Issue 29 2020 - 17 Sep 2020

From the Principal

It has been interesting to note the increased use of the term ‘Grit’ in educational literature in recent years, with educators recognising the significance of perseverance as a quality which has a significant impact on outcomes for students.

In her Building Character series of articles, Jenny Williams defines Grit as “a distinct combination of passion, resilience, determination, and focus that allows a person to maintain the discipline and optimism to persevere in their goals even in the face of discomfort, rejection, and a lack of visible progress for years, or even decades”.

Some students can fall into the trap of thinking that those amongst their peers who excel, only do so because they are naturally gifted. My experience over many years is to the contrary; it is the students who are prepared to delay self-gratification, who continue to persevere when they get knocked back who eventually excel.

One of the challenges in schools is to enlighten our students to the direct correlation between application and outcomes. The implementation of the Effort Awards in the Secondary School this year has enabled a further focus on the importance of strong approaches to learning.

Our Year 12 students have displayed plenty of Grit this year and it has been inspiring to see the way they have faced adversity, challenges and uncertainty. There has been a buzz around the Campus as we approach the end of term and their last days together attending school. I have greatly appreciated and admired their positive outlook and enjoyed seeing them have fun. Spirit Week has further illuminated the heart and soul of the School, which is most impressive and in good health.

Amongst the array of events this week, I have particularly enjoyed the exceptional quality of the Year 12 IB Art Exhibition, with the student work conveying depth of emotion, strength of personality and sharp commentary about the world we share.

Another highlight has been the STEAM days on the Junior Campus. Seeing the students (and staff) so engaged in complex problem solving activities, creative musical and artistic projects and sessions involving collaborative coding was wonderful to witness, and that was just the Year 1 groups! My thanks to all staff involved in making the week possible and for providing such rich learning tasks for our students.

This week we took the opportunity to thank all of the parents, alumni and other members of the Redlands community for their very generous support that made the New Learning Hub possible.

Please enjoy this virtual tour of the New Learning Hub so you can experience for yourself the positive impact this state-of-the-art facility is having on teaching and learning programs in English, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Innovative Design and Visual Arts.

An important feature of the New Learning Hub is the Donor Recognition Wall which is situated at the entrance to Level 2, adjoining Redlands Hall. An organic mosaic of 341 family plaques visually communicates a sense of rhythm and energy through the random placement of soft gold coloured plaques of three different sizes and hues made from Marblo, a translucent polymer marble material.

I look forward to being able to welcome all parents on campus for a physical tour of our wonderful new facilities in the future.

Spirit Week

This week is Spirit Week where our Yr 12 student leaders organise a variety of activities to celebrate our School Spirit in the Arts, Sports and through the Houses. On Tuesday, our Yr 12 Prefects focused their last Prefect Assembly around “school spirit”, and yesterday, our House Spirit was further on display with spirited House dodgeball competitions. Congratulations to Cowper for winning the Junior competition and McDouall for taking out the Senior competition. Today we celebrated our School Spirit through Sports with some games including a friendly staff v Yr 12 students Basketball shooting competition. And on Friday, we celebrate our School Spirit through the Arts with musical performances in Liggins Quad and a highly anticipated Lip Sync Battle. (Rumour has it that a staff team might make an appearance). Friday is also a mufti day for Yr 12 students only where they will be raising money to go towards their Yr 12 Legacy Gift and the Scholarship Fund.

Yesterday evening I was fortunate enough to accompany some of our Yr 12 student leaders as they presented (virtually) to the Redlands Board on their experiences from this year. In my conversation with the students before the presentation, I was struck at how positive they were on this year and that they wanted to ensure they articulated to the Board the positives from this year, despite its many challenges, and how appreciative they were of the many people who have made the events of this year possible for them. This attitude struck me as the embodiment of true School Spirt far more than any cheer squad, sports victory or arts performance ever could and, once again, made me so proud to be a part of this community and to work alongside the inspiring students of Redlands.

Cocurricular Assembly

This afternoon we held our Term 3 Cocurricular Assembly virtually for all students and staff to view. While we know that the cocurricular space has been particularly disrupted because of the Covid-19 restrictions, it was wonderful to hear our Yr 12 student activities leaders reflect so positively on their experiences this year and to see and hear so many of their accomplishments. I congratulate all students for their continued participation in so many different and varied activities at the School and express my gratitude to the many staff who support them along this special journey.

