Issue 31 2018 - 18 Oct 2018

From the Acting Principal

A warm welcome back to Term 4. We trust that you have had a restful break over the school holiday period. We especially extend a Redlands welcome to the new families who have joined our community this term from the UK and from local schools. I trust that you will feel at home at Redlands very quickly.

Next week, we look forward to welcoming Dr Lennox back from his study leave, and to hearing about the International Reunion held in London in early October, and the learnings he brings back from his ‘Cultures of Thinking’ school visits in the UK and Europe.

We wish our Year 12 students all the very best for their final examinations. Our HSC students commenced their exams today and tomorrow will be the last day of school for our IB students, with their exams starting on 29 October. We reiterate the message emphasised to all our students – you are not defined as a person by a score, or a result. Put your best foot forward in these examinations, and try to maintain perspective and balance as you navigate the next few weeks.

I am very much looking forward to this evening’s Volunteer Thank You function where we have the opportunity to thank our parent volunteers for their generous and valuable work supporting our School in so many different ways.

The funeral service for Miss Belinda Oxley, Dean of Early Childhood and Year 2 teacher, will be held on Monday 22 October at 10.30am, at Macquarie Park Northern Cemetery, Delhi Road and Plassey Road, Macquarie Park. I reiterate Mrs Fellowes’ advice to families this week; all are welcome but there is no expectation that students, particularly those in younger years, attend. We would ask all families to consider the impact that attending a funeral service may have on your child, of any age, and to make your decision about attendance accordingly.

This week, Secondary School students have had a very serious reminder that breaches of the School’s policy on drugs and alcohol will place a student’s enrolment in jeopardy.

Our Head of Secondary School, Mr Corcoran, addressed the Term 4 Commencement Assembly on Monday morning to stress that the School takes such matters very seriously and that the rules exist to provide guidance about expectations for behaviour. There is clear research that illegal drugs are harmful, and that the risks of experimentation include potential health issues and reputational/legal consequences that adolescents forget or overlook until they are confronted by reality.

This speech was not in isolation.  Our curriculum and pastoral programs educate students about the risks to their mental and physical health of various drugs, both legal and illegal. We also regularly invite expert speakers on this topic to speak to our students and our parent body, and share relevant resources through Note Day.

Despite our efforts over many years, you would be aware that at the end of last term we had an incident with Year 8 students.  We immediately took disciplinary action and suspended those involved for the few days until the end of term, with further disciplinary measures, where relevant, and an ongoing program of accountability and education around judgement and individual choices this term.

Our primary goal is to develop our young people into honest and respectful members of society, consistent with our School Values. Young people make mistakes and it is our role as educators and carers to ensure they learn the lessons.

In the past fortnight, I have had many productive conversations within our School community about how we work in partnership with parents to support our young people to grow and thrive. We continue to provide the community with numerous opportunities to engage in discussions about decision-making and we encourage parents to continue these conversations with their children so they learn and move forward.

I draw your attention to the separate communication from the Chair sent this afternoon to all parents and carers about our Senior Campus Master Plan. Please do direct any feedback to masterplan@redlands.nsw.edu.au

We wish all students, parents and staff a successful and enjoyable term ahead – at only 7.5 weeks in length, it will be action-packed with exciting learning experiences followed by the culminating celebrations in the final weeks of the academic year.

Foundation

Welcome back! We hope all our Redlands families had a wonderful break and managed to regain energy for the final term of 2018.

High Country Campus

Just before the school holidays, the Winter School final dinner took place at High Country Campus, Jindabyne to celebrate the end of the season. During this occasion, the fourth building was officially opened and named by Principal Dr Peter Lennox and Chair of Redlands Board Ms Glenda McLoughlin.

This building, which is primarily used as a Games Room, has been named after the Van Weelde Family. Mark and Tracey van Weelde are Redlands Foundation Patrons, and their three sons Nicholas, Lucas and Simon have enjoyed coming to this Campus over the past ten years during six Winter Schools and many camps.

