Issue 20 2023 Term 3 Week 1 - 20 Jul 2023

From the Principal

It was wonderful to see and feel the positive energy of the students as they returned to the campus on Tuesday with a spring in their step after a refreshing (and slightly longer) break.

On Monday we held our professional learning day as staff spent time sharing, collaborating and preparing for the term and semester ahead. A highlight of the day for me was the session, “Sharing Our Vision: Research and Professional Practice”, where we heard from staff members who have been conducting further professional learning, study and research into key areas to progress our current strategic plan.

Our e-Learning Coordinators and 2023 Redlands Innovative Teaching Fellowship awardees, Wendy Duckworth and Argiro Anagnostu, presented on their learning from visits to schools in Australia and attendance at the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Conference in the United States, as part of their investigation into innovative digital technologies in schools.

Our Deans of Students, Marita Jansons and Katie-Louise Clinton, and our Innovation and Entrepreneurial Learning Strategist, Liz Green, presented on our increasing involvement with the Round Square network of schools and received staff input on how we can further embed the Round Square ideals of Adventure, Democracy, Environmentalism, Internationalism, Leadership and Service at Redlands.

While History Teacher and Service Learning Coordinator, Rachael Riley, shared her research into First Nations learning as part of her 2023 NSW History Teachers’ Association Premiership Award.

Not only was it stimulating to hear how these teachers were furthering our strategic initiatives through their research and practice, but it was also inspiring to see the passion for true life-long learning in our staff.

During the break, it was wonderful to be able to attend the Redlands Cup Snowsports races and the Friends of Snowsports Redlands Cup Dinner in Thredbo. Congratulations to the many students who competed in this event and the Sydney Snowsports Interschools over the holidays, and let me extend my heartfelt appreciation to the staff and parents who made these events possible.

Finally, I am looking forward to attending Gala Arts on Friday evening – one of the annual highlights of the Redlands calendar where we showcase the diverse range of talents across our creative and performing arts community in a spirited House Competition format. There are still a few tickets available which can be purchased via the QR code on the Gala Arts flyer below.

We are certainly hitting the ground running at Redlands in Term 3!

Community Update

Welcome to Term 3.  We trust that you had the opportunity to enjoy some family time over the holiday period to rest and renew.

We recognise the vital relationship between home and school and provide opportunities for parents to actively engage with the School. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Redlands parents and to be involved with the School. Volunteer opportunities include classroom support, event support, Uniform Shop assistance, RPFA involvement or joining one of the Friends of Groups that support our many and varied Cocurricular activities. All of these important groups come together as passionate and dedicated volunteers to selflessly support and connect our School and the wider Redlands community. To explore how you might contribute within these groups please visit the RPFA page of Note Day.

Our Conditions of Enrolment seek to provide a firm foundation for an ongoing and harmonious relationship between the School and the family of each student. As recently communicated by our Principal, we have undertaken the first significant update of our Conditions of Enrolment since 2017 in alignment with our Strategic Plan, Mission, Vision and Values while outlining the School’s expectations to which all parties to the enrolment contract agree when accepting a place at Redlands. The updated Conditions of Enrolment can be found on Pulse, under School Policies and Procedures within the Key Information section.

Each year the graduating class at Redlands celebrate and acknowledge their Redlands education with a Legacy Gift. The Legacy Gift provides the cohort with a unique opportunity to thank the School for its support, encouragement and the opportunities offered while studying at Redlands. To read more on this important and noble cause, along with information on our Gala Ball check out the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

The start of a new semester is a great time to ensure that we have all the necessary information to support and care for your children, so please confirm that your contact details, emergency contacts and child’s medical information is all up to date through Pulse.

My thanks to the Redlands Parent and Friends Association Executive Team for their assistance in delivering our recent Second Hand Uniform Sale. This initiative enables us to recycle uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

We Commenced Term 3 with a Focus on Goal Setting and Positive Habit Formation

It was wonderful to welcome students and staff back to the Senior Campus this week for the start of Term 3. Tuesday commenced with Coaching Conversations with Tutors for all students in Yr 7 to 12. Using data from the Semester 1 Report and iGrow, students were asked to engage with the ‘Stand Out – Freak Out – Sort Out’ process in order to articulate goals and required habits for Semester 2. I was pleased to be able to share with students in the welcome back assemblies later that day some of the powerful goals set by students in their year group, such as….

To improve my English and Science results by expanding my responses with show don’t tell. (Yr 7)

I want to see growth in English, Maths, Geography and History. I will be more consistent with sticking to the study schedule that I make for myself so that I can achieve my personal best. (Yr 8)

I would like to focus on building better personal habits. I will continue making sure I get enough sleep and cut screen time down to 30 minutes a day. (Yr 9)

I would like to focus on discipline in my academic schedule and work ethic as an area that I would like to improve in. I will set up googlesheet study schedule that has designated study times to support me. (Yr 10)

I will commit to studying at least 2 hours a night with the focus on parts of subjects I don’t enjoy. (Yr 11)

Academically, I would like to focus on my French and Physics. I will practise 1-2 hours of French every day and improve my Physics by focusing on questions I find more challenging instead of opting for the easier ones that I find more fun. Personally, I also want to reduce the reliance on my phone. (Yr 12)

A sincere thank you to all tutors and members of the pastoral team for facilitating our students to engage in this important exercise at the start of a new semester.

