Refreshed Redlands Learning Platform

The Redlands Learning Platform is the educational philosophy and framework that underpins all teaching and learning at Redlands. It provides a common language and core foundation of what both excellent teaching and learning look like in action.

The Redlands Learning Platform is a bespoke model, designed for the Redlands context, based on world-recognised learning frameworks and research, including Harvard University’s Teaching for Understanding and Making Thinking Visible. It was first designed in 2007, in response to the emerging changes in the modern world and the resultant implications for schooling and learning.  Redlands recognised at the time that there needed to be a shift from traditional schooling methods to more contemporary approaches to learning and teaching, in order to best prepare students for future life success. These changes have impacted upon how learning occurs, how teachers teach and the role students play in their own learning.

A decade later, the School has undertaken a collaborative process of reviewing the Redlands Learning Platform. This process reflects Redlands deep commitment to continuous improvement, to ensure the provision of meaningful and challenging learning for all students, in order to give them an exceptional advantage for life in a rapidly changing world.

The renewed Redlands Learning Platform draws on current international research, including Harvard University’s Cultures of Thinking, and builds on our strong foundations. It captures a learning journey that begins with who we are as a learning community and ends with our aspiration for Redlands students to achieve life-readiness and contribute to the world with compassion and confidence.

The following provides a snapshot of the renewed Redlands Learning Platform. Some of you may have noticed this image in classrooms or displayed on the electronic noticeboards at each campus of the school. Please click the image for a detailed graphic.

Looking closely at the Redlands Learning Platform, you will see:

  • the foundations upon which we build our teaching and learning at Redlands (that is, our identity, our why and our beliefs),
  • the actions teachers and learners take as they plan and learn together (our planning for teaching and our learning environment), and
  • the learning outcomes that we aspire to at Redlands to prepare students for the future (our learning attributes and our place in the world).

We believe that through our nurturing of the learning and of the learner attributes, Redlands students will have the opportunity to equip themselves with the skills, knowledge, character and dispositions that will help them find their place in the world, support future life success and promote active contribution to society.

Our teachers have already begun using the revised Redlands Learning Platform and are reporting that it provides them with a very useful tool for planning and implementing teaching and learning with their classes.

We next intend to create a version of our updated Redlands Learning Platform specifically for parents that fleshes out the seven stages of our learning journey.

I encourage comments or questions about this Redlands Learning Journey and the refreshed Redlands Learning Platform to be addressed to either our Head of Teaching and Learning (Dr Emma Burgess: eburgess@redlands.nsw.edu.au) or our Dean of Teaching and Learning (Mr Nigel Coutts: ncoutts@redlands.nsw.edu.au).

Year 12 Trial Examinations

These Examinations begin next week and I wish all our Senior students the very best. They will be doing their examinations off-site, as they have done all their previous exams over the past two years due to the construction work on the Senior Campus.

I also advise all parents to read the following message from Deputy Principal Ms Sarah McGarry.

Dr Peter Lennox

Emergency Procedures at Redlands

As parents may be aware, in the first two weeks of this term we have conducted Lockdown and Evacuation Drills on both Sydney campuses – Junior and Senior. This same exercise will be repeated at High Country Campus, in Jindabyne, at a later time in the term. These are part of our ongoing Emergency Procedures training.

As a School we have an Emergency Planning Committee, we have extensive emergency management plans in place, we train our students and staff, we conduct planned drills periodically and reflect and analyse when unplanned evacuations occur.

Our Plans

The School works with emergency management specialists to develop and implement safety procedures, and the goals of drills throughout the year are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries, in the event of an emergency situation. These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency response plans and improve our response skills.

We do not generally announce in advance whether a lockdown or an evacuation is a planned exercise. It is essential for the safety of our students, staff and any campus visitors, that they are very familiar with our processes and can perform the required steps to complete a safe lockdown or evacuation without forewarning. In the case of younger children, we practise these more frequently so that they are not unduly alarmed in the case of a drill.

We are pleased with the outcome of our recent drills and feel reassured that our safety plans can be implemented effectively by our staff. On both our Senior and Junior Campuses, students have been reminded about what to do in the case of a lockdown or an evacuation and all new students are provided with this information when they start at the School. This information is also contained in the front section of the Student Planner.

Communication

Students are not, under any circumstances, permitted to use their mobile phone during a lockdown or an evacuation.

We would usually not communicate to parents that we are undertaking a lockdown or evacuation unless it resulted in a serious emergency requiring a longer disruption to the School day.

If an emergency situation does continue to disrupt the day, the School will communicate to parents via SMS if it is safe to do so.

In the case of an emergency situation requiring parents to collect their children, the School will communicate to parents with specific details about pickup arrangements.

Site Access

No person may enter or leave the site during an evacuation or lockdown, including students, staff, parent visitors or helpers. If you are onsite during an evacuation or lockdown, you must follow the instructions of the staff, in particular the wardens (wearing coloured safety helmets).

