Grand Finals
On a cold and otherwise dreary Saturday, across multiple venues, across a wide variety of sports, anyone who went out to support their peers or children got a chance to see why Sport in general is such a crucial part of Redlands and our greater community. From the rain soaked Hockey pitches of Moorebank to the boot torn Rugby fields of Oakhill College, the entire weekend was a celebration of Redlands.
To be on the sidelines as our Hockey Girls celebrated incredible wins against Oakhill and Central Coast Grammar, to see the amazing sense of joy from these athletes as they all fought to the very end, was the start to what was a wonderful weekend. It was a tough 2-1 win against a previously undefeated CCGS side. One of the lasting images was the scene at the last whistle as Redlands Girls from all different age groups came together as a complete squad and celebrated, Year 12 Girls being embraced by the next in line or even younger.
At Olympic Park the Junior A Netball team played an almost perfect game against Chevalier. Our Redlands Girls worked together as a team rather than individuals to put away the opposition. Netball is one of the most brilliant sports for athletic development, teaching spatial awareness, hand eye coordination and communication. It can be seen as a credit to the coaching with the way in which our girls presented these skills, knowing their roles of attack and defence.
We often try and quantify the effect sport has on students, using criteria like numbers to the sport and or wins and losses. Not enough can be said about the emotional and somewhat holistic response that sport can have, especially as it relates to schoolboy and schoolgirl athletes. I was immensely proud in the level of sportsmanship I witnessed across the entire day across all of the sports that Redlands athletes participated in. Gracious in victory, magnanimous in defeat, Redlands were near perfect. It is an incredibly hard task to set, for young students, to win that final game, to have that level of elation and immediately lower it to shake the oppositions hand. We also had to experience the other side of the coin, having that last whistle signal defeat and yet, needing to pick ourselves off the ground to congratulate the other team.
For our Rugby team this was certainly the case as our team were outlasted by Chevalier. Down to the last five minutes, the Redlands 1stXV were still in the match, battered under the weight of Chevalier possession, our team continued to pick themselves up off the ground to go again in defence. When that final whistle blew, bodies dropped to the ground from exhaustion and defeat, there wasn’t a single 1stXV jersey that wasn’t covered in mud. Slowly but surely, the boys picked themselves off the ground to congratulate a Chevalier side which played the game brilliantly.

At Blacktown our Junior A Girls Football showed poise and composure to finish the season as undefeated ISA champions, an historic achievement. Our 1sts Girls Football showed determination and discipline to compete against Oakhill to hold them to a 3-0 score line, the lowest Oakhill has been held to all year. Our 13As Boys team also showed that Redlands Football has a strong future ahead of it with a well drilled and structured performance against St Pius.
I would like to think that anyone who witnessed any of the games across the weekend could see the progress made in Redlands Sport, especially in terms of student support. At the Blacktown International Sports Centre, we saw a line of navy blazers, Senior and Junior boys and girls, tunnelling our 1st XI Girls Football out to the middle. At Willoughby Netball Courts we saw whole teams arrive hours before their own games to support their peers and the teams playing before. The Rugby had a tunnel that stretched out to halfway comprising of parents, students and even our wonderful Junior representatives. The cheers of Redlands echoed all the way through the Olympic Park venue.
I look forward to seeing our Summer sports share in the same passion and enthusiasm.
Athletics
Redlands competed in their first Invitational Athletics Carnival hosted by St Aloysius. The invitational carnival is an excellent opportunity for Redlands athletes to develop their confidence, competing in a competitive yet friendly environment against other independent schools from across NSW. For many of our junior throwers and runners, competing was very valuable as they were able to learn how to start a race correctly, and how to throw a javelin, discus or shot put properly. Some of the highlights on the day included Thomas Graetz (Yr 7) jumping 1:43 in the 13 years High Jump, Jonah Koppers (Yr 9) running a 6 second PB in the 800m in a fast time of 2:10 to finish in 3rd place in the Championship U/15s 800m, Lachlan Binnekamp, winning his heat of the 13 years 400m in a pb of 103.6, LuLu Simpson (Yr 10) finishing in first place in the 200m in a time of 28.8, Beau Davies (Yr 9) running his first 200m ever in a decent time of 28.13 and Monique Pascoe (Yr 10) throwing 9.30m in the 16 years Shot put.

Next weekend will be a big weekend of Athletics for Redlands with the Nitro Series event on Friday night and the 2nd invitational carnival at ES Marks Athletics track on Saturday.
Congratulations to Zach Johnson who competed in the Pub 2 Pub (Dee Why to Newport) 6k over the weekend and finished in first place in 25.42.