During our assemblies on Tuesday I provided students with the following updates:

Study Centre

  • Changes to how students use the Study Centre, which includes wishing to use it more for personal or group study in addition to subject-specific help, surfaced from recent student consultation sessions
  • Based on student recommendations, there will be some changes for Term 3
  • There have been requests for different types of study spaces from students so we will move to a three space structure:
    • Silent Study
    • Collaborative small group
    • Subject Specific Support
  • Study Centre will run Monday to Thursday and be closed on Friday. On Friday students are expected to go home from school at 3.20pm unless otherwise invited to remain behind to work with a teacher or involved in a specific activity, such as Debating.
  • For Yr 7 to 11, Study Centre will now take place on Level 2 of the Learning Hub, and for Yr 12, Study Centre will take place on Level 3 of the Learning Hub.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to use Study Centre and lean into using it as a supportive resource to manage learning and develop or deepen study skills.
  • This new SC approach will commence in Week 2.

Mobile Phones

Students in Yr 7 to 10 will be required to leave their mobile phone in their locker during the school day and will not be permitted to carry their phone on their person in the classroom or playground. Based on observations from staff, students and parents, our Yr 7 to 10 students need a dedicated opportunity to re-set after the holidays. If a teacher or tutor requires a student or class to use their phone for a specific learning objective or as a dedicated learning tool, then they will notify students and provide time for them to visit their locker to collect and return it.

Not having a phone in the classroom is an opportunity for students to re-set, to cement some good habits for the new semester, to take a break from the constancy of social media ‘notifications’ and to really focus on the learning in each and every lesson. After all, this is their job – to come to school and learn, and it’s our job to create the right environment, the right context, for the students to learn and flourish. We know students will navigate this personal responsibility well.

If a student needs to make contact with home, they should do this via the Student Services Centre.

Some students may need to purchase a lock for their locker, so as to safely house their phone. They were given until Wednesday to arrange this and have been positively meeting this expectation.

Trial Examinations

Our Yr 12 students sit their Trial Examinations in Week 3 and 4 this term. They have spent their ‘holiday’ preparing and whilst tired and a bit overwhelmed, have more ‘in the tank’ than they think they do. They returned to HSC Drama Group Performance exams, English assessments and final speaking orals on Tuesday and have IB Theatre, Music, Visual Arts, Chemistry and Economics to complete before the Trials. It’s always a time of academic discomfort for Yr 12 students – this is a typical experience and they have a wealth of resources, including teachers and tutors, to support them along the way. We are really proud of their efforts so far.

Gala Arts

We look forward to this annual event tomorrow night at The Concourse Chatswood. Students and staff are busily preparing today and tomorrow and we hope to see you there in celebration of our students’ talents and passions. There are a few tickets left which can be booked via the QR code in the flyer above.

Open Day Planner

The 2023 Open Day planner has been released. You can access it here.

We strongly recommend students in Yr 11 and Yr 10 make the most of Open Days, before they get too busy in Yr 12.

Open Days are a great way to explore tertiary study options – you get to visit various campus facilities, speak to people studying and teaching the courses you are interested in and find out what opportunities such as exchange, internships and scholarships are on offer.

IB Recognition Statement Database

IB has a new resource for prospective students and parents to help university applicants find the best fit for them: The IB Recognition Statement Database.

The country or territory search function allows users to view published statements for each country or territory, including any official agreements or policies from the national or state governing bodies regarding IB curricula. Additionally, for the United States and Canada, there is a state or province search function as well.

The university function enables users to view individual universities within each country or territory and what each one has set as admissions criteria regarding IB programmes and courses, grades and subjects.

Term 3 Welcome

We extend a warm welcome to all parents and carers as we embark on the final term of Yr 12.

At the end of last term, it was rewarding to witness Yr 12 immerse themselves in the impactful Give Back Morning. To kickstart the day, Naomi Escott and Paul Bramble from Rough Edges spoke with Yr 12 about homelessness and the support and assistance Rough Edges provides to the homeless community. Rough Edges is, an Australian charity dedicated to helping vulnerable and marginalized individuals, especially those facing homelessness, addiction or mental health challenges. Presenter, Paul, who himself has experienced homelessness and addiction, shared his inspiring journey of overcoming adversity with our Yr 12 students. His powerful presentation was both moving and thought-provoking, leaving a lasting impact on everyone in attendance.

After the enlightening Rough Edges presentation, Yr 12 split into their respective Give Back groups and engaged in various service activities. The Vocal and Instrumental Performers and Bakers wowed the residents at Bougainvillea Retirement Village with their talented performances of acoustic and instrumental covers of popular songs. The French Speakers impressed a small group of elderly individuals by conversing fluently in French, creating meaningful connections. The Property and Maintenance team dedicated their efforts to cleaning and clearing classrooms at the Junior School, ensuring that the furniture, such as desks and chairs, found new homes in schools that were in need. The Winter Woolies Group went above and beyond by running the Winter Woolies Appeal Hot Chocolate Stand, raising an impressive total of $500. These funds will greatly support Rough Edges in their mission. Additionally, the group sorted and delivered blankets and warm winter clothing to organisations like St Vincent De Paul, the Salvation Army and Matthew Talbot, providing much-needed assistance to those in need.

