Issue 28 2024 Term 3 Week 8 - 12 Sep 2024

From the Principal

Today is R U OK? Day – a national day of action encouraging all of us to meaningfully connect with people around us and check in with them to see if they are OK. This simple act can be the first step to assist those around us who might be struggling with some of the challenges of life.

This week it was wonderful to see our student wellbeing leaders in both the Junior School and the Secondary School assemblies share some of their reflections and insights on R U OK? Day and encourage their peers to reach out to their friends and classmates, not just on one day of the year, but every day of the year.

At Redlands one of our strengths is supporting the wellbeing of all the students under our care throughout every stage of their educational journey. Pleasingly, students have a multitude of adults at school who they are able to reach out to for support – whether it is teachers, tutors, coaches, pastoral care staff, counsellors or school leaders.

Our wellbeing program is underpinned by our Redlands Student Wellbeing Framework, a whole school approach to social emotional learning embedded in a continuous curriculum across P-12. This framework provides a clear roadmap for wellbeing with specific outcomes for each stage of a student’s development across the five areas of social emotional learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making.

As a school, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our students is our highest priority and it is pleasing to see us supporting them in so many different ways.

Tournament of the Minds

Last Sunday at UNSW, two Redlands teams competed in Tournament of Minds (TOM), an international educational program framed around the motto of “challenging the world” to develop creative responses to open-ended challenges. Congratulations to our Year 7 and 8 team who were awarded Honours (2nd place) in the Arts Challenge at the Sydney North Regional Final, where they showcased a range of musical, artistic and dance skills to bring to life the story of a living local person in their community. This team interviewed and were given permission to retell the incredible story of Lachlan Carter’s (Yr 8) grandfather, a Cambodian refugee who fled the Khmer Rouge to Australia in the 1970s. Lachlan was a Year 8 member of the award-winning team. I also congratulate our Year 9 team who put together an excellent performance in the Social Science Challenge. For further details on this fantastic achievement, I encourage you to read about their success in the Years 7, 8 and 9 sections of Note Day.

National Snowsport Interschools

Well done to our Snowsports team of 30 students from Years 1-12 who contested the National Snowsports Interschools at Perisher last week, achieving the following podium places:

Silver:
Div 1 Boys Moguls team
Div 1 Girls Ski Cross – Aibe Elsworth

Bronze:
Div 1 Girls Alpine GS team
Div 1 Girls Snowboard GS team

To read more about our Snowsports team’s achievements, please see the Secondary School Sport section of Note Day.

Community Update

Excitement continues to build for our highly anticipated Festival of Redlands that will take place on Saturday 19 October on our Junior Campus. Our Festival of Redlands will shine a light on 140 years of the School, highlighting our rich and diverse culture, growth, talent and community. From 1-5pm, the Festival will showcase Performing Arts, Sports, Academics, Visual Arts, Innovative Design and Outdoor Education and feature an international food extravaganza and a House Challenge. More information can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day, along with information on the wide range of other parent and carer events that continue to connect our community.

Redlands is proud to be part of Lifeblood Teams, the group donation program from Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. Aside from saving lives through blood donation, Lifeblood Teams is about being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s a unique opportunity for all of us to band together and give something more powerful than money. Donated blood can be used to help people in all sorts of life-giving ways. The need is constant and the person receiving it could be fighting cancer or going through a difficult pregnancy, or they could be someone who relies on regular transfusions to stay healthy — or even, stay alive. Now that’s something worth uniting for! There’s nothing like knowing you’ve genuinely helped someone, and this can be achieved by registering to join the Redlands School Lifeblood Team here.

The Redlands Parents’ Prayer Group provides our current parent community with the opportunity to come together in prayer. We invite you to join our Chaplains and Principal for our Term 3 gathering on Tuesday 17 September from 5.30 to 6.30pm in the Staff Room (2nd Floor) in the Liggins Building on the Senior Campus. Light refreshments will be provided, during an informal time of fellowship and prayer. Please extend this invitation to any other parents or families you think would appreciate being included.

A reminder that clean pre-loved uniforms can be purchased at the Second Uniform Sale that will take place tomorrow. This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund. Further details can again be found in the RPFA section of today’s Note Day.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Year 12 House Morning Tea with Redlanders

It was wonderful to celebrate with Year 12, Head of House and Executive at the annual House Morning Teas this week. Each event was attended by past House Captains and students were presented with a special Redlands Rhino as a token of their journey at Redlands. This gift serves as a reminder of their place within our Redlands community. Messages of support and the importance of staying connected with each other beyond the school gates were shared and we wish all students the very best over the coming weeks, and in their journeys after they graduate from Redlands.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books. If you would like to join Book Club, and learn where we are meeting this month or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our next meeting will be during the week of 28 October, when we will be discussing Safe Haven by Shankari Chandran.

Seen a book you’re dying to read and discuss? Recommend it for our next read!

