Issue 22 2024 Term 3 Week 2 - 01 Aug 2024

From the Principal

Gala Arts is always one of my favourite events on the Redlands calendar. Since my first Gala Arts back in 2017, each year I am in awe of the amazing talent on display from our Secondary School students across the disciplines of vocal, instrumental, dance and theatre.

Having regularly attended Gala Arts, as well as the many other high calibre performing arts productions at Redlands over the past eight years, I am cognisant that I could start to take for granted the overall quality of the arts at Redlands. That’s why, after Friday’s production, I was pleased to be speaking to someone who has vast experience in the performing arts at schools and beyond who remarked to me, “You don’t see this at other schools”.

As I reflected further on why, year after year, I and countless others are blown away by the performances at Gala Arts and other productions, I boiled it down to something I have talked a lot about over the past few years: culture.

As I have previously shared, culture is precious and is developed over many years by the collective understanding of the standards, expectations and assumptions about the “way things are done around here”. I believe our incredibly strong Redlands culture is passed down by the students as younger students look up to the older students, see how they carry themselves and aim to emulate and build upon that standard.

This continuum was made clear to me on Friday night as I not only saw the way our younger performers were looking up to our older performers, but the way our older performers were looking up to the Gala Arts judges: Redlanders who are now excelling in their various fields of the performing arts post school. It was these alumni who our current Year 12 students were looking up to back when they were in Years 7 and 8.

One of these judges was Redlander, Stella Everett, who recently graduated from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York where she was a scholarship recipient and winner of the FENDI Vanguard Award, presented to one of the most promising talents graduating from Juilliard. While I know a number of our Year 12 students were in awe of her when she was performing at Redlands six years ago, she remarked to me that when she was in Years 7 and 8 she was looking up to those senior students who were gracing the stage back then.

After witnessing the performances at Gala Arts on Friday night, I am confident that this cultural cycle of support and excellence will continue long into the future.

“Away” by Michael Gow

I look forward to seeing more of Redlands’ talented performing artists in the Year 11 Co-Curricular performance of Away next week at the Zenith Theatre in Chatswood.  Set in 1960’s Australia, Away is a powerful coming of age story that follows three families on summer holidays through journeys of independence, love, loss and reconciliation. This clever, funny and moving play is not to be missed with tickets still available for the three student performances.

Congratulations

I am pleased to announce that Year 12 student, Jack Keogh, has received a 2025 Tuckwell Scholarship at The Australian National University (ANU).

The Tuckwell Scholarship at ANU is one of the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship programs in Australia.

This year, there were over 1000 applications for Tuckwell Scholarships. Jack was one of 50 students invited to interview in Canberra earlier this month, with Jack being offered one of 25 Tuckwell Scholarship for 2025. Jack will join Redlander, Theo Mirlees-Black (Class of 2021), who was awarded a Tuckwell Scholarship for 2022. Congratulations, Jack!

Giving Day

On Wednesday 21 August we are excited to launch our major philanthropic campaign, Giving Day. Our Giving Day campaign supports the High Country Campus expansion and establishes another important means-tested scholarship in honour of Redlander Coralie Amos OAM.

Giving Day promises to be a fantastic day of celebration that will have a transformational impact for our students. I will personally be a part of the Giving Day team and look forward to connecting with members of our community on the day where we have 24 hours to reach our giving target of $400,000. Thanks to the incredible support of our matching gift donors, every donation on this day will be tripled, increasing the impact of everyone’s contributions significantly. Community Update

It was a pleasure to join the Junior School Parent Contact Group (PCG) meeting earlier this week. We are so grateful for our active and passionate PCGs who continue to explore and deliver ways to keep our community connected, included and supported. The term has commenced with a vast array of class, year group and program events and activities for  parent and carers and these can all be found listed in the RPFA section of Note Day.

My thanks to our students, staff and alumni, along with the many parents and carers who support their children in preparation, for the wonderful performances and production of Gala Arts 2024.  In a whole of community event it was particularly inspiring to see the connection between our alumni, the School and our performers. Our alumni continue to inspire, support and motivate our students and staff in all aspects of their endeavours. Our Guest Judges this year provide a small but impressive snapshot of our alumni who are pursuing careers and further study across the performing arts. Their impressive portfolios of work can be found in the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

Planning is well underway for the Festival of Redlands, a celebration of Redlands’ 140th year proudly hosted by the Redlands Parents and Friends Association and the Redlanders Alumni Association, in collaboration with the School. This unique event will showcase our community’s rich history of achievements, programs and talent through a diverse array of interactive activities, displays and performances in an afternoon of fun, food and entertainment. We invite you to celebrate, participate and enjoy the festivities with us.  More information, along with a call out for volunteers, can be found here.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Welcoming Redlander Guest Judges at Gala Arts

It was wonderful to see the Redlander Gala Arts Judges 2024:

  • Stella Everett RL 2018 – main judge
  • Ella Banfield RL 2020 – dance
  • Rebecca Oridz RL 2019 – drama and musical theatre
  • Poppi Kent RL 2019 – vocal
  • Chris Blundell RL 2013 – instrument

To learn more about their impressive life journey since they left Redlands, please read below.

Stella Everett

Stella Everett attended Redlands on a Ballet and Dance Scholarship from 2013 to 2018, participating in every artistic endeavour on offer. It was at Redlands that she trained in music, dance and drama, with the goal of attending a prestigious performing arts college. Upon graduation from Redlands, Stella was offered a place to study at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), and participated in their Bachelor of Acting program. After time spent at WAAPA, Stella was then offered a place at The Juilliard School in New York City where she trained for four years before graduating in 2023. It was during her final year that Stella was awarded the Fendi Vanguard Award, a scholarship created by the Fendi fashion house in collaboration with Juilliard, to be given to a student who displays the potential to be a future innovator in their chosen discipline.

Stella can be seen in TV shows such as EVIL (2023), and East New York (2023). Stella is honoured to be returning to Redlands, an institution where her artistic pursuits were treated with the same level of respect and necessity as the maths and science pursuits of her peers. It is with love, care and fierce respect that Stella returns to Gala Arts.

