Issue 28 2021 - 09 Sep 2021

From The Principal

Through joining a wide range of Zoom sessions across the School, I continue to be inspired by the resilience, positivity, creativity and collaboration throughout our school community. The Come Dine with Us community cooking event with Catering Manager Joel Squire was one such event, in which people came together to share in a love of food and to learn new skills. It was wonderful to see a number of our younger students thriving in the kitchen.

A strong focus this week has been on mental health and wellbeing through the promotion of R U OK? Day and strategies to provide and seek assistance. I greatly appreciated the messages shared by our Yr 12 leaders in their Secondary School assembly and then was blown away by maturity of the student messages in the Yr 2 assembly. Wisdom from our younger students regarding how we can support each other were particularly powerful at this time. We were also treated to live musical performances by Nathanial Hao and Katerina Abe-Apostolou, which were very impressive.

We are very proud of the way that our Yr 12 students approached their period of online trial examinations and the way they are working through analysing the important feedback. There was a phenomenal amount of logistical work behind the scenes by staff to make this possible, which was greatly appreciated. The Secondary School Leadership Team are looking forward to working with the students on options for their programmed return to campus in Term 4 and on creative ways that we can celebrate their time at Redlands, with them and their families.

The Executive team are focused on further developing our COVID-safe return to On-Campus Learning plans for Term 4, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our school community. We are utilising research and experience from overseas schools who have been living with the Delta strain in their communities for some time. We also continue to collaborate regularly with a group of top independent schools through a key network. Next week we are undertaking a Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT) trial with the Junior School students who are attending on campus as essential workers’ children. Staff working with the students will also take part in the trial, which will be most beneficial in determining how RAT may potentially be utilised in various scenarios next term and into 2022.

2022 Peter Lennox Scholarship

I am delighted to announce that the 2022 Peter Lennox Scholarship has been awarded to Melissa Franco. Melissa is a currently a School Prefect at her Northern Beaches primary school where she has achieved a very strong academic record and has contributed to the full life of the School through Music (Clarinet, Piano and Voice), Drama, Sport (Football and Athletics) and leadership. Melissa is fluent in both English and Portuguese and is currently learning French. She is very excited to have the opportunity to join Redlands in Yr 7 next year.

I sincerely thank all parents, friends, alumni and the Class of 2020 whose generous donations made this means-tested scholarship and opportunity for Melissa possible. Due to the continued support of the Redlands community, we will be offering the means-tested Belinda Oxley Scholarship to a student commencing in Yr 7 2023. We look forward to being able to continue to provide a Redlands education to other exceptionally talented students, who would otherwise unable to attend the School, on an annual basis.

Community Update

We trust you are safe and well.

Our Come Zoom Dine With Us experience hosted earlier this week was a big hit. My thanks to Redlands Head of Catering and Chef Joel Squire and co-host Leanne Kells for pulling this successful initiative together and well done to the big and little cooks in their kitchens at home. It was lovely to see and share our families coming together. We have received many positive messages from our community and as such look forward to hosting another Come Zoom Dine With Us experience in early Term 4. We continue to explore other community initiatives as we contemplate an easing of restrictions and welcome your feedback.

We are fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong and generous tradition of giving. Our community plays a vital role in the growth and advancement of the School and our commitment to developing well-rounded, confident and compassionate young adults who will make a positive contribution in our global community.

An endowment fund for a means-tested Scholarship was launched in 2010 by our former Principal, Dr Peter Lennox. A gift of this nature provides opportunities for exceptionally talented students who will make a strong contribution to both Redlands and our society, as well as enhancing the diversity of our student body. Our goal is to grant one full-time scholarship to a Year 7 student each year. We are thrilled to announce that the Peter Lennox Scholarship, supported by the Redlands community, has been awarded to Melissa Franco. Melissa is very excited to be joining Redlands next year. You can read more about Melissa, along with former Redlands Teacher and author, Martin Pryor here.

If you are looking to connect with our community for support then please reach out to us here at the School or the passionate and diverse experience of our class and year group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support Redlands families.

