Issue 2 2022 - 10 Feb 2022

From The Principal

It has been impressive to note how the school community has approached the start of the school year, with students pleased to be back, catching up with friends and forming new relationships, teachers energised by new classes and welcoming new members of their teams, and parents rock solid in their support and seeking ways to connect during this period.

As previously communicated, to start the year we decided to inform parents whenever we there is a positive COVID case identified in a particular Year Group in the School. While these regular updates may at times give the impression that there are numerous cases, the reality is that we have been pleased by the very low number of cases in the community. We have also not seen a pattern of further transmission in any of our student cohorts, or spikes in any particular group. If this were to be the case, we would certainly inform parents and carers who may be impacted.

Thank you for your support with our COVID safe protocols, and implementing the regular Rapid Antigen Tests on Monday and Wednesday mornings. We have been informed that our updated supply will arrive today and these kits will be distributed to students at school this Friday.

We are very much looking forward to commencing our Summer Sport fixtures this week in both the ISA and IPSHA competitions. The general rule for spectators will be two people per student for outdoor fixtures and one per student for indoor fixtures and masks are compulsory for indoor venues. Masks are still strongly recommended for spectators outdoors. At times there may be alternative requirements at external venues, or other schools.

Redlands Lane on Senior Campus, which runs from Waters Rd to Military Rd, can now be utilised for Bus pick-up and drop-off for the Secondary School. From this afternoon a number of our Sport buses will be utilising this lane and in due course further information will be forthcoming regarding other student buses. This will greatly improve student access to the campus and provide a much more streamlined pick up and drop off process for Sport and other external activities. As our three Redlands Bus services (Pittwater, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs) are used by both Junior and Secondary students, there will be no change to their current drop-off and pick-up locations. While we did utilise Redlands Lane for the pick-up of the RAT kits, it will not be used as a parent drop-off or pick-up zone, which will remain in the current allocated space on Waters Rd.

We are also delighted that the Staff carpark underneath the Fahl Garden opened this week, which will take over 60 cars from the local streets. The carpark requires a swipe a card for entry and is only accessible by staff. Visitor parking on Senior Campus will remain outside the Lone Oak building on Military Rd.

Community Update

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the first few weeks of Term. While we continue to review our on campus events we encourage a connection to the significant and diverse experience of our PCGs, Class and Year Group parents who support our community. Year Group contact lists are also being distributed to assist in connecting our community. Each year, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association organise and support a number of community, cohort and class events which are a wonderful opportunity to participate in the active Redlands community and meet other parents and friends of Redlands. These are well underway in 2022 and details can be found here.

We recognise the vital relationship between home and school and provide opportunities for parents to actively engage with the School. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Redlands parents and to be involved with the School. Volunteer opportunities include classroom support, event support, Uniform Shop assistance, RPFA involvement or joining one of the Friends of Groups that support our many and varied Cocurricular activities. More information on volunteering at Redlands along with an update from the Foundation team, can be found here.

A reminder that the Redlands App is available for download  in both the App Store for Apple users and Google Play for those using Android.  The App provides a quick and easy connection with the school for all of the important information our community seeks – contact information, term dates, events, sport fixtures, school and absentee notices and other key links – all from the palm of your hand.  It also allows parents to subscribe to specific groups of interest without having to see information that is not of interest to you.  After downloading the App, you simply enter your Redlands login to access and personalise your settings. The App will be enhanced as the year unfolds and we look forward to receiving your feedback on this key platform.

It should be noted that the WhatsApp groups used by parents and carers are not formally endorsed by the School.  All communication from the School is shared via email, Pulse and Note Day.  While WhatsApp groups may be considered an easy and quick reference point, this platform should not always be considered as a trusted source of information. Where information is sought or clarification is required, we encourage parents to contact the relevant section of the School directly or through feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au, as early as possible to avoid confusion and inconvenience.

A reminder that all COVID-19 related communications to parents and other relevant information is posted on the COVID-19 Page of Redlands Pulse.

Thank you for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Foundation

Redlands is part of a Giving Society

We are delighted to inform our community that the means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund is a registered charity with Good2Give which is a Workplace Giving platform that enables companies to empower their employees to donate to charities and not-for-profits, straight from their salary, with no need to keep credit cards or bank details up to date and in most cases offers matching gifts.

Many prominent employers such as Westpac, Citibank, BT, NAB, Qantas, Stockland, Baker & MacKenzie, Deutsche Bank and others are part of this program. If you have a workplace giving account, please visit here.

Volunteering at Redlands

We are very proud of our supportive community and incredible involvement of our parents who lead and participate in various initiatives. One of these initiatives is the Second Hand Uniform Sale which has a long tradition at Redlands. A team of dedicated parent volunteers created a virtual platform to be able to continue to offer this service to our community during the pandemic. Proceeds raised from this sale are contributed to the means-tested scholarship and in addition, this initiative supports our Sustainability program. Thank you to the RPFA Committee and all volunteers for organising another Second Hand Uniform Sale later this term. For further details, please visit the RPFA page.

Thank you sincerely to many members of our Redlands community for your generosity and ongoing support! With your help and involvement we can make a difference in the life of deserving students who otherwise would not get the opportunity to experience a Redlands education.

Redlander Friendships for Life

We regularly hear from our Alumni community that the friendships made at school meaningfully endure well beyond the school gates. They still gather for celebrations, or a regular lunch date, and attend their school reunions or even found a business together.

Three 2017 Redlanders, Tom McDonald, Kristo Hakola-Parry and Sammy Crawford-Smith, have started their own video production company, Salty Films, based in Sydney, and founded on the idea of discovery and producing work of the highest standard. They have combined their talents in shooting, direction and editing, to create “an all-encompassing, well-oiled team for productions of all sizes.”

