Issue 28 2022 Term 3 Week 9 - 15 Sep 2022

From The Principal

The passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth the Second, has been a significant moment in history and as announced by the Prime Minister, Thursday 22 September will be a National Day of Mourning and a Public Holiday. The last day of Term 3 for students will now be Wednesday 21 September.

The Rector of St Peter’s Anglican Church, Cremorne, and Board Director, The Rev’d Tim St Quintin has extended an invitation to all members of the Redlands community to attend a memorial service for The Queen, at St Peter’s on Sunday 25 September at 10am. The guest preacher will be Bishop Peter Watson, former Archbishop of Melbourne.

Congratulations to these students on this wonderful recognition.

Our musicians achieved outstanding results at the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival (ASBOF) held at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music last Sunday. Congratulations to the Advanced Concert Band who were awarded Gold and the Combined Intermediate and Advanced Strings who were awarded Silver in their respective sections. This is a fantastic achievement and my sincere thanks to all of our exceptional Music staff and especially the Yr 12 students who have set such a wonderful example with their commitment and dedication.

I congratulate our Snowsports team on their excellent achievements at the Australian National Interschools Championships, held at Perisher at the end of last week. The team placed 2nd in Secondary Overall Coed, with 9 team and 6 individual Top 10 places. A special mention to the following teams and individuals who achieved 6 podium places:

Gold

Div 1 Girls Snowboard GS team, becoming National Champions

Silver

Div 1 Girls Snowboard Cross team
Div 1 Boys Slopestyle Ski – Billy Thomas (Yr 12)

Bronze

Div 1 Girls Alpine team
Div 1 Girls Snowboard GS – Sienna Wessels (Yr 11)
Div 3 Girls Moguls team

This week we have had a range of opportunities to give thanks for the service given by our Year 12 leaders. Their theme of ‘Mission Possible’ was celebrated in the student led assembly, which highlighted the strength of student involvement in activities across the full life of the School. One of their final leadership tasks has been the organisation of the House Spirit Fair, which enables students to undertake a range of fun events while supporting their nominated fundraising activities. Due to weather this event has been moved to Friday afternoon. A highlight will no doubt be the lip-sync battle, with the word that a staff team is set to make another slick appearance.

Parent Survey

We recognise the vital role our wider community plays in the prosperity of Redlands and remain committed to providing opportunities for feedback on our performance. With this in mind, early next week we will be inviting all parents to complete a short survey about the School. This anonymous survey will remain open until Tuesday 4 October for parents to provide their feedback. I thank you in advance for your contribution.

Redlands Autumn Fair – 18 March 2023

We are pleased to announce that our recently postponed Spring Fair has been rescheduled to 18 March 2023 as the first Redlands Autumn Fair. Further details will be announced as this year unfolds.

Community Update

As a School we continue to pursue a journey that positions Redlands as a leading contemporary and innovative school inspiring students to adapt, create and thrive in our complex global community.

At the heart of this journey is our community. We recognise the vital role our wider community plays in the prosperity of Redlands and remain committed to providing opportunities for feedback on our performance. With this in mind, we will shortly be inviting you to complete a short survey of your feedback.  The survey should only take a few minutes, is anonymous, does not collect any personally identifiable information. Thank you for your consideration and contribution within this important process.

We are delighted to announce that our recently postponed Spring Fair has been rescheduled to 18 March 2023 as the first Redlands Autumn Fair. Thank you again to our dedicated and passionate volunteers and staff for your efforts in the preparation of the Spring Fair. Further details of the Autumn Fair will be announced as this year unfolds.

Our Second Hand Uniform Sale continues this week and clean, pre-loved uniforms can still be donated through the Uniform Shop up to and including Friday, 16 September. A sale of these uniforms will be held on the Junior Campus this Saturday 17 September. This Redlands Parent and Friends Association led initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community while raising valuable funds for our means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund. My thanks to the army of volunteers and our Uniform Shop for their assistance in delivering this important event.  For more information on this initiative and upcoming community events and photos, please visit the RPFA section of Note Day.

Our alumni of Redlanders can be found locally and globally and it was a pleasure to welcome London resident, Pauline Lyle-Smith (Redlander 1963) back to the School this week. For more information on Pauline’s visit, along with information on the Melbourne Cup Luncheon and our Redlanders Mentor Program with our Year 11 cohort, please visit our Foundation section.

