Issue 29 2024 Term 3 Week 9 - 19 Sep 2024

From the Principal

Over the past few weeks I have been meeting with each Year 12 Tutor group individually for a morning tea to both celebrate and acknowledge their achievements and efforts as they come to the end of their schooling journey, while also getting some feedback on their experience at Redlands.

For one of my questions, I have asked each of them to share one word that best describes or sums up Redlands to them and their three most common answers were: Opportunity, Community and Supportive. A powerful and heartening list.

Pleasingly, I have seen these words in action over the past week around the School. Last Friday, we announced our new Secondary School student leaders to the community at lunchtime in Liggins Quad. What was so special to me about this event was how much pride and excitement the outgoing Year 12 student leaders showed in embracing the new student leaders and the wider support from the Secondary School students and staff as each of the new captains was announced.

On Sunday I attended the Dance Awards and again community, opportunity and support were on display with students, parents and staff reflecting on the year, enjoying performances and receiving well-earned recognitions. A highlight of mine was hearing from two Redlanders who were leaders in the Redlands Dance program during its inception almost 25 years ago: India Patten (Lathey), Class of 2000 and Ariane Beeston (Solomons), Class of 2001. While the Redlands Dance Academy has certainly progressed in leaps and bounds since their time at the School, the underlying cultural messages of inclusivity, diversity and support have remained the same.

On Monday I enjoyed attending the final student run assemblies led by the Class of 2024 Captains and hearing their underlying message of the importance of authenticity and how we are all so fortunate to be a part of a school that celebrates students for being their authentic selves.

Then on Tuesday morning I was able to speak to the Year 1 students before they headed off for their Camp program and hear their excitement of embarking on new activities and stepping out of their comfort zones. I also joined in an Aboriginal education experience with our Year 2 students led by the Nyumbar education team, which provided Year 2 with an opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal culture in a deeper and more meaningful way.

On Tuesday I also enjoyed seeing our Secondary School athletes shine at the ISA Athletics Championships. There were many outstanding results on the track and in the field, but it was also wonderful to see the strong support our students showed for each other, whether it was filling in for injured athletes in a race or cheering them on down the home straight.

I would like to make a special mention of our School Captain, Isaac Brooks, who finished his stellar athletics career at Redlands winning both the 800 metre and 1500 metre races  I would also like to congratulate our Junior, Intermediate and Senior Girls teams who each finished second in Division 1, leading Redlands to an Overall Girls second place finish.

Yesterday evening I attended the Year 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition and was blown away not just by the creations but also by the curations of our IB Visual Arts students. Last night I was also privileged to hear our outgoing student leaders share their reflections on their final year at Redlands with our Board of Directors. Their maturity, insight and pride for their School was a truly heartwarming experience for all of us in attendance. And this morning, I was able to be a part of the Year 12 Final Chapel Service and witness how our graduating students have been nourished and supported over the course of their spiritual journey at Redlands.

A community that is supportive with so many opportunities for students to let their light shine. A wonderful description of Redlands which has certainly been on display over the past week.

Photo Caption: It was a proud moment on our Senior Campus as we announced our 2025 Student Leadership team! A big congratulations to our student leaders and a special mention to Aneke and Liam, who were announced as our new School Captains.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome a number of our key community groups on campus this week for their seasonal meetings, that included the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Friends of Group and the Redlanders Alumni Association.

We continue to ensure the important connection with our Redlander community is nurtured and developed through our dedicated alumni engagement program that includes coaching, mentoring and networking opportunities, career and study advice, interstate and international reunions and employment opportunities at the School. We were thrilled to welcome Dance scholars India Patten, Captain of Dance (RL 2000) and Ariane Beeston (nee Solomons) (RL 2001), who joined our celebration at this year’s Dance Awards. Their words of wisdom and encouragement inspired our young dancers and India and Ariane’s career can be followed more closely in the Foundation section. We greatly value the relationships we build with our Alumni and our aim is to encourage and support a lifelong connection to the School.

