Issue 24 2023 Term 3 Week 5 - 17 Aug 2023

From the Principal

This week has been Science Week at Redlands, and it has been wonderful to see various events, activities and guest speaker presentations highlighting and celebrating science, technology and innovation at Redlands.

On Tuesday afternoon, I heard Dr Melanie Zeppel (Redlander and current Redlands parent) present to the Junior School on the current advancements and future possibilities of artificial intelligence. Yesterday morning was our annual Breakfast with a Scientist on the Senior Campus, and I would like to thank the Redlands parents, as well as Dr Sue Morey AM (Redlander from the Class of 1959 and former Chief Health Officer of NSW) for sharing their insights and expertise with our students.

At lunch time yesterday, I joined a number of Secondary Students in the Lang Gym for the Paper Plane Competition. (I was in the Year 11 and 12 category as this was closest to my age, and I am pleased to share that I must still remember a bit of my paper plane construction from when I was a child, as I was one of the two winners in this category!)

This morning I got to hear some of Dr Laura Driessen’s talk on astronomy to our Years 3-5 students, while tomorrow morning I look forward to seeing our Prep School students sharing some of their STEAM learning, followed by Dr Vanessa Pirotta’s presentation on her wildlife research.

With a Culture of Innovation as one of our key strategic drivers, it is heartening to see the many and varied activities as part of Science Week that are extending, challenging and inspiring our students in this area at Redlands.

It was a pleasure to join a large number of parents and carers at our Redlands Gala Ball on Saturday evening. It was certainly a memorable night as, at the outset, we were all anxiously following the Matildas game with groans of disappointment or cheers of joy bursting around the venue after each penalty kick of the shoot out. Thank you to the many parents whose efforts, support and generosity made the event possible as we were not only able to enjoy each other’s company, but also raise money for the Dr Sue Morey AM means-tested Scholarship.

Last night I attended the 2023 HICES (Heads of Independent Co-Educational Schools) Music Festival which brings together student musicians from across the over 60 schools which comprise the HICES network in NSW. Congratulations to the many Redlands students who performed on the night, as well as our P-12 Director of Music Performance, Mr Matthew Owen, who was one of the conductors on the evening.

It was great getting around to a number of the Secondary School ISA winter sport semi-final matches last Saturday, and I wish all of the teams competing in the ISA finals this weekend all the best.

Community Update

We are not just a school, we are a community … a community that generously welcomes the opportunity to come together in celebration and support of a wonderful cause. It was a genuine pleasure to join parents, carers and friends of Redlands at the Winter Wonderland Gala Ball on Saturday evening for this truly memorable event. Thank you to our passionate organising committee, our guests, partners and donors and of course our talented alumni performers for bringing this event to life. A special note of thanks to our MC, Redlands alumna and designated Winter Queen, Catriona Rowntree, who kept us all highly entertained, in line and on target … whilst score checking our mighty Matildas progress throughout! To read more about our Gala Ball and to view some of the terrific images captured please check out the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

We recognise the vital relationship between home and school and our wonderful Redlands Parents and Friends Association, Parent Contact Groups, Friends of Groups, Class and Year Group Parent volunteers all help to keep our school community connected, included and supported.

Our RPFA Meeting this week included the Redlands Chair of the Board, Principal and Deputy Principal who all spoke passionately about the exciting array of current and future activities, initiatives and programs the School has planned. For 139 years, the Redlands culture has been one of engagement, excellence, acceptance and innovation, translating to success for our students and staff, and our connection to community remains a core focus for our continued growth and prosperity.

A reminder that the Redlands Parent Prayer Group will gather on Monday 21 August from 7 to 8pm in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Cremorne, providing the opportunity for those interested to come together in prayer for our school community.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

What a truly memorable Winter Wonderland Gala Ball night which, with everyone’s support, raised $160,000 for the means-tested Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship. There are so many people to be thanked to make this evening such a great success! All the guests, who made an effort to dress up, our Event partners and sponsors, staff, volunteers and Alumni! Thank you to our Event Partner, Belle Property, our Platinum Sponsors Evoka and Nurse Next Door Home Care Services, and our very generous Prize Donors for your incredible contributions.

Our dedicated Gala Ball Committee played an integral part of the Event preparation, which started straight after the Autumn Fair.

The evening featured our Winter Queen and exceptionally entertaining MC, Catriona Rowntree, Redlander 1989, and wonderful vocal performances by Rebecca Ordiz and Matilda Williams, Redlanders 2019. We are also grateful to the numerous young alumni who gave up their Saturday night and played a key role during the festivities to help raise funds and promote the School.

The raffle prizes were drawn on the night and the highly anticipated online Bali Raffle sold out! The winner is Michele Adamson. Congratulations to all the winners!

The whole evening was a reflection of the strong connection among our community and desire to advance the School. When we were leaving the event after packing up, one of our families greeted me with “Go Redlands”! What a kudos to us all.

Redlands Parents and Friends

What a week! Thanks to all who attended Gala Ball and/or participated in the auction – a record-breaking amount was raised to support the Dr Sue Morey AM means-tested Scholarship, with a slight delay to proceedings as attendees held their breaths during the nail-biting penalty kickoff that saw the Matildas head into the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the Matildas could not secure a berth in the finals last night, nor a public holiday for the rest of us… but there are plenty of chances to catch up with Redlands parents and friends in the next few weeks before the next school holidays (see below). If there are any other get-togethers you know of that we are missing, please do let us know!

We are also planning a secondhand uniform sale of summer uniforms before end of term. Watch this space.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Our walk next week on Wed 23 Aug is from Harbord Diggers to Dee Why Headland. Meet at Harbord Diggers, Lumsdaine Dr, Freshwater at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie on 0406 691 533.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our next book for this term is Babel by R.F. Kuang. The date for the meeting is to be confirmed. New book suggestions for next term are welcome!

