From the Principal

National Science Week

There has been a cornucopia of Science activities throughout the School to celebrate National Science Week. Secondary School students have walked, run and cartwheeled across oobleck pools, participated in a paper plane challenge, and those in Year 7 have explored the galaxies in a planetarium installed in Redlands Hall. The Science behind the oobleck pools was so fascinating that I was compelled to gain a first-hand experience!

Students have heard from a number of Redlands parents and other professionals working in the field of Science. On Monday, Year 10 students learnt about genetics from Redlands parent Dr Kylie de Boer, on Tuesday Year 8 learnt about gravity from Professor Jason Twamley and tomorrow morning, Year 7 students will hear from Redlands parent Dr Larry Marshall, Chief Executive of the CSIRO. This morning, a large number of students from all Year Groups attended Breakfast with a Scientist in Redlands Hall, where six Redlands parents shared the very diverse careers that can result from a study of Science. These included Professor Ian Kerridge and his career in haematology; Dr Melanie Zeppel (parent and Redlander, Class of 1989) and her initial career in plant physiology, data analysis and climate change and now in genomic medicine and health economics; Duncan MacDonald, from zoology to geology; Jay Cunningham and physiotherapy; Susan Calvert and environmental science; and Peter Bailey and engineering.

Last week, our Scientist-in-residence, Dr Alana Wylie, visited the Junior and Preparatory Schools. She spoke with Junior School students about pioneering scientists from the past whose work has made a significant difference to the way we live today, and worked with Preparatory School students to undertake specific experiments and other activities to develop their problem solving skills.

I sincerely thank all parents and other speakers for sharing their time and passion for Science with our students, expanding their skills and horizons. Thank you also to Coordinator of Science, Sarah Harrisson, Dean of Teaching and Learning P-6, Nigel Coutts, and all of the Science teachers involved in this stimulating incursion of scientific enrichment for our students.

Sailing

I am delighted to advise that commencing with this coming summer sports season, we will be working in partnership with the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in Kirribilli for our Sailing program. Redlands will be the first school to ever work with this esteemed and prestigious sailing organisation and we look forward to a long and fruitful association. Redlander Locky Pryor, 2008 Sports Captain and Sailing Captain, will be working with the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron to ensure the smooth transition and success of the Sailing program for our Junior and Secondary School sailors.

ISA Semi Finals

This weekend, we have 19 teams contesting the ISA Semi Finals in Football, Netball, Rugby and Hockey, including our Firsts teams for Football (Girls), Netball, Hockey and Rugby, all of our Girls Football teams, a number of Boys Football teams, and most of our Netball teams. I wish all teams all the very best in this penultimate challenge. Last weekend our Netball Firsts team played with intense determination in their final round against a similarly determined Chevalier opposition. The girls from both teams were playing to settle 3rd and 4th positions in Division 1. Our girls led throughout the game, but there was rarely more than 5 goals difference at any point in the game. Concentration lapses might well have been fatal and cool heads under pressure were evident from both teams. The same strong qualities of strength, fitness, courage, cool heads, teamwork, skills and spirit will again be called upon this Saturday when they meet Barker College. I encourage all teams this Saturday to look to the example set by our Netball Firsts and play as though it was the final itself.

I encourage all students whose ISA winter competition has now finished to go and support our teams in their quest to reach the Finals and remind student supporters that they must be well dressed and tidy in their school uniforms, as they too will be representing our School.

Head of Secondary School

Winter School

Last week I was fortunate enough to spend three days down at Winter School at our High Country Campus just outside of Jindabyne. This year we have approximately 70 students attending Winter School for the duration of Term 3 where they can continue their academic studies while also developing their snowsports skills in a supportive residential school environment. It is an intense program as each week students have two long academic school days, three days split between school and the snow and two days on the snow. In addition to developing their skills of independence, teamwork and responsibility through the many and varied activities provided for them at Winter School, students also spend two hours of focused, supervised study and revision each evening. (A number of current and former Winter School students have commented about the excellent study habits they develop at Winter School.) This year I was particularly struck by the special environment created at Winter School and the wonderful opportunity it provides for our students. Winter School and our High Country Campus, certainly make Redlands that “little bit more special” and allow students to develop skills which will assist them in developing life-readiness.

