Issue 20 2022 Term 3 Week 1 - 21 Jul 2022

From The Principal

It has been a memorable start to the term, with the announcement on Monday that Sean Corcoran has been appointed as Principal of Redlands from January 2023. Chair of the Board, Glenda McLoughlin informed the staff in person and the volume and length of the applause said it all. I have the utmost respect for Sean as an educator and person of deep integrity, humility, drive and strategic vision. He has a detailed knowledge and understanding of the Redlands community and has played an integral role in the development of the Strategic Plan. I congratulate him wholeheartedly on his appointment and look forward to supporting him in the transition into the role and beyond.

On Monday we held our Cultures of Collaboration Staff Professional Learning Day, during which a large number of staff presented a range of workshops for their colleagues, along with academic staff from UTS. One of the greatest assets of Redlands is the professional culture of staff, who regularly collaborate on pedagogical practice and undertake research together to inform new initiatives and program development. The Deans of Students (P-6) and (7-12), Katie-Louise Clinton and Marita Jansons, enthusiastically presented to staff on their recent Innovative Teacher Fellowship experience in the US. They attended a prominent Social and Emotional Learning conference in Columbus Ohio and visited a number of schools and universities to build connections and learn about their programs in this most important area.

My thanks to staff and all parents involved in Friends of Snowsports for their support in the running of the Redlands Cup during the break. It was wonderful to once again be able to host the event for around 400 students from different schools and to note the fine performances by Redlands students.

We continue to closely monitor the situation with COVID and as always will adapt our protocols based on the latest advice and what we are observing within our school community. The number of student cases reported early this week was actually smaller than we had expected; however, we acknowledge that this may change over time and we will inform parents whenever we see a spike in a particular group. Currently, mask wearing in the Secondary School is only mandated when large gatherings are held such as assemblies; however, students and staff are supported to wear masks at other times. The significant investment that the School made in infrastructure to improve air quality across all campuses has certainly proven to be a long-term investment in the health and wellbeing of the community. If you have any queries or feedback please continue to send this through to feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Gala Arts

I am very much looking forward to attending my first Gala Arts production this Friday evening, having heard so many positive comments about the event from students, staff and parents. The last time it was held was in 2019 and I know that the students are excited about performing and being back onstage at The Concourse in Chatswood.

Gala Arts has long been recognised as one of the premier events in our Performing and Creative Arts calendar, with students competing in the categories of Dance, Instrumental, Theatre, Vocal and Visual Arts. This short video gives a taste of the event. There are still tickets available and these can be purchased HERE.

Master Plan Survey

Thank you to all those parents and carers who have currently provided their input to our Master Plan Survey that was sent out on Monday. The survey is open until 11.59pm tonight, Thursday 21 July for parents and carers and can be accessed HERE.

Pink Sock Charity Round

This Saturday 23 July, it will be a sea of pink on our Sports fields with Secondary School students wearing pink socks in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. Students can purchase pink socks from the Uniform Shop or via Flexischools in support of this charity and all parents and coaches are also encouraged to wear a pink item on the day.

Redlands Spring Fair

Please save the date of Saturday 3 September, 9am-3pm, in your calendars for our Redlands Spring Fair. This will be an exciting day of carnival fun for the whole family, with rides and games for the children, international food stalls and live entertainment. The RPFA will be providing more details about the Spring Fair during the coming weeks.

Community Update

Welcome to Term 3.  We trust that you had the opportunity to enjoy some family time over the holiday period to rest and renew.

It was a pleasure to attend the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) Meeting early this week. The RPFA continues to explore ways to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life and their support and guidance remains invaluable. Our committed and generous volunteer members highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands and we are ever grateful for their contribution. If you are looking to connect with our community groups then please reach out to the passionate and diverse experience of our Class and Year Group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support Redlands families.

The Master Plan consultation process continued this week with a focus on feedback from our parent and carer community. Thank you for your consideration and contribution within this important process. We value your voice and feedback and do hope that you are able to complete the survey which remains open until 11.59pm this evening. We are excited about the journey our School will take in the development of a new Master Plan, and we look forward to sharing its progress with Redlands parents and carers as the year unfolds.

