Father’s Day Morning

Another wonderful school event last Friday, saw the fathers congregate in the Piazza for a Junior Campus breakfast. To their children’s delight, some very excited dads took the opportunity to show off their jump rope skills to see how many skips they could do in one minute; the competitive spirit was strong as a few dads went back more than once to beat their score. Afterwards they accompanied their children into the classrooms for some collaborative learning time. Yr 2 created an “iDad” where they brainstormed some qualities that best-described their fathers. Yr 1 enjoyed some rotational activities where dads were spoilt with music and massages, read books together, played board games and drew pictures of one another. Some Kindergarten classes made paper airplanes and colourful ties which the dads promised to wear for the whole day. This, together with some wonderful construction activities, made for a busy morning. Thank you to the Junior Canteen, the Facilities team and Yr 6 students who assisted with the organisation and handing out of tasty treats.

Bunnings Horticulturalist Visit

Previously we have mentioned students in K-2 sowing and caring for seedlings in preparation for the Spring Fair. These seedlings have been re-potted into beautifully decorated pots and families will have the opportunity to buy their child’s pot at the coming Fair, or the week prior. An email will be sent to all families explaining the process of buying and collecting the pots before Spring Fair, if this is more convenient for you. To further enhance the understanding of plant life cycles and growth, two Horticulturists from Bunnings visited the students to discuss requirements and stages of plant growth and cultivation of soil, along with the benefits of having a worm farm.  At the end of the workshops a thriving worm farm was donated to the Prep School. Students will now be able to see these little combusting power machines in action. Our Waste Free Wednesday program has combined with this initiative positively, with Prep Enviro Leaders collecting vegetable and fruit waste to feed the worms who will produce waste to help our seedlings and garden grow.

Student for a Day

Last Friday, I was delighted to spend a few hours in One Green as a ‘student’, as they were the class who raised the most amount for our Jump Rope for Heart campaign by the middle of the term. The peaceful atmosphere as we painted our Spring Fair pots, whilst listening to classical music, was just lovely and I was given some important advice from the students on how to go about painting my pot. I enjoyed my time with Ms Angus and the students of One Green; thank you for making me feel so welcome and congratulations for continuing to raise awareness for heart disease through your wonderful contributions to Jump Rope for Heart.

Flexischools and Canteen Ordering

A gentle reminder that the cut off for ordering lunch on Flexischools is 9.00am daily. Please note that any late orders after this time will only be able to receive a freshly made sandwich, due to the organisation and planning time needed for our other menu items. Thank you for your understanding.

Clubs

A reminder that the last Clubs for Term 3 will be held on Wednesday 12 September. Clubs will not be held in Week 9 and 10 due to Yr 2 Camp.

Yr 2 Curriculum Camp (Thursday 20-Friday 21 September)

The detailed letter regarding the Yr 2 Curriculum Camp was emailed to families and has also been uploaded to Redlands Pulse in addition to medical forms that may have been needed for your child (eg. asthma, allergies, dietary needs etc.). All forms needed specifically for your child and the online consent for Land’s Edge should have been finalised by Monday 3 September. If you have yet to do this, we would request that you attend to this as a matter of priority.

The Kids Cancer Project

Next Friday 14 September, our Junior Campus students are encouraged donate a minimum gold coin donation to wear mufti clothes with ‘a touch of gold’ as we again support the research work of The Kids’ Cancer Project, a charity that holds particular significance for our Redlands community.

Seniors and Transition Gold Parent Teacher Interviews

Redlands House Seniors and Transition Gold Parent Teacher Interviews will take place from Monday 17 September. Bookings can be made via the School’s Interview website. Bookings have now opened, please follow these instructions to book in a convenient time for you.

Father’s Day

It was wonderful to see so many fathers at Redlands House last Friday. The children were very excited to show off their classrooms and participate together in some entertaining activities. Occasions such as this provide important links between home and preschool. Children thrive when families and educators work together in partnership to support young children’s learning.