Rebecca Ordiz (Burchett)

Rebecca Ordíz (Burchett) graduated from Redlands in 2019 and has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music Theatre) at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). Having joined Redlands at age three, she participated in a diverse range of activities offered including Theatresports, Shakespeare Performances and Drama and Vocal Competitions, where she won many awards including both the Vocal and Theatre categories at Gala Arts. She also partook in the school musicals, playing The Artful Dodger in Oliver!, Wendy Darling in Peter Pan, and Fran in Strictly Ballroom. When graduating school she also was awarded the Arch Mitchell Memorial Prize for Voice.

After graduating, her professional Musical Theatre credits include: Olive Ostrovsky in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Hayes Theatre/September Remedy Productions), Essie in both the Melbourne and Sydney seasons of Parade (Chapel Off Chapel), Mary in ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ (VCA), Miss Millennium in Urinetown (VCA), Chess (Regent Theatre) and most notably, Rosalia in West Side Story on Sydney Harbour (Opera Australia/HOSH).

Rebecca is incredibly grateful for the exceptional training that the Redlands Performing Arts departments have given her and wants to extend a warm thank you to every teacher who saw potential in her dreams and never once asked for her ‘back up plan’.

Chris Blundell

Chris Blundell has pursued the arts in his dual careers as a Design Engineer and saxophonist. After graduating from Redlands in 2013, he received the UNSW Music Scholarship, enabling him to pursue dual degrees in Music (Creative Practice, Saxophone) and Mechanical Engineering (Honours).

As a Design Engineer, Chris develops products from initial concepts to production-ready goods, balancing technical specifications with usability and aesthetics. His portfolio includes medical devices, children’s toys, sports equipment, luxury goods and homewares.

Chris is also an active musician, writing, recording and performing with various bands. He frequently performs with Sydney-based jazz-funk band Red Revel and has toured the East Coast with Cone of Confusion, a multinational experimental jazz band. Their final performance at MONA showcased their unique blend of global influences. Leading the horn section of the QC Collective, Chris has appeared in Vogue with their prestigious clients.

At UNSW, Chris founded the Seaside Sax Ensemble, exploring chamber music for saxophones. His final university performance featured the Ensemble in arrangements of Samuel Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’ and Eric Whitacre’s ‘Sleep,’ recorded at St James Cathedral and Io Myers Studio at UNSW.

Poppi Kent

Poppi Kent is a talented singer and songwriter, currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts at the Conservatorium of Newcastle. Majoring in Performance, Songwriting, and Production and supported by the Doris Smith Scholarship for Voice, Poppi has dedicated her studies to refining her artistic craft. With sixteen years of singing experience and formal training across diverse genres such as Classical, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Folk and Pop, she brings a rich and versatile vocal style to her performances.

In addition to her academic and solo pursuits, Poppi is the lead singer of the musical group Chain Daisy, where she continues to captivate audiences with her dynamic vocal presence and compelling songwriting. The group has been fortunate to receive the AHA Paul Woseen Memorial Music Grant, which will significantly aid the launch of Chain Daisy into the music scene. Poppi is honoured to be here this evening to share the Gala Arts stage with old friends and to cheer on the mighty Cowper.

Ella Banfield

Ella loved being part of the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy, performing in Gala Arts every year. Upon graduating in 2020, her IB Dance performance works were showcased at the IB Global Conference in Hong Kong, and she completed her RAD Advanced 2 Ballet training.

Since then, Ella pursued dance full-time at Ettingshausens Pro, graduating with a Certificate IV in Dance and performing at the Light the Way Dance Convention in 2021. Ella also enjoys sharing her love for dance and has taught ballet, jazz and contemporary for many years.

She is now studying a Bachelor of Medical Science and Business at UTS and maintains her passion for performing arts as an executive committee member and choreographer for the university dance team competing at UniSport Nationals. Head of Secondary School

Last Friday night’s Gala Arts was a wonderful event showcasing an array of talent across the Secondary School. A huge congratulations to all students involved, those who performed and those who supported behind the scenes. Year 9 student Sahara Nicholas, who was the overall winner on the evening, deserves a special mention for her beautiful and skilful performance. I am sure all of the students were nervous and excited in equal measure, but you really could only see their passion, excitement and joy on the evening. It was wonderful to sit in the audience and experience this joy with and for them. Ms Katharine Boase, Subject Coordinator Dance and Year 12 AYA, led a team of Redlands staff, parents and students to bring the 2024 Gala Arts to life. We thank her for humble leadership of this stellar event.

On Monday evening this week, our Innovative Design Showcase took place and was a real success. The Innovative Design teachers were really pleased with the students’ efforts and the large number of community members who attended in support. The students received some valuable feedback and additional ideas to support their ongoing development, so it was a great confidence boost for our budding creatives.

I have noticed a few tired faces this week, from both staff and students, and imagine that many are staying up late, or rising early, to watch the Olympics. I have focused on keeping up with the highlights and have very much enjoyed seeing how the Aussies have experienced success, especially in the pool. I was also overjoyed to hear that our very own talented swimmers, Year 9 student Amelie Swann, has just returned from the School Nationals Swimming Championships held on the Gold Coast as part of the inaugural School Sport Games.

Amelie was part of NSW Schools team and competed in the 50m butterfly event and reached the final to come 7th nationally and record a Personal Best time. She was also part of two NSW relay teams for 6×50 handicap open relay and the 15-16 year girls 4x50m freestyle relay and recorded Personal Bests in both events and 4th in age relay. Amelie is now getting ready for NSW Senior State in August and Short Course Nationals in Adelaide in September.

Three students across different age groups have had their writing shortlisted in the Whitlam Institute’s What Matters? Writing Competition (2024). Pictured from left to right, Sienna Harriss (Year 10), Sophie Yu (Year 11) and Audrey Kwok (Year 8) were among 120 students to be selected from over 5000 entries across Australia. We congratulate them for voicing their perspectives in such insightful ways.

Fundraising for Jeans for Genes Day

Tomorrow, the Secondary School will take part in Jeans for Genes Day. As a school community, we have been supporting the Children’s Medical Research Institute for many years in the pursuit of helping children with genetic disorders and for the past two years, Redlands has proudly been the top donating school. We are encouraging students and families to be generous again this year, firstly by doing some baking tonight to donate to the bake sale (students should drop their donations to Liggins Staffroom before school – nut free with a clear list of ingredients listed for safety reasons). Then tomorrow, we can’t wait to see everyone wearing their denim, donating at least a gold coin, buying blue ribbons and selling out the bake sale. There is also the option to donate here.

