Issue 24 2022 Term 3 Week 5 - 18 Aug 2022

From the Principal

It was a pleasure to host another Junior Campus Open Morning this week and to have the opportunity to share what is special about Redlands. It was also wonderful to note how proud our Yr 2 and 6 tour guides were to show people around the School. Current Yr 11 students Jack Lazzarotto and Samantha Hely shared reflections of their time at the School since preschool and the myriad of activities they have enjoyed. One of Jack’s comments that struck me was his articulation of the benefit of learning and growing with different genders. It is always powerful to hear students and alumni articulate their views from a personal perspective and illuminating to note the links to educational research.

I have previously communicated my frustration with people and organisations selecting individual pieces of educational research to reinforce mythical statements in support of their position regarding coeducation and single-sex education. In this vein, I felt that you may be interested in a more balanced article recently written by Professor Garry Falloon, from the Macquarie University School of Education, which references significant meta-analysis of studies across 21 countries involving 1.6 million students . A quote from the paper, that aligns with Jack’s comment in his address was “the study also reported that mixing genders tends to demystify and normalise relationships between the sexes.”

It was inspiring to join over 100 students and numerous staff last Friday for the presentation by Professor Geraint F Lewis, from the University of Sydney, on cosmology, black holes, gravitational lensing and galactic cannibalism. The thought-provoking questions and engagement from the audience reflected the intriguing concepts presented and the mysteries still being explored. It was an honour to have someone of Professor Lewis’ standing and reputation attend Redlands to speak to the students.

The Science and STEAM Week celebrations across the whole school have enabled students to experience a wide range of interesting activities and to hear from a range of guest speakers including Dr Noushin Nasiri, Head of NanoTech Laboratory at Macquarie University School and wildlife scientist Dr Vanessa Piotta, who is presenting to Preparatory School students and parents tomorrow morning. I thank all staff involved for their dedication in providing such a rich array of learning opportunities and for promoting the importance of Science and STEAM.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to attend both the Friends of Group and Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) Meetings early this week. These groups continue to explore ways to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life and their support and guidance remains invaluable. Our committed and generous volunteer members highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands and we are ever grateful for their contribution. If you are looking to connect with our community groups then please reach out to the passionate and diverse experience of our class and year group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support Redlands families.

We were delighted to welcome parents, carers and prospective students to our Junior Campus Open Morning this week.  Our Prep and Junior tour hosts did a magnificent job in guiding our guests through the Junior Campus (bathed in glorious sunshine), whilst openly sharing their experiences as a Redlands student, and our talented chamber ensembles and junior voices charmed all with their wonderful performance of Viva La Vida.  A common thread in my discussions with visiting parents and carers was how impressive it was that our students were valued and known as individual learners and how they are challenged to develop and grow their unique passions and talents.

Thank you to our dedicated and passionate volunteers who continue to put their hand up in support of Spring Fair. Not long now until this much loved and highly anticipated community event.  To avoid waiting in queues on the day, pre-purchase wristbands and coupons here to receive a special discount. Further details on the Spring fair can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day, along with information on the wide range of parent and carer events that connect our community.

Redlands was thrilled to welcome back to campus alumni Emile Theau (Redlander 2014) who inspired curiosity among our Yr 6 students with a focus on Sustainability, Surfboards, Entrepreneurship and Innovation as part of STEAM Week. To read more of Emile’s incredible work in sustainable surf products along with an update on Science Week and the Class of 2022 Legacy Gift click here.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support this Term and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Celebrating Science Week

As Redlands has been celebrating Science Week this week, we reflected on the long, academic history of Science Education and community support to develop facilities supporting Science education. We have also reached out to our Alumni to come and share their experience with our students.

Science has been taught at Redlands since its opening in 1884, the first Yr 12 student graduated in Physics in 1887 and the first Science Room was built in 1908 for botanical and geological specimens collected in early field trips.

Since the first Science Room in the original Redlands House on Military Rd, science laboratories have been located in numerous buildings around the School. The Redlands Science program was given the prominence it deserved with the opening of Redlands’ first dedicated Science Block in 1967, originally called the Wyndham Building, refurbished and renamed the Liggins Atrium/Roseby Building in 2007 supported by donations from the Redlands community.

We are very fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong tradition of generously giving back to the School. It is through the generosity of previous families that current and future students are able to enjoy today’s Science facilities and resources.

