Issue 2 2024 Term 1 Week 2 - 08 Feb 2024

From the Principal

Yesterday we welcomed back students from the Class of 2023 for the Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly where we recognised a large group of HSC and IB students for their academic success last year. In addition to celebrating the outstanding individual academic results from last year’s students, I am also pleased to see our continued focus on growth and “personal bests” shine through in this assembly as we recognised students who attained the greatest growth in their academic performance from Year 10 to Year 12, as well.

This assembly is always one of my favourite events on the Redlands calendar. Not only do we get to catch up with some of last year’s graduates and hear where their journeys post Redlands have begun to lead them, but our current Year 11 and 12 cohorts get to hear some advice and helpful tips from our most recent graduates as they reflect on their recent experiences.

These reflections from recent graduates Sabrina Blasco, Briar Carter and Jamison Houchell struck various chords with me this year.

One message some of them shared is that there will be challenges in the final two years of schooling and it is normal for students to face moments of self-doubt, low motivation and disappointment. However, in these moments, it is important for students to remember they are not alone and to use their strong support networks of family, friends, teachers and other staff to help them through the challenging times.

A second message which resonated with me was the pride these students felt not for their own individual achievements but for the collective achievements of the wider cohort, highlighted through Briar’s reflection pride in all students in her Extension 2 English class earning a top band result or Sabrina feeling the collective sense of accomplishment when all of the IB students gathered together after they completed their Extended Essays.

And my final takeaway from the assembly was once again being reminded of how special the rapport between students and teachers is at Redlands. I have worked at a number of different schools with wonderful students and teachers; however, the relationship between students and teachers at Redlands is the strongest I have experienced, and it shone through in the collective pride felt by all yesterday,

I am confident the current Year 11 and Year 12 students in attendance would have also taken these and other messages to heart.

Community Update

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the first few weeks of term.  The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) have all been actively engaged in connecting, including and informing our new and current families.

We recognise the vital relationship between home and school and provide opportunities for parents and carers to actively engage with the School. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Redlands parents and to be involved with the School. Volunteer opportunities include classroom support, event support, Uniform Shop assistance, RPFA involvement or joining one of the Friends of Groups that support our many and varied Cocurricular activities. For more information on these opportunities along with upcoming events and group activities please visit the RPFA section of Note Day.

We look forward to welcoming our community to the popular Twilight in the Garden event next Friday night. This much loved event provides a wonderful opportunity for our new families to connect with our School community on the Fahl Garden on our Senior Campus. We are expecting this to be another sold out event so please purchase your tickets early here.

It was a pleasure to welcome back on campus some of our newest alumni from the Class of 2023 and their families for the Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly yesterday. This event recognised and celebrated the academic successes from last year’s HSC and IB students. As our new alumni commence their journey beyond the School gates, we continue to ensure that they are connected and supported by the School and their local and global network of Redlanders. Our alumni engagement program includes mentoring and networking programs, interstate and international reunions, a seasonal newsletter and more in order to support a lifelong connection to the School. More information on our alumni engagement program, including international and interstate chapter meetings, can be found here.

A reminder that the best place to stay up to date on what’s happening at Redlands is through Pulse. Pulse provides a quick and easy connection with the School for all of the important information our community seeks – contact information, term dates, events, sport fixtures, school and absentee notices and other key links. Instructions for setting up Pulse notifications and joining Groups can be found here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly or the wider Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Coralie Amos, Redlander 1964, Captain of Tennis, Sports Captain of McDouall

We were honoured to welcome Coralie Amos OAM from the class of 1964 back to campus this week. We are delighted that the next Redlands Means-tested Scholarship will be named after Coralie,  recognising her lifelong dedication to service.

The Scholarship is strictly means-tested and has been made possible by generous donations from parents, Alumni and friends within the Redlands community. It is aimed at providing a Redlands opportunity to a student from a family who would otherwise be unable to attend the School.

Alumni Updates

Beth O’Sullivan, Redlander 2017 and Claudia Vogel, Redlander 2016

It was exciting to learn that TWO Redlander Alumni will have their work exhibited at Craft + Design Canberra as part of the Emerging Contemporaries Exhibition, and at the Canberra Museum and Gallery in the second half of the year. Opening night is Friday 16 February with Artist talks on the Saturday 24 February.

Beth O’Sullivan

At the end of 2023, Beth graduated with a First Class Honours in Design ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences and was awarded the University Medal for academic excellence.

Her thesis, Reefinity: Multispecies Design Through Materiality, Computational Design and Digital Fabrication , developed and explored a novel calcium carbonate material and its properties through 3D printing and press moulds. The research investigated the viability of this new material to form small, environmentally friendly objects for coral reef research and small-scale reef restoration. “I’m very excited to continue this research in my PhD. “

Claudia Vogel

Claudia graduated from the UTS with a Bachelor of Industrial Design. She realised that she had a particularly strong interest in designing and creating in wood. She has recently completed a one-year full-time fine furniture woodworking course at the Sturt School for Wood in Mittagong. Claudia’s piece has been designed more than just a bench. Its functionality is much wider: in addition to being a comfortable two-seater bench, the two removable backrests (stored under the bench seat) convert the bench into a chair, or two chairs, or a chaise lounge.

