Issue 30 2020 - 24 Sep 2020

From the Principal

I have been conscious that in my first year as Principal at Redlands, with our COVID-19 restrictions in place, I have missed out on some of the normal opportunities to connect with parents and carers at school events. To provide the opportunity for the broader School community to get a stronger sense of who I am and what is important to me, our Year 6 Junior School Leaders recently interviewed me. The questions they selected were thoughtful and insightful and I thoroughly enjoyed our discussion. Please click here to view the video.

As part of the process in appointing a new Deputy Principal, I took the opportunity to review the key responsibilities of the role. Through this process and my discussions with staff and parents, it became apparent that the School would benefit from having an additional Executive role, that provided strategic leadership for the community engagement functions of the School; Marketing and Communications, Development, Enrolment, Alumni, Events and Archives. We are now moving to advertise this new role of Head of Community Engagement this weekend, with the position planned to commence at the start of 2021. The position will provide direct support to the RPFA and will work closely with the President and RPFA Committee.

My sincere thanks to the RPFA team for their organisation of the recent Family Fun Trivia event, which created a wonderful connection for our families across all sections of the School and a great sense of fun and enjoyment. The RPFA also created a new online process to offer secondhand uniforms to over 100 Redlands families this term. The online sales have already generated over $5,000 for the means-tested Scholarship Fund. The team have worked creatively to enhance connection with our Redlands community during this challenging year.

We have enjoyed celebrating the last week of school for our Year 12 2020 cohort, through a range of fun events. I have been proud to see our students embrace the opportunity to enjoy themselves appropriately, whilst stopping to give thanks to the staff who have worked closely with them. On Tuesday they enjoyed a fun activity day at the Macquarie University playing fields, dressing up in creative costumes, competing on the giant inflatable obstacle course and slide, along with other games. The group shared lunch together on Wednesday and then enjoyed watching their Year 12 revue, followed by a moving assembly during which video messages of best wishes and support were shared. Not only were these from the staff and students, with guests even including the former Prime Minister Paul Keating! It was wonderful to have Emma Reid share a message on behalf of the Year 12 parents, with links provided for students to view the large number of messages from parents following the assembly. It was special to have several prominent alumni also wishing the students well. We now look forward to supporting our Year 12 students through their study period and examinations and celebrating with them in style at the Formal, Final Assembly and Valedictory evening after their examinations.

COVID-19 Update

Around lunchtime today, schools began receiving updated information about the relaxation of some restrictions going into Term 4. We are very heartened to hear this and as we have been doing all year, we will consider the implications of these in terms of our school community. We will be writing to all parents and carers before the end of the school holidays to advise the specific COVID-19 measures that will be in place for Term 4.

I wish all families a restful break over the school holiday period and look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Monday 12 October.

Foundation

Thank You to Our Volunteers

We would like to thank the RPFA President Michelle Tea and her team of volunteers for creating the new online processes enabling the RPFA to sell second hand uniforms to over100 Redlands families this term. The online sale has already generated over $5,000 for the means-tested Scholarship Fund.

Our goal is to provide the opportunity of a Redlands education to an exceptionally talented student by awarding another means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship to a Yr 7 student in 2022.

Fun Family Trivia Afternoon

Thank you to the RPFA Committee for organising an afternoon of laughs, competition but, most importantly, community spirit. Participants dressed in their House colours to win House points, connecting through quizzes, games and dancing. Congratulations to all the winners and participants who made this event a wonderful success!

“We, at the RPFA are always delighted to work closely with the School to enhance connection with our Redlands community. It was fabulous to contribute to the means-tested scholarship fund with the proceeds from the Uniform Sale. Thank you for your support and we hope both events were valuable to you.” Michelle Tea, RPFA President

Christmas Cards

This year Redlands will celebrate the Christmas spirit by showcasing the students’ creativity in a collection of Christmas cards featuring art from our Junior and Preparatory School students, whilst supporting Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker Appeal.

Submissions of Junior and Preparatory School students’ artworks (drawing, painting, mixed media and digital art) together with a short description of the image will close on Wednesday 14 October (Week 1, Term 4). Students can hand them to Class teachers or at the Prep School office.

Artworks themes to select from are:

  1. An Australian Christmas – bush, beach, BBQ, summer holidays
  2. Christian images – The Nativity, Baby Jesus, Three Wise Men
  3. My family Christmas– students depicting what Christmas looks like at their house/in their family/in their culture
  4. Favourite Christmas Meal/Cuisine/Treats

Ten artworks (either individual or group submissions) will be selected and featured in this year’s ‘Redlands Spirit of Christmas’ card set, available for purchase in early Term 4. Please join us to create a wonderful Christmas spirit for our broader community and win prizes!

RPFA

Message from the President

It was quite a big weekend for the RPFA with us holding two events we have never held before – the community Trivia Night and the online uniform sale. As with all events, it takes a village to bring these things to you so I would like to thank the RPFA volunteers for all the effort that went in. I would especially like to call out Jo Lloyd and Maria Kinsella for all their work on the Uniform Sale … going digital was a big thing! I would also like to thank Kathy and Carole from the Uniform Shop for all their help in making this possible.

