Issue 30 2023 Term 4 Week 1 - 12 Oct 2023

From The Principal

It was wonderful to see students returning to school this week after what I hope was a relaxing break. Term 4 is always action-packed and we look forward to the many events and celebrations which will bring the year to a close.

We bid a fond farewell to the Class of 2023 in Term 3 with a number of celebratory events; however, we have seen many of them in at school over the holiday period preparing for their examinations. Yesterday, the Higher School Certificate (HSC) students commenced their examinations with the English paper and the International Baccalaureate (IB) students will start their examination period on Monday 21 October. We wish them all every success in these examinations.

While the HSC Examinations have only just commenced, we have already had a number of Year 12 students nominated for HSC Showcases for their Major Works. This is a wonderful accomplishment and a fitting tribute to their efforts in these practical HSC subjects over the past year. We congratulate the following students on these nominations to date:

  • Music (ENCORE): Lily Kneale, Jack Lazzarotto and Oscar Whatmough (Music Performance)
  • Dance (Callback): Josephine Simpson, Sebastian Tang and Avalon Thomas (Core Composition); Avalon Thomas (Core Performance and Major Study)
  • Drama (OnSTAGE): Keian Murphy, Sebastian Tang and Georgia Verschoor (Group Performance); Phoebe Barnett, Lachlan Dekker and Sebastian Tang (Individual Performances)

These HSC and IB examinations are the culmination of their schooling journey, and we know that our Year 12 students are working hard to achieve their personal bests. However, while there will be much discussion and reflection of results, scores and ATARs over the next few months, we also know that our Year 12 students (and the Class of 2023 as a whole) are far more than a “number” and should not be defined as such. As a proudly non-selective school with approximately half of our Year 12 students sitting the HSC and half sitting the IB, we have often seen simplistic and inaccurate assumptions made about a student or a cohort based on a “number”.

Our Vision is to inspire students to “achieve life-readiness and to let their light shine”, and while we have seen their lights shining brightly for a number of years, I also believe that our holistic Redlands education truly best prepares our graduating students for life after school. Some of our Year 12 students have already acquired important skills for their future careers; many of them have already received early offers to their universities of choice for next year; and all of them have developed sound values and invaluable dispositions to best prepare them for their journey after school.

So, while we wish our graduating Year 12 students all the best for the examinations over the next few weeks, we also know that their Redlands education cannot be just boiled down to a number and are confident that they leave school truly life-ready for the road ahead.

Over the course of this week our thoughts and prayers have been with the people of Israel and Palestine and also with any members of our community who are directly or indirectly affected by these recent events.

Community Update

Welcome to Term 4. We trust that you had the opportunity to enjoy some family time over the holiday period to rest and renew as another busy term of community events and activities awaits.

With the introduction of our Year 9 Experiential Program in 2025 and our Midawarr Program (through Culture College) moving to Year 10 from 2025, a reminder that an exclusive opportunity exists for our parent and carer community to experience this unique and extraordinary program through a Redlands Parent and Carer Midawarr Arnhem Land Trip in May 2024.

Our partnership with Culture College inspires and educates through the sharing of unique experiences and the celebration of traditional Yolŋu knowledge systems and customs, all shared in an authentic Yolŋu setting in northeast Arnhem Land. First Nations educators from along the East Coast also teach the diversity of their cultures and customs alongside Yolŋu, threading the stories together.

Your participation in this trip will directly contribute to the advancement of our job pathways program, which empowers young Yolŋu individuals through mentorship provided by esteemed senior Yolŋu leaders in the field of cultural education. Furthermore, this experience presents an occasion for the Redlands community to unite and engage in meaningful dialogues and collaborative roundtable discussions with Yolŋu educators.

This is quite literally a once in a lifetime opportunity to deeply explore miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma Festival. The trip is planned for Sunday 26 to Thursday 30 May 2024 and includes:

  • Camping accommodation, tents with single camp stretcher (1 or 2 per tent)
  • Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Morning and afternoon tea breaks (light snacks)
  • Airport transfers to and from Gove airport and Gulkula
  • Transport in Nhulunbuy and surrounding areas
  • ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony
  • Visit to Buku – Yirrkala Arts Centre and Museum
  • Sharing of knowledge with local Yolŋu educators
  • Proceeds will contribute to a job pathways program to help provide training, further education and job opportunities to Yolŋu educators within the program
  • Round-trip economy airfare from Sydney to Cairns return on Virgin Australia scheduled
  • Round-trip economy airfare from Cairns to Gove return on Air North

Gather a group of friends, a friend or join the wider group for this once in a lifetime experience not to be missed. Places on this exclusive trip can now be reserved by competing a booking form which can be assessed HERE.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlands Parents and Friends

Welcome back to a new school term and welcome to all the new families joining Redlands! One last term to go before the end of another amazing year – and it’s a busy one at that. Our children still have final exams, camps, surf education and year-end performances to get through. We also have several parent social gatherings (there are still seats available at the Melbourne Cup Luncheon!), as well as our Annual General Meeting, planned in the coming weeks – please see details below and do attend if you have the chance.