The bench is also wider than usual: ideal to lie back on. Its rounded corners and edges, with matching cylindrical legs, enhance its look of comfort. It is intended to be ideal in an apartment, where space is typically limited, and a multi-functional piece of furniture is particularly useful.

Congratulations to both Beth and Claudia on these extraordinary achievements.

Behind the Scenes with RPFA:
Meet your RPFA Committee

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) is a group of committed parents who support the broad activities of the Redlands School’s diverse community. The RPFA is your first point of contact for Redlands community events or support. Check back here each week to meet 2024 committee members or to find to how to get involved.

RPFA FIVE with Vice-President Carrie Taylor

Name: Carrie Taylor
Role: RPFA Vice President
Kiddos: Noah (Yr 8), Blake (Yr 5) and Mia (Yr 4)

If you could choose a RPFA theme song (or super hero) what would be the title name?

I am going to go with Guardians of the Galaxy, and our theme song would be “Äin’t No Mountain High Enough”. I love the characters in Guardians of the Galaxy – they are all so different, unique and somewhat hilarious in their own way. They may not appear very powerful as individuals, but together they are a formidable bunch. We are similar in that sense- the community is so diverse, but we all bring something special and unique to the table. Together, we can accomplish wonderful things- and have lots of fun along the way.

Why did you decide to join RPFA?

We joined the School three years ago, in 2021. It was quite a stressful time with Covid still around and schools going in and out of online learning. It was not the best time to change schools, but we took the plunge. It was the best decision. The school community was unbelievably welcoming and my children made great friends from day 1. This is something that our family is immensely grateful for, and being in the RPFA is an opportunity for us to give back to the community.

If you could trade places with your children for a day what would you most want to experience?

I would love to trade places with my children not just for the day but for a whole year so they can make my lunches and drive me to school and activities every day! Jokes aside, I would love to experience being in some of the amazing clubs on offer. Hello Lego club in Junior School, and Chess & Boardgames club in Secondary School? Wow, I wish I had such opportunities when I was in school.

Parent Power Needed: Join the Team in 2024!

Teachers and Class Parent Coordinators are doing a Shout Out for Class Parents and Year Coordinators, particularly for Kindy Yellow and Two White. A great opportunity to meet other parents and get involved in your school community. All you will need is a sense of fun, enjoy people wrangling, a working with children check and have a spare couple of hours a week. Please fill in this form to indicate your interest.

The Week in Pictures

The Redlands walking crew enjoyed a fun dinner celebration last week!

Do you have pictures of parent / family get-togethers you want to share?

Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

Wishing everyone a safe and smooth start to the school year.

Secondary School Swimming Carnival

Tuesday’s Swimming Carnival was a fun community day for the students in the Secondary School. The students got into the spirit of things, chanted and cheered their House peers down the pool and supported each other, regardless of swimming ability. The teacher vs student relay was well attended this year! Our students generously afforded the teachers some race ‘provisions’ by waiting for them before starting, swimming butterfly instead of freestyle and generally lolling about in the water while the teachers caught up. Ultimately the students won the race, but did so with good humour and humility. One of my favourite elements of the day were the sharks who made their way around chatting to people, doing the macarena, with one even winning an award. Such talent, in and out of the pool!

Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly

On Wednesday we held our 2023 Celebration of Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly.  It was wonderful to see so many of our past students arrive looking relaxed and ready to take on the world.

We not only celebrated those students who achieved exceptionally well in the HSC & IB pathways, but we also celebrated the students who showed the most growth from Year 10 to the end of Year 12.

At this Assembly we heard from Sabrina Blasco, Briar Carter and Jamison Houchell, who shared their reflections on their last two years at Redlands with our current senior students.  Their speeches were heartfelt and genuine. I know that our current students would have taken a great deal of inspiration from hearing them share their stories, reflections and memories.

Year 7 Parent/Carer Meet & Greet

We are holding our Year 7 Meet & Greet on Monday 26 February from 5.00pm to 6.30pm in the Fahl Garden. The purpose of the evening is to enable our Year 7 parents and carers to meet our Teachers, Tutors and Year Advisors in an informal setting so you can begin to establish those connections that we see as so important in developing a productive partnership between home and school. It is also a wonderful opportunity to meet other Year 7 parents. Students do not attend this evening, as it is an adults only event.

Please note that the Year 7 Meet and Greet Evening is not a formal Student Conferences Evening.  The ‘Meet & Greet’ provides an opportunity to make those initial connections with academic and pastoral care teachers who work closely with Year 7 students this year.  The individual progress of students in their different academic subject areas will be discussed at the Year 7 Student Conferences Evening, scheduled for Wednesday, 31 July (early Term 3).

