Issue 23 2024 Term 3 Week 3 - 08 Aug 2024

From the Principal

Over the past few days I have been visiting our High Country Campus just outside of Jindabyne and seeing our Year 10 Winter School students immerse themselves in this special program. I have often said that our High Country Campus is an important part of the heart and soul of Redlands, and it has been wonderful to see it bustling with our students’ positive energy these past few days.

In recent weeks Ms Van de Peer and I have been speaking to parents and students from Preschool through to Year 8 about our Moonbah Program commencing next year for our Year 9 student where they will all have the opportunity to partake in an immersive, residential, experiential learning program either in Term 1 or Term 2.

Pleasingly, many of the future benefits for students participating in the Moonbah Program which we have been speaking about in these various forums, I have seen and heard firsthand from our Winter School students this week. In speaking to them, they have talked about how much they have already developed their self-confidence, independence and responsibility; how they have forged and strengthened relationships with other students; and how they have already gained new insights about themselves which they will take back with them to Sydney to assist them in their final two years of schooling.

The five key areas of our Redlands Student Wellbeing Framework (Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision-Making, Relationship Skills and Social Awareness) are clearly being profoundly developed from this experience.

(Some students have also told me how they have learned some excellent practical skills in terms of cleaning, meal preparation, vacuuming and washing clothes. However, they were not sure how much of this newfound knowledge they would share with their families when they return to Sydney, so parents, make sure to ask them!)

While it is great to see firsthand the current benefits of our Winter School program, it also fills me with tremendous excitement to know so many more students will be able to experience similar benefits from our Moonbah Program next year.

Last Friday, it was wonderful to see all three sections of the school come together for Jeans for Genes Day to support the 1 in 20 kids who face a birth defect or genetic disease. Denim was resplendent across the campuses and there were many yummy treats to enjoy from the various bake sales. Overall, Redlands raised just under $10,000 for this important cause making us once again the #1 School for donations. Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved for their support.

Last week in her Note Day article, Ms Van de Peer wrote about Yr 9 student, Amelie Swann’s, outstanding achievement representing Redlands at the School Nationals Swimming Championships where she finished 7th overall in her age group in the 50m butterfly and competed in two NSW relay teams. However, I would like to acknowledge Amelie, not for her swimming achievements, but for the character she displayed at the Championships.

I recently received an email from the NSW Swimming Manager who praised Amelie for her selflessness throughout the meet (joining one of the relay teams at short notice and helping them to finish 4th) and also for regularly supporting her teammates. As he said in his email to me, “Redlands should be very proud of her as both a swimmer and a person”. Congratulations, Amelie on representing yourself and your school in such a fine manner.

Giving Day

A reminder that on Wednesday 21 August we are excited to launch our major philanthropic campaign, Giving Day. Our Giving Day campaign supports the High Country Campus expansion and establishes another important means-tested scholarship in honour of Redlander Coralie Amos OAM.

Giving Day promises to be a fantastic day of celebration that will have a transformational impact for our students. I will personally be a part of the Giving Day team and look forward to connecting with members of our community on the day where we have 24 hours to reach our giving target of $400,000. Thanks to the incredible support of our matching gift donors, every donation on this day will be tripled, increasing the impact of everyone’s contributions significantly. For more information about our Giving Day and how you can get involved, please visit the Foundation section.

Community Update

We are thrilled to unveil our Redlands Supporter gear, designed with passion and precision to represent the spirit of our players, teams, supporters and School.

Our launch range has been championed by the Redlands Parents and Friends Association and provides a wonderful selection of items from which to show your support of Redlands whether you’re cheering from the sidelines and stands or supporting from afar. Our students and coaches are excited to see a new sea of blue and gold enthusiastically cheering them on in the crowd. Our beanies have already been worn with pride (and proving popular) by our Snowsport community on and off the slopes of Thredbo and Perisher through the recent term break.

Supporter gear orders are now open exclusively through our online retailer Academy Sport.  We are expecting these items to sell quickly so don’t miss out … the Redlands Supporter range can be viewed and ordered here. Supporter Polos and Jackets can be tried on for size at our Uniform Shop to ensure correct fit with orders then placed and delivered through Academy Sport.  Please note that this range is for parents, carers, friends and alumni of Redlands, and not for our students.

View Flyer for More Details

Our Redlands Supporter gear is a community driven program with all profits returned to the Redlands community for investment in community programs.

Festival of Redlands – Shining a Light on 140 Years – Saturday 19 October

The countdown is ON – just over 10 weeks to go until the gates of the Junior School open to host the Festival of Redlands.

As we celebrate 140 years of Redlands, this first-of-its-kind event will be a community-led day of games, sports, arts, drama, music, refreshments and a showcasing of our High Country Campus.