Kids Giving Back

Kids Giving Back is hosting a mega cooking marathon on 22 September. As the children prepare meals for Sydneysiders in need, they can have fun with friends and bring to life their school values of moral courage and compassion. If you are interested in keeping the kindness cooking – please contact Daniella.

Behind the Scenes with the RPFA: Meet your Class Parents

A wonderful group of volunteers, Class Parents are in place from Redlands House all the way up to Yr 12. Their efforts in welcoming new parents, organising teacher celebrations and facilitating class social events go a long way in maintaining the connected and engaged school community we enjoy here at Redlands.

Check back here each week to meet 2024 Class Parents and discover how you can get involved!

CP Five

Name: Anita Fonseca

Role: Class Parent 1R & volunteer coding lunch club

Kids: Matteo 1R & Stella Redlands House senior

If you could choose a Class Parent theme song what would be the title name?

We are the Champions! I think it motivates me and my kids.

Why did you decide to become a Class Parent, and what do you love most about it?

Because no one else volunteered, someone’s gotta keep it fun! (haha) I was class parent for my son’s Kindy class, I think that qualified me to do it for a second round. It’s a meaningful way to contribute to Matteo’s school experience and I hope to build a supportive community. I love coordinating events and bringing the community together, helping all parents to feel inclusive and supported.

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the School?

Jump in! Attend school events, volunteer for small tasks. It is so important and rewarding. It’s a chance to build relationships, support your child’s learning environment and make a lasting impact on your child’s experience. My son is super excited and proud when I come in on Fridays and run the lunch club with another amazing class parent, Daniella from 1Y.

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

Good questions – I think I would love to experience recess, being a kid again, playing and running on the oval, hanging out with lots of friends every day without a care in the world. I would like to find out what is so fascinating about Pokemon cards! Seriously, I’d want to experience the world through their eyes – the simple excitement of seeing your friends every morning, learning new things every day and embracing curiosity and creativity – powerful reminders that often get lost in adulthood.

Learning Experiences

Yr 11 have approached their examinations with maturity and calmness this week, as Yr 12 conclude their final lessons before the end of the term and celebrate with their House peers at the House Morning teas, which have taken place for them at Tutor time each day this week. It’s been a joy to hear from House Captains and Redlanders from the past few graduating years who have returned to provide advice and encouragement to the Class of 2024.

It’s been great to hear the joy in the students’ conversations about the cocurricular and sport dinners they’ve been attending in the evenings and see them prepare for the start of the Summer Sport season. Yr 7, 8 and 9 are travelling well in the lead up to the end of term and aware their Term 4 examination blocks are on the horizon. It’s certainly a productive time of the term and the learning buzz on campus is palpable as students consolidate and extend themselves across a variety of spheres.

Tomorrow we announce the Student Leadership Body for the 2024/2025 academic year. We had a significant number of students nominate for a student leadership position this year and were overwhelmed by the talent, passion and commitment to School and service during the application process. While this time is one of celebration, especially for those elected into formal positions, it can also surface feelings of disappointment, upset and even anger, for those not selected. A range of emotions is typical and normal. We lean into our processes and support mechanisms at this time and encourage parents who have concerns about their child’s wellbeing to normalise these feelings and make contact with the Year Advisor or Dean of Students for additional support.

Student and Community Safety Update – Stay in Place Drill

Evacuation and Stay in Place drills are an essential part of our safety and risk management practices at School.

We treat drills as if they are real and model our response to the students as a learning exercise. In the Secondary School, the students are excellent at drills. They respond appropriately and calmly and I always feel so privileged to lead the community when I see how maturely the students approach an evacuation.

In the coming weeks we will be holding a Stay in Place drill, formerly known as a ‘lockdown’. Many things can prompt a Stay in Place but in essence, a Stay in Place occurs when there is a real or perceived danger to the School site, and a Stay in Place is a measure to enhance student and staff safety.

A clear procedure exists for us to navigate a Stay in Place drill and our students know the secret message that is relayed to them which is a signal to adopt ‘stay in place’ measures. There are also clear processes for communicating with students after the drill the purposes of the drill and the affirmation they are safe. Year Advisors know when the drill will take place and usually have key information about students so they can support anyone who may feel excessively heightened or unable to manage their distress. If you would like to provide any additional context as to why your teenager may need additional support to navigate this drill, then please reach out to the Year Advisor before the end of this week.

Redlands SS School Climate Survey Summary (Post-Survey)

This term, Redlands Secondary School conducted an anonymous School Climate Survey among students in Years 7–11 (optional for Year 12) on the Cremorne campus, achieving an 85% response rate. The survey aimed to gather feedback on the school environment, unwanted behaviours and positive student contributions.

Key findings indicated that students are enjoying their school experience. Unsurprisingly, most students are enjoying socialising during breaks, while physical activities like basketball and handball were popular among Stage 4 and 5 students. Students expressed satisfaction with most campus areas and have provided some valuable feedback and suggestions on how some physical environments can be improved. The School has started to work with the SRC to review playground facilities.

