Issue 2 2025 Term 1 Week 2 - 06 Feb 2025

From the Principal

Yesterday we held the 2024 Celebration of Academic Achievement and Growth where we invited recent graduates back to campus who excelled in their HSC or IB studies last year. It is always one of my favourite assemblies of the year as our current Year 11 and 12 cohorts join staff and parents sharing and celebrating in the individual academic achievements and growth of the previous year’s graduates.

I know our current students sitting in Redlands Hall take great inspiration from both seeing how their peers and friends have excelled across their final years of schooling but also hearing of the challenges they faced and overcame. Sophia Rolon from the Class of 2024 gave an honest reflection of the importance of prioritisation and keeping a balance in the last two years of school while studying the IB, and fellow Redlander, Jacob Pamenter spoke of facing the hard truths in a conversation with Ms Van de Peer in Year 10 which gave him the motivation to diligently work to achieve his personal best in his HSC.

While we sent an overview of the HSC and IB Academic Results from the Class of 2024 to the wider community at the end of last year, since then we have had an opportunity to more deeply analyse these results. This analysis has only further illustrated both their outstanding achievements and growth last year. With communication as a real focus of ours this year, I thought I would further share some of the insights we have gained from this analysis.

Unfortunately, I am aware that narratives or truths about the academic “success” (a loaded term in itself) of a year group are derived from flawed and limited sources of information such as the HSC School Ranking in the media. Not only is this ranking of schools flawed, because it only takes into consideration students sitting the HSC and not the students sitting the IB (55% of the Redlands cohort from the Class of 2024 completed the IB Diploma), but it also bases this ranking merely on the percentage of Band 6s (the top band) scored and not the actual achievement or growth of the students.

Still, even if we used this flawed measure to assess the academic results of the Class of 2024 by converting IB grades into HSC bands (an inexact science), we would once again roughly be placed in the top 40 of this schools ranking.

Another incorrect narrative derived from these rankings was that our HSC results dipped from 2023 to 2024 because we dropped in this ranking. Again, this is not true as in fact our ATAR (a more holistic measure of achievement) for students sitting the HSC actually rose from 2023 to 2024 and was our highest HSC ATAR in the past 10 years.

How is this the case? Well at Redlands, we always put the student first and therefore we encourage our HSC students to choose more challenging subjects that will stretch them and earn them higher converted marks. So, while they might earn a Band 5 instead of a Band 6 in some these subjects, these marks get converted into higher ATAR scores for the students, thus opening up more tertiary options for them post school.

As for our IB students, even though the conversion of IB scores into the ATAR was lowered, our median IB ATAR increased from 2023 to 2024.

Overall, the combined median ATAR for all of our HSC and IB students from the Class of 2024 was just below 90 – an outstanding achievement for a non-selective academic school.

However, in our analysis of the academic results from the Class of 2024, what we are most proud of is their tremendous academic growth over their final two years of schooling. Last year’s graduating class greatly outperformed what their predicted Year 12 results were based on their academic performance from Year 10, which exemplifies how we “value add” for our students in their final years at Redlands.

This growth can be attributable to a number of different influences.

Firstly, we should laud the students from the Class of 2024 and their collective engagement, diligence and positive support for each other which we saw displayed throughout their final years at school.

In addition, credit needs to be given to the teachers. I have often said that we are blessed to have such high calibre, deeply caring and personally committed teachers and the Class of 2024 gave this same feedback to me in my individual meetings with them in Term 3 last year.

We are also using our leading, bespoke iGrow Data Analytics Platform to both individually track students but also collectively analyse a whole cohort, which allows us to tailor programs and interventions for both individual students and the wider Year Group.

And finally, because we have roughly half of our Year 11 and 12 students in the HSC pathway and half in the IB pathway, we are able to have smaller class sizes in the final two years of schooling (with an average class size of approximately 11 students), which allows for greater personalisation and individual support for students in Stage 6.

