Foundation

A very warm welcome to all Redlands families for Term 3. I hope you had a wonderful holiday and you managed to spend precious time with your families and friends.

Thank You For Your Support

Thank you sincerely to those members of the Redlands community who have joined us in our efforts to raise funds for the means-tested Scholarship, Building and Library Funds. All these initiatives not only benefit current students but students in generations to come.

This year’s objective is to raise enough funds to start another means-tested scholarship. With your support we are currently at 32% of this target.

There has been a terrific progress made on the New Learning Hub over the holidays. For an update, please see the Principal’s section of Note Day.

Students are Leading the Way – Yr 12 Legacy Gift

To welcome in the new term, Yr 12 students participated in the Beard Growing / Crazy Hair competition. Mr Sean Cochran and boys grew their facial hair over the three week break, whilst girls came to school with crazy hair. Thank you to all students who participated and donated towards this initiative. Over $440 was raised, a great kick-start to the 2019 Legacy Gift contribution towards the means tested Scholarship Fund.

The next Legacy Gift fundraising event is the Yr 7 Movie Night on Friday 16 August. More information to come!

From the Principal

Welcome back to all families for the start of Term 3, and a very special welcome to the new families who have joined our learning community from the USA, UK and Singapore, as well as other local schools. We also welcome back Head of Junior School Mr Ari Guha from his long service leave, and I sincerely thank Mrs Audrey Fellowes for taking on the position as Acting Head of the Junior Campus during his absence from school.

On Monday the first Redlands Teacher Led Conference was held. Usually we host one or two keynote speakers, but this time our Head of Secondary School, Sean Corcoran, delivered an introduction to the day. He explained that the theme of the day was “Recipes for Success” and that 70 of our “Master Chef” teachers had volunteered to present, all in all, 33 different “dishes” which they would share with their colleagues. These dishes were served in three courses, each of 45 minutes. Other teachers could attend 3 of these sessions to “taste and try”. After lunch all teachers met in their Year Groups or Faculties to report on what their “meal” had offered and how they might see opportunities to “bake up” that “recipe” in a form that they would like to try in their own classrooms. It was a day that inspired all and recognised that we have an increasing number of “Master” Teachers within our own staff at Redlands. Some years ago Sir Ken Robinson (google him) spoke of how education needs to move from an industrial model to an organic model. At Redlands we have a rich mixture of top-down and bottom-up leadership, with teachers who tend a rich soil from which our students can grow as they learn.

During the vacation period a group of Year 11 students, accompanied by Mr Jon Gray and Ms Amy Richardson, undertook a Service learning trip to Peru where they trekked, explored and worked on a service project on Ticonata Island. Not only have they returned with new skills and wonderful stories and memories, they have also developed an awareness of the unique culture of the local community’s traditional way of life.

145 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 represented Redlands at both the Redlands Cup and Sydney Interschool Championships in Thredbo, achieving the following results:

Sydney Interschools:

34 podium finishes, 20 team and 14 individual – 17 Gold, 8 Silver, 9 Bronze

1st in Secondary Coed Overall, Coed Skiing, Coed Snowboard

1st in Primary Coed Overall, Coed Skiing, Coed Snowboard

Redlands Cup:

29 podium finishes, 19 team and 10 individual – 10 Gold, 5 Silver, 14 Bronze

I make special note of Tasman Forest, who won both the Division 1 Boys Snowboard and Snowboard Cross events at the Sydney Interschools and was awarded the Redlands Cup for Boys Snowboard!

I wish the 72 individuals and 42 teams who have qualified for the NSW Interschools all the very best as they take to the slopes at Perisher at the end of August.

This year’s Redlands Cup had a record 630 competitors from 52 schools and I thank Coordinator of Snowsports Mr Bruce Campbell, the Sports department and other staff and parents for their efforts in staging such a successful Snowsports event.

Construction of the New Learning Hub powered ahead during the holiday break with the completion of the Level 2 concrete pour; and the Level 3 concrete pour commenced today. The image below provides a visual of how the New Learning Hub construction is progressing. Our two main campuses were abuzz with activity over the past three weeks, with our dedicated Facilities and ICT teams completing over 50 major tasks ranging from extensive lighting replacements to ICT audits and polishing of the school buses.

Updated Communications Look and Feel

As a result of the brand research that was undertaken in 2017 and updated communications positioning in 2018, we have developed a new look and feel for our communications which is being progressively rolled out over the next six months. It will be launched in the Sydney Morning Herald’s Independent Schools education feature this weekend, both in print and online.

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope the mid-year break was refreshing for students and that they are rejuvenated for the second half of the year. On Monday we had an excellent teacher led conference to start the term for staff, where teachers from across both campuses shared their “Recipes for Success” from their classrooms. It was an invigorating and stimulating way to kick off Semester 2 as we, the teachers, got to be the students in each other’s classrooms. However, it was also wonderful to see and hear the actual students return to school on Tuesday, bringing their energy back to the Campus. Finally, I hope parents found my regular holiday letter from last Friday a useful summation and update of various school matters as we have another busy and exciting term ahead.

During our opening assembly I shared some of my reflections on the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo lunar landing and some messages to students for the term ahead. An excerpt of this address is below.

“Now, probably like many of you, over the past week I have been enthralled by stories and recollections of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo lunar landing when, on July 20 1969, humankind first set foot on the moon. Despite what the growing patch of grey in my beard might indicate, I was not around then, but over the years I have spoken to numerous friends and family members who were.