Please talk with your child, if you deem it appropriate, about the recent drills. Our goal, while practising important safety procedures, is to be sure all students feel safe and confident in how to respond. If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or tutor.

Culture of Giving at Redlands

I would like to thank all the families who supported the School in the last financial year and joined the annual giving initiative. Your support makes a difference and helps the School to invest and support areas that are important to our students, staff and the whole school community.

We are very fortunate at Redlands that we have a long history of community that recognises the importance of supporting the School by making a donation, volunteering their time or leveraging their corporate relationships.

Over the last school holidays, the development work progressed and the main entrance to the new Music Centre was completed which created some additional outdoor space for our students.

Head of Secondary School

Learn How You Learn

I hope all students have had time to reflect on their reports from Semester 1, either over the holidays or at the beginning of this term, and have set goals and developed strategies for how they might continue to improve academically over the second half of the year. With Yr 7 and 8 Parent Teacher Evenings in Weeks 2 and 3 this term, I thought it was an appropriate time to share some of the messages I regularly give to students in my Yr 7 English class which I believe are particularly important for all students in their first few years of Secondary School. While students often get caught up in grades and marks, numbers and percentages, and see these as an “end point”, I remind students in my class that the most important accomplishment they should strive for in these first few years of their schooling is to “Learn How You Learn” and “Learn About Your Learning”. I believe that it is this focus on critical and honest self-reflection (a skill which can be challenging to develop in adolescents) which will best prepare for them for their later years of schooling and assist them in being a self-directed learner. Therefore, I would encourage all students, but particularly those in Yrs 7 and 8, to “look beyond the grade” and think about the strategies and approaches which help you learn best for years to come.

Yr 12 HSC and IB Drama Group Performances

On Tuesday evening, I was fortunate enough to attend the group performances for the Yr 12 HSC and IB Drama classes. While I once again enjoyed the outstanding showcase of the Yr 12 Drama students on the stage, I was not surprised by this aspect of the evening, as I have been privileged to see many of these students performing in various Redlands productions over the past few years. However, I was particularly impressed with the depth of thought which went into these performances and their willingness to take intellectual and creative risks on the stage. We often talk about developing a culture of thinking and deep understanding in our students at Redlands, and to me these performances illustrated the culmination of this approach and how successful it can be. Bravo to all of the performers, crew and teachers for their efforts!

Staffing Update

As mentioned in my letter to parents in the holidays, at the end of this week we bid farewell to Ms Kate Carolan, who is moving to Dubai to take up a teaching position at an international school. We thank her for all of the contributions she has made to Redlands during her time at the school and we wish her all the best on her return to the international school scene. We are fortunate to have secured the services of Mr Conrad Del Villar in the English Department who is a highly experienced HSC and IB teacher and who will be taking Ms Carolan’s English classes and Tutor Group. In addition, at the end of Week 4, French teacher, Ms Sophie Masson, will be leaving Redlands to also take up a teaching position in Dubai which will bring her closer to home in the Northern hemisphere. We wish her all the best on this move and thank her for all of the contributions she has made during her time at Redlands. We look forward to welcoming Ms Dominique Barbeau to Redlands, who is also a highly experienced HSC and IB Languages teacher and who will be taking Ms Masson’s French classes and Tutor Group.

Cyber Safety Presentation

On Monday, cyber safety expert Brett Lee was at Redlands to deliver presentations throughout the day to students in Yrs 7-10 as well as a presentation to parents in the evening. I know a number of the students and parents found these presentations quite informative. He focused on five key principles to stay safe online which I thought would be useful to share with all parents:

  • Set rules and boundaries – just like other areas of life, there should be clear rules associated with technology use. Rules are not meant to stop children having fun, they are to protect them. Some useful rules should focus on time limits and curfews, an understanding of what language is acceptable, guidelines of where in the home technology can and can’t be used, what websites, games and apps can be used, and what to do if something of concern happens or a mistake is made.
  • Stay current – this involves parents being across what children generally do on the internet, when children are going online, what programs/software/games they are using. You can stay current by talking to their children and other adults, seek advice or contact the school for guidance.
  • Take charge – ensure technology is not taking charge. Be aware of what technology is used, where and when. What sites are being accessed and where these are occurring. Remove technology from bedrooms – this should be a safe space.
  • Use management controls – parents have a right to know where their children go and whom they communicate with.
  • Communicate – create an environment of openness about technology and talk about it with your children.