I hope this additional analysis provides parents and carers with further insights surrounding last year’s HSC and IB results. However, please be assured that the HSC, IB and ATAR scores are only a small part of the more substantive education Redlands students receive.

Most importantly, despite all of these stats and measurements of achievement and growth, our graduating students are far more than a number. They walk out the gates of Redlands as well-rounded, confident and compassionate young adults who are truly life ready to let their light shine and make a positive impact in the world.

Secondary Sport

Sport plays a crucial role in the holistic development of students in school. Engaging in sports activities helps students maintain physical fitness, which is essential for their overall health and wellbeing. Additionally, sports teach valuable life skills such as teamwork, discipline and time management. They also provide a constructive outlet for stress and improve mental health by boosting self-esteem and reducing anxiety. By participating in sports, students can develop a sense of camaraderie and school spirit, fostering a positive and inclusive school environment. Overall, sports are an integral part of a well-rounded education, contributing to the growth of both mind and body.

It was great to see the excitement of the Year 7s trialling for summer sport last Saturday. The sense of community at the School is great to see highlighted by the Senior 1st Basketballers assisting with the trials. This weekend teams will return to competitive action in ISA Round 7, with Redlands hosting a number of games at Macquarie University (Touch Football) and NBISC Warriewood (Basketball).

We all should be maintaining high expectations of ourselves, our teammates and being the best versions of ourselves.

It’s never over until we’re shaking hands at the net. Then you’ve either won or you’ve lost, and either way – you look them in the eye and say “Well played mate’.

AFL

I’m incredibly excited to accept a role with Redlands School’s Football Program in 2025.

I was born and raised in Melbourne and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to spend the past 18 years working in the AFL Industry.

From 2008-2017 I worked at Collingw, ood FC as Community & Next Generation Academy Manager as well as AFLW Assistant Coach (Backline) before moving to the Essendon Football Club where I held roles including Academies Manager, James Hird Academy Coach & AFLW Recruiting Manager.

My passion for coaching led me back to Collingwood FC from 2023-2024 where I held the role of Head of Academies and Peter Daicos Academy / VFL Assistant Coach & was lucky enough to be a part of the 2023 AFL Premiership.

More recently my family and I have recently moved to Sydney, where I have accepted a role with the Sydney Swans as Academy Talent & Coaching Director.

I’m really passionate about helping grow the game in NSW and developing talented girls and boys at Redlands in what shapes as a really exciting year.

I look forward to meeting all students and families soon.

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

Community Update

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the first few weeks of term. The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) have all been actively engaged in connecting, including and informing our new and current families.

We recognise the vital relationship between home and school and provide opportunities for parents and carers to actively engage with the School. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Redlands parents and to be involved with the School. Volunteer opportunities include classroom support, event support, Uniform Shop assistance, RPFA involvement or joining one of the Friends of Groups that support our many and varied Cocurricular activities. For more information on these opportunities along with upcoming events and group activities please visit the RPFA section of Note Day.

We are delighted to be able to come together as a community early in 2025 through a number of key and much loved Redlands events including Twilight in the Garden on Friday 21 February and our Year 7 Meet and Greet on Tuesday 4 March. Our Twilight in the Garden event for parents and carers provides a wonderful opportunity for our new families to connect with our school community on the Fahl Garden on our Senior Campus. We are expecting this to be another sold out event so please purchase your tickets early here.

It was a pleasure to welcome back on campus some of our newest alumni from the Class of 2024 and their families for the Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly yesterday. This event recognised and celebrated last year’s HSC and IB students. As our new alumni commence their journey beyond the school gates, we continue to ensure that they are connected and supported by the School and their local and global network of Redlanders. Our alumni engagement program includes mentoring and networking programs, interstate and international reunions, a seasonal newsletter and more in order to support a lifelong connection to the School. More information on our alumni engagement program, including international and interstate chapter meetings, can be found here.