Notice of Annual General Meeting

All parents and guardians of current students are invited and encouraged to attend the Redlands Parents and Friends Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday 26 October 2023 at 6:30pm. The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups and Friends of Groups work together to support our school and the wider Redlands community.  All our volunteer members play a vital role in the growth and prosperity of Redlands by keeping us connected, included and informed.

The AGM provides a great opportunity for parents and guardians to hear how the RPFA serves the school community. The AGM will include:

  • a report from our Principal, Mr Sean Corcoran;
  • a review of the RPFA’s activities this year, along with plans for next year; and
  • the election of the RPFA Committee and its Executive Committee.

The AGM will run for approximately one hour. There is no obligation to nominate for a position or volunteer for any activities should you wish to attend.

Please RSVP here.

If you would like more information on how to become involved we would love to hear from you. Please email RPFA and we will be in touch. Nominations for RPFA Committee member roles will close at 6:30pm on Tuesday 24 October 2023.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Our walk next week on Wednesday 18 October is from Sirius Cove to Clifton Gardens. Meet at Bradleys Head Rd/Middle Head Rd roundabout at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie on 0406 691 533.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our next meeting will be in the second half of October, where we will be discussing Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens by Shankari Chandran.

We are also planning for the first meeting of next year to be a discussion of the entire Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley. There are eight books and they are great holiday reading!

A Focused Return to School

Monday marked a really strong start to Term 4 for students. Our Year 11 students left early on Monday morning for their final Redlands Camp and our Year 7 to 10 students bounced back onto the Senior Campus full of energy, with stories of faraway holidays and family staycations.

I really enjoyed being able to catch up with students so early on in the term via a range of assemblies held on Monday morning. Firstly, we gathered Year 10 who were reunited as a cohort after a term of Winter School. Then we moved to Stage assemblies in Redlands Hall.

It was wonderful to be able to welcome the following new students and staff members into our community.

NSW All Schools Championships

Congratulations to the following students!

Olivia Law (Yr 7) came 4th in the 13 years girls 1500m and 5th in 14 year girls 3000m and has qualified for the Australian Junior Athletics Championships.

Elizabeth Whelan (Yr 9) competed in the 14 years hammer throw. She came first with a distance of 42.86m and has qualified to represent Redlands in the NSW team at the Australian All Schools Championships in Perth, in December.

Amber Kusano (Yr 9) came 4th in the 15 years girls 800m and has qualified for the Australian Junior Athletics Championships.

Year 12

Yr 12 students kept their teachers busy marking practice submissions during the holidays and many attended school every day to study in the Redlands Learning Hub. The IB exams commence in a couple of weeks and the HSC exams began yesterday. We wish Year 12 all the best with their final examinations and know they will navigate this time with resilience and confidence.

Key Messages

During the assemblies on Monday morning, the students received a few key messages.

  • Term 4 requires a strong focus on academic study so students can demonstrate their learning in examination blocks designed to develop skills in revision, timed conditions and resilience.
  • Other People Matter – students are expected to be mindful of themselves and others in person and online. Considering and caring about others supports our own wellbeing.
  • Coaching Conversations begin in Week 2 and students are expected to set thoughtful and actionable goals for the term.

Students were affirmed for their positive contributions in Term 3.

  • Year 7 for their growth in assemblies through a focus on self-management strategies
  • Year 8 for their awareness of others and the development of a broader social awareness
  • Year 9 for leaning into the supports available at school and their responsible decision-making
  • Year 10 for doing an amazing job of developing new relationships and preparing themselves for Year 11

Students were also made aware of the updates to the following guidelines and policies:

These updates will be explored with students across this term in class and tutor time. The updates represent our dedication to ongoing review and renewal of our practices in support of the very best student outcomes.

Examination Information

Week 3 – Year 7 and Year 10

Week 4 – Year 8 and Year 10

Students in Stage 4 (Year 7 and 8) should be engaging in a minimum of 60 minutes study and revision each week day, and 2-3 hours on the weekend, from the start of Term 4.

Students in Stage 5 (Year 9 and 10) should be engaging in a minimum of 60-90 minutes study and revision each week day, and 3-4 hours on the weekend, from the start of Term 4.

Students will receive customisable study schedules to assist with the layout of their revision leading up to, and during, the examination block period.

Successful students adhere to a routine. Our experience shows that the stronger the habit formation, the stronger the skillset and capacity to tackle examinations. This experience is built from Year 7 and the design of the examination blocks is age and stage appropriate.