Spring Fair Plant Purchasing

Students in the Preschool have enjoyed decorating and growing seeds for the Spring Fair. Families will have the opportunity to buy their child’s pot at the coming Fair, or the week prior. An email will be sent to all families explaining the process of buying and collecting the pots before the Spring Fair, if this is more convenient for you.

Dog Safety Program

The Senior classes participated in the Responsible Pet Education Program this week. This program assists children to develop skills and strategies for dealing with dogs, and how to stay safe around dogs.  Educating children ensures the child-pet relationship is not only physically and emotionally rewarding but also a safe one. The program allows children to become better prepared when dealing with dogs outside the home and throughout the community.

The Kids Cancer Project – Mufti Day

Next Friday 14 September, our Junior Campus students are encouraged to donate a minimum gold coin donation to wear mufti clothes with ‘a touch of gold’ as we again support the research work of The Kids’ Cancer Project, a charity that holds particular significance for our Redlands community.

Study Tips

On Monday this week, Dr Prue Salter spoke to our Yr 12 students to give them some tips and advice as they prepare for their upcoming HSC and IB Final Examinations. Her talks are always well-received by our students and while she specifically focused on advice for Yr 12 students in their upcoming study and revision some of her tips below are relevant for all students in their learning.

  • Make the most of all assessments (review them carefully) to learn from any mistakes so that you can improve next time
  • Use a wide range of study and revision techniques to find what works best for you
  • Organise and plan ahead of time so that you can develop an effective study timetable
  • Create a proper home learning environment without distractions
  • Give yourself regular breaks when you study (every 30-45 minutes) and try to do something active during this time (ie – a five minute walk but not five minutes on your phone)
  • Be sure to get plenty of sleep (8-9 hours a night), drink plenty of water, keep up with exercise and eat healthy foods
  • Keep everything in perspective.

Below is an excerpt from Dr Salter’s recent newsletter which offers some other advice, as well.

“Students sometimes ask ‘what is the best way to study?’. The answer, there is no best way. An important lesson for students to learn is that everyone learns in different ways, everyone has different approaches and preferences, and what works well for one person may not work well for another. This truth applies to all aspects of effective learning – time management, research skills, writing skills and so on. There are certainly good techniques and strategies available in all of these areas, and also approaches that work well for the majority of students. However, it is essential that all students try different techniques to see what works best for them. Preferences could also change over time, so it makes sense to at least once a year, stop and reflect on approaches to learning. What did you do, what worked, what didn’t, what should you change, what should you keep, and what new things could you try. This is what ‘metacognition’ is all about. It means taking the time to try and understand more about the process of learning and your role as a learner. Students who take a metacognitive approach to their learning are much more likely to improve. How can you find out different study techniques to try? Talk to the people around you – friends, siblings, parents – ask them what techniques they have used. Also ask your teachers what they would recommend for their subject.”

Greenlands Week

During this week’s assembly our Yr 12 Prefects celebrated Greenlands Week. During this week the Secondary School community has focused on issues around sustainability and our environmental footprint with various activities in Tutor Groups and lunchtime. Our Environment Captains, Kat Stuart and Marcos Brisson, have successfully led a number of initiatives this year in the Secondary School, most notably an organised paper recycling system which we look forward to seeing our younger Year Groups continue and build upon in the future. I would like to congratulate them for their leadership in this area over the course of the year. Despite the humourous video showed at assembly displaying me as the resident “litter bug”, I do strongly believe that each of us around the School can do our little bit to improve our local environment and “leave it better than you found it”.

Blackmores Run

As mentioned in last week’s Note Day, our Yr 12 students, led by Emma Woodward, are urging members of the Redlands community to join them in participating in the Blackmores 10km run on Sunday 16 September to raise money for Headspace and awareness for mental health. Donations can be made here and students, parents and staff can sign up to run here. I hope to see many members of the Redlands community joining us on the day.