Gala Arts

One event that we are still able to run this year in a modified format is the annual Gala Arts House competition. While we were not permitted to have the usual Term 2 performance at The Concourse, this weekend we will have the finalists across the different disciplines competing for House honours at various venues around School. I wish all competitors the best of luck this weekend and look forward to seeing the final video when it is released next term.

Yr 12s

The banner for the Yr 12s is up in the Liggins courtyard counting down their final days at School. (Although this year is a little bit different as HSC students will return to classes for three days of revision at the beginning of next term while IB students will return for a week of classes in Term 4 before their final examinations.) It is an exciting and emotional time for our senior students as one stage of their life’s journey comes to a close and another one is about to begin. Personally, I have been so impressed by the leadership, thoughtfulness, camaraderie and support this group of Yr 12 students has shown towards each other and the rest of the Secondary School community during this challenging year. As I said to the Yr 12 Captains of Activities and Sports at their Appreciation Breakfast on Tuesday morning, I am sure this is not the year they would have imagined when they stepped into these leadership roles 12 months ago. However, while many of the “big” events they would have led or been involved in have been altered, postponed or cancelled this year, they have excelled as leaders in the “little” things they have done day in and day out to lift the spirits of all staff and students in the Secondary School. This is a wonderful example of the type of exemplary servant leadership which I so often talk about to our students. I could not be prouder of them. I hope all of the Yr 12 students are able to balance their continued preparation for their final examinations with a sense of joy and appreciation of the events planned for them over the next week and into next term to wish them a fitting and fond farewell.

Yr 12 House Morning Teas

One way we have already acknowledged and celebrated our Yr 12 students over the past few weeks is through House Morning Teas. These events have provided an opportunity for the two Tutor Groups in each House to gather to reflect on their time together in the House and/or their Tutor Groups. For many students their first “connection” with Redlands has been through their House and they have had this association from their first day at school – even all the way back to Kindergarten! They have also been together in the same Tutor Groups from the beginning of Yr 7 (or from whenever they individually started their Redlands journey). It was wonderful to hear the Heads of House and the House Captains from the four Houses share their individual reflections on this special connection to the School as Yr 12s come to the end of their Redlands journey.

Yr 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition

Last night was the official opening of the Yr 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition in Redlands Hall. The exhibition showcases not only the talents, but also the effort, dedication and discipline of our Yr 12 IB Visual Arts students who have produced works of amazing quality. Like everything this year, the creation of the students’ major works has been disrupted due to Covid-19, as during remote learning, many Yr 12 students’ homes were turned into art studios so they could continue to work on their pieces remotely! Still, it was wonderful to see the thoughtfulness, creativity and talent on display in their final exhibitions last night, and I hope each student feels immeasurable pride with their creations. A special thank you to the staff and parents who have supported these Visual Arts students on this journey. We look forward to making a visual tour of the exhibition available to parents next week.

Thursday 24 September

Next Thursday 24 September will be the last day of classes in Term 3 for students as we will be holding a staff professional learning day on Friday 25 September. Please note that there will be no after school sports training on Thursday 24 September. We will send out a notification of the finish time for next Thursday.

Chaplain

Yr 8 have been submitting creative works reflecting on the nature and identity of Jesus.

‘Who is Jesus?’, is a life question that is posed to each generation since Jesus himself addressed this to Peter. The gospels were written by four different disciples openly answering this question by presenting the life of Jesus, climaxing with his death and resurrection.

The historical evidence for Jesus is of the highest academic integrity, enabling good research to answering this question. The existence of Jesus and the accuracy of the New Testament accounts are the closest we get to fact in history. The textual reliability, the archaeological evidence, the non-Christian documents confirming details, all provide good evidence for the historicity of the New Testament’s account of Jesus of Nazareth. Yr 8 students have been reading for themselves the Gospel of Mark and have been repeatedly surprised to discover the tone, the details, the responses of people and the complexity of the historical period. It is great that they are seeing the details for themselves rather than relying on what people say about the bible. Going back to the primary sources is a valuable thing to do to intelligently respond to this question.

