Community Update

We trust you remain safe and well.

This week I had the pleasure of checking in with some of our alumni community to ensure they were tucked away safely, in good health and supported in their local community through family, friends or perhaps government services. It was a real treat to chat with these cherished Redlanders who attended the School more than 50 years ago. In sharing their lockdown experiences, I was glad to hear they were all in good health with a positive spirit … just missing the regular social connections they have with their loved ones and each other.  If you are looking to connect with our community for support then please reach out to us here at the School or the passionate and diverse experience of our class and year group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups who support Redlands families.

It was a pleasure to attend the Prep School Parent Contact Group (PCG) Meeting through Zoom this week. There was lots of talk and excitement around the upcoming trivia event. With the Tokyo Olympic Games now complete and the Paralympics on the horizon, we invite those yet to register to join in the Olympic fun of the Redlands Family Trivia Night to held via Zoom from 5.30pm on Sunday 15 August.  Registration closes tomorrow evening so don’t miss out by clicking HERE to Go for Gold with your family!

Each year the graduating class at Redlands celebrate and acknowledge their Redlands education with a Legacy Gift. The Legacy Gift provides the cohort with a unique opportunity to thank the School for its support, encouragement and the opportunities offered while studying at Redlands.  To read more on this important and noble cause, check out the Foundation section.

A reminder that all COVID-19 related communications to parents and other relevant information is posted on the COVID-19 Page of Redlands Pulse. Our ICT team are also available to provide remote technical support to assist students (and parents) and can be contact at isupport@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

From The Principal

It is inspiring to note what can be achieved when we collectively come together as a school community and support our students in important fundraising initiatives. Ari Abe-Apostolou’s (5R) personal video message encouraging us all to support the recent Jeans for Genes Day struck a powerful chord, with the current amount of funds raised totalling $8,894, the largest amount from any organisation. My thanks to all members of the community for your significant support.

Having joined in several Zoom sessions with staff and students this week, it further reinforced the resilience of our students and how they have continued to adapt to Remote Learning and how staff are continuing to explore creative ways to engage students in their learning. Highlights this week included Preparatory School students sharing artwork that they had completed at home, full of colour and unique perspective. Hearing students read confidently and present to their cohort in a new medium was but one example of how they have risen to the challenge.

With our Yr 12 Trial Examinations, starting next week, now happening online, I have been most impressed at how our staff have once again pivoted quickly to provide the best experience possible for students, which will support them with valuable feedback prior to their final examinations. In Zoom meetings this week we reinforced how proud we are of the Class of 2021, for the way they have worked through this period, having also been impacted during 2020 when in Yr 11. They remain focused on making the most of the opportunity and throughout have been looking out for each other and concerned for all students.

Our Sports Department created a wonderful opportunity for our Redlands community to enhance their fitness during this lockdown period with the Redlands Olympic Challenge that ended last weekend. Congratulations to the students and parents representing Roseby who claimed Gold with 9079km, reaching Tokyo last Friday at 7.19pm. Students and parents from Dumolo won Silver with 8737km, arriving at Tokyo last Saturday at 10.54am and those from McDouall won Bronze with 6242km, achieving 79% of the distance to Tokyo.

Continuing with the Olympic Games theme, the RPFA has continued to explore opportunities to bring the community together and following positive feedback last year, by popular demand, the Redlands Online Family Trivia Night will be held this Sunday from 5.30 – 7.00pm. Families can book HERE with more details available on the RFPA page of Note Day. Bookings close tomorrow evening, so please register now.

My thanks to all parents and carers for your ongoing support and encouragement during this time. Your messages and feedback are greatly appreciated.

Foundation

This year I had the privilege to work with the Yr 12 cohort again to identify and implement ideas to raise funds for their Legacy gift. When we first met in Term 1 for the team morning tea I was overwhelmed, not only by how many of them were interested but also by their passion and enthusiasm they showed towards this project.

During the process when I had numerous opportunities to get to know them, I was impressed by their strong determination, passion and team spirit to achieve their goals and also their care to leave something meaningful behind after they leave the school gates.

I would like to wish them all the best for their Trial Exams starting online next week.

