Valedictory Dinner

The 2018 Valedictory Dinner was a stunning evening, celebrating the success of Yr 12, as they transition from students to Redlanders. We wish Yr 12 all the very best in their upcoming examinations.

We look forward to welcoming this successful cohort back to Redlands in the future, to celebrate their one year reunion in early 2020. We will be in touch in the future to organise your Class reunions but in the meantime, please keep in touch via email alumni@redlands.nsw.edu.au and the Redlands Alumni Facebook page and Redlands LinkedIn.

Legacy Gift

The Year 12 Legacy Gift of Class 2018 has been announced as a Composting Unit and Sustainable Garden for the New Learning Hub roof. This will be installed later in 2019 when the building has been completed. For more information click here.

We would like to congratulate Yr 12 for their efforts in conducting a series of ambitious and successful fundraising activities which raised $2,000. A special thank you to Elizabeth Lee and the Legacy Gift team for their time and energy this year.

“The time I spent working alongside Redlands Alumni Manager, Caroline Jane, and the Legacy Gift team was absolutely incredible; I thoroughly enjoyed being a member of an initiative which would allow the Class of 2018 to give the gift of a sustainable garden to a school which has given so much to us, in terms of academic, sporting, and, most importantly, personal development”. From the Deputy Principal

We have farewelled the Class of 2018 throughout this week, commencing with the Year 12 Final Chapel Service on Monday morning and concluding with their Prize Giving and Valedictory Dinner last night. They have been exceptional leaders during the past year and have left their legacy to the School, both in their leadership of the student body and in their Legacy Gift of a sustainable garden and composting unit for the rooftop of the New Learning Hub. One of the highlights of the week was the two guards of honour on both campuses following the Year 12 Final Assembly yesterday. The air was filled with loud cheering and applause as Preparatory, Junior and Secondary School students said farewell to the Class of 2018, as you can see in the videos below. We wish the students all the very best in their final examinations and the next stage of their educational journey and we welcome them to our Redlanders Alumni community.

Congratulations to the seven students who have been nominated for HSC Showcases in Music and Dance for their Year 12 major works. Stella Everett and Charlotte Everingham have both been nominated for ENCORE, the HSC Music Showcase, and Marcella East, Stella Everett, Emma Green, Alexandra Jackson and Samantha Menzel have received a total of 13 nominations for Callback, the HSC Dance Showcase. They join the four students we acknowledged in Note Day a couple of weeks ago who received HSC Drama nominations for OnSTAGE. Congratulations to all students on this recognition of your exceptional work.

On Tuesday this week, our Preparatory School students put our school motto into practice as they used their talents and skills to make a difference in the lives of others. Make a Difference Day saw the students writing uplifting notes, drawing pictures and making paper gifts for those older people in nursing homes who rarely receive visitors or mail. Thank you to the students and to Junior Campus Chaplain Fiona McKenzie for your thoughtful consideration of others in our community.

During the holiday period we have two groups of students heading overseas for Service Learning and Language Immersion excursions. Nineteen Year 9 students are headed to Fiji, where they will stay with local families and undertake renovation projects in their village, and a group of Year 9-11 students will spend a week in New Caledonia, developing their fluency in French and learning more about French culture. We wish all students a wonderful time during their overseas adventures and look forward to hearing about their learnings when they return.

Volunteer Thank You RSVP by Monday 8 October

We are very much looking forward to showing our appreciation to all parents who have volunteered at Redlands this year, to be held on Thursday 18 October at 6.30pm in the John Roberts Centre. Head of Secondary School

Class of 2018

Over the past week we have had a number of activities to farewell our Yr 12 students, including their Farewell Chapel Service and morning tea on Monday, their harbour cruise and beach day Tuesday, their Final Assembly on Wednesday and of course their Prize Giving and Valedictory dinner last night. It has been wonderful to see this Year Group enjoy their last week at school with each other and the larger community. One highlight for me was a new initiative this year where, on Monday afternoon, we invited our graduating Yr 12s who started in the Prep or Junior Schools to return to the Junior Campus for a “pilgrimage” to visit classes. While I believe the Kindergarten and Yr 6 students enjoyed the visits by the “big boys and girls”, I know it was a special afternoon for all Yr 12 students who had the opportunity to return to where their Redlands journeys began.