Thank you for your support and we hope that both events were valuable to you.

The RPFA AGM will be held on Thursday 29 October at 6.00pm via this Zoom link.

Second Hand Uniform Sale

We at the RPFA are always delighted to be able to work closely with the School to enhance connection with our Redlands community and it was fabulous to be able to contribute to the means-tested scholarship with the proceeds of the Uniform Sale. We were able to ship 100 orders and made $5000 towards the Scholarship Fund.

Fun Family Trivia Afternoon

Over 80 Redlands families participated in our first ever socially distant community event – a Kahoot Trivia afternoon. Lots of fun was had by all. Congratulations to Cowper House for winning the overall competition and to everyone who made an effort with their awesome outfits and dancing!

Head of Secondary School

Yr 12 Celebratory Events

This week we have held a number of events to celebrate and recognise the achievements of our Yr 12 students as they come to the end of their Redlands journey. This year, some of these events have been altered due to COVID-19 restrictions and we will now be holding their Formal, their Final Secondary School Assembly and their Valedictory and Prize Giving Evening in the week after they complete their final HSC and IB Examinations. More specific information about these events will be sent to Yr 12 parents in the coming weeks.

However, this week has still been filled with some special events for the Class of 2020 to celebrate their achievements. On Monday we held our final Yr 12 Chapel Service where their Assistant Year Advisor, Ms Wilson, and our Chaplain, Ms Lihou, shared with them messages of hope and support. On Tuesday, instead of our usual Boat Cruise for Yr 12, we organised an Activities Day at the Macquarie University Sports Fields where the Yr 12 students could join their Tutors and other staff members in fun-filled games and activities in a relaxed atmosphere. Yesterday, we held a special assembly for Yr 12 students where they were able to view many different recorded messages of support and appreciation from staff and students across both campuses, as well as some outside messages of encouragement, too. Students also heard reflections from Mr Webber, Mr Atkins and me before they headed off to prepare for their final examinations over this break.

As I said to them in the assembly, I have been struck by how, as a Year Group, they have continued to rise to the many challenges they have faced this year with grace, determination and positivity. They have set an example of true leadership for the rest of the school community to follow. I also reminded them of three messages I shared with them a year ago at their Yr 11 camp which are even more pertinent for them now.

  1. Remember you are stronger now than you were twelve months ago because of the challenges and obstacles you have faced and overcome to get this far.
  2. Aim to live life with no regrets, both your school life by finishing strong these last few weeks, but also your life after Redlands.
  3. Remember you have the support of your extended family of classmates, staff, parents and loved ones, over these final few months of school and for many, many years to come.

It has been a true privilege working closely with the students from the Class of 2020 this year, and I wish them all the best in their lead up to the final HSC and IB Examinations next term.

Yr 12 2021 Leaders

As the Class of 2020 finish their time as school leaders at the end of this term, the Class of 2021 take on these leadership roles and responsibilities from the beginning of next term. Yesterday we informed Yr 11 students of their leadership positions for next year and we will announce these positions to the Secondary School community in a special assembly on our first day of Term 4 on Monday 12 October. We are very proud and excited by the leadership potential of all students in the Class of 2021 and look forward to seeing how they lead the School over the next year.

We also understand that there will be some current Yr 11 students who will be disappointed as they have been unsuccessful in attaining a desired leadership position. However, we are pleased to note that in the new leadership model for this next year, all students who have put their name forward to be considered for a Prefect position, will still be able to assume the duties and responsibilities of this leadership role from the beginning of Term 4. We are thrilled to see so many current Year 11 students express an interest in this role in the new leadership system, and we are pleased that all students will now have the opportunity to illustrate their leadership over their final year of schooling. The final Prefect confirmations will not take place until towards the end of Year 12.

We are confident that all students from the Class of 2021 will continue to conduct themselves as exemplary leaders, role models and ambassadors of Redlands over the next twelve months. We look forward to supporting and encouraging them as they fulfill these important responsibilities of a Year 12 student at Redlands.

Gala Arts

As mentioned in last week’s Note Day, while we were not permitted to have the usual Term 2 Gala Arts competition at the Concourse this year, last weekend we still had the finalists across the different disciplines competing for House honours at various venues around School. I would like to congratulate all students who made the finals of this annual prestigious arts and House competition, and we all look forward to viewing the final Gala Arts video when it becomes available early next term. I would also like to thank all of the staff for their efforts in making this event a reality within the current COVID-19 environment.

Debating

Last week our final Debating competition of the year came to a close. It has been an interesting season for our debaters as they have moved back and forth between virtual and live debates over these past six months. However, our Debating program is stronger than ever with increased participation across the Year Groups and successful results. A special congratulations to our two Yr 8 Debating teams who were runner-ups in the SDN Competition last Friday. I would like to thank Ms Simone Bryant for her leadership of the Debating program over these past four years which has seen it flourish. Ms Bryant will be stepping down from her role as Coordinator of Debating at the end of this year and we will announce a new Coordinator of Debating in due course.