A reminder that the best place to stay up to date on what’s happening at Redlands is through Pulse. Pulse provides a quick and easy connection with the School for all of the important information our community seeks – contact information, term dates, events, sport fixtures, school and absentee notices and other key links. Pulse can be accessed through the Redlands App that is available for download in the App Store for Apple users and Google Play for those using Android.

A request to parents/carers whose contact details have changed over the past 12 months (eg. email, mobile phone): Could you please update these on Pulse by cob Monday 10 February, as we will be sending out Year Group Contact Lists next week and we would like to ensure these contain the most up-to-date contact details.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly or the wider Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Celebration of Academic Achievement and Academic Growth

We were delighted to welcome back to campus Redlander Alumni from Class of 2024 who achieved exceptional results and personal growth in their final exams. Current Year 11 and 12 students were able to hear some reflections from our youngest Redlanders. Their message was to aspire high, remain connected with your friends and reach out to your teachers who are there to support you.

Mr Corcoran spoke about his journey at Redlands with this cohort, first as a Head of Secondary School then as a Deputy Principal and now as the Principal. This cohort experienced their growth in the context of our campus and we can reflect on how the Learning Hub has transformed the teaching and learning at Redlands.

See below before and after:

We are excited to maintain contact with this cohort and welcome them to our global network of Redlanders!

Secondhand Uniforms and More News on the New Owners of our Pre-loved Uniforms

A massive thank you to the team of volunteers who ran the Secondhand Uniform sale this past Saturday.  Total sales were over $3250, which goes entirely to the Redlands Scholarship Fund.  Bravo!

We sell our second hand uniforms for a third of the new price, and we make sure that every item is in reasonable condition before it is put out for sale. You can drop donations of sports uniforms (including fleeces and tracksuits) and any new uniform items in the yellow bin at the uniform shop on Military Road any time they are open.

People are always asking us when the next second hand sale is happening, and we would love to hold them more often, but we need donations as we just about sell out of sports uniforms every time. Thank you for keeping the RPFA in mind if you do have sports uniforms looking for a new home.

Additionally, in late 2024 we found a new home for some our old boys’ blue shirts and grey shorts. We packed and shipped several boxes to a charity in North Sydney, and we’re excited to report that the uniforms have now reached a school in South Sudan! Check out this beautiful picture of the children wearing the uniforms as they started school this week.

Contact us to list your event.

On Wednesday we held our annual Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly. This Assembly recognises and celebrates students of the Class of 2024 who achieved outstanding academic results in their chosen pathway, HSC or IB, in relation to State and World comparisons. At this assembly, we also recognise and celebrate students of the Class of 2024 who experienced the most substantial growth in their learning, reflective of the School’s strategic pursuit to enable personal excellence for all students.

2024 graduates Sophia Rolon (IB) and Jacob Pamenter (HSC) spoke to staff, parents and Stage 6 students. Here are some of their messages:

“Getting through Year 12 would have been a lot more difficult if it wasn’t for the consistent level of care shown by my teachers, no matter what shape or form this care came in. What I found most useful in maximising my results actually had nothing to do with the type of study I was doing or how many hours I would study for at a time – instead, I found my success through the people that I surrounded myself with.   It’s important to remember that you’re all in this together and there’s no limit on what each of you can achieve, so you may as well try your hardest.” (Jacob Pamenter)

“Year 11 and 12 are hard. Whether you do the IB, the HSC, “easy subjects,” or “hard subjects,” no one ever has, and no one ever will, find the whole thing easy. You’ll think you’re finally on top of things, only for it to get harder. But eventually, it does get better, it gets easier, you do start feeling more in control… The biggest thing that the IB taught me was to understand what things are worth and to attribute value accordingly. The word ‘prioritise’ became more than just a fancy word that sounded good in my goal-setting conversations.” (Sophia Rolon)

Personal Identity in a Complex World

Today we ran concurrent identity and development sessions for our Year 9 students. Our Year 9 girls engaged in a bespoke Spark session. Given there are so many influences on young women which makes their journey through adolescence sometimes tricky and conflicting, the girls unpacked various ways that young women can seek to respect themselves and others in their immediate worlds. Spark provides the tools which help young women build confidence, positively express themselves, understand their values, cultivate gratitude and perspective and build their capacity to be resilient.