It has been a special week for a wonderful Year Group and there have been many people here at school who have put forth a tremendous effort in the organisation of these activities. To all of them, I express my thanks. I would also like extend my deep appreciation towards Mr Castelli, as Year Advisor, and Ms Boase, as Assistant Year Advisor, for all of their support for Yr 12 this week and this year. I firmly believe that we have an exceptional Pastoral support team of Tutors, Year Advisors, teachers and Counsellors for all of our students at Redlands, and I know this has certainly been the case with Yr 12 over their time at school.

Many lovely words, thoughts and feelings have been shared by parents, teachers, staff and students about this Year Group. My sentiments towards the Class of 2018 can probably be best summed in an excerpt from the speech I gave at their Farewell Assembly yesterday.

“Today is a special occasion as we, the Secondary School community, farewell this wonderful Year Group. They have been exemplary leaders for our school over the past year, leading by example without asking for fanfare or seeking recognition.

This selflessness could be seen regularly, whether it was when the Arts Captains spent the whole day at the Musical auditions in Term 4 just to lend support to younger students who might be nervous auditioning; or when a number of 1st XI Boys Football players travelled to Oakhill to cheer on the 13As Boys Football team in their Semi Final match; or when over the half of the Year Group recently braved a chilly Sunday morning to participate in the 10km Blackmores Run to raise money for headspace and awareness for mental illness.

They have been a cohesive Year Group, sharing a laugh with each other at House competition days or a hug and a shoulder to cry on during their toughest times.

And they have certainly been a successful Year Group, whether it has been on the stage, the sporting fields or in the classroom.

In so many ways they have left a legacy at Redlands for the rest of the student body to live up to.

So, I would like to share a brief story with you, the Class of 2018, that I heard from a Tongan minister when I visited that country a few years ago, which I think captures the essence of leaving a legacy.

A very old man was walking along the side of a road with a bag of avocado seeds, planting them every now and then as he walked. A young man saw this and stopped him to ask, “Why are you bothering to plant those avocado seeds at your age? You are going to be too old to be able to ever eat the fruit that is harvested from those trees”.

The old man replied, “Because I have enjoyed eating avocados my whole life, and someone else planted those seeds before me, knowing that other people would enjoy their fruit one day.”

You, the Class of 2018, are a wonderful example of what it means to build and leave a legacy. And the legacy you leave has so many different forms.

There are the tangible legacies you are leaving the school such as your Legacy Gift of sustainable gardens which will add to the aesthetics and the sustainability of the new outdoor space to be created adjacent to the New Learning Hub next year, even though you won’t be at school to enjoy this space, or the Yr 12 mural that you painted outside of the Canteen which has brought colour and beauty to an otherwise drab hoarding wall – if only for a year.

However, even more powerful are the intangible legacies you leave us through memories. Whether it is Bailey’s artmaking, Hugh’s acting, Cara’s dancing, Jeroen’s drumming or Stella’s singing. Or whether it is Zach’s running, Anna’s swimming, Tim’s tackling or Jemma’s netballing. Or whether it is Kat’s recycling, Nono’s giving, Matt’s rapping or Nat’s “flossing”, you have left your legacy through the seeds you have planted and the paths you have forged so that others might follow.

At the celebratory dinner at the end of your Yr 11 camp in Term 4 last year, when I spoke to you of leadership and the year ahead, I asked that you build on the legacy of the 130 Yr 12 classes who have come before you at Redlands and as the All Blacks say, “leave the jersey in a better place”. Well, I can certainly say that “you have left it better than you found it” and for that we are all thankful.

So, to you, the Class of 2018, I ask you now, what legacy will you continue to build and leave for others after you walk out of the gates of Redlands for the final time?