Message from Yr 12 Students to our Redlands community

2021 has certainly been another year to remember! As a student cohort, we have built strength, determination and resilience. We are grateful for the supportive community of families, staff and Alumni that we are a part of. However long each of us has been connected to Redlands, our time has been memorable and equipped us well to head off into the world at the end of this year.

Our Gift, Our Legacy

To celebrate our time here, and thank the School for its support, encouragement and the opportunities offered to us as a Year Group, we are proud to announce the Class of 2021 Legacy Gift.

We have decided to contribute the funds raised to two significant initiatives – the means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund and sustainability initiatives at Redlands.

Why we have chosen to support means-tested scholarships

The Redlands Scholarship Fund provides important support for many students who might not otherwise benefit from the excellent educational opportunities which we were offered. Using our Legacy Gift to help fellow young people gives us a great sense of pride. We know we are contributing to something that will make a lifelong difference. Importantly, this year’s Scholarship Appeal honours Ms Oxley, who many of us remember from our early years at Redlands.

Why we have chosen to support sustainable initiatives

Our cohort, conscious of our place in the world, understand the threats of our rapidly changing climate and habitat loss we see around us and we have a desire to act. For this reason, a portion of the Legacy Gift from Class of 2021 will be reserved for future sustainability and environmental initiatives at Redlands.

How you can support us in reaching our goal

From our Movie Night and Spirit Fair earlier this year, we have raised $3,200 and $15,200 respectively from direct donations to the Scholarship Fund. Our final fundraising activity before we enter exams this month, is a memorable Class of 2021 Redlands Tea Towel and Tote Bag designed by our cohort and selected staff. Each of us has contributed a drawing to represent ourselves creating a vibrant tapestry rich with the varied personalities of our cohort.

We now invite the entire Redlands community to support us in our final fundraising efforts. Please join us by purchasing one or more of our Class of 2021 portrait tea towels and tote bags, or contribute directly to the Scholarship Fund.

DONATE NOW

Thank you for your generous consideration and we look forward to sharing the results of this important initiative with you as the year unfolds.

With best wishes,

On a Positive Note…

The weather is good. People are prioritising their daily walks and the opportunity to soak up the sun. It’s great to see Yr 12 students sitting in the sun on their Zoom lessons, or a palm tree (a real one) through the window of someone sitting at their desk in a Zoom meeting. In many ways, we are very lucky – there are very few cases in the LGAs in which we live, we have a tight-knit community on whom we can lean and find support, and we have opportunities to talk, share and be well. Yes, we are living in challenging times, and there is a sense of loss, of what could have been. This week, one of our Yr 12 students, Alex Holtheuer, reminded us during a Yr 12 Zoom catch up, that’s it’s also a time where we can experience of sense of opportunity. Given the shifting landscape for our most senior students, Alex’s perspective was particularly mature and positive. We can’t change what’s happening, but we do have autonomy over our emotional response to it. Our young people look to us to see how we are reflecting our distress and also how we are demonstrating tolerance. We can be a stabilising influence. We cannot change the situation, but, we can model an appropriate coping response and be a support at the same time. So, it seems, can our Yr 12 students. I continue to be impressed by the reflective and optimistic responses of the 2021 cohort and know this has been significantly shaped by how their parents have modelled and supported them through this time.

Last Friday’s Jeans for Genes Day was a wonderful success across the Redlands community. We raised over $8,000 for this important charity – in only one day! Congratulations to all involved because your input has made a significant impact on the lives of others.

Week 6

Whilst always a priority, wellbeing forms a large part of our agenda next week, for both students and staff.

We will begin the week with a Student Survey, designed to elicit their responses to the experience of Remote Learning. This data will enable us to engage in further adjustment to our Remote Learning program and also provide a pulse check for the student community.

On Wednesday, a Zoom-Free day for students and staff means they can learn/work at their own pace, in a more independent way. The Connections Check-Ins scheduled for Wednesday afternoon will also provide an opportunity for community building and further emphasise our focus on supporting the wellbeing of all; students, staff and families. We hope that if you are a parent of a student in Yr 7-11 you will take the time to spend 5-minutes with your child and their Tutor to check in and connect.