Science Week

This week we have been celebrating National Science Week in the Secondary School with a number of different activities to promote science in the community, as well as stimulate and ignite student interest in science. The theme of the week was Game Changers and Change Makers and some of the activities have included a range of guest speakers, an oobleck pool, a paper airplane competition, a planetarium in the gym and Breakfast with a Scientist. I would like to thank the Science Department for organising this week and providing all of these wonderful opportunities for our students.

Tanzania Service Learning Trip

In the recent holidays, 24 Yr 11 students and three teachers spent two and half weeks on a Service learning trip to Tanzania. After months of preparation for this trip (including training treks around Sydney) the group embarked on their travels with both excitement and a bit of trepidation when they arrived at the airport on 6 July. Early in the trip the group spent time with a Maasai community outside of Arusha and assisted them in building classrooms and other infrastructure at a local school. Later in the trip the group embarked on a very challenging trek to the summit of Mount Meru where they were able to see the sun rise over Mount Kilimanjaro. In addition, towards the end of the trip the group experienced an African safari in Tarangire National Park. In addition to the important Service Learning components of the trip, the students also developed important leadership and collaboration skills which will hopefully assist them for years to come. We are very fortunate to have so many domestic and overseas Service Learning and language immersion trips available for our students each year. I would like to especially thank Ms Coleman, Ms Shorter and Mr Ellis for their efforts in leading this trip for our students.

Engineering Bridge Building Competition

On Tuesday 7 August our Redlands team of Yr 8 students – Jacob Gold, Kyle Banfield, Charlie Baskerville and Remy Wilson competed against 60 other teams from all over NSW for this year’s Aurecon Bridge Building competition at the Art Gallery of NSW.  The aim was to design and build a bridge to span a 700mm gap using only balsa wood, a cardboard tube and PVA glue.

Our bridge weighed just over 100 grams and surprisingly supported 20.2kg before it twisted and snapped. Whilst the strongest bridge carried 44.7 kg, most bridges carried less than 10kg. In addition, teams entered the Best Digital Bridge Design using software called Sketch-up. Congratulations goes to the Redlands team who, for the second successive year, won first place for our digital design.

Science Week

The week started with one of our Science teachers, Simone Bryant, and our Laboratory Manager, Annabel Isaacs, making liquid nitrogen icecream for Secondary teachers. The -190oC liquid nitrogen, when removed from its flask, evaporates rapidly at room temperature. This is used to chill quickly a creamy custard mixture being beaten. The result is a smooth creamy vanilla icecream.

Yr 10 were privileged to hear from one of our parent Scientists Dr Kylie De Boer talking about being curious and asking questions which have directed her pathway and success working in the field of Reproduction technologies.

On Tuesday lunchtime an Oobleck pool appeared in Liggins Quad. Students and staff were curious but after a demonstration from Ms Apple showing that ‘you can walk on a liquid’ they lined up to give it a go. The Oobleck is made from cornstarch and water and is called a non-newtonian fluid as it does not follow the normal viscosity rules of liquids. Place your hand gently on it and it will sink into it but add pressure, such as a slap or run over it, and it behaves like a solid.

Breakfast with a Scientist

This morning six Redlands parents, who work in a variety of Science fields, spoke to an enthusiastic group of students about a career in their chosen specialty and the best bits about their job. We heard from Professor Ian Kerridge about Haematology and how studying cells is developing a new way to treat cancer, Dr Melanie Zeppel on how she ended up as a specialist data analyst in genomic medicine, Environmental Scientist Susan Calvert whose career involved conserving the Green and Golden Bell frog during the Sydney Olympic Games construction, Duncan MacDonald whose interests in Science led him from Zoology to Geology with a passion for finding what is inside the rocks that make up the Earth, Jay Cunningham about the range of opportunities in the field of Physiotherapy, and Peter Bailey and his colleague Jane enthralling us with the amazing and creative buildings designed and built by engineers. All of the scientists spoke about being curious, using problem solving skills and working to make others life better. Thank you to all involved.

They were enthusiastic in answering enquiries from prospective students and parents.

A smooth running Parent Teacher night cannot be achieved without help from volunteers, who usually set up approximately 80 tables and 240 chairs, organise name tags, usher parents to the right spot and charge the bell. So far, all the Parent Teacher nights have been supported by our Yr 11s. Thank you to Chloe Church, Zoë Withington, Kieran Petal, Chloe Woodward, Madeline Bates, Ilann Labouze, Josiah Tea and Joh Sawa for their great assistance at the Yr 8 and 9 evenings at the beginning of the term.

