Issue 19 2023 Term 2 Week 9 - 22 Jun 2023

From the Principal

Little actions can make a big difference.

This is a sentiment I have often shared with students throughout my educational career and which was brought home for our Yr 8 students and me at a special assembly on Tuesday where they heard from Gemma Sisia, Enock Emphriam and Maddie Kelly from the School of St Jude in Tanzania. The School of St Jude provides a free, high quality education to students who are living in poverty in Tanzania and has had a significant positive impact not just for the current students, but for their alumni and the wider community in Tanzania, as well. (You can read more about the School of St Jude here.)

The School of St Jude started just over twenty years ago because its founder, Gemma Sisia, had vision and a desire to fight poverty in Africa through education. She started by requesting donations from her local community in Australia and her first donation was $10. The school opened in 2002 with three students. Now it educates 1800 students each year. We’re proud that we have a long history in supporting Gemma’s work with the School of St Jude.

Little actions can make a big difference.

I am thrilled to see that before our Yr 12 students celebrate together at their formal tomorrow night, they will spend the morning partaking in a “Give Back Day” where they will participate in a range of service activities, giving back and giving thanks to the Redlands and local communities who have supported them over the last six years. Some of the activities they will be involved in are:

  • Performing musical pieces for the residents of the Bougainvillea Retirement Village
  • Teaching French language at the Neutral Bay Community Centre
  • Assisting the Property Services and Maintenance team around the campus
  • Connecting and engaging with Preparatory and Junior School students through activities on the Junior Campus
  • Leading the Winter Woolies Appeal fundraising initiative.

It is a wonderful initiative by Yr 12 to finish the term and further embeds our values of Compassion, Respect and Responsibility.

Little actions can make a big difference.

Finally, tomorrow I will be speaking to Secondary School students in their end of term assemblies about the importance of gratitude and the power of a simple thank you.

In that spirit, I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to all members of the Redlands community who have supported me over these past six months and made my first semester as Principal so enjoyable, in particular, the Board for their guidance; the parents for their partnership; the staff for their commitment; and the students for bringing their joy to the campus each day. It truly is a privilege to lead this amazing School.

I hope you and your families are able to enjoy some quality time together over this break, and I look forward to seeing the students return to campus on Tuesday 18 July for the commencement of Term 3.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Community Update

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the second term of school.  A big thank you to the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) and all of our Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) who continue to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life.

We are fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong and generous tradition of service and giving. Parents and friends of the School proudly support the enrichment of our students’ lives in many ways, through regular donations and by giving one of the most special gifts of all – their time. Thank you to our families and friends who have supported our current Annual Appeal through making a tax-deductible donation. This year’s appeal provides the opportunity to play an important part in the future of the School through your consideration of support within two major causes – the expansion of our High Country Campus and the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship. Thank you for your consideration and support.

There are still tickets available for the highly anticipated Redlands Gala Ball, and a reminder that all proceeds from this gala fundraising event will benefit the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship Appeal. For more information on tickets and sponsorship of this uniquely Redlands event, along with information on our Annual Giving program, please visit the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

My thanks to the Redlands Parent and Friends Association Executive Team for their assistance in delivering our recent second hand uniform sale. This initiative enables us to recycle uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support this term and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful mid-year break with your family.

It is that exciting part of the year where we start turning our attention to the special events that are in the diaries for the Academy.

Solo Soirée | 28 July | Redlands Hall

The first event for term 3 is our Solo Soirée on 28 July at 6.30pm in Redlands Hall. This informal event is for students who have been working on solos or duets at the Academy, and a chance for them to perform in a non-competitive forum. All parents and fellow students are welcome to come along to give support. Further details will be up on Pulse on the first week of Term 3.

RAD Exams & Class Awards | Date TBC

The second round of RAD exams & class awards will be happening toward the end of August (date to be confirmed by RAD). These are for our Yr 1 – Yr 6 students and seniors. Please make sure to practise over the holidays.

Dance Awards | 5 September | Norths in Cammeray

The Dance Awards this year celebrate 25 years of Dance at Redlands and promises to be an unforgettable night filled with laughter, joy, and dance. This is a compulsory event for all senior Academy and Curriculum Dance students, and we will be asking you to fill in permission slips during the first week of next term. We are thrilled that awards will be presented to Yr 7s this year.

Make sure to put the 5 September in your diaries!

Tickets: information on how to buy your tickets will be available soon.

Rehearsal: there will be a final rehearsal on Saturday 2 September 3-6pm in studio P1.9. Further details to follow.

End of Year Performance (EoYP)

As the End of Year Performance (EoYP) becomes our main focus, we will be asking all students to work on their attendance. We will be monitoring this very closely during Term 3 and will need everyone to be vigilant about notifying the office if you cannot make any of your classes by completing our ABSENTEE FORM

If you have more than two absences, we will be asking for medical certificates, and it may jeopardise your position in the show.

The EoYP this year comes as a Triple Bill which will showcase all genres of dance.

Les Sylphides: loosely based on Fokine’s beautiful one act ballet with music by Chopin

Still Life at Penguin Café: our Contemporary piece which is inspired by David Bintley’s masterpiece with music by the Simon Jeffes

The Oscars: brining together Jazz, Tap and Hip Hop in a fun spectacle to complete the evening

There will be three performances at The Concourse in Chatswood:

15 November 7pm: Juniors
16 November 5pm: Prep
16 November 7pm: Seniors

Please note that although performances are aimed at Prep, Junior and Senior Year Groups, there will be dancers who will be involved in all performances. This will make more sense when the casting is announced at the beginning of next term.