What strikes me most about their recollections of that lunar landing was the universal sense of awe and wonder, where people around the world held their collective breath, to witness this extraordinary achievement. As the American President Richard Nixon said to the astronauts at the time, “For one priceless moment, all the people of the world are truly one.”

A half-century later, I worry that we seem to have lost some of that sense of awe and wonder of the world and universe surrounding us. That we have become complacent with the vast amount of knowledge at our fingertips and that instead of our horizons extending thousands and millions of kilometres to the furthest reaches of outer space, our horizons often abruptly end at a screen a few inches from our face.

Albert Einstein once said, The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.

So, I encourage each of you over this coming term, to open your eyes to those things in life which cause you pause to wonder and to stand rapt in awe. Maybe it’s trying to comprehend the vastness of our universe. Maybe it’s being moved hearing a piece of music. Or maybe it’s pausing to see the beauty of a sunset.

By reminding ourselves in this way that there are things far bigger and far greater than us, then maybe we can feel some of that awe and wonder that millions and millions of people around the word collectively felt 50 years ago this week.”

Parent Presentation: Technology Addiction and Sleep

Wednesday 14 August

Good sleep is crucial to health and wellbeing. The use of digital devices, especially before bedtime, can have a major impact on sleep quality. Child psychiatrist Dr Philip Tam and sleep expert Lisa Maltman will discuss how to help your child create good sleep habits and avoid the pitfalls of too much technology. Dr Philip Tam is an award-winning child psychiatrist, researcher and pioneer in internet-related psychological disorders and video-game addictions. He will examine how to address these often-challenging problems in young people. Lisa Maltman is the founder of The Sleep Connection, established to meet the growing need to educate students, teachers and parents in schools on the importance of sleep health, and works closely with the Woolcock Medical Institute in Sydney, a body world-renowned in the area of sleep research. We are pleased to have Dr Philip Tam and Lisa Maltman present on these important topics on Wednesday 14 August from 6.00 pm – 7.30pm in Redlands Hall. All Secondary School parents are invited to attend. No RSVP is necessary.

Legacy Gift Fundraiser

On Tuesday a number of our Yr 12 boys returned to school with beards (or valiant attempts at beards) and some of our girls had crazy hair for the day. No, they were not breaking the School’s uniform rules, but instead were raising money for their Legacy Gift which is a contribution to the School’s means-tested Scholarship Fund, in honour of Dr Peter Lennox in his retirement. This will be one of a number of fundraisers by the Class of 2019 this term for their Legacy Gift and we thank the students who made donations on the day. Fortunately, all hair was back to normal and beards were shaved off by Wednesday (including yours truly).

Lost Property

Please note that the Secondary School Lost Property area has moved to the old Sports Office in the eastern end of Lang Gym. All lost property will be moved to this area daily and this space will be open every lunchtime for students to retrieve any of their lost property.

Staffing Updates

This term we welcome back Mr Christopher Allen and Ms Giulia Laurenzi from their respective long service leave and maternity leave as Co-Subject Coordinators of HSIE. We also welcome back Ms Lara Luitingh from her maternity leave. Ms Luitingh will return as a part time Counsellor to assist Ms Tanya Fullerton as part of our Counselling team.

Shakespeare Festival

While most students started their mid-year break on the first weekend of the holidays, a number of our Yr 11 IB Theatre students competed in the State Finals of the Shakespeare Competition at the Seymour Centre. I would like to congratulate Greta Feldmann, Aleisha Lawrence, Apsara Lindeman and Domenica Stuart who finished 3rd in this prestigious competition, which is an outstanding achievement.

Term 4 Departure Notice: Final Reminder

This is a final reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School during or at the end of Term 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by this Saturday 27 July. As per our Conditions of Enrolment emailed to all families in December last year with the 2019 Schedule of Fees, there will be fees in lieu payable for any notices of departure received after this date.

Chaplain

The anniversary of the landing on the Moon has been an interesting reminder of the human desire to understand, explore and push the limits. The awe of looking at the star-studded sky fosters a sense of wonder and mystery with a curiosity to explore. Poets have captured this awe in their poetry for generations like the Psalmist David:

‘When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,

what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?’ Psalm 8:3-4

A sense of wonder and realisation that there is more than just me in the universe is a valuable perspective in life. It grows gratitude, humility and a broader view in life, just as the pictures from the Moon showed us a perspective of the world that reminded us that we were one planet rather than a collection of countries.

At Redlands we want to foster this sort of perspective, one that reaches for mystery, that delights in complexity of our universe and seeks to look at the spiritual questions. Students are encouraged to ponder questions about who they are in the universe, the nature of God, the grandeur of creation and the nature of being human.

As the Psalmist looks at the sky, his sense of wonder has caused him to realise with gratitude, the awesome transcendent nature of God and yet he loves humanity. Later that same God humbled himself to become human and in love offered his life to restore humanity to a relationship with him. This is the mystery and joy of the gospel, that we can connect to the transcendent and find our true purpose and place in a vast universe.

May your life be full of this awe.

Blessings

Debating

I hope you have had a wonderful break and have come back refreshed. The SDN competition begins this Friday. Please note that all students are required to be at all debates. Redlands will be hosting the Grand Finals and all SDN students will have to perform hosting duties on the night, even if they are not debating.

Debating times have changed slightly from last year but this mainly affects the Primary teams. On weeks when we have away games, we will be departing earlier than usual (3.35pm). Students will have received emails last term about which SDN team they are in. Please let your parents know these details.

Round 1 Redlands v Wenona is a Home debate. Students will need to meet the teachers at 3.30pm in the Liggins Quad to sign in and set up the classrooms. Please don’t forget to sign out at the end of the evening.