We continue to monitor advice from NSW Health and the Association of Independent Schools of NSW and will keep our community informed. A reminder that all COVID-19 related communications to parents and other relevant information is posted on the COVID-19 Page of Redlands Pulse. Our ICT team are also available to provide remote technical support to assist students (and parents) and can be contact at isupport@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Keep well and stay safe.

Book Week Reflection – Martin Pryor, former Redlands History teacher

In  Week 7, Yr 3 had the privilege of hearing from Martin who has written a wonderful children’s book, Bungee: A Doggy Tail, published earlier this year.

“It was a wonderful experience to not only listen to the journey Martin took from school teacher to  published author, but also to catch up with a former colleague. Students asked very insightful questions and Martin provided encouraging and informative responses. It was a great session.” Year 3 Coordinator Peter Latimer.

Martin joined Redlands in 1990 as a History (or HSIE) teacher. He also ran Sailing camps in the school holidays, coached Girls Cricket and Hockey and took a group of Duke of Edinburgh students cycling.

His great legacy for Redlands, however, was the establishment of Sailing as a representative sport in 1998, becoming the inaugural MIC of Sailing. In 2000, the Redlands Sailing team were the Australian Combined High School Champions. By 2000, 96 students were involved in the Sailing program and Redlands had their own sailing base located in Mosman Bay (as opposed to being connected to a local club).

The childhood home of lifelong dog lover Martin Pryor was a haven for many pets over the years. Born and raised in Tasmania, his sailing career transported him around the world prior to settling in Sydney. When illness forced his retirement from teaching in 2016, Martin revived his love of music and he has since composed and recorded three original albums. A poem written for fun about the family dog transformed into a book celebrating the life of Bungee, and his wife and sons urged him to publish this, his first book. Simmering in Martin’s mind are further adventures of Bungee”.

This tale is about a lovable but lonely rescue dog who wakes up one day in a beautiful house he’s never seen before. How did he get there, who is his hairy new friend and what happens next?

R U OK?

It’s R U OK? day today and this has been welcomed by our Secondary School community throughout the week and especially today. Taking the time to ask another person if they are okay is so important and I really welcomed this as part of our conversations today.

Wellbeing Wednesday

Yesterday across the Secondary School, students participated in activities to support a healthy mind and healthy body, connecting to 5 Ways to Wellbeing. These activities improve psychological and emotional health and are based on extensive international research. A huge thank you to Dean of Students Marita Jansons and Yr 8 Advisor Lisa Vale, for designing the activities and producing the day.

The Day looked like this:

The day felt like this:

“Lots of laughter and giggling.”

“No-one saying – You are on mute!”

“I got to walk along the beach with a friend while socialising and enjoying the view.  It was a relaxing day, lowering my stress. I’m glad I got to spend time with a friend that I hadn’t seen in a while because it was quite fun.”

“I felt relaxed and happier.”

‘Not only just to relax, but to listen to the struggle of everyone else, when they made their dish. That one person who didn’t even turn on the oven to bake her cupcakes, or that one person with her dilemma of cooking.’

“I felt great being off a screen and not having to do as much work.”

“I got out of the house and walked with a friend. It was a great thing to wake up and do. This task was really refreshing compared to waking up to go straight to school every day.”

“I felt calm and relaxed.”

“I got to walk along the beach with a friend while socialising and enjoying the view.  It was a relaxing day, lowering my stress. I’m glad I got to spend time with a friend that I hadn’t seen in a while because it was quite fun.”

“I saw my mug cake explode in the microwave.”

Wellness Wednesday

Wellness Wednesday has taken the Senior Campus by storm with wonderful activities that are nurturing various perspectives of the students. There are foci on: Connection that is caring for the relational/ emotional; Being Active that strengthen the students’ physical being; Learning which is nurturing their intellect; Service which is prodding them to have an outward focus; Taking Notice which encourages them to attend to their spiritual self.

Five activities in all, but of course wellbeing is far more interrelated than five distinct domains. For instance, it is clear that good exercise lifts the emotions. The spiritual dimension is essential and effective at enriching all aspects of life for good wellbeing.