Notable Alumni Visiting Redlands

It was a privilege and an absolute pleasure to welcome Pauline Lyle-Smith (RL 1963) back to Redlands while she is in town from London presenting a research paper at a conference in ANU Canberra. She was thrilled to take a tour of the Senior Campus and was highly impressed with the advancement of teaching and learning facilities since she left. We enjoyed hearing her memories of the Liggins Building where she studied Latin and French, winning the French Prize in 1963. She was very excited to learn that Latin is still taught in the Liggins Building today and admired the work of our young Latin students.

Pauline graduated with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of Sydney in 1968 and, after qualifying as a solicitor in NSW, practised law at Freehill, Hollingdale & Page (now Herbert, Smith Freehills). Whilst practising law she carried out evening pro bono legal work at the Wayside Chapel in King’s Cross, Sydney. She was the first female Australian qualified to practise law in NSW, (Australia), England & Wales and the USA (NY State).

Pauline has served on numerous Boards and Committees in the UK. She was Mayoress of Hammersmith and Fulham 2011/2012 and 2013/2014 and is Deputy Chairman of the Britain-Australia Society Education Trust which currently concentrates on scholarships and bursaries. She has been closely involved in assisting the local community and businesses in Hammersmith and Fulham for over 20 years.

Friends of Hockey would like to thank the amazingly generous Hockey community and Redlands sports staff for its support of this year’s hugely successful season – especially all who donated raffle prizes and bought tickets, those who volunteered their time to organise, set up and bake, and our players who made the celebration night special: our wonderful trivia compere and our brilliant Year 12s MCs who doubled as raffle ticket sellers.

Head of Secondary School

As we travel through the penultimate week of Term 3, the Secondary Students continue to amaze us with their talents and skills. Our Yr 12 students have commenced their final week of school! Yr 11 students are receiving back their recent examinations and analysing feedback in order to set future goals and make decisions about Yr 12 study. They are also readying themselves for Leadership announcements and Camp in the first week of Term 4. Yr 10 and Yr 9 have also been submitting their final assessments before the examination blocks and Camps in Term 4. Yr 7 and 8 are flying through the end of this term, submitting final assessment tasks and receiving feedback for learning experiences submitted earlier in the term. This week, I had some fun with Yr 8 who spent some time in their English lesson self-assessing their multimodal task using a marking criteria, before the results were released on iLearn. Next term our Stage 4 students will be sitting a slightly modified examination schedule with the aim of supporting them to develop study and revision skills leading up to, and during, an examination period. We know this can often be a daunting prospect for Yr 7 and 8, and our Dean of Students, Ms Anna Rolon, has been working collaboratively with Yr Advisors, Ms Sarah Matthews and Ms Lucienne Willis, in order to schedule a block of exams with build-in study periods and learning time.

There seem to be a lot of amateur student filmographers on campus at the moment. Our Yr 12 students have been compiling memories to share in their final days of school, and our Yr 10 students have had fun making a short positive film for their cohort.

Ms Ynson and Ms Boase challenged Yr 10 to step up and express what they believed the Yr 10 cohort need to hear and experience at this time in the term.  A few students chose to create a video to provide inspiration and focus for Yr 10 as they prepare to enter the senior years of school. We’d love to share it with you here.

Yr 11 Camp Medical Information

As highlighted in the recent Yr 11 Camp Letter, the Yr 11 Camp is coming up from 10-14 October at High Country Campus, Jindabyne. It is essential that you complete the OEG Medical Form at your earliest convenience. Please click the link below to access the OEG medical forms. You may need to create an account. OEG are using a new tool for collecting medical information which we hope will streamline the process. Any parent or carer can create the account to provide information, and only one entry for each student needs to be made.

There is the facility to upload any anaphylaxis, asthma or other medical plans, submit dietary requirements and request a follow up if required. Please declare and provide information on any prescription medications your child will require during the camp.

Parties are the New Sleepovers

Our young adults are partying. It’s a fact. While it is an important part of adulthood for adolescence to develop independence, prioritise friendships and to learn how to analyse positive and negative risk-taking behaviour, our young adults need our time and attention to make healthy and safe decisions.

While we may understand the need for “the talk” about sex and healthy sexual relationships, “the talk” about partying, alcohol and drugs is equally as important. On Redlands SchoolTV, parents are encouraged to start the conversation and keep the conversation going with their children about partying. It is recommended for all parents to:

  • Get the facts
  • Be clear in your own beliefs
  • Look for opportunities to start the conversation
  • Ask questions
  • Make sure your teenagers understand the harms
  • Set rules and consequences

The following link includes a brochure for further details on what information to include in “the talk”.