Our RPFA and Friends of Group volunteers continue to connect our community.  They are currently working on a number of different activities and event that include a few end of season awards dinners and most notably, our highly anticipated Festival of Redlands event.  that will take place on Saturday 19 October on our Junior Campus. Our Festival of Redlands will shine a light on 140 years of the School highlighting our rich and diverse culture, growth, talent and community. From 1-5pm, the Festival will showcase Performing Arts, Sports, Academics, Visual Arts, Innovative Design and Outdoor Education and feature an international food extravaganza and a House Challenge. More information, along with ticketing details, can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day, along with information on the wide range of other parent and carer events that continue to connect our community.

My thanks to those who donated uniforms, and to the Redlands Uniform Shop and the ever active and passionate RPFA for their collective effort in fulfilling the recent Second Hand Uniform Sale.  This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Educate Plus Excellence Awards

The Redlander Alumni Awards program, launched in 2022, has achieved a remarkable milestone, being selected as a Finalist for the prestigious Educate Plus Excellence Awards. Our program was selected from 54 nominations for the Alumni campaign and presented to other participants at the international conference attended by independent schools from Australia and Asia.

This achievement would not have been possible without incredible dedication of our Alumni Coordinator, Kim Flatman, alongside the Awards panel – Vicky Kvisle, Natalie Davies, Amy Cheung and Michael Compton. Their efforts have truly elevated this program and made it inspirational for all our Redlands community.

Dance Awards – Welcoming Redlander Scholars Back to Campus

We were thrilled to welcome Redlander Dance scholars India Patten, Captain of Dance 2000 and Ariane Beeston (nee Solomons), RL 2001, who joined us back on campus to celebrate at this year’s Dance Awards. Their words of encouragement and support were greatly valued by our young dancers, and they thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful event.

After graduating from Redlands, India spent time in the US pursuing an acting career, with credits including the smash hit movie Interstellar, and television shows Greys Anatomy and CSI: NY. Having returned to Sydney, India is now pursuing her passion to help others as a Speech Pathologist.

“During my time at Redlands I was lucky to be able to nurture both my love of ballet through the opportunities given to me by attending the dance school, as well as my love of writing in the first cohort to complete extension two English! Writing and ballet have continued to be cherished parts of my life.” Ariane

In 2001 Ariane topped the state in 3 Unit Classical Ballet and was recognised with a feature article in the Mosman Daily newspaper. She continues to teach ballet to children and adult beginners. Ariane is currently the Communications & Project Manager at COPE: Centre of Perinatal Excellence, and recently published “Because I’m not myself you see,” a frank, hopeful and darkly funny memoir of postpartum psychosis and recovery. We are so proud of both these incredible Redlanders!

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books. If you would like to join Book Club, and learn where we are meeting this month or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our next meeting will be during the week of 28 October, when we will be discussing Safe Haven by Shankari Chandran.

Seen a book you’re dying to read and discuss? Recommend it for our next read!

Kids Giving Back

Kids Giving Back is hosting a mega cooking marathon this Sunday, 22 September. The Week in Pictures

Walks on tracks enjoying a glorious Sydney morning!

1 Blue hosted the parents of Year 1 at Monet and Moscato for a paint and sip evening. A lot of fun and many laughs were had painting our giraffes under the guidance of a talented painter. We all got to take home our masterpieces – which may or may not have ended up in the pool room.

The mums of Year 4 gathered in Newcastle over the weekend for a weekend away. Massages and coastal walks were enjoyed along with a gin and vodka mixing session. It was a great weekend with new connections made and stronger bonds forged. Can’t wait for the Year 5 mums weekend away next year!

Do you have event pics you want to share? Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

Head of Secondary School

It’s Been a Week of Lasts for Year 12

The Student Leadership Team held their final student led assemblies on Monday.  Throughout the year they have awarded over 90 students with Step Beyond awards for acts of courage and kindness as well as exceptional achievements and performances.  Overall, Year 10 were awarded the highest number of Step Beyond awards this year and will receive a pizza lunch in Term 4. For their final student assemblies, Year 12 spoke of their 2024 achievements, their pride in the school community and the teachers who have shaped and influenced them along the way. This week the Student Leaders bestowed Step Beyond awards on their teachers too. It was a nice moment for the younger students to witness as the Year 12s made visible the learning success which comes from strong relationships with teaching staff.