Our staff will also be engaging in some wellness time next week. On Monday afternoon, staff across the Redlands campuses will take some time out, during our scheduled meeting time which occurs after the school day has finished. Ms Katie-Louise Clinton and Ms Marita Jansons, our wonderful Deans of Students, have invited us to get out into the fresh air, take some exercise and then share this via a 5-second video. We look forward to sharing this with the students in the near future, as a way of modelling and supporting them to effectively cope with the restrictions posed by the lockdown.

And then on Friday afternoon next week, (a time we have observed students are most fatigued), we have incorporated some additional Zoom-Free Time for both students and staff. Students should ensure they have completed their learning activities for the week before they switch off, move outside and connect – this might be with a friend on a walk (socially distanced of course), with nature, or with themselves, through a mindfulness activity such as meditation.

The Week 6 Timetable can be found here.

Essential Worker?

If you are sending your child to school next week because you are an essential worker, please complete this registration survey to log their attendance.

Week 6 also brings with it the Trial Examinations for our Yr 12 students. Our IB students begin on Monday and our HSC students begin on Wednesday. The Trial Examinations last for around 11 days and this year, our Yr 12s sit these exams at home. At Redlands, we value the Trial examinations because they are a significant stepping stone to the Final HSC and IB Examinations.

Why are they so important?

  • They provide an examination experience similar to that of the HSC for Yr 12 students
  • The Trials are the same length as those in the HSC
  • The Trials offer similar questions to those encountered in the HSC
  • The Trials enable students to receive feedback – to identify where their strengths lie and the areas for further development
  • The period after the Trials gives students the opportunity to work alongside their teacher to develop further, to fill gaps in knowledge, to extend skills, to refine, to deepen their understanding and to further apply knowledge against other exam questions
  • Physically sitting the Trials provides students with the experience of assessing their own personal capacity – they identify how they manage under pressure, how they manage the reading time, how they manage with the noise of others around them and how they manage their time across a range of questions in one exam paper. They have an experience of how they respond to a question that really throws them, how they respond to an easy question (do they overwrite or underwrite?). All of these experiences give them data on themselves which they can consider and reflect upon after the exam, so that they can course-correct if need be, prior to the final HSC and IB Examinations.

We send our Yr 12 students the very best of wishes next week. They are well prepared and want to show us what they know and what they can do. We already know how amazing they are, how talented and skilled. We are confident they will find this experience a valuable one.

Three Messages from the Roseby Library

Our Coordinator of Library, Bronwyn Curtis, and the Roseby Library staff offer the following support to students and families at this time:

  • Do not worry about overdue books – students can return them eventually when school resumes.
  • Meet SORA – our new method of digital borrowing! Students can download the free SORA app from the appstore. Follow the instructions!

Log In: Student Number
Password: sora

Students can then access the collection, choose a book and when they finish reading, the book is automatically returned to the online library – like magic!

Resilience, perseverance and grit all are qualities we need as we face the various situations in our lives. Yet they are hard to teach and hard to learn. Much like overcoming fear, these are developed by going though difficulties.

I remember when the Redlands Learning Hub was being constructed. At the beginning many of us thought it would be a difficult time. However, as we progressed, I noticed something about our students; they became much more able to cope with last-minute room changes or a lesson in the Hall or no access to a particular building. I noticed that they became better at being on top of their daily changing schedule and ‘going with the flow’. Complaints dwindled and students got on with the day. They had developed resilience.

I have been reflecting on resilience and the opportunities lockdown has brought for our students. Not for a minute am I saying it is an easy time, but students are growing in their self-management skills. As they negotiate the challenge of following the timetable, engaging when the zoom is glitching and completing learning tasks even if they are challenging, all contribute to strengthening our students. These all begin to build that muscle of resilience. Students adjust as they discover it is another week and another week in lockdown and so rather than giving up, with the right support, they persevere and build their resilience.

Home becomes the primary place of learning and so the desk space which was previously for “home-learning” expands in their minds to the place of learning. This is a great asset as they develop patterns of study with the framework of timetable. This is what later years of studying at school and university requires: self-management of their learning with their own study plan.