As the big day inches closer, our vision for a day put on for and by our community is slowly coming to life:

  • Kids (and adults) alike can bring out their inner Spiderman as they scale the Giant Climbing Wall.
  • The handball battle to end all handball battles will take place on the courts. Stay tuned for more details and contact us to register your interest to support.
  • Go back in time to see how you would’ve looked as a student across the years with the photo booth and treasure chest of various iterations of the school uniform over the years.
  • Weren’t able to make it down to Thredbo this year? Not to worry, Friends of Snow Sports is making sure you can still carve it up!”
  • EOIs are currently open to all of the Sports for what games you would like to host. Have an idea? Contact us.

Thank you to all those that volunteered to help cut the bunting flags that will be adorning receptions in the coming weeks. An extra big thank you to Kate Goodsall for leading the charge. In true community fashion, some Dance and Theatre Mums that are well versed with cutting and sewing fabulous costumes were connected to turn their attention to giving a new life to old school uniforms. Many hands make light work, and a good accompaniment to Olympics viewing!

Contact us if you would like to find out more about current opportunities to be involved with bringing the Festival of Redlands to fruition and the RPFA will be in touch!

Unplugged Coding

Thanks to many parent volunteers, the Prep School students have a rich and varied choice of Wellbeing Clubs to attend at lunchtime. From construction through to friendships, these are a beautiful option in a playground that can seem very big at times! As well as a great opportunity to explore different interests.

This term welcomes the launch of a new Friday club, Unplugged Coding. This club explores coding basics through games, without using any devices!

Born from an interest in fostering the digital skills and safety of our children, Anita and Daniella’s aim is to promote problem-solving and critical thinking skills while having fun.

Their first session last week was great fun and is already attracting an excited following amongst the children! This week, they’ll be making binary bracelets – an activity they hope will especially engage more girls.

What a fantastic addition to the roster, especially amidst the growing conversation about promoting tech skills in our kids without devices.

If any parents or carers would like to join in facilitating an “unplugged coding” lunch club, please contact Daniella.

Year 11 Industry Day

On Wednesday Year 11 had their very valuable Industry Day experience where they had the opportunity to:

  • Familiarise themselves with a workplace;
  • Gain an understanding of the range of professional roles that exist within an organisation and how these are projected to change in the future;
  • Learn about the ‘soft skills’ employers regard as important when recruiting, and
  • Engage in networking with members of the organisation.

I had the opportunity to accompany the students to Snap Inc led by Redlands parent Katherine Clement. Mr Jeffrey Mesina, one of our Year 5 teachers, joined me for this fabulously productive and inspiring day, which culminated in the students using SnapChat to survive a zombie apocalypse – the winning team was made up of Joshua Farrant, Filip Feller, Yumeto Lee, Harry Ashby and Rory Howe. Students collaborated together using a design framework shared with them by members of the Snap Inc team. They learned from Katherine about how the organisation works, its values and mission. She shared a secret new marketing campaign with the students and garnered their opinion on a range of topics impacting young people – so important given the main demographic of SnapChat being 13-24  year olds. Students learned from a diverse group of Snap Inc employees and had the opportunity to zoom into the Santa Monica office to meet with three American interns who are in their final years of university. It was a really fun day – with a fantastic view of Sydney harbour in a plush city-setting – and we appreciated the generosity and fabulous spirit that Katharine and her team, brought to the Redlands participants.

A huge thank you to all of our Year 11 Industry Day partners, many of whom were Redlands alumni and parents:

  • ABC
  • Australian Payments Plus
  • Carmichael Thompkins Property Group
  • Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers
  • First Sentier Investors
  • John Holland
  • Macquarie University Psychology
  • MHDP Architects
  • ResMed

Big Science Competition

The Big Science Competition is a 50-minute online competition testing scientific knowledge, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Run by Australian Science Innovations (ASI), the same organisation that runs the Junior Science Olympiads, the Big Science Competition is distinguished by challenging questions that set scientific principles in real-life contemporary contexts which require students to demonstrate understanding of how theory applies in authentic, real-world situations. Due to the complex nature of the questions, the students invited to participate had to demonstrate prior high achievement in Science and/or receive a teacher nomination.

Student results have been published on their Year Group pages in Note Day.

Celebrating Book Week (Week 5)

During week 5 this term, the Library team will be celebrating Australian School Library Day, a significant event across Australian schools.  Conveniently, it is wedged within Book Week, which celebrates the love of reading.

The entire week will be all about the incredible resources that school libraries offer, highlighting the importance of qualified library staff and the impact libraries have on the school community at large.

All week, students can take part in the festivities and share in the joy of literature within Roseby Library as well as some timetabled classes.

Sweet Success: Join The Gardening Club

This week at the Gardening Club,  we witnessed an extraordinary moment as Calvin Macnab from Year 7 harvested a massive sweet potato during our Monday lunchtime session. This achievement not only showcases the potential of our garden but also the dedication and enthusiasm of our young gardeners.

The Redlands Gardening Club meets every Monday and Thursday during lunchtime on the LH Rooftop. It’s a vibrant space where students come together to:

  • Grow and harvest fresh produce
  • Design and personalize garden sections
  • Choose and plant a variety of produce
  • Engage in digging, watering, and mulching activities
  • Build essential plant supports
  • Enjoy delicious snacks straight from the garden

Whether your child is a novice or an experienced gardener, everyone is welcome to join. The Gardening Club is more than just about plants; it’s about community, creativity, and contributing to a greener school environment. Together, we can cultivate not only a beautiful garden but also lifelong skills and friendships.