In terms of unwanted behaviours, out of those reported, most had only one mention. Very few students were mentioned two or more times. Many reports were linked to behaviours the school was aware of and was currently or had already addressed. Those identified as engaging in unwanted behaviour or receiving unwanted behaviour are being provided support by our Pastoral Care team.

Positive behaviour reports were high, with 551 submissions, recognising traits like kindness, authenticity, inclusivity and respect. Students with multiple mentions were recognised in Student Led Assemblies, receiving a ‘Step Beyond’ Award.

The next survey will be conducted in 2025 to ensure ongoing improvements in school culture.

House Spirit Screen

This week, the House Spirit Screen was launched outside Redlands Hall. It’s an exciting new feature that keeps students up to date with real-time House Point scores and recognises top achievers in Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country and Gala Arts from various Year Groups. The screen also highlights our “Step Beyond” recipients, showcasing students who have shown outstanding effort and leadership within their Houses. We hope this display fosters a sense of school spirit and encourages even more participation in House activities.

Learning Plus Volunteers

Learning Plus (support) are looking for volunteers with weekday availability and a desire to contribute regularly to the Redlands student community working with Yrs 7-12.

We need calm and confident community members who understand confidentialityWe need writers (scribes) and readers. You need to have legible handwriting and the ability to communicate in English.

Our volunteers find this a rewarding activity and a fantastic way to support students at Redlands.

We need volunteers to start training now!

Cocurricular Clubs

Finding Support And Friendship At The Big Sister Club

The Big Sister Club is a supportive and inclusive environment designed for younger students to connect with their older peers. In this club, students have the opportunity to discuss school-related challenges, such as managing assessments and handling the demands of a busy school life. Through open conversations, our older students share valuable strategies on how to manage stress and maintain a balanced approach to their studies.

Below is a reflection by Lina Lewis of Year 7, which highlights the pivotal role the Big Sister Club plays in our students’ lives.

We encourage you to talk to your child about this wonderful opportunity, and we’d love to see them bring their friends along to experience the camaraderie and guidance the Big Sister Club has to offer.

“Big Sister Club is a great way to connect and chat with older students. During Big Sister Club we talk about the struggles of school assignments and the busyness of school life. We always learn a lot from the older students including strategies on how to cope with stress. The club is a great way to ask other students questions, have conversations and make new friends with people in years above you. The Big Sister Club is a nice and inclusive environment where you can feel comfortable with asking questions about anything. Sometimes, there are even snacks to eat! Feel free to come along and bring some friends with you.”

The Big Sister Club meets every Monday at lunchtime in LH 3.6.

Bougainvillea Talent Showcase

We are thrilled to announce the Bougainvillea Redlands Talent Showcase, a wonderful event that offers students a unique opportunity to share their talents and connect with the community! The showcase will be held at the Bougainvillea old people’s home on 19 September, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. Not only is this a chance for your child to perform and brighten the day of some truly lovely people, but it also provides a meaningful way to earn extra Service or CAS hours.

Whether your child prefers to perform solo or as part of a group, all types of acts are welcome! It’s a fantastic way for students to develop their confidence, showcase their skills, and experience the joy of giving back. It will be a fun and rewarding afternoon. Students can sign up here.

Encourage your child to take part in this heart-warming event. Entry submissions are due by 16 September at 3:30 pm.

The featured image is a photo sent through from Bougainvillea residents as a Thank You to all students who organised and performed at the last End of Term 2 Talent Show and to the many Redlands students who visit Bougainvillea each Thursday. The number of students interested in the club and the number of residents joining our visits has doubled this year, and we are very appreciative of this special connection within the community.

Don’t miss this chance to be part of something truly special!

ISA Invitational Athletics Carnival Results

Over the past two weeks, our Yr 12 students have demonstrated outstanding commitment and determination while competing in the ISA Invitational Athletics Carnival held at ES Marks and Sydney Olympic Park. Well done to the students below.

Banish BRAD Recycling Excursion

A few weeks ago, our Yr 11 and 12 students attended the Banish BRAD Recycling Hub to sort and recycle items collected for recycling during Greenlands Week. They learned about the benefits of recycling ‘hard to recycle’ items and got the chance to meet Lottie Dalziel, Young Australian of the Year 2022, who founded the recycling program.

The Sustainability Working Group is responsible for managing this excursion. Thank you to Kimberlee Chipper and Redlands Sustainability Working Group for providing this opportunity for these Yr 12 students: Tara Gold, Conor Petersen, Bianca Goggin and Emilie Le Roux.

For more information about Banish BRAD Recycling, see their website here.