Morning Drop Off

A friendly reminder to parents driving their child/ren to school in the morning to be mindful of the road rules when dropping students off at the Gerard Street back gate.  Please adhere to the road rules and do not double park, permit your child to get out of the car whilst at the traffic lights, or do an illegal U turn at the entrance to Gerard Street.  Child safety and appropriate modelling of responsible driving is necessary, and we appreciate your cooperation in this respect.

Emergency Lunch

If a student forgets their lunch, you are now able to order a basic meal through Flexischools up until 10.30am that morning.

Swimming Carnival

The energy and spirit were infectious yesterday as the students participated at the highest rate in 2024 cohort history! Yr 12 stepped into the bleachers in full costume, embraced their theme of “Under the Sea,” encouraged younger years to “give it a go” and then hit the water with a splash as they participated in all the events for their last time at a Secondary School Swimming Carnival.

Standout costumes and contributions throughout the day included four sharks who swam their way around the carnival giving out high fives, a Beach Watch patrol person who was capturing memorable moments on camera, three red lobsters entertaining the crowd with tunes, a dedicated sea turtle who did not give up on his house to cheer the loudest, high energy flag wavers, water sport enthusiasts ready for their next adventure, Hawaiian travellers and beachgoers enjoying their time poolside. Did you ask what happens when a penguin, a pirate and a sailor walk into a pool together? They have a swimmingly good time.

Several students continued to impress with their incredible results. The level of competition was strong and these students deserve a well-earned congratulations. A special mention to Xander Halfen who set 3 new records!

A truly heartfelt thanks goes to our incredible Sport Department, the Heads of House and our 2024 House Captains. House Captains took time to care for younger students in their houses, they role-modelled involvement and worked with staff in a caring and encouraging way to sort the events throughout the day, to manage the stands, lead cheers and organise the student-staff relay. Thank you to all students and staff who volunteered to race in this memorable competition.

Year 11

Celebration of Academic Achievement & Growth Assembly

This week, Yr 11 celebrated the successes of Yr 12 2023 at their Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly. It was a wonderful opportunity for Yr 11 to consider what lies ahead in terms of planning and how best to prepare for their senior years to ensure success and growth. As parents, preparing and supporting your teens through their senior studies is crucial for their academic success and overall wellbeing.

  • Establish open communication channels to understand their goals, challenges and anxieties.
  • Encourage them to create a realistic study schedule that balances academics, extracurricular activities and downtime.
  • Help them to set achievable short-term goals to stay motivated and track progress.
  • Offer emotional support during stressful periods, reminding them that setbacks are part of the learning process.
  • Encourage healthy habits such as regular exercise, nutritious meals and sufficient sleep to optimise cognitive function.
  • Provide a conducive study environment free from distractions.
  • Offer guidance on effective study techniques and time management strategies.
  • Celebrate their achievements and acknowledge their efforts, fostering confidence and resilience.
  • Emphasise the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance and seeking help when needed.

By nurturing a supportive and empowering environment, we can help navigate senior studies with confidence and success.

Swimming Carnival

The Secondary School Swimming Carnival was a memorable event, marked by spirited competition and camaraderie. Throughout the day, students displayed their swimming skills with determination and enthusiasm, supported by cheers from their peers. From the warm-up laps to the final races, the pool buzzed with excitement. The carnival provided an opportunity for students to showcase their skills and foster a sense of community within the school. It was a day filled with friendly rivalry and sportsmanship. Tutor Time this Week

This week in Tutor time, Year 10 students have spent time reconnecting as a group, and working collaboratively to develop shared Tutor group goals. These goals are focused on the following points:

  • How can we create a supportive and inclusive environment within our Tutor Group to ensure the emotional wellbeing of each student?
  • What strategies can we collectively employ to ensure active participation and meaningful engagement in the activities and discussions during our Tutor time, with the goal of extracting the most value for both personal wellbeing and academic development?
  • What specific study habits or techniques can we collectively adopt and encourage to improve our academic performance and time management?
  • In what ways can we establish a peer support system within our Tutor Group to help each other navigate academic challenges and promote a positive learning atmosphere?
  • How can we use the regular goal-setting exercises and reflection sessions to track individual and collective progress in both academic and personal development over the course of the year?
  • What cocurricular activities or workshops could we explore together to promote a holistic approach to our personal growth, encompassing both academic achievements and well-rounded skill development?
  • How can we use our Tutor Leaders to best support the Tutor Group, and the wider cohort?

