Issue 25 2023 Term 3 Week 6 - 24 Aug 2023

From the Principal

This week I have greatly enjoyed celebrating Book Week with our Junior Campus students. Some highlights were joining in book related learning activities, reading stories to Prep School classes and, of course, joining in the Book Week Dress Up on Tuesday. Even though many students mistook me as Dumbledore from Harry Potter, I was impressed with how many did know of Gandalf from The Hobbit!

As many of you are aware, I am an English teacher and both of my parents were English teachers, as well. So, it is not surprising, that I have a personal passion for reading, literature and the imagination. While I love all of the festivities of Book Week, what is most important to me is the reminder for our students of the power of books and the importance of reading.

As I shared to Junior School students at their assembly, the reason that Gandalf is my favourite book character is the book, The Hobbit, was the first book that I ever truly “got lost in”. I read The Hobbit in the summer between 5th and 6th grades, and I still vividly remember one rainy day that instead of heading out to play with my friends, I spent the whole day on my front porch voraciously reading The Hobbit. I was transported to Middle Earth and a land of wizards and hobbits; orcs and elves. I didn’t want the story to end and when I turned the last page, I remained on my front porch for a little while longer to stay lost in the story and in my imagination.

Sixteen years ago I heard acclaimed Scottish writer Andrew O’Hagan give the opening address at the Sydney Writers’ Festival, and I believe his words still effectively capture the power of literature.

“Literature is not something you do in your spare time, but the beat of time itself, and we will feel that pulse in every major area we turn to…. This is what we do if we are truly alive. This is what we do if we live close to our imaginations. And how do we do that, how do we keep company with our imaginations, what do we do to be so alive? It’s easy – we read books.”

Happy Book Week.

Community Update

“Cultural education is the main vessel for change … we all have to walk the same path.”

Marcus Mungul Lacey – Culture College Director and Senior Yolŋu Educator

Further to the introduction in the Principal’s Section of Note Day, we are delighted to announce an exclusive opportunity for Redlands Parents and Carers to visit Arnhem Land in 2024.

With the introduction of our Yr 9 Experiential Program in 2025 and our Midawarr Program (through Culture College) moving to Yr 10 from 2025, an exclusive opportunity presents for our parent and carer community to experience this unique and extraordinary program through a Redlands Parent and Carer Midawarr Arnhem Land Trip in May 2024.

At Redlands, we are proud of our partnership with Culture College Aboriginal Corporation. This unique program provides privileged access and interaction with the Yolŋu people and their lands of which they have been the traditional owners for over 70,000 years.

Our partnership with Culture College inspires and educates through the sharing of unique experiences and the celebration of traditional Yolŋu knowledge systems and customs, all shared in an authentic Yolŋu setting in northeast Arnhem Land. First Nations educators from along the East Coast also teach the diversity of their cultures and customs alongside Yolŋu, threading the stories together.

Your participation in this trip will directly contribute to the advancement of our job pathways program, which empowers young Yolŋu individuals through mentorship provided by esteemed senior Yolŋu leaders in the field of cultural education. Furthermore, this experience presents an occasion for the Redlands community to unite and engage in meaningful dialogues and collaborative roundtable discussions with Yolŋu educators.

This is quite literally a once in a lifetime opportunity to deeply explore miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma Festival. The trip is planned for Sunday 26 to Thursday 30 May 2024 and includes:

  • Camping accommodation, tents with single camp stretcher (1 or 2 per tent)
  • Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Morning and afternoon tea breaks (light snacks)
  • Airport transfers to and from Gove airport and Gulkula
  • Transport in Nhulunbuy and surrounding areas
  • ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony
  • Visit to Buku – Yirrkala Arts Centre and Museum
  • Sharing of knowledge with local Yolŋu educators
  • Proceeds will contribute to a job pathways program to help provide training, further education and job opportunities to Yolŋu educators within the program
  • Round-trip economy airfare from Sydney to Cairns return on Virgin Australia scheduled
  • Round-trip economy airfare from Cairns to Gove return on Air North

Gather a group of friends, a friend or join the wider group for this once in a lifetime experience not to be missed.

We will be hosting an information evening on Thursday 14 September to provide more detailed information on this truly amazing experience offered exclusively to the Redlands community. To reserve a place at our information evening click here.

Due to the unique and exclusive nature of this opportunity, we expect there to be considerable interest from our community. Bookings can be made following our information evening, with initial deposits required before 22 September.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Inspirational Video

We are delighted to share a message from Jeff Brown, School Captain of the Class of 2016 acknowledging the continuity of this tradition and sending a message to our Year 12 students:

“As an old leaf on the Redlands tree now, I wanted to pass on my warmest wishes to everyone as yet another exam season nears. Imagine yourselves, 75% across the flowing river, now perched on an unusually large lily pad with your whole cohort, staring at the river bank on the other side marking the finish line of Year 12. You have come so far, with only a few more stones to traverse until you hop off to your next stage in life.

