff, executive, parents and board. A particular focus will be on praying for our Yr 12 students as they are face final examinations. We will gather Wednesday 23 October, in B.1.1 commencing at 8.30am and finishing at 9.15am.

Service and Social Engagement

This term in the Secondary School there will be some exciting and thought provoking activities for students to engage with.

CanTeen Bandanna Day Friday 25 October

First up we will be supporting CanTeen with Bandanna Day on Friday 25 October. Throughout Week 2 students will be selling bandannas to support CanTeen. CanTeen helps young people cope with cancer in their family. Through CanTeen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer and connect with other young people in the same boat. If they’ve been diagnosed themselves, CanTeen also provide specialist, youth-specific treatment teams. Students are encouraged to buy a new 2019 Bandanna for $5 and wear it, particularly on Friday 25 October. We will be encouraging students to buy one for everyone in the family.

Anglicare Toys and Tucker

This term we will also be kicking off our annual Anglicare collection for the Toys ‘n’ Tucker campaign. Anglicare aim to share the joy of Christmas with people in need. Throughout November we will be seeking donations in Tutor Groups for a range of items on the shopping list (see below).

It’s only through people’s generosity that Anglicare is able to provide Christmas food and gifts to thousands of families who would otherwise go without. Please take some time to look at the shopping list and pick up something to contribute when you are next at the supermarket. There is no need to wrap contributions as they are made up into tailored hampers by Anglicare.

Assistance Dogs Australia

Yr 7 will be hosting a visit from Assistance Dogs Australia in November. During Tutor Time students will continue to reflect on the valuable and positive contribution we can all make to bettering the world around us. Assistance Dogs provide canine carers; whether it’s a pet providing companionship, or an assistance dog supporting people with disabilities. Assistance Dogs Australia train and place unique dogs in unique situations. Their free-to-client assistance dogs provide independence, self-esteem, improved health and relationships to individuals and families, resulting in stronger and more successful communities.

It costs about $40,000 to train a puppy and Yr 7 will be doing some fundraising to support this training. We have also created an Everyday Hero fundraising page for digital donations.

Year 9

Welcome back to Term 4! I hope you all had a restful school holidays and enjoyed spending time with your children. It is particularly nice to welcome back the large number of students who spent Term 3 at Winter School and we are hoping for a smooth transition back into the normality of Redlands.

Term 4 is a busy one, with students being involved in a number of things, including their Yearly Examinations in Week 4, Surf Education in Week 5, and STEAM initiatives also in Week 5, amongst a number of other exciting and interesting activities. This term is also quite short, finishing with Speech Night on Wednesday 4 December. More detailed information on everything will be given closer to the time.

Most students are looking smart, and Tony and I thank you for your support in ensuring this has happened for the start of the term. Some boys have been spoken to regarding their hair and the need for it to be shorter, according to the school regulations that can be seen on page 19 of the 2019 Student Planner. In particular, some boys are preferring the longer style on top, but this means that during the school day their hair becomes very messy and in their eyes. These boys have been asked to get a haircut this weekend, and we appreciate your support in this matter.

Yearly Examinations

Notifications and study guides for the upcoming examinations in Week 4 are available for all students on the relevant subject iLearn page. The timetable has not yet been released to students but will be shortly. Tutors will ensure every student has a copy of this timetable and is aware of the date and time of each examination and the processes involved. If your child has any questions, please would you encourage them to speak to either their Tutor or Tony or me. As they are coming to the end of Yr 9, we are aiming to help them become more responsible for their schooling and take the pressure away from parents needing to be so involved, with the ultimate goal of achieving life-readiness for each student.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please watch

As students begin to prepare for the Yearly Examinations in Week 4, they are often told by people to ‘go study’, yet have very little idea as to what ‘study’ actually means. This week, Yr 12 students across NSW, of which one is my oldest son, begin their HSC Examinations, where it is hoped by now that they have understood what the concept of ‘studying’ actually means. While it is not expected for Yr 9 students to be at the same level of understanding, we are trying to help them put into place processes now that will help them in years to come and for their final HSC or IB Examinations in three years’ time. This week I have attached a short clip that we will be showing to the Year Group next week providing some tips on how to study.