“We wanted to give our children more access to the countryside throughout their childhood as we had growing up, so they had a wider perspective of society than an inner city life. In today’s digital global environment there seems be increased pressure on people of all ages but particularly the younger ones. We believe life-long skills need to be developed in teenage years for the journey ahead in life.” Tracey van Weelde, Redlands parent

In a today’s world, our Outdoor Education program and High Country Campus continue to be very important in the development of life skills and in helping to set our students up for long-term success.

Thank you to Mark and Tracey, and also to our Redlands families who have contributed to the HCC maintenance and repairs at the annual working bees organised by Collen Godsell (Board member and former Redlands parent),

Redlands International Reunion – London

On Saturday 6 October we celebrated the Redlands International Reunion, hosted by Caroline Jane, Alumni Manager and Redlander (1991). The elegant surroundings of the Oriental Club in Marylebone provided a perfect backdrop for this landmark event. Special thanks to all Redlanders who came from across the globe to celebrate our international community, representing every decade since 1960. Principal Dr Peter Lennox, and Mr Michael Compton (School Captain, Class of 2006) gave engaging speeches as guests reflected and celebrated our School’s history and future. We look forward to planning towards another Redlands London reunion in 2019. For further information about this special event, please contact cjane@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Head of Secondary School

Term 4 Welcome

I hope all Redlands families were able to spend some quality family time over the recent school holidays and that the students had a refreshing and relaxing break. I am sure for many of them (and you), it is hard to believe that we are commencing our final term of the school year and are on the home stretch for 2018. Before you know it, the summer holidays will be upon us. Therefore, it is important that students quickly focus and prepare for the term ahead so that each of them can get the most out of the final two months of the school year.

Class of 2018

While we officially bid a fond farewell to the Class of 2018 at the end of last term, it was wonderful to see many of them (on some days up to fifty students) using our HSC and IB Examination extra support programs at School to study in the Library or to complete practice examinations over the recent holidays in preparation for their upcoming final examinations. We wish the students all the best with the commencement of the HSC Examinations on today and the IB Examinations at the beginning of Week 3.

As mentioned in my letter to parents in the holidays, it is important to note that we at Redlands are very proud to be one of a handful of schools in Sydney to offer both the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma for our senior students and are also very proud of the successful results our students achieve in both examinations. With this in mind, it is important to remember that publications such as the Sydney Morning Herald, which offer comparison tables of schools’ results in mid-December, are only comparing HSC results and do not take into consideration the IB results which are not known until early January. Redlands prides itself on its non-selective enrolment policy and while the ATAR is one measurement of a student’s success at school, we take equal pride in the myriad of other successes and contributions our students achieve whether they be academic, co-curricular, pastoral, social, or through service and leadership initiatives. It is wonderful to see so many students continue to achieve their own personal bests and to “Let Their Light Shine” both at Redlands and beyond.

Growth Mindsets

I thought I would share with you an excerpt from my opening speech to students at this week’s assembly where I discussed the power and importance of developing a growth mindset.

“I know many of you have heard about growth mindsets vs fixed mindsets in Tutor Groups or Year Meetings over the last few years. And as you head into Term 4, with Yearly Examinations, summer sports fixtures and final concerts, I believe it is a good time to remind you of the value of having a growth mindset.

So, to illustrate the difference between a fixed and growth mindset, I thought I would share a little story with you.

There were two frogs living on a dairy farm, hopping happily all day long, chasing bugs. One day, they ventured into the barn and hopped on top of a large metal vat of fresh milk. One of the frogs, in trying to catch a bug, slipped from the edge and fell into the vat of milk. Despite all of his attempts to climb up the steep sides of the metal vat, he could not get out. The other frog, who was still sitting on the edge of the vat (and who had a fixed mindset) was crestfallen. He yelled down to his frog friend, “Oh no! There is no way out. I cannot do anything to save you. I am so sorry,” and sadly hopped out of the barn.

However, the frog who was in the vat of milk (and who fortunately had the growth mindset) decided not to give up. Despite the hopelessness of the situation, he decided to kick and swim as long as his little froggy legs would allow him.

In the morning, when the dairy farmer came into the barn, he was shocked to see that the vat of milk he had left the night before had become a vat of butter overnight, with a little green frog sitting on top of the butter, alive, but exhausted.