Staffing Updates

We would like to take this opportunity to update you on some staffing changes that will come into effect from the beginning of Term 4. Firstly, we wish Ms Carolyn Shaw all the best as she begins her maternity leave at the end of this term and prepares for the birth of her first child. We are pleased to confirm that Ms Marita Jansons will be the acting Dean of Students during Ms Shaw’s maternity leave, and we are fortunate to have such an experienced Year Advisor able to step into this role. From the beginning of next term, we are also pleased to announce that Mr Nick Walker will be the Acting Yr 9 Year Advisor. Mr Walker has been the Assistant Year Advisor for the current Yr 11 Year Group in recent years and we will be confirming someone to step into this role early next term. In addition, please note that Mr Brad Horner has resigned towards the end of this term and we are currently working to cover his classes and Tutor Group in Term 4. We will also be advertising for an ongoing Science teacher to commence in the beginning of 2021. Furthermore, we would like to thank Ms Danielle Bunday for covering for Ms Elizabeth Scott in Science over the past term and we wish Ms Bunday well in her future pursuits. Finally, we would like to thank Mr Kevin Fenger for all of his contributions to the Innovative Design Department this year. Mr Fenger will be taking up a teaching position much closer to his home from the beginning of next term. We welcome Ms Angela Malek to Redlands in Term 4. Ms Malek is an experienced Computer Science and Innovative Design teacher who will be picking up many of Mr Fenger’s classes next term.

New PE Uniform

We are delighted to announce that we will be introducing an updated PE uniform from the start of Term 4 this year.

Feedback from the last Uniform survey identified a number of quality and styling issues with the current PE uniform which have been addressed with this updated uniform. The new uniform is made from UltraDry fabric which is super lightweight, breathable, moisture absorbent, quick drying and has UV protection. The styling reflects the school tracksuit and there are there are the following styling/fit options:

PE Tops: unisex and girls (available Term 4 2020)
PE Shorts: unisex long length (available Term 4 2020); unisex mid length (available Term 4 2020 in current fabric; Term 1 2021 in new fabric)

We request that from Term 4 2021, all students are in the new PE uniform – in the meantime, they may continue to wear their current PE uniform.

Black Dog Fundraiser

Redlanders Hugh Smylie, Elizabeth Lee, Jasmine Zhou and Lily Wickham from the Class of 2018 are taking part in an 80km walk on October 9 to raise money and awareness for mental health through the Black Dog Institute – an organisation dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating mental illness. Improving mental health has been a focus for the Secondary School over these past few years and it is great to see recent alumni continuing their commitment in this space. If you would like to make a donation to them in support of this worthy cause please follow this link.

Term 3 Holiday Wishes

It has been wonderful to observe the many and varied accomplishments of our students this term and to see them continue to flourish in many different pursuits, despite some of the challenges we have all faced. I hope they and you can enjoy some downtime over the break and we look forward to seeing the students returning to campus for the commencement of Term 4 on Monday 12 October.

Holiday Break

Best wishes to all Yr 11 students and families for a safe and happy mid semester break. Students are encouraged to find time for family, study, exercise and friends before the demands of Yr 12 begin. Please ensure that summer uniforms are checked for length as students will have grown over the winter months. As students will return as our school leaders and role models for our younger students, your assistance with uniform and haircuts is greatly appreciated.

Year 10

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of Term 3! What a busy term it has been with students, thankfully, being able to have all of their learning onsite. It has been so clear to see the importance of the social connections Yr 10 have in school. The sense of belonging and being accepted for who they are on a daily basis in their interactions with their friends at school, is something that many struggled without when the school was required to change to remote learning earlier in the year. There has been much research done to demonstrate the importance of these school social connections on the mental wellbeing of students, and this term it has been particularly noticeable how positive these friendships have been and how supportive the Yr 10s are of each other.

End of Year Examinations

As we are approaching the end of Term 3, Yr 10 should be beginning to consider their preparation for their end of year examinations in Week 3, Term 4. Students have been using this term to learn the importance of planning their schedule each week, through the use of a termly and weekly planner. It would be a good time to check-in with your child and have a conversation about exam preparation and how they are going to effectively use their upcoming holidays to not only enjoy themselves but also begin their revision process. This week Tutors have been assisting the students in their preparation.

Sporting Achievements

Congratulations goes to the following students who have made the 1sts team in their respective sports:

Basketball: Meera Coburn, Sasha Jansz, Julia Saunders, Ben Adamson, Nikola Barac, Zac Corneil, Joel Keith, Oliver Stephens

Touch Football: Louise Colin, Callie Forest, Sophie McMillan, Olivia Stonley, Katie Wightwick.

Prue Salter’s Study Tips

With the end of term fast approaching take the time these holidays to reflect on what is ahead in the last term.

