Issue 23 2023 Term 3 Week 4 - 10 Aug 2023

From The Principal

As many of you are aware, our School Motto, “Let your light shine”, is taken from the Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus says, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven”. It is therefore fitting that service to others and service learning are central pillars of a Redlands education.

It has been pleasing to see this service to others shining brightly over the first part of this term. Last Friday there were fundraising and awareness raising initiatives across both the Junior and Senior Campuses for Jeans for Genes Day, supporting medical research to find treatments and cures for kids with genetic diseases. Pleasingly, the Redlands community has thus far raised $6,226 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute – more than any other school.

On Wednesday Katie Zyner, Redlander from the Class of 2005 and Senior Research Officer at the Children’s Medical Research Institute, spoke to Secondary School students about her work, the importance of Jeans for Genes Day and how her Redlands journey led to her current role.

While these larger whole school events are wonderful, the everyday service initiatives our students are involved in are just as important. This past Wednesday, Year 10 students ran a hot chocolate stall to raise money for Rough Edges, a charity supporting people who are homeless or marginalised; every Monday morning before school Year 11 students serve breakfast at Matthew Talbot House in Woolloomooloo, a hostel and support centre for homeless and marginalised men; and every Thursday at lunch students connect with residents from the Bougainvillea Retirement Centre next door to the Senior Campus.

Finally, over the course of this term, our Yr 12 students have been selling their Class of 2023 Sports Towels and Tote Bags to raise money for their Legacy Gift to the School in support of the means-tested Scholarship Fund. These items can be purchased here. For more information, please see the Foundation section of Note Day.

It is wonderful to know that we are truly living our motto and to see the good deeds of our students regularly shining brightly in so many different ways.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our Gala Ball this Saturday evening.

Uniform Development Update

We are in the final stages of our uniform redevelopment process and look forward to sharing it with our community later this term.

It is the first time the uniform has been reviewed in over 40 years and our Uniform Committee (comprising student, parent, staff, and Board representatives from across the School) has worked with leading Australian designer Jonathan Ward on developing a uniform that reflects the contemporary culture of the School and will be worn with pride by students.

Value, cost, sustainability, and easy-care properties have been a central focus of the Uniform Committee. These have been addressed through the development of a trans-seasonal uniform; the use of newly developed fabrics that are lightweight, durable, and comfortable; and a uniform implementation through a long transition period.

The new uniform will be available for purchase from late November 2023, and introduced from Term 1 2024.  During a two-year transition period, students will have the option of wearing the new or old uniform. You can read more about the uniform redevelopment in the Community Engagement section of Note Day.

Community Update

New Uniform

The redevelopment of Redlands Academic Uniform commenced in 2022 with the formation of our Uniform Committee, comprising students, parents, staff, and Board representatives from across our whole School community.  This breadth of expertise and experience, along with extensive and ongoing collaboration, has helped shape a uniform that will meet the needs of future generations of Redlands students.

We are currently working through the practicalities of the transition to the new uniform, incorporating ongoing feedback. We are excited to share the new uniform design with you later this term.

This project has seen the first holistic review of our uniform in over 40 years and will culminate in a new era of school attire that is comfortable, contemporary and provides students with personal choice. Engaging a uniform designer who understood the needs of students from Redlands House through to the Secondary School, and who could realise and develop designs in a stylish, ethical, and sustainable way, was paramount. Leading Australian designer, Jonathan Ward, has led our objectives to produce a uniform that:

  • reflects the contemporary culture and essence of the School
  • positions Redlands as a modern top tier independent school
  • is worn with pride by students

The most defining aspect of the new uniform is individual student choice. There will no longer be a summer and winter uniform. The new uniform will be trans-seasonal and will be designed to be worn all-year round. It will feature a range of core items as well as an extensive range of optional garments to complement each students’ individual preferences, style, and comfort. The new uniform will incorporate gender neutral options and honour the legacy of Redlands uniforms across our rich history.

Value and cost have been a central focus of the Uniform Committee. These have been addressed through the development of a trans-seasonal uniform, the use of newly developed fabrics that are lightweight, durable, and comfortable and implementation through a long transition period. The new uniform will be transitioned into the School over two years. It begins at the start of Term 1, 2024 and concludes at the end of Term 4, 2025. In the lead-up to the full transition, students may wear either the current uniform or the new uniform. Our much loved Second Hand Uniform Sales will continue to provide our families with current uniform items as we transition to the new uniform.

The current uniform will be transitioned out by the end of Term 4, 2025. We are working with our uniform manufacturer and the School’s Sustainability Committee to provide sustainable and ethical recycling solutions for the current uniform once it ceases to be available for use at the end of 2025.

It was a pleasure to host the Prep School Parent Contact Group (PCG) Meeting in the Liggins Building on our Senior Campus this week. We are so grateful for our active and passionate PCGs who continue to explore and deliver ways to keep our community connected, included, and supported. If you are looking to connect with our community for support then please reach out to the passionate and diverse experience of our class and year group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support Redlands families.

At Redlands we aim to provide extensive opportunities to enable our community’s light to shine and to foster the light in those around us and those in need. The Redlands Parent Prayer Group will gather on Monday 21 August from 7 to 8pm in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Cremorne, to provide the opportunity for those interested to come together in prayer for our school community.

We look forward to welcoming our community to the much anticipated Gala Ball this Saturday evening. To read more about our Gala Ball, and the fabulous experiences, products and activities on offer please check out the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Alumni Update

Enormous thanks to Redlander Dr Katie Zyner, Senior Research Officer at the Children’s Medical Research Institute who joined Dumolo House in support of Jeans for Genes Day, both behind the BBQ and as a guest presenter. Katie enjoyed her time at Redlands and is grateful for the teachers who supported her. She also talked about genetic research and the focus of the Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Katie explored different pathways to get to where she wanted to go, and after graduating Redlands in 2005 completed a Bachelor of Medical Sciences at the University of Sydney before finishing an Honours year with the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CRMI). After obtaining a PhD in Medicine, she followed her passion she became a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

Katie is now a Senior Scientist a CRMI in the Computational Systems Biology Group and is a Conjoint Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine & Health at Sydney University.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Our walk next week on Wed 16 Aug is around Beauty Point. Meet at the Orso carpark at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie on 0406 691 533.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our next book for this term is Babel by R.F. Kuang. The date for the meeting is to be confirmed. New book suggestions for next term are welcome!