Now, looking past the impossibility of a frog being able to churn milk into butter, I hope this little tale does illustrate to you the power of having a growth mindset.

So, over the next few months, I encourage you to, instead of approaching things with a fixed mindset, to try and have a growth mindset.

Instead of avoiding challenges, because they make you feel like you are not talented or smart or they are just too hard, embrace challenges because they will allow you to stretch yourself and truly grow and learn.

Instead of seeing failures, setbacks and disappointments as permanent definitions of your abilities, see them as temporary obstacles to overcome.

Instead of seeing your successes as merely a result of your natural talents, see them as a result of your hard work and effort.

And learn the power of the word “yet”. For every fixed mindset phrase such as:

  • I can’t do this…
  • I’m not good at this…
  • I don’t know…
  • It doesn’t make sense…
  • This doesn’t work…
  • And I don’t get it…

Add the word “yet” to the end of each phrase to turn it into a growth mindset:

  • I can’t do this… yet
  • I’m not good at this… yet
  • I don’t know… yet
  • It doesn’t make sense… yet
  • This doesn’t work… yet
  • And I don’t get it… yet

Having this growth mindset approach will help you to have an open mind in preparation for the successes and challenges that lie ahead of you for the rest of this year and beyond.

In Memoriam

You would have received a letter from the School over the weekend notifying you of the sad news of the passing of our Dean of Early Childhood, Miss Belinda Oxley, after her battle with cancer. Miss Oxley was an inspirational teacher who touched the lives of so many students over her 23 year career at Redlands. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to her family and the staff and students of Early Childhood and the Junior School who are most affected by her passing. I know a number of Secondary School students fondly remember Miss Oxley; please encourage any students who might be distressed by this news to speak to their Tutor, Year Advisor, Counselor or other staff member if they need any support.

Miss Oxley’s funeral will be held at Macquarie Park Northern Cemetery, Delhi Rd and Plassey Rd, Macquarie Park in the Camellia Room on Monday 22 October at 10.30am. If you would like to send flowers, the family have suggested that a donation be made in honor of Belinda to the Cancer Council, in place of flower arrangements.

Term 4 Welcome

A warm welcome back to school and the start of Term 4. The playground was a buzz on Monday morning with news of holidays and students returning to Senior Campus from Winter School. It was wonderful to see our Yr 9 students reconnecting with one another.

Since Term 1, when students were last wearing summer uniform, many have grown. Yesterday students were given a one week ‘grace period’ until next Friday 26 October with regards to uniform. Please can I ask that you check your son or daughter’s hem length. Girls uniforms should reach the knee. Many boys require a haircut and for many boys, trouser hem length needs attention. Students of this age should take ownership for their appearance, this includes shining their own shoes and ironing their own uniform.

Yr 9 Yearly Examinations

The Yearly Examination Period is fast approaching, Term 4, Week 4, Monday 5 – 9 November. This year, our Yr 9 students will be given some allowances including being allowed to leave school at lunchtime four out of five days of the exam week (although not Thursday due to Sport). With such privileges also comes responsibility. Students are required to go directly home in full school uniform. Students are not to loiter, they are not to buy food, go to Woolworths or to McDonalds. Any student found not adhering to this will remain at school for the duration of the normal school day. Students also have the option of remaining at school and engaging in private study in the Roseby Library. Please could I ask for your prompt assistance by signing the online permission to permit your son or daughter’s early departure during the examination week. Online permission needs to be completed by Friday 26 October.

Furthermore, it is normal for students to feel nervous about the upcoming examinations, however if your son or daughter is feeling stressed or anxious please notify me so that we can ensure that they receive the appropriate support.

Approaches to Learning Conversations

On Monday, Tutors engaged in one on one conversations with students regarding their Term 3 Effort Grades. Please take the time to discuss these grades with your son or daughter if you have not already done so. As always strong links between home and school are vitally important and foster desirable learning outcomes. Students also spent time working on goal setting for Term 4 and engaging in revision in preparation for the exams.

