Issue 30 2022 Term 4 Week 1 - 13 Oct 2022

From The Principal

I trust that the recent term break provided an opportunity for you to spend time together with family and friends, while acknowledging that for Yr 12 parents, there would have been time focused on support and wellbeing in the lead up to the final examinations. Our HSC students have commenced positively this week, with the IB examinations not far away, and I am most grateful for the continued support and dedication of our Yr 12 teachers during this time.

During the break, along with other Redlands staff, I attended the Australian Council of Educational Leaders conference here in Sydney. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect in person with other leaders from both the schooling and tertiary sector. There were many significant presentations, with a highlight being Stan Grant’s closing address. He spoke with strength, emotion, raw honesty and deep integrity as he shared about his life growing up in various regional NSW towns and the impact of racism on his immediate family and his grandparents. It was a powerful, personal story of truth-telling.

Highly respected educational researcher, John Hattie, presented on recent research into positive mind frames that parents exhibit, which support their child’s learning and development. He has written a new book with his son that focuses on this topic. The 10 mind frames that he discussed are:

  1. I have appropriately high expectations
  2. I make reasonable demands and am highly responsive
  3. I am not alone
  4. I develop my child’s skill, will and sense of thrill
  5. I love learning
  6. I value the power of feedback and know that success thrives on errors
  7. I am a parent not a teacher
  8. I expose my child to language, language, language
  9. I appreciate that my child is not perfect, nor am I
  10. I am an evaluator of my impact

He spent some time focusing on Nos. 2 and 8, with key messages regarding the importance of listening and being responsive to what your child is communicating and the importance of reading to your child from an early age and exposing them to as much language as possible.

Tomorrow night, our alumni community will join together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of a number of Redlanders at our inaugural Redlander Alumni Awards Ceremony. We will be specifically recognising and presenting awards to five Alumni and five Young Alumni for their dedication, commitment and exceptional achievements in a very diverse range of endeavours. Next week I look forward to announcing the names of the ten very deserving winners of these inaugural awards.

Community Update

Welcome to Term 4.  We trust that you had the opportunity to enjoy some family time over the holiday period to rest and renew.

We recognise the vital role our wider community plays in the prosperity of Redlands and remain committed to providing opportunities for feedback on our performance. Thank you to those parents and carers who participated in our recent survey. We are currently working through the resulting data and look forward to sharing this with you as the term unfolds.

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community connected through the recent term break … despite more inclement weather! Something that won’t be affected by the weather is our Melbourne Cup Lunch. We have only a few seats left to this terrific event hosted at Sergeants’ Mess, overlooking Chowder Bay, on Tuesday 1 November. Bookings can be made here.

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association, Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) all continue to actively engage in bringing our various groups together. Head of Secondary School

Welcome back to Term 4

It has been a productive first week back to Term 4. Across the Secondary School, we have engaged in a range of events and activities designed to challenge and enable us to reflect.

Yr 11 Camp

Yr 11 have been enjoying their first outdoor camp since 2019, at our High Country Campus in Jindabyne. So far the weather has been beautiful, allowing for canoeing on Lake Jindabyne, cross country skiing, bushwalking, horse riding and mountain biking. In addition to their outdoor experiences each group is taking part in a leadership session. Led by the Year Advisors, this is to help prepare students for the coming twelve months and to recognise their role as student leaders when they return next week.

The camp culminates with a celebration dinner on Thursday evening – a fitting end to a wonderful experience. Thanks to all the staff in attendance, especially Year Advisors Nick Walker and Eleanor Martin, Head of Outdoor Education Eddy Atkins and Dean of Activities, Jon Gray.

Tuesday School Assembly

An assembly for Yr 7 to 10 was held in the gym on Tuesday to welcome students back to Term 4. We began with a prayer and then heard from Ms Jansons and Ms Rolon, who reinforced key messages for the students about the term and the role they would play this term, as Redlands students.

I spoke to the students about the importance of creating a positive learning environment on the Senior Campus and the following is an excerpt of my key messages to them:

“take responsibility for your words, your actions, how you come across to others, how they perceive you – what people hear you say- in the classroom, in the playground, travelling to and from external venues. Take responsibility for your possessions – your bags, your sport bags, your lunch boxes, your water bottles, your blazers – your learning artefacts.

