Issue 3 2019 - 14 Feb 2019

From the Principal

This week we were delighted to celebrate the exceptional academic results of the Class of 2018 at our Academic Achievers Celebration Assembly with the Top 20 HSC and Top 20 IB Achievers, their parents, teachers and Years 11 and 12. It was thrilling to celebrate over 30% of the cohort attaining an ATAR of 95 or more and 56% an ATAR of 90 or more, the latter a record percentage in the past 20 years.

I note that many of the 2018 scholars were very much engaged in the broader aspects of school life, with some also achieving highly in their extracurricular areas. This extracurricular engagement was echoed by Redlanders Hugh Smylie and Katherine Stuart in the advice they gave to Years 11 and 12 during the Assembly.

It was also very pleasing to learn about the Tertiary Education Scholarships that have been awarded to some of our Top Achievers:

  • Jemma Donoghue: recipient of a Scholar Chancellor’s Award from the University of Sydney
  • Marvin Ma and Liam Woolsey: recipients of UNSW Coop Scholarships, which provide three internships in addition to a financial award
  • Hunter Riddle: recipient of the University of Wollongong’s Global Leaders Development Program Scholarship, enabling international study in Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai as well as three paid internships
  • Katherine Stuart: recipient of two scholarships from the University of Tasmania to study Marine Biology
  • Leila El-Dada: recipient of an Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship from the University of Glasgow.

As the Class of 2018 moves forward to explore the world of life after school, we wish them every success and further happiness in the coming years, and look forward to hearing of their special achievements in the future.

Academic Achievement Assembly

On Monday we held our Academic Achievers Assembly where we recognised the top 20 HSC and top 20 IB students from the Class of 2018 with parents, staff, guests and the current Yr 11 and 12 students in attendance. It is important to note that we are proud of all of our graduates from last year’s class: the countless personal bests; the many individual stories of overcoming challenges to earn success; and the remarkable achievement of 56% of the class earning an ATAR over 90. However, in my speech on the day I wanted to make mention of one special quality that I saw in last year’s class on which I elaborate in this extract below.

“Now, I know many of you are aware that businesses, institutions and organisations worldwide are increasingly becoming interested in analysing data – and schools are no different. There are many exciting possibilities that data analysis opens up to schools; however, data cannot measure everything and sometimes, focusing solely on numbers can cause organisations to lose sight of either the big picture or the individual.

Many schools use data to attempt to predict what the final HSC or IB marks will be for a graduating class of students. They might look at external tests such as Allwell, NAPLAN scores, or internal assessments and marks. However, in my 20 plus years in education, I have observed another quality which can’t be measured by data analysis that is to me as strong an indicator as any that a Year Group will achieve their own “personal bests”.

It is the sense of collegiality, positive peer pressure and support that is evident within that group of students. Last week, I told our current Yr 11 and Yr 12 students in their respective information evenings that this quality was an important collective strategy for their success in their last year or two of schooling.

Class of 2018 students, I remember chatting to your Year Advisor, Mr Castelli, when you were in the middle of Yr 11 and he told me you were a “special Year Group” because you had this spirit of camaraderie and cohesion. And while it helped you through the tough times, it also shone through on so many other occasions. I remember seeing it in the shared joy of your whole Year Group dancing together from the moment you entered the ballroom of your formal, or in the collaboration you exhibited in painting your Yr 12 mural outside of the Canteen or in your show of solidarity wearing pink and running, walking or skipping through the Blackmores 10km Running Festival.

So, to the Yr 11 and Yr 12 students seated in here today, I hope you can learn from the Class of 2018 and not limit yourselves with measurements such as data and numbers and instead see that by working with one another and supporting each other throughout your final years of schooling, you too can achieve your “personal bests” to open up amazing opportunities for yourselves after school.”

Cyber Safety

This Tuesday was our first Prefect assembly of the year and with Safer Internet Day on 5 February, the Prefects wanted to focus the assembly around our safe, responsible and productive use of technology. The Prefects picked up on Dr Lennox’s message from his opening assembly speech of “Looking Up” and encouraged students to both physically and metaphorically “Look Up”. One on hand, they asked students to look up from phones and devices more in their lives and take the time to interact with people and extend a warm, personal greeting when they meet others. They encouraged students to start trying to do this at the front and back gates when they enter or leave school, and already we are seeing a positive impact. However, they also stressed the metaphorical importance of looking up, of exhibiting an optimistic, positive and joyful outlook on life instead of being mired in cynicism or judgement.

Ms Shaw also spoke to the students about the importance of cyber safety and shared with them some information from the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. Specifically, she shared the “four Rs” to assist them with their online, as well as offline, behaviour:

  1. Use Reasoning to question what is real and what is not both online and off
  2. Treat yourself and others with Respect both online and off
  3. Develop Resilience to get back up from tough times both online and off
  4. Illustrate Responsibility and be there for others to support the online and off

Students and parents are encouraged to go to the Office of the eSafety Commissioner website for further information and resources.