Lastly, our largest Yr 12 group, comprised of Redlands House, Prep, and Junior School students, collaborated with peers of all ages. They engaged in fun and educational activities both inside and outside the classroom, fostering a sense of unity within our Redlands and Cremorne Community. It was truly heartwarming to witness each and every student embody the values that define Redlands: Respect, Responsibility, and Compassion. Their commitment to serving as leaders and making a positive difference in their activities was exemplary.

We are immensely proud of Yr 12’s dedication and the meaningful contributions they made during the Give Back Morning. It is a testament to their growth, maturity, and the strong foundation they have received at Redlands. As we looked forward to the Yr 12 Formal, we are confident that these experiences will continue to shape their journey and instill values that will guide them in the years to come.

A big thank you to all the Yr 12 Tutors who assisted at the Give Back and to Ms Kirsten Phillips and Ms Kate Moore for all their assistance on the day and to all the Redlands House, Prep and Junior School staff for allowing Yr 12 to enter their classrooms and engage with students.

Yr 12 Formal

Yr 12 had a fun, exciting and glamorous evening at the Yr 12 Formal at the Shangri-La on the eve of the last day of Term 3. All of Yr 12 looked glamorous, sharp and sophisticated. A big thank you to Erika Yamamoto, Sarah Matthews and Gemma Van de Peer for their support and assistance in preparation for the evening.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Oliver Noakes who presented at the UTS Start Up Summit in the first week of the holidays. He was one of four student entrepreneurs from schools across NSW who presented their side business. Oliver presented his start up Web Design business ‘Cloudsoft Design’ to over 2000 students from across NSW. Well done Oliver!

Congratulations to Taylor Riddell in Yr 12 who was one of five national winners in the Australian Economics Olympiad 2023. Taylor was invited to participate in the Australasian Economics Competition (AAEO). During the winter holidays, she competed with National Economics Olympiad winners from other countries, representing Australia with four other participants from across Australia. The Australian team won the final round of the competition and was awarded the gold medal! With other overseas and interstate participants, Taylor participated in a range of different activities, including a visit to the NSW Treasury and the Reserve Bank of Australia. On the final day, Taylor presented a case study about Australia’s childcare policies, in front of a panel of judges including the UNSW Economics professor Gigi Foster, Ashley Brosnan of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Ian Dehlsen of the NSW Treasury. This unique experience allowed Taylor to showcase her skills on an international stage while fostering cross-cultural exchange and collaboration.

Well done Taylor!

Congratulations to Sebastien Griffith who made the Hockey Australia Futures squad for 2023 out of the U18 nationals that finished last week. Only 3 of the 32 players selected were from NSW Hockey Team. Sebastien was the only 17 year old selected from NSW who was selected for Hockey Australia Futures Squad.

Well done Sebastien!

Congratulations to Ellie Trueman who competed at the CIS Hockey Championships this week. Ellie has been selected to compete at the NSW All Schools Hockey Championships.

Well done Ellie!

Welcome Back

Welcome back to Term 3! Yr 11 seemed very rested and relaxed as they returned to classes on Tuesday morning. The reality of a few assessments this week soon took over the conversation. We do hope everyone enjoyed a refreshing break with family and friends.

Several students were busy this break traveling, participating in courses, gaining experience in leadership opportunities outside of school and engaging in work experience. We look forward to sharing these opportunities at an upcoming Year Assembly.

Secondary School Counselling Parent Support Workshop 3

The SS Counselling team will be presenting their third workshop this term in Week 3 on Mental Health Issues: Anxiety & Depression (The Good, The Bad & The Ugly).  Parents can sign-up now.

You can find out more information and register your attendance through Pulse.

Peer Support

Thank you to the incredible team of Yr 11 students who participated diligently and enthusiastically each week throughout Semester 1 in Peer Support, guiding and engaging Yr 7 students, navigating the challenges of leading peers and younger students as well as working as a team of 8 within each Tutor Group. The Yr 7 students were incredibly grateful and truly loved working with this group of Yr 11. The Heads of House, Yr 7 Tutors and Peer Support Captains guided our Yr 11 Peer Support Leaders and their comments were overwhelmingly positive with the growth they witnessed in each individual student. Teachers were extremely impressed each Friday when Yr 11 entered the classroom and led their group.  Congratulations for an incredibly successful semester!

Year 10

Welcome to Term 3!

We trust you had a rejuvenating break and your child is now energised, fully prepared to embrace fresh endeavours and new prospects. Throughout this term, our primary emphasis will revolve around paving the way for senior studies, encompassing both readiness and finalising subject choices. Additionally, we will provide Yr 10 students with valuable assistance in preparing for their examinations and assessments.