This second link includes a brochure with information around how to host a responsible party for teenagers under 18 and how parents can keep their children and their friends stay safe when partying.

This third link includes recommended advice from Mr Paul Dillon on how to best introduce your teenagers to alcohol. First and foremost, delay your child’s first drink of alcohol for as long as possible, be honest about your own alcohol use and be a good role model, create rules and boundaries around alcohol, create meaningful consequences and make sure your child knows that rules are negotiable as they get older.

Inter-House Debating Final Competition 16 September

Over these last three weeks, students from all four houses, many students with no prior experience in debating, have put their hands up to join their house debating teams for an impressive Inter-House Debating competition. Thank you to Mrs Rachel Beggs for organising this event, Yr 11 students for coaching and Yr 12 students for adjudicating.

The final debate will take place this Friday during Tutor.  The entire Yr 10 cohort will be viewing the debate. The topic is: That the public performance of Drill Rap should be prohibited in Australia, including on social media. Cowper is AFFIRMATIVE and McDouall is NEGATIVE. Good Luck Yr 10 – we are looking forward to it!

Cowper Team: Charli Waterland, Jocelyn Wang, Bianca Goggins, Emilie Leroux and Will Howard

McDouall Team: Marcus Cooper-Hor, Chris Szeto, Damian Roesink, Winter Penney and Sholto Mirrlees-Black.

Assertive Behaviour Workshop by Mr. Brent Sanders 18 October

Yr 10 will participate in an Assertive Behaviours Workshop run by ex-policeman and spokesperson of Winning Edge Strategies, Mr Brent Sanders, on Tuesday 18 October. The workshop is based on the premise of empowering students through knowledge, and is an integral part of the Year 10 PDHPE and Pastoral Care program. Brent Saunders is an experienced and respected presenter who specialises in this area, and his workshops are popular with a large number of Sydney’s leading independent schools.

Specifically, this opportunity develops the capacities of adolescents by supporting them to take responsibility for themselves and their actions, developing awareness that life is based on choices, as well as championing the importance of respect and self-discipline. Students will be briefed and provided with positive self-protection strategies built upon self-motivation, assertiveness and basic conflict psychology.

Redlands has been running this workshop for over eight years and the feedback from students has been extremely positive. We hope that your son/daughter will find it equally as beneficial and take away some practical strategies to support their safety.

Parent Information – What is BeReal and how does it work?

  • BeReal is a social media app that is fast becoming the latest obsession for Gen Z and has started to make an appearance on the Senior Campus.
  • BeReal was invented in 2020, but according to trending news website Social Media Today, downloads of the app have risen by 315% since the beginning of the year, now ranking fourth in the list of most downloaded social media apps, behind Instagram, Snapchat, and Pinterest.
  • BeReal users receive a notification at a random time once a day saying, ‘Time to BeReal’. This opens a two-minute window for the user to post a picture of what they are currently doing. The purpose of this is to capture an authentic, unfiltered snapshot of a user’s life – the opposite of the curated Instagram or SnapChat photos. The app takes a picture using both the front and back camera, so other people can see what the user looks like and where they are.
  • The user can only see other people’s posts after they have posted their own. Followers are notified and can see when somebody has posted ‘late’ or has retaken the photo. Captions can be added with the post and other people can comment on the post.
  • It’s possible to retake the BeReal photo many times during the two-minute countdown, but followers can see how many times the photo has been recaptured.
While there is not a ‘like’ option available on the app, users can react to other posts by using their RealMoji.
  • Because of the time restraint, photos aren’t as polished or aesthetic as there is less pressure to create the perfect scene and gain approval from followers. BeReal is seen as a refreshing way to use social media however, the fear of missing out or the pressure to get the photo within the 2-minute time frame may be stressful for users (and outweigh the positives).

Why should I be concerned about BeReal?

  • BeReal has the possibility to disrupt lessons and distract students as the prompt can appear at any time during the day.
  • Students may cave to peer pressure to install the app in fear of missing out (FOMO).
  • The app has a map feature that allows the user to see where their contacts are throughout the world which may cause an issue for privacy.
  • BeReal causes issues with privacy as the post may capture other students in the frame who have not consented to be included in the post.

One Girl – Educating Girls to Change the World

Girls’ Education Changes Everything – Full Version.