The Redlands Spring Fair is back and will take place on Saturday 3 September. There has been a great deal of excitement as the Spring Fair banners went up around the School this week. We are delighted to announce that the Spring Fair will be returning to the Senior Campus this year following a number of years on the Junior Campus. A program of events along with details on rides, tickets and activities for this much loved Redlands community event will be provided soon.

Our alumni of Redlanders can be found locally and globally. We continue to ensure the important connections with our community are nurtured and developed through Redlands dedicated alumni engagement program that includes interstate and international reunions and networking opportunities. We value greatly the relationships we build and maintain with our alumni and we are excited by the opportunities and initiatives they help support in preparing our current students for life beyond the school gates. It is always a pleasure to hear what our alumni community have been up to, and this week we are delighted to share Aysha Swanson’s (Redland 2020) journey here from Redlands to UQ and beyond.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support this term and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Aysha Swanson (Redlander 2020)

Congratulations to Aysha Swanson (Redlander 2020) who recently received the Academic Excellence prize – Molly Budtz-Olsen Prize – at the Women’s College Academic Dinner.

We caught up with Aysha and asked her a few questions about life at the University of Queensland.

What you are studying at university and what has your experience at UQ has been like?

Moving to Queensland to study a Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Majoring in Western Civilization) has been the most rewarding experience. I live on campus at the Women’s College which is where I was awarded the academic excellence prize previously mentioned. My time at both the Women’s College and UQ has been incredible, I have not only excelled in my academics but also in my passions for music and theatre. They have both given me countless opportunities within their incredibly welcoming community. Moving away from home was probably the best decision I ever made as it allowed me to grow in more ways than one.

Did your Redlands journey help or prepare you in any way in making decisions about University, for example, where to attend, what to study or any other experiences?

Redlands, of course, had a huge influence on my university and academic choices. Firstly, undertaking the IB Diploma really helped prepare me for my university assignment based course, it made the transition from high school to university so much easier. Secondly, all the information I gained on where to study and what to study came from the Redlands Careers Advisor, who ultimately gave me the opportunity to apply for and receive the Ramsay Scholarship which I am currently on.

Memories of Redlands

The most memorable aspect of Redlands is definitely the communities I was involved in from cocurricular groups. From the Musical to Hockey training, I cherish the memories and friends I made from each and every rehearsal or training session.

Advice for current Secondary School students

My advice would be to take advantage of all the opportunities and resources Redlands provides you. Especially your Careers Advisor when considering university options. I ended up in a degree that I didn’t even know existed before talking to the Careers Advisor and I am incredibly lucky to receive the scholarship that they recommended I apply for. I also recommend picking a degree that you are actually passionate about. Although it gets tough sometimes, I genuinely enjoy every course in my degree, which, I believe, is the main reason why I have excelled academically. Many of my friends picked a degree because of its job prospects, only to end up unhappy every minute of their course. If you pick something you are passionate about, it will lead you to something you are equally passionate about.

RPFA

Welcome back to a new school term and welcome to all the new families joining Redlands! We hope you had a wonderful winter break and are ready for another fun term ahead.

Don’t forget to buy pink socks (available for purchase from the Uniform Shop), which will be worn by our Secondary School athletes at this weekend’s games. At our home games at Macquarie Uni, Friends of Rugby will have a cake stall and Friends of Football will have a guessing jar; proceeds will be donated to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

The highly anticipated Spring Fair on Sat 3 Sept is a day centred around food, fun and entertainment, showcasing the community’s diversity and depth of students’ art-related activities. We are excited to announce that the Fair will be moving back to the Senior Campus, so we will be able to showcase the new Learning Hub and Fahl Gardens as well as the 100-year old heritage-listed Liggins Building. Please let us know if you’re interested in being a stall captain or helping out at any of the many rides, games or food stalls on the day here.

Head of Secondary School

Welcome Back to Term 3

Students returned to school on Tuesday, refreshed after their mid-year break. It has been wonderful to hear tales from those who traversed ski slopes, explored cities of Europe or restored at home in Sydney.

During our 7-9 Welcome Assembly this week, Mr Webber shared the news that Mr Corcoran, Deputy Principal, has been appointed as Principal from 2023. Mr Webber and Mr Corcoran will be joining Yr 10-12 for their assembly next week. The Secondary School warmly congratulates Mr Corcoran on this well-deserved appointment.