Yr 12 Legacy Gift

Thank you for your continued support of the Year 12 Legacy Gift Team. We are all enjoying the flashy merch from this year’s Legacy Team which can be purchased here.

This year, funds raised will be contributed to the sixth Redlands Means Tested Scholarship named after Coralie Amos OAM Redlander Class of 1964. For all her efforts and commitment to Service, Coralie was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for Community Service in 2021.

Please join Year 12 in their efforts. They appreciate your support as they come to the end of their Redlands journey by purchasing one, or more, of our special commemorative 2024 drink bottles, Redlands Rhino key chains and greeting cards, or contribute directly to the Scholarship Fund.

If you make a purchase, products will be either delivered to your child’s class/tutor or by post for an extra charge.

Finally, I encourage students and parents/carers of year 7 to attend our Moonbah Program Information Evening, hosted by me and Mr Corcoran, in Redlands Hall from 6.00pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

There is so much going on at School over the next few weeks and I look forward to catching up with parents and friends at the Dance Showcase tonight and the School Play ‘Away’ next week. I do hope you managed to secure tickets!

  • Designing different garden sections

No matter their level of gardening experience, everyone is welcome! Whether your child is new to gardening or has a seasoned green thumb, their participation will help make our school greener and more sustainable.

Booked Solid: Redlands’ New Student Book Club is a ‘Novel’ Idea!

We are excited to announce the launch of the Redlands Book Club! Our enthusiastic student readers will meet every Tuesday at lunchtime in the Roseby Library. Each month will culminate in a themed discussion on the last Tuesday. Our inaugural theme is fantasy—fantastic, isn’t it?

On the remaining Tuesdays, students will engage in various ‘novel’ activities, including relaxed reading sessions, planning future reading initiatives, and lively discussions about all things books. We aim to cultivate a vibrant reading culture at Redlands.

We look forward to your child joining us in this ‘lit-erary’ adventure!

Warm regards,

The Redlands Student Book Club Team
*P.S. Bad reading puns are optional but encouraged!

Classes have worked tirelessly with many of their projects spanning the two years of the IB or HSC course. While these have been emotional journeys for our young adults, there are many feelings of relief, pride and anxiousness that will continue throughout this term and we are all along for the ride as they navigate these important moments of recognition and celebration.

Year 11

Gala Arts

Gala Arts, the School’s Annual Creative and Performing Arts Festival, was a splendid showcase of the remarkable and diverse talents of Redlands students spanning Years 7 to 12. This event was established with the dual purpose of highlighting the creative talents of Redlands students while fostering friendly Inter-House competition and House spirit.

The festival encompassed enthralling performances in Dance, Instrumental, Theatre, and Vocal categories, capturing the essence of the students’ artistic capabilities. Additionally, the foyer proudly exhibited Visual Art and photography pieces that reflected this year’s theme, “Shadows.” Winners from each category were revealed during the event, adding an element of excitement and recognition to the occasion.

Gala Arts holds a deeper significance beyond being a mere showcase of talent. It encourages students to explore new avenues of their abilities, challenging them to push past their limitations and embrace personal growth. Stepping onto the stage or presenting their artworks in front of an audience can be daunting, but it instils confidence and resilience in the face of challenges. It teaches students the value of perseverance and the rewards that come from taking risks.

Participating in Gala Arts and embracing performance challenges goes beyond the applause and recognition. It is about empowering students to discover their full potential, build confidence, cultivate empathy, and become well-rounded individuals prepared to take on life’s diverse challenges.

During the upcoming trip, participants will visit M’Lop Tapang to see its impact and connect with the local community. Remie’s efforts show how personal interests can contribute to a good cause.

The Biting Truth – Nutrition to Fuel Your Brain and Body

As examinations approach and stress levels rise for Yr 11 students, proper nutrition becomes increasingly vital for maintaining physical, mental, and cognitive health. In light of this, we invited The Biting Truth, one of Australia’s leading nutrition consultancy companies, to speak with Year 11.

The Biting Truth boasted a team with over 20 years of combined experience, dedicated to helping individuals achieve their health goals and make confident food choices. Co-founder Anna Debenham, an Accredited Practising Dietitian, media nutritionist, guest speaker, and author, was committed to a whole foods approach to health. Anna and her co-founder met at Sydney University in 2014 while studying for their Masters of Nutrition and Dietetics, sharing a vision to revolutionise nutrition education in Australia.

Anna’s professional experience in addressing gut issues and her personal journey with food intolerances fuelled her passion for nutrition and wellbeing. The Biting Truth was a leading provider of high school nutrition programs, believing that the health and wellbeing of young individuals were essential for their overall growth and development. They emphasised fostering a positive relationship with food, the body, and physical activity.

The recent presentation by The Biting Truth enhanced students’ understanding of the importance of breakfast for cognitive performance, the effects of caffeine and its appropriate consumption, making healthy takeaway food choices, and debunking nutrition myths prevalent on social media.

Year 10

Year 10 Term 3: Resilience, Grit and Academic Focus

Today in our Year Meeting, I spoke to the cohort about their focus and efforts for the term, especially with half of the year group currently at Winter School. Students remaining on the Cremorne campus have experienced a significant shift in their core classes to facilitate individualised and exciting collaborative learning in preparation for the rigors of Stage 6.

I emphasised the importance of embracing these new core classes and paying close attention to their evolving educational landscape to build the necessary skills for success. My message included:

  • The Why: To build student autonomy, agency, and capacity to develop the necessary skills for success in Stage 6.
  • Challenge Yourself: Sit and work with students you haven’t worked with or connected with before. This is an opportunity to network and build skills outside your comfort zone.
  • Focus on Yourself: What skills do you need to thrive in the classroom? What are some things you can experiment with to strengthen your learning profile?
  • Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable: Experiment with different ways of learning. In Years 11 and 12, you will be in new courses and classes—this is an excellent time to prepare for the rigors of next year.
  • High Expectations, High Support: Redlands expectations remain high, but they are designed to support you in reaching your full potential.

I trust that you will continue to have supportive conversations with your young person at home to help them navigate the shift in dynamics on the Cremorne campus and focus on building their skills as curious learners.

Year 9 into 10 Subject Selection

Our Year 9 students have done an excellent job this week asking lots of questions of our Subject Coordinators (SCOs) about what to expect from their electives next year, as well as asking some good questions about how they fit into senior pathways.