CanTeen Fundraiser- Bandanna Day

This year’s CanTeen Bandanna Day will be held on Friday 26 October, Week 2.

Bandannas will be available for purchase from Monday 22 to Friday 29 October for $5 at the front and back entrances before school, during recess and at lunch. Bandannas can be worn on Friday 26 October to show support and all funds raised will go to CanTeen, an Australian organisation for young people affected by cancer. CanTeen helps young people cope with cancer in their family. Approaches to Learning

Our focus of Pastoral Care this week has been on the one-on-one conversations between the student and their Tutor to discuss their Approaches to Learning grades from Term 3 (diligence engagement and behaviour), and to set academic learning goals as students begin their Term 4 studies. As always, these conversations are designed to provide the necessary support and enhance student learning, to focus positively on each student’s progress and performance, and to enable a positive mindset. Please do take the time to discuss with your child their approaches to learning grades, as always, the connection between home and school fosters a positive learning approach.

Study Skills Tip for October from Dr Prue Salter – Preparing for Blocks of Exams

For many students, a block of examinations can be daunting. Some students have no idea where to start and what they should work on. The first thing to do if you have examinations approaching in the next few months is to find out what topics will be tested. Even a simple question to teachers can get you started such as ‘are we being tested on the whole year’s work or just this semester?’. Once you know what topics will be covered, organise all of your learning materials and make sure nothing is missing and you have everything you need to review those topics. The next step is to make study notes on these topics if you haven’t been doing this throughout the year (hopefully you have!). You can visit the Summarising unit on the Study Skills Handbook to learn more about making effective study notes. Next it is time to start learning the notes (testing yourself on them over and over) and doing practice questions to make sure you can apply your knowledge to different types of questions. The Active Studying unit will give you lots of ideas on different study techniques to help you achieve your personal academic best.

If you have a number of weeks prior to the examinations, it is a good idea to make a plan in your diary or phone or on a whiteboard of what subjects you will study when. Try and allocate each subject once or twice each week, depending on the number of examinations you have. The Preparing for Exam Blocks unit explains in more detail how you put together a study plan for exams.

Uniform

Please could I ask for your support to check your son or daughter’s hem length. Trousers should be hemmed so that that the hemline falls halfway down the back of the shoe and dress length should be at the middle of the knee as a guideline.

Year 7

Welcome to Term 4! Only one more term of Secondary School ‘firsts’ for Yr 7 to experience. We have a busy term ahead of us. This week, students have met one-on-one with their Tutor to reflect on progress through Term 3 and set goals for Term 4. This term will be filled with examinations, Service opportunities, and tasks which encourage reflection on the successes (and challenges) of Yr 7. This week we welcome the return of Ms Privett to Cowper Blue after her term as Yr 9 Acting Assistant Advisor. Ms Takumura is looking after Cowper Yellow whilst Mr Okawa is on Long Service Leave; we welcome back Mr Okawa in 2019.

Examinations

In preparation for examinations in Week 3, students will be using Pastoral Care time as an opportunity for personal study. It is important that they schedule this time into their study routines and plan accordingly. Students have been encouraged to speak openly with their teachers about examination content and preparation. Should you have any questions, please contact the relevant teacher or Subject Coordinator directly.

The message we’re sending Yr 7 is that whilst exams are important, they are not the only source of subject assessment. Nerves are expected (and also useful) yet, no student should be losing sleep. Students should use the upcoming exams as an opportunity to track progress and gain an understanding of how examination sessions work in the Secondary School.

The Raising Children Network and the Study Skills Handbook have a wealth of useful information about exam preparation and managing any worries.