Pastoral Care Program

For the first three weeks of this term students are given the resources and time to prepare for their upcoming Yearly Examinations through the use of weekly study planners and mindfulness activities.

Social Awareness Program

This term students will be working towards a fundraising event in Week 6 to support the organisation Room to Read, who focus on reducing inequality of girls’ education in developing nations around the world. Students will be raising awareness about the organisation with other Year Groups in the school, as well as helping with the planning and running of the event in Week 6.

Fiji Trip

A number of students were fortunate to attend an overseas trip to Fiji over the school holidays. They began the time along the coast line, learning the importance of marine conservation and the impact of humans on the environment. They were involved in the removal of deadly starfish which have been killing the coral throughout Fiji. In the second half of the trip they moved to the highlands where they lived with a local community, being embraced by the families in the village. While staying there, they learnt about the culture as well as helping to extend the village’s community hall to make it large enough for their needs. This trip was a rewarding and challenging experience for the students, who left with a greater appreciation for humanity.

I hope you have a great week!

Week 8

Wednesday 4 December

Welcome to Term 4! We have a busy term ahead of us. This week, students met one-on-one with their Tutor to reflect on progress through Term 3 and set goals for Term 4. This term will be filled with examinations, Service opportunities and tasks which encourage students to develop helpful thinking patterns.

This term we welcome Alannah Gill into the Yr 8 cohort. We welcome back Sienna Wessels and Grace Matthews from Winter School. Temporarily, we farewell Julia Murphy who is heading to Japan for the next 12 months.

Examinations

In preparation for examinations in Week 4, students will be using Pastoral Care time as an opportunity for personal study. It is important that they schedule this time into their study routines and plan accordingly. Students have been encouraged to speak openly with their teachers about examination content and preparation. Should you have any questions, please contact the relevant teacher or Subject Coordinator directly.

The message we’re sending Yr 8 is that whilst exams are important, they are not the only source of subject assessment. Nerves are expected (and also useful) yet, no student should be losing sleep. Students should use the upcoming exams as an opportunity to track progress and gain an understanding of how examination sessions work in the Secondary School.

The Raising Children Network and the Study Skills Handbook have a wealth of useful information about exam preparation and managing any worries.

The Redlands Home Learning guidelines can be found on page 16 of the Student Planner.

SRC Leadership and Environmental Sustainability Expo

Representatives from the SRC and the Redlands Environmental Club attended an Expo at the Sydney Observatory to hear expert speakers address students from all over Sydney. Students took part in a workshop, as well as presenting to primary school students to help inspire and educate them in sustainability and to become more environmentally aware in their daily lives. The following Yr 8 students attended on behalf of Redlands:

  • Sabrina Blasco – SRC
  • Lucy Horton – Environmental Club representative
  • Alyssa Tinetti – SRC
  • Erin Tyrrell – Environmental Club representative
  • Harry Wilkes – Environmental Club representative
Redlands Debating

Well done to Lucy Horton who also was awarded the Yr 8 Most Valued Player 2019 in the School Debating Network (SDN) Competition for the second year in a row. Congratulations to Daniel Close and Claudia Lalich who were the shared recipients of the SDN Junior Trophy.

Year 7

Welcome back for the final stretch in Term 4.  With the buzz around school on Monday, students seem energised and ready to “run through the finish line” with strength and enthusiasm to celebrate the completion of this Yr 7 year.

While students need to focus on consolidation of learning, revision and preparation for the Yearly Examinations in Weeks 2 and 3, Week 4 begins with Surf Life Saving, building awareness for and collecting money for Guide Dogs Australia, raising money and collecting donation items for Toys and Tucker, giving back to our community through service and continuing to learn and grow as individuals through the end of term. Several students are very excited about being leaders in these initiatives and sharing their passions with their peers.

Reminders
  • Lockers and missing items – we appreciate your support in reminding students to always lock their personal belongings in their locker with a working lock. Many students are leaving belongings in Liggins Quad and, inadvertently, items are being picked up by other students. It is important we manage and take responsibility for our own items. Please have names written on your children’s items and encourage them to check they have the correct items at home. Thank you for your support.
  • Assessment Notifications – this is a reminder that all Assessment Notifications are released to parents and students at least two weeks prior to the due date.  Students are alerted of these notifications through iLearn and parents are able to access them in the Parent Portal.

Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills: Managing anxious feelings and stress during exams

If your child is someone who freezes or has a mental blank during an exam or is overly anxious you may find that the heightened anxiety is reducing their ability to recall.

Remember that being as prepared as possible and not leaving studying until the last minute can make a big difference in reducing anxiety.  Support your child in studying early and make a plan so that your child has time to study what is needed. It is also important to note that the more practice tests that are completed, the more familiar your child will be with the test so it will be less intimidating and your child will be used to working under time limits.

For your child during an exam: If you feel anxious, a good strategy is to close your eyes for a moment and take some long, deep breaths. When you open your eyes do some of the questions you find easy or feel confident about. Meanwhile your subconscious will have a chance to recall the things you are struggling to remember. Another trick is try moving your eyes to different directions, ie. looking up and to the left etc. This can also sometimes prompt recall.

You could also seek help from a counsellor for techniques on how to manage stress. You can also visit the Managing Stress unit for more strategies.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for the Junior School are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.

Welcome Back to Term 4

It has been a joy to welcome the students back for the start of Term 4 and begin the countdown towards the end of the academic year. As I mentioned to students in our first assembly, there is still much for them to achieve and our aim is for them to finish the year on an upward trajectory. Connected to this, I asked them to focus on four things, in particular:

  • Bringing a positive attitude to school each day
  • Putting in 100% effort in all that they do
  • Having a growth mindset in all that they experience
  • Being kind to each other and themselves

Combined, I have no doubt that these traits will result in each student finishing the year strongly and the teachers and I look forward to playing our roles in supporting the students.

Yr 5 Bathurst Excursion

Yr 5 wasted no time heading out on Tuesday in search of gold as part of their Units of Inquiry topic. The Bathurst Goldfields was the destination for their overnight visit and this opportunity to experience the goldfields will serve as an important part of their study of this significant era in Australian history. My thanks are extended to Mrs Benneyworth for his organisation of the trip and to the team of Yr 5 teachers and Mrs Parton for accompanying them on this experiential learning opportunity.

Volunteer Appreciation Evening

Tonight, I am looking forward to joining  Senior Executive staff, Board Directors and Junior School teachers at our annual School Thank You to our many parent volunteers, whose positive contributions make such an important difference to our school community.

The voluntary roles that so many of our parents play, particularly as Junior School Class Parent representatives, has a significant role in fostering and strengthening the palpable sense of school community that embodies Redlands. As well as our class parents, I also thank the many parents who have also volunteered time and contributed expertise in helping to provide support for students’ learning in both curriculum and extra curricular opportunities over the course of the year.

My sincere appreciation is extended to all of these parents and our Redlands Parents and Friends Association for both their dedication and service to our community; it truly makes a difference.

Outdoor Furniture – RPFA Thank You

Over the break, a significant amount of outdoor furniture for students was installed by our Facilities team on the Junior Campus. These items were generously donated by the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) from funds raised at events such as the Spring Fair and have already been enjoyed by our students. On behalf of the students, I add my gratitude to the RPFA for their donation and support of our School.

iPad Spot Checks – Message Function

In line with our ICT Responsible User Guidelines, specifically our supervision and monitoring responsibilities, we routinely conduct spot checks of student iPads. This has been previously communicated to families in Note Day and is part of regular communication to students.

As part of our ICT induction, students are advised that iMessages are to be turned off while they are here at school. Our teachers, ICT and eLearning team regularly remind students to switch off the iMessage function to avoid possible interruptions to learning.

In response to some parent feedback for guidance, below is a short summary explaining how to turn off iMessages on an iPad. Your support with this is appreciated in our partnership of guiding our children’s responsible usage at school.

  1. Go to the Settings App.
  2. Scroll down to the Messages App.
  3. In Messages, slide the iMessage button to the off position.
  4. The iMessage button will show as white when it is not on.
  5. The iMessage button will show as green if on.

There is also an option to disable the iMessage feature on the iPad using parental controls. Click here for further information, including parental controls for phones, or come and see our friendly ICT Helpdesk near Reception for guidance.