  • Mr Taylor – “Believing in us, pushing us, and driving our success.”

  • Mr Wrighter – “Making physics welcoming, helping us believe.”
  • Mr Peate – “Working magic behind the scenes, making everything possible.”
  • Ms Xue 薛老师 – “Guiding us with care, humour and dedication.”

Year 12 Final Chapel

This morning, it was a great privilege to be a part of the Year 12 Final Chapel Service. Our Chaplain Ms Phillips led the service, supported by a range of student speakers and musicians. Ms Phillips used the symbol of light to encourage students to treasure and nurture their own personal light and then encouraged them to light the way for others too. It was a moving and hope-filled service which saw Year 12 blessed by a school choir made up of Junior Voices and the Intermediate Choir. Afterwards, students, staff and parents of Year 12 gathered on the Fahl Garden for morning tea in the sun. It was another beautiful final experience for our delightful Year 12 cohort.

Captains of Activities Appreciation Breakfast

On Wednesday morning, the Captains of Activities Appreciation Breakfast was held in the Fahl Garden. The event brought together Captains of Sports, Performing Arts and other activities, as well as the staff and teachers who have supported Year 12 throughout their six years at Redlands. It was an opportunity to thank everyone for their commitment and leadership during this time.

During the breakfast, Dean of Activities, Mr Jon Gray addressed Year 12 and staff in his speech, emphasising the importance of continuing cocurricular activities after school. He highlighted how these activities contribute to maintaining social connections and help in developing well-rounded individuals. His words underscored the role of cocurricular involvement in personal growth beyond academic life.

The event was a chance to acknowledge the leadership and dedication of the Captains, as well as the guidance and support of the staff who have played a key role in shaping the students’ experiences at Redlands. It served as a reminder of the strong community that has been built through shared efforts and commitment.

Final Week of Term

As we approach the final week of the term, we want to encourage our young people to stay focused and finish strong. Here are a few important reminders to help us all maintain our high standards and ensure a smooth end to the term.

Uniform

With students having the option of summer or winter uniform, it’s important to make sure our uniform standards don’t slip. Students should wear their blazers to and from school every day and they will be needed for all formal events in the final week of Term 4. Looking smart helps us feel smart and ready to tackle the final days of the term with pride.

Respecting Our Community: After-School Guidelines

We love seeing our students socialising and enjoying time together after school. However, due to end-of-term fatigue and a natural drop in self-management, we ask that social activities take place in the comfort and safety of someone’s home under parental supervision. This helps everyone stay safe and respectful of our community. Please note that students will not be allowed to visit local shops after school during the final week of the term.

Thank You, Parents!

A big thank you to our wonderful parents for your continued support. To help students stay energised for their after-school activities, please ensure they have ample snacks packed in their bags for afternoon tea. Your efforts in keeping them fuelled and focused are greatly appreciated.

Let’s work together to finish the term on a high note!

Cocurricular Clubs

Senior Theatresports: Where Fun Meets Friendship Every Tuesday Lunchtime

Theatresports is a fantastic lunchtime club at Redlands that brings students from Years 7 to 12 together for a fun and supportive experience. Whether you’re new to drama or an experienced performer, Theatresports welcomes everyone. Annalise Beatty, a Year 7 student, shared her thoughts on the club and how it’s become a highlight of her week:

“I started going to Theatresports during the first week of term and I look forward to it every week. Theatresports is a lunchtime club that welcomes anyone from Years 7 to 12, no matter whether you have done drama or Theatresports before. In my opinion, it is one of the most inclusive clubs at Redlands. Theatresports is run by Miss Amber, who is one of the kindest and most fun teachers I ever met. When I first joined, Miss Amber and all the Year 12s showed us the games and helped me improve. The people in older Year Groups were so nice and inclusive. The thing I like most about Theatresports is the community, how it is always fun to watch, but I also love that it is a nonjudgmental environment. Everyone is just having fun; you can be yourself and you know you won’t be judged. At the Theatresports competitions, anyone is welcome to compete. That is why I love going to Theatresports every week.”