As the due date for selection in tomorrow, it’s encouraged to have one last discussion if there any lingering questions prior to the deadline.

Just as a reminder of the options and some FAQs, please see the handbook here – Year 9 into 10 2025 Courses of Study Booklet

Student Focus

Congratulations to Amelie Swann who has represented Redlands in the NSW team at the Gold Coast School Nationals Swimming Championships this week, as part of inaugural School Sport Games.

Amelie competed in the 50m butterfly event and reached the final to come 7th nationally and achieved a PB time. She was also part of two NSW relay teams for 6 x 50  open relay and the 15–16 year girls 4x50m freestyle relay, also recording PBs in both events and a 4th in age relay.

Year 8

Week 2 – Setting High Expectations for Year 8

With a week of Semester 1 under our belt, I took the time on Monday to reiterate the high expectations we hold for our Yr 8 cohort. We want to see them flourish across this final semester of their Stage 4 studies, developing their academic knowledge and understanding, and their social and emotional skills. In our Year Assembly at the start of the week, I reiterated a few important reminders that it would be valuable to reaffirm at home:

  • No Phones – phones need to be kept in lockers throughout the school day, to help students avoid being distracted.
  • Appropriate uniform – if students look the part, they are far more likely to bring their best selves to classes, activities and interactions with others. School uniform guidelines can be found on Pulse.
  • Responsible laptop use – students need to take ownership over managing their laptop use so that they remain focused and responsible during lessons.
  • Maximise the value of class time – you only get out what you put in. Students should aim to ask questions, complete tasks thoroughly and put their best efforts into activities. Be sure to reach out to teachers in you are unsure. Effort = success!

My final message to the cohort was to be kind, to be supportive and to be amazing humans! We hope to see Yr 8 embrace this mantra, particularly as they focus on the value of service this semester in our pastoral sessions and engage in service initiatives outside of school.

To support this focus further, we had our Redlands Service Coordinator, Ms Peterson, visit the cohort on Monday to discuss the importance of ‘Jeans for Genes’ day. After explaining the value of this cause and the powerful impact it has on supporting the development of cures for childhood genetic illness, Ms Peterson challenged the cohort to harness their service spirit and play a key role in providing baked goods for Friday’s upcoming ‘Jeans for Genes’ day charity bake sale. She also challenged them to embrace our Yr 8 service focus this term and work hard to find a service activity that not only appeals to their interests, but really helps to support a valuable cause.

Reminder: Jeans for Genes Day Bake Sale – Friday, August 2

Tomorrow, we will be celebrating ‘Jeans for Genes’ day at Redlands.

Did you know 1 in 20 children faces a birth defect or genetic disease? That equates to around 1 student per class! With these facts, a cause close to our hearts at Redlands is ‘Jeans for Genes’ day. This event is all about supporting medical research and raising funds for children and families living with genetic disorders.

Tomorrow, we will be promoting this cause with our own ‘Jeans for Genes’ day events. Students are encouraged to come to school in their favourite pair of jeans or denim clothing, as well as wearing the colour blue. For the privilege of dressing in casual clothes, a gold coin donation will be collected during Tutor. Students may also wish to purchase a blue ribbon at the school gates for $2 or to buy bake sale items in the Liggins Quad at recess.

Importantly, this year, Yr 8 are in charge of coordinating and running the bake sale. To this end, WE NEED YOUR HELP!

If you are able to bake some cookies, slices, brownies or cupcakes for the bake sale, that will go a huge distance towards helping us to raise important funds for the event. Please make sure there are no nuts in any baked goods! See the details below for how to get involved.

Whole School Term 3 Welcome Assembly

On Friday of last week, the school was able to gather together as a full community to welcome everyone back to Term 3. It was a significant moment, as it was one of the final times all the school captains would be able to speak to the student body. They engaged the audience with a simple question – why Redlands? The challenge was for students to reflect on why they valued their time and experiences at Redlands, and each school leader offered their own answer to the ‘why Redlands’ question. Even Mr Corcoran provided a response and, perhaps not surprisingly, his answer reflected the teaching staff’s response – the amazing students we have at Redlands!

During the assembly, we were also treated to some wonderful music numbers. I want to congratulate all the Yr 8 members of the choir who presented a catchy and exciting performance of the Weekend’s ‘Blinded by the Lights’ during the assembly. A special mention to Michelle Byron and Isabel Ciaramellano who led the singing so beautifully!

Gala Arts 2024

Wow! I will say it again – wow! If you did not get yourself a ticket to Gala Arts this year, then make sure you write it down in your calendar for 2025 because it was amazing!

On Friday of last week, the Redlands Gala Arts showcase was held at the Chatswood Concourse and it was a spectacular demonstration of the extreme talent Redlands students possess in instrumental, vocal, photography, theatre, and dance. The confidence our students demonstrated in stepping out in front of a crowded auditorium to showcase their performing arts talents was commendable and the quality of performances was so high that is was easy to forget that it was just high school students on stage.

I want to extend a huge congratulations to all the Year 8 students who auditioned for Gala Arts, and particularly commend those who were selected to perform as part of the showcase. Well done to:

  • ‘Who’s on First?’ (Theatre) – Matvey Krapovnitsky
  • ‘His Daughter’ (Dance) – Phoebe Sun
  • ‘Checkmate’ (Dance) – Freya Carroll, Juliet Cooke, Ada Grossman, Anabelle Kendrigan, Adabelle Lee, Zoe Murdoch and Lily Musgrave-Kresa
  • ‘A Musical’ from ‘Something Rotten’ (Theatre) – Leo Campbell and Mackenzie Willis
  • ‘Electricity’ from ‘Billy Elliot’ – Mackenzie Willis

Congratulations also to William Chee, Zac Fowler and Connor Price who were the photography finalists, with Zac Fowler winning the category; and Phoebe Dawson-Damer who was an integral member in the backstage production team.

I look forward to the amazing performances that will be on stage in 2025. They certainly have a tough act to follow!

Year 8 Student Led Conferences – Week 3

In Week 3, on Wednesday 7 August, parents and carers of students in Yr 8 will have the chance to discuss their child’s progress with their teachers in the student led conferences. These conferences are an excellent opportunity to connect with teachers and gain insight into your child’s strengths and areas for development.