A Night to Delight

Service and Social Engagement

Redlands School Sleep Out

A very big thank you to the parents and students of Yr 10 for their generosity towards the organisations we have supported this year through participation in the Redlands Sleep Out.

Hopefully students had a fun night to finish off Term 2 and most importantly had a chance to broaden their awareness of the social issues associated with members of our community living at risk or experiencing the isolation and vulnerability of homelessness. There were so many examples of students thoughtfully engaging with the stories shared by Taldumande, Orange Sky and the Salvation Army (Oasis).

The very impressive final tally:

  • Over 300 pairs of warm socks for the Matthew Talbot Hostel run by St Vincent de Paul in Woolloomooloo
  • $4043.29 donated to Orange Sky Laundry, far exceeding our target
  • $3862.49 donated to Taldumande, again, well exceeding our target
  • $1399.20 donated to Oasis – Salvation Army.

Thank you also must go to the dedicated staff who gave up their time at the end of a very busy term to sleep rough for the night so that students could have this valuable experience. Their dedicated Year Advisors, Sarah Matthews and Nick Walker, were so impressed with the conduct of students. Ms Lihou, Mr Atkins, Mr Auzins, Mr Hemopo and Ms Allen also braved the conditions on the night and their Tutors ran the workshops on the following morning.

Jeans for Genes Day Friday 2 August

On Friday of Week 2, students and staff are encouraged to wear denim for the day and support the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Jeans for Genes is an opportunity to teach students about science and compassion for others. The $2 donation for participation will help scientists cure genetic diseases and other serious conditions affecting 1 in 20 children in Australia – that’s nearly one child in every classroom.

The Peru Expeditioners Return

Our team of 11 Yr 11 students, along with Mr Gray and Ms Richardson, have safely returned from their expedition to Peru. After careful planning and organisation over the course of this year, meeting regularly to develop their itinerary, plan their fundraising and prepare for each leg of the trip, students and teachers have returned with wonderful stories and valuable memories. The project work they completed on a small island in Lake Titicaca saw them make a meaningful contribution to developing accommodation that will enable the local community to sustainably continue their traditional way of life. Working alongside this community, students have developed an awareness of a unique culture while learning new skills and applying some of their academic studies to the experiences they had at every stage of the expedition.

Year 12

Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3, the final term of Yr 12’s Secondary schooling. I hope that everyone was able to take time to regenerate and relax over this recent term break. Term 3 is very busy with both the trial examinations and the graduation cermonies. We would like to remind them of the importance of staying organised and prepared for classes, important dates and events. Students in Design and Technology, Drama, Music, Dance and Visual Arts might be more stressed than some others this term as they are required to complete their major works, which are all due this term. Students are encouraged to seek help from their teachers, Tutors and Year Advisors if they experience any challenges. We also wish all students the very best for their HSC and IB Trial examinations.

Yr 12 Welcome Back Morning Tea

On the last day of Term 2, students and staff attended the Yr 12 Formal. As I am sure that you will all agree, it was a fabulous night. Everyone looked stunning and enjoyed a great time with their friends. Venue and security staff spoke very highly of our students, commending them as one of the most well-behaved Year Groups they have worked with. In recognition for the success of this memorable event, Mr Corcoran organised a morning tea for all Yr 12s on the first day back of term. His kind gesture served as a great means to boost student morale and will definitely help them reach the finishing line with strong motivation and efforts.

Legacy Gift

Yr 12 continued their fundraising work for their Legacy Gift throughout the holidays. A big thank you to all the students who volunteered to participate in the ‘best beard and big hair competition”, which helped to raise more than $400. Well done! We would also like to thank Mr Corcoran for growing an impressive beard to support this initiative.

Yr 12 HSC English Workshop

Thank you to Dr Regis for leading an English workshop during Tutor Time today in the Library. The session focused on the Yr 12 Common Module, Texts and Human Experiences. Her rich teaching/marking experiences and good sense humour were appreciated by all the attending students. The workshop will continue on next Thursday.

Welcome Back

A very warm welcome back! I hope that all Yr 11 students (and parents) were able to get some well needed down time. We have an exciting but busy Term 3 ahead of us with Prefect and Captain of Activities voting commencing this week.

Pastoral Care

Term 3 will have a big emphasis on sleep and how important it is for learning. We will focus on Professor Matthew Walker who is the Director at the Centre for Human Sleep Science.

Dr Walker earned his degree in Neuroscience from Nottingham University, UK, and his PhD in Neurophysiology from the Medical Research Council, London UK. He subsequently became a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, USA. Currently, he is Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. He is also the Founder and Director of the Centre for Human Sleep Science. Dr Walker’s research examines the impact of sleep on human health and disease.

Camp Forms

We ask that any Camp forms that haven’t been completed and returned to be done so soon please.

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back for what is sure to be an exciting and jam-packed Term 3. I do hope that students and families enjoyed the winter break and are feeling refreshed and re-energised. The School was a buzz on Tuesday morning with stories of holiday travels and experiences. It was delightful to see our students so animated and ready to continue their Yr 10 studies. We would like to welcome Anna Feller who has joined our Yr 10 cohort. In addition, we would like to welcome back returning students Pearl Brasler and Jasmine Lazzarotto (Jnr School). I am sure Anna, Pearl and Jasmine will transition quickly and I know that our community will make these students and their families feel very welcome.