Annalise’s reflection highlights the welcoming, inclusive, and fun environment of Theatresports. The club allows students from different Year Groups to come together, share in improvisational games and develop their skills in a nonjudgmental setting. With guidance from Miss Amber and support from older students, it’s easy to see why this club fosters such a strong sense of community.

Senior Theatresports is held every Tuesday lunchtime in the Drama Theatre, offering students an excellent opportunity to join in the fun, explore their creativity, and be part of this inclusive group. Whether you’re interested in competing or just watching, everyone is welcome!

Poetry and Writing Club Reflection: Clouds, Sandcastles and Hydrangeas

Last Tuesday, the Poetry and Writing Club gathered to engage with creative prompts designed to ignite the imagination. Club supervisor, Miss Genevieve Comino introduced three themes—clouds, sandcastles, and hydrangeas—offering members the chance to explore different aspects of these subjects in their writing.

The first prompt, What would you see if you could sit on a cloud?, encouraged students to dream from an elevated perspective. Some wrote about the calm and peaceful view from above, while others took a more whimsical or adventurous approach to the theme.

The second prompt, Outline the true ingenuity in building a sandcastle, invited reflections on the fleeting nature of creation. Many members drew parallels between the fragile nature of sandcastles and the impermanence of life’s accomplishments, while others focused on the joy and creativity involved in the act of building itself.

The final prompt, If you were speaking to a hydrangea, what would they say as a reply?, sparked creative interpretations of a conversation with nature. The hydrangeas in these poems symbolised transformation, often reflecting themes of change, wisdom or humour, depending on the writer’s perspective.

Each response to the prompts offered a unique insight into the writer’s imagination, and the discussions that followed deepened the group’s understanding of creative expression. The session highlighted how a simple question or observation can inspire a wide range of interpretations and perspectives.

Poetry & Creative Writing Club meet every Tuesday lunch time in LH 2.3.

Year 11

Congratulations to the 2025 Leadership Team

We are thrilled to congratulate the students who have been elected to leadership positions for 2025. Representing the student body is a significant achievement, and these roles come with the responsibility to serve the school community with dedication, humility, and vision. Leadership is not just about holding a position; it’s about making a positive difference and inspiring others along the way.

Stepping into a leadership role means more than wearing a badge; it is about leading with integrity, fostering collaboration, and setting an example for others. As you embark on this journey, you will have the chance to inspire positive change and leave a lasting impact, both within our school and beyond. We are excited to see how you will contribute your unique strengths and ideas to make our community even stronger.

For those who may not have been successful in securing a formal leadership role, we encourage you to remember that leadership exists in many forms. Every student has the potential to demonstrate leadership, regardless of a title or badge. Whether through acts of kindness, service, or simply being a positive influence, each of you can contribute to the fabric of our school community.

While disappointment is natural, it’s important not to let it deter you from seeking out opportunities to lead in other areas of the school. A true leader is selfless, compassionate, and always willing to put others before themselves. By engaging with the community in meaningful ways, you show that leadership is not about recognition but about making a lasting impact.

As our Year 11 cohort move into Year 12, we encourage all students to keep striving, keep serving, and continue to lead by example.

Service Learning Excursion

On Monday, Yr 10 students participated in a meaningful Service Learning excursion, attending two different locations to support those experiencing homelessness in Sydney.

At Cook4Good, students worked together to prepare hundreds of meals for those in need. They chopped, peeled, cooked and then carefully packaged the food into boxes, each containing messages of hope and care for the recipients.

At the end of the day, students reflected on the experience, with many expressing how it deepened their sense of connection both to each other and to the issue of homelessness. They remarked that they had “underestimated how many people are living on the streets or are homeless in Sydney” and found it hard to grasp these numbers while living in such a beautiful country.