Inter-House Debating

Thank you to all Yr 12 students who have helped over the years with coaching and adjudicating the Inter-House Debates. The following Yr 12 students have continued to support this student experience even through their last few weeks of school: Ethan Beggs, Annie Zhang, Hamish Campbell, Scarlett Thorp, Jack Keogh, Krishan Price, Anneka Steele and Ahnu Guan.

A special shout-out to Krishan Price who jumped in last minute to assist with adjudicating Dumolo vs Cowper. Teachers commented that his post-debate analysis was so highly insightful, offering constructive feedback that helped both teams reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement. His ability to break down complex arguments and highlight key moments of the debate was impressive, and his approach fostered a positive and encouraging atmosphere for the young debaters.

Snowsports Interschool Championships

Congratulations to all students who competed in Race Week and those who attended the Snowsports Interschool Championships in Perisher last week. Students were balancing their last few weeks of schoolwork with their love for skiing and snowboarding and enjoying their final run with their peers on the snow.

Yr 12 Snowsports Students: Winter Penney, Felicity Schlederer, Julius Keller, Alfie Leach, Daniel Lev, Thomas Reeves and Zara Naismith

Yr 12 Medals

  • Julius Keller & Alfie Leach – 2nd place in Moguls
  • Felicity Schlederer –  3rd place in Snowboard GS
  • Winter Penney & Felicity Schlederer – 3rd place in Alpine GS

Both Snowsports Captains, Winter Penney and Felicity Schlederer have important yet very different experiences with the snow. They are dedicated captains and have truly embraced this last chance to ski and snowboard with their peers. See a few highlights of each of their journeys with Snowsports.

Snowsports Captain Highlight (Skiing): Winter Penney

Proudest achievement in Snowsports: I am just so proud of all Yr 12 skiers and snowboarders who participated in the events over the last few weeks. It was a really positive energy and it is a wonderful community. It is such a huge achievement to make it to a State Competition, let alone a National Competition. Only the top 15 get through from each round and then the top 6 teams (4 students in each team) move on from there. It is such a huge achievement. My favourite memory was going to cheer on the younger Division 6 competitors with Sam Ford. I remember Grace Bracks did this for me when I was younger and it meant the world to me. So, I wanted to pass on that excitement and enthusiasm for Snowsports to younger skiers. Other schools seem really competitive and intense. Redlands is community orientated around Snowsports and we want everyone to be involved.

Goals for Snowsports in the future: I want to continue skiing for the rest of my life. It is a massive part of my life and who I am.

What you have learned about yourself through Snowsports: As with anything, I have moments that make me want to improve and do my best.

How you managed the IB with your Snowsports commitments: When balancing school and Snowsports, I would get really stressed when I was away from school and skiing. I wouldn’t change it because I love it so much. However, I would work on my studies as much as possible down at the snow, planning partial days of study and then skiing for the rest of the day. It was helpful having a bit of time pressure to keep me organised.

Snowsports Captain Highlight (Snowboarding): Felicity Schlederer

Proudest achievement in Snowsports: Winter School was brilliant but I really got involved in Snowsports this year and I was really proud of myself for being at the same level as other females who have been in the program for a lot longer. I started to become more competitive throughout the year and I wanted to do my best as I think that competitiveness paid off.

Goals for Snowsports in the future: I am looking to follow the snow and spend a whole year in the winter (northern and southern hemisphere). My ultimate goal would be to get into the X Games for Big Air and Park.

What you have learned about yourself through Snowsports: I realised that when I choose to commit to something, I can do really well and I want to do really well. I’ve realised that I can and will continue to work on something in the snow until I feel that I have a sense of accomplishment. This isn’t always the case in other areas but the snow brings this out in me.

How you managed the HSC with your Snowsports commitments: Last year, I did a lot of alternating with trying to fully commit to academics or the snow. I like to make the most of the snow and tried to balance my time appropriately when I was away from school and down in the Snowy Mountains. This year, I had pushed myself in the lead-up to the trials. So, I then used the time after trials as an academic break and allowed myself to be fully immersed in the snow. However, on practice days I would dedicate half of the day to study and then on race days I fully committed to skiing and snowboarding. It all depended on what the demands were that day.

Year 11

Year 11 Examinations

As the examination block draws to a close, we commend Year 11 for their outstanding efforts over the past two weeks. Their resilience, adaptability, motivation and determination have been remarkable, reflecting the high value they place on hard work and success.

As examination results become available, it’s essential to take time for reflection, using this opportunity to reset and evaluate progress for the path ahead.