Secular psychologists have recognised and researched into the impact of spirituality and religiosity on wellbeing. They have found that young people who invest in this have a host of good wellbeing outcomes from reduced impacts of depression to increased protection against risk-taking and reduced use of alcohol and drugs, increased sense of purpose and higher resilience. Fascinatingly almost all the researchers use Christian definitions of spirituality and religiosity. They measure the attendance at services, personal bible reading and prayer and belief in a loving higher being. This is fundamental to Christian life and faith.

These research findings hardly surprise me. It has been my and many others’ lived experience as we have come to know the fulfillment of the clear words of Jesus that speaks of caring for us

“‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

“I have come that you may have life, life in all its abundance”

“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink…, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

“I am the resurrection and the life”

“Do not let your hearts be troubled, believe in me “

As our students and staff attend to their wellbeing, let me encourage you that now is the time to look afresh at Jesus, his life, claims, death and resurrection. Responding to Jesus leads to such riches of abundant life and good wellbeing which he offers to all.

Wellbeing Wednesday

On Wednesday, our Yr 12 cohort had the opportunity to engage in some self-care and also reach out to their teachers for individual support and feedback regarding the results of their Trial Examinations and best paths forward. The day worked well as an accompaniment to the Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills Session on Tuesday. Dr Salter’s presentation was highly encouraging and included practical advice in working flexibility into proposed study schedules, such as implementing wild card days; tracing schedules backwards from the final examination; and suggesting that students assist each other in studying. We thank Dr Salter for her ongoing support of our students and aim to implement an online zoom study hall where our cohort can collaborate in their revision of course content and examination technique.

Thursday: Year Meeting

This week our Head of Secondary School, Gemma Van de Peer, shared a video with Yr 12 which asked them to respond to a survey and obtain their collaborative input regarding the shape of student attendance in Term 4. There are various options for consideration and our Yr 12’s perspectives are an important component in attaining a meaningful and workable solution.

Friday Night Live

Our Arts Captains, Maddison Hunt and Felix Abraham, have been instrumental in organising this week’s “Friday Night Live” on 10 September at 5pm. Performances will be streamed via Zoom and will showcase a range of acts from across the year groups. We thank Maddie and Felix for this great initiative.

Year 12 HSC Design & Technology

This week, students in a number of practical subjects have finalised their major works. I was fortunate to see some of the projects as they were submitted this week and I must say, that I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the work submitted. Congratulations to all Yr 12 Design and Technology students and their teacher Ms Alannah Nastase for their efforts. Year 11

Young Women’s Leadership Seminar

Last week all of the Yr 11 girls were invited to attend the Parliament of NSW Young Women’s Leadership Seminar to discuss women in leadership. The education team run this program to provide an opportunity for students to meet an inspiring leader who can speak on personal and professional experiences to help young women aspire to leadership roles. Keynote presenter was Joann Wilkie, Deputy Secretary for the Economic Strategy and Productivity Group at NSW Treasury, who described many of the challenges she has faced as a woman in leadership positions and a sole parent of two young children. The keynote speaker was followed by an engaging and outspoken panel of female NSW politicians, Bronnie Taylor, Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women, Natalie Ward, Minister for Sport, Multiculturalism, Seniors and Veterans, and Kate Washington, Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services and Disability Inclusion.

Some of the empowering words from the panel included:

“being passionate and caring is a Super Power”

“don’t tolerate being told you are emotional as a woman”

“stop worrying about what everyone else thinks”

“you can only control how you react”

“never be ashamed as women how we do things”

It was great to see many of our Yr 11 students asking thoughtful and challenging questions on the chat function during the webinar.

Mullets for Mental Health

Several of our Yr 11 young men have joined ‘Mullets for Mental Health’ this month, an initiative run by Black Dog Institute’ to raise vital funds for mental health research. There have already been several outrageous haircuts carried out as can be seen below, with even Mr Richard Millham, one of our Yr 11 Tutors, coming on board and shaving his hair into a mullet. Well done to all of those involved and a particular mention goes to Finn Brookes and Hugh Sellar who arranged this event and have helped collectively, with all the other participants, to raise over $4,200 so far.

Please click here to donate to this important and worthwhile cause.

Mullets for Mental Health

As mentioned in last week’s Note Day, Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health has encouraged some of our Yr 10 students to shape and grow a mullet for the month of September to raise much-needed funds for mental health research. Fundraising for this wonderful cause allows better research into the early detection, prevention and treatment of common mental health disorders.