“At Salty Films our passion for filmmaking has always been inextricably tied to both our love for the outdoors and a good old-fashioned sense of adventure.”

They elected to go to UTS together because it has the most modern approach to hands-on practical learning. Tom said “the biggest thing at university was finding likeminded people and spending all your time working and being with people who are passionate about their learning and what they want to achieve.”

Internships can be invaluable, and Kristo found work experience with production companies helped him to see how a big production house, as well as a start-up, functions.

“I think the biggest thing for the three of us during our time at Redlands, was being given the opportunity to take the reins for creating internal videos on trips and at events and being able to have a laugh at assemblies and see what resonates with people.”

Salty Films have made several Redlands community videos incuding the 2018 Spring Fair and 2019 Artist in Residence program. Well done Redlanders!

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day was held across Australia on Tuesday this week. #play it fair online was the catchphrase and this year’s focus was on parents.  This article, Mind the Gap: Parental awareness of children’s exposure to risks online posted by our Director of Digital Innovation, Mary-Lou O’Brien, reminds us that despite an increase in parent awareness and digital involvement since 2016 there are still some significant gaps. The research explores the opportunities and risks that the internet presents for children in Australia. More than 3,500 young people aged 8 to 17, and their parents, were surveyed during August and September 2021.

A summary of the key Findings:

  • Young people engage in a wide range of online activities and experience many benefits from using the internet:
    • Many children have gone online for health information, searching for material about mental, physical and sexual health.
    • A third of children looked for emotional support online from friends and/or mental health support services.
  • Significant numbers of children have had negative online experiences:
    • Close to half of the children surveyed were treated in a hurtful or nasty way online in the past year.
    • A quarter of the children had themselves treated someone in a hurtful or nasty way online.
    • One in ten children have been the target of hate speech online.
  • Almost all children did something in response to a negative online experience – most commonly telling their parents.
  • Exposure to negative online content and sexual content is prevalent among young people aged 14 to 17 years.
  • Many parents underestimate the prevalence of children’s negative online experiences, and many are not aware of their teens’ exposure to negative content or sexual material online.
  • Children with restrictive parents are less likely to be exposed to harmful content, but they are also much less likely to engage in supportive and protective online activities.

A reminder that students and parents can report online harm here.

RATs for Week 3 and 4

We expect delivery of the next round of Rapid Antigen Tests today and will distribute them to students on Friday. Yr 7 and new students in Yr 8-11 will receive five RATs and all other students will receive four RATs. At this stage the plan is to sustain testing on Monday and Wednesday morning before school (or training).

Are you a Yr 12 Parent or Carer?

Yr 12 have made a stunning start to 2022. Both Dean of HSC, Ms Lucy Benjamin and Dean of IB, Mr Darren Taylor have been impressed with their academic commitment and capacity to work together, which has also been recognised by Year Advisor Ms Rebecca Mountain.

We look forward to supporting Parents and Carers of Yr 12 students next Wednesday afternoon for our Yr 12 HSC/IB Information Webinar. Please make the time to join us next Wednesday afternoon, with your Year 12 student/s, where you will meet the core team supporting Yr 12 and hear from:

  • Deans of HSC and IB
  • Year Advisor and Assistant Year Advisor
  • Redlands Careers and University Advisors
  • Redlands Executive

The Webinar Link is below in the flyer, and a recording of the Webinar, with accompanying slide pack, will be available on Pulse later next week.

Yr 12 Out and About

Last week our Yr 12 IB Geography students travelled to the upper reaches of the Thredbo River and began studying downstream changes in the river in accordance with the Bradshaw and Shumm Models as part of their IB Geography Internal Assessment. This involved wetsuits and life jackets in the deeper and faster flowing areas of the river as students measured river slope, velocity, particle characteristics, wetted perimeter, cross-sectional area and discharge. It was certainly beneficial for students to be able to collect primary data and see physical processes playing out in front of them and we sincerely hope they all enjoyed the experience whilst gaining valuable practical experience. A huge thank you to Mr Darren Taylor and Mr Richard Millham who accompanied the students.

Winter School Information Session and Application Process

The Winter School Information Session will be help via Zoom at 6pm on Tuesday 22 Feb 2022 via this link.

Attendance at the Information Session is strongly recommended so students and parents are fully informed as to the nature of the program and application process before registering interest.

Families will be able to register their interest for Winter School from Wed 23 Feb via a TryBooking link.

In a change to previous years, students will then be required to submit a multimodal application via iLearn following the expression of interest.

After the initial application, prospective students and parents may be invited to interview, to be conducted in Week 7 (14-18 Mar).

Places at Winter School are limited and due to the high volume of applicants, not all students will be offered an interview. Criteria on which applications will be assessed will be communicated at the Information Session, and found in the Terms and Conditions of the registration link.

Cocurricular Activities

At lunchtime this Friday we hold our annual Activities Fair to showcase the variety of extracurricular and cocurricular activities we have on offer to students.

Some extra classes in the Performing and Visual Arts have already started, with all other activities and clubs due to start from next week.

A timetable of activities for 2022 is available on Redlands Pulse, along with details of the best staff contact should your child wish to find out more. For lunchtime clubs students don’t need to pre-register and can just go along on the day.

We’re very excited to be able to offer our full suite of activities in a COVID-safe manner after all the disruption of recent years.

Study Centre

The aim of the Study Centre is to provide students from Years 7-12 with the opportunity to receive shoulder-to-shoulder support or assistance in specific disciplines from Secondary School teachers.