Our Year 9 boys engaged in an Ignite session. The Ignite program focused on the often challenging journey to manhood and boys’ search for identity and meaning. Ignite is designed to challenge traditional concepts of manhood and to help young boys grow into men with strength, integrity and respect. The day explored three important values for growing into a man: strength, integrity and respect. The focus for both sets of students was on their personal development, self-concept and navigating real-life and online spaces.

This week the e-Safety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant published another powerful article: A way forward: Disrupting the darker forces impacting young men online

She says that ff we want to disrupt the swirling tide of harmful narratives online effectively being forced on young people, we need to do something different, something positive. And that includes giving young men healthy online role models about how to be a man – and lots of them. I found the e-safety commissioner’s recent article very helpful and have shared with the Redlands staff. It contains links to recent reports and provides helpful links for parents of young boys and men.

We are delighted to announce that Julie will lead the conversation at our inaugural “Voice Notes: Illuminating Events that Matter” International Women’s Day Breakfast on Monday 10 February. Please see the invitation to this event below.

Activities Fair

The Secondary School Activities Fair took place at lunchtime today. The Fahl Garden was abuzz with energy and commitment (and a little bit of sugar to fuel the sign-ups). I am looking forward to supporting Sophie Yu, Hiro Phillips and Jesse Forest run Public Speaking this year and was also keen to sign myself up for Big Sister Club. Our fabulous musicians wowed us with music throughout lunch and I’d like to extend my gratitude to the large number of Redlands teaching and operational staff who were supporting students to embrace all things cocurricular in 2025.

English Adaptive Groupings

Our new Adaptive Groupings for Mathematics and English in Year 7 -10 have commenced for 2025. Mr Conrad Del Villar’s informative message to students was captured in this video – we encourage parents to view this short film, so you understand how our new Adaptive groupings work in the Secondary School.

Redlands students have achieved an outstanding milestone in the international public speaking competition Re:Solved, which challenges students aged 13-18 to engage in global debate.

The latest competition focused on the theme Democracy in 2024, with students delivering persuasive speeches to showcase their critical thinking and public speaking skills. Service

Welcome back everyone!

Your Service Captains are delighted to announce our very first With Heart initiative of 2025, Sweethearts for Hearts, supporting Australian Charity HeartKids.

In honour of our motto, we’re proud to join forces with HeartKids during their national campaign to raise awareness for children suffering from congenital heart disease. Their campaign, and ours, culminates next Friday 14 February, marking both St Valentines Day and International Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day.

Purchase a rose or a friendship flower for another member of the school community during week and you’ll not only let someone else know you care, but you’ll be also supporting all those families facing an uncertain future. Throughout Week 3, students and staff can pre-order their flowers for delivery on Friday 14 February. Pre-orders will occur in the Liggins Quad during lunchtimes – $3 for a friendship flower and $5 for a rose.

Please consider helping us reach out target of $2000 by donating directly to the Redlands Sweethearts for Hearts campaign here

Final Senior Swimming Carnival for Year 12

The Year 12 students made their final Swimming Carnival a day to remember, filled with fun, spirited performances and unwavering Year Group pride. Embracing the vibrant theme of “What the Flipper Are You Wearing?”, students showcased not only their creativity with colourful costumes but also their excellence both in the pool and on the pool deck. With the ever-enthusiastic support of dedicated Sports and House Leaders, the carnival thrived from start to finish, creating an atmosphere of energy and excitement. This event was a clear reflection of the remarkable cohort they are – determined, patient, supportive and undeniably fun. Their participation captured the essence of school spirit, leaving a lasting legacy for future year groups to follow.

Swimming Carnival – Swimming, Cheering and Connecting

This week saw our students embrace the year with wonderful House spirit and camaraderie at our annual Secondary School Swimming Carnival. There was a lot of colour, loud cheers and speedy swimmers across the day.