Year 8

Week 2: Making Connections and Making Waves

Yr 8 have adjusted well to the new year at Redlands. They are approaching their subjects confidently, looking fantastic in new and old uniforms and interacting with positivity and care towards their peers and others in the Redlands community. Friday was a powerful moment of connection as students engaged in ‘Fun Friday’ activities in Tutor and proceeded to rebuild the strong Tutor community they had forged in 2023. Whether it was Cowper playing Connect Four, Dumolo heading outside to get some sun, McDouall jumping and jiving to Just Dance or Roseby playing with Kamifusen (provided to all students by their wonderful Tutor, Mr Owen), it was a clear indicator of the beautiful communities that exist in our Yr 8 cohort. We will keep building these connections across the year and beyond, so the cohort always feel supported and seen in their Tutor spaces.

On Monday we held a year assembly, reiterating some of the key messages that students have been told across the term in relation to uniform, hair and locker security. Students were reminded that their lockers will be inspected on Friday, with Tutors looking for how organised they are, how clean they are and if they have working locks on them. We appreciate your support in reminding students of the importance of keeping their lockers locked, in order to protect their personal possessions.

Lucas Gai also shared his experiences with the cohort, detailing his amazing holiday journey to China. He regaled us with facts about the terracotta warriors and the Forbidden City, where the palace complex is 720,000 square metres, with 9,999 rooms in the palace. Fun fact: it can fit 50 Buckingham Palaces inside it!

Swimming Carnival brings out our House Spirit

The rain may have initially dampened some spirits on Tuesday morning (this Year Advisor certainly got a bit wet!) but the water at Homebush reinvigorated them as we dived headfirst into the Redlands Secondary School Swimming Carnival for 2024. There was a lot of noise, colour and excitement as everyone brought their energy to supporting their respective Houses and getting in the pool to race each other for fun, fitness and fame. It was a really positive vibe and a great indicator of our powerful Redlands community. There were certainly a few laughs too, especially when four Yr 12 students moved through the stands dressed in inflatable shark costumes!

Well done to all the students who got involved, particularly those who entered into more than one race. A huge congratulations especially to our Yr 8 Age Champions and Runners Up for the day:

  • Freya Nixey 14 Girls Age Champion (and also Junior Division Champion)
  • Liv Law 14 Girls Runner Up
  • Lachlan Carter 14 Boys Runner Up

Cocurricular Opportunities – The Activities Fair

It was a busy and buzzing afternoon today as all Redlands cocurricular clubs and activities gathered together at lunch to promote the fun and fulfilment joining them might offer to students. From Environment Club to eSports, Public Speaking to Poetry Writing, Debating to Da Vinci Decathlon, there are a vast array of activities on offer for students in 2024. Engaging in these cocurricular opportunities is a great way for students to meet like minded people and build their friendship networks. I encourage all students to try out a new activity or club this year. Who knows, you might just find your next favourite passion!

All the key details about cocurricular clubs and activities can be found through Pulse.

Student Success: Otis Gait

At the end of January, Yr 8 student, Otis Gait had a great achievement and experience in playing for the New South Wales U13 Indoor State Hockey team at the recent Hockey Australia National Championships in Canberra. After some challenging injuries last year, Otis worked hard to recover and then train to achieve his best, and he has been able to have a successful and fulfilling year of hockey. He scored his debut goal in the Championships – an epic full field movement which saw him get past almost every opposition player – and his team managed to achieve a Bronze medal by the end of the competition. Well done, Otis!

Year 7

Our Second Week in Year 7…

This week we held our 2024 Secondary School Swimming Carnival. This is an eagerly anticipated annual event that splashes excitement across our entire Redlands community. Held at SOPAC, it transforms the typical school day into a vibrant spectacle of competitions and spirited house cheering (and dancing). The carnival not only celebrates athletic prowess but also fosters a sense of community, encouraging students to cheer for their classmates and embrace the joy of friendly competition.

A huge shout out goes to our Yr 7 students who participated in this event. It was wonderful to see your house spirit shine through.

A big congratulations to the following students.

Getting the Little Things Right!

In our school routine, let’s not underestimate the power of getting the little things right. It’s not just about tackling the big assignments, it’s also about being on time, keeping things tidy and meeting those smaller everyday deadlines. These might seem like minor details, but they make a big difference! Embracing these habits creates a more organised and efficient learning environment.

Tomorrow will be our first Planner Signing for Yr 7 Students. This will give all students the opportunity to share their learning with their parents and carers. Please can you ensure you sign your child’s planner for Week 1 ready for our Tutors to check.

Chapel Service

All Yr 7 students were fortunate to receive a Bible during this week’s Chapel Service. Thank you to our wonderful Chaplain, Ms Phillips, who made everyone feel welcome and part of the Redlands community. It is important for our Yr 7 students to remember that attending a chapel service in school holds profound significance as it fosters a sense of community and spiritual growth. These fortnightly gatherings provide a dedicated time for reflection, moral guidance and the nurturing of values that extend beyond academic pursuits.

Yr 7 Family Get-Together

Our wonderful Yr 7 Parent Reps have organised a family get-together on Sunday 11 February at Clontarf Reserve (3pm-5pm) to encourage new and existing Redlands families to build connections and help ease any concerns you might have about our upcoming camp.