Parents Tennis

We held the Junior School Parents Tennis Day on Wednesday 9 August. It was a glorious day to be on court with the sun shining.  The day was attended by around 30 Junior School parents. We had a fierce Round Robin Competition with 14 competitors battling it out for the title. Danielle Bird (Years 4 and 6) outplayed everyone by winning the most games. Danielle took home the winners trophy, a new Babolat Tennis racquet and a set of balls.

The clinic attendees had a great time brushing up on some old skills and learning some new ones. Jill McCann (Kindy and Year 3) won the Clinic Lucky Door prize of a private tennis lesson.

We are looking forward to hosting the last of the Redlands Parents Tennis Days with the Secondary School Parents Tennis Day on Wednesday 16 August. There are still some places available so be sure to book your spot today.

For more information, please call Felicity on 0416 082 882 or Shirley on 0452 209 625.

Yr 11 Student Led Assemblies

As Yr 12 have been navigating their Trial Examinations, Yr 11 have eagerly stepped-up to plan, lead and facilitate the Week 3 and 4 Student Led Assemblies. In addition to the usual student announcements and updates, Yr 11 focused on key issues valued by the Redlands community.

Thanks to Indy Hindmarsh, Hugo Little, Antionia Morgan, Apoorv Pilani, Sophia Rolon, Alex Tanner and James Stuart for embracing their denim and promoting Jeans for Genes Day in Week 3; and to, Katie Baker, Isla Dawson-Damer, Annabelle Harman, Will Howard, Alfie Leach, Angela Monty, Chloe Moore and Eva Osborn for celebrating what they love about Redlands in a heartfelt video.

Young People and The Law

The NSW Police Force has a strong commitment to building trust with young people and empowering them with knowledge and skills to keep them safe in the community. This week, Senior Constable Lynda Hart was invited to educate Yr 8 on the pressing and topical issues of cyber safety and safe social media use; and, Yr 9 on drugs, alcohol and looking after your mates.

In her role as Police Liaison Officer, Lynda brought a unique insight and view of the subject matter. With a thirty-year career in the NSW Police Force Lynda grounded her messages with real life examples.

With Yr 8, Lynda spoke about online challenges, what the law says, getting help and staying safe. Key topics included:

  • Privacy and the protection of identities (essential for personal safety – not everyone is who they say they are)
  • Inappropriate images (nudes) of a person under the age of 18 is considered child abuse material and illegal
  • Sextortion
  • The laws of online interaction

The Yr 9 content explored:

  • trends in vaping, alcohol and drug use
  • being an upstander and supporting mates
  • the relationship between choices and consequences
  • the legalities of being in possession of drugs and alcohol when underage; and, the legalities of supplying alcohol (including parents) to those underage

The following resources can support your conversations at home:

Yr 8 Drama Performance Evening

Yr 8 Drama Performance Evening, Australian Landscapes took place on Monday and Tuesday evenings this week. Yr 8 students delighted their audience of parents and teachers with endearing renditions from their favourite Australian plays, including Hating Alison Ashley, Two Weeks with the Queen, Lockie Leonard, Slam Dunk and Burnt. All students showed tremendous talent and agility, stepping into characters, manipulating costumes and props and using stage and positioning with great success! It was a highly enjoyable event, and we look forward to seeing how far their skills progress when they hit the stage again in Yr 9! A special congratulations to Rupert Perry and Aurora Crennan who stepped in and performed in scenes at short notice.

Yr 8 and 9 Analytical Writing Bootcamp

Over the past three weeks, the Analytical Writing Bootcamp, run by the Dean of Studies (7-10) has been well-attended by students in Years 8 and 9. Students are quickly gaining confidence in their writing skills as they consolidate and practise the important skills of annotating, understanding texts on both literal and conceptual levels, ascertaining the purposes and functions of different texts and forming well-crafted and controlled paragraphs. The first session will conclude this Monday. A reminder to students who have signed up to the second session, that this commences on Monday 21 August at 3:30pm in LH2.9. Session 2 is now full. A special thank you to our Yr 11 coaches who have attended one or more sessions to assist Years 8 and 9 students: Anneke Steele, Heidi Colleran, Antonia Morgan, Conor Petersen, Sophia Rolon, Scarlet Thorp, Jocelyn Wang, Daisy Thomas, Anderson Boris, Ruby Voyce, Isla Wickham, Indi Hindmarsh, Hamish Campbell, Grace Durrant, Freddie Yates and Mikaela Sanger-Larsson.

Jeans for Genes Day

The Dumolo House charity event, held on Jeans for Genes Day, once again showcased our community’s generosity. The event featured a sausage sizzle, a blue-themed bake sale, and the sale of blue ribbons, all directed towards supporting the Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Our accomplishment in raising a substantial sum for Jeans for Genes Day, benefiting the Children’s Medical Research Institute, is further amplified by our connection to Katie Zyner. As a 2005 graduate and now Senior Research Officer in the Computational Systems Biology Team at CMRI, Katie shared her valuable insights with Dumolo House students about her work and the importance of fundraising for CMRI yesterday – despite pledging her allegiance to Cowper!

Katie’s team combines computational analysis and lab work to understand stem cell development, uncovering how cells diversify despite sharing the same DNA blueprint. Katie’s insightful presentation celebrated our fundraising and shed light on how our funds will be used. Her ability to simplify complex ideas left students impressed, inspiring them as National Science Week approaches.

We’re eager to maintain our reputation as top contributors for the next Jeans for Genes Day. Congratulations to Dumolo House, and heartfelt thanks to Katie for her contributions.