Key questions:

  • Which examination sections or subjects did you perform strongly in, and what study techniques contributed to this success?
  • Were there particular types of questions (e.g., multiple choice, short answer, essays) that you found easier or more difficult? What can you learn from this?
  • In which areas did you struggle the most, and what specific topics or skills need further development?
  • Looking at your responses, were there any gaps in your knowledge or misunderstandings that affected your results? How will you address these?
  • How did you manage your time during each examination? Were there any sections where time was an issue, and how can you improve your time management?
  • What feedback did you receive on your examination technique (eg. structure, clarity, depth of responses)? How can you refine these skills for Year 12?
  • Were there any patterns across your examinations in terms of mistakes or missed marks? What adjustments can you make to avoid these in the future?
  • Which topics or units are your strongest, and how will you build on this knowledge to ensure continued success in Year 12?
  • Which specific study habits or resources (eg. notes, revision guides, practice examinations) proved effective, and which ones need improvement?
  • How can you set measurable goals to target your weaker areas and track your progress throughout Year 12?

We wish Yr 11 a restful weekend – you should be proud of all your hard work.

Service Learning Excursion

A reminder that to further our Yr 10 students’ Service Learning through experience, Yr 10 students will participate in a half-day excursion on Monday 16 September from 12pm-3pm, with two groups attending two different Service initiatives.

One group of Yr 10 students will take part in the Cook4Good program, run by Kids Giving Back, in Paddington. These students will have the opportunity to hear from the program’s founder and cook meals for those experiencing homelessness. This excursion offers students a firsthand experience of community service and the chance to give back through volunteering.

At the same time, the second group of Year 10 students will attend the Rough Edges initiative’s Urban Insight program. This educational experience takes students on a guided walking tour of the Darlinghurst/Kings Cross area, offering them a unique perspective on life on and around the streets of Sydney. Led by individuals with firsthand experience of homelessness, this program allows students to explore the realities of urban poverty.

This valuable service-learning experience links to the following outcomes in the Redlands Student Wellbeing Framework:

Social Awareness:

  • 3.2 Demonstrating empathy and compassion: Demonstrating respect for people from different social and cultural groups. Contextualising my experience of the world with real-world experiences of others.
  • 3.3 Contributing to civil society: Participating actively in opportunities to enact change and impact society.

Year 9

Commerce Masterclass

As Year 9 prepares to pitch their ideas to their partner organisations in Commerce in the coming weeks, we’ve supported their readiness through a pairing of masterclasses. One on how to structure a pitch and the other on visual design with Canva.

Michelle Bowden is an authority on the art of persuasion in business. Having coached her persuasive presentation skills Masterclass over 1000 times she’s helped countless teams achieve pitching success. In just two short hours Michelle ran through structuring the pitch, icebreakers and some important lessons on dialling up your personal presence.

Michelle has prepared some additional resources for our students to dip into over the coming weeks. These are worthwhile skills to continue to develop over their academic and professional careers. She has also gifted the Roseby Library copies of her books.

Megan Townes is the Canva for Education Regional Lead for Asia-Pacific-Japan who guides educational institutions to adopt and utilise Canva to empower their staff and students to create. As an Australian ‘unicorn’ Canva is well known and beloved by our students. It was a real treat to get access to first-hand information about brand identity and the interplay between new product development in a way that remains true to your mission and strategic pillars.  Students also had time to work in their teams on playing with some of the new tools in Canva that they may wish to utilise in their Commerce task.

Tournament of the Minds

Congratulations to Charlotte Boris, Georgia Cavric, Amelie Dewar, Melissa Franco, Roman Jackson, Sophia Liu and Abby Stante for their excellent effort in Tournament of Minds (TOM), which was held at UNSW on Sunday 8 September. Year 8

Week 8 – RU OK?

Today is Australia’s ‘RU OK?’ day, and it is a great time to stop and check-in with the people around you, and ask them, ‘are you okay?’ R U OK? Day is an annual event in Australia, held on the second Thursday of September, dedicated to promoting mental health and wellbeing. The day encourages everyone to check in with friends, family, and colleagues by asking the simple yet powerful question: ‘Are you OK?’ It’s a reminder that a conversation can make a big difference in someone’s life, helping to support those who may be struggling with their mental health.

In the spirit of supporting others around us, yesterday, we engaged students in considering how they can support their friends, peers and others in our community by checking in with them and asking them if they are okay. We considered how a person might look if they are not feeling okay and explored how we can offer someone our support or direct them to an appropriate source of support within the school.

Hopefully, everyone was able to get out today and check in with their friends and peers to ask them ‘RU OK?’

Mathematics Challenge

On Tuesday, eight of our Yr 8 students journeyed to Sydney Grammar to participate in a Mathematics Challenge day. Tournament of the Minds

Congratulations to Ina Guan, Lachlan Carter and Liv Law for their inspiring performance in Tournament of Minds (TOM) at UNSW on Sunday 8 September. A total of 67 schools competed at this event.

Our Yr 8s led a team that also included Yr 7 students, Aashray So, Alisha Rajalingam, Sophie Wong and Yolanda Bai for 6 weeks to develop a dramatic performance bringing to life the story of a living local person in their community. The judges were very impressed by the team’s ability to demonstrate their sense of connection to the refugee experiences of Lachlan’s grandfather using three art forms – instrumental music, classical dance and painted murals.