  • Do you have exams?
  • Should you be making some study notes?
  • Are there areas of difficulty you should address?
  • What do you want to achieve both academically and personally?

Set some goals!

Tony and I wish you all a restful and safe holiday away from the busy school routine, and look forward to welcoming Yr 10 back on Monday 12 October in summer uniform.

Term 4 Week 4

Yr 9 Exams

The Yr 9 exam block kicks off in Term 4 Week 4. The holiday period is a fantastic opportunity to ensure study notes are up-to-date, ready for examinations in Term 4. Students should consider:

  • What exams do they have?
  • Should they be making some study notes?
  • Are there areas of difficulty they should address?
  • What do they want to achieve both academically and personally?

Set some goals!

The Study Skills Handbook (UN: redlands | PW: 68results) has useful resources on Active Studying and Preparing for Exam Blocks (starting with the summary sheets is always useful). The Redlands Study Centre is also a useful resource (the timetable can be found on Redlands Pulse).

Summer Uniform

All students are expected to arrive on day one of Term 4 in full summer uniform. Many of our students have again had growth spurts and need hem and pant length adjustments. There will be a uniform check on day one – this includes hair. We also encourage all students to have their blazer and tie cleaned before the start of the new term. Uniform requirements can be found in the Student Planner.

Term 3 Assessment Reflection

Term 3 was a heavy and more complex assessment period. Redlands attempts to coordinate the timing of Assessment tasks and students are required to submit their tasks on the due date. Many students thrived during this time, one student outlining that ‘I managed well because I started the bigger tasks earlier and regularly reviewed progress’. Others found this term to be overwhelming, experiencing increased stress, fatigue and sometimes relationship conflict. This week, students reflected on successes, challenges and lessons learnt. Key points included:

  • The importance of time management
  • Useful time management tools (personal discipline, diary, term planner, revised schedules)
  • Strategies for managing feelings of being overwhelmed

To support conversations at home, key tips and strategies can be found HERE (UN: redlands | PW: 68results).

Yr 9 Pastoral Team Staffing Update

Many of you may have read in Note Day that from Term 4 our current Dean of Students, Ms Carolyn Shaw, will be heading off on Maternity Leave. Ms Shaw has been an incredible support to Redlands and Yr 9, and we send her our warmest wishes as she embarks on this new and exciting journey. We look forward to welcoming her back in 2021. During this time, I will be stepping into the role of Acting Dean of Students; Mr Nick Walker will be Acting Yr 9 Advisor, supported by Ms Eleanor Martin. Mr Walker is the current Assistant Year Advisor to Yr 11 and has a wealth of experience in the pastoral sphere at Redlands. This week, Mr Walker joined us for our Year Meeting and shared his excitement towards working with this fabulous Year Group. I will sincerely miss directly supporting Yr 9, however, I am confident that they will be in very capable hands.

Pastoral Care Program – Solving Conflict and Positive Self-Talk

Yr 9 can be a year of change especially in relationships which can sometimes result in tension between peers. The word ‘conflict’ carries a negative connotation in our minds, and is primarily associated with emotions such as anger, frustration and sadness. However, when managed appropriately, conflicts can become opportunities to make something better. Whatever the outcome, conflict is a natural part of life and socially intelligent people are often highly skilled at solving problems without fighting. Pastoral Care activities this week aimed to have students develop productive ways to solve problems and practise reframing negative thoughts and interactions through positive self-talk.

Parent Viewing: The Social Dilemma

Social media is a way for teenagers to stay in touch with their friends. Teens have always talked after school, long before social media – hanging out at the bus stop, at the local park, chatting on the phone – now they just have a different platform to do so. Social media is an important part of socialising and connection in the modern world. However, there is another side to social media. The Netflix docudrama, The Social Dilemma, explores how addiction and privacy breaches are features, not bugs, of social media platforms and features tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations. Whilst recommended viewing for parents, the documentary would be more suitable for students in Yrs 11-12. Concerned about your child’s social media use? The eSafety Commissioner offers some useful resources including Taming the Technology and Privacy and Your Child.

News and Achievements

  • This term, Yr 9 welcomed Lachlan Dekker (Singapore) and Maddie Boris (USA) to our cohort. In Term 4, Loch Wilding (Singapore) and Ava Fenton (UAE) will also be joining Yr 9.
  • Congratulations to Emilie Bessel and Oliver Kesby for both earning a position on the 2020 Girls and Boys Basketball 1sts teams.
  • Redlands students recently competed in the 2020 ICAS Science Competition. Congratulations to the following students on their exceptional results: Lucinda Baird (High Distinction), Liam Franklin (Distinction) and Jack Forrest (High Distinction).

A Final Note

I would like to thank you for your support during another full term. Our Yr 9 students are hitting all of the adolescent milestones. Being able to work as a community to guide student development is essential in supporting our young people as they develop into the best versions of themselves. We wish you and your family a happy, safe and restful holiday period and we look forward to welcoming students back in Term 4.