Parents Tennis

We held the Senior School Parents Tennis Day on Wed 16 August. It was a day that started out with a little trepidation in terms of the weather but fortunately the weather Gods shone down on us and we managed a beautiful day on court with the sun managing to shine through.  The day was attended by around 22 Parents from across the school. We had a fierce Round Robin Competition with 10 competitors in the running for the title. Shirley Barnes (Year 3) outplayed everyone by winning the most games. Shirley took home the winners trophy, a new Babolat Tennis racquet and a set of balls.

The clinic attendees had a great time either playing tennis for the first time or gaining some new skills. Fran McGourty (Year 9) won the Clinic Lucky Door prize of a private tennis lesson.

The last three weeks have been such fun that we are planning on running these sessions on an annual basis. Stay tuned for details in the new year.

It’s all happening for Yr 12

This week, along with all other Yr 12 teachers, I returned Trial Examinations to students. Whilst there is always a temptation to spend a good deal of time talking and often commiserating about the Trials, it’s actually necessary to reflect quickly, decide on some clear actions and then move forward. On Sunday night I made a plan for the reminder of the term and counted up the lessons left – there are 23 – well there were 23. Today there are 19 remaining. I shared the plan with my class because I rely on them to hold me accountable.

As a teacher I love the time after the Trials. It’s when all the lightbulb moments happen for Year 12. They have been tested and survived; now they know they can manage an intense period of exams and from this experience emerges the capacity to really distil the most effective study strategies to assist their transfer of deep learning to an examination setting. This realisation is epiphanous for some students who through reflection and conversation with teachers come to clearly articulate what they will take forward from the Trials and what they will leave behind as they move towards the HSC, which is about 7.5 weeks away, and the IB which is about 9 weeks away. For me, the student-teacher conversations post-Trials are so formative in this respect. Yes there is written feedback – either on the Trial paper or via the Marker’s Report, but the opportunity to sit, chat and consider ‘what next’ with a subject teacher is necessary to motivate and propel students forward. In my conversations with students this week, we are interrogating:

  • What went well
  • What was surprising and disappointing
  • Time management lessons
  • Following a Study Schedule in a consistent way
  • Barriers to being self-disciplined and consistent
  • Support mechanisms

We are setting actions – not loads of them, but a few actions for the next one to two weeks. Mostly these actions involve re-reading, re-writing, re-thinking. But sometimes they also involve tidying a bedroom, asking parents for support, or shifting into a higher gear – one that holds higher expectations for self. Most Year 12s can drive now – so the ‘pedal to the metal’ metaphor works well. We do not want to increase our speed too forcefully, but we do want to slowly accelerate in terms of effort and output as we approach the final examinations. Some students need to dial down their efforts (burnout is real for some Year 12 students), some need to maintain a steady speed but generally, most Year 12 students should be steadily dialling up – or slowly increasing their efforts and output. Usually they have more in the tank than they think they do. In the final few weeks of secondary school, Year 12 experience many emotions. They are often tired, stressed and managing the deep learning demands of their subject courses. They are also navigating the emotions that surface for all young people as they conclude their secondary school journey. Excitement, sadness, trepidation – all three may be felt on any given day. Aware of all that is going on for our senior students at this time, we tend to advise them to break up the final study period into two distinct chunks – the weeks prior to graduation and the weeks after graduation and in the lead up to the final examinations. A Study Schedule is essential; they can find blank schedules and an example on their Core iLearn pages. In this they should map out their study but also their downtime and events. Also essential is reflection, conversation and relaxation. Tomorrow, we look forward to our Year 12 cohort having a bit of fun with a pyjama and pizza day. I imagine the students in Year 7 to 11 will be a little jealous but I also know they look up to Year 12 with admiration and respect. We only have them for a little time left and we look forward to celebrating their final stages of their school journey with them over the coming weeks.

Student Recognition – Kids Giving Back

Our Principal, Mr Corcoran, and I were proud to receive an email from Carole Schlessinger, CEO and Co-Founder of the organisation Kids Giving Back, sharing how a number of our Secondary School students and their families spent time volunteering in the first half of the year to help others through this organisation.

Kids Giving Back is a charity whose mission is to create the next generation of generosity through meaningful, hands-on experiences for young people to give back to others. Through charity partners, they arrange opportunities for children aged 6-18 years old and their families to provide assistance and support for people experiencing food scarcity or hardship.

The contribution of our students resulted in the production of over 8500 hot meals, salads, fruit kebabs, breakfast boxes, snack packs and care packs with empathetic, positive messages, which were distributed to 15 charities around Sydney. In addition, 1800 servings of soup were served at a twice weekly soup kitchen.

I will duly acknowledge these students in assembly next week but I wanted to also do so through this wider community communication as well. Thank you to the following students who participated in one or more of the programs:

Alexandra Lloyd Yr 11, Jack Petering Yr 11, Chloe Petering Yr 8, Noah O’Keefe Yr 8, Madeline Moore Yr 7.

To hear of our Redlands students embracing the concept of contributing back into the community is heart-warming and a wonderful example of our students living our School Values whilst making a difference to the lives of others and as Carole wrote, “their exceptional leadership qualities, compassion, and strong sense of civic responsibility are truly inspiring and a testament to the values that your school instils in them.”

Yr 12 Pizza and PJ Day

As we approach the halfway point of their Year 12 journey, we are organizing a “Pizza and PJ Day” for Year 12 tomorrow, to commend their hard work and dedication, specifically throughout the Trial Exam period.