We appreciate parent support of the following:

  • Personal study schedule which details learning, study, sport and other activities from Week 1 to end of Week 3 or 4
  • Visibility of the study schedule and affirmation of its use as an organisational tool
  • Visiting Study Centre for quiet, group or assisted study – this can happen before or after Sport training of an afternoon
  • Calm and reflective management of expected stress and emotional regulation – the exams may be stressful and provoke a range of emotions. The examination period is brief and students have access to a range of supports.

After the Examinations

After the exams, the focus on learning and engagement will continue until the final day of term.

Students will not be winding down, but rather engaging in learning new skills and content that will help them as they start to prepare for 2024.

Mobile Phones at Redlands

State schools have completely banned mobile phones this week. At Redlands we believe in teaching self-management and responsible decision-making, and have in place clear expectations for device use.

Students were reminded that they are not allowed to have their mobile phone on their person during the school day – that means in class, at recess and at lunch. It also means at sport training and when they are engaged in cocurricular clubs, etc.

Mobile phones should be stored in a student’s locker at all times. If a student cannot manage to adhere to this expectation, their phone will be confiscated. If a student’s inability to manage their phone persists, the consequences will escalate.

Students have been reminded that if they need to contact mum or dad, they are to ask a member of the Reception team to phone for them, or to see their Tutor or YA who may give them special permission to use their phone.

If students need to use their phone for learning, their teacher will alert them, and build in time during the lesson for the mobile phone to be retrieved and returned to the locker.

Why are we engaged with this mobile phone expectation at Redlands? Our students require the support of adults to effectively manage themselves and their devices. Last term they told us they needed greater support and boundaries, via surveys and focus groups. The constant notifications, the group chats, the tiktok videos which regularly interrupt their personal space negatively impact their focus and self-management, as well as their capacity to learn and develop in-person relationships. We have confidence that our students can manage this expectation and we appreciate parent support of this important self-management strategy.

Year 10

Burn Bright

In alignment with the Term 4 mantra, “Other People Matter,” and in preparation for their senior studies, Year 10 students participated in a half-day incursion conducted by Burn Bright. Their Altitude wellbeing program delves into the idea that as we approach the pinnacle of our high school journey and gaze into the future, it becomes imperative to examine the foundational aspects of our character. These qualities not only guide us during our moments of triumph but also during times of adversity. Throughout the program, Burn Bright explored the fundamental skills and introspection required for individuals to attain lasting personal success. They firmly believe that a solid foundation of healthy, robust relationships, along with the exploration of intentional relationships, contributes significantly to one’s journey both within and beyond the school environment. Burn Bright maintains that success thrives within a supportive network but is even more deeply rooted in a genuine understanding of one’s character. The Altitude program fostered this growth through the exploration of daily habits, ongoing self-reflection, and meaningful conversations about how we can become the best versions of ourselves, not only for our own benefit but also for the betterment of those around us.

Examinations

The Year 10 Examination block is scheduled for the entirety of Week 3. Students have already received their timetables for this period, which can also be accessed through Pulse. Additionally, study resources are readily available on ILearn. Students are advised to dedicate a minimum of approximately 2 hours of study per night leading up to the examinations, with an additional 5-6 hours over the weekend. These timeframes serve as a baseline for successfully completing the examinations and experiencing a sense of achievement and satisfaction.

This week, during our academic care time sessions, students have been diligently crafting their study planners as they set sail on their journey to prepare for their Yearly Exams. It’s crucial for students to personalise these planners to their unique needs, ensuring that they allocate their time equitably among their various subjects while also accommodating other commitments such as sports training and cocurricular activities. The aim of these exams for students in Years 7-10 is not just about performance, but also about cultivating effective study habits and routines that will serve them well as they progress towards their senior studies. We warmly encourage parents to engage with their children, asking them to share their study planners and engage in meaningful discussions about their study strategies.

Following Week 3, Week 4 will offer an opportunity for feedback and self-reflection before students embark on camp.

Effective Study and Long-Term Memory:

Please see this link for a recent article from The Conversation providing advice on how to create the conditions for effective study.

The article has two key messages:

  • Effective study allows students to take the knowledge and skills learned in class daily from their sensory memory and ‘encode’ it into their long-term memory. The stronger memory pathways become, the easier it is for students to retrieve information and skills processes during exams. The study habits used to encode this information and these skills not only helps in exams, but also for an individual’s learning in the long term.
  • Don’t cram! The process of encoding takes time as you are “etching a memory superhighway”. There are certain conditions, such as a workspace free from distractions, scheduling regular study sessions over time and utilising different techniques depending on the subject that will help with this process. Good sleep and brain breaks are also essential.

Year 10 Harbour Cruise

Throughout the week, Ms Matthews engaged students in a discussion about this event, and all families received a parent letter with additional details, including ticketing information. We kindly request your careful attention to the expectations for students on the evening of the event and the School’s requirements for student pick-up at the end of the cruise. Please ensure that students are picked up by their parent or guardian no later than 10:30pm sharp. Students are not permitted to leave on their own, including using Uber or Taxi services. If parents prefer for their child to be collected and taken home by another Redlands parent, this request must be communicated in writing (via email) to Ms Vale and Ms Wang by Friday, 24 November. Changes to pick-up arrangements will not be accepted after this date.