Well done to all those students who jumped in the pool to race, particularly those who were able to place in their respective events. Congratulations also to all those who cheered on their friends and got behind their House Captains to support their House and motivate their peers in the pool. And, drum roll please… well done to our Swimming Carnival Champion House, Dumolo!

From me, a personal shout out to all the teachers who were brave enough to jump into the pool in the final staff versus student relay race, with the teachers clinching the race by the barest of margins!

Activities Fair

The annual Redlands Activities Fair was held at lunch today in preparation for the School’s Cocurricular Clubs program starting next week. Students were able to move between stalls to explore the vast array of clubs available to them in the Secondary School. Whether it be tending to the bees and harvesting honey on the Learning Hub rooftop in the Bee-Keeping Club; composing sonnets, cinquains and haikus in the Poetry Club; chasing down the truth and getting it to print in The Irregular Newspaper Club; or supporting our local community through the Bougainvillea Service Club; there is a club for every penchant and passion. Clubs are also a great way to challenge yourself to learn new skills and make new friends across different Year Groups, so we encourage students to sign up to something new this term.

For more information on all the clubs and their schedules, be sure to visit the Co-Curricular page on Pulse

Debating

Redlands has an excellent Debating program, which challenges students to develop their verbal prowess, enhancing their capacity to construct persuasive arguments, whilst also improving their ability to refute opposition points.

The School is excited to offer Year 9 students the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a fantastic program that encourages personal growth, skill development and outdoor adventure.

Term 1 Year 9 Moonbah Students

For students attending Moonbah this term, Mr Atkins, Head of High Country Campus, will be emailing parents with information and sign-up details for those who are interested. It is essential that sign-ups are completed by Friday night so we can approve student accounts and activities before they depart, as they will have limited access to devices while at Moonbah. Mr Atkins will also run a session with students on-site to guide them through the next steps.

Senior Campus Students

For students remaining on the Senior Campus for Term 1, we will be holding an information session at one of the Year Assemblies in the coming weeks to provide detailed information on the Duke of Edinburgh program and outline the sign-up process. Further details will be shared soon.

The access to opportunities will be the same irrespective of which program the students are in. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact Mr Walker.

Moonbah Farewell and Parent Breakfast

This Saturday, our first ever attendees at Moonbah will depart for what is sure to be an amazing term of experiential learning. We look forward to hearing of their wonderful experiences and wish them all the best!

We are proud of everyone who took part, demonstrating determination, sportsmanship and teamwork. Congratulations to all our swimmers for making the event a fantastic experience!

Year 8 Future Think Challenge Day

In Week 4, students will complete a quiz during Tutor Group to identify their transferable skills. Based on their results, they will be placed into groups that align with their strengths and interests.

On 13 March, they will spend the whole day working with industry experts, gaining real-world insights and exploring exciting career possibilities.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to uncover their potential and take a step toward their future!

Year 7 Transition to High School and the Technology Tango

We are excited to announce that on Wednesday 12 February, we will be hosting a special presentation by Jocelyn Brewer. Jocelyn is a Warrane/Sydney-based psychologist with a special interest in cyberpsychology and staying human in a digitally colonised, AI-infused world. She is the founder of Digital Nutrition and MetaWell, and is a sought-after speaker and media commentator.

Event Details:

  • Date: Wednesday 12 February
  • Time: 5:30pm – 7:00pm
  • Location: Redlands Hall

Program Information: Transition to High School and the Technology Tango

The transition to high school can be a big social-emotional leap. Friendship groups are reconfigured, students go from ‘ruling the school’ to being the smallest fish in a big pond, and expectations of independence increase. Throw in new rules and autonomy with devices, and it can be ‘a lot’.

This is a special session for parents of the 2025 Year 7 cohort that will help them feel supported by the School, understand some of the potential challenges and build skills to manage them. The session has a particular focus on technology and device use in the context of high school and the benefits of clear boundaries and agreements on screentime.