Looking ahead to Semester 2, students have started the term by reflecting on their Semester 1 Reports and setting personal process-based goals for the remainder of the year – focusing on the power of their habits over desired outcomes.

Prevailing wisdom claims that the best way to achieve what we want in life – getting better results, building better friendships, relaxing more and worrying less, achieving success in our sport or activity – is to set specific, actionable goals. Whilst goals are good for setting direction and planning progress, habits are best for making progress and it’s the process that makes the difference.

This week, students are meeting with their Tutors for a Connection Conversation where they will reflect on their personal strengths, areas for growth and discuss their Semester 2 process goal. Here are a few goals already set by students:

“I will prioritise balancing my cocurricular activities with my schoolwork leading into Yr 11… I will aim to do this by planning out my time more efficiently and staying on top of my work in class so I have less to revise when I need to study for exams.”

“In order to gain knowledge and expand my vocabulary in Chinese, I will study after school by completing revision in my personal study time. By the end of the term, I would like to have a solid set of study notes which I can use to revise for examinations”

“To complete my school work more efficiently, I will complete my home learning before I engage in free time. I will minimise distractions by putting my phone away.”

Fundraising Efforts

Last term, Yr 10 engaged with a Homelessness Initiative. Students collected close to ten boxes of donations. Six were delivered to Wayside Chapel with new or gently used items/clothing they had requested. They were delivered the first Monday of the holiday and Wayside Chapel was overwhelmed and very thankful for the amount of donation items. Another four boxes with kitchen items were delivered to St Vinnies Emergency Housing as requested by Matthew Talbot. They were also very appreciative and said they can always use more items. The bake sale, held in the final week of Term 2, raised just under $1000 and a cheque will be written to Wayside Chapel this term.

Jeans for Genes

Redlands has a long history of supporting the annual Jeans for Genes Day fundraising initiative. This year, in 2022, the event will be held on Friday 5 August. The charity’s mission is to support families and children with birth defects or incurable genetic diseases. Last year, Redlands raised close to $10,000. In 2022, we are aiming to match or surpass this total. Head to the Redlands Jeans for Genes Fundraising page to make a donation.

Redlands Cup and Snowsports Interschools

Redlands Cup and the Snowsports Interschools competitions took place at Thredbo and Perisher during the holidays, after two years without these events. Redlands Cup was a great success, with around 400 competitors from around the state. In the Interschools Competition, Redlands had 11 team podium finishes! A special congratulations to Harrison Fung (Yr 12) who placed 2nd in Division 1 Moguls, Sienna Wessels (Yr 11) who placed 2nd in Division 1 Snowboard GS and 3rd in Division 1 Snowboard Cross, and Ava Keller (Yr 7) who placed 3rd in Division 3 Moguls. We expect to have qualifiers for the State Championships coming up in a few weeks.

Student Voice Surveys

In Week 3, students will have the opportunity to complete their annual Student Voice Survey. This survey is a chance for students to have their say in terms of how teachers can best support them in the classroom. The survey will tell us about how students feel about things such as classroom activities, feedback, assessment and learning environment.

Pink Socks

This Saturday 23 July, we are hosting a pink sock round in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. We encourage all students across the Secondary School to purchase pink socks from the Uniform Shop in support of this charity. All parents, coaches are also encouraged to wear a pink item on the day. On this day the Sports Department has arranged for a large number of our Winter Sports teams to play at our home venue, Macquarie University.

Winter School

We wish our 60 Yr 10 Winter School students well as they depart for a term at High Country Campus on Tuesday. The Winter School staff arrived at the High Country Campus site last Saturday to prepare themselves for the arrival of students. The HCC site has undergone significant improvements for Term 3, including new bathrooms in the dorms, more storage for students, new sofas, new classroom furniture, better heating – the list goes on. The students have just under a week to settle in before Mrs Anna Marie Rolon, Dean of Studies (7-10) arrives to support them with their academic transition.