Netflix Documentary – The Social Dilemma

With students in Secondary School being more infatuated than ever with social media and peer approval on a much larger scale than in years past, it is not a surprise that we might have come to be in this situation due to the very platforms used daily in society. While these platforms may have had extremely positive intent from the outset in the early 2000’s and 2010’s, we are finding the various impacts of these platforms and devices to be quite confronting more each day.

Netflix has put out a new documentary titled, The Social Dilemma, with fascinating interviews from the creators and top executives themselves speaking about their various creations, the research that was conducted to build these companies and the moral debate around whether these platforms are doing more harm than good.

This documentary was brought to my attention by a parent in our community. While it is rated PG-13, it may not be appropriate for students at this age as the topics are quite heavy. I am, however, including it in Note Day as a suggestion for all parents and carers to watch over this term break as it is educational, thought-provoking, confronting and empowering. It brings to light many areas of concern around social media.

Wishing all families a restful and restorative term break!

Inappropriate Content Online

A message from Brett Lee, Co-founder of InternetSafeEducation.com

Inappropriate content can reach young people through many different platforms. We need to remain active and vigilant in monitoring what young people are exposed to in their online world, which is very much their real world. Inappropriate content can reach students on any platform, including but not limited to websites, social media sites or video content sharing sites.  Common sites used by children include: Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and YouTube for Kids. It is especially important that parents and carers now need to be especially vigilant. If you do come across any inappropriate content, report and flag immediately. Advice is to report to the platform (eg TikTok) and to the eSafety Commission. Consider using monitoring software to manage time online, apps being accessed and to also filter inappropriate websites. Finally – and most importantly – make sure to talk to the children in your care about the things they are doing online. Communication is by far the best defence against these modern trends of inappropriate content sharing. Create an environment of openness about technology and discuss it regularly.

The eSafety commission has developed a series of tips for parents to help limit young people’s exposure to harmful content online:

  • Engage in your child’s online activities – ask what apps, sites and games they’re using and make sure they’re age appropriate
  • Use parental controls on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to
  • Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps
  • Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online

Head to esafety.gov.au to find out the latest advice on apps, social media and online safety issues

Lastly, you have a right to manage technology at home, which includes temporarily removing access – ‘Your house, your rules’.

Pastoral Program

With the end of term fast approaching, students should take the time these holidays to reflect on what is ahead in the last term.

  • Do you have exams?
  • Should you be making some study notes?
  • Are there areas of difficulty you should address?
  • What do you want to achieve both academically and personally?

Set some goals!

The focus of our program for the remainder of this term and into Term 4 will be on the Prue Salter Study Skills, namely, how to study for tests and examinations.

A Picture Paints a Thousand Words

Sometimes a photo can capture a moment in time far better than words alone so I thought that I would share a few photos of this unique time that we are in below as we look back and reflect on a wonderful Term 3, the first term of the year that we have been fortunate enough to have spent on campus all term.

The new normal

Day 1, Term 3: The one and only time we were able to gather as a whole Junior School, albeit for 15 minutes!

Virtual and socially distant staff meetings

Camp comes to Redlands

The new normal way to greet or congratulate someone

A new event to promote House spirit and to keep active

If we can’t play sport against other schools, we’ll play each other!

A QR code to enter the campus

I am grateful to all in our community for the support, flexibility and dignified strength as we have sought to continue to provide our students with rich learning experiences and important social connection opportunities. Today’s last day of a range of fun activities has been an important acknowledgment of the role that the students have also played and their resilience and sense of school spirit and connection has been palpable.

I wish all in our school community a restful and rejuvenating break and we look forward to welcoming the students back for the start of Term 4 on Monday 12 October, in summer uniform.

Debating News

Congratulations to our Yr 5 Primary B team Debating team who competed in last Friday’s Sydney Debating Network Grand Finals. The students adapted well to the mid-competition shift to Zoom debates and it was wonderful for me to join the Yr 6 Debating team, Mrs Sharp and Ms Wynne, as we watched the final together from another classroom evening. The team debated with great skill and thought but unfortunately, on this occasion, came second. The group should be very proud of what they have achieved and well done to their coach and the students: Sam Ashby, Caroline Brown, Alex Heller, Chloe Petering, Kernel He and George McIntosh.

Staffing Update

In the absence of being able to have the usual interactions with our families, Mrs Kourakis has this short video message for our community as she leaves us this term. As we farewell both Mrs Kourakis and Mrs Luck, we are delighted to welcome Mrs Kate-Louise Clinton as our new Dean of Students P-6 and Mrs Amy Richardson as the Acting Assistant Coordinator of Music.

Both Mrs Clinton and Mrs Richardson take up these leadership roles from the start of Term 4 and we look forward to their contributions to our School community and I know that you will join me in warmly welcoming them.

Principal Interview by Junior School Leaders

Last Friday, our Junior School Leaders took the opportunity to interview our Principal Mr Webber in the Arnold Library. The students came up with some very insightful questions and you can see our leaders in action and learn more about Mr Webber and what is important to him here.