At this point in time, it is natural to be overwhelmed. There is no textbook methodology to approach the last dash. Yet the key is to make sure you take an approach you will not regret in hindsight. When you arrive in December 2023, the greatest feeling will be knowing you gave it your best regardless of the outcome. I know this is a cliché, yet it is an important consensus takeaway from the many year groups which have completed the journey – just as you will all do very soon.

Finally, before you take that next step closer to the river bank, remember all your fellow Year 12s also standing on the lily pad. Grab their hand – keep passing on tips and progress together so you can all cross to the other side together.

On a final note, the generosity and courage from everyone to help continue the Legacy Gift has been so heart-warming to see. I continue to hear wonderful updates of all the energy and care placed into continuing the ongoing contribution to the future of the School. It is so lovely to witness and something everyone should be so proud of, for a very long time.

Best, Jeff.”

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Our walk next week on Wed 30 Aug is around Hunters Hill. Meet at Woolwich Pier Hotel, 2 Gale St at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Keiko on 0414 994 012.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our next book for this term is Babel by R.F. Kuang. The date for the meeting is to be confirmed. New book suggestions for next term are welcome!

Congratulations to Daniel Koppers (Yr 10) who was awarded 2nd place in the Y10-12 poetry section of the Mosman Youth Literary Awards last night for his poem Hiroshima. As Daniel is currently at Winter School, his mother accepted his award on his behalf.

Collaboration and Voice

The Student Representative Council (SRC), who meet every second Thursday at lunch, discuss weighty student issues and respond on behalf of the students to potential changes or updates in the Secondary School. Recently they composed some guidelines for the Ping Pong Table, have provided thoughtful and detailed feedback to the Executive on the following areas of the Senior Campus:

  • Amenities
  • New uniform
  • Student ID cards
  • The canteen’s breakfast and afternoon tea menu
  • Ideas for the 2024 Study Hub

Please see below their considered and inclusive Ping Pong Table Schedule and Shared Rules.

The Voice to Parliament

Recently North Sydney Mayor Zoe Baker invited Redlands to attend a local Voice to Parliament evening designed to give members of the community the opportunity to listen, ask and understand the various issues related to the upcoming referendum.

I had the pleasure of attending with four Yr 11 students: Sabine Murray, Emma Noes, Charlie Parker and Thomas Sigaloff. In the above image you can see us talking with the Mayor and authors of The Voice to Parliament Handbook Kerry O’Brien and Thomas Mayo. The Independent Theatre in North Sydney was well attended and the Redlands students, along with some other students from local schools, were most definitely the youngest in the audience. Thomas Mayo and Kerry O’Brien were excellent speakers who shared the history of indigenous representative bodies, constitutional change and referendums in Australia before clarifying the referendum question and constitutional amendment for the audience.

On referendum day, voters will be asked to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on a single question. The question on the ballot paper will be: “A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

Do you approve this proposed alteration?”

In the latter half of the evening Kerry and Thomas responded to questions from the audience. These questions were about:

  • How the Voice to Parliament will work practically speaking
  • How to sum up the key points of the Yes vote for family and friends
  • The impact of media reporting on the campaign
  • The myths about ‘veto’
  • How to respond to anger, hate and ignorance

Thomas Mayo’s calm, supportive and inclusive responses to even the most challenging questions were what stood out to me and the students. When faced with vitriol and even personal attacks, he demonstrated compassion and respect for others’ views. Kerry O’Brien finished the evening in true journalistic style with a message to challenge the No Vote’s mantra ‘If you don’t know, vote No’ by reminding us of our responsibility to be truth seekers, saying ‘If you don’t know, find out!’. For the young learners who accompanied me on the evening, his reminder to value knowledge and ask critical questions of media and social media, really resonated.

HSC Students

Yr 11 HSC students met with Mrs Benjamin last week to hear some vital exam information and to learn more about their Yr 12 subject electives. Students were told of the importance of being on time to exams, the full school uniform requirement (no sport kit, even on a Thursday) key equipment information (including what they cannot bring in with them) and what to do if you are sick or cannot attend an exam. Students were also informed of the process for deciding upon Year 12 subjects and what is on offer to pick up in Term 4. The slides can be viewed on the HSC Assessment Information Pulse page, under General Information here.

Students have been sent the slides through their HSC Core page on iLearn; if your child missed the meeting, they should ensure they have read through the presentation and arrange to speak with Mrs Benjamin if they have any questions.

