Issue 19 2020 - 18 Jun 2020

From the Principal

In a recent Note Day article I spoke of the importance of education in addressing issues of racism in society and the hope that is evident in our youth, who are keen to engage with and reflect on the big issues facing our globe. I have been so proud of our student leaders in recent weeks as they have grappled with how they can make a positive contribution. In our Prefect-led assembly this week, Service Captain Maya Auld shared a most thoughtful, mature and inspiring address in which she encouraged our students to be educated on the issue of racism and its impact and to be an ally to people experiencing marginalisation. The Prefects also decided to provide all Secondary School students with the opportunity (if they felt inclined) to take a knee together following Tutor period on Tuesday, in a show of solidarity and support. A simple but strong gesture. You can read Maya’s address in the Head of Secondary School section of Note Day.

Following an early morning ride this week, as I was enjoying actually having a coffee inside the café, I was dismayed as I flicked through an old newspaper to see yet another article sensationally stating that our school system is failing.

It has become far too common a sport to denigrate our education system and in so doing devalue and demotivate teachers. There is talk of wanting to attract the best and brightest into such an important vocation, yet those commentators do not stop to realise the negative impact that media representations have on the profession.

Similarly, I am often exasperated at the polarisation that occurs when educationalists debate the merits of an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning versus more direct instruction. It is as if the two approaches are binaries and that teachers must make a definitive choice as to which end of the seesaw they want to occupy.

In my experience, outstanding teachers make use of a broad range of approaches and totally understand that for students to utilise higher level skills of critical and creative thinking, when problem solving in complex learning tasks, they require a solid foundation of literacy and numeracy skills, which are developed over time through specific instruction. Throughout a task that requires deeper and visible thinking, students will be utilising a broad range of skills and be guided and supported by their teachers.

Our new Head of Teaching and Learning, Matthew Bentley, distributed a discussion paper to the Academic Committee to reflect on and discuss this week. It was an excerpt from the book ‘In Search of Deeper Learning: The Quest to Remake the American High School’ by J Mehta and S Fine (2019). I have included a key paragraph below that highlights the importance of a balanced approach and the key role experienced teachers play in providing rich, meaningful and engaging learning to flourish. Our Redlands Learning Platform, with its focus on the work of the Harvard Project Zero program, has at its core the goal of providing students with deeper learning opportunities.

In other words, the most powerful learning experiences we observed were neither at the progressive pole of self-guided learning nor at the conservative extreme of direct instruction. Rather, they assumed the model of apprenticeship or induction, in which students became motivated by a domain and worked to develop or make something within that domain, but did so under the watchful eye of expert mentors. Our findings are consistent with two recent syntheses of decades of work on project-based learning and problem-based or inquiry-oriented learning, both of which find that such modes can have strongly positive results if (and only if) they are organized with appropriate scaffolding and necessary direction from more knowledgeable others.  John Hattie’s meta-analysis of practices aligned with effective teaching similarly emphasizes a number of the elements that we identify here, including the importance of feedback, deliberate practice, and scaffolding.

New Learning Hub – Visited by Prep School Students

There was a lot of excitement from our Prep School students who came to visit the Senior Campus. They toured and learnt about the construction work, and how the learning spaces were built. Students visited several floors of this wonderful new development and also visited the John Roberts Centre [Music Centre] which is now connected to the New Learning Hub.

Assembly Message

Over the past few weeks a number of students have approached other staff and me wanting to say or do something in response to the concerns that have been raised in the Black Lives Matter protests in the United States, Australia and around the world. In Tuesday’s remote assembly, one of our Service Captains, Maya Auld, spoke to staff and students about how we can make a difference by listening to, learning from and showing support for people who are experiencing injustice. The Yr 12 leaders then invited students and staff to volunteer to take a knee for a minute after the assembly in a moment of reflection and support. I joined many Yr 12 students and staff in taking a knee in the top garden and appreciated their solemn and thoughtful act of solidarity. Our students’ continued passion to make a difference in the world, to stand against injustice and to show support for others continues to inspire me.

I have included Maya’s speech below.

You’ve no doubt seen the harrowing footage and photos from the police brutality protests that have been taking place across America and here in Australia, and probably felt somewhat helpless in the face of it all. In light of these recent events, and in recognition of the countless we don’t and will likely never know about – we are reminded that when we see injustice, it is up to us to step in and make a difference.

