Issue 20 2020 - 25 Jun 2020

From the Principal

As we come to the end of the semester, I want to sincerely thank all parents and carers for your incredible support during what has been an unprecedented time for us all. I have greatly appreciated the constructive and valuable feedback we received throughout, along with words of support and encouragement to our staff at just the right time. There have naturally been a range of perspectives and differing viewpoints to consider; however, what has impressed me most is the trust that has been evident, with the knowledge that we will always make decisions in the best interest of all members of our school community.

In my individual meetings with staff I am often asked how I am finding the School. My consistent response has been that our strength of community has shone through. I continue to be impressed by the positive and natural interactions between the students and the affection that they and the staff have for our School. This was clearly evident as we returned to On-Campus Learning this term and the opening of the New Learning Hub has certainly had an additional positive impact.

We are looking forward to next term when competitive sporting fixtures will recommence for both the Secondary School ISA and Junior School IPSHA programs. Both organisations are working with schools on detailed risk management plans, including when spectators will be able to attend fixtures, in what numbers and the relevant procedures.

Our Critical Incident Management Team will be reviewing our Covid-19 risk management plan and procedures during the holiday period and communication will be sent to all families prior to the start of Term 3, outlining any changes to our practices. If we continue to experience the current very low levels of community transmission in NSW, this will give us further confidence in moving forward.

In wonderful recognition of the Cultures of Thinking practices that are embedded in the School through our Redlands Learning Platform, Music teacher Mrs Amy Richardson and Redlands feature in the new publication, The Power of Making Thinking Visible: Practices to Engage and Empower all Learners by Ron Ritchhart and Mark Church. In the book Amy outlines how she used the What? So What? Now What? Thinking Routine with her Year 11 Music class. The publication from the Harvard Project Zero program has an international audience and our inclusion in the book will contribute to the reputational profile of the School at a local and international level.

In Mr Corcoran’s Note Day article this week, you will find information regarding changes to the Leadership Model for our Year 12 2021 cohort. The model to be trialled from Term 4 this year, retains key traditional leadership positions whilst providing more opportunities for students and empowering the entire cohort. The changes have been informed by key community feedback, including past Year 12 Exit Surveys.

During the upcoming break there will be a series of workshops running for our Year 12 HSC and IB students and I thank our staff for their commitment in providing this additional support for our students during what has been a challenging year for them. They will no doubt benefit from this extra assistance as they look ahead to trial examinations in Week 3 and 4 of next term.

I trust that you will all find some time to be together with family and friends this holiday break, and that it may be a time of recharge, refreshment and renewal.

Innovative Design in the New Learning Hub

Last week I had the opportunity to visit the Innovative Design area of the New Learning Hub. This space is buzzing with activity from Digital Technology and Textiles through to Laser Cutting and 3D printing using state of the art machinery.

Flexible learning spaces and shop window fronts allow students work to be displayed. Classrooms have sliding doors so they can be open and closed for larger or smaller groups. Surfaces are writable allowing students to write and record their processes and progress made. Furniture can be rearranged to provide a dynamic learning environment for both individual and collaborative learning.

“Students have opportunities to engage with new processes and be inspired by their peers’ work. This is encouraged by open learning spaces of transition and transparency, such as exhibition shop front windows for Textiles, IT and Design and Technology projects”. Alannah Nastase, Coordinator of Innovative Design.

Let Your Light Shine on Education

Thank you to all members of our community, parents, staff and Alumni who have already contributed towards the Class of 2020 Legacy Gift and supported this wonderful student-led initiative.

This cohort have decided to purchase a ping pong table to be situated in the green space around the New Learning Hub and to contribute funds to the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund, continuing the legacy started by the Class of 2019.

Students have invited the entire Redlands community, including our Redlands Alumni and staff, to support them in their fundraising effort. If you wish to join the Yr 12 students in their efforts, please click here.

Head of Secondary School

Yr 12 Student Leadership Model 2020-2021

Over the first half of this year, we have been developing an updated Yr 12 Leadership Model which we have communicated to all staff and current Yr 11 students this week. This model has been born out of months of review and feedback from members of the Executive, the Secondary School Leadership team, key staff (including the current Yr 11 Year Advisors and the University and Careers Advisor), current students and past students. It has also been informed by data collected from recent Yr 12 Student Exit Surveys. While this review has confirmed the many strengths of our student leadership system, it has also revealed some areas for improvement which we have attempted to address with this updated model.

Yr 12 students have a significant responsibility as leaders in the Secondary School. They act as role models to all students across both the Junior and Senior Campuses; they have a substantial impact in creating a positive and supportive culture at school; they can influence people and policies and affect productive change; and they serve the Redlands community in many and varied ways.