What will participants learn?

  • To build an understanding of the challenges around transitions to high school.
  • Skills to manage the socio-emotional leaps and changes around friendship groups and identity.
  • To develop strategies to support the increasing independence with technology and introduce clear boundaries with devices.

For: Parents, carers and grandparents of young people starting Year 7.

Format: A 75-minute presentation followed by time for questions.

Please follow the RSVP link to confirm your attendance

We look forward to seeing you there!

Head of Junior School

It has been such a pleasure to meet so many community members at this week’s Meet The Teacher sessions and the Kindergarten Morning Tea. I have been overwhelmed by the positive sentiments and warm welcome that has been extended to me, the new Junior School Leadership Team, and all of the new staff at who have commenced at Redlands. I am so excited for the year ahead!

This week, I spoke to 3-6 students at assembly about the importance of having an open mindset and embracing new challenges. At the start of a new academic year, there are endless opportunities for our students to grow, whether through exploring new areas of study, engaging in cocurricular activities or forming new friendships. Encouraging our children to step out of their comfort zones fosters resilience, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Australian mindset coach Ben Crowe has worked with some of the world’s top athletes, business leaders, and performers to help them cultivate a strong mental approach to success. He has coached sporting greats such as Ash Barty, the former world No. 1 tennis player, and Richmond Football Club in the AFL, helping them develop resilience, self-belief and purpose-driven performance. Crowe teaches that success is not about achieving perfection but about striving for progress and enjoying the journey. This perspective is particularly valuable for our students as they navigate new subjects, cocurricular pursuits and social interactions. By focusing on effort and learning rather than outcomes alone, they develop resilience and confidence.

At Redlands, we offer a broad and enriching curriculum, and I encourage all students to explore new areas of interest. Whether it’s trying a new sport, joining a music or dance ensemble, learning a musical instrument or participating in a debating competition, every experience contributes to their personal growth. Cocurricular activities not only enhance skills but also teach important life lessons about teamwork, discipline and perseverance.

Friendships also play a crucial role in a child’s school experience. I have spoken with students about the importance of being open to new friendships and showing kindness and inclusivity. It’s easy to stick with familiar faces, but forming new connections helps build empathy and social confidence. At Redlands, we believe in fostering a school culture that embodies our core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, fairness, compassion and moral courage. For example, students demonstrate fairness by including new classmates in games and group activities, ensuring that everyone feels a sense of belonging. Similarly, acts of compassion. such as checking in on a friend who seems lonely or offering a kind word to someone struggling, strengthen our community and make Redlands a place where every student feels valued and supported.

As parents and educators, we play a pivotal role in nurturing an open mindset in our children. When they see us modelling curiosity, resilience and a willingness to embrace new challenges, they are more likely to adopt these attitudes themselves. Encouraging positive self-talk, celebrating effort over results and reminding them that learning is a journey will help them develop the confidence to pursue their passions without fear of failure.

I look forward to seeing our students embrace this mindset as they take on new opportunities throughout the year. Let’s continue to work together to cultivate a school culture that encourages curiosity, perseverance, and the courage to try new things.

Carline

Thank you to the parents who utilise car line safely in the morning and afternoon. We appreciate you observing the curb side signage and following the directions of staff. This week we have been trialling a variety of different initiatives to see if we can make car line operate quicker, smoother and, most importantly, safer. As of the beginning of Week 3, please follow these guidelines in car line.

  • Pull up behind the car in front of you and next to the curb
  • Stay in the line (if you drive around the outside of the car line and cut in, you will be asked to join the back of the line)
  • Remain in your car at all times
  • Your child will be called to wait at a numbered sign
  • Drive up to your child and leave immediately after your child gets into the car
  • Do not text message or call your child to meet you at the bottom of Alister Street

We understand that this is a slightly different way of running car line. However, we are confident that these measures will help to make car line operate quicker, smoother and, most importantly, safer. Thanks for your cooperation and support!