Flu Season

Should you suspect your child of having Influenza or any of the variants of Influenza including Human Metapneumoviris, and they are currently undergoing testing for the same, please be advised that you must keep your child at home until the results are known. It is imperative that your child does not return to school whilst you are awaiting results. In the event of a positive result, please let the school know as soon as possible. For further information and Influenza management guidelines, please refer to the following NSW Health website links          https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/influenza_factsheet.aspx                https://www.cdc.gov/surveillance/nrevss/hmpv/clinical.html

We appreciate your vigilance and cooperation in keeping our school community healthy.

Chaplain

Chapel is an integral part of life at Redlands. As a school in the Anglican tradition, we gather weekly to connect with God. This is a valuable time for students to slow down, quietly reflect and be challenged. Celebrating as a community is a key part of our time together with community singing.

While there have been some students who have supported their community by leading singing, the opportunity is there to allow more students to participate by using their gifts in music.

Recently we have had a group of students who have attended Chapel Jam on Thursday lunches in our new Music Centre. Led by Ms Amy Richardson and supported by Mr James Canfield, the musicians prepare new songs for Chapel. The students help work out arrangements and suggest possible music. This is a great encouragement to the student body as Chapel becomes a space for student leadership and great music.

While we currently have Yr 7, 8 and 9 it would be ideal to have students in each Year Group participate in the music. As the Secondary School Chaplain I would like to thank these students for their humility, service and leadership.

Year 12

Pastoral Care

This week, Yr 12 attended a study skills session titled The Final Exams Countdown with Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services. The aim was to help Yr 12 put together a plan of attack for between now and their final exams. The session focused firstly on what students need to do before the end of term. It is essential that study notes are completed, students work through their returned exam papers thoroughly (using the checklist provided), pinpoint areas of weakness and seek help on these, and endeavour to do as much practise of essay writing and past examination papers as they can before the end of term so they can obtain feedback from teachers. These last weeks of school are also the time where some students do not necessarily use their class time as effectively as they could, however after making the plan for the weeks just prior to the final exams, students can now see how quickly the time will go and how important it is to use the rest of this term to the full. Yr 12 also reviewed the study techniques they are using and looked at ways to improve and avoid common study mistakes using research about the brain. Each Yr 12 student also filled out a grid with their exam timetable, planning the best way to allocate their study time over the weeks prior and during the final exams using the guidelines that Dr Salter explained. Having a plan in place can take away a lot of exam anxiety, as students know what they need to do to move forward and can see the steps they need to take to make the most of the last few months of their final year of school. Parents are encouraged to review the booklet from the session with students and have students explain their study plan as often discussing these ideas can clarify students’ approach. Parents can also find extra study skills tips here  and students can download the slides from the session and extra copies of the grid here. All Secondary students at Redlands also have access to a great study skills website to help students develop their skills. Year 9

Camp United Nations for Girls Sydney

On Saturday 1 September, Carmen Brisson and I were lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to the Girls in Politics full day event. At the event, hosted by the United Nations, we had the chance to extend our knowledge about the United Nations and how they operated. Furthermore, we were given the opportunity to enhance our public speaking skills while presenting speeches when running for Secretary General or President of the General Assembly. We strongly recommend that other girls, if given the opportunity, participate in events such as this one. We found the day to be profoundly beneficial, informative and it gave us the rare chance to experience a day in politics. Yola Reinecke

Pastoral

Last Friday 31 August, Tutor Group 9 Dumolo Blue led the Yr 9 Assembly. One of the activities in the Assembly was an obstacle course where two students from each House were selected to negotiate a series of activities. One student had to complete the course without the use of their arms, whilst the other student had to encourage their team member by offering them strategies and words of wisdom. This was to demonstrate that regardless of a physical setback, you can have the strength and power to do anything you can put your mind to. As well, it recognised the importance of friends for support when overcoming obstacles in life. This activity was linked to our work on being proactive and the TEDx Talk that our students viewed on Turia Pitt. The team who won was Sofia Gaastra and June Zhang from Roseby. The girls demonstrated both agility and excellent communication skills. Congratulations girls and many thanks to all students in 9DB and their Tutor teacher Ms Rachel Beggs for their organisation of a wonderful assembly.