However answering this question is not just an academic question as it touches nature of reality. One inescapable aspect of reading the gospel is that Jesus, himself, claimed to be God in person. His life and teaching show that he is not a lunatic nor that he had delusions of grandeur but rather was a man of humility, full of compassion and integrity. His actions as described by the eyewitnesses seem to confirm the reality of extraordinary power, not magic but real majesty, supernatural actually miraculous. Some students were taken aback discovering the Gospel showed many people at the time who were sceptical and yet were convinced by the evidence. So Jesus challenges our ideas of the existence of God and nature of God, offering himself as exhibit A.

The student’s offering used a spectrum of mediums: art, poetry, dance, creative writing, photography, digital and sculpture. Each needed to consider Mark’s presentation and reflect it in their creative work. Essential to their submission was the explanations of their thinking including a personal conclusion.

Our hope is that our students will have a better grasp of the real Jesus, the biblical Jesus. Perhaps now is a good time for all of us to take some time to read the gospels and ponder Jesus and the question that has transformed lives through the centuries and today: ‘Who do you say that I am?’

Year 11

We are one week away from our mid semester break and there is still much going on for our Yr 11 students. On Saturday, bright and early, I was fortunate to meet our Yr 11 Touch Football Girls at Macquarie Uni and watch their selection games. Our Drama students have been rehearsing outdoors and our Visual Arts students have been excited to view the Yr 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition. Yesterday, we all enjoyed a mufti day to celebrate Redlands Spirit Week. In Tutor Time, we have marked RUOK? Day and spent time collaborating on videos to farewell our Yr 12 students. Students have been supported by the Yr 11 Pastoral team, as they have received their examination results and I have been touched by the kindness of many students as they have supported each other in recent days. It is clear that our students are continuing to grow and develop into mature, kind and interested young adults. It continues to be the best part of my role to witness the strengths of these super young people.

Year 10

Week 8

This has been a busy week for students as they have spent time beginning to acknowledge the Yr 12 students as their time at school comes to an end, recording a short video to farewell the cohort. Week 9 is traditionally Spirit Week when Yr 12s celebrate their time at Redlands with a different theme each day; however, due to current restrictions some of those events have needed to change this year. Despite this, there has been a Prefect Spirit Assembly over Zoom on Tuesday, followed by a House colours themed mufti day on Wednesday and a dodgeball competition. Thursday involved a number of sports focused activities, such as a skipping competition and a basketball shooting competition. On Friday, there will be a number of performing arts activities for the students to be involved in or watch. It is great that as a school we are still able to celebrate this momentus occasion for Yr 12. It is hard to believe that our Yr 10s will be at this stage in just two years time!

End of Year Exminations

As we are approaching the end of Term 3, Yr 10 should be beginning to consider their preparation for their end of year examinations in Week 3, Term 4. Students have been using this term to learn the importance of planning their schedule each week, through the use of a termly and weekly planner. It would be a good time to check-in with your child and have a conversation about exam preparation and how they are going to effectively use their upcoming holidays to not only enjoy themselves but also begin their revision process. In Week 10 this term, Tutors will begin assisting the students in their preparation and will provide resources and advice.

Prue Salter’s Study Tips

With the end of term fast approaching take the time these holidays to reflect on what is ahead in the last term.

  • Should you be making some study notes?
  • Are there areas of difficulty you should address?
  • What do you want to achieve both academically and personally?

Thursday 24 September

Yr 9 Exams

The Yr 9 exam block kicks off in Term 4 Week 4. Examination notifications may start to be released prior to the end of term. The holiday period is a fantastic opportunity to ensure study notes are up-to-date, ready for examinations in Term 4. Wanting to know how to help your child study? A really good analogy is that studying is like playing a sport. If you want to learn a sport you have to first learn the rules of the sport, then you have to practise the skills of the sport. It is the same with study, students have to learn the content then practise the skills of the subject. Students should:

  • Spend time learning and memorising the information by writing study notes then testing themselves on their study notes in a way that suits their learning style.
  • Do lots and lots of practice. Find as many questions as possible and try them. They should then mark their answers then spend time reviewing the areas they are having difficulty with.
  • Talk to other students to see what they do to study for their subjects.

The Study Skills Handbook (UN: redlands | PW: 68results) has useful resources on Active Studying and Preparing for Exam Blocks (starting with the summary sheets is always useful). The Redlands Study Centre is also a useful resource (the timetable can be found on Redlands Pulse).