Overall, the total raised this year was $6591 for the entire Redlands community K-12. Redlands came 1st in School fundraising, which is the 3rd year in a row!

Year 12

HSC and IB Trial Exams

Kudos to the entire Yr 12 cohort for exemplifying remarkable self-discipline and unwavering resilience throughout this challenging trial exam phase. Despite the heightened stress that often accompanies such periods, the collective determination of Yr 12 has shone brightly as each student conscientiously participated in and tackled their exams to the best of their abilities.

As we approach the conclusion of this trial assessment period, it’s a friendly yet essential reminder to our Yr 12 students to conscientiously prioritise their self-care for the remaining six weeks of this academic year. With just one more day remaining, the finish line is in sight, and nurturing your wellbeing will undoubtedly bolster your journey.

Industry Day Information

On Thursday 21 September, the Yr 11 cohort will be participating in Industry Day. This is an opportunity for students to dress in appropriate work attire, make their way to an industry for the day and learn through these professionals. Students will be able to:

  • Familiarise themselves with a workplace,
  • Gain an understanding of the range of professional roles that exist within an organisation and how these are projected to change in the future,
  • Learn about the ‘soft skills’ employers regard as important when recruiting, and
  • Engage in networking with members of the organisation.

Students will receive further information regarding this event on Friday during the Yr 11 Year Meeting. Parents and carers will be receiving information via Pulse. Thank you in advance for your support.

Yr 11 Leading Yr 10-12 Assembly

Over the last two weeks, Yr 11 students have volunteered not only to meet and greet at the front and back entrances to both campuses while Yr 12 are completing their yearly examinations, they also stepped up to lead the Yr 10-12 and the Yr 7-9 Assemblies during Tutor. Two groups of students planned, coordinated and ran these assemblies in creative, informative and interactive ways. Well done to students who volunteered their time to embrace this experience and continue growing as leaders.

Fall Forward Award goes to … Alex Tanner!

At the Yr 10-12 Assembly this week, our Yr 11 students presented the Fall Forward Award to Alex Tanner. Alex has managed her incredible dedication to Sport in school playing on the Redlands Firsts Basketball Team and outside of school playing with the Norths Premier U18s Team. This team won the Melbourne Classic, a nationwide tournament, and they finished 2nd in the State Championships. Additionally, Alex is coaching younger students at Norths while still managing her time on campus, in her classes and being a positive and supportive friend to her peers within the cohort. Congratulations, Alex!

HICES Music Festival

Students from Years 7-12 will be attending the HICES Music Festival from Sunday 13 – Wednesday 16 August. This Heads of Independent Co-Educational Schools (HICES) Music Festival draws schools from across Sydney for a 3-day camp, culminating in a concert at Sydney Town Hall on the final evening. Schools, students, and teachers compare practice, foster excellence, and nurture a love of music-making in the shared context. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and this year we have two Yr 11 students attending, Hallie Hunt and Sholto Mirrlees-Black.

Yr 11 Alumni Presentations

This morning, Yr 11 were extremely lucky to have two Redlands alumni volunteer their time to talk to a group of students interested in studying abroad and in particular, in the fields of legal studies and film and fashion. Abby Goodin is completing her degree in Performing Arts and Film at Parsons University in New York and Lindsay McNeil has just completed an undergraduate law degree at Cambridge University.  Abby and Lindsay shared their application experience, the reality of what is important in the application process, what to consider when wanting to study overseas and also what college is like abroad.

We are extremely honoured to have had them visit and we are very thankful to Mrs Kim Flatman, Alumni & Community Engagement Coordinator, for organising this experience for our Yr 11 cohort.

Helping Learner Drivers Become Safe Drivers

Lane Cove Council and Hunter’s Hill Council will be hosting an online workshop for parents/carers and supervisors of Learner Drivers. This free workshop supports parents and supervisors of learner drivers to be confident and effective teachers. Winter School Update

Reflection sent from Tom Dewar, Angus McInnes, Charlotte Humphreys, Jemima Hugman…

Recently some lucky students from Yr 10 have had the fantastic opportunity to stay at Jindabyne and take part in the Winter School program. Staying at the Redlands High Country Campus for 9 weeks, the students must balance skiing/snowboarding and schoolwork.

Our weeks look a little different to our ‘usual’ Sydney week. Monday and Tuesday are the students’ “weekends,” meaning we get to ski/board for two full days. In the mornings we have lessons in small groups and free skiing, and then spend some free time in the Thredbo Village and Jindabyne. These days are always lots of fun and a great opportunity to not only improve your skills, but to make new friends. Wednesday to Friday include a mix of skiing/boarding in the morning and school in the afternoon, followed by a very exciting Saturday and Sunday which is a 9 – 5 school day.

The HCC (High Country Campus), where everyone (including teachers) stay, is a beautiful campus that includes stunning views and incredible wildlife such as kangaroos, echidnas, and wombats. Among the students, the Rec Room is a favoured choice to hang out during free time, with ping pong, air hockey and pool tables, as well as many couches for movie nights. It is a great place where students can relax and have fun with their friends.

A notable event of late was the karaoke evening that took place this previous Sunday. In our new tutor groups, we each choose a song and perform for everyone, with a panel of judges/teachers scoring. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard California Girls, Call Me Maybe, Party in the USA and Shut Up and Dance sung by the very talented Yr 10.

Some very lucky people have recently celebrated their ‘Sweet 16’ on campus. Being away from home can be very hard, but the whole year singing Happy Birthday and a huge cake at dinner makes for an unforgettable experience.

The most challenging part of Winter School so far has been adjusting to this new busy (and quite tiring) schedule. 6:30am daily wake ups (luxurious 7:30am sleep ins on the weekend) and jam-packed days + late nights, have led to a few tired students; however, we are all learning a lesson in being patient with each other and navigating the ups and downs of living quite literally on top of each other.