We would also like to thank all the students who volunteered for Gate Duties on both the Secondary and Junior Campuses for their time, warm approach and punctuality while Year 12s are away doing their Trial Examinations.

Pastoral Care

In Pastoral Care at the moment we are focusing on risk taking and decision making. You can’t protect your child from failing, feeling disappointed, hurt or sad. They have to find this out on their own. Life is about taking risks, both negative and positive ones, that’s how we learn to make the right decisions for ourselves. Preventing your child from taking risks won’t empower them to become the adult you want them to be. Celebrate their successes and learn how to support your child to respond well to failure.

Tombola Jars

Yr 10 students are running a Jam Jar Tombola stall this year at the Redlands Spring Fair. Students are encouraged to collect jars and fill them with lollies, toys, craft items, vouchers etc. Once the jars are full students can bring them into school and give them to their Tutor.

Science Week

This week Redlands is celebrating Science Week. In Tutor Time yesterday students undertook the Science Quiz. The questions were based upon various scientific areas including Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and the duration of the quiz was 20 minutes. Students worked in teams of three for a very exciting and intense 20 minutes. We extend our congratulations to James Watson, Gianni Watson and Stuart Crick from Simone Bryant’s Tutor Group, Dumolo Blue, as they scored 19/20 on the quiz.

Tutor Time Pastoral Program

This week, our shared focus has been the benefits of forward planning. In summary, ‘what students can proactively do now to ensure benefits in the future’. This has much to do with mindset, striving for personal progress and change. Learning that personal progress can lead to happiness rather than momentary happiness derived from money and possessions. In addition, students were encouraged to see that a proactive mindset encourages students to set-backs as just that, a set-back; having resilience to strive to be the ‘victor’ as opposed to a ‘victim’. Students have been asked to create a portrait of how they see themselves in ten years. Students were also asked to list the positive attributes that they possess, as a person with a pro-active mindset. Students then shared their drawings and understandings from the session, and voted on the best portrait that embodied proactive attributes.

Achievements

There are numerous students from Yr 8 who are involved in the State Interschools Snowsports Championships. We wish all students the best with their individual events, and look forward to hearing of their achievements.

National Science Week

Yr 8 had a guest speaker visit this week from Macquarie University. Jason Twamley’s research currently is based on magnetic quantum engineering, and his explanation of current study was fascinating; what do floating frogs have to tell us about building a zero-gravity laboratory at Macquarie University?

Upcoming Events

Sunday 19 – Wednesday 22 August

A group of Yrs 7-10 Secondary School musicians will be participating in the Annual HICES Music Festival next week, to be held at Stanwell Tops Conference Centre. After completing a thorough audition process last term, Eden Borrie was selected to participate in this three day Music Camp, that culminates with an exciting Music Festival Concert at The Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday 22 August. The HICES Music Festival has provided an outstanding opportunity for young musicians in HICES schools to gather and experience musical excellence. Under the direction of many well-respected conductors, the Festival this year will involve over 400 students and staff from the HICES Schools Association, in rehearsing a broad selection of repertoire across various Music ensembles. Eden will have the privilege to work in association with internationally acclaimed Choral and Orchestral Conductor, Mr Paul Jarman, a well-loved and respected Australian composer. We wish Eden well.

Mosman Academy Soccer Grand Final

Five Yr 7 boys have had a tremendous season playing for Mosman Academy U13s and their team have successfully made it to the Grand Final this coming Sunday. Everyone is welcome to come and watch and cheer them on at Cromer Park Stadium, this Sunday 19 August, kick off is at 9.30am. They will play Forrest Killarney in a tightly fought Grand Final! The boys are: Matthew Fry, Seb Griffith, Ethan McFarlane, Joe Irvine and Finn Woodward.

Communication

Your enquiries are important. A reminder that general enquiries should be sent to your child’s Tutor who will direct questions accordingly. Sports and academic enquiries should be directed to the appropriate departments. Due to the large volume of emails received, it can take time for me to respond to emails and your patience is appreciated.