Camp

Student Medication

A Medical Authority Form needs to be completed for any prescription medication – please email forms to Mr Atkins (eatkins@redlands.nsw.edu.au) by Friday, February 9.

All prescription medication must be provided in a Webster-Pak from a chemist. We will not accept any other delivery.

Any Over the Counter medication (Claratyne etc…) should be in the original packaging and a Medical Authority Form.

What to Bring

Students will need to bring a nut-free packed recess and lunch for the first day. All other food is provided.

Redlands continues to deliver Camp programs in partnership with The Outdoor Education Group (OEG).

A packing list and equipment advice is available via the OEG website.

Step Beyond…

With our upcoming Yr 7 Camp, students may be feeling a wide variety of emotions. We are taking advice from our Yr 12 Peers and are encouraging all Yr 7 students to Step Beyond. Camp is a great opportunity for students to challenge themselves and have fun outside of the classroom.

Over the next week, we will be talking to all of our Yr 7 students about the benefits of an outdoor education. School Camps offer an educational experience beyond the classroom, fostering outdoor learning, teamwork and personal development. By immersing in natural settings, our students develop an appreciation for the natural environment. Through hands-on experiences and social interactions, Yr 7 students develop essential skills like communication, leadership and empathy.

Camps also provide a break from technology, allowing students to fully engage with their surroundings and form lasting memories with others.

Further information about camp will be shared next week.

Head of Junior School

It’s been quite evident, as I have moved around the classrooms this week, that students have settled well into the school year. I have been pleased to see a sense of calmness and purpose as students engage with new learning. In this week’s assembly we spoke about how by making a small sacrifice to help others, be that time, effort, showing kindness, consideration or compassion we make our whole school community better. I have certainly seen many examples of this happening this week.

Car Lines

Whilst I appreciated that I am probably preaching to the converted, can I respectfully remind parents using the car line either at drop off or pick up that they must not park and leave their in the car in the pick-up / drop-off zone that operates 7:30am – 9:00am and 2:30pm – 4:00pm. In recent days we have had a number of cars that have been parked in this zone at this time resulting in additional congestion and potentially compromising student safety. Senior staff will be on hand over the next period to assist the smooth operation of the car line and we have also requested enhanced Ranger presence at these times. A reminder that student dismissal time is 3:20pm so please do not enter the carline before this time. Many thanks for your assistance.

Reusable Canteen Containers

The Junior Campus will be trialling reusable canteen containers to reduce our waste and carbon footprint. The successful implementation of this initiative will reduce over 13,000 litres of waste going to landfill. To begin this transition, we will start the process off slowly to ensure for a smoother transition for students, with only some lunch orders being delivered in reusable containers. When students have finished their lunch, they will take their empty container back to the labelled tubs outside the canteen. It is an expectation these containers will be returned, however; to begin this journey there will be various incentives put in place to returns to occur.

Redlands Photo Days

Redlands school photo days are across the following dates:

  • Prep School: Thursday 14 March
  • Junior School: Friday 15 March
  • Senior Campus Sibling Photos: Week 3, Wednesday 14 February, 7:15am – 8:15am – Redlands Hall
  • Junior Campus Sibling Photos: Week 7, Friday 15 March, 7:00am – 7:45am – Dunnet Hall Foyer

For parents with children across both Secondary and Junior/Prep School who would like sibling photos, we welcome you to attend either Sibling Photo day on Wednesday 14 February on the Senior Campus, or Friday 15 March on the Junior Campus. Please note if you wish to have Sibling photos on the Wednesday, this is our Junior School Sports day, so it may be a consideration to have your children dressed in their standard uniform in the morning for the photos, and pack their sports uniform to change into after the photos.

Morning and Afternoon Car Lines

Can I please ask and remind families who use Allister Street for dropping off and picking up children, that they must not park and leave their car in the pick-up/ drop off zone that operates 7.30am- 9am and between 2.30pm- 4pm.

Parking your car and leaving it to walk your child into the campus is causing congestion and creating situations that could potentially compromise the safety of our students. We strongly encourage Prep families to use the morning and afternoon ‘car park carline’ where staff are on hand to help your child in and out of cars. Junior School families can also access this in the mornings.

Senior staff will be on hand over the next period to assist the smooth operation of the car line and we have also requested enhanced Ranger presence at these times.

PreKindergarten and Redlands House Drop Off and Pick Up

PreK

A PreK staff member will be stationed outside Pep Reception on Allister Street between 8am-8.20am each morning for those PreK parents who would like to use the Allister St drop zone in the mornings. PreK families can also use the morning car line for drop off if they have an older sibling to walk them to their room.

Redlands House

Redlands House parents are permitted to park for 5 minutes outside of Redlands House in the designated time frame displayed. Please adhere to this as prolonged parking creates congestion, double parking and confusion with prep school car line which starts at 2.45am.