Overall, there is not a single person who isn’t loving Winter School. We’ve already created numerous wonderful memories that will endure for a lifetime. We look forward to seeing our family, pets and cohort soon as we near the Exeat weekend.

Rough Edges

As part of our service focus this term, Yr 10 will be actively engaged in raising awareness and funds for homelessness. Our primary focus will be on supporting Rough Edges, a remarkable organisation located in Darlinghurst. At the heart of Rough Edges’ philosophy is the unwavering belief that every individual holds inherent value and deserves care and compassion, with the aim to help vulnerable and marginalised individuals, especially those facing homelessness, addiction, or mental health challenges.

Their core values are deeply ingrained in their mission:

  • Personal Growth: Rough Edges firmly believes that individuals are the true experts of their own lives, capable of devising solutions to their challenges and fostering their personal growth.
  • Connection: The organisation places immense importance on the healing power of belonging and inclusion. They prioritise creating a community at Rough Edges where every individual can find solace, healing and support.
  • Safety: Central to Rough Edges’ ethos is the provision of a safe and welcoming environment. They are dedicated to ensuring that anyone who enters their doors feels secure, respected and embraced.
  • Hospitality: Demonstrating their commitment to valuing and respecting every person, Rough Edges offers a high level of care to all. Their hospitality extends beyond mere service, fostering a sense of worth and dignity in those they serve.

In addition, throughout Tutor Time, students will explore the causes and consequences of homelessness, reflecting on the varied experiences of individuals affected by this social issue. One of these opportunities involves hosting a guest speaker, Paul Bramble from Rough Edges, to discuss events in his past and the ways in which he successfully transformed his life after experiencing homelessness.

Furthermore, there will be a full day excursion to the Cook4Good program in Paddington. During this activity, students will prepare nutritious meals for homeless people in the local community. Following this, students will take a learning walk through the city, reflecting on the diverse experiences of those dealing with homelessness and exploring different responses to this issue.

Hot chocolate Fundraiser by Yr 10 for Rough Edges

From Millie Winton and Imogen Jeffery-Bilich:
On Wednesday Yr 10 raised money for Rough Edges with a hot chocolate stall. It was so amazing seeing everyone come together to support such a wonderful cause. So many amazing Yr 10s volunteered their recess and before school time to help set up, sell, count money and perform for this event. Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible if not for the support from Ms Walker and Ms Vale, helping everyone make this initiative come to life…and of course the support of everyone’s cold morning hot chocolate needs. I can’t wait to be a part of more service initiatives to come with all the awesome people in my year!

From Hannah Scott:
It was so lovely to interact with all of the different Year Groups and see what a supportive community Redlands is. It was such a great opportunity to be involved with an organisation that exemplifies such compassion and commitment. In the upcoming weeks we will be involved in an Urban Walk and Cook4Good. We look forward to these next few weeks and are eager to make the biggest difference that we can.

Jeans for Genes Day

As part of the Jeans for Genes day fundraising events last Friday, our wonderful 8 McDouall Blue, with the Tutor, Naoko Abe assisted with the Bake Sale that took place on the Junior Campus.

Subject Focus – Technology

Last week the Year 8 CO2 Dragster Competition was held as part of students’ current technology project. The winners were Katherine Arena and Zaira McHutchison and Patrick Sun won the People’s Choice Award for favourite design.

Year 8 Drama Performances

This week the Year 8 Drama Performances took place. Throughout the course of the  term, students have explored the work of Australian writers and performers who have contributed to Australian drama and theatre. This was the first time many of the cohort had taken part in a full scale performance exam and the performances were absolutely fantastic! I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Tuesday night performances and was thoroughly impressed by the support that students provided to one another (a number of students acted as stand-ins)  and the clear time and effort that had gone into rehearsing.

Police Liaison Officer Talk

As part of the Pastoral program this year we have had a focus on equipping students with the skills to be able to protect themselves when engaging in online activities. This week we were very fortunate  to have Senior Constable Lynda Hart come and deliver a presentation on choices with regards to content sharing online. The content covered included many topics, with resources available on the THINKUKNOW website. A tool that really stood out to help students make better decisions before hitting ‘send’ or ‘like’ was the AWARE acronym (below) designed to reduce impulsive decision making in an online space.

Year 7

Yr 7 – Don’t we Look Darlin’ in our Denim?!

On Friday, students from across the School decked themselves out in their fanciest jeans and bluest clothes, whilst tightly gripping a gold coin, ready to donate to Jeans for Genes day. Some super individuals even managed to pull off an exceptional double or even triple denim combo! The day was a great success with valuable money raised for the Children’s Medical Research Institute who explore how to find treatments and cures for birth defects or genetic diseases, like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and life-threatening metabolic disorders in children. With 12 kids born every minute worldwide facing these issues, it was a great cause to support.

Students offered a gold coin donation to wear their jeans (or, in one case, tracksuit pants with a ‘jeans’ post-it note on them!) and were also able to contribute by purchasing blue ribbons and cakes sold in a bake sale. Pleasingly, a large number of our Yr 7 cohort went the extra mile to support the Junior School by helping to run their bake sale on the day. It was lovely to see them embracing the service values we affirm across the school.

Row, Row, Row your Boat into the Summer Sport Season

The Summer Sport season is almost upon us! Over the past couple of weeks students have had the opportunity to select a Summer Sport, which they will engage in for the final few weeks of this term and into next term. Now that Yr 7 have all completed both a Non-Representative and Representative Sport option, they had the choice this time to select whether they want to be in a Representative or Non-Representative team. Of course, the requirement still remains that students engage in at least one Representative Sport option across each year so, if they choose a Non-Representative option now, they will need to do a Representative option in the Winter Season. More information on School Sport can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Pulse.

Importantly, students have a new option that they could select as a sport for this Summer Season – Rowing! Yr 11 came out to the Undercroft last week to promote Rowing, setting up ergs between the lockers and challenging students to row in the fastest time they could. There was some healthy competition and positive support as students, many for the first time ever, got onto an erg and imagined themselves rowing across the waters. Thank you to our Yr 11s who ended the session showing us how it’s really done!