Questions about systemic racism are not bad or forbidden, and honest, open-minded dialogues about the resulting movements are encouraged and really normal. HOWEVER it is our responsibility as allies to be as informed and educated as we can. Before we act or speak, we must first investigate.

What does it mean to be an ally?

Being an ally means continually learning and educating yourself and those around you on the ways we can help and support marginalised communities.

Ally-ship cannot be defined merely on the basis of binaries such as Black and White, oppressed and oppressor, less and more privileged. For, privilege itself cannot be determined only through the variables of race and class. Rather, it is multi-dimensional and shaped by each individual’s lived experiences. Thus, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic class, education, and many other factors can make a person privileged among a group of people and less privileged among another.

Consequently, it is an individual’s willingness to contribute to and actively participate in a community’s struggle for justice and equality that renders them allies and partners of this community, despite the fact that this person is not originally a part of it.

It is no longer enough to be ‘non-racist’, it is vital to be actively anti-racist. As Redlands students, we are committed to fight racism wherever we find it, including in ourselves. This is the only way forward. True ally-ship is not just talk. It is about the work. It is an active process. And that process belongs to everyone.

It is our responsibility to listen, learn, take action, and repeat. If you’d like to be supportive and don’t know how, we’ve compiled a list of  resources, including books, podcasts, movies, documentaries and articles on the Redlands Service Learning iLearn page.

Parent Student Teacher Nights

Yesterday evening we held our Yr 12 Parent Student Teacher Night remotely via Zoom and will be holding all other upcoming Parent Student Teacher Nights online via Zoom for the remainder of this term (Yr 9) and early next term (Yrs 7 and 8). Information will be sent home to these families about how they can schedule their meetings with teachers and access the meetings via Zoom. We would ask parents to please read these directions carefully as we are continuing to try to improve and update our procedures for these meetings. If you have any general questions about these nights, please send enquiries to Susan Jones. If you need ICT support for any of these evenings, please contact our ICT Support team. While different than in person meetings, we still hope these meetings will provide valuable academic feedback for students and families.

We are also asking parents to take a few minutes to give feedback on the remote Parent Student Teacher meetings after their scheduled evening to help us with our planning moving forward. Parents will receive a separate email with the link to the feedback survey or they can access it here.

Holiday Activities

There are a number of school related activities for students taking place in the upcoming holidays. Specifically, there will be a number of academic workshops for Yr 12 students and there will be Sports training for representative teams as they prepare for the commencement of interschool fixtures next term. We know many students are looking forward to the opportunity to participate in these sessions during the holidays. Please note that while we encourage students to join in these holiday activities where possible, they are still optional. If students have any concerns around their participation, they should speak to the relevant activity coordinator or Dean.

Secondary School Prize Vouchers

A number of students still have unclaimed book prize vouchers from 2019. Because of the challenging circumstances over the past few months, we have asked the book sellers for an extension for the redemption of these prize vouchers until the start of Term 3. Accordingly, if you have not yet claimed your prize voucher from Speech Night last year, you will be able to redeem the voucher until 21 July. Please contact the Secondary School Library with any further questions.

Term 3/4 Departure Notice

As we are approaching the mid-point of the year, this is a reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School at the end of Terms 3 or 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by the following dates:

End Term 3 Departure:  Friday 26 June 2020
End Term 4 Departure:  Sunday 26 July 2020

As per our Conditions of Enrolment emailed to all families in December last year with the 2020 Schedule of Fees, there will be fees in lieu payable for any notices of departure received after this date.

If your family is experiencing current financial difficulties as a result of COVID-19, please contact our Chief Financial Officer at bweatherstone@redlands.nsw.edu.au to see how the School may support your child’s continued enrolment at Redlands.

Our Yr 9 students engaged in an incursion from the Sydney Jewish Museum on Tuesday which gave them a rich learning opportunity. The day helped students to understand the practice of Jewish faith which consolidated their learning in Christian Studies. It also provided a good basis to begin to explore the causes and impact of the Holocaust.

The presenter of the second webinar enabled students to have a deeper understanding that the genocide was not a single man’s responsibility but was enabled by many of the general population. The exploration into the use of language and imagery to marginalise, blame, dehumanise and eventually kill a minority group rang caution bells for life today.

The final webinar provided insight as a number of survivors shared their stories.

The webinars were interspersed with workshops where students worked collaboratively to process and reflect on the images, concepts and stories. Parents and carers are encouraged to ask their students about this day. Encourage them to share what they discovered and what surprised them or even what issues they are thinking about.

