Issue 27 2023 Term 3 Week 8 - 07 Sep 2023

From the Principal

This term I have asked members of the Executive to “shadow” a student or group of staff for a day so that we gain deeper insights into the experiences of students and staff at Redlands. This professional learning experience allows us to “walk in the shoes” of students or staff and develop a deeper understanding of areas of the School by joining them for their classes or various activities for a day.

On Monday I had the great privilege of joining Kindergarten White for a day of their learning as part of my shadowing experience. After the Father’s Day events in the morning and a quick “sip and crunch”, Mrs Guha went through our InitaLit readers for the week. We then had our PDHPE class with Mr Carter and Ms Longworth. Mackenzie, Saskia and Violante helped me navigate the various circus skills stations, and then I got quite a workout playing the Shark v Fish tag game. (However, I did feel that the sharks were picking on me when I was one of the fish, but I got them back when I became one of the sharks!)

As we were refuelling and rehydrating at morning break, Violante taught me some Italian words and then I got to see the amazing climbing ability of many of the Kindergarten students on the climbing frame.

We then listened to a scary story and answered some comprehension questions before writing our own beginning, middle and end sentences of the scary story. The Tricky Word Tree was really useful to help us correctly spell the words in our stories, and I appreciated Willow and Kathy sharing their stories with me.

We then moved to our numeracy activities and Ronan, Reimi, Violante and I used our mini whiteboards to come up with as many ways we could add, subtract or group numbers to make the number of 12. It was beneficial using the mini teddy bears to help us come up with the different possibilities. As we finished a bit early, I joined Bowie working through the Maths extension problem that was displayed on the wall.

We then broke into our literacy groups and I joined Matthias and Violante as we tested ourselves on the flashcards to spell out some of the tricky words. I think we did pretty well. I did have a few minutes at the end to join some other students working on the 300 piece jigsaw puzzle and we were getting close to finishing it. Unfortunately, I had to leave at lunch but look forward to spending more time with Kindergarten White soon.

I would like to thank Ms Guha, Mr Carter, Ms Longworth and, most of all, the amazing students of Kindergarten White, for allowing me to be a member of their class for the day. I can honestly say that not only was it a highlight of this week, but also of my year to date.

Redlands Parent/Carer Arnhem Land Midawarr Trip

Two weeks ago week we informed our community about a truly unique opportunity for parents and carers to visit Arnhem Land for a cultural immersion with the Yolŋu community from Sunday 26 – Thursday 30 May 2024. After years of developing our relationship with the Yolŋu community through Culture College and providing this amazing experience to our students, we are now offering it to parents and carers.

You can now see a video produced by Culture College of our Year 9 students’ experience earlier this year here and, if you are interested in potentially partaking in this experience next year, you can reserve a place at our information evening on Thursday 14 September here. Places for the Arnhem Land trip will be limited so please express your interest to attend early to reserve a place.

New Redlands Uniform

Over recent weeks staff representatives of the Uniform Steering Committee have met with parent representatives across all three sections of the School to get feedback on the new uniform and help inform some decisions. We look forward to launching the new uniform before the end of term with an e-brochure, video and detailed information on the transition.

Community Update

We are fortunate to have an altruistic community at Redlands.  Parents and friends of the School proudly support the enrichment of our students’ lives in many ways, through regular donations and by giving one of the most special gifts of all – their time.

Redlands, like most independent schools, has a Foundation that supports the School’s strategic and philanthropic programs.  The Foundation Advisory Committee (FAC) provides the School with specialist counsel in support of the short and long-term objectives of these important programs.  The FAC’s experienced stewardship of our philanthropic program enables Redlands to continue to invest in the growth and advancement of the School.

Scholarship funding is a key focus of the FAC and this week we were delighted to announce the awarding of two means-tested scholarships. We look forward to welcoming Lalibela Gregory, our 2024 Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship recipient, and Jackson Trude, our 2024 Peter Lennox Scholarship recipient, at Redlands next year. To read more about our scholarship recipients and our popular Melbourne Cup event please check out the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

A reminder that we will be hosting an information evening on the Redlands Parent and Carer Midawarr Arnhem Land Trip scheduled on Thursday 14 September. To whet your appetite on what you might experience on this once in a lifetime trip, click here to watch a video of our 2023 Year 9 cohort and their teachers immerse themselves in this ancient culture.  The information session will provide more detailed information on this truly unique experience scheduled for May 2024 and offered exclusively to the Redlands community. This is quite literally a once in a lifetime opportunity to deeply explore miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma Festival. To reserve a place at our information evening please click here.