Mrs Rolon Discusses Subject Selections for Yr 8 2024 and AI

Today, our Dean of Studies (7-10), Mrs Anna-Marie Rolon, spoke to Yr 7 about their upcoming subject selection process for Yr 8 in 2024. She made it clear to students that they will be automatically enrolled to continue in Core Classes for most of their subjects next year, but that they will need to select ONE Arts subject and ONE Language subject (unless they are part of the Learning Plus class). Students were encouraged to think carefully about their choices, particularly their choice of Language, in light of how this might impact their choices in future Senior studies.

Parents/carers and students have each received a Courses of Study Booklet, recently sent by Mrs Rolon via email. Specific course requirements and details about individual subjects are within this pdf. You can also access the pdf in the Documents and Forms section on our Yr 7 page on Pulse.

Mrs Rolon also spoke to Yr 7 about the new Academic Integrity Policy for Yrs 7-12, including the recent additions concerning the use of AI software. It was made clear to students that any use of AI programs like Chat GPT without appropriate referencing constitutes a violation of our academic integrity guidelines and can result in a zero mark for students. Mrs Rolon also made it clear that students should be keeping records of their research and drafts of their work, so that they are able to show evidence of the originality of their work, should there be questions raised about its provenance. These are important lessons for students to take on board as they navigate increasingly complex assessment tasks.

Science Week 2023

Next week, Redlands will jump into the annual Science Week. Coinciding with National Science Week, Science Week at Redlands will provide an excellent opportunity for students to be involved in a range of fun and interesting activities that will expand their science knowledge and give them a chance to try out a range of engaging pursuits. There will also be some special Science lessons during their normal scheduled Science classes. Some of the extra activities require signing up for in advance, so I encourage students to register their interest quickly before places fill up!

History Excursion – Week 6 (August 22 and 23)

In Week 6, Yr 7 are going on a History excursion to examine ancient artefacts at the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney. It will be a wonderful and engaging experience for them, offering them the chance to see a wide range of interesting artefacts, and some surprising representations of the ancient world! If you have not already done so, please grant permission for your child to attend via Redlands Pulse.

Key information:

  • Core classes 7B, 7O, 7P and 7Y will attend on Tuesday 22 August
  • Core classes 7G, 7M and 7R will attend on Wednesday 23 August

Students will depart from the Senior Campus at 8.20am and return to school by 1pm. They will eat lunch at school and attend their regular timetabled classes in Periods 5 and 6.

Students are required to wear their full school uniform (including blazer), and are asked to pack their recess, water bottle and any personal medication (e.g. EpiPen, asthma puffer) in a small bag that is not their school bag.

Assessments Reminders

Today (Thursday), students sat their third Mathematics assessment of the year. Well done to them all on getting through it!

Importantly, this assessment was the first of many soon to be appearing on student calendars! While our cohort have all been working to plan ahead in Tutor time, it is worth reminding everyone of the assessments coming up, as it will soon be a busy time for our Yr 7s with further assessments coming up in Christian Studies in Week 5 and both English and HSIE in Week 6. At least one of two assessments per week then follow until the end of term! So, it is important for our students to plan ahead to ensure they manage this workload.

You can find all these details, including assessment notifications, through the Assessments page on the Yr 7 Core Page on iLearn.

Good Luck for the HICES Music Festival!

Next week, three of our Yr 7 cohort will be fortunate enough to attend the Heads of Independent Coeducational Schools (HICES) Music Festival. Held on the 13-16 August, this event draws schools from across Sydney for a three day camp, culminating in a concert at Sydney Town Hall on the final evening. It is a great opportunity for schools, students and teachers compare practice, foster excellence and nurture a love of music-making in a shared context.

This should be a wonderful event for our students, and we wish those attending – Clem Roumanoff, Elliot Taylor and Mackenzie Willis – all the best for a fantastic and enlightening time. Thank you also to our very own Yr 7 Tutor, Mr Owen, who will be attending the Festival as music staff, representing Redlands.

Head of Junior School

That was the Greatest Show!

We should strive to be better in all that we do each day, whether it’s in our work or who we are as people. We always hope this for our students and for those of us who experienced last Thursday’s Junior Music Festival: A Night with the Stars, this was a perfect example of lifting the bar to a level not seen before. I have now seen sixteen Junior Music Festivals in my years at Redlands and without doubt, this was the greatest show of all.

I was moved by the sheer quality and joy that radiated from the stage and as I said in my closing message, it was impossible not to feel the students’ sense of pride and enjoyment in being part of such a memorable performance and I loved that every single student is involved on stage in at least two musical items.

Both the Music department and I have received positive messages of gratitude from many families, for which we are grateful. These small tokens of appreciation mean a great deal and I know that the Music team have posted them up on the wall in their office.

We know that these types of events don’t just happen without an inordinate amount of hard work, planning and expert guidance and we are blessed to have an exceptional Music team, led most ably and humbly by Mrs Moses. Whilst I know that they don’t crave any aspect of the limelight, I am very deliberately shining the spotlight on them all and share my heartfelt appreciation. I also acknowledge the various roles that our whole staff of team play: Junior School teachers, support staff, facilities, AV and stage crews, all of which are crucial components in the overall success of the show.

We look forward to sharing the secure link to the professional recording with our families when it is available.

Jeans for Genes Day – $6,591 Raised!

As a School, supporting the Children’s Medical Research Institute’s major fundraising campaign, Jeans for Genes, has been important to us for many years.

As we reflected on the success of last Friday’s event, I was moved to receive an email from Dr Will Hughes from the Children’s Medical Research Institute, who also happens to be a Junior School parent. Dr Hughes shared that everything raised goes straight to CMRI and helps find cures for children’s genetic diseases and this year, we have seen this come to fruition for one of our own students.