Year 12 will enjoy a delicious pizza lunch on the Learning Hub Rooftop and use this time to connect outside of the classroom. Wearing pyjamas will add a casual and comfortable touch to the event, creating a unique and enjoyable atmosphere.

The Pizza and PJ Day holds significance as it not only marks the completion of their Trial Exams but also symbolises the halfway point in their Year 12 journey. It’s an opportunity for Year 12 to come together and foster a sense of camaraderie, recognising the efforts our Year 12s have put into their senior studies.

Yearly Examination Block Reminders

All students will continue to be reminded of all HSC and IB expectations over these next few weeks through their respective cohort meetings. Information regarding these expectations are linked for students in their IB and HSC iLearn pages. For all students:

  • All students should arrive to examinations at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the examination time in full school uniform.
  • No students should be driving to or from school. Students have been asked to arrange for being dropped off or taking public transport to school on examination days.

HSC Student Reminders and Expectations

This week, Mrs Lucy Benjamin, Dean of HSC, spoke to the HSC cohort about their upcoming examinations and their option to change or drop a class as they begin YR 12. The presentation is linked in the HSC Core iLearn Page for students to refer to and a few key items are listed below:

  • Students must email SSAbsence, Mrs Lucy Benjamin and Ms Alissa Ynson if they will be missing an examination due to illness or misadventure. A doctor certificate will be required for any examination missed due to illness dated on the day of the examination.
  • If students would like to make any changes to their schedule for Term 4, they are encouraged to begin speaking with appropriate staff now (i.e. classroom teachers and Mrs Benjamin) prior to submitting their schedules in Wk 9.

Go the Matildas!

The Matildas storming into the semi-finals has been an absolute blast of excitement, and our Yr 10 students showed their support as they donned the green and gold on Wednesday. This is more than just a sports moment – it’s a game-changer for women in sports history. The Matildas are laying down a marker for the future, telling all the young girls out there that they can kick butt on any field they choose. What an exciting time to be supporting such a wonderful group of women.

Service Project

Yr 10 students were fortunate to listen to Paul Bramble from St Johns Community Services this week. Paul shared some of his life story, and how he overcame significant trauma, mental illness and drug addiction to arrive at a place of stability with strong faith and connections. Paul has also found joy in his freelance photography work and can hardly believe he gets asked to photograph events like Australian Fashion Week and the Logies!

Wellbeing Bubbles

Wellbeing is important for students. It’s not just about staying physically healthy, but also feeling good mentally and emotionally. When students have good wellbeing, they handle stress better, focus more, and become stronger when facing difficulties. Taking care of wellbeing helps students do well in school, feel happier, and build better relationships. It’s like giving them the right tools to succeed in school and life. Yr 10 will be engaging in a number of different wellbeing activities each week during Tutor Time.

City2Surf

The City2Surf, an iconic annual event, is a thrilling road race that captures the essence of community, fitness, and fun. Participants from all walks of life gather to traverse the 14km’s of picturesque course, which spans from the city to one of the world’s most famous beaches, Bondi. This year’s event witnessed the remarkable achievements of two dedicated runners, Sarah Zeppel and Amynta Field. For Amynta, it marked her debut in the race, a momentous occasion that showcased her determination and grit. Meanwhile, Sarah, a seasoned runner, made a triumphant return to the City2Surf. The duo embarked on the challenging course together, and they not only accomplished a shared goal but also recorded an impressive time of 1:27:54, showcasing their remarkable fitness and perseverance. Their accomplishment stands as a testament to the spirit of unity and personal achievement that the City2Surf represents.

Winter Representative Sport Grand Finals

The impromptu ‘green and gold’ supporters day on Wednesday highlighted the powerful impact that the Matildas’ journey to the World Cup has had for women’s football and sport on the whole. While last night’s Semi-Final result was not the outcome hoped for, the Matildas’ resilience, grace and fortitude in defeat alongside their wins reminds us grit and determination are powerful tools for success.

With this in mind, we wish all of our Yr 9 students who are participating in a Grand Final this weekend the best of luck!

Thinking about Term 4 Examinations

While this may seem very early, being midway through a term often means that organisational systems start to become overburdened or broken down. This happens as a result of a focus on assessments and difficulties in managing large content volumes in most subjects.

With the planned assessment block for Yr 9 early in Term 4, we will be encouraging students to do a ‘stocktake’ of their notes and learning resources over the next week with the end goal of making revision an easier process at the start of next term.

This should also be done as part of independent learning time each night, with part of this time dedicated to organisation.

This time could be spent:

  • Re/organising digital resources – putting files into appropriate folders based on subject and topic
  • Setting up personal notes – taking learning from class and translating into a preferred format e.g. a study book or a single Google Doc – in both cases there should be one per subject
  • Developing flashcards for key terminology or language
  • Starting to develop a study plan for the first three weeks of next term

Wellbeing Wednesday

Wellbeing is important for students. It’s not just about staying physically healthy, but also feeling good mentally and emotionally. When students have good wellbeing, they handle stress better, focus more, and become stronger when facing difficulties. Taking care of wellbeing helps students do well in school, feel happier, and build better relationships. It’s like giving them the right tools to succeed in school and life. Over the coming weeks, Yr 9 will be working together to engage in student-devised wellbeing and service initiatives.

2024 Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land

Following on from a wonderfully successful Year 9 Camp, in partnership with Culture College, we will be offering a Homeland Tour to Arnhem Land on 21-27 April 2024. This Tour will be open to current Year 9 students.