Head of Junior School

Vale Belinda Oxley

By now, you would all be aware of the extremely sad news of the passing of Miss Belinda Oxley, Dean of Early Childhood, who many of our Junior School community will have known. Miss Oxley has been at Redlands for 23 years so leaves a significant legacy behind and has taught generations of students in her time here, many of whom would recall her with great fondness. Her dedication and service to Redlands was exemplary and on a personal level, I particularly enjoyed getting to know her and her great sense of humour in the two terms she served as Acting Head of Early Childhood in 2016 and through her role on our Junior Campus leadership team. If Redlands families wish to, Miss Oxley’s family has suggested a donation to the Cancer Council in lieu of flowers would be most appreciated. For families that may have known Miss Oxley well, the funeral will take place at 10.30am next Monday 22 October in the Camellia Room at Macquarie Park Northern Cemetery (corner of Delhi Rd and Plassey Rd, Macquarie Park). I know you will join me in keeping the many members of our community who have been impacted by this news in your thoughts and prayers in the coming days and weeks.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Opportunities

For students in Stage 3, all Redlands students in Yrs 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to interact with a range of STEAM industry professionals in hands-on workshops throughout the day as we also welcome 150 students from other local schools. Listed below are some of the hands-on workshops that have been organised and I thank Mrs Winrow and Mr Coutts for helping to arrange this experience for students, which we hope will also be a continued partnership in future years.

Later this term, we are also delighted to host the inaugural Lower North Shore Eye Heart Science STEM competition for primary-aged students from a range of local schools. As well as Redlands students, this competition has been extended to over 25 local schools who have been invited to enter and present a STEM experiment that they have completed. At the event, the young scientists will be provided with a small desk to present their entry and attendees will be able to engage with the entrants and view their submissions. At the close of the event, prizes are awarded and all participants will be acknowledged for their submissions. Our Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mr Coutts, presented this opportunity to all Junior School students in our assembly this week and class teachers will also encourage students to consider entries to this opportunity.

Eye Heart Science was set up by Dr Alana Wylie, who has been our Junior School scientist-in-residence since 2012. After starting this volunteering role with us, Dr Wylie has found great inspiration and passion in her work with students, so much so that she has given up her role as a medical researcher to help inspire and motivate the next generation of critical thinkers from primary and secondary students, to educators alike. Through her experiences and industry relationships, she also aims to increase awareness of the careers that exist in STEM-related fields and ignite young minds to think critically, equip them with a problem-solving mindset, and foster an inquiry-based learning culture where asking why is encouraged.

I look forward to sharing additional information closer to the time of these events.

Heart Foundation

As we come to the end of our fundraising for the Heart Foundation, students were rewarded on Monday with a special guest at assembly. Chloe Hosking, a gold medal winner at the Commonwealth Games, shared stories of her journey as a road cyclist. The students were very engaged in Chloe’s talk, which reflected on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle by staying active and having a passion for what you do in life. Students relished in the opportunity to hold her medals! Redlands has currently raised $46,076 through the Jump Rope for Heart program and is the highest fundraising school in the country over the 35 years of the program. I acknowledge the leadership of Yr 1 teacher, Mrs Chipper, who coordinated the whole effort for the Junior Campus this year and thank the students involved for their active participation.

School Bus Pass Applications 2019

We have been advised that School student applications for 2019 have now opened from Monday 15 October.

Students progressing to Yr 3 and Yr 7 do not need to re-apply if they:

  • are continuing at the same school
  • are residing at the same address
  • have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2018 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after  31 December 2018, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out during December 2018 and January 2019. For further information visit https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts

Your Light will Shine On

As many of you are aware, the School suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Belinda Oxley in the last week of the holidays. Whilst she underwent many months of treatment, Belinda chose to share her private journey amongst colleagues and close friends only. With immeasurable strength and never one to complain, Belinda aimed to continue in her role as Dean and teacher as long as possible. Her dedication and passion towards Early Childhood education was amongst the deepest I have seen in my career. Belinda’s ability to inspire children’s creativity and produce beautiful artwork was one of her many, extraordinary talents; however, it was her never-failing optimism, strength and positivity throughout her life, and especially toward the final stages, that will be something that I could only ever aspire to and will remain with me forever.