ClassAct 50 Task Challenge

On Tuesday Tutor Groups started the The ClassAct 50 Task Challenge. The challenge is a digital literacy challenge sponsored by the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner. ClassAct consists of 50 challenges that students are encouraged to work through to develop a culture of respect and positive interaction in their online and offline worlds and to develop digital citizenship skills.

Each task relates to one or more of the categories:

  1. eSecurity—privacy, protecting personal information
  2. eSafety—managing screen-time, digital footprint, reputation
  3. Help and support
  4. Respect and relationships
  5. Cyberbullying

You can work through challenges at home too. The challenge is flexible and you can choose how you work through tasks. Rregardless of how you commit, the intention is to make digital intelligence part of your regular conversation at home to help increase digital safety, reduce negative behaviours like cyberbullying and to make time online as positive and enjoyable as possible.

Science Week

This week is Science Week at Redlands. Students were involved in a Science focused activity during Tutor Time on Wednesday. Breakfast with a Scientist proved popular with 58 Yr 7 students attending!

Be Proactive

Yr 7 have been introduced to the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Stephen Covey. On Friday, students will explore Habit #1 Be Proactive. Being proactive rather than reactive means controlling the moment rather than letting the moment control you. Students are encouraging to take action before problems arrive – fostering a growth over fixed mindset. Having a proactive mindset, students should see improved work quality and relationships etc. You are able to read more on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens here.

How Can We Foster a Culture of Personal Accountability in Our Schools?

This was the topic of one of the sessions I was involved in last Thursday as I spent a day of learning at UTS as part of an educational summit the university was hosting. The session was led by Julie Inman Grant, the Australian Government’s eSafety Commissioner who shared the government’s focus on their four R’s of the digital age: Respect, Responsibility, Reasoning and Resilience, the first two of which also form part of our School Values. Some interesting points and provocations that Inman made included:

  • Do we, as adults, model respectful use of technology? Most adults are online every day so we need to embrace this norm and provide students with instruction for the safe and balanced use of technology.
  • Are parents mirroring addicted behaviour with technology use? What would your children say about your use of technology?
  • Parents need to be an online presence in their child’s life too. Just as we would not leave our young children alone in an unfamiliar playground, the digital playground is also a space that we need to look after our children.
  • Game addiction comes up as the main concern for parents and teachers and has been defined as a mental disease by World Health Organisation.

Earlier this term, Mr Corcoran (Head of Secondary School), shared five key principles to stay safe online in Note Day from a presentation to our Secondary students and parents which I thought would be useful to share with Junior School parents too, some of whom I know may be wrestling with similar concerns. Whilst our older students may think that they can navigate the online space themselves, the vast majority don’t have the emotional awareness and knowledge to do so, so I encourage parents to take on board these recommendations.

  1. Set rules and boundaries – just like other areas of life, there should be clear rules associated with technology use. Rules are not meant to stop children having fun, they are to protect them. Some useful rules should focus on time limits and curfews, an understanding of what language is acceptable, guidelines of where in the home technology can and can’t be used, what websites, games and apps can be used, and what to do if something of concern happens or a mistake is made.
  2. Stay current – this involves parents being across what children generally do on the internet, when children are going online, what programs/software/games they are using. You can stay current by talking to their children and other adults, seek advice or contact the school for guidance.
  3. Take charge – ensure technology is not taking charge. Be aware of what technology is used, where and when. What sites are being accessed and where these are occurring. Remove technology from bedrooms – this should be a safe space.
  4. Use management controls – parents have a right to know where their children go and whom they communicate with.
  5. Communicate – create an environment of openness about technology and talk about it with your children.

As I have discovered, the Office of the eSafety Commissioner’s iParent section is a treasure-trove of information, which I would highly recommend parents to spend some time exploring as we all learn and work together to support and guide our students to make positive choices to harness the power of technology, something that is and will continue to be an integral part of their lives, both now and in the future.

Redlands Spring Fair

We are looking forward to the official launch of the Redlands Spring Fair next week as we countdown the final month. Junior School students and families will already have seen the prominent banners on both campuses and on Monday, the students will be given some information  to excite them in our assembly from a special guest.

Early next week, Spring Fair raffle tickets will also be distributed to the eldest family member in the Junior School so please look out for them in your child’s bag. Both sold and unsold raffle tickets should be returned back to Junior School Reception no later than 3 September. We appreciate your support.

Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day

We are looking forward to welcoming the children’s grandparents or special friends tomorrow on this annual special community day for our Junior Campus.