The Kids Cancer Project and Bear Cottage Fundraiser

There is something deeply moving about children helping children so it was wonderful for us to be able to support both Bear Cottage and The Kids’ Cancer Project last Friday and there was a wonderful sense of togetherness amongst the students. Congratulations and thank you to Yr 6 students: Stella Cunningham, Milayna Guha, Zoe Hicks, Mia Kwintner and Arkie Riches, who planned, organised and counted through the day and we were thrilled to have raised a total of $2737.45 for the charities.

Yr 5 Robotics Challenge

It was great to see our Yr 5 students take part in a robotics challenge to end their term’s study. The students wrote a self-drive code which enabled EV3 robots to successfully navigate terrain with no human intervention. After several cycles of iteration, students tested their code on an unknown obstacle course in the Makerspace.  At the end, the students reflected on what worked, what didn’t and how we could adjust the code in future iterations.

Yr 4 Gallery Walk

It was lovely to spend time in our Yr 4 classes yesterday as the students shared their inquiry learning in the form of a Gallery Walk with the other Yr 4 classes and teachers. Whilst unable to invite parents in to join this learning celebration, it was wonderful for the students to take home their School iPad for the evening and go through their presentations with their families at home.

PE Tops: unisex and girls
PE Shorts: unisex

The new PE uniforms will be available for purchase from the Uniform Shop at the start of Term 4.

We request that from Term 4 2021, all students are in the new PE uniform – in the meantime, they may continue to wear their current PE uniform.

Lost Property Items

Whilst we have been able to repatriate a lot of lost property this week, we still have a range of clothing and lunch boxes in our lost property area. In the absence of parents being able to come on site to check this area, if your child is missing a specific item, Mrs Fairfax has kindly offered to see if we have it if you contact her directly via email.

Fun Family Trivia Afternoon

Congratulations to our Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) and others involved in last Sunday’s online Family Trivia afternoon which was a great success. The community really appreciated the work of the RPFA in setting this up and I know that many of our Junior School families earned both House points and prizes during the quiz. Well done to the following Junior School student prize winners: Henry Marlin (Yr 3); Leo Campbell, Mia Cragun and Ellie To (all Yr 4); Hugo Burton, Amelie Dewar and Tara Ward (all Yr 5).

Redlands Spirit of Christmas Card Competition

We are delighted to announce that Redlands will be celebrate the Christmas spirit by showcasing our students’ creativity through a range of Christmas cards featuring art from our talented Junior and Preparatory School students. Connected to this initiative, we are thrilled that this competition will  support the Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker Appeal, a wonderful cause that Redlands has had a longstanding association with.

Submissions of student artworks which can be a drawing, painting, mixed media or digital art, together with a short description of the image, will close on Wednesday 14 October (Week 1, Term 4).

All Junior School students should hand entries in directly to Mrs Fairfax in the Junior School Office.

Artworks should showcase what Christmas means to our students and select their inspiration from the following themes:

  1. An Australian Christmas – bush, beach, BBQ, summer holidays
  2. Christian images – The nativity, baby Jesus, three wise Kings
  3. My family Christmas – students depicting what Christmas looks like at their house/in their family/in their culture
  4. Favourite Christmas meal/food/snack

Ten artworks will then be selected and featured in this year’s Redlands Spirit of Christmas card set which will be available for our School community to purchase in Term 4. Please join us to create some Christmas spirit for our broader community!

Please be aware that Prep afternoon Football will commence Monday, Week 1, Term 4.

Clubs will also start from Week 1, Term 4.

Prep Games Day and an Afternoon of Connection

Our Prep students showed up in a splash of their House colours with a spring in their step and bursting with enthusiasm this morning. Prep Sports Games Day had arrived and we were ready for a day of fun and connection with friend, staff and our Yr 6 helpers. Girls and boys ran their hearts out in races and participated in a wide variety of other activities. It was a fun morning and provided all students with wonderful opportunities to enjoy some healthy competition, team work and ability to take a risk and have a go. Having our Yr 6 friends join us to assist in the running of the events provided a special connection that we have been missing this year. A big thank you to all the students and staff who helped make this day such a success. A special thanks to Mrs Dongas who ensured the day was jam packed full of fun and exciting challenges and events for the students.

Staff Updates

We farewell two very important and highly valued staff members from the Junior Campus this week. Mrs Hillary Luck and Mrs Sam Kourakis. They both have both been at Redlands for quite a long time between them and have achieved extraordinary things in the Music Department and as Dean of Students. They both will be very much missed and we wish them well as they begin their new journeys at Abbotsleigh and the AIS.

Due to COVID restrictions, Sam has been unable to see families on campus so she said her goodbyes to Redlands families through this message.

We are thrilled to confirm the appointment of Mrs Amy Richardson to the Term 4 role of Acting Assistant Coordinator of Music, whilst we seek to fill the role for 2021. Amy is an established and valuable member of the Music team and well-known to many students and staff on our campus through her involvement in a range of primary musical offerings. Amy will be meeting with Hillary this week to ensure a sound handover takes place. I know that you will join me in welcoming Amy to the Junior Campus and support her in this role for Term 4, arguably one of the busiest in the musical calendar…….normally!