I had a remarkable discussion with one group of students who were reflecting on the horror of genocide which they sincerely hoped would never be repeated and yet across our world it continues to happen. They reflected on the way that societies are manipulated. They considered the nature of humanity, that hate and violence can become acceptable. They wondered about the tumult of the riots and violence at present around the world and what lessons the past have for that situation.

Some of the students connected the issues they were discussing to their current learning about Aboriginal Spirituality in Christian Studies. They were considering the genocide of the Aboriginal people and how that has an ongoing effect. They were wanting to consider what might be a constructive way forward for our nation.

This day is not an easy day for the students but it does provide them with information and a supported environment to explore these crucial issues in our world. As leaders in their generation it is important that they have an appreciation of the lessons of the past and the ongoing impact of our past on life today.

May the Lord Bless you.

Yr 9 Parent Student Teacher Night Wednesday 24 June
Yr 9 into Yr 10 Information Night Wednesday 22 July

Parent Student Teacher Interviews

Parent Student Teacher Interviews will be held next Wednesday 24 June. Booking information will be emailed to you via the Secondary School Office. Interviews will occur via Zoom and are a fantastic opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers. To make the most of this experience, we encourage students to attend prepared with specific questions about their progress and the course.

Communication with Teachers

As students move into their final stages of school, your child will start developing more independence. These changes will start affecting the way parents communicate and connect with the school. Students should be taking more responsibility for communicating with their teachers (eg. when away from lessons, have questions about subject content etc.)

Parents can still have a relationship with the school that fits around their child’s changing social needs. One of the best ways to continue helping your child is to create a supportive environment for education at home – an environment that values education. This might involve simply talking about schoolwork together, discussing your child’s career plans and ambitions, or talking through the links between your child’s schoolwork and their future goals.

Permission Needed – Let’s Mark This Moment in History

Yr 9 participated in Australia Post’s Dear Australia initiative. For letters to be posted, parent permission needs to be granted via Engage, by the end of term. We thank you for your support of this activity.

School Photos

Yr 9 school photos have now been distributed. You are still able to order photos should you wish. Please have your child pop into the Yr 9 Year Advisor Office to collect their personal order form.

Secondary School Photography Day – Wednesday 24 June

Yr 9 Incursion

Though the Sydney Jewish Museum is not currently able to welcome students to the Museum, on Tuesday students were able to engage with them virtually via webinar. The experience was engaging and thought-provoking. Thank you to the History and Christian Studies Departments for arranging this event. For a thorough report, please see the Christian Studies section of Note Day.

Redlands Gives Thanks

In Week 6, Yr 9 spent time writing letters of thanks to our local food services. These letters have now been posted. Thank you Yr 9 for your caring and sincere words of support to a key section of our essential services.

Social Emotional Learning

Last week in Pastoral Care, students explored self-awareness and self-management when faced with situations that crop up that are out of our control. More information can be found in last week’s Note Day entry. Included are images of Ms Martin’s Tutor Group, McDouall Green, who are considering how one can change their behaviour to influence situations positively.

This Week

  • The Sport teams are back in action and preparing for a strong start to competition in Term 3. It was a pleasure being able to join the Boys Rugby team and the Girls Netball team practices these last two weeks. While we discuss character strengths in Pastoral Care, what is seen in these practices is a fantastic demonstration of many of these strengths: determination, persistence, kindness, zest, teamwork, encouragement, leadership, accountability and bravery. We will continue to celebrate these strengths in students on the fields and courts while challenging and encouraging them to see these strengths transfer to the playground and the classroom.
  • A special congratulations to Jessica Van Extel for being awarded the Representative Player in Field Hockey from the Independent Sporting Association. Well done, Jessica!

Reminders

  • It is a health hazard for additional visitors to visit campus during the day.  In an effort to limit the amount of people coming onto the school campus during the day, we are asking parents to not drop items off in the Secondary School Office or any office on school grounds. Yr 8 students should be responsible for their own items and we can usually assist with any daily issues if students communicate with their Tutor or Year Advisors.
  • Wednesday 5 August for Yr 8 Parent Student Teacher Evening. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet all of your child’s teachers and to hear how your child is going in each subject.

Blazer Pick-Up

Students and parents will receive communication via email about arrangements for those students who would like to have their blazers embroidered at the end of Term 2. This will include any Summer Sport awards that were given out at the end of Term 1 but were unable to be embroidered at that time due to restrictions.