Teachers from a variety of subjects are available before and after school Mon-Wed each week in the breakout spaces of the New Learning Hub.

The full timetable will be available on the Secondary School Redlands Pulse page and is shared with students via Year Group Pastoral pages.

Supporting Students to be Life Ready

The Redlands Careers and University Advisors, Ms Clare Hurst and Ms Justine Fowler, regularly meet with Yr 11 and 12 students, and have meetings scheduled well into March this year already. As well as providing personalised support to students and families, they also work with Year Advisors and Deans of HSC and IB, to provide whole cohort education. It is a Secondary School goal this year to support all of our senior students to become familiar with the Careers and University Advisors – scheduling a meeting or two, even if they do not yet know what they intend to pursue post-school.

Our Yr 12 students this term will benefit from information sessions held during tutor time to deepen their understanding of

  • the post-school application processes
  • Important timelines
  • UAC
  • early entry into university
  • interstate and international university applications

Our Yr 10 students will be emailed their Career Avenues Profile reports today. We strongly encourage Parents and Carers to take the time to read and discuss the report with their child. The purpose of the Career Avenues profiling is to support career exploration in Yr 10, prior to making subject preferences for Years 11 and 12.  The email from Career Avenues will also include instructions on how to book in for the highly popular interview with a Career Avenues Counsellor. Students will attend these interviews during school time in a Library meeting room with the Career Avenues Counsellor via Zoom. Students can share their zoom link with Parents and Carers, so you can join the session. Please take the weekend to ascertain a time suitable for this interview, before booking in. We know from previous experience that Year 10 students who were joined by their parents for this interview were able to make more confidently make subject preferences in Term 2, and so we really appreciate parents who get involved.

Yr 12 Information Evening

Wednesday 16 February at 5.30pm

Please join us for a webinar that will include key information for students and parents about Yr 12 study.

Wellbeing Program

As part of our Wellbeing program, our theme for Yr 12 is ‘Making a difference’, where students are encouraged to look to their future after school and consider ways in which they can help others and make a difference in the world. Towards the end of last year, a number of students worked together to raise money for the organisation M’Lop Tapang in Cambodia, supporting local students and their community. Part of that initiative involved donating over $1000 to shave Mr Millham’s beard off, which was something I did in the final week of school in front of the year group – very entertaining for all! Some members of the Year Group have also been communicating with leaders of M’Lop Tapang, and a video was put together by students in Cambodia for Redlands, that can be seen here.

Geography Field Trip

Yr 12 IB Geography students visited Jindabyne last weekend, staying at the High Country Campus, collecting data on the Thredbo River as part of their internal assessments. Students braved the changing weather conditions and cold water, having a successful and enjoyable trip.

Year 11

Year 11 Study Skills

On Wednesday, all of Year 11 met with the Dean of HSC Ms Lucy Benjamin and the Year Advisor to work on study skills that could be used when students have study periods or to assist with after-school study.
This will assist Year 11 with their time management and organisation, along with preparation for upcoming assessments and exams.

Some of the tips from the Study Skills session with Year 11 include:

  • When setting aside time in a study timetable, avoid writing ‘Study Period’ or ‘Do some revision’: it’s too vague!
  • Consider what you need to work on: what subjects do you feel you have more gaps in? What assessments are coming up?
  • Review your study timetable every fortnight: update it according to what’s coming up and what you’ve been learning in class.
  • If you need some help, just come and ask! Communicate in person with your teachers.
  • Wellbeing is paramount – allow yourself to have a break. Go for a run, walk the dog, meditate and remove yourself from technology for a period of time to reset and refresh prior to study.

Ideas for Study Periods and after school revision:

  • Prepare for assessment tasks
  • Revise key terminology – create a quiz for someone else and have them write one for you, for example
  • Talk through difficult concepts that you might need to look at again – find someone who understood them
  • Complete past HSC papers or HSC questions
  • Make Flashcards
  • Take an online quiz
  • Talk with your teachers if you need to
  • Don’t wait until assessment tasks are set!

HSC & IB Academic Contacts

For any communication regarding HSC subjects or subject changes please email Mrs Lucy Benjamin lbenjamin@redlands.nsw.edu.au and for any inquiries regarding the IB Subjects or subject changes, please email Mr Darren Taylor dtaylor@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Year 11 students have been encouraged to directly email their subject teachers or organise a time to meet with them in person if they need any clarification on the lesson or assessment content.

iLearn Class Pages and Connected Learning iLearn pages.

  • Connected Learning iLearn Page: If students  are in isolation and feeling unwell, they can use the Connected Learning page to keep in touch with key ideas and skills. There are also Wellbeing suggestions if students need them.
  • iLearn Subject Class Pages: if students are in isolation but asymptomatic, students can use their iLearn class page as normal to keep up with the learning going on in school. Students teachers will summarise their lessons there so that students can engage with the learning at home.
  • Most importantly, students are encouraged to keep in touch with their teachers and communicate with them via email.

Key Dates for confirmed events.

  • Wednesday 2 March – Year 11 Information Evening 5.30pm to 6.30pm

Career Avenues Profiling and Yr 10 Career Interviews

Last week, Yr 10 completed the thorough Careers Profiling that took place on Friday in Redlands Hall.  Students seemed to enjoy the variety of questions asked and there was much discussion around possible careers that may arise from the assessment.

Students will be emailed their Career Avenues Profile reports on Thursday this week. Parents should take time to read and discuss the reports with their child. The purpose of the Career Avenues profiling is to help and support career exploration in Yr 10 prior to making subject choices for Years 11 and 12.  The email from Career Avenues will also include instructions on how to book the interview with a Career Avenues Counsellor. Students will attend these interviews during school time in a Library meeting room with the Counsellor via Zoom. They should share their zoom link with parents/carers to join the session.