Will you speak out against those who discriminate others because of their race, gender or sexuality?

Will you live a life that is not dictated by self-interests, but instead on how you can serve others and the larger community?

Will you be a good son or daughter; brother or sister; father or mother?

While you have certainly left your positive legacy here at Redlands, I am confident that you will also leave a positive legacy for countless others in the future.

So, to the students in Yrs 7 to 11, I want you to look at these Yr 12s in front of you, think of the legacies they have left during their time at Redlands, and ask yourself, what will your own legacy be when you leave the School?

And, to the Class of 2018, on behalf of all of us here today, I want to thank you for the legacies you have left us. While your journey at Redlands may be coming to a close, the next stage of your journey is just beginning.

I encourage you, like the old man in my earlier story, to continue planting your avocado seeds long after you leave school so that so that the fruit you will leave behind can continue to be enjoyed by others far into the future. “

Staffing Update

To maintain proper communication, I wanted to inform you of some staffing updates for Term 4. Our counsellor, Ms Lara Luitingh, commenced her maternity leave last week and we are fortunate to have Tanya Luangsangthong join the Pastoral team as our School Counsellor. Ms Luangsangthong has experience working with adolescents as a Counsellor in schools and other organisations and has most recently been working as a School Counsellor at Santa Sabina College. She has had a three week handover period with Ms Luitingh to ensure a smooth transition. We also thank Mr David Newling (HSIE) and Ms Sarah Simpson (Science) for their contributions to Redlands this term, covering the Long Service Leaves of Ms Emma Bergin and Ms Elizabeth Scott respectively. We also thank Mr Atkins and Ms Privett for their roles as acting Year Advisor and Assistant Year Advisor, respectively, for Yr 10 this past term. Next term, Ms Joy Daley and Mr Yuji Okawa will go on Long Service Leave and we are pleased to have Ms Alyssha Clarke and Ms Mai Takamura joining the School in Term 4. Ms Clarke joins us from MLC School while Ms Takamura has had experience in a number of government schools, including Murray Farm Public School and North Sydney Girls’ High School. Finally, Mr Argyris Giantsis leaves us at the end of this term to return to Sydney Boys’ High School in Term 4. We thank him for his contributions to Redlands over the past two terms. We are pleased to have experienced IB Latin teacher, Dr Astrid Seele, joining the school in Term 4 to cover these Latin classes.

End of Term 3

It has been a very busy term and I know that teachers and students are looking forward to a well-earned break. I hope that you are able to spend some quality family time over the next few weeks. I will send a letter in the second week of the holidays in preparation for Term 4, and I look forward to seeing the students return to school refreshed and ready for their final term on Monday 15 October.

Debating

Congratulations to Sophia Maxwell and Lauren Zhang who were awarded Spirit of Debating awards last week.

Madeleine Howard, Aleisha Lawrence, Sirena Scotting and Samuel Cook competed in the Finals of the SDN Competition on Friday. The team spoke beautifully and used every argument that they could as they debated against “That the Australian government should withdraw all funding to private schools.” The audience felt that it was a very close debate. The adjudication thought that even though they had some excellent “gems” of argument, they came too late in the debate.

What stood out to me during the debate was that even though the opposition took to personal attack, and in a couple of cases belittled our team during their arguments, our team did not stoop to that level and kept their comments about the issue. This makes the Redlands team winners in my eyes, but unfortunately not the actual winners.

Lily Wickham was present at the event and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all the tireless work as Captain of Debating this year. She has been fantastic and embodied the spirit of Debating. I wish her and all our Yr 12 students all the best for their imminent HSC and IB examinations.

All The Best

It has been an absolute privilege to work with all of you towards the end of this challenging and rewarding journey. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Yr 12 Tutors, Ms Vale and Ms Boase for their energy, compassion and care of our students. I would also like to thank all Yr 12 parents for their ongoing support and communication throughout. The Secondary School Parent Contact Group would like to thank Sara McAllister, Sofia Brisson and Marianne Urth for their great work as the Yr 12 parent representatives this year. We’d like to thank them for giving up their time so freely to support the Yr 12 parents. Best wishes to Sara, Sofia and Marianne and all the Yr 12 students as the exam season approaches.