Well done to our Year 8s on their well-deserved award, and thank you to the following staff for facilitating this experience and organising their training sessions: Ms Bailey, Ms Cleghorn, Mr Holden, Ms Joo, Ms Kang and Dr Poon.

Fun Fridays

As part of our time in Tutor, we try to give students many opportunities to connect with their peers. When we get the chance, we hold Fun Fridays to allow space for peers to relax, have fun and bond with their fellow tutees. Quite often these activities are student led, allowing students to have curated fun, whilst also developing leadership skills as they manage the session for their peers. Last Friday, several activities were occurring ranging from Mafia to handball and table tennis to the creation of electronic circuits to produce musical sounds.

Subject Spotlight – Science

Recently, Ms Wang visited Yr 8 Science and managed to capture them during one of their engaging experiments. Ms Nash took students through a complicated and very exciting process to help them investigate the energy content in different foods. They needed to weigh a food sample, set it on fire (they loved this part! ????) and use the heat energy produced to heat up a small container of water. Students then needed to calculate the temperature increase of the water and use that value to perform a series of calculations to determine the energy content of their food sample in kilojoules per gram.

According to Ms Nash, the experiment had multiple levels and was tricky to navigate but the students worked collaboratively and with great interest, and smashed it!

Counsellor Talk P-6

Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem: Key Insights from Our Junior School Counsellors

This morning, we hosted a topic talk for our K-6 parents in the Arnold Library, this was led by our Junior School counsellors. The session focused on practical strategies to nurture children’s self-esteem. Below is a summary of the key points shared:

  • Proactive Self-Esteem Building: Encourage positive self-talk and provide opportunities for children to take on new challenges both at school and at home.
  • Embrace Setbacks as Growth Opportunities: Support your child through challenges by framing mistakes as part of the learning process. For instance, “Its ok to make a mistake, you’re still learning. Making a mistake is part of the process of learning .” We encourage our students to ‘have a go” and try new things. Any setbacks your child may have, should be seen as opportunities for development and a way to enhance resilience.
  • Healthy Body Image: Promote a balanced view of body image by celebrating diverse body types and focusing on abilities rather than appearance.
  • Impact of Technology: Be mindful of the influence of digital media on self-esteem and set clear boundaries for online interactions
  • Encouragement and Praise: Recognise and praise your child’s efforts. For example, you might say “You’re really working hard on that project,” or “I’m proud of you for practicing your spelling/writing/piano/guitar/tennis you’ve really stuck with it.”
  • Highlight Positives: At the end of each day, ask your child to share three good things that happened. This practice helps them focus on the positive aspects of their day.
  • Consistent approach: At home encourage daily perseverance as children will respond to parents’ positive reinforcement and will appreciate you showing interest in their activities.
  • Daily Wellbeing Check-Ins: Encourage your child to express their feelings and use the ‘Zones of Regulation’ to help them understand their emotions and let them know that “their voice matters”.

By integrating these strategies into our daily routines, we can collectively foster a supportive environment that enhances our children’s confidence and self-esteem. Thank you for working in partnership with us at school as we continue to develop and strengthen our students’ wellbeing.

R U OK Day

At the JS Assembly this week, our Year 6 Wellbeing leaders spoke about R U OK Day. At Redlands we check in everyday with our peers and teachers and ask each other “how are you feeling today?

Our Year 6 leaders reminded our JS students about the importance of reaching out to a trusted adult when you need help at school and that all student voices matter. At Redlands our teachers, specialists, counsellors and school leaders are trusted adults who are here to always keep our students safe.

Spring Vacation Care

We are excited to announce that the Spring School Holidays Program is now available for booking via the HubHello system. We encourage you to secure your spots early to ensure your children can join the fun and engaging activities we have planned.

Please note that our staff will be in an all-day training on 27 September 27, so OOSH will not be available on this day. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.

If you encounter any issues with the booking process, please contact us immediately at ooshbookings@redlands.nsw.edu.au for assistance.

School Start Time

School starts at 8am and all children are welcome to socialise and play in our supervised outdoor spaces from 8am every morning. We also appreciate that some of our students are travelling on buses or have special circumstances which mean they arrive a little bit earlier. To support our families and keep those students supervised safely, we have opened the Arnold Library from 7:30am for those students. A firm reminder that students are not to go to any other parts of the Junior Campus before 8am.

Learning Plus Volunteers

Learning Plus (support) are looking for volunteers with weekday availability and a desire to contribute regularly to the Redlands student community working with Y7-12.

We need calm and confident community members who understand confidentialityWe need writers (scribes) and readers. You need to have legible handwriting and the ability to communicate in English.

Our volunteers find this a rewarding activity and a fantastic way to support students at Redlands.

We need volunteers to start training now!