New PE Uniform

We are delighted to announce that we will be introducing an updated PE uniform for Prep School students from the start of Term 4.

Feedback from the last Uniform survey identified a number of quality and styling issues with the current PE uniform, especially the quality of the yellow polo shirts, which have been addressed with the updated uniform. The new uniform is made from UltraDry fabric which is super lightweight, breathable, moisture absorbent, quick drying and has UV protection. The styling reflects the school tracksuit and there are the following styling/fit options:

PE tops – unisex and girls
PE shorts – unisex

Please note that the skort for girls did not require updating.

The new PE uniforms will be available for purchase from the Uniform Shop at the start of Term 4.

We request that from the beginning of Term 4 2021, all students are in the new PE uniform – in the meantime, students may continue to wear their current PE uniform.

Book Week Junior Campus Celebrations

Due to Covid-19, Children’s Book Week, which usually occurs in August, was postponed to the second week of Term 4, 1923 October. We are lucky to be able to celebrate this special week by having a visit from two authors on Tuesday 20 October and a K-6 Character Dress-up Day on Thursday 22 October. The theme for Book Week this year is Curious Creatures; Wild Minds and in Library classes this term students have been exploring books that exemplify this theme. When discussing with your child what they would like to dress up as, ask them about what ‘curious’ means and think about being a strange creature eg. a tapir, a bunyip, an armadillo, a blobfish, or someone who has a ‘wild mind’ like Albert Einstein, Picasso, Salvador Dali, Frida  Kahlo. Alternatively your child might like to choose a book character that s/he thinks is ‘curious’ or ‘wild’. We look forward to this fun activity where we will join with our Yrs 3-6 friends.

Redlands Spirit of Christmas Card

This year Redlands will be celebrate the Christmas spirit by showcasing the students’ creativity in a range of Christmas Cards featuring art from our talented Junior and Prep School students and sharing the joy with those in need. Submissions of artworks, which can be drawing, painting, mixed media and digital art together with a short description of the image, will close on Wednesday 14 October (Week 1, Term 4). Students can hand them to Class teachers or at the Prep School Office.

Artworks are to showcase what Christmas means to our students selecting from the following themes:

  1. An Australian Christmas – bush, beach, BBQ, summer holidays
  2. Christian images – The nativity, baby Jesus, three wise men
  3. My family Christmas– students depicting what Christmas looks like at their house/in their family/in their culture
  4. Favourite Christmas meal/food/snack

Ten artworks (either individual or group submissions) will be selected and featured in this year’s Redlands Spirit of Christmas card set which will be available to purchase in Term 4. Please join us to create wonderful Christmas spirit for our broader community!

The staff highly value and greatly appreciate your ongoing support and contributions to our Preschool program. I encourage you to continue to provide us with your feedback regarding day-to-day Preschool life, events or activities. It is this feedback that contributes to our Quality Improvement Plan and helps us to navigate through change when necessary. Wednesday Lunch Orders for Seniors

As part of our school readiness program, the Redlands House Senior classes can order their lunch from the Canteen on a Wednesday during Term 4. Ordering is done via the Flexischools website. Flexischools is a well-established organisation allowing you to easily place all your canteen orders online at any time. As you can imagine not all items available at the Canteen are suitable to be transported to the Preschool. For this reason, we have a limited menu available. Please ensure all online orders are completed before the 9.00am daily cut-off.

Kindergarten and Transition Gold Orientation Day

On Wednesday 14 and 21 October students moving to Kindergarten or Transition Gold in 2021 at Redlands will be attending their Orientation Day. The day will commence as usual with a regular drop before 9am. The children will be accompanied to the Kindergarten rooms by the Redlands House staff. The children will have the opportunity to explore the classrooms and playground before returning to the Preschool for morning tea.

Students who are leaving Redlands at the conclusion of 2020 will remain at Redlands House on this day and participate in a variety of experiences and activities.

Redlands Sports Staff Leading the Way

Congratulations to Mr Jack Gooding, Director of Coaching – Rugby and Athetlic Development, who was awarded his Level 3 World Rugby certificate. This required an intensive week long course in New Zealand working with some of the best coaches from around the world, followed by several months of assessment and game anaylsis. Jack relished the course and the insights he learnt on game play and game sense development in athletes of all abiilities. Jack is one of only a handful of coaches in Australia who have this level of qualification.

Congratulations to Ms Kate Seebohm and her North Sydney Bears team (at top of page) who won the Basketball NSW Waratah League Div 1 Women’s Grand Final. Kate was the Captain and was also awarded the 2020 Defensive Player of the Year, the All-Star point guard and the finals series MVP. This is the second time in four years the Bears have won the championship and the fourth consecutive time Kate has been awarded the defensive player of the year. The team also comprised of our Director of Basketball Coaching Ms Renae Camino who only recently returned from injury and showed great determination and resilience to take the court along with two other members of our coaching staff, Ms Gina Volos and Ms Abigail Curtain.