You can also support the safety of our school by speaking up, stepping forward, demonstrating moral courage by articulating when something doesn’t feel right. Speak to your Tutor, your Year Advisor, a teacher, a coach or see Ms Jansons or me. Don’t ever accept ‘that’s the way things are..’ but instead challenge and question – we are all on a journey of continual improvement – we need to constantly get better and develop and grow and improve. Let’s not settle for adequate or ‘just enough’ but instead let’s expect the very best from each other and give the very best of ourselves to each other.

There are so many good things happening at Redlands and so many examples of students working hard to support each other and create safe spaces. Yr 11 students Maya and Josie have worked so hard to provide a safe space for girls in the bathrooms with complimentary sanitary products. Piper and Theo and then Jack and Sophia initiated a Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA), which many students have welcomed and found beneficial. Yr 9 are actively engaged in a Service project, stepping out and giving back to the wider community. Yr 11 students are supporting Yr 7 students, and Yr 7 are getting ready to support the incoming Yr 6. I could go on… so much good and joy and generosity is occurring each and every day.

At Redlands, we champion diversity, inclusivity, individuality and independence – creating a safe space to allow for this takes work but sadly, we are seeing some people jeopardising this culture. This term, things need to improve. Please play your part, and treat our spaces with respect and responsibility, so that every place and every space in this school is safe and welcoming to all who choose to inhabit it.

The ball is in your court, and this is a call to action. Be your best.”

Goal Setting for Term 4

This morning all students in the Secondary School met with their Tutor in period 1 and 2 to set habit goals for Term 4. It was wonderful to roam around the Senior Campus and hear the conversations that were taking place. Below are a couple of photos to illustrate the power of reflective and purposeful academic conversations.

The HSC Examinations

The first English Examination commenced on Wednesday morning. There was a real buzz on Level 4 of the Learning Hub as HSC students converged together after weeks of study. They came into school ready (and many of them were early!) to do their best and demonstrate what they have learnt from their hard work and revision. It was wonderful to see so many students approaching the first exam with positivity and confidence. They know to expect a curly question or two. They know how to unpack a NESA thesis and to tackle questions with a ‘can-do’ attitude. Rather than be scared of a question ‘attack it with gusto’ was our message. This takes confidence – which the students demonstrated in their very interesting and often hilarious readiness techniques prior to entering the English exam at 9.45am. Below is a picture of them ‘psyching themselves up’ and below that a more relaxed image taken by Dean of HSC, Ms Benjamin, after the exam had finished.

UN Youth 2022 Voice NSW Competition – from the Public Speaking Club

This Wednesday after school, a group of students who are part of the cocurricular Public Speaking Club had the opportunity to participate in the UN Youth 2022 Voice NSW Competition. The national competition is focused on providing students with an opportunity to voice their opinions and pitch their solutions to the most pressing global issues, and develop invaluable skills of critical reasoning, ideation, and oral presentation.

Prepared speeches were based on developing a feasible and creative solution for a chosen global issue, ranging from renewable energy use, to an ageing population, to ways to model residential spaces. Students were required to provide a strong solution that convinced the panel of UN judges on its feasibility, creativity and benefits. Following that, students were given 2 minutes to prepare an impromptu response based on two questions regarding their topic of choice. This part was particularly challenging, and it was interesting to see what others came up with in this limited amount of preparation and presentation time.

Through the competition, we saw a plethora of beautifully articulated and imaginative proposals composed by students from both the junior and senior divisions—it was a fun and rewarding experience for all of us involved. In addition, other students are strongly encouraged to join the Public Speaking Club, to further develop skills of critical thinking, creativity, professionalism and poise.

 –  Krishna Gupta, Jemima Hugman, Hiro Phillips, Elenor Blankenstein, and Sophie Yu

Ms Kang leads the students in these endeavours. Ten Redland students competed in the preliminary round of the UN Voice, where over 200 students from New South Wales participated. They each presented unique and persuasive ideas to solve real and present issues that affect our community, our country and our world.