Swimming Carnival

We are looking forward to the Secondary School Swimming Carnival which will be held next Tuesday 19 February at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. This is a great day which contributes to House and School spirit and we look forward to seeing students compete and cheer on the day. More specific information about the Carnival, including links to permissions, can be found on the respective Year Group pages.

Judith Locke Presentation

In an ever-changing world, parents are constantly wondering how they can best support their child. As part of our on-going efforts to support parents and provide them with useful information and recent research on ‘best practice’, we are excited to announce that clinical psychologist and author, Dr Judith Locke, will be coming to Redlands to present two workshops for parents around how you can support your child to become more confident and capable. These workshops are designed to provide specific strategies to assist the young people we care for to achieve their personal bests, both within the classrooms as well as in other areas of life. Judith will provide advice as to how to support your child in a friendly and relatable way as well as providing specific strategies around how to help your child become more independent and make the most of their opportunities whilst at school.

Dr Judith Locke is a registered clinical psychologist, and former teacher and workplace trainer. She is now director of the training company, Confident and Capable, which delivers psychological solutions for parents, students and organisations. Judith works with families and individuals in her private practice in Toowong, Qld. She also undertakes research at QUT, investigating modern parenting, student and parent wellbeing, and their interaction with the academic environment. Judith is a member of The Australian Psychological Society (APS) and a Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. She is also the author of the popular parenting book, The Bonsai Child: Why modern parenting limits children’s potential and practical strategies to turn it around.

The Secondary School session will be held on Monday 25 February from 6.00pm in Redlands Hall. Please note these sessions are for parents only and you should not bring your children.

Study Centre

After positive feedback from our initial offerings last year, we are further expanding our before and after school Study Centre for students. The Study Centre will take place Monday from 7.30 – 8.15am and 4.30 – 6.00pm and Tuesday and Wednesday from 7.30 – 8.15am and 3.30 – 6.00pm. The aim of the Study Centre is to provide students from Yrs 7-12 with the opportunity to receive shoulder-to-shoulder support or assistance in specific disciplines from Secondary School teachers. These sessions are not to be seen as formalised one-on-one tutoring sessions but instead should be seen as opportunities for students to get assistance or feedback on specific areas of learning. While the Study Centre will take place in the Library for most subjects, some more practical subjects will hold these in specialised spaces. The Study Centre commenced in Week 3 and a schedule of offerings can be found on the Secondary School page of Redlands Pulse.

From the Deputy Principal, Ms Sarah McGarry

Connectedness, a sense of belonging to a community, results from more than putting on a uniform or cheering a School sport team – but the proud respectful wearing of a uniform, that visible connection to others in the School, does make a difference. The way in which our School uniform is worn speaks to School pride and spirit, self-respect and respect for the School. As we approach the end of Week 3 of term, all students are asked to consider the School values of Respect and Responsibility when it comes to their personal presentation whilst in any form of Redlands uniform.

The School’s expectations around presentation and uniform are clearly outlined in the Student Planner and on Redlands Pulse and it would be very much appreciated if parents and students could revisit these and attend to aspects of the uniform which are currently not worn correctly.

Our staff would rather interact positively with a student over their interests, learning progress and participation than have to focus on correcting students for unsatisfactory uniform or presentation.

In particular:

  • Boys’ socks should be grey, not black, patterned or coloured
  • Girls’ socks should be short, not ‘invisible’ sports style
  • Girls’ dress length should be on the knee
  • Navy ribbons or scrunchies should be in girls’ hair (not other colours)
  • Makeup and jewellery are not acceptable whilst students are in uniform

Following last year’s parent Uniform Survey, further consultation with students will occur this term, with feedback expected to be shared with the community early Term 2.

The Redlands team has been registered on the Mother’s Day Classic site so it’s time to get your group together and register. There are 87 days to go until the the big day, Sunday 13 May.  Over recent years Team Redlands has slipped on the leaderboard of competing schools so our honour is at stake!  This is a wonderful family oriented event with categories for serious runners through to fun runners of all ages. Proceeds raised from this event are donated to Breast Cancer Research. Redlands pink caps and a new pink Team Redlands t-shirt will be available from the Uniform Shop by the end of April.  All Redlands winter sports teams are encouraged to incorporate the event as part of their training and team building.

Junior School Mentoring

Secondary students in Yrs 9 – 11 are encouraged to sign up for mentoring in the Junior School Maths or Reading Clubs. These after school academic support programs run on Wednesday afternoons during Terms 2 and 3. Secondary students are paired with a Junior School student who, through weekly one to one mentoring, will develop confidence and ability. Secondary students will be provided with some training in mentoring in the last few weeks of Term 1 so that they have the confidence and awareness needed for the role. The reading or maths material will be provided by the teachers from the Junior School who will always be on hand for support. The most important aspect of this Service activity is consistent, regular weekly attendance as the Junior School buddy is depending on you.