Reflection from excursion to Yuldea – Bangarra Dance Theatre

By Alyssa Tinetti

On Tuesday 20 June, the 10-12 dance elective cohort travelled to Gadigal Country, the Sydney Opera House, to watch Bangarra Dance Theatre’s new production Yuldea. Yuldea is choreographed by new Artistic Director, Frances Rings, and is a ceremonial affirmation of the history and heritage of the Anangu people of the Great Victorian Desert; exploring the moment traditional life collided with the industrial ambition of a growing nation, as the Transcontinental Railway invaded the land in 1917. Then, atomic testing at Maralinga took place, forcing the Anangu people to leave their desert homelands, where they had resided for millennia.

The hour-long work is elevated by the innovative set design by Elizabeth Gadsby, with layered curtains of streamers suspended from the ceiling, that stunningly mirror the lighting shifts throughout the work.
The choreography in Yuldea was different to what we’ve seen from Bangarra in previous excursions, with the performance starting with the dancers completing sharp shivering motions, and forming unique geometric shapes through complicated lifting and partnerwork sequences. The company’s female dancers then mimic a flock of birds, performing strutting actions and bird-like head motions. The male dancers then enter as dingoes where they complete duets inspired by the Kapi spirit and the red mallee eucalypt.

In the third act, the performance changes from its shimmering water-like background to a destructive red wall as the performance transforms to portray the destruction of the land due to the development of the Transcontinental Railway. During this section, all of the student were glued to their seat with eyes popping out of their heads, as the dancers were dragged across the stage by rubber bands, choking and hurting them to reflect the devastation of the land and people due to industrialisation. This demolition culminates in the ‘Black Mist’ scene, representative of the UK’s atomic testing in Maralinga. The piece features a solo dancer in the spotlight, covered in ash as black flakes pour down, the dancer spasms on the ground, covering his face whilst completing complicated floorwork choreography. The piece concludes as the dancers perform as a group, celebrating the enduring kinship ties that pass on the Yuldea spirit.

As a collective, we were all amazed by this performance, awestruck by everything from the costumes, lighting, set design, choreography and performances of each dancer; our bus ride was abundant with excited debriefs and opinions on the work. It is important for us as dancers to see how magnificently Bangarra portrays stories, and conveys their intentions through choreography, certainly inspirational for everyone’s future compositions. Seeing Bangarra also allows us to view dance rooted in an unfamiliar culture, this differing intention from performances by other major companies, and by ourselves, gives us new perspective on dance as a storytelling artform and helps us grow as dancers of a diverse, interconnected world. We have all grown to really love and appreciate our Bangarra visits, and hope that as the younger elective students continue with their studies, they get to grow as we have through viewings of Bangarra’s performances.

On behalf of the cohort, I can confidently say that seeing Yuldea was a night we will never forget.

Curriculum Dance Showcase | Year 8 – 10 – 26 July | Year 11+12 HSC+IB – 27 July | Redlands Hall

All are welcome. Further details will be available in Week 1 of Term 3.

Head of Secondary School

With the wonderful Senior Music Festival taking place last week, the end of Term 2 has been significant, full of activity and collaboration between students, staff and community members. It has certainly been a big term of academic learning for all of our students and the Semester One reports will be published to parents in the first week of the holidays. By all accounts the students excelled in their capacity to lead student conversations in the Student-Led Conferences this term, and we will be shifting into a higher gear when we return in Term 3 for the Yr 12 Trial Examinations, Yr 11 leadership interviews and the latter stages of learning for students in Yr 7, 8, 9 and 10. I trust you have some great plans for the holidays and the students are able to use the time to relax and replenish.

Congratulations to Taylor Riddell (Yr 12)

Taylor has been announced as one of the five national winners in the Australian Economics Olympiad 2023. The level of competition this year was incredibly high, with students of Economics from all around Australia competing in the event, making this accomplishment even more remarkable.

As the national winner, Taylor is now invited to join the Australasian Economics Competition (AAEO), where she will compete with national economics Olympiad winners from other countries. This exciting event promises to bring together exceptional talents from across the region who will be participating in a range of different activities, including a visit to the Reserve Bank of Australia. This unique experience will allow Taylor to showcase her skills on an international stage while fostering cross-cultural exchange and collaboration.

The School That Hope Built

On Tuesday, Yr 8 had the privilege of hearing from Gemma Sisia who shared her experiences of supporting children in Tanzania through her leadership of St Jude’s school. She was travelling with Enock, a graduate of 2015, and Madeleine Kelly, who authored Gemma’s story in her recently published book The School that Hope Built.

Together the three shared stories about St Jude’s, the students who attend the school and the impact of education on individuals and the community. Our Yr 8 students were interested to hear that all students who attend St Jude’s do so under scholarship and must meet examination and poverty requirements in order to be eligible to attend. A water tap or electricity in the family home would make a student ineligible to attend. Yr 8 were also pleased to hear that in the first cohort of 60 students to graduate in 2015, 10 of these students went on to study medicine and become doctors. Perhaps most profound in terms of benefits to the community is the process of giving back. Each graduate of St Jude’s goes on to work as a teacher for one year in a local government school in Tanzania. After they graduate from high school, they get three weeks holiday before returning to engage with a two-week crash course in teaching. They are then posted to government schools where they often have to teach up to 80 students in a classroom.

It was wonderful that the Chair of the Redlands Board, Mrs Glenda Mc Loughlin could join us for this presentation. Glenda sponsors a student at St Jude’s who will graduate in the coming three years. Gemma kindly invited Glenda to Tanzania for this student’s graduation and I am hoping that Mr Corcoran gives his approval for some of our current Yr 8 students to travel with her!