As the School’s earlier correspondence mentioned, we have not publicly announced or talked about this news in an assembly or chapel with the students, as each child processes their feelings in a manner according to their needs. During class, some students have individually sought out their teacher and asked questions which were appropriate and could be answered with great care and sensitivity. Sam Kourakis, Shelly Acland and Fiona McKenzie, in their respective roles of Counsellors and Chaplain, have been strategic and thoughtful in their approach when guiding the children and staff through what is and will continue to be an emotional journey. Celebrating Miss Oxley’s many talents and the countless blessings she brought to the children’s lives, will be at the core of our messages with the students. I encourage you to seek out the staff members above, should you have any concerns. The Prep Library has put together some helpful resources which can assist with any questions that may arise in the coming days or weeks, additionally, the Cancer Council website gives practical advice to families, should you require a further resource.

This week, so many people from our community have sent their condolences to the School and expressed their sadness with Belinda’s passing. Your messages have been shared and your support has truly touched all the staff. True to their character, the Early Childhood staff have shown remarkable courage and resolve as they faced this first week, placing the students’ needs before their own and I sincerely thank them.

Belinda’s funeral will be held on Monday 22 October at Macquarie Park Northern Cemetery, Delhi Rd and Plassey Rd, Macquarie Park in the Camellia Room at 10.30am. In place of flowers, the family have suggested that a donation be made in honor of Belinda, to the Cancer Council. Further correspondence has been emailed to families providing information about the service and the day at school.

Term 4

I extend a very warm welcome back to school to all members of the Redlands community and I hope that you had a chance to catch your breath after a very busy term and enjoy some relaxing moments with your family. We have such a lovely term of activities to look forward to before the very special end of year celebrations, including Prep Picnic Day and Prep Presentation Day. A gentle reminder that summer uniform is to be worn this term and a full description of this can be found in the Student Planner. I would like to welcome the following new students and their families who are joining Redlands Preparatory this term.
Kindergarten – Max Humphrey – Kindy Orange
Yr 2 – Anna Field – Two Aqua

Prep Games Day

The weather was perfect for the annual Preparatory Games Day which was held on the last day of Term 3 and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thank you to Phill Rogers, Jacqui Longworth and Belinda Oxley for their organisation of the event, ensuring a smooth-running sports day. Thanks also to the Junior Canteen who supplied treats throughout the day and the Yr 5 students who showed exemplary leadership during the Tabloid Games. All competitors demonstrated sportsmanship and determination as they completed their events.

Yr 2 Greek Day

In the last week of Term 3, Yr 2 enjoyed a wonderful morning celebrating their learning of Greek Mythology. The students came to school dressed as a Greek God or Goddess of their choice and they thoroughly enjoyed chatting about their costumes and symbols. The Yr 2 classes engaged in a rotation of activities including reading and discussing myths, as well as creating artworks based on aspects from each myth.

“It was lots of fun to come to school dressed up as Aphrodite. I loved painting Persephone’s garden, where one side was in colour and the other side in darkness.” Alice Flynn

“I enjoyed listening to the story of Arachne and then making our own spider out of plasticine. Afterwards, we made a huge spider web by rolling a ball of wool to each other while sitting in a circle. We were then able to place our spiders somewhere on the web.” Ollie Hosker

Olympian Cyclist, Chloe Hosking, Visits Prep

As the Prep School reached the end of fundraising for the Heart Foundation, students were rewarded on Monday with a special guest at assembly. Chloe Hosking, a gold medal winner at the Commonwealth Games, shared stories of her journey as a road cyclist. The students were very engaged in Chloe’s talk, which reflected the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle by staying active, the importance of participating in a variety of sports when you are young and having a passion for what you do in life. Students relished in the opportunity to hold Chloe’s medals and take photographs with her. Redlands has currently raised $46,076 through the Jump Rope for Heart program and is the highest fundraising school in the country over its 35 year history. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Mrs Kimberlee Chipper, for her enthusiastic leadership and motivation of the students throughout the event.

Head of Secondary Sport

I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
William Ernest Henley

The Invictus Games, named after the famous poem by William Ernest Henley, is an international adaptive multi-sport event, created by HRH Prince Harry, where wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans take part in a range of sports. The ABC featured The Invictus Games on an episode of Australian Story on Monday night which highlighted the effect this charity has had on numerous individuals, families and communities. The ABC followed the story of Gary Robinson, a member of the 2nd Commando Regiment in the Special Forces of the Australian Army. Gary sustained severe injuries in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan in 2010. Gary is now a member of the Australian Invictus Games team and told his remarkable story of adversity and grit where he overcame significant physical, mental and emotional injuries he sustained in the crash.