To help students take ownership over this process, during Tutor Time next week, we will work on planning scripts and question prompts for students to lead these conversations, such as introducing parents to their teachers and seeking to identify their perceived strengths and weaknesses in the subject. This student led process will help students to take ownership over identifying and addressing where they can improve in their engagement, diligence or behaviour during lessons.

Academic Assessment Services – Week 3

On 7 August, Year 8 students will sit a half day of testing provided by Academic Assessment Services from 8.25am – 12.10pm in Redlands Hall. Students will need to bring a pen and a scientific calculator (not a CAS) to the test. As independent consultants, they specialise in the assessment and analysis of educational performance and progress. Their team of professionals include measurement and curriculum experts, education experts and teachers who will provide guidance in the development of strategic action plans for each student. Parents will be emailed a copy of the results.

Club Spotlight – Beekeeping Club and Gardening Club

The opportunities for students to engage in a range of fun clubs and activities continues to grow at Redlands. Joining a lunchtime club is an excellent way to learn new skills and knowledge and broaden one’s social circle, so I challenge students to get involved in a new club this term. A full list of Redlands club offerings can be found on Pulse and students might consider the following two to get them started!

Recently, bee hives were put onto the roof of the Learning Hub and students have been having a wonderful time processing honey, making candles and lip balm and learning all there is to know about the ancient art of beekeeping in the Beekeeping Club. So, get busy like a little bee and buzz along to the club on Tuesdays Week A at lunchtime on the Learning Hub rooftop.

With some wonderful nurturing, our Gardening Club also continues to flourish and grow (see what I did there?), engaging students by giving them the opportunity to design garden plots, build plant support, harvest produce and even gain their own healthy snacks from the garden! Whether you are new to gardening or have a green thumb, this is a club worth checking out on Monday and Thursdays at lunchtime on the Learning Hub rooftop.

Subject Selection – Yr 7 into Yr 8

The time has come for us to ask you and your children to select Languages and Arts subjects for Year 8.

Redlands places great emphasis on these subjects and our 7 to 10 curriculum structure reflects this. We require our students to continue one of their languages from Year 7 into Year 8. We also ask them to select one of the Arts subjects – Dance, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre or Visual Arts to study in Year 8. The subject selection booklet provides detailed information on the subjects to be studied in Year 8. The booklet also explains how it is possible to study two languages in Year 8 and what students intending to study the International Baccalaureate in Years 11 and 12 need to bear in mind when choosing their language for Year 8. An overview of the Redlands curriculum structure in Years 7 and 8 is also outlined. We encourage you to read this booklet and discuss the options with your child.

Subject selection is a web-based process. In coming days, your child will be sent a web code to their school email from a site called Edval. The last few pages of the booklet explain how to make their choices via the Edval site. The due date for subject selection submissions has now been revised to Friday 30 August 2024, to assist students in making a more informed choice of Language for Year 8.

On Tuesday 6th August, Ms Rolon (Dean of Studies 7-10) will speak to the Yr 7 students as a year group to explain the electives and the process and their tutors will be supporting them during pastoral care time next week.

Student Visit to NASA – Jackson Humphreys

‘I’d really like to share my recent journey into the world of space exploration, after participating in Space Camp at NASA in Houston.

I learnt so much about engineering by exploring the Rocket Saturn V, and was able to participate in the Conrad Challenge, which was an opportunity to solve real problems encountered by NASA, using innovative solutions from young people.

We built our own working rocket models and pitched our ideas in a Shark Tank style presentation to a panel of Astronauts, Scientists, and previous Conrad prize winners.

At the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL), the largest pool in America, I watched astronauts train for the Artemis mission. I also underwent water training, where we used scuba diving to simulate low-gravity conditions and performed various underwater tasks as a team, including having to escape a landing pod underwater, in simulated crash conditions.

Meeting inspiring veteran Astronauts like Bill McArthur and Mike Foreman and undergoing Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HEUT) were highlights of the trip. HEUT was particularly challenging, and I realised the importance of having a clear plan in emergencies and remaining calm under pressure.

Visiting Mission Control and learning about the history of moon landings was fascinating. It was inspiring to see how NASA’s persistence, positivity, and teamwork turned an impossible goal into reality.

I’m really grateful I was able to go to NASA and am even more excited about aeronautics and space exploration than I was before!’

Friday Jeans for Genes

This year’s Jeans for Genes Day will be taking place Week 2 Friday 2 August! This event is all about supporting medical research and raising funds for children and families living with genetic disorders.

On Friday Week 2, students can come to school in their favourite pair of jeans or denim clothing, as well as the colour blue. For the privilege of dressing down, a gold coin donation will be collected during Tutor. Students may also wish to purchase a blue ribbon before school for $2, or buy a bake sale item in the Liggins Quad at recess.

Friday Olympic Tutor Group

On Friday during Pastoral Care, Yr 7 Tutor Groups will enjoy some time watching the best Olympic moments from the games so far. If any of our wonderful Yr 7 parent community are able to donate some Aussie Treats (Lammingtons, Tim Tams etc…) to make this event extra special, please feel free to drop them off at the Senior School Reception.

Assembly Theme

In this week’s Junior Assembly, we reflected on how individual success is built on the foundation of teamwork. Using the very topical example of Olympic Gold Medal winner Simone Biles, who clearly possesses extraordinary talent and dedication, she frequently highlights the crucial support she gets from her coaches, teammates and family in achieving her goals. Her story underscores the importance of collaboration and mutual support, reminding us that behind every successful individual, there is a team of people who contribute to their success. I challenged each of our students to consider who is on their team, be they family, teachers, coaches, tutors or friends, and to be grateful for the invaluable role they play.

NAPLAN – The NAPLAN results are now available. We are pleased to share that Redlands’ scores are well above the national average in both literacy and numeracy. Especially impressive is the reading average for our Year 3 and Year 5 students, which is in the highest proficiency band.  Parents will receive their child’s Individual Student Report (ISR) by post.  If you have any questions regarding the results, please feel free to raise them directly with your child’s teacher.

Jeans for Genes Day

Friday 2 August

This year’s Jeans for Genes Day will be taking place tomorrow. This event is all about supporting medical research and raising funds for children and families living with genetic disorders.

Did you know 1 in 20 children faces a birth defect or genetic disease? That’s around 1 per class!

On Friday Week 2, students can come to school in their favourite pair of jeans or denim clothing, as well as the colour blue. For the privilege of dressing down, a gold coin donation will be collected at the start of the day.