The goal of the Gardening Club is to make our school greener and more sustainable, one plant at a time.

Checkmate Thursdays: Join the Redlands Chess Club!

Every Thursday at Redlands, lunchtime in room H.19 transforms into a lively chess club gathering. This weekly event has become a staple for students eager to engage in the strategic world of chess. With tables filled with boards and pieces ready to battle, the club welcomes players of all skill levels—from seasoned veterans to curious beginners.

The atmosphere is enriching and supportive, allowing members to connect through friendly matches and spirited conversations. Each game is not just about winning; it’s an opportunity to learn and grow, with players often exchanging tips and strategies.

Adding to the excitement, the chess club hosts competitions that are the highlight of the semester. These events attract participants from all grades, igniting a friendly, competitive spirit. Players concentrate fiercely, while friends stand around to support them, fostering a sense of community that enhances the entire experience.

As lunchtime ends, conversations about tactics and memorable moves linger, reinforcing friendships formed over the chessboard. At Redlands, the chess club is more than a game; it’s a thriving community where enthusiasm for chess unites students and sparks great connections.

Service

On Friday 2 August, the Redlands Community supported Jeans for Genes Day. It was a fantastic day where the atmosphere was buzzing, as staff and students spent the day in their denim, all to raise money for the Childrens’ Research Medical Institute. The highlight of the day was the bake sale on the Senior Campus as it revealed the willingness of our Redlands students to serve, particularly Year 8. At the beginning of the term, Year 8 were given the challenge to lead the bake sale, to give their time and energy to a cause that is particularly meaningful to them and they definitely rose to the occasion. The bake sale was one of the biggest in living Redlands memory and combined with the money Senior students donated for wearing their jeans, raised $4463.90! So, a special thank you to Year 8 and all our bakers across the Secondary School who made that possible. Thank you as well to the Year 11 and 12s who helped on the day, with a particular shoutout to our Service Captains Antonia Morgan and Will Algar who have done an incredible job in their role all year.

Thank you also to the Prep and Junior Campuses for their involvement in raising money on the day and to everyone who donated online. In total, Redlands has donated $9 240.25 to the Childrens’ Research Medical Institute and is the top donating school – a wonderful testament to our community’s heart for giving.

Sustainability

In Term Two, the Redlands Senior Campus launched an initiative to introduce reusable canteen containers. This program aims to significantly reduce the amount of packaging waste sent to landfill while also cutting costs for the school. Students have embraced the initiative, consistently returning their containers after use, which are then washed and reused for future canteen orders. A term after its introduction, the process of returning canteen containers has become second nature to our students. Thanks to this collective effort, we have successfully prevented 7,382 containers from ending up in landfill.

In Term One, the Redlands Junior Campus launched an initiative to introduce reusable canteen containers. This program aims to significantly reduce the amount of packaging waste sent to landfill while also cutting costs for the school. Students have embraced the initiative, consistently returning their containers after use, which are then washed and reused for future canteen orders. The students have been proactive in returning their containers and enjoy eating from them too! Thanks to this collective effort, we have successfully prevented 9,766 containers from ending up in landfill.

School Climate Survey

Starting from Week 4, students will be invited to complete a School Climate Survey.

The survey is anonymous and aims to gather data from the student body regarding the climate at Redlands. It provides an opportunity for students to give feedback on the school environment, acknowledge peers who contribute positively or voice any concerns. Once the data is collected, it will be provided to the Year Advisor, Head of Secondary School, Counsellors, and the Dean of Students. This information will help inform effective interventions and foster our inclusive community.

Yr 8-12
Dance Curriculum Showcase

Last week, all dance students from Yr 8 to Yr 12 performed multiple pieces in the Dance Curriculum Showcase. Students took the audience on an emotional journey and captivated our attention from the beginning. Congratulations to all students for their time, effort and determination in their preparation and brilliant performances.

HSC students Maddie Lamport and Summer-Eve-Smyth performed Core Performance and Major Study Performance which was teacher choreographed and they both had student dancers perform their own compositions that they had created and taught themselves.

IB students Josie Bannon, Anabelle Cullen, Lara Farrell, Halcyon Hunt, Mikaela Hunter, Ashley Stapleton and Tiana Vatandoust all performed two performance works which were teacher choreographed.

Student Highlight: Jasmine Black

Next week, Jasmine has been invited to complete at the Girls All Schools Tournament in Perth. She will be representing NSW in a team of 16 players against other teams from other states. This opportunity came out of her performance at ISA, CIS and the NSW All Schools Tournaments. It is a demanding job being an elite athlete and balancing her dedication to her academics and her position as School Captain.