Final Chapel

Thank you to Secondary School Chaplain, Bronwyn Lihou, for our Final Chapel Service on Monday. It was wonderful to hear our student reflections, the expression in their musical performances and the overall message of kindness and empathy.

Pilgrimage

On Monday, some Yr 12 students made the pilgrimage back to the Junior Campus. Students who had attended Redlands House or the Preparatory School visited Kindergarten classrooms to take part in their reading, construction and gymnastics classes. Yr 12 students who had attended the Junior School visited Yr 6 classrooms to reflect on their transition to high school and answer their questions. It was a beautiful experience to hear the students reminiscing as they walked over and to see their excitement as they reconnected with their former teachers.

Breakfast Cruise

In typical form, Yr 12 celebrated their final school day with gratitude and fun. We started with a breakfast cruise on the harbour as students let their hair down and caught their breath. This was followed by relaxation and games at Balmoral Beach. Many members of the public asked us which school they came from and commented on the polite and respectful way they celebrated throughout the day.

Final Assembly

Our final School Assembly was a powerful event as our Arts, Sports and School Captains gave moving speeches to inspire our younger years. All students and teachers can’t thank Yr 12 enough for their openness and honesty during this assembly. They stood up to show the challenges they encountered throughout their schooling in a bid to let students know that their character that was forged through these challenges and that no matter what they’re going through – they are never alone.

Valedictory

Thank you to Events Manager, Melanie Hendra, for coordinating a superb finale. The warmth and positivity throughout the night was the perfect representation of the cohesion and strength of the most incredible Year Group of all time. We wish Yr 12 all the best in their future and hope to hear from them as they work their way through their next adventure.

He was impressed to see the Yr 9s not only shredding up the Spring snow at Thredbo, but also putting effort into their class work in the afternoon lessons and using the prep time wisely to complete Assessment Tasks. In between lessons and prep time, Mr Walker enjoyed watching the Yr 9 students washing and cleaning up after breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hopefully they can take these new skills home after Winter School ends this week!

Youth Leading the World (YLTW)

Students in Yr 8 are invited to participate in OzGREEN’s Youth Leading the World inspiring annual youth sustainability congress on 26 and 27 November. This year the North Sydney congress will be part of a global YLTW focus week and connect with other congresses in Asia and the Americas. Now in its sixth year at North Sydney, non-profit organisation OzGREEN runs the congress in cooperation with North Sydney Council. The congress aims to inform and inspire high school students to actively work on making their families, schools and communities more sustainable. Students will engage in all 4Cs – Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication. YLTW provides an opportunity for students to step up and show leadership on issues they are passionate about.

  • 2 day Congress: 26 and 27 November, 9.00am – 3.30pm;
AND Community Forum (one week later): 3 December, 6.00-8.00pm
  • Location: The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability, Waverton
  • Some congress hours and ongoing work on resulting project can count towards volunteering requirements for Duke of Ed.

Students seeking more information on this event should email Ms Shorter and express their interest in participating.

Yr 8 Yearly Examinations

In the lead up to formal examinations, some parents may be seeking strategies and resources to assist their child in coping with stress and mitigating procrastination. Redlands subscribes to Dr Prue Salter’s website which has numerous resources available to assist students with study and examinations. It is very normal for students to feel “stressed” in the lead up to exams. I let our students know that this is a normal reaction and it shows that they care and are invested in the process. However, if your child is not able to manage this stress and they are experiencing anxiety, or adverse symptoms such as sleeplessness or diminished appetite, please be in touch so that we can assist with providing the appropriate support.