Yr 12 Give Back Day

The Yr 12 Give Back Day aims at promoting our Redlands values of empathy, compassion and kindness. Yr 12 will participate in a range of service activities, giving back and giving thanks to the Redlands and local Cremorne community who have supported Yr 12 over the last six years. The Give Back Day will allow Yr 12 to look beyond themselves; particularly on the day of their Yr 12 Formal (where it is all about them), and understand the meaning of servant leadership through helping others and being grateful for the support, connection and privileged life they have had throughout their six years at Redlands.

For the Give Back Service Activity, Yr 12 will be splitting up into mixed groups and will undertake one of the following activities:

  • Vocal and Instrumental Performances at the Bougainvillea Retirement Village (11 – 12pm)
  • French Speaking at the Neutral Bay Community Centre (10:30 – 12:30pm)
  • Assisting the Property and Maintenance team with maintenance around the Secondary School (will assist with chair set up in the gym for the Give Back presentation (Period 1) and packing up of chairs in Redlands Hall and locker cleanout. (10:30 – 12:30pm)
  • Learning and engagement with students at Redlands House, Prep and Junior School. (11:00am – 12:30pm)
  • The Winter Woolies Appeal, a fundraising initiative which included a Hot Chocolate stand this morning with all proceeds going towards the organisation ‘Rough Edges’, as well as the sorting of donated blankets and winter items of clothing on Friday and distributed to St Vincent De Paul, The Salvation Army and Matthew Talbot.

Last Term of Yr 11 HSC Preliminary Course and IB Diploma Programme

Believe it or not, this cohort has already successfully completed two terms of the three term Yr 11 program. Students have spent a lot of time sorting out their study schedule, recognising the need for organisation and learning to create strong study resources. Students have managed their increase in expectations and rigour extremely well and they will continue to navigate their best course of action through next term as they prepare for Yr 12. Moreover, students have also expanded their leadership skills and they have started truly seeing themselves as leaders in the School. This is essential for the cohort to feel ownership over their studies, responsibility in their peer relationships and pride in their school as they continue to grow in their SEL development.

This three week break is well-earned and needed. Yr 11 will return for one more term with a lead up to an Examination Block in Wk 7 Term 3. Students are encouraged to use this break to rest and recover. However, they are also expected to catch up on any missed tasks, complete outstanding home learning, organise and write their own study notes and begin to plan out Term 3 in preparation for the Yearly Examinations.

We wish all families a fantastic term break and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday 18 July.

World Oceans Day Student Reflections

Several Yr 11 students participated in the World Oceans event in Wk 7. It was a meaningful experience for those involved. See four reflections written by Ashley Stapleton, Alisha Tang and Eva Osborn.

I, along with a few other Year 11 students, had the opportunity to be involved in an interschools event that celebrated World Oceans Day. This day is about informing the public about the impact human actions have on the ocean and proposing suitable initiatives. I was interested in this event because I wanted to understand how we can create a more environmentally friendly ocean and help support marine life that are being endangered by human impact. From the presentation, I was able to realise that being environmentally friendly isn’t about changing your whole lifestyle. Instead, it’s swapping your unsustainable products for sustainable ones, for example, plastic cotton swabs to bamboo ones. In addition, I was also able to understand that a lack of knowledge and awareness exists among most people about ocean pollution and its causes. For our school and wider school community, encouraging ways to incorporate environmentally friendly and sustainable ways of living every day. Creating more awareness about World Oceans Day and how we can make the swap to a sustainable life sound like a terrific goal so future generations can experience the wonder of our oceans.

– Ashley Stapleton

World Oceans Day provided students with the opportunity to collaborate with students from different schools towards building a solution in respect to issues that we had discussed in break out rooms following a panel discussion as well as a viewing of the film Rubber Jellyfish. Personally, I was very interested in the diverse perspectives that were displayed throughout our conversations with the students from other schools. It was interesting to see how the backgrounds and communities that the students came from were influencing their perspectives on the topics discussed, consequently expanding my own perspective. Furthermore, the opportunity to listen to numerous speakers and presentations displayed to me the variety of ways that people are fighting these issues, as well as what we can do to help. I believe we can incorporate some of these ideas moving forward by collaborating with other world schools to expand the reach of our projects. Some ideas proposed were collaborative beach clean-ups and/or providing information to our communities collectively to continually educate the public towards the issues and topics discussed, as well as continued discussions within the student body to continue to work towards a solution.

– Alisha Tang

I found the event incredibly inspiring. The main message was clear: our ideas and efforts as young people matter. The panel speakers showcased various ways in which they have initiated positive change, from Sarah-Jo collecting local beach trash data to Zali advocating for environmental laws, Tim designing art for sustainable straws and Kal speaking on environmental Youth Councils. Other content focused on the harmful impact of released balloons, particularly in the ocean where turtles mistake them for jellyfish, their food source. This helped expand my perspective on where our waste goes. One highlight was the small group discussions with students from other schools, where we collaboratively brainstormed strategies for a more sustainable future. I believe we can implement some of these ideas at Redlands, such as house recycling competitions, encouraging reusable mugs instead of plastic cups and promoting environmentally friendly choices like soap bars and sustainable clothing brands, because small changes over time make big differences.

– Eva Osborn

Push-Up Challenge

There are a few days left until the Push-Up Challenge is over and we would love to pass $8,000 in donations towards mental health. We need your support to make this possible! The Redlands Community has completed over 90,000 push ups, so support your teachers, friends, peers and yourselves for contributing towards this wonderful cause.

Last week, Nick Hudson, Chief of Push-Ups, flew out to Sydney from Perth to visit schools participating in the Push-Up Challenge. He spent time meeting those students who have been working to organise this event across the school and to incite enthusiasm and provide a reason for why students should participate in push-ups for mental health. Pictured below is Nick with our two Yr 11 student ambassadors, Daisy Thomas and Jaiden Confessore. These two Yr 11 students started organising this event early in Term 1 along with Grace Durrant, Johnny Wang, Jack Petering, Eva Osborn and Flynn Kieran. This event hit the ground running in Term 2. Thank you to Daisy, Jaiden and the team for all their hard work in pulling this event together!