In this cultural immersion, students will revisit and build on the ideas they were introduced to earlier in the year during the Culture College Camp, consolidating knowledge and understanding. After a brief stay at the Gulkula site students will travel to one of the remote Yolngu Homeland areas, usually Nyinyikay. This offers the opportunity for a much more personal, extensive and detailed exploration of Yolngu culture than was possible on the year group Camp.

Visiting and spending time in a Yolngu Homeland is something few people ever get to experience. Students will be immersed in the living culture of Aboriginal clans of East Arnhem Land, one of the most culturally intact and pristine regions left on Earth. This unique program provides privileged access and interaction with the Yolngu people and their lands of which they have been the traditional owners for over 50,000 years.

This Tour is an opportunity for students who are ready and willing to consider more deeply the knowledge they gained previously and how to effect change for the future. This is a time of great importance for the relationship between First Nations and non-indigenous peoples and we are proud to be working with Culture College to provide opportunities for connection between cultures.

The cost of the tour is $5,395. A proposed itinerary and booking form are available through the Dean of Activities, Mr Jon Gray – please email through for this information. Students were presented with  information in an Assembly last Friday.

Bookings and payments are made directly to Culture College, so please check their Terms and Conditions on the Booking Form once you have a copy.

Sporting Excellence

While it’s not the outcome we hoped for, the Matilda’s efforts throughout the Women’s World Cup have had a wonderful impact on both womens sport in Australia and serve as a timely reminder of grit and grace in competition.

The impromptu ‘green and gold’ supporters day on Wednesday clearly highlighted the positive impact this event has had.

With this in mind we wish all of our Yr 8 students who are participating in a Grand Final this weekend the best of luck.

Starting to Prepare for Term 4 Examinations

While this may seem very early, being midway through a term often means that organisational systems start to stretch or break down. This happens as a result of a focus on assessments and difficulties in managing large content volumes in most subjects.

With the planned assessment block for Year 8 in Week 4 of Term 4 we will be encouraging students to do a ‘stocktake’ of their notes and learning resources over the next week with the end goal of making revision an easier process at the start of next term.

This should also be done as part of independent learning time each night, with part of this time dedicated to organisation.

Wellbeing Thursdays

One of the key focal points for our pastoral program this year has been on recognising the opportunities for wellbeing and community building that come with dedicated Tutor time each day.

What originally started as ‘Fun Friday’ – taking some time out of the normal academic and extracurricular rigours of the day and enjoying one another’s company through activities including; trivial pursuit, card games, mindfulness colouring, basketball and dodgeball has begun to take on more of a life of its own.

We have passed the opportunity to students to have a voice in this, with a dedicated day (now Thursday) for students to plan for and run their own wellbeing and community-based activities in consultation with members of their group and their Tutors.

The photos below provide a snapshot of this time spent during Tutor today.

Year 7

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie – Oi, Oi, Oi!

Well, what a week – nay, month – it has been for Australian sport; and particularly women in sport. The Australian Women’s Football team, the Matildas, have been inspiring us on and off the field, playing a brand of high energy and high skill football, and also modelling highly respectful play, showing us all the beauty of good sportsmanship. It has been a joy to watch them progress from 32 teams at the World Cup down to the top four, and it was a little bit heartbreaking to see them knocked out last night (but what about that goal by Sam Kerr?!).

Redlands loves its sport, and it was wonderful to see students and staff getting behind the Tillies (with some supporting the British Lionesses too!) prior to last night’s semi-final. The School allowed students to wear green and gold to support the team, adding a positive vibe to the day, as little splashes of colour painted the Senior Campus.

And what a perfect time to show our support for powerful icons of sporting skill and sportsmanship as our winter sport teams prepare for their finals this week.

Good luck to our winter sport teams who have made it into finals this week. I want to especially extend my good luck wishes to all our Yr 7s who have reached their first finals for representative winter teams, including the Football Boys 13As, the Football Girls Junior As, Hockey Junior A, and the Netball Junior C, D and G teams. They each have some tough matches ahead, and I hope they can play with the same dignity and love for their sport as we have seen the Tillies embody.

Good luck everyone!!

Fall Forwards (flipping backwards, rolling sideways, jumping vertically and moving ever so gracefully) award – Phoebe Sun

On Tuesday, our Yr 12 leaders were back at the helm, presenting our student leaders’ assembly for Yrs 7-9. There were some important notices about the role scientific breakthroughs are playing in supporting environmental concerns and our Sports Captains held an engaging ‘heads, shoulders, hips’ quiz about the history of the Matildas.

Most importantly, though, we saw our Captains award another Redlands Fall Forward award – this time to Phoebe Sun. You might have guessed from the sub-heading or recognised the name from previous Note Day editions, but Phoebe is a phenomenal dancer. She has already achieved great success in external competitions this year and also performed recently in her first Gala Arts night. Phoebe has also engaged so well in other areas of the school, including her academics, and so she was such a suitable recipient of the Fall Forward award. Congratulations!

Dropping the Beats with 7R

I try to move around the School when I can to get a sense of the different things Yr 7 are doing around the place. I was fortunate enough to pop my head into 7R in Music on Tuesday and caught them in the midst of creating EDM tracks. They were layering a range of various instrumental and vocal tracks together to create some sweet EDM beats. Now, I remember playing recorder in school and perhaps being allowed to graduate to percussion at some stages, but never did we get to do such engaging musical exercises. Who knows, maybe we will find the next Skrillex or David Guetta amongst us?

Making use of Great Resources – the Study Centre and the Library

At Redlands, we know how important it is to support students in their academic endeavours. The School offers a range of supports to assist students in completing home learning, engage in valuable assessment study and generally develop their executive functioning skills. One of the most utilised and certainly most useful of these resources is the Study Centre.

