Issue 25 2022 Term 3 Week 6 - 25 Aug 2022

Community Update

We are fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong and generous tradition of service.  Parents, carers and friends of the School proudly support the enrichment of our students’ lives in many ways, through regular donations and by giving one of the most special gifts of all – their time.

Redlands, like most independent schools, has a Foundation that supports the School’s strategic and philanthropic programs.  The Foundation Advisory Committee (FAC) guide the School with experienced counsel and stewardship of our Foundation Office, providing resources and assistance in support of the School’s Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan

The FAC’s experienced stewardship of our philanthropic program enables Redlands to continue to invest in the growth and advancement of the School.  I was delighted to attend the FAC Meeting this week and my thanks to those who serve on this committee for their individual and collective contribution.

Redlands was thrilled to welcome back to campus School Captains Zoe Thompson (Redlander 2016) and Isabel Simpson (Redlander 2020) this week. Zoe is studying Medicine at the University of Toronto and a keen participant and supporter of our North America Alumni Chapter Meetings. To read more about our Alumni and Foundation Office activities click here.

A reminder that wristbands and coupons for our Spring Fair can be pre-purchased here at a special discount not available on the day. Further details on the Spring fair can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day, along with information on the wide range of parent and carer events that continue to connect our community.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support this Term and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

From The Principal

I am writing my article this week from the Redlands High Country Campus in Jindabyne. It has been most enjoyable to join the students and staff involved in our Winter School program along with Deputy Principal, Sean Corcoran. The campus experienced a significant amount of snow just prior to our arrival, which provided an opportunity for all to appreciate the beauty of the white landscape. We enjoyed the opportunity to join students for their on-campus lessons in Mathematics and English, with challenging topics such as exponential equations and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night being explored. Mr Corcoran resisted the temptation to get involved in acting out the play.

It was inspiring to have the opportunity to tour around the adjoining approximately 200-hectare block of land that the School has recently purchased, to enable future development of exciting experiential learning opportunities for our students. The land has the potential to further enable learning opportunities in a range of different areas, such as outdoor education, environmental restoration and education, First Nations education, innovative thinking and problem-solving, collaborative learning and leadership development. This is a focus of our strategic plan and we look forward to keeping the community informed as plans progress.

Secondary School Environment Captains, Iris Buisman and Jacob Gold, invited The Hon Zali Steggall MP to speak at our assembly this week, as part of their launch of Greenlands Week, with a focus on our local environment as well as fundraising for the Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital. Iris and Jacob have demonstrated passionate and enthusiastic leadership in this important portfolio which was reflected in their speeches. Ms Steggall challenged the students to not underestimate what they could achieve and to always aim high, setting stretch goals and to work in areas that they are passionate about.

It was fantastic to have a large number of ISA teams in finals last weekend. A special mention to the Girls 1st Football team who defeated Barker in an exciting penalty goal shoot-out, with a large contingent of the Boys teams spectators joining them for the emotional celebrations at the end of the game. The Girls 1st Hockey also deserve credit for their strong performance in narrowly going down 1-2 to CCGS.

Congratulations also to the Girls 2nd Hockey team who were crowned joint ISA Premiers with Barker after a full time 1-1 score and no additional goals scored in extra time; and to the Girls Junior Blue Football team and Junior D Netball team for winning their ISA Grand Finals.

Redlanders Visited the Science Fair

Last week we were delighted to welcome Zoe Thompson (School Captain 2016, DUX IB) and Dr Sue Morey AM (School Prefect and Cowper House Captain 1959, DUX) back to campus to hear about their journeys. Zoe is currently visiting Sydney while on holidays before she goes back to Canada to continue her medical training at the University of Toronto. Zoe has volunteered to mentor and support other young alumni living in Canada, particularly if they are intending to pursue tertiary studies at one of the North American Universities. It was lovely for her past teachers to also catch up with her, including Dean of IB Mr Darren Taylor and Science Teacher Ms Kim Hurley. Everyone enjoyed watching the Science Fair in action on the Senior Campus, especially the incredible experiments on display by Yr 11 students.