Gala Arts

This event has finally returned to the Redlands calendar! The Gala Arts competition at The Concourse is held this coming Friday evening (22nd July). Get your tickets to be able to cheer on the forty or so competitors across Vocal, Instrumental, Theatre, Dance and Visual Arts in this amazing showcase of our students’ artistic talents. Tickets can be purchased here. A reminder that all students who attend as guests are required to wear full winter uniform, including blazers.

9 Into 10 Subject Selection Information Evening

Last night students and parents of Yr 9 tuned into a webinar hosted by the Dean of Studies (7-10), Mrs Anna Marie Rolon, and the Head of Teaching and Learning, Mr Matthew Bentley, to gain valuable information on the subject selection process as our Yr 9 students look ahead to Yr 10 and senior studies. At Redlands we have an academic and pastoral program which seeks to build autonomy in our middle high schoolers, to support them to become independent and agentic in their decision making. Whilst in Stage 5 there are still subjects that are mandatory, students begin to make decisions about the various pathways. In preparation for their senior studies, they have the opportunity to experiment in a variety of academic areas to build on their core skills of communication, research, writing, problem solving, making and creating. This week, Yr 9 students have been meeting with subject coordinators and teachers to discuss their choices and options ahead of making their final selections on Monday. We commend and congratulate our wonderful Yr 9 cohort on their maturity throughout this important process.

Yr 12 Holiday Workshops

During the recent Winter Break a large number of our Yr 12 students attended a range of workshops and study sessions both in person and remotely in order to further prepare themselves for their upcoming Trial examinations. Some of these sessions were run by outside agencies, such as Oxford Study Courses (OSC) and Jeddle, focussing specifically on examination technique, whilst others were run by their teachers and focussed on curriculum content and related skills. It was great to see the students so engaged in their learning after a long Term 2 and really starting to understand more fully the requirements of their respective courses. We are intending to offer similar sessions for Yr 12 students in the Term 3 and 4  break where we will also make available examination sprint sessions designed to improve student performance under timed conditions.

Volunteer at Redlands

We need new additions to our team of volunteers who assist Redlands students in Years 7-12 with exams and assessments throughout the year.We are actively recruiting for the Y12 Trial examination period from 8-18 August.

Prep, Junior and Secondary School parents, grandparents, friends and Redlanders are all welcome to express their interest.

No subject specific knowledge is required; you are simply there to read and/or write what the student dictates, and to regulate the time.

If you respect confidentiality, are reliable and punctual, patient and relaxed we would love to hear from you.

Volunteering is rewarding and will help you gain a new perspective on the Redlands experience. With your help students can achieve their full potential and you have the opportunity to see the types of assessments students sit across a range of subjects in the senior school. Our students are very appreciative of the support they are given.

If you would be interested in finding out more about helping with exams, please contact Cressida Rigney at crigney@redlands.nsw.edu.au or on 9968 9854.

COVID-19 Reminders

If away from school and able to engage in learning, students continue to be able to access class content on iLearn. If concerned about assessment work, students are to contact subject coordinators to develop a suitable plan for assessment management and submission.

If you your child tests positive for COVID-19:

  •   You must notify the school via email ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au
  •   Record positive test through Service NSW site (RAT or PCR)
  •   Isolate for 7 days
  •   Students may return to school after their 7-day isolation period finishes if they do not still have symptoms.
  •   Students do not have to return a negative RAT or PCR test before returning to school.
  •   Students should wear masks in indoor settings for 3 days after their 7-day COVID-19 positive isolation period (Days 8-10)

If your child is a Household/Close Contact:

  • You must notify the school if they are a household/close contact via email ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au
  • If they develop symptoms, they must not come to school, should self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19. If they test positive, they should self-isolate for 7 days and only return to school after 7 days when they no longer have any symptoms. If they test negative, they should stay at home until they no longer have any symptoms.
  • Students who are household/close contact must undertake a Rapid Antigen Test each morning before school and return a daily negative test on school days to attend school during that time.
  • Students in K-12 who are household/close contacts must wear a mask in all indoor settings at school for the 7 days of their household/close contact period. They do not have to wear a mask outside.
  • Students who are household/close contacts will not be able to attend overnight excursions or camps.
  • If a student has been COVID-19 positive in the previous 4 weeks, they do not need to follow these household/close contact guidelines if they become a household/close contact within that 4-week period.
  • If a student has not been in contact with the household member who has tested positive while they were infectious (either 48 hours before they have symptoms or have tested positive), then they do not need to follow these household/close contact guidelines.