The Study Centre is open on Level 2 of the Learning Hub on Monday to Wednesday from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. You can check the Yr 7 page on Pulse for a full timetable. It is an excellent resource as it offers students both quiet and group work spaces for moving through home learning, preparing for assessments and consolidating their class learning. A range of subject teachers are also available for guidance and one to one coaching where necessary. If students need some extra support, the Study Centre is a great place to visit.

Our Library can also be a great space for students to collaborate and catch up on home learning when they need a settled space to work at lunch time. It has been pleasing to see a vast range of Yr 7 students making use of these locations to help support them through our busy term of assessments.

A Book a Day Keeps the Literacy Police at Bay

The Library is a great place for quiet work but, most importantly, it is a great place to borrow a book! Recently, many Yr 7 English classes have been making use of a DEAR (drop everything and read) approach, starting each lesson with quiet reading to get them engaged in the lesson ahead. We all know the great benefits reading has in building vocabulary, developing confidence in writing and refining general expression skills, so let’s keep encouraging Yr 7 to get behind a book and read, read, read!

Reminder: History Excursion in Week 6 (August 22 and 23)

In Week 6, Yr 7 are going on a History excursion to examine ancient artefacts at the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney. It will be a wonderful and engaging experience for them, offering them the chance to see and hold a wide range of interesting artefacts, and view some surprising representations of the ancient world!

Key information:

  • Core classes 7B, 7O, 7P and 7Y will attend on Tuesday 22 August
  • Core classes 7G, 7M and 7R will attend on Wednesday 23 August

Students will depart from the Senior Campus at 8.20am and return to school by 1pm. They will eat lunch at school and attend their regular timetabled classes in Periods 5 and 6.

Students are required to wear their full school uniform (including blazer), and are asked to pack their recess, water bottle and any personal medication (e.g. EpiPen, asthma puffer) in a small bag that is not their school bag.

A Reminder of Behaviour Expectations

On Monday of this week, Yr 7 had their fortnightly Year Assembly. I took the opportunity to remind students of the wonderful resources, learning environment and community we have at Redlands, and the importance of making sure it and each individual within it is cared for and supported. I reminded students of some key expectations we have of them to ensure everyone in the school is able to ‘let their light shine’. Some of the messages repeated were to keep:

  • using student planners effectively to keep track of home learning and assessments. And remember to get them signed by Friday Week A.
  • mobile phones in your locker during school time, to remove unnecessary distractions.
  • your lockers locked – important for the security of your possessions.
  • the Undercroft tidy by picking up rubbish and keeping personal belongings and bags in your lockers.
  • your uniform neat and in good order.
  • bringing a respectful and reflective demeanour to Chapel and other formal occasions.
  • showing kindness and gratitude in your interactions with others.

I finished the assembly by challenging everyone to engage in at least one random act of kindness over the week. I know how kind our Yr 7s can be and hopefully we will keep seeing them build their care, compassion and concern for each other as we move through this year together.

When Was The Last Time You Checked Your Child’s Device?

As you would be aware, we have a cyclical program of digital student education through ySafe foundation to help our students stay safe online and manage their digital world. This includes how to stay safe on social media and gaming platforms. The ySafe program also centres on digital wellbeing and dives deeper into using messaging apps and games as well cyberbullying and bystander behaviour online.

Today, I spoke with Yr 6 as we have become aware of large groups set up in TikTok and the use of highly inappropriate language and potential breaches of privacy. The legal requirements to use social media sites is for users aged 13 years and over. As Australia’s leading Cybersafety educators, ySafe experts suggest TikTok users are 15 years and over.

I strongly encourage every parent to explore our own Redlands Cybersafety Hub which has been co-constructed with ySafe for our community with resources, tips and information. This link is to a helpful Cybersafety fact sheet and as parents, please know that you can also report any concerns directly via the Office of the eSafety Commissioner’s report online harm section, just as we can do as a school.

From time to time as per our Junior School ICT Student Responsible User Guidelines (pp.16-17 of the Student Planner and signed by students and parents), we do occasionally carry out spot checks and audits on student devices to ensure that they are being safely and appropriately used. This is a practice that ySafe talked about last year as something that parents should also do periodically to check that your child is safe online and behaving appropriately. We would strongly recommend this too. If you need assistance with this process, please do contact our IT team who will be only too happy to help.

Ultimately, we are here to help provide students with the tools to navigate the digital environment but also to align this with our School Values and uphold our behavioural expectations. As parents, I know you would want the same, both at school and in your home.

National Science Week

We have really enjoyed the opportunity to shine the spotlight on Science this National Science Week, the theme of which has been Innovation: Powering Future Industries. Junior School students explored topics of why Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are important in our every day and future lives including a fascinating presentation from Dr Melanie Zeppel, a Redlander and also a current parent of the school, who shared her passion for STEM and exploring how mechanical learning and AI supports Innovations in Agriculture.

Today, Dr Laura Driessen also shared her passion for STEM and her focused work in astronomy and innovations in space and on Monday, the Sydney Water Wonder of Waters Van visited our campus and Yr 3 investigated ‘Innovations Around Us’, understanding more about the management of water in Sydney and around the world.

Another new initiative has seen Yr 6 students leading a variety of fun STEM-themed activities for students to take part.

My thanks to our Dean of Teaching and Learning, Ms Anagnostu, for championing this week and providing such a breadth of activities and experiences for the students to engage in.

Education Perfect 2023 NSW Regional Languages Championship

We’ve done it again! After a very exciting finish, 5 Blue managed to bring us home in 1st place for Spanish in the final minutes of the NSW Education Perfect Language Championships.  Special mention should also go to 3 Yellow and 6 Red from the Junior School and all the Junior and Secondary School classes who worked hard to set 5 Blue up for the fun-filled frenzy of the final moments of the competition last Friday morning.