It was a pleasure to have our Dads and special friends on the Junior Campus earlier this week.  Our students and staff were delighted and excited to host our guests before School for coffee and snacks in the Piazza.

My thanks to those who donated uniforms, and to the Redlands Uniform Shop and the ever active and passionate Redlands Parent and Friends Association (RPFA) for their collective effort in running the Second Hand Uniform Sale last. This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlands Foundation Scholarships Awarded!

It’s truly a special moment! The gift of education is one of the most valuable contributions to society and it’s wonderful to see the efforts of many individuals culminate in such a rewarding outcome, while acknowledging the accomplishments of Dr Sue Morey AM and the legacy of Dr Peter Lennox. Thank you sincerely to all who made this possible!

Our two Redlands Foundation Scholarships have been awarded to Lalibela Gregory and Jackson Trude, who will commence in Year 7 in January 2024.

Lalibela Gregory is a School Captain at Alexandria Park Public School where she is in the Opportunity Class. She studies ballet, piano, clarinet and voice and is a talented sportsperson involved in many school and club teams such as AFL, Soccer and Basketball at representative level. She is also a strong public speaker who has won multiple public speaking competitions.

Jackson Trude attends Balgowlah North Public School where he is Vice Captain. Jackson is heavily involved in sport, including state swimming and plays the Acoustic and Electric Guitar. Jackson’s mother and grandmother are both Redlanders and his great-grandfather Bruce Adams was one of the founding Directors of SCECGS Redlands Ltd in the 1970s.

This year our journey continuous to raise funds for the sixth means-tested scholarship. These scholarships are funded from an endowment fund and therefore provide an opportunity for Redlands to continue awarding these scholarships after the six year period. These scholars make a significant contribution to the life of Redlands and are aligned with our school values of Compassion and Social Responsibility. For more information, please visit HERE or contact me directly.

It was wonderful to celebrate with Year 12 at the annual House Morning Teas this week. Second-Hand Uniforms

Thank you to everyone who came to support the Second Hand Uniform Sale of summer and sport uniforms last week. We raised another $2,500 for the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund.

We are planning on holding another sale on Tues 12 Sept from 8am to 9am and Wed 13 Sept from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

We are also working with the Redlands Sustainability team to determine the best strategy for recycling old uniforms. If you have good quality summer uniforms or sports uniforms to donate, please drop them off at the Uniform Shop. Otherwise, please hold on to your winter uniforms for the time being as both the RPFA unit and Uniform Shop do not have space for storage. Please note we are not collecting any items for recycling (eg old sports uniforms) at this time. Please also do not bring in: used socks; dirty, stained or torn items; items purchased from external parties (Marks & Spencer’s, Next) as we cannot sell these items.

Learning Experiences

Yr 11 have approached their examinations with maturity and calmness this week, as Yr 12 conclude their final lessons before the end of the term and celebrate with their House for the House Morning teas, which have taken place for them at Tutor time each day this week. It’s been great to hear the joy in the students’ conversations about their cocurricular and sport dinners they’ve been attending in the evenings and see them prepare for the start of the Summer Sport season. Yr 7, 8 and 9 are travelling well in the lead up to the end of term and aware their Term 4 examination blocks are on the horizon. It’s certainly a productive time of the term and the learning buzz on campus is palpable as students consolidate and extend themselves across a variety of spheres.

Speech Night 2023 – Change of Venue

Due to the current redevelopment of the event spaces at Luna Park we are moving a number of our bigger events, including the Secondary School Speech Night and Yr 12 Prize Giving Ceremony and Valedictory Dinner, to one of Sydney’s premier event spaces, The Star Event Centre in Pyrmont. Further information will be provided in Term 4 on the Speech Night program, including a comprehensive venue guide to assist students and parents with the change in venue.

BioTech Futures

During National Science Week, Yr 10 students heard from twenty-three-year-old Betty Zhang, founder of not-for-profit Melbourne Bioinnovation Student Initiative (MBSI). MBSI aims to bring together young scientists, engineers and clinicians to work on projects in digital health, medtech and synthetic biology. Betty shared some of the incredible innovations occurring in Australian universities and what it takes to commercialise these breakthroughs through investment. She invited Yr 10 to step outside of their comfort zone by signing up to BioTech Futures, a 4-week innovation and mentorship program. The program empowers our brightest young minds through connecting them with world-class academics to think creatively about scientific inspired solutions. Five Redlands teams from the Yr 10 cohort, including two currently at Winter School, are taking part in the challenge and their topic areas range from biodegradable metal implants for limb reconstruction to sustainable energy splitting greenhouse gases. The teams will have multiple touchpoints with their mentors, receive instruction on scientific research and citation and have the chance to present their findings at a Symposium hosted by the University of Sydney, where they will hear from Dr Peter Newman (USYD) and Dr Fang Chem (UTS).