Please contact careers@redlands.nsw.edu.au with any issues or concerns in this process.

Safer Internet Day 8 February

This week, Yr 10 were reminded of how we all need to #Play it Safe and Fair Online. Students had time to check on their online image and discuss what steps they might need to take to stay safe online. Students were also provided support for setting up their email signatures to communicate with their teachers and other staff at Redlands. The eSafety Commissioner has printed recent research on the need for digital parenting needing to evolve as their children grow. Most students have had negative online experiences and the most common action from children is to tell their parents. Parents are encouraged to stay abreast of recent research and to know how to report negative online experiences to the eSafety Commissioner if and when something happens. See Mind the Gap: Parental awareness of children’s exposure to risks online.

Secondary School Individual Portraits and Sibling Photos – Friday 4 March

Activities Fair

The Activities Fair will be held this Friday 11 February during Lunchtime. Students are encouraged to come to the fair to browse the various clubs on offer. Yr 10 will be allocated a time Friday at 1.15pm – 1.25pm in the Fahl Garden to attend the fair.

Uniform Reminders

Thank you for supporting your children in wearing their uniform appropriately as we begin a new school year. We do have a whole school approach at Redlands and adults in all areas of the school may speak with students about their uniform. Shared expectations across the school and at home supports consistency and understanding for our students and allows us to focus on learning in the classroom and connections in the playground.  We focus on our uniform for the following reasons:

  • Uniform creates a sense of school identify, pride and respect
  • Uniform supports cohesion through a developed sense of equality
  • Students are able to identify fellow ‘team’ members promoting a shared sense of belonging
  • Uniform prepares students for life beyond school (workplace dress codes, job interviews etc.)
  • Uniform creates a sense of professionalism and encourages an affinity for learning
  • A uniform policy contributes to a consistent, whole school approach to establish clarity around uniform expectations and equity amongst students.

Redlands Running Academy

If your teenager(s) has an interest in running and would like to build fitness for the Redlands XC Carnival at the end of the term, there will be a Wednesday morning running group called the ‘Redlands Running Academy’ for selected students which will meet every Wednesday morning at 6.20am in the Senior Campus Undercroft for a continuous half hour run, returning to school by 7.15am. Further details on submitting an expression of interest and requirements will be posted in the Yr 10 Pastoral iLearn page.

Pastoral Focus – Week 2

This week Yr 9 has focused on Filing and Organisation. Tutors have spent time during pastoral care working with students on organisation at both school and at home ready for the year ahead. There is an array of resources on the ILearn Yr 9 Pastoral page to assist students further including:

  • Managing Computer Files
  • Organising & Filing
  • Using Folders
  • Getting organised – Afternoon Planner
  • How to get organised when living across two households

Next weeks focus will be on Managing Workloads.

Safer Internet Day 2022 – Play it Fair Online

This Safer Internet Day, eSafety Commissioner are calling on everyone to play it safe and fair online. This global initiative brings families, schools, organisations and governments from 170 countries together to raise awareness about online safety. There is no place for online abuse. We can all help to make life online enjoyable by being kind and respectful to each other.

This week, Tutors explored the following questions with students and looked at case studies when exploring online safety:

  • What are you good at online?
  • What do you enjoy most about being online?
  • What ideas, strengths, skills or knowledge can you bring to create and maintain an inclusive, positive and safe online environment?
  • What issues and challenges do you see online?
  • What broader social inequalities might affect young people online?
  • How do you suggest these might be addressed?

Furthermore, students were guided to where they could get assistance from a Support Service such as Kids Helpine, Lifeline, Beyond Blue, eHeadspace, Bullying. No Way!, and Youth Law Australia.

Electronic Devices in the Playground

We have worked consistently to encourage students not to use their phones during break periods in the playground. It is pleasing to see many of our Yr 8 students engaged in conversation and socialising with peers in a more proactive fashion.

Lost Property

Please ensure your child has named all their property. We understand that it is often challenging for some students to look after their belongings and it is certainly easier to return items to students when they are clearly named.

Year 7

Yr 7 have settled in well to the rhythm of Secondary School life. They are now finding their way around the campus with limited fuss, and they are beginning to form good connections with their teachers and with each other. This week, I have placed emphasis on resilience and “stepping up” with the students. Our Yr 7s are already resilient and most are eagerly anticipating the new experiences on offer on our Senior Campus. Tomorrow, Friday, there will be an Activities Fair during lunchtime in the Fahl Garden and Gym Undercroft. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to get a snapshot of the cocurricular clubs on offer. Students who involve themselves in clubs and extra activities, will inevitably build cross grade friendships with like minds. Clubs also give students the opportunity to broaden their interests and develop skillsets in new areas.

Thank you to all parents who tuned into our Yr 7 School Readiness Parent Webinar on Monday evening. The link is available here and also through Pulse on our Yr 7 page, if you would like to review the information and slides.

Ms Alyssha Clarke has accepted the position of Acting Subject Coordinator of Drama and Theatre; consequently, Dr Meta Regis is joining the Yr 7 Wellbeing Team as Assistant Year Advisor. I worked closely with Dr Regis last year supporting our Yr 12 2021 cohort, she is highly capable and generous with her time and she will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Yr 7 Team. Congratulations to both Ms Clarke and Dr Regis on their recent appointments.

Student Organisation

A key to personal and academic success as a Yr 7 student is to be well organised. To support students in their transition, Tutors have worked with students to set up digital subject folders on their laptop. Students are to use icloud to store these folders as having worked stored on the desktop can be easily lost if the laptop is damaged (& needs to go to Apple) or lost. Please check in with your son and daughter and discuss the importance of cloud storage for their schoolwork.