Year 12

Study Centre at Roseby Library

Soothing vibe, fewer distractions, dedicated teachers, handy resources. This was how I felt when I walked into the Roseby Library on Tuesday afternoon. It was great to see the growing number of Yr 12 students beginning to utilise this opportunity to their benefit. Students were actively seeking assistance on specific questions from respective teachers, working with friends in groups whilst sharing personal tips, or simply catching up on assignments before going home. Study location is vital, especially when students are working under pressure. Many of them may feel more focused and motivated when surrounded by other people, who are also working. I would encourage more students to attend these designated sessions on a regular basis to buckle down and get work done. And remember, a range of experienced teachers are always there to help.

Yr 12 Privileges

In response to a student proposal, our cohort started their Yr 12 Privileges from the beginning of Term 4 last year. Students have been made very aware and are reminded that Permitted Late Arrivals and Early Departures are a privilege, not a right. If a student does not have a class at the beginning (such as Period 1, or Periods 1 and 2) or end of the day (Period 5, or Periods 5 and 6), they are not required to be in attendance at school. All students arriving on a Permitted Late Start are to come to the Secondary School Office and sign in. If students are leaving on a Permitted Early Departure they are also required to come to the Secondary School Office and sign out. If a student has a free/study period in between classes, he/she is not allowed to leave the school grounds, apart from lunch. If a student has a free/study period, he/she is required to have their name/s marked off at the Library at the beginning of these study periods.

Students are required to be in attendance for all scheduled academic classes including Tutor, Period 3 and Period 4 daily.

Please also note, it is compulsory for all students to attend the first and last days of Terms 1, 2 and 3 in order to attend the Welcome and End of Term Assemblies. Students are also required to attend school for any event as specified by their Year Advisor, Assistant Year Advisor, the Dean of Students or the Head of Secondary School.

As part of our Duty of Care, we must always be aware of the location of all students.

Yr 12 Parent Coordinators

I would like to extend a warm welcome to Mrs Sonja Price and Mrs Jenny Swift, who are our Parent Coordinators for this year and also thank them for taking their time and effort to undertake this role. As a former member of the RPFA Committee for four years, Mrs Price has been actively involved in our community. Her eldest son completed the HSC in 2017 and Alec is currently completing the IB. Mrs Swift was a Parent Coordinator for Yr 12 two years ago, during which time she helped to organise many Yr 12 events.

Secondary School Study and Organisation

On Monday afternoon, academic staff were fortunate to listen to a presentation from Dr Prue Salter in relation to preparing students for study and revision. Dr Salter proved a most engaging speaker and there were many takeaways for our Yr 10 students that we will implement during our Year Assemblies and Pastoral Program through Tutors. Dr Salter’s website is a very valuable resource and one that all parents and students have access to. There is a wealth of resources on this website but some particularly worthwhile units are Developing Motivation, Dealing with Distractions and Overcoming Procrastination.

Interesting Article

As both a parent and teacher of teenage children, I often read interesting articles and thought I would begin sharing one each week in Note Day. I find these articles often informative, sometimes argumentative, and at times I may totally disagree with some of the comments. However, I hope you will enjoy reading them and perhaps taking away a few key points each week, as I often do. If nothing else, it may help stimulate our minds and invite discussions with our children.

This week’s article is about trying to reduce the risk of depression by eating more healthily, as research says that if you want to feel better, eat less junk food. I was very mindful of this when my 14 year old son asked me to stop at McDonalds on the way home from his Water Polo match on Saturday!

Pastoral Care and Social Awareness Program Update

Our Pastoral Care program has been divided into two different areas this year as I mentioned in my welcome letter to you at the start of the year. We have changed it slightly since then and it is now divided into a Pastoral Care program and a Social Awareness program. For further information, please log onto your child’s iLearn page and you can see what they cover on a weekly basis. However, I will give a brief overview in Note Day each week, as it may help stimulate conversations around the dinner table.

Pastoral Care Program

This week the students are looking closely at their digital reputation, learning the importance of being digitally responsible for their actions and how to treat others with an appropriate standard of behaviour. They have also been considering how much time they spend online, and this was further highlighted during the Whole School Assembly when the Prefects showed the video Look Uphere is the link if you are interested in watching it (please note: the one inappropriate word in the video was blanked out in Assembly).

Social Awareness Program

Currently students are exploring the overall issue of inequality in Australia, looking at the different ways that inequality exists and people it affects.

Assessment Handbook

The Assessment Handbook for the year is now available on Redlands Pulse and iLearn Pastoral page.

Twilight Drinks

Just to confirm that Friday 22 February is the Twilight Drinks evening on the Junior Campus, beginning at 6.00pm. This event is for parents of all Year Groups. Tony Dong and I will be there at the start so please come and say hello if you attend the event.

Yr 9 Parent Representatives

We are looking for volunteers to take on the role of Yr 9 Parent Reps for 2019. Ideally at least two people are needed, however the more the merrier.