Student and Community Safety Update – Stay in Place Drill

Evacuation and Stay in Place drills are an essential part of our safety and risk management practices at School.

We treat drills as if they are real and model our response to the students as a learning exercise. IN the Secondary School, the students are excellent at drills. They respond appropriately and calmly and I always feel so privileged to lead the community when I see how maturely the students approach an evacuation.

In the coming weeks we will be holding a Stay in Place drill, formerly known as a ‘lockdown’. Many things can prompt a Stay in Place but in essence, a Stay in Place occurs when there is a real or perceived danger to the School site, and a Stay in Place is a measure to enhance student and staff safety. A clear procedure exists for us to navigate a Stay in Place drill and our students know the secret message that is relayed to them which is a signal to adopt ‘stay in place’ measures. There are also clear processes for communicating with students after the drill the purposes of the drill and the affirmation they are safe. Year Advisors know when the drill will take place and usually have key information about students so they can support anyone who may feel excessively heightened or unable to manage their distress. If you would like to provide any additional context as to why your teenager may need additional support to navigate this drill, then please reach out to the Year Advisor before the end of this week.

The House Spirit Fair takes place next Thursday and our Yr 12 students look forward to one of their final opportunities to have fun, engage the younger year groups and raise funds for the Legacy gift.

Yr 12 Unite For Their House Morning Teas

The House Morning Teas were unforgettable occasions, that allowed for each Yr 12 House to take a moment and truly appreciate the journey they have embarked on during their time at Redlands. The morning teas were filled with nostalgia, camaraderie, and gratitude.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the House Captains: Yasmin Coletran, Joe Griffiths, Daisy Oliver, Oscar Whatmough, Lachlan Binnekamp, Isabella Havryk, Briar Carter and Patrick Walker. Their leadership and commitment to their respective Houses have been instrumental in creating a sense of belonging and unity among the Secondary School students. They all set a shining example for all of us to follow.

Thank you also to the Heads of House: Ms Claudia De Leo, Mr Joseph Montz, Mr Alex Thomas, and Ms Ashleigh Moore. Their guidance, support, and unwavering belief in each of the House Captains have been pivotal over the last 12 months.

A special mention is also due to Kim Flatman and Dana Casimaty from the Redlands Foundation for their efforts and commitment to making this event so special. It provided the perfect backdrop for us to come together and reflect on the past six years and look towards the future as the Class of 2023 become Alumni. Dana and Kim also provided Yr 12 with a Redlands Rhino plush toy as a special gift to remember Redlands.

The highlight of the House Morning Tea was undoubtedly the opportunity for Yr 12 to gather in their House Groups, sharing stories and reminiscing about their experiences from Yr 7 to Yr 12. It was also an opportunity for Yr 12 to give thanks to the many staff who have supported them throughout their Redlands Secondary School Journey including key staff such as the Yr 12 Tutors, Mr Darren Taylor and Ms Lucy Benjamin. The collage of nostalgic photos adorning the photo wall was a brilliant touch that brought back countless memories. Each image told a story, and together, they encapsulated the essence of each House Tutor Groups journey at Redlands.

Yr 12 are Now Money Confident!

Money Vest’s Dominic Aarsen’s recent visit to Redlands High School brought forth an essential message: the significance of financial education transcends economic status. With experience in both upscale wealth management and financial empowerment initiatives, Dominic’s journey highlighted the universal need for effective money management tools. His establishment of Money Vest underscores the importance of financial literacy for everyone, regardless of their financial background.

Moving from catering to the ultra-rich to founding Money Vest showcased Dominic’s transformation from serving the privileged few to empowering the masses. His insight that financial goals are shared across all strata of society dispels the notion that money solely divides us. Money Vest’s mission, aimed at educators, students, and parents, emphasizes the democratization of financial understanding. Through practical workshops, the “Money Confidence” program equips students with actionable skills, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

The crux of Money Vest’s objective is simple yet impactful: to provide the financial wisdom we often lack upon leaving school. This resonates particularly with the Yr 12 students at Redlands, on the brink of independence. As they step into the world equipped with newfound financial knowledge, they are better prepared to navigate life’s fiscal intricacies.