Term 2 Wrap Up

The Yr 10 Winter Sleepout was a wonderful event and our students proved that they are growing into mature and empathetic young people. During the evening, we were lucky to hear speakers from Taldumande and Orange Sky Laundry. Listening to these speakers allowed students to gain a deep understanding of the importance of these charities for the homeless in our community. I would like to thank families for their generous donations to Taldumande, Matthew Talbot and Orange Sky Laundry and for supporting our initiative to give students a comparable sleep out experience so that the idea of homelessness was not so abstract for our students. I would like to thank Ms Kria Coleman for her extensive organisation of this key event. In addition, sincere thanks must go to Mr Nick Walker, Mr Brad Hemopo, Ms Anna Alan, Mr Eddy Atkins, Mr Simon Colyer and Mr Janis Auzins who gave of their time and slept out with us overnight.

Visual Arts Elective Students and All Yr 10 Students With An Interest In Visual Arts

Visual Arts Extra Subjects run every school day (excluding Thursday) and are a great way to develop and expand artmaking skills and understanding. Extra Subject classes employ a studio approach to artmaking with students studying under the guidance of skilled media specific artists. A studio approach to extra subject classes ensures individual guidance whilst allowing for extensive and rigorous engagement with media.

Extra Subjects classes are open to all students not only Visual Arts students.

Extra Subjects offered through Visual Arts include: Monday – Ceramics – Wheel throwing and Hand building; Tuesday – Painting; Wednesday – Life Drawing; Friday – Experimental Photography.

For information or to enrol please email mharpley@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Leadership Opportunities

A number of our Yr 10 students engaged in leadership programs over the Winter break: Max Currie and Piper Allen attended the Burn Bright National Leadership Camp; Beatrix Blasco, Ela Yohannan and Guy Salter attended the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington and New York. We look forward to learning more about these students’ experiences when they talk to the Year Group at our next assembly.

Overseas School Trips 2020

Next year, students in Yr 11 will have the opportunity to attend two international trips, Cambodia (approximately 10 days) at the start of the 2020 December holidays and Costa Rica (approximately 21 days) in the 2020 July holidays.

The Cambodia Service trip has a fixed itinerary and is largely Service based. The majority of time is spent completing community work and visiting M’Lop Tapang, an organisation founded in 2003 by a Redlander. Students also have the opportunity to visit several significant sites throughout Cambodia. For more information click here.

The Costa Rica expedition is a student led three week trip where students collaboratively determine their own itinerary, accommodation, Service activity and trek. Students will have the opportunity to get involved with a range of conservation and eco-tourism initiatives, eg. working at a Turtle Conservation Project. This trip aims to develop resilience, leadership skills and mindfulness through responsible travel, with the ultimate aim to create informed global citizens.

If you are interested in learning more about both of these opportunities, an information evening will be held on Tuesday 6 August at 6.15pm in Redlands Hall. There will also be a more comprehensive information evening for Cambodia at the beginning of 2020. For more information please contact  Mr Simon Colyer.

Year 9

Welcome back to Semester 2, Term 3! I hope you all had a restful time over the school holidays and were able to spend some quality moments with your family. We would like to warmly welcome Scarlett Wadham who joins us in Yr 9. We would also like to welcome back Alex Ridler who returns to Redlands this week, and Janne Stiefel who is with us for two terms. Term 3 is a busy one and is ten weeks long, finishing on Friday 27 September. In the next school holidays, several Yr 9 students are going on the Service Learning trip to Fiji, organised by Tony Dong, and which I am fortunate enough to also be attending. In addition, many Yr 9 students will be leaving for Winter School this weekend and will be spending the term at the snow, so we wish them a happy and safe time. I am hoping to pop down for a few days to spend some time with them in the classroom and on the slopes at some point.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

As I am slowly grappling with raising two teenage boys and dealing with the stress of one sitting his HSC this year and the other daily turning from a boy into a man, I decided to do a bit of research into how to raise a teenage boy. In my search I found this article on “Things no-one tells you about parenting a teenage boy”, and realised, once again, that having children should come with an instruction manual! As I read this article, I must confess to be guilty of making, and continuing to make, many mistakes while attempting to raise my boys in what I think is the best possible way. “Don’t expect instant compliance” and “your way will not always be the best way” are two pieces of advice that at times I may be guilty of ignoring! I hope you enjoy the read.

Snowsports Redlands Cup

During the last week of the school holidays, a number of talented Yr 9 students participated in Thredbo for Race Week. A full set of results will be posted on Redlands Pulse Note Day with the following Yr 9 students involved in the week:

Ben Harrington, Zac Corneil and Alex Bush – Snowboard Division 2 Male
Callie Forest, Tess Callaghan and Mia Kloiser-Jones – Snowboard Division 2 Female
Katina Casimaty, Dasha Sychova and Sophie Kennedy – Alpine Division 2 Female
Billy Thomas, Ben Harrington and Harrison Fung – Alpine Division 2 Male

Haircuts

There are a large number of boys who need haircuts urgently. They have all been spoken to by Mr Dong and given a date in which to get this done by. It would be most appreciated if you could check with your son and assist us in ensuring this is done. Boys going to Winter School whose hair is currently too long have been asked to get a haircut before the end of the week as there will be little or no opportunity for them to do so while at the snow.

I hope you have a wonderful week.