Redlander on Junior Campus

What a fantastic start to STEAM Week! Redlands was thrilled to welcome back to campus Emile Theau (Redlander 2014) who inspired curiosity among our Year 6 students with a focus on Sustainability, Surfboards, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Emile is the winner of the HP Generation Impact Incubator and Ocean Impact Organisation Pitchfest 2021. He is the co-founder of Sine Surf, dedicated to reducing waste and emission in the surfing industry by inventing new ways to make sustainable surf products. He is currently working at the University of Sydney in the School of Chemistry as an Engineer on the nanotechnology startup Dewpoint Technologies using cutting edge nanosurfaces to passive cool and harvest dew from the atmophere.

We wish Emile all the best with his exciting endeavours!

Emotions

It has been an emotional couple of weeks. At the mid-point in the term, I want to acknowledge those members of our community who have had to identify and navigate some tricky situations of late. At Redlands, where learning is underpinned by explicit social and emotional skill development, we don’t shy away from our emotions and we are always impressed by how our young people grapple with, and manage, their emotions. It isn’t easy.

But perhaps I have been thinking about emotions more because of the great book I am currently reading. Research psychologist and founder of the Yale Centre for emotional Intelligence, Dr Marc Brackett’s book Permission to Feel uses RULER, an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning, in support of school communities. I really like the mood meter which comes as an app that can be downloaded to your phone and available whenever needed.

Recognising emotion

Understanding emotion

Labelling emotion

Expressing emotion

Regulating emotion

And then last night I went to a great talk with our Director of Digital Innovation, Mary-Lou O’Brien, by Dr Adam Fraser who, among a range of interesting and useful advice about how to be courageous through change, reminded us ‘don’t believe everything you think’ because our brains are not always our friends. It made me realise that the way we feel and the way we think doesn’t have to be our reality. We can regulate and reframe. With this in mind, I look forward to Yr 12 returning to school next week – we will use some of these recent lessons with our graduating students as they receive the return of their Trial Examinations and the accompanying feedback. It can be a time of high emotion and questioning of capacity, and even self, but what we know from our experience as educators is that, the discomfort that may be felt upon the return of examination results can be harnessed for positive change and improvement. If you have time to look up these two researchers and writers, or even read their books, I hope you’ll find them as useful as I have in navigating teenage emotion (and my own).

Science Week

Students, staff and parents have enjoyed the wonder and possibility of science this week, in a variety of ways across the campus.

The Dark Side of the Universe

The Science Department commenced Science Week with a talk on ‘The Heart of Darkness’ by Professor Geraint F Lewis (University of Sydney).  Professor Lewis’ research focuses on cosmology, gravitational lensing and galactic cannibalism, with the goal of unravelling the dark side of the universe. He has published over four hundred articles in astrophysics, and regularly speaks to varied audiences on cosmology and the nature of the universe.

Over 100 students across Yrs 7 to 11 attended the lunchtime presentation. Students were captivated as he presented an engaging summary of what we know and don’t know about black holes.

Crime Scene Investigation

On Tuesday lunchtime, students from all year groups were able to learn about the skills of forensic science and act as a CSI! Students learnt how to take finger prints, dust for prints and lift them from surfaces for analysis. They created ‘blood’ plaster patterns from various heights and used luminol to identify blood left at the scene. It was fantastic to see so many students take advantage of this great session and learn more about the practical applications of Science.

Active Learning

The Science Fair drew a crowd! Mr Bentley, our Head of Teaching and Learning (P-12) can be seen in the image below running across the Ooblek pool with James Morris (Yr 7). The Ooblek pool is simply made up of corn flour and water. The mixture then behaves as a non-Newtonian fluid – one that does not follow Newton’s laws of viscosity. Therefore, you can run across the Ooblek pool and come out with clean feet.

Beyond Blue

Redlands will participate in the Blackmores Running Festival on the 18th of September to raise money for Beyond Blue. Every $48 ensures a phone call, email, or webchat from those in need is answered by Beyond Blue staff. With three million people in Australia living with anxiety and depression and growing demand for Beyond Blue’s services, we’re running this year to raise vital funds and mental health awareness.

The run is fun for everyone, with a distance for beginners and experienced runners. Choose from the Blackmores Sydney Marathon, Blackmores Half Marathon, 10km Blackmores Bridge Run or 3.5km Blackmores Family Fun Run for a truly unforgettable experience. It is a challenging and memorable run, with 3 of the 4 distances finishing at the Sydney Opera House.