This is similar to what James wrote in his letter in the first century and holds true for all time:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4)

James was talking about the trials the first century Christians faced because of their faith (censure, arrest, loss of property, even death) but the principle is the same. Maturity and perseverance come from facing difficulties. I think James gives us another insight for facing lockdown as well. The attitude we face it with: ‘consider it pure joy’. This is a hint that as we face this and any difficulty, we can choose to see it as an opportunity to grow, an opportunity to discover more of ourselves, and an opportunity to trust God and learn more of him. Approaching this time with an attitude of joy, seeing the opportunities, will build our resilience and help our wellbeing too.

Let me encourage you to see the hidden gems of this time for our own and our students’ development.

God Bless

Tutor Schedule

In line with its core purpose, we have been focusing on integrating a flexible schedule of experiences for our Yr 12s during their participation in ‘Lock-down Tutor Time’. Students have options of meeting one-on-one with their tutors; using zoom break-out rooms to chat informally with friends; engaging with Chapel Postcards; picking through favourite comfort food; or participating in structured activities such as Redlands Race to Tokyo Olympic Challenge.

As Tutor Time pauses for two weeks while the cohort undertake their Trial Examinations, we hope that students take the opportunity to integrate what has been most useful for them from the range of activities offered.

Trial Examinations

In the midst of changing schedules and timetables, our Yr 12s have been steadily preparing for their Trial Examinations. While the process is understandably stressful, it is possibly helpful to distinguish with the young adult – currently lurking in your upstairs area or basement – the differences between the useful tensions of incipient performance and unconstructive rumination or catastrophising.

The Trial (and Final) Examinations are not an ultimate guide to your potential, life-path or self-worth. They are merely feedback on what you were able to achieve on the day. Be attentive to and use the information these upcoming examinations provide, because this is their only purpose.

Attendance and Routine

Students are expected to attend all Zoom lessons. If a student is unable to attend any class, please promptly provide an explanation via email to ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au. As Remote Learning continues, we’re learning the value and importance of structure and routine in maintaining engagement in learning. Mornings are key to setting a good routine for the day. If your child is finding it more challenging to get up in the morning, help them find something to look forward to in the morning, whether that is a cup of tea, a bike ride or a refreshing shower. Sticking to a routine will help them feel more productive and fulfilled throughout the day and make sleep easier in the evening.

Adjusted Yr 10 Assessment Timetable

As mentioned by Ms Van de Peer in this week’s letter home to parents regarding the adjustments to the Yr 10 Term 3 Assessments, we are very pleased with how adeptly Yr 10 has navigated the move to Remote Learning. Yr 10 have demonstrated a great amount of maturity and flexibility in being able to learn remotely, and from many reports, are using their independent learning time effectively.

Home Learning has been greatly reduced and now the adjustments have been implemented across most of the subjects undertaken by Yr 10.

The updated Assessment Schedule for Term 3 can be accessed here. As seen in the document, there are details about how each task has been modified, so you can see the active steps the School is taking to ensure the quality of tasks, their relevance in the Remote Learning setting and the expectations we have for how students should engage. The tasks have also been hyperlinked so you can easily locate the Assessment Notification on the Course Information Page in iLearn.

Zoom Expectations

Zoom expectations were reinforced with students this week.  It is the expectation that each student has their camera on each lesson, their full head and shoulders in the camera screen, be wearing appropriate PE uniform and have their name properly printed as their blank screen image.  Meeting these basic expectations each day will ensure students and teachers can focus on academic and pastoral care appropriately.

Please continue to send any reasons for missing classes or full days to SSAbsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au   In addition to the daily attendance automated notifications, Year Advisors are also following up with unexcused absences or patterns of absence for students.  The communication from parents regarding attendance is extremely helpful and appreciated.

Assessment Modifications

Given our status in Remote Learning, we have modified the Term 3 assessments. Yr 8 has now been published and has been made available to students this week. Whilst it is important to maintain normalcy as much as possible in lockdown, we are aware that students are experiencing Zoom fatigue and spending hours on preparing for an assessment is not ideal. Therefore, assessments are being modified in a variety of ways to support student wellbeing.

Australian Mathematics Competition

This week students from Yr 7-11 Extension Mathematics classes competed in the Australian Mathematics Competition against top mathematics students across the country. They engaged with 30 real-world scenarios that demonstrated the importance and relevance of Mathematics in students’ everyday lives. We congratulate all Yr 8 students for their online participation and thank Mr Baker for remotely coordinating this enrichment opportunity.