At the heart of the Redlands leadership model are the values of servant leadership as articulated in Robert Greenleaf’s book, Servant Leadership. Yr 12 students should strive to be servant leaders whose true leadership in the community can be seen in their service to others. Servant leadership is an inherent principle in our Anglican ethos as illustrated in the Gospel of John 13:16 where Jesus washes his disciples’ feet and says to them, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.” Our student leaders are also authentic leaders who live the values of the School and whose actions speak louder than their words. In addition, they work collectively and collaboratively with each other and with teachers and staff to create a positive culture across the School.

We regularly review our Yr 12 student leadership model with the aim of ensuring it is true to the principles of servant, authentic and collaborative leadership, as well as to the core values of the School. In recent years, we have received feedback from senior students, parents and staff that the current model limits the opportunity for Yr 12 students to “let their light shine” in terms of leadership in their last year of school by setting a limited number of Prefects at the beginning of Yr 12 who carry out duties and other responsibilities at School, thus not allowing other students the chance to illustrate their leadership potential over the course of their final year at the School.

Therefore, for 2020-2021 we will be trialling an altered Prefect model. The school-wide leadership positions of School, Arts, Sports, Service, Environment and House Captains will remain the same and similar selection processes for these positions will take place as in previous years during Term 3 (2020). In addition, individual sport and activity captains will also be the same and selected via similar processes by the end of Term 3 (2020). These positions will be announced to the community at the end of Term 3 (2020) in the same manner as previous years.

However, School Prefect positions will not be finalised at the end of Term 3 (2020). Instead, all Yr 12 students will have the opportunity to opt in to be considered for a School Prefect position over the duration of Yr 12 (from Term 3 2020 – Term 3 2021). Any student who opts in to be considered for School Prefect will have the opportunity to take on the leadership responsibilities of a School Prefect over their final year of School, such as gate duties and assisting in assemblies. Then, towards the end of Yr 12 (Term 2 or 3 2021 – final timing to be decided), all students who have opted in to be considered for School Prefect and continued with the role over the course of the year will submit a written application for final confirmation of School Prefect based on their actions over this final year of schooling. Students who apply for School Prefect will be judged based on published criteria and expectations for the role. There will not be a set number of students who are confirmed as School Prefects towards the end of Yr 12; instead, the final number of students who are confirmed as School Prefects will be based on their merit and if they have successfully met the published criteria.

We believe that this model will allow all Yr 12 students the opportunity to illustrate their leadership over the course of Yr 12 and show their worthiness as a potential School Prefect, based on their actions over this final year of their schooling. In addition, this model better exemplifies the School’s values of “Responsibility” and “Fairness” by allowing all students the opportunity to take on the responsibilities of leadership in their final year of schooling and be judged by their actions over the course of the year. We will review this model throughout 2020 and 2021 before determining if and how it might continue in future years, and we look forward to hearing student, parent and staff feedback on this model in the days, weeks and months ahead.

We hope this updated Yr 12 Leadership Model will create more opportunities, more inclusiveness and more connectedness for the Class of 2021 and we look forward to seeing them shine as school leaders in the months ahead.

Gala Arts Update

We know that one of the biggest disappointments for students during this Covid-19 pandemic has been the cancellation, alteration or postponement of the cocurricular activities and events in which they passionately participate. A key focus for the Secondary School Leadership team and other key staff from Sports and Cocurricular areas of the School over the past few months has been evaluating if, how and when we might be able to reschedule these events. Unfortunately, due to limitations imposed by venues, the calendar and Covid-19 restrictions, this has been quite challenging. However, we have been pleased to see many of these activities start up in recent weeks and we hope to see more performances and competitions, even in altered forms, in the weeks ahead.

With this in mind, we are very excited to be able to announce that our annual Gala Arts House competition has been rescheduled for next term, albeit in a modified format, at venues at School over the weekend of 19-20 September. The event will take place as separate finals for the different artistic categories and be professionally filmed and edited for release in Term 4. Dependent on Covid-19 restrictions at the time, there may be an opportunity to allow a limited audience but this decision is yet to be determined. Although this year’s Gala Arts will be different from the regular event, we hope it will nevertheless allow for a wonderful celebration of House spirit and will showcase the amazing talent in the Arts we have at Redlands. Student finalists for this year’s Gala Arts Competition will be announced today.

We are still yet to make a final determination on this year’s School musical and we hope to give an update on this event by the beginning of next term.

Staffing Update

We would like to thank Ms Ebony Stewart for all of her efforts in the HSIE Department over the first semester in her temporary position. She will not be leaving us for long as she will be returning to the HSIE Department to cover Ms Abby Walker’s maternity leave from the middle of Term 3.