Spirit Week

This week was Yr 12 Spirit Week –  Yr 12’s opportunity to celebrate their final weeks of school with the school community. Throughout the week, Yr 12 hosted a student led assembly, a House dodgeball competition, sports competitions, performing arts events and a House mufti day on Wednesday. Congratulations to Cowper for winning the Yr 9 Dodgeball competition. Thank you, Yr 12 – we send our warmest wishes as you prepare for your final examinations and life beyond school.

Inappropriate Content Online

A message from Brett Lee, Co-founder of InternetSafeEducation.com

Inappropriate content can readily and unpredictably reach young people through many different platforms. We need to remain active and vigilant in monitoring what young people are exposed to in their online world, which is very much their real world.

Inappropriate content can reach students on any platform, including but not limited to websites, social media sites or video content sharing sites. Common sites used by children include: Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube and Youtube for Kids.

What to do now and in the future as a preventative measure?

Parents and carers need to be especially vigilant. Firstly, we recommend having a clear family tech agreement and staying up-to-date with current online trends. There is no way of knowing what online platform algorithms will serve up – it’s up to you to moderate.

Secondly, if you do come across any inappropriate content, report and flag immediately. Advice is to report to the platform (eg. TikToK) and to the eSafety Commission. Advice can be found at How to report illegal harmful content?

Thirdly, consider using monitoring software to manage time online, apps being accessed and to also filter inappropriate websites.

Finally, and most importantly, make sure to talk to the children in your care about the things they are doing online. Communication is by far the best defence against these modern trends of inappropriate content sharing. Create an environment of openness about technology and discuss it regularly.

Remember:

  • Don’t panic
  • Report to social media platform
  • Report to eSafety
  • Talk to your child
  • You have a right to manage technology which includes temporarily removing access

Yr 8 End of Year Key Information

Students will start receiving their Yearly Examination notifications before term break. The Yr 8 exam block is Term 4 Week 4. Currently, the Yr 8 Camp is scheduled for Term 4 Week 5. More information regarding camp will be coming out soon.

This Week

Last Thursday, our incredible Yr 12 leaders and two amazing counsellors, Tanya Fullerton and Lara Luitingh, put together a video that shed light on the importance of asking a friend “R U OK?” and the follow on to that conversation to properly take care of yourself as a concerned friend and to support your friend who might be in need of professional help. Lara and Tanya focused on acknowledging the care and concern students have for one another, the importance of involving a trusted adult and the need to keep yourself healthy and strong while also showing compassion and support for your friend in need. The full length interview with our School Counsellors will soon be linked in the iLearn Secondary School Counselling page for students and parents to access.

In Yr 8, we continue this week exploring the various aspects of wellbeing, resilience and happiness. In these last few weeks of Term 3 and beginning of Term 4, we will delve into Rational Thinking, Mindfulness and Gratitude.

Internet Addiction

For children and teenagers, there is no doubt that the Internet can be an excellent resource for information, communication and entertainment, but more and more Australian parents are concerned about excessive time online.

Today’s youth are the early settlers in a remarkable new world. Unfortunately, parents feel as though they are shut out of this world, often not knowing, nor understanding, what happens in this online environment.

It is up to parents to monitor, not just what their children do online, but also the length of time they spend online. Many of the online game’s children play have parental controls. However, parents do not always choose to use them. Banning is not the answer. A better strategy is to give kids access, but be informed, set some rules, monitor and supervise. To ignore this responsibility could create significant psychological and social problems for their children in years to come.

Mufti Day – Thursday 24 September

In further support of wellbeing, our teachers have planned some special activities for the last day of this term, next Thursday 24 September. As well as these sessions, students will be allowed to wear mufti on this day and the afternoon will focus on fun, celebration and connection with each other.

End of Term 3 – Thursday 24 September

Parents are reminded that the last day of Term 3 is next Thursday 24 September as we have a full day of staff professional learning here the following day. Students should wear their summer school uniform from the start of Term 4, which is Monday 12 October.

Full STEAM Ahead!

At the start of the week, our Junior School students enjoyed a highly engaging series of activities centred around the STEAM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. The interconnected area of STEAM has been a focus for Redlands for a number of years, particularly with its relevance to real-world problem solving.

At this time of the year, we have normally hosted an event in partnership with industry professionals and external presenters which simply wasn’t viable this year. However, our teachers needed no second invitation to step up and lead a range of sessions and in many ways, I saw greater connection and impact with the students and I loved spending time in nearly every session over the two days.