Chaplain

Thankfulness is an important quality that the Student Representative Council (SRC) has focused on during the training for the Semester 2 SRC team. The students were asked to first identify the areas and aspects of the School for which they are thankful. The answers give a  great snapshot of the view of the school from the students perspective:

  • Such great teachers
  • The experiences we are allowed to do
  • How the School pushes me to try things I never would have done otherwise
  • The teachers and the contribution they make
  • The community
  • The rich sporting opportunities and options available
  • The Music Centre
  • All the Cocurricular opportunities
  • Friends
  • The way it pushes me to be the best person possible
  • The great classrooms which are great learning places
  • The culture and atmosphere
  • How the classroom is fun
  • That we include everyone no matter what

The SRC is one of the ways we develop leadership in the school and, as Chaplain, I have the opportunity to invest in these students. At SRC, students discuss ways to change and improve the School so the students also need a strong sense of the strengths of our learning community.

Gratitude is an important habit to develop. The Psalms in the bible are full of songs of thanks which sustained the community in the bible through difficult and challenging times. This attitude of thanksgiving builds resilience, optimism and is a great antidote to arrogance. While Christians reflect their thanksgiving in prayer, we all can take time to be thankful for the small and large good things we enjoy. We can all thank that person who has encouraged or helped us or just done their job well. I like to make lists of all the things, actions and people for which I am thankful. Take a moment and give thanks.

Mock Trial

The Yr 11 Mock Trial team had a convincing win on Wednesday night, by 50 points, against St Ives High School in the first elimination round. This means they are undefeated and now progress through to the last 32 NSW schools. The case was a criminal trial of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, where we presented evidence as the Prosecution, that the victim (Isabel Binnekamp) had been assaulted by her husband. The police officer in the case (Mackenzie Lofts) also gave evidence as to what happened on that fateful day. Our case was opened by Lachlan van der Pluijm, who was the first barrister, and closed by Lindsay McNeil, the second barrister. They were instructed by their quick-thinking solicitor, Chloe Woodward. Perri Carmichael controlled the court and assisted the Magistrate during the trial. The team will very shortly be preparing their next trial which will be released by NSW Law Society imminently. Congratulations to Ms Rebecca Mountain and the team!

Fiji Service Learning Trip – October

Students in Yr 9 have kicked off their planning and fundraising for their Fiji Service Learning expedition in the October school holidays. Students will be undertaking a Service project in Nausori Highlands, an area famous for its remote villages, rich in cultural tradition and appreciation of the land. During this time they will also billeted with families in the community. This expedition has both a Service and an environmental focus with students visiting an eco-lodge overlooking Momi Bay. The students spend time learning about the connection between what happens on land and how it impacts marine life. They will also spend time in the National Park of Sigatoka sand dunes participating in a beach cleanup, some reforestation planting and studying the components of a reef ecosystem, as well as building fish houses and coral planting.

Students will be seeking opportunities to do household chores at home and with family and friends to raise their contribution to make the Service project possible.

Trial Examinations

Trials are just that – an opportunity for students to test themselves in a similar context to their final examinations and learn from the experience. We are lucky at Redlands as we have enough time between trials and external examinations to receive meaningful feedback and reflect on it. There really are no pearls of wisdom for Yr 12 students as they prepare to sit their trial examinations over the next two weeks. The cohort has got a strong sense of what they need to do for Weeks 3 and 4 and have taken ownership of their approach to learning. The only advice for both parents and students is that what we focus on over the next two weeks will grow. If we focus on support, organisation and understanding, they will grow. If we focus on panic, pressure and disappointment, they will grow.

Careers and Universities

This is a very busy term for university visits. This week we had NYU visit on Tuesday in the Library. We thank Ms Salier for arranging so many opportunities for Yr 12 students this term as below:

During Pastoral Care earlier this week, the cohort attended the first Yr 11 Camp briefing with guest speakers from Outdoor Education Group (OEG). This year, Yr 11 Curriculum Camp will take place from Monday 15 to Friday 19 October at Redlands High Country Campus, Jindabyne and the nearby Kosciuszko National Park.

Facilitated by OEG, this program tests not only the field skills developed over their five year Outdoor Education journey but also promotes a high degree of independence and leadership. Students should take the time to prepare well for what will be the most challenging and rewarding Outdoor Education program yet! Students have had the opportunity to choose an appropriate challenge and program level. The selection includes choices such as a day walk, full five day expedition or for something different, a horse riding, skiing or even a Duke of Edinburgh styled journey with cycling, paddling and bushwalking.

Parents are advised to update their child’s medical information and correct contact details at their earliest convenience. This will ensure a smooth preparation process.

Please note the OEG website is currently undergoing reconstruction. Once it is available, I will inform you of the link related to our Camp and password.

Overview

Yr 8 have settled back in well to the start of Term 3 and are into the swing of the busy lives they have at Redlands. This week they were fortunate to hear from the cyber safety expert Brett Lee, who provided an informative session for them on Monday afternoon. He covered issues such as cyber bullying and responsible social media behaviour, and I am sure that the students felt much better informed of some of the dangers and issues surrounding the use of the internet.