Please also be reminded that if you do need to contact your child during school hours, you should call Reception on 9953 6022.

TEDx Talk Opportunity

Further to the information presented to students and families last term, this is a reminder  of a unique and exciting opportunity for our Junior School students to take part in.

In her role as a speaker coach, Junior School parent, Kat Collins, has been fortunate enough to work with various TEDx events over many years. At the moment she is currently helping with one that will take place in February 2020 called TEDxBlighStreet. Kat and her team are currently curating the speaker list and with the theme of Interconnection, they thought it would be excellent to be able to involve the younger generation in some way.

Whilst not having to present a full TED talk, our Junior School students have been asked to consider submitting a one minute video which will be interspersed between the speakers under the theme of Interconnection.

The opportunity has already sparked a lot of excited conversation amongst the students and the key information for students and parents is below for your reference too. At least one Redlands Junior School video will be showcased at this event, which is very exciting for the School and more importantly, the students.

Key Information

  • One minute video
  • Theme of Interconnection
  • Students can produce individually, as a pair, small group or as a class
  • Submissions are due no later than 4pm next Friday 25 October (Week 2, Term 4) on a USB to Junior School Reception
  • A panel of our teachers will shortlist up to 10 videos which will then be sent to Kat Collins and her team at TEDx to select from.

Car Line Reminders

Thank you for your continued consideration of the safety of our community when using the Prep Car Line. Please adhere to the following reminders.

  • Please refrain from lining up or parking in the driveway before the teacher on duty arrives. If there is no teacher on duty, please drive around the block until the door to the car park is open.
  • Please do not arrive before your allocated time (see below) and park adjacent to the Preschool. This must be kept clear for the car line to flow smoothly and safely next to the curb.
  • Please keep as close to the curb as possible when lining up, to ensure cars who are not in car line can safely continue their drive on Allister Street, without having to illegally cross over double lines.
  • Preparatory School children can be collected from car line at the following times:
    • Kindergarten – 2.50pm
    • Yr 1, Yr 2 and siblings – 3.00pm
  • Junior School parents begin their line up for student collection at 3.15pm, therefore we appreciate your timeliness when collecting Prep students before this time.
Forgotten Lunches

We understand from time to time lunch is left at home due to the morning rush to school. If this happens, you have two options:

  1. Bring in your child’s lunch to the Prep Reception.
  2. Call Prep Reception and the Canteen will provide a plain sandwich and a piece of fruit.

Please refrain from calling Uber Eats to deliver fast food options. Thank you for your attention to this, as we aim to promote healthy food choices whilst at school.

Pre-Season Summer Sport Camp

For the second consecutive year selected students from our Rowing, Touch Football and Basketball programs travelled to Berry to participate in our Summer Sport Preseason Camp. With over 75 students and staff attending, the Camp provided an amazing opportunity for all athletes involved to upskill and come together as a team but also to receive focused one on one coaching from a range of our elite coaches in their respective programs.

For the rowers, the Camp was a chance to perfect their sculling technique and skill by fitting multiple trainings sessions in each day. The senior Rowing squad strengthened their team cohesion as they worked through countless kilometres of sculling every session. The strength of this cohesion and interdependence on each other is one of the key reasons our Rowing program is growing across all age groups. The week culminated in a 12km Broughton Creek time trial, a tough physical and mental challenge for any young sculler to complete.

Twenty of our top Touch Football athletes came to the Camp, a great number for one of our fastest growing sports at Redlands. Under the watchful eye of Mr Ellis, the Camp was a great chance for all of the players involved to focus on their skill development, with drills tailored around catch pass and the running elements of Touch Football. With all the trials completed and the teams selected the pressure was off this group of girls and they took to the Camp with such a strong and positive attitude.

The Redlands Basketball program had a fantastic turnout with both our Girls and Boys 1stV represented along with some selected junior players. With our experienced coaches of Ms Camino, Ms Seebohm and Mr Golding running highly focused skills sessions. All of our basketballers were able to complete a very high volume of training, adding an extra 20% training load for their season and in four short days on Camp were able to cover what would usually take 4-5 weeks during the school term. It was very encouraging to see how far this group has developed physical, mentally and socially.