It was inspiring to see the unadulterated joy, total engagement and high levels of curiosity and problem-solving amongst the students and also observe how they overcame challenges with a strong collaborative mindset.

In particular, I acknowledge Ms Anagnostu’s passionate and creative leadership of the event alongside her meticulous planning and her support of colleagues. I also want to express my gratitude to our large group of staff workshop facilitators and blog contributors who spent additional time to prepare and lead these high-quality learning experiences for our students, which I know the students loved.

Another aspect of this event that was different this year was to see how we could connect with our parent community, so we hope that the blog for your child’s Year Group that has been sent to you via email today will spark some conversations at home about the event too.

Camp Activity Days

After the unmitigated success of Yr 3’s on-site camp day, Yr 4 also enjoyed a wonderful range of outdoor learning experiences led by our normal camp providers, the Outdoor Education Group. Supporting a sense of student problem-solving and collaboration, the Yr 4 students enjoyed overcoming a range of challenges and initiatives here on campus and we look forward to Yr 5 having their day of activities tomorrow.

House Cross Country Carnival

Our annual House Cross Country Carnival took place today with the revised plan with each Year Group heading to the course at Cammeray Golf Club for their respective race and then coming back to school before the next Year Group headed out. I managed to get out to see some of the early races and despite the warmer weather, the students were enjoying the opportunity to compete for their House with and against friends.

What’s My Parent’s Phone Number?

889 7073. My home telephone number growing up in England seems to be indelibly marked on my brain and along with my home address, these were important pieces of potential emergency information that my parents passed on to me at an early age. So how would your child get in touch with you if they needed to for some reason and did not have immediate access to a mobile phone where details like these are simply a touch away. Through different contexts, we have seen Junior School students not knowing the answer to these questions so it might be something to check in with your child and see that they do have the right answers if ever required.

Staffing News

As previously communicated, we say farewell to our Dean of Students, Mrs Sam Kourakis, at the end of the term. Over her time here, Sam has been of exceptional support for students, colleagues and families. Sam’s care for students and vision for student wellbeing have been instrumental in shaping the School’s direction in this aspect of education and we wish her all the best in her new Student Wellbeing Advisor role with the Association of Independent Schools of NSW.

We also say farewell to Mrs Hilary Luck, who is moving to a music leadership role at Abbotsleigh School next term. Hilary has led the considerable growth of the Junior Campus Music program over the last seven years and her commitment to the development of both student engagement and enjoyment has seen exceptional performances involving every Junior School students, most notably in our annual Junior Music Festival and Speech Days.

I know that you will join me in wishing them all the very best and we will confirm their replacements in next week’s Note Day.

Wellbeing Matters

As Term 3 draws to a close, our wellbeing workshops across the campus are focusing on the theme of ‘hope’. Studies have found that hope and overall wellbeing are closely connected as the way we perceive the future can greatly affect how we feel in the present.

Teachers will be encouraging our students to identify hopeful thoughts for themselves, their family and our community. We will then put our messages of hope onto spring blossoms and create a mural in each section of our Junior Campus, which I know will have great visual impact as we end the term.

The Bear Cottage and Kids Cancer Project Fundraiser

We are looking forward to tomorrow’s joint fundraiser for both Bear Cottage and The Kids’ Cancer Project; charities that our Redlands community has had a strong affinity and personal connection with in recent years.

Students have been provided with information in class this week on merchandise for sale (correct money preferred) and students are also encouraged to wear crazy socks with their school uniform! Times to purchase items will also be staggered for students to avoid large mixed age groups gathering for extended periods of time.

Item Cost
Clip on Bear             $3
Pen                           $3
Supporter Pin          $3
Plush keyring          $5
Handballs                $3
Tattoos                    $1
Gold ribbon pins     $2
Sunglasses              $3
Teddy Bear $5
Wristbands $1

We hope our community can come together to continue to support and raise awareness of these two special causes.

‘Redlands Spirit of Christmas’ Card Competition

We are delighted to announce that Redlands will celebrate the Christmas spirit by showcasing our students’ creativity through a range of Christmas cards featuring art from our talented Junior and Preparatory School students. Connected to this initiative, we are thrilled that this competition will support the Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker Appeal, a wonderful cause that Redlands has had a longstanding association with.