IB Students

Year 11 IB students met with Mr Taylor last week during CORE to run through all examination expectations. Students were told of the importance of being on time to examinations, the full school uniform requirement (no sport kit, even on a Thursday) key equipment information (including what they cannot bring in with them) and what to do if you are sick or cannot attend an examination.

If students have any further questions, they should reach out to Mr Taylor directly.

Examination Block Sport and Extra-Curricular Commitments

Throughout the next two weeks, students will still have Sport practice and/or trials as well as some extra-curricular commitments. As the Yr 11 Examination Block is the first priority for students over these next two weeks, for any Sport or Extra-Curricular commitment that may impact an examination time, the student should reach out to their coach or supervising teacher directly to communicate the conflict and be excused from this commitment. Students have been encouraged to check through their commitments and plan ahead to make these next two weeks as smooth as possible.

Counselling Space iLearn Page

The Counselling Space iLearn Page is a fantastic resource for both students and parents. Our counselling team has included support for parents, students, study tips, focus and self-calming strategies during high stress periods.

For any students who are finding it challenging to manage their feelings of anxiousness or stress as they prepare for examinations, please share the guidance below. These strategies can be incorporated in less than one minute to self-regulate when feeling anxious before/during examinations and they can help re-focus when feeling overwhelmed or not knowing where to start.

10 Ways to Manage Stress

Listen to some chill music

Pleasing music has been shown to lower cortisol production – a stress hormone.

Open up and express how you feel

Don’t bottle things up! Talk to someone you trust or write it down

Get more sleep

Everything feels worse when you’re tired.

“A challenge, not an obstacle”

Try thinking of your stressor this way. Research shows that mindset matters.

Move your body

Get some exercise, it releases endorphins to help you feel good.

Declutter

Is your room messy?  Start tidying one corner of your room.

Check your diet

Are you having too much sugar?  Or coffee?

Learn how to say “no”

Take it easy with the people pleasing and taking too much on.

Cull the drainers

Say bye to people who repeatedly influence you negatively.

Deep breaths in and out of the nose.

This activates the relaxation response.

During Exams, 1-Minute Body Re-set

Stress creates tension in the body. Try this mindfulness exercise out to release it. Take your time. You can do this with your eyes closed once you know each step. Firstly, sit up straight on your chair and let go of anything that you’re holding onto.

1. Take 3 deep breaths – this turns on the relaxation response.

2. Soften your gaze and loosen your jaw.

3. Let your shoulders drop.

4. Take your left ear to your left shoulder and feel the stretch – count to 5.

5. Take your right ear to your right shoulder and feel the neck loosening – count to 5.

6. Fold your arms and close yourself into a ball, taking the chin to chest.

7. Open your arms out wide, pull your shoulders back and lift your chin slightly.

8. Repeat 6 & 7.

9. Take 3 deep breaths with the eyes closed.

Try this at your desk when you’re feeling tense or stuck in your head – it will help bring you back into your body. This can be done as many times as you need during the day.

Wear It Purple Day

Tomorrow, Redlands will have a splash of PURPLE to support Wear It Purple Day! Students can donate to the cause and pick up a ribbon at the gate. For more information, see the link.

An opportunity for self-expression and creativity, Yr 10 have excelled in Visual Arts. This week highlights students work with the Art Exhibition, and their extraordinary talents.

Congratulations to all students who have worked tirelessly on their pieces of work.

Furthermore, we congratulate Iona Gait for being awarded Artist of the Week.

PDHPE – SEPEP

This term in PDHPE, students are engaging with the SEPEP, Sports Education in Physical Education Program. This initiative revolves around an approach that prioritises students within the realm of physical education. In this method, teachers take a step back, enabling students to take responsibility and assume the roles and duties of instructing a modified game to their peers. This chance has granted Yr 10 students the opportunity to acquire essential proficiencies such as teamwork, accountability, leadership, organisation, cooperation, critical thinking, and effective communication abilities. Important positions assigned to students within their groups include Coach, Umpire/Referee, Statistician/Scorer and Publicity Manager. Leading up to their presentations, students have meticulously devised and rigorously tested their coaching sessions, all set to guide an exciting tournament.

The following photos are from the modified game created by Hugh, Thea, Mia and Alicia:

Year 9

The middle of term is upon us, and it has been a busy week for Yr 9. Students have been preparing for assessments in Mathematics and Science and with a number of other assessment tasks on the horizon it is a good opportunity for everyone to reflect on their planning and organisational skills.

During Tutor period on Monday there was success for the Dumolo House Debating team who won their respective battle and then on Wednesday we spend time learning about Wear It Purple Day, an annual LGBTIQA+ awareness day especially for young people, based in Australia. Supporters wear purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTIQA+ community and tomorrow, students can donate to the cause and pick up a ribbon at the gate during Wear It Purple Day.