Term 3 Pastoral Care Program

Emotional awareness and self-regulation are essential skills in building resilience. It is the ability to identify emotional experiences and to control emotional responses to external events. To be resilient also requires
flexible and accurate thinking, seeing different perspectives. Someone who is resilient can come up with a variety of reasons for being successful in something. Flexible and accurate thinking allows multiple solutions to a problem, having Plan B and C is vital to resilience. By the end of Term 3, students should be able to:

  • bounce back from adversity
  • develop flexible thinking
  • understand there are multiple solutions to a problem

Study Skills Tip

It Doesn’t Always Have to be Perfect

It’s not possible to do everything perfectly all of the time. Students should consider whether or not their time is better spent perfecting something that is already pretty good or working on something they’re struggling with or need to improve.

Term 3 Pastoral Care: Overcoming Setbacks and Working through Challenges

This term, our Pastoral program focuses on self-reflection for behaviour management utilising the flowchart: What happened? – What did you think about it? – How did you feel about it?- How did you behave?  We will continue to touch on Digital Citizenship, summarising notes and study skills with help from Pru Salter’s Study Skills website (see below) and we will begin to focus specifically on the first three habits from 7 Habits of  Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey.  This week included:

Pru Salter’s Study Tips for July
Top Tips for Overcommitted Students

Maybe you are an elite athlete? Or a dedicated performer? Or someone who has many talents across lots of different areas and doesn’t want to give up any of your activities? No matter the reason, the bottom line is you are time poor. You struggle to fit in everything you need to do for school, because of all of the other commitments in your life. The bad news is there is no magic solution that will easily fix this issue for you. You cannot create more time. The good news is that there are things you can do to make more efficient use of the time you have.

These tips are an abbreviated version of the handout available on www.studyskillshandbook.com.au – just visit the Things To Print page to see the full version.

  1. Don’t waste time in any of your classes at school. Make the most of every moment so you have less to do at home and set up a buddy system in case you miss any lessons.
  2. Prune your activities and see if there is anything you can cut to reduce the pressure.
  3. Make a timetable so you can schedule in everything that you need to do and want to do.
  4. Use all little pockets of time. If you are waiting before training then use that time to complete some homework.
  5. Always prioritise before you start work to ensure that the most important and urgent work is completed first.
  6. If you are too tired when you get home from training it may be better to get to bed early and get up a bit earlier in the morning when you are fresh and do your work then.
  7. You may need to sacrifice an occasional lunchtime when you know you will be too busy that night.
  8. Let go of perfectionism it may not be possible to do everything as fully as you would like. Take smart shortcuts when you can.
  9. Use any big blocks of time to tackle the time-consuming tasks that you haven’t had time for.
  10. Some work like study notes, assessments or major works may be able to be left to the holidays.

Remember to be kind to yourself. It is difficult to have enough time to excel in every aspect of your life. All you can do is make good choices with the time you have and make the most of that time and still try and get the best results you can, given the time constraints you are working under.

Head of Junior School

Welcome Back

A very warm welcome to you all as we start Term 3 and it has been a joy for me to reconnect with students and colleagues after my long service leave break during the second half of Term 2. The extended time with my family was everything we had hoped for and I am grateful to Dr Lennox for affording me this opportunity. I am also very grateful to Head of Preparatory School, Mrs Fellowes, for covering my role alongside her own role during my absence, ably supported by our three Junior Campus Deans, Mrs Kourakis, Mr Coutts and Ms Atkins.

There was the usual energetic buzz of excitement amongst students on the first day of term and this was mirrored by returning staff on Monday, where our day of professional learning involved 70 Redlands teachers from P-12 leading workshops for colleagues where expertise and teaching ideas were shared and celebrated. Kickstarted with a staff Wellbeing fair, the day was an energising and learner-focused way for staff to start the term and I am grateful to the many Junior School teachers involved in leading sessions, as well as colleagues from all sections of our School.

This term, we also welcome nine new students and their families to Redlands and I hope that your time here provides many happy memories and experiences.

Online Safety Talk

As part of our cyclical program of student online safety education, we are looking forward to welcoming Brett Lee (not the cricketer!) from Internet Safe Education back to Redlands next week to run sessions with Yrs 5 and 6. With 22 years’ experience in the Australian Police, 16 of those as a detective, Brett’s real-life experience in this field as well as time he spent in the US working with the FBI on aspects of internet security, safety and crime will help the students understand how to stay safe on the internet as well as the importance of being a responsible user of technology. I will share some of his presentation with parents in Note Day next week for your reference and our Junior School Arnold Library also has five copies of Mr Lee’s book, Screen Resolution, should parents wish to borrow a copy from our parent reference section.

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner’s iParent section is another treasure-trove of information, which I would highly recommend parents to spend some time exploring as we continue to learn and work together to support and guide our students to make positive choices to harness the power of technology, something that is and will continue to be an integral part of their lives, both now and in the future.

Junior Music Festival

Next Thursday 1 August, all students in the Junior School will be performing at the Junior Music Festival which will be held in Robert Dunnet Hall from 4.30pm. On the day, students will remain at school for afternoon tea and the concert, which commences at 4.30pm and is expected to finish at approximately 6.00pm. All students will need to bring afternoon tea and a water bottle. Students involved in the performance will be in designated holding rooms and will be supervised by Redlands staff. At the conclusion of the concert, they will be dismissed from their classrooms. Please note that before school, after school and lunchtime Cocurricular Music ensemble rehearsals will be cancelled in Week 2. Please contact the Junior Music Office directly should you have  any further enquiries.

Jeans for Genes Day Friday 2 August

Next Friday sees a Redlands Mufti Day in support of the Jeans for Genes Day. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation and encouraged to wear denim. SRC leaders in each class will collect and count monies donated and this will also combine with the collection in the Prep and Secondary sections of our School.