The role entails organising:

  • a coffee morning at the beginning of each term
  • a Dad’s night out
  • a Mum’s night out
  • an end of year gathering
  • welcoming new parents/students to the school
  • being a conduit for information.

There are quarterly meetings held in school for all Year Parent Reps, which only one of the team need attend so that information can be passed on. It is a fun way to get to know more people and more about what is happening at the School. If you think this is for you – please contact Kylie Hunt on bk.hunt@me.com

Should a student’s phone be confiscated for a second time, the student will need hand this into the Secondary School Office each morning for five days. The phone will be stored securely and can be collected each afternoon.

Personal Organisation at Home

Tutors and teachers have been assisting students with their personal organisation at school. Home organisation is also key in supporting the development of effective skills in the classroom. The Study Skills Handbook (username: redlands | password: 68results) provides useful information on establishing effective study environments and managing organisation and filing at home.

Head of Junior School

Beyond the Junior School

As a P-12 School, there are many enriching opportunities for students and staff to connect and collaborate with each other across the three sections of Redlands. In the last week, I have experienced and enjoyed two such moments that highlight the special nature of being part of a P-12 School environment.

Last Saturday, I spent time watching a number of our Junior School Basketball teams play their first match of the year and the final game of the morning for us in Dunnet Hall preceded the Senior 1sts Basketball team playing against St Pius X College. The Senior boys and their families had intentionally come earlier to support and cheer on our  team and our boys clearly responded to this added support with a strong performance and win over Newington College, following the successful start for our five other teams in this age group against Newington. Conversely, many of our Juniors and their families then stayed on to cheer the 1sts and were able to sit as part of the 1sts extended bench during their game, a fabulous experience for them to be part of.

Head of Junior Sport, Mr Carter, and I stood on the sidelines for both games and it was a moment that evoked great pride for us seeing boys who had been part of our Junior teams not that long ago, now playing for the 1sts but still valuing the connections with younger students and serving as fine role models.

Then on Monday, it was a pleasure for me to attend this week’s assembly for the highest academic achievers in both the HSC and IB Diploma from the Redlands Class of 2018. Like a number of Junior School teachers, I had taught a number of these students in their primary years and over the years, have loved seeing them grow and flourish in our Secondary School environment. These top 40 students and their families were welcomed back and have set the bar for our current Yrs 11 and 12 students to emulate their successes in the next two years.

Of particular note, I enjoyed hearing one of the returning students, Hugh Smylie, speak passionately about the importance of balance in his final year, ensuring that he continued his passion for extra curricular activities alongside his studies, something that we value equally at a primary age. Hugh has been involved in our Junior School reading support program as part of his Service for the last three years of his schooling and certainly made a difference to many of our students.

The record 56% of the Yr 12 2018 cohort who achieved an ATAR score of 90+ were rightly acknowledged at this Academic Achievement Assembly but clearly of equal importance to both them and us was the wider contributions that they were able to make during their time at Redlands and the noteworthy legacy that they have left behind.

Parent Seminars

It was wonderful to join many Junior School families at this week’s eChat Session on the connection between our Teaching and Learning philosophy and the integration of technology. My thanks are extended to our eLearning Coordinator, Mrs Winrow, and Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mr Coutts, for their extensive preparation and presentation to parents, which has also been placed on Redlands Pulse for all parents to access.

A reminder of two upcoming parent seminars that were outlined in more detail in last week’s Note Day, which can be found in the back issues section on Redlands Pulse.

Yrs 5 and 6 Debating

Please note that registrations for Yrs 5 and 6 Debating will close next Monday 18 February. Debating is for Terms 1, 2 and 3 on a Tuesday afternoon during Cocurricular Clubs (3.30-4.30pm). Please read the detailed information about the program here. If your child is interested in being a part of the Representative teams, the last day for trials will be Tuesday next week, during the Debating workshop time. Registration for the program is via a Google Form, which you can access here.

Car Line Reminder

As per the information communicated to all families before the start of term, please join the car line after 3.15pm at the earliest as our K-2 students are picked up before this time in the Prep Car Line pick up. We have some parents here long before we finish at 3.20pm which is causing congestion for families of our younger students. Many thanks for your immediate attention and cooperation with this matter.

Year Parent Representatives

Thank you to parents who have sent their names through to Mrs Fairfax in the Junior School Office offering to be a Year Group parent this year. As mentioned before, in a slight change from previous years, the RPFA are aiming to have one parent per class, who will collaborate with other parents from across that Year Group to organise more Year Group social events and foster greater connection across the parent group. We are currently seeking one parent representative from the following classes to work alongside a parent from each of the other respective classes in that group: Classes 3M, 4A, 4C, 5B, 5F and 5S. Please contact Mrs Fairfax in the Junior School Office if you are able to take up this important community role for 2019.