Thank you all, for your participation this month!

Extreme Dance Competition

Last Sunday, Yr 11 student Ashley Stapleton performed in the Senior Contemporary Performance Group, where they received 3rd place in the High School Contemporary Troupe section out of 17 entrants! There were some significant cast changes from the last competition, and Ashley adapted to these changes commendably.

Additionally, Maddie Lamport, Tiana Vatandoust, and Josie Bannon performed in the Senior Jazz Performance Group 2 in the High School Jazz Troupe section. The performance was incredibly done and students are commended for their amazing and hard work!

Student News

These holidays, Jayden Hannaford will be attending the International Children’s Games (ICG) in Korea for 3v3 Basketball, one of the most popular and exciting sports worldwide. A commendable selection, and a reflection of Jayden’s talent and dedication to his sport, a dynamic and fast-paced variation of basketball.

During the ICG 2023, the 3v3 Basketball competitions will serve as a platform for young athletes to demonstrate their individual and collective skills, while also promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play. The tournament will bring together talented players from different countries, allowing them to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and develop friendships that transcend borders.

We congratulate Jayden on his selection and wish him every success with the tournament.

Dance – Extreme Dance Competition.

On Sunday 18 June, the Senior Contemporary Performance Group, Year 10 students, Louis Abrahams, Imogen Jeffery-Billich and Amber Hosker showcased their talent and secured an impressive 3rd place in the High School Contemporary Troupe category. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as they competed against 17 other participants.

Furthermore, a group comprising Louis Abrahams, Imogen Jeffery-Billich, Amber Hosker, Chloe Scamps, Sofia Vincent, Soleil Burmeister, Amynta Field and Alicia Green took part in the Senior Jazz Performance Group 2 under the High School Jazz Troupe category. Although they didn’t win a placement, their performance was praiseworthy.

Dance holds immense value for students, offering a multitude of benefits and teaching valuable life skills. Through dance, students develop physical fitness, and they learn discipline, commitment, and time management, setting goals and practicing regularly. Dance nurtures self-expression, creativity, and imagination, allowing students to convey emotions and explore their artistic abilities. Confidence, self-esteem, and stage presence are bolstered through performances, while collaboration and teamwork skills are cultivated through group dances. The Year 10 students showcased their exceptional talent and put in tremendous effort. It was a pleasure to witness their dedication and hard work.

Whether it’s a family vacation or a quiet staycation, I hope this break brings you the opportunity to recharge your batteries and come back refreshed and ready for Semester 2.

We would also like to share some thoughts on preparing for the new term ahead. As such, I encourage you to use this break as a time to start preparing for the new term.

Here are a few tips that might help:

  • Review progress: Take some time to review your child’s academic progress from the past term. Celebrate their achievements and identify areas that need improvement. Work with your child to come up with strategies for addressing any challenges they might face.
  • Set goals: Sit down with your child and discuss their academic goals for the next term. Encourage them to set specific and realistic targets and help them come up with a plan to achieve them.
  • Plan for extracurricular activities: Discuss with your child any extracurricular activities they might want to pursue in the next term. Plan ahead and make arrangements for any necessary equipment or transportation.
  • Set a schedule: In the second half of the break, encourage your child to start waking up and going to bed at regular times to help them readjust to school routines.

We want to ensure that your child starts Term 3 on the right foot. As always, we are committed to providing the best possible learning experience for your child. We look forward to working together to make the upcoming term a success.

Yr 9 Excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum

On Tuesday the whole Yr 9 cohort went to the Sydney Jewish Museum as part of a joint History and Christian Studies excursion to learn about both the Holocaust and Jewish faith. Students had lectures on both areas and heard from a survivor before spending time exploring the museum in small groups.

One group was fortunate to meet Paul Drexler, a survivor of both Auschwitz and Theresienstadt. Born in 1938 in Slovakia, he was transported at age 6 and in 1945 saw his father for the last time. He came to Australia with his mother and the two blankets she had grabbed before they were taken from their home. It is these blankets that kept him warm during the five days he spent in the cattle train being taken between camps.

When he arrived in Australia in 1948, he was warmly greeted by children at school and learned that it doesn’t matter where you come from or what you look like, what faith or culture you follow, we are all humans.

During question time he was asked when he knew he wanted to share his story with others. Paul responded “I want people to know that only 7% of Jewish children survived the Holocaust. 1.5million children and 6 million people were murdered because of hate.” He has spoken at the museum every Tuesday for 35 years so that the children of today might learn to respond in kindness and love to each other.

Yr 9 Student Arnhem Land Reflections

In our final end of term assembly on Friday, Frankie Richardson and David Abineno will address the school to reflect and share their experiences in Arnhem Land. Here is a copy of their reflections:

Frankie: Thank you and good afternoon to teachers and students. My name is Frankie and I am joined by David today to reflect on the opportunity we had to immerse ourselves in a different culture on our trip to Arnhem Land. The words we share were very difficult to choose and put together because of how amazing the trip was, and how many aspects of it there were.

David: On Wednesday the men and women were separated and brought to different areas of the camp as Frankie has already told you the men were taken to the spear and fire making part of the camp while the women went to do weaving and healing.