Football
After a great weekend of Semi Finals we had three teams qualify for the Grand Final.
The Junior Boys 13As were confident they could match Oakhill and come away with a win vs Pius but had to play solidly the whole game. There was not much in it, with either side competing at every moment. At the end, two free kicks outside the box, over our wall and above our GK made the difference in the first half 1-0 and another one in the second half made it 2-0. There were no goals created by general play but they all count in the end. Redlands tried very hard but at the end St Pius had a little more in the tank and maintained their intensity until the end and deserved to get a win. Congratulations to our boys. It has been a very good season playing in ISA Division 1 and progressing through to the Grand Final in their first year in Secondary School, which shows promise for the future of Football at Redlands.
The Grand Final for the Junior A Girls had the ingredients for a cracking game between the teams which finished 1st and 2nd during the normal competition. The game started with Central Coast creating one or two chances but the Redlands defence did very well to stop them from scoring. Our girls responded and a few minutes later moved forward and hit a shot straight into the roof of the net making 1-0. Our girls kept playing well passing and switching play as well as stopping everything that Central Coast threw at them. Midway through the second half, the girls again did some combination play in the middle of the park to score another goal to make it 2-0 at half time. The Girls followed instructions from the coach at half time and kept possession for a majority of the game, finishing with a final score of 2-0. A fantastic season for our Junior Girls who finished Minor Premiers and were undefeated all year. Congratulations girls!
The First XI girls this year had a few things to work out and we believed that we were good enough to make semis and win the ISA Grand Final . After a great semi to beat Barker 1-0 the team was ready for what would be a tough assignment against the Minor Premiers Oakhill College. This was the third time Redlands First XI girls made the Grand Final since the inception of ISA Girls Football.
The game started very well for us and our preparation paid off. During the week the girls trained well and knew that stopping and dealing with the long balls from the Oakhill defenders to their strong fast forwards was going to be our key to stay in the game. With 5 minutes to go before half time Oakhill received a free kick and a bomb went above our defence and goal keep straight in the net at 1-0 down half time. Two brilliant moments by Oakhill players in the second half and put us 3-0 at the final whistle. Redlands girls kept playing till the very end and gave everything they could . Congratulations the Girls and to Coach Pablo. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Year 12 girls for their commitment to Football for the last 6 years at Redlands, Hannah Johns, Emma Woodward and Claudia Wilson and we wish them well for their futures
Thank you all for your support to Redlands Football

Hockey
What a weekend! A huge congratulation to the girls and coaches of the 1sts and 2nds teams who won their respective Grand Finals. I would also like to thank the Yr 7 and 8 girls from the Girls 3rds team who travelled out to Moorebank to cheer on the teams playing. Your efforts were not unnoticed.
1sts are Grand Final Winners! In a hard-fought game against Central Coast Grammar School, the girl’s skill and determination really shone through. Two early goals from Sophie and Elise gave us a lead that CCGS could never catch. Through terrible weather and a challenging opponent, the girls came out on top. The work ethic, skill and teamwork of the team was outstanding and we are proud of how far they have come as a team and individuals this season. Congratulations to both the Senior 1st and 2nd teams for the Grand Final wins! See main photo.
2nds are Grand Final Winners! The game was hard fought with Oakhill having numerous subs against our two subs. However, the girls prevailed and were able to hold off Oakhill with a 2-1 win. It was a fantastic end to the season with the all the girls showing off their fight, resilience, and their skills. Well done to the girls and thank you parents for all the help that was vital to the success this season. It was a picture-perfect ending to the season with the premiership back in Redlands hands.