I have set the target of $2000 for Year 10 however we would love to fundraise more. Year 10 this week have fundraised almost $1000.00 which is an amazing effort.

If you would like to contribute to one of the students who has ‘styled-up’ a mullet (like Oliver Stevens pictured above), please access the team through: https://www.teamblackdog.org.au/fundraiser/RedlandsYear1020215428

Our Cowper Blue Tutor, Mr Jack Gooding, is also participating in Mullets for Mental Health and has his own fundraising page. Please feel free to donate towards Jack’s meaningful cause.  https://www.teamblackdog.org.au/fundraisers/jackgooding/mulletsformentalhealth

Year 9

Wellbeing Wednesday

A job well done to all students for making the most of this Wellbeing Wednesday opportunity by engaging in remote social activities, including: a year group walk, Riddle Me This challenge, Action for Happiness activity, Master Chef challenge, Photo Scavenger Hunt, Mindful or Mind full? activity and Team Time!

Below is a sample of the activities Yr 9 engaged in throughout the day and a few photos submitted by students to capture the essence of a day for mindfulness, away from screens and outdoors.

  • Making smoothie, pie and granola fruit bowls
  • Walking to Balmoral, walking to Manly, walking to shops or walking around the block
  • Finding photos of clouds, trees, animals, jumping poses and memes

A special mention goes out to Alfie Leach and Julius Keller who contributed a major effort to keeping the ocean clean by pulling in rubbish while surfing and being spotted in action by a Redlands teacher, Ms Louise Oswald. These selfless actions done when we think nobody is watching is what truly defines character.

Remote Tutor Trivia

During Weeks 4 to 7, Yr 9 engaged in various rounds of trivia.  First students completed a trivia for fun within their Tutor Group. Then in Week 6, students competed against the other Tutor Group in their House and finally students competed school-wide within their houses. Thank you to the Tutors and the Heads of House for organising and running these rounds of trivia.

Congratulations to Week 6 and Week 7 winners Ava Taylor and Chloe Jennings and the Roseby White Tutor Group!

Science Week Density Challenge Winner

Congratulations to Ethan Beggs, the Week 5 Science Week Challenge winner for submitting a photograph that clearly showed three levels of density.

Mullets for Mental Health

Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health has encouraged some of our Yr 8 students to shape and grow a mullet for the month of September to raise much-needed funds for mental health research. Fundraising for this wonderful cause allows better research into the early detection, prevention and treatment of common mental health disorders.

Year 8 are quickly reaching their original target of $2000, however we would love to fundraise more.

If you would like to contribute to one of the students who has ‘styled-up’ a mullet, please access the team through:

Yr 8 Chinese Creative Characters Competition

This week, the two Yr 8 Chinese classes participated in an activity called Year 8 Chinese Creative Characters Competition. They have been focusing on the topic Food and Drink this term. In this activity, students demonstrated their character knowledge by choosing their favourite word they have covered this term during our Zoom lessons, and use food or other objects around the house to “write” and create the Chinese characters.

Positive Energy

In any given term there will always be ebbs and flows of both energy and busyness but perhaps more so during a whole term of Remote Learning during a period of lockdown in Sydney. Which is why it is remarkable to have felt and seen the continued energy, efforts and commitment of our staff and students throughout the term but even more so as we approach the final week of Term 3. Over the course of this term, I have enjoyed more opportunities than normal to teach classes and be part of classrooms and time with students has always effused energy for me; indeed, it’s one of the reasons why I became a teacher.

When people are passionate and dedicated about what they do, they radiate positive energy. And I have seen the many creative ways in which our staff have created this energy as they have changed or adapted learning and social connection experiences to engage, connect and challenge their students. In return and just as important to recognise, we have been so proud of how our students have navigated their ways almost seamlessly into a virtual classroom environment yet continued to demonstrate all of the traits and values we would expect of them, both learners and people.

And of course, on behalf of staff, I again express gratitude to parents and carers for your roles in this partnership centred around supporting your children as we continue to work together in hitherto untold ways.

Our aim is always to start a term strongly but finish the term stronger and I look forward to a big final week before the deserved fortnight of rest and recharge for our School community.