We eagerly anticipate an enjoyable evening of celebration.

Uniform

As we embark on a new term, it is crucial to emphasise the significance of personal appearance and strict adherence to the Redlands Uniform Policy. Maintaining a well-kept school uniform, including a neatly tucked-in shirt, belt, appropriate dress length and no makeup, holds great importance. It conveys dedication and respect for both the School’s uniform policy and the situation at hand. This attention to detail boosts confidence, sending a clear message of adherence to established norms. Creating positive first impressions through proper attire can communicate responsibility and reliability to others. Embracing the habit of wearing the correct uniform instils discipline and underscores the broader life lesson that our presentation matters, impacting our interactions, opportunities, and relationships, both within and beyond the Redlands community. It underscores our ability to adapt, show respect, and cultivate a level of care that contributes to personal and future success.

Year 9

Welcome to Term 4

Welcome back to another term, and one which will prove to be a busy one with Yr 9 Yearly Examinations taking place in Week 4, with the week following dedicated to the Yr 9 Experience Program Week.

Examinations

The Year 9 Examination block is scheduled for the entirety of Week 4. Students have already received their timetables for this period, which can also be accessed through Pulse and on the Yr 9 Pastoral Page. Additionally, Ms Rolon has spoken to students about the specific ways to study for each subject area.  Students are advised to dedicate a minimum of approximately 1.5 hours of study per night leading up to the examinations, with additional hours over the weekend. These timeframes serve as a baseline for successfully completing the examinations and experiencing a sense of achievement and satisfaction.

Subject Focus – Science

There was a fabulous engagement with both the Science Olympiads and the ICAS competitions this year and there are a large number of Distinctions and High Distinction across all Year Groups.

The 2023 International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in Science is undertaken by over 400,000 students across Australia and the region and is a rigorous test of scientific thinking. Participation in the competition provides our students with excellent examination practice and an opportunity to see how they fare in competition with students of their own age from across the country. Scientific skills such as experimentation, empirical observation, logical reasoning, scientific analysis and critical thinking not only help you do well in STEM subjects – they are critical components of humankind’s most successful system for pursuing knowledge: the scientific method. Year 7

Energy, Examinations and End of YearWelcome to Term 4

Welcome back to another term, and one which will no doubt be a busy one for our Year 7 students as they face their first ever Yearly Examinations in the Secondary School and seek to learn from these in preparation for engaging wholeheartedly in their future Year 8 subjects.

Students returned to school with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and this was no more evident than in 7G PE, which I was fortunate enough to be placed on to cover on Monday. Engaging in a range of team-based games, the students interacted with determination, passion and respect. It was valuable for me to see firsthand the lessons being gained about each individual’s personal capacity but, perhaps more importantly, how success comes from great teamwork – a very useful lesson for all of Year 7 to take as they move through the rest of this year. The importance of listening to instructions and communicating effectively were also great take-aways from the class.

The term also began with a joint welcome assembly for Yrs 7 and 8. Students were spoken to by the Head of Secondary School, Ms Van de Peer; Dean of Studies (7-10), Ms Rolon; and Dean of Students, Ms Jansons. Students were warmly welcomed back to this important term and some key messages were conveyed:

  • Now is the time to be working diligently for your examinations, aiming to complete some study every night and on the weekend.
  • Other people matter – we need to be considerate and respectful in our interactions with all the people we interact with in our daily lives.
  • Reminder that phones must stay locked in lockers throughout the duration of the school day.

Next Monday, we will be having another round of Growth Conversations in our Tutor groups. Students will be encouraged to set clear goals based around how to achieve their best in their upcoming examinations and also how best to embody the value that ‘other people matter.’

I look forward to seeing Yr 7 embrace their challenges and opportunities this term as they continue to build on their personal growth whilst also supporting others in their cohort and the Redlands community.

Academic Care – Examinations and Study Timetables

This week, during our academic care time in Tutor sessions, students have been diligently crafting study planners as they set sail on their journey to prepare for their Yearly Examinations, which begin in Week 3. The Examination timetable can be found on the Yr 7 Pulse page.

It is crucial for students to personalise their study planners to their unique needs, ensuring that they allocate their time equitably among their various subjects, while also accommodating other commitments such as sports training and co-curricular activities. The aim of these Yearly Examinations for students in Years 7-10 is not just about performance, but also about cultivating effective study habits and routines that will serve them well as they progress towards their Senior Studies. We warmly encourage parents to engage with their children, asking them to share their study planners and engage in meaningful discussions about their study strategies.

If you are interested I have recently come across a good article from The Conversation that provides insight into the importance of understanding how our memory works and its link to effective study. Please see this link for further reading.