Reminders
  • Students are reminded that they must select their Summer sport as soon as possible
  • Friday 3 August is Jeans for Genes Day and students are reminded to bring a gold coin and wear denim to school to help raise money for such a great cause.
  • Wednesday 8 August (next week) is Yr 8 Parent Teacher night and booking is now available online through an email that you would have received. Please be prompt with your bookings as some teachers have more than one class and will therefore have limited spaces available.
7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey

Yr 8 will be focusing on 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens (by Sean Covey) in their Tutor and Chapel sessions this term. There is a famous quote by the English poet, John Dryden, who says “We first make our habits, then our habits make us”. You may be interested in reading the book so you are aware of the areas that we will be focusing on. The first habit is “Be proactive – take responsibility for your life”, where students will be looking at how they need to take responsibility for their choices, think before they act, find ways to move forward and focus on things they can do something about.

Year 7

We’ve had another busy week in Yr 7 Pastoral Care….

  • Students completed Summer Sport registrations on iLearn. If your child is yet to do so, please make this a priority. Every student must complete the iLearn registration form. Details were sent to student emails via the Sports Department.
  • On Monday, Brett Lee presented to Yr 7 about staying safe in the cyber world. Students found information insightful and are already reporting steps they are taking to increase their online security. Useful resources for home reading can be found at the following websites Internet Safe Education, Office of the eSafety Commissioner and Raising Children Network. It was great to see some Yr 7 parents at Brett’s evening presentation.
  • On Tuesday, students were involved in their first Secondary School Leadership voting process, voting for Captains of Activities and Prefects for 2019. Yr 7 also assisted our 2018 Environment Prefects, Marcos and Kat, with emptying the school’s paper recycling. Much fun was had.

  • On Wednesday, students reviewed workload management, completing a Term 3 Planner to assist with managing home learning and assessment. Planners should be appearing in a public location at home shortly – keep your eyes peeled (or check the bottom of  school bags!) Students can find a printable copy of the Term Planner on the Yr 7 Pastoral iLearn Page under Study Skills. There are also a few spare copies in the Year Advisor’s office. To support students at home, more information on workload management can be found in the Study Skills Handbook (usename: redlands | password: 68results).
  • Wednesday night was Yr 7’s first Secondary School Parent Teacher Interviews. We hope that you and your child found the evening a valuable experience in assisting learning. Should subject specific questions arise, please contact subject teachers or Subject Coordinators.
  • On Friday, we sadly farewelled Ms Carolan and wish her the best of luck on her journey to Dubai. In Week 3, we welcome Mr Del Villa to our Yr 7 Pastoral team as the new Tutor for Dumolo Blue.
  • A reminder that Friday is also Jeans for Genes day. Redlands will be dressing in denim, double denim or more denim in support of this good cause. A gold coin donation will be collected during Tutor Time.

The Yr 7 Pastoral team wish you all a happy weekend!

National Swimming Success

We were thrilled to hear of the phenomenal swimming achievements again of Yr 6 student, Hannah Morton, who has been competing at the School Sports Australia Swimming Championships this past week in Hobart.

Hannah reached the final in all eight events that she competed in, winning an astonishing six medals. In the individual events, she won gold in the 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and silver in the 100m freestyle. Of particular note, Hannah lowered her NSW backstroke record three times during the course of the competition. Hannah also competed in the relay team for NSW and was part of teams who won three more gold medals.

By any standard, this is a fantastic achievement and we congratulate Hannah and also recognise her dedication to her training and continuous improvement.

Junior School Library News

This term, Junior School students will look at the shortlisted books from this year’s Children’s Book Council Australia. Connected to this, students will explore the Picture Books of the Year in Library lessons, with the Arnold Library stocking the Younger Readers titles, Eve Pownall’s non-fiction titles, and the Crichton Award for New Illustrators titles. We will be following who wins each of these categories during Book Week.

This year’s dates for the CBCA Children’s Book Week are 18-24 August, with the theme, Find Your Treasure. Again, we will be organising a dress-up on the Friday of Book Week, where the students can come dressed as a character linked to the Book Week theme or their favourite book character.

Please note that the Premier’s Reading Challenge concludes on 31 August and many students are well under way in reading the required number of 20 books. Students should have their usernames and passwords in their Student Planners or saved on their iPads.

And finally, we are extremely excited to be hosting the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2018 and 2019, Morris Gleitzman. Morris will visit Redlands to spend time with Yrs 3 and 4 on Thursday 30 August and then join Yrs 5 and 6 on the following day, Friday 31 August. Students are encouraged to read some of his books in advance of his visit. The Arnold Library will not be selling books on the day due to time constraints but if students do have personal copies of his books, we will do our best to have Morris sign them on the day, time permitting.

Staying with author visits, Yr 6 will also enjoy an additional author visit from Michael Adams in conjunction with the Secondary School Library on Tuesday 14 August.