A reminder that students should have a mask in their bags when they arrive at school each day as they might need to wear them for assemblies or on public transport. Students are also welcome to wear masks at school at any time if they wish.

We will communicate any further updates to the advice when it is made available. We thank you for your continued support during this time.

Year 10

Welcome Back to Term 3

It’s been an exciting return for Yr 10 as they started this week jumping right back into a regular school day, the Term 3 Mathematics Assessment and a Coaching Conversation with their Tutor. Students have time Friday morning to reflect on their Semester 1 Report, identify a focus area for Semester 2 and use iGrow data to note trends in their academics, effort and participation.

Last term rounded out with the End of Term 2 Assembly with two impressive and polished masters of ceremonies, Alissandra Braden and Connor Ikin.  Alissa and Connor stepped up as fantastic leaders, prepared a smooth dialogue and led by example for their peers who may present in future assemblies. Well done to both students.

We will shortly say “see you soon” to our Winter School students who head down to High Country Campus and begin their on snow experience next week. Head of Secondary School, Deans and Year Advisors will be visiting students throughout the term and in communication with the Head of Outdoor Education, Mr Edward Atkins, and the Winter School staff to support students in this incredible experience.

Have a wonderful term Yr 10 Winter Schoolers:

Year 8

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to Term 3 – 10 weeks of busy and exciting activities lie ahead  It has been wonderful to watch our cohort reconnect with one another this week after the three week break, relaxed and ready to delve into their classes. Yr 8 certainly hit the ground running, with half of Wednesday dedicated to ASS testing, which they approached with their usual diligence and positivity.

Last term concluded with an End of Term 2 Assembly for Yts 7-9, with two impressive and polished masters of ceremonies, Yr 8 students Zara Anderson and Samuel Harris. Both students presented to their peers in a polished and engaging manner, and are to be congratulated.

In Tutor Time on Friday, Tutors will have one to one Connection Conversations to prepare students for Semester 2. These conversations will be student led and will provide students with the opportunity to articulate their goals for the semester. The aim of this session is for students to understand the value of process (habit) based goals, to draw connections between their goals, processes and their Effort Tracking, and to critically reflect on their strengths as well as areas for further growth and self management.

Student Arrivals and Departures

Welcome to our two new students Tallis Hill and Tilde Heiderg Kjaer and their families. Our Yr 7 students have already been very supportive and welcoming to both Tallis and Tilde. At the end of Term 2 we farewelled Kelly Sullivan (returning to the U.S.) and Molly Ashcroft (returning to the UK). I am regularly heartened by the way Redlands welcomes new students into our community, and I do see it as one of our signature strengths. Yr 7 have certainly rallied to ensure the girls make a seamless transition.

Student Achievements

Finn Gurney is competing in All Schools Cross Country this Friday. This is a wonderful achievement and we wish Finn every success on Friday.

Snowsports Interschools and Redlands Cup

This is a reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School during or at the end of Term 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by cob tomorrow Friday 22 July.

As per the 2022 Schedule of Fees emailed to all families in December last year, there will be fees in lieu payable for any notices of departure received after this date.

Families who are planning on leaving the School during or at the end of Term 3 were required to give notice by Friday 24 June.

Maths Week

Monday 25-29 July

Next week Prep is celebrating Maths Week. The aim of Maths Week is to inspire, engage and instil a passion for learning Mathematics. Over the course of the week, students will participate in a range of hands-on learning experiences to think deeply about mathematical concepts. On Monday, students will take part in a Maths incursion run by Inquisitive Minds where they will be solving problems and making structures. During Tuesday to Thursday, each class will receive a problem of the day and work together to practise different problem-solving strategies.

On Friday, we warmly invite parents into the classrooms to join in the fun and play some Maths games between 8:30 and 9:00 am. It will be a great opportunity to see how Mathematics is taught here at Redlands and take part in meaningful games which can be played at home too.