Junior School Teacher Librarians

Redlands supports the Premier’s Reading Challenge as a way of promoting reading for pleasure. Last year, a large number of students participated in the program. In 2024 the whole of Year 2 and Year 3 cohort completed the PRC, which was something to celebrate. This year’s challenge will commence on 28 February. We hope for another year of active reading and participation.

Students who were at Redlands last year will use the same login details. In the coming weeks, all students will receive a sticker with their username and password details, which will be placed in their Student Planners. We will introduce the PRC during Library lessons.

Please go on to https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html  (Or google PRC, NSW) to start entering books. Students have until the end of August to enter all the books they have read.

After four years, students are entitled to a GOLD PRC certificate, after 7 years, a PLATINUM! These certificates are huge achievements and celebrated in assembly with Mr Quach.

Thank you for your ongoing support with the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Redlands House and PreKindergarten

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Redlands Families

We would like to extend a big thank you to all of the families who joined us for the Meet the Teacher evenings this week. It was such a pleasure to connect with you all and continue building those important relationships. We truly believe that strong partnerships between parents, families and our staff are key to the success of our students. It was heartwarming to see not only the connections being made between parents and teachers, but also the new friendships forming among families. What an incredible community we have here at Redlands! We look forward to continuing to work together to support our students.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

We would love families to join us for a celebration for Chinese New Year on Wednesday 12 February, from 9.30am to 10.30am. Families are invited to join us for this wonderful cultural event, which will have a variety of activities and experiences in the in Redlands House playground. If you have an activity or experience you would like to share, please reach out and let Mrs Huon know.

Parking

Parking around the school can be problematic, especially around pick up time. To ease congestion and ensure the safety of our students, the Prep School use a carline that enable parents to collect their children from the underground carpark from 2.45pm each day. We therefore ask Redlands House families to refrain from parking in the 5 minutes parking zone outside the preschool from 2.30pm onwards. Families are still able to park for 5 minutes out the front of Redlands House until 2.30pm.

Deputy Head: Students (K-2)

It has been a busy and happy week in the Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms. Despite the hot weather, the children have been very productive and are settling in beautifully to the routines of their new Year Group. There are a few things to note this week, which often arise at the start of a school year:

Firstly, please could we ask that your children arrive to school on time (between 8-8:20am) as quite a few students have come through the Reception Area after 8:30am. We understand how hard it can be some mornings, and that sometimes unforeseen issues arise, but when your child arrives late, it can make it harder for them to settle into the school day. They also miss valuable learning time! Thank you for your support.

Even though we are only two weeks into the term, we already have some lost property in the Junior School. If your child is missing an item, you can look in Lost Property, which is situated behind the School Canteen.

At the beginning of the school year, it is important for us to ensure we have the correct details on file for your child. If your emergency contact details have changed, or your child’s medical information has altered, please contact our K-2 Reception so that we can amend your child’s file.

Further to this, a request to parents/carers whose contact details have changed over the past 12 months (eg. email, mobile phone): Could you please update these on Pulse by cob Monday 10 February, as we will be sending out Year Group Contact Lists next week and we would like to ensure these contain the most up-to-date contact details.

Just a small reminder that when someone different is collecting your child, please inform the class teacher and Karin Pontes in advance (via email). We also ask for some proof of identity (such as a passport) for the teacher to be able to correctly identify the person collecting.

Lastly, I just wanted to say how lovely it has been getting to know your children over the past two weeks. I have been lucky enough to visit most of them in their classes and to read them a story; this has helped me to get to know them. I look forward to getting to know them further over the coming weeks.

First Wednesday Sport Session

Well done to all the students in both Representative and Non-Representative Sport who had their first full Wednesday sport session during the week. Prior to departure, our Sport Captains and House Captains (wearing neutral house bibs)  assisted over 400 students in locating their sport lines ahead of dismissal. Just prior to heading off to their respective sports they then heard from Henley and Selma (2025 Sport Captains) with both students to be commended for delivering their first address that outlines their goals for the year for sport and how they want to engage more students.