Week 8 Wellbeing Spotlight

A Message from Mrs Clinton

This morning, our counsellors hosted a topic talk for our K-6 parents in the Arnold Library focusing on practical strategies to nurture children’s self-esteem. Below is a summary of the key points shared:

  • Proactive self-Esteem building: Encourage positive self-talk and provide opportunities for children to take on new challenges both at school and at home
  • Embrace setbacks as growth opportunities: Support your child through challenges by framing mistakes as part of the learning process. For instance, “Its ok to make a mistake, you’re still learning. Mistakes are our friends so keep trying!” We encourage our students to ‘have a go” and try new things.
  • Consistent approach: Our Prep children will continue to put in the effort, and they will respond to parents’ positive reinforcement. Encourage perseverance after school by asking your child to tell you three good things that happened in their day. This encourages your child to notice the positive things that are happening every day, boosting their self-esteem.
  • Daily Wellbeing Check-Ins: Encourage your child to express their feelings and use the ‘Zones of Regulation’ to help them understand their emotions and let them know that “their voice matters”.

Kindergarten Clifton Gardens Excursion

Our recent Kindergarten excursion to Clifton Gardens was a resounding success, as students engaged in a fun and interactive day of hands-on learning about forces. Ranger Jamie captivated the students with exciting demonstrations, including liquid nitrogen experiments and flying objects, sparking their curiosity about the physical world. Dressed in scientific safety gear, students eagerly participated in activities that explored contact and non-contact forces, learning how push and pull can change the speed and direction of objects.

Through making gooey mystery matter and launching air rockets, the students were able to plan and conduct their own investigations, applying their new understanding of energy and air pressure. By the end of the day, they were full of excitement, proudly demonstrating their newfound knowledge of how forces work and how energy is used. It was a day full of discovery, fun, and learning that left students eager to explore more!

Camp Week

September 16-20 (Week 9)

The excitement is building for Prep Camp Week. The timetable below outlines the adventures and learning opportunities that are planned for our students. The activities throughout the week all have a single purpose of developing teamwork skills and resilience in our young learners. When we safely encourage our students to try things outside their comfort zone and then shine a light on successes and/or failures, a young person’s resilience grows and develops. Camp days, dancing, working in teams and learning how to share and support each other will all provide golden opportunities for resilience to thrive.

On Wednesday 18 September, we will be holding our Camp Week Olympic Games Day on the oval. The students will be randomly allocated a country to represent and are encouraged to dress up or wear a splash of colour of that country for the day. This can be as simple as a ribbon, head band, scrunchie etc. For example, if a student is allocated Brazil they may choose to wear green shorts and a yellow shirt.

Parents are also welcome to come and watch the students participate in the Camp Week Olympic Games Day between 8:30 am and 10:30 am. We hope to see many of you there cheering on the students!

K-2 Innovation Week – Sustainability Challenge (Term 4, Week 3)

We are excited to announce that during Week 3 of Term 4, K-2 students will be participating in Innovation Week with a focus on sustainability. Students will have the opportunity to tackle one of three sustainability challenges: designing no-waste lunchboxes, repurposing everyday waste into something useful or beautiful, or creating devices that save water. Additionally, students can work on creating sustainable bird feeders to encourage bird life at school.

We kindly ask families to support this initiative by sending in reusable materials such as plastic bottles, containers, cardboard boxes, bottle tops, string, wool, or fabric scraps. Collection tubs will be placed at Prep Reception and car line from next week to gather these materials. Your contributions will help fuel the students’ creativity. The possibilities for innovation are endless!

Thank you for your support in helping our students become sustainability champions!

Secondary Sport

As we move into the summer season the next few weeks there will be a number of team selections which can prove to be a pivotal moment for many students who are passionate about sports or other group activities. While all students registering for a Sport will be placed in a team, the anticipation of seeing your name on the list of the particular team for that Sport that you were hoping to get into can bring excitement, but when it’s not there, it can lead to a whirlwind of emotion – disappointment, frustration and even self-doubt. For both students and parents, managing these feelings is crucial not only for emotional wellbeing but also for personal growth. Here’s how to navigate this challenging experience and turn it into an opportunity for development.