Please help us to support Beyond Blue by joining our team or donating here.

Senior Campus Cybersafety Seminar with ySafe

We are very pleased to host another Parent Seminar this term both via Zoom and in-person in the Learning Hub.

Greenlands Week

Next week, we will be holding the Redlands annual Greenlands Week, in which we will be focussing on sustainability and looking after our environment. This year, we are particularly focussing on our local environment, as whilst Australia has some of the world’s most incredible flora and fauna, we also have the highest extinction rate in the world. As Environment Captains for 2022, Jacob and I have decided to raise awareness and funds for the WWF’s Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital, an important project to ensure that the animals affected by bushfires, floods and deforestation are able to access lifesaving specialist medical services. To raise funds, we will be raffling off two great prizes – a koala encounter and a giraffe encounter at Taronga Zoo for 4 people each! Tickets will be available throughout next week.

There will also be a bake sale held on Friday lunch, so come along, enjoy some baked goods and support a worthy cause!

Dr Tessa Opie: Healthy Relationships and Sexuality Workshop 1 September

This week, students began the lead-in sessions in preparation for Dr Opie’s workshop with Yr 10 on Thursday 1 September. During the past 18 months, Redlands has been updating our PDHPE and student wellbeing relationships and sexuality curriculum. To support our school curriculum, Yr 10 will be involved in a workshop facilitated by the fabulous Dr Tessa Opie (In Your Skin) and Redlands teachers.

Grounded in current research, the workshop takes a sex positive approach being inclusive of all genders and sexual identities with a focus on harm reduction. Dr Opie’s approach is refreshing and informative, fun and realistic. Key topics will include current sexual and relationship trends with specific focus on relationship values and sexual rights. The workshop will run from 8:20am until 12:00pm.

The lead-in sessions started this week included the Safety Statement and Code of Conduct to support students in guidelines for the workshop.

Safety Statement: Workshops and presentations are conducted in a safe and positive space. Some of you will feel that topics are not relevant, they may bore you, some of you may feel uncomfortable. If you feel the need, you can take a moment out of the workshop room and someone will follow-up with you to make sure all is ok.

Code of Conduct:

  • Respect the talker. Everyone listens, everyone has a turn, everyone has the right to pass, you do not have to speak
  • Listen with an open mind and heart. Be aware of difference in opinions, background and experiences.
  • Trust that you will know what to say. You do not need to rehearse.
  • Just say enough. don’t rush, don’t hog the floor – we can learn through listening
  • No one is mentioned by name. Don’t use the names of known people or known situations. Only speak about your own experiences/observations.
  • What is said in the room stays in the room UNLESS something is said which indicates that you or someone else is unsafe.

Students have been provided the space and time to read over the Safety Statement and the Code of Conduct, to add any further items they want for their Tutor Group, to ensure they understand the guidelines for the day and feel encouraged to participate freely and comfortably. The lead-in sessions will continue over the next two weeks.

Oxford Program

“Annie and I, Ahnu, have been fortunate enough to recently attend a month-long academic program in Oxford, England, during which we both elected to study English Literature, as well as Art for Annie, and History for myself. This was a wonderful opportunity for us to explore our subjects beyond the school curriculum, and to meet people from countries all around the world. Living in an unfamiliar place and culture independently for the first time was simultaneously exciting and, at times, overwhelming, but with the support of friends and family, we quickly adjusted and had a great time for the month. Throughout the four weeks, we have spent our mornings reading and discussing literature from medieval to modern times; the afternoons sketching sculptures in museums, and visiting colleges around Oxford; the evenings talking and relaxing with friends. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience, and have come away with both new knowledge and new friendships. All in all, we are deeply grateful to our families who made this possible for us, to teachers and friends who supported us along the way, and, of course, a sincere thank you to Annie for sharing in this experience together.”

ARTICLE – Stress & Stress Management: Pre-teens & Teenagers

Key points

  • Stress is a response to external challenges, like deadlines or difficult decisions.
  • Stress is normal, and it can sometimes be good.
  • Too much stress can be overwhelming. It can make it hard for pre-teens and teenagers to enjoy life.
  • Help teenagers manage stress by listening and talking, spending time together, and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices.

About Stress

Stress is a response to external challenges, pressures or events. These might include things like looming deadlines, difficult decisions or health scares.

If you’re feeling stressed in these situations, your body will let you know. For example, your heart rate might go up, your breathing might get faster and your muscles might tense up.