House Debating

During Tutor on Wednesday, Yr 8 representatives of the Dumolo and Roseby house debated the topic ‘That the NSW government’s initiative to ban mobile phones in NSW schools from Term 4 2023 will not be effective in improving students’ learning and social development.’

This is a fantastic topic given the current landscape and debate occurring with regards to technology in the classroom. Both teams presented compelling arguments about self-management, the difficulties in controlling all associated technologies and if these measures are preparing students for the workplace.

Our Year 11 Adjudicator, spoke very highly of the quality of both sides, however, ultimately awarded the debate to the Dumolo team who argued for the ineffectiveness of the ban.

Geography Excursion

Next week, on Thursday 31 August, Year 8 will be embarking on a Geography field trip, in line with their current unit Water in the World. The focus of the excursion will be about understanding the water management strategies used in our local area and how to undertake effective geographic fieldwork.

Year 8 students will travel from Redlands to either Manly Dam or Bantry Bay at 8:20am and return for normal sport at 2:20pm. Key information has been distributed in Geography classes and students are encouraged to seek the advice of their teacher if anything is unclear about the plan for the day.

Toothpaste and Kindness in Chapel

Well, they say that brushing your teeth is like a dance party for your mouth – so, we know why toothpaste is important in the bathroom. But did you know that toothpaste can also be a great teacher of morals and values?

This week in our fortnightly Chapel service, the focus was on the power of our words and the impacts they can have on others. Our Chaplain, Ms Kirsten Philip and visiting guest speaker spoke about each of us possessing a sword in our mouths and a first aid kit. We each have a choice in which we use. We have the capacity to cause great pain when we say mean or unkind things to others, but we also possess the wonderful power to evoke care and joy through the thoughtful and kind things we might say to others.

So, why toothpaste?

Our guest speaker called up two Yr 7 students to the front of the chapel, Lily and Fergus, and challenged them both to be the fastest to squeeze all the toothpaste out of a full Colgate tube. Fergus managed it in 6 seconds, with Lily ever so slightly behind him. Easy enough. However, when Lily and Fergus were then challenged to get all the toothpaste back into the Colgate tubes, it was a bit of a different story. Fergus, wisely, did not even try, recognising that it was a Herculean trial that he could not surmount. Lily, challenging her inner Sisyphus, gave it a shot, but just ended up with her hands covered in toothpaste!

And the lesson? Once you have said something mean, cruel or thoughtless – and let it out into the world – it is impossible to put it back into your mouth. It is out. And out of your control. So, Yr 7 were encouraged to be careful and consider what they say. The message was to make sure their words are kind and uplifting (not down-putting!). Thank you, Lily and Fergus, for making the message so clear.

Yr 12 Buddies Visit Dumolo

On Friday of last week, we were again visited by our Yr 12 buddy team. This round, their time was spent with Dumolo. Our Yr 12 students engaged Dumolo in reflection on what it means to get involved in service initiatives and why offering service to others is valuable. They also shared stories about their own service involvement at Redlands to inspire Yr 7 to get involved where they can.

Having just progressed through their Trial Examinations, Yr 12 were also perfectly poised to explore assessment and examination feedback with Yr 7, sharing with them the importance of processing teacher feedback to allow for valuable growth in the future. An important point made by Yr 12 was that a mark does not define you. Rather, the ability to take on board feedback, process it and act on it for the future is character defining. Our Yr 12s shared their own recent Trial Examination feedback experiences and encouraged Yr 7 to share stories of how they have used feedback effectively this year. Encouraging students to express themselves and share their voice is a key part of our Yr 12 buddies’ approach, and it is pleasing to see Yr 7 engaging positively in this space.

The session also provided a timely reminder to Yr 7 that their end of year examinations are coming up in Week 3 of Term 4, and they need to start preparing for these.

Study Skills in Tutor Time

In light of examinations coming up for Yr 7 early next term (beginning in Week 3), our Tutor sessions have started focusing on developing specific study habits and skills. While Week 3 of Term 4 might seem like a lengthy time away, we know how quickly these examinations can sneak up on students, and so it is important that they are consolidating their notes and beginning the study process early, so they are best positioned for success.