Junior School Spanish – Education Perfect and Linguascope

Redlands Junior School students will be using Education Perfect and Linguascope once again in 2019 within the Spanish program.

Education Perfect has been implemented in hundreds of schools, with notable impacts on student motivation, grades, and on the number of students who continue with their language learning. Global, state, and inter-class competitions take place through the year, which encourage students to continue learning a second language.

Regular Spanish home learning tasks on Education Perfect will be set to complement the topics we are studying in class. Whilst not compulsory, these tasks are highly recommended as they enable students to focus on vocabulary and other content at home, allowing more time for the application of this knowledge in context during class time.

Linguascope is also used in thousands of schools around the world and gives students access to purposeful and engaging games and activities that inspire and motivate learners. Junior School Spanish students will be using the Linguascope Beginners level app.

All Junior School students have the same log in details for Linguascope which will be distributed to the students.

Parents are also welcome to visit the websites for more information – www.educationperfect.com and www.linguascope.com

Students can access these apps from anywhere on an iPad, iPhone or computer using the same log in details. These free apps will be available on self-service or from the App Store for your child’s iPad.

Celebrating Achievements

As we come to the close of Week 3, it is lovely to see the children beginning to settle into school routines after a long summer break. Together with their teacher, the classes have discussed important goals for themselves and collectively for the classroom, such as the positive behaviours required for learning. You may have seen these in classrooms, the Library or in the playground already. You will also notice the Let Your Light Shine board outside the office filled with colourful prompts for the students about playground conduct, with pictures to aid in understanding. I encourage all parents to discuss these with their children in an effort to emphasise the messages of positive classroom and playground behaviour.

As the youngest group at Redlands, the Early Childhood students have an extensive journey toward the conclusion of their school life. However, it is this journey that paves the way to the achievements that are so rewarding at the end of Yr 12. On Monday, I was privileged to attend the High Achievers Academic Assembly where the top 20 HSC and IB 2018 Alumni, received their commendation in front of staff, parents and the seniors of 2019. The student reflections highlighted the importance of balancing the rigours of academic studies with extracurricular activities. For many students, continuing with their dance, sport and drama activities assists with the pressures of the final year. This is a pertinent message for all as we begin school for the year; ensuring children have a balanced school life, filled with down time, extracurricular and academic learning.

Chinese New Year

Kindergarten celebrated Chinese New Year last Friday in their classes. Students were introduced to the reasons why Lunar New Year is important in the Chinese culture. As students entered classrooms they were greeted with festive music and were told the story of Nian, which describes the twelve animals on the zodiac and how they came to be. The students had the opportunity to work with each other as they rotated through art activities including cherry blossom printing, constructing Chinese lanterns, puppet dragons and fire crackers. It was lovely to watch friends helping each other and engage in conversations about their new-found knowledge of Chinese New Year. To conclude the day, students were all given a special red packet to wish them well for the year ahead.

Staff News

Last week, we welcomed our new eLearning Facilitator, Mrs Argiro Anagnostu, who joins Mrs Shireen Winrow in our ICT eLearning team on the Junior Campus. Argiro will be familiar to teachers and students as she has assisted with Prep’s STEM days last year (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). This year, her role will see her in all classes from Preschool through to Yr 2, facilitating ICT lessons alongside classroom teachers.  I know that you will join me in welcoming Argiro to her new role at Redlands.

Contacting Redlands Preparatory Reception

To ensure we are able to respond to all emails in a timely manner, could I please remind all parents to send correspondence to earlychildhood@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Mrs Rosling and Mrs Hunt share the role at Prep Reception and therefore sending correspondence to either one of their addresses may result in an email being overlooked.

Animals on School Premises

The students love to share stories about their furry and feathered friends in Prep School. However, could I please ask families to refrain from bringing animals onto the School premises. This also includes leaving animals tied to the School gates. Some students are frightened or allergic to animals and it may cause undue stress. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Redlands Pulse (Parent Portal)

To access Kindergarten, Yr 1 and Yr 2 information distributed throughout the year, please familiarise yourself with the relevant year page on Redlands Pulse. To locate this page, once logged in, you need to click on the ‘Preparatory’ section within the ‘Area of School’. Once here, click on the year level page on the side bar. These pages have been updated with pertinent 2019 information, including the start of year letter, any excursion information letters and details of the Meet the Teacher evenings last week. You will also find a whole School Calendar, with all events on Redlands Pulse.

Sun Safety

For many years now, there has been a ‘No Hat No Play’ policy in the Prep School. Please make sure you provide a named, school hat each day for your child. Each classroom has sunscreen for students to apply before morning tea and lunch.  As a matter of safety, if students do not have a hat, they will stay in the shaded areas at all times.

Learning and Technology Parent Session

I would like to invite all K-2 parents to learn more about how technology is being used in your child’s classes. Please come along to attend the Learning and Technology Parent Session in Lucy Hill Library on Wednesday 20 February at 8.30am.