Dominic’s journey and Money Vest’s mission align with Redlands’ commitment to empowerment, offering a lasting lesson in financial confidence for the Yr 12 cohort and beyond.

Well done to Maddie Barwise and Hugo McKay who received an award In Recognition of Excellence for Football which highlights their dedication to Football over their last six years at Redlands.

IB Drama Performance Success

Well done to the following IB students who performed their Solo Performance examinations last Friday. IB Theatre students were required to explore a theatre theorist’s work and apply a major convention to their own work and to their individually selected theatre materials. Every IB student performed brilliantly and it was evident that a considerable amount of time and effort was invested in their performances.

Last Day of Yr 11 HSC and IB Examinations

Congratulations to all students for completing their first two-week examination block as an HSC or IB student. Yr 11 have conducted themselves extremely well throughout this period, creating study plans, executing and following study plans, utilising the flexibility in time and space in the Library and Learning Hub and presenting early to ensure they were in the right mindset as they entered the examination rooms. Mrs Katharine Boase, Mr Darren Taylor, Mrs Jane Sharman, Mrs Lucy Benjamin, Mrs Lisa Ole and all supervising teachers have been extremely impressed with their serious approach to examinations. Well done to all students.

We look forward to welcoming Yr 11 back to regular lessons tomorrow. They will also have their Yr 11 Camp Briefing during Tutor and Leadership announcements at Lunch in Liggins Quad.

Students will be receiving examination feedback throughout the remainder of term. During Tutor, students will be asked to reflect on their preparation, their performance and what they might do differently next time. They will also be asked to reflect on how they felt during this examination block and consider possible strategies to assist with some common feelings: Felt rushed, made careless errors, ran out of time, mind went blank, misread or misinterpreted questions or felt very stressed or anxious.

Photos below of students completing their last examinations this morning.

Year 11 Camp

Year 11 Camp will be held Monday 9 October to Friday 13 October (Week 1, Term 4). We will be located down in the Snowy Monaro Region and our High Country Campus. Student Congratulations

Isaac Brooks competed in the U18s 800m at the ISA/GPS Invitational Carnival at ES Marks on Saturday. He finished in a close 2nd place with a 3 second Personal Best of 1:54s which is 5 seconds under the Australian Athletics Championships U18 qualifying standard (1:59.00). An exceptional result! Congratulations Isaac!

Daisy Thomas has been competing in the Junior Worlds Ski Championships over these last three weeks. She has been managing examinations, competitions and learning a lot in this process. We wish her all the best as she continues to compete in the Obsidian Team Challenge as part of Winter Games and other possible invitationals before she returns to Sydney. Congratulations to Daisy and we look forward to welcoming her back soon!

Congratulations to Alissandra Braden who has just been identified by the Australian Olympic Committee and Australian Sailing as a reserve sailor for the Pacific Games in November. She has been identified as a top sailor in Australia and looks forward to competing in the Queensland Youth State Championships in Queensland as well as the Sail Melbourne International Championships later this year.

R U Ok? Day

R U OK? Day serves as a National Day of Action across Australia, encouraging individuals to initiate conversations that possess the potential to profoundly impact someone’s life. This concept, though simple, is incredibly potent: by posing the query “R U OK?” and genuinely attentively to the response, we can cultivate an environment characterised by support and empathy, where individuals feel acknowledged, heard, and upheld. Amidst our busy lives, it’s all too easy to neglect the well-being of those in our midst. R U OK? Day serves as a poignant reminder that even modest acts of kindness and concern can exert a profound influence on someone grappling with life’s adversities. Whether it be a friend, a classmate, a teacher, or a family member, sparing a moment to inquire about their well-being can represent the inaugural stride toward extending the assistance they might require.

To mark this significant day, a small group of Year 10 students embarked on a visit to the Junior School, where they actively participated in a Q & A session during their assembly. Their discussion focused on anti-bullying efforts and the crucial role of being an “upstander,” someone who takes action against bullying. Additionally, they devoted their efforts to heightening awareness surrounding cultural inclusivity.

In a dynamic demonstration of solidarity and support, Year 10 students have committed to incorporating a “splash” of yellow into their attire on R U OK? Day. This collective display conveys a resounding message that they are unified in their mission to champion mental health awareness and kindness.