Jasmine says the biggest thing she has learned this year, more than anything, is positive self-talk. Due to her position as a goalkeeper, it can be quite isolating at times and her position is often the first to get the blame, which can be challenging to navigate. Therefore, she has learned how to find strength in her own abilities, to rise above judgement and to continue believing in herself and her strengths. These lessons translate to her daily life at Redlands well and she continues to remain committed in all aspects of her Yr 12 experience.

Year 11

Industry Day

This week, Yr 11 students had the invaluable experience of Industry Day, where they had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the professional world. Throughout the day, students familiarised themselves with a workplace, getting a firsthand look at the daily operations and environment of a real-world organisation, bridging the gap between classroom learning and professional practice.

They gained an understanding of the range of professional roles within the organisation, exploring the various responsibilities and how these roles interconnect and contribute to the organisation’s success. Additionally, they learned about the expected evolution of these roles in the future, preparing them for the dynamic nature of the job market.

The day also emphasised the importance of ‘soft skills’ that employers regard as crucial when recruiting. Students discovered why communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability are essential for success in any career and how they can develop these skills further.

Furthermore, the students engaged in networking with members of the organisation, having the chance to interact with professionals, ask questions, and build connections. This networking opportunity provided valuable insights and potential mentorship that could benefit their future career paths.

Industry Day proved to be a significant step in preparing our Yr 11 students for their future careers, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills to thrive in the ever-changing professional landscape.

A huge thank you to all of our partners, many of whom were Redlands alumni and parents:

  • ABC
  • Australian Payments Plus
  • Carmichael Thompkins Property Group
  • Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers
  • First Sentier Investors
  • John Holland
  • Macquarie University Psychology
  • MHDP Architects
  • ResMed
  • Snap Inc.

Lastly, and most importantly, thank you to our Careers Advisors, Ms Hurst and Ms Fowler for their tremendous efforts to organise and coordinate such an incredible day for our students.

School Climate Survey – Week 4

Starting from Week 4, students will be invited to complete a School Climate Survey.

The survey is anonymous and aims to gather data from the student body regarding the climate at Redlands. It provides an opportunity for students to give feedback on the school environment, acknowledge peers who contribute positively or voice any concerns. Once the data is collected, it will be provided to the Year Advisor, Head of Secondary School, Counsellors, and the Dean of Students. This information will help inform effective interventions and foster our inclusive community.

Week 4 is Science Week

Next week, Redlands will celebrate Science Week with the opportunity for students to engage with a range of fun activities to develop their scientific knowledge and skills. Students will have the opportunity to have breakfast with a scientist, partake in astronomy evenings, learn more about forensic science and show off their aeronautical skills in a paper aeroplane competition. Students are encouraged to check out the various events on offer and to get involved.

Tickets Are Selling For Away!

Away by Michael Gow, will be performed by Redlands students and is set in 1960s Australia, following three families on holiday, each grappling with personal issues. Away transcends class distinctions and xenophobia, demonstrating how understanding and empathy can bring us together.

Congratulations to the following Year 10s who achieved such great results, especially Leela Gohil, who topped the grade with a High Distinction:

Step Beyond Awards

At our Stage 5 Assembly this week we had two Year 9 students receive Step Beyond awards as nominated by their peers and staff at the school.

Congratulations to Katie Jennings who was nominated as ‘a Year 9 student who embodies kindness, positivity, and perseverance. And, to Amelie Swann who was nominated for her tireless enthusiasm and support of her teammates at the School Sport Australia Championships last week.

Jeans for Genes Day

Last Friday our tutor group (9MB) was fortunate enough to participate in holding the Senior School Bake Sale to raise funds for Jeans for Genes Day. We found it a great opportunity to be involved within the Redlands community and engage with other year groups. We were thrilled that we could change the lives of young people living with genetic conditions. The school community raised $9,240, with this money the organisation ‘Jeans for Genes’ will be able to use it to help find a cure for genetic disorders or use it for equipment to make young children of Australia’s lives better. We are so proud and grateful to have had this opportunity.

Samantha Beck and Alice Haggman (Yr 9 MB)

Commerce ‘Intrapreneurship Program

Our Year 9 Commerce ‘Intrapreneurship Program’ started in earnest this term, the focus of which is organisations with impact. We have engaged six partner organisations, and our students are working in small teams to ameliorate a real-world challenge provided by the partner organisation. The cohort enjoyed a guest lecture of the ‘triple bottom line’ led by Sangeeta Leach, current parent and Board member for the Wayside Chapel. Sangeeta walked us through organisational structures that facilitate the triple bottom line– unpacking the difference between everything from charities to BCorps, to social enterprises. She also shared how letting your light shine for others can be a defining feature of your professional life. They also heard from Joe Kwon, founder and CEO of ConFit Pathways who shared his incredible journey of turning around his life, from incarceration to running a successful social enterprise.

ConFit was born out of the desire to create opportunities for himself and others– those who had experienced incarceration. His drive led to the Westpac 100 Social Change Fellowship and finally to ConFit Pathways, another arm of his non-profit that employs former adult inmates to mentor and run fitness programs for young people inside youth justice centres. Fitness is the language that allows him to connect  with young people, once that connection is there they explore issues like self-worth, gratitude and the value of education as a pathway out of the criminal justice system.