With regards to addressing stress, Dr Salter suggests the following strategy

  1. FACE YOUR FEARS
Look for and recognise the causes and symptoms. Write down all the things that are troubling you or bothering you.
  2. SPLIT YOUR LIST IN TWO
Look at your list. Some of the things you can change and do something about, others you can’t.
  3. TAKE ACTION
If there are actions you can take to help reduce the stressful situation, make a decision to take them! Decide to do something positive about your stress – you are in control.

Procrastination is something that can be an issue for students and parents alike. Many students struggle to get started on a task, be that an assessment or an assignment or study. Some students find that setting targets of work to do and rewarding themselves for these targets can be helpful. Dr Salter provides a module on combatting procrastination on her website.

Parents and students can access the Study Skills Handbook at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au

As you’re aware, examinations will be held in Week 3, Term 4. The examination timetable is now available on Redlands Pulse and iLearn. All subjects will make a study guide available on iLearn for students to access. Most are already available. Please contact your son/daughter’s teacher for individual inquiries. Please note – all Sports trainings are on as usual during examinations. Students are encouraged to ensure their study notes are up-to-date through the holidays and engage in some revision.

During Pastoral Care, students have been exploring active studying, summarising and preparing for examinations. In Week 1, Term 4 we will examine test taking technique. Students have access to resources on iLearn. Parents can find supporting information on the Study Skills Handbook (username: redlands | password: 68results).

Yr 7 Pastoral Care Team

I would like to thank Mr Newling for his care and support of Cowper Blue in Term 3. Mr Newling joined Redlands as a Long Service Leave appointment with the History Department. As a Yr 7 Tutor, he settled into our team quickly and developed a wonderful relationship with his Tutees. We wish Mr Newling the best of luck in his future journey. In Term 4, Mr Okawa will be taking Long Service Leave, Ms Mai Takamura will be looking after Cowper Yellow during this time. We look forward to working with Ms Takamura through Term 4 and welcoming Mr Okawa back in 2019.

Summer Uniform

All students are expected to arrive on day 1 of Term 4 in full summer (fitting) uniform. Many of our students have had growth spurts and need hem length adjustments. There will be a uniform check on day 1 – this includes hair. We also encourage all students to have their blazer and tie cleaned before the start of the new term. Uniform requirements can be found in the Student Planner.

Baby Gwenyth Clements

We were delighted to hear of the safe arrival of baby Gwenyth Snooks Clements, a first child for Yr 3 teacher, Leila Snooks, and her husband, Shaun. Both Leila and Gwenyth are doing very well after Gwenyth’s safe arrival last Wednesday evening and they are all now at home and enjoying this precious time together as a family of three.

National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Results

Parents of students in Yrs 3 and 5 would have received your child’s NAPLAN results for 2018 via post this week, as well as an email from our Head of Teaching and Learning, Dr Burgess.

These assessments are sat by all students in Australia in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 and the individual student report shows information including how your child performed in relation to other students in their particular Year Group here at Redlands, and in comparison to the national average score for each of the Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy tests.

As teachers, there is always a degree of frustration on our part that the results of this diagnostic assessment come four and a half months after the students sat the assessments in mid-May but nevertheless, class teachers as well as other academic leaders are starting to evaluate individual and Year Group results, which have been encouraging again.

If you have any questions regarding your child’s NAPLAN results, please contact your child’s class teacher in the first instance.

Farewell and Thank You, Yr 12

In this past week, there have been a number of opportunities for the School community to acknowledge and celebrate the final days of our Yr 12 cohort, many of whom a number of Junior School teachers and I remember with great fondness from their time with us many years ago. From Captains’ breakfasts, to visits back to Prep and Junior classes, to their final assembly yesterday, we have been able to observe and take pride in the fine young people that they have turned into who will continue to make a difference in the world with the values and character that are simply part of who they are. Growing good people is very important for us at Redlands and in my 13 years now at Redlands, this has been a constant that I have seen in our departing students.