SCHOOL TV SPECIAL REPORT: Wellbeing Checklist for Secondary

During this time of Coronavirus, many of us have experienced a variety of emotions ranging from fear to anxiety. All of these are considered to be normal and natural responses to any challenging situation that can often result in our minds telling us all kinds of scary stories. This can be especially true for teenagers and senior students for whom ‘what if’  stories will often predict the worst.

Adolescents are considered to be more at risk of anxiety and depression disorders which may affect their mood, thinking and behaviour. Although this is completely understandable given the current situation, any unusual behaviour that lasts for more than 2-3 weeks may be a cause for concern. Adult carers need to remain vigilant for any signs of distress, even though your adolescent may not have any prior history of mental illness. Early intervention, diagnosis and treatment have never been more important. If you do have any concerns relating to your teenager’s mental health, you may wish to consider using the assessment tool provided by Beyond Blue. The checklist aims to measure how your teen has been feeling over the past four weeks. After completion, the results can be printed for your records, or alternatively, provided to your medical practitioner.

Click here to access the Beyond Blue Assessment Tool. Note: For New Zealand audiences the Beyond Blue site references Australian phone numbers. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact your school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Tutor Time

During Tutor, Yr 7 will be participating in the Redlands Up Project which is inspired by the Up Series, a documentary which followed the lives of ten males and four females in England beginning in 1964, when they were seven years old. The first film was titled Seven Up!  with later films adjusting the number in the title to match the age of the subjects at the time of filming. The documentary has had nine episodes—one every seven years—thus spanning 56 years.

AIM: Capture a ‘moment in time’ to reflect back on and to see how student thoughts, ideas, ambitions and dreams have changed as they grow into young adults. It will provide the students with an opportunity to create a visual “time capsule” that is lighthearted and really enjoyable for them and parents to watch back many years later. Films will be shared at the Valedictory Dinner in Yr 12!

Student Work

Students in Visual Arts have enjoyed the challenge of learning how to use Adobe Photoshop to create digital artworks. Students have “cloned” themselves and then used Photoshop to create a self portrait artwork. Please view the artworks by Zara Anderson, Katherine Budden and Leonardo Migliucci. Well done to these students for their creativity and engagement with the task.

Yr 7 McDouall Blue – Ms De Leo’s Tutor Group doing their best to keep things entertaining.

Secondary School Photographs

The Redlands Standard Photo Packages will be posted to your primary contact address early next week by the photographers at Melba Studios. Included in the package will be details for ordering Sport and Cocurricular activity photos from Melba Studios.

If you have any questions or additional orders, please contact Melba Studios directly on (02) 9438 4566 or email sales@melbastudios.com.au.

JUNIOR SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

$8,894 Raised for Jeans for Genes Day!

Wow! What a joy it was to come together as a whole school to continue our annual support of Jeans for Genes Day. Our morning Zooms were denim-dominated and I thank students, staff and families for their generosity in raising the phenomenal amount of $8,894!

In relation to this, we received the following message from one of our parents who works at the Children’s Medical Research Institute:

“I just wanted to send a quick note to thank you both for enabling your schools to continue to support the Children’s Medical Research Institute’s Jeans for Genes campaign – even during another Covid lockdown.

The funds raised by this long running campaign not only support the Institute’s Gene Therapy Research unit but now also support all our other research efforts and they really do make a significant contribution to our ability to make new discoveries. Thanks very much.”

Thank you everyone for supporting us make a difference.

STEAM Week

Next week is National Science Week and this will be the inspiration for a number of learning activities, talks and challenges over the week as outlined below. This year’s slogan for the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) Challenge Day is ‘imagine, ideate, tinker and create’

STEAM Challenges Day

On Wednesday morning during roll call and wellbeing check in time, class teachers will go through the plan for the day and explain the various options. This will also be on Google Classroom for them and there are optional Zoom ‘Create and Chat’ times when they can jump on for assistance and/ or simply hanging out with other students.

Students will be able to choose from a range of design and make challenges to imagine, build and test their ideas. Students will also have the option to work on their own, with a school friend, a sibling or with their family to complete their chosen challenge and submit their designs.