There is also a donations page where you can make a direct contribution to our fundraising efforts found at the link or QR Code below.

A message from our Dean of Students, Katie–Louise Clinton

On Tuesday 30th July our Year 6 Wellbeing leaders attended the IPSHA NSW Wellbeing Umbrella Group and were outstanding Redlands ambassadors! This was an engaging learning experience for our Redlands students to showcase our well-rounded approach to supporting student wellbeing and engagement. Some key highlights included:

  • Interactive Exercises: Our wellbeing leaders facilitated a whole-room icebreaker and ran a mind and movement break. They also introduced the “5 Finger” breathing technique, emphasising the importance of recognising and managing emotions through a toolkit of mindful moments and mini breaks to create a calm environment, using the Zones of Regulation language.
  • Buddy Programs: Initiatives such as lunchtime picnics, student-led clubs, and cross-grade connection time have been instrumental in building relationships and fostering a sense of community from P-6.
  • Lunchtime Clubs: The Lunch Time Friendship Club, Prep Wellbeing Clubs, Chess, Construction, and Drawing Clubs are student led with teacher support. The clubs have grown in popularity and this has contributed to enhancing social skills and strengthening connections among students.
  • Student Voice and Advocacy: Students actively participate in school events, lead parent tours, and present in assemblies, showcasing their advocacy and involvement across all corners of the school.
  • Service and Fundraising: Students have played a significant role in fundraising efforts, where students contribute ideas and participate and support events to raise funds for Bear Cottage, Jeans for Genes Day, and Wayside Chapel.

Parents Circles: Responsive Parenting and Raising Healthy Children

Being a responsive parent sounds simple enough, but living high-stress lives, often in isolation, lots of us know how nearly impossible it can be. Recognising that the essential condition for a healthy child’s development is the child’s relationship with nurturing adults, I invite you to join me for regular Parents’ Circles.

The Parents’ Circles will draw on specific topics and will be centred on providing a space for open discussions and questions.

The next Parents’ Circle will take place in Week 6 in the Prep Library, after school drop off. We welcome our prep and junior school parents to attend. Please feel free to bring your own coffee or tea. As this is a parenting circle of support, numbers are limited to 20 to keep it small enough for interactive discussion, so please book your space here LINK

In Week 6 (28/08/24), we will be exploring the topic of Defense Mechanisms

  • Defence mechanisms in children are often adaptive strategies for coping with stress and managing emotions. Understanding these mechanisms can help parents provide appropriate support and guidance to help their children navigate challenges.
  • Distinguishing between defence mechanisms and learning about the roles defence mechanisms play.
  • What defence mechanism do I use as a parent and how does this impact my child?

Exploring healthy coping mechanisms that equip parents to navigate challenging situations more effectively and promote their children’s emotional well-being

I’ve invited you to fill in a form:

100 Days of Kindergarten!

A Message from Ms Georgina Knox

On Monday, our Kindergarten students reached a fantastic milestone: 100 days of Kindergarten! To mark this special occasion, we organised a day full of exciting and educational activities that had our young learners buzzing with enthusiasm.

The celebrations kicked off with the making of colourful crowns, each adorned with “100” to symbolise the number of days they’ve been in school. The children proudly wore their crowns throughout the day, beaming with the accomplishment of reaching this significant point in their learning journey.

One of the highlights was the sharing of collections of 100 items. From buttons to beads and LEGO pieces to stickers, the creativity was truly impressive. Each child had the opportunity to present their collection to the class, explaining how they gathered their items and counting them out aloud.

The celebration continued with building challenges centred around the number 100. The students worked in teams to construct towers, bridges, and other structures using 100 blocks or other building materials. This hands-on activity encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, all while having loads of fun.

Our 100 Days of Kindergarten celebration was a memorable event that combined fun with learning, highlighting the incredible progress our students have made since the beginning of the school year. It was a joy to see their faces light up with pride and excitement and we look forward to many more milestones to come.

Thank you to all the families for your continued support and for helping make our 100-day celebration a huge success!

Redlands Olympic Week – Let the Games Begin!

Ms Jacqui Longworth

The Olympic Games are a grand celebration of sportsmanship and unity, where athletes from all over the world come together to compete in events that test their strength, speed, and skill. But more than just winning medals, the Olympics are about sharing joy, making new friends, and showing the world what it means to pursue your dreams with passion and determination.

This week we kicked off our Redlands Olympics with our very own Opening Ceremony.  It was fantastic to see the smiling faces of all the students as they proudly marched and waved their class flag to the Olympic fanfare from the Brass Ensemble.  The class flags with various Olympic themed designs can be seen in Reception.

Thank you to our French speaking hosts, Melissa Macedo and Finn Quigley who led our ceremony with many special guests.  Felix Chadwick had the honour to raise the Australian flag as our singers Lenny Cronk, Miabella Caralis-Bear, Julian Hao, Araminta Whitelaw, Nathanial Zhao and Elaine Zhang and took to the stage.  Jack Banham and Summer Mumm read the Athletes Oath, preparing our athletes for the fortnight ahead.

Shiv Rana and Amy Selvi held the Australian and French flags proudly alongside the Torch relay where we had footballers Tarik Blight, Riley Scanlon and Axel Loop pass the torch onto rugby players James Scott and Peter Ward.  Lara Wong, Laskhmi Valanju, Millie Boase, Tessa Willis and Sophia Giannotti Tann demonstrated their superb gymnastics skills passing the torch to our sprinters Max Von Konigsmark and Sebastian Scott.

The Redlands Rhino and the French Phryges mascots led Artemis Watson and Antonios Panagakis who presented Mrs Breckenridge with the Olympic Flame.

A new addition to the Olympic events this year is Breaking.  The students were lucky enough to have a break dancing demonstration and then take part in a breakdancing workshop, learning some cool new moves and putting it together for a grand celebration.

The Amazing Race took place on Tuesday with students travelling all over the world, getting stamps in their passports as they completed various challenges.  The students worked out clues to get them to their new country where they completed maths, drama, sport, research, design, art, steam, French and music challenges.  There were screams of delight as students worked together to figure out the clues and race to the finish line!

PE lessons this week have been Olympic themed with many sports on offer in a skills based session or team challenges. This week we have enjoyed
Paris tag, soccer, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, archery, javelin, discus, long jump, springing, long distance running, tennis, badminton, rowing, European handball, lacrosse, as well as a few events from the winter Olympics and Paralympics including team ski, skeleton, bobsled, seated volleyball and goal ball.