Winter School

A brief visit to Winter School allowed us to reconnect in person with students from our cohort, who have been greatly missed. It was heart-warming to witness our students are not only enjoying themselves immensely as they improve their skiing abilities but who are also fully dedicated to the academic program, which has already instilled a sense of routine and discipline.

Yr 12 IB Composition and Performance for Dance

This week a number of students assisted our Year 12 IB students with their final piece of assessment work in Dance. It is a wonderful experience for our younger students to see the effort and work that goes into submissions like these and also provides an insight into senior studies.

Thank you to Amelie Dewar, Emma Cruttenden and Isabelle Monty for their efforts as dancers for the Year 12 works.

Changes to Undercroft Rules

In order to dissipate some of the current energy in the space underneath the Lang Gym where the Year 7 and 8 lockers are, on Monday during our Year 8 Assembly we have informed students that the rules concerning the space have been changed.

The main changes are:

  • Handball in now to be played on the Redlands laneway where there is plenty of open space in the sunshine
  • Students should on use the space for sitting down and eating, so no running or active games
  • Students should take things out of their lockers and avoid loitering around these areas

Very quickly we have seen a positive change in the way this space is used – thank you and well done Year 8!

Our Daily Business

While Note Day is often used to highlight big events achievement, it is often important to remember what the daily ‘job’ (as Ms Van De Peer articulates it) of a person in Year 8 is – being a student.

This involves being in the classroom daily participating in learning activities which differ greatly depending on the subject.

Please see the snapshots below of Year 8 students going about their daily work.

Year 7

A Busy Term Means there is a lot to Juggle

With increased home learning and assessment commitments, continuing sport and cocurricular pursuits, and a range of other activities and events at Redlands, Yr 7 continue to learn the importance juggling their commitments and finding balance in their school experience.

And what better activity to bring this into clarity than actually learning how to juggle?!

So, on Friday of last week, I visited Dumolo Blue to teach them how to juggle. As you can imagine, it was quite a chaotic affair, with tennis balls flying every which way across the room. Hand coordination, balance and a fast eye are all essential for juggling, and, while not everyone managed to find complete success in the short 20-minutes we had developing the skill, it was pleasing to see everyone giving it a ‘red hot crack’ and having a laugh about it too!

A few students did begin to find their flow and pick up the skill by the end, showing that persistence and effort can pay off!

Final Yr 12 Buddies Visit to Roseby

Last Friday also marked our final guidance session with our Yr 12 buddies, this time with Roseby receiving their support. Across this term, a collection of Yr 12 students have offered valuable advice to our Yr 7 students, sharing their knowledge and experience, and modelling many of the service values we cherish at Redlands. It has been a positive experience and hopefully one which will inspire Yr 7 to support others in younger years in the future.

A Visit from the Police Liaison Officer

On Tuesday, Yr 7 were visited by the school’s Police Liaison Officer, Lynda Hart, to discuss with the cohort their responsibilities under the law. A range of useful, age-appropriate information was communicated to the group around what constitutes illegal behaviour, and how they can ensure they do not get involved in or harmed by any illegal behaviour.

Officer Hart explored a variety of topics with Yr 7, to develop their understanding of inappropriate and illegal behaviour, including vandalism and graffiti; harassment and bullying (including cyber bullying); sharing images and videos online; and shoplifting. She had some very important advice to pass onto Yr 7 and I took note of a few key words of wisdom from her presentation:

  • “If you see something that you think is wrong, step up and tell a trusted adult. Be an upstander not a bystander. Being a ‘snitch’ is not a bad thing.”
  • “Harassment and bullying are never right. There is no excuse to make people feel bad; call that behaviour out.”
  • “The moment you do anything online, the moment you type something or post it, you cannot control where it goes. Nothing ever goes away.”
  • “If you’re cranky or upset, don’t go near your device; you might send something you regret.”
  • “If you are being bullied online, stand up and speak out; screen shot anything and then report, report, report; tell a trusted adult straight away.”
  • “If someone asks for something from you online and you don’t want to give it, you are in the power position. Don’t give it. Talk to a trusted adult.”

She also suggested that students have an ‘open door’ policy at home with parents / carers, meaning that they are open to their parents / carers coming into their room and asking to see what is on their phone. She emphasised the importance of children talking to parents / carers about what they are seeing online, so they can be kept safe.