Yr 8 students will be able to drop off their blazers at the following times on Friday 26 June:

Tutor – from 10.10-10.35am
Recess – from 10.35-11.05am
Lunch – from 12.50-1.35pm

Special Report: Social Media and Digital Reputation

Overview of this edition – Social media has become such an integral part of a teenager’s life that it can cause anxiety and lower their self-esteem. Modern teens are learning to do most of their communication whilst looking at a screen instead of another person. They are missing out on very critical social skills.

Dependant on what they are communicating online, it can affect their digital reputation. Friendships, relationships and even future job prospects are all at risk. As a parent, it is very important that you are aware of what picture they are painting of themselves online.

Once information makes its way online it can be difficult to remove. Images and words can be misinterpreted and altered as they are easily and quickly shared around. Privacy settings on social media sites need to be managed in order to protect your child’s digital reputation. View report here.

Pastoral Program – Character Strengths

This week, the Pastoral Program focused on students learning about 24 character strengths that research indicates contributes to a person’s wellbeing including being a positive contributor to their school, home and community. The meaning of each of the 24 character strengths led to helping students to become self-aware of their top character strengths, the importance of using their character strengths on a regular basis and ways to strengthen a character strength.

Semester 1 Reports

Student reports for Semester 1 are currently being finalised by teachers and I look forward to reviewing them in due course too. For new families, in particular, these reports will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse for your private access during the holiday break and information on how to access and download these reports will be sent to you, along with notification on when they have been uploaded.

Community Health Matters

As has been the case this term, our position since bringing all students back to school earlier in May has been that we require students and staff who are symptomatic or who have been tested to stay away from school until they have received a negative test result. As we have taken a cautious approach overall, we have also asked siblings of any child being tested to also remain at home until that test result has been received. Over the holiday break, the School will review aspects of our processes ahead of Term 3 and communicate this with families before Term 3 starts.

Junior School Assembly

Whilst the advice for schools has been that assemblies can resume for a maximum of 15 minutes this week, we continued with our Junior School assembly on Zoom this week. Gathering together as a Junior School has been an important part of this period of time; initially with 450 students meeting remotely and online from home to our current position of connecting in their respective classrooms and being part of three live gatherings via their class SMART board screen. All things being well, I hope that we will be in a position to all gather in Dunnet Hall from Term 3, something that I have really missed during this time.

Class Parent Rep Meeting

It was great to attend last Thursday evening’s online Class Parent Rep Meeting and see this important meeting still take place. I was able to acknowledge the community support of our parents during the period of isolation, particularly for Redlands families who were new to Sydney or Australia at the start of the year and have family overseas. It was also good to get some feedback on aspects of the Junior School return to On-Campus Learning and answer questions about aspects of next term. I hope that this group’s termly meeting can return in person next term and thank Jay Cunningham and Rebecca James for facilitating this session for our Class Parents to remain connected.

Sport Uniform on PE Days

In this current climate, we have allowed our students to wear their PE uniform on days that their class have PE, as well as Wednesday when the whole Junior School have sport. As we have seen the benefits of this in terms of reducing time for students to need to change before and after class and avoid them having to carry an extra bag to school on these days, sometimes on days when they are also carrying musical instruments, we will continue this practice now moving forward. I have appreciated parent, staff and student feedback on this and all are aligned in seeing this as a positive change.

Staffing News

At the end of this term, we say farewell to two long-serving staff members who have contributed enormously to the life of Redlands during their time with us.

Currently on Long Service Leave, Mr Nigel Coutts, the previous Dean of Teaching and Learning, is moving to Melbourne to take up the Primary Head of Teaching and Learning position at Mentone Grammar School. Mr Coutts’ significant contributions to teaching and learning over his 18 year tenure as a class teacher, Year Coordinator and Dean are noteworthy, in particular his role in the update of our Redlands Learning Platform, including embedding a culture of thinking and learning. In his time with us, Mr Coutts led many engaging parent seminars on aspects of our teaching practice and provided great support and counsel to colleagues from all sections of the School. In more recent years, he has also been employed by the Harvard Graduate School of Education as a coach in their global Cultures of Thinking program. We wish Mr Coutts all the very best in this exciting new challenge for him where he will continue to influence learning on a wider scale.