During Maths Week, I encourage families to talk about all things Mathematics – It could be as simple counting the number of steps from the car to the house or timing how long it takes to get to school each morning. Please keep an eye out for the Maths Week display at Prep Reception to see some of the interactive tasks and problems for each day. It will be a great week full of numbers and problems and look forward to having parents join us the classroom for some Mathematics learning.

Junior Campus Cybersafety Seminar with ySafe

Our Yrs 1 and 2 students will be participating in ysafe sessions during the day as well. These sessions will be age-appropriate story-based learning activities. The concepts of the internet and its interconnectedness will be introduced, and students will learn about the challenges, risks, and benefits of using technology in their everyday lives with a focus on students’ identification of safe, trusted adults and help seeking behaviours.

Lunchtime Wellbeing Activities

We are all very excited to be launching our lunchtime wellbeing activities next week. The students have been given all the information about where and how to attend these activities. As you can imagine, their excitement levels are contagious!

Please remember these are voluntary activities for students who may like to do something different at lunchtimes. Students don’t have to attend every week, nor do they have to stay the entire time. Here are a few guidelines that were shared with Prep students today in Assembly:

  • All activities will take place second half of lunch (except for Year 2 Chess Club)
  • Sign-up sheets for Year 2 Chess can be found in Reception on Friday and Madame Merlot will be supervising this activity. She will try her best to ensure all those who sign up are given a chance to attend throughout the term
  • Respectful and polite behaviour is always expected
  • Children will be required to pack up their activities when asked to at the conclusion of the activity.

Redlands Cup Snowsports Competition

During the school holidays, Rosie Dasilva and Mia Taylor travelled to Thredbo to participate in the 25th Redlands Cup Ski Race. With the race being cancelled in 2020 and 2021, it was their first official ski race!

A fantastic achievement for both Rosie and Mia. A special congratulations to Rosie, who placed 3rd in the Division 6 Female Alpine race.

After School Extra Curricular Prep Sport Program

Our Term 3 after school sports program gets under way this week and we are looking forward to another term of fun sessions and development of skill. For our new parents, the after school program is in addition to the normal PE sport program run during school hours. Just a reminder to please check the Prep Pulse page from 12pm for updated wet weather information. Engage notifications will also be sent out at 12pm if any sport is cancelled.

We are so thrilled that the afters chool sport has sparked so much interest and it has grown incredibly fast since returning to campus after remote learning. Parents have requested more sport choices and for an increase in the numbers of spots available. As previously communicated, due to limited facilities and regulations of staff to student ratios with our providers, we are unable to grow the program capacity. The good news is that the providers we use also offer external programs across other days off site. If you would like specific contact details for Hot Shots Tennis, Norths Basketball or Aussie Gems, please email presportadmin@redlands.nsw.edu.au for details.

We understand and appreciate that the registration process has had its difficulties in these early stages, so like any program, we will be reviewing the processes to help create a more equitable and fair registration process in the future.

Parent Teacher Conversations

By now all our families would have received their Semester 1 School report. Reports are a formal way to capture a ‘snapshot’ in time of where students are at with their learning using NSW syllabus outcomes to guide the process. Reports also aim to provide families with the next steps in their child’s learning journey in a particular stage.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of your child’s report, please contact your child’s class teacher  or specialist directly by Friday 12 August to organise a 15 minute meeting to discuss. Thank you.

The Senior students will know visit the Lucy Hill Library every week. Please remember to return library books so the students can borrow another.  Each student is required to have a library bag to borrow books. This special bag ensures the books are kept in good condition for years to some.

Music Performance – Jam on Toast

On Wednesday 27 July, all Senior and Transition Gold students will attend a performance from Jam on Toast, which was created by Jamie Madsen, a passionate music educator, composer and performer. The music from his Jam on Toast project came about from years teaching music in the classroom to young children, adding his own original repertoire of songs, dances and creative activities to his programming. With a focus on creative thinking Jamie incorporates a unique blend of approaches to music education. The music, dances and recipes from Jamie, have been designed to inspire a love of music with children and an awareness of musical concepts.

We are so thrilled that the after school sport has sparked so much interest and it has grown incredibly fast since returning to school after remote learning.

Term 4 Departure Notice

This is a reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School during or at the end of Term 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by cob tomorrow Friday 22 July.