We are pleased to welcome Mr Tobias Horan to the HSIE Department from the beginning of next term. Mr Horan is an experienced teacher who has taught at independent schools in Sydney and internationally.

In addition, Ms Elizabeth Scott has taken leave until the end of Term 3 and we welcome Ms Danielle Bunday to the Science Department to cover for her. Ms Bunday has experience teaching Science in the UK.

Finally, Ms Melissa Dooley has resigned from her position in the English Department from the end of Term 2 and we thank her for her service to the School and wish her well in her future pursuits. We are pleased to confirm Ms Lucienne Willis will continue in an ongoing role in English moving forward.

Reports Update

Students and parents in some Year Groups have begun to receive their Semester 1 reports over the past few weeks. We hope these reports will give important and valuable feedback to students as they prepare for the second half of the school year. The remainder of Semester 1 reports will be available for parents to access via Redlands Pulse either later this week or next week.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal.

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact Lisa Ole (Coordinator of Learning Support K-12) lole@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Victoria Butler who won the 2020 NSW Hanyu Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition. In August, Victoria will represent NSW to compete against winners and runners up from other states in the national round of this competition, with the winner of this then representing Australia against the rest of the world.

Semester 1 Reflection

It has certainly been a challenging first semester as we have all dealt with the uncertainty, worry and disruption cause by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, despite this, in many ways for me it has also been the most rewarding and heartening semester during my tenure at Redlands as I have once again seen our community of students, staff and parents pull together in the most supportive, compassionate and positive ways. I have been so proud of the students and how they have faced these challenges. In a recent interview for a prospective student to the School, I was asked by a parent about what I enjoyed most about my role. After a brief reflection, I told this prospective parent that the privilege of working with these young people and seeing how they face the challenges that life can sometimes throw at them, inspires me and gives me hope for the future.

I hope the students and you are able to have a safe, relaxing and nourishing break, and we look forward to seeing the students returning refreshed and ready for Semester 2 on Tuesday 21 July.

Holiday Break

Mr Walker and I would like to extend our best wishes to Yr 11 students and families for a well-deserved end of semester break. It has been, without doubt, a most unusual term and we commend students for the resilience and responsibility that they have shown, particularly during the remote learning period. Students are certainly ready for some much needed R&R after such a busy term. We hope the three week break will allow students time to re-energise and spend time with family and friends. It is hoped that students will find time to consolidate the term’s learning through study and creating summary notes. Yr 12 Leadership Opportunities

It was with much excitement that Mr Corcoran addressed our Yr 11 cohort to discuss the new leadership initiative for 2020-2021. The School regularly evaluates the opportunities for students and in response to recent feedback, as well as best practice, changes have been made to our Yr 12 leadership model. Students can refer to the Leadership manual which is available on our iLearn Pastoral page for further information. I am thrilled that students will have the opportunity to opt in for leadership next year and I encourage all students to embrace this new opportunity.

Year 10

What a Term!

Yr 10 students have shown remarkable strength and flexibility over this semester, with the need to switch abruptly to remote learning and then back again to on-campus learning. On top of that they have needed to make important decisions regarding the choice of program and subjects for Yrs 11 and 12. Despite all of this, many have been full of smiles around the school and have taken everything in their stride. I am sure everyone is looking forward to a break over the next three weeks, hopefully using the time to get away from their desks and screens, and spend time with friends and family.

Tony and I, and all the Yr 10 Tutors, wish you and your family a restful and happy break away from the school routine and we look forward to welcoming all the students back at the start of Semester 2.

Reports and Yr 9 Parent Student Teacher Interviews

Yr 9 reports are now available to parents and students. We hope that Yr 9 Parent Student Teacher Interviews provided a great opportunity to reflect on the report and set measurable goals for Semester 2. At the start of Term 3, students will meet individually with Tutors to reflect on progress and discuss student personal goals. We appreciate your support at home when engaging in conversations with your child. If you’re reading tips and hints on how to support your child in developing their personal study habits, please visit the Tips and Hints for Parents via Study Skills Handbook (username: Redlands | password: 68results) provides some easy to implement strategies.

ISA Achievements

A special congratulations to Eloise Trueman and Freya Gait on being recognised for their involvement as representative players for ISA Hockey 16 Years and Under in 2020. Well done ladies on another year of competition at this high level.