It is fantastic to see our Redlands Sports staff continuing to role model the benefits and opportunities available within sport. Role modelling is a vital ingredient to the success and growth of Redlands students, it is imperative that our students “see it to be it!”

Congratulations to both Mr Jack Gooding and Ms Kate Seebohm.

Fitness Centre

Throughout the spring holiday period the Redlands Fitness Centre will again be running a range of sessions for students to take part in.

These sessions will focus on speed, power and strength and will be applicable to all girls and boys taking part in any summer Rep Sport. These sessions will be a great way to build the physical fitness components required for all sports.

Sessions will run across the first week of the holidays and will be split between Seniors (Yr 9-11) and Juniors (Yr 7-8).

Register here. For any questions please contact Mr Jack Gooding.

Tennis

During the upcoming school holidays there are a number of opportunities for students to play tennis. Our coaching provider Grand Slam Tennis are offering a Tennis Camp on Wednesday 7, Thursday 8 and Friday 9 October. Students currently in Groups 1 and 2 should register for the High Performance Camp and students currently in Groups 3 and 4 should register for the Development Camp. It is a great opportunity to participate in extended training sessions focusing on fitness, technical skills, tactical awareness and footwork through high intensity drills and match and point play.

Our Summer Tennis competition organisation, NSTA, are hosting a UTR event on Saturday 4 October for Tennis players who fall into the U14 age group only. Interested students are encouraged to register for the NSTA UTR event . Please note, this is not a school event but will be great opportunity to play competitive Tennis against other Tennis players of similar ability.

Just a reminder, all illness and injuries are to be communicated via email to Eliza Peirce. Please do not attend trainings if unwell.

Cross Country

Our annual Junior School Cross Country Carnival took place at Cammeray Golf Club during the week. In the last of our big three carnivals, there was much excitement leading up to the first event especially on a new course with more hills and turns. It was pristine conditions with the sun shining and beautiful lush grass, with special thanks to Layton and his staff at Cammeray Golf Club for providing such well-manicured facilities.

Due to COVID regulations this year, we held events in separate grades which allowed for students to get in, run, get out, minimising sitting around in the sun and disrupting class times. The seeding based on results achieved in the Beep Test in PE lessons into Championship Race and Fun Run allowed everyone to receive a time and run the same course. We will likely repeat this model for future years. There were some incredible results and tight finishes and, most of all, lots of smiles and fun. We had over 200 students qualify for the Championship Course with the remaining students competing in the Fun Run event.

In lieu of parents and spectators not being able to attend, click here to view a video of the event.

The below results are from the Championship Races and were presented their ribbons and trophies on Monday’s assembly. Congratulations to Finn Gurney (U10) closely followed by Daniel Gordon (U11) on running the fastest time on the day. Gala Arts

All Captains, comperes and competitors met last weekend to film their performances for Gala Arts. These spectacular performances will be adjudicated shortly via video and the results announced in Term 4. The final video will then be made available for viewing by family and friends. All students involved are to be congratulated for the way they adapted to the online format, preparation and final performance. All the students and staff involved made a wonderful contribution and special thanks must go to the Redlands Production team and our amazing AV technician Ben Peate for their tireless support and attention to detail over the two days of filming.

Roles

Not all roles in the show are available as some 2020 cast members will remain in their current role. The following roles are available for audition:

DANNY ZUKO – The leader of the Burger Palace Boys; good-looking, strong and confident, with an air of easy-going charm.

BETTY RIZZO – Leader of the Pink Ladies; tough, sarcastic and outspoken, but vulnerable.

MARTY – The ‘beauty’ of the Pink Ladies; pretty and looks older than the other girls, but betrays her real age when she opens her mouth. She tries to act sophisticated.

JAN – Funny, loud, compulsive eater and awkward member of the Pink Ladies. Loud and pushy with the girls, but shy with boys.

DOODY – The youngest of the guys; small, boyish and open, with a disarming smile and hero-worshiping attitude towards the other guys. He also plays the guitar.

SONNY LaTIERRI – A member of the Burger Palace Boys; funny Italian-American, he is a braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he’s a real lady-killer.

ROGER – The anything-for-a-laugh stocky type of boy; a clown who enjoys winding people up, he is full of mischief and is always dreaming up half-baked schemes and ideas.

VINCE FONTAINE – A typical ‘teen audience’ disc jockey; slick, egotistical and fast-talking. He is also a veteran “Greaser.”

CHA CHA, a.k.a. Charlene DiGregorio – The best dancer at St. Bernadette’s; a loud mouth, she wins the dancing competition with Danny. This role will require a dance audition video uploaded.

JOHNNY CASINO – All-American, rock-star “greaser” student at Rydell High, whose real name is Clarence.

MISS LYNCH – A no-nonsense, serious, loud, English teacher.

TEEN ANGEL – An additional vocal role with the song “Beauty School Dropout” – could be male or female