Yr 3 Gallery Walk

Our Yr 3 students were excited to share their learning with parents this week during their gallery walk. These important opportunities for parents to engage in their child’s learning are very important to us as home and school work in partnership to support each child. My thanks are extended to the students and their teachers for their preparation of an engaging morning for parents.

Kids Need Books

Next week, Junior School will be invited to support a book drive initiative for Kids Need Books (KNB), a non-government organisation based in Hanoi, Vietnam which aims to address the shortage of English language children’s books in Vietnam and build a community library to provide early exposure to English as a second language. The drive is being led by four Yr 11 Redlands students with a passion for literature and service. Any donations of second hand books for children aged 0-10 years will be sent directly to Kids Need Books in Vietnam. The organisation also offers a book lending and delivery service to expand access to reading books to rural Vietnam, where the average child only reads no more than one book per year. A gold coin donation would also be appreciated and the four students, Lindsay, Alice, Sienna and Jasmine, will share their idea with the Junior School in our assembly next Monday.

Online Junior Campus Canteen

Parents should have received a detailed letter introducing our new online ordering system for the Junior Campus Canteen called Flexischools, which commences next Monday 6 August.

We hope this step forward will support families with a more convenient and efficient process of ordering from the Canteen but Junior School students (Yrs 3-6) will still be able to buy items from the Canteen at recess and lunch on an ad hoc basis. In the early stages of this transition towards an increasingly cashless canteen, an iPad will be situated at the Canteen for families who haven’t been able to pre-order food online before the 9am daily cut-off.

Jeans for Genes

A reminder that tomorrow sees Redlands supporting the Jeans for Genes charity across all sections of our School. Students will be permitted to wear mufti clothing, with denim encouraged, in return for a gold coin donation. In addition to this, a group of our Yr 6 girls will be holding a bake sale to raise additional funds for this charity.

Canteen Online Ordering

A letter was emailed earlier in the week to all Early Childhood families informing them of the exciting new online ordering system, Flexischools, beginning on Monday 6 August. Flexischools is a well-established organisation allowing you to easily place all your Canteen orders online. We hope this step forward will support families with a more convenient and efficient process of ordering from the Canteen. In the early stages of this transition towards an increasingly cashless Canteen, an iPad will be situated at the Canteen for families who haven’t been able to pre-order food online before the 9.00am daily cut-off. If you have any questions, please contact the Flexischools Customer Service Team on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website; www.flexischools.com.au.

Jeans for Genes Day

As a reminder, tomorrow, Friday 3 August, Redlands (P-12) will be supporting Jeans for Genes Day. It was established in 1994 by the Children’s Medical Research Institute to fund revolutionary research that helps diagnose, understand, and find cures or treatments for conditions affecting children, including genetic diseases, cancer, and epilepsy. The goal in their 25th year is $25 million, enough to create a new centre of collaboration, bringing world-leading scientists and doctors together to help Australian children with genetic disease. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation to wear jeans and mufti on this day. A reminder that sneakers are to be worn.

Spring Fair Planting

Michael Kniha, our School’s Horticulturist visited Transition Gold last week to help students with the planting of seeds to sell flowers and vegetables for the Spring Fair. He taught the students about seeds and what they need to do to look after them. Transition Gold had many questions for Mr Kniha which has sparked a class project. Gabby asked, “How do seeds know what to grow”?

The Spring Fair Committee have been busy preparing and organising for the Spring Fair on 15 September. The Coordination teams are working hard to ensure the day is great fun for everyone, most importantly the children. They are seeking donations of chocolate (big and small), lollies and lucky dip prizes for our Early Childhood stalls –  Old Fashioned Lollies, Lucky Dip and Lob-a-Choc. Please pass donations directly to Prep or Redlands House Reception.

In addition, please see dates and times below, for jam and baking sessions at The Barn in Mosman.

Yr 2 Students – Junior School Athletics Carnival

Earlier in the week, Mr Carter emailed information to Yr 2 families advising them of the Junior School Athletics Carnival which will take place on Wednesday 8 August at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre, Homebush. This is an opportunity for all Yr 2 students who turn eight in 2018 to participate. The day itself is a full athletics carnival comprising track and field events including 100m, 200m, 800m races and shot put, discus and turbo javelin as well as long and high jump. Students are able to enter as many or as few events as they choose and there is no pre-registration required. All students receive House points for participating in events and students who place in the top positions are awarded additional points, place ribbons and may be selected to represent Redlands at the HICES Athletics Carnival on 28 August. As this is a Junior School event, parents of Prep students are asked to transport their child to and from the venue and supervise them for the duration of the day. Students should be at the Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay by 8.20am. If you are interested in this opportunity please email the Junior Sports Office and also inform your Yr 2 class teacher via a note in the Student Planner.