It’s not right that in Sierra Leone, a girl is more likely to be married before the age of 18 than she is to finish high school. It’s not right that only 16% of girls in Sierra Leone finish high school. It’s not right that 132 million girls around the globe don’t have access to a basic high school education.

This needs to change.

However, not all hope is lost. Freya Kittle, Betti Butcher and Amynta Field are Yr 9 students here at Redlands who have become ambassadors for One Girl and have set up fundraising pages for this cause. One Girl is a non-profit organisation which helps find and provide education for girls in Sierra Leone and Uganda. They’re on a mission to help give girls an education in countries where it is less available. They found that when you educate a girl, her income will increase by 10–25% for every year she stays in school. She’ll get married when she chooses to, be able to think for herself, have control over her own income, and break the cycle of poverty. So now, they are asking for your help. If you could consider donating, it would be greatly appreciated and can make life changing opportunities for girls less fortunate than us.

You can find Betti, Freya and Amynta’s  fundraising links below:

Yr 9 Examinations – Term 4, Week 2

Throughout Week 9 & 10, students will begin preparations for their Term 4 Yearly Examinations.

In the coming weeks, students will receive their Examination Timetable which will assist with planning and preparation at home. Resources will also be available through individual classes to assist in this process and students are encouraged to liaise with their teachers on best practice for each subjects.

Redlands My TV – Exam Jitters

Setting a schedule is vitally important. Students need to schedule everything from sleeping and eating, to studying and exercising. It is one of the best ways to manage inevitable exam stress. Students need to look after themselves when they have big demands in their life.

When it comes to productive study, sometimes less is often more. It is recommended that students hit the books in 50-minute stints, broken up by 15-minute breaks. This gives the brain, and body, a rest. Adolescents will often underestimate the amount of sleep they need. Getting enough sleep is key to successful study practices. Research shows that physical activity also has a very positive impact on mental wellbeing. Eating well is another crucial factor to maintaining concentration and staying focussed on the task ahead.

Reach Out – 5 Apps to help you study at home

Exams – It’s a word that’ll get most people’s stomachs sinking and hearts fluttering. Exam anxiety can be really tough to tackle and it can affect anyone – from the most super-conscientious student to the last-minute crammer. While it’s a tough ask to eliminate exam stress completely, there are some study apps that can help make it all a little more manageable. Here are the best study apps to get you on the right track.

Reach Out – Top 5 motivation boosters

  1. Work out your ‘why’: if you know the benefit of getting the task done, you’ll be more motivated to do it.
  2. Put a timer on: set a timer for 20 mins and focus solely on the task at hand. Put your phone away and tell yourself you’ll procrastinate later.
  3. Celebrate the wins: make yourself a ‘Ta-da’ list where you write down your achievements, no matter how small.
  4. Get moving: go for a short walk or do some stretches, it’ll help you get inspired.
  5. Play music: make a playlist of your fave upbeat songs and listen to them when you need an extra push.

Yr 6 to Yr 7 Transition: Connect and Chat

Last Friday, in another important stepping stone towards preparing Yr 6 for Secondary School, we were delighted to welcome a number of students from Yrs 7 and 11 to run small group Q&A sessions with all of our Yr 6 students. Our students found it invaluable to have this peer-to-peer opportunity to talk about the transition and have their important questions answered by our Secondary School students themselves. Equally, we were delighted to welcome many former Junior School students back to the campus and see how much they have grown as people in their time in the Secondary School. We were also pleased to welcome a number of key Secondary School staff and leaders including Mr Tod-Hill, who you may recall I confirmed would be this Year Group’s Year Advisor in 2023.

Calling Yr 6 Students: Government Youth Steering Committee

The Australian Government has just announced an opportunity for students aged between 12-25 years to apply to be part of a Youth Steering Committee to work with the Minister for Youth.

Information and the application process can be found here and Year 6 students will also be provided with this information via Google Classroom. Within the application, students will be asked to answer four open-ended questions with responses to each question no longer than 250 words.

  1. What do you think are the two most important issues for young people in Australia and why do you think these issues are important? You can include any relevant personal experience related to these issues.
  2. Why would you like to join the Youth Steering Committee? You can include any personal experience and what you would like to achieve by joining the Youth Steering Committee.
  3. What personal experiences and skills would you bring to the Youth Steering Committee?
  4. Do you have experience volunteering or participating in advisory groups? If yes, tell us about your experiences.