Athletics

Congratulations to Olivia Donoghue, Emma Mahon and Liberty Jacob who competed at last week’s Athletics NSW Nitro School Series. Schools from across NSW competed in teams across nine unique running and field events. Our Intermediate Girls team finished in 8th place with 1,610 points which was a tremendous effort because many of the larger independent schools had multiple teams entered in the competition which made for a very competitive evening.

Congratulations to Beau Davies who ran a personal best in the 100m at the Invitational Carnival over the weekend. Beau ran 12.08 which was almost a second quicker than his previous personal best. Congratulations also to Samuel Harrap who threw a personal best in the Javelin, throwing 25.74m which was also almost a metre further than his previous personal best. A final congratulations to James Barwise who completed his first 3000m on the track in preparation for the ISA Athletics Carnival next Tuesday.

Achievements

Japanese classes went to the Japanese Tanken Centre on an excursion last week. They were exposed to Japanese language and were able to use their skills in numerous cultural activities.

“The Yr 8 students learning Japanese this year were privileged enough to have the opportunity to visit the Tanken Centre at the Kirrawee High School. It was an amazing experience to learn more about the traditional Japanese culture and language. The two Japanese teachers, Abe Sensei and Okawa Sensei, came on the fascinating excursion and helped us get a deeper insight on the language and culture. For recess and lunch, we got to eat delicious Japanese food and Obentou. During this excursion, we participated in many activities that allowed us to excel in our learning of the Japanese language. These included guess the celebrity, Kendama (trying to catch a wooden ball on a short stick), interviews and number games that were all said and written in Japanese. Although it was challenging at times, it was lots of fun!

On behalf of the Yr 8 Japanese students, we would like to thank Okawa Sensei and Abe Sensei for organising and allowing us to take part in this enjoyable experience.” Julia Saunders and Lara Cody

Visual Arts

Students have been working diligently on the Portrait program. Each student was asked to draw their classmates portrait. There were some absolutely beautiful works, and students are to be commended on their fine efforts.

Pastoral Care Focus

This week, students continue with the focus on Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind, from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The principle behind this habit is that mental creation precedes physical creation. All things are created twice. We create them first in our minds, and then we work to bring them into physical existence. By taking control of our own first creation, we can write or re-write our own scripts, thus taking some control and responsibility for the outcome.

Can we please encourage students to ensure that they store away all items in their lockers at school and keep it locked. There are numerous students who either do not have locks on their lockers or choose to leave their personal belongings outside their assigned locker.

Year 7

Greenlands Week

This week, Redlands celebrated all things recycling. Students attended a Prefect Assembly where our Student Leaders shared useful information and humorous tips and hints on recycling. During Pastoral Care on Wednesday, Yr 7 participated in a fun activity which promoted paper recycling within the school. Thank you to our Environment Prefects, Kat and Marcos, for this initiative.

Service in Yr 7

On Friday, students will be visited by Ms Coleman our Service Coordinator. Ms Coleman will introduce the Redlands Service program to students and kick off our Yr 7 Service learning activities. Activities will consider the act of service, simple acts of kindness and service within our community. In Term 4, Yr 7 will also have the opportunity for some Service opportunities.

Study Skills Home Learning and Personal Study Habits

With a very full assessment schedule through Week 6, now is a great time to reflect on habits and think about what may be working and what may need adjusting. Some students are naturally able to find a good balance between all the facets of their life: schoolwork, sports, activities, friends, family, technology and all of the other aspects of life that keep us busy from when we wake to when we sleep.

Other students struggle to fit their schoolwork in during the evenings and weekend. Some students come home after school and just sort of ‘wait’ until they feel like working. And what happens is that they never feel like it so they just don’t get started!

Some students start work not long after they get home, but they drag their work out over the whole night doing work in front of the TV, or the computer or their phone. It takes them the whole night, but they hardly get any work done and they don’t feel like they have had a break at all.