Science ICAS

Recently, several of our Year 7 students had great success in the 2023 International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in Science. ICAS is undertaken by over 400,000 students across Australia and the region and is a rigorous test of scientific thinking. Participation in the competition provides our students with excellent examination practice and an opportunity to see how they fare in competition with students of their own age from across the country. Scientific skills such as experimentation, empirical observation, logical reasoning, scientific analysis and critical thinking not only help students do well in STEM subjects – they are critical components of humankind’s most successful system for pursuing knowledge: the scientific method. A High Distinction in this competition represents the top 1% of the participants while a Distinction is the next top 10%.

Congratulations to the following students for their wonderful achievements in this competition.

  • Lachlan Carter – High Distinction
  • Fergus Kerr – Distinction
  • Charlie Lee – Distinction
  • Anay Mishra Mall – Distinction
  • Liam Randall – Distinction

Term 4 Off and Running

It has been wonderful to have felt the buzz of energy on the campus as we returned to Term 4 in what promises to be another action-packed term. We look forward to the return of summer representative sport this weekend with no less than seventeen teams competing for Redlands across three sports. There are also a number of exciting events across the term as you would have noted in my Term 4 Welcome Letter sent last week via Pulse and we look forward to our Yr 6 students having a memorable final term of primary schooling.

In our first assembly of the term, we reflected on our #oneword goals for the year as well as the midyear goals that students set to accomplish by the end of the year. Teachers will continue to guide students towards successfully achieving these but I encourage parents to also be part of these conversations.

Yr 6 Police Liaison Officer Talk

People make mistakes from time to time and there is the opportunity to learn from them. But if it happens again, it has become a choice not a mistake”.

This was an important part of the message that Senior Constable Lynda Hart shared with Yr 6 this week in her role as a Community Liaison Officer as she talked about aspects of staying safe online and making positive choices. Building upon the workshop with ySafe earlier this year and others internally led by staff, this important session provided Yr 6 with some excellent practical strategies on how to stay safe and behave both respectfully and legally online.

In particular, Senior Constable Hart talked about her top three areas for Cybersafety: Privacy, Reputation and Relationships.

Privacy: Similar to stranger danger awareness for children, students were asked to not to chat to anyone that they did not know online, particularly in gaming stations where the students were amazed to hear that the average age of a gamer was 34 years old!

Reputation: the key message was to STOP and THINK before posting or sharing any images, content or comments including in private chat groups. She reiterated the fact that once posted, it never goes away and is part of your digital footprint.

Relationships: Similar to in-person connections, harassment and intimidation online are also against the law and shared that if students did feel bullied online, they should block the person, not reply, take relevant screenshots and then report it to a responsible adult. Senior Constable Hart also talked about having like-minded friendships as this would often align with personal values.

A final message for the students to take away was the notion of being a positive upstander online as well as face to face. Whilst potentially uncomfortable, stepping up and saying something is always a positive action and adults would always be supportive of this.

Whilst the recommended age for social media sites such as Instagram and Snapchat are 13 years and over, the reality is that we know that there are Junior School students who use these sites frequently. As a School, we will continue to guide students to make good choices in these virtual spaces too but I would encourage that parents also keep a watchful eye to support your child’s digital presence and interactions.

As shared many times before, Redlands has a long-standing partnership with industry leaders, ySafe, and I commend Redlands’ Cybersafety Hub which is a rich source of information and guidance for our families as we navigate this space.

ICAS Assessments – Student Achievements

In our assembly, we congratulated students involved in International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) assessments in Maths, English, Spelling, Digital Technologies and Science

last term. In particular, we recognised the students who received Distinctions (Top 10% in Australia) or High Distinctions (Top 1%). A number of Redlands students in Yrs 3 to 6 took part in this national competition and we received the results just before the end of term. Students received their certificates in class at the end of last term.

Head of Preparatory School

Welcome to Term 4

It is lovely to have all our students back on campus after a lovely break and change to routine. Opening the Reception front door is one of my favourite things to do on the first day back after a break. I get to enjoy all the stories, admire the lost teeth and to gasp in astonishment at the growth spurts that some of students have gone through over the two-week period. We are all super excited to be starting Term 4 and embarking on the end of year preparations and reporting period.

Our focus this term in Prep is to continue demonstrating compassion and kindness to others in our Redlands community and towards others as we move into the Christmas period.

Ms McKenzie will soon be outlining specific opportunities for us to support those less fortunate in our community by donating clothing and food items as well as writing messages of support and kindness for the elderly.  Our students have so many opportunities and are so very lucky to come to a school like Redlands, so to help them learn and experience humility and empathy in the formative years is a gift and a privilege for us as educators.  Please keep an eye on Note Day and on Pulse for school initiatives that encourage our youngest of learners to think of others.

Lunchtime Fun with Ms Longworth – Be Active, Be Healthy and Have Fun!