At the end of the term, we also say goodbye to Yr 6 teacher, Mrs Trish Morgan who is returing to New Zealand at the end of term. Since her appointment to the Junior School teaching staff in 2011, Mrs Morgan’s dedication to her students, strong sense of collegiality and warmth have been outstanding attributes and she will be sorely missed.

Simultaneously, I am delighted to confirm that we have appointed Mr David O’Farrell to take over from Mrs Morgan from the start of Term 3. Mr O’Farrell was an integral part of our Junior School teaching team from 2012-2015 so is very familiar with the School. For the last 4½ years, Mr O’Farrell has been teaching at Garden International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and is returning to Sydney in July with his family.

Junior School Red Factor

Our Arts Captains, Kira Delaney and Dante Minassian, have guided a creative way in which our cancelled Red Factor talent show is still able to take place, albeit in a different format. This event will take place on the last afternoon of the term in classrooms. Students can choose between dance, music, singing, instruments, drama, comedy or other special talents and either make a two minute video at home to share with their class via the Red Factor Flipgrid. Videos can be uploaded here and whilst some students might perform in class, students can watch all of the performances that have been uploaded to the Flipgrid during the school holidays.

Road Safety

Continuing with our focus on road safety, we will be providing every Junior School family with a Transport NSW ‘Safety Door’ sticker. The sticker is designed to be attached to the window of the rear passenger door closest to the kerb, to remind children that this is the safest door to use to get in and out of the car. Our teachers will be looking for the stickers during our car line pick-up and drop-off with lots of positive reinforcement!

Further information about road safety can be found on the Safety Town website as well as tips, games, quizzes and videos you can do together with your children to support their understandings and awareness. Thank you for your continued support of student safety.

An Update

I have been so proud of our students this week as they walk in every day understanding and demonstrating the protocols for in-school hygienic practices. Our little ones hop out of their cars (in most cases unassisted), pop their blazers on, bag on their backs and say goodbye to mum or dad with a smile and walk in to school. All students are still using the provided hand sanitisers at entrances to the building as well as getting their temperatures checked as they start their day. Throughout the day our students are reminded and encouraged to wash their hands often and to be mindful of social distancing when they can. I am super impressed at how clear they are at articulating what and why they have to follow these protocols. Their resilience is growing as they come to terms with their normal routines and activities being slightly changed for the time being.

At Redlands we are continuing to follow advice and guidance from governing bodies as well as maintaining our own level of vigilance for our staff and students to keep all safe and healthy. Please be aware of the following guidelines if your child is demonstrating symptoms and also what to do if siblings are at the school.

  • A student who presents at school with temperature or symptoms is to be checked by the School Nurse then sent home immediately (if parent present) or isolated until parent/carer can collect.
  • Parent/carers to seek medical advice (encourage COVID testing).
  • Parents/carers asked to advise the School if a student is being tested and as results are received.
  • The student is not to attend school while awaiting test results – siblings are asked not to attend school until a clear test has been received.
  • The student will be required to give evidence of medical clearance prior to returning to school.

These guidelines will remain in place until the end of the term. The School Executive will meet and review procedures as we move into Term 3 and any changes to Redlands procedures will be addressed by a communication from the Principal, Mr Stephen Webber at the commencement of the term.

Car Safety

I encourage all families to read the information sent out today from Sam Kourakis, Dean of Students regarding car safety and the information around the displaying of the car safety sticker. You never know, a few House points might be given to those cars who use the sticker!

You may have seen a Traffic Controller at car line this past week. We have been very appreciative of their presence as they watch and observe the traffic flow and provide the school with some suggestions in moving forward. They are also observing and enforcing the left hand turn only on exiting the car park. Turning right is an illegal turn as is performing a U-turn over double lines to park on the other side of the street. Please adhere to these rules as our children’s safety is more important than convenience.

Staff Information

It is with sadness we will say goodbye to our beloved Miss Sim in Term 3, Week 2. Stellina has accepted a role as Head of Teaching and Learning at Waverley College, Melbourne. We will miss her terribly but all staff and students are very excited for her. Luckily we will have some time next term to celebrate her time at Redlands and farewell her.