Additionally, Yr 10 will have a continued focus on Service. Student Service is of great importance as it contributes to the personal growth and development of students. By participating in Service activities, students cultivate empathy, compassion and social responsibility, while also gaining a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and challenges. Following from our Service experiences gained last year, we know that such opportunities provide valuable opportunities for skill development, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. Furthermore, Student Service promotes social awareness and understanding, breaking down stereotypes and biases, and fostering a sense of responsibility towards social justice and equity.

Week 1 – Pastoral Focus

The pastoral focus for Week 1 was on Academic Care and establishing strong routines and structures in preparation for Term 3. This will be imperative for Winter School students as well as they adhere to a very independent for of learning.

Key student messages provided throughout the week:

Set Clear Goals

Define your academic goals for the term. What grades do you want to achieve? Which subjects are your priorities? Having clear goals will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the term – encourage students to use their Semester 1 report as a guide.

Create a Study Schedule

There are available resources on our Pastoral page to assist with this process:

Develop a study schedule that suits your needs and preferences. Allocate specific time slots for each subject and make sure to include breaks. Stick to your schedule as much as possible to maintain consistency and avoid procrastination.

Prioritise and Organise

Determine which subjects or assignments require immediate attention and prioritise them accordingly. Use the assessment planner to break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, and create a to-do list or use a planner to keep track of deadlines and important dates.

Develop Effective Study Techniques

Ask two different students in your Tutor group what strategies they use – are they the same or different from yours? Are there other strategies which might be useful?

Experiment with various study techniques and find what works best for you. This may include creating flashcards, summarising information in your own words, teaching concepts to others, or using mnemonic devices to remember key points.

Practice Regularly

This will require planning on your behalf.

Regular practice is crucial for reinforcing knowledge and building skills. Solve practice problems, complete assignments on time, and review your class notes regularly. Consistent practice will enhance your understanding and improve your performance in exams.

Form Study Groups

This will be an effective tool as you move into Yr 11 and 12.

Collaborating with classmates can be beneficial. Join or form study groups to discuss difficult topics, share perspectives, and teach each other. Explaining concepts to others is an excellent way to reinforce your own understanding.

Stay Organised and Manage Time

Keep your study materials organised, maintain a tidy study space, and manage your time effectively. Avoid distractions, such as excessive use of social media or other non-essential activities, during study hours.

Utilise Available Resources

Take advantage of all available resources, such as textbooks, online materials, libraries, tutoring services, and educational apps. Use them to supplement your learning and gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Review and Reflect

Regularly review your notes, assignments and previous exams to identify areas for improvement. Reflect on your study strategies and adapt them accordingly. Continuous review and self-reflection will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and make necessary adjustments.

Year 9

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to Redlands for Term 3! I trust that everyone was able to have a relaxing and enjoyable break, whether you were at home or abroad – I hope that Yr 9 is revitalised and ready to tackle another big term. There’s much happening for our cohort this term; subject selection for Year 10 and the launch of the collaborative learning projects, to name a few.

I want to particularly welcome Andrea Lazzarin, Luis Senftleben and Katie Unwin, three new students to Redlands who joined us in Yr 9 this term.

Yr 9 began the term by jumping into Growth Conversations with their Tutors across Periods 1 and 2 on Tuesday. By now, Yr 9 should be comfortable reflecting on their personal progress from the previous term and articulating specific goals for a successful year ahead. These conversations are now well-informed with student academic grades and approaches to learning helping students to see their own efforts and achievements. It was so wonderful to see students taking their Growth Conversations seriously and coming up with valuable goals for Term 3.

Here are some examples of the rich range of goals for Yr 9 this semester:

  • “I would like to focus on building better personal habits. I will continue making sure I get enough sleep and cut screen time down to 30 minutes a day.”
  • “I would like to focus on being less distracted in class because this is an area identified by teachers. I will become more mindful about how much I am talking in class.”
  • I would like to focus on being more detail oriented with assessment tasks because I often leave editing and refinement till last. I will fully complete each section of a task before starting the next.”
  • “I would like to improve my English essay writing and my organisation because it is important to develop essay skills and not procrastinate. I will use my student planner and calendar to plan out when to do assessments.”
  • “I want to focus on putting what I’ve done in the past couple of terms into all subjects because I previously put more effort into some subjects and not others. I will do this by gradually putting more effort in so that I don’t get burnt out. I will also focus on concentrating and listening more in class and paying more attention to boost my grades.”

Responsible use of Technology – Reminders for Students

This term all students from Yr 7-10 are to keep their mobile phones locked away in their lockers from when they start school until they finish the school day. Redlands recognises that the school environment provides a nice space to ‘break’ from social media and other phone apps. If a student needs to contact a parent or carer during the day, then they can visit the Student Services Centre to use the landline phones at the front desk. If a student needs to use their phone as a learning tool, they are to collect their phone at the beginning of the lesson from their locker and return it at the end of the lesson.