A much more effective way to approach home study each evening is to keep your school work and your personal life separate. Don’t do your work in front of the TV, don’t do it while on social network sites or while using messenger apps, instead work in 20-30 minute blocks of time and during this time make the conscious choice to actually remove or turn off things that are going to distract you. As it is only for a short block of time, it is bearable. Train yourself to have breaks from your distractions for the blocks of time when you do schoolwork.

By doing this you will learn to really focus and concentrate on what you are doing for a block of time. You will be amazed at how much work you get done and how productive you are during this time. Then at the end of that half hour period you have a proper break and really enjoy your free time.

You can find special software for blocking distractions on computers and phones in the Dealing with Distractions unit on Study Skills Handbook (username: redlands | password: 68results).

Father’s Day Breakfast

It was a joy to welcome so many Junior School dads to our breakfast last Friday and I hope that the event was the start of a memorable weekend for Redlands dads. My appreciation is extended to our catering team who helped us to look after our guests.

Morris Gleitzman Author Visit

Last Friday, the Junior School had the pleasure of hearing from the Australian Children’s Laureate, Morris Gleitzman. Morris spoke to Yr 3 and Yr 4 about the writing process where he focused on story openings. He then talked about how he structures his work day, researching for books and taking risks in writing stories. The students loved hearing him read from a number of his books, including his latest book, Help Around the House.

After lunch it was the Yr 5 and Yr 6 students’ turn to enjoy hearing Morris speak and he focused on his Once series. He spoke of his family’s connection to the Holocaust and why these stories were personally important to him. Our students asked a number of insightful questions including how he was able to use humour with such a serious topic; he explained at length how he believed that humour can be uplifting and unifying.

We were thrilled that Morris stayed in the Library over lunch and answered the many questions our students posed, commenting on the high level and depth of questioning skills our students demonstrated, before he ended the day signing more books and chatting to the students in the Library.

These rich experiences add immense value to students’ appreciation of literature and I thank Mrs Wiebe for organising this special visit for students and staff.

Netball Finals

Last Friday, four of our Junior School Netball teams competed in the Northern Suburbs Netball Association Semi Finals. All of our teams have competed with great enjoyment and improvement over the season and I was thrilled to see two of our teams (one from Yr 4 and one from Yr 5) progress to this Friday’s Grand Finals. The Yr 4 team showed great spirit, resilience and heart in coming through extra time and a sudden death knockout situation to win 12-11 and their unbridled excitement was a joy to behold. Following this our Yr 5 team battled through a final quarter in torrential rain to overcome their opposition and I look forward to cheering both teams on again this Friday. We acknowledged the girls’ achievement in assembly and I know they would appreciate any support from friends too. The Yr 4 Final is at 5pm and the Yr 5 Final is at 6pm; both games at Willoughby Leisure Centre.

Students Travelling on School Buses

In our assembly this week, I reminded students who use public transport of some of the important expectations that Redlands but also Transport NSW have for all students, in particular, reminding them to give up their seat to elders. Students in NSW are very fortunate to have free school travel and part of Transport NSW’s expectations are that they abide by these guidelines. Please take a moment to also talk through them with your child if they use buses.

Behaviour on Buses

  • Use appropriate language
  • Offer seats to adults including people with a disability, elderly or expectant mothers
  • Do not play music at such volume that it may distract the bus driver or other passengers.

Safety on and near buses

  • Keep bags and other items clear of the aisle
  • Wait for the bus in a quiet and orderly manner – including at bus interchanges
  • Stand away from the roadside until the bus comes to a complete stop
  • Allow other passengers to leave the bus before stepping onto the bus in a single line
  • Cross the road where and when it’s safe to do so, use crossings/traffic lights where available.

We will again hope to have some merchandise for sale too as well as a raffle for one of the organisation teddy bears.

Netball

As the Netball season draws to the business end of the season for the NSNA teams, we are continuing to train and play to the best of our ability. We are happy to announce that all five Semi Final teams are playing in the Grand Finals this Saturday at Willoughby. The Yr 7 teams will all play at 8.00am with the Yr 8 and 9 teams both playing at 10.00am.