No special equipment is needed; simply dust off the LEGO, gather a pile of recycled materials, tape, string, elastic bands in preparation for bringing ideas to life.

Guest Speakers

We are very excited to have two special guest speakers during the week to talk about how Science, Technology and Data have helped development in elite sport in areas such as technique, endurance and performance.

Next Thursday, Yrs 5 & 6 will hear from Tokyo 2020 bronze medal rower, Cameron Girdlestone on this topic and he is also looking forward to filming a few clips from the rowing sheds in Canberra after he returns there at the weekend after his time in quarantine.

Also, later next week, Yrs 3 & 4 and interested netballers will hear form NSW Swifts and Australian international, Maddy Proud, on the same topic. Maddy is currently preparing for this Saturday’s major semi-final and will know her training schedule for next week on Monday at which point students and teachers will be notified. Maddy has also recently had her first children’s book published, Grace on the Court, so will share her passion for writing too.

Science Week Learning Activities

On their timetables next week, we have allocated an afternoon time for all students to be involved in a range of Science activities which have been organised for them.

Book Week – Week 7

Our plans are well underway to celebrate this year’s annual Book Week the week after next. Our pre-booked authors have confirmed that they will still be able to present to the students via Zoom and Yrs 3 and 4 will enjoy hearing from Gregg Dreise and Yrs 5 and 6 from author, Allison (A.L.) Tait.

Book Character Dress Up Day

As well as a range of literature-inspired activities connecting to this year’s theme of ‘Old worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’, we will also hold our annual Book Character Dress Up day so you might like to talk to your children in planning your outfits and families would be most welcome to join in too! Some suggestions are listed below based on this year’s theme but of course, students can also dress up as any book character. There is certainly no expectation on costumes as we are mindful of being in lockdown too!

New worlds:                NASA Astronaut

Old worlds:                 A mystery in Ancient Egypt

Other worlds:             The Hobbit

Very old world:           Dinosaurs

Other worlds:              Under the Sea

Other worlds:              Monsters!

Other worlds:              The World of Wizardry and Magic!

Remote Learning Reminders

As we move into Week 5, we would be grateful if parents might share these timely reminders with children as class teachers will also do:

  • Students should be in School PE kit (unless there is a circumstance that precludes this)
  • Students should aim to arrive to a Zoom a couple of minutes before the start time. Many are arriving late and missing important teaching.
  • Students do not need to have their phone with them during learning time
  • Please ensure that students are not using iMessage during learning time

Week 6 Wellbeing Tips

One of our Junior Campus counsellors, Ms Courtney Karpin has put together some helpful strategies to help parents deal with the anxiety that some children are feeling towards COVID.

Maggie Dent’s free podcasts on ABC – ‘Parental as Anything’

https://www.maggiedent.com/blog/category/maggie-in-the-media/radio-podcasts/abc-radio/parental-as-anything-podcast/

In these podcasts, Maggie discusses how to talk to children about coronavirus. Some of her key points are:

  • Talk to kids in age-appropriate way
  • Avoid talking about things out loud
  • Kids need to know they have agency to stop spread of virus by doing protective behaviours like hand washing
  • Chat with kids about good things that are happening – amazing scientists working together, for example
  • You can help lower stress in family by focusing on what you can do
  • Time to go slow, practice relaxation, create new habits (yoga, tai chi with kids)
  • What new family rituals can you create – create pathways of memory so kids can remember their lockdown experiences way into adulthood (stargazing nights, teddy bear picnics, ‘make your own pizza’ nights)
  • Life skills – our job is to teach children valuable life skills (grow vegetables, write a letter, teach them organisational skills by doing an early spring clean). Your children will have these tools for life