A Redlands House staff member will be present out the front of Redlands House each morning and afternoon to assist with this over the next period of time.

Prep Music News

A Message from Ms Moses and Mr Owen

It was wonderful to hear our musicians resume private lessons on the Preparatory Campus this week.

Next week, rehearsals for our two Prep Music Ensembles will commence – Prep Choir and Prep Strings. It’s not too late to enrol! Please visit the Junior Campus Music Pulse page to find the cocurricular enrolment form for 2024.

Rehearsal times:

  • Prep Strings: Monday 7:45-8:15am
  • Prep Choir: Friday 7:45-8:15am

Private instrumental lessons will be resuming this week as well.

Daily Routine Reminders

Post 8.20am arrival

2024 Prep School routines are well on their way to running smoothly and a big thank you to families for following our processes and procedures. If you do arrive after 8.20am, please drop your child at Prep reception where Ms Pontes will enter their time of arrival and take them to their class.

Reusable Canteen Containers

The Junior Campus will be trialling reusable canteen containers to reduce our waste and carbon footprint. For parents with children across both Secondary and Junior/Prep School who would like sibling photos, we welcome you to attend either Sibling Photo day on Wednesday 14 February on Senior Campus, or Friday 15 March on Junior Campus.

As we are in a transition phase for the new school uniform, Prep students are to wear which ever option they come to school in on this day as well. There is no need to buy any additional pieces.

We hope that you will invite your extended family so that the children have an authentic audience who are genuinely interested in their learning.

Secondary Sport

There was a great article in the The Sydney Morning Herald over the weekend titled Active children do better at school. So how do we keep teens in sport? At Redlands we take pride in the fact that we offer Representative Sport all year round, with all students needing to complete one Representative Sport (Summer or Winter) each year, including in their final year. As we look back at the 2023 Year 12 results it was great to highlight so many of the high achievers who had completed both Summer and Winter Representative Sports in their final year of school.

Engaging in sports during exam periods is crucial for teenagers’ overall wellbeing. Physical activity has been linked to improved cognitive function, including enhanced concentration, memory and problem-solving skills. Regular exercise helps alleviate stress and anxiety, common during exam preparation, by promoting the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood enhancers. Moreover, participation in sports fosters discipline and time management, valuable skills for balancing academic and extracurricular commitments. The break from studying allows for mental rejuvenation, preventing burnout and improving focus when returning to academic tasks. Team sports additionally promote social interaction, aiding in the development of communication and teamwork skills. Ultimately, integrating sports into the routine of teenagers during exam periods contributes to a holistic approach to education, fostering both physical and mental wellbeing.

How can we help? by motivating teenagers to include sports in their exam preparation by framing physical activity as a complement to academic success. Emphasising the cognitive benefits, such as improved focus and stress reduction, can highlight the positive impact on study sessions. Setting realistic goals and creating a schedule that includes dedicated time for both studying and sports helps establish a balanced routine. Parents can also participate in physical activities with their teenagers, making it a shared, enjoyable experience. Additionally, reinforcing the idea that breaks for sports contribute to overall wellbeing may encourage teenagers to view exercise as an essential part of their exam preparation strategy.

A reminder that the Winter Sport Registration was emailed to the Students via iLearn on Monday, some reminders:

  • All Year 7 students must complete a Winter Representative Sport
  • Students in Year 8-11:
    • if you are currently completing a Non-Representative Sport, you are required to complete a 2024 Winter Representative Sport
    • if you are currently competing in a 2023/24 Summer Representative Sport, you may compete in a 2024 Winter Representative Sport or a Non-Representative Sport
  • Year 12 Students
    • if you are currently completing a Non-Representative Sport, you are required to compete in a 2024 Winter Representative Sport
    • If you are competing in a 2023/24 Summer Representative Sport, you may either compete in a 2024 Winter Representative Sport or complete a Non-Representative Sport, or use the time on Thursday to study.

Hockey

Hockey NSW showcased its bright future for Indoor Hockey securing 10 medals at the pinnacle event of the season, the National Indoor Hockey Championships in Canberra from 3 January to 25 January.

Out of the 8 Grand Finals played, NSW secured a remarkable presence in 7, attaining a tally of 5 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. The U13s age group abstained from finals, allowing the focus to shift towards developing skills and fostering a love for the game among the players.

Our Year 8 student, Otis Gait, had a great experience playing for New South Wales U13 Indoor State hockey team at the recent Hockey Australia National Championships in Canberra at the end of January, his team achieving a Bronze rank.

Rowing

Last weekend a small group of students competed at the Kings/PLC Regatta held at Penrith.

The Year 9 girls started the day off with some great results in their Year 9 Coxed Quad Sculls, where all crews finished within the top 4 positions and the Div 3 finishing in second place. These students then raced up an age group, with the Year 9 1st crew winning the Year 10 Div 2 in fine style while both the 2nd and 3rd crews finished in 3rd place. The girls them jumped from these crews into small boats with some strong performances in both single and double sculls.