Expectations and Friendships

This week, our Head of Secondary School, Ms Gemma Van de Peer addressed Yr 7 at our Year Meeting. She spoke with students about the expectations for their behaviour as Secondary School students and she did so with her trademark humour and warm presence. Ms Van de Peer also suggested to students that they be open to broadening their friendship circles, particularly, encouraging students from Redlands Junior School to be open to making new friends with students new to Redlands this year. Ms Van de Peer then took questions from the floor and students showed that they greatly appreciated their time with her.

School Uniform

The Redlands uniform creates an identity for the School and gives students a sense of belonging. Wearing the uniform with pride, means our students are respecting and buying into our Redlands Vision, Mission and Values. For this reason, all students are to ensure their uniform meets regulations. Please refer to pages 19-20 in the 2022 Student Planner for further information.

Head of Junior School

One of the joys of my week is always time spent in the classrooms and I have enjoyed observing students settled, engaged and inquisitive in rich, learning experiences and conversation.

As you will be aware, Redlands has a long association with Project Zero at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education in developing how we create, nurture, embed and sustain a Culture of Thinking in our School and the eight Cultural Forces that the philosophy says exist and defines every learning environment.

I know that class teachers have also shared this information in Meet the Teacher sessions with families this week and these eight forces are listed below with a brief explanation of their significance and as teachers, how we aim to explore how best to leverage them to maximise learning opportunities and experiences for our students remains a key focus for Redlands teachers and will be language that you will see and hear from teachers and your children. It is relevant to any environment and would easily translate into any work space if you wanted to explore it in your own context.

Representative Sport Kick Off

IPSHA Code of Conduct

  • Children play organised sports for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of spectators only, nor are they miniature professionals.
  • Applaud good performances and efforts from each team. Congratulate all participants upon their performance regardless of the game’s outcome.
  • Respect the officials’ decision.
  • Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during a competition.
  • Positive comments are motivational and encourage continued effort.
  • Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players.
  • Show respect for your team’s opponents. Without them there would be no game.
  • Encourage players to follow the rules and the officials’ decisions.
  • Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language, harassing players, coaches or officials.
  • Comments should not interfere with the running of the game.
  • Focus on the efforts and performance of the children rather than the result.

We are delighted to welcome ONE parent per child at our home indoor venue of Dunnet Hall and TWO parents for home outdoor venues. Please check the information sent by the Sports department on the different rules that different schools will also have for their own venues.

I thank Mr Dunne and Ms O’Sullivan for all of their preparation and I look forward to getting around to supporting our various teams in the coming weeks.

School Photographs

A reminder that Junior School photographs take place next Thursday 17 February. All students are required to wear full school unform including blazers and if they have PE on this day, should being their PE kit in to change into as a one-off. The letter is also on the Junior School page of Redlands Pulse for your reference.

Meet the Teacher Information Evening

The class teachers enjoyed connecting with parents and carers this week at our annual Meet the Teacher Information Evening. I encourage parents to keep the lines of communication between home and school open and we are always here to answer any questions you may have. I express my thanks to the class teachers for their preparation for this important evening at the start of the year and slides are up on Redlands Pulse for parents to refer to, as needed.

Student Masks

Please can parents ensure that children are coming to school each day with a mask. A spare one is advisable to have in bags as well.

Redlands App

For our new families, in particular, please do download the Redlands App from either the App Store or Google Play and once downloaded, please use your Redlands login details to access the App. This App provides a quick and easy connection with the School for all of the important information our community seeks: contact information, term dates, events, sport fixtures, school and absentee notices and other key links – all from the palm of your hand. It also allows parents to subscribe to specific groups of interest without having to see information that may not be of interest to you.

Redlands ySafe Cyber Safety Hub

In 2021, in partnership with ySafe, Redlands launched our own Cyber Safety Hub specifically for our community; a treasure-trove of current, research-based information and assistance for our families and staff.

I encourage every family to take the time to explore this valuable resource to support you and your child, which includes a range of relevant topics such as:

  • Cyber safety guides
  • Managing screen time
  • Creating a safe home
  • Gaming
  • Setting up parental controls
  • App and Game reviews

Arnold Library Student Use Before and After School

Prep School Photos   Wednesday 16 February

Prep School class and individual school photos take place next week on Wednesday 16 February. Class and portrait packages will automatically be billed to your school account and sent directly to your contact address. If you do not wish to receive a complete photograph pack, please click here to access Melba’s webpage, and opt out before 11 March 2022. If you have any questions, please contact Melba Studios directly on (02) 9438 4566 or email sales@melbastudios.com.au. Uniforms, Hair and Jewellery

People often tell me what a beautiful uniform we have and how smart and proud our students look in their uniforms, I completely agree with them, but already we are starting to see some of our students looking a little scruffy as they walk through the door. I know for little ones it is tricky at times, but children are never too young to develop pride in their school uniform. With this said, can I please ask for your help as parents, to ensure that together we help embed a sense pride in student appearance and uniform by:

Tucking shirts in to shorts

Wearing playground hats correctly (Prep wear the bucket hat)

Boys’ hair is to be neat and tidy. If it does become long and starts to hang over their eyes or collar, please get a haircut or tie it back so it is off their face.

Girls’ hair is to be tied back neatly with a blue ribbon.

Nail polish is to be removed before coming to school. Only plain studs or sleepers are to be worn as jewellery please.

Thank you for your assistance with this as strive to teach our students school pride and a sense of personal responsibility.