I also shared Dr Hughes’ message in assembly this week that there are a number of outstanding research groups there doing world-leading research in kids’ cancers and developmental genetics and how the funds raised truly help fund experiments and purchase equipment. There is also this recognition of Redlands’ ongoing support as you walk in the main door of the Institute.

Thank you to our students, staff and parent community who assisted in many different ways to support this event and in particular to Class 4Y, Ms McKenzie, Ms Tobiansky and Ms Abe who drove our involvement. As a School to be able to contribute more than $6,000 is quite remarkable and we know that this will have an impact on the lives of others, the most important aspect of the day.

National Science Week 2023

We are looking forward to embracing the opportunity to shine the spotlight on Science next week in National Science Week. This year’s theme is Innovation: Powering Future Industries, and we have a range of exciting opportunities for our Junior School students to explore these topics of why Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are important in our every day and future lives. Some of these will include:

  • Dr Melanie Zeppel, a Redlander and also a current parent of the School, will share her passion for STEM and exploring how mechanical learning and AI supports Innovations in Agriculture with our Yr 6 students.
  • Dr Laura Driessen will be sharing her passion for STEM and her focused work in astronomy and innovations in space with Yrs 3, 4 and 5.
  • The Sydney Water Wonder of Waters Van will visit our campus and our Yr 3 students will be investigating ‘Innovations Around Us’ by understanding more about the management of water in Sydney and around the world.
  • On Thursday and Friday during lunchtime, Yr 6 students will be running a variety of fun STEM-themed activities for students to take part in flexing their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills.

Art Exhibition Student Works

We are delighted to have digital works completed by a number of our Yr 3 students on display in this local exhibition next week. Congratulations to Charlie Hsu, Samir Jackson, James Liao, Hamish Quigley and Claudia Steele and there will also be ephemeral work that was completed by groups.

Book Week Dress Up Day: Tuesday 22 August

We are looking forward to also acknowledging Book Week 2023 with this year’s theme, Read, Grow and Inspire. As shared previously, we are thrilled to welcome acclaimed authors, Louise Clark and Reece Clark to read to and inspire our students.

This year’s opportunity for students (and staff) to dress up in costume related to a book character of choice or connected to this year’s theme takes place on Tuesday 22 August. Start thinking about those costumes and, as always, we look forward to seeing the campus embrace this creative event!

A Flight Plan to Resilience: Guiding Your Little Pilot through Turbulence in Life

Our termly parent session on Student Wellbeing will explore and focus on how to encourage the development of resilience in our children. Delivered again by our own expert team of Junior Campus School Counsellors, the session will explore the factors involved in how parents and carers can foster resilience, enhance independence, and allow controlled adversity for growth in children.

There will be some practical tips on how to equip children to handle setbacks, promote problem-solving, use assertive communication, and practise self-care. Our team will also cover skills on how to nurture emotional growth in children, sharing practical tools and strategies with you.

Shining Star Concert at Mosman Art Gallery

Last Sunday, over 20 Redlands students performed at the Shining Star Concert at Mosman Art Gallery. The concert is organised by community parents and attracts young musicians of various ages and skill levels from local schools. The event was a big success and I extend my thanks to our students for representing Redlands in this highly enjoyable afternoon and to our parents for supporting the event too.

Book Week (21–25 August)

Tuesday 22 Dress Up day

Read Grow, Inspire is the 2023 them for Book Week. Each year since 1945 the CBCA has brought children and books together across Australia through Children’s Book Week. During this time schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers, teacher librarians and public librarians create colourful displays, develop activities, run competitions, and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. This year our Lucy Hill Librarian, Mrs Stokes along with Mrs Bertinshaw will be holding all sorts of fun challenges and games in class time and at lunchtime to celebrate reading.

Our students this year are welcome to come dressed up in their favourite book character or a costume that reflects the 2023 theme on Tuesday 22 August. This will be a P-6 day of celebration. There will be no parades nor is there any expectation, it is merely a fun day for the children. Simple is best! Can I quietly encourage that Marvel characters or Disney outfits are not worn as we would love to celebrate the beauty of literature.

Jeans for Genes

Thank you to all the Prep families who baked such delicious cupcakes last Friday for Jeans for Genes Day. We had cupcakes in all colours and flavours and Prep students absolutely loved them.

Across the whole school, an amount of $6050 was raised on the day with more online donations to come. What a fabulous result and we know that this money will assist in vital research for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Jeans for Genes Day is so important not only to raise much needed funds, but to increases awareness of the challenges that children and their families with genetic disorders face every day.

Thank you to Fiona McKenzie and Karin Alfonso for coordinating the Preparatory School event.

Prep School Musicians Shine at Performance

Last Sunday, a group of Redlands students performed at the Shining Star Concert at the Mosman Art Gallery. The Shining Star Concert is organised by local community parents, with the aim to provide a performance platform for music loving children, attracting young musicians from local schools of various ages and skill levels.

We are very proud of the 20 Redlands students who performed with many of them from the Prep School. The concert not only showcased the amazing talents of our young musicians, it also was an opportunity for lots of laughter and performance resilience building.

Jam on Toast Incursion

TG, Kindergarten and Year 1 students were lucky enough to attend a concert this morning by one of their favourite composers, Jamie, from Jam on Toast. Students have been learning Jamie’s songs in their curriculum music lessons, and enjoyed meeting the composer and singing and dancing along. The students’ favourite songs were Papa’s Making Pizza, Fingerplay, Good Morning and Fabuloso. Jamie’s songs are full of wonderful learning opportunities, and above all are a lot of fun!

Term 3 Big Hearts Project

Insights from our Counsellors

Emotional literacy holds significant importance in aiding children to navigate and manage their emotions effectively. By honing this skill, children can gain better insight into their own feelings as well as those of others. In our introductory workshop, called the Big Hearts Project, we worked with a small group of Year 2 students and delved into valuable resources that can assist parents in fostering their child’s emotional growth.