Our Year 10 Girls 1st crew had some strong competition finishing in a strong 3rd place. Following this the girls also competed in singles and doubles where Issy Campbell finished in 2nd place while the double of Katie Budden and Mila Osborn finished in 3rd.

Senior Girls were strong early in the day in the single and double sculls, with Scarlett Thorp and Jemima Hugman finishing in 3rd place while both Lily Wainberg and Bella Crennan also finished 3rd in their respective single scull events. The girls then combined into their school crews where the Girls 1st crew and Girls 2nd crew finished in 3rd and 2nd place of their respective divisions.

The big highlight of the day was our Senior Boys with the Boys 1st and Boys 2nd performance combinations finishing in both 1st and 2nd place of the Men’s Under 19 Coxed Quad and then following this up with a strong performance in the Mens Under 17 Coxed quads with a 2nd and 4th place.

NSW STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS – Sat 10 to Sun 11 February

This weekend a limited number of students will have the opportunity to race at the NSW State Championships. In recent years this has turned into a mini national championships with school from across Australia sending their top ranked crews. Full regatta details for this including a draw will be available on Pulse.

ACT HEAD OF THE LAKE & CHAMPIONSHIPS – Sat 17 to Sun 18 February

Information for this has already been communicated with the permissions open online. This is a great regatta for students and parents alike with plenty of social activities for the parents organised through the Friends of Rowing.

Junior Sport

We want to extend our congratulations to both new and returning students for their outstanding enthusiasm and dedication in tackling the multitude of tasks assigned to them over the past two weeks. This is especially notable during our inaugural Wednesday sports session, where 452 students were dispatched to more than 14 different venues for their first week of sports activities.

For those students participating in Representative Sports, this also involved attending Summer Sports trials last Saturday and being assigned to a team for the upcoming start of the Summer Sports season this weekend. It’s indeed an exciting period for everyone. The first of many extension sport skills sessions have seen remarkable attendance, the schedule has been uploaded, and uniforms have been acquired, leaving us well prepared for Term 1 Sport.

We’d like to remind students to be at the venue at least 30 minutes prior to the listed start time, allowing ample time for warm-up, position assignment, and pre game instructions.

Regarding communication, after this week, the volume of notifications from the Junior School Sports department will significantly decrease. All future live links for registration, confirmation of Winter Sports participation, and document sign-ups can be accessed on the Junior School Sports pages on Redlands Pulse.

Thanks Coach!

As we commence another term of sport, the first for the year, students are encouraged to foster a culture of gratitude within both the Representative and Non-Representative Sports programs. This involves expressing appreciation to their coaches in representative teams, acknowledging supervising staff on Wednesday Sports, recognising coaching staff in Non-Representative Sports, as well as showing gratitude to drivers, medical staff and their foremost supporters—their parents and carers.

Could you please remind your child to take a moment to convey their thanks to coaches and officials at the end of each match. It was heartening to witness some students last term expressing their gratitude to coaches for their guidance and efforts having coached them since Term 1. However, it’s noted that this acknowledgment wasn’t universal across all teams, sports, and individuals.

In a period when schools in Sydney are grappling with challenges in attracting and retaining sports coaches post-Covid, it is crucial for Redlands to uphold the high standards of coaching across our campuses. A timely reminder to your child would be beneficial, prompting them to personally thank their coaches at the conclusion of their sport each Wednesday.

Please enjoy the video that has been shared with your child’s class teacher.

Thank You Coach Video

Redlands Pulse – The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday Sport, only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Ballet Buns for Kindergarten – Year 6

A warm welcome to all our Ballerinas.

Please look at the instructions below so you can practise your Ballet Buns at home.

If possible, ballet students should come to school with their hair in a bun, ready for their ballet class. Academy staff will be on hand to tidy hair prior to class.

If this is not possible, Academy staff will assist students with their hair.

Please make sure you child has a brush/comb and a bun kit in their ballet bag (see below).

Name It

A gentle reminder to parents/carers to please ensure your child’s school uniform and dance uniform are named, including ballet bags and ballet shoes. This is particularly important for our younger dancers.

Dance Uniforms – Seniors

A reminder that sport uniform is not to be worn for dance. Please see our UNIFORMS Pulse page for information on what to wear to your dance classes.

Changing a Class

The new timetable is filled to the brim with a variety of dance genres for students to enjoy. We are still tweaking room allocations and class rolls so please check your student’s Activities on the Redlands App and let us know if your classes are incorrect.

Please note that any changes to enrolments after Sunday 11 February will incur an administration fee (see our Terms and Conditions on the DANCE ACADEMY Pulse page and our Enrolments Pulse page for further details).