Additionally, loan laptops are now only for devices that are being repaired (with a letter explaining this from a parent – in future a form will be sent to parents to sign and return). There is no option for a loan device if the student has simply forgotten their laptop or forgotten to charge it. A limited number of charging bays are still available for laptops opposite the ICT Service Desk.

Student Uniform Reminders

Winter Uniform

For the duration of Term 3, students are required to wear their winter school uniform, including their blazers, when travelling to and from school. School shoes should be black leather shoes, polished, and hair needs to be kept tidy, with hair longer than shoulder length worn up and out of the face, and no hair dye is permitted. No jewellery is allowed apart from one pair of plain gold or silver studs or sleepers. The full uniform details can be found in student planners and in the school uniform guide on the Year 9 Pulse page.

Sport Uniform

The Redlands Sport Uniform is to be worn only during sport activities:

  • For all PDHPE (practical) classes
  • For all Redlands Sports Carnivals
  • For Thursday Sport day

The Sport uniform should never be worn for a full school day except for Thursday Sport days.

Parent Presentation – Weathering the storm: Responding to teen anxiety and depression

In Week 3 of this term, Tuesday 1 August, a presentation will be held specifically designed to support parents and caregivers who have young people with diagnosed anxiety and depression, as well as those who display signs and symptoms of these conditions. During this session, the crucial role of parents in responding to mental health issues will be explored, helping you to support your child in times of distress by gaining a deeper insight into your teenager’s experiences.

You can find out more information and register your attendance through Pulse.

Year 8

Welcome Back!

A warm welcome back to Term 3 after what I hope has been a nice break. Whether you were off on an adventure or around home, I hope that there was an opportunity for you and your family to rest.

Coaching Conversations and Organisation

During Tutor this week all Year 8 students have been involved in preparing for the term. There has been a two-fold approach during Tutor Time which involved students having a one-to-one Coaching Conversation with their Tutor and students spending time to organise their term.

The Coaching Conversation is an ongoing process which students engage with each term. It should ultimately result in the student reflecting on their efforts and habits in the previous term and setting a concrete focus for the term to come for the purposes of self-improvement. I encourage you to talk about this with your student so that you also have an understanding of the habits they are trying to create for themselves and can support them in this. Best practice is to focus on the development of one small habit each term.

As part of organizing themselves students have been encouraged to use the term planner developed by the Dean of Academic (7-10) and presented at the Building Blocks to Success information evening in Term 2.

Please see a copy of this attached – Term 3 – School-Life Fit Schedule – Year 8 (2)

Term 3: Reflecting on Where we have Been and Where we are Going

‘O, wind, if winter comes, can spring be far behind?’

– Percy Bysshe Shelley

Welcome back to Redlands for Term 3! I trust that everyone was able to have a relaxing and enjoyable break, and perhaps even an adventurous one (I have already heard many Europe stories!), and that our Yr 7 students are revitalised and ready to take on another busy term. While the heavens decided to turn on the rain for the Staff PD day on Monday, the sunshine shone out beautifully as students came back through the gates on Tuesday; an auspicious start to the term.

I want to particularly welcome Archie Cooper and Dylan McQueen, two students new to Redlands who joined us in Yr 7 this term.

Yr 7 immediately jumped into Term 3 with Growth Conversations with their Tutors across Periods 1 and 2 on Tuesday. Having commenced Terms 1 and 2 with such conversations, students have become more comfortable reflecting on their personal progress from the previous term and articulating specific goals for a successful year ahead. These conversations are now well-informed with student academic grades and approaches to learning helping students to see their own efforts and achievements. It was really pleasing to see students taking their Growth Conversations seriously and coming up with valuable goals for Term 3. I have noted down a few examples of student goals below, as indicators of the level of thought apparent in their conversations with their Tutors:

  • “I would like to focus my efforts more in Science, by building my confidence with the content and taking care with organisation, assessments & classwork.”
  • “I would like to focus on reading more as I do not think I read enough. I think it will help to develop my vocabulary, expression and spelling. This in turn will help develop my confidence and skill in writing. I’d like to try to average 15-20 minutes of outside school reading on most nights.”
  • “I would like to balance my home learning and free time in order to maximise most of my time. I will create a timetable for after school home learning activities and assessment dates. This will help me prioritise what I need to study. I would also like to focus on my netball skills by giving my all in training and taking the risk to try out new skills.”
  • “I would like to improve my diligence across all subjects by making sure I complete all my home learning tasks up to a high standard and on time, I will achieve this by creating a daily to-do list and taking extra care to ensure I am not rushing through and I am doing my best work.”
  • “I want to commit to my assessment preparation and planning by setting a study and assessment schedule and using the notification and marking criteria as resources.”

With such a collection of excellent aspirations, I am confident Yr 7 will hit the ground running this term!