Students were reminded about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport in Term 1. Students are asked to adhere to these;

  • Right place
  • Right time
  • Right equipment

A reminder to check your app each week in regard to your child’s team as our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY                    in direct comparison to other students across the sport

ATTENDANCE        any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE                this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Parents and carers are reminded to check the teams each Friday afternoon for changes that may have taken place at training during the week. Students may at times be asked to fill in for other teams occasionally due to absentees etc.

Can you please ensure your check your child’ activities to see what sport they are commencing in this term making sure they bring the appropriate gear and or equipment to sport. Non-Rep families are also reminded to check the home page of Pulse as well as their individual sport pages on a regular basis for updates.

Winter Sport Selection- link closed Tuesday 4 February

Congratulations to over 300 families who completed their Term 2 Winter Sport selection last week. Nominations filled up quickly especially for some of our more popular Non-Rep Sports. For those families who have not completed their child’s Term 2 selection, a reminder was sent last week and please be aware if we don’t receive your child’s nomination they will automatically be added to those sports where places exist, and we will add these to your child’s activities which you can view on the Redlands App.

Cross Country Carnival

The Cross Country Carnival which will take place on Wednesday 12 February for all Junior School students, will be held at St Leonards Park, St Leonards. We will have full access to the entire Park and students will enjoy an open and challenging course. Each student will complete the course twice (two laps) to achieve the total distance.

Our aim is for this to be a fun experience for everyone on the day but also provide a great experience and challenge for those aiming to progress to IPSHA and CIS where the courses present many different challenges. Upon arrival at the venue students in each grade will be divided into two groups (Boys Championship Race and a Girls Championship Race) which will run as separate events.

Unfortunately, in previous Cross Country Carnivals, due to the open nature of the venue we have had parents/carers decide to run the course or parts thereof with their child either as a pace setter or to film their child in action. Not only is this action dangerous and unfair to all students but as result of this we are now adopting the IPSHA and CIS Cross Country rule into our school carnival in relation to this.

That is ‘if there is any outside interference and or hindrance on the course by a parent/carer or even a coach that sees them running part of the course that will rule that particular student time and or place null and void’.

Please note there are times when Redlands coaching staff and or teachers have been asked to run at the ‘tail’ of each event to encourage those students to keep going to the finish. The safety of our students is paramount, but it is equally important to ensure a fair and equitable race for all participants.

Parents, carers and supporters are welcome to view the races from the areas overlooking the start and finish line. Because this venue is open to the public we will be asking all spectators to say clear of the marked course so there is a clear line of sight between each checkpoint and runners are not impeded.

After the event the result will be sorted into age groups with the top 5 runners in boys and the top 5 runners in girls in each age group will make up the Redlands team that will participate at the IPSHA Carnival.

Please refer to our Cross-Country Carnival page on Pulse for all information relating to this carnival.

Redlands Pulse Orientation and Navigation Video

Our intranet, Redlands Pulse, is the first port of call for all Junior School Sport related enquiries. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here.

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Dance Academy

Redlands Dance Academy is now in full swing, and we’ve already welcomed over 160 excited dancers into our studios – and it’s only Wednesday!

With such a busy schedule, we kindly remind Junior parents to wait at the designated pick-up point at the end of classes. Parkes Hall corridor gets very congested, and having parents waiting inside makes it difficult to manage the students safely. Please ensure timely pick-up. Any children not collected on time will be taken to OOSH.

Parent Pick-Up Point for Junior Students (Kindergarten – Year 6)

Kindergarten dance classes are held in classrooms. Student pick-up is outside classrooms (see table below):

Parent pick-up point is located in front of the play equipment outside Parkes Hall (near Murdoch Street gate). At the end of dance classes, unless your child is going to OOSH, Academy staff will escort students to the pick-up point. Please meet your child promptly at the pick-up point. Any children not picked up on time will be taken to OOSH, which may incur a fee.

First Saturday of Term 1