Stress is a normal part of life. Everyone experiences stress, and some stress is OK. It can get you ready for action and give you the motivation to get things done. For example, feeling stressed about an upcoming test can motivate your child to study. Or knowing they have to get to the bus on time can help your child get ready in the morning.

Signs of Too Much Stress

Although some stress is OK, too much stress can be overwhelming. It can interfere with sleep, thinking and learning, and it can get in the way of your child enjoying life.

When pre-teens and teenagers have too much stress, they might have:

  • tense muscles, headaches, a tight jaw, teeth-grinding, a racing heart and sweaty palms
  • trouble sleeping
  • low energy, tiredness or exhaustion
  • the feeling of being on edge
  • difficulty concentrating
  • loss of motivation
  • the feeling of being overwhelmed.

When your child has too much stress for a long time, this can be bad for your child’s physical and mental health. It can also lead to anxietyanxiety disorders and depression.

Stress can look and feel similar to anxiety. Anxiety is the worry, apprehension or dread that something bad is going to happen or that you can’t cope with a situation. Anxiety can happen even if there isn’t a challenging situation or event. When you understand the difference between stress and anxiety, it can help you work out what your child is feeling and how to help.

Causes of stress for pre-teens and teenagers

Many situations can cause stress for pre-teens and teenagers. These include:

  • schoolwork, decisions about subjects, exams and pressure to do well
  • relationships with friends and romantic relationships
  • life changes like leaving school, moving house, going to university or getting a job
  • too many things to do, and feeling unprepared or overwhelmed by tasks
  • exciting things, like trying a new sport
  • family conflict
  • big decisions, like deciding whether to talk about something sensitive or important
  • lack of sleep.

Stress management for pre-teens and teenagers

Stress management is important for pre-teen and teenage mental health and wellbeing. You can help your child learn to manage their stress.

Acknowledge your child’s stress

If you notice that your child is stressed, let them know that you’ve noticed and that you’re there to support them. Responding to your child with warmth and compassion can help your child be kinder to themselves. When teenagers treat themselves with self-compassion, it can reduce the effects of stress and help your child ‘bounce back’ during or after difficult times.

Work out what’s causing the stress

If your child knows what’s causing the stress, it can be easier for them to deal with it. You can help by getting your child to write down all the things they’re doing. Then they can think about how they feel about these things. For example, do some of them make your child feel tense or stop them from sleeping?

Remember that good things can be stressful too, and stress can also come from having too much to do.

Work out how to handle stressful things

You could start by helping your child prioritise which things need attention first, and which can wait.

Some stressful things can be changed. For example, if your child gets stressed because they’re always running late in the morning, they might be able to reduce the stress by getting ready the night before or waking up earlier.

Some stressful things can be prepared for. For example, if your child is very concerned about an upcoming exam, you can help them prepare by working out a study timetable together.

Some stressful things can’t be changed, but they can be talked about. For example, if your child is troubled about your family’s financial situation, listening and talking about their concerns might help to reduce the stress they feel.

Encourage a healthy lifestyle

Healthy lifestyle choices can often help your child handle stress or reduce its effects. Here are some ideas for your child:

  • Be physically active. Physical activity and exercise improve mood and can give your child a sense of achievement, as well as boosting their physical health. Exercise also burns off the ‘stress hormone’ cortisol and can help the body relax.
  • Eat good food. Eating well can help your child feel good, strong, energetic, alert and able to concentrate.
  • Relax and unwind, especially before bed. This might be going for a walk, reading a book, having a relaxing bath, listening to some music or doing breathing exercisesmuscle relaxation exercises or mindfulness exercises.
  • Sleep well. Pre-teens and teenagers need about 8-10 hours of sleep a night, and getting enough good-quality sleep can help your child feel more alert, positive and energetic. Not getting enough sleep is one of the biggest causes of stress in teenagers.
  • Avoid alcohol and other drugs, including caffeine. Although older teenagers and adults often use alcohol and other substances to cope with stress, these substances make the symptoms of stress worse and can lead to other problems.

You probably feel stressed sometimes too. You can be a stress management role model for your child by being kind to yourself, trying to deal with the causes of your stress, and making healthy lifestyle choices.

If stress gets too much: getting help

If your child is often overwhelmed by stress and is finding it difficult to cope with everyday things, they might benefit from extra support.