Redlands answered around 96,000 questions and in addition to coming 1st in Spanish in NSW out of 151 schools, we came 12th in NSW for all subjects out of 453 schools and 3rd in NSW overall for our category of schools (1001-2500 students) out of 14 schools.

The following students achieved Certificates for their outstanding performance in the competition:

  • Tara Clarke       6 Blue               Bronze Award with 1,224 points
  • Anne Zhang      4 Yellow            Bronze Award with 1,012 points
  • Isha Gupta,       5 White             Credit Award with 530 points
  • Teigan Clarke    5 Red                Credit Award with 520 points

Congratulations to every student who took part in the Championships. You have all contributed to our success whilst practising your language skills during this fun and motivating competition.

Student Recognition – Kids Giving Back

Our Principal, Mr Corcoran, and I were proud to receive an email from Carole Schlessinger, CEO and Co-Founder of the organisation Kids Giving Back, sharing how a number of our Junior School students and their families spent time volunteering in the first half of the year to help others through this organisation.

Charlie Benfield, Mac Costa, Amelie Doherty, Charlie Hutchings, Cameron Lloyd, Rachael Lloyd, Eloise Mather, Rafael Nicholas, Joanna O’Keefe, Noah O’Keefe, Aggie Storch-Lees,

Book Week Dress Up Day: Tuesday 22 August

We are looking forward to celebrating Book Week with this year’s theme, Read, Grow and Inspire. As shared previously, we are thrilled to welcome acclaimed authors, Louise Clark and Reece Clark to read to and inspire our students.

This year’s opportunity for students (and staff) to dress up in costume related to a book character of choice or connected to this year’s theme takes place on Tuesday 22 August. Start thinking about those costumes and, as always, we look forward to seeing the campus embrace this creative event!

‘A Flight Plan to Resilience: Guiding Your Little Pilot through Turbulence in Life’

Our termly parent session on Student Wellbeing will explore and focus on how to encourage the development of resilience in our children. Delivered again by our own expert team of Junior Campus School Counsellors, the session will explore the factors involved in how parents and carers can foster resilience, enhance independence, and allow controlled adversity for growth in children.

There will be some practical tips on how to equip children to handle setbacks, promote problem-solving, use assertive communication, and practise self-care. Our team will also cover skills on how to nurture emotional growth in children, sharing practical tools and strategies with you.

NSW Skiing Interschools

We extend our best wishes to students selected to represent Redlands next week in the 2023 NSW Snowsports Interschools Championships. Again, we recognise the commitment of these students and their families and look forward to hearing of their endeavours and recognising them in due course.

Correction – Class 4W

Last week, I incorrectly listed Class 4Y as the class who led our Jeans for Genes Day activities when it was in fact Class 4W. My apologies to Class 4W and I was grateful to some of the students mentioning my error to me in the playground this week which in turn allows me to publish this correction.

Road Safety

A reminder to parents and carers to help model the safe use of the pedestrian crossings on either side of our campus. This includes not parking directly next to the crossing in unauthorised zones which cause obstructions to visibility for pedestrians and is highly dangerous.

Book Week (21 – 25 August)

Tuesday 22 Dress Up day

Read Grow, Inspire is the 2023 them for Book Week. Each year since 1945 the CBCA has brought children and books together across Australia through Children’s Book Week. During this time schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers, teacher librarians and public librarians create colourful displays, develop activities, run competitions, and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. This year our Lucy Hill Librarian, Mrs Stokes along with Mrs Bertinshaw will be holding all sorts of fun challenges and games in class time and at lunchtime to celebrate reading.

Our students this year are welcome to come dressed up in their favourite book character or a costume that reflects the 2023 theme on Tuesday 22 August. This will be a P-6 day of celebration. There will be no parades nor is there any expectation, it is merely a fun day for the children. Simple is best! Can I quietly encourage that Marvel characters or Disney outfits are not worn as we would love to celebrate the beauty of literature.

STEAM Week

Our Prep STEAM week launched with a visit from Sydney Water’s WOW van, Science experiments at lunch with parent volunteers and lots more to come with STEAM inquiry-learning projects and our talk by our visiting scientist Dr Pirotta. TG, Kindy and Year 1 students explored the science of what can dissolve in water, what happens to matter we flush and why it’s important to take care of our water.  Students were fascinated to see how our Sydney rainfall is captured, stored in dams, filtered, and then transported to our homes via a network of pipes.  A fun Pacman style game led students through a wondering of how our water is treated and an interactive wonder wheel helped them explore how other places in the world get their water. During lunchtime our Year 2 students had the opportunity to take part in science experiments run by two Prep Parent volunteers. We would like to thank Catherine Grinham and Jennifer Mast for organising and running these engaging experiments. They will be visiting again early next week to run a session with our Year 1s.  We look forward to welcoming you to our Prep classrooms on Friday 18 August to share in your child’s STEAM learning and to celebrate National Science Week.

STEAM learning is designed to provide children with learning opportunities that combine fun hands-on activities with experiences that aid in their fundamental development. This balance of education and play naturally encourages young minds to ask questions, try new things, engage with their peers and explore the world around them. Some of the main benefits of STEAM experiences are;

  • Establishing a lifelong love of learning! The projects are designed to get the children excited about developing new skills by presenting these opportunities through fun and valuable experiences.
  • Building confidence and self-esteem. Many STEAM activities help kids learn how to use specific tools to achieve different tasks — like learning to use scissors to cut paper, or a mixing spoon to stir up ingredients. As young learners interact with simpler tools, they start to learn how to accomplish tasks on their own, improving their motor skills and supporting their self-esteem and confidence. This can also help them better assess situations and determine when they need to ask for help.
  • Developing critical thinking skills where learning goes beyond simply memorising facts and details. STEAM helps students to how to process information effectively. They learn how to hone their observational skills, find patterns, analyse results, and predict outcomes.
  • Nurturing creativity providing opportunities for children to be creative and encouraging them to use their imaginations can benefit every aspect of their development. They are encouraged to think outside of the box and see things from a different perspective.