Clubs

Due to COVID restrictions that prevent us from mixing cohorts in classrooms as well changing staff commitments, we have decided to trial running Prep Clubs during the school day instead of on Wednesday afternoons. We will be working on the logistics over the next few weeks, so more information will be shared with you as to how this will look and how you can register your child.

OOSH (Out of School Hours Care)

Please be aware that Trish Rai is now the Coordinator of the Redlands House Extended Care program. We are currently in the process of advertising for a new K-6 OOSH Coordinator. Our highly professional OOSH staff are doing a wonderful job of running the daily program. Can I please ask you to ring or email if us if your child is not attending OOSH on an afternoon that you have booked them in for, this allows the staff to contact the next family on the wait list to alert them to a position for that afternoon.

Lost Property and Daily Planners

Each Friday there will be a lost property table set up outside the Prep Reception door in the morning and afternoon. Any item in lost property with a name will be placed on the table. Any unlabelled pieces of clothing will be donated to the second-hand clothing drive.

Thank you to all those parents who have been using the Daily Planner to notify classroom teachers as to their child’s afternoon activities. Can I please ask that this continues for another two weeks, thank you.

A message from Mr Trevor Dunne, Head of Junior School Sport

Storypark

Thank you to all of the new families who have provided permission for their child to be on Storypark. Storypark allows us to communicate, deepen relationships and strengthen communication between home and preschool.  It also enables us to reinforce experiences and deepen children’s learning. Stories are shared with families each week, sitting and viewing these stories with your child will demonstrate your interest in their world, and acknowledge its importance.  You can choose to add your own stories or leave comments and feedback for children and our teaching team. You can also choose to share these stories with family members if you wish. We hope that you will invite your extended family so that the children have an authentic audience who are genuinely interested in their learning.

Learning Centres

When exploring the rooms in Redlands House you cannot miss the learning centres thoughtfully created by the staff to inspire children’s play. Learning centres are an important way to support the play-based learning environment that underpins the Early Years Learning framework. Each area of the room has a focus and is changed regularly to meet the needs of individual children and the group as a whole. Staff work with children in and around these areas to teach concepts and skills targeted to each child’s needs. Provocations are set up to challenge thinking and extend an interest. This is the magic of the early childhood classroom and makes it a highly individualised learning environment for each child.

Centres are based on areas of learning and can include the following:

Reading Centre or Library – A quiet spot set up in the classroom, with a variety of books available for the children to read or share literature with teachers.

Writing Centre – A place where students can practice the various stages of writing. Exploring a wide range of writing and drawing materials. Learning that writing has a purpose.

Building Centre or Block Corner – Having a large spot set-aside for building and creating is an important part of Early Childhood Classrooms. Building can include blocks, train tracks and cars, Lego and so many other creative building options.

Art and Crafts Centre – The purpose of this centre in preschool is to let the children explore their creativity. Students might paint self-portraits, make play dough, or paste collage material. Children might see what happens when they mix different paint colours or experiment with mixed-media art or sculpture.

Science/Environment Centre – The science/natural material centre in preschool helps the children learn to investigate the world around them. Depending on the children’s interests, you might have pumpkins to dissect, rocks, shells, insects to observe, or snake skins in in the centre.

Literacy Centre – This centre allows children to explore literacy concepts — how letters look, how they compare to each other, how they combine to form words, how we make meaning using symbols. Reading visual images and sharing literature of different genre.

Mathematics and Manipulate Centre – this area in the preschool is focussed on learning more about shapes, colours, numbers, quantities, and assists in developing fine motor skills.

Puzzles and Games Centre – This is a space to work on puzzles or play games together. Fun, cooperative play!

Secondary Sport

Maximising Wellbeing & Minimising Risk

The Sport Department is working closely with the Redlands Executive to observe all guidance from the Association of Independent Schools of NSW, as we seek to safely maximise sporting opportunities for our students in 2022, (concurrently minimising the potential for Covid transmission).

Our approach to planning for the safest possible resumption of Sports Activities includes:

Training and Fixtures

  • Maximising use of well-ventilated or outdoor venues
  • Limit attendee numbers for indoor venues to support physical distancing and ventilation requirements.
  • Limiting visitors (such as spectators or audiences)
  • Wear masks indoors when not participating in sport and use of masks in situations where physical distancing is not possible, and contact is sustained.
  • Scheduling training and fixtures across multiple courts/playing spaces to minimise mingling and maximise ventilation.
  • Encourage participants to bring their own equipment (particularly water bottles, towels and clothing) where possible.
  • Minimise the number of players per team and maximise the play space where possible.
  • Avoiding handshakes/high-fives to reduce contact
  • Reduce the use of changing rooms by asking students to come ready to participate.
  • Where equipment is being shared, increase cleaning and hygiene control measures (e.g. sanitising balls between plays or games).

Transport and Travel

  • Private use transport (chartered coaches) or walking to reduce mingling with the general
  • Enforce mask requirements on public transport and aircraft (plus associated waiting areas).

Our Risk Management strategies adhere to the AIS guidance and allow for our programs to resume across 7-12.

Please click on this link to access the Redlands – Covid-19 Sport Protocols for this Saturday. This document will provide you with an overview of the current protocols that are in place at each of the Redlands home sporting venues. The Sports Administrators will communicate with families directly on the requirement in place at ‘away’ venues each week.

Participation and Exemption

  • If there is a reason why your child is unable to participate in their scheduled Sports training or Fixtures during Week 2, please directly email Alison Cox, Head of Secondary School Sport acox@redlands.nsw.edu.au by 3.00pm on Monday 14 February.