It was a valuable session, which hopefully offered some important reminders and new pieces of advice for Yr 7 in how to navigate their increasingly complicated world safely.

Hey, I just met you and this is crazy, but here’s my class, creating music, maybe…

In my weekly wandering of the halls of Redlands, I stumbled across Yr 7P getting right into their Wednesday afternoon Music lesson, making music videos for their recently created EDM tracks. Students were having fun collaborating on dance moves, developing choices in cinematography and seeking to make some final tweaks and refinements to their musical scores. It certainly looked like an engaging activity and one which gives them an insight into the decisions and refinements essential for many contemporary musicians.

I was pleased (and extremely surprised!) to hear that one group’s primary backing track is Carly Rae Jepsen’s 2012 classic, Call me Maybe. I wonder if you can guess which group from the photos below…?

Head of Junior School

Hello from Yr 3 Camp

As you read this, our Yr 3 students are enjoying their two-day adventure on their first overnight camp in the Southern Highlands and I am thoroughly enjoying the time away with them and colleagues exploring the outdoors and being immersed in activities. The opportunities that these types of outdoor experiential learning experiences provide us as teachers to get to know the students on a far deeper level is priceless and likewise, the students get a greater sense of who we are as people too.

Wednesday’s on-campus morning of activities with the Outdoor Education Group staff who are with the students and staff for the two days was invaluable in building connections and helping the students get a sense of the activities to come and this allowed the group to hit the ground running as soon as they arrived.

We will write more about the trip next week after they return this Friday afternoon and I extend my gratitude to the team of teachers who look after the children with immense care and commitment whilst leaving their own families too.

Primary Debating Finals

Congratulations to our Primary A debating team who have been successful in qualifying for the semi-final of the Sydney Debating Network Competition. Primary B also had a successful competition narrowly missing the finals by a slim margin.

Our Primary A team will debate against Riverview this Friday evening and be judged by a panel of adjudicators. I know you will join us in wishing the team of Alice Bernath, Bernice Cheung, Jenna Forrest, Raj Jhinghan and Alexia Tsacalos all the very best for this important debate.

Living our School Values

This week, we were delighted to welcome some of our Yr 10 students, most of whom were students in the Junior School, to our Junior School assembly to speak to the students about some of their experiences in how they live our School Values. The Q & A style conversation, expertly guided by two of our Yr 6 Wellbeing Leaders, Alex Read and Aggie Storch, provided our Junior School students with real-life examples of how they too might demonstrate these values day in day out, both in school but importantly outside of a school context. There is something particularly compelling observing students listening intently to students and our Principal, Mr Corcoran, and I watched at the complete engagement of the Junior School students during this part of the assembly and I extend my gratitude to our Yr 10 students: Lachie Green, Krishna Gupta, Imogen Jeffrey-Bilich, Ale Scali, Aiden van Hulsen and Millie Winton for their time, preparation and considered responses.

Community Connections

The last fortnight has seen both our Grandparents and Special Friends Day and Father’s Day celebrations allow us to welcome families and friends to classrooms and on campus. These important gatherings always bring a rich sense of our wider community and I am grateful to the many Redlands staff who have contributed towards the organisation and planning of these days.

Junior School Speech Day 2023 – Change of Venue

Please note that due to the current redevelopment of the event spaces at Luna Park, where we have previously held our Junior School and Secondary School Speech Days, we will be moving both events to one of Sydney’s premier event spaces, The Star Event Centre, in Pyrmont.

Further information will be provided in Term 4 on this year’s Junior School Speech Day which will take place at 11am on Wednesday 6 December. This will include a comprehensive venue guide to assist students and parents with the change in venue.

It was lovely to see so many people attend and to be able to take the morning to enjoy being with students, engaging with them in classrooms and having some fun together. Our Prep students always impress with their angelic voices and witty conversation, I think the amount of iPhones rivalled the Mother’s Day crowd!

Secondary Sport

It has been great to see so many students enjoying their sport, we are speaking to the students about their decisions and how they have to learn how to push yourself, you have to learn to leverage the power of your decisions and you they’ve got to learn how to take actions when they don’t feel like it. you don’t have to make decisions with your goals, you don’t make decisions with logic.

95% of our decisions are made by how we feel at that moment, and that is part of the problem, students need to take control of the moment and leverage the power of your decision making. ‘Do you feel like getting up?’ ‘Do you feel like going to training?’ ‘Do you feel like doing those extra training sessions?’ no you probably don’t. We make decisions based on our feelings and sometimes that robs you of your joy and opportunity.