Yr 9 Class Visits

Recently it has been a delight to join Ms Moore’s Mathematics and Ms Wilson’s English classes. I enjoyed hearing about the Yr 9 Maths Data project and areas students had selected to investigate ranging from tracking NRL results, identifying COVID-19 trends, to exploring relationships between screen time and physical activity. Ms Wilson’s class shared poetry written in response to the current Black Lives Matter movement. Their poetry was raw, authentic, empathetic and real – students truly put their hearts on the page and evoked a sense of hope for the future. Thank you to Oliver Kesby, Sara Kumpulainen, Claudia Lalich, Harry Wilkes, Luke Gautheron and Kieran Alexandratos for sharing their work with the class.

Pastoral Care – Social Emotional Learning

This week, Yr 9 engaged in an activity which promoted relationship skills, self and social awareness. Through the format of speed dating, the activity guided students through thinking about what brings passion and purpose to their lives. Sharing experiences helped them reflect more deeply on why they love these things and how they gain energy from them. Listening to others describe how they found their passions and purposes aimed to inspire others who are less sure about their own interests. Discussing passions also promoted a shared feeling of confidence and happiness. Tutors have reported that students enjoyed the opportunity to take the perspective of others to understand their interests and develop relationships. Included are some pictures of Dumolo Blue and McDouall Blue engaged in energetic discussion.

A Final Note

Wishing you all a happy and safe break. We hope the mid-year holidays provide a great opportunity for students to rest, relax and prepare for Term 3. We look forward to hearing about your holiday activities when school returns on Tuesday 21 July.

Year 8

Students have done an incredible job this term adjusting from remote learning back to the school environment. They have spent the last few weeks in Tutor focusing on their own character strengths, friendship circles and empathy with a reflection on recent events in the world and at this time in their own educational journey. This week, the additional space for students to run around and play organised games on the Junior Campus at lunch has been a wonderful way for them to get out some extra energy and connect with their peers.

Photos are a quick snapshot of a few Tutor activities and PDHPE activities this week to celebrate the end of term.

While students have demonstrated several strong character strengths in and out of the classroom these last few weeks, there has been a lot impacting the development of this incredible group of young people as a Yr 8 student. Please note the School TV Special Report on checking in with your teen at this time and never hesitate to contact your child’s Tutor or Year Advisor if there are any concerns.

Wishing everyone a wonderful and restful term break!

Yr 8 Parent Teacher Night

Wednesday 5 August is Yr 8 Parent Teacher Night. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet all of your child’s teachers and to hear how your child is going in each subject. If you do have further concerns that may not be addressed in the allotted 5 minute timeslot, please contact the specific teacher individually to set up an additional conversation.

Blazer Pick-Up

If students earned a pocket for a Summer Sport at the end of Term 1, they should bring their pocket certificate and their blazer to be embroidered to the Front Terraces on Friday 26 June (tomorrow) at the following times:

Yrs 7, 8 and 9

School TV Special Report: Wellbeing Checklist for Secondary

Adolescents are considered to be more at risk for anxiety and other disorders that may affect their mood, thinking or behaviour. If any unusual behaviour lasts for more than a few weeks, there may be cause for concern and it is important to seek additional support as soon as possible. This link also provides additional resources for parents around student anxiety, depression, nutrition, sleep, physical activity, mindfulness and positive parenting.

Special Report: Physical Activity and Exercise

As we embark on school holidays, it is a timely reminder of how important physical activity will be over this period.

Physical activity and exercise are not only vital to a child’s overall development but it has so many other benefits. With children spending more time on computers being sedentary, it is even more important to get kids moving more. As well as maintaining a healthy weight, it also improves concentration by helping to establish connections between different parts of the brain. It helps kids develop fundamental movement skills impacting positively on their confidence, self-esteem and ability to develop social skills. On an emotional level, it reduces stress and anxiety while improving posture and sleep. Physical activity and exercise are good for your child’s health, now and in the future. Parents should encourage their kids to move or play sport at every opportunity – in and out of school. Click here for the special report.

Yr 7 Mathematics

Students were working on a class challenge involving simplifying algebraic expressions. Each student was responsible for an individual question and then they had to combine their working as a group. This particular group was the winner of the class challenge. Congratulations!

To all of our students and families, take care, continue to follow the COVID-19 advice and enjoy time with your loved ones over the break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next term.

Where There’s a Will There’s a Way

This well-known proverb is often used to say that if someone has the desire and determination to do something, they would find a way to make it happen. In many ways, this could possibly be the mantra for the first half of 2020 as we all have had to think more creatively, adapt to new scenarios and pivot in ways that we may never have considered before. An exciting part of this next period of time will be to critically assess what changes we made that we might continue with as we return to both full schooling and in our everyday lives.

Many of these personal attributes and dispositions are captured in the learner attributes embodied within Redlands Three Pillars of Aspiration for all students, as outlined in our Redlands Learning Platform, in our support of their life-readiness beyond school.