Mask-Wearing

  • Mask-wearing is required when traveling between sports venues and on school grounds (this includes students walking or traveling by bus to or from school).
  • Secondary School students must always wear masks at indoor sports venues when not exercising, including in change room and bathroom facilities.

Change-Rooms and Uniform

  • In order to minimise large groups of students mixing in changing rooms, students have permission to wear their PE uniform to school on days they have Sport training.

Representative Sport

  • Students whose Representative Sport training session is not scheduled on Thursday afternoon will be dismissed from school at 2.30pm.
  • If your child is unable to attend any of their scheduled sessions, please contact the appropriate Sports Administrator (contact details listed below).
  • Sport Specific information is also available to families on the Secondary School Sports Page on Redlands Pulse.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Wet Weather

General

In the event that training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 8-12)

In order to limit student mixing indoors, Students in Year 8-12 who are dismissed at the end of Period 5 are required to go directly home. Sport coaches and Redlands staff will supervise their COVID-safe departure.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 7)

In the event that year 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.10pm and participate in cohort-based activities.

Thursday afternoon – early departure (Year 8-12)

As we attempt to limit student mixing indoors, there will be no classroom supervision for students who do not have any scheduled sport training on a Thursday afternoon. Therefore, students who do not have training on Thursday afternoon will have permission to leave early.

Representative Sport

Touch Football

It was a great day out at Macquarie University on Saturday morning with some light showers making the middle timeslot an entertaining fixture between all the players. The ISA draw has been released and is available on Redlands Pulse – Touch Football.  A reminder however that the Redlands Rhino will have the most up-to-date fixtures and will be uploaded each Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure you check this prior to the games on Saturday.

Team Selections

We will be using this weekend’s fixtures to finalise the team selections, some teams there might be slight adjustments to in future weeks.

Playing & Training Uniform

Players are reminded they need to be wearing Redlands Sports Uniform to training and to games (with the Redlands Touch Football singlets on game days). Students who do not wear the appropriate uniform will be issued with school uniform infringement notice.

Basketball

We hope that all basketball students and parents are looking forward to the first round of games this Saturday 12 February. A reminder that the most up to date fixtures can be found under the Redlands Rhino tab on Redlands Pulse. This link will be updated by Tuesday afternoon of each week in the lead up to the Saturday fixtures. Please ensure you are checking the Redlands Rhino carefully for any changes in the week leading up to your Saturday game.

We ask that all players arrive to the venue 30 minutes prior to the start time indicated on the fixture for their game dressed in their Redlands Basketball uniform (students are not to wear any non-Redlands attire).

If you have not yet collected a Basketball singlet from the Sports Department, please ensure you are doing so before the games on Saturday.

Best of luck to all our teams this weekend in the first round of 2022 ISA Sport.

Sailing

Last week our sailors faced challenging weather conditions courtesy of La Niña. On Thursday, our sailors remained on shore and worked on their sailing theory and fitness due to strong winds. They also took part and won the inaugural Capture the Flag Championships against the RSYS sailors and coaches. On Saturday our sailors braved the windy conditions, racing against each other in up to 30 knots of wind.

Tennis

After a great first week back to school and training last week, we are only days away from the first round of the Term 1 Summer NSTA and TNB competitions on Saturday 12 February.

A reminder to take time to read through the most recent update that has been sent out to all tennis students and parents, as the competition draw, team lists and training groups have all been posted both in the update and on Redlands Pulse.

Playing Pairs for Round 1 will be posted before Friday. If you and your team haven’t filled out the google form, please do so as soon as possible.

If your child is unable to attend their scheduled competition matches, please email Luke Jeffery before 12pm on Friday

Please join me in wishing the Tennis students all the best for their upcoming matches this weekend!

Rowing

Last weekend saw our girls attend their first regatta for the season, the Roseville College Regatta at Iron Cove.

The Yr 8 Girls hit the water first in some small boats with some very promising results in both the single and double sculls. A huge achievement considering that this was their first ever regatta. Some significant results included 2nd places for Jess Smith and Lara Doyle along with Elizabeth Whelan and Katie Budden in the double sculls while Scarlett Cortes, Ruby Warner and Lucy Maher all finished in 2nd place. It was Rosie Garcia-Wood who won her division in the single scull in an outstanding race.

The 1st crew of Mikaela Sangar Larsson, Briar Carter, Georgia Verschoor, Elizabeth Holtheuer and Charlotte Harman and the 2nd crew of Emma Sullivan, Charlotte Scamps, Emma Canton, Cat Croll and Zoe Naismith also both placed 2nd in their respective divisions and will be keen to improve for this weekend’s NSW State Champs.

Unfortunately at this point the regatta was called off with excessive wind and no further racing took place.

This weekend will see our Yr 8 boys attend their first regatta for the season along with Yr 9 and Seniors racing at the NSW State Championships.

Fitness Centre

With Sport well and truly back up and running, the Redlands Fitness Centre will again be open for students across Term 1. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday–Friday and start promptly at 6.30am. We have had brilliant numbers across the sessions with over 100 students coming through the doors across the week.

In addition, starting from next week, the Fitness Centre will also be open to all students across Monday and Wednesday afternoon. These afternoon sessions will be targeted towards specific areas of development such as speed, power and flexibility. For all of our Winter Representative Athletes, the Monday afternoon session will be focused on power and explosive speed.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

Trainer of the Week

Our Redlands Trainer of the Week for Term 1 Week 2 is Isaac Brookes. Isaac is not only a brilliant runner and representative athlete for Redlands but he is also one of our hardest trainers. Attending three sessions last week, Isaac worked through specific workouts designed to build more strength and power as he builds towards the athletic season. Congratulations Isaac!