Last weekend the 7 Blue team had a sensational game and had a close fight on their hands against Monte. Monte took a solid lead going into the 4th quarter of 13 – 9. Redlands took to the court with a solid game plan in mind and stopped Monte scoring any goals in the 4th quarter and took out a win with a score of 16 – 13 solidifying their spot in the Grand Final.

The 7 Gold team didn’t want to take any chances last weekend against Loreto and they dominated the play from start to finish. With some solid passing, front drives and our shooters being on point, Redlands were never in doubt of making it through to the Grand Final. They finished their game with a very solid win of 22-14 and will now face Monte in the Grand Final.

The 9 Navy team have played in a very competitive competition all season. They fronted up to a well drilled Sydney Girls High School team who had beaten us twice previously and were determined to make their mark on this competition despite finishing in 3rd place after the round games. They played their best game of their season and dominated the game, winning 35 – 25 and will play MCC in the Grand Final.

The 7 Gold team and the 8 Blue team had a solid training session last weekend in preparation for their Grand Finals this weekend. Good luck to all teams.

A reminder that the Netball Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 13 September at the Norths Leagues Club (6.00pm start). This evening is to celebrate the Netball season for both the ISA and NSNA competitions. Tickets are $55 per person (children under 11 are $25). Students are to wear their full winter school uniform, with parents and guests to wear smart casual. Tickets can be bought here.

Summer Sport

Wednesday summer sports will begin on 12 September. For our basketballers, it will be trials for three weeks to try and nail down correct and accurate teams. Teams from Term 1 are taken into consideration, but it’s also likely and/or possible that new players or new skills have emerged over the winter.

I’d love to see more of our basketballers in Dunnet Hall each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings before school from 7.15-8.00am. It’s a great to start the school day with a workout and sessions are available for players in both the mixed and girls programs. It’s bound to help too, more practice and time with ball in hand will always help to build skills. Our coaches are there and ready.

NSNA Netball

There were some remarkable games at Willoughby last Friday night. It was the business end of the season with elimination finals taking place and Redlands 12 and 14 both narrowly won their way through to Grand Finals this coming Friday. Redlands 14 in particular was a nail biter – tied after the regulation four quarters, teams played extra time and despite going down by a goal early, our girls fought back to tie the score just before extra time ran out. In a performance composed beyond their years, Redlands 14 took the next phase all in their stride – defending desperately and then capitalising on some great team play for Zoe Twining to land a long bomb for the Golden Goal. It was super exciting and this week has plenty of excitement in store also. Grand Finals don’t come around all the time!

Redlands 12 played a great team game and jumped ahead early in the second quarter and maintained a never quite comfortable lead, right through to the end. Their final minutes played out in monsoon-like rain, with crowd, players and umpires all ducking for cover – soaked to the skin as the final hooter blew. Fingers crossed for better weather this Friday, so that our girls can celebrate their wonderful year together and without freezing! Good luck to both teams for the Grand Final and congratulations on their wonderful seasons.

HICES Athletics Reps

Redlands athletes Keira Attard, Daniel Benoleil, Jeffrey Benoleil, Isaac Brooks, Lachlan Carmichael, Oscar Dalmeida, Mischa Fabig, Lara Farrell, Alex Fitzpatrick, Harrison Graetz, Charlotte Hugman, Noah Kharzoo, Lucius Midas, Eva Osborne, Hugo Scott, Lachlan Svensson, Mitchell Travers Wolf and Zoe Waterfield have all qualified to represent HICES at the NSWCIS Athletics Carnival next Thursday. It’s a great Redlands representation at such a high level. Having looked at some of the qualifying times and performances, I think some of our guys and girls have a red hot chance to go one step further and make the CIS team for the NSWPSSA Championships. Our relay teams, Senior and Junior Boys and Senior Girls, will need their best performance but could do really well at State.

Photos

We love photos and showing off your great action shots from sports fixtures on Saturday. If anyone has any pics or takes any in the future, I love to use them to showcase our current teams and past teams on the rolling display in Dunnet Hall. Please send me the pics, or a link or even pop them in on a USB (it will be returned) to the Sports Office or Adrian Carter.