The presentation will include information on:
* Curriculum and ICT
* Seesaw
* Educational Apps
* Technology and wellbeing
To help provide us with an indication on numbers, please RSVP for the event here.

Twilight in the Piazza

I look forward to seeing families at Twilight in the Piazza, our first parent event for the year on Friday 22 February. This is a lovely opportunity to meet new families to the School and acquaint yourself with the Executive and other members of the community.

Oval Refurbishment

The Junior Campus Oval refurbishment is well underway with an approximate completion date by mid-March, pending weather conditions. It has been exciting to see each layer of the process and just this week the green turf was placed in position. The students on Junior Campus have adapted very well to their Piazza, Redlands House courts and playground play areas, whilst waiting for this project to finish. Students have also been making the most of the hoops, balls, skipping ropes and loose parts play, to build interesting constructions around the Piazza.

New Friends and Exciting Activities

Our Junior classes are really starting to settle in and enjoy their days at Redlands. They are getting to know the routine, exploring the environment and making new friends. Over these first few weeks we work on building relationships with the children, parents and families, and ensuring you all feel safe, comfortable and supported in your Preschool experience. As the children are gaining confidence, we are seeing their delightful personalities come out.

Sustainability is a key strategic focus of the School and an important part of the Quality Improvement Plan at Redlands House. This week, the children have been learning about how to care for their environment through books such as My Green Day by Melanie Walsh. The children have been interested in discovering the important role earthworms play in the environment, particularly learning that earthworms are responsible for making the soil fertile to grow healthy plants and provide us with food. The children were able to get up close and personal with earthworms in their Environmental Studies lesson, with some brave enough to hold the worm in their hand. There is a worm farm in the playground, in which students throw their daily food scraps, learning about which foods worms can and can’t eat.

Medication

Redlands House has strict government regulations that must be adhered to. Medication will only be administered at Redlands House if it is prescribed to the child or if it accompanied by a certificate of statement from the child’s doctor. Please see important information taken directly from our Medication Policy.

For medical conditions – if medication is to be administered, a medical action plan is to be provided by the child’s parents/guardians.

For illness – if medication is to be administered, a medical record is to be completed and signed by the child’s parents/guardians. Please ask educators for a medical form.

In the case of an emergency – if medication is to be administered in the case of an emergency, verbal permission can be obtained by an educator from the child’s parents/guardians.

In the case of an anaphylaxis or asthma emergency, medication can be administered without authorisation.

Medication will be stored in a child-proof medication area (either within the fridge or cupboard as appropriate). Under no circumstances should medication be left in the child’s bag or in a place accessible to any children. Thank you for your attention to this important information.

Weekly Results

From the Head of Secondary Sport

This week, students were emailed the Winter Sport registration forms. Preliminary information related to all available Winter Rep Sports and non-Rep Sports can be found on Redlands Pulse. Sport registrations will remain open until 22 February.

Students are reminded that:

  • In order to access the registration page, they need to log into Google with their school student email
  • All Yr 7 students must complete a Representative sport
  • All students who completed a non-Rep sport during summer, must complete a Representative sport in winter 2019.

Sports choice is a topic parents and students can often have trouble agreeing on. Our own research conducted around Winter Sport choice in 2018 indicated that the desire to improve skills” 21% andto have fun 14% where the two most influential factors on a Redlands student’s Winter Sport choice. The factors with the lowest influence on Sports choice are the desire to compete at a higher representationandto win1%. This research indicates the Redlands Sports program must foster a culture of high level engagement of where students are self-aware of the skills they are developing in fun and enjoyable environments. The critical question students should reflect on when registering for a sport is not “what sport they should do?”. Instead they should seek to understand how they will demonstrate commitment to that sport?

The improvement of skills is not isolated to a physical domain, but also the social, emotional and a mental domains of development. Skill development and learning to enjoy this process is vital to a student’s education and the long term goals of developing young people. Developing a student to have integrity, high moral standards and perseverance are outcomes we strive for in a Redlands education. Any sport is a vehicle for these goals. It is the commitment to these goals which makes the difference between success and failure in sport.

Basketball

Boys Basketball

Our A and B Boys teams played against St Pius in Round 8. It was the best round of the season for our A boys teams, winning four out of the five contests. Closely contested games saw our 13A team winning by one point and our 15A boys winning by two. The 17A Boys had their first win of the season and the 14A Boys seem to have found their stride with a great win over Pius. Our 1st Boys had a very close game against Pius with several lead changes in the final minutes. Unfortunately, a late surge by Pius saw our boys going down by four points at the final siren. Some very exciting Basketball for our B Boys teams saw both the 17B and Open B teams headed into overtime. The 17B team managed to pull away with a two point lead, but Pius had the upper hand in the Open B game after the extra time. Well done to our 14D team who are improving every week and continue to dominate the competition. Redlands Open C played against Redlands 17D and despite a great effort by both teams, the Open C team proved too strong on the day.