One of the key focuses of the Camp is to develop the physical and mental aspects of their sports. Getting our athletes out of the Sydney ‘bubble’ and away from some of the finer things in life allows our students to really focus on their sport and what it means to be a student-athlete. All of our students worked on the finer mental aspects of their sports, whether it be the quiet one on one focused sessions for Basketball, the Stretching/Meditation sessions for Rowing or the quiet group exercises of Touch Football. These types of sessions allowed our students to reflect on what their own core values are and how they approach their sport, trainings and team mates. With the start of ISA Sport season fast approaching and our Rowing schedules already bulging at the seams, it is encouraging to know that our students have a strong training based of physical and mental skills to begin their season.

Please find a student reflection report on Redlands Pulse.

Basketball

Friends of Basketball

We will be holding the Basketball AGM on Tuesday 22 October in L1.2 from 6.00-7.00pm. We encourage any Basketball parents who would like to be a member of the 2019/20 Friends of Basketball committee to attend. All are welcome!

Pre-Season Tournaments

The 1st Boys, 1st Girls and 2nd Girls will be competing in their respective pre-season tournaments this Saturday 19 October. The details for these games are available on the Redlands Rhino (Redlands Pulse).

Round 1

Round 1 of the ISA Basketball season will commence on Saturday 26 October. A reminder all students will need to hire a Basketball singlet from the Uniform Shop prior to their first game. The draft season draw is now available on Redlands Pulse under the Basketball tab. It is important to check the Redlands Rhino each week for any changes to the schedule, the Redlands Rhino will be available on Redlands Pulse by 4.00pm each Tuesday for the upcoming Saturday games.

Rowing

During the recent school holidays our rowers had the option to continue their training, where they can both hold onto their recent gains but also further develop their boat skills. Our Junior sessions were well attended and these students were able to row in single sculls and even managed to boat an eight on occasion.

The Senior students attended the summer sport pre-season camp, or Sculling Camp as its known to our rowers. 25 Senior students completed 2-3 water sessions a day in single sculls, covering what will be their biggest training block outside of our January Rowing Camp. Students are both physically and technically challenged, with all students able to now paddle with their sculls balanced and blades off the water.

The biggest physical challenge was the newly created Head of the Broughton Creek sculling race. This is Redlands only 12km sculling time trial where the students race from where the Broughton Creek enters into the Shoalhaven River back to the Berry Sport and Rec. While all of our students will have had on water training sessions where they easily cover more than 12km, they will not have had a single workload that was for 12km and especially not in a single scull. Sent off in small groups with a coach following in a speedboat, it was effectively each student versus the clock. The top three places for both the boys and girls were as follows:

Senior Girls

Emily Barrelle (Yr 10): 59:14.48
Maddi Howard (Yr 11): 59:59.68
Emily Batemyr (Yr 10): 1:01:07.96

Senior Boys

Alex Holtheuer (Yr 10): 57:09.50
Max Durrant (Yr 11): 58:42.14
Mitch Simpson (Yr 11): 59:20.09

This week our students have returned to their full training schedule, with our Juniors commencing their first morning on water sessions. A full training schedule is available on Redlands Pulse.

Saturday 26 October will see the first of our regattas for the season, with most Seniors and all Yr 8 students racing from our home waters at the Mosman Middle Harbour Time Trial over the 5000m or 3000m course while our Senior 1st crews will head out to the NSW Institute of Sport Time Trial held on the Nepean River. We are still to determine if any of our Yr 7 students are capable of making it down the 3000m course for the time trial on Middle Harbour.

Friends of Rowing

Friends of Rowing will be meeting on Monday 21 October from 6.00-7.00pm in room H2.6. All parents and supporters are welcome to attend.

Tennis

This Saturday is the first round of the Summer NSTA Competition. The draw is now available on Redlands Pulse – Tennis. Please check the draw to ensure you turn up to the correct venue. Please arrive 15 minutes before your allocated timeslot. Just a reminder a few courtesies from players can help the day go smoothly and quickly:

  • Players should begin each set by introducing themselves and shaking hands before the toss.
  • Serving players should have two balls with them before they begin serving.
  • Players should never leave the court mid game/set for a drink. If a drink is needed, players must wait until the change of ends and take a drink walking to the other end.
  • Serving players must announce the score each point and then the game score at the end of each game.
  • All players must know the order of sets and players must be nearby ready to take the court when the previous set is finished.