As you look through the list of 21st Century competencies described in this overview, without question our students (and staff) have had to demonstrate and experience many of these ways of thinking and being during this unique semester. It might be a great holiday conversation at home to go through these and find examples where your children (and perhaps you) have had to demonstrate these attributes over this past semester?

As the semester draws to a close, it is very important for me to thank and acknowledge the support, efforts and flexibility of parents, students and of course our staff as we have all faced this new situation in our lives for the first time, with both an open mind and a growth mindset. I also encourage students, staff and families to take time for rest as these times away from school allow us to be at our very best when we are here. Rest, in whatever sense, is different for each of us which I acknowledge and hope that the mid-year break allows everyone to recharge.

Semester 1 Reports

We are expecting Junior School student reports to be available to parents via Redlands Pulse at the end of next week. Notification will be sent when they have been uploaded for you to access. Back copies of your son or daughter’s reports are also available via Redlands Pulse. To access the reports parents will need their Redlands Pulse username and password. Parents requiring assistance with their username or password should email pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au as soon as possible.

Do take some time over the break to read through it with your child and acknowledge and celebrate areas of growth and progress. As students return for Term 3, their class teachers will also spend time with your child looking at aspects of goal setting for the second semester, which they will then share with you at the Student-Led Conferences next term.

For more information, please click here.

Student Wellbeing Vodcast

Our Junior Campus Dean of Students, Mrs Kourakis, has created a highly informative wellbeing vodcast which summarises the themes that have been covered over the term as well as some parenting tips to support children’s worry. The vodcast is available from Redlands Pulse by clicking this link.

I encourage families to watch this vodcast (a podcast with video content) over the break and would also suggest parts of it may be good to watch with your child.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2020

For over 30 years, International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), have taken place in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa. ICAS is an initiative of Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), a not for profit organisation owned by the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

At Redlands, it is optional for Junior School students sit these tests in Term 3. Assessments occur during class time within a supervised area of the Junior School. No particular preparation is required and all students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly, their total score as well as their average compared with the rest of the students in the state/region.

For additional information and registration details, please read the letter on Redlands Pulse and any questions should be directed to the Dean of Administration, Ms Atkins.

Lost Property

The shift to students wearing PE attire on days that they have PE and not having to change from school uniform and back has already seen a noticeable drop in lost property. That said, we are still finding belongings that are unnamed. Over the holiday, please ask your child to go through uniform items and make sure everything is labelled. This is certainly a job that they can do themselves and if they find something that belongs to another student, please do return it to the Junior School office.

Semester 2 Calendar

Towards the end of the holiday break, an updated Semester 2 Junior School calendar will be placed on Redlands Pulse after we have reviewed the current calendar in relation to the government health guidelines and restrictions. Key changes will be outlined in my Term 3 letter which will also be sent out before term recommences on Tuesday 21 July.

Head of Preparatory School

As the term draws to a close, I sit here and reflect upon my first term at Redlands. I smile as I look back on my first Zoom session to meet staff, I laugh as remember the Prep students drawing love hearts all over their iPads on our first Assembly Zoom and I admire the work by hard working staff to ensure online learning was meeting the needs of students to the best of their ability. My biggest smile comes from reflecting upon the warm welcome into the Redlands community as a whole that I have received. Thank you. After taking a breather for a few weeks, I am excited about what Term 3 will bring across the Junior Campus academically, pastorally and physically.

I had the privilege of meeting members of various Parents Associations over the last few weeks and from these meetings I discovered a common theme. After home learning, a lot of our families would like to know more about different areas of the curriculum, what they are and how we teach them with the thinking into how they can support their children at home. We have listened to this message and from next term (Week 2), we will be posting some short videos on Redlands Pulse for our families.

In response to questions regarding this term’s Wellbeing program, our Dean of Students, Ms Sam Kourakis, has produced a short vodcast, (a podcast with video), for parents to access from Redlands Pulse by clicking this link. The vodcast summarises the main ideas and social-emotional skills that we have focussed on to reinforce resilience. The vodcast also includes tips for responding to your child’s worries as well as some parent/carer resources. We hope this information helps you, at home, to support your child with consistent messages, language and understandings.

Watch this space for further information on upcoming ‘vodcasts’.

The School Executive will be meeting at the end of term to review our procedures that have been in place for COVID-19 restrictions. Changes to our Redlands guidelines will be communicated to the community by Mr Webber before Term 3. We wish to thank all parents and carers who have respected the Redlands guidelines we have had in place to ensure the health and safety or our students, staff and community.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Tiia Pyky, one of our amazing Teacher’s Assistants in Redlands House, all the best as she takes 12 months maternity leave. Tiia is a well-respected and highly loved member of the Redlands House team and we will miss her and look forward to meeting her little one soon.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a lovely break. If you end up on top of a mountain or under the stars, enjoy some down time together.