Yr 9 Service Learning Project: Hope in a Suitcase

Yr 9 are currently working on a Service Learning project with the aim to actively engage with a chosen charity. Hope in a Suitcase has been one charity which these students are passionate about and are hoping to seek the support from the Junior School too.

Hope in a Suitcase Australia is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers who are incredibly passionate about showing every child in the foster care system that they are loved and valued by their community. They aim to do this by giving them a suitcase of their very own to ensure they have a safe and secure place in which to pack their belongings and take with them wherever their journey may lead.

The suitcases are filled with essential items such as toiletries, (sanitary items for the older girls), underwear, a set of pyjamas and a change of clothing. They also include something to cuddle for the younger children, a book to read, a journal or colouring-in books and pencils to encourage creativity and provide a distraction away from their turmoil.

What can you donate?

  • Pyjamas/ singlets/ underwear/ socks
  • Other clothing items
  • Toothbrush/ toothpaste
  • Something to cuddle (e.g., doll /toy)
  • Blanket
  • Hairbrush/ hairbands
  • Story book
  • Toys (craft, cars, animals, dolls)
  • Colouring in or activity books
  • Pencils/ textas

Where can you donate?

Through to the end of this term, a donation box will be set up in the Junior School Reception for you to donate. Thank you so much for considering donating, which will mean a great deal to Year 9 and more importantly, the children we are supporting.

Public Holiday Reminder – Thursday 22 September

As per the notification form Mr Webber, please note that with the Prime Minister designating Thursday 22 September as a Public Holiday and National Day of Mourning to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II, the end of Term 3 for all Redlands students will be next Wednesday 21 September, rather than Thursday 22 September. Term 4 will commence as planned on Monday 10 October.

Yr 4 Gallery Walk

Further to Ms Axam’s letter to Year 4 families last week, the Year 4 students and teachers are looking forward to welcoming parents to their Gallery Walk tomorrow (Friday). As per the guidance in the letter, parents are kindly asked to wait outside at the bottom of the Year 4 stairwell next to the play equipment and the Ballet and Dance office, whilst teachers take the class roll. When ready, students will come down and invite you up to the classroom at 8.30am.

Change of Date: Yr 6 Gallery Walk

As per the notification form Ms Robinson, with Thursday 22 September now being a Public Holiday, the Year 6 Gallery Walk will take place on Monday 19 September between 8,30-9.15am. Parents are asked to wait in Reception our outside until this time to allow for roll call to take place first.

Lost Property

We have a large number of unnamed and unclaimed water bottles and lunch boxes outside the Parkes Building which we have asked students to look at and claim any that belong to them. Many have been there for a while and if unclaimed, we will repurpose or pass on to a charitable cause at the end of term. Parents are very welcome to come in before school to have a look through these as well.

Prep Camp Week

What a week it has been so far! Koori Kinnections started our week with authentic indigenous storytelling, traditional boat making skills and inspiring drama and dance activities for Kindy and Yr 1. Our Yr 2 students have thrived throughout the week with activities that have encouraged team building, negotiation skills and camp related fun! Friendship bracelets, rock painting, scavenger hunts, talent quests, just to name a few of the wonderful opportunities this week for everyone.

The Outdoor Education days have been nothing but a success. I am so proud of all our learners as they challenged themselves to bush walk, investigated sea animals, enjoyed kite making and participated enthusiastically in every activity that came their way.

As we have had so many varied opportunities this week for all our learners, I thought I would share some student reflective writing and the link to our collective shared space for photos from each grades experience.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who have made our inaugural camp week such a huge success.

Kindergarten Camp Week

It has been an exciting and adventure filled week for our Kindergarten students. Camp Week commenced with a story telling experience led by Aboriginal Leaders from Koori Kinnections. The children listened to the story of the Greedy Pelican and acted out the Sleeping Kangaroo

On Tuesday, Kindergarten went to Clifton Gardens where they participated in a range of activities designed to develop students’ teamwork, curiosity and thinking skills. Highlights included a sandcastle building challenge, kite building, scavenger hunt and touch tank experience. It was wonderful to observe the children venturing outside of their comfort zones. There were squeals of delight and bravery when Kindergarten students were offered to hold the sea hare.

Throughout the week the children have been engaging in a variety of rotational activities with peers across the cohort. Activities have included an obstacle course challenge, Indigenous puzzles, tower challenge and creating the echidna from the Dreamtime story The Echidna and the Shade Tree.