Next Tuesday, 13th August, Year 9 will visit their partner organisation to learn more about its mission, impact, identified areas for growth and organisational structure. To prepare, they are engaging in structured research and drafting interview questions. We are looking forward to welcoming the partner organisation to Redlands in late September when our Year 9 teams will pitch their innovative ideas back to the organisations.

SEED Program

A group of Year 9 students were also fortunate to take part in the SEED program. The program is a collaboration between Loreto Kiribilli, Taronga Zoo and Future Anything. They spend the day at the zoo where they were able to access experts, engage with wildlife and activate their prior knowledge of environmental issues that require our urgent attention. Students have the option of collaborating across schools throughout the 30 hour course to work online and face-to-face in teams. They’ll think like entrepreneurs and try to ameliorate their chosen issue before regrouping at Taronga to present their findings. We look forward to supporting these students as they work though the program.

Week 3 – Looking Good in our Denim

On Friday of last week, the Redlands community came out in force for Jeans for Genes Day, donating generously towards supporting medical research and raising funds for children and families living with genetic disorders. Our Yr 8 cohort, as primary bakers for the event’s charity bake sale, were fantastic, producing more cakes, cookies, slices and muffins than the eye could see, and allowing everyone to have a much-needed sugar pick-me-up at the end of the week. The offering of sumptuous baked goods was the largest we have ever seen at Redlands!

I want to offer a huge thank you to all those students and families who put in time and effort to bake something for the event. Our focus this term in Yr 8 is on service – thinking beyond ourselves and seeking to help others. So, it was wonderful to see so many of our cohort embodying this ethos early on, by providing for our Jeans for Genes charity initiative. I also want to extend my thanks to Ms Peterson, Sensei Abe and Ms Wang for spearheading the effort in motivating our bakers and coordinating the logistics on the day. Well done and thanks too to our Yr 11 helpers who were fantastic in selling the baked goods to the endless crowds of hungry Redlanders!

As a school we raised over $9,000 on the day, making us the number one donor in the School category for ‘Jeans for Genes’ Day. Amazing!

AAS Testing

Yesterday, students spent the first half of the day in Redlands Hall completing Academic Assessment Services testing. This testing is designed to help offer a picture of student abilities in areas like mathematics, abstract reasoning, problem solving and general reading and writing skills. Students approached the testing with maturity and excellent focus. The AAS head supervisor was particularly commendatory of everyone’s efforts. Well done Yr 8!

Student-Led Conferences

Last night Yr 8 engaged in their student-led conferences for 2024. It has been wonderful to hear of the positive feedback from teachers today as to the confident approach students took to facilitating these discussions between parents / carers and teachers, and also the mature reflections students were able to offer on their performance and engagement this year. Hopefully, such reflection will continue to be a strong part of each student’s toolkit as they move forward this semester and into their Stage 5 studies next year.

Clayfield College Exchange

At the start of this week, several Yr 8 students were given the opportunity to visit Clayfield College in Brisbane for a couple of days of exchange, to experience daily school life in a different educational institution. Students subsequently attended Redlands today with their Clayfield host students, introducing them to how our school operates.

Well done to Alexis Castan, Claudia Chmielewski, Daisy Mann, Anay Mishra Mall, Oliwia Polok, Lily van Hulsen and Mackenzie Willis who were all part of the program. We look forward to hearing more of their experiences in Brisbane.

Gardening Club

This week some wonderful Yr 7 Students joined us on the rooftop garden to water, mulch, organise, plant and pick our home grown produce. Calvin took home this enormous sweet potato and made some delicious chips for his family. We encourage more students to join us for this co-curricular club and try to use our produce to make some new and excited dishes at home.

Subject Focus – Technology

Yr 7 Technology classes have been working hard on creating their Looms this Term. All students have engaged with this activity and we are looking forward to seeing their finished work.

Subject Selection – Yr 7 into Yr 8

The time has come for us to ask you and your children to select Languages and Arts subjects for Year 8.

Redlands places great emphasis on these subjects and our 7 to 10 curriculum structure reflects this. We require our students to continue one of their languages from Year 7 into Year 8. We also ask them to select one of the Arts subjects – Dance, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre or Visual Arts to study in Year 8. The subject selection booklet provides detailed information on the subjects to be studied in Year 8. The booklet also explains how it is possible to study two languages in Year 8 and what students intending to study the International Baccalaureate in Years 11 and 12 need to bear in mind when choosing their language for Year 8. An overview of the Redlands curriculum structure in Years 7 and 8 is also outlined. We encourage you to read this booklet and discuss the options with your child.

Subject selection is a web-based process. In coming days, your child will be sent a web code to their school email from a site called Edval. The last few pages of the booklet explain how to make their choices via the Edval site. The due date for subject selection submissions has now been revised to Friday 30 August 2024, to assist students in making a more informed choice of Language for Year 8.