Unless guests are here for the early part of the morning during the Prep part of this day, please can I ask that guests are asked to arrive as close to the scheduled 11am start as possible. This timing is planned to allow our Prep guests to depart at around 10.30am which should then free up parking spaces around the Campus for Junior School guests.

Whooping Cough Alert

We have had a notification of Whooping Cough in Yr 5.  Please see this link for information relating to this infectious disease to assess any risk. Should you suspect your child of having Whooping Cough, and they are tested for same, they should remain at home until the results have been relayed back to you. If the result is positive, please notify us immediately, and keep your child at home until the first five full days of the antibiotic has been taken and they feel well enough to return to school.

Supporting our Farmers (Friday 24 August)

Like many, I have been saddened to read and hear of the plight of Australia’s farming community whose plight has been highlighted with the extreme droughts. As a School, Redlands will hold a collection next week on both campuses and the Junior School will tie in our collection with ‘Dress Up as a Book Character Day’ next Friday 24 August. Some of our Yr 11 students have also prepared a short informative video about the extremities of the impacts this drought is having on rural communities, which we will share with students in assembly next week to raise their awareness. I know that many in our Redlands community have connections in the farming community and I was so encouraged to have received a number of compassionate student requests to help the farmers too, as we help to mitigate against the effects of the drought and bring hope to hurting communities.

How Do We Build Understanding?

This is often a question staff ponder as they develop their lessons and configure the type of learning experiences given to students. The work of Harvard’s Project Zero offers a useful solution in their Teaching for Understanding research and methodology. Tina Blythe in The Teaching for Understanding Guide offers the more detailed definition of “Understanding” that is required, a performance perspective. “The Performance perspective says, in brief, that understanding is a matter of being able to do a variety of thought-provoking things with a topic, such as explaining, finding evidence and examples, generalising, applying, analogising, and representing the topic in new ways.” This leads to a definition with a focus on the ability or even disposition to apply what one knows to new situations, alternate contexts or to solve new problems. There is a difference between the things you know and the things you understand. If you were asked to write on a subject that you have a deep “understanding” on, this would be quite different from a topic that you simply “know” about. In the Preparatory School, students are given multiple opportunities for hands-on learning which help build a deep understanding. Teachers use the thinking moves as a guide when planning learning opportunities. They refer to the Understanding Map which defines each of these thinking moves when they are planning for learning.

By identifying and naming the types of thinking students will require as they develop their understandings, teachers are better able to identify learning experiences, scaffolds and routines which will support this. Our goal is to always identify the type of thinking students will need and select strategies which support this, rather than selecting a strategy with attention to the thinking it builds. The long game is for students to develop the metacognitive skills to identify the thinking they require in a particular context and to select strategies which support this.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

The staff are looking forward to welcoming grandparents and special friends to school tomorrow. The school day begins at the regular time of 8.20am, where students will begin classes as usual. We invite grandparents to start their visit in the Prep classrooms at 9.00am with a musical concert to follow in Dunnet Hall. If grandparents and special friends are staying for the Junior School’s similar event there will be a light morning tea served in the Piazza.

Arrival to School

Could I please remind all families that there is a teacher on duty from 8.00am. Students are not permitted in the playground, without a parent or carer present, before this time. Thank you for your vigilance with this very important duty of care reminder.

Book Week and Supporting Our Farmers

On Thursday 23 August, the Prep School will be participating in a Dress Up Day as a culminating activity for Book Week. This year’s topic is Find Your Treasure and students are invited to dress up with a pirate theme or another treasure idea they have in mind. A reminder that students need to be able to use the play equipment and participate in sports lessons and therefore sandshoes and appropriate clothing is a requirement.

It has been heart-warming to hear the students’ recent response to the plight of the farmers. To this end, the Prep School will be raising funds in the form of a gold coin donation during Book Week Dress Up Day.

Spring Fair

Thank you to the wonderful generosity of the community for the many donations of sweets for the upcoming Redlands Spring Fair. These donations will go toward prizes for our Early Childhood stalls –  Old Fashioned Lollies, Lucky Dip and Lob-a-Choc. There is a box in the Prep Reception if you would like to make a donation and haven’t already done so. Next week, a book of raffle tickets will go home to the eldest family member on the Junior Campus, giving our community an opportunity to win some terrific prizes and support the Redlands Spring Fair. Both sold and unsold raffle tickets need to be returned to the Prep Reception by 3 September. Thank you.