Meanwhile, students who participated in the Urban Walks program were profoundly inspired by their group leaders, individuals who had experienced significant periods of homelessness, addiction and other traumatic events, but who have since overcome many of these challenges. The students were deeply moved by their stories and shared that the experience opened their eyes to the complexity of these issues, noting that “homelessness can happen to anyone, no matter their background.” Many students said the experience left them feeling changed, with a new perspective on homelessness and the stereotypes surrounding it.

Year 10 Lunch on the Roof Top

On Tuesday, Year 10 students gathered on the Roof Top for a cohort lunch, celebrating those who remained on campus this term. It was a fun occasion at the end of a very busy term, filled with laughter, shared stories, and delicious food enjoyed under the sun.

 Year 10 House Debating Finals

Congratulations to Dumolo and Roseby, the finalists in Tuesday’s House Debating competition, who went head-to-head over the topic, “That teachers’ salaries should be related to their performance.” Both sides put forward fierce and compelling arguments, making it a hard-fought debate.

In the end, Roseby emerged victorious, arguing that the complexities of student welfare and the challenges of meeting the needs of diverse student communities make it impossible to base teacher pay on performance alone.

ISA Athletics

On Tuesday, the ISA Athletics carnival was held with strong representation from a variety of Redlands students. Congratulations to all those students who participated and particularly to the following Yr 10 students who achieved some excellent results!

StartUp Bootcamp Pitch Night

This term, a group of students from Years 8-10 have participated in StartUp Bootcamp; a program designed to foster innovation and entrepreneurial skills. The program culminated in a Pitch Night last night where students pitched their ideas to an audience of peers and parents. Six Year 9 students participated in the event and the calibre of their ideas was outstanding. A huge congratulations to the following students:

  • India Dutton’s holistic wellbeing app, ‘Balance Buddy,’ aims to create personalised fitness, diet and wellbeing plans based on individual user needs.
  • Hugo Christy’s D.I.Ride Rim Repair kits are designed as a quick and simple solution to damaged tyre rims, extending the value of your car.
  • Josh Dubowksy’s FinEx is a gamified investment app for young people, cultivating a new generation of financially literate adults. Josh has previously won Spriggy’s Sprig Tank competition, being awarded $1000 in funding towards his idea.
  • Rafael Rolon is the mastermind behind ‘Fit Happens,’ a fitness app that targets young people who struggle to find motivation. The app encourages friendly competition and offers rewards to those who reach their goals.
  • Charlie Wilson’s innovation, ‘Earlybird,’ is a job board for those seeking their first jobs. ‘Earlybird’ knows that the vicious cycle of needing experience to get experience is a challenge worth solving. Charlie’s goals are to create a platform that is safe and transparent for young people and potential employers.
  • Will Thomson has harnessed his skills and experience as a video editor to kickstart ‘Sapphire,’ the ‘Canva’ of video editing. With the rise of video content on social media, workplaces and individuals need videos that are engaging and effective. ‘Sapphire’ helps bridge the gap between the need for content, and the skills required to create it.

These are not just presentations, but living and breathing business ideas that are open to feedback, networking opportunities and funding. If you are interested in learning more about, or assisting with, their projects, please reach out!

Year 8

Oh Captains, my Captains

What an exciting week it has been at Redlands – one of transitions, nostalgia and final moments, as we begin to farewell our current Yr 12 cohort. On Friday, the first big transition occurred with the announcement of our new student leadership team. As became school tradition a couple of years ago, the School gathered in the Liggins Quad to see the new captains being dramatically revealed. The old school bell was rung to bring in the ceremony and many voices cheered, and hands clapped as we learned the identities of the leadership team that will take us through the rest of the year and across 2025. Many of our Yr 8s looked on, no doubt wondering if one day they would be standing there, in front of the School, ready to leave their mark on Redlands history.

Congratulations to all our new leaders but particularly to our House captains and portfolio leaders; we look forward to seeing you lead the school with confidence, compassion and kindness.