Rescheduling of Prep Games Day

All families would have received the communication from Mr Webber this week regarding the public holiday next Thursday. As we will not be at school on this day, the scheduled Prep Games Day will now happen in Term 4 on a date still to be decided.

End of Term Prep After School Sport update

On behalf of Aussie Gems (our school gymnastics provider) and our Prep School Sport Coordinator (Ms Lucy Wrigglesworth), I would like to invite parents and care givers to come onsite and watch the final week of  the Prep Sport Term 3 Gymnastics. The students have been working very hard this Term in Gymnastics and would like to show you what they have been learning. There will be seating for you inside Dunnet Hall to come in and watch but for safety purposes please do not call out or attract their attention while they are participating.

Uniform

Although the weather is starting to warm up, it can still be cold in the mornings. Please layer your child’s uniform appropriately. Please ensure your child is dressed in clothes that are  part of the Redlands uniform. Please remember the importance of uniform, and ensure your child is dressed appropriately in accordance with school guidelines. A variety of warm and comfortable uniforms items are available at the Uniform Shop for purchase.

Toys at Preschool

We are blessed with beautiful resources at Redlands House, so we encourage the children to please leave toys at home. They can become lost or broken whilst at Preschool. If your child has a special item to share for ‘News’, please leave this with your class teacher in the morning. We have discussed this matter with the children. We thank you for your support with this.

Crunch & Sip, Morning Tea and Lunch

Just a reminder that each child has three breaks for food in the preschool each day – Crunch & Sip, Morning Tea and Lunch Can we please ask that these containers are clearly labelled with the child’s name and are placed in the appropriate location. Often staff are spending a great deal of time sorting through lunch boxes to find morning tea for the children. Please ensure each of the items is placed in the correct location at the beginning of the day.

Crunch & Sip: ‘Crunch & Sip’ is a break during class time when the children can refuel on a fruit or vegetable snack only (that is packed in addition to Morning Tea and Lunch) and rehydrate with water. The ‘Crunch & Sip’ break gives children the opportunity to eat the piece of fruit that might otherwise be left in their lunchbox. Children are also more likely to eat their fruit or vegetables and drink their water if their friends and peers are all doing it too! We ask that you provide this snack in a separately labeled container or zip-lock bag and place it in the basket on the sink in the classroom storeroom. Drink bottles will also be kept in here and the children will be able to refill their bottles at the sink as they need.

Morning Tea and Lunch are stored in separate containers in the fridge. Each class has a fridge door to open. Morning Tea containers are kept in the class basket in the fridge and Lunch boxes and stored on the shelf.

Please remember that we are an Allergy Friendly Centre (i.e. allergy aware) and have a number of children with serious allergies. Therefore, we ask that any food your child brings to Preschool does not contain nuts or traces of nuts or shellfish. We have a number of resources containing nutritious and well-balanced lunch box ideas available in our parent library in the foyer for inspiration.

Our Yr 7 students are well on their way with understanding the basics of the rowing stroke and have impressed the coaching staff with just how quickly they are improving. We have also been delighted with the coaching assistance that our Year 12 rowers have provided by coxing many of the Yr 7 crews in their first few weeks. The Yr 8s  have been a little unlucky with the weather but continue to impress with their efforts so far and we are all excited at what might be possible with this year group while the Seniors are refining their skills in small boats are covering some impressive distances already at this early stage of the season.

New Parent Info Session

Our Friends of Rowing support group is holding the new parent info session at Mosman Rowing Club in the Redlands bay this Saturday 17 September from 10:45 to 11:45am. This session is particularly useful for new parents to get some insight into what happens regarding regattas and camps along with the key role that our parents play in supporting their child/ren within the Rowing program on the home front.

Holiday Training

Once again we will be offering the holiday training sessions with a combination of on water and land training. Detailed information about these sessions has already been emailed to students and families regarding these optional sessions. Fitness Centre

With the 2022 ISA Summer Rep. Season literally on our doorstep, the  Fitness Centre will still be available to all students across the holiday period. With sessions across Week Two of the holiday period, the Fitness Centre is the perfect space to develop speed, fundamental movements and also power.

All students can access the morning sessions which run Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday starting promptly at 7:30am and finishing by 9:00am. These sessions are for all Age-Groups and all Sports so every student is encouraged to bring a mate along with them to the sessions.