Taking Action

This year as professional educators we’ve been reflecting both formally and informally about the impact of the pandemic on our young people. At school we’ve noticed that some students are struggling to read non-verbal and facial cues, impacting their social awareness in a range of settings. We’ve also noticed that some for some students, capacity to cope with typical experiences such as disappointment and sadness, has been more challenging. We’ve reflected that this might be from significant time in lockdown, diminished face-to-face interactions and increased screen time while learning from home.

At school, we’re always focused on developing and deepening our young people’s social and emotional competencies, and recently, we’ve been engaging in a range of interventions to counteract the impacts of the pandemic. As parents, you might be wondering what you can do at home to ensure the development of healthy mental models in your children. I really enjoyed a recent article published in The Washington Post, Five Skills parents Can Learn So They Can Help Their Child Cope, by Kathryn Reynolds Lewis. She explores a range of strategies across five areas of focus: attuning, emotional literacy, self-regulation, self-compassion and re-framing. The advice provided resonated with the messages we shared with Yr 12 earlier this week when they returned from their Trial Examinations. Key messages were:

  • Growth comes from being challenged and challenge is uncomfortable.
  • Expect and embrace discomfort.
  • Don’t believe everything you think.

We explored some of the common ‘thinking traps’ such as ‘black and white thinking’, ‘predicting catastrophe’ and ‘mind reading’ in order to enhance student self-awareness around ‘automated negative thinking’ (ANTS) or what Dr Adam Fraser refers to as our inner negative voice ‘Kevin’.

When faced with negative thinking, it’s hard to change our thinking with more thinking. Instead, we change our thinking with action. This week and next, Yr 12 have been tasked with ‘taking action’ – proactively seeking and applying feedback, via teacher conversations and scheduled study.

Digital Wellbeing

Parents are also encouraged to take action too! The digital wellbeing of our young people requires a conscious and united effort by schools, students and parents. Nest Wednesday evening, ySafe return to Redlands for another valuable Parent Seminar. In partnership with industry leaders, the session will focus on the specific challenges and opportunities Secondary School students may encounter in the digital environment and what parents can do to support their child’s digital safety and wellbeing, especially when at home. For your convenience, we have arranged the seminar as both face-to-face in the Learning Hub and accessible via Zoom. I highly recommend this presentation – Dean of Students, Ms Jansons and e-learning Co-ordinator, Ms Wendy Duckworth, will be available in the Learning Hub, to respond to questions, after the seminar.

Please register and attend our ySafe Parent Seminar (in person or via Zoom) next Wednesday 31 August from 6.00pm

Who:               Yr 7-12 Parents and Carers

Venue:             Learning Hub – Level 2

Time:               6pm – 7pm

Booking:          Places are limited so please RSVP here (face-to-face and Zoom)

Parents might also be interested in the following SchoolTV Special Reports

Building Resilience Post Pandemic

“Resilience is the capacity to face, overcome, be strengthened and transformed by adversity. Never before, have parents needed the skills, the knowledge and the strategies to build resilience in their children as much as they do now.”

Building Belonging Post Pandemic

“A sense of belonging involves more than simply knowing other people. It is also focused on gaining acceptance, attention, and support from others as well as having the opportunity to provide the same to other people.”

Managing Screen Time

“Parents have an important part to play in role modelling a positive approach to using screens and assisting young people to navigate the content they watch.”

Student led Assembly (10-12)

Students in Yrs 10 to 12 were fortunate to hear from Ms Zali Steggall OAM, MP, Federal Member for Warringah in our assembly this week. Coinciding with the Greenlands Week student initiative, Ms Steggall spoke with passion about her fight to promote action on climate change and talked to students about the role they can play in being a cause for good in their community.