If you accept the fact that you may never feel ready and you may never feel confident and that you may never feel courageous and that’s okay, but you can still push yourself forward  and you see yourself becoming the person that takes action or speaks even though your voice is shaking, you’re the kind of person that has bias towards moving instead of a bias toward thinking, guess what happens… you have developed the skill of confidence and courage.

‘the only person who can tell you ‘you can’t win’ is you, and you don’t have to listen’
Jessica Ennis-Hill

The 16 – 19 Years NSW All Schools Track and Field Championships will be Saturday 23 September – Monday 25h September and the 12-15 Years NSW All Schools Track and Field Championships will be Friday 6 October to Sunday 8 October.

(Registrations close 8 September (this Friday) at 12pm.)

Ages 12–15 – Registrations and event information can be accessed here

(Registrations close Friday 22 September, 12pm)

Redlands Athletics Head Coach Mr Nick Walker and Redlands Coach Mr Rich Frost will do their best to get out to the events to support athletes; however, students will need to get their own way to and from Sydney Olympic Park for their event.

If you are registering for the event, please communicate that with Mr Walker (nwalker@redlands.nsw.edu.au) and myself.

Students who are currently trialling for 1sts teams have been emailed their schedule with added Fitness Center sessions. Students should be attending 1x session a week, Monday or Wednesday afternoons or Wednesday Morning.

Students in Junior and Intermediate programs this week have conducted some on field fundamental movement tests. As reiterated to students, these tests will not have a weighing on students grading into teams, rather to help improve what we as coaches can offer to support student athletic development.

There are both ‘on field’ and ‘in gym’ tests to complete. Head of Strength and Conditioning – Mia Lundquist, will be collating results to help shape gym programming specific for Touch Football students, as well as running injury intervention programs for our sport over the remainder of the season.

These programs will support students in becoming better athletes. We encourage all Touch football students to make themselves available over either a Wednesday Morning (6.30 – 8am), or any Lunch times in the Fitness Center, between now and the 14th of September to complete the ‘in gym’ tests.

If students wish to connect to pathways for Touch Football outside of school please reach out. The school has strong connections with Norths Touch where students can get involved in representative programs and refereeing.

AFL Wrap Up

Well done to all our Yr 5 and Yr 6 girls and the coaching staff for their involvement and enthusiasm over this term in their IPSHA AFL girls season. The two teams play their final match this week and we wish them the best of luck. It is worth noting that it was only due to ‘girl power’ that we were able to have two teams this season. A small number of girls recruited over 14 girls to play so we were able to enter into the competition.

Term 4 Sport Representative Pre-Season Trials and Training

With AFL finishing up this week this is a reminder that we are recommencing our Representative Summer Sport season on Saturday 16th September. This involves pre-season trials and training session that will run alongside our normal Wednesday sport program. For example, if your child is currently in a Non Rep Sport such as swimming each Wednesday but has elected Rep Basketball as their Term 4 Sport choice then they will continue with swimming this term each Wednesday but will be required on the Saturday to be allocated to a team.

Attendance is compulsory for those students who have nominated for these representative sports. For those girls who nominated girls-only basketball as their Term 4 Summer Sport, we will use the preseason to grade and allocate students in teams in preparation for the start of their Term 4 season.

To view the times and details of your child’s preseason session, please select here.

Saturday 16 September Schedule

Term 4 Sport Student Lists

For all Non Rep Sports as well as rep sports you can view your child’s Term 4 Sport selection under your activities through the Redlands App. It will show up like below but won’t have any sessions listed until Term 4.

Term 3 Summer Pre Season Training

Commencing Term 3 there will be a combination of both OPTIONAL and COMPULSORY preseason training for the following sports;

  • Representative Mixed Basketball (Term 1 teams plus new joiners) for students in Years 3-6
  • Representative Touch Football  (Term 1 teams plus new joiners) for students in Years 5&6
  • Representative Tennis (Term 1 teams plus new joiners) for students in Years 5&6
  • Representative Girls Basketball for students in Years 3-6

Welcome back to our returning students who played in these sports in Term 1as we recommence our season from Round 6 through to 12 but also a special welcome and thank you to those students who signed up to play a Representative Sport in Term 4. You will be allocated to a team (Basketball and Touch) or ranked in Tennis this term in preparation for next term.

Yr 12s, we are hoping that you received an evening that you will never forget!