Teacher Gratitude – Lessons in Service

Every now and then something really special happens that leaves you with a warm feeling inside and makes you all that bit happier to be at Redlands. On Monday, this appeared through the altruistic actions of the Cowper House girls who came to school bearing endless trays of cakes, cookies, muffins and slices.

As part of our focus on service this term, the girls joined forces and decided to bake a huge array of treats to hand out to teachers across the School, as a demonstration of gratitude for all their teachers have done and continue to do for them. Under the faithful guidance of Ms Wang, they were able to deliver their baked goods to all areas of School, moving from the cleaners and support staff to teacher staffrooms all the way to the Head of School’s office. Their enthusiasm permeated the entire campus! It was such a kind-hearted and generous action, and it really made many of our days!

In their own words, the girls expressed:

We just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your dedication and hard work. As part of Teacher Appreciation Day, we brought in baked goods as a small way to show our gratitude for everything you do. The care and effort you put into teaching us every day truly makes a difference in our lives. We wanted to give back in a sweet way and remind you that your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. The baked treats are just a small token of our appreciation for your patience, kindness, and the way you make learning enjoyable. Thank you again for everything you do for us!

(Vivienne Matthews, on behalf of all the girls in Cowper House)

A huge thank you to all the Yr 8 Cowper girls involved: Michelle Byron, Freya Carrol, Rose Collyer, Jenna Condous, Phoebe Dawson-Damer, Audrey Kwok, Clemence Leroux, Alba Martin-Gomez, Kate Rintoul, Olivia Smith, Sophie Thassim, Deanna Tulsiani, Elisabella Ty, Amelie Wichgers, Ariella Wold, Sarah Yates and Vivienne Matthews.

Thank you also to parents and carers for any help provided in the baking process. Thank you to our Cowper Tutors for encouraging and supporting this initiative. And thank you to Ms Wang for taking the students around the school to make sure all staff were able to have their day brightened by these lovely treats!

Final Student Leader Assembly

On Monday, our Yr 12 student leaders led their final Stage 4 Assembly. It was an emotional affair as our wonderful leaders shared their experiences of moving through secondary school at Redlands, encouraging students to appreciate the opportunities they have within the School and urging them to embrace all the School has to offer to find their true passions and, as their motto has been all year, to ‘step beyond’.

A new award, recognising those who have ‘stepped beyond’ in the sporting world of Redlands, was created by our Sport captains, Alfie and Eva, and its inaugural awarding went to Freja Nixey for her excellent involvement in Basketball, including being on the Firsts as a Yr 8 student. Well done, Freja!

Congratulations also to our Yr 8 Tutor, Ms Busch, who received a teacher ‘step beyond’ award during this assembly, for her excellent support of students across the School.

And the House Debating Victory goes to…

They said it couldn’t be done. Winning House Debating two years in a row! Surely not? It’s never ever been done before! (Note, I have not fact checked this, but it makes it sound dramatic, doesn’t it?)

Well, the History books were well-inked on Wednesday, as McDouall, veterans of last year’s House Debate final, faced off against newcomers, Dumolo.

It was an epic affair as the teams contested valiantly to explore the topic that in NSW parents should NOT have the right to withdraw their children from school education on sexuality and respectful relationships. MacDouall were affirming, while Dumolo negated. Many thoughtful arguments were offered but, in the end, the veterans were that bit more convincing, with MacDouall once again claiming the victory.

Well done to everyone who participated and a huge congratulations to the MacDouall team: Alexis Castan, Felix Davis, Aimee Kang, Cooper Price and Lily van Hulsen.

ISA Athletics

On Tuesday, the ISA Athletics carnival was held with strong representation from a variety of Redlands students. Congratulations to all those students who participated and particularly to the following Yr 8 students who achieved some excellent results and have also qualified for CAS!