Your child could start by:

  • talking to their GP
  • seeing the school counsellor or a psychologist with training in child and adolescent mental health
  • talking to a spiritual leader or elder
  • talking to a youth worker if your child goes to a local youth centre
  • calling Kids Helpline on 1800 551 800.

Respectful Language

This week in Yr 8, we have been considering the power of language and its affect on our peers. In today’s world, it is becoming apparent that many young people are being influenced by the language around them. It is common for them to hear derogatory terms or offensive language on the streets, on social media channels, streaming services and in some forms of modern music. Proliferating the use of such language can sometimes normalise, glamorise and sanitise their impact, taking their meaning out of context. Words can be misconstrued to be hurtful, racist, homophobic, mysogynistic or even discriminatory, and the casual explanation ‘it’s just a joke’ the all too frequent excuse. Using disrespectful language is considered socially unacceptable, and if not addressed early, can become a serious problem.

The use of derogatory language or the act of swearing at someone, or about someone, is actually a form of verbal violence. It transgresses the usual rules of social interaction by impinging on an individual’s self-image and sense of dignity. Therefore, Redland’s enforces a zero tolerance policy when it comes to such language. Parents and carers also need to play an important role in enforcing this approach by proactively monitoring what their children are viewing or being exposed to and discussing the use of words or their origin. This can help prevent inappropriate or disrespectful language being used in the classroom, school yard or other situations.

Whilst some students may use swearing or derogatory terms for attention seeking purposes, others may use it simply because they are still learning how to moderate their language. As young people develop their language skills, it is important for them to have a clear understanding of the impact of their choice of words on others and how their words can impact other people’s perspective of them – an important and essential skill to learn as they progress in their personal and professional development.

Redlands Concussion Management

With Winter Sport in full swing there have been some instances where students have received head knocks. On these occasions it is very important that students and families comply with the Redlands Concussion Management Policy. A student with symptoms after a head knock should receive medical advice. Symptoms  can be subtle or not immediately recognisable and can be as small as a headache.

The current principles of concussion management involve rest during the acute period post injury (48hrs for adolescents), followed by a gradual increase in cognitive activity then a graduated return to physical activity. Redlands utilises the standard Return to Play strategies found in the ISA Concussion Protocol, Rugby Union Australia Concussion Procedure and the Australian Government’s Concussion in Sport Australia Position Statement.

The graduated return to all school activities takes a minimum of 19 days after all symptoms and signs have disappeared. Progression is dependent on remaining symptom-free throughout. If symptoms reoccur at any stage, the student drops back to the previous stage for a period of 24 hours and must be symptom-free at that stage prior to attempting the next stage again. If symptoms are persistent at any stage medical review is essential.

It is important that students follow the Redlands Concussion Management Policy to allow them to have a reduced cognitive load and therefore prevent further injury to the brain. Please notify me by email if your child sustains a head knock or is diagnosed with a concussion (whether this be at school sport or during another  activity outside of school). Should you wish to familiarise yourself with the policy it is available on Pulse, under Key Information and School Polices.

STEAM Week

STEAM week launched with the theme of how to use our passion and knowledge to link our learning to find local solutions to global problems. Our classrooms have been humming with creativity as students ideate, design and rapidly prototype solutions to their learning linked UN Goal, using a mix of technology and recycled materials to model their solutions.

Year 6 students are investigating solutions to the plastics problem and we were excited to host Redlands alumni, Emile Theau (Class of 2014), who shared his start up journey as a ‘Generation Impact Incubator’ winner with his company, Sine Surf. A chemical engineering and nanotechnology graduate from The University of Sydney, Emile shared how he combined his passion for sustainability and design with his knowledge of engineering and nanotechnology to bring sustainability to surfing. The students were particularly interested to learn that it took 22 iterations to develop this board.

Nano is our word of the week after talks this week from our special guest speaker, Dr Noushin Nasiri, the Head of the Nanotech Laboratory at Macquarie University. From her opening question on, “How tiny is nano?”, she held our students spellbound with the magic of science and nanotechnology. Dr Nasiri shared how her curiosity as a child about the natural world led her on a learning journey of investigations and to her work in technology today. Dr Nasiri was excited to take part in her first ever student-led Q&A panel led in two parts by Ruairi MacLochlainn, Melanie Korolev, Calvin Mcnab, Molly Crompton, Oliver To, Isha Gupta, Joanna O’Keefe and Christian Bush. She was very impressed by our students’ passion and knowledgeable questions and excited about this next generation of STEAM researchers.