Updated Junior School Calendar

An updated Semester 2 Junior School Calendar has been emailed to parents and also uploaded to Redlands Pulse.

Semester 2 Clubs (Terms 3 and 4)

A reminder that Semester 2 Clubs will commence next Tuesday 30 July.  If you had booked for a Club for your child and they are now unable to attend for any reason, could you please contact Sharon Fairfax so that we can offer that spot to another student.

The Choices We Make

In our first assembly on Tuesday, I spoke to the students about the choices that we all have to make in different contexts and to think about those crossroads that come up, both in and out of school, and the need to make wise choices. This is something that I will refer to periodically over the Semester with students and there may be opportunities for you, as parents, to do likewise?

I also connected this topic to the School’s latest Student Discipline Policy which Dr Lennox shared with parents at the end of last term as well as our Responsible ICT User Guidelines, reminding students of our expectations of them. Simultaneously, I also shared our hope that all students have an enjoyable second semester and to have no regrets when the end of the school year arrives in December.

Communication Between School and Home

As I have mentioned before, a positive partnership between School and home is very important in supporting the best educational outcomes for students at Redlands. Therefore, timely, effective and constructive communication between School and home is important in building this partnership.

Our staff value communication from parents and will always seek to respond to emails within two working days but are not expected to answer emails after school hours or on weekends. Primary teachers, in particular, are rarely on emails during the school day so if you need to get an important message to your child during the day, please contact the School Office on 9953 6022 or via email at sfairfax@redlands.nsw.edu.au and cc the class teacher.

Please also be reminded that parents should never contact their child via mobile technology during the day, a message that has also been reiterated to students. Whilst some students have mobile phones as they travel independently to and from school, these are not accessible to students during the school day. Similarly, if they have an iPad as a learning resource, it is solely for this purpose and not as a tool for communication.

Acknowledging that the tone of emails can sometimes be misinterpreted, the final point I wish to make is that as stated in our Conditions of Enrolment, all communication “should be conducted in a courteous and respectful manner”. Communication that comes across as threatening or confrontational to the recipient is not conducive in supporting our partnership and I ask parents to consider this carefully, where appropriate.

Snowsports Success

It has been another successful start to the snow season and over the break many Junior School students and families were involved in Family Week at our High Country Campus, the Redlands Cup, the Sydney Interschools Championships, or a combination of all three!

In talking to students and teachers present in the last couple of days, they had a wonderful time at the snow and we were thrilled to hear of the Junior School students’ success at the Sydney Interschools Championships, which Mr Carter and Mr Campbell were able to acknowledge in our first assembly back. Congratulations to our primary team, including Prep students too, who were crowned with the following accolades:

  • 1st Primary Coed Overall Champions
  • 1st Primary Coed Alpine Skiing Champions
  • 1st Primary Coed Snowboarding Champions

Congratulations to all of the students involved, a large number of whom who will now progress to the State Championships.

Thank you and well done to all of our students, teachers and parent helpers who combined together to make this another wonderful start to the snow season for Redlands.

Yr 4 Virtual Excursion

In Yr 4 this week some classes were introduced to their Unit of Inquiry topic on Cultures. To kickstart the unit the students were taken on a ‘virtual’ excursion using our virtual reality headsets, Class VR. Through this medium, the Yr 4 students were able to see the pyramids in Giza, visit the Eiffel Tower at night, were transported to the hustle and bustle of Times Square New York before finishing off with a scenic went for a canal ride in Amsterdam.

Students were then posed questions that required them to compare and contrast the different between Sydney and the cities they were experiencing. The students then engaged in discussions about the disadvantages and advantages to living near canals, why the canals were built, discussed the materials used to build the Eiffel tower and the different type of transport that exists in Egypt.

Student feedback on their virtual experience:

“It felt like you could actually touch and grab the objects in real life” Eva (Class 4M)

“It was so interesting and everything felt so real.” Beau (Class 4H)

Next week will see other Yr 4 classes enjoy this excursion and we look forward to hearing about what they see, discover and wonder!

Head of Preparatory School

Welcome back to Term 3, I hope that everyone enjoyed a relaxing holiday and were able to spend some quality time with friends and family. This lovely, long, three week break gives teachers and students the ability to recharge their batteries and prepare for another busy term. The reuniting of friends on Tuesday morning in the Piazza was delightful to see. I would like to extend a welcome to the new students and their families who are joining the Redlands community this term. I look forward to continuing to lead the Preparatory School this semester, working collaboratively with students, staff and families and seeing everyone at the many exciting events we have planned, including the much-anticipated Gala Ball in August and later in the year, the K-6 Bush Dance.

Once again, the Preparatory section of the School had a large proportion of students who participated in the 2019 Redlands Cup at Thredbo. Together with some Redlands colleagues, my family and I enjoyed time down in the snow and thoroughly enjoyed watching race day with parents. With heavy snow falls the weekend prior, many Redlands students achieved wonderful results. Congratulations to Annabel Bailey, Georgia Bailey, April Oatley, Sebastian To, Oliver To, Aidan Schlederer, Kyler Simpson, Charlie Halliday and Sammy Halliday who competed in Division 6 Alpine Skiing and the Interschool’s Skiing competition with some 3,000 competitors. In a few weeks, some of these students will go on to represent Redlands at the State Championships. I must acknowledge Friends of Snowsports President, Lisa McDonald, and the team of parents whose energy and devotion in the lead up to the events and during was outstanding. They patiently guided me through my first bib-rolling session. Thank you to Mr Bruce Campbell, Mr Tom Kindred, Mr Adrian Carter and many dedicated Redlands staff, who ably and enthusiastically led this event and each year continue to provide a wonderful opportunity for all students to show their enormous talent and dedication to this sport.