On Tuesday 6th August, Ms Rolon (Dean of Studies 7-10) will speak to the Yr 7 students as a year group to explain the electives and the process and their tutors will be supporting them during pastoral care time next week.

For further information on Yr 7 into 8 subject selection, please click HERE

Digital Citizenship

Over the last few weeks. Year 7 students have been developing their understanding of the importance of responsible and ethical online behaviour. Key issues which Year 7 explore include maintaining online privacy, combating cyberbullying, and managing their digital footprint. Year 7 students will learn the importance of respecting others, being accountable, and understand the importance of using privacy settings which are essential safe online practices. To promote a positive online community, students will learn how how to communicate respectfully, support inclusivity, educate peers, and model good behaviour. By embracing these principles, students will help create a safe and respectful digital environment where everyone feels valued. Further information can be found on the E-Safety Website, NSW Government Digital Citizenship and ReachOut.

Head of Junior School

We are looking forward to this afternoon’s Junior Music Festival, a highlight of our school calendar showcasing the impressive talents of our Junior School students. We know that participation in performing arts offers numerous benefits for students. As well as fostering creativity, performance opportunities boost self-confidence and enhance collaboration. From a learning perspective engaging in music can improve cognitive abilities, such as memory and spatial reasoning, which can positively impact academic performance.

I acknowledge that the road to such performances is paved with preparation, practice, and hard work. Our students have dedicated many hours perfecting their pieces, working both individually and in groups. The Junior Music Festival is an opportunity for our students to shine, express themselves and hopefully to develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. I thank our music staff and the broader staff team for their commitment and dedication to make the JMF such a special and valuable event in our school.   We look forward to seeing our students’ hard work and passion come to life on stage.

Olympians Come to Visit!

A Message from Ms Longworth

This week the prep assembly transformed into our very own Olympic Media Centre, Year 1 students Willow Bamber, Andrew Wu, Isabel Hogue, Jemima Joyce, Mackenzie Lloyd, Isabelle Bateman, Bodhi Sepulohniam, Oliver Haswell, interviewed Olympians Karyn Gojnich and James Talbot.

Karyn has represented Australia at 3 Olympics Games for Sailing.  James competed in the Paralympics for rowing. The athletes inspired us with stories of their Olympic journey, describing their training schedules, most memorable moments from the Olympics, how to persevere through setbacks, life lessons they have learned through sport, their role models, as well as interesting stories about the athletes village and competing at the ultimate level.  Karyn and James were extremely generous and brought in very special items from their Olympic games including official Australian uniforms from the opening ceremonies, zoot suits, Akubra’s, jackets and hats.

Students were able to high five real Olympians and the delight when they were able to see a real Olympic medal was remarkable.  Year 12 student, Daisy Thomas, represented Australia at the Youth Olympics this year for Freestyle skiing, winning a Silver Medal which she graciously shared with the Prep School.  What a phenomenal achievement.

On behalf of all the staff and students, we would like to thank Ms Longworth for all her hard work and enthusiasm in making the Redlands prep Olympics experience such a memorable and fun experience for everyone.

Jeans for Genes Day

A big thank you to all families for supporting Jeans for Genes Day last Friday. As always, the generosity of families is so very much appreciated.

The combined donations of Redlands House, Prep and Junior Schools came to $1 216.35. The overall P-12 donations amounted to $9,240.25.

Book Week is nearly here, and we are excited about the 2024 theme, Reading is Magic

The purpose of Book Week is to foster a love of reading in children and to celebrate children’s literature. For that reason, we will celebrate in the Preparatory School by looking at two Australian picture books, The Concrete Garden by Bob Graham and an oldie, but goodie, The Magic Hat by Mem Fox.

There will be many activities happening in prep that week with the highlight being the Prep School Magic Hat Day on Tuesday 20th August.

Your child can come to school wearing a magic hat! They may wear just a hat, or the hat may be part of a whole outfit. Please talk to your child about who wears hats. It might be a book character. For example, a wizard or a goblin, but it might also be part of a person’s work clothes outfit. For example, a chef, fireman, magician, cowboy etc. Talk about the magic that their hat might possess. What can it do?

At our prep assembly on this day, children will showcase their hats and talk about their magical properties, or they could even talk about what their hat symbolises or what its’ purpose is.

Book Week is also a good reminder to parents, that no child is too old to be read to. Talk to your children about what they like reading, what you like reading and what you could read together, then come to the library and borrow a serial for Book Week or a book for each night before bed.

The Reading Is Magic theme for 2024 brings with it an air of wonderment, highlighting fantastical stories, spellbinding narratives, and the wizardry of words that can whisk us away from our daily realities to worlds unknown.

Please drop in to the Lucy Hill Library if you would like more information or to have a chat with Mrs Roberts about the events of the week. It is sure to be a lot of fun.

Lunchtime Sharing

At Redlands we are always encouraging, modelling and ensuring our students are eating healthy food for recess and lunch. Sadly, we are finding a growing number of students (especially in Year 2) bringing junk food in lunch boxes to ‘trade’ with other students. This is really disappointing for us to see. I am asking our families to please stop sending ‘treats and unhealthy food options to school. Any junk food found will be taken off students and returned home in school bags.