If students require assistance with scoring and the rules, please approach the venue convener at each venue for their help. Please also approach the conveners for court allocation, balls and recording of scores. Good luck on Saturday.

Touch Football

The teams have now been placed on Redlands Pulse – Touch Football with the draw also. There might be some minor changes to the draw week to week, with parents and students reminded to check the Redland Rhino each Tuesday evening to confirm their weekly fixtures.

Trial matches are confirmed for this Saturday 19 October, from 10.30am (games are now on Redlands Rhino), students are reminded that they need to collect their Touch Football singlets from Mr Ellis in the Sports Department.

Volleyball

Congratulations to Sofia Stuckmann (Yr 10) who over the holidays represented the NSW U17 State Volleyball team at the Junior National Volleyball Championships in Canberra. In what was an extremely tough competition which featured some international teams, NSW had some close games and learned a lot from what was an incredible experience for all involved.

Fitness Centre

The Fitness Centre is open across all mornings during the week from 6.30am with students reminded that once on site they are required to remain on school grounds. There are additional afternoon sessions on both Monday and Friday.

The Canteen will be open for breakfast from the start of next week with a range of great options available to all students.

I recommend that all students looking ahead to their Summer Sport seasons 2019/2020 look to use these sessions as a way to prepare physically. Sports such as Basketball, Rowing, Tennis and Touch Football all require a level of strength and flexibility all of which can be achieved by using the Redlands Fitness Centre. There will again be High Performance Testing done across the next two weeks so all students are encouraged to attend.

Summer Sports Photos

Photographs for summer sports teams will be taken during school time next Wednesday. The timetable for photos will be posted in class. Rep sports team members should bring their playing uniform to change into for photos. Girls AFL and boys Spring Challenge AFL will be provided guernseys for the photo.

Basketball

Our Basketball team kick off the back end of the 2019 season this Saturday with all matches as per the original schedule on Redlands Pulse. Our teams are pretty finely balanced to ensure meaningful playing time for all players, so if you’re not available please let us know as early as possible so that replacements can be arranged.

From time to time, players may be asked to arrive early or to remain behind to play an extra game. This is at the discretion of our coaches and can be an indicator of strong performance and an opportunity to play some game time in a higher grade. Equally, it can be an opportunity for a player to enter into a lower graded game to work on a particular aspect or skill that they may have worked on in practice. It’s not essential that you stay or arrive early, but each of our coaches has a player development focus and the additional game time may well be a part of their plan.

IPSHA Basketball isn’t played for competition points or finals berths, it’s aim is to give students from similar schools the opportunity to learn, play and have fun in a healthy competition.

All players will need a numbered Basketball singlet available for purchase or hire from the Uniform Shop before matches begin. Students should also wear their Basketball singlets to practice on Wednesdays. Singlets are reversible and can be used by coaches to help determine teams for practice drills and scrimmage matches.

Before school Basketball training is available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7.15am in Dunnet Hall. Players from any grade and mixed or Girls Basketball are welcome to attend.

Girls Basketball

Teams for Girls Basketball have been emailed and posted on the Junior School Sports Noticeboard. Girls will also need to hire a uniform singlet for matches during Term 4. The draw for girls matches has been emailed and is available on Redlands Pulse.

Cricket

Our cricketers take on Barker at Barker this week with the match time pushed back to 8.00am. Coach Nick will be at Barker from 7.30am for warm up. It’s an exciting time for our cricketers who should be well matched in the 5B competition and will play host later in the season to the Junior Campus Oval’s first Cricket matches.

Tennis

Tennis rankings for this week have been finalised and our players ranked 1-8 will be playing against Scots this week at Cammeray at 8.00am (7.30am for warm up). Players ranked 9-16 have no match this week but will play intra squad matches at Cammeray Tennis Club the following Saturday from 8.00-10.00am. All info regarding rankings and matches will be emailed to players and their parents.

Term 4 Sports Schedule

The schedule for Term 4 matches is available on Redlands Pulse.