This week during recess and lunch we have offered students a variety of activities that provide them with a wider choice of things to do and opportunities to play with different friends. Students have enjoyed challenges in soccer, frisbee, handstands, aeroplane making and throwing, trampoline jumps, stompers, grip ball and ice cream scoops. We have also included some mind challenges with chess games, puzzles and riddles.

The children have been able to try some new activities, reconnect with their peers after the holidays and most importantly have fun.

This term each class will have a ‘lunchtime basket’ in their rooms full of balls, chalk and other equipment to use in the playground, if your child would like to bring their own soft ball or piece of equipment, they are welcome to bring it in if it is named and they look after it.

Junior Campus Student Code of Conduct

At Redlands, our approach to managing student behaviour is underpinned by our School Values of honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, fairness and moral courage; and a constant drive to deliver an exceptional, holistic education which fosters the growth and development of our students in all aspects of their lives. This code ensures that students and all members of the school community understand the standards of student behaviour that are expected at the school during the course of a student’s enrolment.

I encourage all families to read the new Junior Campus Student Code of Conduct that can now be found on Pulse. This document provides our community with a clear and fair understanding of what is expected of a Redlands student from P-12. Please take the time to perhaps discuss this with your child and to ensure they have a clear understanding of what behaviour is acceptable and not acceptable at school. At school the consequences are discussed to ensure our young learners understand the ‘why’ but having a consistent approach in this discussion between home and school would be helpful. Thank you for supporting us with this.

Term 4 Notice of Departure

Please take note that if you are planning to leave Redlands during or at the end of Term 4, you were required to give notice to the Registrar and / or Head of Section by the end of the first week of Term 3, to avoid fees in lieu.

If you are leaving Redlands during or at the end of Term 4 and have not advised the School, could you please do so by the end of this week.

Changes to Storypark

Recently we have been reflecting on our how we use Storypark for class communication. We are reviewing what information we send home, how often and the justification on how much time this can possibly take away from our precious time with the children. This term we will reduce the weekly updates about your child’s class and only report on special events. Later in the term, will we seek your feedback and conduct a survey to assess the way we can use Storypark best. If you have any questions or would like to provide feedback, please talk to your class teacher or Mrs Huon.

Secondary Sport

Welcome everyone back to Term 4, we are wishing the Year 12 students the best of luck with their HSC and IB examinations and we are looking forward to the Year 11 students taking their leadership positions and leading the student body into 2024. As we begin Term 4, we look ahead to a blockbuster term of exams, assessments, camps and a lot of sport. It is important to remember that maintaining sport training during exams periods is crucial for overall wellbeing of students for many compelling reasons:

  • Reduces Stress and Anxiety – regular physical activity has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels, we all know for some students, exams can be exceptionally stressful and engaging in sport helps students to manage this stress by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters, which can improve their mental and emotional state.
  • Enhanced Cognitive Function – physical exercise enhances cognitive functions, including memory, concentration and problem solving skills. By continuing their sports training, students can actually improve their academic performance. Regular physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, which can boost mental acuity and help them retain information more effectively.
  • Sense of Discipline and Time Management – participating in sports fosters a sense of discipline and time management. By balancing academic commitments with sports, students learn to prioritise their tasks, set goals and allocate their time efficiently. This skill set is not only beneficial during exam periods but also through their lives.
  • Social Interaction and Emotional Support – continuing with their training routines throughout exam periods provides opportunities for students to have social interactions and emotional support, this allows them to stay connected with their peers, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness during intense study periods.

‘Life’s challenge is to find your ‘big reasons’ why you do what you do. Finding these reasons and being deeply connected to them keeps you going when the going gets tough’
Bo Hanson

Bus Transport

When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Athletics

NSW All Schools Athletics Championships

Please find below my reflection from the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships.

Congratulations to all the Redlands athletes who participated at the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park over the school holidays.

Isaac Brooks proved himself to be a force to be reckoned with at the championships. In the fiercely competitive 17 years boys 800m event, he not only secured a podium finish but also set a personal best time of 1:53. His performance earned him the status of a national qualifier, showcasing his talent and dedication to the sport.

In the 14 years Hammer Throw, Elizabeth Whelan demonstrated her prowess as she clinched the gold medal with an impressive throw of 42.86 meters. Not only did she claim the top spot in her category, but she also earned a national qualifier status. Elizabeth’s dedication and hard work are a testament to her extraordinary skills in this specialised event.

Olivia Law showcased her versatility and endurance by participating in two events. In the 13 years girls 1500m, Olivia secured a commendable 4th place with a time of 4:46. She didn’t stop there and took on the 14 years girls 3000m, where she finished 5th with an outstanding time of 10:28. Olivia ran up an age group in the 3000m and achieved a national qualifier.

Amber Kusano’s performance in the 15 years girls category was nothing short of exceptional. She secured 4th place in the 800m with a time of 2:20.8 and later took on the 15 years 400m event, where she finished 10th with a time of 1:02.90. Amber’s achievements include earning a national qualifier status in the 400m event, showcasing her immense potential as a middle-distance runner.