Giving Day

On Wednesday 21 August we are excited to launch our major philanthropic campaign, Giving Day. Our Giving Day campaign supports the High Country Campus expansion and establishes another important means-tested scholarship in honour of Redlander Coralie Amos OAM.

Giving Day promises to be a fantastic day of celebration that will have a transformational impact for our students. I look forward to the Redlands community coming together on the day where we’ll have 24 hours to reach our giving target of $400,000. Thanks to the incredible support of our matching gift donors, every donation on this day will be tripled, increasing the impact of everyone’s contributions significantly.

For more information about our Giving Day and how you can get involved, please visit the Foundation section or our website.

Father’s Day Celebration

We are excited to invite you to join us in celebrating Father’s Day on Monday 2 September from 7.45 am at the Junior Campus Piazza.  Please note that bookings will close on Wednesday 28 August, reservations are necessary for catering purposes.

In the event of rain, the celebration will continue as planned, with arrangements made to accommodate refreshments undercover.

Secondary Sport

We are coming into the final few weeks of the Winter Season, which for many if not all of the Year 12 students who are still currently playing sport, is their last opportunity to represent Redlands and Redlands Sport, some of these students have graced the fields & courts since Year 7 and some have been lucky enough to represent the school since IPSHA Sport has begun in Year 3. A huge thank you to those students who have continued to show up week in week out, ensuring they are disciplined enough to manage both their academics and co-curricular activities throughout the times of stress and used these sessions to take a break from their studies and stick to the routine.

I recently watched a clip about why discipline is important, which I think is a great saying particularly as students move into the next phase of their lives, whether that be completing their final years of school, moving into leadership positions, starting new subjects or even trying a new sport for the first time.

‘I’ll tell you why discipline is so important. It’s the strong form of self love, it’s ignoring something you want right now for something better later on. Discipline reveals the commitment you have to your dreams, especially on days when you don’t want to. The future you is depending on the current you to keep the promises you made to yourself yesterday.’

Tomorrow students and parents will be sent the 2024/25 Summer Sport registration link via Redlands Pulse. A few reminders:

  • All students must complete 1 representative sport per year (including in Year 12).
  • Students who are currently enrolled in a 2024 Winter Representative Sport may choose either:
    • 2024/25 Summer Representative Sport
    • 2024/25 Summer Non-Representative Sport
  • Students who are currently enrolled in a Winter Non-Representative Sport must choose a 2024/25 Summer Representative Sport
  • All Non-Representative Sports have an additional cost involved (available via Redlands Pulse – Secondary School Sport)
  • The following Summer Representative Sports have a cost involved:
    • Rowing
    • Sailing

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)

Well Done.

This weekend all the girls will be away to Chevalier, Barker and St Andrew’s Cathedral and the information have been sent to all the girls specially the teams that travelling to Chevalier.

Our Boys Football program played a tough and very good opposition Oakhill College in Round 9 and we got a few good results, looking at the ISA table there some teams chasing the semi-finals spots and we will be chasing wins this weekend in Round 10 to give a chance to qualify for the semifinals.

Hockey

Our hockey teams were spread from suburb to coast this weekend, with the Firsts and Seconds travelling to Central Coast Grammar School, whilst the Thirds took on Barker at their home ground.

The Firsts played a very exciting game, with the most exciting moments happening right at the end. With 1.5 minutes left, CCGS scored from a short corner to even the scoreline to 3-3. With a triumphant yell, they returned to the halfway line, sure they had clinched the draw. Meanwhile, our captain Jess ran the ball to the halfway line, impatiently waiting for the umpire to blow the whistle. As soon as it sounded, with 18 seconds left on the clock, Jess was off, running past all 10 players to shoot and…. Score!! Overall, the game was a fantastic one – the best that the team has played with lots of beautiful passing, some wonderful back transfers and goals: 2 from Sahara Nicholas and 1 more from Jess. A special shoutout to Abbie Sewell who played an outstanding game. This week we have a bye before heading into the Semi Finals.

The Seconds played straight after the Firsts. They showed great persistence and determination, especially given many of their regular teammates were absent. There was some wonderful teamwork and three great goals scored. The final scoreline was against them with a 6-3 loss thanks to a couple of particularly good players on the CCGS team and some quality short corners. The Seconds live to fight another day – with one more round game between them and the Semi Finals.

The Thirds have gone from strength to strength this season and it has been wonderful to watch them grow in strength and confidence. They took on Barker on Saturday, who last time they played, decisively won. This time, Redlands were a real match for them. It was a very close game, with Barker unfortunately scoring the winning goal in the last 30 seconds to leave the scoreline at 2-1 to Barker. The team can be particularly proud of their strong press that kept the ball down in their attacking half for the majority of the game time and their impressive tackling and ball skills that helped them consistently get past their opposition. This was a massive improvement from their past games as everyone was a lot stronger and more confident. A special shout out to Aven as goal scorer! The Thirds too have one more round game to decide if they will progress to the Semi Finals.