  • Understanding the Feeling – It’s natural to feel upset when you don’t make the team you were hoping to get into. You might feel like your hard work hasn’t paid off, or you might compare yourself to those who were selected. Recognising and acknowledging these feelings is the first step in managing them. For parents, seeing your child disappointed can be tough. It’s important to validate their feelings without immediately trying to “fix” the situation. Sometimes, just being there to listen is what your child needs most.
  • Reframe the Experience – Missing out on selection for that particular team doesn’t define your abilities or worth. Instead of viewing it as a failure, consider it as an opportunity to reflect and grow. Ask yourself: what did I learn from this experience? are there areas I can improve? how can I use this as motivation? By encouraging your child to reframe the experience can help them see the bigger picture and understand that setbacks are a normal part of life.
  • Set New Goals – After processing the disappointment, it’s time to set new goals. Whether it’s improving specific skills, trying out for a different team, or focusing on another area of interest, having a new target can help redirect energy and maintain motivation. For parents, supporting your child in setting realistic and achievable goals is crucial. Discuss what steps they can take to improve and how you can support them in their journey.
  • Stay Positive and Keep Trying – have we have mentioned before resilience is key. Remind yourself and your child that many successful people have faced rejection and disappointment. What sets them apart is their determination to keep trying. Encourage your child to stay positive, keep practising, and try again when the next opportunity arises. As a parent, being a role model in resilience and positivity can have a lasting impact. Show them that setbacks are temporary and that perseverance leads to success.
  • Reach Out for Support – If the disappointment feels overwhelming, don’t hesitate to reach out for support. Whether it’s talking to a coach or a teacher, getting a different perspective can be incredibly helpful. Understanding that you’re not alone in this experience can bring comfort and clarity.

Missing out on team selections is tough, but it’s also an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. By acknowledging the feelings, reframing the experience, setting new goals and staying positive, students can turn this challenge into a stepping stone toward future success. Parents play a crucial role in guiding their children through this process, helping them build resilience and confidence for whatever comes next.

“Bad things do happen; how you respond to them defines your character and the quality of your life. You can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of your loss or you can choose to rise from the pain…” – Walter Anderson

Sailing

It was great to have so many Redland parents pop down to RSYS to enjoy a sausage sandwich with students and meet Michael (RSYS Sailing Captain), Ian (Academy Manager) and the RSYS coaching team.

Coach Jameson Prescott (former Redlands student) was back from the US leg of the World Match Racing circuit where his crew were third overall. Jameson is looking forward to working with the Pacer sailors over summer and to improve their skills.

So far this season, we have been fortunate to have some stunning sailing conditions and fingers crossed this will continue. Coaches are trying to improve the speed with which our sailors get on the water and are already seeing a big improvement on last year. To assist can you please make sure your child is ready to go at the RSYS gate at 8.00am on Saturdays.

Snowsports

We had an excellent week at Snowsports Nationals, totalling 30 participants from K-12 across 8 different disciplines. The weather and snow conditions presented challenges for some events including cross country and moguls. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped rain, hail, or shine support events. A mention and thanks to Interschools for their dedication in making sure the Nationals proceeded despite the minimal snow.

A special shout-out to the following students:

  • Aibe Elsworth – 2nd Place Skier X
  • Felicity Schlederer, Georgina Williams & Eva Fitzhenry – 3rd place in Snowboard GS
  • Aibe Elsworth, Winter Penney, Felicity Schlederer & Nora Moncau-Munio – 3rd place in Alpine GS

2024 IB Theatre Solo Performances

Stunning Sophisticated Solos were Sensational!

What a phenomenal week we had in IB Higher Level Theatre last week. Over two nights and two nights of technical rehearsal, the Year 12 IB cohort presented 11 Solo Performances based on the theoretical practice of Anne Bogart including exploring techniques and conventions such as: gestures, topography, shape, architecture, tempo and repetition.

Each performance was nuanced, emotional and sophisticated. Each student should be congratulated for the high standard they were able to achieve. As an IB teacher of some years I was exceptionally proud of the way the cohort was able to manipulate the theory in practice and it really stands them in good stead for the next step, to write their reports on the performance. Those that were there to bear witness spoke highly of the sophistication and maturation of the work.

Congratulations to all, it was a beautiful representation and culmination of your two year course and you should be suitably proud of all of your hard work and efforts.

Music

Cat Empire, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Redlands Choir Performance

It’s not every day that you perform with even just one musical icon such as the Cat Empire, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra or Sydney Children’s Choir. And last Friday, 20 of our Year 9 and 10 Choir students were able to perform with all three of these Australian musical treasures at the Sydney Opera House.

For this live-streamed concert, audiences were up on their feet, dancing along as these combined forces raised the roof.

This quote from Sydney Arts Guide’s review says it best:

“A crowning glory of this collaboration was the addition of the Sydney Children’s Choir [and associated school choirs, including Redlands]. Perched above the busy stage action, often dancing up a storm and always performing with a penetrating purity, their presence in band merch T-shirts added yet another layer of successful crossover to this knockout Sydney Opera House debut for the popular Melbourne band.”

A special thanks goes to Ms Nicole Roberts, Ms Kirsty Hales and Mr Mathew Owen for facilitating such an exciting and unforgettable opportunity for these choir students.

ASBOF – String Ensembles

Come support our Senior strings students! Our Intermediate and Advanced String Ensembles will be performing at the Australian Band and Orchestra Festival (ASBOF) this Sunday at Leighton Hall in the John Niland Scientia Building, UNSW Kensington.

Parents and carers of strings students should note this is the day of the Sydney Marathon, and significant road closures will affect travel. Please refer to information sent by Ms Kirsty Hales for more details.