After a beautifully-poignant final assembly yesterday, our traditional student guard of honour took place again with every student from Preschool to Yr 6 involved in high-fiving and applauding our departing graduates as they snaked their way up through the Campus. Many of the Yr 12 students were moved to tears by this touching acknowledgement and appreciation of them and this was then mirrored as they returned to the Senior Campus with Yrs 7-11 showing equal appreciation of Yr 12s’ student leadership this year.

The teaching profession is an incredibly privileged one and to witness students grow from young children into Redlands graduates is both humbling and inspiring in equal measures. In some ways, it doesn’t seem that long ago that these Yr 12 students were part of the Junior Campus guard of honour for the Yr 12 graduates of 2012 and as a number of Junior School students mentioned to me, one day that will also be them. All the best, Yr 12, 2018.

National Football Championships

Last week, Sports Captain and Yr 6 student, Jasmine Black, competed for New South Wales in the National Schools Football Championships, held this year in Sydney. As the goalkeeper for New South Wales, Jasmine played well across the whole week, conceding only three goals in the tournament as New South Wales played exceptionally well to finish as silver medallists, narrowly behind Queensland. Head of Sport, Mr Carter, and I were able to watch one of Jasmine’s matches which was also watched by the Australian Women’s Football National Head Coach, Alen Stajcic. We were impressed with both the standard of play and Jasmine’s role in the team as goalkeeper. For Jasmine, the opportunity to be part of a tournament of this stature ranked alongside the opportunity to see the time as a week of friendship building with new team mates and players from across the country. This level of achievement in a very competitive sport is recognised and we congratulate Jasmine on this level of success.

Jump Rope for Heart

Despite the rain, Wednesday saw our planned Jump Off Day enjoyed by all Junior School students with skipping-based games and activities arranged for the students by the visiting Jump Rope team. This concluded a term of support for the Heart Foundation and I am thrilled to share that Redlands is currently top of the leaderboard of fundraising schools in Australia with a staggering $45,045 raised as of today. Fundraising will still be active during the holiday period if you wish to continue donating. In Term 4, as a reward for their hard efforts to fundraise, the Junior School students will get the opportunity to meet a gold medal road cyclist, Chloe Hosking. Thank you to students, families and other supporters who have collectively contributed to this charity and to Yr 1 teacher, Mrs Chipper, who has coordinated the Junior Campus event throughout the term with amazing energy and organisation.

Appreciation

This has been another highly productive and action-packed term and I wish students and families an important rest in this next fortnight and also thank everyone for their contribution in supporting a memorable Term 3. We look forward to welcoming students back to School on Monday 15 October in summer uniform and, as was the case in Term 1, blazers are an optional item of uniform in the summer but will be required for some formal occasions such as Speech Day. Have a restful and rejuvenating break.

Yr 2 Camp

Learning is partly a matter of skills, but it is also about disposition, resilience, risk taking, self-belief, resourcefulness and the ability to reflect upon your own learning and plan a way forward. Expanding a student’s capacity to learn so that they can thrive in the world beyond the classroom walls is a significant part of the Outdoor Curriculum programs offered at Redlands. These experiences within the natural and social surroundings provide varying contexts in which positive connections are made – with self, others and the environment. As their first experience on School Camp and for some, the first time away from parents, all students (and parents) are to be congratulated for their courage and positive outlook as they undertook this experience. It was a privilege to spend the two days with the students and teachers in the beautiful surroundings of the National Park, as they discovered new-found abilities such as building shelters, rafting and damper making. Collaboration and teamwork were essential for students to reach their end goal. It was lovely to welcome Mr Latimer, Yr 3 Coordinator, to Camp, taking this opportunity to familiarise himself with the cohort as part of the transition program in preparation for next year. Through written prose, students in Yr 2 have shared significant reflections about their time at Camp, taking great pride in their accomplishments. A sincere thank you to Mrs Sharp for the many hours of organisation before and during Camp, to Mrs Simes for looking after the students who required medication or first aid with such care, and to the dedicated Preparatory staff who supervised the students whilst away from home.