The first thing we did is make our spear throwers or as the Yolngu call them – galpus. We were first told that the galpu is a symbol of a boy becoming a man and all the boys received one. My galpu is slightly different to the other boys’ Galpus in my year as mine in my opinion has more meaning. When the boys were done making their galpus I was not so fortunate. My galpu was not carved correctly so I needed to wait for it to be carved the right way to be able to throw the spears without breaking it. I sat down with one of the elders named Kevin and another named Michael. I learned that they were brothers and I learnt a lot about the Yolngu culture from them. In the end Kevin spoke to his brother and told him to go and get something. At the time I did not know what it was and I did not really pay attention. I asked where he was going and Kevin told me that it was a surprise and that I would find out in a bit. A few minutes later Kevin and I got to talking a lot and he even called me his best friend. When Michael came back Kevin told me to close my eyes and not to open them until he told me to.

Frankie: I’m not here to tell you what your trip to Arnhem Land was or what it will be like, because that is for you to experience, if you haven’t already. I want to tell you about my experience I had and what I learnt from my time there.

Something very impactful to me was the women’s business. This was a culturally immersive experience with just the Yolngu women, and the women and girls from Redlands. We were asked to share our problems with a Yolngu woman, who then healed us with bush medicine which was oils from leaves through massage. For me this wasn’t just a physical experience, it was also very emotional. I felt like I had connected on another level with not only the woman who healed me, but with my friends and girls in my year. It helped me see the power in vulnerability, which we don’t appreciate much in our society. I was also amazed how the Yolngu community willingly welcomed us onto their land, taught us, and even went as far as healing us and wanting to help us with our injuries and problems. The kindness and community they shared was genuine and something I struggle to put into words. To attempt to put it simply, the healing was something I have never experienced before and there is nothing I can compare it to now, but I left it feeling free-er and a different version of myself.

Another experience that was extremely impactful to me was a workshop we did with a woman named Tash. This workshop completely altered my thinking about myself and my place in the world. Tash made me realise how privileged I am, and how much change I can and need to make. I learnt that it isn’t our fault if we have never been taught about aboriginal history or culture, but it is our fault if we don’t go out into the world and take the learning that is so readily available for us. The Yolngu are sharing their culture with open arms, welcoming us, and if we don’t take that opportunity, it is our fault. We don’t have to look far for information, and this is what is needed if we want to move forward from the past and make positive change.

Overall, this camp helped me connect to a culture I originally didn’t know much about, and taught me not only information about the people, but how connections with others can teach us more than any schoolbook can.

Term 2 is always a big term!

I hope that over the next three weeks that students (and their parents) have a restful break from the daily routines of schooling and come back refreshed and ready for Term 3.

As reports will be released over the next couple of days this is also a good time to reflect on the first half of the year. It is important to remember that when looking at these reports that they reflect a snapshot of progress at a specific point in time and are designed to help in the formation of goals for the future.

Uniform and Grooming in Term 3

A general reminder that when we return our expectations for full winter uniform and grooming (haircut, make-up, nails, etc) are available in the student planner and we appreciate parental support with ensuring that these are adhered to from Day 1 of next term.

Special Assembly – The School the Hope Built

On Tuesday, Yr 8 students were invited to attend a special assembly presented by Gemma Sisia, the founder of the School of St Jude in Tanzania. The school has been set up as a private school to cater for students who live in extreme poverty. Students’ fees are paid for by donations to the organization in a scholarship style arrangement. The school has been in operation for 20 years.

Gemma was accompanied by a former student graduate and author Madeline Kelly who recently published a history of the school entitled The School that Hope Built.

Our Yr 8 students sat and listened to a story of a school that started with a $10 donation and had an initial enrolment of three students, which expanded into a school that now spans three campuses and educates thousands of students on a daily basis. It was an incredibly affirming talk that highlighted the power of a single individual to make a significant difference.

Student Spotlight – Dance

Last Sunday a number of Yr 8 Students had a very successful day at Extreme Dance Competition.

Yr 8 students Juliet Whelan, Belle Monty, Amelie Dewar, Liliana Halfen, Izzy Bannon, Lucy Goodsall, Charlotte Algar and Mia Cruttenden performed wonderfully in the Senior Jazz Performance Group 1 and achieved 2nd place in the High School 7-9 Jazz Troupe out of 11 troupes.

Year 7

Week 9 – Term 2 has been a Whirlwind – Holidays, here we come!

Let’s start this week off with a riddle.

Question: what do you get when you jam 11 weeks’ worth of work, events and excitement into 9 weeks?

Answer: Students in a daze (get it, days…). 175 tired students ready for a break to relax and recharge (and then do it all over again in Term 3!)

It has been a busy term. But it has also been a really valuable one. Students have been engaging with how to manage their home learning, navigate busy assessment schedules, and build caring and supportive relationships with their peers and teachers. Of course, we still have a lot of learning to go but there has been some really positive growth amongst the cohort.

Yr 7 continue to grow in confidence as a year group and this was evident in our Monday Year assembly. After a few general announcements, this assembly was all student led. Grace Walker-Barker played some exceptional piano for us, performing a lively piece as Year 7 entered the hall and then playing for everyone Claude Debussy’s First Arabesque – which she will perform next term at Gala Arts (buy your tickets now!!). She was fantastic and one would never guess a twelve year old was playing, given how accomplished her craft.

Joshua Freer also confidently spoke about his recent charity event in Melbourne, ‘Giant Steps’, where he climbed the tallest building in Australia to make money for autism research. He ran up 96 floors or 1700 steps, and was the fastest under 15 competitor, coming 46th out of 533 people. Together the participants made $250,000 for the charity – a phenomenal achievement!

Daisy Mann also spoke to us about her involvement in Girl Guides and how great an activity it has been for developing her confidence and skills in a wide variety of areas. She talked about her experiences at the Jamboree this year, where 1500 girl guides gathered together for a week of adventurous pursuits and bonding activities – her favourite being surfing lessons on the nearby beach.

Ariella Wold also shared photos and footage of her recent high level figure skating at the Hollins Cup. Her graceful movement and athleticism over the ice were spectacular to see.