Term 2 Flashback – Peer Support Party, Final Assembly and Locker Clearance

Peer Support Party

Last term ended with much joy and student recognition. The cohort enjoyed their final Peer Support session, reflecting on their growth and showing their gratitude to their Yr 11 Peer Support leaders who have given them such great advice and guidance, celebrating through a pizza part on the Fahl Garden. Zac Fowler and Michelle Byron gave all the Yr 11 leaders a heartfelt ‘thank you’ on behalf of the Yr 7 cohort, each reflecting on some of the engaging and supportive activities Yr 11 had coordinated for them over Semester 1; and students handed out the gratitude cards which they had each written to their Yr 11 leaders. The Peer Support program has been a wonderful space for Yr 7 students to learn from their older peers and this year’s Yr 11 leaders were exceptional in their roles – caring, enthusiastic, empathetic and thoughtful. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all the Yr 11s who helped out here.

Term 2 Final Assembly

We also closed Term 2 with a final assembly which celebrated student achievements over the term, recognising all those in Yr 7 who had received academic merits in their subjects. These merit certificates will be handed out to students in our Year Assembly next week.

Importantly, the assembly was made particularly special by the fact that Erol Jackson read out the prayer and the entire assembly was emceed by our very own Leo Campbell and Clem Roumanoff! Both Leo and Clem did an excellent job of introducing each speaker, moving between each presentation and generally facilitating the presentation of the assembly smoothly. It can be daunting standing in front of hundreds of people but they both presented with confidence and flair! As a fun fact, I found out after the assembly that the running schedule pages had got out of order and so there had been a misstep in the scheduling, but Clem and Leo covered it so professionally that no one in the audience even noticed!

Locker Clearance

Term 2 also ended with students clearing out their lockers at the end of the day. It is a good time to remind everyone that lockers must have a lock on them, which is capable of being locked (particularly important now that phones must be stored in them – see below), and they should be kept tidy so that books, student resources and school bags can fit in them neatly. Bags should not be left on the ground outside lockers!

Responsible use of Technology – Reminders for Students

Last term, the School began an initiative which required Yr 7 and 8 students to keep their mobile phones locked away in their lockers from when they start school until they finish the school day. Yr 7 did excellently well at adhering to this phone management focus. This term, the focus has been extended from Yr 7 all the way up to Yr 10 with Redlands recognising that the school environment provides a nice space to ‘break’ from social media and other phone apps. If a student needs to contact a parent or carer during the day, then they can visit the Student Services Centre to use the landline phones at the front desk.

School shoes should be black leather shoes, polished, and hair needs to be kept tidy, with hair longer than shoulder length worn up and out of the face, and no hair dye is permitted. No jewellery is allowed apart from one pair of plain gold or silver studs or sleepers. The full uniform details can be found in student planners and in the school uniform guide on the Yr 7 Pulse Page.

Sport Uniform

The Redlands Sport Uniform is to be worn only during Sport activities:

  • For all PDHPE (practical) classes
  • For all Redlands Sports Carnivals
  • For Thursday Sport day

The Sport Uniform should never be worn for a full school day, except for Thursday Sport days.

Be the Best Version of Yourself

The term is off and running and it has been great to see, hear and feel the energy of the students and staff as we look forward to the term ahead.

In our first assembly, one of my key messages to the students was about the high level of expectation that we have of them to be the best version of themselves in all they do. Whether in their learning, in the playground, in cocurricular activities and how they behave and live our School Values, the challenge was that they do these to the best of their ability which would be coupled with high support from our staff. If the opportunity arises at home, I encourage you to weave this message in and perhaps ask your child what that means to them and what it would look like.

We were delighted to again welcome both our Principal, Mr Corcoran, and our Deputy Principal, Ms Partington, and in his address to the Junior School, Mr Corcoran asked the students to think of the midyear break as half-time or an interval to reset and then plan for a strong second half performance.

Mosman Youth Awards in Literature 2023

This week, I was delighted to receive notification that Bertram Haines (Yr 5) has been shortlisted in the awards presentation for this year’s Mosman Youth Awards in Literature at the end of next month.

This is a wonderful achievement and we extend our congratulations to Bertram and indeed to all of our students who entered this writing competition.

Snowsports

Also in assembly, we were delighted to recognise our Junior School students involved in both the Redlands Cup and Sydney Interschool Snowsports Championships over the break. I know that they represented the school with immense pride and success and I add my gratitude to students, teachers and parent helpers who combined together to make this a wonderful start to the snow season for Redlands. More details can be found in the Junior School Sports section of Note Day.

Junior Music Festival Tickets

As communicated by the Music Department, tickets are now available through Trybooking until Wednesday 2 August. Please be advised that Junior School students DO NOT need a ticket.

This is a free event and each family may reserve a maximum of two tickets. Please respect this guidance which will allow all families the chance to watch their child perform. The performance will be professionally filmed and access to this recording will be distributed following the festival.

Student-Led Conferences (Week 4)

Communication was sent earlier this week about our Student-Led Conferences which take place in Week 4 (7-11 August). These will be face to face conferences that involve students leading the conversation about their learning.

Bookings open at 9am next Tuesday 25 July and close at 9am on Thursday 3 August. To access the School Interviews booking process, please click HERE and the code is awn4j (case sensitive).

Tuesday Clubs

Parents of students who had signed up for the Semester 2 teacher-run Tuesday clubs’ program were emailed at the end of last term with a reconfirmation and these start next week.