Exploring the Spectrum of Emotions

To initiate discussions about emotions, we incorporated a clip from the movie ‘Inside Out’. Engaging with various forms of media, such as films or TV shows, provides an excellent opportunity to explore feelings with your child. Encourage them to identify and analyse the emotions experienced by the characters, as it can serve as a starting point for exploring your child’s own emotions. This interactive approach fosters open dialogue and aids children in developing a better understanding of their feelings.

Breath Work for Self-Regulation

Another crucial aspect we covered was the significance of breath work in self-regulation. We practised the box breathing exercise, a technique used by the NAVY Seals (fun fact!), to promote a sense of calm for both you and your child. You can find a demonstration of this breathing technique here. We recommend engaging in this exercise together with your child before bedtime, as it can create a peaceful environment that supports relaxation and emotional well-being.

Science Club Comes to Wellbeing Lunchtime Activities

View Flyer Here

We are pleased to welcome the Brainy Brunch Science Club to our Term 4 wellbeing lunchtime activities.  The Brainy Bunch is an outside provider who has kindly agreed to come in a few lunchtimes to provide our students another lunch time opportunity. Due to limited resources and staffing, this club will be capped at 25 students. We know this club will be a popular option for our students, so we will talk to them about patience if they miss out next term and we will also explain to them that this club is different to the others in that they must show commitment to attending as it is a user pay club.

If you are interested in registering your child for Term 4, please fill in the registration form below.

Medication

To ensure our students are safe and that we all follow Redlands procedures, can I please remind   families to have a discussion and hand over any medication with the School Nurse only. The nurse will ask you to fill in a medical authority form which is kept in the Health Centre. Any student who needs to take medication will do so in the Junior Campus Health Centre (found in the Parkes building). Thank you for your understanding.

The School Nurse can be reached directly on 99086433.

Canteen Communication

Our students are so lucky to have such a choice of food for recess and lunch, but, on occasions little stomachs can’t quite hold the amount of food being ordered for them and as a result whole lunches are being discarded in bins which, as I am sure everyone can appreciate, is wasteful.

We do worry when some students are not eating a nutritionally balanced lunch, so we encourage conversations at home around some items only being seen as a ‘treat’ on occasions.

The FLEXI school system is a system that works, but like any online ordering procedure, it can have glitches or can be offline for a time. Can I please ask our families that if you have any issues with the online system or if you need to communicate with the canteen, please email Jacqui Tyrell directly on jtyrell@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Jacqui checks her emails frequently during the day.

In the situation where a lunch has been forgotten or an order not placed in time, an ‘emergency lunch’ will be supplied to your child. It does need to be noted that a ‘replacement lunch’ is not given if a student does not like the lunch that has been ordered.

Thank you all for your understanding.

After School Prep Sport Reminder

Our Term 3 Sport options are going well, and students are enjoying all the opportunities on offer. Can I remind families that now that we are approaching Week 5, if your child pulls out of their Sport, fees will still apply. Movement between sport for students cannot be accommodated either at this late stage. Thank you for your understanding.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Redlands House Philosophy – Update

Redlands House has recently updated its philosophy, and we would very much appreciate any feedback from parents and families. Please email Mrs Huon with any comments – chuon@redlands.nsw.edu.au

New Philosophy

We believe that relationships and participation with other children, adults and the environment are central to learning.

We value diversity within Australian society and believe intercultural awareness based on respect and open mindedness is key to being an active global citizen. We respect and build upon multiple cultural ways of knowing, doing and being. Cultural responsiveness is more than awareness of difference, it is evident in everyday practice when educators demonstrate an ongoing commitment to developing their own cultural knowledge, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ ethnic, cultural, linguistic, family and individual diversity. We aim to achieve this in a three-way process with children, families and communities.

Redlands House acknowledges the important role families play in a child’s life and believe children learn best when families are involved in the education program. We recognise that in order for this to occur, good communication and collaboration must exist between families and educators as these form the foundations for the development of positive relationships and a strong home-school partnership.

At Redlands House we provide a rich, stimulating and nurturing environment. We use our environments as places to support each child’s observation, exploratory, investigative and imaginative skill development. We believe that environmental awareness and sustainability should be part of everyday life and are interwoven into all aspects of the program.

We believe that educators play a vital role in developing a supportive educational environment that reflects the child’s right to play and is based on intentionality in play. Staff engage in reflective practice, professional development and actively contribute to the wider early childhood community. We believe it is important to hold a holistic approach to Early Childhood pedagogy and we are guided by current world wide Early Childhood practice.

Redlands House acknowledges that education begins at birth and continues throughout life.

At Redlands House we believe children, families, community members and staff are united in being a community of learners who are compassionate, innovative and resilient.

Our play-based child-centred program acknowledges the importance of developing a child’s academic, social, emotional, creative and spiritual development. It respects the children’s existing funds of knowledge and upholds a strengths-based approach to growth and development. This results in a robust and dynamic pedagogy that supports children’s confidence and creativity to be successful lifelong learners.

Secondary Sport

As we lead into this weekend’s ISA Semi-Finals it has been great to see a resurgence in the number of students completing Representative Sports, we have a large number of teams this week participating in the Semi-Finals across Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Tennis. I thought this week it would be nice to dive into the old adage of winning vs team play the value of both. Both play vital roles in the development of teenagers in sports, each offering distinct benefits. Winning instills a sense of accomplishment, boosting teenagers’ self-esteem and motivation. It teaches them the value of setting goals, working hard and repairing the rewards of their efforts. It can inspire a competitive spirit that drives them to improve their skills and achieve even greater heights. On the other hand, teamwork is equally crucial. Participation alone in team sports teaches all about collaboration, communication and the importance of interdependence. They learn how to support and rely on their teammates, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie. This experience can translate to valuable life skills, helping students excel in academic and professional settings where teamwork is often required.