Make a Difference Day

On Tuesday, students, staff and families were encouraged to use their creativity, thoughtfulness, energy and kindness to make a difference to the lives of others by writing a note, creating a picture or making a paper gift for someone.  Thanks to Junior Campus Chaplain, Ms McKenzie, these acts of kindness made their way to Pastoral Care personnel at local nursing homes for residents who rarely receive visitors or mail.

Prep Games Day

We invite all families to join us for the annual Preparatory Games Day being held on Friday 28 September. All students from Kindergarten to Yr 2 will be involved in running and field events on the Junior Campus Oval. Students are all expected to wear their Sports uniform and sunscreen and a hat are essential as we are expecting warm weather. Parents may take their child home at the end of the Games Day. We do ask however, that you sign your child out at Prep Reception before leaving the School. Staff will be supervising any students remaining after Prep Games Day until the end of the day. After School Care will be operating as normal.

The Yr 12 Legacy

On Wednesday, the entire Junior Campus, Preschool through to Yr 6, said a heartfelt goodbye to the Seniors of 2018 in a Guard of Honour that began outside Dunnet Hall and stretched across the Campus. Together, the staff and students stood together and cheered as the Yr 12s walked through the man-made tunnel of students, some crying, some laughing but most with enormous smiles on their faces. I had the privilege of attending the final Yr 12 Assembly prior to this, where the various Captains of the School so eloquently celebrated and reflected on their time at Redlands. The reoccurring theme from the students who said their final good-byes was the “never give up” approach to learning and life. They reiterated that they may have made mistakes, failed from time to time and didn’t win on the sports field, but it was in these failures where they were taught the greatest lessons in life – to persevere, stay true to themselves and continue to strive for their goals. They all agreed that the multitude of opportunities offered at Redlands and the connections they made with teachers and friends, are the memories that they will take with them through life.

Jump Off Day

On Wednesday, we held our Jump Off day for Jump Rope for Heart. The students participated in a variety of skipping and jumping activities, including long ropes, double dutch, skipping tricks, a skipping relay and hula hoop jumping. A very big thank you to all of those who have helped to fundraise. Redlands have currently raised $45,045 for this very worthy cause and are now the highest fundraising school nationwide. As a reward for all their efforts, Cycling gold medallist Chloe Hosking will be visiting the School next term. Fundraising will still be active during the holiday period if you wish to donate. The students are hoping to achieve their fundraising goal of $70,000 in order to have a disco during lunch time with a DJ.

Vacation Care

The OOSH Department, led by Ms Lytham, have some wonderful activities in the upcoming school holidays for students in Kindergarten to Yr 6.  If you would like your child to attend the October Vacation Care period, please visit the Care Bookings website and enter the booking code which is WF9JG.

Staffing

Mrs Jo Wise will be leaving Redlands at the end of this term after two years of dedicated service as the Early Childhood School Counsellor. We wish her well and continued happiness as she looks forward to spending more time with her young family. The Junior Campus Counselling team of Mrs Sam Kourakis and Mrs Shelly Acland will be overseeing the student counselling needs in Term 4. Mrs Victoria Roberts, Prep Teacher/Librarian, will be taking a well-deserved, long service leave break next term and we are delighted to welcome Mrs Penny Guha to work alongside Mrs Bertinshaw in the Lucy Hill Library.

End of Term

After a busy Term 3, I extend my sincere thanks to all in our community who have contributed to the growth and development of the Preparatory School. In my experience, Term 3 is one that potentially can serve as the biggest growth period for students and therefore may be demanding and tiring for some. Please take time to rest and rejuvenate these holidays before the whirlwind of Term 4 is upon us. For those travelling over the school holiday break, I wish you safe travels and we look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Monday 15 October in their summer uniform.

Transition Gold/Redlands House

The Transition class have been very busy this term using a variety of resources to explore mathematical concepts. Introducing numeracy concepts in early education pays dividends for a child’s school readiness and future learning. At Redlands House we use structured play-based learning and intentional teaching opportunities to introduce children to these early maths concepts. This learning enables children to develop an understanding of the notion of time and measurement, cause and effect, identification of number patterns, and the recognition of regular and irregular shapes.