The End of Season Hockey Celebration tickets are now available! Purchase tickets now by clicking on the image below:

As we approach the final weekend of round games before the finals, we are excited to see that Redlands Netball is on track to have the majority of our teams advance to the semi-finals—an incredible achievement! This success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all our players throughout the season. Here’s how the finals will be structured:

Junior Sport

Winter Sport- Rugby and Football

This week sees the final match for our Junior School Football and Rugby teams as they wrap up their Term 2 and 3 season. Friday evening Football training continues for those students who registered with Norths 3 weeks ago. Thank you to those students who played in these sports for this season. Meanwhile our girls AFL and Touch Football has just commenced and will continue all term.

If your child was a goalkeeper and has one of our Redlands goalkeeper jerseys at home can you please return it to the sport office so a replacement fee on your school can be avoided. If you have any Rugby or Football boots that are too small or are not needed next season please feel free to send them in to the sport office as Redlands has several organisations that we distribute these too.

Athletics Carnival Entrant Numbers

As we prepare for the upcoming Athletics Carnival, please remind your child to start memorising their entrant numbers. Each student will need to have their unique entrant number written clearly on their forearm on the day of the event The entrant number is crucial for our carnival programme, as it includes details like the student’s full name, date of birth, age group, and house colour. It also helps us allocate house points and track participation.

Drama and Theatre

Up up and Away, break a leg it’s Opening Night tonight! Wishing all the amazing cast and crew all the best for a fantastic run.

If you’ve not got a ticket yet, grab one, there are some seats available here.

Here is a sneak peek from rehearsals at the Zenith this week:

Year 9 Children’s Theatre Performance

This week our year 9 students had the incredible opportunity to perform group-devised pieces for audiences from Redlands House and Kindergarten. This opportunity formed the assessment for their unit on Pantomime and Children’s Theatre. This is the first year we’ve been able to invite audiences from the Junior School to the drama studio and the experience was incredibly positive for all involved. Even I was shocked by the infectious enthusiasm of our audience, which served to lift and propel the Year 9 students to perform at the best of their ability. I hope it was as beneficial an experience for the little ones too. Below you’ll find a brief recap from two students who performed on Monday, as half of the cohort is performing as Note Day gets released on Friday.

I’d like to thank Georgina Knox from the Junior School and Chemane Huon from Redlands House for their invaluable assistance in organizing this opportunity. Additionally, we had a number of other staff and parent volunteers help shepherd and supervise students, which made the entire experience run much more smoothly – thank you to all of those who helped. Finally, the support of Kathryn Smith and Sam Hawkins in the drama department was critical in ensuring the success of the event, but the lion’s share of the organisational work was done by Sam Novis, who has just left the school to pursue other opportunities overseas. Thank you to you all for taking such a big part in creating a new and exciting chance for our students to engage with the wider school community. We hope to do it again next year!

Lincoln Gidney
Drama and Theatre Teacher

Student Reflections

Performing for preschool kids as part of our Year 9 assessment was both exciting and challenging. Our task was to create a 10-minute play to engage an audience of kids from Redlands House.

We prepared for this assessment by studying pantomime techniques and incorporating these techniques into a play. Our group constructed, rehearsed and performed our own adaption of Cinderella. With many hours across two terms going into this assessment, it was incredibly exciting to see the children’s reactions to our play. The performance was so fun as the children’s enthusiastic reactions and genuine engagement made all our rehearsals and practice well worth it.

India Dutton, Year 9 Drama Student

This assessment was a mix of exciting and thrilling as I got to experience one of the most complex and over-the-top assessments in drama so far. This assessment was to create and perform an original piece of children’s theatre, that we got the chance to perform in front of audiences from Kindergarten and Redland House.

We had many ups and downs when rehearsing and writing our piece, but when we performed for them we all found it to be so much fun performing for a younger audience. They enjoyed it so much and as we were doing a pantomime piece they were entertained and joined in on the fun. It was amazing to see them respond so fast and have so much energy and enthusiasm for the show. I was not expecting how much they brought their energy, shouting out and laughing along with our over-the-top performance.

Eva Blundell, Year 9 Drama Student

Music

Prepare for takeoff – The beloved Junior Music Festival is taking you on a trip around the world tonight, with our production Postcards from Abroad!  Whilst this afternoon is set to be enormously fun, the students’ excitement even in the lead up to today has been palpable. Joyous singing and playing has been resounding in Music lessons for months now!

Our Junior Music Teachers and Specialist Music Tutors, capably led in this production by Mrs Katherine Moses, (Subject Coordinator – Junior School Music), are incredible at what they do. They enrich the lives of our students by skilfully infusing complex curricular understandings and aural skill foundations within the music curriculum or the past term!  Our Music team are experts at what they do.

‘Thank yous’ are also extended to Mr Holden and our Year 3-6 class teachers who have rallied in generous support of this event also. Today’s event has been a team effort and a testament to the dedication of our Redlands community.

A video is being produced of the event and we look forward to sharing this with families in due course.