Greenlands Week offers a number of activities to raise awareness of the importance of the environment, including a raffle to raise money for the WWF Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital. Thanks to Environment Captains Iris Buisman and Jacob Gold for their leadership in this space.

School Captain Sophia Maxwell also spoke about the new Redlands GSA.

Celebrating Diversity and Redlands Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA)

This Friday students are invited to add some purple to their normal school uniform to show support for LGBTQIA+ young people. Research shows that a large majority LGBTQIA+ young people suffer bullying or discrimination, and have a higher proportion of mental health issues compared with their peers.

Striving for a diverse and inclusive community where everyone feels safe to be themselves, we are supporting the Wear it Purple Day to raise awareness and make our support visible.

Coinciding with this is the launch of the Redlands Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA).

The GSA is a lunchtime meeting that aims to:

  • provide an inclusive, supportive and safe forum, open to all, to develop understanding and awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues;
  • promote inclusiveness at Redlands;
  • combine support, advocacy, and a social space;
  • develop a school-wide community where diversity is celebrated and everyone feels accepted.

Over the past couple of months interested students and staff have been working together to plan how we can meet these aims. There will be an informal launch at lunchtime tomorrow for students and staff, with a regular club commencing from Week 9.

Relationships Day Week 7

Next week, Dr Tessa Opie (In Your Skin) will be visiting Yr 8 to Yr 10 students hosting half-day workshops on the topic of relationships and sexuality. Dr Opie’s workshops support young people to develop healthy relationship skills. Students are encouraged to actively consider their relationship values and expectations in order to develop a healthy and realistic sense of self and ‘other’. Yr 7 and Yr 9 will also engage in 1-hour presentations. Outcomes of the Relationships Day aim to improve sexual health and safety, support healthy psychosexual development and promote fun, consenting and egalitarian relationships. Dr Opie’s work is sex positive, evidence-based, inclusive, with a focus on harm reduction. Refreshing and informative, our students and parents have responded well to her previous visits.

Winter School Wonderland

You may know that Mr Webber and Mr Corcoran headed to Winter School for a couple of days this week and joined students and staff in a Winter Wonderland at High Country Campus. The snow dumped down on Tuesday after receiving 15cms of snow overnight. Mr Atkins said it was a sight to be seen! Students were in great spirits and looking forward to the half-way point of the programme.

Yr 12 Careers Presentation

On Monday, Yr 12 met with the Redlands Careers and University Advisors, Ms Clare Hurst and Ms Justine Fowler to hear about the technicalities of how to apply to UAC.

Students were provided with all of accompanying due dates, which parents can access here. The Careers and university Advisors include Yr 12 information in Note Day, and share all of their communication pieces to students with the parents, as they appreciate parents working with them in support of our young people. Ultimately, the goal is that Yr 12 engage with their university applications independently of parents, as we pursue providing them with the foundations for future success as independent young adults.

Subject Selections

Over this term, Students in Yr 9 and 10 have been provided with the opportunity to select their elective subjects for 2023. These preferences have allowed us to develop the timetable structure for 2023, where the allocation of subjects is based on a preferential model rather than a selective model where students would have had to select subjects from pre-allocated lines. Using the preferential model, a higher number of students receive their elective subjects of choice as the subject lines are based student choices.

Students in these year groups have recently received an email informing them of their allocated subjects for 2023. While some changes may still be able to be made, any further changes will need to work within the determined subject lines and class size restrictions. If any student wishes to change their allocations, they should contact Mr Bruce Barry, Dean of Academic Administration.

Yr 7 Students are currently participating in a similar process where they are choosing the Language subject to continue for 2023 and which Creative and Performing Arts subject they wish to commence.

Year 12

Yr 12 are to be congratulated on how they managed their way through the Trial Examinations over the past two weeks. It has been great to have them back onsite fully this week as their presence was missed. During the coming days they will be receiving their examination marks and feedback, and they are encouraged to focus more on the feedback than the marks, looking at ways in which they can improve for their final examinations.