Music

Music Centre Opening – Week of Celebrations

Throughout last week, the school celebrated the opening of the John Roberts Centre, home to the Music Department, with a selection of morning, lunchtime and afternoon concerts in the new performance space named the Edwards Auditorium. Thanks to our many students for their excellent performances and the various staff members who conducted these ensembles in presenting a broad range of performance styles and contexts for our audiences.

The official opening event on Wednesday evening, a collaborative evening shared alongside the Visual Arts Exhibition, represented the rich breadth of artistic talents within our school community. The opening concert featured a number of small ensemble performances alongside speeches from our Principal, Dr Peter Lennox, Chair of the Board, Mrs Glenda McLoughlin and Founding Trustee, Mr John Roberts.

This concert concluded with the Australian Premiere of a commissioned work titled Sonnets to Orpheus, composed by Redlander (2013) Mr Jack Frerer. This creative collaboration grew out of a discussion with Jack back in 2014 while visiting the Juilliard School in New York. The conversation transpired into developing a collaboration with the Redlands Music and English Departments, where Jack and his English Extension teacher, Dr Jane Sloan, searched for a poem that represented the School as an important place for learning; and where from learning, comes new discoveries and new journeys. In reading through various translations, the work that resonated with Jack was the version translated by Dr Anita Burrows and Joanna Macy. In connecting with these educators, Jack’s instinctive observations of the musicality in the translations was correct, as both the teachers were musicians themselves. A recording of this work will be made available to the School community at the end of the year. Below is the text of the poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, 1922 (translation by Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy 2009).

Sonnets to Orpheus
Book 1, Number 21

Spring! And Earth is like a child who has learned many poems by heart. For the trouble of that long learning she wins the prize.
Her teacher was strict.
We loved the white of the old man’s beard. Now we can ask her the many names of green, of blue, and she knows them, she knows them!
Earth, school is out now. You’re free to play with the children. We’ll catch you, joyous Earth. The happiest will catch you!
All that the teacher taught her—the many thoughts pressed now into roots and long tough stems: she sings! She sings!

Senior Campus

Vocal Competition Monday 24 September (Week 9)

Adjudicator: Mrs Jacki Cooper, Jazz and Big Band Singer, Educator

Jacki Cooper has been a regular feature on the Australian jazz scene since 1990 and after travelling much of the world, now resides in Sydney. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Voice from Adelaide University.

While studying for her music degree, Jacki embarked on an even more important form of study, performing with renowned jazz composer, Dave Dallwitz. Through Dave, Jacki also had the opportunity to perform with the likes of Graeme Bell and Ade Monsborough. While working for the renowned Stanford Jazz Workshop at Stanford University in the USA in 1994, Jacki studied with US jazz singers Mark Murphy, Kitty Margolis, Madeline Eastman and Nancy King, and gigged regularly with local musicians. She recorded a radio program on Fog in the City Radio, and was also invited to San Antonio, Texas to sing with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band at the famous Landing Jazz Club on the Riverwalk.

In 2003, Jacki was the featured resident vocalist on the inaugural season for the cruise ship, Oceania Regatta, cruising around Europe, Russia, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean. In 2005, Jacki was invited to perform at Sax’n Art Jazz Club in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam with world-class saxophonist, Tran Manh Tuan. In 2007, Jacki and John Morrison toured China, performing at JZ Jazz Club and the House of Jazz and Blues in Shanghai. The tour highlight was a performance at the Oriental Arts Centre with the Shanghai Symphony Big Band. In March 2010, Jacki was awarded Best Jazz Vocal at the Musicoz Awards.

Jacki is a regular at jazz festivals around the country, including Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Darling Harbour International Jazz Festival, Manly Jazz Festival and Thredbo Jazz Festival. She performs with John Morrison with their quartet, quintet and with John’s big band, “Swing City”.

We are all looking forward to hearing all the student’s wonderful performances and celebrating in their success as Redlands Senior Vocal Competition finalists for 2018.