Two Year 7 Redlands students competed in the Junior Division and eight Year 9 Redlands students competed in the Senior Division, demonstrating their critical reasoning, problem solving and presentation skills.

Redlands My TV – Exam Jitters

Setting a schedule is vitally important. Students need to schedule everything from sleeping and eating, to studying and exercising. It is one of the best ways to manage inevitable exam stress. Students need to look after themselves when they have big demands in their life.

When it comes to productive study, sometimes less is often more. It is recommended that students hit the books in 50-minute stints, broken up by 15-minute breaks. This gives the brain, and body, a rest. Adolescents will often underestimate the amount of sleep they need. Getting enough sleep is key to successful study practices. Research shows that physical activity also has a very positive impact on mental wellbeing. Eating well is another crucial factor to maintaining concentration and staying focussed on the task ahead.

Year 8

Welcome Back

This week we excitedly welcomed Yr 8 back to school for another busy Term. Term 4 will be a time for connection and growth – Year 8 will sit their Yearly Examinations and will round out their first stages of high school, preparing for next year where they will enter their middle years of Secondary School. This week students have again engaged in Coaching Conversations with their Tutors, setting targeted goals for their exam preparation, and also considering what areas they might challenge themselves to rise to this coming term and beyond. Focus areas for Yr 8 are self-management, academic achievement or cocurricular participation.

Year 7

Welcome back

Welcome to Term 4. I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing and restful holiday break and trust that the holidays were filled with quality family time, fun with friends and some much-needed later alarm clocks, or none at all!

It has been wonderful to welcome students back this week. Our cohort appeared refreshed with renewed focus and ready for learning as we prepare for Yearly Examinations.

Athletics

On Tuesday 20 September a number of Yr 7 students competed in the CIS Athletics Competition at Sydney Olympic Park. The following students achieved great results and we congratulate them for their efforts:

  • Nicholas Meagher – 3rd place in the 12 years Long Jump
  • Finn Gurney – 4th place in the 12 years 400m
  • Hugo Burton – 9th in the 13 years Shotput
  • Eva Simpson – 11th place in the 12 years Shotput

During the first weekend of the school holiday Alexander (Xan) Krazsewski Francia competed at the NSW All Schools Championships. He finished 13th in the 1500m and this was a wonderful result.

Science Club

At Redlands, we offer many opportunities for students to follow their interests and passions. Science Club offers students dynamic and interesting practical science opportunities. The photo below depicts Zoe Mckeown and Hugo Christy participating in the ‘nappy challenge’ as part of Science Club with Ms Carroll. The challenge involved an experiment to see how much superabsorbent polymer can be removed from a nappy and how much water can be absorbed.

Junior School

Term 4 Off and Running

It has been wonderful to have felt the energy of the campus return as we have started Term 4 in what promises to be an exciting term again. The dry weather has been welcomed and we look forward to the return of summer Representative Sport this weekend with no less than nineteen teams competing for Redlands across three sports. There are also a number of exciting events across the term as you would have noted in my Term 4 Welcome Letter last week and we look forward to our Year 6 students having a particularly memorable final term of primary schooling.

As is often the case at the start of term assembly, I reminded the students about living our School Values and in particular, highlighted the School Value of Responsibility. Students were able to highlight and share a number of ways in which they could live this value, both at school and at home and I would encourage families to consider building on this conversation.

Date Correction: Ballet and Dance Concert

This week, we have started a six-week Sustainable School Garden project led by ethnobotanist, David Harrington. David is on campus every Monday and will work alongside students to refurbish the existing vegetable garden, complete school wide biodiversity audits and turn the Allister Street garden area into a bush tucker/natural garden. Each Junior School class will have a one-hour session with David and explore our environment as outlined below.

In Yrs 3 and 4, each will do an audit of visible pollinators around the school using a pollinator check sheet and audit the school’s plantings for pollinator value. They will discuss species for pollinators and then plant appropriate species in the Allister St garden using bush regeneration techniques. A secondary goal will be to investigate and discuss what bush tucker species are already in the school and undertake further plantings of bush tucker species in the Allister St garden.