Clubs Term 3

Just a reminder that if your family schedule has changed and your child is no longer able to do Clubs in Term 3, please email Miss Oxley so she can allocate any vacant spots to those students on the waiting list. Clubs runs from 3pm to 4pm on Wednesdays and prompt pick up at 4pm from their meeting spot is appreciated.

Parking and Car Line Reminder

For families new to the School, please be aware that there is No Parking outside of the Prep or Junior School buildings between 7.30-9.00am and 2.30-4.00pm. This zone must be kept clear to allow both car lines to operate efficiently. Junior School parents have also been asked to arrive closer to their 3.20pm end of school day or slightly after. Kindergarten car line begins at 2.50pm and siblings, Yrs 1 and 2 at 3.05pm. If you arrive earlier than these times, please do not park in the car line area as this must be kept clear for cars who are coming into the underground collection zone. The orange cones are placed for safety reasons, giving cars a clear view to be able to enter and exit the car park; we would appreciate you not moving these. If you are approached by a staff member, we ask that you please adhere to requests. There will be teachers on duty from 2.45pm daily to assist with the Prep car line process and to keep all members of the community safe.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

We are delighted to invite Special Friends and Grandparents to Redlands on Friday 17 August.

Book Week Dress-Up Day

On Thursday 23 August, the Prep School will be participating in a Dress Up Day as a culminating activity for Book Week. This year’s topic is Find Your Treasure and students are invited to dress up with a pirate theme or any other treasure idea they have in mind. A reminder that students need to be able to use the play equipment and participate in Sports lessons and therefore sandshoes and appropriate clothing is a requirement.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Allergies

This year at Redlands House we have children enrolled who are at risk to anaphylaxis in response to the following foods: egg, tree nuts, sesame seeds – including hummus and tahini.

Redlands requests that all families enrolled support these children by limiting items that contain any of the above ingredients at Preschool.

Jeans for Genes Day

Redlands House will be taking part in Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 3 August. If your child attends Preschool on this day, please join us in supporting this charity by wearing jeans and/or denim to Preschool and bringing a gold coin to place in the boxes on the sign-in table. Jeans for Genes Day raises money to support the Children’s Medical Research Institute to discover treatments and cures for childhood illnesses.

Seniors Transition to School Visit and Sports Day

All Redlands House Seniors and Transition Gold children will be visiting a Kindergarten classroom in the morning on Wednesday 15 August to share in the experience of being in ‘Big School’. Accompanying them will be their classroom teacher and the Kindergarten teachers. They will be exposed to the Kindergarten classroom environment, where they will listen to a story and engage in activities within the room, before returning to Redlands House for Morning Tea. We believe all children will benefit from this experience, even if they will be attending another school next year.

Our annual Sports Day will then be held after Morning Tea on the same day, from 11.15am on the Prep School Oval. This is an exciting time for the children to share their sporting achievements with parents and friends. All parents are very welcome to come along to cheer on your child’s class and see the dedicated PE Department in action, enthusiastically assisted by Yr 6 students. The event should finish at approximately 12.30pm. If you would like to take your child home after this exciting and eventful morning, just remember to let your class teacher know before you leave. The Junior Campus Canteen will be open for parents to enjoy snacks and coffee. We look forward to sharing in a wonderful time with our aspiring future Olympians!

Weekly Results

Head of Sport

This week, students were emailed the Summer Sport registration forms. Preliminary information related to all available Summer Rep Sports and non-Rep Sports can be found on Redlands Pulse. Sport registrations will remain open until Friday 11 August.

Sports choice is a topic parents and students can often have trouble agreeing on. Our own research conducted in April 2018, indicated that the desire “to improve skills” and “to have fun” were the two most influential factors on a student’s sporting choice. The factors with the lowest influence on sports choice are the desire to “compete at a higher representation” and “to win”. This research tells us that the Redlands Sport program must foster a culture of high level engagement and commitment of which students are self-aware of the skills they are developing in fun and enjoyable environments. The critical question students should reflect on when registering for a sport is not what sport they should do, instead they should seek to understand how they will demonstrate commitment to the sport?

The improvement of skills is not isolated to a physical domain, but also the social, emotional and a mental domains of development. The improvement of skills and the elements of enjoyment in a student’s education are vital to the long term goals of developing young people. Developing a student to have integrity, high moral standards and perseverance are outcomes we strive for in a Redlands education. Any sport is a vehicle for this goal. It is the commitment to this goal which makes the difference between success and failure.

Cross Country

Congratulations to Emma Mahon (Yr 9) who ran at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships last Friday. In what was a very tough race, Emma finished in 10th place for the 4k U15 Girls age group. Emma has now been selected in the Athletics NSW U16 Girls team for the 2018 National Cross Country Championships in Queensland on 25 August. We are all wishing her the best of luck.