My thanks are extended to our staff who have led and designed the range of learning experiences for the Junior School students this week, most ably led by Ms Anagnostu, our eLearning Coordinator.

Book Week 2022

We are all set for Book Week next week and are delighted to have acclaimed author, Mark Greenwood, launch the week by speaking to each year group tomorrow.

We will again have a dress up theme on Friday 26 August and this year’s theme is “Dreaming with eyes open” so students are encouraged to dress up as something or somebody they dream of being.

The students have been introduced to the books on the Children’s Book Council shortlist and explored the Book Week theme in their library lessons with Mrs Wiebe.

1st Place in NSW Language Championships

Congratulations to our Junior School Spanish students who answered over 140,000 language questions during the Education Perfect NSW Language Championships which took place over 48 hours from Wednesday 10 to Friday 12 August.

This incredible effort meant that Redlands once again came 1st in the State for Spanish out of 129 schools and 4th overall out of 367 schools.

Special congratulations to the following students who achieved awards:

Duty of Care Reminders: Drop Off Times and Contact Details

Please be reminded that duty staff commence supervision at 8am each morning and whilst we know that some students might arrive a few minutes earlier due to bus timetables or other factors, I am concerned that students have been found wandering around the campus as early as 7.15am having been dropped off.

A reminder too that if parents are going away, please ensure that the class teacher (and the nurse if relevant) are aware of this in the event that we need to contact someone in an emergency.

Thank you for your support in these two important child safety matters.

Student-led Conferences

I am grateful to our teachers who have guided student-led conferences with families this week and particularly congratulate the stuents themselves on their preparation and presentation in these conferences.

Term 4 After School Sports Program Registration Update

Thank you for your feedback as we move to adjusting our systems to accommodate a fairer and time friendly registration process for our after-school sports program.

As part of our new upgraded parent digital experience, Term 4 Prep After-School Sport will move to our new Sports and Activities platform via the Redlands Pulse page.

This also means the way families select their preferences will change.

Please note the following:

  • Prep After-School Sport Expressions of Interest will open 10am Wednesday 24 August and close 10am Wednesday 31 August.
  • There will be a two-preference option. Please do not opt for the same sport twice as the system will not respond to that.
  • The term 4 sports on offer are football (On Monday only), basketball and tennis.
  • Parents can access the form online using their new Redlands parent login here
  • This form is an expression of interest and is not first come, first served.  Allocations will be prioritised for students who have not yet had a chance to participate in an after-school sport program this year.
  • You will receive an email confirming your child’s place by Monday 5 September.

The below screen shots should help you navigate the process. The above link will take you directly to the page below.  Students are attached to the parent shown at the top of the page.  As a parent, please select which child they want to select for.

A Few Messages

Our lunchtime wellbeing activities are going well and our student leaders are doing an incredible job of leading most of them. Just a reminder that Pokémon Cards are only permitted on Mondays for Years 1 and 2 children who intend to go to the lunch time activity, cards are only permitted inside the classroom.

If your child attends after school sport on a Monday or Friday, please read the behaviour expectation guide that our providers use. This helps provide us with a structure that ensures the safety and wellbeing of all students who attend. It is important that all students, whether they are in Redlands House, K ,1, and Year 2 understand that the sport session needs to be a safe space for everyone as well as a place where the school value of respectful relationships is demonstrated. If you do receive a message about an incident, we do encourage you to please come and talk to the coaches at pick up time.

Netball – ISA Finals

What a day on Saturday at Netball Central! Excitement was in the air and Redlands had 12 teams playing in the netball finals. We started off with a bang, with the Inter A and Junior B teams both recording strong wins to progress through to the Finals this weekend, the Inter A team coming down to the wire holding off a fast finishing Chevalier College 29-26, where the Jnr B team cruised through the last quarter to take out Barker College 18 41 – 35. Unfortunately the next time slot was not so kind, with the 1st VII taking on defending ISA Champions Oakhill College 1, with a quick start the girls went goal for goal against the much fancied Oakhill team, and the game progressed Oakhill took charge, in the end running away with the match 32-55. The Snr 2nds have had a great year this year, dropping a handful of games to one of those to Oakhill College 3, this game was tight, with the lead changing many times throughout each quarter, there were shots dropping from all over the circle from both teams which made the game even more exciting, unfortunately Oakhill had a few more legs in the end taking advantage in the last quarter and winning 27-33. The Junior C team was in a real nail bitter (the first of many on Saturday), this team has come on leaps and bounds this year and they have been a great team to watch! Against a very tough opponent in St Andrews, this game was going to be close, and close it was with the scores tied up 30sec left, unfortunately St Andrews had possession and were able to score to take the match 16-17!