Mr Corcoran thrilled us all with his superb dance number and was joined quickly by so many Dads (and a few mums). Great job, we were so impressed that you all secretly practised and surprised your children so successfully!

It was also a pleasure to have former Head of the Academy Karen Martin with us for the evening helping us to honour the past, celebrate the present and embrace the furture, and a treat to meet Kelly Palmer the first ever Jazz teacher at Redlands, who happens to be Ms Vanessa’s sister.

A big thank you also to Virginia Clayton and our Friends of Dance Team, everything ran so smoothly. Kate Goodsall, those flowers were magnificent!

It was also exciting to be able to unveil our new name and logo, and vision for the Academy. We will be handing out pamphlets to our Junior students throughout the week so that the whole Redlands Dance Community can see our ideas and aims for the future.

I sent a thank you to Mr Sheeran for his appearance from you all too!

And to see the amazing photos that were taken on the night please see our Dance Awards Pulse page.

Drama and Theatre

Congratulations to Yr 12 IB Theatre Solo Performers!

Congratulations to our Yr 12 IB Theatre performers for their exceptional performances of their solos on  31 August and 1 September at 6:30pm in the Drama Studio. The students had researched theatre theorist, Anne Bogart, and identified an aspect of her theatre practice to use in their Solo Performances. A big thank you to the Yr 12 IB Drama teachers, Kathryn Smith and Sarah Sparke, for all their efforts and hard work on the Year 12 IB Drama Class and in addition, to Kathryn Smith for organising the Performance evening. All theatremakers performed to an outstanding level, below is a reflection from Daniel Close. Congratulations to:

  • Sabrina Blasco, Collective Rage
  • Daniel Close, In the Ruins
  • Lily Hobbs, Hazing the Monkey
  • Lucy Horton, Electra
  • Jonathon Klauzner, Crime and Punishment
  • Claudia Lalich, Miss Julie
  • Maya Little, Stories I Want To Tell You In Person
  • Jess Marshall, Much Madness
  • Julia Murphy, Picasso’s Women
  • Daisy Oliver, Laughing Wild
  • Eve Philips, Crimes of the Heart

“A frustrated wife. An eccentric playwright. A Euripides heroine. A Russian law school dropout. A schizophrenic serial killer.

These are just some of the eclectic mix of characters portrayed by the Year 12 IB Theatre students in their Solo Performance pieces held last week on Thursday and Friday. Tasked with weaponizing Anne Bogart’s theories on the Viewpoints as directorial tools to inform the creation of their monologues, all eleven students demonstrated outstanding creative and performance skills, providing their audiences with an immensely engaging and moving experience.

In my own piece, playing the infamous King George III in In the Ruins written by Nick Dear, I used the Viewpoints of Repetition, Gesture and Architecture to explore power dynamics and the emergence of complex mental health phenomena within individuals with such authority. Directorially, I hoped the piece would therefore instil pathos from the audience toward the character and would help evoke a reaction of catharsis – done through ironic humour created through repeated gestures and symbolic set elements like the haphazardly scattered newspaper surrounding a lone centre-stage table.

Another student, Eve Phillips, decided to position a large white screen behind her piece, her body casting on the screen an ominous shadow that reflected her character’s inner monster – all whilst delivering a beautifully rich, restrained monologue from the perspective of a ‘50s-esque Southern housewife. Meanwhile, Julia Murphy’s monologue from one of Pablo Picasso’s many women, Dora Maar, featured an easel adorned with an empty frame, lit forebodingly in the Drama Studio with the help of Zach Pincini – demonstrating the overarching dominance of Picasso over the course of the two’s often violent relationship. Moreover, Lily Hobbs’ masterful use of Topography – with her character walking back and forth in a vertical line, helped the audience experience the sense of entrapment she feels in her flailing relationships with faith and her husband.

These are just some of the many examples of incredible directorship exhibited by the class, with our incredible audiences noting the unique visions, impassioned creativity and moving performances shown on both nights. As our last performances of IB Theatre, these were a bittersweet ending to two years of outstanding effort demonstrated by a class that has elicited on the highest levels of enjoyment and reward in our schoolings that are ending in just a couple weeks. A huge thanks to all of those individuals who made the Solo Performances possible, with special recognition to Ms Esther Lamb, Ms Kathryn Smith, Ms Sarah Sparke, Ms Amber Virtue, Mr Zach Pincini, Ms Andy Patterson, and Ms Vicki Frerer.” (Daniel Close, Year 12 IB Theatre Student)