Jump Rope for Heart

Mrs Chipper has organised incremental goals for the students to reach as fundraising targets this term. Last week the students of the Prep School reached a milestone fundraising amount of $20,000.00. This meant that the Head of Early Childhood would be a student for the day in the class that had raised the most amount of money. In Week 6, I am looking forward to spending some time in One Green. Congratulations to the students in this class and all of the Prep School for their fundraising efforts.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Transition to School & Sports Day

The Senior classes and Transition Gold (TG) had a wonderful time visiting the Kindergarten classrooms on Wednesday. The teachers read the children stories and they were then able to explore activities set out in the rooms. Thank you to Miss Hurley, Miss Sim, Ms Gordon and Ms Lofgren for this very important first introduction to “big school”. It is also a wonderful opportunity for the Kindergarten teachers to get to know the Senior and TG students before the 2019 school year. After morning tea, students moved to the oval for Sports Day. The weather was glorious, as the children rotated through activities in the sunshine on the Junior Campus Oval. Thank you to Mr Rogers, Mrs Longworth and Yr 5 students for their wonderful organisation, leadership and support of this enjoyable event in our Preschool calendar! Thank you also to the Facilities team and the Junior Canteen staff who supported families with refreshments.

Jump Rope for Heart

The students from 6B and 5B joined the Orange Class Seniors and the students from Transition Gold for a fun and energetic morning of skipping for Jump Rope for Heart Day. The Preschool children showed persistence as they tried their very best at skipping by themselves and with their buddy.

Book Week 20 August

To celebrate Book Week the children are encouraged to bring in their favourite book in Week 5. We will endeavour to share as many books as we can across the week. Please ensure the books are labelled with your child’s name to avoid any confusion upon return.

Resources

If you have any of the following items at home that you either no longer need or they no longer work, we would greatly appreciate these donations. These resources will be used to facilitate dramatic play scenarios for the children.

Laptops
Telephones
Soft toy animals
Hair dryers
Hair straighteners

Better Everyday!

This week I had the pleasure of attending a conference and heard the famous All Blacks Rugby Union coach, Sir Graham Henry, speak about team culture and how it relates to leadership in schools.

Central to his success as a coach was the concept of a team always being ‘process driven’ and ‘people centered’. Throughout his tenure as the All Blacks coach, he and his players were burdened by the pressure of being the most successful sporting team in the world. This title was awarded on the basis of the All Blacks outcomes they achieved, not the process or the people involved in achieving and building those outcomes. Much of his energy was spent on ensuring the people in the team were not using this accolade as their yard stick of achievement but instead remained focussed on promoting and controlling the processes required as a collective to achieve small goals with clear understanding of everyone’s role both on and off the field. Sir Graham (a previous School Principal) throughout his coaching career adopted the catch cry of “Better Everyday!”. Small gains, every day resulting in overall collective success.

School sport can be seen as a far cry from the high pressure world of professional sport. However, this simple concept can be carried through to our own school sporting culture. We must focus on the process not the outcome and strive for everyday improvement in our chosen sports. Students should seek improvement in physical, mental and emotional skills to ensure they can add value to the teams around them and collectively be in ‘Pursuit of Excellence’.

Basketball

Pre-season Basketball is well underway. We have Monday morning training for the boys and Wednesday morning training for the girls until we commence the Summer Sports season. Please see the details below:

If you would like to attend these sessions please email kseebohm@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Football

Boys Football

In the final round of the regular season, most of our boys teams travelled into the city to play against St Andrew’s. The 13A boys continued to show their strength in the competition, coming away with a 3-0 win. Congratulations to the 14A Boys with a massive win over SACS, showing they are in great form heading into the Semis this weekend. Our 1sts Boys also came away with a win after being down 1-0 at half time but they fought back to secure a 2-1 win in the second half.

We have four of our Boys Football teams through to the Semi Finals, which is great result for our first year back in Division 1. Congratulations and good luck to our 13A, 13B, 13C and 14A Boys teams this weekend. All other players are encouraged to come along and support our boys and girls Football teams in their Semi Finals this weekend.