The Inter Bs then took on Barker College 10, this was one for the ages! The flows of this game were intense, Barker could get up, then Redlands, then Barker again, with 3 minutes to go Barker looked to have control up by 3, but the Redlands girls dug deep and clawed back to 33 all and force the game to extra time, 5 minutes each way! Unfortunately is wasn’t to be, with Barker taking the match 33-35 and most of the parents lost their finger nails!

The Inter C team were following next, and control this game from start to finish, some slick goal shooting saw the girls jump out to an early lead, and they didn’t look back beating St Pauls Grammar 3, 55-35. The Inter F team unfortunately had a tough loss, going down to Barker College 15, 7 – 38. The excitement didn’t end there with Redlands featuring in 4 games during the last timeslot, the Jnr F team have shown great teamwork all year, and this wasn’t any different, with a strong 18 – 14 win over Central Coast Grammar 8. The Inter D team had a tough match against Central Coast Grammar 5, this game again was very close with CCGS taking control in the last quarter to win 27-32.

The Jnr D team have been having so much fun this year and it can be seen each week on the court, with Saturday being no different, in their match against St Andrew’s 13, they look cool, calm and collected, there was slick interplay between the mid court and the shooters and the defenders seems to be 6 foot taller than the opposing, pulling in rebounds and intercepts like nothing else! They book their spot in this weekend’s finals with a 38-12 victory! And finally the Jnr E team, unfortunately went down in what can only be described as a heart stopper, the girls took a 1 goal lead with 2 minutes to play and tried to hold on for victory, unfortunately Barker had other ideas with some strong defence managing to secure a rebound, and go down to court to tie things up, then from the centre pass they were quick to score again and took at 1 goal lead with 30sec to go, the Redlands girls fought hard and looked to tie the game up, unfortunately the final whistle went just before Redlands were able to get their final shot.

I would like to thank the following netballers who played multiple games on Saturday to help when teams were short, Kira & Sophie from the Jnr B team who stayed and helped the Inter Bs, Juliet, Saffron & Syrah who come early to play for the Inter B team and then played a full game with no subs for the Inter C team, and Cassidy who halfway through here Junior D game left and filled in for the Inter D team so they could have 7 players.

This weekend the Finals will be at Genea Netball Centre (Netball Central) again, please ensure you leave adequate time to get to the venue with traffic, all players should arrive 30minutes prior to their game starting.

Inter A vs. Barker College 10 – Court 1 – 9:00am

Inter C vs. Barker College 11 – ShowCourt – 12:00pm

Football – ISA Finals

Well done to all 8 teams who competed in the ISA Football semi-finals over the weekend. We had some great results and some very close games which has resulted in four teams progressing to the ISA Finals this Saturday at Western Sydney Wanderers FC. Congratulations and best of luck to the following teams in the finals this weekend: 1st Girls, Junior A Girls, Junior Blue Girls and 2nd Boys. We encourage other members of the Football program to come out and support our teams in the final!

It’s not too late to register for the End of Season Football Presentation night to celebrate the season with your teams and coaches. The celebration will take place on Tuesday 6 September at Dee Why RSL. You can buy your tickets now by clicking here.

Hockey – ISA Final

It was fantastic to see both our 1st & 2nd Girls Hockey teams in action on Saturday, playing some of their best Hockey to date. The 2nd Girls were up first against Central Coast Grammar School. The team knew it would be a tight game given they had a draw with Central Coast two weeks earlier. CCGS had a great start to the game with an early goal, putting pressure on the Redlands team early. The Redlands girls stuck together and managed to get a goal of their own late in the second half. With just minutes to go, a breakaway from Amynta saw her with a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, managing to put a second goal on the board securing a 2-1 win and a spot in the finals. The 1st Girls were up against Oxley College, with Oxley having the advantage the first two times these teams met earlier the year. With the game remaining scoreless for the majority of the game, a number of short corner opportunities for the Redlands Girls saw the team leading 1-0 with just minutes to go. In a nail-biting game it was a fantastic achievement for our Redlands Girls to make it through to the Division 1 ISA Hockey Final.