Prince Harry created Invictus Games to enhance the power that sport has to make a positive impact on those individuals who have sustained injuries from war. The Invictus Games began in 2014 in London; the 2018 Games represent the fourth competition and will take place from 20-27 October in Sydney. What has become apparent since the Games inception, is the power sport can have on an individual, not just from a physical perspective but also through emotional and mental benefits. Prince Harry, when interviewed about the Games, highlighted that whilst we often see the physical injuries and trauma to these veterans “it is the mental injuries that are invisible”, “these Games demonstrate the power of sport for global communities to see people that should have been dead to just compete. Compete with joy on their faces and in their hearts”.  The term ‘Invictus’ is Latin for ‘unconquerable’ and the poem of the same name mentions the term, “my unconquerable soul” referring not to the physical but something stronger and more intangible, of mental strength and willpower from within the individual. At a superficial level, we know sport provides an outlet to ensure we maintain a degree of physical activity and health however, we all greatly underestimate the value and power sport possesses. Merely seeing sport as a physical activity leaves its rationale very short of its true value to individuals, families and communities. The story of the Invictus Games and an individual such as Gary Robinson, shows how sport can give people purpose and meaning by healing mental and emotional wounds as well as building social outlets to share and respect these difficulties with other people. Today mental health appears in some cases to still carry stigma. These games are an example of how sport can have a positive impact on the human spirit for individuals, families and their communities around them.

“The power of sport can change lives”, HRH Prince Harry.

Athletics

Redlands had a strong team of athletes compete at the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships in both track and field events against some of the best track and field athletes in Australia. We achieved some exceptional results including:

Basketball

Thank you to all of the Basketball players who attended the pre-season camp in Berry over the holidays. With former Sydney Kings Captain Tom Garlepp attending as a guest coach, it was a great opportunity for both players and coaches to learn from one of Sydney’s best. Our boys and girls teams had the opportunity to play against the Shoalhaven Tigers U16 Representative teams, with both of our teams putting what they had learnt into play to result in two big wins. Well done to all of the students.

Just a reminder that the Round 1 of the ISA Season will commence next Saturday 27 October. Please refer to Redlands Pulse for the draw and information relating to the upcoming season.

The Basketball AGM will be held next Thursday 25 October, 6.00-7.00pm in room L1.2. Please email Kate Seebohm to register your attendance.

Rowing

Summer Sports Pre-Season Camp

During the school holidays a number of our senior rowers headed to Berry as part of the Summer Sports Pre-Season Camp. We used this time to focus on single scull rowing where each student is in a boat by themselves but training together. The volume of work completed by the students was impressive, with some students covering up to 150km across the four days of camp. We also had the unique opportunity to train in an Octuple Scull for a session, this is an eight-person boat where each student has two sculling oars, something that is not typically seen often in Australia.

The skill development of spending that much time in the sculls will transfer into crew boats as we move through the season and already we can see a difference to our training sessions back on Middle Harbour in how confidently some of our rowers now move in the sculls.

Season Launch BBQ and Boat Naming – Saturday 20 October

This weekend our Rowing Parents and Friends Committee will be hosting a BBQ at Mosman Rowing Club from 12.00-1.30pm to formally launch the new Rowing season. As part of this, we will also be naming our newest boys quad that was delivered in March along with a number of unnamed sculls. This is an opportunity for us to acknowledge the contribution that people have made over a number of years to the Rowing program.

The new boy’s quad will be named after Lisa MacDonald. Lisa served as the President of the Rowing Parents and Friends group for a number of years where she was instrumental in the growth of our Corporate Rowing program that runs in May each year.