Ethan Lee achieved a personal best time of 4:38 in the 14 years 1500m, while Finn Gurney gave his best in the 13 years Boys 800m and 1500m events and our Track and Field Captain, Jaiden Confessore finished 25th in the boys 100m running a swift time of 11.86s.

The Redlands community is proud of these talented athletes for their outstanding performances at the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships. Their achievements not only reflect their dedication and hard work but also serve as an inspiration to fellow students and aspiring athletes.

Congratulations to Isaac Brooks, Elizabeth Whelan, Jaiden Confessore, Olivia Law, Amber Kusano, Ethan Lee, and Finn Gurney for their outstanding performances, and we look forward to witnessing their continued success in the world of athletics.

Fitness Centre

Welcome to the Fitness Centre for Term 4, 2023. The following changes to the Fitness Centre and our strength and conditioning program will begin over the course of the first few weeks of term.

Session times are staggered to provide more students access each morning with safe and effective coaching.

Year 11-12: 6:30-6:45am Latest Arrival/Start Time

Year 9-10: 6:45am Start Time

Year 7/8: 7:10am Start time.

Afternoon sessions are reserved for Rep sports.

ALL students will be provided a program that runs M/T/T/F mornings, except for Wednesday mornings Girls Only session. These programs will be aligned to our physical development framework and are designed to support the stage based physical development of students from years 7-12 in a safe and effective manner, whilst including individual student needs and ambitions within the gym.

All programs encompass a variation of the following:

  • Lower Body Push: Double + Single Leg – eg. Squat, Split Squat
  • Lower Body Pull: Double + Single Leg – eg. Deadlift, Single Leg RDL (Hinge)
  • Upper Body Pull – Vertical + Horizontal – eg. Chin Up, Bench Pull
  • Upper Body Push – Vertical + Horizontal – eg. Push Press, Bench Press
  • Core – Anti-Extension + Anti- Lateral Flexion/Rotation – eg. Plank, Side Plank
  • Injury Prevention – Optional + Recommended

Programs are designed to target each of these areas within a session and across the week in a variety of loads to ensure each student gets the opportunity to develop a solid foundation and variety of movement competency whether they attend one session or attend all four.

Injury Prevention exercises will always be included in session to target areas that are prone to overuse and soft tissue -e.g., Hamstrings, Quads, Calf, Adductors.

As students consistently attend sessions, progress through programs and movement competency, they will be provided with more autonomy within their program.

Years 7-8 will be provided with a full (100%) program as demonstrated below, that encompasses all fundamental movement patterns and areas of the body.

Years 9-10 will be provided with a program that is 75% structured and 25% of the session encompassing self-elected exercises as discussed with the coach.

Years 11-12 will be provided with a program that is 50% structured, leaving 50% of the session to include exercises elected by the student as discussed with the coach.

Individual Student Programs: Exceptions to the program are made for students who are participating in state level or above external sporting programs where programs are provided by an accredited coach and/or if a student is undergoing any rehabilitation from an injury where documentation is provided from a physiotherapist.

Holiday Wrap Up

In the second week of school holidays we took a high performance squad to Berry for Pre-season Camp. This squad was made up of girls and boys 1sts and 2nds teams.

Our players took part in skills and drills and learnt their base structures for the season ahead. It was a great opportunity for our Senior players to hit the ground running to lead into a successful season. Players had time to get to know each other with a wide split of Year Groups forming out 1sts and 2nds teams. All involved made the most of their time together and we can’t wait to reap the rewards as we begin fixtures next weekend.

We came away with goals set, friendships made and personal skill development.

Pathways

If students wish to connect to pathways for Touch Football outside of schoo, please reach out. The School has strong connections with Norths Touch where students can get involved in representative teams and refereeing.

Junior Sport

Welcome back to all families and students I hope you and your family enjoyed the break. We resume our Representative Summer Sport Season from Term 1 with our interschool matches beginning this Saturday. Our Term 4 Summer Sports program for our Girls Rep Basketball season along with our Non-Representative Wednesday Sport program commenced this week in beautiful conditions.

Basketball singlets and Touch Football singlets have been distributed to those students who attended one of the four pick up opportunities throughout the week and these will appear as a hire charge on your Term 4 fees. Basketball shorts can be purchased from the School’s Uniform Shop.

At our start of term assembly, I reminded our students about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport. Students are asked to adhere to these;

  • Right place
  • Right time
  • Right equipment

It may be worth opening up some discussion on how these can be followed at home in preparation for Wednesday and Saturday sport. Hearing my mum or dad didn’t pack my towel for swimming” or “I don’t know what time my game is” is not what we are trying to instil in students as they prepare for Summer Sport.

Building students’ responsibility will make for a much more pleasant experience for all. If they ask you questions about their sport or one of our carnivals, direct them to the Sport page on Redlands Pulse or better still if they have their device, you can always share the link to the Redlands Navigation video so they can research what they are after.