As per the 2022 Schedule of Fees emailed to all families in December last year, there will be fees in lieu payable for any notices of departure received after this date.

Families who are planning on leaving the School during or at the end of Term 3 were required to give notice by Friday 24 June.

For further enquiries, please contact registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

I look forward to seeing all of you over the weekend and the opportunity to see our students play against a strong rival in Scots All Saints.

Fitness Centre

With the start of Term 3, we now begin to see the transition between our Winter Rep. Sports and our Summer Season. This period is key for our Summer Sports athletes to begin preparing their bodies for the rigors of a full season and the Fitness Centre is a key space to fully utilise. Whether Rowing, Basketball or any of the other options for Summer, students must be physically prepared. The Fitness Centre is available to all students across the Term 3 Period with sessions tailored towards developing speed, fundamental movements, and power.

All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday through to Friday starting promptly at 6:30am and finishing by 7:45am. These sessions are for all Age-Groups and all Sports, so every student is encouraged to bring a mate along with them to the sessions.

Students are asked to make sure they sign in with one of the S/C Coaches or Mr Jack Gooding directly upon entering the space.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific

General Sport Information

Wet Weather

If training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 8-12)
In order to limit student mixing indoors, Students in Year 8-12 who are dismissed at the end of Period 5 are required to go directly home. Sport coaches and Redlands staff will supervise their COVID-safe departure.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 7)
In the event that year 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.20pm and participate in sport based activities.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

Junior Sport

Welcome to Term 3, we hope you and your family enjoyed the holidays despite the inclement weather. We had a large number of Junior School students involved in Snowsports over the break as well as participating in the Redlands Cup and was great to hear that our students were great ambassadors for the school on and off the snow. Thank you to our Junior School teachers and staff who assisted over the 10 days. We wish those students who progress to state championships the best of luck in their preparation.

We have a very busy term with the winter sport season for Rugby and Football wrapping up in three weeks, our girls AFL season commencing this week, our Athletics Carnival this term as well as Winter Football Gala day in August.

Last week all Junior School families would have received a detailed note outlining the term ahead for both Representative Sport and Non-Representative Sport. The information and links within this note will assist you over the next 10 weeks so please make this your first reference for any questions you may have. A few important reminders can be found below.

2022 Sport Information Booklet for Families

For all Sport information regarding what sports we offer when, how to navigate our documents, as well as information on Uniforms and Carnivals please refer to our Parent Information Booklets.

Term 4 Summer Sport Registration

Junior School families would also have received an Engage notice for them to select their child’s Term 4 Summer Sport preference. Within 24 hours we have 250 registrations which is great. If you have not done so already can you please complete this form.

Term 4 Summer Sport Registration

Sport Calendar

We have a Sport Calendar for each Term. To view the 2022 Term 3 Sports Calendar please click here

Athletics Carnival

All students will be participating in this carnival on Wednesday 10 August in both track and field events. More information will be sent closer to the date. Students have completed a unit of work in PE classes this term across all field events and track preparation with finalists for Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Put advertised closer to the date. Highlights video from previous carnival and what to expect can be viewed here.

Winter Gala Day

We will again be running our Winter Football Gala Day (Saturday 20 August) for all students regardless if you play Football and or Sport for Redlands. Students represent their houses in Football games in a one off winner takes all gala day. Highlights video from previous gala day can be viewed here.

Wednesday Sport

Normal Wednesday Winter Sport resumes on Wednesday 20 July. If you need a reminder as to what your child has selected for their Winter Sport choice as well as team selections please refer to the Term 3 Winter Sport lists. These sports will continue until the last week of term with the exception of Rugby and Football which will finish their season on Saturday 6 August. For timings and venues for all Wednesday sport please refer to the Winter Sport Training Schedule. Please remember if you are picking up your child directly from the venue you must be there before the returning bus leaves for the journey back to school. Please note these buses will not wait for late parents and no child can be left at the venue for late location pick-ups. All sports this term will finish and return students back to school at regular finish time of 3:20pm, traffic dependent with the exception of Gymnastics.

Wet Weather

In the case of wet weather on a Wednesday, updates will be posted on our Wet Weather Pulse page. If you pick your child up directly at the venue, please refer to this page prior to going to ensure that they are at the venue as alternative plans may have been made depending on the location, weather and provider.