More events to come next week!

Lunchtimes have brought about some optional Chess Olympics this week, with Maths and Debating next week.

Prep Fun Run

Don’t forget that tomorrow we will be holding our very own Olympic Marathon (a Fun Run style event) where students will run a set course around the Junior Campus.  Parents are very welcome to spectate and cheer on the students.

  • Where: Junior Campus Oval Friday 2/8/24
  • What to wear: New uniform or PE uniform
  • What to bring: Hat and water bottle. Normal crunch and sip, recess, lunch. The canteen will be operating as usual.
  • Timing: Normal school day drop offs and pick-ups.  Regular afterschool activities will still occur.
    • 11am-12pm = Year 2 (Walk the course, run in small groups)
    • 12pm-1pm = Kindy and Year 1 (Walk the course, run in small groups)
    • Students will be collected from their classroom, taken to the oval for their event, and then return to their classroom for their regular learning activities.
  • Spectators: Parents and caregivers are welcome to watch from the side of the oval.  A designated area will be marked out for you.  Doors will be open from after 10.45am.

Jeans for Genes Day

Friday 2nd August

This year’s Jeans for Genes Day will be taking place tomorrow, Friday 2 August! This event is all about supporting medical research and raising funds for children and families living with genetic disorders.

As Friday 2nd August is our Olympic Prep Fun Run, students will not be able to wear denim to school but to support the cause, students are welcome to wear a touch of blue and bring in a gold coin donation.

Save the Date

2024 Book Week

Book Week is nearly here, and we are excited about the 2024 theme, Reading is Magic

The purpose of Book Week is to foster a love of reading in children and to celebrate children’s literature. For that reason, we will celebrate in the Preparatory School by looking at two Australian picture books, The Concrete Garden by Bob Graham and an oldie, but goodie, The Magic Hat by Mem Fox.

There will be many activities happening in prep that week with the highlight being the Prep School Magic Hat Day on Tuesday 20th August.

Your child can come to school wearing a magic hat! They may wear just a hat, or the hat may be part of a whole outfit. Please talk to your child about who wears hats. It might be a book character. For example, a wizard or a goblin, but it might also be part of a person’s work clothes outfit. For example, a chef, fireman, magician, cowboy etc. Talk about the magic that their hat might possess. What can it do?

At our prep assembly on this day, children will showcase their hats and talk about their magical properties, or they could even talk about what their hat symbolises or what its’ purpose is.

Book Week is also a good reminder to parents, that no child is too old to be read to. Talk to your children about what they like reading, what you like reading and what you could read together, then come to the library and borrow a serial for Book Week or a book for each night before bed.

The Reading Is Magic theme for 2024 brings with it an air of wonderment, highlighting fantastical stories, spellbinding narratives, and the wizardry of words that can whisk us away from our daily realities to worlds unknown.

Please drop in to the Lucy Hill Library if you would like more information or to have a chat with Mrs Roberts about the events of the week. It is sure to be a lot of fun.

NAPLAN

The NAPLAN results are now available for parents in Years 3 and 5.

What a great reflection of the prep school’s strong literacy and numeracy program.

Exciting Olympic Celebrations at Redlands

This week, our Senior and PreK students have been buzzing with excitement as they participated in special events to celebrate the Olympic Games. On Monday, the students joined the Prep School on the oval for a grand opening ceremony. We joined together with the Prep School students, everyone coming together to kick off the week of Olympic-themed activities. Wednesday was another highlight, with various sports activities held in the gym. The children had a fantastic time trying different sports, many of which were new to them. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to engage in diverse activities and discover new interests. We look forward to continuing the Olympic spirit and fostering a love for sports and teamwork among our students.

Jeans 4 Genes Day

On Friday, 2nd August, Redlands House will be participating in Jeans for Genes Day. As a long-time supporter of this fantastic cause, we look forward to involving both our Junior and Prep schools in this special event. To support this worthy cause, we will encourage students to wear jeans on the day with a gold coin donation. All proceeds will go towards supporting genetic research and helping children with genetic conditions.

Secondary Sport

It certainly has been a winter season, a huge thank you to all those teams that have braved the elements over the weekends to get out there, show grit and determination and play or train no matter the conditions. We are coming to an end of the winter season, which means we are about to transition through to Summer Sport, registrations for Summer Sport will open towards the end of next week. Please ensure prior to registering for your sports you have read and understood the requirements for each sport. There may be some adjustments to training schedules and alike, however sporting activities take priority on Tuesday and Thursday and supersede any other co-curricular activity.

Next week will see the last round of the ISA Winter Competition, but some teams are progressing through to the finals the following weeks. Teams who progress through to finals will continue with their regular training schedule.

As we move through the motions of the year, I feel it is timely to talk about resetting our mindsets. There is a large difference between having to do something and being able to do something. The way we frame this has a huge impact on our psychology and how we experience things, and the language around this is the most powerful tool. Our habits, our work ethic and our thoughts all work together in order to complete tasks. Take ownership of your thoughts, the truth is you don’t have to do anything, everything is a choice, but our choices have consequences. What you do is what you choose to do, but how you experience it is ultimately up to you. Being able to reframe your mind will allow you to reframe your experience. As opposed to ‘I have to do x…’ try these 3 options:

  • ‘I get to do.. ’
  • ‘I choose to do..’
  • ‘I’m blessed to do..’

If you feel like you’re losing everything, remember that trees lose their leaves every year, and they still stand tall and wait for better days to come.

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)

Football

Welcome back everyone to Round 8 of the ISA competition!

As you probably know by now there are no easy games in the ISA competition.

On a wet and cold morning our teams faced very good opponents – Barker College, Central Coast Grammar and St Pius College.

Every game we play is important as we are try to get as many teams as possible in the Semifinals.  Our girls had 4 excellent wins out of 5 games and the boys suffered some tough losses but also very good wins.

Round 9 is promising to be a tough one as the Girls will play away at St Andrews Cathedral and the boys are at home against Oakhill College.

Thank you everyone for supporting our Redlands Football Teams this weekend.

Great game on the weekend Charlie Hugman in goals for the First XI Girls!

Netball

It was wonderful to see everyone back at netball this past week! Training resumed as usual on Tuesday, and we enjoyed several successes across Redlands Netball, with victories against Barker and the Blue Mountains. Congratulations to the Senior 1st VII team for their narrow 40-36 win against the Blue Mountains.