Girls Football

Round 10 saw our Girls Football teams finishing the round with one win, two draws and one loss. Congratulations to the Junior A Girls team who finished the season as minor premiers with an undefeated record. The Junior B team left Chevalier with a 0-0 draw, which thankfully was enough to secure 4th position, keeping the finals dream alive. Our 1sts Girls played away against Oakhill, unfortunately we were missing a few players and left with a tough loss. Our 2nds Girls finished with a 1-1 draw, also finishing top of the table in the regular season.

What a fantastic year for the Redlands Girls Football program, with all four Girls Football teams progressing to the Semi Finals this Saturday. We have the 1sts, 2nds and Junior A Girls teams playing at Macquarie University and our Junior B girls travelling to the Central Coast. Best of luck to all teams!

If you have not yet registered to attend the End of Season Football Presentation, details are: Friday 14 September from 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start at Dee Why RSL. RSVP: Thursday 6 September. Register here.

Hockey

The Girls 1sts team played against CCGS for the first time this season in what was a top of the table clash. Our girls were undermanned without a bench to support the team with interchanges. Despite having many opportunities to score, they went down 0-2 as CCGS took advantage of two short corners to take the win.

The Girls 2nds team played out a 1-1 draw against Chev with Sophie Hilliar scoring our only goal early in the game. Chev had an opportunity to take the lead with a penalty stroke however goalie Oliva McLellan was outstanding in putting the attacking Chev girl off her shot. The girls played well early but some tired legs later in the game and no interchange bench made it hard for them to break away from Chev in the 2nd half.

The Girls 3rds went down in a 0-1 loss. The girls were strong in defence but were not able to retain the ball when on the attack or able to capitalise on their opportunities when taking shots on goal. Once again, a lack on interchange bench made their job much harder than required however this particular team has come a long way this season and should be proud of how close they were to making the finals. Finishing 1 point off 4th place, I would hope that they can build on this momentum next season.

While the 3rds no longer have any games this season, they are still able to come out and support the 1sts and 2nds playing in finals this weekend at Moorebank. The game details can be found on the Redlands Rhino.

Lastly, please set aside the evening on Thursday 13 September for the Hockey Presentation to be held at Cammeray Golf Club from 6.00-8.00pm. Further details and a booking link will be available soon.

Netball

Our ISA Netball teams will take part in their Semi Finals this weekend at the Genea Netball Centre (Sydney Olympic Park). We have eight of our ten ISA teams playing which is a great effort. We look forward to hearing how the teams go this weekend.

Our NSNA competition is now into the final round of the season with the Semi Finals to begin next weekend (NSNA has a three week finals series). Our NSNA 9 Navy team are in a strong position, currently sitting in 3rd place with a victory this weekend securing a finals birth. Our NSNA 9 Gold will unfortunately miss out on the finals this year, but they are looking to finish the season strong with a win in their final game. Our NSNA Yr 8 teams have a big weekend ahead, looking to finish the season strong, both the Navy and Gold teams are unfortunately just outside of the top four. 8 Blue are looking to continue their strong run of form. Currently sitting in 1st place, a victory will secure the top spot for the Semi Final next weekend. Our NSNA Yr 7 teams have had a great season so far, with our 7 Navy team sitting in top spot, and the 7 Gold and Blue teams sitting in 2nd guaranteeing all three Semi Finals next week. It is fantastic to see our junior netballers doing so well!

It would be great to get some more team photos and actions shots from the netball games over the coming weeks. If you take any please send them through to cellis@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

With teams entering the final weeks of the Netball season, it is important to remember training commitments for the coming weeks. Training twice a week will continue for all teams who make Semi Finals and Grand Finals. If teams do not make the finals, they will then only train on Thursday afternoon. During the change from Winter to Summer Sport, there will be some changes to the NSNA training schedule which will be communicated shortly.

The Redlands Netball Presentation Dinner is on Thursday 13 September at Norths Leagues Club. This evening is to celebrate the 2018 Netball season (for both ISA and NSNA teams). Book here. For any further information please contact Karen Kerr.