Wishing our girls Hockey teams the best of luck this Saturday in the finals!

The End of Season Hockey Presentation will be held on Thursday 25 August. It’s not too late to get your tickets, please click here if you would like to attend.

Tennis – ISA Finals

We would like to congratulate all ISA finalists for some great matches over the weekend. ISA Team 8 was able to take a clean win for Redlands in the first five matches and should be incredibly proud of their efforts – especially as a new Year 7 team! ISA Team 2, 5 and 6 put up a great fight but ultimately lost to their opponents. ISA Team 2 in particular put up a tremendous fight against Oakhill 2 with a close game – losing in game points at 4 sets all. Within the Internal Competition, a congratulation goes out to unexpected winners Team Green (8am session) and Team Emerald (10am session), defeating the previously undefeated Team Blue and Team Orange in close matches (2 sets to 1).

We hope all players have enjoyed the Winter Tennis Season this year, and as we move into the last week of training, we welcome all players and parents to this weekend’s end of season Redlands Cup! Held at Cammeray (for ISA players) from 8am – 12pm and Lane Cove (for Internal Competition/Development Squad) starting from 9am – 11am, we will run a knockout singles tournament (Cammeray) and round robin doubles tournament (with parents!) (Lane Cove). This will be followed by a short presentation for the finalist players of last weekend. An Engage notice will provide more details before the end of the week.

We hope to see you in Summer Tennis next week and if not next year’s Winter Season!

Water Polo

The Inter Water Polo teams are continuing to improve with each week they play, their season will continue into the summer season (with players only playing games and not having training), the last Thursday training for Water Polo will be Thursday 18 August, with summer sport starting in Term 3, Week 6.

Rugby

In a brilliant round of competitive Rugby, Central Coast Grammar travelled down the M1 to face Redlands on our home fields of Macquarie Sport. All games were played to the highest level of sportsmanship and the atmosphere in and around the fields was amazing.

Our incredible Under 13s started the day off, continuing their undefeated season as they smashed through a Central Coast side who, to that point, had only suffered one narrow loss previously. In what is beginning to become a familiar routine, the combination of Durrant, Hindmarsh and Reeves in the backline was devastating, putting teammates into space and converting any opportunity to score. The opposition were willing, their defensive efforts matching some very strong runners in attack but our team was up to the task in every aspect of the match.

Special mention must go to Rupert Perry who, against CCGS, personified what this wonderful team is about. Simply put, Rupert was everywhere. In defence, he was relentless, chopping down the CCGS players and spoiling their front foot ball. In attack, his ball carrying led to two tries that proved to be enough to win the match. I could not be more excited for what is to come for Rupert. We can only hope that he continues to improve and, a long way down the line, gets to run out alongside his brother Max in a 1st XV jersey.

With one more game to go and an undefeated season on the line, this entire team should be commended for their efforts. Their attitude and willingness to learn and develop is a key reason for their successes across all of their matches.

In the other matches, our Under 14s and our Under 15s played highly competitive matches against CCGS. In the 14s, Digby Scott and Finn O’Sullivan were standouts. Finn continues to become one of our most brilliant attacking threats in the program and seeing him in full flight is a brilliant sight to behold. For Digby, this season was all about continuing to develop as a playmaker, leading his team around the park in attack and organising the defence. Against CCGS, especially across the first half, Digby really got into his rhythm and was putting on some wonderful short passes for his backline.

Our Under 15s played a modified match with a number of our Under 16s backing up into the team. This was a brilliant opportunity to see some of the combinations we will see in later years with players like James Stuart and Alex Ramsay working in tandem in both attack and defence. For James Stuart in particular, his match was fantastic. There is no better trainer than James in our program and his efforts on and off the field are never in question. In the first ten minutes of his match against CCGS he made twelve carries and nine tackles. That is incredible. James is a player that will form the backbone of a powerful Redlands 1stXV forward pack and I cannot wait to see the levels he can push himself to across another preseason.

I would like to again commend all of the program for their attitude on the day. CCGS went out of their way to thank us for the respect and atmosphere that Redlands created and this is a credit to our program, the students along with the parents and carers who all came out to watch.

Lastly, we must make a special mention to the Year 7 Year Advisor Ms Sarah Matthews, who travelled out to watch her cohort on the weekend. Her cheering from the sidelines was infectious and whilst she cannot take all of the credit for the win, deserves a special praise from our program.