Balancing the two concepts is essential. While winning can motivate teenagers, placing too much emphasis on it may lead to undue stress, anxiety and an unhealthy obsession with victory. prioritising teamwork helps students develop social skills, empathy and resilience in the face of challenges, even when they don’t emerge as winners. Encouraging students to participate in sport with a holistic approach that values both winning and teamwork ensures that the students derive a well-rounded and enriching experience from their involvement.

‘Values hold the team together, provide stability for the team to grow upon, measure the team’s performance, give direction and guidance and attract like-minded people.’

Rugby

Saturday’s fixture saw the closure of round games for the 2023 ISA season.

A season that forced growth and built resilience across all players and coaching staff involved. It was this love for our sport that proposed the first combined teams allowing for strong competition week to week. Through injuries, defeats, and moments of doubt, you all emerged with even greater determination, embodying the true heart of a rugby player.

Congratulations to each player for their commitment, self-improvement, and resilience that have shaped this season into an unforgettable chapter in our rugby story at Redlands.

Thank you for allowing your child to be part of our Saturday Sport program as it is always great to see so many students loving their sport on a Saturday morning, despite the early starts and cold weather. Girls AFL continue their season for the next few weeks.

  • Representative Touch Football  (Term 1 teams plus new joiners) for students in Years 5&6

Welcome back to our returning students who played in these sports in Term 1 as we recommence our season from Round 6 through to 12 and also a special welcome and thank you to those students who signed up to play a Representative Sport in Term 4. You will be allocated to a team (Basketball and Rouch) or ranked in Tennis this term in preparation for next term.

Optional Student Attendance- Pre-Season Training

Those students who are playing a representative sport in Term 4 are encouraged to attend these optional skill sessions which will be offered on a Wednesday afternoon on site on the Junior School grounds taking place after school from 3:30pm-4:30pm.

This will allow those students who are in a Term 3 Rep or Non Rep sport to continue with their normal Term 3 sport with the option to join in when they get back to school. Sport uniform is fine for these sessions, no need for students to change.

After they return from their normal Wednesday sport, those students will have time to go to their classroom collect their bags and make their way to the venue if they wish to participate.

No registration is required for these sessions and parents/carers are asked to collect their child at 4:30pm sharp from either Dunnet Hall Allister St or from the Piazza inside the Junior School grounds.

Summer Pre Season sessions on a Wednesday will take place on Wednesday 13 September and Wednesday 20 September on site from 3:30pm-4:30pm.

Compulsory Student Attendance- Pre-Season Grading

Those students who are playing a representative sport in Term 4 will need to attend the final training and grading session on Saturday 16 September for Basketball, Touch Football, Tennis and Girls only Basketball. This is the only opportunity to finalise teams in preparation for IPSHA for Round 1 which takes place Term 4, Week 1.

If students fail to attend this grading session on Saturday 16 September, they will be placed in the lowest team to be assessed at a later stage once the season commences in Term 4.

Timings and venues can be viewed here Compulsory Representative Training Saturday 16 September

Students may wear their sports uniform to this session as Basketball Jerseys will be loaned out to them for the upcoming season once teams are selected.

Interested in Tee Ball

Manly Warringah Softball Association’s (MWSA) Teeball competition is for girls and boys aged 5+. Games are played at 8.30am Saturday mornings during Terms 4 and 1, with a break for the summer holidays. All games are played at one location – Abbott Road Diamonds, North Curl Curl.

MWSA is holding two free Come & Try Teeball Days next month: Friday 8 September, 4.30 – 6pm and Sunday 10 September, 2.00 – 4.00pm.

Please contact Janine Rolfe (Yr 6 & 7 Redlands parent) for further information: Janine@MWSA.com.au or 0410 601 077.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Sport Calendar

The sport calendar for Term 3 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2023 JS Sport Calendar

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Drama and Theatre

Yr 8 Drama, Australian Landscapes – Congratulations!

This week, Year 8 Drama students completed their first ever performance night. Over the past semester, students have explored the work of Australian writers and performers who have contributed to Australian drama and theatre. Students have engaged in a range of dramatic forms, performance styles and theatre conventions related to Australian theatre and developed a broad understanding of our cultural heritage and the characteristics of the Australian psyche. Everyone did a fabulous job, and we are very proud of the newly learnt performance skills they have developed and demonstrated. Thank you to the Year 8 Drama teachers: Kathryn Smith, Sarah Sparke, Esther Lamb and Samantha Novis for your fantastic contributions to the evening. We would like to acknowledge the First Peoples of Australia as the first artists, the first storytellers, the first communities and the first creators of culture. Your stories and experiences are the heart of this country. Well done Year 8 Drama!

Drama and Theatre: Student of the Week – Yasmin Allen

An ideal acting student is willing to take risks and throw themselves into whatever role they’re given. It takes courage to try new things in the drama room and Yasmin Allen is courageous.

Yasmin attends Senior Acting on Monday afternoon. She is an energetic participant, collaborating with peers in devised or scripted works. She brings creativity, curiosity and confidence to the drama room and enters the Adams Centre every week a smile and a willingness to give anything a go.

Yasmin is equally able to portray dramatic characters as well as bring the house down with her hilarious antics. She is an ideal student who is very much looking forward to our screen acting component and like a true professional, is looking forward to our end of year performances in front of a live audience. (Paul Caesar, Drama Tutor)

Junior Music Festival 2023

The 2023 Junior Music Festival A Night With The Stars was certainly a night to remember! Our cohorts shined, cocurricular ensembles dazzled, and our Arts Captains Cameron Lloyd and Elysia Angus kept us captivated throughout the evening. A particular highlight was the finale, in which all 450 students graced the stage in a triumph of logistics! It truly was ‘The Greatest Show’ and the Music Department are incredibly proud of the achievements of all students.

A big thanks to all involved, in particular our Friends of Music team whose contributions ensured the success of the event.

A video is being produced of the event and we look forward to sharing this with families in due course.

Tickets are already selling fast! We are delighted to have our Friends of Music again hosting this annual event and we can’t wait to share the evening with our community. Parents will have received a communication piece from the Music office this week.