Girls Basketball

It was a great week for Girls’ Basketball with five out of a possible seven wins. Our 1sts Girls travelled to Oakhill and after a close loss last time, our girls were hoping for a win. A great start saw Redlands with an early lead but Oakhill made their way back, and most of the game saw the two teams trading baskets. A great surge late in the third quarter gave our girls a lead, and with a great defensive effort in the last quarter, Redlands finished with a seven point win. The Junior A Girls had another stellar win over BMGS, a great team effort at both ends of the floor. The Open B Girls and the Inter A Girls both had convincing wins against Chevalier and CCGS respectively, with both teams playing some great basketball as we near closer to the finals. Our Junior B Girls had a great win against St Spyridon and keep their undefeated streak alive.

Tennis

On Tuesday, six Redlands students competed in the ISA tennis trials at Barker College. It was hot conditions but all athletes played extremely well. Our four Redlands boys who trialled consisted of Aymon Holth, James Robinson, Sebastian Dobson and Philip Hilble. In a very competitive field of 28 boys, both Philip and Sebastian were successful in being selected in the eight person ISA team. Redlands also selected two female students to trial, Emily Colvin and Jade Sedgwick. The girls’ competition was just as competitive and had a record number of girl entrants this year. Despite the challenging hot conditions both girls played well. Emily was successful in being selected into the four person ISA team. A big achievement for all three students. Emily, Seb and Phil will now represent the ISA at the NSWCIS trials at The Kings School next Wednesday 20 February. Both Seb and Phil will also represent the ISA in matches against CAS and GPS. Good luck to these students next week and congratulations to all students who trialled, it is a great achievement to even be selected to trial.

Just a reminder NSTA Saturday competition starts this week, Saturday 16 February.

Touch Football

Saturday saw our Junior As and Junior Cs along with our Senior Cs travel to the Blue Mountains to play three games that would prove crucial to qualifying for the ISA Semi Finals in two weeks. Our Junior Cs started strongly, playing a tightly contested game against BMGS. There were some strong individual performances with Jazz Gregan and birthday girl Marie Kurzrock both making metres through the oppositions defence, Anna Ivanovic meanwhile was controlling the attack brilliantly in the middle. Ultimately the game ended in a tightly contested draw 3-3 with the result keeping our Junior Cs right in the hunt for a finals spot. Our Senior Cs came up against a solid BMGS team who were able to make early metres through the first two or three tackles which meant we were on the back foot early and had to defend for long periods of time. Josie McDonald and Emilia Built were working incredibly hard to contain the BMGS attack, often making multiple tackles in a row right against our tryline. It was great to see how hard this team worked together and they were rewarded with three fantastic tries with Alisha Karunagaran slicing through the defence to score along with a wonderful try from Emilia Built down the sideline. Matilda Williams had the highlight from this match though with a lovely show and go to open up the defence and run 30 metres down the field to score, finishing off a wonderful team performance. Our Junior As were brilliant, putting their best performance of the season forward and playing close to a perfect game. Their combinations were amazing with Emma Mahon again linking up with Piper Allen multiple times which resulted in three tries for our team from these two girls. Elsewhere Madison Barwise and Sophia Hill were causing nightmares for the opposition as they were constantly on the front foot, attacking at every chance. Defensively the Redlands girls were stunning, working so hard for each other. Katie Wightwick and Louise Colin defended like their lives depended on it and ultimately the score of 6-1 for Redlands was off the back of how hard the team worked in defence.

Elsewhere, in sunny Bowral, our 1st VI put together two strong performance against Oxley and Chevalier, running away winners in both games. Our 1st VI have showed steady improvement throughout this season and now are starting to peak at just the right time. Caitlin Du Plooy continues to lead this team on and off the field, her explosiveness in attack putting our team in great positions early in our sets. Two players who are benefiting from this are Ruby Brook and Lulu Simpson who, once in position, can make opponents miss time and time again with their wonderful footwork and speed. Will be great to see our 1st VI Girls Touch Football represent our school in the  Finals season.

This will be the last full round of fixtures for Redlands Touch Football with four out of six of our teams in the hunt for the Finals and our Junior As sitting on top of their table with only one loss for the season. I would like to encourage as many of our teams and parents to attend the Finals weekend and cheer on our teams representing Redlands Touch Football.

Winter Sport Selections

Despite having barely begun our summer programs, the winter season approaches quickly and we are now starting to  organise teams, fields and coaches. Trybooking will be open on Friday in Week 4 for parents and students to make selections for the upcoming winter season.

Mouthguard Fittings

Profit Mouthguards are coming to the Junior School to fit mouthguards. These professionally fitted mouthguards are customised with colours and phone number, will be fitted to your child and be delivered back to the school for collection in time for the winter sport season trainings.

Fitting times are available from 7.15 – 8.30am on Friday 22 February. Please email juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au to confirm a fitting time and be emailed a ProFit client form.