Term 1 Summer Sport Nomination 2024

Information re nominations for Term 1 Summer Sport for 2024 was sent to all current Yr 2 -5 families in Week 9 last term. Families with students currently in Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 were asked to nominate their child’s 2024 Term 1 Sport selection choice, be it a Representative Sport or Non-Representative Sport. The association that we belong to for our Sport required this data in Week 1 of Term 4 so they can structure sport for the following season. For our Non-Representative Sport program, our external contractors also require this information to block in space based on the number of participants in each sport.

Information on the sports on offer for both our Representative and Non-Representative programs can be found on Pulse in the Sports Information booklet.
Please note that students who select a Term 1 Representative Sport for 2024 will continue that same sport in Term 4 as our competition is split into two sections

The Sport nomination process was;
(1) Thursday 17 September- nominations sent out via Pulse to all families
(2) Sunday 8 October- Registration link closed.
(3) Monday 9 October- Registration for late joining families to Redlands in 2024.
(4) Thursday 10 November 10pm -Registration process now complete. Summer Sport Representative and Non-Representative lists are now final for Term 1 2024

Thank you to all families who completed their child’s preference on time. For those families who had IT issues with their Pulse Login, please email pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au  to assist you

Sport Calendar

The updated sport calendar for Term 4 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2023 JS Sport Calendar

Redlands App – Communication

In Term 4, all Redlands Sport Activities will continue to be through Pulse and the Redlands App.  Here you will be able to see all activities, teams and groups your child is part of, all scheduled lessons and locations and receive instant push notifications for any changes or cancellations.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sports – Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport, only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit are to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Representative Sport Team Movement

In regard to representative sport and the movement of players across ability based teams, it is  transparent for all parties as unexplained team movements sometimes cause unnecessary stress. At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY – in direct comparison to other students across the sport

ATTENDANCE – any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE – this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Athletics All Schools

Congratulations to Jake O’Sullivan (Year 6) who represented Redlands in the school holidays running in the 100m event in the 2023 Athletics All Schools Carnival.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Have a great term.

Years 10-11 Cocurricular Drama Production – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Watch Trailer Here

Book Here

Our Years 10-11 Cocurricular Drama Production presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Term 4 at the Zenith Theatre at Chatswood, 1920’s style! A Midsummer Night’s Dream: the tale of Hermia, Demetrius, Lysander, and Helena; four misguided lovers who’s journey into the woods lands them in even more trouble, as members of the fairy kingdom decide to use them as veritable pawns in their own love games. Against the backdrop of the wedding of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta, and the fiery battle of wills between the Fairy King and Queen, Oberon and Titania, the four lovers are challenged by magic and trickery to finally work out what love is all about. We invite all to attend.

Year 9 Drama Showcase – Docudrama

Over the past term, Year 9 Drama students have been working on their performance assessment pieces for their current topic, Docudrama. Students have engaged with the conventions and techniques of Epic Theatre by using newspaper headlines and research into previous historic events to explore an event or issue of their choice. Exploring these performance forms demonstrates how our own true stories can be powerful and provocative material for performance work. The performance evenings will run over two nights, Monday 23 October and Tuesday 24 October in the Drama Studio. The performances will begin at 6.30pm, we warmly invite you to attend, there is no booking needed.

Congratulations to Mr Gray, Mr Montz and Mr Wooltorton for leading our students, and well done to all who performed so spectacularly!

Ensemble Attendance and Expectations

A reminder that weekly attendance at ensemble is essential for all students enrolled in cocurricular ensembles. Regular participation is essential for students’ musical growth and the success of our ensembles at important upcoming end-of-year events. We greatly appreciate the  support of our community to help our students all rehearsals until the end of term.

We also ask that all students ensure that they bring all required equipment (e.g. music & pencils) and are regularly practising their parts at home in the lead up to end of year events.

Upcoming Junior Curriculum Instrumental Performances

Term 4 is always an exciting time for our curriculum instrumentalists, as we aim towards our biggest performances of the year. Yr 2 and Yr 3 Strings are looking forward to performing in the Strings Concert, and Yr 4 and 5 students are busy preparing for the MIP Concert. In our lessons we have spoken about those pesky nerves that sometimes get in the way, and how we can help to overcome them by being well prepared and ready to perform. We encourage students to continue regular practice at home, and our tutors are always available to help with any tricky passages.

Please save the date for the following performances which will be open to parent and carer  visitors:

  • Yr 2 & 3 Strings: Strings Concert, Monday 6 Nov 2pm
  • Yr 4 & 5: MIP Concert, Thursday 9 Nov 2pm

Still to come this term!

A reminder to keep your eye on the MUSIC EVENTS page on Pulse, to stay keep up to speed with all the latest happenings in Music! We still have so many exciting Musical experiences to pack in this term!