Wellbeing Wednesday (Wednesday 15 September)

Following on from similar positive student-focused events in the Prep School last week and the Secondary School yesterday, next Wednesday will see our Junior School students and staff enjoy a different pace and range of activities on Wellbeing Wednesday, a day where our staff will lead a series of live Zoom activities for each year group to join in and have some fun. Each year group will have seven half-hour activities in between breaks before finishing the day with Sport as usual and a time to get outside and be active.

Materials

For some activities, it would be helpful for students to have resources and the additional information is shared below to assist in preparation.

Yr 3 will do some cooking with Yr 4 Coordinator, Ms Cleary, and would need the following ingredients: rice bubbles, three Mars Bars, golden syrup, butter, a block of milk chocolate and a lamington tray or equivalent.

Yrs 4 & 6 will also have an opportunity to do make pizza scrolls with our Head of Catering, Mr Joel Squire. To do this session, the students would need the following ingredients: 2 sheets of frozen ready-rolled puff pastry (thawed), 3 tbsp pizza sauce, 100g sliced ham, chopped (or 100g tomato, mushrooms, or olives for vegetarians), 3/4 cup (65g) grated cheddar, 1 egg (lightly beaten).

Yr 4 will be doing a creative art activity with a wooden spoon so if students are asked to use the next few days to look for any creative arts materials such as textas, paint, coloured paper/card, wool, popsicle sticks, googly eyes, pom poms, feathers, etc. They will also need to have strong glue to attach the items to the wooden spoon.

I know the students are excited for this variation to their timetable and I am grateful to all of the teachers involved and our Dean of Students, Mrs Clinton, for her coordination of the day, which will also be important recognition for the efforts of students and staff throughout the whole term of Remote Learning.

Week 10 timetables will again be up on Redlands Pulse for parents to access on Friday.

Rapid Antigen Testing Trial for On-Campus Children of Essential Workers

For parent awareness and as already communicated to our essential workers families, next week the School will trial rapid antigen testing for our onsite Junior School students as well as the staff who will be working with them.

This is one measure the School is currently investigating to ensure the safety of students and staff as we make plans for students to return during Term 4 as per the government guidelines. Rapid antigen testing provides a screening tool to detect possible cases of COVID-19, especially in people who may be asymptomatic. Tests can be performed easily and onsite with test results returned within minutes. More information on rapid antigen tests can be found on the NSW Department of Health site here.

Specialist clinicians from Antigen Logistics will oversee the daily testing process and Redlands staff will be assisting them with the supervision of students each morning during the testing process.

Parents of these students are reminded to submit the online request for again for on-campus learning for the last week of term with booking requests closing again at 8pm on Friday 10 September to allow sufficient time for staffing to be organised based on the numbers.

Please click for Week 10 request: Junior Campus booking

As always, please note that any student’s attendance is dependent upon their health. Students must be kept at home if they show any signs of an elevated temperature or a cold. Any student who presents at school with even the mildest symptoms of COVID- 19 will be sent home and not permitted to return before a negative COVID-19 test result and are symptom free. Students must also not attend if they have been identified by NSW Health as either a casual or close contact of a confirmed case.

Come Dine With Us

I loved this picture of Yr 3 student, Emily Robertson, and the wonderful story this picture told as Emily joined other Redlands students and families in Monday evening’s Come Dine with Us virtual experience led by our Head of Catering, Mr Joel Squire. Joel has been leading similar culinary classes for staff this term and the idea to offer this possibility to parents came from a Junior School Class Parents meeting earlier in the term.

Emily loved making this sumptuous meal for her family and was so excited in the lead up to the evening which didn’t disappoint and I share Emily’s mum’s thoughts below too which captured the essence of the evening perfectly.

Thank you for such a fun novel change to Monday night dinner! Emily loved being able to independently follow on (with some background supervision) and was so delighted to serve up such a delicious dinner. She was very proud of herself! Thanks again to you and the team for continuing to engage and inspire the kids in these unusual and challenging times. It makes all the difference!

My thanks are extended to Joel Squire and I know that he was so happy to be able to connect with our students and families in this way.