This week we focused on clarifying some important frequently asked questions, whilst also discussing what elements are valuable in a study and home learning environment. Some of the questions and answers we explored were:

  • Is it okay to eat while studying? Yes, as long as the snacks are healthy and within reach. We do not want students constantly leaving their work areas for snacks!
  • Is it okay to listen to music while studying? Sometimes, but it needs to be the right music. Typically, classical music with a slower tempo is best. However, music can be a distraction too, so any tasks requiring deep thought and concentration are probably best to be done without it.
  • Is it okay to study or complete home learning while watching television? No, it is a clear source of distraction and will make completing work much longer, while also making it harder to remember material. While simple work could be done in front of the TV, anything requiring concentration (which relates to most work) is best to be done without it.
  • Is it okay to have social media open while working? No, no, no. This is a clear source of distraction and definitely a way to lose valuable study and home learning time, while also making it hard to retain any key information as the mind is too busy focused on the device!
  • Is it okay to have my computer or laptop in my room? Yes, as long as you are disciplined in its use and can exert self-control. If you cannot resist playing games or accessing social media, then keep the device out of your room and somewhere public, where its use can be monitored.

We identified many elements that are important for creating a successful home learning and study environment, suggesting that the following are particularly important and that students should try to ensure their workspaces at home contain all these elements:

  • Quiet and private space
  • Distraction free
  • Fresh air and ventilation
  • Good lighting
  • A supportive chair
  • A clear workspace

As the term continues, we will explore specific study techniques and explore with students how to create and stick to a valuable study routine.

Exploring Ancient Artefacts and Cultures at Chau Chak Wing Museum:

This week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, Yr 7 explored the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney. They enjoyed the rare chance to handle ancient artefacts and acquire knowledge about ancient cultures and civilizations. Particularly, they dedicated time to the Mummy Room, where the coffins and mummies of four individuals from Egypt (dating between 1200 BC and 100 AD) – Meruah, Padiashaikhet, Horus, and Mer-Neith-it-es – are housed. By utilising CT technology, valuable insights into their day-to-day lives, encompassing aspects like nutrition and health, were uncovered. Additionally, the intricately designed LEGO model of Pompeii stood out as an attraction, offering a visual journey through three distinct periods: the city’s existence, the unfolding of archaeological discoveries, and its incorporation into pop culture. This immersive encounter brought them closer to the material remnants that aid in understanding civilizations of the past.

House Debating

Today Yr 7 commenced the House Debating competition with a tight battle of Dumolo versus Roseby. The topic was ‘That community service should be compulsory in schools.’ Roseby were the Affirmative while Dumolo were the Negative, and the debaters were all supported by their Tutor Group peers in the Edwards Auditorium, as they battled back and forth. The Affirmative offered powerful arguments as to the important social awareness and life-learning opportunities such compulsory service would raise, while the Negative countered with arguments as to the cynicism and disdain that might be produced if such service was made compulsory rather than kept voluntary.

It was a close debate, but our Yr 11 adjudicators ultimately decided in favour of the Affirmative! Well done team Roseby! And what a relief, given that Year 7 will soon start some compulsory service in the School, it is good to know that compulsory service is the right choice!

Book Week

Literature has taken centre stage across schools in Australia this week during Children’s Book Week and we have enjoyed bringing the joys of reading to the forefront of minds here at Redlands. In assembly this week, our Principal, Mr Corcoran shared the story of the first time he got ‘lost’ in a book, The Hobbit, and how that moment was one he remembers vividly and later influenced his decision to become an English teacher.

I am grateful to our Library team for driving this week’s activities and I have enjoyed being part of the author visits for our students; Louise Park for Yrs 3 & 4 and Reece Carter for Yrs 5 &6. I particularly enjoyed the way in which Reece involved the students in creating their own writing, with a practical writing workshop intertwined with some of his own journey as a writer.

For interested families, both authors have shared links to their books should students be keen to purchase any of their novels.

Reece Carter

Also in our assembly this week, our Library leaders presented this 2023 Children’s Book Council of Australia ‘Book of the Year’ awards and how our students had also voted. These books are in our own Arnold Library and I know are popular choices for our students.

We were also proud to celebrate 361 Junior School students (80%) completing this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge including a 100% completion rate from Yr 3.

And finally, thank you to students and staff for embracing the opportunity to come dressed as a favourite book character or aligned to this year’s theme of Read, Grow, Inspire. We loved seeing the creations and vibrancy of colour on the day including our assembly!

Junior Music Festival Video

We are thrilled to share the professional video recording of the 2023 Junior Music Festival, A Night With The Stars. As you will see, the quality of performance was outstanding, and it is a joy to see our students enjoy performing to their loved ones.

Junior Piano Competition

On Monday afternoon, I was enthralled by the quality of musicianship on display at this year’s Junior Piano Competition.

In the wonderfully fitting Edwards Auditorium on the Senior Campus, our talented pianists delighted the captivated audience with their skill and guile.

Well done to all of the students involved; it was an absolute highlight of my week.