We Love the Matildas!

What an exciting week to cheer on the Matildas and to support an Australian team making the semi-finals to a World Cup event in our very own city. Wednesday was a fun day to celebrate and support with all students from P-12 wearing supporter colours of green and gold, with a few brave red, white and blue flags flying proudly too! Such excitement beamed from the little Prep faces with a wonderful sense of pride and belonging. Coach Carter, Ms Longworth and Mr Price had super fun holding penalty shoot-out competitions at break time as well. Thanks to all our families for having fun with this day and encouraging the supporter spirit.

Today we had a few sad faces come through the door, but we were all so proud of the resilience the team demonstrated and as many Kindy students told me, ‘They were so brave’. Our Prep students are now getting excited to cheer the Matildas on for third place this weekend.

Big Hearts

Nurturing Emotional Well-being: Insights from the Counsellors

We’re excited to share with you the wonderful progress that’s been made in the second session of the Big Hearts Project, aimed at nurturing emotional wellbeing. During this session, the students actively engaged in enriching discussions and participated in engaging activities, all designed to support their growth and resilience:

Embracing Calmness with “The Candle and the Rose” Exercise

We kicked off the session with a soothing breathing exercise known as “The Candle and the Rose.” This exercise encourages children to imagine smelling a fragrant rose and then gently blowing out an imaginary candle. This simple practice helps them connect with their inner calm, fostering emotional balance.

Open Dialogue on Feelings and Strategies

The students had the opportunity to openly express their worries, sadness, or anger in a safe and supportive environment. Not only did they share their concerns, but they also offered valuable strategies they find helpful in navigating these emotions. This promotes healthy emotional expression and equips them with practical tools to manage challenging situations.

Unveiling the “Worry Brain” and the “Calm Brain”

Understanding their emotions is an essential part of a child’s growth journey. In this session, they learned about the differences between their “worry brain” and their “calm brain.” This awareness empowers them to recognise when their worries might be taking over and how to steer themselves back towards a state of calm.

Learning through Stories: “Nixie and Nimbo” Series

To illustrate the impact of excessive worry, the students watched a story from the “Nixie and Nimbo” series. This video highlighted a character whose worries became overwhelming. You can watch the story here: Link to the video. We highly recommend exploring this series with your child as it provides a fantastic foundation for meaningful conversations about emotions and coping strategies.

Afternoon Car Line

Prep parents are asked again to please join your Year Group car line at the appropriate time only.

  • Kindergarten -2.45pm
  • Year 1 – 3pm
  • Year 2 – 3.10pm

Sadly, some parents have returned to double parking, doing U-turns in front of children crossing the road, parking, and leaving cars in the no parking zones, parking over driveways, joining the car line from the wrong side of the road or pushing in at the driveway entrance. All these actions put our children, our community, and our staff at risk every day. It also is not fair for the many parents who adhere to the road rules and the structured pick-up system that is in place to help with traffic congestion.

A reminder that the car drop off time is from 8am only. The garage door is open for staff only to enter before 8am.

Thank you once again for your help with this.

I have been diving deep into a few podcasts recently and it has been great to listen to a number of different stories from not just successful sports people but also successful businessmen and women. ‘Pressure is a privilege’ is a mantra the New Zealand All Black Dan Carter speaks about, this mantra encapsulates a profound perspective on the role of pressure in the lives of teenagers involved in sport. For your athletes, pressure might seem intimidating, capable of inducing stress and anxiety. However, Carter’s assertion reframes pressure as an opportunity rather than a burden, he went onto say that the most successful people in the world live with pressure every day and it is a privilege to have this, if you have the right tools to overcome those moments that is where greatness is.

In the realm of sports, pressure arises from the expectations and responsibilities placed upon athletes. Teenagers engaged in competitive sports are fortunate to encounter such pressure early in life. It molds their character, fortifies resilience and nurtures the ability to perform under demanding circumstances. The weight of expectations teaches them the value of discipline, preparation and mental strength. Embracing pressure fosters growth. It fosters the development of essential life skills like decision-making, adaptability and composure. As adolescents, athletes learn to channel pressure into motivation, enhancing their performance on and off the field. Facing pressure also provides them with the chance to learn from their mistakes, a vital lesson in the pursuit of success. In essence, Carter’s words underscore the invaluable learning experience that pressure offers to young sports enthusiasts. By considering pressure as a privilege, teenagers can harness its transformative potential, enabling them to evolve into not only accomplished athletes but also well-rounded individuals equipped to tackle challenges beyond the realm of sports.

Next week will see a transition from Winter to Summer Sport, below is the training schedule for Week 6 only (there will only be 1st trials and some senior sports), All students in Year 7-10 will have an Activities Assembly on Thursday 24 August from 2:25pm – 3:20pm.

Football

It was fantastic to see so many of our Football teams competing in the Semi-Finals over the weekend. With 12 of 15 teams progressing to the semi-finals it was a massive day of Football with teams playing at venues all over Sydney. There were some very exciting games that came right down to the final minutes and a number of games finished with a penalty shoot-out. Well done to the following teams who have progressed to the Grand Finals this Saturday 12 August at Western Sydney Wanderers: 2nd Girls, Junior A Girls, 15B Boys, 13A Boys. The fixture details are available on Redlands Pulse, best of luck to the Redlands teams in the Grand Finals on Saturday! A further congratulations to the students who were named in the team of the week for the Semi-Finals!