Being Safe and Responsible Online

In our assemblies this week, I reminded students of the technology responsible user guidelines in their Student Planner which they and you would have signed at the start of the year. This is an important document that helps students to live our School Values in an online space as well as help to keep them and others safe.

Parents are also reminded of our Redlands Cyber Safety Hub specifically for our community, which contains current, research-based information and assistance for our families and staff. I encourage any family who has not explored this resource to do so.

Yr 7 Language Choices

Earlier this week, our Head of Secondary School, Ms Gemma Van de Peer, spoke to our Yr 6 students sharing early information about the language offerings in Yr 7 for them.

Along with Ms Van de Peer and other staff on both campuses, we are already looking at how we can create meaningful and beneficial experiences during Term 4 for Yr 6 ahead of moving to Secondary School in 2022 and will provide parents with this important information in due course too, given that the intended format of the Orientation Day scheduled for 2 November would not be possible with the restrictions in place for schools.

Holiday Reading

We continue to have a steady stream of students borrowing books from the Arnold Library again under our COVID-safe protocols, which has brought joy to students and our library team has them have lovingly packaged up books.

The library will not be open in the upcoming break so do contact them if you would like a selection of reading books for the holiday period. A reminder of the process is outlined below:

  1. Parents should email the Junior School library directly here with book requests/genre.
  2. Our part-time library staff will process requests and package books up to be collected from the table outside the Junior School reception building.
  3. The library staff will confirm via return email the time and date only one parent/child should come to collect their named book package.
  4. At collection, you must wear a mask and sanitise hands at the entry gate.
  5. Returning books will be via the book return drop box only which will be outside the school (again, please wear a mask and sanitise your hands at the gate). Any students currently with library books that they wish to return can do so in this way.

Please note that all book collection times will be outside of arrival and departure times for students of essential workers.

R U OK Day

Some of our classes embraced R U Ok Day this week and shared their R U OK pledges in  Assembly times. R U OK day in the Prep School is a chance for our staff and students to share the message that connecting often with friends and showing them that we care is so important.

The Yr 2 students highlighted the message by wearing yellow to their Zoom Assembly and sharing ways they can reach out to their friends and check in on them. Hearing and reading some of the pledges made by our students was so encouraging. A wonderful demonstration of how our Prep students truly value the essence of friendship now more than ever.

An example of a Yr 2 R U Ok pledge:

I pledge to ask my friends and family if they are ok by asking them and showing them I care. I will do this by sitting with them and asking them to play with me. I won’t just ask this on Thursday, I will ask this every day.

Acts of Kindness

Letters to Bougainvillea

Our Yr 1 students demonstrated a wonderful act of kindness this week by writing letters to elderly residents at Bougainvillea nursing home. Our Year 1 learners showed concern that the residents were lonely as they were unable to see their families during this lockdown period. They put their heads together and decided that the best way to connect with them and to show that they cared was to write! Mrs Hunt was able to then pass letters on to the nursing home and within hours, return messages were being written! We are now in the process of sharing these letters with our students.

I am so proud of the compassion and care demonstrated by Yr 1 and for making authentic and thoughtful connections with a different generation.

Zoom Free Day

Friday 17 September

Our last day of term, Friday 17 September will be a Zoom Free day for our Prep students. The day will begin with a normal roll call session with teachers, followed by a message from me to wish everyone a lovely break. Following this, the children can then choose different activities from an uploaded grid.

Mrs Gilroy Returns

We are very excited to advise that Mrs Beth Gilroy will be returning to Redlands in Term 4. Beth has been on maternity leave and is eager to return to the Redlands House team. Beth will join the Transition Gold teaching team on Thursdays and Fridays in Term 4. Beth has a wealth of knowledge and will assist the team in preparing the children for the important transition into Kindergarten. Many of the Transition Gold children already know Mrs Gilroy, and I’m sure they will be very excited to see her face again on campus and online again.

Provocations for Learning

We often have families comment on our beautiful learning environment and the enticing way our educators set up experiences, we call these provocations.  In early childhood teaching the term provocation is derived from the Reggio Emilia Approach. They are fantastic opportunities for learning that we incorporate into our suite of learning activities. For children a ‘Reggio Inspired’ provocation is an open-ended activity that doesn’t have a prescribed outcome, instead it is designed to stimulate ideas, initiative and imagination for and amongst children, whether they choose to explore their ideas alone or in groups. Deliberate and thoughtful decisions made by the teacher to extend the ideas of the children. Teachers provide materials, media, and general direction as needed, but the children take the ideas where they want. This allows children to develop skills of creativity, inventiveness and flexibility in thinking, planning and reflecting.”