Football

Girls Football

It was another fantastic weekend of Girls Football. Despite the holiday break, our girls Football teams haven’t missed a beat. Our Junior A team played against Oxley and had an impressive 10-0 win. They continue to add to their undefeated record this season. The Junior B team had a tough match against St Andrew’s top junior team with the 0-2 loss not reflecting how close the game really was and some of the great passages of play our girls displayed. Our 2nd XI Girls played against the Barker 4ths team, and after another great game, they finished with a very convincing 3-0 win. Our 1st XI Girls played against St Andrew’s. Entering half time with the game tied at 1-1, our girls needed to step things up in the second half. They came out firing winning 4-1.

Boys Football

After a long break many of our Boys Football teams travelled to St Pius. The Junior boys tried very hard but the opposition proved too strong and played a very organised style of Football. The Senior boys had a tough day as well. Our 1st XI were outmatched by a very well-drilled St Pius team. The 2nds had a very close game losing 3-2 in the final minutes. Well done to Mr Bowler and his players competing at a high standard each week. Another good result was seen by the 14Bs, coached by Michael Warrell, the boys drew 0-0 and will continue to chase a position in the semis. The 13Bs lost 1-0 in a very close game, and the 15A boys have improved out of sight, putting up a great fight against St Pius. Our teams have shown improvement through the season and we encourage all our Football players to keep working hard at training and developing their own skill set and knowledge of the game as we head into the last two rounds.

Best of luck to our girls travelling to Central Coast this weekend, and our boys playing at home. “Attitude + Effort= Reward”

ISA

To see the ISA standings as we head into the final two rounds of the regular season, please visit the ISA website.

Save the Date

Please save the date for the End of Season Football Presentation, held on Friday 14 September at Dee Why RSL Club. More details will be released shortly.

Hockey

The 1sts team had an awesome 6-1 win at the weekend over Barker. Whilst the first half was a close 1-1 draw and brushing the winter break out the way, the second half was lovely Hockey to watch and all goals came from good team work and passing between everyone. This win puts the girls on top of the table going into the final two round games.

The 2nds played against Oxley at Barker College. The girls played a fantastic game scoring five goals from four different girls. It was a brilliant effort by all. Special mention to Iris, Aaliya, Kate and Freya, who shared the goals scored by the team. This commanding win should cement the girls into 2nd place on the ladder with two games to go.

The 3rds game against Oxley was extremely close, ending in a 0-0 draw. The first half was tough on our defenders, however we improved in the second half, holding most of the possession of the ball. Our attacking line worked really hard, with Lucy and Jessie both playing excellent games.

This weekend will see the 1sts head to Oxley while the 2nds and 3rds both play against SACS at Barker College. All game details can be found in Redlands Rhino.

Netball

Save the date for the 2018 Netball Presentation Dinner on Thursday 13 September at the Norths Leagues Club. The evening is to celebrate the 2018 Netball season for both the ISA and NSNA competitions. The trybooking link will be emailed shortly with more information.

A huge thank you to all those parents who assisted with the NSNA Duty Round last weekend!

We had some mixed results over the weekend with two of the three Yr 7 NSNA teams having byes. Our NSNA 7 Gold team took on a strong North Sydney Girls High team. The girls have shown great improvement throughout the season and came away with a hard fought 22-13 win. This has set them up well for the last few weeks of the season, now sitting in 2nd place leading into the last few weeks of the regular season.

There will be a Friends of Netball meeting on Thursday 9 August. For more information please contact Mr Cameron Ellis.

Rugby

Our youngest side managed to put together their best game of the season over the weekend, coming out on top against a much larger opposition on their home pitch. The efforts seen from the side lines was incredible, with our Redlands boys aiming up in defence with some wonderful hits, whilst our attack was fluid and direct with some lovely individual efforts for our players.

The game started with a wonderful try from Hugh Sellar, who cut through the midfield defence of Oxley and ran the length of the field to score the first points of the match. Off the next restart, the much larger pack of Oxley started to run over the Redlands players with one of their players in particular running through the heart of our backline to score a try against the run of play. From there the game turned into an arm wrestle, with Oxley the stronger of the teams in size and strength but Redlands being the quicker more structured of the teams. There were some wonderful moments, Jackson Doyle making massive carries into the Oxley forwards, Chase Vandekreeke playing his best game of the season as he tackled anything that moved and making some brilliant runs. But ultimately it came down to one moment, with the score at 15-14 to Oxley, Jack Baker snaked through the defence, beating the fullback and sprinting away to the try line. With one to beat he dived to the corner, scoring an amazing try to bring us back in front. What followed was a tense two minutes as Oxley looked to score the winner, however with seconds on the clock, Oxley’s biggest forward came running down the side line only to be sent out by a huge hit from Hugh and Chase, game won Redlands. Brilliant effort from the whole team, well done.

Summer Sport Choices

Students have been emailed the link for their Summer sport choices. All students have until Sunday 12 August to complete their 2018/19 Summer Sport registration.