Our Gift, Our Legacy

Yr 12 wish to thank the school for its support, encouragement and opportunities offered to them as a year group, and are proud to announce the Class of 2022 Legacy Gift – to support the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund, to honour Dr Sue Morey AM who graduated from Redlands in 1959 and dedicated over 50 years of service to public health in Australia and continue a legacy of previous cohorts. This fund provides opportunities to exceptional all-rounder students, who otherwise may not have the financial resources to attend Redlands. Currently, the fund has assets to provide four full-time scholarships, with a long-term goal to grant one means-tested full-time scholarship in the Secondary School annually.

Contributing to the Redlands Scholarship Fund, as our Legacy Gift, gives us great pride and fulfilment. Knowing this initiative supports a dedicated fund to provide a student with the opportunity to experience Redlands, as we have been fortunate enough to, is a Legacy Gift we believe is worthwhile and ongoing.

We are inviting the Redlands community to support us in our fundraising efforts by purchasing our ‘Class of 2022’ portrait tea towels and tote bags, or contribute directly to the Scholarship Fund. Please purchase here.

Well done to all IB Science students!

Chapel Music Ensemble

Well done to all Yr 11 students listed below,  who have volunteered their time to be a part of the Chapel Music Ensemble. These students have willingly given up their time to perform. It has been an absolute pleasure watching them all sing and play their instruments.

Model UN Update

Model UN has been a great success in the Yr 11 cohort. Over 60 students have signed up for the club, and we have countries from the USA to Malta being represented on Tuesday lunchtimes. I encourage all students who are interested in diplomacy, global affairs, public speaking or just want to have a fun experience to sign up by emailing me. The club involves choosing a country to represent in the United Nations (either individual or in teams of 2-3), and pursuing their interests through a variety of means including introducing Resolutions (the UN version of ‘laws’), engaging in debates and voting on different ideas. A Delegate has no obligation to speak if they don’t want to, however, participation is highly encouraged!

There have been three meetings thus far, with the agenda for each meeting varying across economic, social and political topic areas. Round 1 was devoted to the Assembly getting into its rhythm with a proposal from the Netherlands to sanction Russia and its allies on the grounds of war crimes and other abuses. Russia, however, successfully fought off the sanctions and defeated the Resolution by a vote of 22-15 in their favour. They argued that economic sanctions should be put into place by individual nations, and not through the UN, which was created to be an instrument for peace.

Round 2 was marked by the United States’ proposal to condemn China’s human rights abuses against the minority Uyghur population in its Northwest region. The US successfully convinced a majority of the Assembly to vote for their resolution and won over even some of China’s strongest allies. China put up a valiant defence, but failed to overcome the moral arguments the US was pushing. Most recently in Round 3, the Assembly zeroed in on another corner of the world, with several Islam-majority nations pushing a resolution to condemn several anti-Islam policies in Western nations, more specifically France. This succeeded thanks to the majority support for the cause.

So far, Model UN has been extremely enjoyable and rewarding. I hope to see everyone in LH3.9 on Tuesday lunchtimes!

Yr 11 Yearly Examinations

Best of luck to Yr 11 who will be undertaking their HSC and IB Yearly Examinations next week. Students are to arrive 15 minutes before the start time of their exam. Yr 11 must still attend their sports training sessions across the 7 days of exams unless an exam coincides with the training session. If a Yr 11 student has no exams on a particular day throughout the exam period, they must still attend their sports training session. Dr. Tessa Opie Healthy Relationships and Sexuality Workshop 1 September

This week, students began the lead-in sessions in preparation for Dr. Opie’s workshop with Yr 10 on Thursday 1 September. During the past 18 months, Redlands has been updating our PDHPE and student wellbeing relationships and sexuality curriculum. To support our school curriculum, Yr 10 will be involved in a workshop facilitated by the fabulous Dr Tessa Opie (In Your Skin) and Redlands teachers.  Further information shared in last week’s Note Day.