Extra Sport

Don’t forget our great extra sports on offer before and after school. Our Football Skills Squad is an active after school option running on Mondays with Coach Javier.

Speed and agility training with Nathan will return when the new oval upgrade is complete.

IPSHA Sports

IPSHA matches began last weekend and for this week all matches, times and venues are as per the original draw.

Basketball

Basketballers started their season against Cranbrook and Newington Wyvern last weekend and whilst results didn’t all go our way, the signs are good for a strong season. Our Yr 5 and 6 teams enjoyed playing before the 1sts and showed some really great teamwork, passing play was exceptional and I can’t wait to see it tested out on some tougher opposition. All six of our Senior teams were victorious in a great home display.

Our colour teams fought out a couple of tough contests in their first hit out for the season. The colour teams is a new initiative which is designed to give our newer and emerging players a chance to play in a competitive situation without some of the pressure of the IPSHA competition. Players on the colour teams will have home matches every week, be refereed and coached by our Representative coaches and referees on Saturdays and work with our leading development coach on a Wednesday. Game play is a great way for players to improve and gain experience and it’s hoped that with the increase in game time and more opportunities to be involved in the game, that the colour team players skill development will be expedited. We hope to have developed the players enough to add additional teams to the IPSHA competition in Term 4.

Our Junior teams took the road trip to Cranbrook where they showed some promise. More hard work under the basket in practice and toughness under the basket will help. Coaches Cooper and Sam are both super excited by the prospects of this young group and their first wins won’t be far away.

Girls’ Football

Girls’ Football kicks off this weekend and players and parents have been emailed the draw and team lists.

Junior School Swimming Carnival

The Junior School Swimming Carnival is set to take place on Wednesday 20 February. The Carnival will focus on House spirit and participation in the water. To help encourage participation, again this year we are offering the two pools (25m and 50m) to all students from all age groups. Age Championship points can only be attained by swimming in the 50m pool, students choosing to swim in the 25m pool will be swimming for House points only. The 50m pool will be awarding points according to time except for freestyle where Finals will be held. Every student swimming in a race gains a point for their House. Students may only swim in one pool per stroke. Place ribbons of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th will be awarded in both pools and to every race.

All students are expected to swim in at least one Carnival event.

Ballet and Dance

Students Achievements

Keeping our fingers crossed for our current Dance Captain, Jennifer Psaroulis, and Emma Green (Yr 12) who will be taking part in Callback 2018. Jen will be showcasing Emma Green’s Core Composition performance. All the best!

We have also had news that Tadgh Robinson, who left last year to join the Australian Ballet School, had a wonderful welcome by another Redlander Hannah Sergi who left for the ABS in 2015. Happy reunion!

Welcome

Our newest member of the team is the beautiful Miss Marcia’s baby, little Zoe Kuzmanoski. She was born on 24 January and both mum and little Zoe are doing really well. Congratulations!

Contemporary and Jazz Auditions

The Contemporary auditions took place last week together with the remaining Jazz auditions. There was an overwhelming number of students attending and the standard of dance was exceptionally high. The Academy would like to thank everyone who came for the day – everyone did extremely well which made the selection process extremely difficult.

More updates in regards to Eisteddfod dates to come shortly for the Performance Groups.

Ballet and Dance Academy Scholarship Auditions

The Ballet and Dance Scholarship auditions were held on Friday 8 February. We welcomed over 20 girls and boys to try for the 2020 Scholarship. The Academy was extremely proud to welcome the esteemed external adjudicator, Ms Jo Ansell, to support the selection process.

External Auditions

We are very excited to announce that Karin Ellis-Wentz, Head of the Pre-Professional Program at the Joffrey Ballet School Chicago, will be in Sydney on 14 April. She’ll be looking for promising dancers and offering positions in their five week Chicago Summer Intensive which runs from 17 June to 19 July 2019.

From last year’s audition of 93 Australians, eight were accepted with one scholarship given. Three Australian students are there full time: Max Jones, Tianna Koolloos and Alicia Mason. The Joffrey is hoping to offer more spaces this time.

The Joffrey Academy in Chicago is the only official school that feeds directly into the Joffrey Ballet Company (unlike the Joffrey NYC school). If you are interested in an overseas opportunity or simply to gain more experience in the art of auditioning please follow this link.

It was exciting to see the students excited about their new music journey for the year with the commencement of the Junior Campus Music Ensembles program. For ensembles that rehearse before school, please be reminded that there is no supervision for students prior to 7.10am. On Monday, supervision for Junior Guitar Ensemble and Junior Voices is provided from 7.25am and on Friday for Preparatory Choir from 7.40am.

Instrument Insurance

School hired instruments must be included on personal home and contents insurance as Redlands cannot be held responsible for instruments which are lost, stolen or damaged. As all instruments are very fragile, we ask for your assistance in ensuring that students do not let other children play with their instrument, instruments are kept in a safe place and out of extreme temperatures (ie. hot car) and are not left out of their case when not in use.