Curriculum Matters

This week I have asked Two Blue to write a focus piece on their learning this week. Each time I have walked into their room they have been investigating, exploring and demonstrating some challenging thinking. Here is what they wanted to say:

‘As part of their Unit of Inquiry, Year Two are developing their abilities to think like scientists. Currently, learners are investigating patterns in the position of the sun across the day, changes in the shape of the moon and seasonal patterns. Learners are observing, posing questions, collecting data and describing their findings. With a partner, Two Blue are using an app called Explain Everything to document learning processes and outcomes. This app enables learners to access a variety of tools for annotation, animation, narration and sharing purposes. As a collaborative tool, Explain Everything is also used in other key learning areas such as Mathematics. Learners in Two Blue enjoy instructing and modelling their calculation strategies using the app’s recording tool, text, arrow and pen features. As mathematicians, Yr 2 students are provided with opportunities to represent their thinking in multiple ways showing conceptual understanding and visible thinking. Providing opportunities for students to document, revise, communicate and reflect on learning processes deepens their understanding, promotes risk-taking and enriches their capacities as life-long learners.’

Term 3/4 Departure Notice

New Interactive Whiteboard

We are very excited to have new interactive whiteboards in each of the classrooms at Redlands House. These new devices will allow us to provide the children with a variety of interactive experiences. They replace conventional boards and allow people to write on them with special pens but also have an array of other features because of their connection to a computer and the internet.

Miss Pyky Last Days

Although it is very exciting, we are also very sad that next week will be Miss Pyky’s last week at Redlands. Miss Pyky will commence her maternity leave at the beginning of Term 3. We wish her all the best for the safe arrival of the baby, we know she will be a wonderful mother. Stay tuned, we will advise when the baby has been born.

Mouthguards

There will be a representative from ProFit mouthguards at the school next week, Monday 22 June. ProFit mouthguards are professionally fitted onsite using dental moulds and offer protection for teeth and gums whilst also reducing the severity of concussions caused by contact sports.

For any student wishing to be fitted please contact Mr Jack Gooding and please complete the registration form on Redlands Pulse. These mouthguards are recommended for all Winter Representative Sports in Redlands including Hockey, Football and Rugby.

All players are asked to look at Redlands Pulse, Note Day or email communication from Ms Howard for the most up to date information regarding the current training schedule.

Due to the continued closure of our non-rep providers, there will be no non-rep sport until further notice. Non-rep sports students will be dismissed from school at 2.25pm on Thursday afternoons. Upon the opening of our external providers we will resume non-rep sport where possible.

Rugby

There will be an additional training session this week with the Under 15s, Under 16s and Opens all training at Primrose Field this Friday. Session will run from 3.30-5.00pm. Students are reminded to bring their own water bottles to each session along with boots, jersey and Rugby shorts.

Tennis

It was great to see all Tennis students out on court during the week and it was fantastic to hear the coaches comment on how impressed they are with all students’ attitude and effort at all training sessions. The Tennis training schedule will remain the same for the last two weeks of term with all groups training on either Tuesday and Saturday or Thursday and Saturday. The schedule is available on Redlands Pulse. During the final week of the school holidays we will be running two Tennis camps. All students are encouraged to attend. Group 3 and 4 should enrol in the Development Camp and Group 1 and 2 should enrol in the High Performance Camp here. Both camps area a great opportunity to improve individual Tennis skills through challenging drills and match/point play.

Junior Sport

We were very fortunate on Wednesday to get through all of our final gradings for our Yrs 5 and 6 representative sports despite early showers threatening these. Special mention to those students across both Year Groups who, even though are not playing a representative sport in Term 3, involved themselves in the skills, drills and fitness sessions on offer. I was very proud of the 20 Yr 6 students made up of dancers, golfers, tennis players and swimmers who enthusiastically participated in my 70min boxing session. Some tired hands at the end of it but most of them seemed to enjoy the session and have a new appreciation for how fit boxers have to be.

Yrs 3 and 4 will have their opportunity to have their final grading for rep teams next Wednesday in school time and all sports remaining on site. Similar to Yrs 5 and 6, those students not involved in rep sport may elect to do an activity on the day. This is due to the fact that some external companies who cater for our non-rep sports program will not reopen until next term.

A reminder that this Saturday is the final optional winter skills session for any interested family. Only those students who have registered will be permitted to enter the grounds on Saturday and take part. Information was emailed to parents last Saturday on how to register and also who has registered for this week. More information can be found here.

While there is no Junior School Sport offerings these coming school holidays, please encourage your child to participate in as much physical activity as they can, try some new things, go for a run, get out and enjoy what the easing of COVID-19 restrictions has allowed.