Burn Bright Altitude Day 8 September

In Wk 8, Burn Bright presenters will be working with Yr 10 students from 8:20am until noon delivering the Altitude Program.  This program assists students in exploring and developing their own character.  As students approach great heights in their academic journey, it’s crucial for students to explore the foundation of their character as this is what guides people in triumphs and challenges. The program includes the skills and reflections needed to achieve long term personal success, focusing on healthy and intentional relationships and the idea that success is cultivated from a strong support network and especially, a strong understanding of one’s character.

This program builds on discussions students have been having ongoing through their Pastoral Care Program, Dr. Opie’s Healthy Relationships Workshop and further preparation for senior years as students prepare for the last term of Yr 10.

Netball – ISA Finals

It was a great day at netball central last week for the Finals of the 2022 ISA Netball season, with 6 Redlands teams making it through to what are very challenging finals! The Inter A team took on a strong Barker College team who have been on top all year, the girls fought hard and came into the last quarter within 3 goals, unfortunately Baker stepped up a gear and ran away with the match 32-41. The Jnr B girls took on a much improve St Andrew’s team on Saturday morning, the girls knew this was going to be a tough match, with SACS jumping out to a 3-12 lead after the first quarter, the girls looked to bring the margin back but in the end it was too much, going down 18-31. On the court next to the Jnr B team we had the Jnr D team who have been having so much fun on the court this season, and this final was no different, with the girls working hard for each other, which was a lot of fun to watch, the girls took control of this match early and didn’t look back taking the match 30-13. The 12:00pm timeslot came around and saw all three Redlands teams (Inter C, Inter E & Jnr F) taking on Barker College, all of these games were extremely close with the Inter C team leveling up at 33 all with 3 minutes to play, with only 7 players for the final it was great to watch everyone dig deep, unfortunately Barker were too strong taking the match 33-37. The Jnr F team were backing up after a strong semi-final showing against CCGS, this week was going to be no different, with the Barker team being the formidable opponents all year, this game was tight, with teams going goal for goal throughout the first quarter, some tight play toward the end of the 3rd quarter saw Barker jump to a 5 goal lead into the 4th and Redlands were just unable to get it back eventually going down 23-30. The Inter E team again had a tough final against Barker, with this game swinging both ways, Redlands jumped out to an early lead, which then swung both ways, unfortunately the Barker team were too strong taking the match 21-27.

A huge thank you to the coaching staff for their efforts this season, we are very much looking forward to being able to celebrate the 2022 Netball season at the Dee Why RSL on Thursday 15 September. A reminder to all to purchase their tickets by Friday 2 September.

Football

It was great to see four teams through to the ISA Football finals on Saturday! The Junior Blue Girls were up first against Chevalier College. With the Junior Blue team finishing third at the end of the season they know it would be a tough game against the top of the table Chevalier, who had only lost one game all year. Peaking at the right time, the Junior Blue team had a fantastic game and came away with the championship in a huge upset win! The Junior A girls were up next playing against Barker College Junior A who finished top of the table, it was a very tight match up with both teams playing some great Football. Barker managed to get a 2-1 lead and unfortunately the Redlands girls just couldn’t get another goal into the back of the net, but finishing the season as runners-up in the Junior A Division is a fantastic achievement. The 1st Girls were playing against the undefeated Barker College 1st Girls team. An early Barker goal in the first minutes of the game meant the Redlands girls couldn’t hold back. With some great passages of play, the Redlands girls managed to find themselves with a 3-1 lead by half time. Barker came out firing in the second half and managed to secure a 3-3 result by the final whistle. In extra time both teams remained scoreless and the game was headed to a penalty shootout, which is how the final ended the last time these two teams met in 2019. In an absolute nailbiter and some great saves by goalkeeper Jasmine Black Redlands won the penalty shootout 3-1 to become the Division 1 2022 ISA Champions. The 2nd Boys were the last game of the ISA finals day. Coming up against St Patrick’s it was no doubt going to be an intense match up. The 2nd Boys have been a tight unit all season and certainly play with a lot of heart, which is how they have found themselves in the final. With an early Redlands lead the team did their best to hold out St Patrick’s but with the game all tied up at the end of regular time the game was headed into extra time. Similarly to the 1st Girls game both teams remained scoreless in the extra time and were headed to penalties. Unfortunately St Patrick’s had the upper hand in the penalties and eventually took out the Championship but it was a fantastic season by the 2nd Boys and they should be immensely proud of their efforts.