Representative Sport Absences

If your child is unable to attend a training session or Saturday fixture, please complete our Sports Absence form located on Pulse. This will allow Sports department staff and coaches to view prior and post fixtures and allow for another student to be contacted to fill in to make up numbers. As mentioned above, unexplained absences will affect your child’s gradings. As Representative Sport is not compulsory at Redlands, we expect all students who have committed to a team, commit to each game and training session for the duration of the season. Absences due to ‘club’ commitments are not permitted.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through a note requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Want to Try a New Sport?

Manly Warringah Softball Association (MWSA) will soon be hosting its popular Come & Try Teeball + Softball Days at Abbott Road Diamonds, North Curl Curl.

Gala Arts

This week is the inaugural Gala Arts. Gala Arts is the School’s Annual Creative and Performing Arts Festival, which showcases the outstanding and diverse talents of Redlands students from Years 7 to 12. The Gala Arts Festival was created to showcase the creative talents of Redlands students, whilst at the same time promoting Inter-House competition and House spirit. Students perform in Dance, Instrumental, Theatre and Vocal categories, and Visual Art photography works portraying this year’s theme of Shadows will be on display in the foyer. The winners of each category will be announced at the event.

Tickets are now available via the Concourse website. Click the link below to buy tickets now.

Classes are going well. If you want to enrol your child please contact drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Some classes are at capacity and have a waitlist.

Music

Junior Music Festival is BACK! …in Black.

Actually, it’s back in full and resplendent colour and we simply can not wait to see our Years 3-6 students take to the stage this term in Dunnet Hall for their Annual Spectacular on Thursday 4 August at 4:30pm.

In their curriculum Music lessons and cocurricular ensembles, students have been learning repertoire relating to our theme for 2022 – ‘School of Rock’ – and they are very excited to be performing at this event!

Tickets will be available through Trybooking from 8pm this evening until Tuesday 2 August. Please be advised that Junior School students DO NOT need a ticket. This is a free event however due to venue size limitations and our COVID Response seating restrictions, each family may only reserve one ticket. Please respect this guidance which will allow all families the chance to watch their child perform. This performance will be filmed and access to this recording will be distributed following the Festival.

At the other end of the journey, this evening is also a chance to farewell our Yr 12 cohort – honouring them likewise for their contributions to both music and their peers in the program throughout their Redlands journey.

Welcome New Staff

Gloriously dispelling any notion of a decline in Music engagement post-COVID, our Redlands Private Tuition stream numbers are at a record high with more than 430 students each week participating in private music lessons, and waiting lists burgeoning. To this end, we are delighted to welcome pianist, Mr Tony Lee to our team of world-class Music Tutors and Accompanists.

Tony is a highly experienced piano teacher and accompanist and is objectively regarded as one of Australia’s finest pianists. Sydney-born but educated in Europe, Tony was an artist in residence at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Belgium, working the renowned Portuguese-Swiss pianist, Maria-João Pires. He is one of the most highly awarded pianists in Australia and is the First Prizewinner of the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, Australian National Piano Award, John Allison Sydney Eisteddfod Scholarship, and was furthermore named the ‘Best Australian Pianist’ at the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2016.

We are delighted to have Tony with us and he too is very much looking forward to working with the students and team at Redlands.

Join and ensemble? Learn an instrument?

The start of each new semester is a fantastic window to join an ensemble or take up an instrument if it’s been on your to do list! We have enjoyed meeting dozens of new ensemble members this week on the Senior Campus and our Junior ensembles will welcome new intake straight after Junior Music Festival. Opportunity exists for new members to jump on board across all ensembles. If you would like to join choir, band or small ensemble, take musicianship classes or have private lessons on a new instrument, reach out to the Music office for direct assistance, or simply sign up using the electronic forms on Pulse and we will help you launch your journey.

2022 Elective Music Showcases

These experiences in turn guide student growth as musicians from early High School and into their senior-most years within the HSC or the IB Course and into the industry and real world beyond.

As the culmination of their year’s work and by way of assessment, all elective students present a showcase performance in the Edwards Auditorium each year for parents and friends.