Thank you!

Wow, who can believe we are halfway through 2020! What an interesting and challenging term of fun and learning we have had, both online and in the Preschool! I would again like to thank our families for their support over this difficult time. The wonderful comments, gifts and baked goods have been very much appreciated.

Secondary Sport

Let the Games Begin!

We are pleased to announce that Redlands Sport will resume in full capacity at the beginning of Term 3. All representative and non representative training and competition activities will resume (excluding Waterpolo, which is yet to be finalised). There will be a range of protocols and requirements specific to each sport, venue or competition that all students, staff, officials and parents/spectators will need to abide by. The details of the requirements are still being finalised by each sporting organisation, venue or host school. It is clear that maintaining social distancing where possible and ensuring we maintain a high degree of personal hygiene (hand washing) will be a critical priority throughout the Term 3 Sport season. More specific details regarding Term 3 Sport protocols will be made available in the coming days. Please keep an eye on Redlands Pulse for the most up to date details related to Sport draws, trainings and protocols for Sport in a COVID-19 environment.

I would like to thank the Sports staff for their effort and commitment over the last few weeks with getting all of the details and requirements for sport up to date in such a short period.

We thank all of the parents and carers for their assistance and patience as we navigate these changes to ensure our students can continue to get valuable learning experiences through Sport at Redlands.

Athletics

We will continue with Athletics training tomorrow afternoon (Friday 26 June). This will be the last session of the term. We will be continuing with Athletics on Friday afternoons during Term 3.

Football

We have completed the trials and trainings for Term 2, and we have seen some great improvements through both the Boys and Girls Football programs! We are very much looking forward to the return to regular two trainings per week beginning Tuesday 21 July (Term 3, Week 1). The updated training schedule will be posted on Redlands Pulse – Football in the coming days, as will the Winter Football ISA Draw.

A reminder for all parents and students that Football is a representative sport and as such, Redlands Football takes priority over other commitments on Tuesday, Thursday and for the matches on Saturday. We understand that some students compete at a high level outside of school Football and these students are free to meet with Mr Kindred to discuss their loading.

Parents are reminded that if they are collecting their child/ren from training venues they need to be there prior to the supervising teachers departing the venue. If you are running late, your child/ren will be brought back to school as we are unable to leave students at the venue unsupervised.

We will be running Football training during the last week of the holidays (13-17 July). Please ensure you register for these sessions by following this link (students will need to log into Google with their school email account). There are also Speed and Strength trainings throughout the holidays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (register via the link also).

Hockey

All teams will be announced by the end of term so that we can move into team training immediately in Term 3. Further updates regarding the Term 3 training schedule and competition structure will be provided by the end of term.

A reminder that there will be Hockey Skills sessions in the last week of the holidays, please follow this link to register for these sessions.

Netball

It has been a great few weeks of Netball to see out the end of Term 2. We are excited to recommence the regular two trainings per week (Tuesday and Thursday) from the beginning of Term 3. This will see the introduction of morning trainings as well as afternoon. Each team may be training at a different time/venue to what they have been doing in Term 2. Please consult the Training Schedule on Redlands Pulse to ensure you are aware of your two training sessions.

Training will begin on the morning of Tuesday 21 July, which is the first day back on campus for students. The following teams will have training on that morning from 6.45-8.00am: Inter A, Inter B, Senior 3rds, 9B, 8A, 8B and 7B. The training schedule outlines the venues for each of these teams.

Players in the 9A team, please note your Thursday training session has moved from the afternoon to the morning. This is due to coach availability. This has been updated on the new training schedule.

Senior and Intermediate Team Selection

Unfortunately, we have not been able to run selection trials in our regular format for the Senior and Intermediate teams. This has been due to the restrictions in place that have prevented regular match play from occurring. To finalise teams, students have been selected based on their performance and coach feedback from the 2019 season, as well as through observation of skill and coach feedback during the Term 2 training sessions. There may be some flexibility for movement during next term, but we do ask that all players and parents be understanding of the current circumstances and please be ensured that this process was done in the fairest way possible for all players. These teams will be released on Redlands Pulse on Friday 26 June. All players are asked to look at this closely and ensure they attend the training sessions for their team from Week 1 of Term 3 onwards.