In Yrs 5 & 6, each class will work towards a goal to refurbish and renovate our existing garden area and build two new garden beds that are sustainable and self-watering, using recycled materials. Students will be part of an initial site assessment that will analyse the local garden microclimate using weather monitoring equipment, test the soil for pH, structure and organic material and calculate what materials are required to refurbish the existing beds. Classes will then have the opportunity to use tools and contribute to making the wicking beds and perform the necessary tasks to renovate the space.

I look forward to sharing photos of this project as we move through the term.

Transport for NSW School Travel Information

Transport NSW have passed on the following information for students and families who utilise school public transport to assist with student travel enquiries.

2023 School travel applications are now open. Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2023 can apply now. A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g., joint custody).

Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4.

This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year. School Opal card holders will have the changes applied to their existing card.

If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade (i.e., grade two to grade three), the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, Transport NSW will send an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2023.

Travel from Term 1 2023

We ask that parents plan ahead and make sure their child knows which service/s to use and has a valid a School Opal card or Child/Youth Opal card to travel from the start of the school year.

Applications for 2023 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel open at the start of Term 4 2022, so parents/students can apply or update details early and be ready for the start of the new school year.

Most students using the Opal network will not need a new Opal card and can continue travelling on their existing card each year. The start of the year is a busy period for local transport operators, and students travelling without a valid ticket make service planning and operations difficult.

We recognise that for some families last minute changes to school enrolments mean they may not have a School Opal card or Travel Pass for the start of term. In the Opal network, we strongly encourage these families to have their children travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

Bus operators are flexible and understanding, particularly at the start of the school year, and will ensure students can travel safely to and from school. But to best support our operators we encourage all students to have a valid ticket, as early as possible, from the start of the school year.

Students using School Opal cards are also reminded that they must tap on and tap off in line with the Student code of conduct and Opal terms of use.

Thank God it’s Wednesday: All are welcome to join this club. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about God, connect with others and do some fun crafting.

Move and Groove Dancing Club: All are welcome K-2, to come and get their boogie on. Students will have the opportunity to learn some new moves with Ms Saxby and they will even have the opportunity to learn to choreograph their own dances.

Little Artists: All are welcome K-2, to come and express themselves through a range of art mediums with Ms Haines. Students will be able to mindfully paint and draw in a calm and relaxing environment.

Rowing

Over the holidays the majority of our Rowing students took advantage of the optional holiday sessions with a combination of on water and land training on offer. We had students in single sculls on water sessions wherever possible to help develop their skills even further and to launch them into Term 4.

The senior program returned to Berry for its annual Sculling Rowing Camp. We have been unable to return to Berry for some time with bush fires and Covid related issues meaning that for many of our students this was their first time rowing at the venue.

The weather did not hold back with some wet and, at times, challenging sessions however the seniors displayed great resilience and trained well in all conditions. It was also great to see the three Year Groups (Yrs 9, 10 & 11) come together as a singular senior program lead by their respective captains Briar Carter (Yr 11) and Matt Fry (Yr 11).

Students completed a significant amount of workload on this camp including the legendary 12km single scull time trial coving the length of Boughton Creek. Congratulations to our top three place getters:

Girls

1st: Georgia Verschoor (Yr 11)
2nd: Caterina Croll (Yr 11)
3rd: Alana Mansfield (Yr 11)

Boys

1st: Finn Woodward (Yr 11)
2nd: Daniel Close (Yr 11)
3rd: Pat Walker (Yr 11)

Tennis

We hope you have had a good holiday despite the wet weather! Training has commenced on Tuesday and Thursday this week and will continue as per last term for all of Term 4. Please refer to the emailed training groups to see any changes, this information is also available on My Schedule on Redlands Pulse and remain the same as Term 3.

Competition for TNB and NSTA will start next weekend (22 October) so please keep an eye out for information regarding the draw and locations. The playing roster for the term has been released in preparation – please email the Tennis Administrator should you/your child need to make any switches.

We will be running a match play training session this weekend (15 October) for Group 1 and Group 2 students in preparation for next week’s start – please refer to your emails for details. We encourage all students to attend this training to brush up on their scoring and rules for both doubles and singles.