Rugby

The Redlands Under 15s finished off their season in typical fashion, putting on a wonderful display of structured Rugby as they beat a very willing All Saints side 55-5. To see all of the Winter School students return for the weekend and not miss a beat, to play such a controlled and executed game was a joy to watch and goes some way to show the type of calibre of boys who make up this group. The game started in bizarre fashion with Hunter Auld running in a try immediately off the kick off. From there it was all Redlands as they controlled the ruck speed with Zeke Weir and Flynn Garner controlling the moments when the backs would attack or the where the forwards would make the harder carries through the ASC’s 10s, 20s and 30s. Benjamin Bootes and Guy Salter were brilliant in and around the rucks, each making multiple carries dragging defenders behind them. All of the backs were having a field day, with some lovely cleans lines executed followed by great support from the outside backs. Gus Miller was in his usual attacking mood, shifting his way through the defence for a few lovely tries, he was also able supported by James Wells and Jack Malycon with Jack also scoring a wonderful try, smashing through three ASC defenders to score next to the posts.

The boys all aimed up for the entire match. Aidan Tyrrell was exceptional, playing his best game of the season. His combination with Guy Salter in both attack and defence will be one to watch across the next few seasons. I would also like to highlight the respect they treated the opponent as I had numerous comments from staff and ASC parents who appreciated the level of respect and sportsmanship exhibited by our Redlands boys.

This is a group of boys who have gone to another level this year. Despite the fact that they will miss out on Semi Finals, I cannot wait to see what this group achieves next year and in their first Opens/1stXV season in 2020. Well done 15s.

Summer Sport Choices

Summer Sport registration has now closed. Students will be emailed preliminary information in the coming week with regards to their choices. Summer Sport will start in Week 6.

Tennis

It was a tough weekend for all Redlands players. Another nail biter in Div 1, with St Patrick’s winning by the smallest of margins (4-4 35/36). Team 2 were not able to continue their winning form and were defeated by St Patrick’s (5-3). Team 3 had a tough day against St Patrick’s, going down (7-1). Team 4 continued to work hard for every point and ended up in a draw with St Patrick’s for the 2nd time this season (4-4 39/39). All ISA Tennis finals will be on this coming Saturday 18 August at Barker College from 8am.

Waterpolo

Our Junior Waterpolo teams are continuing to improve with more games being played. The girls came off the previous bye and had a strong win first up against a Stella Red, then had a close loss against Brigidine who seem to be the team to beat in their competition. Our Boys are getting the hang of their game play and strategy, however they unfortunately went down in both games against St Augustine’s and Pittwater.

IPSHA Sports

Our IPSHA sport season has now finished. In many areas we’ve had a successful season, with highlights in our Yr 3 and 4 Football. Our Yr 3 Football teams have shown some tremendous improvement and played beautiful football on their way to winning seasons. Thanks to everyone for their continued support of our sports programs over the winter.

Many of our Yr 5 and 6 teams have faced some difficulties this season. Be it through our own numbers or tough opposition, our teams have battled courageously showing great sportsmanship and team spirit throughout the season. I’m really confident that the learning opportunity that comes from players and teams being tested against adversity is one of the true great learnings from sport.

Winning certainly isn’t everything and the IPSHA philosophy of playing sport for the joy and exercise has been wholly embraced by our teams this season and it’s been a pleasure to watch.

Before school training for Winter Sports has also now concluded (except for Netball which continues on until Semis and Finals in the NSNA competition). Our team awards for the Winter season will be presented on Monday 16 September Junior School Assembly.

NSNA Netball

The run into NSNA’s finals is poised to be exciting with five of our six teams all in contention. Favourable results will see all five Redlands teams playing in the first week of finals.

Athletics

Our 60-athlete strong Redlands Athletics team is named and posted on Dunnet Hall noticeboard and selected members have been emailed. Runners have been put through their paces with SportSpeed coaches during Wednesday technique sessions. Runners will train again Wednesday 22 August and throwers and high jumpers have the opportunity to work with specific throw coaches on Thursday mornings 7-8am on the Junior School Oval. High jumpers will have access to coaching in the gym on Tuesday and Thursdays during lunchtime.

Summer Sports

Thanks to everyone for selecting Summer Sports so promptly. Arrangements are being put in place now for the Summer season and Summer Sport training begins on Wednesday 12 September. Fixtures for Basketball, Tennis and Cricket will begin in Term 4 and before school training for Basketball and Cricket will start in the coming weeks.

Photos

We love photos and showing off your great action shots from sports fixtures on Saturday. If anyone has any pics or takes any in the future, I love to use them to showcase our current teams and past teams on the rolling display in Dunnet Hall.