Hockey

It was fantastic to see both the 1st & 2nd Girls Hockey teams through to the finals on Saturday!

The 2nd Girls were up first against Barker College who had finished top of the table in the round games. With the Redlands team being in great form towards the back end of the season, it was set to be a close game. The 2nd Girls managed to continue their great team play and stuck with Barker for the entire game. With the score being level at 1-1 at full time the game was headed into extra time. With no additional goals being scored in extra time the game finished as a 1-1 draw and the teams were named joint premiers for the 2022 Hockey Season.

The 1st Girls were up next and it was a wonderful achievement for the 1st Hockey to make it into the Division 1 ISA Grand Final. A Redlands hockey team haven’t been in that position for years. The girls came to the match with the same fantastic attitude that they have brought to every game: to work hard, encourage one another and play to the best of their ability both as individuals and as a team. And they did just that. We were so proud to watch the girls play determinedly right to the last second. They were unlucky to come away with a 2-1 loss but what is most important is that they played amazingly, with a beautiful attitude as a team. The girls have come a long way this season and it has been a joy to watch them flourish. A big thank you to each and every one of them for everything that they contributed to Redlands hockey this year.

General Sport Information

Wet Weather

If training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 8-12)
In order to limit student mixing indoors, Students in Year 8-12 who are dismissed at the end of Period 5 are required to go directly home. Sport coaches and Redlands staff will supervise their COVID-safe departure.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 7)
In the event that year 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.20pm and participate in sport based activities.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

Winter Gala Day

In our follow up event to the 2020 Inaugural Winter Gala Day we had over 200 students sign up into their houses and participate in this event. It was great to see so many students sign up who did not normally play Football for the school. The chance to play Football with their friends while representing their house proved to be a drawcard leading up to the day. We were also fortunate to have the bye in Girls AFL competition which meant they could participate too.

The format of 7 v 7 small sided games for Years 3,4 and 5 before moving to full field in 15min games with no breaks allowed for fast flowing games of Football. Each house was assigned two coaches to look after them and the competition between them was just as fierce as it was on the field for the students. The finals on the day were based on the results from the matches all morning. The final saw Cowper take on McDouall with McDouall winning 5-0. The overall point score from all grades over the morning saw Cowper claim the trophy for 2022 beating McDouall 168-163 points.

In looking at the results for each grade

Year 3 division was won by Cowper

Year 4 division was won by Dumolo

Year 5 division was won by McDouall

Year 6 division was won by McDouall

Well done to all students on their participation and to the coaches for their hard work all morning. It was also great that we were able to keep our neighbours with parents and carers following the staggered drop off and pick up locations at various times.

We had a photographer on the day so will send a link home once he has uploaded all the action shots from the day.

Sydney Swans WAFL Player Visit

We were fortunate to have secured a visit from Sydney Swans WAFL team to come and spend an hour with our girls team who are currently playing in their IPSHA Term 3 competition.  Bella Smith, number 11 for the Swans ran through a series of drills and skills with our Year 6 team on Monday. Her bio is below along with some photos of our students in action.

Bella Smith was recruited by Collingwood in the 2020 AFLW Draft and prior to that played three seasons with Norwood in the SANFL. Originally from Cleve on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, Smith has played for the Central Allies, the representative team for South Australia and the Northern Territory at the 2019 AFLW Under 18 Championships. A rebounding defender, Smith also has the ability to play up forward. She’s also been part of a great program at Collingwood too. Bella is a very resilient athlete who has moved to multiple states to pursue her career in AFLW.