Submissions of student artworks which can be a drawing, painting, mixed media or digital art, together with a short description of the image, will close on Wednesday 14 October (Week 1, Term 4).

All Junior School students should hand entries directly to Mrs Fairfax in the Junior School office.

Artworks should showcase what Christmas means to our students and students should select their inspiration from the following themes:

  1. An Australian Christmas – bush, beach, BBQ, summer holidays
  2. Christian images – The nativity, baby Jesus, Three Wise Men
  3. My family Christmas – students depicting what Christmas looks like at their house/in their family/in their culture
  4. Favourite Christmas meal/food/snack

Ten artworks will then be selected and featured in this year’s ‘Redlands Spirit of Christmas’ card set which will be available for our School community to purchase in Term 4.

Please join us to create some Christmas spirit for our broader community!

Calendar Updates

Friday 18 September Yr 2 STEAM Day
Monday 21 September Yr 1 Caines Arcade
Thursday 24 September

Last day of Term 3
Prep Sports Day
Afternoon Fun Activities

Games Day and a Special Afternoon

In further support of wellbeing, our teachers have planned a special movie afternoon following Games Day on Thursday 24 September. Students will be allowed to wear mufti on this day with a colour from their Houses if they can. The House shields and their colours can be found on page 7 of the Student Planners.

The focus of the day will be on games, teamwork, fun, celebration and connection with each other. Prep students must remember to wear hats and running shoes as well as sleeves to cover their shoulders in the sun. In the session after lunch, the children will push back their tables and chairs and sit on the floor to watch a movie together. They can bring in a special cushion, pillow or soft toy for this session too if they’d like. We hope these activities and wellbeing themes build our students’ sense of belonging and connection to each other and our Redlands community. We’re all so proud of them!

STEAM Week

What an exciting few days we have had in the Prep with the annual STEAM Day activities taking place. On Wednesday and Thursday, our Yr 1 and Kindergarten students were engaged in hands on challenging activities that included coding, engineering skills, music creation and finding the treasure by coding BeeBots. As I walked around, a hum of activity and busy conversations were taking place as students asked questions, experimented, took risks to find a solution but most of all had fun with the activities. Days like these are always a wonderful reminder about the resilience and the enthusiasm that our young learners demonstrate when engaged in their learning.

Morning Car Drop off line

Please be aware that there is no parking allowed when dropping off students in the mornings at the Allister Street drop off zone in front of the Prep School. Each morning we have a staff member assisting with opening car doors and placing bags on backs for our young students. Please have your child’s bag ready on their lap or in a space available for the staff member to access. If you do need to exit your car and walk your child to the gate, please park in surrounding streets and walk in. These measures have been put in place to ensure the steady flow of traffic in the mornings. Thank you for your assistance .

Lunchtime Clubbin’

Facilitated by our Chaplain and School Counsellors, Redlands Friendship and Lego Clubs are tailored for Yrs K-2, providing students with the opportunity to engage in creative play during lunchtimes and explore friendships with peers who perhaps they would not regularly play with on the playground. It is a calm and quiet space for children who perhaps find the playground at times overwhelming to navigate, or for students who simply just want to unwind and hang out during their break undercover.

At Lego Club (Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes in the OOSH Room), students can explore the possibilities of creativity and problem solving while having fun, and can choose to work independently or with a group to design their Lego interventions. The power of Lego is that it helps children to bond, encourages teamwork and communication whilst building, and enhances important skills such as problem solving, persistence and sharing.

At Friendship Club (Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes outside the Yr 2 classrooms), students can play games with one another, make puzzles, draw freely, or do mindful drawing with handouts provided. Mingling with peers helps to enhance the students’ social skills and build on their confidence, allowing them to expand their social circles and build connections that they might not otherwise have made.

The rules of our Lunchtime Clubs are to line up by the Prep Reception and come with a big smile and enthusiastic attitude!

Seven Steps to Writing Professional Development

This week all staff from P-6 participated in the first training session of Seven Steps to Writing program. This is the new writing program that we will be embedding into our writing programs next year. Seven Steps is a program that empowers teachers to inspire their students to rapidly improve their writing skills and more importantly, learn to love writing. Over the next few weeks you may hear your child come home discussing sizzling starts, ban the boring, exciting endings and tightening tension! If you do hear these words, ask them what they mean!