We look forward to seeing everyone start competition next week!

Please contact Ms Caitlin Wong should you have any questions regarding Summer Tennis.

Late changes to venues, times and staffing are shown in red font.

Term 1 Summer Sport Nomination 2023

Contacting Junior Sports Department

All relevant documents and information for Sport are available to you on the Junior Sport Pulse Page. Should you need to contact the sport department for anything you are unable to find on Pulse, the quickest response by us will be and preferred way is through email: juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Due to our sport/teaching/class commitments requiring us to be away from the office, we are unable to attend the phone at all times.

Right place, Right time, Right equipment

It is my aim for all Redlands Junior School Students to follow these three guidelines when they are playing sport, be it Representative Sport or Non-Representative Sport. In the processes I have put in place all digital documents that will assist you in achieving these three things.

Term 4 Summer Representative Sport

Representative Sport Team Lists

For weekly team selections please refer to the Term 4 Summer Sport team lists. These will be updated on Pulse following each fixture. Please remember that our Redlands Representative teams are fluid, meaning teams may change week to week depending on three main criteria: Ability, Attendance and Attitude. Any team movements will be discussed with your child by their coach. Given that we play in a graded competition, we aim to provide the most competitive team for that round. There may be times where your child is asked to also fill in on a second game when absences are high.

Representative Sport Absences

If your child is unable to attend a training session or Saturday fixture, please complete our Sports Absence form located on Pulse. This will allow Sports department staff and coaches to view prior and post fixtures and allow for another student to be contacted to fill in to make up numbers. As mentioned above, unexplained absences will affect your child’s gradings. As Representative Sport is not compulsory at Redlands, we expect all students who have committed to a team, commit to each game and training session for the duration of the season. Absences due to ‘club’ commitments are not permitted.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through a note requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Draw

The Term 4 Draw is available to view online. You can view it here and save to your phone/device- 2022 Term 4 Summer Draw. As it is live and subject to change, please do not print off the draw. We recommend checking back each Friday evening to ensure you have the correct time and venue for the following morning. There may be occasions where host schools change a time or location midweek and when this occurs the draw will be updated.

Friends of Music AGM | Tonight!

We are looking forward to welcoming our friends and supporters to the Edwards Auditorium on Senior Campus from 7pm for our Friends of Music Annual General Meeting. All interested members of our Redlands community are heartily invited to join us, and we would be delighted to see representation from all sections, as we dream for a wonderful 2023 and beyond in Redlands Music.

News about our News!

We’ve decided to explore a change of format within our weekly Music Note Day update. We hope to continue to develop the Junior and Senior Campus Pulse as the home for key departmental information and news updates as they happen across the term, so Note Day itself presents a wonderful opportunity to hear from ALL our Music Educators and Leaders across our P-12 department each week.

For the rest of 2022, we will trial our Music Note Day being divided into Curricular, Cocurricular & Extracurricular sections – with pertinent updates regarding Prep, Junior and Secondary Schools as relevant. We welcome feedback from our community on the readability and accessibility of this information, and I would like to thank our classroom teachers and departmental leaders in advance for their contributions from time to time.

Wishing our community a wonderful Week 2 to come!

Amy Richardson
Director of Music P-12

Years 7-10 Theory, Aural & Musicology Exam Support

In addition to support from your class teacher directly, a reminder that the Music Study Centre is open at 7.30am Monday & 3.30pm Friday each week to offer any additional help you may need as you prepare for your final assessments in Music.  We are cheering for all our students as they consolidate the big ideas they’ve been exploring in 2022 and wrap up this great year of learning ahead of the coming examination periods.

BAND & SMALL ENSEMBLE PROGRAMS

Manly Jazz

On the first weekend of holidays, the students of the Jazz Program came together to celebrate music at the Manly International Jazz Festival. Over the course of a somewhat rainy day, the members of the Stage bands, Jazz Combo and the Jazz Vocal Ensemble performed their favourite tunes to the public in one of the world’s great beaches.  This was Redlands’ first year of involvement at the Festival, and our second public performance since the lockdowns of the past few years. Thank you to the students and families for making this day possible.  We can’t wait until next year!