Junior Sport

Students, both new and returning, are congratulated for both their enthusiasm and their diligence in following the numerous tasks required of them in these last two weeks, in particular during our Representative Sport Trials and on our first Wednesday Sport Day which we conducted for nearly all our sports under wet conditions. With Round 1 of Summer Sport upon us this Saturday it is an exciting time for all involved. Draws are online, the first of many optional skills session’s trainings have been well attended, the draw has been uploaded, uniforms have been purchased so we are all ready to go. Redland’s students are expected to be at the venue 30min before the start time listed for adequate warm up and instructions.

From a communication point of view, families have received a number of emails from Junior Sport this year. All live links for registration, confirmation of Winter Sport, sign up documents are all available on the Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here so please make it part of your routine to regularly check this site for updates and information.

As outlined last week, the draw (Saturday morning matches) for coaches, parents and staff will be ‘live’ in nature and will be available via this link which allows you to filter the draw by sport and even team. Sport draws and changes are never emailed to parents and due to changes, that may come through please do not print out. When changes to times and or grounds come through from host schools during the week these will automatically update this draw on your device. I have also included the addresses of the venues within the host school to save time and stress once you arrive at a venue with 25 playing fields and you have to find Field 1b. Please spend some time navigating and saving this document on your phone or device

This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sport Team Movement

In regards to Representative Sport the aim is to make the process more transparent for all parties as unexplained team movements sometimes cause unnecessary stress. At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY             in direct comparison to other students across the sport

ATTENDANCE   any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE         this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

2022 Summer Sport Team Lists

Winter Sport Selection

As per the email sent to all families last week despite not having commenced Round 1 of Summer Sport the association that we belong to (IPSHA) will shortly require our numbers and team submissions for the 2022 Winter Sport Season that commences. We require ALL parents to complete this registration form for your child so we can ensure all Junior School students have been allocated to a sport for Wednesday Sport for Winter. Due date is Friday 11 Feb to secure your first preference.

By completing the form you are submitting your child’s preferences for their Winter Sport for Term 2 2022. There are a variety of options available to all students from Year 3 to Year 6 in representative sport or non-representative sport.

In summary you can do either of the following;

(1) Choose a Non-Representative Sport where your child only has a commitment in school hours being Wednesday Sport (1:30pm to 3:20pm) with no Saturday involvement.

(2) Choose a Representative Sport where your child has a commitment on both Wednesday (training during school hours) and Saturday (competitive matches against other schools around Sydney)

Winter Representative Sport has a Saturday morning commitment to it with matches taking place Saturday morning (an hour commitment anywhere between 7.30am and finishing by 11.30am at the latest). Please keep this mind as you complete this form. Winter sport for both Rep and Non-Rep commences Term 1, Week 8  (Wednesday 17 March) and for most sport runs for 12  weeks over Terms 2 and 3.This process of Winter Sport Selection via Google Forms is the only method of registration.

To assist you in your  selection and for more information relating to each sport, the costs, involvements and commitment please refer to Redlands Pulse- Junior School- Winter Sport.

Music

We’re off and music-making!

Hundreds of private lessons launched across P-12 this week alongside new Rock Bands and Musicianship classes. Enthusiasm was matched by tutors, teachers and students alike!  It has been a joy to hear music ringing out again across the school, with all our mitigations in place to ensure it can do so as safely as possible.

Curriculum classes are also in full swing also with Junior Campus Curriculum Ensembles now launched in support of our other class learning goals. Yr 2 students were very excited to be allocated their string instruments (Violins & Celli) this week. (Parents/carers of Yr 2 – please ensure you have returned the instrument loan permission online by Monday in order for students to receive their instrument to take home). Yr 4 and Yr 5 students will have their Instrumental Program instruments assigned very soon. Ms Moses will communicate further information shortly.

Extra-Curricular Lessons

It’s not too late to sign up for private tuition, and though fast filling, many of our tutors have some vacancies left in their lesson rotations. To learn more about the instruments we offer, please see the Music page on Pulse.

Learning Snapshot

This week’s learning snapshot is from Ms Stephanie McInnes’ Yr 1 Instrumental lesson – where students enjoyed playing “If you’re happy and you know it”.  This image is nicely reciprocated with an image of Mr Joseph Montz’ Yr 7 students demonstrating their aural understanding on the xylophone as they launch into their Australian Rock Music unit.

In the Prep Music Room, a new statement of our learning intention adorns the wall. Thank you Mrs Sue Anderson and Ms Dimi Walker for taking such care to create thoughtful learning spaces.

Friends of Music Meeting – 24 February 2022

Parents and Community Members are warmly invited to jump on a Zoom session for our ‘Friends of Music’ launch for 2022 via Zoom at 7pm.  Our mantra for the year is ‘just give what’s in your hand’.  There are wonderful things ahead, and we look forward to creating exciting moments for us all to share within Redlands’ Music experiences throughout 2022.

Events

These are listed on Pulse and will be updated periodically to reflect the year ahead.

Advanced Ensemble Auditions – JUNIOR

Audition forms for Junior Chamber Ensemble and Junior Concert Band can be found on Pulse. These auditions will take place in Week 3 – please read the audition form for further details. Auditions for Junior Voices will be conducted later in Term 1.

Advanced Ensemble Auditions – SENIOR

Another round of Advanced Senior Ensemble auditions will be facilitated via video upload to the ‘Auditions’ page on iLearn in the week ahead. The closing date for auditions has been extended to 5pm on Friday 18th February for this round.  Students should prepare a video of a solo piece (2 minutes excerpt maximum) on their instrument, and some technical work to demonstrate their readiness for the rigour of the Advanced Ensembles.