Holiday Netball Training

During the third week of the holidays, some Netball training sessions will run for all players. These will take place on Tuesday 14 July and Thursday 16 July. Whilst these are optional sessions, we encourage all players to attend to ensure they are conditioned and prepared for a return to play. Players are welcome to attend both sessions, or just one. Please see below for the times and venues for these sessions:

Yr 7: 9.30-10.30am, Lang Gym
Yr 8: 10.30-11.30am, Lang Gym
Yr 9: 11.30-12.30pm, Lang Gym
Yr 10: 9.30-10.30am, Dunnet Hall
Yr 11 and 12: 7.30-8.30am, Lang Gym
1st VII: 7.30-9.00am, Dunnet Hall

All players who wish to attend are asked to register via this linked Google form before the end of Term 2.

Non-Rep

Non-Rep sport will recommence in Week 1, Term 3 (Thursday 23 July). All non-Rep sport programs will continue for the first seven weeks of Term 3 before students move into their Summer Sport choices. Further details will be provided to the students registered for non-Rep by the end of the week.

Speed and Power Sessions

Over the Winter holidays, a number of Speed and Power sessions will be run from the Redlands Fitness Centre. For all students wishing to attend these sessions, please make sure to tick the appropriate dates in this form provided. Please be aware that this sign up will close at the end of the week.

On their selected dates, students will need to enter the school via Military Road as the Waters Road entrance will be closed due to constructions.

Students will need to bring their own towel and a water bottle.

Tennis

Tennis students have now been training for the past five weeks and it was pleasing to see over the weekend how many of our Tennis students have improved their Tennis skills. This week there will be no training on Saturday 27 June due to the commencement of the school holidays, students will only train in their allocated Tuesday or Thursday timeslot. Students are encouraged to book a court and play Tennis over the holiday period. There is also the option of attending the July Holiday Tennis Camps that our coaching provider, Grand Slam Tennis, are running for us. For more details and to register, please click here – Groups 3 and 4 should select the Development Camp on Monday and Tuesday and Groups 1 and 2 should select the High Performance Camp on Wednesday – Friday. Further information regarding Winter Tennis in Term 3 will be available as it comes to hand.

Winter Sport Preparation

It is definitely starting to feel real with interschool sport back in a matter of weeks. Our students are excited after completing our team trials last week, new uniforms have been purchased, boots and joggers replaced and sport is beginning to feel like normal again.

As discussed in our Sports Information Zoom sessions on Tuesday night with over 100 parents, we are building back up to interschool sport. IPSHA, the organisation that we belong to and play our Winter Sport in, has released some guidelines for our interschool sport which resumes Term 3, Saturday 25 July. I would appreciate if you can talk through these protocols with your child before the restart.

COVID 19 Protocols for IPSHA NSW Saturday Sport

  • Team kits will include hand sanitiser.
  • Each team will keep a log where a roll is marked and records against each student’s name of any persons in attendance with that student, eg: mum, grandad, etc.
  • IPSHA recommends that only one parent or guardian should attend from each family with a student playing.
  • Sharing/exchanging of personal equipment, clothing or drink bottles is not permitted.
  • Spectators are requested to comply with social distancing guidelines.
  • Match ball(s) must be wiped over with sanitiser prior to and after each fixture.
  • ‘If in Doubt, Sit it Out’ – any student, coach, official or parent who has any cold or flu like symptoms or has knowingly been in recent close contact with a person displaying said symptoms cannot attend any IPSHA NSW event.
  • Participants must be aware of and maintain proper hygiene measures: sanitise hands on arrival pre-warm up and then at the conclusion of the fixture prior to departure.
  • Do not put game equipment or your hands in your mouth. Should you need to touch your mouth you must wash and sanitise your hands first. If you need to touch your face, do so using the inside of your shirt with your finger covered by the outer side.
  • No shaking hands or contact outside of the rules of play is permitted before, during or after fixtures.
  • All visitors and providers (eg. referees, external coaches, etc) must adhere to relevant hygiene, distancing and safety requirements.

A more detailed note with the most up to date guidelines will be emailed to Redlands families in Week 1, next term.

AFL Players Wanted

This is a final call for any boy in Yr 5 or Yr 6 who would like to join our AFL Representative side as we begin our season next term. We have had a few withdrawals and are looking for boys to change from their non-Rep sport for next term to come across into AFL. There is a Saturday commitment to this with matches and if you would like for your son to join our side please email me ASAP. More information relating to AFL can be found here.

Term 4 Summer Sport Selection

As we approach the end of Term 2, there is some planning and forecasting to be completed by the Sports Department over the break. As you may be aware, our Winter Sport will end in Week 6 of Term 3 and, almost immediately, we will roll over to Summer Sport preparation for the remainder of the term with trials and internal games taking place both during Sport time on Wednesdays and on Saturdays for our representative sports program.