We were also able to congratulate Jason Gong for being awarded a certificate of achievement by his local member of council from Bennelong, Mr Jerome Laxale, for his participation in international Robotics; and applaud our Year 7 Jazz Troupe Dancers – Ada Grossman, Adabelle Lee, Zoe Murdoch, Emma Foley, Astrid Vincent, Ariella Wold, Phoebe Sun, Freya Carroll and Anabelle Kendrigan – for an excellent performance on the weekend, coming 2nd in the Extreme Dance Competition.

All in all, the assembly was a wonderful recognition of the wide variety of talents, pursuits and skills possessed across our Year 7 cohort! And we will keep encouraging Year 7 students to share their experiences with the cohort, so we can learn more about each other and keep connecting as a year group. And, we even managed to get in some quick group shots together to mark our last assembly of the term. Year 7 even managing to teach me how to take a ‘0.5’ shot (apologies for the blur; it was my first 0.5!)

Tuesday Surprise Party – Happy Birthday Ms Zhang!

On Tuesday, we saw a lovely indicator of the goodwill and care evident and continuing to grow amongst our Year 7 cohort. Our wonderful Tutor, Ms Jessica Zhang, had her birthday this week and, to show their gratitude for all she has done so far this year, her Tutor group threw her a surprise birthday party, full of balloons, lollies, a thoughtful card and a lovely bunch of flowers. It was really touching to see the group coming together to show their recognition for the help and guidance they have received so far this semester.

It’s Wellness Wednesday: so Just Dance!

Wednesday also saw some positive expressions of joy across the cohort through our Wellness Wednesday activities. On these days our Tutors encourage students to engage in activities that will give them a break from the regular routine of school, encouraging them to ‘switch off’ for a bit of time to help support their mental wellbeing. This can sometimes be group yoga, mindfulness meditation, music listening, quiet reading or drawing. A solid crowd favourite is getting up out of their seats and dancing to Just Dance. As you can see from the photos, it is a great way to expend some energy and just have a bit of fun together amidst a sometimes busy school week!

Acting in English

This week several English classes put together short performances of one of their current dramatic texts being studied in class, Blue Beard. Students have been working on exploring the creation of character, setting and morals within fairy tale narratives, and then identifying  how such tales can be dramatised for the stage. Several groups got really ‘hands on’ in this space, thinking about blocking and verbal strategies for performance, before practising and then performing renditions of Blue Beard, a melodramatic thriller where a serial killer husband tries to murder his new wife (all PG-13, of course!) And, while I do not want to spoil the ending, I can let you know that it is a happy one! Students really enjoyed the opportunity to be out and about from their classrooms performing, some using the Fahl Garden, while others made use of one of our Drama Studios.

Gargoyles or Grotesques?

Do you know the difference between a gargoyle and a grotesque? Well, I learned last week from my visit to Yr 7 Visual Arts that while both sculpture types are of monstrous creations, a gargoyle is a decorated waterspout that projects from a roof and carries rainwater away from the walls of a building, protecting it from damage, whilst a grotesque is a decorative carving that has no functional architectural purpose. But it looks pretty cool! There’s a fun trivia fact for you!

So, while I was confident Yr 7 were making gargoyles in Visual Arts, I was respectfully informed they were actually creating grotesques. Once again, the Visual Arts department is doing an amazing job at engaging Yr 7 in a variety of fun, educational tasks. You can see from the photos they were having a great time making their grotesques!

Gratitude for Peer Support

Finally, we ended on a really positive note today. This term in Tutor Time, we have been focused on building respectful relationships across the school and beyond it, really aiming to teach the cohort the importance of kindness and empathy in their interactions with others. Tied to this, we have also been so lucky this semester to have the excellent support of Yr 11 school students as our Peer Support leaders every fortnight on Fridays. They have shared their wisdom and advice with Yr 7, offered their support and been friendly faces across the school, helping Yr 7 adjust to their new Secondary School experience and see what respectful relationships look like.

Tomorrow (Friday) is our last Peer Support session, and so we will be having a fun party as a thank you to all the Peer Support leaders (stay tuned for an article on this next term!) Today, students wrote thank you notes to all their Peer Support leaders, showing appreciation for their time and efforts and kindness in supporting them this semester – a lovely indicator of Yr 7’s growing success in building respectful relationships and expressing their gratitude for the help of others.

Holiday Messages

Jess and I want to wish everyone a lovely holiday break. It has been a busy term, so taking the time to relax and recharge, and spend quality time with friends and family will be important. I want to share the messages I offered to Year 7 in our Year Assembly on Monday about the holiday break. I have copied them below.

During your break:

  • Be kind to others and yourself.
  • You will have some free time so try to help your family, friends and community.
  • Maybe offer to clean the house, cook a meal, help in the garden, tidy your room…
  • Go outside and meet your friends in real life – stay off social media!
  • Rest, relax and recharge so you are ready to do it all over again in Term 3.

Best wishes for a lovely holiday, everyone!!

Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • Week 9: End of Term (Friday 23/6)
  • Term 3: Classes commence (Tues 18/7)

Hugh Zheng – Young Archie Finalist!

Congratulations to Yr 3 student, Hugh Zheng, whose self-portrait has been selected as a finalist in this year’s Young Archie competition. Hugh’s work is currently on display in the Art Gallery of New South Wales where it will be until 3 September and I am looking forward to visiting the exhibition in the upcoming break. The winners will be announced this weekend but simply being a finalist is a significant achievement; well done, Hugh!

2023 Oxford University Computational Challenge

Recently, eleven Yr 5 and Yr 6 Redlands students participated in the Oxford University Computational Challenge, an international challenge designed to help students develop skills to produce programmed solutions to computational thinking problems.