Science Club (Junior School Yrs 3-6)

This term, we are pleased to host a Junior School Science Club again led by an external provider, The Brainy Bunch Kids. Please see the flyer for information and booking details via the website and the club starts next Tuesday. There was an error in the flyer sent last term which had intimated it was open to K-6 but this club will only be offered to Junior School students this term.

Head of Preparatory School

There is a wonderful sense of vibrancy and energy this week in the Prep School. We warmly welcome everyone back and we look forward to meeting all our new Redlands families who have joined us this term. It has been a positive start for all our students as they settled smoothly back into their daily school routines.

Today I enjoyed spending time outdoors and having lunch with some of our Prep students who told me they were so excited to be back at Redlands – “seeing my friends” and “eating lunch together” were a few highlights of the week. Lunch time provides an opportunity for our children to gather outdoors, make social connections, converse, enjoy eating nutritious food, playing and having fun, whilst surrounded by their peers.

As we are now halfway through the year, I continue to be inspired by our Prep students who are learning to step up and ‘have a go’ as they embrace new challenges both in and out of the classroom.

This week I have been working closely with our dedicated P-2 teachers who provide consistent, enriching learning opportunities for our students. I have observed our Prep students as they find real moments of surprise and the delight of discovery as they collaborate and learn with each other. This is combined with time throughout the day to find contemplative, quiet spaces to read, write, construct, think, imagine or wonder. It is all happening in the Prep School and we look forward to seeing Mrs Breckenridge when she returns to school next week.

After School Prep Sport

Commences on Friday 21 July.

Please contact Lucy Wrigglesworth if you have any booking enquiries.

Redlands Cup and Interschool Race Week

Congratulations to our Prep students who competed in the Redlands Cup on 9 July in Thredbo. Redlands Cup is an introduction into the exciting world of Snowsports racing with training taking place prior to the event.

Jemima Joyce and Saskia Williams from Kindy along with Annabel Grinham and Jonathan Burton from Year 1 competed in the Redlands Cup. The conditions were difficult with strong winds and icy slopes but our Prep students took on the challenge.

Well done to Annabel, Jemima and Saskia who came second in the Division 6 Alpine GS Girls team event.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday break. To our new families commencing at Redlands House this term, welcome and we look forward to your involvement within our Preschool program.

My email contact is chuon@redlands.nsw.edu.au or please feel free to pop in for a chat at any time.

I look forward to an exciting journey of learning with the children in Term 3.

Staff Changes

We have had a few changes to the Redlands House staff this term, please say hello if you see some new faces.

Yellow Class – As you know, Miss Monckton left us at the end of Term 2, Miss Beatriz Troncoso has taken over Miss Monckton’s role as the assistant in Yellow Class. Many of you already know Beatriz, or Miss T, as the children call her. Beatriz has worked for the last 2 years in our Extended Care program, therefore already knows all of the Redlands House children so it will be an easy transition for everyone.

Transition Gold – Miss Caddick also left us at the end of Term2 and Miss Heard has now returned from maternity leave and will be working with the Transition Gold Class three days a week. Mrs Amy Johnson has also joined the Transition Gold Class and will work the other two days.

Extended Care – With Miss Troncoso now working on Yellow Class we have Miss Tara Wnek assisting Miss Rai with extended care. Miss Tara already knows most of the children as she has previously worked in Vacation Care and casually in the Preschool earlier in the year.

Some Important Dates for Term 3

  • 22 August –        Book Week Dress Up day
  • 25 August –       Grandparents Day and Book Week dress up parade

Secondary Sport

As we return from the holiday break and get back into the final weeks of the Winter Season it is a timely reminder for all involved as to why sport is crucial for students’ holistic development and their long-term success. Each student possesses unique personality traits that shape their approach to sports and as educators and coaches, it is our responsibility to cultivate their individual values within the sporting environment. Within the Redlands Sports Programs we nurture these through:

  • Coaching Strategies – understand that different personalities respond to distinct coaching approaches. Some students may thrive on direct and assertive coaching, while others may require a more supportive and nurturing approach. Adapt coaching techniques to suit their needs and foster a positive learning environment.
  • Diversity – understanding that students and coaches come from various backgrounds and possess different personalities, we embrace this diversity and create inclusive atmosphere where each individual feels valued and respected.
  • Leadership – provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills within the sporting context. Encourage them to take on roles such as team captains, mentors or organisers, allowing them to express their unique personalities while fostering responsibility and teamwork.
  • Reward and Recognition – recognising and rewarding students individual and team achievements, efforts and values. This could include personalised feedback, certificates and special mentions. Tailoring recognition to their personality and values reinforces the idea that their unique contributions are valued and appreciated.
  • Personal Growth – shifting the focus from winning at all costs to personal growth and development. Encouraging students to set realistic goals, celebrate incremental progress and learn from setbacks. By shifting the focus, students can develop a stronger sense of self-worth and resilience.
  • Self-Awareness – helping students understand their own strengths, weaknesses and values. Foster self-reflection and encourage them to set personal goals that align with their values. By developing self-awareness, student can make a conscious choice to reflect their personality and values in their sporting endeavours.
  • Sportsmanship – instil the values of fair play, respect and integrity in all aspects of sports. Encourage students to display good sportsmanship by celebrating successes, acknowledging opponents’ achievements, and handling defeat gracefully. With a key emphasis on the importance of ethical behaviour both on and off the field.