Hockey

Congratulations to both of our Hockey teams who were playing in the Semi-Finals over the weekend. The Junior Girls were up first and after an amazing season they were hoping to secure a well-earned spot in the finals. After a very tight first half the team were able to get ahead in the second half and progress through to the final. The 1st Girls were up next against Oxley College and it was destined to be a close game after the teams have had competitive matches earlier in the season. Unfortunately Oxley were just too strong on the day and two early goals from Oxley saw the Redlands team unable to even out the score by the final whistle. We would like to wish the Junior Girls the best of luck this Saturday in the final!

It has been a fantastic Hockey season for both teams and we look forward to celebrating the season with the Hockey Community next Thursday 24 August!

Term 3 Upcoming Dates

For Term 3 upcoming dates and key events these can be viewed by selecting this link.

Sydney Swans AFLW Matches @ North Sydney Oval

All Redlands students are encouraged to attend the upcoming match for the Sydney Swans AFLW when they take on GWS Giants on Sunday 3 September at 3pm on North Sydney Oval. Tickets are free for children under 18 Years of age and would be great to not only support the Swans but also support one of our coaching staff, Montana Ham who plays for the Swans. Last year we had plenty of families turn up and support with players coming over to us in the stands to meet the Redlands students. The link to purchase tickets can be found here.

Montana Ham was the number one draft pick in the 2022 draft and nominated New South Wales in the state-based draft. Montana started playing football when she was just four years old and has played in four NAB League campaigns, being named best on ground in Vic Metro’s championship this season. She was also judged MVP for the National AFLW Academy side in their game against the U23 All-Stars. Coach Scott Gowans said: “Montana is an elite talent. She is a 180cm midfielder who can play forward as well. She loves contested footy, has clean hands and a strong work ethic. We will play Montana in various roles to suit the team’s needs. Fans can also expect to see her spend some time across the half-back line.

For those of you whose child is coached by Montana you may wish to show them this ‘day in the life of’ clip.

Don’t delay in securing some tickets as the local derby will ensure a great crowd.

Interested in Tee Ball

Manly Warringah Softball Association’s (MWSA) Teeball competition is for girls & boys aged 5+. Games are played at 8.30am Saturday mornings during Terms 4 & 1, with a break for the summer holidays. All games are played at one location – Abbott Road Diamonds, North Curl Curl.

MWSA is holding two free Come & Try Teeball Days next month: Friday 8 September, 4.30 – 6pm and Sunday 10 September, 2.00 – 4.00pm.

Please contact Janine Rolfe (Yr 6 & 7 Redlands parent) for further information: Janine@MWSA.com.au or 0410 601 077.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Sport Calendar

The sport calendar for Term 3 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2023 JS Sport Calendar

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Legally Blonde Auditions

Harvard’s beloved blonde takes the Redlands stage by pink storm in this fun, upbeat story of self-discovery. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances – this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal!

We will be holding auditions for Redland’s 2024 Senior Musical: Legally Blonde in Week 8! It would be criminal to miss the opportunity to go to Harvard Law as Elle Woods, or teach a class as the villainous Professor Callahan, or just have the time of your life in the Greek Chorus of the Delta Nu Sorority!

Auditions for Orchestra will be held in Week 9 for our superstar musicians.

All Audition Information can be Found Here

We can’t wait to see all the talent Redlands has to share. What? Like it’s hard?

Filmmaking – Extra Subject

Each week on various afternoons, filmmaking is offered for Years 5-12. Senior filmmaking takes place every Wednesday afternoon, our young filmmakers explore different aspects of film production: idea generation, scripting, storyboarding, sound design, editing and more. This year in particular we’ve been experimenting with genre and style, with projects ranging from sitcom scenes to reinterpretations of sci-fi drama classics.

The workshops provide a fun space for creatives to develop their skills behind the camera, and expand their understanding of spectacle, space and character. For the tech enthusiasts, the complexity of soundscapes and editing are a fantastic way to learn new skills. For the visual artists, camera work and cinematography open up new ways of framing the world. For those who just love movies – here’s a group of people who’d love for you to join in the action! Senior Film is open to all Secondary School students and runs Wednesday 3.20-5:00pm in the W Block, if you have any queries regarding joining, please contact the Drama email.

Drama and Theatre: Student of the Week – Billie Mears

Billie Mears’s attitude and commitment to Drama class, her peers and the end of year showcase are exceptional. She comes to class willing and able to try any idea given to her among sharing many of her own. She has bounds of energy and her performances are always engaging. She has been a tremendous help in the creative process of devising our end of year showcase bringing many imaginative ideas to the table. She works extremely well as part of an ensemble and always brings a smile to class. Billie is extremely excited to perform for her parents in her Jr acting showcase next term. Well done Billie! (Amber Virtue – Drama Tutor)

HICES Music Festival 2023

Some of our Yr 7-12 students had a wonderful time at HICES Music Festival. Running over four days and culminating in a spectacular performance at the Sydney Town Hall last night, our students certainly were worth watching – even if they did share the limelight with the Matildas!

The students enjoyed meeting like-minded students from other Independent schools who share their passion, and working under the expert guidance of music educators from across the state.

A big thank you goes out to Ms Nicole Roberts and Mr Mathew Owen, who accompanied our students and ensured their wellbeing throughout the camp.

Next year, HICES will run a Yrs 5-8 Camp, as well as Jazz Academy and Male Vocals that will be open to students in senior years.