Further details will be sent out via Redlands iLearn.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

Rugby 7s

Our Girls Rugby 7s and Learn to Play Program has had a fantastic start with brilliant numbers across all three available sessions. Sessions available to students include a Strength / Conditioning and Skill Session, a Tackle / Contact Session and also a Skill / Speed Session.

The Training Week starts with a Strength / Conditioning and Skill Session: Monday morning 6:45am – 7:30am. Across Wednesday morning 6:45am – 7:30am, we will have the Tackle / Contact Session.

All morning sessions will be held between the Undercroft Area and also utilise the Redlands Fitness Centre. These session will be focused on building up the strength, speed and mobility required to compete safely, as well as a strong foundational focus on the contact elements within Rugby and Rugby 7s

There will not be a Wednesday afternoon session next week, with the last day of the school term.

Students are encouraged to bring football / moulded boots to this afternoon sessions but runners are fine.

All sessions will be staffed by Redlands Rugby Coaching staff including our Director of Rugby Jack Gooding, our Lead Coach / Touch Football Coordinator Jordy Parsonage and also Wallaroo Piper Duck.

For any questions regarding these sessions, please contact the Director of Rugby Mr Jack Gooding directly on jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Rugby and Rugby 7s is a trial Sport and, as such, will not have any effect on Summer Rep. Sports. For all students wishing to join these sessions, they must understand that priority must be given to School commitments and also Summer Rep. Sport.

Rugby

With the season done and dusted we can now look ahead to not only the 2023 ISA Rugby Season and the preseason preparation, but also, and more importantly, our 2022 End of Season Presentation.

For this year, the Presentation will be held at the Balgowlah Bowls Club on October the 15th. Students, parents and carers are invited to purchase their tickets through the following link.

Having not been able to hold this event for the past two years, I could not be more excited to celebrate the wonderful accomplishments within this program and the successes of the students involved. There will be awards across all teams and also the announcement of the Redlands XV which is always a brilliant award and accomplishment for individual players across all Age Groups.

With Summer Sport Trials starting across the past week, I understand that the last thing on many of our students minds is the 2023 ISA Season but, with dramatic changes to the number of games as well as the competition we will face, preparation leading into the season is key. For the remainder of the Term and into Term 4, the Wednesday morning Fitness Session (6:30am – 7:40am) will workouts prepared, specific to Rugby Union and building up our strength, power and speed. It would be ideal to see as many of our Rugby athletes attend these sessions, especially all students who are wishing to trial for the 1stXV. Max Perry, along with Rory McMillan, are already training the house down across multiple sessions across the week.

In the event that year 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.20pm and participate in sport based activities.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

Junior Sport

Winter Season Complete

We have now come to the official end of our 2022 Winter Sport Season with our Girls AFL team having their final match on Saturday as the rest of the Representative Sport students had their first pre-season training. The girls enjoyed themselves immensely and special thanks to their coaches for the work behind the scenes. A few wash outs, a few losses and four wins saw the girls improve each week.

Pre-Season Summer Sport Trials

Well done to all those students who participated in Touch Football, Tennis and Basketball trials and training last Saturday in beautiful conditions. These continue this week with some Basketball teams having matches against other schools. Please refer to the quick links on Redlands Sport pages on Pulse for times and details.

Basketball and Touch Football singlets for new students joining these sports were distributed on Monday and the hire charge ($10) will be added to your account. Students are only required to wear these on match day on the Saturday, sports uniform for training is fine. Tennis uniforms can be purchased from the school unform shop ahead of Round 1 next term.

Term 3 School Holidays Program

For those of you looking for sporting activities for their children please see the QR codes below (click to enlarge) which are from contractors who are currently engages in our Wednesday sports program. There are a variety of options available within each of these sports.

Junior School Sport Pulse Student Challenge

With the new Pulse, there is significant scope and flexibility in terms of content, feedback, push notifications. The  new Pulse is aimed at students as well as parents. I spoke with all Junior School students at assembly recently and set them a challenge for them to ‘beat parents’ and clock up more visits to the pages on Junior School Sport. Not only will this enable them to know what they need, where they need to be and what time but this will also alleviate the stress for you having to navigate multiple pages for siblings etc. By encouraging your child to be responsible for their own School Sport, they will take an active role in managing their time which will be of benefit to you.

It would appreciated if you can assist with this ‘challenge’ in the coming weeks as both they and you prepare for the start of Summer Sport in Week 1 of Term 4.