Wellbeing Matters

As Term 3 draws to a close, our wellbeing workshops across the campus will focus on ‘hope’. Studies have found that hope and overall wellbeing are closely connected, as the way we perceive the future can greatly affect how we feel in the present. Students will be encouraged to identify hopeful thoughts for themselves, their family and our community. We’ll be putting our messages of hope onto spring blossoms and creating a mural in each section of our Junior Campus.

Secondary Sport

Head of Secondary Sport

Failure IS an Option!

It is natural for a young student athlete to fear “failing” in sport. After all, it usually takes place in a public arena with spectators full of parents or peers and results are often publicised for many to see. Combine this with public practices and training sessions and sport is an activity where your effort, and your outcomes from that effort, are visible for all to see.

However, how do we define “failure” in sport? And what does it mean to us?

Many think failure is losing? Achieving a lower placing than the previous competition or game. These measurements of success or failure do not take into account the growth and development of a young athlete and are based on external factors such as other competitors.

To me failure in sport is not fulfilling your potential and must be viewed as part of the development process of a young person. A great quote by author Daniel Pink reflects this sentiment,

“The greater risk is to fear failure more than mediocrity for yourself. To give up through fear of failure on being the best you can possibly be in your chosen pursuits.“

Know what your best is, know how to improve your best and continue to learn how to improve your best is a true description of determination, grit and ultimately success.

This learning process is observable in the way that athletes approach their training and practice. There is a willing attitude and drive to perfect their abilities. If results, games and times are not as they had hoped, a learning process immediately begins. This may be implicit (self-talk) or explicit (communicated to a coach or teammate).

The steps of the process usually involve the following which are broken into four As:

  • The ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: That isn’t my best outcome?
  • The ANALYSIS: Why did this happen?
  • The ACTION: What is the solution to this problem?
  • The AWARENESS: When? And where will this action take place? And what will it look and feel like?

Students must be able to find a solution to their problems and know how to improve the outcome. If they cannot work the answer out they start questioning the coach for it…relentlessly. They have a drive to invest effort in order to improve again and again. These are great qualities to have in life and can be developed through sport.

As a young school-based athlete, this is the place where you learn and develop these skills. Perceived “failures” are important parts of our path and where we want that path to take us. In a way, success is not built on previous success, it is built on failure.

Sport is not a level playing field. Sometimes you may be the best you can be and still lose the competition, however the lessons learnt through self-exploration in the process are more valuable than any medal, trophy, team selection or award.

Important

There will be no sport on Thursday 24 September, the last day of Term 3. Further details regarding student departures on this day can be seen in the Head of Secondary School section.

Basketball

Teams will be announced on Monday 21 September on Redlands Pulse and the Sports Noticeboard in the Liggins Quad . There will be no Basketball training in Week 10 other than the 1st V Boys and Girls on Tuesday afternoon.

Tennis

Summer Tennis trials and training continue this week. As we move into the summer months, please ensure students bring a hat and their own water bottle to each training session as bubblers are currently unavailable. Sunscreen is available at most venues which students are encouraged to use.

There is no Tennis on Saturday 19 September.

During the upcoming school holidays there are a number of opportunities for students to play Tennis. Our coaching provider Grand Slam Tennis are offering a Tennis Camp on Wednesday 7, Thursday 8 and Friday 9 October. Students currently in Groups 1 and 2 should register for the High-Performance Camp and students currently in Groups 3 and 4 should register for the Development Camp. It is a great opportunity to participate in extended training sessions focusing on fitness, technical skills, tactical awareness and footwork through high intensity drills and match and point play.

Our Summer Tennis competition organisation, NSTA, are hosting a UTR event on Saturday 4 October for Tennis players who fall into the U14 age group only. Interested students are encouraged to register for the NSTA UTR event . Please note, this is not a school event but will be great opportunity to play competitive tennis against other tennis players of similar ability.

Just a reminder, all illness and injuries are to be communicated via email to Eliza Peirce. Please do not attend trainings if unwell.

Touch Football

Please note Touch Football teams will be announced on Monday 21 September. There will only be training on Tuesday 22 September for the players named in the 1st VI and Junior A teams.

Junior School Sport Information

Wednesday Sport

In exciting news, our regular Rep Sport and Non-Rep sport are planned to resume on Wednesday 14 October (Term 4 Week 1).