Please celebrate the end of the Hockey season at Cammeray Golf Course with us on Thursday 13 September. There will be a buffet meal plus awards for the Hockey program. The doors will be open from 5.30pm with formalities running from 6.00 to 7.30pm. To book tickets, please click here.
Netball
Saturday saw the end of the ISA Netball Competition. I am pleased to announce that Redlands has won the ISA Netball School Championship Shield for 2018, this is a fantastic achievement and all teams, coaches and parents should be extremely proud.
Our Inter A team took on a strong CCGS team, who had finished in top position for the 2018 season. It was going to be a tough game and from the outset CCGS looked to dominate possession. They jumped out to a strong first quarter lead, Redlands looked to peg back the difference in the 2nd quarter and managed to keep goal for goal. CCGS kicked out to a fast start in the 3rd and didn’t look back. Unfortunately our girls went down 31-48, but the girls should be extremely proud of their efforts this season.
Our Junior A team were up against Chevalier. The girls knew this Grand Final was going to be a tough match, and tough it was. The opening quarters saw each team go end to end goal for goal, with Chev leading by 1 at the first quarter and Redlands leading by 1 at half time. The Junior A girls looked to dominate the 3rd quarter and were able to capitalise on some Chev mistakes and remain calm when bringing the ball into their attacking third. Redlands kicked out to an 8 goal lead at the end of the 3rd quarter, and from there they just built the pressure, running away with the match in the 4th quarter to win 41-27.
Our Junior B team had a tough assignment on their hands against Chevalier, who from the outset wanted to cause an upset. Both teams were going goal for goal and end to end, which led for some exciting play in the first half. Chevalier jumped out to a 3 goal lead, but Redlands quickly reeled that in and to start the 4th quarter, had jumped to a small lead of their own. Chevalier narrowed the margin back to 1 in the 4th quarter. The Redlands girls looked to control possession and remained calm, this however wasn’t to be with Chev taking the game 41-45. The Junior B girls have had a remarkable season this year, growing and developing as a team throughout the season, they should all be very proud!
On Saturday we have five of our NSNA teams in Semi Finals. NSNA 9 Navy were in a tough elimination final against NSGHS 17. They were looking to capitalise on the strong performances in the back half of the season, which they did, taking the match 36-33 finishing the season in 3rd place moving them into next week’s Preliminary final. NSNA 8 Blue have had a great season finishing on top of the table. They had a very tough match against NSGHS 24 but the girls pulled out a gutsy win taking the match 17-16 which allowed them to move straight in the Grand Final. Our NSNA 7 Navy team had a tough game on their hands. MCC 16 finished on top of the table the and the girls were keen to upset the minor premiers with some patient netball. The final quarter was very exciting to watch, going goal for goal, the girls were looking to capitalise on the pressure they had built throughout the early stages of the match, and that they did, taking the match 18-16, earning them the week off! NSNA 7 Gold had a tough assignment coming up against Monte 51. The girls worked hard and looked to build on the skills they have developed, unfortunately they went down 4-19, but they have a 2nd chance this weekend to still make it through to the Grand Final. Our NSNA 7 Blue team showed huge improvement in last week’s Semi Final coming up against Monte 45 (who last week beat them 4-47), however lost this Semi Final 11-23. They showed great composure when working the ball down the court and now take on a strong Loreto team this weekend in order to make the Grand Final.
The Netball Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 13 September at the Norths Leagues Club (6.00pm start). This evening is to celebrate the Netball season for both the ISA and NSNA competitions. Tickets are $55 per person (children under 11 are $25). Students are to wear their full Winter school uniform, with parents and guests to wear smart casual. Tickets can be bought here.
Rugby
On Saturday the Redlands 1st XV travelled to Oakhill College to compete in the Grand Final against the Chevalier 1st XV. There was some nervous tension in and around the Redlands team as they warmed up as Chevalier had beaten them convincingly in the regular season, and all week we had talked as a squad about the need to be accountable and aim up as an entire group. The team walked through an incredible tunnel made up of Secondary and Junior Students and also an amazing collection of staff and parents. The first half could be summed up in one word. Brutal. Both teams were driving into each other on defence with each team refusing to give away cheap metres. Our backs were executing our game plan perfectly with subtle kicks behind the defence heaping the pressure on the opposition. Chevalier scored first, with quick hands they were able to get outside of our defence, scoring a try in the corner. Redlands immediately answered back, pouring pressure on a tiring opposition, quick hands from our backs and some lovely structure from our forwards meant a well worked try. Scores tied at 5-5. Redlands fought hard but there was possession against us and eventually our line was cracked by a strong run by the Chevalier lock. 12-5 to Chevalier.
Immediately after half time we started to build, gaining metres through well placed kicks. Redlands looked set to score but a well-timed tackle from Chev forced the ball loose and their fullback streaked away with nothing in front of him except the try line. As has been the standard for the whole season Redlands wouldn’t let in an easy try and the fullback was dragged down short of the line. Chev was then firmly set in our half, hammering our line with one out forward carries. A 50/50 penalty went against us and the Chevalier Captain opted for the kick at goals, his forwards exhausted from their efforts. Chevalier 15-5. Redlands needed to lift and needed something to spark a line break. A quick kick into space, a mistake by their fullback and we were in for a try. Chevalier 15-10.
Redlands were exhausted, defending just off instinct and heart as Chevalier continued to smash our line. The opposition did not make mistakes, they kept the ball and waited for the line breaks. Eventually our line was cracked and Redlands could not get possession away from the opposition, instead putting their bodies on the line time and time again in defence. The weight of possession was too much and Chevalier closed the match out with a try under the posts by their hooker. Final score 27-10 Chevalier.
Redlands were so much closer than the score line suggested. The efforts of the entire squad cannot be faulted, there were players who needed to be helped off the field after the match, absolutely drained by their efforts in defence. This loss does not take away from the significance of this season. To be in the 1st XV Grand Final in our first year back in Division 2 is a testament to the efforts of this wonderful squad and something to be cherished and carried into the 2019 season. To see the crowd and to hear the support from the side lines, the cheers of ‘Redlands’ throughout the match just goes to show how far we have come.
Swimming
Congratulations to Olivia Donoghue (Yr 9) who competed in the 2018 Club Swimming State Championships over the weekend. Olivia swam in the 100m and 50m Freestyle, just missing out on PBs in both events. Liv is now looking to qualify for Nationals!