Dr Pirotta’s Visit to Prep

The Prep School ended STEAM week last Friday by welcoming wildlife scientist and science communicator, Dr Vanessa Pirotta to speak to our students and families. Dr Pirotta’s zoological background has taken her around the world for wildlife research. Notable projects Vanessa has worked on include leading pioneering research in collaboration with industry experts to develop custom-built, waterproof drones to collect whale snot (lung bacteria) for an assessment of whale health. Vanessa is also a primary investigator on a major wildlife trafficking detection project with Rapiscan Systems, the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment and Taronga Zoo. Vanessa is also working collaboratively with the local First Nations rangers, the Gamay Rangers, in Sydney to document marine mammal presence.

Our Prep students were engaged and fascinated as Dr Pirotta’s shared stories about whales, the noises they make to communicate, and they especially loved her stories of visiting Antarctica.

We were privileged to have her sign a copy of her new book, The Voyage of Whale and Calf, which follows the migration of a young calf and his mother from the east coast of Australia to the icy waters of Antarctica. If you would like to read the book, please ask Mrs Stokes and she will help you borrow it.

After hearing from Dr Pirotta, a few of our students asked questions on behalf of the cohort. Dr Pirotta was very impressed with the depth of questions asked and the engagement of all the students.

If you would like to know more about Dr Pirotta’s work, please click here.

Book Week in the Prep School

All week we have truly lived the 2023 Book Week theme as we have read, grown, and been inspired by all things books! The enthusiasm of Mrs Bertinshaw and Mrs Stokes has been contagious across Prep. The Lucy Hill Library has been a busy place of activity with lunchtime clubs, guessing competitions, book cover jigsaws and many more book related fun.

Our Kindergarten and Year 1 students were treated to stories being read to them by Mr Corcoran and Ms Partington. A book week is not complete without dressing up as a character from a favourite book. On Tuesday our students and staff looked amazing as we welcomed everything from unicorns, Dog Man, Harry Potter to giraffes and paper bag princesses to school. A big shout out to all our families and carers who helped create such fun costumes for our young learners.

Next week we will be welcoming our visiting Australian author Jane Godwin to the Prep school to talk about her many books and what it is like to be an author.

Superstar Prep Staff

It was wonderful to have two of our Prep School teachers take part in the ABC Education Story Time initiative, recording their videos at the studio a few months ago. With the recent launch of the Story Time performances as part of Book Week, our Prep teachers Ms Singh and Mr Price showed their outstanding performances to their classes on Tuesday.

You can view Ms Singh and Mr Price’s presenting their teaching and learning activity to students all around Australia here.

A Flight Plan For Growing Resilience

We were thrilled to welcome so many K-6 parents and carers on Wednesday to hear our Junior Campus Counsellors speak about guiding our students through turbulent times by building resilience. Alessandro, Leah and Will shared how resilience can be learned by adopting strategies and language that can expand a child’s window of tolerance and learn how to confront conflict and problem solving using simple and consistent language that helps them identify, define and scale problems. Assertive communication using positive self-talk and ensuring we as adults are trying our hardest to be positive role models to learn from was certainly a takeaway message for me as an educator and as a parent.

If you would like to view the slides, you can find them on the Prep Pulse page.

Book Week

We are all very much enjoying Book Week this week. Students are invited to dress as their favourite book character on Friday 25 August. Read, Grow, Inspire is the theme for 2023, and the featured artist is Australian illustrator Matt Ottley whose book Luke’s Way of Looking was a CBCA Honor Book in 2000. We encourage the children to dress as a book character and ask that children do not dress as superheroes please.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

We will celebrate this special day on Friday 25 August. As it is also Book Week we will have a special parade. At 10am, we invite our grandparents and special friends to join us on the basketball courts adjacent to Redlands House, where we will have a parade of all of the costumes, followed by morning tea in the Redlands House playground concluding at 11am. Please join us.

Secondary Sport

As we transition into the Summer Sport season with a number of exams and assessment blocks coming up, particularly for the Yr 11 & 12 students, it is a timely reminder that engaging in regular physical activity during exams can provide a multitude of benefits for students’ mental and physical well-being. While the demands of studying might tempt one to lead a sedentary lifestyle, incorporating exercise into the routine can greatly enhance academic performance and overall health. Physical activity has been shown to boost cognitive function. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, delivering oxygen and nutrients that enhance concentration, memory and problem solving. Short breaks for physical movements during study sessions can rejuvenate the mind and prevent mental fatigue. Exercise is also a powerful stress-reliever. The stress and anxiety often associated with exam and assessment periods can be effectively managed through physical activity, the endorphins released during activity are natural mood lifters and help in reducing cortisol (the stress hormone) leading to mental clarity, reduction in anxiety and a better emotional state.

With that in mind, sport trials will continue over the exam period for Year 11. This will allow students who wish to use this time as a study break to do so and we encourage all the Year 11s to participate in regular physical activity over the coming weeks (unless there is a direct clash with an exam).