How to Work from Home with Kids

  • People appreciate openness and transparency – they respect this. Put your working hours in calendar, communicate to others your boundaries and parameters
  • Preserve your mental resources. Outsource your information, write lists
  • Not the time to be enforcing strict rules
  • Plan your bandwidth of the day -so you don’t have 4 family members needing to Zoom at the same time while another streams a movie
  • Build a fortress around your focus. We are constantly hijacked with WhatsApp notifications, emails etc. This impacts our capacity to focus and rather contributes to our stress state. Disable alerts and notifications when you have to be in focused state
  • Work in sprints rather than marathons. We cannot work for more than 90-minute increments. Taking 5-minute hourly breaks, and doing something active with that time, helps to bolster our attention
  • Check emails only on your laptop, take them off your phone
  • Wind down or have an ‘end of day’ ritual – write down 1 thing you did accomplish. We have a negativity bias and overlook what we have done. Write a milestone you’ve accomplished. You can also write down 1 goal for the next day and put it in your calendar
  • When your children do try their best, thank them for their efforts
  • Fill up their ‘love tank’ – kids want a moment of connection. What can you do before diving into work that can top them up? (Perhaps it’s getting them out, or feeding them)
  • People perform poorly when objects are in their field of vision. ‘A tidy desk is a tidy mind’. Minimise visual and mental distractions (this doesn’t mean you need to tidy the whole house!)
  • Maybe it’s using technology for yourself as a compensation tool. There is nothing wrong with watching (or binging) on a show to help you feel good, especially if this will put you in a better place as a parent
  • Gather at morning tea /lunch and come together to connect.
  • Prioritise your calm down time, even for 5 minutes (there are some great mindfulness activities that take only 5 minutes!) You might even be modelling and encourage your child to join you.

Music

Music Note Day

We are fortunate at Redlands to have an extraordinary team of over 30 Music specialists from P-12 who work tirelessly in service of musical opportunities for our students. Whether starting out with their first violin lessons or finalising their Yr 12 HSC and IB coursework, our students have some of the finest Musician-Educators in the country working in their corner. This fact has never been more apparent than in the current climate, as our senior-most students wrap up their Redlands Music learning knowing a great host are cheering, coaching, and working behind the scenes to support them.

Yr 12

Our Yr 12 cohort continue to model extraordinary resilience, with the latest NESA advice providing insight as to how we now map the final aspects of the Yr 12 coursework. Teachers and students will work closely together in the coming days and weeks to ensure our best foot is forward for these final tasks. We wish our Senior Students all the best with their Trial examinations this coming week.

Welcome & Thanks

This week we welcome James Olds to the permanent role of Senior Campus Music Administrator, while we extend our thanks to Zoe Sun who has served our team and community well these past few months. Alongside Jacqueline McGlade in the Junior Campus Music Office, James looks forward to assisting our community with any Music-related needs that arise on the Senior Campus.

Learning Music from Home

As our home-learning continues, so do the routines and patterns that are now in place. All extracurricular and cocurricular Music Lessons, Classes and Ensembles continue in the same manner for the week ahead.

With varied community preferences regarding early morning Zoom sessions, the default for our weekly rehearsal provisions at this time remains through the upload/download of resources and activities from the respective learning platforms (Seesaw, Google Classroom and iLearn), and not necessarily through a weekly Zoom session. Ensemble resources are released each week in time for the regularly timetabled session. Conductors communicate directly with ensembles should they wish for a Zoom session be scheduled in support of the weekly resource upload. We commend our students for the way that they are engaging with this altered format.

Redlands Composition Competition – Final Call!

The Redlands Composition Competition is accepting submissions to the Music Department Auditions iLearn page until TOMORROW (13th August 2021). All the best!

Music Awards 2021

Though the current situation has dampened plans for our annual Friends of Music ‘Music Awards Dinner’ this month, the Music Department will be announcing the Award Recipients for the four prizes in Years 8-11 next week in Note Day!  Students have been nominated for their involvement (pre-lockdown) honouring four Award categories : Dedication, Leadership, Excellence & Service. We look forward to sharing the winners with you in Note Day next week.

Other Date Changes

Please keep your eye on the Music Events dates on Pulse in case of adjustments in the term ahead, in light of our evolving context.

AMEB Exams

Plans for our forthcoming examination sessions remain a work in progress, though we can confirm that we have had productive conversations with the AMEB this week, and clarity is on its way. It has been confirmed that all face-to-face examinations will now be via Video upload, with filming dates to be advised for later in the year. We will be emailing respective families directly in the coming week. Please contact Jacqueline McGlade if you have further questions in the meantime.