Please note that game times and locations for this weekend’s round (Saturday, 3rd August) have been updated on Redlands Rhino. Be sure to check the times and ensure students arrive at the locations 30 minutes before their scheduled game.

A special mention goes to the following students who stood out in their games over the weekend:

  • Poppy Jennings (Inter A)
  • Darcy Mennie (Inter C)
  • Ruby Gasmus (Inter D)
  • Abigail Cairns (Junior A)
  • Sienna De Saxe (Junior D)

I’d also like to extend my thanks to all the students who played for other teams over the weekend. Your willingness to play up in higher teams and step out of your comfort zones was a tremendous help!

Quick Reminders:

  • If you wish to transport your child to an away venue, please email sports@redlands.nsw.edu.au before Saturday.
  • If your child is unable to attend training or games, please log an absence via the Sports Absence Form available on Redlands Pulse.

Rugby

Draft fixtures are loaded on the Rugby Pulse page for the remainder of the season to help students and families plan ahead, simple scroll down to the Live draw.

Weekly wrap up:

Despite the mud, our Year 7’s and Opens teams managed to get a run last Saturday. A huge win to kick start the term with our opens going ahead 52-7 after moving up divisions at the end of last term.

A special mention to our year 7 team who had a significant turnaround against St Pats. Following a mercy rule game early in Term 2, the Year 7 team played out of their skin in a rematch, eventually going down in an incredibly close 17-14 Loss.

Both teams should be congratulated on starting the term with amazing efforts. We hope those uniforms recovered from all the mud!

Trainer of the week: This season we will name players/trainers of the week throughout the term on Note Day each week. These players demonstrate commitment to the team in training and strong performance in games.

  • 13’s:Joao Correia Cardoso de Melo Segorbe & Lachlan Murphy

  • 15’s: Charlie Reeves
  • Opens : Max Perry

Amelie is now getting ready for NSW Senior State in August and Short Course Nationals in Adelaide in September.

Tennis

Unfortunately the majority of the tennis matches against St Pius School were cancelled last Saturday due to the wet weather.

Central Coast Grammar School travelled to Mosman and managed to complete the match against ISA Redlands 11.

Well done ISA 11 and a special congratulations to Michelle Byron, Andy Guan, Ina Guan, Lucas Law and Johnny Shiao.

ISA 11 won the match 6-2 in tough conditions, but also Central Coast Grammar School spoke very highly of the team and the sportsmanship and respect that they showed during and after the matches.

This is such an important part of playing matches and being part of a team and we are very proud of ISA 11 so very well done!

We have had some great training sessions this week and are looking forward to the matches this Saturday against Oakhill College.

There are only a few rounds of matches left this season so let’s put in a huge effort this Saturday!

  • Total rest at home for 24-48 hours until symptom-free
  • Monitoring severity of symptoms when active
  • Graduated Return to Sport Framework

For all other information please refer to our Junior School Sport Concussion page which can be found here.

I have put together a training plan aimed at those students who would not normally train leading up to our school carnival which is scheduled for Wednesday 14 August. As you know any training for Athletics and Cross Country takes place well in advance of the carnival itself.

You are under no obligation to use this training plan, it is a suggested resource we have put together for those families who want to work on carnival preparation for the weeks leading up to our school carnival.

To download and or view this training it can be found under ‘Files’ on Pulse on the Athletics Page.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Drama and Theatre

“Away” by Michael Gow

Tickets are on sale here for the annual Redlands School play, Away by Michael Gow, to be performed at the Zenith Theatre, Chatswood on Thursday 8, Friday 9 (6.30pm) and Saturday 10 (2pm) August. It’s going to be a great performance, come along, support the amazing Redlands students involved and enjoy a great night of theatre.  Here’s a couple of sneak peaks from the most recent rehearsal.

Suzuki Reflection I

This week, as part of our research and experiential learning into World Theatre Traditions our IB Theatre class had the privilege of learning the basics of Suzuki, a Japanese form of physical theatre from the mid 20th Century. Led by practitioner Shane Anthony, we discovered how to control each aspect of our body and wholly release tension, a practice that has many applications in drama, even outside of Suzuki. To train this, we learned a variety of exercises that proved to be incredibly mentally and physically challenging, requiring a high degree of focus and fluidity to apply correctly. These included multiple intricate stepping patterns, in which the actor must remain in complete control of their bodies. We all are greatly appreciative of the opportunity and can’t wait to apply these practices to future work!

Yr 11 IB Theatre Student

Suzuki Reflection II

On Monday, we had Shane Anthony come in to lead a workshop on the World Theatre Tradition of Suzuki. Shane is a director, producer, dramaturg and movement coach and we were lucky enough to have his extensive knowledge passed onto us. From this workshop, some of my key takeaways were the idea of using the body as an instrument for theatre, by almost removing yourself from your body and simply using it as a vehicle to facilitate theatre. This meant learning and practising very precise movement, controlling and manipulating your body even in moments of stillness and always having a deep understanding of your body and what it is doing. Putting this idea, which Suzuki presents, into practice was very challenging for all of us, as we reflected on how having control of our body at all times, even of our face, breath and muscles, was very strenuous and tiring. However, this allowed us to make very controlled, intentional movements to convey our meaning through theatre. This also included never letting your audience know what you as an individual are feeling. There idea was that you should always draw attention to yourself as an actor, even when you aren’t speaking or even facing the audience. Shane talked about harnessing the emotion which as an actor, you wish to portray, and projecting that onto the audience, even when you aren’t in the focus of the performance. Overall, this was a very useful experience for me to better understand the different types of theatre in the world around us!

Excursion: Dracula

Last week, Year 10 Drama embarked on a journey to the iconic Roslyn Packer Theatre in the Rocks to see Sydney Theatre Company’s new (and sold out) production of Dracula, directed by Artistic Director Kip Williams. The third part in his Gothic cine-theatre trilogy, the show synthesised a number of innovative film and theatre techniques to create an experience unlike anything the cohort had seen before. The use of mobile screens and multiple camera feeds in conjunction with Zahra Newman’s phenomenal solo performance was received as a remarkable new style of theatre by many of our students. As they embark on their next unit on multi-disciplinary theatre, they will find these ideas and techniques a source of great inspiration for their own pieces.