Summer Sport information is available on Redlands Pulse, it is important that all students and parents are across where, when and what time they need to be at training sessions. Students who have registered for sports need to be at all training/trials and weekend commitments. Students who do not attend without prior approval will face school disciplinary action.

Bus Transport

When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Summer Sport

A reminder that all key information for the season has been uploaded onto the Secondary School Sport page of Redlands Pulse, if you have any additional questions, please reach out to the appropriate Sports Administrator listed at the bottom of this page.

Hockey

A massive congratulations to the Junior Girls Hockey team who won the ISA Championship on Saturday! With a very tight match-up, the game was a draw at the end of the second half so was sent into extra time. Shortly into extra time the Redlands Girls were able to score a fantastic goal and secure the Championship. We look forward to celebrating the season with the Hockey Community this week!

Netball

Please don’t forget to book your tickets for the presentation dinner on Wednesday 6 September.

I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible to celebrate the girls. It will be a fabulous way to finish the season.

What an amazing weekend of Netball. The support from the sidelines was fantastic, the buzz, electric at Netball Central. I believe it would have rivalled the excitement of the Diamonds winning the World Cup in Capetown 2 weeks ago!

We had 8 teams go through to the finals this season – we came away with just 2 wins but all the final games were super close and competitive and stretched the girls physically and mentally. To say I was proud was an understatement.

Well done to the Junior Cs and Inter Ds who gave us our two wins this year. Thank you to coaches Portia Amy Wilson with Katie Wightwick on the day taking the reins for the Junior Cs and Natasha Valos, coach for the Inter Ds. Both coaches showed calm and consistent leadership on the day and channelled that through to the girls who came away with convincing wins.

The Inter A team fought very hard against a well-oiled machine of an opponent. The Inter B and C teams were both strong contenders until the last 5mins and only went down by a handful of goals and the Senior 3 team only lost by a nail biting 2 goals in the last 90 seconds! The junior Ds were also in contention the whole game and proved they can certainly put up a fight. Our newest group to Netball, our Junior G team showed huge improvements week on week and with a super tall, accurate GS from Barker it was a tough game indeed for them. However, they made some excellent plays down the court and really worked hard as a team.

I witnessed some tears after this game and it made me smile -this truly is what sport is about. I loved seeing these emotions on the girls as it showed me the girls really cared, cared about their team mates, cared about the score, and that they put it all out on the court and did their best.

I found this great piece from the team at Suncorp who are major supporters of Netball in Australia and it resonated with me so much. Please do take the time to read it. I just love their message and it’s how I feel about sport and how I want all our girls to feel about their Netball and all team sports they try throughout their school life.

View Here

Thank you parents for all your support over the season with pick ups and drop offs, calendar synching, washing uniforms and cutting nails. It does take a village, I know. I will be sending out an email after our presentation night where you can share with me how we can make the season better. I do hope you will share your thoughts with me so I can improve the program where needed. I have so many ideas for next season now that I have completed this one, and I hope you and the girls will like them too.

HICES Athletics Carnival

Good luck to our Junior School Athletics team at the HICES Selection carnival next Tuesday. These athletes have been training hard either on their own or in teams such as the relay teams pictured above since our school carnival and we wish them the best of luck next week. Information about our Athletics program can be viewed here.

Sydney Swans AFLW Matches @ North Sydney Oval

All Redlands students are invited to attend the upcoming match for the Sydney Swans AFLW when they take on GWS Giants on Sunday 3 September at 3pm on North Sydney Oval. Tickets are free for children under 18 Years of age and would be great to not only support the Swans but also support one of our coaching staff, Montana Ham, who plays for the Swans.

Last year we had quite a few families turn up and support with players coming over to us in the stands to meet the Redlands students. The link to purchase tickets can be found here.

Montana Ham was the number one draft pick in the 2022 draft and nominated New South Wales in the state-based draft. Montana started playing football when she was just four years old and has played in four NAB League campaigns, being named best on ground in Vic Metro’s championship this season. She was also judged MVP for the National AFLW Academy side in their game against the U23 All-Stars. Coach Scott Gowans said: “Montana is an elite talent. She is a 180cm midfielder who can play forward as well. She loves contested footy, has clean hands and a strong work ethic. We will play Montana in various roles to suit the team’s needs. Fans can also expect to see her spend some time across the half-back line.

For those of you whose child is coached by Montana you may wish to show them this ‘day in the life of’ clip.

Don’t delay in securing some tickets as the local derby will ensure a great crowd.

You will be allocated to a team (Basketball and Touch) or ranked in Tennis this term in preparation for next term.