This Swans play their inaugural game on Nth Sydney Oval this Sunday at 5pm and Redlands families are invited to attend.

HICES Athletics

A mix of boys and girls from Under 9’s to Under 12’s who had qualified for the team based on their performance at our school carnivals competed with enthusiasm and maturity. Redlands was responsible for hosting the carnival and while a few schools were unable to make it due to the roads out of the mountains being shut due to Tuesday’s wild weather it was perfect conditions for those on track. We had 23 students qualify for the HICES team who will now compete at CIS later this term and those families have been  notified via engage this week.

Year 12 HSC External Examinations

This Friday the Year 12 HSC Drama students are completing their final performance examinations. Markers from across the state will spend the day assessing their group and individual performances. Performance exams require a different style of preparation. This is a very exciting but nervous time for these students. Below are some tips to help Year 12 but also any student prepare for any performance.

Be Rested

It all starts the night before the exam. Be well rested and arrive at the exam centre in plenty of time. Make sure you’re both physically and mentally fresh because your brain is about to get a whirlwind of a workout in a very short space of time.

Warm up beforehand

If you have a chance to warm up at the venue before the performance, it is a good idea to go through your performance once or twice. If you haven’t got time to go through the full performance, you should still warm up one way or the other, so that you are ready to deliver a great performance.

Focus and Confidence: Trust your rehearsal process

Just before the performance, it is a good idea to recap in your head what you are going to do on stage. Once you are on stage, your focus should be 100% on the performance and nothing else. Use this time to positively reflect on your rehearsal process and be confident in your choices.

Senior Curriculum Performance Evenings

In the upcoming weeks, we have an array of senior curriculum performance evenings, showcasing their classwork over the semester. We encourage friends and family to attend to support all students involved. Please see the information below for these evenings.

Music

Spotlight on Kindergarten Music

This term our Kindergarten students are learning all about the Violin – how it works, how it sounds and what kinds of music you can make on a violin. We even had a special treat in Kindy Blue with Anniela and Jasper performing live on their instruments! Students loved hearing the violin ‘in real life’ and used their visible thinking strategies to ask interesting questions about the instrument.

Rock Bands – Live at Lunch

As a special treat this week, the senior campus Rock Bands have taken to the stage of the Fahl Garden to serenade their friends. Special thanks to Mr Montz and the Rock Band tutors for facilitating these fun additions to our lunch times!

Spring Fair Music items – calling Prep and Junior School Students!

We look forward to supporting our Rock Band, Jazz Combo and Year 11/12 students as they take to the Spring Fair stage on the 3rd September 2022. At 10:15am we also invite all Prep and Junior School students to join in with a singalong of a song all students know: ‘Sesere Eeye’. We will enjoy singing and dancing together on stage in the Fahl Garden with any students who are in attendance at this time.

Junior Campus Ensemble Openings

It’s not too late to join an ensemble on the Junior Campus! As we begin to prepare for end of year performances, we invite students to consider joining an ensemble and all details can be found on Pulse. We are particularly eager for any budding wind / brass / percussion students who have private lessons to submit an application form to audition for Concert Band.

Senior Music Awards Dinner 2022

Tomorrow night! Tickets for the dinner have sold out and we can’t wait to join our community for this much-loved sit down dinner, honouring the contributions of our senior musicians and celebrating that gift that Music is to our community. A reminder to all performers to please meet punctually at the John Roberts Centre straight after school so that the buses can leave promptly at 3.30pm.

Senior Instrumental Competition 2022

The finalists have been announced and rehearsals are in place for the coming Senior Instrumental Competition on Monday 19th September. The three divisions will kick off at 5.30pm. Parents and friends are welcome to attend, and can reserve some of the limited seats available via the link below.