With Summer Sport trials complete, classes were divided into teams for an interclass challenge taking on each other in Basketball and Football. Teams were split on the class rolls alphabetically and there were some very competitive classes on both court and field. The overall winner from each Year Group will be announced at the end of next week’s games.

Term 4 Draw Structure

Due to current COVID-19 protocols, both IPSHA and HICES (the organisations we belong to for Saturday Sport) have constructed a draw that keeps schools in zones and in stages. The parameters that they had to operate in to cater for schools with varying numbers of teams and sports has had a massive impact upon the draw. For example, it has created a larger number of byes where there is no opposition to play in that particular round. Previously these byes would not exist as there would be a greater number of schools to play but this is not the case in Term 4.

Redlands has been allocated into the Harbour Zone and includes Mosman Prep, St Aloysius College, Shore and St Ignatius College for all our IPSHA Sports. For our Girls Basketball teams who play in HICES their draw will be released shortly.

Sport Calendar

For all other changes please see the updated Term 1 calendar that can be found here 2020 Junior School Sport Calendar.

Term 4 Team Lists

Students/parents/caregivers are asked to refer to these team lists towards the end of the week so you are aware of any changes the coaches have made after training and or games.

Team Movements

This will continue to occur but the aim is now to make the process more transparent for all parties as unexplained team movements sometimes cause unnecessary stress.

Training Schedule

Wednesday is our primary training day for our Summer Sport. Throughout the term there are also optional morning training sessions on offer for students in Representative Sport to attend. Please note these are now based in stages with Yrs 3 and 4 on Wednesday morning and Yrs 5 and 6 on Friday morning for Basketball. These sessions will only continue if they are well attended by students across both days

The Summer Training schedule can be located on the Sports page on Redlands Pulse. Please click here to view the current Term 4 Summer Sport Training Schedule.

Term 4 Draw

The Sports draw can be found shortly on the Junior School Sport page on Redlands Pulse.  This draw is ‘live’ in nature with updates occurring as we receive them from host schools. Please do not print the draw out for this reason. The meeting times for matches remains unchanged, with students requiring to meet their coaches 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the match.

Uniforms

Redlands students will need to ensure they are in the correct uniform. Please refer to this link for all information relating to what uniform is required for Saturday matches.

Absences from Saturday Sport

For those students who are representing Redlands in fixtures on Saturdays and will miss their game due to illness or misadventure, parents/carers are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport page on Redlands Pulse.

Home Venues

This venue directory will assist you in locating grounds and schools for Saturday morning matches. Please be aware that the following venues are classified as ‘home’ venues for the listed sports.

  • Redlands House Courts and Dunnet Hall – Mixed Basketball, Girls Basketball
  • Redlands Oval – Touch Football
  • Macquarie University playing fields – Touch Football
  • Cammeray Tennis Centre – Tennis

Commitment

As you are aware Redlands students can elect to play either a Non-Representative Sport that has no Saturday morning component to it or they may select a Representative Sport which comes with a Saturday morning component. For those families who elect to participate in our Representative sport program, we expect commitment for the duration of the season. Part of the commitment to sport is the fun factor, turning up with your friends to play a sport they both love. It’s a great physical release. It teaches teamwork. It teaches overcoming adversity. It teaches how to lose. It teaches how to win. But for these elements to occur, commitment itself is the most important component. We understand that sickness can easily be a preventative factor for participation, but we ask that you fill in the absentee form to let us know that your child is unwell ahead of time. We want to avoid the situation which occurred in Winter where Redlands teams played other schools with half a team due to unexplained absences on game day.

Right Place, Right Time, Right Equipment

It is my aim for all Redlands Junior School students to follow these three guidelines when they are playing sport, be it Representative Sport or Non-Representative Sport.

We need students to ensure they are at the venue 30 minutes before the scheduled start time in correct uniform with the correct equipment.

At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY: in direct comparison to other students on the team

ATTENDANCE: any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE: this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to sport.

Music

Thinking Routines in the Kindergarten Classroom

In Music lessons this term, Kindergarten students have discovered similarities and differences between two known songs, Bye-Lo and Seesaw. All classes used a Same and Different Thinking Routine to explore the songs, with responses being recorded on the poster in the Prep Music room. Students used wonderful musical language including beat, rhythm, so and mi to describe the music.