Compulsory student attendance- Pre-Season Grading

Those students who are playing a Representative Sport in Term 4 will need to attend the final training and grading session on Saturday 16 September for Basketball, Touch Football, Tennis and Girls only Basketball. This is the only opportunity to finalise teams in preparation for IPSHA for Round 1 which takes place Term 4, Week 1.

Timings and venues can be viewed here Compulsory Representative Training Saturday 16 September

Students may wear their sports uniform to this session as Basketball Jerseys will be loaned out to them for the upcoming season once teams are selected.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Sport Calendar

The sport calendar for Term 3 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2023 JS Sport Calendar

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. Legally Blonde Auditions

Harvard’s beloved blonde takes the Redlands stage by pink storm in this fun, upbeat story of self-discovery. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances – this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal!

We will be holding auditions for Redlands 2024 Senior Musical: Legally Blonde in Week 8! It would be criminal to miss the opportunity to go to Harvard Law as Elle Woods, or teach a class as the villainous Professor Callahan, or just have the time of your life in the Greek Chorus of the Delta Nu Sorority!

Auditions for Orchestra will be held in Week 9 for our superstar musicians.

All Audition Information can be Found Here

We can’t wait to see all the talent Redlands has to share. What? Like it’s hard?

Yr 12 IB Theatre Solo Performance Evenings

Our Yr 12 IB Performance, Theatre Solo Performances is taking place on Thursday 31 of August and 1 September at 6:30pm in the Drama Studio. This term, students have researched theatre theorist, Anne Bogart, and identified an aspect of her theatre practice to use in their Solo Performances. Students were required to reflect on their learning and how it had been impacted, by performing theatre which was based on the exploration of a theorist’s concepts. We warmly invite you to attend.

Yr 11 IB Theatre Incursions

For the past two weeks the Yr 11 IB theatre class came together and collectively viewed two different National Theatre productions, Jane Eyre directed by Sally Cookson and Frankenstein directed by Danny Boyle. Whilst viewing the productions we completed analysis of TEAM – noting down the significant moments that made the plays tension, emotion, atmosphere and meaning through the presentation of production and character elements. Through this process of viewing these two very diversely presented theatre productions, I note the importance of the elements that form the world of theatre.

As a Yr 11 IB student it was interesting and noteworthy to see how all these various elements build a foundation in which audiences are immersed in a world created for the purpose of meaningful presentation of various themes. Through the process of reflection on these incursions and forming a TEAM response for each play I found it useful as a student of theatre on how various performance and production elements are interwoven through plays to create distinct moments intended to resonate with audiences.

In the production of Frankenstein, I was engaged through the unique portrayal of the characters physicalizing which forged tension and was amplified through lighting and sound, confronting the audience in an atmosphere of discomfort. As an audience member I found myself being a part of the creature’s journey, seeing the world through his perspective. Whilst it was interesting noting the various scenes which conveyed these aspects of TEAM, we additionally noticed the intention and impact which the director had crafted.

This experience provided an amazing opportunity for theatre students to collaboratively view, discuss and enjoy performances which also taught us how to effectively apply moments of TEAM in our future performance work.    James Stuart, Yr 11 IB Theatre Student

Drama and Theatre: Student of the Week – Selma Anderson

Selma is just one of many fantastic young performers in our Yr 4 Acting class on a Monday afternoon as we continue to work on our class-devised piece for our end of year showcase. As trying to collaboratively write and develop an original piece of theatre is a unique challenge, all students in the class are more than deserving of this award! However, Selma has demonstrated consistently high energy and focus across the entire process and should be especially commended for her great work so far. Well done Selma! (Zachary Pincini – Drama Tutor)

Yr 11 IB Showcase

The Year 11 IB Students performed for their annual showcase on Tuesday this week. The performances were of an excellent standard and the students should be very proud of their efforts to get to this stage. They were also responsible for preparing for the evening, including set up, sound and announcing their pieces. This will be excellent preparation for the requirements of the Contemporary Music Maker project for Higher Level. Special thanks goes to Ms Arienne Brodie for her preparation and guidance of her students for the evening, and Dr Eskenasi for his work as Resident Associate Artist in accompanying and guiding their performances.

Spotlight on…Year 3 Strings and Choral!

Last week the Yr 3 Strings students enjoyed performing for their peers. Because the strings students have been learning songs from their My Mini Music Books, the audience were able to sing along with songs such as Johnny Caught a Flea, Bell Horses and Sea Shells. Students even used hand signs to show the solfa notes, and were able to identify the songs aurally. Well done Year 3!

Prep Choir Enrolments

As advised last week, please note that Prep Choir Enrolments will close for the year tomorrow. Please use the Cocurricular Enrolment form on Pulse to sign up.