While it may seem early, considering we have not even recommenced our Winter Sport, I require all families to submit your initial request for your child’s Term 4 Summer Sport selection. The aim is to collate all the responses and get them back to you for review to you over the upcoming break so parents can make any final changes to them before I have to lodge them.

On Monday, an email was sent to all families asking you to please complete this form at your earliest convenience. We are accepting submissions now with over 200 received and will close 5.00pm on Friday 26 June. The data (numbers of students per sport) that we receive will be used to work out how many teams we submit to our competition. Information with more details to each sport that may be of assistance to you in making your selection can be found here.

Hot Shots/Young Guns July Holiday Camps

During the upcoming July holidays, our Tennis provider, Grand Slam Tennis, are offering July school holiday Tennis Camps. Interested students who are in Redlands Junior School are encouraged to attend the engaging and enjoyable extended training sessions. There are two camps over two weeks:

  • Hot Shots Camp – suitable for all ages and standards
  • Young Guns Camp – suitable for 8-12 years who currently/have played in a Tennis competition

Grand Slam’s qualified coaches will be responsible for coaching the participants each session. Participants will work in small groups to develop their fundamental movement skills, footwork and match play confidence through fun drills and point play.

Holidays Week 2 – Monday 6 – Friday 10 July at Wheatleigh St Tennis Courts. Students may select to participate in 1 – 5 days.

Holidays Week 3 – Monday 13Friday 17 July at Cammeray Tennis Courts. Students may select to participate in 1 – 5 days.

For more details and to register, please click here. Grand Slam Tennis are confident this camp will provide an enjoyable experience for all students.

What a term it has been! It has been a privilege to see the passion and patience, resilience and resourcefulness of the Drama and Theatre team, parents and students. We look forward to Term 3 with some exciting opportunities ahead.

Challenges and Silver Linings

Without doubt, this past semester has proved to be a challenging time for students, parents and teachers, as everyone quickly responded to the Covid-19 pandemic by adapting to a very different teaching and learning landscape. It has certainly been one of the greatest challenges to education in our lifetime, and from the perspective of the life of the musician, has shifted many of the processes used in creating, making and producing music.

Across the Department, it has been wonderful to observe staff and students display such resilience in their approach to new procedures, action creative and innovative thinking, and most importantly, work collaboratively in finding new solutions to new problems. A variety of new approaches has certainly been applied to learning in the Music classroom and participation in rehearsal spaces, and in reflection, has resulted in new beginnings and opportunities. The Music Department would like to thank the School community for supporting very different learning approaches during this time, and in encouraing their child as they continued to develop their Music skills and creativity in both Remote Learning and On-Campus settings.

Term 3 Music Program Overview

The Music Department is pleased to announce that all Instrumental Music Ensembles will now resume across the Junior and Senior Campuses. All Choral programs (P-12) and Group Singing is still under review throughout Weeks 1 and 2 and will be re-assessed at the start of Term 3 following the holiday period.

  • Instrumental programs (P-12) to re-commence from Week 1 onwards (modified rehearsal arrangements based on sectionals).
  • Extra Subjects Music program (Private Music and Group Tuition) continues as per Term 2.

More detailed information will be sent to the Music community at the end of the term, outlining the specifics of weekly rehearsal arrangements and expectations surrounding student safety.

Hygiene in the Music Setting

As part of our return to group settings, this has been a well-considered aspect of our planning and students involved in group instruction will follow the guidelines through the spreading out of rehearsals, utilising larger areas and outdoor learning spaces to promote distancing, where possible. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of musical equipment and resources will be undertaken daily.

Semester 2 Competition Auditions

  • Vocal Competition auditions (Term 3, Week 5)
  • Instrumental Competition auditions (Term 3, Week 9)

The audition process for both the Vocal and Instrumental entries will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. For the audition, students will only need to present one work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece WILL NOT be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the Competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist. Application forms can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Please note: Entries are only accepted when accompaniment scores are submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.

Auditions for Extensions Program (Week 4)

Extension Chamber Music, Jazz Vocal Ensemble and Advanced Guitar Ensemble

With the start of new repertoire in preparation for upcoming Term 4 events, the Extension Music program has opened enrolments for students interested in joining ensembles to further extend their music skills. Selection for participation in these ensembles is dependent on participation in core ensembles and in meeting the requirements of the audition process. Application forms can be found on Redlands Pulse. Auditions will be held in Week 4.

The Music Department is pleased to announce the 2020 Music Composition Competition. This creative opportunity is designed for any aspiring young composer in Yrs 7-12 who is currently enrolled in the either the Academic Music program, Cocurricular Music Ensembles program or Extra Subjects program.