Mullets for Mental Health

For the month of September, a number of Secondary School students, along with Mr Jack Gooding our Director of Coaching: Rugby and Athletic Development, are shaving in mullets in support of the Black Dog Institute and Mullets for Mental Health.

FOLLOW MR GOODINGS PROGRESS

Mr Gooding is documenting the whole process, including the cutting of his hair and the progress towards a true flowing mullet across the whole month. Along with a blog detailing the process, there will also be a number of ‘invitational barbers’ who will give their thoughts around mental well-being as well as offering their assistance in manicuring the mullet.

This is a wonderful opportunity to support a charity and have some fun during this lockdown period.

https://www.teamblackdog.org.au/fundraisers/jackgooding/mulletsformentalhealth

To date, our Redlands teams, coming from all Secondary School Year Groups, along with Mr Gooding, have already passed the $10,000 mark for donations. This is an amazing effort from all involved and we can only imagine the fantastic mullets that are currently gracing our online classrooms and zoom sessions.

Click on the link above to see Mr Gooding’s blog and his celebrity barbers. This week, he followed up with our Director of Football Mr Gerry Gomez.

Important changes to Royal Academy of Dance Examinations, 2021

RAD Graded Ballet Examinations

This year Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy had registered our students to enter The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Examinations in August, they were then postponed to November.

The Royal Academy of Dance has now confirmed that there will be no “face to face” examinations held in Sydney for the remainder of 2021.

We understand that this may be disappointing for students and parents. However to acknowledge, reward and celebrate our students’ achievements in ballet training for 2021, Redlands Academy will hold Redlands ‘In House’ examinations, online for all of our prep and junior RAD students.

All students will receive a Redlands ‘Certificate of RAD Achievement’ and move up to the next Grade/Level in February 2022.

Music

Music and ‘Soft Skills’

A central focus of our Musical learning at Redlands is the ability to improvise and to thoughtfully explore new ideas, connecting these with existing understandings and frameworks. Never has our ability to adapt and innovate, to be flexible and collaborative been a more universally applicable skill.

Redlands Music pedagogy is embedded within an integrated Kodály and Orff Schulwerk approach, enriched by the Harvard Project Zero Visible Thinking  framework. Indeed Zoltán Kodály himself said:

“The characteristics of a good musician are a well-trained ear, a well-trained mind, a well-trained hand and a well-trained heart. All four must develop together in constant equilibrium.”

Whether we’re taking time to nurture our heart and motivation for music-learning itself; training our minds to enquire more deeply within the music we’re engaging with; or locating our personal goals to help us ground why we want to train our hands and ears / aural skills in support of these, all four of these aspects are central to our balanced growth as musicians and we must find ways (at home and at school) to nurture these now and always.

From our youngest learners who are learning how to focus and have a violin lesson via a screen, to our Year 12’s who are developing their final HSC & IB performances amidst extraordinary challenges, we commend you. We are so very proud of you, our musicians for your innovation, adaptability and resilience – attributes that will serve you well beyond your Music-making.

Competitions

Composition Competition Finalists announced in last week’s Note Day (with feedback offered on iLearn), and the studio workshopping process will begin once we return to campus. Our attention returns to our plans for the Senior Instrumental Competition that was scheduled to take place this coming Monday evening, showcasing 16 extraordinary instrumentalists from our Senior Campus ranks. Our accompanists are diligently working to create backing tracks to support the Finalists’ preparation, but the ultimate form of this performance competition in Term 4 will likely be shaped by the level of restrictions that are in place when we return to On-Campus Learning.

We encourage the finalists to keep your repertoire ‘simmering’, and we will have formal communication to you by the end of the term regarding the event’s reimagining. Thank you for your patience.

Learning Music from Home

All extracurricular and cocurricular Music lessons, classes and ensembles continue in their now established home-learning patterns.