From this, the students’ results have been received and were very impressive. Avisha Sashipal (Yr 6) was awarded a Merit and achieved the highest score in our Junior School and Sasha Grant (Yr 5) achieved the 2nd highest score. All of our students who entered the competition performed well and our Yr 6 students showed remarkable growth in their skills in comparison to their first OUCC last year. Congratulations to Leo Avins, Jackson Humphreys, Max Humphrey, Feargal Lambert, Liam Liang, Charles Li, Antony Vass, Hudson Williams and Zackary Yeh. We look forward to presenting them with their certificates and acknowledging their achievements in our first assembly next term.

Chess Team Success

We are thrilled to share that our Junior School Representative Chess Team has emerged victorious from the Metropolitan Primary Competition, where they competed in the Championship grade this term, showcasing their exceptional skills, strategic thinking and teamwork.

Amidst strong competition, our students: Sebastian Gu, Robi Hamori, Peter Phillipou and Enrico Viese Vivaldi, with support from the reserve team of Hamish Casey, Xavi Clissa, Charlie Halliday and Feargal Lambert, displayed remarkable dedication, sportsmanship, and a true passion for the game. Their hard work, countless hours of practice, and unwavering commitment have resulted in this well-deserved triumph.

The road to success was challenging, as our team faced formidable opponents throughout the tournament. Nevertheless, they remained focused and determined, employing their strategic brilliance and demonstrating outstanding teamwork.

Congratulations to each member of the Redlands Junior School Representative Chess Team for their outstanding achievement.

Term 3 Staffing News

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Argiro Anagnostu to the role of Dean of Teaching and Learning (P-6) commencing Term 3, 2023. Argiro joined Redlands in 2019 and has been working as the eLearning Coordinator on the Junior Campus. Prior to joining Redlands, Argiro gained extensive experience teaching in international schools and led a teaching and learning department at her previous school overseas. Argiro has also excelled during her time at Redlands as the recipient of the 2021 Roseby Award for Outstanding Achievement and, more recently, the shared recipient of the Redlands Innovative Teaching Fellowship in 2023 which sees her presenting at an international conference in the upcoming break in Philadelphia.

At the end of this term, we say farewell to Mr Hugh Brakell who leaves Redlands after four and a half years and we extend our gratitude to him for his dedication and service to our School.

We also farewell our Gap Year Student, Ms Iris Buisman, who takes up an opportunity to study at university in her home country of The Netherlands, where her family are. We thank Iris for her work with us this year.

As already communicated to Class 5Y, we are delighted to welcome Ms Erin Higginson to our Year 5 team who joins us from West Moreton Anglican College in Queensland. Ms Higginson flew down from Brisbane yesterday for the day to meet the students and have time with Mr Brakell in the handover.

Connected to Mr Brakell’s departure, I am pleased to confirm the appointment of Ms Kate Osborn as the Year 5 Coordinator for the rest of the year, a role she held at her previous school and simultaneously, congratulate Ms Vanessa Jones who steps into the Year 5 Assistant Coordinator role.

Our Visual Arts teacher, Ms Paula Reinhold, will step into the Acting Coordinator of Visual Arts K-12 next term which will mean she will teach on the Senior Campus. For Term 3, we welcome Maddie Godsell to teach Visual Arts in the Junior School, a place she knows well as a Redlander.

Next term also sees Mrs Kate Hurley (Year 3) and Mrs Jasmine Lo (EALD) on deserved Long Service Leave after more than a decade of service to Redlands and welcome Ms Heidi Moore (Year 3) and Ms Amber Mun (EALD) respectively to take their roles.

Compost Tuesday

As mentioned last week, our environmental leaders launched Compost Tuesday and focused on putting their knowledge of what goes into compost into action by collecting compostable materials and putting them in the compost bins. It was great to see the Environment Representatives guiding and educating their respective year levels and the group are now planning to commit to doing this every lunchtime next term.

End of Term

It has been another term of highlights and achievements and I extend my gratitude and appreciation to students, staff and families for the various roles we play in our School community.

As we approach the midyear break, I hope that families are able to take time for rest, relaxation and renewal. As is also the case for our staff, these times away from Redlands are very important for all of us as they then allow us to be at our very best when we are here.

Rest, in whatever sense, is different for all of us which and I hope that the mid-year break allows you to relax and recharge. We also say goodbye to a few students and families and wish them all the very best and much happiness in the next chapter of their schooling.

To those of you travelling near or far, I wish you safe travels and we look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday 18 July. Please note that the Junior School Office will reopen on Monday 17 July and I will send a detailed Term 3 letter towards the end of the holiday break.

Secondary Sport

As we begin to prepare for the winter holiday season and mid-season sport break, I thought it timely to remind students (and parents) on what they should want from their school sport experience. Students should seek a holistic approach that extends beyond mere athletic achievement. First and foremost, they should value the opportunity for physical fitness and wellbeing. Engaging in school sports allows them to lead an active lifestyle, develop fundamental motor skills and promote overall health.  They should also prioritise skill development, aiming to improve their abilities and understanding of the sport. Learning proper techniques, tactics and strategies not only enhances their performance but also builds a strong foundation for future athletic endeavours.

Additionally, students should desire a positive and inclusive environment in their schools sports. They should seek a supportive and encouraging atmosphere where they feel valued and respected by their peers, coaches and teachers. Such an environment fosters self-confidence, promotes teamwork and cultivates a sense of belonging.

Participation in school sports should also teach important life skills. Students should strive to develop discipline, perseverance and time management skills as they balance their academic responsibilities with training and competitions. They should learn to handle success and failure gracefully, developing resilience and a growth mindset. It also provides an excellent platform for building leadership skills as they have the opportunity to take on captaincy roles and mentor younger teammates.