Tennis

Redlands has returned from the holidays with some impressive victories on the weekend. Team 1 had a dominant victory over Central Coast Grammar School, winning 5-3. Team 2 managed to keep a clean sheet against Central Coast Grammar 8-0. Team 3 produced some excellent tennis to defeat Barker 7-1. Team 4 maintained their winning record against Chevalier with an 8-0 win.

Weightlifting

Best of luck to Sean Russell (Yr 12), who will be in Melbourne this weekend competing in the National Powerlifting Championships. Sean will be competing in the 74kg weight class. Good luck Sean!

Waterpolo

Our Yr 7 boys and girls got off to a great start on Friday night in what, for some of them, was their first ever Waterpolo game. A little nervous to start, the boys started the first game against St Augustine’s White and unfortunately were no match for the Augies boys, going down 2-11, however you couldn’t wipe the smile off the boys’ faces at the end of the match. In true style they all stayed around to play the 2nd game against the St Augustine’s Green. This was a little closer, however the boys unfortunately went down 4-7. With lots of improvement still to come, the boys look like they are very eager for Waterpolo this year.

Our girls come up against a very strong Brigidine team, fighting throughout the game, and showed some great skills with a number of the girls having never played before. A big thank you to Sienna Kerr (Yr 11) and Maddy Hampton-Vickers (Yr 10) who helped coach the Yr 7 girls on Friday night.

If you are a Yr 7 girl and you are thinking about giving Waterpolo a try, please let Mr Ellis in the Sports Department know.

Junior Sport

IPSHA Sports

IPSHA Sport recommences this weekend and we have a few minor alterations for game times and venues:
4 Blue and Red are now both playing on Northern Oval at Macquarie University playing Fields at 11am.

Just a reminder for all of our players and parents – it’s essential that our coaches have the full playing complement ready and available to play at least 20 minutes prior to scheduled match time. A good warm up is essential for all athletes regardless of age or grade. I understand that with early starts and Saturday morning travel it can be difficult, but it’s not really giving our teams a chance to perform to their best if the warm up is spasmodic or incomplete for the whole team.

NSNA Netball

I was excited to see more smiles than ever before at our Redlands Netball matches last Friday night, despite chilly weather and results that weren’t all in our favour, the camaraderie and fun amongst the players were a highlight and a great reminder to me that we can’t always measure how successful our Sports programs are based on win/loss records. Redlands 10 were the main culprits, clearly enjoying the chance to play together and having a blast – despite going down in a tough match.

Football

Our Yr 6 footballers are consolidating as a squad and last week had three great wins in the local derby against Mosman Prep. 6C, despite starting the game light on numbers, battled hard and won 2-0. The 6B and 6A teams also got away with close fought wins. School Captain, Conor Petersen, returned from injury last term and really found his feet this week, netting goals in both C and B matches.

AFL

Our AFL boys carried through their improving form with a last gasp win over Trinity at Marrickville last week. As always, Isaac Brooks led the way, Owen Conder played well returning from injury and Lachlan Carmichael showed he’s got a bright footballing future with another great performance

Rugby

Travel suits our Rugby XV who fared well after the bus trip to the Central Coast last week. Despite missing some key players, our forward pack led the way going down three tries to one in a spirited effort. The lads take on another road trip and another tough school this weekend bus leaving for Tudor House at 7.15am

Hannah Morton – School Sports Australia Champion

Anyone who saw Hannah swim at our Carnival early in Term 1 would not have been mistaken for believing they had watched an elite level performance. Hannah has rewritten Redlands Junior School Swimming records and has continued that form through HICES, NSWCIS, NSWPSSA and now School Sports Australia Championships. Competing for NSW Primary Schools, Hannah again blitzed the field taking gold medals in 50m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke, she took silver in 100m Freestyle and won Gold with teammates in a range of relay events. That makes Hannah Morton an Australian Champion in five events. Through heats, Semi Finals and Finals, Hannah broke her own NSW 50m Backstroke record on three separate occasions. It might never happen, but I hope to see another swimmer of Hannah’s quality in the Redlands cap again.

Term 4 Sports Selections

Thanks to everyone who has entered their Term 4 Sport selections. Summer Sports commence in Week 8 of this term  (Wednesday 12 September) and so we’re keen to lock away quality coaches and facilities. We really appreciate your help in securing your selections early. Trybooking for Junior School Summer Sport Term 4 selections will close Friday 3 August at 5pm.

Athletics Carnival

The Junior School Athletics Carnival is approaching fast and will be held on Wednesday 8 August at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. Students across Yrs 2-6 are steadily working on developing their techniques across the range of track and field events during PE classes in the lead up to the Carnival.

The below program will give an idea of event timing for the day. Please use the timing as a guide only – if everything goes well – all of our track events run faster (like the kids) and our throwing events will run longer – (more kids throwing it further!).