Happy Holidays

It has been another fast-paced, stimulating and fun-filled term for the students of Redlands House. The staff highly value and greatly appreciate your ongoing support and contributions to our Preschool program. I encourage you to continue to provide us with your feedback regarding day-to-day preschool life, events or activities. It is this feedback that contributes to our Quality Improvement Plan and helps us to navigate through change when necessary. Please email Mrs Huon or please feel free to come in for a chat at any time. The Redlands House staff wish all of you a relaxing and happy holiday break and we look forward to seeing you next term, for our final term of the year.

Athletics

On Tuesday, Redlands had 27 students represent ISA at the NSWCIS Athletics Carnival. This was a great achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of all our athletes throughout the 2018 season. We want to make special note about two athletes from Tuesdays Carnival, Alex York (Yr 10) and Leo Colin (Yr 10).

Alex competed in five events on the day and broke the 15 Years Girls Triple Jump record with a PB of 12.08m, Alex also took out the 15 Years Girls High Jump and Long Jump; she finished 3rd in the 200m and 4th in the 100m. This is a tremendous result and Alex should be extremely proud of her results.

Leo Colin finished 3rd in the 16 Years Boys 800m, however it was his efforts after the race I would like to make mention of. At the NSWCIS Carnival, there were a number of para-athlete events which encouraged all levels of different disabilities to compete. After Leo’s 800m race, he was asked by a blind para athlete from St Luke’s Grammar School to assist him with his warm down, and Leo, without hesitation and with willingness, assisted this blind athlete with a few cool down laps, holding onto a rope so the blind athlete could follow his footsteps. This was an incredible act of great sportsmanship, kindness and compassion shown by Leo.

Some other highlights from the NSWCIS Carnival included:

  • Jasmine Chubb (Yr 11) finished 3rd in both the 17 Years Girls 100m Hurdles and High Jump
  • Emma Mahon (Yr 9) finished 2nd in the 15 Years Girls 3000m and 3rd in the 15 Girls 800m
  • Gus Miller (Yr 9) finished 3rd in the 15 Years Boys High Jump
  • Ellis Teudt (Yr 11) ran a blistering 11.15s to take out the 17 Years Boys 100m
  • Our Senior Boys Relay (Michael Moore Yr 12, Ellis Teudt Yr 11, Gabe O’Sullivan Yr 12, Cameron Pascoe Yr 11) ran a quick 45.08 to finish in 2nd place (0.08 seconds behind 1st).

We have a number of students who will be taking part in the NSW All School Athletics Championships from Thursday 27 – Sunday 30 September. We wish all these athletes the best of luck!

A final massive thank you to Mr Nick Walker and all the coaches from the Mosman Athletics Club for their help and support this season. This has been an incredible Athletics season for Redlands with a number of students running, jumping and throwing personal bests!

Basketball

Congratulations to the following students for their selection into either the Basketball NSW State Performance program, or the Developing Athletes Program for their respective age groups:

Junior Sport

Thanks to everyone who nominated Redlands in the Coles Sport for Schools program, a huge range of gear has arrived and will be put to great use across the PE and sports departments starting next term.

The Term 4 Sport schedule has almost been finalised and we are just waiting on fixtures for our Girls Basketball teams. The draw will be available on Redlads Pulse as soon as it’s finalised, definitely before Term 4 begins.

Team selections are getting very close – we will name teams via email during Week 1 of Term 4, we’re going to need the extra Wednesday session next term to really nail down the correct team selections. It’s also great to remember around this team selection time that teams aren’t forever. We work really hard to give everyone a fair chance to showcase their skills and have them graded correctly. The most important part for us, and entering teams into the IPSHA competition, is that kids are playing in teams with and against players of a similar skill level, in healthy good natured competition.

Holiday Basketball Clinics

Basketballers can attend school holiday skills clinics which are slated for 8, 9 and 10 October. Check in with juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au for details.