The sculls will be named after previous Captains of Rowing to acknowledge their leadership and contribution to the program. These previous captains are as follows:
Harriet MacDonald – 2014/2015 Captain
Molly Parker – 2015/2016 Girls Captain
James Townsend – 2015/2016 Girls Captain
Beth O’Sullivan – 2016/2017 Girls Captain
Freddy Learoyd – 2016/2017 Boys Captain
Natasha Barac – 2017/2018 Girls Captain
Gabe O’Sullivan – 2017/2018 Boys Captain

Touch Football

Over the Term 3 holidays, our 1stVI Girls Touch Football team, along with six development players, travelled to Berry to participate in the Summer Pre-Season Camp. Not only was this a wonderful opportunity to travel and build cohesion as a squad, it was also, and more importantly, a chance to upskill and develop as players. All of the girls were brilliant, their attitude and approach to the training sessions always being positive, and to see how far these players have come across those four days was one of the most promising aspects of the Camp. There were some very tough fitness sessions, early mornings and double sessions in the rain but all of the athletes faced these challenges head on and supported their teammates.

This Camp was the perfect way for our 1st VI Girls to work with their coaches in preparation for what will be a very tough ISA Competition and I would like to congratulate all of the athletes who attended. I would like to especially thank our new Touch Football Captain for 2018, Caitlin Du Plooy, her leadership and positivity across the entire Camp, especially towards our youngest athletes, was so encouraging to see and was such a benefit for her coaches.

Waterpolo

Congratulations to Maddy Hampton-Vickers (Yr 10) who, during the holidays, represented Sydney University at the U16s National Waterpolo Championships. Maddy and her team finished in 3rd place which is a fantastic achievement.

Junior Sport

Term 4 always kicks off in a hurry and this one will be no different. IPSHA fixtures for Basketball, Girls Basketball and Tennis start this weekend. The draws for all fixtures have been emailed to players and are available here.

Basketball

We have expanded our Basketball program from Term 1 by eight teams. The Blue and Gold teams that played intra-squad fixtures early in the year will take on opponents from other schools after showing tremendous skill development and approach to games in their rookie season. Our Yr 5/6 teams are all at indoor venues this weekend. Rain shouldn’t affect play.

For our Yr 3/4 team playing at Sydney Grammar St Ives, the venue is outdoor and may be impacted by weather. If the host school informs me of a cancellation, I’ll get that information out to parents via SMS immediately, but please remember, we are informed of cancellation by the host school!

Sign up for our Girl’s teams was tremendously popular and we’ve added six teams into the Girls competition for Term 4. They’ll take on teams from other IPSHA Girls schools over the next six weeks in what for many will be their first Basketball experience. All of our Girls venues this week are indoor so there shouldn’t be any problems with rain!

Holiday Basketball Camp

Our basketballers worked hard through the final week of camp to set themselves up for a great second half of the season. The three day camp had nearly 50 basketballers in attendance and the skills, drills and game play were exhausting to watch. Keep an eye out this weekend, some of the skills on show were exceptional.

Tennis

Tennis teams have been selected and have been communicated to players and parents by email. Both teams are playing at home at Cammeray this weekend, so it’ll be a great show of team spirit and camaraderie across our Tennis group. Fingers crossed for fair weather. If there are any weather problems an SMS will be sent as early as possible.

Cricket

Our cricketers have a bye this week and will have a net session at 9.30am on the Junior School nets.

Surf Education

Please check your online permission for the upcoming Surf Education program. Students from Yrs 3-6 will be attending Surf Education lessons as part of the PE Curriculum in Weeks 4 and 5. As we are entering the Sydney summer, it’s a great chance for students to be reminded of safety on the beach and in the water. The kids will be under the instruction of Surf Live Saving, will be undertaking a range of rescues, water danger identification, basic first aid and some fun beach games. The program this year is being administered at Freshwater beach with a new surf tuition provider. It looks like it’ll be awesome.

Photos

We love photos and showing off your great action shots from sports fixtures on Saturday. If anyone has any pics or takes any, I love to use them to showcase our current teams and past teams on the rolling display in Dunnet Hall. Please send me the pics, or a link or even pop them in on a USB (it will be returned) to the Sports Office or email them

Drama and Theatre

Welcome to our new families joining Redlands and welcome back to our students, parents and friends who are involved in the many activities offered in Drama and Theatre at Redlands.