Ultimately, students should want their school sporting experience to be a avenue for personal growth, enjoyment and well-rounded development. It should instil a love for physical activity, promote sportsmanship and nurture lifelong healthy habits.

‘The most valuable of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it has to be done, whether you like it or not.’

Bus Transport

As a school we pride ourselves on the way in which our students participate and train in their chosen fields, providing opportunities for all students to participate in a range of activities is something that we will continue to do. Providing transport to those activities is something that we do as a school, this is a gentle reminder that when travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail the meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Hockey

Most students and parents know all about the away game early bus. Our hockey girls were on one on Saturday morning headed to the Central Coast. The Junior girls played first and in the crisp winter air they determinedly set about on their mission, scoring two goals in the first half. With some great passing and impressive dribbling skills they added two more goals to the score line before the final whistle blew. Another fantastic game for our undefeated junior girls! The Firsts took to the field soon after, ready to live up to the standard set by the junior girls. In training we have been speaking about and working on our structure, passing and transfers and it all started to come together this weekend. There was some beautiful passing in the mid field, particularly by Heidi and Ellie as well as some magical moves by Ava who helped set up a beautiful goal by Sahara (a big thank you to these two who played up into the firsts and did a wonderful job!!). We managed several transfers and many girls stepped up and played beautifully in defence. The whole team played beautifully together and maintained high energy and momentum right to the final whistle which is something else that we have been talking about. A second goal in the second half brought us up to a 2-1 win which was very well deserved.  We are looking forward to playing even better hockey after the holidays. The finals are in sight!

We will be holding some hockey sessions during Week 3 of the school holiday period, please see the details below:

Tuesday 11 July: 7:30am-9am @ Junior School Oval
Thursday 13 July: 7:30am-9am @ Junior School Oval

Please click here to register for these sessions.

Save the Date! The End of Season Hockey Presentation dinner will be held on Thursday 24 August at Balgowlah Bowling Club.

Hockey training will recommence in Term 3 on Tuesday 18 July, with Round 8 on Saturday 22 July.

Netball

Wishing you all a lovely mid-season break but do keep being active in the break. Winter sport is NOT FINISHED just yet! Any type of movement is great for the mind and the body, so get out for a walk or a run and keep moving.

For some of our Year 12 players, the last fixture for Term 2 was their final game at our home ground of NBISC on the weekend. I estimate if they have been at Redlands since Year 7 they have played over 60 games at the grounds over the last 6 years ! What a journey you have all had. I know you will miss those freezing cold mornings at the courts, I hope you have many happy memories with your coaches and team mates.

Congratulations to the following girls who made the ISA 15U team, Heidi Charles and Sienna Harriss. Amazing work girls and good luck in the upcoming tournament.

Also, Maddy d’Almeida, Charlotte Horton and Ava Mills were selected into the ISA Opens Squad with the final team will be announced next term. Play hard girls.

Here is a timely article published just last Friday on the status of Netball in Australia right now, Helen Housby of the Roses, one of my all time favourite goal shooters and knowing the worth of elite netballers in Australia specifically and why we seem to devalue our phenomenal sport. Lets make that change. Happy reading.

Junior Sport

Term 3 Netball and Hockey

Congratulations to our Junior school Netball and Hockey teams who wrapped up their final match on Saturday. Both sports have continued to grow this year and girls should be commended on their efforts as they faced schools with more teams and players each week. While there are no tables or finals in our IPSHA association, special mention to the 3A Netball team coaches by Ashley Ghattas who went undefeated all season. These girls will receive a special trophy at our sports prizegiving in Term 4. Notable mention to the Year 5/6 Hockey A team who only lost one match all season. Thank you to coaches and girls for a great season.

Term 4 Sport

Thank you to the large number of families who have completed their Term 4 Summer Sport preference this week. As a result of our association (IPSHA) moving forward their due date for Term 4 Sport nominations for schools, Redlands families are now required to complete their Term 4 Summer Sport preference for their child on or before this Friday 23 June.

Please note if your child played a REPRESENTATIVE SPORT in Term 1 (Basketball, Tennis or Touch Football) no action is required as your child will automatically be rolled to that same sport in Term 4 as they are continuing their season that paused in Round 6. Their competition will resume with rounds 7 through to 12 once we commence rep sport in Term 4. The girls who played Rep Girls Football will need to choose a new Term 4 Rep Sport or Non-Rep Sport, as your season was only 1 Term in duration.

For all other families who NOT intending to do a Representative Sport, you are required to complete a Term 4 sport preference from the choices available on the form. Please note some sports have a capped maximum participation rate and so please do not delay in selecting your first preference. Please discuss with your child what sport you will select for them for Term 4.

Music

SENIOR MUSIC FESTIVAL on Friday evening was a roaring success and we are grateful to all those in our community who joined us for the fun! The show was made possible by 200 beaming performers, our graduating class as hosts with the most, and 30 staff and Friends of Music who jumped on board the creative vision to make it the memorable night it was!

PLEASE CLICK THIS LINK TO ENJOY ALL THE PHOTOS!

On a personal note, I was beyond humbled by the return of former students to sing alongside current ones, and to learn that there had been secret rehearsals to surprise me with the most moving encore to close the Festival! Tears again today as 300 Junior Campus students sang me a heartfelt benediction! My heart. Undoubtedly some of the most moving experiences of my life, and I am so thankful for all the beautiful memories made with this community over the past 7 years!

The Redlands Music Department will continue from strength to strength, and it has been my profound joy to be woven into its fabric alongside you all.

Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hands.

Amy Richardson
Director of Music P-12

Junior Campus Choral Celebration

The Choral program at Redlands is thriving and we thank Mrs Roberts (Head of Choral P-12) for her leadership in this space. It was also a wonderful celebration through song to thank our Director of Music Mrs Richardson for her leadership and love of singing.