Prior to the students’ return to school on Tuesday, the staff had the opportunity to learn together from the wide knowledge and expertise found within our school. Over 70 staff facilitated workshops in a range of learning opportunities across P-12, and I extend my thanks to the many Prep staff who gave their time to the organisation and delivery of these sessions.

I am excited to announce the upcoming Book Week theme, Reading is My Secret Power!. Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week. During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors and illustrators celebrate Australian children’s literature. Book Week will be held in Week 5 this term and our teacher/librarian, Mrs Roberts, has organised some exciting activities both in class and in Library lessons, including a Secret Power Dress-up Day on Thursday 22 August (P-6). Further details will be forwarded in upcoming Note Day issues.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Trading Cards – Yrs 1 and 2

Previously, students have been given the responsibility of bringing in trading cards to enjoy with their friends during Lunch. If you would like your child to bring in trading cards, please complete the note found on the Redlands Pulse and once signed, send to Mrs Hunt or Mrs Rosling at earlychildhood@redlands.nsw.edu.au. I encourage you to read this note together with your child, especially the conduct section. There is a chance that cards are lost or damaged; therefore, if the card is too valuable I strongly suggest you don’t bring it to school. If a student has reoccurring issues with the trading of cards, the privilege of trading will be withdrawn. I hope that allowing students to trade cards will result in the development of cooperation, turn taking, negotiating and discussion skills that can be promoted through this activity.

Giving Back

You may notice in the Reception area a little red bin with a sticker “Every Little Bit Helps”. After every holiday we aim to collect and redistribute unused and unwanted sample-sized hotel toiletries and amenity kits to people in need including Women’s Refuges, Homeless Shelters and Youth Shelters. If you have collected these items on recent trips and would like to donate them, please feel free to drop the items into the red bins. Thank you.

Yr 2 Sleeping Bag Day

As part of the students’ preparation for Yr 2 Camp towards the end of Term 3, students brought their sleeping bags to school for Sleeping Bag Day on the last day of Term 2. The children thoroughly enjoying spending time with their Yr 5 buddies reading and taking part in activities, whilst curled up in their sleeping bags. It was wonderful to observe the older students assisting the younger ones with packing away their sleeping bags, which is always a challenging activity!

Special Commendation – Milla Cullen Two Purple

In the holidays, Two Purple student, Mila Cullen was the youngest ever Australian to be chosen to represent her country at The Dance World Cup held in Portugal this year. Mila, aged 7, competed in the 10 and Under age division. She received a remarkable 3rd place in Lyrical and 5th place in the Broadway Jazz section. Milla also qualified for the World Hip Hop Battle finals. With over 6000 competitors, this is an outstanding achievement. Upon her return to Sydney, Mila placed 3rd in Jazz Dance at the prestigious Sydney Eisteddfod, dancing in the 9 Years age division. She has worked extremely hard and achieved commendable results.

Sports Choice

Sports choice is a topic parents and students can sometimes have trouble agreeing on. Our own action research indicates that the desire “to improve skills” and “to have fun” were the two most influential factors on a student’s sporting choice. The factors with the lowest influence on Sports choice are the desire to compete at a higher representation” and “to win”. This research tells us the Redlands Sports program must foster a culture of high level engagement and awareness of skill development in fun and enjoyable environments. The critical question students should reflect on when registering for a sport is not “what sport they should do”. Instead they should seek to understand, how they will demonstrate commitment to that sport.

The improvement of skills is not isolated to a physical domain, but also the social, emotional and a mental domains of development. The improvement of skills and the elements of enjoyment in a student’s education are vital to the long term goals of developing young people. Developing a student to have integrity, high moral standards and perseverance are outcomes we strive for in a Redlands education. Any sport is a vehicle for this goal. It is the commitment to this goal which makes the difference between success and failure.

Redlands Summer 2019/2020 Sport Registrations

The Registration link for the 2019/2020 Summer season will be open on Thursday 1 August, a reminder that all students will be emailed this link. Students need to complete in one representative sport per year (those students who completed a non-Rep option during Winter 2019 must complete a Representative sport for the 2019/2020 Summer season).

Athletics

Athletics training will continue this Friday afternoon at Balmoral Oval. Students are reminded to be at the Adams Centre for the bus to depart promptly at 3.30pm. There are changeroom facilities at Balmoral Oval. The bus will return to Redlands at the completion of training (usually around 5.30pm).

Basketball

Congratulations to Jackson Smyth (Yr 11) who has been selected to participate in the Basketball Without Borders Asia camp hosted by the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Basketball Without Borders Asia is an elite Basketball skills camp for top young players from the Asia-Pacific region. Jackson will be travelling to Tokyo in August for the duration of the camp. Best of luck to Jackson for this very exciting opportunity.

Fitness Centre

Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all students currently in a Representative Sport and there are sessions across all mornings Monday-Friday with additional afternoon sessions on both Monday and Friday. Please note the Fitness Centre will be open from 6.15am with the session starting immediately at 6.30am.

I would recommend that all students looking ahead to their Winter Representative Sport look to use these sessions as a way to prepare physically for their 2019 seasons. Sports such as Football, Rugby and Netball all require a level of strength and flexibility all of which can be achieved by using the Redlands Fitness Centre.