  • Lily Musgrave-Kresa: 2nd place in the 14 years girls High Jump (1.30m)
  • Ari Abe-Apostolou F40: 1st place – Shot Put Para Athlete (3.60m) and 1st place – Discus Para Athlete (8.18m)

On 8 December 2023, the United Nations General Assembly, in its seventy-eighth session, unanimously adopted resolution 78/122 “World Cleanup Day”, which proclaims 20 September as World Cleanup Day. The resolution invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, other international and regional organisations, and other relevant stakeholders – including civil society, the private sector and academia – to observe World Cleanup Day through activities aimed at raising awareness of the role clean-up efforts play in sustainable development.

Over the years, many national, regional and local governments and communities have been undertaking clean-up activities globally. World Cleanup Day represents the reflection on their achievements. The clean-ups serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility we share in preserving and maintaining a clean and healthy environment as well as sustainable waste and resources management.

Yr 7 students will be engaging in a school clean-up over the next week and will get hands on making sure our school is a positive environment for everyone. Thank you to Kimberlee Chipper, Redlands Sustainability Manager who has created a wonderful presentation for Friday’s World Clean Up Day and has facilitated the resources to leave our School better than we found it.

Junior Campus Mufti Day

A message from Junior School Captains, Amelie and Pax

To continue our ongoing commitment to support the Wayside Chapel, all Junior Campus students (K-6) can wear mufti to school on Monday 23 September in return for a gold coin donation.

As School Captains, we have been focusing on raising money for Wayside Chapel this year. Our aim is to raise more than any other school for Wayside, which is $4,300. The mufti day in May raised close to $2,000 so we have approximately $2,300 left to raise to reach our goal!

Please remember to wear comfortable shoes and to bring a sun-safe hat.

Junior Campus Buddy Picnic

Our P-6 students are looking forward to the Junior Campus Buddy Picnic on Tuesday 24 September. During lunchtime, our Junior School students will join their Redlands House and Prep buddy classes to eat and play together.

Prep Camp Week

Our Prep Camp Week began with Kindergarten and Year 1 classes enjoying their outdoor education experiences at Clifton Gardens where they built sandcastles, went on scavenger hunts and made nature artwork. Having fun in the sun, working in teams and problem solving was the focus of the day. The mixing up of the classes and making new friends was also very special.

Our Years 1 and 2 students were dazzled by the Capoeira dance troupe from Brazil. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art and game that includes elements of dance, acrobatics, music and spirituality. Students were also lucky enough to be taught some basic moves which was a lot of fun!

We welcomed back Dez, Isaac and Thy from Nyumbar Aboriginal Education Unit. After a water based welcome ceremony, they shared stories from the Tweed Heads area where their mob is from. We learnt that their totem is the stingray which they protect and care for. The girls and boys received the painting of ochre on their faces which represented the stingray swimming in the waterways for the girls while the boys had a line drawn over their nose and cheeks to represent a special mountain in the region which is sacred to men. The children then learnt about specific animal dances and what the movements meant. An incredible learning opportunity for all.

Our OOSH educators joined in the fun of the week and organised an afternoon full of face painting, clay modelling, painting and craft. Such a fun way to demonstrate their creativity and skill!

Wednesday was our Olympic Fun Day with everyone dressed up in the colours of countries around the world. After a very exciting opening ceremony, everyone competed in different activities and had so much fun. At the closing ceremony we learnt about the Olympic medals and what the rings of the Olympic symbol mean. After sharing the accumulated points of the day, France was awarded the gold medal with Brazil not far behind! It was also so lovely to have so many of our families on campus to share in the fun.

This morning we all danced and grooved with the REdEd group. So fabulous to see our Kindergarten and Year 1 students fully engaged and happy as they tried new moves on the dance floor.

Camp Week continues to be a much-anticipated week for Prep. It truly is a very special time where our student get a real taste of outdoor education and experience the fun of activities that challenge them, getting them out of their comfort zone which in turn builds resilience.

Door Drop off for Seniors

As we approach Term 4, we’re excited to implement some changes to help our Seniors get ready for Kindergarten. Starting next term, we kindly ask that parents and families say their goodbyes at the door. This will encourage the children to walk in independently, carrying their own bags. They will then have the opportunity to unpack their belongings and join their teachers and peers in the playground each day. If you’d like to speak with your child’s teacher, please feel free to come inside. Thank you for your support as we help our children grow and prepare for this important transition.