As a department our focus moving forward is to nurture the values and different student personalities in the sporting environment.

Bus Transport

As a school we pride ourselves on the way in which our students participate and train in their chosen fields, providing opportunities for all students to participate in a range of activities is something that we will continue to do. Providing transport to those activities is something that we do as a school, this is a gentle reminder that when travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail the meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Junior Sport

Welcome to Term 3, we hope you and your family enjoyed the holidays. We had a large number of Junior School students involved in Snowsports over the break, participating in the Redlands Cup and Sydney Interschools, and it was great to hear that our students were great ambassadors for the school on and off the snow. Thank you to our Junior School teachers and staff who assisted over the 10 days. We wish those students who progress to State Interschools the best of luck in their preparation. A full report by MIss Steer can be found in the Snowsports section of Note Day.

We have a very busy term with the Winter Sport season for Rugby and Football wrapping up in 3 weeks, our Year 5&6 girls AFL season commencing this week before we transition to pre-season Summer Sport skills for Mixed Basketball, Touch Football, Girls Basketball and Tennis.

Last week all Junior School families would have received a detailed note outlining the term ahead for both Representative Sport and Non-Representative Sport. The information and links within this note will assist you over the next 10 weeks so please make this your first reference for any questions you may have. The notification also contained a second document being a reminder of our established guidelines that support the management of all visitors to our campus for sport. Your review of this document as well as the respect and support of these guidelines are appreciated.

We are privileged and proud to be able to host our community, along with visiting School communities, on our Junior Campus for many of our home sporting fixtures. As we finish our representative Winter Sports fixtures in the coming weeks, please be reminded of the established guidelines that support the management of all visitors to our campus on Saturdays before, during and after matches.

These guidelines are as follows:

  • Entry and exit to the school oval for Football matches is via the oval gate on Murdoch St. There is no access to the School via any entrance from Allister St.
  • Parking in surrounding streets should not impact our neighbours’ properties. Please do not park across driveways and keep noise to a minimum if you are arriving for one of the first matches.
  • There are no dogs/pets permitted onsite.
  • Playground equipment and climbing frames are not to be used on Saturday mornings per the signage.
  • When you arrive onsite, please move to the Piazza which is designated for spectators. Restroom facilities are also located on this side of the campus.
  • The playing surface is reserved for the players, coaching staff, medical staff and referees only.
  • The area adjacent to the basketball hoops is reserved for the two arriving teams to warm up. Your respect and support of these guidelines are appreciated.

Looking ahead to Term 4 when we commence Basketball and will host home matches in Dunnet Hall or on Redlands House Courts, please note the guidelines below that are in place on match days:

  • Entry to Dunnet Hall and or Redlands House Courts for Basketball is via Allister St only.
  • Please consider our neighbours when entering and exiting Dunnet Hall by not bouncing basketballs outside on the path and not parking across private property, double parking, etc.
  • There are no spectators permitted inside Redlands House courts due to the run-off areas and court boundary lines being in close proximity to each other. Spectators may view the matches from the boundary fence on Allister St.
  • Spectators inside Dunnet Hall may sit on the ‘spectator side’ of the court, which is on the side of the court closest to the foyer. The opposite side of the hall is reserved only for players, coaching staff and scorers.

Term 3 Upcoming Dates

For Term 3 upcoming dates and key events these can be viewed by selecting this link.

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport, only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold, they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable, please include when they can return to normal training so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Sport Calendar

The sport calendar for Term 3 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2023 JS Sport Calendar

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Acknowledging Alumni Jennifer Psaroulis

A further acknowledgement of the contribution of alumni, Jennifer Psaroulis.

Jennifer graduated from Redlands in 2019 as the Dance Captain, with a strong background of contribution to dance. Given her outstanding performance throughout her schooling years, Jennifer assisted with the choreography in the End of Year Redlands Dance concert and, on the basis of her exceptional talent, was offered a position as a Dance Teacher immediately after graduation, a first in the history of the Redlands Dance Department.

During her tenure as a Dance Teacher, Jennifer displayed outstanding maturity as a choreographer and mentor which is borne out in the results of the solo and group eisteddfods, she was responsible for. These include:

  • guiding and supporting 29 individual students in private lessons;
  • choreographing 57 solo, duo and trio eisteddfod routines in total, all of which placed in at least one eisteddfod; and
  • choreographing 12 group eisteddfod routines which consistently placed at eisteddfods.

In 2022, Jennifer’s ‘Senior Jazz Performers 1’ Group, which featured completely original choreography created exclusively by Jennifer, won the Extreme, Sydney and DanceLife Unite eisteddfods in succession, significantly contributing to the reputation of the Redlands Dance Academy.

All of these achievements were underpinned by Jennifer’s commitment and passion for her students and her mentorship and support, which the School acknowledges and thanks Jennifer for.