There will also be more information sent out regarding the High Performance Program for some of our athletes across the Representative Sports as we begin to prepare for the Summer Sport season. This program is designed to track certain athletes through their off-season/in-season, managing their goals and targets for their chosen sports. This program is a more individualised program and offers the students a more tailored approach to their conditioning and strength development.

There will be students approached over the coming weeks to look at individualised programs in preparation for their Summer Sports.

Football

Well done to our boys Football players who participated in the St Pius Cup over the holidays. It was a great opportunity for our boys to play a few friendly games during the holiday break. We entered a combined team of players from the 14s to the 1sts and the team finished the day in 4th place overall.

The End of Season Football Presentation will be held on Friday 6 September at Dee Why RSL. Please save the date, further details will be provided shortly.

Netball

We are into the last few rounds of both the ISA and NSNA Netball competition. Best of luck to all players this weekend. A reminder the Redlands Netball Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 12 September (Term 3, Week 8) at the Norths Leagues Club, more information regarding the dinner will be available shortly.

Rugby

With three games remaining in the regular season, Redlands Rugby can now look to solidify their places across the Top 4s. Both of our Junior sides are well in the hunt for finals with both teams playing some wonderful team Rugby. Seeing the development of these two sides is a great demonstration of how hard they have worked across training and in their matches.

For our 1st XV, these next three weeks should see us lock ourselves in the Top 4 and looking to face either Redfield or Chevalier in the first week of the finals. Putting together our most complete match of the season so far against SAS before the holidays is a positive sign of things to come.

Looking ahead to our post season, the Friends of Rugby group are busy planning our End of Season Presentation which will be held on 14 September. More information will be provided shortly.

Lastly, I would just like to highlight one of our students who represented Redlands in the NSW Schools Championships in the last week of the Term 2. Cameron Pascoe has played Rugby at Redlands for his entire time at the school, representing the 1st XV across multiple years and being voted as our Rugby Captain and our 1st XV Captain for 2019. He has embodied the ideals that we value within our program, working harder each season to improve his game and the players around him and seeing him develop further as a leader this season has been one of the most rewarding aspects so far. Cameron was selected in the ISA 2nd XV, narrowly missing out on the top honours and he was a perfect representation of both our program and Redlands. Please make sure to congratulate Cameron on his accomplishments, they are built off the back of so much determination and hard work.

Looking forward to seeing you all this weekend for our matches against SACS, all game times can be found on the Redlands Rhino.

Sailing

Congratulations to Zac West (Yr 12), who over the holidays has been competing in the World Championships in Japan. After four days of racing, Zac is still winning the competition. The final three days racing started on Monday. The results are extremely close but Zac is still ten points ahead of the Belgian, Simon de Gent and 17 points ahead of his club mate, Mark Louis. We look forward to hearing how the competition finished.

Junior Sport

Snowsports

Thredbo was a sea of Redlands jackets over the holidays and, in both lessons and racing, our Junior School skiiers and snowboarders were shining examples of Redlands resilience and energy on the snow. Despite some challenging conditions, Redlands Junior and Prep teams combined to take out the Primary Co-ed Skiing Championships, the Primary Co-ed Snowboard Championships and the Overall Primary Championship.

Individually there were some fantastic efforts and with 27 Junior School students qualifying through to compete at the NSW titles, there is some amazing skiing and snowboarding coming up.

The Redlands Cup again provided a wonderful entry point for novice racers to experience the thrill of the race without the pressure of Interschools. It’s a huge day on the mountain with 630 competitors and showcases our talented Snowsports athletes.

AFL

IPSHA AFL restarts this weekend with no change to the draw. The lads are entering their final two games for the season and have shown some great improvement. They’ll look to finish their season on a high, playing against Newington Wyvern at Mahoney Park, Marrickville at 8am this Saturday.

Redlands Girls AFL players will be treated to a fundamental skills session run by AFLNSW this Saturday at Moore Park from 10.00 – 11.30am. The information and draw has been emailed to all signed up players and teams will be determined in the next few weeks before matches begin on 10 August.

Football

The final three rounds of our IPSHA Football season kick off this weekend and there are some changes to venues and times.

Our Yr 5 team timeslot has changed:
5A are playing at 8.00am
5B are playing at 8.45am
5C are playing at 9.30am.
All Yr 5 matches are at Bressington Park, Underwood Road, Homebush.
5D are playing at Old Boys Oval, Newington College Stanmore at 10.15.

Team lists for this weekend’s split for matches have been emailed to all players.

Yr 4 matches have a change of time and are now being played at Redlands Oval at 8.00am.

Netball

Thanks to all the parents and players who assisted with our NSNA duty on the last Friday of last term. The final day of term is a difficult day to draw the duty, but the time and effort from all was greatly appreciated.

It was a great finish to the term last round with Redlands 13, 14 and 17 all coming away with wins.

Giants Netball stars Taylah Davies and Kim Green have been in this Wednesday working with our Yrs 3, 4 and 5 teams in Net Fit sessions, helping the girls build fitness and stamina coupled with skills for the rest of the season.

Rugby Sevens

Our final three rounds of Rugby are all at Koola Park and in keeping with the rolling draw, confirmed match times and field numbers will be emailed to all players as soon as they are received. Normally Thursday around lunchtime.

Athletics Carnival

The Redlands Junior School Athletics Carnival is right around the corner on Wednesday 7 August, Week 3 of term. Held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, it’s a massive event and all students are training hard in PE classes to build fitness and refine techniques across the full range of track and field events. Keep an eye out for online permissions.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

The Term 3 sporting calendar, showing all training, matches and events is available on Redlands Pulse.

For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.