Secondary Sport

As we move to the end of the Term I think it is timely to speak again with regards to the students needs when balancing academics and sports, but this will become even more demanding during Term 4 when students have exam and assessment blocks whilst also managing their. During these times, managing stress, staying organised, and making smart adjustments to schedules can be key to ensuring success in both arenas.

  • Prioritize What’s Most Important
    • One of the first steps students should take during these high-stress periods is to assess their immediate priorities. When exams and sports events overlap, it’s crucial for students to identify which tasks need the most attention. A well-structured approach involves recognising what’s urgent and planning accordingly.
    • Communication is essential here. Students should keep both their coaches and teachers in the loop, ensuring they understand the demands of both schedules. Many coaches are willing to adjust the intensity of practice during exams, and teachers may provide flexible study resources or clarify key topics if needed.
  • Plan for Short, Focused Study Sessions
    • During weeks packed with exams and sporting events, time is often limited. Students can optimise the little time they have for studying by using focused, short study sessions. Time blocking is a helpful method where students dedicate 30 to 45 minutes of focused work followed by a 10 to 15-minute break. This technique enhances productivity without causing burnout.
    • Rather than attempting to cover every subject equally, students should identify which classes pose the biggest challenge or carry the highest stakes, focusing their efforts accordingly. Breaking down exam preparation into smaller sections for daily review also helps prevent the overwhelming stress of cramming.
  • Optimise Rest and Recovery
    • One area students should never overlook during high-pressure periods is rest, especially sleep. While it may be tempting to sacrifice a few hours of sleep to study more or fit in extra practice, this strategy can backfire. Adequate sleep is vital for both academic focus and athletic recovery, and without it, students risk poor performance in both areas.
    • For student-athletes, incorporating light recovery activities like stretching, walking or meditation during study breaks can also be beneficial. It not only helps maintain their physical conditioning but also relieves mental stress, making it easier to stay focused and energized.
  • Streamline Activities
    • During exam weeks and big sporting events, students should take a hard look at their schedule and minimise or temporarily suspend non-essential activities. Whether it’s excessive socialising, gaming or binge-watching TV shows, cutting back on these distractions is important to stay on track with both academics and sports.
    • However, some downtime activities can be paired with studying or light exercise. For instance, listening to recorded lectures while commuting or stretching can allow students to maximize their time without compromising on rest.
  • Leverage Support Systems
    • Secondary school students don’t need to face these high-pressure periods alone. Study groups can be a valuable resource for sharing insights, reinforcing difficult concepts and providing motivation during tough weeks. Additionally, seeking help from teachers, classmates, or even family members can make a significant difference in managing stress and staying on top of both sports and academics.
    • By implementing these strategies, students can navigate the complexities of exam periods and major sports events with greater confidence and success. Proper planning, discipline, and self-care are essential for making the most of these challenging weeks without compromising performance in any area.

Music

Gold! On Sunday, our Combined Intermediate & Advanced Strings ensembles performed at the final weekend of the Australian Band, Strings and Orchestra Festival (ASBOF). For their outstanding performance, they were awarded Gold Award for their division.

We’re so proud of our musicians and their dedication to their preparation, and grateful for their conductor Ms Katherine Moses (Head of Strings P-12), who capably led them.

Yr 12 Final Chapel Service

Our Year 12s were blessed with an emotional performance for their final chapel service. Along with outstanding performances from Sholto Mirlees-Black, Ahnu Guan and other performers for the Congregational Item, representatives from the Junior Voices and Intermediate Choir farewelled our students in a very special way. They sung The Lord Bless You and Keep You by John Rutter – the perfect blessing for this very special cohort.

The Lord bless you and keep you
Make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you
The Lord turn His face toward you
And give you peace

Amen.”

Thank you to Ms Roberts for facilitating this cross-campus farewell.