Term 3 Sport Information Zoom Session

In preparation for the return to sport next term, but also for a refresh from where we left off in Term 1, there is an opportunity for parents to join a Zoom Sport Information session next Tuesday evening at the times below. Please access the conversation via the Zoom links below which were also sent on Monday 15 June.

Tuesday 23 June

6.30pm: Yrs 3 and 4 Sport – Zoom link
7.15pm: Yrs 5 and 6 Sport – Zoom link

While I will cover information relating to the restart of Representative Sport in Term 3, the session will cover all sport, whether you are involved in Representative Sport or not. It is more of an opportunity to realign, see what is new, where we are going and what is coming up. I have included an agenda below to see if there is an area that interests you.

Agenda

  • Welcome
  • Communication
  • Redlands Pulse-Junior School Sport Refresh
  • Term 3 Sport update
  • Uniforms
  • Sport Training
  • Athletics Carnival
  • Cross Country Carnival
  • AOB

Athletics Carnival Term 3

In preparation for our Athletics Carnival scheduled to take place Term 3, Week 3 students have been provided with their entrant number (different from Swimming) which they will use to enter track (running) events. This link contains all these Entrant Numbers.

I am asking students to learn these like they did for Swimming in Term 1. This will allow for their names, race times and House to appear on the large digital screen at Homebush as soon as they finish their race and will aid in the overall running of the Carnival.

A reminder that registration to nominate to trial for field events (Long Jump, High Jump, Discus, and Shot Put) closes Friday 26 June. More details about this process and our upcoming Athletics Carnival can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Term 3 Sport

For Redlands Junior School Sport, the sporting calendar has been updated over the weekend to reflect the possible recommencement of before and after school training, the extra subject program and Saturday matches.

Term 3 Sport Calendar

Term 3 will hopefully also see the return to our normal Wednesday afternoon Sports program where students engage in various sports which they registered for last term. Given that it has been some time can I suggest you visit the following link to see your child’s nominated sport for Term 3.

It may be worth visiting this page to view your child’s Winter Sport Choice for Term 3.

To assist you in the planning and preparation for a return to sport in Term 3, please view this link. There are a few new initiatives and extra session on offer across the program.

Of course, as things are confirmed, we will notify all parents.

  • Perisher will host events between Sunday 6-Friday 11 September and will incorporate the Amelia McGuiness event on 9 September.

For Moguls and Slopestyle Events (if held), the event qualification invites will include athletes who achieved a minimum score of 24 (out of 60) in Moguls (from 2019 Regional Championships results) and 55 (out of 100) in Slopestyle (from the 2019 NSW Championships results).

Secondary School Music Ensemble Auditions

Over the course of this week, students have presented auditions to MICs of Music Ensembles, for possible selection into various Advanced Music Ensembles. Commendations to all students who prepared for these auditions, in playing solo repertoire, presenting technical skills and working through sight reading exercises. These results of these auditions will be published in Note Day in Week 9.

Auditions for other Small Ensembles, inclusive of Chamber Music, Jazz Vocals and Advanced Guitar Ensemble, will be held throughout Term 3.

Redlands Composition Competition

The Music Department is pleased to announce the 2020 Music Composition Competition. This creative opportunity is designed for any aspiring young composer in Yrs 7-12 who is currently enrolled in the either the Academic Music program, Cocurricular Music Ensembles program or Extra Subjects program. On-Campus Learning Weeks 8 and 9

Private Music Tuition and Music Ensembles Program

For the remainder of this term, students will continue with the current arrangements for Private Music tuition classes (P-12). Instrumental Music Ensembles will similarly continue in the Secondary School, facilitated through a range of smaller group settings and sectional rehearsals for Guitar Ensembles, Strings Ensembles, Concert Bands and Jazz Bands. It is important to note, that all Choral and Group singing experiences are currently under review and these sessions will continue to be delivered and resourced through our online platforms, where students will engage independently with provided resources and instruction materials. The Piano Ensemble and Chamber Music program will also continue to be delivered through online platforms.

Hygiene in the Music Setting

As part of our return to group settings, this has been a well-considered aspect of our planning and students involved in group instruction will follow the guidelines through the spreading out of rehearsals, utilising larger areas and outdoor learning spaces to promote distancing, where possible. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of musical equipment and resources will be undertaken daily.

Extra-Subjects Music (Individual Tuition and Groups)

For the delivery of Private Music instruction, individual lessons will continue with the original 4 week Rotational Schedules issued in Term 1.