New Parent Pick-Up Point after Dance: for Year 1-2 Students

Due to construction works near Junior Reception, we have a new “parent pick-up point”, until further notice. This applies for our Year 1 & Year 2 students dancing during the week, and all students dancing on Saturdays.

Our new parent pick-up point is located in front of the play equipment outside Parkes Hall.

Please see the map below for the location of the new parent pick-up point. We will also have signs up, directing you to the new pick-up point.

As per signage, children are not allowed on the play equipment before/after Dance classes.

Please note that the Murdoch Street pedestrian gate is open from 2.30pm – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday, and is closed all day Saturday and Sunday. When the Murdoch Street gate is locked, access to Parkes Hall for Academy Dance classes is via the gate off Allister Street, adjacent to Junior Reception.

Tickets for the Australian Ballet’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

We have secured 40 tickets for the Australian Ballet’s dress rehearsal of Christopher Wheeldon’s extravagant Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at the Capitol Theatre on Monday 19 February at 7pm. Masterfully translated from Lewis Carroll’s beloved book, Wheeldon brings the humour and eccentricities of the original story to the ballet stage in a fantastical tale. Watch as the Queen of Hearts rampages around her court, the White Rabbit shimmies his tail and the Caterpillar sparkles in 16 crystal-covered pointe shoes.

Drama

You’ve Got a Friend in Me!

Calling all Friends of Drama parents of Year 7 to 12 students. Next Tuesday 13 February 7.30-8.15am we are hosting an after-drop-off-coffee in the Drama and Theatre Office for any new (or existing) Friends of Drama – come and meet the new team. We don’t expect you to be able to make an octopus (or chihuahua) costume from scratch or even be able to sew, we’d just love to have some more enthusiasts in our Friends team to help with the many collaborative aspects of putting on excellent Redlands Drama and Theatre performances. Please click this link to let us know that you’ll be joining us or if you can’t, but would like to get involved.

Redlands Drama and Theatre has well and truly hit the ground running and we’re gearing up for an exciting year ahead, full of opportunities for all students to get involved. This year’s musical Legally Blonde is well into rehearsals and is working away at a break-neck speed to prepare for the show in Week 8 (not to mention the UN-style negotiations regarding chihuahua options). Next week, our plethora of amazing co and extra subject curricular clubs commence, offering a huge variety of skills and experiences for performance lovers, backstage heroes and creative visionaries alike.

During school hours, classes in Curriculum Drama and Theatre have started and are busy building fantastic connections and fostering amazing collaborative, creative work from play building, dramatic elements, Verbatim theatre to Approaches to Acting such as Meyerhold and Le Coq to Physical Theatre Collaborative Projects. The staffroom is abuzz with excitement and plans for a thrilling year of Drama and Theatre, including the Shakespeare Carnival in the quad later this term, so watch this space for announcements about excursions, performance evenings and opportunities.

What’s a better way to kick off the year than with a “launch-of-season” musical event where you can lie back and enjoy some Jazz? That’s right, Jazz in the Garden is coming on 2 March – book now!

After a season off due to the Spring Fair, Jazz in the Garden is back bigger and better than before. This year, we’re excited to be including many more ensembles, including some from the Junior Campus!

Friends of Music are holding a sausage sizzle for the event, as well as a Yr 12 Bake Sale. When booking below, you can even pre-purchase your sausage sizzle for $3! It promises to be a wonderful afternoon of music and entertainment.

Percussion Ensemble

We are thrilled to announce that we are starting a Percussion Ensemble on our Senior Campus! The ensemble is open to all students of all abilities, from our most beginning to advanced students. In Senior Percussion Ensemble, students will focus on building core rhythmic and technical skills, and learning how to collaborate with both tuned and untuned percussion equipment in an ensemble setting. It promises to be a blast and highly engaging for all who join!

Enrol now via Pulse!

Friends of Music Meeting – Thursday 22 February

Our first Friends of Music meeting of the year is coming up! It’s a great opportunity to look at the year ahead. We invite anyone in our community, but particularly in a Junior School community, to come join and be part of what we do.

Prep Orientation Music Session

We were thrilled welcome a number of Prep parents to our music information session last Thursday. It was a wonderful opportunity for the community to meet the music staff, learn more about the music offerings available to Prep and Junior Students, and to connect with other parents. Please find a link to the slideshow here.

What’s on when? Cocurricular Ensembles in Wk 3

Meet the Team: Senior Academic Music

As we start out the year, we’re going to do a ‘meet the team!’ focus across our campuses for Music.

To kick off, please meet our Senior Academic Team! Our new staff are so excited to help all students, and it doesn’t matter which teacher you have – we’re all available to help students whenever you need. We’re excited by the variety of expertise and knowledge our Senior team will bring to our curriculum Music students enrolled in elective music.

Here to help!

Keep your eye on Pulse and the MUSIC EVENTS page to ensure key dates are all on the family calendar and reach out to your campus Music Office if we can assist in any way.
